Living the Dream Part 3
By Richard Whetlor
O
n my visit to Solana this time I met Ross and Pam Shannon who have only moved into their new home nine weeks ago. The newbies originally from Gympie had lived on the Gold Coast for 27 years and then back to Gympie and then they decided to downsize and chose Solana after looking around at a lot of various properties. Ross and Pam were fruit farmers for many years or “fruit goers” as Ross said. They had one and a quarter acre and he told me some tales of growing

fruit, the storms and the ups and downs, hard bloody graft, it sounds like a tough gig to me. Ross and Pam told me that they looked at Noosa and Gympie and they were all beautiful places with lovely facilities but overpriced for them to downsize too. They have a son in Brisbane and a daughter in Gympie so their position is great, the half way point so the kids can come and see them on beautiful Bribie! Ross worked nearly 18 years ago here on the island in the water treatment facility so he was already familiar

COMMUNITY BIDCA Cheque presentation “It is heart-warming that so many local people including the BIDCA workers and local groups and individual artists gave their time and expertise to make this event a wonderful success for the community,” Bribie’ Neighourhood Centre Manager, Cecelia Taylor, said when presented with the cheque by BIDCA’s Gary Parsons.” The Neighbourhood Centre will distribute the funds through its Emergency Relief program to help those who are struggling with, or at risk of, homelessness.”
MUSIC FESTIVAL RAISES ESSENTIAL FUNDS On Wednesday 6th November, Bribie Island District Community Appeal (BIDCA) presented the Bribie Island and
District Neighbourhood Centre with at cheque for $1700, following BIDCA’s Music Festival on 26th October.
Twelve local artists donated their time to this very worthy cause. The event was also attended by the MBRC Division 1 Councillor Brook Savige, State Member Simone Wilson and Member for Longman, Terry Young. Event organiser, Neil Wilson, said that the event was hailed as a huge success by everybody who attended. All who attended expressed that they were very keen for the event to be held again next year, and Neil Wilson assures us it will be even bigger and better in 2020!

BELLARA, BRIBIE ISLAND The Bellara arcade is located at the 2nd driveway after the roundabout as you come off the Bribie bridge. It’s been home to many local famous businesses over the decades. Starting with Leading appliances at the very front, formerly known as Retravision. Warrick and Jenny have been helping locals with their electrical and white goods and much more for over 2 decades. Then we have Bellara news and convenience where Daryl and Gayle have a shop full of not just your newsagency items but lots of special gifts and also are an agent for all your dry cleaning needs. Donna has relocated the Bleach Shack hair salon back into the arcade where her mother originally had her salon more than 30 years ago, And within the salon she has Karen giving her massages. Krystal has her beauty salon which is very relaxing and offering cosmetic tattooing and all your beauty treatments. And at the very back of the arcade Matthew and Rachelle have extended their air conditioned 24 hour gym Ultim8fitness which looks fantastic. The entire arcade is all family owned and run businesses which have been very supportive of local events over the years. I definitely encourage everyone to visit the arcade and support these awesome businesses.

special needs they may have. These awards portray them as children who have successfully overcome additional barriers which they face in this world.
The benefits to the child from receiving the award include acting as an encouragement for their future helping them to believe in themselves and helping to increase their self-worth. Livinia Curley with her winning entry. Theme this year: Journey of Peace. The families also benefit from the award by sharing in their child’s pride and the recognition of how these children have overcome the many hardships that they face on a day-to-day basis. The Lions Children of Courage Awards were first initiated in 1983 by Western Australian Lions. These awards were introduced to this district Q3 by Lions Club of Toowoomba and Lioness Club of Redcliffe in 2002 Bribie Lions have been taking part since then. The Local children who received this award were nominated by Bribie Island State Primary School and Banksia Beach State School. Special guests at the ceremony were Dianne Unwin (Children of Courage District Chairperson), Councillor Brooke Savige and teachers from both Schools. Bribie Island Lions sponsored the Lions International Peace Poster Contest. This is a wonderful opportunity for Lions to work with youth in
their community to promote peace, tolerance and international understanding. It encourages young people, ages 11 to 13, to think about peace, creatively express what it means to them and share their unique visions with the world. History has shown that all too often Peace is not guaranteed, while this is unfortunate, it also allows us the powerful opportunity to figure out how to achieve Peace, individually and in our communities, and who better to map out the “Journey of Peace” than our youth. Bribie Island State Primary arts students under the guidance of art teacher Cheryl Thornley had 93 entries taking part in the contest. The winner this year was grade six student Livinia Curley. This winning entry will now go on to the Multi District Council Chairperson for judging Australia wide the winner then to Lions International in America.

RENEWABLE ENGERGY
BASELOAD POWER… it’s not what you think... by Tony Longford
W
hen talk turns to whether we should get our electricity from renewable sources or from coal, one statement almost invariably comes up – “renewables can’t supply baseload power.” It implies that “baseload power” is the minimum amount of power required, at any given time, by all consumers. However, that’s not what it means at all.
and has no application in the broader energy debate. Coal-fired power generators are slow and cumbersome
The term “baseload”, as used in the power industry, means the lowest level of output a generator can run at, before automatically switching off. It applies only to coalfired power generators,
– they can take four to five days to rev up from zero to a working level. They can take several hours to move
to a higher or lower speed. This means they can’t suddenly accelerate to meet a spike in demand, nor can
Figure 1: Baseload is not a factor in deciding the output of a generator.

they slow down to meet a sudden drop-off. Instead, they are run at a constant speed, 24 hours a day. Think of it like the cruising speed of a car on the highway – it’s not the fastest the car can go, but it’s not tootling along at 40kph either. Instead, drivers (sensible ones, anyway) go at a speed that takes into account safety, economy and their schedule – within the speed limit, of course! So if, for example, a power generator’s optimum rate (cruising speed) produces 30 megawatts (Mw) of power, that’s what it does all day – regardless of the power required by consumers. If there is a spike in demand, it can’t speed up, and if there’s a drop in demand, it can’t slow down. So on a typical day, if the demand is only for 15 Mw,
Figure 2: A renewable power system is flexible enough to deal with fluctuations in demand. the generator is producing 30 Mw (excess power is either stored or it’s wasted). When the demand is for 45 Mw, the generator is only producing 30 Mw, and extra power needs to come from storage or flexible sources such as gas, hydro or wind. With a grid run fully on renewables though, there
You can now pay your bills instore
is much more flexibility – power can brought on line, or taken off, in seconds rather than hours. Just recently, renewables provided more than 50% of the grid’s power. Only for a few minutes, sure – but then the current renewables capacity is pretty small. As more renewable’s infrastructure is built,
the capacity of the grid to supply as much power as is needed, on demand, will continue to improve. Whatever your opinion about how we should get our electricity, it should be based on fact, not a misunderstanding about the meaning of “baseload” power.

ROTARY
Rotary Traditions and History – a Reflection! By Anne Matthews PR Director Bribie Rotary
T
here is currently much debate occurring in Rotary regarding the value of traditions and whether they matter in our modern world. Membership numbers are stagnated and we are not attracting younger members. Many believe this is due to our old-fashioned traditions and style. To me, however, ‘Traditions’ represent an important part of our culture and are the foundations of our society. If we ignore our traditions, we risk losing our identity. Notwithstanding this, we must also learn to adapt and welcome new ideas. Welcome new members – especially younger members. Bribie Rotary is ageing and can only survive by attracting new, and younger, members. Rotary traditions include a Classification system, a motto, a Four Way Test and the symbol, the Rotary Wheel. It is a nonreligious and non-political service Club.
Classification System Rotary’s founder Paul Harris was a lawyer. When he started the organisation, in Chicago, in 1905, his idea was to bring people together to learn how other trades and professions worked and thought. He introduced a classification system for 24
each member according to their profession. Founding members were Paul Harris, Lawyer; Silvester Schiele, Coal merchant; Gustavus Loehr, Mining engineer; and Hiram Shorey, Merchant tailor. Bribie Rotary still maintains the tradition, and for me it is always a talking point when meeting new members. For example, who could ever forget, the late, great Ira Quirke, whose classification was Eschatology!
Origin of the Rotary Name Paul Harris named the new club ‘Rotary’ because members met in “rotation” at their various places of business.
Motto The first motto of Rotary International, ‘He Profits Most Who Serves Best’, was approved at the second Rotary Convention, held in Portland, Oregon, in 1911. The phrase was first stated by a Chicago Rotarian, Art Sheldon. At about the same time, Ben Collins, president of the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, Minnesota, commented that the proper way to organise a Rotary club was through the principle his club had adopted – ‘Service, Not Self’. In 1989 ‘Service Above Self’ was established as the principal motto of Rotary, because it best explained the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service.

Founding members were (from Left) Gustavus Loehr Mining engineer, Silvester Schiele - Coal merchant, Hiram Shorey - Merchant tailor and Paul Harris - Lawyer.
The Four Way Test One of the most widely quoted statements of business ethics in the world is the Rotary Four Way Test. It was created by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor in 1932 and was adopted by Rotary in 1943. In 1954-55 when Herb Taylor became Rotary International President he donated the copyright to the organisation. We ask ‘Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?’
The Rotary Wheel The first wheel design was made in 1905 by Montague Bear, a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago who was also an engraver. The wheel was said to illustrate ‘Civilisation, Movement and Service’ work in action. In 1922, it was decided that all Rotary clubs should adopt a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians. So In 1923 the present gear wheel with 24 clogs and
six spokes was adopted by the ’Rotary International Association.’ In 1923 the keyway was added to the wheel to signify the wheel was a “worker and not an idler.” The keyway in the centre of the hub represents the individual Rotarian member, the key factor in every club. The gear teeth around the outside of the wheel represent the fact that work is to be done. The six spokes represent the inner direction and path of Rotary’s Vocational Service system. The spokes represent an outward distribution path of Rotary’s ideals of service and the Four Way Test. At the 1929 Rotary International Convention,
When Paul Harris died on 27 January 1947, Rotary had grown from an informal meeting of
So, as you can see, Rotary traditions have meaning and are important. Because of our traditions we leave our political views and differences outside the meeting room and come together to do good in the World. In my view, sadly, it is not the traditions that are stopping this wonderful Service Organisation from growing. Rather, reasons for non-growth include lack of time to volunteer; resistance of current members to new ideas, or reluctance to change; lack of information sharing and publicity; and a sense that the club is not diverse, equal and inclusive of all cultures, experience and identities. I believe many

it was determined that blue and gold would be the official colours of the organisation, so the wheel was designed with these colours. The four blue bands within the outer radius of the gear represent our four “avenues” of service. The ‘avenues’ refer to the four elements of the Object of Rotary - Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service and International Service. The design which we now know was formally adopted as the official Rotary International emblem. Today, the Rotary Wheel is recognised throughout the World as the symbol of Rotary. It is also referred to as ‘The Mark of Excellence.’

A READER’S STORY By Elaine Lutton
Froggy Fables
I
n the early days, when Don and I were living in the old beach house, the only sanitation we had was a thunderbox or dunny. After use, one sprinkled sawdust and some phenol liquid over the wood shavings. Every so often, the night soil men would come around and empty the can that contained all our offerings. Not a job I envied.
Arrival Part VIII
There were no frogs, just red-backed spiders, and other insect life. Remember I was pregnant at this time and needed to make that trips to the dunny fairly frequently. It was quite a shock to the system for a gently brought up lass from England used to flushing
lavatories. My husband took pity on me, and once a day would drive me down to the nearest set of public toilets where I could sit in confidence, taking as long as I liked, and when the job was completed, end with a glorious, civilised, flush! Don decided that the time had come for our sanitation to be modernised, not only for me, but also for his mother who enjoyed the primitive arrangements no more than I did. He decided to install an indoor toilet which was to be connected to a septic tank. What joy! The men came and did all the hard work and we felt we were living in splendour. We even had an indoor shower installed. We had a proper functioning bathroom! The septic tank still had to be periodically pumped out but that was not our worry; there were

professionals whose job it was to do that. All was well while we were living in the house and using the bathroom regularly, but when Don gained employment we could only return to our beloved Bribie at weekends. We soon learned that Don’s first job was to remove the large green frog sitting under the rim of the toilet bowl. He was ready to greet us every time we returned. The removal of our Froggy friend did not worry Don one jot. He would put on a pair of large pink rubber gloves and gently lift our amphibian friend from the toilet before liberating him/ her to the outside. The frog would not re-appear during the weekend but would be sure to be waiting to greet us the following week. Our human friends assured us that Froggy was getting in through the pipes from the septic tank and was nothing to worry about. Indeed our young children became quite fond of Froggy and looked forward to the weekly ritual. A few years later, thanks to Mr Clem Jones, the Lord Mayor of Brisbane at the time, proper pipes were laid, connecting us to the main sewage system. For a not inconsiderable sum, we
were able to be completely modernised but alas, we lost the visits of our Froggy friend who was banished permanently to the outside. Our children were devastated by the loss of their friend and on one occasion smuggled him into the house to watch the process of scone making. They were sprung, and sternly told to take him outside immediately and return for some vigorous hand-washing. We missed Froggy for years until the house catastrophe; (see last fortnights’ Arrival,) when he decided to pay me a condolence visit. There he was, gazing at me in a most sympathetic manner from his usual place in the toilet. Whilst appreciating his kindness, I did wonder how he was to be set free as Don was no longer with me. Well, like so many things I have had to manage by myself, this was just one more. The pink gloves were put on, the door opened, and appreciative and comforting words spoken so as not to frighten my friend. He was thanked for his visit but gently placed outside. It was suggested to him that the yard was the proper place for frogs and handsome though he was, perhaps that is where he should remain.

Wills Just a reminder to make sure you have a current will or a reminder to make one. If you die without leaving a will, then you die intestate and having left no valid instructions on how your estate gets divided up or whom you wish to be the executor(s), your estate would be organised by the Public Trustee. Having a will can ensure that your estate is paid out to only those friends and/or relatives whom you have nominated. Someone who is close to you but not necessarily related may miss out on receiving a share of your estate if you do not have a will but wanted to leave them something from your estate. Charities you were going to leave money to would miss out without a will setting out their provisions. Unfortunately, death is a part of life so procrastinating about it and thinking of doing it one day could result in unnecessary trauma should your unexpected death occur. Anyone who has assets of any size should make a will. Especially when you turn 18 or more and are of legal age. Sorry is this a misprint did I say China, the country that has taken over as the producer of just about everything in the world, a nation also known for producing fake everything, and the country Donald Trump hates is starting to produce premium wines, OMG! For some years now the larger wineries from around the globe have been investing in wine production in China and now the wines they are producing are starting to catch on in China who have taken to drinking wine in much the same way as the Japanese did a few years ago especially the new wealthy business sector who like to flaunt their success by drinking high end spirits or top end wines especially in the company of other successful

Initially high end wines from France especially from Bordeaux and Australia with Penfolds being very sort after were the flavour of the day but it was only a matter of time before they started to make their own wines, they are also investing in wineries here in Australia. Chateau Lafite Rothschild of Bordeaux was one of the original four producers to obtain first growth status in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification for producing wines of extreme quality and in 2010 the company broke the world record at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong when three bottles of the 1869 vintages were sold for over $330,000 collectively. This success led to the production of nearly 10,000 bottles of counterfeit Chateau Lafite Rothschild which were seized in the city of Wenzhou in 2012 a problem which has also beset Penfolds especially with their Grange, so when a Chinese made 2017

To avoid counterfeiting top end producers such as Chateau Lafite Rothschild and Penfolds are now putting special computer chips within the label and the home grown wines are giving the Chinese wine consumer a growing sense of national pride when a wine that could even grace the tables of fine wine drinkers around the world can be produced in their own back yard. Chateau Lafite Rothschild have produced 2500 cases
By Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au of Long Dai compared to the 16,000 cases produced in France, but you have to start somewhere. My friend Russel mentioned that around 6 years or so ago he was dining in a fine restaurant in China and asked to see the wine list. The wine person brought a computer tablet to the table which as he thumbed through the various pages showing point of origin, country and region, a description of the wine and the price occurred to him how far ahead they were with this technology. We had the same experience at the Aureole Restaurant at The Mandalay Hotel in Las Vegas some 15 years ago when we chose the degustation menu off the tablet but then we watched the theatre unfold as the wine server harnessed herself and literally flew up to the wine cellar in the sky to retrieve our selection from about 10 metres up the wall, some things one never forgets.
As Christmas and New Year approaches I thought I would give you a list of some of my favourite wines I have tried this year and in previous years so if you are looking for something different then something here may tempt you, however they may not all be available on the Island and it is unlikely BWS or Liquorland will try to match the prices of their larger stores at Dan Murphy’s or First Choice Liquor, but depending on quantity you need and the ability to drive the distance than sometimes when buying locally you just have to pay a few dollars more, but both companies do offer a delivery service and it may be worth checking out the final cost. It also amazes me that at the one time of the year when consumers are going to buy more products producers go crazy with discounts to get your

Dog Attacks in Moreton Bay Region In the last few weeks there have been reports about dog attacks in the area. Mayor Alan Sutherland is looking at ways to address this problem. Unfortunately there is no one, simple answer. Heavy fines, banning certain breeds are not necessary deterrents or quick fixes. Euthanasia, of course, will solve the problem with that dog. So, what is the answer? 1. Understanding the behaviour and drive of the dog
2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Ever wondered why Christmas is so stressful? Our pets demonstrate one answer. In the wild state, it is natural for our dogs and cats to grow up close to their brothers and sisters until they reach maturity (with

the odd tussle here or there but nothing serious). At that point it is natural for them to disagree and to go their separate way, thus dispersing the family genes and reducing the chances of inbreeding. This is evolution at work. It also helps to explain why it is sometimes difficult and can sometimes be uncomfortable to spend a lot of time in close quarters with your brothers and sisters, such as over the Christmas holidays.

This whole area is a habitat and feeding zone for marine turtles and dugongs which are already at risk and under severe stress. It is adjacent to one of Moreton Bays feeding grounds and roosting sites for migratory and indigenous seabirds. native Australian species which will be continually harvested and with the intention of being processed locally. The proponents are in the process of exploring interest in this multi-million dollar project from both local and international investors. Below are the main concerns expressed by the local residents at the above meeting: • The installation of 900 or more large and protruding posts with several kilometres of plastic ropes and other plastic infrastructure which may create an extensive visual impact on this Marine Park. • The potential hazards to navigation and leisure activities and risks of entanglement and other impacts on marine turtles and dugongs. • What will be the impact of all this plastic rope and other rubbish if it breaks free during storm events or high winds and washes up on our shore. Who will be responsible of cleaning this up? • What arrangements will be in place to completely remove and dispose of this infrastructure if the project is abandoned for any reason in the future? • Risk of Lyngbya contamination. This area already suffers from seasonal outbreaks of Lyngbya (Blue green algea). There are questions as to how this will effect and further compound this issue. • The seaweed farm will shade the existing native seagrass seabed and result in the reduction of this important natural food source and habitats for marine creatures, including dugongs and turtles.
• This area is where a lot of fish is caught by both professional and amateur fishermen. Is this yet another area which will be closed to the fishermen with resulting loss of local jobs? • Noise and potential disturbance from continual boat and truck traffic servicing the area. • The current natural and undeveloped image of the marine environment is an important factor in why many choose to live here. The loss of amenity to local residents, fishers and local recreational boat traffic and damage to the natural image of the region which the project will produce will impact the desirability of this area and its property values. We are concerned that the Queensland Government appears to be fast tracking the approval of the project which may have significant impact in the Moreton Bay Marine Park. The proposers and government have not consulted with the local community which is why our organisation stepped in and call this meeting. We were informed that the company had submitted an environment impact statement to the Queensland Government but we have been told that we can’t see this as it is ‘commercial in confidence’. We call upon the Queensland government to immediately halt the approval process and follow proper and respectful process including consulting with the local community and other interest groups and individuals. We would also request the release of all impact assessments and risk analysis for our examination.

Quantum Physics and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) Therapy By Heenam Kim

y name is Heenam Kim and I’m an EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) therapist. I believe many of us are ill and in pain due to emotional imbalances. I call it an emotional virus or emotional debris. By neutralizing the negative emotions and belief, physical and mental illnesses can be improved dramatically. The mind is central to our health and our disease. Since the advent of quantum physics, there is a new understanding of the relationship between matter and energy. Quantum physics indicates the chemistry of our blood is adjusted by the way we perceive life. If we feel the love in our presence the brain releases oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin into the blood. These chemicals promote the health and vitality of the body. In the other hand if we are stressed and feel threatened or scared the brain releases a completely different set of chemicals into the blood. Cortisol is a stress hormone produced by the adrenal glands. When cortisol levels are too high for too long it will cause chronic complications including high blood pressure, type 2 Diabetes and Osteoporosis; weight gain, tiredness, 42

So, we drastically need something better. Therefore, people are seeking alternative and integrative medicine because they are getting results.
The remarkable discoveries about the bio-field and genetic behaviour, one of the most extraordinary new fields of research focus on how our emotions affect our health and consciousness. Every thought is changing our emotions and every emotional expression is rewiring our brain. When you have a profound emotional trigger, every single receptor in your body shifts. And that emotion is felt all over the entire body/mind. The atoms are energy vortices. They are like little miniature tornadoes; every atom is a vibrational field. The significance of this is that when we look at the body through the new scan systems, such as PET scans and CAT scans and MRI scans. They are looking at the energy profiles of our body. Not the physical expression of it. In quantum physics, the energy can be adjusted by other energy, rather than through chemistry. Research has now revealed that energy information signals are 100 times more efficient in controlling biology than our chemical (pharmaceutical products) signals. The result is we will move away from the pharmaceutical pursuit

L
eaden Flycatchers are reasonably common on Bribie and surrounds and most likely to be encountered in woodlands in mid to upper canopies during the summer months. They are small active, passerine birds at 14-17cm in length a little smaller than Willy Wagtails. Their weight is just 11-14g which is just a little larger than two teaspoons of sugar. Males have dark blue-grey breasts and heads with small crests. Underparts are white. Females are quite different being grey-brown above and rufousorange on the throat and breast. Their tails are long and when perched are continually quivering. Their calls are frequent whistling sounds and can be confused with Satin Flycatchers which are not common in our area. Juveniles are similar to females but are paler in colour. Most often they forage alone but sometimes operate in pairs. Usually they are seen in open forests, at the edge of rainforests and often
venture inland following the river courses. In Australia they are found across the north, down the east coast to South Australia and into Tasmania. They are migratory in the south, but their actual movements are not well known. They are also found in PNG and Indonesia. Small insects and flies picked from foliage and taken in the air are their main food source (hence the name Flycatcher). Around their bills are small bristles which act as censors and help in the capture of their prey. Breeding takes place usually between August and February. Nests are normally built on horizontal branches in exposed areas in large trees in the forest. Often there is an overhanging branch just above to give protection. Nests are cup-like and are made of bark or lichen and woven together with cobwebs. They are cleverly built to resemble the host branch, so the nests are extremely hard to find as they resemble knobs on the wood. Clutches of 2-3 white eggs with motley strips are laid. Both parents share the
nest duties and rearing of the young. The mortality rate is very high with only a 23% success rate. Only one brood is produced each year. Flycatchers are very hard to identify as some species are quite similar. The Satin and Broad-billed Flycatchers are very much like the Leaden. Satin Flycatchers are very rare visitors to our area while Broad-billed are confined to the far north so that it is highly unlikely but not impossible that you would see these species on Bribie Island. Leaden Flycatchers were first described by John Latham in 1801. John Latham was an English physician and ornithologist who was known as the Grandfather of Australian Ornithology. Specimens were sent to him from Australia which he examined and documented. Threats to the Leaden Flycatcher are loss of habitat, bushfires and the usual dangers to wild birds such as reptiles and feral cats. Their conservation status is secure for now.

Grass Trigger Plant - Stylidium graminifolium
By Marj Webber
A
truly amazing perennial herb is the Grass Trigger Plant. It is called a Trigger Plant because the flower actually has a trigger in the form of its club-shaped stamen which extends from the throat of the flower. This is bent downwards and when an insect lands it sets off a spring-like action and sprays the insect with pollen. The insect then flies to other plants spreading the pollen. Only the Stylidium species have this trigger mechanism. The trigger sets itself and
is cocked ready to operate again within 20-60 minutes. People are able to activate this action by touching the trigger with a small object and watching the response. Trigger Plants are hardy, quite drought resistant and grow in low nutrient, sandy soils in sunny areas and quickly rejuvenate after a fire. They have thin grasslike leaves and butterflyshaped pink flowers with five petals on tall spikes up to 75cm with up to 25 flowers on each. Four of the petals are visible while the fifth is small and tucked behind the trigger and out

graminifolium was one of only four Stylidium species collected by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander.
There are 130 species of Stylidium in the world with most to be found in Australia. Three species occur on Bribie Island and surrounding areas with graminifolium being the most common. They are widespread in Australia being found along coastal wallum areas and dry forests up to the mountains.
Stylidium is from the Greek Stylos referring to the stamens. Graminifolium is from the Latin gramineus which means grass-like and folium meaning a leaf.
During Captain Cook’s voyage up the east coast of Australia Stylidium
Trigger Plants are not considered at risk but as for all wild flowers much of their habitat is being developed. Sizable areas of the wonderful wildflower growing areas on Bribie Island have now gone and are covered by houses.

The Bribie Islander
This was a man named Bill Shirley who had come to Bribie to supervise clearing of the first road on the island, from the Jetty to the Ocean Beach in 1923, by the Brisbane Tug and Steamship Company. In those days Bribie was largely a “Company Town” being the private enterprise of the Tug Company who leased land on the island and developed the basic infrastructure to make the island a successful tourist destination. Their regular Steamships made excursion trips from Brisbane via Redcliffe to Bribie, bringing thousands of tourists and visitors to this island paradise. Bill Shirley and his family recognised the potential and he converted
construction trucks to basic buses to transport visitors across to the surf beach, and even up the beach if the tide was low. His family then ran a large Guest House at the Ocean

meeting and keeping comprehensive minutes. Bribie Historical Society were recently gifted the “Minute Book” for the association for the year 1980/81, and it contained some fascinating “issues” related to that time almost 40 years ago. Shirley Creek Bridge opened 1935 beach, he acquired several properties and became a prominent member of the small but growing resident community. He was appointed as the first “Honorary Councillor” of Bribie Island on the Caboolture Shire Council in 1933. To attend a brief monthly Council meeting in Caboolture was at least a two-day trip for Bill. By steamship to Brisbane, then a train to Caboolture, overnight stay in Brisbane or Caboolture, then steamship back to Bribie the next day. He did this in an honorary capacity, with no payment other than his travel costs. He is remembered in the
name of “Shirley Creek” near the Caravan Park, and the original small wooden bridge over that creek was the very first item of Council infrastructure on the island. The 1930’s was the decade of mass “Excursion” tourism by Steam Ships from Brisbane to Bribie, when thousands of people came at weekends and holidays to enjoy the simple pleasures of the island. As the resident population of Bribie grew over the years, all sorts of Clubs, Groups, Societies and Associations were formed as a focus for the many sporting, creative and social interest groups. The whole community of Bribie, both residents and visitors,
were very committed to doing whatever they could to improve the unique “experience” of Bribie Island. They achieved so much with the encouragement and support of Council, doing their own fundraising and just getting things done themselves. After the Bribie Bridge was built in 1963 the population grew slowly, and by the 1980’s it was still only about 7000 people. By then Bribie Island had three Councillors representing their interests on the Caboolture Shire Council, who personally understood and were involved in the concern for local issues. Councillors regularly attended many of the different community organisations monthly meetings. The Bribie Island Ratepayers & Progress Association was one of the most active of these community groups at that time, holding a monthly
I have extracted just a few short examples of the sort issues that were being discussed and minutes recorded at these meetings. • Proposal to construct a “Water Fun Park” using sea water pumped from Dux Creek for water slides, toddlers Pool, Pirate Ship and maybe a roller skating rink. (Note…A Fun Land Water Park was later built on the corner of Goodwin Drive and Cotterill Ave.) • A proposal by the Council to have entry to Welsby Parade from the Bridge as a NO RIGHT TURN in future. • The Council to make calculated judgement on all proposed development, as the original Town Plan did not require provision for High Rise, and the revised Town Plan of 1977 divided the area into Low, Medium and High Density. HISTORY CONTINUED • Huge areas of land on Forestry lease have sought to “Develop” this land after harvesting of timber. Caboolture Shire seek to obstruct this to ensure the land is returned to the people at the termination of the leases. • Strongly held personal objection to the manner in which the new light Industry area had been totally bulldozed on First Ave. • Concern expressed about Councillors statement that “Council matters were a matter of confidentiality not the right of ratepayers to be made aware of Council business” • Concern about decreasing sub surface water in Banksia Beach area, to the detriment of local flora, since the
development of the deep “Lakes” in the Solander development. • Could the usage and destruction of the beach by 4WD vehicles could be limited. Permits were issued by Council who recognise that traffic must affect the beach Eco system. Council could stop this abuse, but it would be most difficult. • Letter written to Queensland Premier and various Ministers objecting to the proposed development of a Pulp Mill on Bribie Island. • Consideration be given to lowering the existing 100 Klm/Hr speed limit between the Bridge and the Caravan Park. • Suggestion that a charge be placed on visiting vehicles using the Boat Ramp Picnic and Parking areas.
• Possible conversion of the Caravan Park in Welsby Parade to public Park land. • A recent survey of the permanent population of Bribie Island shows a total of 6,619, of which 1,368 are Pensioners. • It was thought that Bribie should now have more than the current 3 Councillors representing them on Caboolture Shire Council. I must make it clear that the above dot points are just a small selection of items discussed and minutes recorded at the meetings.

They did not necessarily eventuate or even have credibility at the time. However, it is interesting to read these items, to appreciate just how involved the Councill and community
were in a variety of issues, that were openly discussed and considered by the Councillors who represented them.

HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY
Peter O’toole And The ‘Prince’
By Helly Kemp
W
ithin seconds of entering, the elegant Hampstead London house, familiarly piercing eyes command me to follow up to the top floor, where, in true LAWRENCE OF ARABIA fashion, the 4-year-old captor mock-decapitates a teddy bear, booming unafraid, “You did want to see my nursery, didn’t you! Master Lorcan O’Toole. Son of Peter. If ever there was a chip off the old block: that roguish smile, the mop of blonde hair, the fair skin, those same blue eyes and that resonant voice, inconceivable in one so young, ringing out, “Now, you must meet Mr. Peach!” Tornado-like, Lorcan hurtles back down several flights of stairs, popping out with and gaining momentum on Mr. Peach, his multi-directionalrobot-ride-on-car, dashing this way and that, gathering up the Persian hall rug under its wheels, until the robot’s arms fasten onto an ankle in a doorway.
And there he stands, 54-year-old PETER O’TOOLE, one of the greatest British actors of all time, all 6’4” of him, still the same beanpole of a man I last met 13 years ago. The middle-age spread has passed him by, his silver hair no longer dyed blonde as it was in his forties, when he described himself “as grey as an old fox.” His boldly-striped yellow-green-red-grey tie seems unusually loud for this now quiet and gentle man, but tones in well with his dark sports jacket and fawn trousers.
And no longer the bad boy, only happy in rowdy, inebriated, smoke-filled rooms, the giant stork has survived in spite of himself, his private life being nothing like the roaring lion and madman he so often portrays on screen and stage, which he himself describes as “my attraction to larger than life roles the same way they are attracted to me.” I feel both amazed and privileged having been invited into the sanctum of this most private man, from which most people are excluded. So why am I here? Within seconds, his eyes revealing his thoughts, I realize it is Peter’s deep seated need to display the charms and talents of the

In His 50’S son he is so passionately proud of, the baby he attempted to kidnap during legal custody restrictions with Lorcan’s mother, American model Karen Brown, his partner after Peter’s 1979 divorce. But the venture to bring Lorcan in his carry-cot plus nanny back to the U.K. via Bermuda had failed at the airport. Nowadays they share joint custody, with Lorcan currently staying three months with his dad in London. Momentarily the stutter Peter had as a youngster returns, as he explains softly, but still with that staccato voice: “We d.. d.. do alright. We are very close. He’s a grand little boy and time goes so quick. I miss him a lot when he’s not here. But we have our compensations. It is a good balance. I’m not very good at discussing these
private little matters. I’m sure you’ll understand. Would you like a jujube?” He pulls out a little metal tin of sweets from his trouser pocket, passing them across with his long sensitive fingers, less nailbitten now than they were years ago. Is it a sign of greater peace of mind? Once the only place on earth he could find that peace was in his beloved Ireland home with his horses, gardens and books. “No, I can find it here now in this house where I have lived for 26 years. But I love them both equally. Maybe Lorcan prefers the cottage. We have such wonderful times there, like last summer. He goes wild in the big fields there, the beaches, the sea. He really enjoys his childhood. At four, he can ride, swim,
REGULAR FEATURE insisted Peter smelled like a French train), and although you can’t doubt his sincerity, the actor never totally disappears, every word thought out, mentally rehearsed, written all over his face before he speaks.
As Lawrence Of Arabia jump into the sea, climb, play cricket, play rugby…..It’s so exciting to watch him grow up. We play all the things every dad and son play. We enjoy games, we read, we adventure. Lorcan is beginning to read himself now. So the obvious answer is to give him a book. But he also loves toys and the robot car Father Christmas brought him. Come and have a look!” We leave the silver-grey Venetian drawing room to the adjacent master bedroom, and there at the foot of the gigantic bed lie dozens of children’s books from nursery rhymes to Grimm’s’ fairy tales and Renard the Fox. So the little rascal, maybe affected by the tug of love across two continents, has really tamed the old tiger, who now describes himself as “tottering into antiquity,” and Lorcan has even accentuated O’Toole’s incomparable charisma, with that new lease of an energetic life with this bright and talented child. He waves about his long cigarette holder, complete with a French Gauloises cigarette (Sian always
“I want to give Lorcan a happy childhood and a sense of enthusiasm and adventure. That’s all. I try to teach him to be as independent as possible as soon as possible. I will let him climb up a stool and watch him fall of, rather than telling him not to climb up. Then I can show him how not fall off next time.” Leaning back disappearing into his chair, all arms and legs and thinness, he smiles wryly, clenches both hands at the back of his head, pauses and changes the subject, declaring dramatically:
With Wife Karen “Besides, the love you receive from and give to a small child is a most fulfilling experience. Maybe it’s time for the pearls!”

Our VMR BBQ chefs (Ron Burrett, Graham Patrick, Garry Bunker and Mike Pobar again cooked our delicious hamburgers and onions, whilst our Social Club ladies Leona Patrick, Robyn Young, Dot Oldmeadow, Kaye Hammond and Sheryl Traill prepared the salads and burgers and serving the same. Meanwhile 2 of our Life Members, Betty Snell and Brenda Allardyce sold raffle tickets all day. Drink stations & Supply/Betting/ Novelties on course were manned by our volunteers
– Ian Grimes, Ray Fox, John Hammond, Aamir Cao, Simon Middap, Mike Phillips, Karen Darlington, Gary Sugrue, Nigel Blundell, Phil Couper and Gary Voss. Our photographers on the day were Peter McNamara and John Traill, with Jamie Darlington working his drone “magic”. Our Commodore Liz Radajewski was busy all day, organising, setting up, welcoming all, especially the playing groups, on course visits, and of course packing up and presentations at the conclusion of the day (not to mention all the preparation in organising this great day)! Vice Commodore Ces Luscombe, not only assisted Commodore Liz in the above, but also managed to fit in a round on the day as well! Sorry if I have missed anyone of our valued volunteers, it was a great fun filled day – some of our competitors playing for the first time, whilst other, accomplished golfers, have played in most or all of our fun annual charity days, here at the Bribie Island Golf Course.

Beach REPORT
By Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours
Welcome to another beach report from Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours
T
he track from 8th Avenue car park to the beach is really chopped up and extremely rough in places due to increased traffic flow going up the beach, this will only get worse as the holiday season arrives, meanwhile the inland track is not too bad but is getting
powdery in the usual places. When driving simply pick a track, stay in it, avoid wheel spin if possible, have fun.
The lagoons are low in water currently, this does not mean you can drive in them, they are off limits and you will be fined. Enjoy our wonderful piece of the world it’s a privilege to use it not your right.
Snakes are out and about so be careful where you walk, on our last tour we saw a red belly black and a large brown snake, if encountered leave them alone, stand still, don’t panic they will go away. The total fire ban is in place for very good reason, if you see anyone lighting fires please let the rangers know ASAP.

Remember no domestic pets are allowed on the beach, people continue taking their dog into the National Park please report them, this restriction is to protect the wildlife from being killed. Ocean Beach and the inland track are main roads, watch your speed, secure your load and don’t drink and drive, make sure your National Park permit is up to date. Two of our National Park Rangers were assaulted last week, a big thank you goes out to the beach goers that intervened and videoed the disgraceful actions. MAD POETS Christmas in The Tropics
When thunderstorms come rumbling, with sweat profusely tumbling. It’s Christmas in our tropic wonderland. Of cooler ‘climes’ we’re dreaming. The humidity’s still steaming. Christmas is quite different in the tropics, where we stand!

Santa Claus attired in tropic ‘garb’ inspired, Arrives towed by testy crocodiles no less! Reef sandals on his feet, red boxers on his ‘seat,’ Red singlet to complete his tropic dress. With few chimneys to be seen and yards not white but green, His puzzled mind seeks other spots to land. He looks for Christmas trees on “veranda balconies,” Then takes off with a glimpse of golden sand. The children sleep in sweat and dream of presents they might “get” As balmy winds rustle
through the palms. Then awake with festive joy and unwrap each “newborn” toy And cradle each with pride in loving arms. When it’s time for Christmas dinner, no one comes back thinner, As they dine upon the fare that ‘hits’ each plate. Some traditional in style, heated up for quite a while, And some cold cuts for those who come in late. And what is ‘ate’ for ‘pud’ it looks and tastes so good! A fruit salad grown local with some pride! Filled with tropical good cheer, and a “healthy” pot of beer, Soon it’s time to sleep it off and go inside. So, we spend the afternoon, praying for a tropical monsoon, When some of us recall that Christmas has a reason. When a little boy was born, in a stable so forlorn, And we head for church to celebrate the season. © Howard Kennedy
LAUGH RIOT A man asked me for a dollar, I told him I only carry big bills. He said give me one of those, I gave him my electricity bill. Dear algebra, stop asking us to find your X. She’s never coming back. So don’t ask Y. I joined a nudist group. The first three days were the hardest. I was attacked by a tobacconist, I’ve still got the cigars to prove it. 68

How do you count cows? with a cowculator. No more dad jokes. I’m going to try optometrist jokes, They are much cornea. Why did the golfer wear two sets of pants? In case he got a hole in one. By Oscar Cainer DECEMBER 2019 monthly (FULL WEEK AHEAD for Nov 30 / Dec 1, 2019 week) The proof, they say, is in the pudding. This month, Jupiter (growth, optimism and adventure) leaves its Sagittarian home and enters Capricorn; its first visit there for twelve years. As it settles into a new sector of the sky, it brings renewed determination, plus a sense of self-discipline; increasing the chances of future endeavours achieving positive results. This celestial shift brings changes that are sweet enough to satisfy the most demanding of palates… in perfect time for Christmas! ARIES (March 21 - April 20) At times like this, as the preparations for the festive season begin, it can be hard to know where the adults are when you need them. How are you and I supposed to know what to do? When even politicians and leaders exhibit infant-like attitudes, it’s hard to know where to find the help you need. You’re left with no alternative but to dip into the deep well of wisdom that lies within you! Your ability to make good decisions is being highlighted this month. When you share your insight, everyone will enjoy the benefits. Your in-depth forecast for the whole of DECEMBER can really help. Call 1300 017 319. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) December doesn’t only bring sleigh bells and reindeer; it brings the chance for you to heroically ride to the rescue. But do you really feel inclined to sort out everyone’s problems? Why does it always come down to you to clear up the mess and save the day? As we approach the festive season, it’s time to step back and allow other people the space to create their own messes, and to clear them up again. If you define your boundaries, you’ll be in a much better place to share peace and good cheer. DECEMBER is a powerful month for you. Find out more. Call 1300 017 319. GEMINI (May 22 - June 22) This month, your perceptive powers are being boosted. Not only can you discern the wood from the trees, but even fallen Christmas tree needles give valuable clues! Just be aware that as you gain understanding into the more mysterious aspects of people’s lives, your clarity may place a relationship under pressure. When we see more of people than they want us to see, they feel vulnerable, and their defences go up. So, over the festive season, be sure to use your wisdom for the greater good. In DECEMBER, the power of the planets can change your life. Call 1300 017 319. CANCER (June 23 - July 23) When we find ourselves in situations we don’t want to be in, we’re all capable of pretending. It’s easy ‘not’ to see someone.
As long as we’re aware of what we’re doing, there’s no harm in this. The problems start when we try to convince ourselves that we haven’t seen something that we have seen. As we enter the festive season, it’s important not to create a story you don’t believe. If you respect your integrity, you’ll keep your honour intact, and be free to enjoy the social delights that December brings. DECEMBER brings great potential for change. Call 1300 017 319. LEO (July 24 - August 23) Victory comes with a price…it involves someone else suffering the pain of defeat. This month, as we enter the season of good will; although your compassionate, big-hearted personality will benefit anyone who’s suffering from the usual dose of festive anxiety, you will be especially valuable when it comes to finding compromises and avoiding conflicts. We don’t need winners or losers. You can help find creative ways around potential disputes, so that everyone has the peaceful Christmas they desire. Four minutes on the phone can make DECEMBER special. Call 1300 017 319. VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) If we want to learn how to act, there are plenty of drama schools to go to. Yet we don’t need to learn how to be melodramatic. Our lives are full of chances to create emotional maelstroms of anxiety, passion and fear. Oh, and Christmas is the very best time for that. Luckily, this month, as Jupiter moves into a new home, it brings an ability to understand challenging situations (and people), so that you respond rather than react. Make this a season of mellow dramas instead. Everyone will benefit. Inspiring times await you in DECEMBER. Call your NEW forecast: 1300 017 319. LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) Despite the frenetic way you’re leading your life, there’s a feeling that you’re going over familiar ground. Is there a lesson you need to learn? Have you overlooked a vital clue that you must find in order to succeed? No. The similarities with a past era of your life are superficial. As Jupiter changes signs, it brings the courage to return to a matter that needs to be dealt with, and the enthusiasm to rise to the challenge gloriously. An inner glow of confidence is the cosmic gift on offer to you this December. Be ready for the magic on offer to you in DECEMBER. Call 1300 017 319. SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) With Mars in your sign, you’re moving so fast that the scenery is blurred. As the power planet will be in Scorpio for the entire festive season - with the heightened pressure and excitement it brings, we need to put boundaries in place; you don’t want to run out of energy. Fortunately, Jupiter’s move into a new sector of the sky offers opportunities for contemplation
and illumination. It brings the insight to make decisions about where to focus your enthusiasm so that the right people benefit (and that includes you!). DECEMBER brings a rare cosmic opportunity for change. Call 1300 017 319. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) With perfect timing, as we enter the festive season, your ruler, Jupiter, leaves your sign and enters Capricorn. This heralds a significant change of focus, and the beginning of a new era for you. It offers a chance for you to renegotiate a vitally important aspect of a plan, and make an insightful adjustment that will bring a welcome sense of equilibrium into your life. As you recognise the opportunities hidden beneath a problem you’re dealing with, you’ll be able to relax, and add joy and enthusiasm to the festive mix. Don’t miss your inspiring in-depth forecast for DECEMBER. Call 1300 017 319. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Do we arrive in this world with long lists of tasks we need to do? Do children tell each other that they’d like to play, but ‘don’t have time’? Stress is something we seem to grow into. It’s part and parcel of being grown up and sensible; almost a badge of honour that comes with responsibility. Yet, in December, as Jupiter enters your sign, it brings you the ability to see life from a less serious perspective. Give your inner child the space to grow – and the festive season holds the potential to be full of very good cheer. Your in-depth forecast for DECEMBER is ready. Call 1300 017 319. AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) Although there are times when you feel as if you’re up to your neck in water, you’re wearing the psychological equivalent of a state-of-the-art wetsuit. Even when things go pear-shaped, you have the power to put them back on track. In fact, therein lies this month’s challenge. Having so much power can be tiring; calling all the shots involves a lot of responsibility. Yet when the cosmos is sending power your way, you can’t ignore it. Your enthusiasm and good spirit can make this a Christmas to remember. Discover why DECEMBER has so many opportunities. Call 1300 017 319. PISCES (February 20 - March 20) This month, although there will be times when you feel as if you’re pushing a loaded shopping trolley up a steep hill, you have the strength to get to the top. As Jupiter moves into a new home, in complete contrast to the usual pattern of events, life becomes less stressful as we move further into the festive season. You have powerful resources available to you; both emotional and material. As you draw on them, you’ll be able to generously share the Christmas spirit so that everyone benefits. There is inspiring news in your in-depth DECEMBER forecast. Call 1300 017 319.

SPORT
Fun And (Name) Games… Sportsword compiler Peter Thomson reflects on the time he got to meet his famous golfing namesake. “Not THE Peter Thomson?”
I
f I had a dollar for every time I’ve been asked that question over the years I could be writing this from the Bahamas. A question posed in jest, of course, but, as it happens, a regular reminder of the time I got to meet my celebrated five-time British Open-winning namesake. In 1972, I was covering the City of Auckland Golf Classic – an event featuring a 42-year-old Peter Thomson (doubling as a golf writer for The Age newspaper), and won
by rising Aussie star Jack Newton, whose career tragically ended in 1983 after a shocking Sydney airport accident. It was during a memorable one-on-one with Thomson in the media room that he related what he described as one of the more “humbling” experiences of his illustrious golf career. Five years previous he had been preparing for the British Open at Royal Liverpool, Hoylake – in a pro-am field which included a Liverpool football hero by the name of Peter Thompson.
Five-time British Open champion Peter Thomson. He died in Melbourne on June 20, 2018, aged 88. “As I came off the 18th green there were a bunch of kids chasing autographs and I duly obliged,” the affable Victorian recalled. “Then, as I started to walk away, I couldn’t help but overhear a couple of them comparing notes.”
As the great man told it, the exchange went something like this: “Whose autograph did you get?” “Peter Thomson.” “Not THE Peter Thom(p)son?” “No … the golfer.”

On behalf of the Team at Rotary’s World’s Greatest Meal to End Polio and Bribie Rotary, I am writing to thank you for your marvellous coverage of our upcoming event ‘Faulty Towers the Original Dining Experience.’ Following publication of my article about the Event in the “Islander” and your generosity in giving us the flyer, a mention on the front page and on the ‘In this Issue’ page, the Event Booking website, we used, crashed due to the number of bookings and visitors. We had it up and running again very quickly and the Event actually sold out the next day. We had a few very
The Bribie Islander has become a very popular and well patronised magazine that provides a wonderful service to our local community. I am proud to be a regular contributor. A special thank you to Lisa Wendland, for her clever layouts that so enhance our articles. My husband Michael is a regular reader and commented it was like a ‘real’ magazine - he meant the layout, quality, and content, and one you’d actually buy.

Dear Editor, A huge THANK YOU to all the sponsors and all the businesses on Bribie Island who supported the Croquet Club Fund Raising day on the 2nd of November. Many businesses gave fabulous prizes for the raffle. A very big THANK YOU to the Bribie Islander too for advertising our event and keeping it local. We had teams from Traditional Funerals, Dragon’s Abreast, Rotary Clubs, Pumistone Passage Probus, Community Arts Centre, Carinity, Karuna, Dementia Support and Beach Mere Palm Lakes. A great time was had by all. The best news is that $3,400 dollars was raised for the
Dear Editor, I read with interest the article ‘Bridge Over Troubled Waters’ as I was a small girl when the bridge opened & with my family, a regular visitor. In the article, it states “It is a pity that the people of Bribie don’t demand more of their representatives, to make sure that it remains the unique place that has made it different for so long”. In the 70’s, our parents began building a home on Bribie & I met my future husband. In the 80’s & 90’s while we were raising our own family close by, our parents continued to prepare their home for the time they could retire to a beautiful quiet existence.

They retired here in the early 2000’s. Their deteriorating health prompted my husband & I to buy & move back here in 2013. Since moving here, ourselves & many of our neighbours (many who are elderly & were neighbours of our parents) try & get our concerns heard. Excessive hooning, total lack of consideration for residence (the ratepayers!!), very little heeding off council & main road signage & the general massive rise in day trippers does not seem to have led to an increase in policing of this on a council or state level. In our area, many people have voiced concerns over the impact on our environment, impact on our personal safety, comfort & lives. The response is usually about the so called tourist $ that are brought to the island.
If you have any ideas on how we can demand more of our representatives (& actually be heard), many of us would be thankful. I for one would love to be able to listen to the news on a weekend evening without having to shut the house up to stifle the excessive roaring of vehicles up our street & creating huge dust clouds that go through our homes. Cheers, Susan Clark, Bribie.
Dear Editor, Climate activists have included in their arguments, a case for going vegan, which only makes sense if you don’t consider the whole story. Perhaps their vegan brains are not operating at optimum capacity. The human denture shows that we have evolved to eat meat - that’s what the canine teeth are for.
Also, the invention of cookery to make meat easily digestible has been credited with the evolution of our large brains. Now there is increasing evidence that choline is a vital dietary component in maintaining brain health. Only animal products will give us a reasonable concentration of this nutrient, the best sources being liver, eggs and salmon. So here is some advice for older people fearing the development of dementia: make sure you eat animal products, or at least take choline supplements with all your leafy green vegetables. Dear Editor, A suggestion for an article in the Bribie Islander would be about all the amazing free exercise
classes offered by the Council in their Healthy & Active programme. I run the Pilates class at Crest Park on the Sylvan Beach Esplanade each Tuesday morning at 9am. This is proving to be very popular amongst the residents who cannot afford to attend a gym. Only downside is if it rains the class doesn’t eventuate. I usually attract approximately 45 attendees to each class!! Just a thought Editor. Cheers, Sharon. 0408 450 534. CONTINUTES OVER PAGE >

Letters Dear Editor, I have noticed a lot of people showing an interest and by the Police for parking on the Aldi store road or Goodwin Drive, they stop just shy of the Zebra crossing on the grass now dirt. It seems trucks or 4x4’s or vehicle and trailer are most commonly seen. I am guessing that it is easier for them to do so if they have

a trailer on to pick up sales and a lot of trucks for smoko for example are parking on the opposite side and one of them walks over to the store while the truck waits. I have had abuse from drivers when exiting the car park onto Goodwin Drive one women followed me down to Woolies honking and screaming if you don’t do 60k’s when exiting than don’t exit. It

can be very hard to get out of the car park. I have contacted Aldi to ask if they have a solution for example delivery or extra parking for big vehicles. You can just see the edge of a truck tyre on the zebra paint that stopped today, my concern would be someone being hit on the crossing. I took a photo of a dead
possum today and the crossing and have attached it to the email it’s a bit of a speed zone the roundabouts make it more fun I think like a chicane. The new signs look great and have made visitors more aware, thanks for the efforts in contributing to the safety of our wildlife in helping to get some signs up. Susan Kopittke

Dear Editor, IWhat kind of visitors are we having on Bribie? Every day when we walk the dogs at Woorim we pick up rubbish every morning without fail. What is the matter with people? We pick up MacDonald’s rubbish, dirty disposable nappies and other items far too disgusting to record. So often the rubbish is no more than a meter from the bin. This weekend we saw something even worse vandalism on the bunker
opposite Eighth Avenue at the end of North Street. What sort of person feels the need to smash great lumps of concrete from the wall and cause as much damage as they can leaving the rocks, they have smashed off the building on the ground? This problem is getting worse and will continue to get worse over the school holiday. What can we as residents do to stop this type of behaviour? Kathy Vincent, resident.
