THE PROBLEM WITH PRODIGIES (Re: FYI Mensa, Issue 198)
I enjoyed reading your article about Mensa. I have a son who did many of the things ascribed to the world’s smartest kids, and at similar ages.
I had him professionally tested at four years old (he’s turning eight now) and he scored 129/133/135 on three different tests. The professional recommended he go to a school where he’ll be challenged and stimulated even at his high IQ level.
Unfortunately, I could not find a single frum cheder geared for boys like this. Most schools accommodate kids who need extra help, but have nothing to offer gifted kids. My son is stuck in a regular school where she’s not gaining anything.
Chedarim do not understand these types of kids and it’s so hard to see him come home every day saying he’s bored in school because he didn’t learn anything new.
Does anyone know of a frum cheder, anywhere in the world, that is geared toward such children or that can accommodate them? I can be reached through The Monsey View.
Thanks,

DON’T MIX FAMILY
(Re: Power Tools, Issue 198)
Your weekly serial, Power Tools by Esty Heller, is the first thing I turn to each week.
I think its beauty lies in its simplicity: it’s just regular people like me and you navigating life and trying to do our best with whatever life throws at us.
The storyline made me reflect on the experience of mixing family and school. Growing up, I had two cousins in my class, and I have a close relative who had his father as his rebbi. Both of these circumstances brought a lot of anguish to the parties involved.
I believe that most kids function best if their “family life” and “school life” are kept separate. Since most schools have parallel classes, it should be simple to maintain this separation.
You can argue that some amazing friendships between family members (like cousins, or twins) grew because they were in school together. But I think those stories are few and far between. The opposite is more likely to occur.
Thank you for being a powerful voice of the community and letting my voice be heard.

Paint Party, Issue 197)
Thanks so much for the paint series. I’m loving every minute. As a mother of two, I finally found a mode of self-care and self-expression that’s within my budget and requires no babysitters!
Some questions: Is there any way to seal the painting so it lasts longer and looks nicer? How do I store it? What should I do with the edges (the sides) of the painting, should it be painted as a continuation of the scene, or a solid color?
With much gratitude,
CHAVA SCHWARTZ REPLIES:
J. WeissOnce the paintings are fully dry (at least 48 hours after painting), you may seal it with a gloss varnish for acrylic paint. Make sure to cover the entire surface and the edges with the varnish.
Regarding the edges, you can choose to paint it as a continuation of the scene or a solid color. If you choose a solid color, I recommend putting painter’s tape on the dry painting, near the edge, to protect the painting.
With this well-developed and detailed guide, I undertook to bake round challahs for the first time. The directions were very practical, and I was so proud of my beautiful crownlike loaves! Every year since, during the Nine Days, I refer to that guide to help me braid my round challah.
I was very pleased when I saw that Goldie had written another article on challah this year. I was particularly happy that the recipe was for 7 lbs, since I was actively looking for one!
This recipe is a winner! The dough was pliable and easy to work with, and the final result was fluffy and delicious. I have clipped the article, and added it to my growing collection of stellar recipes by The Boro Park View
Thank you, and please convey my thanks to Goldie as well.

Ahuva F.ANOTHER WINNER (Re: A Challah Bake, Issue 194)
In September of 2019, you featured a brilliant tutorial on round-challah braiding techniques by Goldie Rosner.
I would like to bring a small issue to the attention of the community. Often, a driver (a taxi driver or spouse), will drop off their passenger in front of a store, doctor’s office, or other location, and then wait in the car until the person completes their errand and returns. During this time, the driver is parked in a prime parking spot, right in front of the store or office. That means that other people arriving at this location have to park further away. A mother who is arriving with many small children, an elderly person who finds walking difficult, or someone carrying heavy bags would all appreciate the convenience of being dropped off as close as possible to the entrance, just as the original passenger did (and this becomes even more important in bad weather). Please consider moving your car while you wait so that others can experience the same convenience that you did. Perhaps your passenger can call you when they are done and you can bring the car back to the entrance to pick them up. This small consideration is an act of ahavas Yisroel and chesed, and will make the day better for so many others.

PARSHAS KI SAVO
All the Good in the World
There is a well-known Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh on the pasuk , “V’samachta b’chol hatov asher nasan lecha Hashem Elokecha ” — You should rejoice in all the good Hashem has granted you (Devarim 26:11).
“Hatov ” refers to the Torah, as Chazal say, “Ein tov ela Torah ” — There is no good other than Torah ( Avos 6:3), and the Ohr Hachaim expounds: “Ki haTorah kolleles kol hatovos sheba’olam” — The Torah encompasses all good in this world.
If we were to realize how sweet and geshmak Torah is, we would not seek any other pleasures, we would simply pursue Torah with all our heart and soul. The joy we can derive from Torah learning is boundless.
EVERYONE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD knew Mutty. You could find him on the streets as early as 5 a.m. or as late as 12 a.m. There was always some sort of prank or mischief up this nine-year-old’s sleeve. His rebbe’im were at their wits’ end.
When it came time to find a yeshivah ketanah for Mutty, his parents wrung their hands in despair. His reputation preceded him, and no school would accept the unruly boy. His parents used all the influence they could muster and finally managed to get him into an out-of-town yeshivah.
Soon the people in the neighborhood forgot the boy who was always getting into trouble.
Several years passed. One day, Mutty’s name appeared in the local circular in the mazel tov column. Mutty was engaged! It was a beautiful shidduch. His mechutan was thrilled and told everyone he met about the special chasan. Every-
one was happy for Mutty — and also shocked. But the real surprise came when they heard that Mutty was planning to make a siyum on all of Shas at his wedding.
How could it be? everyone wondered. How did Mutty-themischief-maker turn into Mutty-the-masmid?
Reb Ahron, a community member who had known Mutty as a little boy, bumped into him at a chasunah. After wishing him a hearty mazel tov, Reb Ahron could not contain his curiosity and asked the question that was bothering all who had known him during his formative years. “Mutty,” he said, “we all know what you used to be… and today, we are all so proud of you. But maybe you could explain the transformation? What happened?”
It seemed that Mutty had been expecting the question.
He hesitated for a moment and replied, “It happened one evening after night seder, several years ago…
“I was in the beis medrash and I opened a Gemara, almost by mistake. I just wanted to look something up. Just then, my maggid shiur passed, and he thumped me on the back. ‘Mutty! I am so impressed! To sit after night seder and continue to learn… I haven’t seen too many bachurim like you!’
“I don’t know how, but the next day, I found myself sitting with my Gemara after night seder again. This time, it wasn’t a mistake. I decided to prepare the sugya we would be learning in this maggid shiur’s class the next day.
“Several nights passed this way. In the mornings, I didn’t fail to notice the approving glances of the maggid shiur. He gave me a sense of recognition and admiration.
“In my life, no one had ever been impressed by me like that,” Mutty exclaimed. His joy was apparent even now, years later.
He continued, “One morning during shiur, I asked a question. The maggid shiur got excited, ‘That is the question the Pnei Yehoshua asks!’ My friends turned their heads in my direction, obviously impressed. That afternoon, one of the top bachurim asked to be my chavrusa.
“I sensed a feeling I had never felt before. I suddenly loved the Gemara. My maggid shiur and my peers valued me, and that enabled me to value my learning. Sitting in the beis medrash, I didn’t feel the long hours pass — learning simply became pleasant. Automatically, the lunchroom and the stores and the street grew less attractive. I was happy where I was.”
Mutty paused. “You are right,” he said. “It is amazing that I am where I am today!”
Reb Ahron was blown away. Mutty was a living example of how the approval and warmth of one person has the ability to thaw even the most frozen of hearts. The maggid shiur had exposed the sweetness of Torah to his talmid, and opened a world of spiritual pleasure. Mutty was granted a gift — the gift of tasting the mesikus haTorah!
The words of the Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh ring in our ears. Ki haTorah kolleles kol hatovos sheba’olam. Torah encompasses all good things in this world. It is our sweetest and most precious treasure.
The yetzer hara is aware of the immense value of learning and a Torah life, and surrounds us with all sorts of distractions to deflect the natural geshmak and pleasure of Torah. The temporary pleasures of this world conceal the Torah’s brilliance, like a buried diamond. Yet if we displace the dust to expose our gem, the Torah will shine bright, and we will revel in its sparkle.
No school would accept the unruly boy, and his parents used all the influence they could muster and finally got him accepted into an out-of-town yeshiva

A breakfast that’s quick and easy, doesn’t make a mess and tastes delicious definitely qualifies as a winner. Meant to Be’s Greek and drinkable yogurts do all that, plus way more. These yogurts are nourishing, vitality-inducing, and make you feel great as you start your day.
Sounds like a dream? That’s because it started as one… until Meant to Be made it come true.
MILK FOR ALL IT’S WORTH
Milk products like yogurt are only as good as the milk they’re made from, so Meant to Be went on a search for the ultimate quality milk. And their definition of what the ultimate is in milk quality sets the bar way higher than you’d imagine.
We know milk as a highly nutritious food with lots of goodfor-you vitamins. Mothers have been telling children for generations to drink up their cup of milk. “It will make your bones strong, and keep your teeth white!”
But despite milk’s reputation as a health-supporting drink, you surely know many people who, although not quite allergic, have a hard time tolerating conventional milk. They can’t digest dairy properly.
And although we know milk to be naturally full of nutrients, a lot of conventional milk is artificially fortified with vitamins. Adding vitamins to a nutrient-dense drink sounds counterintuitive. Where are all its natural vitamins?
For milk to fulfill all its promises of health and strength, the milk has to come from the right kind of cows, who have the healthiest diet.
MEANT TO BE’S MILKY WAY
Let’s head out to the farm and visit the cows who give us milk. Are you picturing a large 1,000-pound milk cow peacefully chewing green grass in a field?
That’s a great picture to have, because the healthiest, creamiest milk comes from just
such cows. Being allowed out on pasture all day keeps cows healthy, and their milk is of the highest quality. This was the kind of milk Mr. Pal, founder of Meant to Be, wanted to find for his dairy products.
It wasn’t easy to find a farmer who would agree to keep his cows out on pasture all the time, and feed them only grass. But today, all of Meant to Be’s milk and milk products come from cows with this high-quality lifestyle.
The farmers that provide milk to Meant to Be make sure to plant only top-quality grass. They also keep moving the cows to new pastures, which lets the cows eat the highest, softest
part of the grass stalk. That young green grass tip gives cows the most energy, which gets passed into their milk.
Cows that are out on pasture and graze in such fields give milk that contains omega-3s, important vitamins, and healthy linoleic acid. Vitamins D3 and K2 are especially important, because without these vitamins, calcium can’t be absorbed properly. Pasture-grazed cows give milk that has both of these vitamins naturally.
MILK WITH MUCH MORE
All this wasn’t enough to qualify as the ultimate in cow’s milk for Mr. Pal. There are more aspects to cow’s milk which can make it healthier, and he wanted to incorporate the benefits of all of them.
He didn’t want to just focus on one type of health benefit, like many organic milks do. When Mr. Pal visited organic farms, he saw that they were indeed organic, which is defined as chemical-free. They didn’t focus on pasture-fed or grazing, though.
Aside from having organic milk, Mr. Pal also wanted to focus on two of the main differences in cows that give milk: The cow breed (what type of cow they are) and the gene composition.
Most conventional milk comes from Holstein cows, who are known for giving a lot of milk at a time. Their milk, though, is mostly

water, with much less of the fatty cream that makes milk healthy and delicious. Jersey cows, on the other hand, provide extremely rich and creamy milk. This gives it a much higher concentration of vitamins and much higher levels of calcium, which strengthens the teeth and bones.
The two most common mutations of the beta casein (a major protein component of milk) present in milk cows are A1 or A2. Those cows with the A2 genes produce milk without harmful caseins, or milk proteins. The lack of harmful proteins makes it much easier for people to digest. Of course, Meant to Be’s milk comes exclusively from cows with the A2 gene.
Children and adults who drink Meant to Be’s milk find that they have whiter teeth and fewer cavities, as they absorb so much calcium from the milk. The nutrient-dense milk also provides energy, and those who drink it feel the boost of vitality it gives. After all, milk is known as the healthy drink that can strengthen your teeth and bones. When it’s such a natural milk, the promises do come true.
THE YOGURT JOURNEY STARTS
Once Meant to Be was producing and selling top-quality milk, Mr. Pal turned his attention to milk products. Creating delicious dairy items out of Meant to Be milk
meant taking all the health benefits of the milk and making it into a meal.
With all the added cream that comes from Jersey cows’ milk, the yogurt that Meant to Be produced from their milk had an incredibly smooth texture. It was a rich, healthy yogurt full of probiotics, free of any stabilizers, preservatives, thickeners and artificial flavorings. The flavor was already
STEP 1: SWEETENING THE DEAL
First, the yogurts needed to be sweetened. But any sugar added to yogurt made from Meant to Be’s rich and healthy milk had to meet its standards of health and taste.
For that, Meant to Be used one of the healthiest kinds of sweeteners: organic maple syrup. The syrup is taken directly from a chemical-free maple tree. A container is inserted into the maple tree to withdraw the sap, and this pure tree sap is the maple syrup used as a sweetener.
Maple syrup contains antioxidants and many good-for-you nutrients. It’s a sweetener that ranks high in health benefits and creates a delicate sweetness.
STEP 3: A MELANGE OF FLAVORS
incomparable to conventional yogurts, which have a dry taste from the preservatives. This had an original yogurt flavor, with nothing there to ruin it.
But to make the yogurt truly tantalizing, Mr. Pal wanted to create many yogurt flavors. Years of effort were invested to create Meant to Be’s yogurt options, because once again, only the highest-quality ingredients were used.
STEP 2: FLAVOR DOESN’T GROW ON TREES
Once the yogurts were sweet, working on the yogurt flavor was the next step. Meant to Be created the popular option of vanilla-flavored yogurt, but they didn’t take the standard route. Using extracts and vanilla flavorings wasn’t good enough. Mr. Pal would only use the actual organic vanilla bean, despite the astronomical cost: One pound of vanilla costs $500!
Mr. Pal wasn’t sure if it was worthwhile to go to fruit flavors next, because he knew that in order for fruit to naturally add flavor, there would need to be a huge concentration of fruit. Until a product is half-fruit, it won’t have the fruity taste. Conventional fruit-flavored yogurts don’t actually get their flavor from fruit. They might add some fruit pieces, but the fruit flavor in conventional yogurts comes from artificial flavorings.
Mr. Pal wasn’t going to use flavoring, but he wasn’t either looking to turn the yogurts into fruit smoothies. All he wanted was to add the natural delicious flavor of fruit to the yogurt.
Mr. Pal invested six months of trial and error to try to figure out how to use organic fruit to flavor his yogurts. Finally, after many attempts that almost made him give up on fruit-flavored yogurt, he discovered the ingredient that brings out the taste of the fruit strongly enough to create a flavored yogurt.
This secret ingredient is as natural as all the other ingredients in Meant to Be’s yogurts, a deceptively simple ingredient in every person’s pantry that ended up making all the difference.
The first type of fruit flavor that Meant to Be tried to create was strawberry yogurt, the traditional favorite.
When it came to strawberries, there were additional high standards to keep. Strawberries are notoriously infested with insects. Meant to Be products have the NSK hechsher, certifying their products as having the highest standards of kashrus. To use strawberries in Meant to Be yogurts, they would have to be absolutely bug-free.
This was a hurdle, but Meant to Be managed to overcome it, sourcing organic strawberries yet ensuring that they were completely insect-free. Once the NSK had approved the strawberries, Mr. Pal was able to create the strawberry-flavored yogurt that everyone loves.
Meant to Be did the same for their Mixed Berry flavor, created out of real organic blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries. And for coffee lovers, they decided to make the Dandelion flavor, which has a similar flavor to coffee. Actual coffee doesn’t allow calcium to be absorbed properly. Dandelion mimics the flavor of coffee without that negative effect.
All these flavors were made into a thick, creamy Greek yogurt. This yogurt made for a complete, nutritious meal that was velvety and luscious like ice cream. It provides delicious flavor to satisfy a morning appetite, while giving a power boost to start the day.
THE DRINKABLE DREAM
Mr. Pal is always looking to improve, so aside from the Greek yogurt, he came up with a drinkable yogurt as well, slightly sweeter and more kidfriendly. But even more than that, this yogurt is easily portable.
When you’re in the middle of the morning rush that backto-school routine brings, even finding a spoon to eat your yogurt with takes too much time. Not to mention the mornings that breakfast is an on-the-go affair, where whatever can be taken along and consumed on the bus or in the car is the breakfast of choice.
Often, those last-minute grab-and-go choices aren’t that healthy, nor do they satisfy you completely. Imagine being able to drink down a complete meal in a couple of seconds, a meal that gives you long-lasting vital ity. Instead of the artificial high that sends you crashing in a couple of hours, you get real sus tained energy. Picture sending along a nutritious breakfast with your children and knowing you’ve helped them put their best foot forward.
Keeping
Meant to Be’s Greek and drinkable yo
gurts on hand means knowing that you and your kids can always have a nourishing breakfast, no matter what’s going on. When you eat or drink a Meant to Be yogurt, you’ll have energy for whatever your day might throw at you.
That’s what Meant to Be’s drinkable yogurts offer you: A unique taste experience that you can have anywhere, packed full of all the good things you need to start your day. So next time you’re looking for the ultimate breakfast, grab a Meant to Be drinkable yogurt, and drink to your health.

Rockland County Exec Slams Adams for Creating New York’s Migrant Crisis
In a scathing letter to Governor Kathy Hochul, Rockland County Executive Ed Day blasted New York City Mayor Eric Adams for failing to take proper steps to manage the steady influx of migrants into the five boroughs.
Day wrote the August 25 letter in response to correspondence and a court filing that were sent to Hochul, demanding that New York City be allowed to offload newcomers to other locales in the state. Day noted that emergency orders enacted by 38 of New York’s counties and three individual towns to keep migrants out were motivated not by bigotry, but rather a lack of infrastructure to absorb the new arrivals.
Day cited data showing that New York City has enough vacant supportive housing for the homeless to hold 15,000 people, and noted that the amount of time it takes to fill public housing apartments has nearly doubled since Adams took office in January 2022. He also noted that New York City has lost approximately 500,000 residents since the start of the pandemic and has over 20,000 unoccupied hotel rooms, making it clear that “New York City is not at-capacity nor in crisis but rather under poor management.”
“I also urge you to demand that Mayor Eric Adams act like a leader and take responsibility for the municipality he swore to serve rather than foist his issues onto others,” wrote Day. “The humanitarian crisis he speaks of is one of his own making and the
‘strategy’ in play will only encourage and compound the situation.”
Day also called on Hochul to petition federal lawmakers and President Joe Biden to fix the immigration problem once and for all.
“No amount of money nor space will solve this issue,” wrote Day. “Failure to do so will predictably continue to exacerbate the situation.”
Hatzolah Ambulance Gets Permanent Home on 21st Avenue
Residents of southwestern Boro Park will see quicker response times when they call Hatzolah, with the purchase of a new garage placing a dedicated ambulance in the heart of the growing area.
Bus B909 had been stationed in the National Wholesale Liquidators parking lot at Bay Parkway and 59th Street for well over ten years, but being in a public area and exposed to the elements was far from ideal. The purchase of the 21st Avenue garage, located between 64th and 65th streets, will allow thorough coverage of both Boro Park and Bensonhurst.
Hatzolah of Boro Park purchased the garage on 21st Avenue between 64th and 65th streets approximately two months ago. In addition to the new location providing better coverage for both Boro Park and Bensonhurst residents, housing B909 in a

After Nearly a Century, Wallachs Makes its Way Into the History Books
The landscape of 13th Avenue is about to be forever changed, with a landmark store closing its doors in the coming weeks.
Wallachs, which has been selling clothing for men and boys since 1924, was the longest running business in Boro Park. Large signs plastered in the store’s windows thanked the local community for its patronage over the past 99 years. Wallach grandson Gary Blond told The Boro Park View that he plans to retire once he closes the store shortly before Rosh Hashanah. The building, which is located between 41st and 43nd streets, is being sold to new owners.
It is unclear if the Wallachs’ website will continue operations. Currently, all website orders can only be completed by calling the store.
One Year In, Thruway Crackdown on Delinquent Drivers Nets $4.5 Million
A relatively recent push by the New York State Thruway Authority to hold violators accountable for their actions is producing serious results, with $4.5 million in unpaid fines collected and 1,640 registrations suspended over the past thirteen months.
The Thruway Authority, which counts on user fees to fund its budget, froze all fines and suspensions in 2018 after numerous problems were reported with its newly implemented cashless tolling system. According to The Journal News, the agency was prepared to resume its collections and potentially start suspending drivers with unpaid violations in 2020, but put those plans on hold when the pandemic hit in 2020.
The Thruway Authority ended its grace period in July 2022, with 325,000 drivers receiving notices warning them that failure to pay their overdue fines would result in their registrations being suspended, even offering discounts in order to sweeten the deal. Ninety-one percent of those drivers had outstanding balances that totaled less than $1,000, while most of those owning $10,000 or more were commercial business owners, with the exception of some individuals who owed the Thruway Authority more than $100,000 each.
As of this past May, the agency had collected approximately $2.6 million from delinquent drivers, with nearly $2 million more in outstanding fines collected since that time. The Thruway Authority is continuing its push to enroll drivers in E-ZPass, which would have toll monies flowing straight into its coffers.
Even as it continues to chase after monies owed by toll evaders, the Thruway Authority is also in the midst of plans to have law-abiding drivers dig deeper into their wallets as well. The agency is seeking 5% toll hikes in 2024 and again in 2027, in addition to 50 cent annual increases each year over the next four years on the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.
CHAPTER 21
Riva confronts Lani about Chevi bullying Fraidy. Lani shares her concerns about the fight with Chaim Tzvi, who is clearly distracted.
It was pin-drop silent in the office. All Kleenup employees were fully absorbed in their work, or at least prudently giving off that impression.
A message popped up on Riva’s screen.
Shuli: Can I have your sister’s number, please?
Riva: My sister?
Shuli: The one who does those breakfasts.
Riva: I only have one sister…
Riva sent her Lani’s cell number, and then, propelled by curiosity, asked, Riva: What do you want from her?
Shuli: An order. What else?
Riva: Oh. Sure. K, good luck.
“Mrs. Stroh?” Mr. G’s voice punctured the stillness in the office. “What are you doing now?”
Riva hurriedly collapsed her messages. Her heart pumped wildly and
she clutched her mouse to contain her panic. He couldn’t have seen her sending messages, he was sitting at the other end of the room. What did he want ?
Was he really interested in what she was doing now, as in now—now? Well, what she was actually doing now—now was hyperventilating, and wondering for the millionth time if her computer activity was closely monitored, and if it was, was it considered a crime to answer a coworker’s message. She hoped her voice didn’t betray her as she answered, “I’m working on Guttman’s account.”
“Okay, good.”
Was that all? Had he been waiting to hear that she was working on Guttman’s account, or had he simply wanted to check on her to see if she was working at all?
She flicked the scroll wheel on her
Letter filled with warmth
“Challenge” is a word that people aren’t usually so happy to hear, It often comes together with feelings of anger and fear. But these people sometimes miss the point, It’s really a gift!
As we learnt from Moishy In Mrs. Honig’s class. All it takes is perseverance and acceptance to pass. She taught us how to “cope with it instead of fight”. And then we could reach tremendous heights.
May ה ” בקה grant us all אימשד התעייס and חכ you’ll see, And He should help us to be the best person we could be! Don’t forget-smooth seas don’t make skillful sailors!

mouse up and down. She should’ve been used to this by now. And maybe she was used to it, which was probably a worse reality. She was used to sitting with her shoulder blades stiff and alert, she was used to breathing sparse, shallow breaths, constantly waiting for the next trick question to sneak up on her, for the next barb to come hurtling her way.
Like every time her boss accosted her, she told herself to let it slide over her, to disengage, not to overthink his behavior. She had to wear a Teflon coating, or else she would wither away.
But now, as she tried turning her attention back to Guttman’s account, her mind reeled with the image of Fraidy sitting at another desk, in a building several blocks away. She pictured her daughter cowering in her seat, not trusting herself to look right or left, bracing for the next verbal bullet.
Maybe Riva was used to it, but Fraidy wasn’t. And she should never become used to it, Riva silently prayed. Nobody should ever get used to such… malice.
To her surprise, another message from Shuli popped up. Weird, Shuli never sent her a message unless she had an important work-related question.
Shuli: I’m sorry about that. It was my fault.
Riva: You didn’t do anything wrong, and neither did I.
Shuli: Whatever.
Shuli: Thanks for the number. My mother arranges meals for kimpeturins, and this volunteer canceled breakfast at the last minute, so I told her to order from your sister instead.
Riva: I didn’t know your mother does that. That’s so nice!
Shuli: Yeah. She actually runs a little organization. She organizes help for kimpeturins, mainly with food — she could easily arrange five to ten breakfasts on a regular day — and then she also has her small little network of volunteers, mother’s helpers and such stuff.
The thing about writing a message, is that it doesn’t come along with facial expressions or tone of voice. Riva couldn’t decide if this was Shuli be-
ing her regular stuck-up self, bragging about her mother’s saintliness, or if it was a different Shuli, a friendlier version, who was warming up to the idea of making friends. Riva preferred to believe the latter.
Riva: Beautiful! That’s really—
A flash of fear swept over her. She raised her eyes in her boss’s direction, but he wasn’t looking her way. Breathing cautiously, she turned back to her screen. That’s a really huge mitzvah, such an important cause…
Then a thought occurred to her. She continued typing. Hey, I have an idea…
It was probably farfetched, but if
LIKE EVERY TIME HER BOSS ACCOSTED HER, SHE TOLD HERSELF TO LET IT SLIDE OVER HER, TO DISENGAGE, NOT TO OVERTHINK HIS BEHAVIOR. SHE HAD TO WEAR A TEFLON COATING, OR ELSE SHE WOULD WITHER AWAY
they could make this work... A bunch of little pieces shifted in her mind, falling neatly into place.
If they could make it work, it would be… just wow.
Riva’s fingers pecked gingerly on her keyboard: Maybe your mother could officially offer these gourmet breakfasts from my sister. It would require some fundraising — does she do that? — but it would be really incredible. Kimpeturins get sooooo excited when they get Lani’s breakfast packages. Her food is delicious, and she does a gorgeous presentation.
Shuli: Maybe! I can definitely run it by my mother.
Riva saw the words Shuli is typing, but then the words disappeared. She looked up at her and caught Shuli’s warning look.
Keeping her face as even as possible, Riva frantically exited her messages. A second later, Mr. Gabioff was standing between their desks.
“Miss Nieder,” he growled.
Shuli’s face bore a twinge of guilt as she answered, “Yes?”
“Are you extremely busy now or can I sit down here to review a few things?”
“Uh, sure,” she stammered. “I’m available.”
“Good, good.”
He reached for the folding chair that was leaning against the wall near the water cooler and clicked it open. He sat down with an air of a courtroom judge.
Sitting a mere few feet away, Riva could hear every word he said. “Basically,” he began, “we need to review the system we established when you started working here.” He paused, one of his infamous, elongated pauses. Then he said, unnervingly slowly, “Every manager needs a manager, you know.”
He laughed, a cold, brittle laugh. Then he treated Shuli Nieder to her very first elaborate dressing down.
It was swift and sharp, filled with more pauses than words, and he left the office as soon as he was done.
The first minute after the office door clicked shut, a stunned silence filled the
room. Then Riva rolled her chair away from her desk.
“Whoa, Shuli,” she said. “That was tough. Awful. I know exactly what that’s like… I’m sorry…”
It took Shuli a moment before she hesitantly made eye contact. When she did, her eyes glistened, and for the first time since Riva had met her, her impressively straight back was stooped.
When your acquaintance comes under attack by your own persecutor, it’s impossible for her to remain a mere acquaintance.
At that moment, Riva knew they were now friends. * * * * *
The grocery had delivered wilted lettuce.
My fault, Lani admitted to herself. Phone orders were never a good idea, something was always bound to go wrong.
Okay, no choice. She had her one measly breakfast order to send out the next morning, and that meant she had to run over to the grocery herself to pick
RIVA FELT GUILTY ABOUT THE
up a fresh bag. If she asked Chaim Tzvi he’d probably say, “Sure, I’ll pick up a bag for you on my way home,” but since she knew how unpredictable that promise would be — if he got an important call on his way home from an important meeting, the last thing he’d remember was non-important lettuce — she didn’t bother.
Lazy to get dressed, she pulled a jacket over her housetop. She debated pulling on a sheitel, then decided she had no patience. She was doing this quick; she’d go in a snood, too bad. With Shifra strapped into her stroller, she hurried out.
The weather was a dream. Really, she should slow her steps and do some mindful walking, take a longer, roundabout route and fill her lungs with fresh air, but there was just no time. There was a mountain of laundry waiting for her at home that had to get folded before the kids returned from school, or else the entire afternoon would unravel.
Her cellphone rang as she walked into the store. She didn’t recognize the number.
“Hello?”
“Hi, my name is Devorah Nieder, my daughter Shuli gave me your number?”
Great, now she didn’t know two people.
“Okay, how can I help you?”
“I wanted to know if I can order a breakfast for a kimpeturin, for tomorrow morning.”
“Yes, sure. Do you want my standard package or something custom?”
“Standard is fine. Thank you so much.”
Lani found a pen and a tissue in her bag and took down the address and credit card information. Before hanging up, she did what she always did, even if it always felt uncomfortable. “Can I ask how you — I mean, your daughter — heard about me?”
“I think my daughter said that your sister works with her? Makes sense?”
Riva.
“Uh, yes. Makes sense. Okay, thanks. I’ll make sure it’s delivered by 9:30, then. Thanks again.”
Well, what did you know? Her new saleswoman, going strong.
She knew she should be grateful to her sister — she’d brought her a sale, after all — but as she picked out additional ingredients for this new order, she couldn’t help the stab of irritation that overshadowed her appreciation. If Riva felt guilty about the Eisdorf’s construction crisis, she should apologize and Lani would courteously accept. Offering little candies to placate her wasn’t going to cut it.
Lani sandwiched the bags of vegetables in the hood of the stroller and headed over to checkout.
“Hey, hello, how are you, Lani?”
No way, not Gittel Indig, not now.
“Hi, Gittel,” Lani said tiredly.
“Hi, hi, hi…” Gittel sang slowly. She squinted, her eyes traveling from Lani’s snood down to her sock shoes back up to her pale face, and Lani immediately regretted not taking the extra minute to dab on some makeup and put on a sheitel.
“You look stressed out,” Gittel said. Her finesse was a brand of its own. “I guess construction does that to you… whether it’s underway or whether it’s on hold.”
She giggled, as though she’d just said something brilliantly funny. Lani held the hood of her stroller to keep the vegetables from falling. Her lips were stretched in a flat line.
“So I spoke to your sister Riva about it, I told her that Rav Kleinman could help. Did she tell you about it?”
A container of cherry tomatoes wriggled out of place in the stroller’s hood and fell to the ground. Red balls scattered over the floor, and Lani quickly bent down to collect them.
“Oh my!” Gittel cried. “Here, let me help you.”
She bent down next to Lani and swept a bunch of tomatoes into her hands.
“It’s okay, Gittel,” Lani said icily. She held the plastic container close to her chest protectively. “Please, let me do this. I do not need your help.”

You know you’ve hit a milestone when your kids make you disappear as their buses pull up. Like, Mommy, I need you to do my homework and find my shoes and remind me what I forgot to tell you, but stepping out into the big wide world? I got this.
Well, here’s a secret, child of mine: You’re taking me with you. A piece of me will always hop along; it’s the part that pines and prays for your success.
All the more so on that first day of school. The day you wish you could fling yourself onto the bus alongside your kids and
bumpity-bump throughout the day with them, navigating the curves and dispensing timely pointers and making students and teachers alike love them to bits.
Whether you turn back to a workstation or kitchen counter as the bus disappears, you just wish your kids could really feel that you’re with them.
They can.
Here are some gems to sweeten, smooth and infuse this pivotal day with a piece of your heart, in ways that appeal to all five senses.
SEE? YOU’RE SPECIAL
Rise and shine! Who’s nervous today?
YOU HEAR? IT’S GONNA BE A-OK!
Check out
The Boro Park View’s Ready4School contest!
Imagine your child’s surprise as they behold in the mirror their own groggy face — plus a lovingly scribbled message from you! Glass markers are the coolest thing. They work on mirrors and windows, glass and ceramics, and wipe off clean with just a bit of Windex. Go all out with cheery, mushy or wacky messages — and be sure to add the hearts all around. Next sight for sore eyes: The kids’ clothing neatly prepped, down to the shoes and hair accessories. Backpacks parked like soldiers. Snacks on the counter in a line. There’s something so calming about order, it makes you feel like all is right in the world. A few minutes of tidying up at night is a gift in the morning.
A neighbor of mine who would babysit my kids taught me this by shining example. This woman juggled a group of babies and their messes all day, but when school was out she’d be flitting around the house, tidying up in a flash. “I like it when the house is neat when my kids walk in,” she said to me once, in passing. No, when I finish working I collapse on the couch, I’m done! or I work hard, my kids know that, let them help me. She knew that an organized home was a welcoming haven after a long school day.
This mother’s simple devotion moved me so much. I try to copy her when I can.
How about relaxing music to greet the day? Play something calming and gorgeous in the kitchen. Let the volume hit that sweet spot so that the notes fill the room but don’t compete with those who want to talk and be listened to. Great background music is like a hug, a magical provider of that delicious it’sgonna-be-okay feeling.
MMM, SMELL’S AMAZING IN HERE!
Here’s an ambitious project: Bake a babka! No, you’re not greeting your kids with a flour-fight. I’m talking the six-hour babka hack. If all stars align and you can prep a babka at night, stick it in the oven to rise for six hours and set the bake to begin at 5 or 6 a.m. Mmmmm! Imagine waking up to smell the babka!

When the request came in the middle of a school day asking me to do an article on school refusal, my five-year-old was not in school. He was sitting at my side. I’d love to say that he had a good reason for staying home, or that I had generously offered him a day off. But although I’m loath to admit it, here it is: in all honesty, I just couldn’t get him to go to school that day. It wasn’t the first time that year, and it turned out not to be the last. Thankfully, he usually did go to school. But getting him there each day was an enormous stress. As I interviewed therapists to learn about why kids refuse to go to school, and as I listened to stories of children who refused to go to school, I realized that I was listening to my own story too — and that although “school refusal” sounds like a dramatic and rare occurrence, it’s probably something that most parents will struggle with at least once in their parenting career.
What Is School Refusal?
School refusal is exactly what it sounds like: Children who refuse to go to school, or go but refuse to stay there. However, it doesn’t only describe the child who flat-out refuses to go to school and stays home for days on end. A kid who usually goes to school but consistently complains about it, seeks excuses to stay home, complains about physical ailments before a school day, procrastinates and stalls when getting ready for school, or has hard time getting out of the car to go into the school building, is also exhibiting classic school refusal. This behavior is harder to recognize than absolute refusal to attend school, and is often a gradual progression that can have parents gritting their teeth and tearing their hair out in frustration before they realize that something deeper than an uncooperative child is at play.
To those who haven’t experienced this firsthand, it sounds a little farfetched and new age-y. Why can’t you just get it together and get your kid to school on time? We went to school as kids, even if we didn’t like it. Teach your child that everybody has a job and his is school. There’s no such thing as a kid just deciding not to attend school. But to those who have lived through it, and have witnessed a child struggle with the very real distress of facing another school day, no further explanation is needed. They know that school refusal is real.
The Root Cause The Gigantic Bear
School refusal is technically a behavioral issue. Mothers and fathers have a set schedule, be it in or out of the house; kids go to school. Except when they don’t.
The first step is to identify why the child is shying away from school. To learn more, I reached out to Mrs. Ahuva Zargari, an LCSW in private practice and a school social worker, and Mrs. Aliza Katz, LCSW, RPT. Both maintain that school refusal is almost always a manifestation of underlying anxiety.
MY MAIN CONCERN IS IMMEDIATELY THE “WHY.” WHY IS THIS CHILD REFUSING TO GO TO SCHOOL? WHAT’S HOLDING THEM BACK?
—ALIZA KATZ, LCSW
It’s important to understand, explains Katz, that school refusal is not a disorder or diagnosis of its own. School refusal is a symptom, often associated with anxiety disorders, such as separation anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, PTSD, or depression. ”My main concern is immediately the ‘why.’ Why is this child refusing to go to school? What’s holding them back? If school elicits a fear response in a child, the child will try to stay away until we repair the situation and recreate a sense of safety in the school environment.”
A child with generalized anxiety tends to worry and dwell on whatifs.
What if something happens to my mother when I’m in school?
What if nobody’s home when I get off the bus?
What if I don’t know the answer and everybody laughs?
What if nobody plays with me at recess?
Children who tend to be natural thinkers and worriers, or have a hard time with separation or transitions, may face anxiety that manifests itself in a refusal to attend school.
Adults have the ability to rationalize their feelings and attribute feelings like anxiety or fear to specific causes. This is the groundwork necessary for addressing the root of their feelings. “Children, unlike adults,” explains Zargari, “do not have the language or emotional awareness to identify their fears. To a child who cannot pinpoint the source of his worry, anxiety can feel like a terrible and overwhelming sense of doom. Because he can’t verbalize this feeling, he can’t ask for or receive reassurance, and he’ll try to stay home where he feels safest.”
Parents naturally experience frustration when faced with a child who balks, stalls, procrastinates, or refuses to go. Throw into the mix a busy household, other children who need to be dropped off on time, parents who need to get to work on time, and a child who refuses to go to school basically destroys the intricate balance of the household. The tension around the situation is enormous.
But when school feels threatening or unsafe for a child, physically entering school becomes almost impossible for him. Parents need to understand that the child isn’t making an active choice to refuse school. “His sense of anxiety or discomfort around school can become so great that it is almost like a magnetic force field preventing him from attending school,” explains Katz. “To this child, going to school is like sitting in a room with a gigantic, salivating bear. The idea of going to school feels like life or death to him, and his body can have a physiological reaction to his fear, like vomiting, hyperventilating, dizziness or stomach aches. Giving him a sticker on a chart isn’t going to cut it.”
“When a child experiences anxiety,” concurs Zargari, “refusing school is not a manipulative behavior, and intervention and support should not be considered ‘giving in’ to poor behavior. The child’s fear is so real that attending school is truly not an option for him and we need to lower the anxiety level so that he can develop

coping strategies to help him get through a day of school.”
Often, anxiety around school is centered around a specific event, which can be school related or otherwise. “No two cases are identical,” asserts Katz. “It may be something

major or it may be something small, but school is where a child spends the majority of his waking hours. If he feels unable to go, it can be devastating.” The triggering event may be something going on at home that causes a child to feel unsafe when he leaves, or it may be school related, causing a child to avoid school.

What Should Parents Do?
Validate
Katz explains that the best way for parents to manage this situation is to convey compassion and understanding without any judgment. Even if the root cause seems ridiculous — and you are desperate for your child to just Go. To. School! Validate his emotions. Confirm that it’s hard to go to school when something is making you so upset. Your child knows that he should be in school. He understands that his refusal or reluctance to attend school is atypical and disappointing — both to himself and to you.
This brings us to what parents should avoid doing when a child is refusing school. Refrain from passing judgment or minimizing the child’s feelings, however petty they may seem to you. Do not compare the child to his siblings or friends who attend school without hesitation, or even to the way he himself used to go to school so nicely. Judgment and comparisons serve to create a sense of shame around the core issue, adding another layer to a difficult situation. Even worse, they may cause the child to retreat further, exacerbating the problem and moving further from a desired solution.
Model
A child with generalized anxiety probably never went to school all that nicely. He may have gone, but probably sadly, with a lot of foot-dragging, complaining, and procrastinating. “Young children don’t have the language and skills to understand and deal with their anxiety, and this is something you can provide for them,” explains Zargari. For young children, modeling and storytelling can help identify and assuage fears. Tell imaginary stories about other children who faced the same fears that they do. For her own daughter who had a hard time transitioning from a backyard camp to a large camp, Zargari used simple language to weave a story about a child who had a worry monster whose job was to get her to worry. The more she worried, the bigger the monster got. As the child in the story addressed her worries, the monster began to shrink away. There are many children’s books that use these concepts to help kids identify their feelings, or you can use your own stories to effectively model a healthy way of dealing with anxiety.
Investigate and Troubleshoot
When a child has been attending school happily but then at some point you realize that they aren’t, it’s time to find out why. If you don’t already know — just ask! Even a child as young as four years old may be able to identify what’s both-
ering him. The trigger may be something major, but it may also be something that seems minor to an adult but is major to this child.
What this may look like is an informal parent-child meeting with a relaxed and non-confrontational vibe. Tell your child that you notice that going to school is hard for him and ask him why. Often, a child has more insight than we give credit for.
Start with a simple question, “I noticed you don’t want to go to school… what’s up with that?” Allow time for the child to reflect and respond. If they have difficulty answering, offer a menu of options and suggestions until your child has that
lightbulb moment. Then ask detailed follow-up questions, making sure to maintain a curious and nonjudgmental tone. The key is collaboration — this is a problem to be approached and solved together.
Once the problem is identified, you can explore ways to fix it together, and create a strategic plan to enable the child to go to school. “I know this is hard for you. What can we do to make this more comfortable and doable for you?” Some ideas: A discussion with their teacher, some extra TLC from the principal, permission to call home during the day or to skip an activity that is a particular stressor, being allowed to come late to school, or an extra hall pass. For a younger child, communicate with the school and teacher to increase the cues of safety in his school environment.
As the child begins to feel more secure and confident, he begins to absorb safety cues naturally from his environment, and the parent or therapist can begin to slowly withdraw the extra supports until the child feels safe enough to function on his own.

Is School Refusal “Catchy”?
When dealing with the significant stress of a child who isn’t attending school or is barely making it out the door, it’s natural for stretched and stressed parents to worry: What if my other kids decide to play this game?
Zargari points out that anxiety can have a genetic component, so if other children begin to exhibit the same pattern of behavior, you need to determine whether it’s plain old-fashioned jealousy or actual anxiety at play. Once you’re sure that your other children just want the same special treatment as your school-refusing child, this is no different than any other case of “Its-not-fair!” Kids usually want what their siblings have, and as soon as parents start trying to even out the score in any area, warns Zargari, they are already in hot water.
Katz adds that because kids are naturally sensitive, they witness firsthand the very real and unenviable distress that their school-refusing sibling is experiencing. While siblings are therefore not likely to begin refusing school, she agrees that they are likely to want any special treatment that their sibling is receiving.
My own mantra is borrowed from Rebbetzin Spetner, and I’ve even heard my five-year-old quote it on occasion: “Different kids, different things, different times.” This is a greater conversation that every family needs to have at some point, and while my kids don’t like hearing it, the indefatigable optimist in me likes to believe they are capable of understanding it — or at least, that if I say it enough times, it will eventually sink in. Explain to your children that as parents, you try to meet the needs of each individual, and different individuals have different needs. Katz offers the following script: “I understand that you also want to go to school late like Chavi. This is what Chavi needs right now. Remember when you got your tonsils out and you got ice cream? That’s what you needed then, and this is what Chavi needs now. When you have a need, we do our best to meet it, too.”
DIFFERENT KIDS, DIFFERENT THINGS, DIFFERENT TIMES.
—REBBETZIN SIMA SPETNER
Teachers
For teachers, the instructions are clear: Act supportive and encouraging, but minimize attention. When a child has a problem going to school, it’s a very public issue and therefore naturally elicits a shame response, especially in older children. Asking questions, or even lavishing praise, calls attention and may serve to compound the issue. Be positive and encouraging — but be discreet. Leave a small note, rather than make a big fuss when your student finally comes to school. Try not to ask questions about where he was, and try not to dwell on what he has missed. Try to stay focused on the goal, which is gently reintegrating the student into the classroom and helping him feel safe there.
When to Call a
Professional
When is it time to call in the big guns? As with any issue, when something consistently interferes with daily function, it’s time to seek help. Katz typically gets calls when children have been mostly out of school for about two weeks, and she posits that this is an ideal time to investigate. “A therapist won’t necessarily tell you that your child needs therapy. They can meet with you for a consultation where they will assess your child’s unique situation. They can recommend strategies to try on your own, point you toward some helpful reading material, and advise that you check back with them if nothing changes. Sometimes, therapists suggest that they collaborate with the school directly to provide strategies and create a plan.” If the issue is persistent and unrelenting, a therapist can help your child address the core issues and eventually return to school.
Help Me
There are various modalities that may be helpful when treating a child for school refusal, and a therapist might use any one of them, or a combination.
PLAY THERAPY is a great choice for children, as it uses children’s natural language of play to identify what’s bothering them and address issues in a friendly and non-judgmental manner. In the words of famous play therapist Gary Landreth, “Toys are children’s words and play is their language.”
COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT) helps children understand how their behavior is impacted by their thoughts and feelings, and gives kids skills to change the cycle. This modality requires a mature level of cognitive ability for reasoning and reflection, which is difficult for younger children although it may be helpful for older children.
EMDR (Eye Movement and Desensitization Reprocessing) is extremely effective in identifying and treating the root of school refusal. EMDR helps a child reprocess memories of difficult experiences and reframe them in an adaptive way that no longer evokes negative beliefs or feelings like shame, fear, or anxiety. For some children, the focus is on a recent memory at school or on the bus, and for other children it is on memories from the past.
A competent therapist should have a solid reintegration plan, and aside from extreme cases, children will hopefully be back in school, at least partially, within just a couple of weeks.
TOYS ARE CHILDREN’S WORDS AND PLAY IS THEIR LANGUAGE.
—GARY LANDRETH, PLAY THERAPIST
It’s hot and sultry outside and I’m listening to crickets and fireworks as I type this in the school-free throes of summer. Not having to get my five-year-old out to school is as much a vacation for me as it is for him — maybe more.
I think back to the trajectory of my year with my recalcitrant child and the narrative seems different somehow. You know that feeling when the kids are finally, miraculously out and you can actually think a full thought without interruption? I waited for that moment each day. I tensed up when I saw the chances of it happening fade away. I felt totally incompetent that I just couldn’t get my child to school on time. I was patient, but only because I had no choice, because the slightest display of irritation on my part would set us back even further in the daily struggle to make it to school. I was generous with extra perks and offered special times with Mommy. We muddled through somehow, and while it wasn’t an epic or catastrophic failure, it was far from smooth sailing.
Because there was no major drama, and his difficulty going to school grew slowly, I didn’t fully recognize the extent of the issue until we were deep in it. While I understood that this was different than my other kids who like to complain about school, I didn’t fully relate to what my child was expressing. I understand now that this was less about me and more about him, and that with all the struggles that my children face, I need to be quicker to examine the reason behind the behavior. But never fear: I also remember how the summer slips by in the blink of an eye each year, and I know that as Labor Day rolls by, I’ll surely be granted a do-over.

Chani, aptly named Chana Bracha, my “charming blessing,” is the fourth of my five children. I’m a preschool teacher, so I’m very attuned to the inner workings of children and classrooms. But Chani’s story has taken me places I never thought I’d visit, and presented me with choices that I never thought I’d face.
Chani was a precocious, bright eyed and curious toddler. It was obvious to me and to everyone who knew her that she was unusually bright for her age. Perhaps even more striking was how emotionally attuned she was to others, even as a small child. People thought she was a gifted child.
But already in kindergarten it became obvious that Chani faced certain challenges in the class-
room. She was anxious, had difficulty following directions, and had some trouble with sensory integration. None of these issues are terribly alarming in a young child, and we gave her occupational therapy to help her. The next year, in pre-1A, she didn’t like going to school, but she absolutely adored her teacher, so she usually ended up going nicely. At the time, we thought it was typical separation anxiety, but in retrospect, that reluctance to attend school was our first warning sign.
In first grade, when she was expected to sit at a desk for longer periods, it became obvious that Chani’s sensory issues were related to a bigger issue. Chani clearly qualified for an ADHD diagnosis. At the end of the year, the school said that Chani could come back only if she was on medication to address the ADHD.
Some people respond really well to ADHD meds, which allow them to be their best selves. Unfortunately, it was hard to get Chani’s ADHD under control. Maybe because she also suffered from anxiety, Chani resisted medication and was hyper-sensitive to its side effects (which may have
For years, my daughter Chani simply refused to go to school.
been real or imagined). She complained of headaches from some medications, while others made her sleepy enough to fall asleep during class. It was clearly not working.
Somehow, we muddled through second and third grade. In fourth grade, Chani had a wonderful morning teacher and was happy to go to school, but then the teacher got engaged and left the school right after Sukkos. The new teacher didn’t understand Chani at all and didn’t know how to handle her. Because the other fourth grade teachers were also inexperienced, we couldn’t just switch her to another class. Chani was asked to come to school for English only.
For a child who wasn’t successful in school and already struggled just to show up, this was a bad move. Once she was missing half the day, Chani was even less interested in going to school. She was very hurt that the school thought she was unmanageable. She felt unwanted. She began coming late to English and would often not go at all. When an experienced teacher returned from maternity leave, Chani was invited to join her classroom, but the damage had been done. Chani felt different, and continued to try everything in her power to avoid going to school for the remainder of the year.
The situation was disastrous, but in fifth grade, the school tried a wonderful intervention. At their own cost, they hired a young woman to come to my house every day, bring Chani to school, and stay with her for the first hour of each day. While Chani’s attendance did improve somewhat with this intervention, it wasn’t a complete success. She continued to suffer from anxiety and ADHD that was poorly managed.
We tried so many things throughout those challenging years. We tried sending Chani to one therapist after another (two psychologists and a social worker), each time with renewed hope. They mainly worked with Chani, but also provided guidance to us and the school. We tried DBT and CBT, incentives, and charts. We saw a psychiatrist who tried to treat her anxiety with medication, but Chani was a highly emotional child, and her anxiety was pervasive and difficult to resolve. My husband and I went to a therapist who specialized in the Nurtured Heart Approach, and while I don’t necessarily agree with every aspect of the approach, this intervention helped us parent Chani — and all our children — from a positive and encouraging angle. The number one goal in parenting in general, and particularly with a child in crisis, is to maintain a strong relationship; nothing is worth sacrificing the relationship or your child’s self-esteem.
While I’ve shared the timeline and the hard facts, I haven’t really explained what this looked like at home. Chani’s anxiety and school refusal wreaked havoc on a typical family sched-
ule. Chani would consistently try to avoid going to school. I’m a teacher and I had to be at work at 8:45, regardless of whether Chani was in school that day or not. The stress level was enormous. The morning typically began with Chani alternately refusing to get out of bed, complaining of stomach aches, moving very slowly, and using other stalling tactics to avoid going to school. When 8:45 came, I had to leave the house. If I left and she was still home, I knew that any chance of her going to school that day was likely walking out the door along with me. I would go to work with a pit in my stomach, worrying about a vulnerable preteen spending aimless hours at home with just my mother keeping watch in the adjacent apartment and missing the vital social and academic benefits of school. If she did miraculously make it out before me, I would often get calls from the school about her disruptive behavior.
We literally tried everything. I thought that maybe her attendance would improve if I had more flexibility in the morning to make sure she went to school, so I switched to an afternoon job. In sixth grade, when Chani transitioned to a departmental program, I hired an Executive Functioning Coach to help her. That year, her morning teacher helped her taste success with modified requirements, and Chani actually enjoyed having various teachers for her English subjects. She still missed some school and had difficulty with homework

assignments, but she was no longer disruptive in class, and PTA was much more pleasant that year.
Then came COVID. When school reopened in September, Chani refused to go back. Her years of struggle made her terrified of being stuck again in the four walls of a classroom. She begged to be homeschooled instead.
I had serious reservations about this plan, but was advised to give it a try rather than force Chani to attend school against her will. I’ve never really been the homeschooling type of mother though, so my plan was to enroll her in a remote learning program. I would start her off in the mornings, go to my afternoon job, and finish up with her again in the evenings. It quickly became obvious that Chani couldn’t manage this on her own, and she got frustrated when working with me. We were lost and overwhelmed, and she missed out on even more schooling. (Today, I am aware of a Jewish program with oneon-one remote learning. It has been a wonderful resource to others whose children are temporarily out of school.)
For the past two years, Chani has attended a personalized learning school with individualized classes. For her learning needs, the one-on-one learning is a fantastic fit, and the teachers proved to be wonderful mentors. In this new setting, we tried addressing her ADHD medically once again, and finally saw a decrease in symptoms. It is possible that her being
happy and motivated in her environment allowed this success to come about. I have learned that keeping a child in a school that doesn’t fit their needs is detrimental in many ways. It is critical to find a solution that works for your child.
Our story is extreme, but I think the roots are universal. Kids refuse to go to school when their anxiety there is too great to overcome. As a parent, you need to uncover the cause of that anxiety and resolve it so that school can be a safe and welcoming place for your child.
Due to her success in her new school and her recovered self-esteem, Chani is now a confident and ambitious about-tobe tenth grader. When I look at her, I can see the bright eyed, emotionally sensitive, vivacious child she was years ago. We’re eternally grateful for the resting point we’ve reached, but we could never have anticipated the road that would lead us here. Baruch Hashem, our daughter, who spent years doing anything to keep herself out of school, wants to go back to “regular” school after this year.
Over the years, we tried so many things to help Chani. We poured thousands of dollars and countless hours into trying to get to the root of Chani’s issues — and she was only one of five children, each of whom had their own needs as well. Each intervention cost us so much — in emotional energy, money, and time — and none of them proved to be The Solution. In the moment, the disappointment and stress were enormous. But I firmly believe that everything we tried helped in some way. Each therapy that we tried, each effort that we made, was part of the process in some way and played a role in the eventual success that Chani is finally attaining. Some of these stepping stones helped our daughter. Some helped me personally, as I became a more compassionate and understanding parent and teacher, I’m sure some of them helped the school in dealing with our daughter and with other children who will fall under their care. I don’t believe that any of our efforts were wasted.
If your child refuses to go to school, I encourage you to keep trying to find a solution. I don’t believe that we would be where we are today without the various interventions that we tried over the years. And if your interventions don’t provide the full solution, don’t stop trying. Be flexible and creative; think out of the box. I would never have imagined the journey my child would need to take, but that was Hashem’s plan. Let go of the image you hoped for, and focus on what your child needs. Your job is to be your child’s advocate.
And for everybody else: Don’t judge. My child’s school attendance was erratic for years; the choices we made were definitely unusual. I’ve learned so much along the way, and while I would never have chosen to play this role, I’d like to believe I’m a better person for having lived it.
OUR STORY IS EXTREME. BUT I THINK THE ROOTS ARE UNIVERSAL. KIDS REFUSE TO GO TO SCHOOL WHEN THEIR ANXIETY THERE IS TOO GREAT TO OVERCOME

WHAT I LEARNED FROM STANDING IN THE HALLWAY
PUNISHMENTS THAT DIDN’T HURT
Punishments get a bad rap in our school system. Students long grown still remember their knees knocking against each other as they stood trembling at the door of the principal’s office. Some still feel the heat rise to their face when they recall being caught in a misdemeanor. They suffered the consequences — and the shame.
But a punishment (or, expressed in a way that’s more politically correct, a consequence) can be an effective tool of discipline when executed with its goal in mind: To teach a child to do better next time and to strive for positive behavior.
As school doors open across town, we spoke to several adults who experienced a childhood punishment in a way that stayed with them forever. Their experiences show how even something generally perceived as negative can be the catalyst for growth and understanding. Disciplinary experiences can be maximized in a way that comes across as both loving and effective. And it leaves our children feeling valued and cared about, even on a day when they didn’t perform as their best selves.
YOUR PAIN IS MY PAIN
I needed the recess break so badly. Sitting all those hours in school took a toll on me, and here I was losing even those precious fifteen minutes for being late to class one time too many in the very first term.
And now I had to stay in my seat for the duration of recess, writing, while the rest of my classmates would frolic about in the yard.
I tried to shrink into my seat and busy myself with my backpack as everyone filed out, hoping they wouldn’t notice.
Lifting my eyes as the hustle calmed down, I realized I wasn’t alone. My teacher had settled into her seat, and was deliberately removing a stack of papers from her briefcase to be graded.
“Eat something,” she said kindly, turning to me.
I looked at her shyly.
“I know how hard it is for you to miss recess, but I want you to learn not to be late to class. However, I cannot enjoy my break if I know you’re not having yours, so I’ll spend it with you in the classroom.”
Looking back, it was probably one of the nicest recess breaks I had in all of my years of school.
MAKING IT UP
It’s one thing to be punished for an offense, but a punishment for a crime not committed really hurts.
It was one of the days leading to Purim and the noshtick policy in our elementary school was strictly enforced — and each of us knew it. And still, one of my classmates, the one sitting right near me, brought in a confetti stick and planned to set it off as soon as the bell rang.
Many classmates egged her on. There would be no punishment for recess-time shtick, right?
Wrong.
The bell rang, and as if on cue, the girl tasked with the execution of the Purim fun shot the confetti into the air.
Startled, the teacher grew pale and looked around wildly for the source of the explosion. There was confetti all around my desk, and my face was flushed from the action around me.
“Miriam,” she said, pointing to me. “See me outside.”
My protests didn’t help. The teacher had made up her mind that I was the perpetrator and she would not be swayed.
I spent the rest of the day trying to defend myself, and some of my classmates tried to stick up for me, but since we weren’t willing to incriminate another girl, it didn’t help.
I was summoned to the principal and banned from the Purim program the next day — the one we had been awaiting all year.
While my classmates masqueraded and giggled and feasted on nosh, I moped at home, lamenting the unfairness. I felt not only unfairly blamed and punished, but also unheard.
The perpetrator owned up on that day, but it was too late for me. I had unfairly missed something that could not be made up to me.
On Purim, the busiest day of the year, I had a surprise visitor.
It was the principal, standing in front of our door, holding a wrapped bag in her extended hand — mishloach manos for me. Her smile was compassionate, remorseful and friendly.
A black and white cookie and a drink were nestled inside the bag with a note.
“Dear Miriam,” it read, “Purim is a day to be marbah rei’us. I hope we remain friends.”
And it was signed by the principal, whom I never ceased to respect since that day.
NOT THE WAY I VIEW YOU
The bathroom stall was my hideout. No way was I being seen pacing the halls by anyone, least of all the principal. I felt each of my fifteen years as I shamefacedly looked at the watch, willing it to move and mark the end of the period so I could pretend this embarrassing thing hadn’t happened to me. I had been sent out of class like a little child, and I was mortified.
Finally, by some miracle, the 40 minutes passed and I returned to class, trying to look nonchalant, as if I hadn’t spent the better part of the last hour, heart drumming, hiding in the bathroom, hoping to escape detection.
But the shame lingered, and I could not face the teacher for
the rest of the year, and the rest of my school years, for good measure. I was sure that she thought that I was the scum of the earth.
A few years rolled by, and I was excitedly showing off my new diamond bracelet to the friends and family who had come to celebrate my engagement. And then my mechutenesta approached, accompanied by… that teacher. I suddenly felt fifteen years old again as a flush crept up my face.
“Mazel tov! ” my teacher wished me warmly.
My soon-to-be mother-in-law beamed. “This is my niece,” she said. “She was the one who gave me glowing information and pushed me to go ahead with this shidduch.”
“Of course,” my teacher winked. “Welcome to the family!”
RIGHTING THE WRONG
Goodie two shoes, always toeing the line, I was not one to get punished.
But when it did happen, my world crumbled. It was the very first day of school, and I was caught at the door, still eating. Everything is taken more seriously on The First Day of School, and I soon found myself banned from class, told to wait outside until my new teacher would come to speak with me.
But she didn’t come. She must have forgotten all about me. It was a stressful day, after all.
I returned home in tears after a day spent in the hallway.
My year was over. I was shattered. I hadn’t even had the chance to prove myself as the conscientious student I prided myself to be, and here I had been banned from the classroom for the entire second half of English. I didn’t want to return to school, until my mother intervened and called the teacher, assuring me that the teacher felt terrible about the oversight.
The next day, I was summoned to the principal’s office during lunch time. That was a lot of drama for one little girl who’d never before crossed the line in any way. But there was my teacher, profusely apologizing for her mistake with humility and regret. She told me how bad she felt and asked if we could start again, a new chapter.
My year got a new lease, and that teacher became one of my favorites.
The next year, on the first day of school, that teacher was not there. It was the day she became a mother, she had a baby after several years of waiting.
And personally, I don’t think it was a coincidence.
NOT OUT OF ANGER
I was an impulsive ten-year-old who knew just how to get into trouble.
One night, determined to go all out and ruin my father’s attempts at getting the clan to bed, I was at my most active, tickling anyone who was thinking of sleeping, turning on lights, and making sure chaos reigned as long as I had a say.
The action must have wound down eventually, since I don’t remember much about the rest of the evening.
But I remember the next day.
My father came over to me after school and pulled me aside.
“I need to give you a potch because of your chutzpah last night,” he said. “I couldn’t give you one yesterday, because it would have been a potch given out of anger. Today I’m no longer angry, so I need to give you a potch for chinuch.”
He proceeded to strike me gently, a loving potch that left no mark on my hand, but one on my heart, forever.
I CARE ABOUT YOU
I had reached rock bottom, and now even the school authorities knew it. I was caught doing something terribly inappropriate, and as I trudged down the three flights to the principal’s office I knew that I was doomed. I was disgusted with myself and knew the principal was too. There was no way anyone would still want to look me in the face. And I knew that suspension from school would mean getting away lightly. I was afraid I was being expelled.
My body shrank into itself in shame. I knocked on the door, bracing myself to look the principal in the eye and inform her that she had no power over me, that nothing she would say would even scare me.
But her face was suffused with concern, and… could it be... love? She motioned me to come closer, and as I settled into the chair, the principal’s face crumpled and tears started sliding down her cheeks. She eyed me compassionately, tears rolling down her face, and then reached out her hands to grasp mine.
We sat like that together for several minutes, my frozen heart thawing and my own tears coming to the surface.
And without even having exchanged a word, she dismissed me.
It took downs and ups, dips and hard-earned patches of growth, for me to get out of the funk, but I never surrendered.
And I know that I owe the fact that I am raising a frum and healthy family today to those few minutes in the principal’s office.

COOL OFF
Remember the sweaty journey from school to home? Yes, buses packed with kids can generate a lot of heat. To combat this, the tops of school buses are often painted white, which reflects, rather than absorbs, light and solar radiation. One coat of white paint will keep a bus about 10 degrees cooler in the summer.
YELLOW MELLOW
Back in the day, students commuted to their schoolhouses in buses of assorted colors, in addition to farm trucks and even horse-drawn wagons. In 1939, representatives from across the country gathered to debate how to standardize buses so they would be recognizable in traffic.
With 50 color swatches on the wall, the debate ranged from lemon yellow to a deep orange-red. The winner was that distinctive yellow shade you know today, which is officially called National School Bus Glossy Yellow. But hey! Some officials keep raising the possibility of fluorescent lime green buses. Stay tuned!
THE BIGGER THE BETTER
A typical car weighs around 3,500 pounds. A bus is closer to 20,000 pounds. That’s equivalent to three African elephants! Even the driver’s steering wheel has to be oversized in order to function properly.
STAY SAFE
You can’t really miss the huge yellow bus with flashing lights. Even distracted drivers notice it!
Additionally, buttons have been added in the back of school buses to ensure no sleeping children are left behind. After the driver completes their route, they are required to walk to the back of the bus to push the button, thereby checking for any remaining passengers.
If a driver forgets to check the bus (and press the button), its horn starts honking. In some schools, the school administrators gets an email.
DON’T FASTEN YOUR SEATBELT
Actually, there’s no need to. It’s strange that a vehicle that promotes safety should lack seatbelts. But seatbelts are unnecessary because safety is built into the design of the bus. High seat backs, seat proximity and energy-absorbing foam in the seats absorb the impact from any collision.
LONG LIVE THE SCHOOL BUS
Let’s play school! Because school districts retire buses while they’re still in relatively good working order, people are eager to purchase them. New owners gut these reasonably priced, preowned buses, equip them with all they need to live on the road, and move into these yellow houses on wheels. This movement is called “skoolie” living.
BEAT THE TRAFFIC
BIG BUS, BIG NUMBERS
Over 427,000 school buses run daily throughout the United States. And every day, they transport more than 26 million students!
If your roads are clear in the morning, thank the school buses. If you’d take a count, each school bus eliminates over 30 cars from the road, enabling you to enjoy a quicker journey.
MEET BIG BERTHA
One of the largest school buses in the world is Big Bertha from Indiana. This bus is about 30 feet long and weighs 28,000 pounds. No students are transported with it.
BUS WEEK
Each year, School Bus Safety Week is observed in the United States and Canada. Its aim is to raise awareness about the importance of school bus safety.
THE UNSPOKEN RULE
Your kids have their special seat at the kitchen table. Why should the school bus be any different? Oddly, many students reportedly sit in the same seat every day. Even though the seats aren’t officially assigned, students develop attachments to specific spots.
