WHY FACULTY PROFESSIONAL GROWTH MATTERS: INSPIRATION AND NEW IDEAS “I found the Institute to be refreshing, inspiring and provocative. I came away with useful tools and the sixth-grade team has incorporated several activities into the work we do within our classes and in the co-curricular advisory program. The more I use the techniques I learned, the more convinced I am that these techniques help in profound and concrete ways.” — CATHERINE MICHAUD, ENGLISH TEACHER Attended the Institute for Social and Emotional Learning

THE IMPACT OF FINANCIAL AID: ACCESS TO A BISHOP'S EDUCATION “Never before had school offered such a wide range of possibilities to me: I could learn French, I could take part in performances in a real theater and I could (try to) play water polo. I felt thrilled and grateful that I had been afforded all these opportunities.” BEN COOPER '07, UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO SCHOOL OF LAW '17 Guest Speaker at the 2018 Bishop's Auction 8

A MESSAGE FROM THE PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT WE ARE BISHOP'S: One of my favorite things about The Bishop’s School is its strong sense of community, made up of all of us: students, faculty, staff and administration, as well as parents and grandparents. The PA theme for the year, We Are Bishop’s allows us to highlight the diverse and talented people who make Bishop’s the dynamic and joyful place that it is. Chances are you’ve seen us proudly using this slogan at PA events this fall; you’ll see us continue this in 2019. FALL RECAP: PA volunteers were incredibly busy this fall organizing and staffing numerous events. In October, volunteers, faculty, staff and the ASBC organized a terrific Bish Bowl extravaganza – complete with a student-designed We Are Bishop’s T-shirt to mark the occasion. Festivities included afternoon games on the Quad, Jazz Band on the terrace and a barbecue; before parents, faculty and students cheered on our studentathletes. In November, a spectacular Admissions Open House and a memorable 32nd annual Grandparents’ Day drew record numbers. In December, the PA kicked off the holiday season with a spectacular evening of carols, hot cocoa and cookies on the Quad at the annual Christmas Tree Lighting, a festive event that also saw record attendance. December came to a close with the annual faculty and staff appreciation cookie soiree where parents baked thousands of cookies for faculty and staff. FULL STEAM AHEAD: The PA is looking forward to a full spring semester. PA volunteers are busily planning the Auction Kickoff Wine Reception on Feb. 9 as well as “Rock the Knight,” this year’s auction and “party with a purpose” on April 27. Auction proceeds support student tuition assistance and faculty professional growth. Please show your We Are Bishop’s spirit by supporting these worthy causes! THANK YOU: I am incredibly appreciative of the volunteers who have spent countless hours this year to support this wonderful community. This generosity of time and spirit is what makes Bishop’s such a special place and exemplifies the phrase We Are Bishop’s! I wish you and your family a happy and healthy new year! With much gratitude,

I provide support for students in their mental and emotional well-being. I bring in speakers and programs to educate students, faculty and parents on various mental health topics and serve as facilitator of Bishop’s Peer Support Program.

“Bishop’s is special because of the care given to each member of the community. Students, faculty, parents, staff, administration, coaches...we all care for each other, and we really do function as a family. I recently had my 20-year reunion and being with my classmates was like being with family. The connections we create here as students, but also as members of the community, are stronger than I think we even realize. And THAT is special.” ELIZABETH WEPSIC V I S U A L A RTS D EPA RTM EN T C H A I R

“What makes Bishop’s special is our freedom to change and grow in order to strive for what is best for everyone. Bishop's is also a place that molds itself to the people in the community. As the classes bring forth different interests and personalities, so do the course offerings and social aspects of the School. Our mission has an overarching goal to do good and be good. I love that.”

I oversee the visual arts program and teach studio art in middle and upper school. I have been an advisor for all grade levels and run student art exhibitions.

“I have been an educator for a long time but have never worked at a place that feels so much like a supportive family with the shared goal of providing the best possible educational experience for our students. Every day I’m grateful that across this campus people are kind and care about each other.” MICHELLE SHE A

I am a science educator, teaching primarily AP Biology, and I’m also spearheading the development and growth of the Center for Creative Sciences, which aims to serve as a think tank for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and interdisciplinary education.

“I attended neighborhood schools because of the proximity of my home to those schools. No other prerequisites were required. In contrast, Bishop’s students, parents and alumni have earned their “Knight” status. Knights are focused on the greater good, not themselves. When I look into the eyes of a Knight I see unlimited promise; they are being built for a greater purpose. The staff is as unique and qualified as the students. When you work at Bishop’s, you are directly impacting lives.”

I provide and manage a safe and secure environment through "community policing" which includes dedicated officers, observant faculty and staff, concerned and loving parents, welcoming neighbors, thoughtful alumni and sound leadership.

“What makes Bishop’s special is the community of students and teachers I work with every day. I feel privileged to work in an environment of intelligent, passionate, and talented students and teachers, who have diverse experiences and interests. From the lunch table to the classroom, to the stages on which we perform, I have interesting conversations every day about everything from science, politics, the arts, economics, psychology...and the list goes on.” ESTHER HSIAO WO R L D L A N G U AG ES D EPA RTM EN T, C H I N ES E FAC U LTY

“What makes Bishop’s special is working with students who are not afraid to take risks and who are willing to work hard to learn a difficult language like Chinese. On a personal level, what makes Bishop’s special is the lunchtime. I get to have enriching and interesting conversations with awesome colleagues – and the best meal of the day from Sara Sweet’s team sweetens the deal.”

I teach middle school and upper school Chinese. I am also a sophomore advisor.

DAVE JOHNSTON M AT H E MAT ICS DE PA RT M E N T FAC U LTY

I teach middle school math, and I’m currently the math department co-chair. I also serve as an assistant coach for both girls’ volleyball and girls’ soccer.

“What makes Bishop’s special is that as a result of our School’s size, it feels like everyone knows (or wants to know!) everyone. In a world that often seems so devoid of meaningful connection, to be lucky enough to get to work in a place that both enjoys and strives to maintain such a genuine sense of community makes us all pretty darn lucky.”
