TRESCO

Welcome to our easter show THE TROPICAL DELIGHTS FROM THE SUMMER OF 2018 HAVE ARRIVED

IN THIS, OUR EASTER SHOW.

rob braybrooks FOUND HIS

INSPIRATION IN THE MIRROR SEAS WHICH HAD BECOME THE NORM,

geoffrey bickley DELIGHTED IN THE JOY OF LEAPING MACKEREL, AND lizzie black TOOK HER LEAD FROM THE LUSH ABBEY GARDEN.

john bampfield CONTINUED HIS EXPLORATION OF WHERE LAND MEETS THE SEA, INTERJECTING NOTES OF VIBRANCY WITHIN BOTH.

teresa pemberton, ALWAYS A COLOURIST, EXPANDED HER

REPERTOIRE TO INCLUDE STILL LIFE AGAINST THE LANDSCAPE, ALLOWING HER TO RUN AMOK WITH HER PIGMENTS TO GREAT EFFECT.

SURPASSING HIMSELF THIS YEAR IS tom holland WITH A VERITABLE

RAINBOW OF FLORA DANCING BELOW SORBET SKIES. THE SEASON HAS BARELY BEGUN AND WE ARE AWASH WITH CREATIVITY. ENJOY!

YOUR EYES ARE WIDE OPEN.

THESE PAINTINGS ARE MY ATTEMPT TO CONVEY

SOMETHING OF HOW IT FEELS TO ME TO BE ON TRESCO.

I USE COLOURS AND TEXTURES,

KNOWLEDGE AND IMAGINATION, AND PAINT.

IT’S ALL I HAVE. THAT, AND AN ONGOING LOVE

FOR THE PLACE.

A FAIRLY MILD WINTER IN TERMS OF WEATHER THIS LAST YEAR,

ALTHOUGH JUST LATELY THE STRONG CONTINUOUS WINDS

HAVE PROVED HAZARDOUS TO SOME BIRDS BEING BLOWN OFF COURSE.

NICE TO HEAR THE CETTI’S WARBLER HAD BEEN SPOTTED ON THE ISLANDS. AND ALREADY A SWALLOW HAS BEEN SEEN.

THE BUZZARDS SEEM TO BE MORE COMMON NOW, ESPECIALLY

WHERE I LIVE. WE HAVE ONE THAT COMES EVERY MORNING HOPING TO FIND A RABBIT OR TWO IN THE FIELD.

THIS YEAR I HAVE INCLUDED IN MY CARVINGS A COUPLE OF NEW BIRDS

- THE BLACK SWANS AND SOME OLD FAVOURITES.

IT IS A HAPPY DAY WHEN I ARRIVE ON

TRESCO TO PAINT. THIS YEAR I WAS SPOILT BY A HALCYON DAY AND LEFT IN A SLIGHTLY

TERRIFYING STORM.

BEING A PLEIN AIR PAINTER I OFTEN HAVE A

STRATEGY DEPENDING ON WEATHER AND TIME

OF DAY. IT IS LIKE A GAME: SHELTERING BEHIND ROCKS ON THE BEACH, RACING BACK BEFORE

THE RAIN REALLY SETS IN AND RUSHING OUT AS

THE SUN APPEARS FOR ITS LAST FAREWELL AT SUNSET.

teresa pemberton COMBINING STILL LIFE OBJECTS WITH A HINTERLAND OF SEA OR LANDSCAPE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A FAVOURITE

SUBJECT AND THIS YEAR I HAVE EXPERIMENTED WITH

NATURE'S

OBJECTS

OF

FLOWERS,

FRUIT

AND

VEGETABLES AGAINST THOSE SPECIAL BLUES OF SCILLY.

I LOVE THE EARLY FLOWERS AND HENCE NARCISSUS HOLD A SPECIAL CONTRAST AGAINST COOL BLUES.

THEN THERE ARE THE WARMER COLOURS OF SUNNY

DAYS WHEN THE ROCKS HOLD A VARIETY OF RED AND

PINK AND ORANGE HUES, WHICH SEEM TO SEEP INTO THE SANDY SHORES. THE MULTI-COLOURED ROCKS ARE

EXAGGERATED BY THE SOFT SHOWERS OF RAIN OR THE LAPPING TIDES.

A CENTURY AGO, GEOFFREY GARNIER STOOD OUT AMONG

WEST CORNWALL’S FAMOUS NEWLYN SCHOOL AS THE ONLY ARTIST TO DEDICATE HIMSELF ENTIRELY TO THE ART OF

PRINT-MAKING. I’VE ALWAYS LOVED HIS WOOD-CUTS AND

AQUATINT ETCHINGS, AND THE WAY THOSE MECHANICAL

TECHNIQUES RESULTED IN SUCH BEAUTIFUL PIECES OF ART.

HERE ON THE SCILLIES, A FEW YEARS ON, AND 40 MILES

FURTHER WEST, I’VE BEEN INSPIRED TO LOOK FOR THOSE

FAMILIAR SILHOUETTES THAT STAND OUT IN THE TRESCO

LANDSCAPE. TREES, BIRDS, BOATS, BUILDINGS, WATER AND LANDFORMS. I HOPE YOU ENJOY THEM.
