WHAT IS “THE BONE-I-FIDE PET JOURNAL?”

Snacks & Bites ............................................................................................4

We all love our pets, they really do become family members no matter if they are a rescued pup or a purebred champion. They are the slobbery face waiting for us after a long day of work or the silky soft purring pillow curled up with us in the evening. Both dogs and cats fill the hearts of so many residents here in Aiken, and for that reason, The Bone-i-Fide Bakery is creating The Bone-i-Fide Pet Journal, a journal that will become the best information source for all things cats and dogs. Each monthly issue will feature a story on a local pet, a vet column, adoptable dogs local rescue groups, articles profiling high quality foods, information, tips, feature local pet related businesses and organizations, breed highlighting, and so much more. It is our goal to establish a reliable, fun, interesting, high quality publication all about the most important residents of our town, our pets.

SNACKS & BITES

Quick PB & Banana Treat!

5 Healthy, Delicious “People” foods you

Elvis would be proud!

can share with your dog!

Treats for all! These quick, healthy snacks can be made super teeny or extra large depending on the size of your dog, and pack parsley power for freshening breath. Tasty and easy to make, they’re perfect for taking on walks, for training, or just plain old treat time. This recipe is easy to tinker with. You can substitute dried mint for half of the parsley, if you like. And don’t hesitate to adjust the size of the treats to accommodate very small or very large dogs, baking them a few minutes less or a few minutes more, as needed. If your dog has challenges chewing, grind the rolled oats in a food processor before adding them to the mixture. Makes approximately twodozen treats.

1. Peanut Butter! Such a classic “human” snack! Although in some instances, people can be highly allergic to any nut products, the same cannot be said for dogs! Peanut Butter serves as a high protein snack that your dog will love. Try smearing it inside of their favorite toy, or simply let them lick it off a spoon! 2. Pumpkin is a good source of fibre and beta carotene (a source of vitamin A). Dogs need fibre in their diet. The current trend is towards highly digestible diets that lower stool volume and this is not necessarily a good thing. Keeping the GI tract moving helps keep the cells lining the gut healthy. 3. Blueberries are a wonderful supplement to ad to your dogs diet. Not only do dogs love the burst of “berriness” mixed in with their kibble, blueberries provide free radical antioxidants. 4. Apples are great crunchy treats for your dog. Apples with the skin on are full of plant chemicals (phytonutrients) that are thought to be protective against some types of cancer in humans. They are a source of vitamins A and C and fibre. Apple seeds, however, contain cyanide so your dog should not be allowed to eat the core. Though the effects of a few apple seeds will likely not harm your dog, the deleterious effects can accumulate over time if allowed to eat apple seeds regularly.

INGREDIENTS: 1 banana, peeled 1 cup oat flour 2/3 cup rolled oats 1/2 cup dried parsley 3 tablespoons peanut butter 1 egg, beaten DIRECTIONS:

5. Yogurt is a good source of available calcium and protein. When choosing yogurt, pick one that has live active bacteria and no sugars or artificial sweeteners. The active bacteria may act as probiotics. If your pooch is pudgy, make sure that you pick fat-free yogurt but not one that contains fat substitutes.

Preheat oven to 300°F. Put banana in a large bowl and use a spoon or potato masher to mash it thoroughly. Add oat flour, oats, parsley, peanut butter, and egg and stir well to combine. Set aside for 5 minutes. Roll mixture into 24 balls, using about 1 tablespoon dough for each; transfer to a large parchment paper-lined baking sheet as done. Use the back of a spoon or the heel of your hand to press each ball into a (1 1/2 to 2 inch) coin. Bake until firm and deep golden brown on the bottom, 40 to 45 minutes. Set aside to let cool completely.

Doc Holly Speaks

1721 Whiskey Rd. • Aiken, S.C. 29801 • 803-648-5489

Congrats, Carly, on the first issue of the Boneifide Pet Journal! I’m happy to be a part of it. We’re all pet lovers. Anything that can be done to educate owners and make pets live longer, better lives is a no brainer. I’m looking forward to writing monthly articles and answering any questions that your clients may have. First a little background...

We’re part of the community. We want to know you and have you know us. Yearly Heartworm Clinics, the Paws for Cancer Race (now in its 12th year with over $100,000 raised for the American Cancer Society), sterilizing over 200 cats in 2010 for the SOS (Stomp Out Strays) program, corporate sponsors for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and Cumbee Center all show our doctors care.

I’ve been practicing veterinary medicine for 24 years. Time has flown by since I graduated from the University of Georgia (I even worked on UGA VI when he blew his ACL!) and moved to Aiken. It’s hard to define the “best” decisions of our lives but becoming a veterinarian, marrying my husband and having a daughter and moving to S.C. are WAY up there on my list! I bought Veterinary Services from Dr. Grady McElmurray (the first veterinarian in Aiken) in 1987 and have enjoyed every moment.

Veterinary medicine is about relationships. It’s about the animals who need us for good health and the people whose lives these animals live to enrich. The power of the human-animal bond is a mighty force. We feel privileged to be a part of it. Look us over (www.aikenpetvet.com), talk to us (803-6485489), take a tour. Friend us on Facebook. We want to be part of your family.

Veterinary Services

Veterinary Services is on Whiskey Rd. next to Zaxby’s restaurant, and we celebrated 41 years this year. Dr. McElmurray had the forethought to become accredited with the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) in 1952. This is a huge milestone and sets our hospital apart as only 17% of veterinary hospitals in the U.S. are AAHA certified. Every 3 years we must be inspected and, after passing a rigorous 700 page standard document, submitting xrays, case studies, and more, we are awarded the AAHA distinction. We are very proud of being the best that we can be.

“We put our best paw forward.” Dr. Holly Woltz Dr. Jamie Herndon and Dr. Kevin Weis Dedicated to high quality modern veterinary medicine. Committed to old-fashioned care and compassion.

We think of our clients as family and your pet as our own. Dr. Kevin Weis excels in Internal Medicine (give him a challenging case and he digs in). Dr. Jamie Herndon is happiest doing surgery (all our surgeries are done with laser). I’m happiest solving skin problems and working with geriatric patients. Our devoted staff (many have been with us over 10 years) goes the extra mile offering grooming (Phil has groomed Aiken pets for 36 years), boarding (complete with email pictures and walks in the park), dental services, Specialist referrals, emergency services, and an employee who lives on site so your pet is never alone. We can give you answers quickly with our digital xray system, in-house blood diagnostics, blood and eye pressures and EKGs.

HAPPY DOGS LEND A HELPING PAW

Article by: Carly Jordan

The handsome dog gracing the first issue of The Bone-i-Fide Pet Journal, is Charlie. Charlie is a mixed breed dog who was rescued in 2002 in Wilmington, NC. Charlie belongs to Susan and Alan Cohen, who live here in Aiken. Charlie has such a sweet tempered disposition that it was no surprise to me, when I found out that Charlie is a Registered Therapy Dog. Therapy dogs are dogs that have been trained to provide comfort and affection to all types of people. They visit in Hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, and schools among other places. Their temperament is whats most important. They must be calm, friendly, affectionate, patient and be able to be at ease in new surroundings. Children often enjoy hugging dogs, where as many adults simply enjoy petting the dogs, and they must be up for either. Therapy dogs are often used in schools and different reading programs around the country. Learning to read can be a daunting process to both parent and child. Children often worry about making mistakes and get nervous when having to read in front of their peers. This can add stress, and make learning to read an unpleasant task for some young people. One way in which therapy dogs have been found to help is by letting a child read to them. The dogs will sit there, and listen eagerly as the child reads. They may start out a little rocky, but as the continue to read, they begin to

relax and things start to flow a little better. They are not being judged, they are not being corrected. If they read a sentence and don’t quite pronounce a word right, or maybe they need a little extra time on a word, the dog continuously sits there, with the same eager smile as always and they in turn show the child that its ok to take a little extra time, “I am not going anywhere.” Many children who participate in these types of

programs, begin to gain confidence and often it extends beyond just learning to read. Teachers have noted that some of the children that participate in these types of programs now raise their hand in class and speak out, when before they simply didn’t have the courage. Charlie goes all over Aiken visiting places with Susan. Some of the places he goes are Shadow Oaks, UniCare, MCG Children’s Center, Camp Rainbow and East Aiken Elementary School. “Charlie visits with everyone, not just the patients or residents, but doctors, nurses, and social workers all enjoy him, I think it relieves some stress for all, and at the school, children read to him and pat him, and he loves it all! Susan explained to us. Susan and Charlie have been volunteering in the Therapy Dog programs for the past 4 years. “I became interest in volunteering and having Charlie become a Therapy dog, after hearing about it from some

7

friends, and I thought that it would be something Charlie would enjoy and it is away for us to bring some happiness to people.” says Susan. Trainning to become a Therapy Dog is a lot of work, but also fun. There are different organizations that register dogs to be Therapy Dogs. One of the Organizations is Therapy Dogs, Inc. “To belong to Therapy Dogs International (TDI®) all dogs must be tested and evaluated by a Certified TDI Evaluator. A dog must be a minimum of one (1) year of age and have a sound temperament. Each dog must pass a temperament evaluation for suitability to become a Therapy Dog, which includes the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen Test (CGC). The test will also include the evaluation of the dog’s behavior around people with the use of some type of service equipment (wheelchairs, crutches, etc.).” (www.tdi-dog.org) Therapy dogs bring happiness and success to so many people, if you have the time, and a dog with the needed temperament, maybe you too can be apart of the Therapy Dog world.
