Lake Pomme de Terre by Karolyn Dunning

Pomme de Terre Lake lies in the rugged, tree covered hills of the Missouri Ozarks. The building of the Pomme de Terre Dam was authorized in 1938 as part of a comprehensive flood control plan for the Missouri River Basin. Dam construction was completed in 1961. The lake covers 7,790 acres at the multipurpose pool. During periods of heavy rain, the lake can increase to 16,100 acres as excess runoff is impounded to prevent downstream flooding. Pomme de Terre Lake works in conjunction with several other Corps-operated projects to provide flood protection for the Osage River Basin and the lower Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Recreation, water quality, and fish and wildlife enhancement are major benefits of the lake. Pomme de Terre Lake is known for excellent fishing. The lake has been stocked with walleye, large mouth bass, blue gill, crappie and muskellunge. You will also find white bass, catfish, carp, and drum. The lands surrounding the lake provide excellent hunting opportunities for whitetailed deer, eastern wild turkey, rabbit, quail, and waterfowl.

camping, hiking, swimming, boating, and other water sports. People enjoy our swimming beaches and parks, hiking and nature trails, golf course, bowling alley, race track, and restaurants. We have four marinas on the lake that offer rentals of jet skis, pontoon boats, fishing and ski boats and dock slips. There are several fishing guide services at the lake. We have many local festivals every year and our “Fireworks over the Water 4th of July celebration is fun for the whole family. A variety of antique stores and flea markets provides hours of interesting shopping. There are six modern campgrounds operated by the Corps of Engineers and two modern campgrounds operated by Missouri State Parks. We have four swimming beaches at the lake. Our parks offer areas for playing tennis, volleyball, baseball, basketball and playground areas for younger children. We also have several privately owned RV parks in the area. For those who don’t like to give up all the creature comforts of home, we have a Bed and Breakfast and several motels and resorts at Pomme de Terre.

Whatever your interests, you are sure to find The clear water of Pomme de Terre Lake and the something to make you happy at Pomme de Terre rolling Ozark hills provide an excellent setting for Lake.

What’s New

at the

By Glen Locke U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers

2011 and 2012 were busy years for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Pomme de Terre Lake. The final phases of the Stilling Basin repair contract were completed with the installation of the accessible sidewalk, fencing/handrails, and the new trash racks installed in the control tower. Other projects that were completed were three new park entrance stations (Outlet, Damsite, and Nemo Parks), two new accessible playgrounds (Outlet and Nemo), and a replacement fishing dock near the Project Office. Some repairs were also made to shorelines in various parks following high lake elevations. A life Jacket Loaner Board was constructed with funds from the Nathan & Brian Keese Water Safety Foundation. It was placed into operation at the boat ramp at Nemo Park. The board is intended to raise awareness to the importance of wearing PFD’s and to pro-

4

vide some loaner PFD’s for anyone who doesn’t have one for the day. Funding for the PFD’s was graciously provided by Lucas Oil, and the actual PFD’s were provided at minimal cost by Nemo Landing Marina. Additional Life Jacket Loaner Boards are planned for Nemo and Wheatland Swim Beaches and for the boat ramps at Lightfoot and Wheatland Parks. The courtesy loading docks at Wheatland and Lightfoot parks will be replaced with new ones, and the swim beach at Wheatland Park has been replenished with sand from the Missouri River. Volunteers have been busy providing labor for many small projects – clearing brush, painting, assisting in the cleaning of facilities, and regular trail and ball field maintenance. Their contributions greatly reduce expenditures of limited Project funds. Our annual Fish Habitat Program was a success again with a coordinated effort by

the Missouri Department of Conservation and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Approximately one hundred fish attractors were placed in the lake. A new vault toilet was placed at Nemo Park to replace an aging composting toilet that was no longer functioning properly. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is leading the way to “go green”. We are working to replace our aging and inefficient lighting with new efficient LED lights, lowering our energy needs. As always, visitor safety is a primary concern. We continue to work with local schools and other civic organizations to provide water safety programs and educate the public about the importance of water safety. One life lost at the lake is one too many. We are always committed to work with our stakeholders and partners to leverage our resources to provide the best possible recreation experiences.

Pittsburg Volunteer Fire Department Upgrade By Brenda Vaughan

The Pittsburg Volunteer Fire Department has received a Class 7 rating for service areas within five miles of each fire station. (The main station is located on Route J in Pittsburg with a satellite station east of Nemo on Route NN.) This means lower fire insurance rates for people living in the area. The fire department was recently inspected by the Insurance Services Office, which provides fire protection classifications for the insurance industry. Not all insurance companies use this rating, so please check with your agent and see if you can save money on your home owners insur-

ance. The department had a 9 rating and was able to lower it to a 7 rating for anyone located within five miles of each fire station.

ing is another in a long line of progressive milestones for the Pittsburg Fire Department and certainly a community asset.

Fire Chief, David Murphy, said he was proud of the department’s achievement and noted that the inspection preparation took several months of extensive training as well as equipment improvements and upgrades. Like all seven fire departments in Hickory County, Pittsburg Volunteer Fire Department operates through annual subscribers fees from the people within the area it serves. This improved ISO rat-

The department is always looking for better ways to improve fire protection in their service area and will continue to do so in the future. If you would like information about what the department is doing or would like to be a volunteer, please feel free to come by the main station on Route J, call at 417-852-4676, or go to the web site www.pvfdmo.com.

50 Years at Pomme de Terre By Don Ginnings of The Index Lake Pomme de Terre has been in existence for just over half a century, has had an economic and social impact on the Ozarks, and continues to provide flood control to the area as well as recreation services and facilities to hundreds of thousands of people When Lake Pomme de Terre was formally dedicated and placed in service in 1961, most tourism centered around water. Air conditioning was quite rare then, and most homes, cars and business places were uncomfortable during the summer months. So when people were off work, they headed to the water. Pomme had good beaches and the cleanest water in the state, so hundreds of thousands of people often crowded into the lake area on summer weekends. Camping was different in those days before travel trailers and motor homes became popular. Camping areas around the lake had rest rooms and shower facilities, but camping generally meant sleeping on the ground in small tents crammed beside other small tents, with crude campfires and few creature comforts. On some holiday weekends, tents were so crowded in the limited camping areas that campers sometimes had to set up their tents on the state highway rights-of-way adjacent to the campgrounds. Through the years, Pomme campground facilities have been expanded and modernized to keep pace with the needs and

6

desires of lake area visitors. Today state and federal campgrounds around the lake are much larger than when the lake was new. And campsites are fully equipped to supply the electrical and water services needed. Most of the campsites have been built up with landscaping timbers so the large motor homes or travel trailers can pull through with minimal leveling and quick set-up, and they are spaced to allow room for the campers to enjoy the area without feeling crowded. Rocky overgrown hillsides have been transformed into beautiful locations where people can park and appreciate the area’s beauty while enjoying modern camping comforts. But for people who still like to spread their sleeping bag on the ground in a tent set out under the stars, those places are still available. Early lake visitors generally brought their consumable supplies like food and gasoline when they came to the area. But gradually the convenience of eating at lake area restaurants enticed more people away from the task of preparing and serving sandwiches or cooked food at the campsite. Part of the logic is that a vacation isn’t a vacation if someone has to spend hours preparing and serving food to the group. The lake area has seen the number of area restaurants and the variety of food services grow through the decades. Today you can enjoy a steak in a comfortable

www.pommedeterrechamber.com

restaurant atmosphere, grab a burger and fries at a drive-in, take out pizzas or subs, or sit down in any number of specialty or family style restaurants around the lake. Convenience stores have also expanded to meet the needs of lake area visitors until some of them have become like miniature malls. You can buy fuel, get prepared foods, shop for souvenirs, find plumbing or electrical supplies, fill your tackle box, locate parts for your vehicle or camper, find items you forgot to bring, or even buy groceries if you want to eat around your campsite. On-the-water facilities have changed as well at Lake Pomme de Terre as the trends and needs changed. In the early years, experienced anglers often did not own boats or motors, but usually rented them from marinas on the lake where they chose to fish. At Pomme, dockhands at the four marinas were usually quite busy on weekend setting up 5-horsepower or 9.9-horsepower outboard motors on 14-foot or 16-foot v-bottom fishing boats used by most anglers. Few boats had trolling motors or live-wells then. Fishermen just paddled around the areas where they fished, or fired up the small motors when they need to move or to work against the wind. In those days, pickups were not common vehicles for the general public and were considered vehicles used primarily for farm use or commercial delivery services. My, how

those trucks have changed! The typical fisherman drove a station wagon such as a Ford Country Squire or a Chevy Bel Air. Dock hands would carry the angler’s fishing tackle from the parking area to the marina, then load it in the rented aluminum fishing boat, ensure that each person had a flotation cushion, start the outboard, and send the fishing party off for a day on the lake. Several young men in the area earned good wages and tips providing those services. Today, most anglers have modern boats with high-tech GPS systems, elaborate fishlocating devices, and 300-horsepower four-stroke engines that get them from one location to another quickly while maneuvering around stumps and fishing structures with foot-controlled trolling motors. To accommodate these boats, access ramps around the lake have been widened and lengthened, and paved parking areas are designed so the large pickups and long boat trailers can

easily get to and from the boat ramps with a minimum of difficulty.

Resorts and motels changed as tourism needs changed, and today the lake has numerous accommodations to fit the needs of the wide variety of tourists to the area. Some are located almost on the water with boat ramps, docks and other lake facilities. Others are in the various small communities around the area. The lake area has also seen modernized beaches, expanded shower and restroom facilities, added trails, new tennis courts and ballfields, expansive picnic shelters and improved roads to and through the area.

Highway Patrol Urges Water Safety To Ensure A Safe Boating Experience The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Water Patrol Division wishes you a fun and exciting trip on Missouri’s waterways. Make sure safety is a part of your trip planning. Be sure the safety equipment on your boat is in good working order before leaving the dock. This includes making sure your fire extinguisher is fully charged and you and your passengers know the location of the extinguisher. Be sure all the mechanical components on your boat are working. Check the horn and electric bilge ventilation blower. If you are going to be out anytime near dark make sure the lighting on your boat works. Most importantly, make sure you have the proper number of life jackets on your boat and that they are in good condition. Missouri law requires that children under seven years of age have a life jacket on at all times while on

board a vessel unless they are in a cabin area, and that there is a life jacket available and readily accessible for use in an emergency for all other passengers. The Highway Patrol recommends all passengers onboard wear a life jacket. Boats 16 feet and longer must have a throwable type of flotation device on board the boat. Most people are familiar with these devices and call them ring buoys or seat cushions. Falling overboard is the most common type of fatality accident. So, in addition to wearing life jackets, proper seating is very important. Make sure all boat passengers are seated in the designated seating areas and not on the deck areas of your vessel while under way. Other safety equipment you should have available on your vessel--that is not required by law--would include a first aid kit, paddle, anchor, and rope.

Make sure you have a float plan filed, which means someone knows when you should return to port. Don’t forget your sunscreen and remember to pack plenty of water while on the lake. Designate a skipper if alcohol is going to be part of your plans. In Missouri, the legal blood alcohol content limit on the water is .08% which is the same as the roadways. It can take less alcohol on the water to slow your reaction time down due to the other natural stressors you are exposed to, such as the rocking motion of the boat, heat from the sun, and noise from the wind and engine vibration. Be safe while out on the water. If you should need emergency assistance on the water you can reach the closest Missouri State Highway Patrol troop headquarters by dialing *55 from a cellular telephone or 1-800-525-5555.

of the parks provide shower buildings, sanitary dump stations and playgrounds. Four of the parks have swimming beaches. Because safety at our parks is very important, all state and federal campgrounds are routinely patrolled by Park Rangers and Hickory County Deputies. Besides our eight public campgrounds, we have several lovely privately owned RV parks scattered around the lake. You will find a variety of amenities offered at these parks but all have electric and water sites and most offer either sanitary dump sites or sewer hookup. You will find friendly owners and clean, shady campsites. There’s an App for That from MDC for Missouri Anglers Taken from The Index

Missouri anglers can now get high-tech help locating fishing spots with the Missouri Department for Conservation’s (MDC) Find MO Fish mobile application for smart phones, tablets, and other mobile communication devices. MDC developed the mobile app with Timmons Group (timmonsgis.com), a national leader in innovative geospatial solutions. Using the Find MO Fish application, users can view location maps of Missouri’s major lakes, rivers and streams. The application also generates fast and accurate driving directions to numerous MDC boat ramps across the state. The application also allows users to find exact locations of underwater fish structures and guide their boats to their favorite fish attractors. Find MO Fish is available as a free download on the Google Play Store and Apple iStore. Multiple iOS and Android smartphones and tablets are supported by the application. Download the application for iOS devices at http://tinyurl.com/ brma6ef, or Android devices at http://tinyurl. com/csxgglc. “MDC wanted to be able to use map data we already had available in this mobile application.” says MDC Information Management Manager, Kirk Keller. “Timmons Group worked with us to develop an application that dynamically pulls this map data as we update it. This approach allows us to efficiently use taxpayer dollars to provide mobile services to the public. This new technology is another way conservation makes Missouri a great place to fish.”

Fishin’ at Pomme de Terre Lake By Earle Hammond, Pomme Muskie Guide Service

This past year was a pretty good year at Pomme for fishing for any of our species. It did slow down some when the heat hit but if you went down deeper your chances of catching something really improved. Walleye – this great eating fish was hitting like mad up until the time the water temperature went over 80 degrees and the air temperature hit in the upper 90’s and lower 100’s. When you fish for these fish prior to the heat I would suggest using a deep running crankbait, drifting worms or minnows over the flats in about 17 feet of water. We have an excellent supply of these fish and they are very under fished. The Missouri Conservation Department stocks these fish in the lake to go along with the natural reproduction so we have quite a few walleye in the lake. Crappie – Pomme has an abundant supply of this fun and easy to catch fish. The yearly netting shows an abundant supply of 9-13 inchers. Just pull up to some trees and drop down your line and hang on, no action at that tree just move to another one until you find them. Can’t find them in the trees; try fishing over some of our hundreds of brush piles. Most of the brush piles are located in 21 feet of water and are usually surrounded by bait fish making catching crappie even easier. Bass – this great fun catching fish is in the lake in abundant numbers. We have a tremendous shad population and that just makes the bass keep on eating and getting caught by you. A lake biologist told me a few years ago we had the best lake in Missouri for bass. The amounts they were catching in their spring shocking were averaging 300 an hour. All of those weren’t 5-7 pounders but a staggering number were. Of course, catching them is not always easy, but knowing when and where to fish for them always helps. Bass are a very aggressive fish, so just keep putting your lure out there for them and they will hit it.

Catfish – a lot of people fish for catfish here at Pomme. I catch a lot of them trolling for walleye and crappie. Lots of people catch them by drifting the flats and shallow water in the summer. The depths that you fish will vary but if you put that dough bait or ball of worms out there you will have some action. White Bass – I am sorry to say that our white bass are still making a recovery from the die off we had about 3 years ago. This past fall I saw schools of whites hitting the shad on the surface and that is something we haven’t seen in the past few years. These whites are probably only about 6 -7 inches but they are growing in size and numbers. I hope they really come on….they are fun to catch when they are surfacing in late June and July - not too bad eating either. Muskie – Pomme de Terre is the premier muskie lake in the Midwest. We have a good supply of these toothy critters and they are here for the catching. Throw away most of the stuff that you know about catching them up north, this is a different story. Every year the Dept. of Conservation stocks at least 4,000 and every 6th year they put in approximately 9,000. You learn three things from muskie fishing – patience, perseverance and more patience. Some days you may not see a muskie, but there are times when you see a bunch. In September of 2012 my clients and I had 80 muskie encounters in a 6 day period. Not all of these fish were put in the boat - but the encounters includes follows, hook-ups and fish in the boat – but that is a tremendous number of encounters. This fish is really fun to fish for, so come on down to Pomme de Terre and try your luck. If you have any questions about fishing, please don’t hesitate to call me at 417-993-0035. If I can’t answer your question I will find someone who can and get back to you with the answer.
