LIFESAVING DONATIONS BY COMMUNITY NURSERY

By Neil Wilson

P

lant sales by the Wallum Action Group’s Community Nursery in First Avenue at Bongaree have funded the recent purchase of four defibrillators and three of these have been donated to organisations in the local area. During a short ceremony on July 13th, representatives from the Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre, the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre and the Sandstone Point Community Association were presented with the lifesaving machines by Wallum Action Group President, John Ward, who informed those present that the fourth defibrillator

was to remain at the nursery so as to be available for any relevant emergency situation that might occur in the complex. Being able to fund the purchase of a defibrillator was originally the idea of local gardening enthusiast, Brian Cox, who now grows plants at home and the brings them to the nursery to be sold. John Ward told me that he hopes to be able to fund the purchase and donation of more defibrillators in the future. ‘As long as the public continue to buy the plants, we will have the funds that we need to help out community organisations,’

John said. As well as the purchase and donation of the defibrillators, the Wallum Action Group is also arranging to supply a diabetic pump to a local diabetic girl and provide support to the Dementia Group. The nursery staff are all volunteers and are proud to be able to donate their time and efforts to helping the community. Division One Councillor Brooke Savige attended the presentation and said that the Wallum Action Group were to be congratulated on

such a great project. “Whilst it is always wonderful to see the support that is given to community organisations, the donations of this potentially life saving equipment is the ultimate,’ said Councillor Savige. ‘It is a real credit to them,’ she added.

with some sort of phobia and where are more than a few known ones to choose from. In psychiatric terms, phobia is a word that is used to describe an irrational, abnormal, unwarranted and persistent fear or hatred of a particular thing or subject although specialists often prefer to use more descriptive terms such as personality disorder or anxiety disorder instead of the word phobia.

Opinions vary about what causes a phobia and also whether it can be successfully treated and, whilst there is ample evidence that phobias are normally developed during childhood and teenage years, some say that there

may be an evolutionary explanation due to ancient times when there was an ever present need to be aware of predators. The number of known phobias is incredibly large and it would seem that, if something exists, there will be someone who has developed a phobia about it. Some phobias such as Aerophobia (fear of flying) and Chemophobia (fear of chemicals) are easily identified by their name but others including Nomophobia or Koumpounophobia seem to have no significant relevance. In actual fact, Nomophobia describes the fear of being out of mobile phone contact whilst Koumpounophobia is the

Phobias are known to cause a variety of reactions and these include an immediate feeling of fear, worsening anxiety as the situation or object gets closer to you either in physical proximity or time and a range of other physical reactions such as sweating or shortness of breath. There are certain factors that may increase the risk of being affected by a specific phobia and some of these are your age (phobias often appear in children up to ten years of age), your personality and whether you have witnessed or been told about a negative experience. Apparently, most people can be helped with the correct therapy and this treatment

Certain phobias have been identified as being a great deal more prevalent than others and probably the most common of these is Ophidiophobia (fear of snakes) and this is where it gets personal for me, I am a classic example of an Ophidiophobic. I do not recall any specific event or reason which has brought about this extreme reaction to these slithering creatures but for as long as I can remember, I have been totally petrified of snakes. In fact, even as I write about the subject, my skin is tingling.

would make a jet pilot very envious. Something that I have never been able to understand is why someone would ever want to keep one of these horrible creatures as a pet when it’s main purpose in life seems to be to cause death. Yes, I know the old saying that snakes are more scared of humans than we are of them but, it would be just my luck to come face to face with a snake

that had never learned that golden rule for proper snake conduct. New research has found evidence that suggests humans have evolved an innate tendency to sense snakes and to learn to fear them so, if anyone would like a bit of motivation and a few tips on how to fine tune that skill, I am available to help. I am an expert.

BRIBIE ROTARY HONOURED WITH AWARDS

By Barry Clark- Rotary Public Relations

B

ribie Island Rotary has been awarded two impressive Trophies in recognition of outstanding achievements.

At this time each year more than 35,000 Rotary Clubs around the world appoint new Presidents and Boards of Directors for their Club. This annual process of changing leadership has been a key strategy in the 112 year history of Rotary International. Every year Rotary delivers amazing results through thousands of long and short term projects worldwide. The longest running global campaign of Rotary, initiated by Australia’s first International President back in 1985, is to rid the world of Polio. The End Polio campaign has raised and spent more than $1.7 billion over the last 32 years. More than TWO AND A HALF BILLION children have received the oral Polio vaccine. In a recent monthlong campaign in Pakistan 220 million children were immunised with a simple drop on the tongue. At the Rotary International Convention in America last month a further $1 billion was pledged by many Countries, large and small, as well as private and corporate business leaders, to finally eliminate the scourge of Polio from the world for ever in the next few years. Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop committed ongoing support of $18 million over two years for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have pledged to contribute $2 for every $1 raised by Rotary, up to a total of $450 million, over the next three years. This is an amazing personal commitment.

The World Association of Fundraising Professionals has recently recognised the Rotary Foundation as the world’s most outstanding Charity. A NEW TEAM for BRIBIE Bribie Island Rotary Change Over event was registered as a “World’s Greatest Meal”, being part of a global initiative to finally achieve a Polio free world. The guest speaker was the remarkable Susanne Rae, OAM. whose worldwide efforts to “End Polio Now” during her 24 years with Rotary, has personally raised $8.5 million for this important Global initiative. She now travels the world speaking at Conferences and Events raising awareness and commitment to total Polio eradication, and Bribie Island was honoured to have her as guest speaker. Bernice Wilson completed her second successful term as Bribie Rotary Club President, and has passed the baton to the new President Jeff Eustace. The past year saw Bribie Rotary launch another life-saving health initiative in PNG, vaccinating more than 28,000 young girls in remote highland villages against Cervical Cancer. Rotary projects deliver

lasting benefits to communities at a local, national and international level. Last year Bribie Rotary raised more than $65,000 for various school programs, youth exchange, development and training, International health & disaster relief, and donations to several local Clubs and Charities. As a result of these outstanding achievements Bribie Rotary Club has distinguished itself among 68 Clubs in this District, by receiving major Trophies for “Outstanding Services to Youth” and “Most Outstanding Club in District”. These are both significant honours and recognition for Bribie Island.

Bribie Club has hosted a 17 year old Rotary Exchange student for the past year, Jacob Wolters from Germany, who has just returned home from a very successful year. Jacob was hosted by 6 different local families during his year on Bribie, and distinguished himself both at school and in several different sporting endeavours. Bribie Simply Healthy

M

y name is Heenam Kim, I am an EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) therapist. I recently took over Bribie Simply Healthy, a health food store on Bribie Island. I am a versatile person and interested in many different things. I have a strong curiosity and I am a very enthusiastic person. My career ranges very wide from working at the Department of Foreign Affairs in the Republic of Korea, I worked for the Korean Embassy in the Republic of Ireland. I also worked for Korean Air as a ground clerk and I have a degree in Design and I have been working as a photographer too.

However, for around four years now I have been healing, so I have encountered many books regarding alternative healing. By observing people, I feel that I understand why people are sometimes ill. Emotional imbalances and stress are factors if not dealt with, they stay in our energy system and form trapped emotions and can cause illnesses. Dr. Bradley Nelson is a pioneer in this field, he calls it ‘Emotion Code’, after twentyfive years practising as a Chiropractor, he realised that most of his patients physical pain was often related to their trapped emotions. By neutralising and removing people’s emotional struggles the physical symptoms often disappear dramatically. EFT is form of ‘energy psychology’. The EFT technique can be used to treat a wide variety of physical and psychological disorders and as a simple form of self-administered therapy. EFT tapping/ stimulating acupuncture

points provide the basis for significant improvement in psychological problems.

Throughout our lives we experience hardship and emotional trauma, those emotional experiences are trapped in our subconscious level of our energy system, after many years they often cause various forms of health problems. ‘When people are in pain in western medicine, they give people drugs to suppress that pain. When people have diseases, we give the medication to suppress the symptoms of those diseases when in reality the symptoms are the body crying out, telling us there’s something wrong here.’ You are not one person, you are a community, there are 50 trillion cells living in your entity and your mind is the government for 50 trillion cells. So if you have a good government, you have good health, if not, then you can guess the consequences of that. I would say ‘your state of health is a representation of your emotions’. Human bodies are amazing, they can heal themselves and create any required chemicals available on earth. DNA cannot control on it’s own, our emotions and thought patterns direct the DNA movements. This phenomena is well documented and explained by professionals. EFT can help with chronic pain relief, unlike an injury resulting in acute pain, the pain persists even after the injury has healed. There are varied symptoms of chronic pain, and may include mild to severe sensations that do not dissipate pain that could be described as

electrical, aching, shooting, or burning and feelings of stiffness, soreness, tightness or discomfort. Often at times the pain does not present itself alone and is accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, anxiety, stress, depression, social withdrawal and sleeplessness. Dr. Bradley Nelson’s Emotion Code guide us to locate people’s trapped emotions and the EFT therapy lets us release emotional and physical symptoms that you have suffered for many years, such as physical pain and emotional disease like anxiety, nervousness,

depression and many other illnesses. Already many people are experiencing countless benefits from EFT therapy, if you are suffering from chronic pain and/or emotional issues please come and see Kim at Bribie Island’s health shop, Bribie Simply Healthy. Just opposite the post office at the Woolworth’s complex. We also have an experienced, friendly acupuncture and massage therapy available in store.

Emotional Freedom Technique is considered a major breakthrough in 21st Centry Healing Technology. By stimulating acupressure (energy points), it leads to physical and psychological relief. Emotion Code - Eemotionally-charged events often stay in your subconcious mind and can still be haunting you in the form of "trapped emotions”. Emotional energies literally inhabit your body and create pain, malfunction and eventual disease. Releasing trapped emotions often results in the sudden disappearance of physical problems and self-sabotage. Combining EFT and Emotion Code is an effective way to release your trapped emotions, and this will help you to ease any pain

The Long Tan Cross

O

n August 18th 1966, members of the 6th battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR) engaged a major concentration of 2,500 battle hardened Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers in what was to become one of the most savage and decisive battles in the history of Australian forces. The battle took place approximately four kilometres East of Nui Dat near the abandoned village of Long Tan and was in response to a Viet Cong attack on the Australian Operational base at Nui Dat that had occurred in the early hours of August 17th 1966. In response to the Viet Cong attack, B Company 6RAR was sent to patrol out frome the base which had only recently established in an attempt to locate the enemy firing positions and this task was achieved before D Company was ordered in to replace B Company at midday. After initially being confronted with a small enemy force, the troops eventually met with a much greater concentration of enemy just after 4pm and, in monsoonal rain, this small deployment of soldiers fought for their lives in what is known as the Battle of Long Tan. During this time, eighteen members of 6RAR sadly lost their lives and more than five hundred enemy were killed. On August 18th this year on what is known as Vietnam Veterans Day, local Vietnam Veterans will remember the fifty first anniversary of what was probably the most publicised battle of the Vietnam conflict when, after forming up at the Bongaree Sports Club at 3.5pm, they will march along Toorbul Street to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park where a service will commence at 4.20pm. Conducting the memorial service will be Chaplain Rev. Colin Baxter RANR (Ret) and Major General David Ferguson (Ret) will be the guest speaker for the afternoon. After the service the gathering will proceed to the Bribie RSL where they will enjoy a dinner.

EYES ON THE ROAD MORETON

By Senior Sergeant Garth Peake

T

he following information relates generally to road related enforcement operations and statistics reported for the Moreton Police District which includes statistics for Redcliffe, Deception Bay, Burpengary, Caboolture, Bribie Island, Woodford, Kilcoy and Moore Police Divisions. The statistics relate to the week ending on July 16. The information has been compiled by the Deception Bay Road Policing Unit.

Road Fatalities As of midnight on July 16, the Queensland road toll stands at 133 fatalities, seven more than the same time last year and an increase of three from last week. The Southern Police Region, of which Moreton is a

member, remains on 26, the same as last week. Moreton Police District also remains on seven fatalities for the year, two more than last year.

Operations/Enforcement/ Training Last week was a ‘Back to School’ week for Queensland and patrols state-wide were concentrated on school zones and nearby areas. It was pleasing to see that some of the major parking issues experienced last term are alleviating with most drivers thinking about where they are and where they should park. Although much better, there is a way to go with some still ignoring basic safety issues in and around our district schools.

Traffic Crashes There were 26 traffic crashes reported in the Moreton District, nine down on last week. Clearly, crash rates could be much lower if drivers took a little more care in matters such as following distances and lane changing. Due care, following too closely and unsafe lane changing were the feature issues for the week. Entertainers of the Island

By Neil Wilson

BRIBIE ISLAND COUNTRY MUSIC CLUB card,’ she said.

Kerrie told me that one of the current aims of the club is to encourage new talent and especially in younger age groups ‘We need the young ones to come along as they will be the future of the club,’ said Kerrie.

N

o matter what genre of music that the residents of the Bribie Island find the most appealing, they are always able to find a venue on the island where they can enjoy that style of music and, for those who prefer country music, the Bribie Island Country Music Club offers great entertainment. Founded in 1996 by Janice Brown who is now the driving force behind Country Links, the Country Music Club is held on the fourth Sunday of each month from 11am until 4pm in the recreation hall on First Avenue and has a regular band which plays throughout the day providing backing for the walk-ups who provide the majority of the songs during the event. Club President Peter Gibson told me that as well as local singers, there are always visitors from other clubs in the district who take to the stage to sing a melody or

two. ‘Each month we have a different guest artist who performs for about an hour at the end of the day after the walk-ups,’ said Peter. ‘We try to someone from the local area as the guest artist and it is always someone who is reasonably well known,’ he added. Peter, who by the way has just recently began singing on stage although he has been involved with the club for a while, explained that his main role is the administration side. Another performer who took to the stage for the very first time in June at the Country Music Club’s twenty first birthday celebration is the is Peter’s partner and club Welfare Officer, Kerrie Green. ‘As Welfare Officer try to keep track of special events in our member’s lives and send a little card,’ Kerrie told me. ‘Also, if I hear that someone is not well, I send a get well

Kerrie and Peter informed me that at the monthly events there is always an attendance of between 130 and 150 country music lovers and sometimes more. Apparently the size of the audience often depends on who the guest artist will be. For those who attend, there is food and drinks available to make sure that hunger doesn’t detract from their enjoyment of the day. To ensure that the Sunday event goes off without a hitch, a dedicated team of volunteers spend time on the day before setting up the sound system and chairs and of course, they then have to reverse the procedure when the day is over. Peter told me that doing all this takes quite a large team. As well as the volunteers who help out each time, the club is sponsored by Sunshine FM and local business, The Ink Shop.

The Bribie Island Country Music Club has a monthly meeting on the second Tuesday of each month and has practice sessions on the third and fourth Tuesday of the month. There is a very informative website www. bribieislandcmc.net which keeps everyone informed about future guest artists and other activities within the club. The club welcomes anyone who would like to join and offers assistance for those who would like to learn how to sing and eventually perform. THE STRONGER COMMUNITIES PROGRAMME IS NOW ACCEPTING EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST Our local community organisations play a crucial role in supporting local people. I know that fundraising to support these important services is a necessary, but often difficult task. That’s why I’m pleased to call for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the 2017 Stronger Communities Programme. Grants are available for up to 50% of total eligible small capital project costs, between $2500 and $20,000. This is an exciting opportunity, and I urge all eligible organisations to participate.

IS MY ORGANISATION ELIGIBLE?

To be eligible, your organisation must have an existing ABN, and be classed as a legal entity that falls into one of the following categories: • a not-for-profit organisation; • a local government agency or body; or • a trustee on behalf of a property trust with responsibility for a community asset.

HOW DO I APPLY?

If your organisation satisfies the eligibility requirements, you are encouraged to submit your EOI by COB 31 July 2017. Once received, your EOI will be reviewed by the Longman Community Consultation Committee. If successful, you will be invited to proceed to the application process. To review the full eligibility requirements and apply online visit:

SEARCH IS ON FOR MORETON BAY’S MOST FASHIONABLE RECYCLER!

By Neil Wilson

L

ights, camera, action! The search is on for Moreton Bay’s most fashionable recycler, as Moreton Bay Regional Council launches its ‘Regional Recycler Competition’ for 2017, with the theme ‘Rescued Funky Fashion’. With $4,000 in prize money up for grabs, schools and early learning centres (ELCs) across the region are being encouraged to tap into their inner Alex Perry or Coco Chanel, and create interesting and sustainable clothing and accessories fit for the runway, using discarded waste items from home and school. To enter, schools and ELCs will need to film a short 2-3 minute YouTube video, showcasing their quirky creations with a fashion parade and brief explanation, and submit their video entry online between 10 July and 6 October 2017: www. moretonbay.qld.gov.au/ regionalrecycler Council’s Waste Services Spokesperson, Cr Peter Flannery, said council’s annual Regional Recycler Competition was about getting kids thinking outside

the box when it came to recycling and reusing. “There’s plenty of ways kids can recycle or reuse items at both school and at home, and the Regional Recycler Competition is about getting kids thinking about sustainability in a fun and interactive way,” Cr Flannery said. “With $4,000 in prize money up for grabs, it’s a fun way to not only learn about sustainability, but also potentially win some great prize money for your school that can be redirected into school facilities or programs. “While many households in the Moreton Bay Region dutifully use their recycling bins, more than 176,000 tonnes of waste was sent to landfill last year - of which half could have been recycled or repurposed.

most creative and innovative wearable items, such as clothing, bags, hats or jewellery made entirely of used and unwanted items. “There’s no limit to what kids can create or what materials can be used - from plastic bags, to old clothes, towels and manchester, coffee pods or plastic straws - the possibilities are endless. “It’s all about using your imagination and having fun, while helping to create a sustainable culture in schools and ELCs across Moreton Bay. “Just note recyclable items may be used, but make sure the outfit can be easily dismantled to remove the materials for recycling once

no longer required.” The annual Regional Recycler Competition is part of council’s ongoing Community Waste Minimisation Program, which has engaged more than 90 early learning centres, primary and secondary schools, resulting in more than 83 per cent of education facilities in Moreton Bay auditing their waste practices. The Program was recognised state-wide in 2016, taking out the ‘Community Award’ at the Premier’s Sustainability Awards. Entries for the 2017 Regional Recycler Competition will open on Monday, 10 July and close Friday, 6 October 2017. Winners will be announced during National Recycling Week Celebrations from 1319 November. For terms and conditions or to submit your entry visit www.moretonbay.qld.gov. au/regionalrecycler

“By engaging our youngest residents, we hope to promote positive flow-on effects to recycling and waste minimisation not only at school, but also at home.” Cr Flannery said through this year’s theme, ‘Rescued Funky Fashion’, council would be looking for the

a perfect

match By Neil Wilson

I

n what could best be described as a totally ironic twist of fate, it seems that many of the foods that we find enjoyable are apparently detrimental to our everyday health. This being the case, I consider myself so lucky that two of my favourite foods are thought of as really healthy choices as well as being able to be enjoyed separately or combined to make a tasty snack option. The first of my two most desired taste sensations is none other than that really popular crustacean, the prawn. Proven to have fewer kilojoules and more protein than beef, chicken, lamb or pork, prawns possess less fat than all land based animal protein sources and contain zero carbohydrates. As is the case with most seafood they are naturally high in Omega 3 and 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids which are better known as good fats. A normal sized prawn contains about 2 grams of fat, 30 grams of protein and

JUL/AUG 2017 - ISSUE 07

The second and no less tasty partner in what I describe as a perfect culinary match is the avocado and, if you thought that prawns shape up as being a healthy food choice, then the benefits associated with eating the incredibly popular avocado will make them pale in comparison. The avocado is the fruit of the tree called Persea Americana and is a wonderful source of nutrition. It is often regarded as a superfood. Also called the avocado pear, because of it’s shape, the “avo” does not contain any cholesterol or sodium and is extra low in saturated fat. It also contains more potassium than a banana and nutritionists tell us that most people don’t get as much potassium as they should. A high potassium intake is associated with reduced blood pressure which is a major risk factor for heart attacks and strokes. Avocado is actually a high fat food and in fact, seventy seven percent of the calories in it are from fat, the majority of which is oleic acid which is a mono-unsaturated fatty acid that is the major component in olive oil. Oleic acid has been linked to reduced inflammation and has demonstrated beneficial effects on genes that are associated with cancer and the fats in an avocado are also very resistant to heat induced oxidation, therefore making avocado oil a safe choice for cooking. There are a number of ways that avocados can be enjoyed and this includes spreading the flesh on toast for breakfast, as an accompaniment to chicken or seafood on a sandwich and as part of a salad mix.

approximately 125 grams of minerals. Interestingly, different species of prawns have been found to contain different levels of Omega 3 and therefore are beneficial to a variety of the body so if you favour a feed of King prawns, your brain is the beneficiary whilst Tiger and Banana prawns are great for balance and Endeavour prawns for brawn. As an excellent source of vitamins, prawns contain iodine, zinc and iron as well as being rich in niacin which is essential for the release of energy. Whilst all varieties of prawns are a sought after item for special occasions such as Christmas or Easter, they are also a favourite snack for weekend lunches and can be used as the main ingredient in a range of meals. My personal choice is either the Kings or Tigers as I have found them to be an ideal size for eating au-natural or as part of a meal.

Now whilst I absolutely love eating either of the above foods at any time, when they are combined the taste is awesome. My favourite way to eat a combination of prawns and avocado is to place one kilogram of King prawns into a blender, add in one to two avocados, season with salt and pepper and a small amount of lemon juice, (best to add a little of these at a time until you achieve a taste that suits) blend into a smooth paste and refrigerate. This paste can be placed into half avocado shells and served as an entrée however I also enjoy this either as a dip or on a sandwich and sometimes I have been known to just eat the whole mix with a spoon immediately after I remove it from the blender. I am sure that what I have described will not suit everyone’s taste but all I can say s that it certainly is something that I just can’t resist but let’s be completely honest, what a healthy addiction.

s one of the absolutely essential community assistance organisations on our island, the Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre relies heavily on the services provided by the group of dedicated volunteers who give of their time and varied skills to help those who need it. Having retired from a senior executive role in the mining industry and moving to the area in the mid 1990s, Peter was also a qualified investment advisor and, in this role had seen a lot of people get into financial difficulties. Feeling that his experience in this area could be used to help those who were experiencing financial stress, he became a qualified financial counsellor and in 2011, set up the Financial Counselling Service at the Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre. ‘Since I set the service up

there have been several hundred people through who were struggling to keep out of debt and we help them to reduce their debt so as to free up monet to live,’ said Peter. ‘Although we still provide the same service to those doing it tough, we are now called the Debt Relief Service. I have been able to train a few extra staff so the service has expanded somewhat. There is a National Debt Helpline that people can call and the number for that is 1800 007 007,’ he said. Peter explained that once someone requests the help of the service and declares their debts, the creditors then have to communicate with the staff of the service and this in itself relieves some of the stress for the client. He also said that as the Neighbourhood Centre offers such a wide variety of

services to members of the community, he is able to draw on them from time to time to assist his clients. ‘There is a legal service at the centre that I refer to often, Peter told me. ‘As well as that there is counselling available and we help people with food and other expenses too,’ said Peter. Whilst the Debt Relief Service is an important part of what is available at the centre, there so many other ways that anyone facing hardship can be assisted there and these include dealing with Centrelink, emergency relief and family support. The Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre is at 9 Verdoni Street in Bellara and they can be contacted Monday to Thursday on 3408 8440.

BIKKIES IN A BOTTLE people go to a lot of trouble designing environmental enrichment for captive animals to maintain their health. Mostly it involves working for food. Our dogs are physically and mentally active and also need something to do with all of that doggy energy. For active pets that always need to be doing something, the food bowl can be their worst enemy. The food is eaten quickly then boredom creates bad habits such as barking, chewing furniture or pulling the washing from the clothes line…. None of these behaviours are good to live with, yet, to a bored pooch, these are simply a way to meet their daily needs. In the wild, animals spend most of their day stalking, foraging or fossicking for food. This is what they are designed for. In zoos,

An easy thing to do for your dog is to recycle a plastic milk carton as a food dispensing chew toy. Remove the plastic lid and ring, place your dog’s daily rations inside, and give this to your dog prior to leaving for work in the morning. Most active dogs will learn to use these without any help. I have heard that animal shelters use a similar method for homeless dogs, to ease their stay.

THE COMMUNITY VOICE

Dear Editor,

Like many people, I watched ‘War on Waste’ on the ABC recently. It showed the enormous number of take-away coffee cups that our society throws away. So I was delighted to read in your newspaper that the Bongaree Village Deli and The Big Bun Bakery in Bellara have taken steps to offer customers take-away cups to keep. They also offer a discount to those who return to refill these cups. There are many venues on the island that serve takeaway coffee. I’m hoping they follow the good example from the two that have taken positive action. Yours sincerely, Rosie McKenry Bongaree Dear Editor, The recent suggested

proposal to place a Carbon Tax on Cars is another example of greed and stupidity of the Turnbull Government.

We are constantly being misled by information, Greenies and those that think the planet is doomed. I suggest people start to read the Pollution Myths we are being constantly fed, with Global warming/cooling etc. Human generated carbon emissions are still The amount generated world wide by humanity is minute compared with nature itself. I believe any taxes placed on the myth about carbon output should be scrutinised. If this Government was so certain about coal fired power stations being dirty why export coal to the second highest populated area on the planet- namely

India.

(We can’t use it, but they can), it sounds ridiculous? If it is dirty why export else where on the planet? Do not suggest a Carbon tax is for anything other than further revenue collecting. It is not necessary and we should be generating power as cheap as we can we are paying twice the cost of power already due to mismanagement, greed and pure profit above and beyond what is an acceptable level. Don’t be conned, check out the Pollution Myths and start confronting this Government’s Ministers.

in front of the Library and two young girls (early teens) rushed to my aid. The girls were very caring and assisted me off the road. I walked to the bus stop and sat to recover - shaken not stirred. A few minutes later the girls and a woman approached me. The woman, their mother, was also a nurse and came across the road to make sure that I was alright. It transpired that the family was visiting from Sydney and were heading home the next day. They were very solicitous, offered to drive me home to Woorim and my heart was warmed by their caring.
