IT’S TIME FOR A CHANGE
By Neil Wilson
We all know that the new strategies which various businesses force upon us from time to time are introduced in an effort to make lifer easier for all concerned, right? Well, in some instances, there certainly does seem to be a definite improvement that results from these changes but, when referring to one change that will take place in November, it would seem
that the only beneficiary from what has been announced will be the business itself. In a recent letter from Suncorp Bank Regional manager, Rowena RiddellOosthuizen, bank customers have been advised that as of 4pm on November 17th, the Bribie Island branch of the Suncorp will close the doors for the final time. The letter advises that the decision has

been made due to a decline in the amount of customers who are coming into the bank on a day to day basis and blames this on the situation in which more people are using internet banking and the ATM machines. I find the part about not enough people actually coming into the bank quite perplexing because without exception, any of the Suncorp customers that I have spoken to have commented on having always had to wait to be attended to whenever they have gone to the branch due to there being other customers in front of them in the line. Another reason for my lack of comprehension is the results of a survey that I conducted recently. Over a sixty minute period early on a Thursday afternoon, whilst there were seventeen people who used the ATM,
twenty two people entered the bank’s premises and, as this equates to over three each minute, one has to ask the question, how long does the line of customers that are waiting to be served have to be before the Suncorp hierarchy consider it a viable proposition to maintain this facility? This announcement has understandably caused concern to many people and I am personally aware of quite a large number of customers who have closed their Suncorp accounts in protest and because they are not prepared to put up with the inconvenience associated with the closure. In the letter, Ms RiddellOosthuizen attempts to console customers by telling them that they will be able to use the Post Office for their banking needs but, as there

is usually a waiting line to be experienced when using this facility, one can only imagine how the increased volume of people through the door will affect the service one would receive. Other than the Post Office, the letter offers the alternative of either travelling to the branch at Morayfield or another facility at Donnybrook. For those who wish to use the services associated with an ATM, they are informed that the RED-E Teller machines may be used without incurring any extra charges. One very concerned former Suncorp customer told me that not only have her and other members of her family closed their accounts at the bank, they are urging anyone that they know to do the same as a way of making the decision makers at the bank aware that a loty of people are not happy. ‘As well as our personal and business accounts, we are in the process of moving our Community Announcement
Superannuation to another fund,’ the angry former depositor told me. It seems that the days when the bank was there to provide a personal service are well and truly gone. They seem to forget that it’s our money, not theirs. I don’t know how some of the older people are going to get on if they stay

The rallies are held in conjunction with the Pine Rivers area branch of the Historic Motorcycle Club of Queensland and when Kaye and John suggested having a weekend rally, the club asked them to go ahead and organised it. Kaye and John Hammond have been Ariel owners for many years and, before moving to the island from Toowoomba where John was the Queensland Secretary of the Historic MC Club, the couple owned four of these beautiful machines. ‘When we moved here we had to down-size and now we only have the one which is my 1949 Ariel 350cc NG DeLuxe,’ Kaye told me. ‘John will be riding it in the rally as I am recovering from a broken foot and find the kick start

SPONSORS THANKED FOR SUPPORTING LADIES’ GOLF As a long established course that is well known as a great place for competitive golf, the Bribie Island Golf Club at Woorim often becomes the venue for some very good golfers to play for a variety of prizes which have been donated by a number of generous businesses that support the golfing community. When I spent some time talking with Ladies Captain Lyn Ball about what’s coming up for the ladies in the next few weeks, while telling me about the various competitions to be played during September and October. VALE - WARWICK OUTRAM Few people have served the Bribie Island community in so many important ways, over so many years, as Warwick Outram. He passed away peacefully on Thursday 7th September in the company of his loving family. He lived 43 of his 90 years on Bribie Island, serving in many business and community roles, and documenting the rich history of the island. Over the next 43 years Warwick was committed to his new home, devoting his energy and business skills in so many ways for the good of Bribie Island community. He served as President and Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce for 10 years, and for 20 years compiled the “Holiday Guide and Business Directory” to promote the islands tourism and services.

The more he wrote, the more the fascinating stories emerged from long term residents, and over the last 20 years he has written, and personally published 57 books about Bribie Island History and heritage. His wife Dot became very sick and they gave up the Caravan Park while he nursed her to her end in 2001, while developing commercial fishing interests and representing the Queensland State Fishing industry. With his Information Technology background he worked hard to keep pace with modern computer developments, capturing historical records and an extensive photo collection. In 2006 he moved to Bribie Cove retirement Village where he continued his prolific writing, resulted in Bribie’s most extensive History book production. All typed, compiled, illustrated, printed, bound and distributed by an octogenarian who had a passion for the islands rich and colourful past. As each of his 57 book were produced, copies were sent to both the National and Queensland State Libraries, as well as Queensland University and the Royal Historical Society of Queensland, and local Libraries. Warwick was still writing about his beloved Bribie Island until just a few weeks before he died. He recently celebrated his 90th Birthday with 24 of his Children, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren who have all remained living in the area. He was a very determined and generous man, who stood by strong principles and was determined to leave a legacy for future generations. WHEN THE REASON IS BIGGER THAN THE CHALLENGE
Billy is a devoted dad to his son Ashton I suppose that when I tell you that Caboolture pharmacist and former boxing champion Billy Tindall is planning to run from Warrigal in Victoria to the Sunshine Coast, you will straight away begin to wonder what could motivate someone to undertake an arduous trek which will obviously be a very tough physical and mental challenge for this twenty seven year old father of one little boy. ‘As a parent, I am dedicated to ensuring the safety of young children and so I am doing the run in order to raise both money and awareness
for the important work carried out by the Morcombe Foundation,’ Billy told me. ‘The run will commence on September 23rd and will end at the Sunshine Coast town of Woombye on October 27th which is recognised as the “Day for Daniel” in memory of Daniel Morcombe,’said Billy. When I asked Billy about how he will stay focused during the marathon journey, he told me that remembering how the reason is so much greater than the challenge will be what keeps him going. Billy has proven his ability to achieve success as an athlete many times in the past having
won many titles in the boxing ring from age ten to when he turned twenty one. As well as winning five Golden Gloves titles, he also held both state and national championship titles during his time in the ring and Gary Parsons, his support team leader, mentor and former around Australia marathon runner believes that succeeding in these past challenges has prepared Billy for success as a marathon runner. ‘He will deliver,’ said Gary. ‘I asked him earlier how he was feeling and he told me that he is itching to get started so I believe that he is prepared for it,’ he added. What I found to be a rather interesting piece of background regarding how Gary, who many people would know as the popular former Division One Councillor, and Billy came to meet. ‘I remember hearing about Gary when he undertook his run around Australia and admiring him for not only his success but also for the tremendous commitment that he had,’ explained Billy. ‘A few years later, while I was school Captain at Caboolture High School, I was in the Lions Youth of the Year contest and this was being held at the RSL. Gary was one of the judges and after I had met him there, he told me that, if ever I am planning anything, I should let him know, so when I started running I reached out to Gary and now here we are,’ he said. Billy’s proud mum Christine will play a major role in his support team along with Gary and his wife Sharon who, as well as having been support for Gary during his time as a marathon competitor, is also an experienced runner in her own right. Christine explained to me about what part of her role in the support team
will be. ‘I have always been supportive of Billy when he has undertaken a challenge and I know how he thinks,’ said Christine. ‘I know how to motivate him when he needs it,’ she told me. The success of any event such as the one that Billy is about to undertake relies heavily on support from sponsors, both at a local level as well as businesses with a national standing and there are quite a number of generous businesses who will be helping Billy along the way. Billy is employed at Jadin Pharmacy in Market Plaza at Morayfield and, as a way of history repeating itself, as well as being a very generous sponsor of Billy’s run, they sponsored Gary Parsons on his record breaking run around Australia many years ago. Coming on board to supply food and other groceries for the team is Woolworths who are also supplying Caltex fuel cards to keep the support vehicles on the road. A Mart Sports at Morayfield have provided five pairs of Asics running shoes and Mega Bake Kitchen will keep Billy supplied with snack bars to help ward off the hunger during the long days on the road. ‘A very important part of my preparation for the run is having a suitable venue in which to keep my fitness level at the necessary standard’ said Billy. ‘I run every day but there are other areas of fitness that are important and Iron House Fitness have generously provided me with gym membership to help in this regard and Sign Blast in Caboolture have offered to sign write the vehicles. The support of all these businesses is so important and I am very grateful to each and every one of them,’ he said. There is a very good reason

like to know why Billy is commencing the run at Warrigal and this is due to a statue that can be seen in that town. ‘When I was a young boy, I met the boxer Lionel Rose and over the years we became good friends,’ Billy informed me. There is a statue of Lionel at Warrigal so starting from there will be special to me,’ he said. From Warrigal, Billy will travel through several country towns in Victoria with the first day planned to finish at Cockatoo. From there each of the following days will see Billy run sixty or more kilometres toward the end of the 2,000 kilometre journey and, by the eighth day, after travelling through Glenburn, Billy Tindall (L) won many boxing titles before beginning to train as a marathon runner
Seymour, Euroa and Chiltern, Billy will cross into New South Wales. From Ettamogah, Billy will run through Henty, Wagga Wagga, Bethungra, Young and Cowra and then on to Eugowra, Parkes, Tomingley and then Dubbo where he will be met by his wife Bec and his son Ashton. As well as giving him the opportunity to spend a few hours with his loved ones, the day will also be a celebration of Ashton’s second birthday. The next few days of the

estimated thirty day trek will take Billy through Gilgandra, Tooraweenah, Coonabarabran, Yarrawan, Narrabri and then to Moree, Goondiwindi, Milmerran, Pittsworth and on towards his final destination. If anyone happens to be holidaying in any of the areas where Billy is travelling through, I’m sure he would be pleased to hear some words of encouragement from his home area. During the run, Billy will be calling into the Woolworths stores along the way where he will no doubt be talking to store employees and shoppers while the team stock up on supplies. The team at the Bribie Islander would like to wish Billy a safe and successful journey and we look forward to telling our readers about the trek after his return. We
will be in constant contact with Billy and the team during the run and anyone who is interested will be able to see regular updates about Billy’s progress on our Facebook page. Prior to beginning this arduous trek which will take him through three states, on Thursday 21st September, Billy will be talking about the run with Larry and Kylie on The Morning Show so I would suggest that you tune in to hear how Billy is preparing for the event. If you would like to support the run and the Morcombe Foundation, you can find a link on Billy’s Facebook page which is “Ultra Marathon for Daniel” or you can log on to the website www. danielmorcombe.com. au/fundraiser/event/ultramarathon-for-daniel and follow the instructions.

MORETON BAY SECURES AWARDWINNING WASTE PROGRAM FOR ANOTHER THREE YEARS Moreton Bay Regional Council has awarded a $218,000 tender securing its award-winning waste minimisation program for another three years.
Council made the announcement that it will continue its region-wide waste education and audit partnership with Envriocom Australia through to 2020 after its coordination committee meeting on Tuesday, August 29. Council’s award-winning waste minimisation program encourages students and the wider Moreton Bay community to change how they look at waste at schools, early learning centres, homes
and businesses, and helps to implement a number of solutions to better reduce, reuse and recycle.
Asset, Construction and Maintenance Spokesperson Councillor Peter Flannery said the tender formed part of council’s $47.9 million investment in waste services in 2017/18.
through council’s waste minimisation program and audits, we’re helping to encourage better recycling habits in our community,” Cr Flannery said.
Last year, the waste minimisation program won the Premier’s Sustainability Community Award.
The tender also includes assistance with council’s waste recovery and recycling audits, which help identify how Moreton Bay households are businesses are managing their waste.
“In just eight years, 62 schools and 18 early learning centres in Moreton Bay have completed or are currently implementing waste reduction initiatives through council’s waste reduction scheme.
“46 per cent of waste in Moreton Bay is currently recycled and diverted from landfill, and
“One example is Wamuran State School, who increased the amount they recycled from 17 per cent to
45 per cent, and reduced the amount of waste going to landfill by 25 per cent. “With more than 159,000 properties utilising kerbside waste and recycling collection in Moreton Bay, programs like this play an important role in ensuring we reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible.” The tender also includes an option for council to extend its partnership for a further two one-year periods. It joins a number of unique waste reduction initiatives across Moreton Bay, including: • Free tipping for
thebribieislander residents; • Green waste recovery and free mulch for residents; • Treasure markets at Caboolture and Dakabin; • Assisted waste collection service for residents with medical approval; • Community, school and early learning centre waste education workshops, tours and presentations; • Support for community events including Clean Up Australia Day, International Composting Awareness Week and National Recycling Week; and • Annual regional recycler competition. PLUMBDOGS As most of are aware, the residents of this island and the nearby areas are so fortunate to be frequently offered the chance for an afternoon or evening of great musical entertainment by one or more of the solo artists or bands that can be heard at various venues from time to time. It all started just over five years ago when Daryl Sini and one of his mates decided to combine their musical talents for the purpose of becoming entertainers and, when exploring ideas for what name to call themselves, the obvious answer was to use their daytime occupations as inspiration. Whilst anyone who is fortunate enough to be at an event where the Plumbdogs take to the stage will be treated to a wide range of music from several genres, the band is best known for their renditions of seventies rock such As hits from The Easybeats, Jo Jo Zep and others from that era. ‘We like to get the crowd rocking
and, when we play at the Blue Pacific, we get them up dancing with songs like “Jeremiah was a Bullfrog” and also “Midnight Special” by Creedance Clearwater Revival,’ said Plumbdogs lead guitarist Keith Haigh. Although this band is becoming increasingly popular as more music lovers become aware of just how good they are, they are still able to take bookings from time to time so, if anyone would like to book the Plumbdogs to entertain at an event, Daryl Sini can be contacted on 0418 790567 or you can call Keith Haigh on 0419 733282.

OUTRIGGER CLUB SAYS THANKS

By Neil Wilson
With their new season having begun on July 2nd, the members of the Bombora Outrigger Club would like to make sure that their sponsors know just how much their help is appreciated. The club President Roslyn Fritz told me that without the generous sponsorship of Busy Fingers, Bribie Island Lioness Club, On Q Realty and Paddock 2 Plate, the Bombora Outrigger Club would not be what it is after such a short time. ‘We formed the club in March this year and adopted the name Bombora because of it’s Aboriginal meaning which is “Reef and Waves” and we already have about thirty members,’ said Roz. Busy Fingers and the Lioness Club

A keen paddler since taking up the sport in 2003 while living in Gladstone, Roz explained to me how much being able to paddle means to her. ‘At one time when I was living in the country, I didn’t paddle for a few years. I actually began to suffer from depression because of that,’ said Roz. ‘I am very passionate about outrigging because it’s such a great sport. I was hooked from the first time that I tried it,’ she said.

Islander - Mini By Brooke Savige
Welcome to another edition of the ‘Mini’. I am enjoying hearing all your questions and the many ‘rumours’ that we hear flying around. I continue to be asked about whether we will see a Coles, Kmart or KFC move to the island and whilst I have spoken about this before I thought I would readdress it. In order for businesses to establish on the island they must first have a location. Council are responsible for zoning land and approving development based on land zonings, however, we do not regulate what retailers will utilise land zoned for shopping centres. There is the provision (under the planning scheme) for a shopping centre to be established opposite the back of Mitre 10, near the Translink bus stop and large car park, however there is no finalised approval at this
point. Should this progress further I will keep the community informed.
Another question I received recently was around the water towers at Bongaree and Woorim. These towers are in highly visible areas and it is with great pleasure that I can confirm that after much advocating, UnityWater have agreed to upgrade these towers with murals. Similar projects have been undertaken on the Sunshine Coast and at Kallangur water tower with beautiful works of art increasing the amenity of these areas. Some preliminary ideas have been gathered for our water towers and the community will have the opportunity to vote on a design for each of the towers in the coming months. Once again I will keep the community updated as to when voting opens.

Lastly I wanted to confirm that there are a number of smaller projects being rolled out across division one in the coming months including shade shelters, bollards, exercise equipment, footpaths and drink refill stations. If you see these projects occurring please be patient and as always, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any concerns, suggestions or feedback you may have.

A WISE OLD MAN ONCE SAID
| 17
By Neil Wilson
I suppose that from time to time most of us hear or read a saying or slogan that, if we think long and hard about it, has a meaning that the author believed could be useful in everyday life but there are some of these adages that, when analysed, can be taken to have a humorous or sarcastic meaning. For instance, the saying “Absence makes the heart grow fonder” takes on a whole new meaning if you add the words, “for someone else.” As well as Confucius and Chairman Mau, the two most famous creators of what are referred to as very wise sayings, there are others who create similar lines and phrases who never receive due recognition for their efforts and this is frequently the case when advertising slogans are successfully used to promote one product or another. I’ll bet that nobody has ever thought about how smart the person was who came up “We’re happy little Vegemites” which is one of the most iconic slogans ever to be used. Then again, I’ve always been a bit perplexed about when Professor Julius Sumner-Miller asks the question, ‘Why is it so?” in the Cadbury advertisement. For heaven’s sake, if the professor doesn’t know, how does he expect anyone else to answer that question! Yes, I know that some of what I am writing in this article is more than a bit “tongue in cheek” but on a more serious note, the people who use their genius to create advertising slogans really do deserve more recognition. It is a little known fact that some of these slogans are actually
thought of by people outside the industry and an example of this is when an old uncle of mine who owned a plumbing supplies business came up with a slogan to be used when promoting a new and improved toilet flushing system. His slogan, which was used in a national campaign to advertise the product was, ‘Don’t blush when you flush.” Another promotional catch phrase that always had me wondering was used in the ad for AAMI insurance. Just think about whether someone who has had major damage done to his car or boat can really appreciate the good side of, “Lucky you’re with AAMI.” I reckon that they would more than likely just want to inflict pain on the person who said those words. Okay, enough about advertising slogans for this article, let’s take a closer look at the way some of the so called ‘wise old sayings” can be interpreted. Many of the most well known sayings were the work of Confucius, a man who was definitely old and by reputation also wise. His adage, “It does not matter how slowly we go as long as we don’t stop” was coined long before the motor vehicle was invented but every day I see examples of drivers who have adopted this as their personal motto. I swear that some of these drivers were put on this earth purely and simply to test how slowly the internal combustion engine will go without stopping! While still examining the works of Confucius, one of his very well known pieces of wisdom told us that, “He who will not economise will have to agonise.” I have
Confucius was a wise man always wondered whether this was his attempt at giving advice to politicians. Moving away from the sayings of this wise Chinese philosopher and briefly taking on a more serious attitude, Thomas Edison once very accurately described the way some people’s lives have played out when he said, “Many of life’s failures are experienced by people who did not realise how close that they were to success when they gave up.”
Don’t blush when you flush A saying that I find to be a very accurate description of life is, “A new broom sweeps clean but an old broom knows the corners.” Another very apt line which is credited to IT mastermind, Steve Jobs is, “Your time is limited so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” How true! One that many people should keep in mind is the Korean saying, “Even a fish wouldn’t get into trouble if it kept it’s mouth shut” and while we’re on the subject of fish, I’m sure most people are familiar with the verse that has it’s origins in the bible and says, “Give a man a fish and feed him for a day but teach him to fish and
he’ll eat forever.” What about if we change that slightly so the last part reads, “Teach him to fish and he can escape from his wife for the weekend!” The Danish saying “One should speak little with others and much with oneself” always reminds me of the advice that I was given by an employer many years ago and have often used it to assist me in day to day situations. When talking about good strategies to use when dealing with the general public, my employer’s advice was, ‘You have two ears and one mouth so listen twice as much as you talk.” Throughout the ages there have been many thousands of sayings, some wise and some not, written about how to deal with the situations that we face in the course of everyday life and, no matter who wrote them or how relevant they are, the authors should be admired for having the courage and often the wisdom to make their thoughts known to others. Whilst I would never claim to have the wisdom demonstrated by people such as Confucius or even Chairman Mao, I do believe that by taking notice of some of their adages and trying to learn from them, I am a lot wiser than I would have otherwise been. I will end this article with one more of the sayings made famous by Confucius. “Life is really simple but we insist on making it complicated.”

TIGERS ROAR IN GRAND FINAL WIN Bribie Tigers Senior Mens team ended Maroochydore’s premiership hopes winning the Grand Final at Sunshine Coast Stadium.
Maroochydore went into the game seeking their fourth straight win, but Bribie Tigers prevailed 2-0 to claim a long awaited premiership. The fast paced game was a nail biter with the men 1-0 up at half time, but another goal in the second half saw the game tied up at 2-0. Coach Chris Knight couldn’t be happier and credits their success to a strong team spirit. The team has worked hard this season finishing the competition top of the ladder and taking out the minor premiership for Division 4. They won 18 of their 21 games this season, drawing twice and losing once. They scored
a phenomenal 115 goals and only conceded 29 goals to the opposition, not counting the 2-0 grand final win and the 6-1 win in the semi-finals against Kawana Yellow. President John Aldous says we could not be prouder, four out of our six competition teams made it through to finals. We know that right across the sunshine coast competition the Bribie Tigers has one of the highest ratios of teams through to the finals and our supporters really turned out to cheer them on. We are really starting to see the results of the hard work the club is putting into its players. Our Senior Women, played an amazing game in the Grand Final, but the undefeated Buderim Black were just too good winning the premiership
Our winning grand final team - Senior Men
Coach Chris Knight with the Grand Final trophy. 4-1. The ladies had a tough road to the Grand Final, finishing fourth in Division 3 at the end of the season. They defeated Caloundra FC 3-0 in the semi-final and showed real team spirit against Beegees FC in the Preliminary final winning this game in a nail-biting penalty shoot-out where Bribie succeeded with a final score 2(4) to Beegees 2(3). For our under 12s they finished their season as minor premiers at the top of the ladder, however they went down to Flinders FC in a nail biting penalty shoot-out with Flinders 2(4) to our 2(2). President, John Aldous said, that for their first year in the junior competition this is an amazing result. Our under 13s exceeded their 2016 results by making it through to the preliminary

finals this year. They were amazing against Maleny FC, coming back after being 3-0 down at half time and scoring two second half goals. Unfortunately this wasn’t enough to take home the win, but we know that next season they will be just as formidable. John said that there is no doubt we are really making our mark on the Sunshine Coast competition and we plan to continue to build on our success. We intend to enter teams in higher grades for the 2018 season and would welcome all aspiring footballers to keep an eye out for our January sign-on. NO, THE’RE NOT BIG TAXIS As anyone who has spent time driving the big rigs will tell you, smell of the exhaust, the sound of a powerful engine and the whole different feel associated with being in control of a vehicle that weighs more than thirty or forty tonnes is something that you never forget or for that matter, ever really want to.
The 1960 Diamond T A very good example of the above is the way local taxi and limousine operator, George Goold takes time out from his business to maintain and show his two beautifully restored Diamond T prime movers. Having spent many years on the road firstly as a

truck driver and then behind the wheel of interstate coaches, George certainly has developed a love for the big rigs and makes a few trips each year to various truck shows around the country includind events in Melbourne and Sydney. As well as the two very old examples of the vehicles used in the middle 1900’s, George also has a 1985 Kenworth and a forty foot drop deck trailer which he still drives himself to transport the Diamond T’s to the shows. ‘One of the two restored prime movers is a 1959 Diamond T which has a straight six petrol engine and was one of only one hundred to come to Australia,’ George told me. ‘It was owned by Opperman’s Transport in Melbourne and was one of a fleet of ten that the company had running up and down the Hume Highway. When I bought it, I was told that I would have trouble finding
There was only 100 of this model in Australia parts for it but I eventually restored it to what it is now,’ Explained George. “The other Diamond T is a 1960 model which is powered by a 471 GM engine and was operated by Cromack and Tranter of Grafton,’ he added. When I caught up with George, he had just loaded the two prime movers and was preparing to take them to a truck show in Gatton at the weekend. He told me that following this show, his next chance to give people a look at these two rigs that he is obviously very proud of will be when he takes them to the Jacaranda Festival in Grafton. ‘A show that I am really looking forward to is the
one in Tarcutta on the Hume Highway where the Truckies’ Memorial is situated,’ said George. ‘ Down there they have allocated a site of over thirty acres which will be used to establish a Truck and Farm Machinery Museum and I am actually a foundation member of that organisation,’ he said. Anyone who has the opportunity to inspect these examples of George Goold’s dedication to perfection will obviously then have a much better understanding of why the entire fleet of Bribie Island Taxis and Limousines is always in absolutely top condition.

ABBEY CHURCH TURNS 50
Abbey Church Oct 2010 On the 9th September 1967, a small crowd gathered to attend a service of dedication for the newly erected Abbey Church at St Michaels. The church was built by members of the Abbey Community who had recently moved to the area from the Blue Mountains, NSW, to be their place of worship. The building of the church is quite extraordinary as the Community was almost penniless when they arrived in Caboolture and through hard work and a fair bit of bartering a beautiful small chapel was built. The Abbey Community had originally emigrated from England, via
Cyprus arriving in Australia in 1955. They brought with them an international collection of antiquities, which would become the basis of the Abbey Museum, and also over forty-five Medieval and Victorian stained glass windows that would become a standout feature of the new Abbey Church. There are many stories of how the Abbey Community built the church and one was a classic example of recycling at its best. The Community had been offered the materials from an old fish and chip shop that was to be demolished and told “if you

christenings. It has touched the lives of many, not only because of its old world charm, but also because of the passion and commitment of the members to increase good in the world.
In the last 50 years the Abbey Church has seen many changes. The old weatherboard exterior is gone, covered with a smart brick wall. The single pitched roof became three when the church was extended in 1978. This extension allowed for the installation of several more stained glass windows including two large medieval panels that originally came from Winchester Cathedral, UK.
On Saturday 9th September, 2017, the church will celebrate its 50 years of service to the local community. The Abbey Community wish to thank all those who during the past 50 years have helped, supported and been involved with the Church in any way.
The Abbey Church, set within beautiful gardens, has over the years been very popular for weddings, funerals and

BRIBIE ISLAND AND DISTRICT NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE
BETTE WEBB As the saying goes, “There are two things in this world that are unavoidable and they are death and taxes.” Whilst I certainly hope that I never have to write an article that relates to someone being able to help with the former of those two, the third volunteer to be featured in this series about the wonderful volunteers and the services that they provide at the Bribie and District Neighbourhood Centre can certainly be of assistance to anyone who needs a hand with their tax return.
to help people, Bette has been working as a Tax Help Volunteer since the mid 1990’s. ‘I came to Bribie in 1990 and have often said that this was when my life began. I became a volunteer when I realised that I needed an interest,’ Bette explained. ‘ I will never regret becoming a volunteer and I hope that I can continue until my brain feels that I should not. I have a wonderful back-up team at the centre now and I feel good that Sandra and Pam will carry on after I am unable to keep going,’ said Bette.
As someone who once earned her living as a book keeper at a time when qualified accountants usually delegated major tasks such as trial balances to their staff whilst they were enjoying long lunches and the like, Bette Webb is no stranger to the challenges associated with even the most complicated paperwork and, as a Tax Help Volunteer who has been trained by the Australian Tax Office, Bette and her assistants Sandra and Pam are available to take the stress out of filing tax returns each Saturday from July through to October at the Neighbourhood Centre.
Bette told me that when she took on her role as a volunteer there were eight Tax Help volunteers and the training was done differently and took three days with three or four tutors each session. Being a person whose input was obviously valued, Bette has been involved in seminars that have been responsible for certain changes/ improvements in the system. ‘I was involved in the seminar for changing the emblem of Tax Help from a lovely smiling face to a boring three stacks of nothing which we were told represented a family (mum, dad and a child),’ said Bette. ‘I was also involved in a three day seminar which drafted the questions for the short form and retiree’s tax form. I was rather proud of that

seminar and I made friends with Raeleen Vivian who used to call me “The Bribie Mafia,” she added. Over her years as a dedicated volunteer, Bette has been responsible for helping thousands of people with their tax returns and this includes many instances where the returns have been foe multiple years. She told me that at one stage her good friend Joyce Stibbes used to spend many Sundays working on these returns in the office of Joyce’s son, Dean Stibbes. Since moving to the island, Bette has worked in the office of several members of Federal Parliament including Mal Brough and Wyatt Roy and she told me that she felt very proud to have been able to have that opportunity. Just as one would expect when a volunteer has helped so many people over the years, Bette has received three Longman Award area nominations for her work with Tax Help and her other passion, Family History. She is also duly proud of her nomination for the Peter Beattie Award and of being recognised by Rotary Caboolture for her work as a volunteer. A great indication of how well someone is regarded in relation to their work is the number of clients that return time after time and when looking at these statistics
in the case of Tax Help Volunteer, Bette Webb, the situation that has the same people returning year after year and then their children following in their footsteps needs no further analysis. An initiative of the Australian Taxation Office, Tax Help is available to anyone who has a yearly income of $60,000 or less and can meet certain guidelines which include not having worked as a contractor, ran a business own a rental property or have partnership or trust matters. If you require more information about Tax Help or any of the other important services available at the Bribie and District Neighbourhood Centre, or if you would like to enquire about becoming a volunteer, you can either visit the centre which is on Verdoni Street in Bellara and open from Monday to Thursday, or you can make a call to them on 3408 8440.

DOG FOR SALE
A guy is driving around the back woods of Canberra. He comes across an old house with a Dog-For-Sale sign on the fence: ‘Talking Dog For Sale’ Curiously, he stops the car and knocks on the front door. The owner answers and tells him the dog is in the backyard. He goes arond the back and there is a Golden Retiever sitting there. ‘You talk?’ he asks. ‘Yep,’ the dog replies. The guy takes a moment to recover from the surprise reply. Then he asks ‘So, what’s your story?’ The dog looks up and says; ‘Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so... I told ASIO I was available. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country. I sat in rooms with spies and world leaders. A horse walks into the Doctor’s and the Doctor says “Why the long face?” Doctor, Doctor, I feel like a pair of curtains. The Doctor says “Pull yourself together”

Only because no one figured out a dog could be eavesdropping.’ ‘I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running... But the jetting around really tired me out. I knew I wasn’t getting any younger so I decided to settle down. OLD MAN
An elderly man in Queensland had owned a large property for several years. He had a dam in one of the lower paddocks where he had planted mango and avocado trees. The dam had been fixed up for swimming when it was built and he also had some picnic tables placed there in the shade of the fruit trees. One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the dam to look it over, as he hadn’t been there for a while. He grabbed a ten litre bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the dam, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee.
As he came closer he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his dam. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him, ‘We’re not coming out until you leave!’ The old man frowned, ‘I didn’t come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the dam naked.’ Holding the bucket up he said, ‘I’m here to feed the crocodile.’ Moral: Old men may walk slow, but they can still think fast.

BECAUSE YOU’RE ALREADY HERE To see large ships traversing the waters off the coast at Woorim is what could be called a common sight for locals, but during recent weeks, one particular vessel seems to want to stay in the area instead of moving on to some other destination. This visitor that just doesn’t want to go away is the 63 metre long Danish hopper dredger, MODI R which has been engaged by the Moreton Bay Regional Council to carry

out vitally important sand nourishment works from mid-August to September.
The vessel is operated by Denmark based company, RN Dredging and had already been commissioned to carry out beach nourishment works at the Gold Coast in preparation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. As with any work of this nature, the dredging programme at the Gold

Division One Councillor Brooke Savige knows how important the sand replenishment at Woorim Beach is. Coast had certain periods of down time and this allowed the MBRCC to negotiate a very special price for the required work at Woorim. Division One Councillor Brooke Savige explained that restoring sand volumes at Woorim Beach was very necessary in order to protect the coastline and coastal infrastructure, while providing a buffer to allow the beach to shift with the tides and respond to natural processes. ‘RN Dredging will replenish Woorim Beach with approximately 150,000 cubic metres of sand as well as the company will also undertake monitoring and surveying works throughout the project,’ said Cr Savige. ‘Council has been working hard to develop a long term strategy for managing erosion at Woorim Beach and, as part of that strategywe expext to commence the trial of a sand recycling system on site early next year. The nourishment works will provide a fantastic
kick-start for this trial,’ she added. During her time operating along our coastline, the MODI R, which is powered by two eight cylinder engines that develop 3873 KW and has a load capacity of 1,410 cubic metres, will spread sand on to the beaches in sections of approximately fifty metres at a time, requiring the closure of these sections for about ninety minutes. ‘We apologise for any inconvenience that the dredging may have caused and appreciate the patience and understanding of the local community as well as visitors to the island,’ said Councillor Savige. ‘We know just how special that Woorim beach is, not only to residents and visitors but also for our local environment and this is why we are taking action now to ensure that that this beautiful sandy coastline is preserved for future generations,’ she said.

REDUCING THE RISK IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY
By Neil Wilson
The burn-offs caused disruption to traffic Along with the recent burn-offs in the Ningi area causing disruption to traffic and residents nearby came a timely reminder that bushfire season is once more upon us and, although we all wish that it were not the case, bushfires are a natural part of the Australian environment which occur regularly. Statistics indicate that many Australians fail to make adequate preparations for protecting their home against the damage that a fire can cause and, although there are a number of elements of a bushfire that are beyond anyone’s control, for example the weather, planning and taking certain preparations before a bushfire can drastically increase the chances of your family and home surviving with little or no effects. If you live in an area that is known to be prone to bushfires, it is regarded as your responsibility to reduce the risk to both your family and your home and you are expected to take the necessary actions to ensure survival of any bushfire that may break out in the area. Many of the measures that you can take are basically common sense and include tasks like removing dead
leaves from around the yard and in guttering as well as regularly mowing the lawn. Also, it is recommended that branches below two metres be removed and any flammable items such as garden furniture and wood piles be moved to a position well away from the house. Store flammable liquids away from the house and ensure that any pool chemicals are stored in a separate area to any other chemicals. Check that any LPG cylinders are situated with the pressure relief valve facing away from the house. Other precautions that can be taken include installing fine steel wire mesh screens on windows and doors and ensuring that your house number is clearly displayed for the reference of emergency services. If you have a swimming pool, place a static water supply sign on your front fence for fire crews to see. If you are in a rented home and you feel that your landlord or renting agent has not taken adequate steps to address the above after you have made them aware of your concerns, you should speak to your fire service to see if they are able to help. An important of preparing for any fire event is to include a
plan to ensure the well being of any pets that are a part of the household as well as any other animals such as chickens and horses. Make sure that they not only have shelter and plenty of water, but also that you list their needs on your evacuation plan.
don’t take shelter in your swimming pool as your head and other exposed parts of your body will be susceptible to radiant heat. Whilst in the situation that involves fighting a bushfire and/or sheltering from one, you should always drink plenty of water in order to keep your body hydrated.
If you have taken all the actions that are considered vital to maximise the chance of survival and you are made aware of an approaching bushfire, certain further actions now become important and the first of these is to decide whether to evacuate or stay and defend your home. When making this decision, the most important factor will be the state of you’re your physical and mental health and if you have any doubts about your ability to enduring what can be a very frightening experience, you should definitely make plans fro immediate evacuation. As part of your earlier preparations you should have prepared an evacuation plan and made all members of the household familiar with that plan.
In the past it has been recorded that most homes that do burn have survived the main fire but are then destroyed in the following hours because resulting spot fires have been left to burn. If you are well prepared to make sure that these fires are put out, you have a much better chance of saving your home. After a bushfire has passed, you should patrol your home and yard carefully, making sure that you extinguish any areas of smouldering rubble and being careful to avoid potential hazards that may be hidden under debris.
The next stage of preparation for an approaching bushfire is to make sure that the gutters are plugged and filled with water, bring any fire fighting equipment that you may have, such as hoses and pumps, into the house so that they won’t be burned. It is also a good idea to hose down the walls and roof, ensuring that after this has been done you have a ladder in an easy to access position both inside and out. At the time of an approaching fire, you should always listen to your local radio station for updates so, as part of your earlier preparation, you should make sure that you have a battery powered radio and spare batteries. When a bushfire is imminent,
Being caught in bushfires can be a frightening situation Whilst we all hope that we never have to endure the devastating effects that are a result of a bushfire, if we make sure that we have taken every possible step to be well prepared then we can take some comfort in the fact that our family and home have the best chance of survival due to us having fulfilled our responsibility.

BIEPA’S annual Wildflower Walk is part of the two week Sunshine Coast Spring Wildflower festival.

It was a beautiful sunny spring day with very little wind which made for very pleasant walking conditions. Ninety people congregated at the starting point on the corner of Cotterill Avenue and Protea Drive for an 8.30 am start in the wallum heathland National Park. There was also a display of Maureen Hinkling’s lovely wildflower cards made from her photographs. Wildflowers along the trail had been signposted by BIEPA members for easy identification. Allan Carr and John Ward were most generous in sharing their knowledge of the wildflowers and vegetation we saw. They were also excited to discover three rare species that had never been identified in this particular area. Other members were on hand to assist people with walking difficulties and in any other areas needed. A bushfire had been through the area in the spring of 2016 but the wildflowers were beginning to come back in all their glory. There were Milkmaids, Vanilla Lilies, Patersonia, Sundew, Hibbertia, Boronia, Sun Orchids and many other heath flowers to be seen and photographed. The

Handcraft GROUP
Over the past three weeks ladies from the Bribie Island Handcraft group have been knitting beanies and sockettes for premie babies at Box Hill and Anglisse Hospitals in Victoria. The sockette pattern was designed by Gwen Leadbitter to fit over little feet and any tubes which had been attached to them during their time in the humidicribs. Over one hundred pairs of sockettes and seventy beanies will be sent to the hospitals this week. Bribie Island Handcraft Club meets every Thursday morning from 8am until 11am at the Bribie Indoor Bowls Club, First Avenue. Patrons bring along their
own craft projects to work on and sometimes everyone works together on a project such as the items for the hospitals. There are lots of people who are happy to teach knitting, crocheting, beading and other handcrafts while they are working on their own projects and lots of time to chat over a cup of coffee or tea. Over the year the club has raised money for the Cancer Council, held the biggest morning tea, collected 5 cent pieces to buy food for families in Cambodia as well as making beanies, blankets, jackets and sockettes for babies in hospital.

Travel Adventures to Canada & Alaska June 2017
surrounds over the next eight days.
The start of our holiday had us flying out of Brisbane to Calgary, Canada where we stayed for one and a half days and saw the sights of Calgary including “Calgary Tower, Gasoleum Alley and the Heritage Park Museum”.
We met our coach, traveled past the Calgary Olympic Skiing Site to our first adventure which was a helicopter flight over part of the Rocky Mountains. This gave us spectacular views and scenery of these majestic mountains and helped settle the nerves a bit as heights are not my thing !!!
We then joined our tour group to explore the Rocky Mountains and its beautiful
Afterwards we continued on to Banff, a chalet town where tourists flock all year round for the great skiing in winter and beautiful lakes and waterfalls in summer. Our destination was an extremely high gondola which gave us amazing views from the mountain top of the town of Banff and the surrounding Rocky Mountains. We stayed overnight in this town before boarding our coach and continuing on to Lake Louise, an absolutely beautiful green lake which is glacier fed from the mountains. As we traveled to Lake Louise we saw many more spectacular waterfalls and waterways, as well as pine forests throughout the picturesque landscape. Grizzly/Black bears were also a sight to be seen !!! Our overnight stay at Lake Louise was at the luxurious Fairmount Lake Louise Chateau Hotel which has a staff of 800 people to handle the tourists all year round. Next day we again joined our coach heading to Athabascar Glacier. Special vehicles were used to take us up
onto the glacier so we could walk, take photos and touch the glacier too. Once back on our coach we continued heading towards the town of Jasper, again more beautiful landscape and scenery everywhere to be seen. We even managed to see several moose settling in for the night in Jasper. Early next morning we headed for the Jasper Railway Station to join the famous “Rocky Mountaineer” train for the next two days scenic tour and adventures. The scenery over the next two days was breath taking to say the least as we experienced more beautiful images of the majestic Rocky Mountains and the surrounding waterfalls,

The staff and service/facilities was impeccable, giving us an experience of a lifetime. The end of our train trip saw us in Vancouver for the day to experience the “ Vancouver Lookout” before heading by bus to Seattle as we prepared to join our cruise ship, the “Norwegian PearL” the following day for our seven day cruise of Alaska. As we cruised along the east coast of Alaska we stopped and spent the day at several towns including Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. We continued along the waterways experiencing the absolutely magnificent glaciers as we sailed back into Seattle. This marked the end of our guided tour but we still had four more days to experience the sights of Seattle on our own. We decided the best way to discover the sights of Seattle was to join the “hop on, hop off” bus as it meandered around the town. Our days were spent visiting Bainbridge Island by ferry, walking around the famous “Pike Street Markets”, the Seattle Needle” and generally seeking out lovely places to eat overlooking the Seattle waterfront before we had to head back home to Bribie Island! Our holiday lasted 21 days. During this time we saw spectacular scenery and experienced so much of what Canada and Alaska has to offer. We have so many wonderful memories to treasure and await our next holiday !!!

the recent delivery of another canoe to our club. This gives us the opportunity for even more fun and comraderie on the water. Many thanks to all our supporters and friends, on Bribie and surrounds, and to both the Moreton Bay Regional Council and State Government for their ongoing assistance. Our community rocks! Yet another great reason to celebrate is the continued success of 2 of our club members –Rose Innes and Peter Brown, who are competing in the 2-person outrigger canoe regatta, series of 6 races, across southern Queensland and northern New South Wales. They have competed in 3 races so far and are up there on points with the leaders. An awesome effort Peter and Rose. You do our new club and Bribie Island proud! Outrigger canoeing means different things to different people. For some it’s a hobby –a way of keeping active with your mates and enjoying the beauty of

SKEWERED BY A STICK
One of our Cattle Dog patients was recently skewered by a stick while on holidays with her family. Being a Cattle Dog, she loves chasing anything that moves and she loves sticks. This stick was sharp and penetrated her soft palate passing through her mouth and a long way under the shoulder skin. She received surgery and a large number of stitches, making a full recovery. But who would think playing with a stick could be dangerous? Sticks can more commonly cause minor abrasions to the inside of the mouth, teeth, and gums. Balls and ropes are safer interactive toys for dogs. The best balls
are smooth balls that are large enough to NOT be a choking risk. That rules out tennis balls (which have an abrasive coating and cause dental wear over the years), and small balls such as squash or golf balls. It is a good idea to get your dog hooked on safer toys from an early age, such as a rubber ball, soft rope or rag. It also makes them easier to control and recall off-lead. SIX TIPS TO SPRING into
Better Health
veggie-rich stir-fries and nourishing salads.
Get healthy, fit and feeling great this season with these tips from Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan. Spring cleaning doesn’t have to stop in your living area - it can extend to your health. Here are some simple tips to help you revitalise your wellbeing for the new season. One, clean up your diet. Conduct an audit of your eating habits to see which areas can be improved. Instead of focusing on what you can’t eat, indulge in the healthy foods you can enjoy, such as sensational seasonal produce. Consider planning your meals in advance, if you don’t already. A plan can save time and ensure you are incorporating a wide variety of nutritious foods and the five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit a day you need to stay healthy. Spring is a great time for light soups,
Two, spring into shape. As the weather warms up and the sun stays out for longer, it’s the perfect time to change routines for the better, with extra daylight providing more time to work on your fitness. Take in the sunshine and fresh air with a daily afternoon walk; just remember to stay SunSafe and on top of your hydration levels. Or try out a new form of physical activity, and ask a friend to join you - it will feel much less like a chore if you are having fun! Three, clear out clutter from your mind. A mental spring cleaning gives us the opportunity to get rid of habits that don’t serve us and plant seeds of positivity. Learning ways to manage stress, such as practicing relaxation exercises or meditation, helps many people cope with challenges that life brings. Four, schedule screenings and appointments. What do you need to organise to stay on top of your health checkups for the rest of the year? Check to see what cancer screenings you are eligible for on our website and take
the time to understand the look and feel of your body so you can report any changes to a GP. Finding cancer early greatly increases the chance of survival. There are national screening programs for breast, cervical and bowel cancer.
Five, smarten up your sedentary activities. Spending a lot of time on the couch often doesn’t do your body or mind any favours. Instead of zoning out to television solo, a consistent weekly viewing party can provide steady social time. You could also do stretches and body weight exercises while watching your favourite shows, to increase your physical activity for the day. Six, start writing it down. Keeping a wellness journal or taking advantage of the many tracking apps available, is an effective way of analysing your eating habits, physical activity and mental health. Writing down what you eat and drink may help you shed unwanted kilojoules, identify foods that don’t agree with you and make you more aware of certain habits, such as munching mindlessly. Diarising exercise can help ensure you reach

the recommended 150 to 300 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous intensity physical activity per week. Plus, something as easy as writing down three good things that have happened in one day can have an impact on happiness levels. Remember, at least one third of all cancers cases can be prevented through simple healthy lifestyle changes, including being active, eating well, limiting alcohol, quitting smoking, staying SunSmart and participating in cancer screening programs. A new season is a great time to try new things and develop new habits, in an effort to get healthier – so I hope these six tips help add a spring to your step! system, followed by the first initial trauma.
By Heenam Kim
First of all, I would like to thank you for the overwhelming responses, that I have received from the people who have read my previous article in the September/August issue. There are two different types of pains that we experience, one acute pain and one chronic pain. Acute pain is the body’s normal response to damage such as, a cut, infection or other physical injury. Those people who suffer from acute pain require available medical attention. But those who suffer from chronic pain, generally refer to intractable pain that exists for three or more months and does not resolve in response to medical treatment. Those chronic pains often originate by psychological problems, which I link with trapped emotions. People who are suffering from lower back pain often have linked childhood psychological trauma, such as physical abuse, emotional neglect, abuse or abandonment. Those horrific emotions strongly imprinted in their mind and they often re-live in unpleasant past traumatic experiences over and over and again.

Most of our negative emotions can be traced back to the prior experiences. Our belief system is created by expectations of our parents, teachers and our society. Especially as a child we seek validations from our parents and teachers, and our behavior changes accordingly. What we know and believe are not necessary the truth, it is only the conditional thoughts and belief, the feelings created by our prior experience and our society. Our behavior and belief system changes according to our prior experiences. So when we have negative and unpleasant experiences we suffer from that emotions created by those experiences. Consequently many of us living the life imprisoned by the negative belief system and suffer from this.

Not everyone can release their trapped emotions easily as him, but after even one session, the pain would reduce dramatically. After treating a number of people who suffer from chronic depression and anxiety, I find these symptoms are closely related to childhood sexual abuse. HERO BUS DRIVER SAVES LIFE 11th September 2017
Hero bus driver saves life A Bribie Island bus driver is being hailed a hero after bringing a man back to life who had collapsed as his bus arrived at the stop. At 6.45am, bus driver Andrew Formosa had started his usual morning run on the 642 (Bellara to Bongaree) route along Jabiru Street at Bribie Island when he saw an elderly man lying on his back at the bus stop. When the 51-year-old Bribie Island Coaches driver stopped the bus he realised the man was not breathing and called Triple Zero (000) the operator on speaker. With the ambulance on speakerphone, the heroic

condition and is now recovering in a stable condition in the RBWH.
Despite his instinctive actions Mr Formosa said he did not feel like a hero.
Member for Pumicestone Rick Williams said Mr Formosa would be recognised by TransLink for his quick-thinking and brave actions.
“My CPR training took over, I couldn’t just stand there,” Mr Formosa said. “I’m not a hero, I just went into automatic mode. “I feel a bit emotional now. I’m just thankful the training kicked in. “Bribie is a tight knit community and we look after our own.” When ambulance crews arrived, they praised the bus driver’s actions in the crucial first few minutes The man was taken to Caboolture hospital in a critical
“Mr Formosa’s heroic actions have saved a life and I sincerely thank him, Bribie Island Coaches and bus drivers throughout our community for their dedication,” Mr Williams said. “What an impressive effort which just goes to show the calibre of bus drivers we have right here in the heart of our local community. “Mr Formosa is a local hero – our community is all the better with Mr Formosa a part of it.”

MY FIRST YEAR WITH MODEL S By Chris Hedrick in America
One year ago today, I bought an electric car. Electric cars are coming for the masses, so I’d like to share a few thoughts about my first year of ownership in the event you’re considering one for yourself. I was excited about some aspects of a Model S (fast car, seating for seven, allwheel-drive, huge screen, better for the environment) and nervous about others (range, charging, Autopilot, cold weather, snow, and battery life). Charging at home We drive the car every time we leave the house, regardless of where we’re going or how many people are joining. We’ve put more than 16,000 miles on it. With 300 miles of range, charging is a never an issue. In 16,000 miles, I only had to stop to charge six times, four of which were on the same trip. I always charge at home. Range was a concern before I owned the car, but I found out that you just don’t drive more than 300 miles per day very often. At home, I charge when I sleep. I purchased and installed a
240V outlet for $150 in parts and two hours of my own labor. It charges at 30 miles of range per hour. You can buy something twice as fast for $500, but you don’t need it.
Tesla recommends you charge your car every night. That means every morning your car is fully charged. Who has more range anxiety, someone who looks at their gas gauge every time they get in their car, or someone who never thinks about it because it’s always full? Eventually, the battery will wear down, just like a cell phone or laptop. Tesla claims to have put batteries through 500,000 miles empty-to-full charges and the batteries still retained more than 80% of their capacity. I will never get there, but if I do, the battery has an infinite mile warranty, so I sleep soundly. Charging on the go Two dozen times we took weekend trips that in total, were more than 300 miles. Rather than stopping, I generally plugged my car into whatever outlet my destination had. This usually meant a regular 120V household plug, but also meant a bus outlet (once)
and an electric stove outlet (once). I also stayed at two hotels that offered electric vehicle charging (for free, of course). Again, none of these were necessary because there were always Tesla Superchargers on my route, but they allowed me to make a long trip without stopping often. I learned a lot about Superchargers, despite only using them six times. Superchargers are really fast. With a charge rate of more than 400 miles per hour, most stops fell between 1530 minutes. On long drives, it was just enough time to grab a bite to eat and stretch our legs, something we would have done anyway in a gas car. Superchargers are everywhere. I was surprised that not once was I unable to take a trip for lack of a place to charge. Not only that, but not once did I have to take a different route than I otherwise would have taken in a gas car. Tesla has done a great job putting Superchargers on primary travel routes, usually 100-200 miles apart, near restaurants and shopping centers. They’re built into the car’s GPS (Google maps), and the car automatically routes you through them and even calculates charge time. No Supercharger? No problem. There are nearly 40,000 public charging stations in the U.S., many of which are free, but all of which are significantly slower than a Supercharger.
My monthly gasoline expense dropped by $150/ month and my electric bill increased by $30/month, which means I saved about $1,500 this year. I also received a $7,500 tax credit (see: credit, not deduction). Even with those savings, however, Teslas are still expensive to buy. However, the cost of electric vehicles are dropping. I had an opportunity to visit Tesla’s new “Gigafactory” this year, where they hope to achieve economies of scale by producing more lithium batteries than the rest of the world combined. If and when that happens in a few years, the costs will drop dramatically. No service needed, is great service Service was non-existent. My only service was, and forever will be, tire rotations. With no fluids and very few moving parts in the car, there’s nothing to service. There’s no engine and no transmission. Electric cars have something called regenerative braking, which means that when you take your foot off the gas pedal, the car converts the kinetic energy of your forward motion to potential energy in the battery. Not only does this increase your range, but it also slows the car down, preventing you from needing to press your brake pedal, and therefore you’ll never need brakes, or at least not for many hundreds of thousands of miles. Tire rotations, like most services, are free. Tesla comes to your place or work, picks your car up and gives you a loaner. Teslas have allwheel-drive, but wanting to get the most out of my car, I purchased winter tires for the first time in my life. Not only did Tesla install them for free despite me purchasing them from a third party website, but they stored (and continue to store) my off-season tires, you guessed it, for free.
thebribieislander Snow driving with electric all-wheel drive Though we had a mild winter, the snow tires worked great, as did the all-wheel-drive. It’s the best car I’ve ever driven in the snow, but I can’t say if that’s because of the snow tires or the AWD. Tesla claims that their cars have superior AWD because their cars have two separate motors (one on the front axle and one on the rear) rather than the mechanical linkage of traditional cars. The other benefit of no mechanical linkage is that there’s no hump down the center of your floor. The middle seat is cool again. The colder the weather, the less range you get. It’s not linear, so you’re pretty good down to freezing. I’d estimate you get 5% less range for every 10 degrees it drops below freezing. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, batteries don’t perform as well in severe cold (they drain faster). Second, heat in gas cars is essentially free. Once your
engine warms up, simply pass air over it to warm up your cabin. With no engine, electric cars have electric heat, which consumes a lot of power. The upside is that your car can generate hot air as soon as you get in it, rather than waiting for your engine to warm up. The other good news is that because Tesla places their Superchargers 100-200 miles apart, even zero-degree weather won’t keep you from reaching your destination, although you may have to make an extra stop.

Safe for seven Our family is growing. Safety, seating, and storage are important to us. Model S is designed to be the safest car on the road due to its low center of gravity and large crumple zone (with no engine). As Elon puts it, if you were to jump into a pool from a high place, you would want the pool to be as deep as possible, and not have rocks in it. We purchased the third-row seating option, which allows you to seat two additional children facing backwards. Because the seats face backwards and have a five-point harness, they’re the safest seats in the car and qualify as legal car seats for children. For peace of mind, Tesla double-reinforces the rear bumper when you select the third-row option. Our oldest daughter loves sitting in the back with her friends, and mom and dad love it too. With 63 cubit feet of cargo volume, Model S has more storage capacity than some SUVs.
Ludicrous speed Probably the most welldocumented part of a Tesla is its acceleration. My car isn’t the fastest model (which has since gone on to be the fastest car in the world), but it’s still the fastest car I and most of my passengers have ever been in. When a gas car has a stated horsepower, that occurs when the engine is redlining. Most people never achieve it and if they do, it’s long after they hit the gas. Electric cars have instant power.
The best part; Autopilot Finally, Autopilot. It’s everything Tesla claimed it would be. It’s the best part of the car and I totally wasn’t expecting it to be. Working as an engineer in the automotive industry, I’ve learned not to expect much from automakers. Every year is more of the same and innovation only happens when the government requires it (see: headlights, windshield wipers, rear view mirrors, seat belts, airbags, anti-lock brakes, dynamic stability control, fuel economy, the list goes on).
Now we have a true American car company (and the only one who doesn’t currently owe the government any money) doing something special. Autopilot isn’t perfect yet, but it’s already more than twice as safe as a human driver. The future looks bright. After one year of ownership, I can’t say enough good things. It’s not a perfect car, but it’s the closest thing to it by an order of magnitude. Whether you order a Model S, X, or the upcoming massmarket Model 3, you won’t be disappointed.
