Growing up on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Shane spent all his spare time on Pittwater and Sydney Harbour, before starting his career at just 16 with Mariner Cruisers. He undertook his Boat Building and Shipwright apprenticeship at Clontarf Marina, learning every facet of operations and merging his passion with his livelihood. An opportunity on the Gold Coast enticed Shane north and he spent 15 years at Runaway Bay Marina, 11 of those in a Shipyard Management position. He has been at The Boat Works since it commenced operations and today, he is integral to the success and stature of the business.

EVOLUTION From its early days in the 1980s as a slipway and yard under the stewardship of legendary boat builder, Bruce Harris, it was known as the only place to come for boat service and repairs. Bruce “Sharky” Harris was renowned for his ingenuity and craftsmanship, developing what became known as Shark Cats for leisure, commercial and patrol use, as well as the Cuddles series of displacement cruisers. Strategically situated within the burgeoning boat building precinct, the yard attracted a loyal clientele from all over Australia. Today, owned and run by Tony Longhurst, The Boat Works has entered a new era of service. In the past three years, Tony has invested in a $20 million development program to elevate the premises to industryleading standard. Thanks to the dynamic team, led by General Manager Shane Subichin, and a complete range of top marine trades, the facility has evolved into what is considered Australia’s greatest boatyard. Located at the entrance of the Gold Coast Marine Precinct, Coomera, The Boat Works is

a purpose-built facility over 23 acres, comprising worldclass equipment and a team of qualified, energised marine professionals at your service. With direct water access for every sort of vessel, from trailerable craft to yachts and multihulls up to 36.5-metres (110-feet), The Boat Works’ haul out bay boasts padded sheave blocks for added protection, ensuring every boat is handled with the utmost care. Doing the lifting is our 100 Tonne Travel Lift, known as “Harry”, which carries boats up to 110feet with a beam of 26-feet and the 70 Tonne travel lift, “Sid”. Then there’s our 45 Tonne hydraulic submersible Sealift, ideal for wide-beam catamarans, particularly popular in the idyllic cruising grounds of coastal Queensland, north to the Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef.

Race Weeks in review For The Boat Works Extreme 40, the Queensland Season of Sail was a ripe with hot competition, repeated line honours and new recruits to multihull racing.

Against stiff competition from Frank Racing, Mad Max and Morticia, The Boat Works with its striking orange and silver hulls managed to pull off line honours in every race at Airlie Beach Race Week, with a mixed bag of trials and triumphs at Audi Hamilton Island Race Week. Skipper Julian Griffiths attributes their success to “synergy between the crew and a bloody good boat”, while the hiccups at Hamo “were all part of learning about the new boat, which we’ve only had for six months”. Owned by Tony Longhurst, The Boat Works Extreme 40 is the rebadged and modified SAP boat from the Extreme Sailing Series – which took out overall second in 2015. Its characteristics include “thrilling speed, exhilaration and fast paced sailing”, according to Julian. 88

“Racing, you’re on the edge the whole time. Things happen so quickly, you rely on the team working together. It takes time to find your rhythm and once you do, and you’re up on one hull, there’s nothing like it.” At Airlie Beach, The Boat Works managed line honours in every race except one, pipped by main rival, Frank Racing, by just 15 seconds. “Our ratings were quite high at Airlie, so we were surprised with third overall,” reports Julian. Hamo was a different and disappointing story. “We had a gear failure in one race, then missed a change of course. Lesson learnt from that experience. We took out line honours against Frank Racing, then came second in the other races. In all, it was a great learning curve. We hadn’t sailed the boat over 18 knots and we got up to 24.5 knots at top speed. It was quite bumpy too, which is not ideal conditions for the boat.”

During Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island Race Weeks, guests, sponsors and some celebrities were given the chance to run “hot laps” on the Extreme 40. “It was the opportunity to show people how much fun sailing on the Extreme 40 can be – it’s a blast! They see that it’s all about wind and strategy – they’re the tools you’re competing with.” Guests included Ocean Magazine, Club Marine top dealers and CEO, Simon McLean, as well as legendary former Wallaby’s player, George Gregan, in a promotional team-up with Landrover Sports at Airlie, while at Hamilton Island, VIP crew included 7-time World Champion surfer, Layne Beachley and Kirk Pengilly of INXS fame. Layne was characteristically confident on the water, and in the fading breeze, regretted that the Extreme 40 didn’t live up to its name on this

occasion. “Considering it is called an Extreme 40, I was expecting it to be a lot more extreme. It was loads of fun and certainly not as scary as the Sydney to Hobart. Kirk and I absolutely loved the experience and look forward to spending a day on the boat racing with them next year.” Layne was graphic in her recounting of her 2015 Sydney-Hobart experience aboard Perpetual Loyal, when it came second to Wild Oats XI. “I was sick the whole way. Whilst my job was predominantly to hang on and stay out of the way, I had an absolute ball and Tony, Julian and the guys did a fantastic job all regatta. “As a major sponsor of Audi Hamilton Island Race Week for the past 11 years, Club Marine is fortunate to have seen the event evolve into what is unquestionably a world class regatta that is simply unrivalled in Australia. Outside of the obvious branding benefits, the event provides us with a great opportunity to get out on the water with our members and our business partners.”

For us with the Extreme 40, it was the first time we had raced in solid winds and we were amazed how fast and responsive the boat was. It was brilliant to be able to share a little bit of that that with our partners and guests. “For me personally, it was a real eye opener to see how hard the team had to work to keep it at max speed all the time. We will definitely be back in 2017!”

The Boat Works is located at Coomera, fed by the Gold Coast Broadwater. The Broadwater is without doubt the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the region’s assets. Add to that the growing number of boat registrations in southeast Queensland and people flocking here to enjoy this water wonderland and the Broadwater is in higher demand than ever. The Broadwater is a cultivated natural attraction. Once a shallow estuary, the Broadwater has undergone dramatic changes since the 1970s, including the construction of the Gold Coast’s network of artificial waterways that account for 90 percent of Australia’s canal estates. The mouth of the Broadwater, the Seaway was completed in 1986 to stabilise the location of the Nerang River Entrance for boating safety, flood mitigation and coastline protection. www.theboatworks.com.au

Its construction created a larger tidal range within the Broadwater with lower low tides, posing a danger to the boating public and impacting on the flow of water. The vision of the designers of the Seaway recommended maintenance work “in perpetuity” to ensure its health, as a habitat to various fish and marine species and in its role to mitigate flooding caused by tidal action or weather conditions. With investment in works at the southern end of the Broadwater, close to the brilliant Parklands amenities, Southport Yacht Club and beachheads around its shoreline, the Broadwater could be the venue of an exciting calendar of aquatic sport events, reaping significant revenue for the community in hotel nights, entertainment, tourism, employment and investment.

Boat Service Gold Coast supplies engines and outboard motors. Boats are on show all year round in what is the largest hardstand display in the southern hemisphere. There is a large selection on-water as well as in the showrooms. Make a day of it and spend time viewing boats before or after lunch at The Galley Café. TMG is home to Lagoon catamarans in Queensland. John Cowpe, TMG managing director says the move to The Boat Works was a logical step for his company, which is part of the Windcraft Group and sole importer of Lagoon catamarans. “Queensland is the main market for catamarans. The Boat Works offers tremendous access to the epicentre of the cat market. Plus it has the complete service centre on-site and the showroom is highly visible, which really does the Lagoon brand justice.” Heading up the Queensland team is Glen Love, who has a strong background in yacht sales and is looking forward to bringing the Lagoon brand to the Gold Coast. “We have the prime position at the gateway to the Marine Precinct, and we have an ultra-modern, open-plan showroom displaying our eyachts motor yacht division, comprising Axopar, Sealine and Outer Reef.
