Senior Kate Lennon reluctantly displays one of the few remaining hall passes in the “Most people take them to the bathroom library. with them and you really don’t know who
The Cringe-Worthy Orange Hall Passes An 18 year-old student is sitting in class, unable to focus on her teacher’s lecture. Her concentration is centered on the fact that she desperately needs to leave class to use the bathroom, but she does not ask out of disgust of having to take the dreaded, germ-infested lanyard with her. Just the thought of having to handle the lanyard and have the bacteria creep its way onto her hands stops her from asking to leave, hindering her ability to focus on class. All because of a small, orange, nasty, lanyard. One of the many changes that occurred this year was the switch from the use of assignment notebooks as hallpasses to lanyards. This transition to lanyards used as hallpasses was met with little enthusiasm throughout the school. When asked about the intention of these lanyards, Mr. Aaron Hilts says that a main goal is to help limit the amount of traffic in the hallways by allowing only two students out of class at a time per room. In doing so, Hilts hopes to quiet the halls of GHS. While this may be a simple goal, it has brought unintended distaste from around the school. In the past, a teacher simply filled out the back of an assignment notebook or wrote an orange pass allowing a student to travel in the halls. Many just required a student to ask permission before leaving the classroom. Now, thinking about having to grab a communal lanyard to take with to the bathroom makes the stomachs of many churn. Having to carry the pass with you into the bathroom and then back to class after washing your hands is a horrific concept.
Mr. Maney reaches for the “clean” pass he keeps tucked away in his desk.
washes their hands and who doesn’t. It’s very unsanitary,” said senior Kate Lennon. Lennon also admits that she thinks the lanyards are “very childish, because no matter what, people ask their teachers for permission to leave the classroom. Having to carry the lanyard with is just unnecessary.” Mr. Maney understands how unpleasant this concept is and has set up a system to accommodate students. He has one pass designated as the “dirty pass.” This lanyard hangs by his door and is reserved for those students wishing to use the bathroom. Meanwhile, the “clean pass” is kept in his desk and students traveling to the office or library get to use this pass. Apart from being vile, these hallpasses have caused more problems than ever anticipated as many have been stolen and “misplaced” in classrooms around the school. While these passes have sinced been replaced, they continue to disappear from various classrooms. Senior Zack Welter admits that “I don’t ever use them, I just ask the teacher to leave because most teachers don’t actually have them anymore.” Like Welter, many other students prefer a teacher’s permission over having to carry a lanyard in the halls. Because the hallpasses are stolen so often, are unsanitary, and detested by students and teachers alike, the real question comes in why they are still used. A return to the use of assignment notebooks or simply asking permission would solve the problem of using these filthy lanyard hallpasses.

Having an average number of 300 million active monthly users helps keep Instagram as one of the more popular social media sites. Though Instagram is not the first photo sharing application out there, it is one of the stronger ones. Even with Facebook buying out the company in 2013, it didn’t really do much to change the already trending application. This application is used by just about everyone, from someone looking to expand their horizons and explore the world of creative thinkers, along with viewing some spectacular photography, to just another teenager looking for a way to express his or herself, to a way to promote some of the smaller businesses looking to make it big. With the easy-to-use layout smartphone users cannot only take pictures themselves but use some of their favorite photos from the past to post onto their profile. The countless filters that are available to choose from help make each photograph taken just a little more interesting. Keeping tabs on the media’s favorite celebrities seems to be just as easy as taking a look at your friends’ profiles. The verification checkmark next to
their name is the only thing that sets apart any other user and a user with some celebrity status. This is just another way to get the inside look into the lives of the rich and famous. Unlike Tumblr, Instagram is not blocked off servers, such as the school’s. Instagram, while it does contain some inappropriate things, just like any other social media site, has not been found to contain as much as Tumblr. While Tumblr tends to be filled with rants about problems in society, Instagram on the other hand is mostly about just about expressing yourself through photographs you’ve either taken, or photos you find relate to yourself in someway. Many people add cliche quotes as the captions to these posts and use this site just to have some fun, just as many use Facebook and Twitter. Having less of an angsty side to this application helps with the promotions of healthy interaction with youth. It’s not just solely focused on this application either, it happens on each and every social media site. If you haven’t already, get ready to join this booming application and join the almost 60.3 million new users in 2015 alone! Instagram piece by Haley Bikman

In comparison to Instagram’s population of 60 million, Tumblr dominates with a collection of over 400 million creative users ranging from artistic bloggers to humor delving in the use of memes, clever text posts, and GIFs. Topics on Tumblr range from fandoms to fashion, science to art, consisting of interesting debates, stories, and facts that expand from the square frame restrictions on Instagram. However, while this is all well and fun, Tumblr is often blocked on servers, such as the school wifi, due to content restricted to seventeen year olds and up. When school isn’t in session, Tumblr is a popular hotspot for students to unwind and laugh over its renowned humor. Among the popular topics, memes are accessible through Tumblr and its series of creative introverts whose natural habitat is where the glow of a computer screen is the only source of light. Memes, a common topic throughout the internet, are
humorous images or videos that are replicated with slight variations that are more or less relatable to its viewers. Humor is a large part of Tumblr’s fanbase, and of the millions of blogs, many are considered “humor blogs” while others are “art blogs”, “indie blogs”, “music blogs”, “fashion blogs”, and even the “science side of Tumblr”. The possibilities are endless, and often entertaining. Fandoms cover a large part of Tumblr’s content, involving fangirl-and-guys from across the globe to find others gossiping about characters from books, movies, or shows. Fandoms are fans of a particular person, team, fictional character, or more, and are used to celebrate their existence (for the most part). Often times fandoms are filled with “ships”, otherwise known as pairing two characters together that are sometimes not even together in the fictional series or in real life. Tumblr is where artwork, memes, fandoms, and ships come to life to distract teenagers from what they probably should be doing.
Old Classic, Modern Touch
The Grafton Performing Arts Department performed William Shakespeare’s classic play, Romeo and Juliet February 28 to March 1. With the hard work and dedication put into this performance by all members of the cast and crew, this production was one that surely impressed all who watched it. The play was adapted by Mr. Joshua Atkins, and it was set in modern times with Shakespearean language. Junior Abby Stanisch, who played the Nurse, said, “I thought that the modern twist was interesting to see. Overall, it worked out well and I thought that it made the play more fun” The adapted version portrayed the two families with red and blue shirts and represented the neutral characters with those
colors combined, purple. The edgy spin on the play added a captivating aspect and ended up as a successful representation of Mr. Atkins’ vision. Many old and new faces were seen participating in this year’s play. The lead role of Romeo was played by junior James Carpenter, and to many peoples surprise, this was his first school production. His favorite part of being involved was “meeting new amazing people that have become really great friends.” The role of Juliet was played by junior Maddi Hill, who also debuted her acting skills in the winter play. The classic love story between two star crossed lovers with Mr. Atkins modern spin ended as another success for all involved.

Get Your Chil(i) On On February 8, the annual Chili Day took place in the cafeteria and gymnasium. Those attending enjoyed chili made by parent and student volunteers as they watched the students from the Grafton School District perform. Due to the great response from the crowd last year the bands and choirs decided to do another collaboration. The groups did a Beatles Medley which included “Hard Day’s Night”, “Yesterday”, ”I Wanna Hold Your Hand”, ”Michelle”, “Hey Jude.” Chili Day is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the music departments. Along with great food, the music department runs a silent auction during the duration of the performances. Each class was asked to bring in items to put towards a basket to sell; the themed baskets ranged from “Girl’s Night In” to “Movie Theater.” All proceeds went to the betterment of the music departments across the school district.

SWEET AND SOULFUL
BADBADNOTGOOD, an instrumental jazz and hip-hop trio from Toronto, recently released a new album called Sour Soul in collaboration with Wu-Tang rapper Ghostface Killah. The album includes guest appearances by Danny Brown and MF DOOM, among other rappers. The album mixes progressive jazz with Ghostface Killah’s unmistakable flow, creating beats that tell a story with every verse. BBNG isn’t inexperienced when it comes to being a backing band for hip-hop artists; they’ve backed for numerous Odd Future members, produced tracks for Earl Sweatshirt, and even remixed Soulja Boy’s “Pretty Boy Swag.” With numerous studio albums under their belt, they leave imaginative jazz riffs stuck in your head for hours, and Sour Soul is no exception. While most of the songs on this album feature Ghostface Killah, they don’t stray away from their instrumental roots. For instance the track “Experience” starts off with a simple bass riff. As cymbals and rolling keyboard glissandos are added in, the bassline picks up speed and complexity. Trumpets chime in with dissonant accents as strings sweep in the background, pulling the jazz ensemble together for a tune that is more than just background music for a 20’s speakeasy. Positivity leaks through Ghostface Killah’s verses on “Nuggets of Wisdom.” He gives praise to a mentor teaching him that, although he’s walking through solitude, he must remember that staying true to himself will bring him righteousness. Through lessons he’s learned, he has been taught to keep his head up and, when necessary, to stick to himself, even through bad times. “Don’t get sucked
into the scene; the grass ain’t always green, the meat ain’t always lean.” If you have a spare half hour, this album is highly recommended. The talent of the artists featured on this album will leave you stunned, giving you a love for the modern twist that BBNG puts on the historic artform. The fast-paced, down to earth flow that WuTang fans love about Ghostface Killah puts the icing on the metaphorical cake, perfecting a beautiful collaborative album.

BLAST FROM THE PAST
Netflix has many people taking a walk down memory lane. Old television shows are making a comeback, just as vinyls and record players are coming back from the dead (or the attic). More and more teens are starting to like the older, more antique element of things. Undoubtedly the most streamed show on Netflix is a comedy that follows six, 20-something friends in the city of Manhattan, Friends. Junior Emily Welsh said, “I love binge watching it from the beginning.” No one likes waiting a whole week for the next episode, so when Netflix put Friends up, the fans immediately grabbed a pizza and sat on the couch for hours on end. Another show that makes their audience laugh is the hilarious comedy starring Steve Carell, The Office. Many enjoy watching this eccentric group of coworkers with a bowl of popcorn and follow it up by watching it for countless hours. Record players have also been swept off the shelves of stores everywhere. Vinyls should be bought because they have better sound quality, most enjoy the visual appearance of the album art, playing records gives an immerse feeling, crate digging
is fun, and some albums are only available on vinyl. Some like collecting vinyls, its a hobby that many enjoy. Vinyls sales are higher than they have ever been in 15 years; Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Arctic Monkeys and Amy Winehouse are just some of the most popular vinyls going out of stock at stores. That also means that the popularity of CD’s are dropping rapidly. Many people love records because they like the way they sound, and they are superior to other formats. Many young adults are starting to collect them; who wouldn’t love to have a collection of beautiful vinyl art? Junior Kaitlyn Larson said, “I feel that people are more connected to the music, because they physically have to get up to flip the vinyl, clean it off, and then reset the needle.” Not many people know of a little chain record store in Milwaukee called “The Exclusive Company.” They sell an unlimited amount of vinyls, record players, dvd’s, t-shirts, incense, anything and everything old and new. Anyone who has been to The Exclusive Company has been back, it’s quite addicting. To start a vinyl collection check out www.exclusivecompany.com/. So the next time you have a boring Friday night, take a trip down to a record store near you; you’ll never know what you’ll find. Story By Natalie Nowak
And now for your feature presentation...
Photo courtesy of Universal Pictures Cambridge, 1963 It starts with a simple tune on the piano and a family in a lavish interior room. This is The Theory of Everything. The film, which was nominated for best picture, is the story of a young Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne), one of the most brilliant minds in cosmology, and his wife Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones), a student majoring in Spanish and French poetry. We follow them through the incomparable story of love and determination as Stephen faces his greatest challenge-- the imprisonment of an astonishing mind in a deteriorating body. Being diagnosed with ALS, Stephen is told that he only has two years
to live, and even though knowing the heartbreak it would entail, Jane stays with him to be his wife and caretaker. Stephen proves to be a prodigy in his school, seeking an equation that explains everything in the universe and shedding light on a theory that would be his first claim to fame, Hawking Radiation. Even though the now Professor Hawking’s fame is rising, his condition continues to advance. Jane, although tired and now a mother with a second child on the way, remains impeccably strong and stays by his side. This is a story about true strength, amazing determination, and unconditional love. The acting in this film is especially outstanding, with an Oscar nomination for best actress to Felicity Jones and an Oscar win for best actor to Eddie Redmayne. With a powerful main cast and a lovable supporting troop of friends, you are completely immersed in the story. With brilliant writing, colorful imagery, and an excellent film score, The Theory of Everything truly comes to life before your eyes like the brilliant cosmos Hawking studies. The genius pace with which the movie progresses shows the human heart in the man known for his superhuman mind. As the credits role and the popcorn buckets are thrown away, the beautiful story of The Theory of Everything reminds us that time is precious and that the will to live can defy science. Check This Out Story by Jimmy Otworth Many exciting escapades await at the Grafton Public Library. If you’re a teen in the community and are looking for social interaction rather than social media, an answer can be found at our public library. The library makes it easy for anyone in Ozaukee and Sheboygan Counties to get a library card. Children ages five to seventeen need a guardian present to sign a registration form, but those eighteen and above only need proof of a current address in either of the two counties. Our local library stays active with teens around the town, offering activities such as Technology Club, Maker’s Space, Creative Writing, and for those about to take on college, the library offers College Essay Writing classes. Many of these different activities, such as Technology Club and Maker’s Space, have to do with different parts of technology and help participants further understand technology. Also, the library offers the chance to join the
Teen Advisory Board, which is a panel of teens that meets occasionally to read and discuss books as well as plan fun events for teens at the library. The Board has a new theme every month to keep things fresh and interesting for newcomers; this month’s theme is “Unmask,” a superhero based theme. The board allows teens, 6th through 12th grade, to read and elaborate their thoughts on books they read both together and separately, and discuss them with others who have read the same book. It’s like a book club for teens. The person in charge of everything “Teen” with the library, Nicolette Birkholz weighed in on the impact this has on teens. “Reading is extremely important and reading helps with your writing skills, which helps a lot with those going off to college, and the public library is a perfect resource for that.” Extremely enthusiastic and helpful, Birkholz can answer any questions about these different clubs and activities.

Here’s the Dish Creme and Crepe- Cedarburg Downtown Cedarburg is known for its quaint historic strip of rustic shops and charming restaurants. Tucked away in the Cedar Creek Mill is a creperie named Cream and Crepe. Cream and Crepe has a grandma’s house atmosphere with a hipster twist. The service was fast and friendly, if not a bit rushed. Our waitress gave us less than two minutes to look at our menus before returning to take our orders. Their menu includes dinner crepes, sandwiches, salads, soups of the day, and dessert crepes. The turkey croissant and roast beef sandwich were both amazing. The turkey croissant included turkey, lettuce, mayo, tomato and alfalfa sprouts on a buttered croissant. As simple as it sounds, the freshness of the ingredients made it taste all the better. The roast beef sandwich was just as good; on the menu, it is said to be served with “beef sauce”. We were hesitant to try it, so we asked for the it on the side. The thick beef gravy that was served with the roast beef prevailed and instead of ruining the sandwich, made it ten times as good as
the sandwich was without. The dessert crepes were what we were looking forward to most- and they lived up to our expectations. The X-Quisite crepeserved with vanilla ice cream, caramel, hot fudge, and topped with whipped cream and nuts- and the Strawberry Crepe were so light and fluffy; we felt like we were eating a cloud. The comfortable atmosphere Cream and Crepe has, along with their very low prices and extremely scrumptious food options, provide for a wonderful experience for a quiet study date or a night on the town. Atlas BBQ- Grafton Atlas BBQ has held its ground and is the most successful restaurant to stay open in the Paramount Plaza location in downtown Grafton. Michael Tsuchihashi, owner of Atlas said, “It’s been great knowing that my restaurant has been successful for two years without facing any major complications.” It’s a modern, cozy atmosphere and dining was a great overall experience. It was slightly busy for a Monday afternoon, but there wasn’t an extensive wait for a table. The servers were excited to make our dining experience an excellent one with quick service and positive attitudes. Atlas BBQ is the only place in Grafton to get specially cooked barbeque items. The Cuban
“Q-wich” is by far the best item on the entire menu; the smoked ham on it is seared to perfection with the most succulent pulled pork on a toasted herb bun. Swiss cheese, dill pickles and yellow mustard top off the delicious “Q-wich”. This dish starts at $10.95. Atlas fries, on the side, are topped off with seasoned salt and a hint of cinnamon; they are served with Atlas’ famous tangy-tasting mayonnaise, a secret recipe, that kept me going back for more. The Boys Basketball team started the season hot, winning their first four games against Cedar Grove-Belgium, South Milwaukee, Nicolet, and Mayville by more than 10 points each. “We just crushed those teams,” said senior Bryan Sternig. “The team was getting along really well and we were playing together.” Despite their early success the team struggled to win throughout the rest of the regular season, winning only two out of eighteen games. Some of the tougher losses came at the hands of conference rivals Port Washington, Homestead, and Cedarburg. “The loss to Homestead really stung,” said senior Brennen Streff. “We should’ve won, we had them on the ropes at the end of the game.” The team started the playoffs the same way they started the season by wrecking West Bend East by a score of 79-48. The Black Hawks ended the season with a heartbreaking loss to
conference rival Port Washington by a close score of 44-40. The team’s biggest strength for Grafton was the strong play from their big men in the post; this opened up shot opportunities on offense and defending the rim on defense. “We had some great post players that had great vision and instincts, and they really helped open it up for our shooters,” said Streff. “Isaiah (West) really came out of his shell this year, and tended to block any shots in the lane.” The Black Hawks will look to build off this season and grow with a strong core of juniors for next season. Juniors Jarred Kettenhoven, Luke Benzschawel, and Isaiah West played big roles for the team this season and their fellow juniors and sophomores are looking to make next season successful. “I think they’ll be great,” Streff said. “They’ll have height and plenty of talent coming up from JV, especially at the guard positions.”

With 5 sophomores, 2 juniors and 3 seniors, the girls basketball team had a strong season consisting of 7 wins and losses in conference, 13 wins and 9 loss overall. Holding # 5 in conference, the team had a lot of memorable games. “My favorite was the second Germantown game because we played to our full potential. Germantown has always been better than us but we came out with full energy and I feel like that was the first game where we really came together as a team and it really showed on the court.” said sophomore point guard Gillian Waskiewicz. Going into the fourth quarter just wasn’t enough. Germantown ended up defeating the Black Hawks on Friday February 6 with a 44 - 41 final score. The girls kicked off the Regional tournament on Friday February 27
against Coach Steve Reinhart and Coach Ashley Glocke’s hometown, as well as Coach Reinhart’s school, the Slinger Owls. The game was intense. Going into overtime with a score of 32 - 32 really pumped the girls and the fans up, but the Grafton Black Hawks were not ready to give up their season. With a final score of 38 - 34, the girls won their Regional opener against the Slinger Owls. The girls made it to Regional finals against Cedarburg. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs had a little more to bring, but Grafton gave it their all. “My senior year was really special to me because I knew it would be the last time I balled. And it’s going to be so hard to give up the game but I’m glad I got to send my last year with such great girls.” said senior Kayla Borden.

The girls Bull Hawks gymnastics team had a strong season ending with a 3-5 record in dual meets. The team has a total of nine girls with three new freshman. They also had a new coach Renae Weaver, who used to be on the team when she was in high school. Junior Jennifer Woolf said, “It was an interesting adjustment to have a new coach this year because she organized practices differently, but I think our team was really strong this year because she pushed us to do our best.” A typical weekly practice schedule was Monday-Friday 3:00 to 5:00pm at North Shore Gymnastics Academy in Cedarburg. Most of the girls were also on a club team which was a benefit. “Most of the girls on the team had done club gymnastics and had awesome skills,” said sophomore Jacquelyn Miller. For having such a small team, the
Bull Hawks had a pretty diverse skill set. “Our team’s strengths would be that we were really close and cheered each other on, but our weaknesses were that we didn’t have much depth, so if someone got hurt it would’ve been difficult to make a full team,” said Woolf. Even with small numbers the team set high goals. “We would love to make it to state this year,” said senior Riley Luettgen. On February 28, the Bull Hawks competed in the Manitowoc sectionals and finished in 1st place. Junior Jennifer Woolf and senior Riley Luettgen made it to state individually as well. Overall the Bull Hawks can say they had a very successful season finishing 7th at state.

Junior Arturo Duran gets his hand raised after placing 5th at the State tournament in Madison. Duran is the 10th wrestler to place at state in school history.
Even though the Black Hawks started their season off with a loss against the Nicolet Knights, they made huge strides this year with the newcomers. The boys had a conference record of 1-6 and a season dual meet record of 2-9. Juniors Thomas Makela and Arturo Duran, as well as freshman Nicholas Rapp qualified for the sectional tournament. Arturo Duran also made an appearance at the WIAA High School state tournament and took 5th place for the Hawks. Duran is the 10th medal winner in school history at state. Junior captains Arturo Duran, Thomas Makela, and William Pfleger led the team made of
mostly under classmen, to success this season. Leadership by these captains and the coaches is what made this team so successful this season. Junior Arturo Duran stated, “the team is made up of young wrestlers with great potential, and for them to reach the level to compete we must show great leadership.” Grafton will pick up next year with strong wrestlers in many weight classes.

C h e e rl e a d i n g This year the Varsity Competition Cheer team transitioned from a small to large division. This increased difficulty in both stunting and tumbling and twice a week the cheerleaders were given opportunities to improve their tumbling at North Shore Academy of Gymnastics and from Elite Tumbling. Practices ran anywhere between one hour to three hours. “Even when practices were difficult they were fun. It felt good when we got things done,” said sophomore Olivia Stark and as senior, Darian Howard said, “we had to push ourselves to do our best but then we had time to goof around. It required a lot of teamwork.” “You had to have a positive attitude because practices could be stressful,” said Howard. Cheerleading at this level is

dangerous enough as it is, if just one person was in a bad mood it could affect an entire stunt group and therefore affect an entire pyramid. “There was more pressure on the high school team than in middle school,” freshman Alexus Green said. Competitions were exciting because Grafton had a good reputation. Varsity won first place at the Badger Challenge on February 7. On February 14, the team received second place at Green Bay. On February 21 the cheer team competed in the medium division at Regionals. Unfortunately they did not qualify for state. Because of the change in divisions, it was a building year. Coaches Cari Grabow and Beth Anderson are excited to move forward into a large division.

B L AC K H AW K S OF THE MONTH Ashley Fena
What’s your most embarrassing moment? “When I was in second grade I had one of those fabric belts and I was playing Sophomore Ashley Fena was with it and we were just sitting in class. randomly selected as our I put it behind my chair and I half tied Student of the Month. it in front of me and then I accidentally We asked her a few questions to tied myself to the chair. When it was get to know her better. time for recess, everybody went out and I had to stay behind. The teacher had to cut the belt from the chair. I was so embarrassed; everybody was like ‘How did she tie herself to the chair?’” What has been your most exciting moment? “The most exciting moment would probably be when I found out I was going to be an aunt. We were just sitting in the kitchen, and my sister said something that kinda sparked my attention, so I was like “Is there something I don’t know?” All she did was smile at me and giggle and I knew instantly that she was pregnant and that I was going to be an aunt. It was really exciting.”
What’s the scariest thing that’s ever happened to you? “When I was in eighth grade we went on a D.C. trip. Right when we got off the plane, I went to the bathroom and when I came out, the whole group was gone. I thought I was lost and left behind. I freaked out so bad. Then it happened again at one of the World War Memorials. My friend and I were walking around and we noticed there was nobody from our group around. So we had to call our teacher and ask where they were because we got lost. That was really scary.”
Carl Hader
Autos teacher Carl Hader was randomly selected as our Teacher of the Month. We asked him a few questions to get to know him better.
What is one thing you can’t live without? “My family, my wonderful wife Sally of 36 years, and two wonderful children, both GHS grads.”
What has been your greatest accomplishment? “I have no “greatest accomplishment”. The combined experiences of a rewarding career are what do it for me and keep me going.” Favorite foods? “I love ethnic foods, especially German & Italian, as well as a good Wisconsin Lake Perch, or fish fry. I also cook a lot. Taco night at the Haders are family favorites!”
How does it feel to have 2nd generation students in your class? “It makes you feel a little old, but only for a few minutes. Then you feel respected and also blessed that past students would send their children through your class and that you’ve stayed relevant for so long. It is really interesting to have moms and dads at parent-teacher conferences who were my students in the past.”
