which she received an award for, and our fantastic contributors and of course the advertisers who make this magazine possible. Now we have a new wonderful person to take on this mighty challenge.
Dear Readers, Welcome to our final issue for the year and what a wonderful time of year this is. The festive season is upon us and for me, it’s a time for family and friends but also as a business owner, time to reflect on the year and the progress of this magazine, we have seen David Sweedman take on my role of General Manager and Editor in late 2018 and relaunch the magazine at the start of the year, after we decided to scrap The Bribie Islander newspaper and continue forward as a gloss magazine every 2 weeks. What a great idea and what a wonderful job David performed and not to mention Lisa Wendland our designer who has been the backbone of this publication 4

Readers, I would like to personally thank you all, I have enjoyed the challenge of Owner Editor (again!) and it has been fun and thanks for all the positive comments received and input from you all. I would like to welcome the new General Manager and Editor Cherrie Wilson, a local on Bribie who has been in the industry for many years, so watch this magazine flourish as we relaunch into 2020. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year and thanks again. Take Care,

GET OUT!!!!!
Being outside is beneficial not only for your physical wellbeing but also for your mental health.
B
eing in the outdoors has been scientifically proven to also help with improved short-
term memory and concentration, mental fatigue, better vision, stress reduction, immune boosts, and creativity!
Even if you are taking the dog for a walk or flying a kite you will benefit. Start a walking group with your friends. Go and reacquaint yourself with our local national parks. Take a walk on the wild side and go back to nature.
Look around and see our wildlife, take in the fresh air, the sounds of the birds and smells of our bushland. Even if you go out to the back yard. When was the last time you looked up into the sky and made images out of clouds? As a child I remember spending many days, laying on a blanket and seeing incredible things in the clouds, your imagination is endless.

I also remember how peaceful that was. Today’s society has forgotten about the simple joys in life. We have forgotten to (as they used to say) stop and smell the roses. Make today the start of a new routine, set at least 15 minutes aside each day simply to stop, relax and enjoy your surroundings. Let your inner child out! HEALTH, WELLBEING & COMMUNITY
WHAT A YEAR
For the Wallum Action Group by Neil Wilson
T
he Wallum Action Group Community Nursery uses funds that are raised by plant sales to provide assistance for many causes and over the years this has included providing wheelchairs to the Caboolture Hospital, paying for the training of an assistance dog, donating defibrillators to various organisations and helping many others in times of crisis. With this in mind, it comes as no surprise that President David Wearne describes the past twelve months as arguably their most active year to date.
‘We kicked the year off by donating several torches to the SES and followed it up with the donation of another four defibrillators. More recently, we funded the purchase of three television sets for the Caboolture Hospital and made a donation of $15,000 to Camp Quality,’ said David. ‘As well as that, the nursery has assisted Wildlife Rescue and BIKES as well as sponsoring the Bribie Island and Sandstone Point Carols events,’ he added. Speaking about the Wallum Action Group’s attendance at the annual Camp Quality family Christmas party which was held at Brennan Park, David said that volunteers from the nursery held raffles and sold plants to raise funds for the Camp Quality families. ‘Our donation of $15,000 will allow fifteen families to go on a weeklong holiday,’ he pointed out. As more gardening enthusiasts are finding out about the Bribie Island Community Nursery, it recently became necessary to extend the opening hours to cater for the demand and the new hours are from 8 am to Noon on weekdays as well as on the first Saturday of each month. The nursery offers customers an exceptional range of very competitively priced plants to choose from.
The Wallum Action Group presented a $15.000 cheque to Camp Quality
As do many organisations at this time of year, the Wallum Action Group recently held their Christmas Party and during the very well attended event which was held in the spacious
Millie Vuksan (L) and Ann Ward received recognition for over 20 years of volunteering with the Wallum Action Group Orchid House, long-time volunteers Ann Ward (who only recently retired from the role of Treasurer) and Millie Vuksan were recognised for over twenty years of service to the group. The Wallum Action Group Community Nursery is located on First Avenue next door to the Orchid House and during the Christmas and New Year period will be closed from Noon on December 20th and will re-open on January 6th. Anyone needing further information about the nursery should either pay a visit to the well-stocked premises or call 0407 699 953.
The team at the Bribie Islander Magazine would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our valued readers, advertisers, and contributors a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New year. Without all of you, our fantastic magazine would not be possible. We take great pride in being Bribie Island’s only full colour, full gloss locally owned and operated community Magazine, sharing your stories and ours. We are looking forward to some exciting new changes in the New Year, but rest assured, all your favourite reads will still be here and we will continue to support the beautiful community we live in. Our office will be closed from Wednesday 25th December 2019 and re-open on the 6th of January 2020.

REEGAN – CHANGING ONE KIDS LIFE AT A TIME By Cherrie Wilson
I
must say it I was brought to tears writing this story about such an amazing little boy. Reegan is only 9 years old and has already achieved so much with his big heart and helping hands. I can only imagine how proud his family must be of him. Reegan has made it his mission to help as many kids and families in need as he can and let me say, he is doing a fantastic job! Reegan collects cans and bottles and uses 100% of the money made on helping those in need. He has been doing this for the past year and is now expanding with old scrap items and pulling them apart to raise more revenue. Look at what Reegan has achieved in this year alone. • Helped a family with children’s clothes after a house fire on Australia day • Supplied 3 families in Stanthorpe

with animal food after the bushfires • Assisted a little boy in CPL with a cut-out table • Supplied 2 Care bags for foster kids • Assisted a little girl in CPL with pool therapy toys • Provided Christmas presents for kids in foster care • Bought food and other items for Caboolture Community Action Centre for the homeless • Supplied water for an evacuation centre at the Sunshine Coast during the bushfires • Paid for and presented Christmas and school supplies for families out west including Dalby, Westmar State School, St George, and Cullamulla • Given water, for Stanthorpe to assist with their drought • Supplied water for an evacuation centre at the Sunshine Coast during the bushfires • Given therapy toys to CPL Mt Gravatt
• Paid for and presented Christmas and school supplies for families out west including Dalby, Westmar State School, St George, and Cullamulla.
Reegans latest goals are helping a boy who is visually impaired get medical equipment so he can start high school. And after he has accomplished that he wants to take food hampers to the struggling families in Westmar at Easter time. Reegan is an exceptional little boy who deserves a massive round of applause for all the help he has given to others expecting nothing in return. To help Reegan accomplish his dream, or simply follow this extraordinary little boy in his quest you can follow him on the below FaceBook address. https://www.facebook.com/ Changing-one-kids-life-at-atime-348891969124712/ As Reegan says, AND TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!

Christmas loneliness common among elderly By Sourced from Seasons Aged Care – Belinda Peters
A
s many of us prepare to catch up with family over the Christmas break, spare a thought for those that may not be so lucky, especially our elders living in aged care. To help tackle loneliness amongst seniors this festive season, The Red Cross has launched the national campaign ‘Season of Belonging’. The campaign encourages each of us to take steps to connect with others in our community that may find Christmas to be an especially hard time. The effect of loneliness cannot be underestimated, with impacts on both emotional and physical health. In launching the
campaign, Minister for Aged Care Ken Wyatt revealed he recently visited an aged care home where, yearround, none of the residents receive visitors. “This is a particularly distressing situation, despite the best efforts of the aged care staff,” said Minister Wyatt. “I have previously raised concerns that up to 40 per cent of aged care residents receive no visitors, but 100 per cent is completely unacceptable. “So more than ever this Christmas, I am asking all Australians to reach out to people in residential aged care and relatives,

friends, and community members everywhere in need of company.” The Season of Belonging campaign encourages us to take five simple steps this Christmas: • Meet neighbours • Volunteer • Say hello to someone new in the neighbourhood • Check on someone who may be in trouble • Be kind on social media Minister Wyatt said campaigns such as this are vitally important to ensure people are not forgotten this Christmas. “Our need for love, company, compassion, family and friends does not diminish as we age. It’s up to all of us to show people, especially senior Australians, that we care and value them, by being there as much as we can.”
Volunteering in aged care Volunteers are an integral part of aged care lifestyle programs and help residents with a range of activities from simply reading the newspaper through to running craft and gardening workshops. Spending time with elderly residents may offer them muchneeded companionship. Another way to volunteer is through the Federal Government’s Community Visitors Scheme, which will help match you with a local senior in need of companionship.

occur in the bloodstream, excess LDL (low-density lipoprotein) begins to seep into the inner wall of the artery. This triggers an inflammatory response, which speeds up the accumulation of cholesterol in the artery wall. This, in turn, produces more inflammation. Eventually, the deposited cholesterol hardens into a plaque, which can rupture and lead to the blood clots that cause heart attacks and strokes—an event that inflammation also appears to help along.
Hi, my name is Leonie, I am a Remedial Massage Therapist at Bribie Simply Health. Massage Therapy enhances the functions of joints and muscles by moving the toxins or lactic acid out of the muscles and has the blood flowing freely through the muscles. It is
the build-up of toxins in the muscles that causes pain in that region. Massage improves circulation and cleansing of body systems, promotes healing of injuries, balances nervous and energy systems relieves mental and physical fatigue, and feels wonderful!
Are you getting the most from your Home Care Provider?
I use and recommend the use of magnesium spray/oil because of its benefits for muscles. Included in my massage, if necessary, I also use acupressure points and Chinese Cupping. Both are very useful tools in helping relieve pain. If you would like more information, please phone my mobile 0403 266 664, or the shop on 3410 0521

Curb the Christmas splurge with a healthy holiday season
C
ancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan calls on Queenslanders to give a gift to themselves this Christmas with a healthy holiday season. Here are 5 festive tips.
1
. Incorporate fruit and veggies into every dish. There can be too many options when it comes to Christmas dinner, and not all of them are usually healthy. Make fruits and vegetables the main element in your meals and mix up your serving style to keep it festive – think fruit platters using tree-shaped cutters and colourful salads. Before heading out to an event, munch on a healthy snack to reduce the chance of over-indulging on highkilojoule party food.
2
. Portion your plate. When so much food is on offer, it can be easy to over-eat, so try to stop and enjoy what you’re consuming. Fill most of your plate with delicious salads, a quarter of your plate with carbohydrate-based foods, and the final quarter should be a source of protein.
3
. Stay hydrated and limit alcohol and sugary drinks. Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water; to
give your drink a flavour boost, add a squeeze of lemon or infuse water with fresh fruit. Also, remember, while drinking alcohol may add to the enjoyment of your festive-events, alcohol consumption increases your cancer risk. If you choose to drink, limit your alcohol intake.
4
. Get active. By incorporating even 30 minutes of physical exercise into a fun activity each day, you can feel healthier and more energised. Play a round of backyard cricket, take the dog on a family walk to the park, or go for a bike ride and explore your surroundings.
For your peace of mind A gift in your Will to Cancer Council Queensland provides hope for a cancer free future. To receive your FREE guide to leaving a gift in your Will or enquire about our free Will writing service please contact our friendly team on 1300 66 39 36, email giftsinwills@cancerqld.org.au or visit cancerqld.org.au/bequests
5
. Stay sun safe. An Aussie Christmas isn’t complete without the great outdoors, so don’t forget to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide to stay sun smart when outside. Keep an eye on the UV Index, and remember to be extra careful when the level is three or above, which is often from as early as 7.30am in summer.
“I’m not a wealthy woman but I want to leave what I can to make life easier for people who are going through cancer.” Rebecca, who has kindly included a gift in her Will.
It only takes a few small changes to look after the health of yourself, friends and family, so feast to feel good and unwrap better well-being this Christmas!

Food, Wine & Island CHRISTMAS IN AUSTRALIA…
And when the family arrives what songs will be on your playlist?
Y
I’d like to make a case for a truly Australian Christmas. After all, we’ve already ditched the Easter bunny and replaced her with the Easter Bilby.
LET IT RAIN, LET IT RAIN, LET IT RAIN es, it’s Christmas time again. And once again we’re subjected to the mangled warbling’s of lesserknown pop stars and failed Australian Idol runners-up as they massacre those all-toofamiliar Christmas songs. European Christmas songs, I might add. So, we sing endlessly of chestnuts roasting on open fires, silvery sleighbells, prancing reindeer and glistening snow. Here we are in one of the hottest spots on Earth and our shop fronts are adorned with fake snowflakes, corpulent Santas in heavy red woollen outfits, complete with fur-lined gloves, and hulking black snow boots. Poor Santa. Why is it that in Australia we still cling to the Christmas traditions and trappings of faraway climes? Now I don’t want to put a damper on the Christmas
spirit. After all, it’s a wonderful time of the year. We gather with our nearest and dearest, exchanging pointless gifts (mostly from the middle aisle at Aldi) that we don’t need. We catch up on family gossip, meet our rellies’ new partners, and yes, according to statistics kill each other with more frequency than the rest of the year. Ah… Christmas! But I digress. What will your Christmas look like this year? Will you swelter over a hot roast dinner, with all the trimmings? Will you bake the ham according to the latest supermarket free Christmas recipe book – complete with studded cloves and Christmas glaze? Will you spend hours stoking the plum pudding? Then will you stand over the stove, in your red felt Santa hat, sweating profusely into the damned custard, and stirring till it becomes, well, custardy?
Times
Naturally, I’ll be at the beach with my family for Christmas – not my beloved Bribie, but a tad further north. Christmas lunch will be cold chook, prawns, and salads. No Christmas pudding (I gave that away years ago when I realized I was the only one who ate it. Plus, I was starting to resemble a pudding.) I’ll be making Mum’s famous custard slice (a family favourite) and toasting my dear Mum and Dad in their absence with a margarita or two. There’ll be Eton Mess, nuts (of course) and chocolates. As for my playlist, I won’t lie… there may be some Bing crooning away about a white Christmas.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas! From all The Team. PRE-ORDER OUR SAVOURY AND SWEET Platters for any Occasion...
However, I’m including those terrific Australian Christmas carols by John Wheeler and William G. James. These songs are wonderfully Australian. The three wise men become the three drovers and there are lyrics like ‘Out on the plains, the brolgas are dancing,’ and ‘the north wind is tossing the leaves… the grass in the paddock is high ‘. If you don’t know these gems, please Google them. You won’t be disappointed. And of course, Paul Kelly’s iconic ‘How to Make Gravy’ will feature on my Christmas playlist. I’m also busily re-writing some of the traditional Christmas songs I grew up with to reflect a more Australian perspective. I’ll leave you with a snippet so far… ‘The weather outside is frightening. I hear thunder… is that lightning? Now it’s Christmas time again. Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain.’ Merry Australian Christmas!

FOOD, WINE & GOOD TIMES The primary cause of seafood spoilage is temperature. Storing seafood at the optimal temperature is crucial to ensure superior product quality, freshness and maximum shelf life. It has been proven that seafood begins to deteriorate as soon as it is caught, or harvested, and then killed. This deterioration is irreversible and the rate at which deterioration occurs is determined by temperature. Therefore, appropriate refrigeration is so necessary.
STORING SEAFOOD SAFETY By RACQ Living
T
wo products increase in sales during the summer— ice and seafood. Many of us enjoy a feed of fresh or frozen seafood currently of year, whether it be prawns, oysters,
mussels, crabs, lobster or fish. But keeping seafood fresh before eating requires good refrigeration, so leaving a kilo of prawns in an esky overnight isn’t be the most appropriate storage solution.
• Fresh or wet seafood should be stored at -1C to +5C. • Frozen seafood should be stored at -25C or below. • Seafood stored at 0C can last up to 12 days. • Seafood stored at 4C can last up to six days. • Seafood stored at 10C can last up to three days. In simple terms, keep your tasty seafood as cold as possible for it to last if possible. If you suspect your seafood is spoiled, don’t take the risk of getting food poisoning. Better to throw it out and buy fresh again.

The night started quietly with drinks in the bar. The audience warmed up from a few smiles and giggles while the hors d’oeuvres were served, to absolute roars of laughter by the end of the night. Being escorted to your table by Manuel or Basil can be, in itself, an experience not to be missed. The well known Fawlty Towers scenarios were all performed by Basil (Rob Langston), Sybil (Amy Currie) and Manuel (Andy Foreman). Some of the classic segments involved the guests’ participation:
Robyn sitting so demurely with the rat (or Siberian hamster) as well as Manuel on her lap; Nardelle and Manuel’s bull fight; Julie having her head ‘buttered’ on the table; Greg coping with the thrusts of Manuel’s Heimlich manoeuvre; Sybil’s laugh; and of course Basil’s funny Nazi walk – ‘Who won the bloody war anyway?’; Manuel’s removal of a wine stain from Patch Roycroft’s table cloth was instructional – to say the least. Everyone joined in the fun and those that were singled out for special attention ‘performed’ so well. The spontaneous reactions of David and Chad who were ‘seated’ on the floor by Manuel; the lady who ran around the room as part of the ‘Sapphire’ drill; the guest who had to take Basil’s retort to his

complaint about people from Caboolture never being satisfied; Peter, when expelled from his table; and Colleen for getting up and serving the bread rolls, were all part of the raucous night. Colleen at least didn’t ‘serve’ the rolls a la Manuel style – the overhead tennis way. The costumes and makeup used by Rob, Amy and Andy were superb – they really looked and sounded like the ‘Fawlty’ characters. At times, Andy really fitted Basil’s description - ‘For someone called Manuel,
you’re looking terribly ill…’ Thanks to Rob, Amy, Andy, Rajna, Karin and Claire from Interactive Theatre International; Samantha Thornton and the team at Bribie RSL for the great venue, 3 course meal, fantastic service, preparation and becoming part of the show; Richard Whetlor from the Bribie Islander for his promotion of the event; Di Wells from Anna’s Fashion Boutique for lending us a prop; and to our wonderful community for their overwhelming support.

ARRIVAL By Elaine Lutton
And the Beasts
Last fortnight I wrote about the beauty of the cactus at the bottom of our yard. We have not just one beast to go with it but several. Don and I grew quite accustomed to our wildlife but visitors could get quite a shock. Not everyone was happy to know that we had snakes in the yard, some venomous, some not. Look but do not touch, we would tell our grandsons. In particular, they adored our many frogs, especially the green tree frogs, and were rather more tolerant of the cane toads than Don or I. During a period of high winds, we had a Titan Stick Insect, all 33cm. of it, blown down from the tops of the eucalypts in our yard. It was mottled grey-brown with a chequered purplish pattern on the hind wings.
The thorax had short conical prickles with purple tips. Amazing! In similar conditions, we sometimes saw the Goliath Stick Insect, much fatter but a little shorter. It is basically green with yellow rings around the abdomen. The hind wings have a flash of red when unfolded, whilst the hind legs have prominent curved spines. If handled they give an impressive threat display, showing two false eyes at the base of their legs. Spiders were, and still are, abundant. Some were surprisingly beautiful, but not so the huge huntsmen that liked to share my shower when I was at my most vulnerable. Ugh! When Don was around, I would scream for help and he would put a towel over these horrors and take them outside. The leaf litter around our trees would be alive with tiny skinks whilst at night the geckos made themselves comfortable

Lace Monitor both inside and outside our home. Things that go “bump in the night” could usually be put down to the possums on the roof. It would be unkind to refer to these delightful creatures as beasts, but in the days when we did home swaps, we would always re-assure our visitors that nocturnal “bumps” and “heavy breathing” were due to nothing more alarming than our furry friends. During the day, the Bearded Dragons sunned themselves looking very aristocratic and laidback whilst a Blue-
tongued Lizard preferred to hide in the garage. One year, to our great delight, a Lace Monitor returned after an absence of several years. These big goannas can move and climb surprisingly quickly before finding a comfortable resting spot high up in a tree in order to soak up the sun. Don and I counted ourselves very fortunate to live amongst so much interesting native wildlife and appreciated our “beasts” quite as much as our more good-looking co-habitants.

Book Donations for The Smith Family Children Take the Cake! T he Donate a Book Appeal at the local library was such a huge success they needed a trailer to load up! Now in its 11th year, the appeal is run through the Moreton Bay Regional Council libraries and items go directly to The Smith Family Learning For Life students. Area Co-ordinator Anthony Pfingst said Xmas would be exciting for the 1200 students in his area which stretches from Morayfield to Rockhampton. Most of these children don’t have books in their homes and to get their very own for Xmas is very special.
Loading the books
1600 books were donated to the Bribie Library and Councillor Brooke Savage presented a large cheque from the Council.
Education is the primary focus of TSF and they are really innovative and very effective in their programs under the Learning For Life umbrella which includes Let’s Read - a one on one shared reading over the phone, a Homework Club after school with local VIEW members providing afternoon tea and a Mentoring program. Representatives from The Smith Family attending the handover included the Learning For Life Co-ordinator for primary students Genevieve Dyer, senior school Coordinator Maryke Palumbo and Bribie VIEW Club President Faye Clark. ‘We’re a big part of The Smith Family’ said Faye, ‘and our women’s club which was started by TSF has been active for 60 years in 2020. Bribie Club is 23 years old and supports 6 scholarship holders. We fundraise and provide school materials all year round and make sure our students get a birthday and Xmas card.

Understanding the behaviour and drive of the dog. PART 1
Why do dogs attack other dogs? We are told that dogs are pack animals and are sociable creatures. Fighting is part of their basic nature no different from humans arguing, siblings squabbling. In the wild fighting amongst them is very rare and the wild dogs are related to one another. In domestic dogs the incidence is much higher and there are some dogs that cannot be around other dogs without resorting to fighting.
Visitor
One of the reason is the pet dogs are under socialised and ill prepared for the social demands. For example taking your dog for a walk, your dog will encounter several unfamiliar dogs. Then the owners expect their dogs to interact socially with one another. If one of the dogs feels compelled to act anti social he will either retreat (defence flight) or convince the other dog to retreat by acting aggressively (defence fight) towards it. In fact, when the owner intervenes he exacerbates the situation and may unknowingly have trained the dog to act aggressively.

ROTARY the Rotary RV Fellowship at the 4 April night. A World Polio Day Trivia night on 24 October was attended by Susanne Rea and Nauman Abbasi from Rotary’s Worlds Great Meal. International Women’s Day High Tea: Our fifth annual High Tea raised money for Interplast. Lyntara Quirke was our Guest Speaker and Bribie’s very own Shane Kells and The Gleeman performed special musical segments.
Why can’t Everyday be like Christmas? By Anne Matthews PR Director Bribie Rotary
‘W
hy can’t every day be like Christmas’ is one of my favourite Christmas songs, especially sung by Elvis. My family and I all love Christmas and even though we have endured loss and sadness at this time of year, we always ensure we make it special time. Christmas is a time of peace and good will. A time to forget fighting and hatred - they even called a truce on Christmas Day on the Western Front in WW1. It is a time of giving and sharing. What better way to spread the message of goodwill than to recap our very busy year in Bribie Rotary. Rotary Markets: We held 12 successful Market Days in Brennan Park overlooking the beautiful Pumicestone Passage. This year we attracted new regular store holders (have you tried the donuts!) and lots of
34
casuals. The commitment of our dedicated Market coordinators, Gillian and David Parry, has reached knighthood status - there is no other way to recognise their contributions to our community. Every second Sunday of the month, the Parry’s organise 16-18 members to be on duty at the markets. Several others work quietly behind the scenes shopping for supplies or collecting and returning the keys to Brennan Park from Moreton Bay Council. Market Day for Gillian and David starts at 4am! Movie and Trivia Nights: Three successful movie nights were held during the year. ‘Storm Boy’ in January; ‘All is True’ in June and ‘Downton Abbey’ in September. All enticed large crowds with several dressing as Shakespearean characters for ‘All is True’. There were four trivia nights which attracted record numbers of teams, with a visit from

International Clubs Training and Dinner: Incoming Presidents from Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Nauru visited Bribie in March for training. A very enjoyable dinner, attended by representatives from Rotary District 9600, to recognise our International visitors, was held at Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club (PHGCC) on 21 March. Our Secretary, Mary Grant, is also Coordinator for the Island Clubs that form part of our District - a very busy and dedicated Rotarian. Pride of Workmanship: This Rotary initiative allows managers in our community to help employees achieve the goal of job satisfaction and publicly recognise them for their efforts. A record number of nine
recipients were honoured in this year’s Awards. The presentation dinner at PHGCC was rated a ‘Perfect’ night. Scrabble Competition: Our third annual scrabble Competition, organised by the inimitable Heather White, was a successful fun night and raised much needed funds for Shelterbox. Lift the Lid on Mental Illness: At our meeting on 10 October, which is World Mental Health Day, members and guests wore eye catching hats and donated to Australian Rotary Health’s national mental health awareness campaign. The following day we held a High Tea, again wearing hats and raising funds for the initiative. World Polio Day High Tea: A rather spectacular High morning tea, organised by Rotarian Bill Peacock was held at the Bribie Island Hotel. This event was attended by special guests Susanne Rea and Nauman Abbasi from World’s Greatest Meal and Karin Kolenko and Gold Coast Beji. Interact and Earlyact Clubs: On 1 June, thanks to the dedication and commitment of our Youth Director, June Sturges, and
David and Gillian Parry with Raffle winner Elaine who runs one of the Markets Stalls
REGULAR FEATURES teacher Rebecca Bray, we were able to establish an Interact Club at Bribie Island State High School. The fledgling Club’s first project has been collecting plastic bottle tops for Envision Hands. Our EarlyAct Club at Bribie Island State School continues to grow and improve the quality of life of their school, local and global communities. Thanks to the commitment of June Sturges and teachers Rosi Riek and Kim Hatfield, they completed three projects this year. Grant funding: A big success for us this year, thanks to an application submitted by John Oxenford, was the receipt of grant funds from our Rotary District. The funds were used to help build a team of STEM capable teachers at the three Island schools and St Michael’s Caboolture. We also received a Gaming Grant which allowed us purchasing a defibrillator, to update our audio-visual equipment and purchase new banners. A further grant from Moreton Bay Regional Council enabled further planting and restoration in the sand dunes around Rotary Park in Woorim. NYSF & MUNA: Alexis Thomas and Lara Thompson were sponsored by our Club to attend the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra in January. In August Amelia Strazdins and Ema Machan represented BISHS and Bribie Rotary at the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) in Canberra. I was lucky enough to be chaperone for this trip. This was the third time we have taken BISHS students to Canberra for the MUNA event. RYDA: With the assistance of the Rotary Club of Caboolture, we introduced Rotary Youth Driver
Awareness to Year 11 students at BISHS. This program is designed to reduce the trauma on our roads by encouraging students to take a more responsible attitude to driving. The first training day was attended by 123 students, 6 teachers and seven Bribie Rotary members. We are pleased that the school has committed to the program again in 2020. Support for the three Island Schools: Along with the many projects described under other headings, we also sponsored the All Rounder Awards at the two primary school and provided a bursary and perpetual trophy for the Dux of Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 at BISHS. We continued to pay for Hearing tests at Banksia Beach State School and to pay for school breakfasts. Rotarian, Robyn Harper in partnership with George Franklin from the RSL arranged our Community Link Project at the two primary schools. And, we provided mosquito nets and financial support for the BISHS Cambodian trip. Youth Exchange Program: Three of our members are on the District Youth Exchange Committee. Last week Bernie and John Wilson took twelve inbound students and six outbound students on a week long ‘sunshine safari’ visiting various locations throughout Queensland. Peace Fellows: We said goodbye to Raina Fox in
Bribie Rotary members and partners August and welcomed Nico Schneider in February. Also, our Board of Directors gave approval for us to sponsor Ana Belen Harb from Ecuador in 2020 2021. Neighbourhood Centre: This year our members again donated special Christmas food for the homeless, to the Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre. Two our our members represent the Club on the Helping Agencies Network Development (HAND) which was established to create awareness of help available on the island and surrounds and provide avenues for those who live in our community to obtain help in times of need. Other Support: Financial contributions were given for Carols in the Park; the Christmas Lights Parade; the Malnutrition Project in PNG and the Sustainable Cambodia Project. In closing, I must say, we could have done very little of the above without the generosity of our community and the unflinching service of all members of the Bribie Rotary Club. The simple act of buying a sausage sandwich at the Markets, buying a raffle ticket from Lurline or her assistants, or even just
attending a function, means ALL of the money raised goes to the above wonderful causes. Even the Bribie Rotary “volunteers” pay to belong to the Club, and give their time freely. In reading this back it amazes me what we have done in this year. You can see that our members have been very busy. On behalf of our President, Jeff Eustace, and all our members, I wish all readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. And special thanks to the Bribie Islander for allowing us to publish these articles every second week; and to all those who generously donated to our Christmas raffle which raised $650. It’s hard to close my last article for the year without an appropriate quote. Who better than Dr Seuss, who said - ‘Maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a Store? Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.’ Or perhaps the simple truth – ‘if Christmas isn’t found in your heart – you won’t find it under a tree!’ Merry Christmas to all.

ufous Whistlers are very common birds residing in wooded areas and wallum heathland on Bribie Island and local areas. There are several species of whistlers in Australia but only two, the Rufous and 36
the Golden Whistlers are found here. Rufous Whistlers, the most common of the whistlers in Australia are small birds 16-17 cm in length and weighing only 18-32 g. Males and females are

different in appearance. Males have large heads, rufous breasts with white throats underlined by a black band and are a brownish colour above. This plumage is not acquired by males until about 3 years old. Males are not likely to be confused with any other birds because of their unique plumage. Females and immature birds are also brownish above but their underparts are a light buff with black streaks. Tails of both sexes are almost as long as their bodies. Their most striking feature is the variety of melodious, complex calls which ring through the bush on a regular basis, particularly during spring and early summer. Loud noises are often the trigger for the whistlers to commence calling. They are indeed one of Australia’s most outstanding songbirds. Throughout Australia where conditions are right in woodlands, arid inland areas where there are trees, and in parks and gardens close to nature reserves are places where they are most likely to be seen. They are mainly sedentary but there is some movement in the south of Australia to the north in autumn and back south during summer. Wet areas such as rainforests are usually avoided. They are also found in New Caledonia. Food is mainly insects with some seeds, a little fruit and vegetation. They forage systematically alone or in pairs in the canopies of high trees or shrubs. Occasionally they hover in search of food. They do not feed on the ground and are rarely if ever seen there. Before breeding commences usually from Sept- Feb the young from the previous brood are driven away to
fend for themselves. Rufous fantails are monogamous and the males each year begin their courting rituals with what is called the “Bob and Bow”. These rituals are performed for the females when the males bob and bow while continually whistling. Females select the nest sites which are usually in the forks of trees with clumps of leaves hiding the nests if possible. Flimsy, untidy nests are built by the females alone. These nests are between 1-8 m high but are usually on the lower end of the scale and are constructed with twigs and forest materials and bound together with cobwebs. They are so thin that in most cases the eggs can be seen through the bottom of the nest. Males step in to help with the incubation of 2-4 freckled olive eggs. After 14-15 days the eggs hatch and the males help with the rearing of the young. Two broods may be produced each year. In 1801 Rufous Fantails came to the attention of John Latham and were studied from samples sent from Australia to his premises in England. Because the nests are built reasonably close to the ground the eggs and babies are often prey to reptiles, other birds and feral and domestic cats. Land clearing and development takes away much of their habitat and bushfires are a danger during the summer months. Even so, their conservation status is still considered secure. With bushfires raging throughout much of Australia at the time of writing it is worrying to think about the small birds trapped in their nests and adult birds and animals not able to escape the blaze in time.

The weathered face of Olaf Ruhen A man of vision, gifted with natural leadership and guidance, Olaf inspired many young writers, yours truly included, to reach their dreams. He was reputed not to be demonstrative, showing his love and affection, but on the occasions I was invited to spend time with Olaf and his wife Madeleine at their Mosman home since the sixties, that did not seem to be true. As my father was assassinated in 1945 when I was only six years old, I looked at Olaf as a kind of father figure because of his warmth towards the family and me. Artist Statement
My current paintings are inspired by unspoken words. Messages that have been created over many years, in some cases decades, then some words that are more recent. Words by friends, by family by strangers and some by self. Statements of love, letters of thanks, letters of sadness, political views and sexual references. In some cases, layers of words, letters and numbers displayed in a public space for the viewer to read or ignore. Decades of marks, some acted upon, ignored and some provoking a controversial conversation. A record of silent statement, an image, a thought that may only exist for seconds. Selected words erased, covered up or exposed. My paintings are created in a similar way, thus leaving the viewer to create their own opinion.

EARLY TIMBER INDUSTRY
Campbellville
Big Cedar Logs
TIMBER GETTERS Massive trees were difficult to access and cut down. They required large bullock teams to drag them to dangerous “Chutes” down the mountain, and then rafts of logs floated down creeks and towed to Brisbane. Records show in 1877 the first white man ventured up to a place known as “McCarthy’s Chute”, near the present Mary Cairncross Park at the southern end of the Blackall range. Some timber getters took wives and family with them to these remote locations where
P
they were often left alone in bush camps for weeks at a time. These early pioneers and white settlers observed large groups of aborigines gathering every third year, in February and March to enjoy their Bunya Nut feast and festival.
JAMES CAMPBELL One of the early timber pioneers was James Campbell who arrived in Brisbane from Scotland in 1853 at the age of 23, and set up a building supply business, which became one of the largest in the Commonwealth.
ioneers were embarking on new commercial ventures at that time with Oyster dredging in Pumicestone Passage, and Sugar plantations on Caboolture River and “Morayfield”. Brisbane was growing rapidly and lots of wood was required for construction, so securing, and cutting large hardwood trees provided major opportunities. This was very challenging, tough, lonely and demanding work for those pioneers who ventured into the Blackall Range in search of big Cedar trees. 42

Bullock Wagons Cedar Log
Campbell initially bought timber from the “Getters” in the Blackall Ranges and in 1881 set up his own large Sawmill on Coochin Creek off Pumicestone Passage. This was at its junction with Mellum Creek, a navigable waterway in those days, above the tidal point, where freshwater was available for the Mill boilers. The Mill settlement of “Campbellville” was a thriving business for the next 10 years. As well as the hinterland, hardwood logs were obtained from creeks along Pumicestone Passage and on Bribie Island. There are still some huge old tree stumps on Bribie if you know where to look.
LONDON EXHIBITION TIMBER One huge Red Cedar log required a team of 60 Bullocks to haul it up “Walkers Pinch” near Maleny. Another log over 4 metres long and 5 metres girth, containing over 4000 super feet of timber, was towed to Brisbane and shipped to London to be exhibited at the “Indian & Colonial Exhibition” in 1886. After the Exhibition, the log was offered for sale but there were no buyers as it was beyond the capacity of any equipment in England. Eventually, explosives had to be used to reduce it to manageable pieces. This was a costly lesson for James Campbell & Sons.
REGULAR FEATURES James Campbell & Sons went on to control eleven Sawmills, owned and operated 28 shipping vessels, the Landsboro Hotel and Buderim Mountain Sugar Mill, and supplied pre-fabricated kit homes. Campbellville became a bustling Mill, trading centre and township of over 100 people.
THE CAMPBELL FAMILY The Campbell family were well represented at Campbellville. As well as the founder James Campbell, there were his three sons John Dunmore, George Peter and Charles William holding various positions of authority at the mill. The second manager was George Campbell who was just 17 when he first held that office. John Campbell, the first son of the founder, was elected to the Caboolture Divisional Board in 1883 and was instrumental in having the North Coast Railway line built in 1886. He later became Minister for Railways and represented the Electorate of Moreton. The building of that Railway line led to the demise of Campbellville as a Mill and water transport hub in 1890, and the equipment was relocated to Albion. Money was scarce for the early settlers and a delayed bartering system developed whereby the settlers forwarded timber down to the Mill, after which they received their
food supplies and other necessities, often months later.
CAMPBELLVILLE TOWNSHIP Various sailing cutters carted timber down Pumicestone Passage to Brisbane before the paddle wheeler “Mavis” was built in 1883 to transport timber from Campbellville. A doubleended paddle wheel steamer named “Bribie” was built at Coochin Creek, to run between Brisbane and Caloundra, and tow pontoons of logs and sawn timber to the steamer “Mavis”. At the height of its industry, an article published in “The Queenslander” in 1885, describes it as follows… “The large Mill house, the many houses, sheds the noise from the engines, the wharf and huge cranes caused a scene of bustle and industry. Messrs Campbell have done much for this district in developing its timber resources. One hundred men are on the pay list besides contracts for various purposes, indeed the population of the little Mill Township including wives and youngsters is about 100 souls. A School has been erected by the proprietors, the average attendance at which is 20.” Apart from this brief description, little is known of the location of buildings and houses, which once formed the township of Campbellville. The School was in fact a Provisional School, not being large enough to be classified as a State School. We do know there was a Post Office, which opened in January 1883 for which the postal official received 6 Pounds a year ($12), until it closed in 1891.
BUILDING THE RAILWAY The construction the north coast Railway enabled wider and more efficient transport of Timber. In 1893 the great floods which devastated Brisbane and surrounds, also destroyed what remained of Campbellville, causing creeks to flood and the Pumicestone Passage to silt up to the difficult shallow waterway it is today. A few people did stay on at Campbellville for about three years after the equipment was moved to Albion, and the firm continued logging in the area until about 1910. CAMPBELLVILLE CEMETERY

In April 1966 Forestry workers were clearing a road and firebreak in the area and found some old wooden posts that marked the site of the little cemetery of Campbellville, more than 80 years after the first burial had taken place.
CAMPBELLVILLE CONNECTIONS
Research has revealed the names of 4 of the possible 9 pioneer residents who were buried there.
Mrs Harry Blake - wife of the saw sharpener and Mill Engineer.
NOTHING LEFT TODAY Today all that gives any indication of this once thriving operation at Campbellville is a small sign telling about CAMPBELLVILLE CEMETERY 1880-1893. I took some members of the Historical Society for a visit a few years ago It is not any easy place to find, but drive down “Roys Road” you will see the sign. Also scattered in the bush are a few bricks bearing the name “Campbellville” which would have been made in the Ipswich area.
W.Petersen - all we know is that he was a biggish man. Frank Lovesey - who died suddenly while step dancing
I made a brief mention of Campbellville in one of my recent articles in this newspaper. Several people with interesting connections to Cambellville contacted me. One was Mrs Val Widt of Delaney’s Creek, who is the granddaughter of Frank Assen who worked and had land there in the mid 1880’s. One of his daughters was one of those identified as buried at the cemetery site. There is only one known photo taken at Campbellville showing a group of about ten Mill workers at an unknown date.
Baby Assen - child of Frank Assen, yardman at the mill and owner of 80 acres of land adjoining Coochin creek. It is believed that the headstones marking the graves were wooden, and disintegrated long ago, and the only evidence of a burial site were the hardwood posts bordering the graves found in 1966. 44

BRIBIE CONNECTIONS. John Robins worked at Campbellville with his brother William. William also worked with Frank Assen, (Val Widt’s grandfather) who had a farm nearby, where he met and married his daughter Florence Assen. They married in Caboolture and went to work for James Campbell & Son at Albion. In 1912 William built a holiday cottage on Bribie Island, when the island was first opened up to residents, which was later inherited by his son Charles (Chick). When Charles eventually retired from work, it ended over 100 years of service by the Robins family with James Campbell & Sons.
139 YEARS OF HISTORY The cottage at 49 Toorbul Street, Bongaree is still there today, and still in the family. Charles Robins left the cottage to his two daughters Joan and Rita. Joan still lives on Bribie Island with her husband Jeff Barber, and Sister Rita owns the holiday cottage. CONTINUES OVER PAGE >>

Robins Cottage 49 Toorbul St It is fascinating to uncover this 139-year family connection to the old Campbellville site, with three generations of the Robins family working for almost 100 years for James Campbell & Sons, and their cottage at 49 Toorbul Street still in the family after 107 years. It is quite rewarding when I write something about a piece of history close to Bribie, and little known by anyone, results in what I have been able to write for you in this article. Thanks to Val Widt and Joan (nee Robins) Barber for their photos and information provided for this article.
BRIBIE HOUSES James Campbell & Sons business went on to manufacture various designs of prefabricated houses, one of which was named “The Bribie, examples of which can still be seen on Bribie island today.

Christmas on a Budget
F
or Christmas this year, my family all came to the decision that we were going to forgo Christmas gifts as it was becoming too expensive and we were struggling with what to buy each other. Not only that but we are time poor and there isn’t enough time in the day to spend shopping. As a family, we all decided that we would much prefer that each family member used the money they would have spent on presents for flights and travel arrangements so we could spend Christmas how we should. Together. After all, isn’t that the whole point of Christmas? Be with your loved ones. However, if this is not something you wish to do, there are other ways of making Christmas gifts not only affordable but useful.
How about a DYI project? Get creative, frame a poem or a letter on the person who you are giving a gift to. My sister wrote a beautiful poem for me years ago and I have it proudly hanging on my wall to this day. Cook some biscuits or fudge etc. and wrap them in cellophane with a beautiful bow. The options are endless. Draw names out of a hat and buy one great gift instead of many maybe not so useful ones. Pre-buy gifts when the sales are on and store them away, not only is it less expensive, but you will be prepared. No matter what you choose to do, remember the import things, a gift is great, but memories will last forever, so make that your focus for this Christmas and enjoy the moment.
re-constructing tax records that were lost or damaged, negotiate tax payment plans and negotiate the remission of interest or penalties are some of the offers available. If you know someone who can use this assistance have them call me and I will help.
Sub Office The new sub office is going well with many new clients using my services. They have all been happy with the service (including the couple who caught me out in my nightie) and I look forward to assisting more of my Bribie compatriots.
Christmas I wish all current and prospective clients a very Merry Christmas and New Year. The office will be closed for the season from 20th December until 6th January 2020. Regards, Carolyn Wheeler FCPA Phone: (07) 5496 1156 email: cwheeler@caliph.net.au web: www.cmwheeler.com.au and facebook.com

If you want to get a feed of Flathead head to Turners Camp, Ningi Creek, Bongaree and Bellara. They are chewing on Mullet fillets. I am also being told to head to Red Beach where you will get some good size Whiting. They have also seen some Mackerel and Tuna just a bit from Red Beach, Pilchards are the best bait. If you are heading out to the surfside camp sites, 2nd Lagoon and near the bunkers, they are getting some good size Mackerel, Whiting and a few Flathead. Just need to remember that is getting pretty hot out there so make sure you have plenty of water and sunblock making sure the time at the beach is enjoyable. With the school holidays here, make sure your boats are serviced and safety gear all checked before venturing out in the passage. The staff from Gateway Bribie Adventures would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and thank you for your support throughout the year.

Beach REPORT By Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours Welcome to another beach report from Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours
T
he inland track has been graded however with increased holiday traffic it will cut up again soon. Along the Northern Access track, the bushland that had been so badly burnt as a result of the fires is now well in recovery and a lush green spectacle. The 8th Avenue car park Woorim to the beach is still soft and rough and with more traffic, it will get worse, so buckle up and enjoy the ride. If you drive too soon before or after the top of the tide, the soft sand will soon become your enemy. This week we recovered 2 vehicles with burnt out clutches caused by driving in soft sand. Plan your day, your dog stays with friends, check your permit and make sure it is in date. Let tyres down to 20PSI, if you’re a small vehicle don’t drive in deep ruts left by other large 4x4s, take plenty of drinking water, but a little tip, if you get bogged and you have extra water on board you may get out of the bog by pouring a little water around your wheels. This compacts the sand enough to allow you to get out, remember wheel spin is not your friend. Please take care when driving on the beach, it’s nice
to drive on and you’ll notice the lagoons are dry, just don’t drive in them, they are a restricted area. Always remember if you do get stuck you can call us on 0439083868 and we will come and get you out. We are on duty over the Christmas New Year period, the beach will be very busy over these holidays so be careful, lots of extra people will be around, especially children. The beach and inland track are main roads so you will need to observe speed signs, don’t use a substance or drink and drive, stay out of restricted areas, take your rubbish home as some would like to see the beach closed to 4x4s, don’t give them any more ammunition. Brumbies and wild boars have been seen lately, don’t try to approach them, you can shoot them with your camera but stay in your vehicle, they’ll go away. For those that don’t want to take their vehicle into the salt, we’ll take you for an inexpensive 5 hr tour in one of our ex-army tour trucks, keep you refreshed and give you lunch for less than $75. So get out there and enjoy our piece of a gorgeous slice of paradise!!! From the Gateway Discovery Tours team would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

CRIME REPORT
WEEKLY WRAP BRIBIE ISLAND has only just set up his shop, being in business on the Island for only just 6mths and has already been targeted by thieves. He has had banknotes predecimal and decimal, early bank notes as in $1 and $2 notes, Commonwealth Australia notes, most in mint condition stolen. It is not just the cost of replacing the glass and the loss of stock, but he also has to pay for security setups as well now. As a new business, this has been very hard on Ray who takes such pride in his shop and is completely distraught that this could happen on our Island.

Not a nice way to start the Christmas Season. Ray has been in the industry for over 30 years and this is the first time he has ever been broken into, even though he has had shops in Brisbane. MOVIE REVIEW
THE GOOD LIAR By Chris Connolly “The Good Liar” is a film that takes its audience by surprise. Its main characters are Betty McLeish, played by Helen Mirren and Roy Courtney, played by Ian McKellen. Mirren and McKellen, teamed together for the first time, deliver performances that will captivate and intrigue.
deception and vengeance into its storyline. Although the film’s director, Bill Condon, has been criticised for contriving the subplot to give the storyline undeserved depth, I disagree. Admittedly, Condon has layered the film heavily with context in its second half. Rather than allowing that to contrive its ending, Condon engages his viewers in such a way that they will want to dissect the film long after the credits roll.
Set in England, it is 2009 and we meet Betty who is delightfully engaged in creating her online profile for a dating website. YOUR SAY

Dear Editor,
Dear Richard
Renewable energy options.
Firstly, a huge thank you for your awesome input in the Bribie Islander contributing to the great success with Faulty Towers Dining Experience for Rotary’s World’s Greatest Meal to End Polio Now. As the World has had to become more vigilant as the increase of polio occurs every dollar we contribute to the Rotary Foundation provided a safer world. Anne Matthews and Peter Sheehan gave every ounce of energy in the name of Rotary to secure vaccinations for all. Polio is “but a plane ride away” made more evident as we meet the challenges of Measles outbreaks.
Thank you, Trevor Mann, for asking the question and thank you Tony Longland for your reply. I am not a non-believer because renewable energy is a reality. I am somewhat disappointed the proponents become very vague about what happens when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind don’t blow, i.e. at night when an enormous load kicks in, be it lighting of all sorts and power, domestic and industrial. Think about your home. The alternatives have been exploited by the carpetbaggers to little effect. The tide generator in South Australia is a failure and becoming a man-made artificial reef. (some side benefit). The greens will prevent virtually anything to do with water be it hot rocks and hydroelectricity. As far as batteries go consider a car battery and imagine the size of a battery required to feed a city. Nuclear is a simple option but forget that. Unfortunately, the renewable energy zealots appear to be in too much of a hurry to close down reliable power sources with a “don’t you worry about that mentality”. Paul Mc Ellister, Bongaree. 62
The Bribie Islander continues to become a magazine of the greatest value to the community and reaches around the world providing information, knowledge and gives the community the opportunity to participate in life on Bribie Island and encourages visitors to also participate. The Contributors, Anne Matthews, Elaine Lutton, Barry Clarke take the reader on some amazing journeys as do all of the contributors. the writer the freedom of speech a unique quality as we live through the written words privacies requirements, codes of conduct and copyright laws. Once again congratulations and thank you William Peacock OAM, Bribie.
Dear Editor, Pumped storage hydroelectricity. Thank you for publishing Tony Longland’s analysis of our power supplies. I
have been aware of all the alternatives he mentions for quite some time. However, I was disappointed to notice that Tony didn’t mention the current pumpstorage facility, part of the Wivenhoe Dam, which South East Queensland has been enjoying for many years. It is only small, but has helped reduce our power-shedding blackouts. H.Beneke, Banksia Beach.

n todays rushed and hectic lifestyle, we tend to forget the simple joys of gardening. It doesn’t
have to be a prizewinning garden, just something that brings you joy and helps relieve the stress of lic# 1050259

everyday life. We are not all green thumbs so let’s start with some simple gardening tips.
1. Start Small Even if you live in a unit, limited space, you can always use pots and containers to start your gardening experience. Even if you start with herbs on your windowsill, it will not only benefit you with having fresh herbs, it will save you money as well. You are also less likely to forget it as you are in your kitchen at least once a day.
2. Seasonal Plants Not all plants suit our climate and even if they do, they are not all year round. Maybe start with some succulents, they tend to survive most season here. Do a bit of research on the hardiest plants for our region.

gregw@bribiebuilding.com.au www.bribiebuilding.com.au
3. Start With Beginner Friendly Plants When we start of a new project, people tend to go above and beyond their capabilities. Gardening isn’t quite as easy as it sounds.
Not all of us are born with a green thumb. Bust the best thing is, like all things, you can always learn. So, don’t go in hard, you will feel defeated if it doesn’t go to plan. Start small and work your knowledge base of gardening up.
4. Just Like Us, Plants Need Water It is hard to get the balance right. Have I watered it too much? Does it need more water? Easiest way to determine this is simply stick your finger in the pot and push it in the dirt about an inch. If it is damp, don’t water. If it’s dry, time for a drink. Don’t drown them, just keep your soil moist.
5. Old School Tricks When you are starting off, there is no need to rush out and by every plant enhancer on offer. There are lots of gardening hacks you can use. Tea leaves, bananas, seaweed, eggshells…the list goes on. This will not only save you money, it will not have any chemicals and be complete organic. So, get out there in the sun and enjoy your garden and the peace it will bring you!!!

Home Holiday Safety Tips
1
. Don’t leave your valuables in view. Close your blinds if your Christmas tree is in view or move your tree to a spot that can’t be seen by opportunistic thieves. As much as it looks pretty in the window, it is like a red flag saying shop here, we even gift wrap.
3
. Keep all your travel plans off social media. Wait until you are back home, then post all your lovely photos of your adventures. Do not advertise your house is unattended.
4
. Get rid of all your Christmas gift boxes, if they are piled up out by your bin, you are basically advertising what they can steal.
5
. If possible, keep a light on, sensor lights are great, but lights on a timer are even better. There are many solar lights on the market as well. Utilize these, light up the area.

Outdoor Living On Bribie, we are lucky enough to have warm weather for
most of the year enabling us to make the most of our outdoor areas.
Have a good look at your outdoor area and work out what you will be using the space for. Are you hosting summer BBQs? Or using the space mostly for alfresco
dining. Or is your space simply a nice relaxing spot to relax and unwind with a good book. If you have a large area, try to separate areas into

Keep your cooking areas separate from your lounging areas as not only will it be easier for the chef to move around; your guests won’t die from smoke inhalation if your chef isn’t a great cook. You will also need to make sure you have areas that have some shaded spots. In this heat, it is essential for outdoor living. You can use shade sails, umbrellas or awnings, depending on your style and space of your home. Colour your deck with bright cushions, potted plants, and greenery. Herb gardens not only look great but can be used when you
are cooking your BBQ, fresh is best and is also visually appealing. Light up your zone with strings of fairy lights, mason jars with candles in them or even electric
candles can look great reducing fire risks. Citronella candles are great as well as they are dual purpose and let’s face it, one way to ruin a great night is to be consistently
slapping away at yourself. So, start planning your outdoor space and look forward to a beautiful, calm and relaxing space to enjoy the whole year through!

They also have better ventilation than ensembles which can lead to mould, and a bed base will elevate your mattress to a comfortable height that will make life easier on your joints. Road Safety at Christmas time

T
his time of year is one of the most high risk times on Australia Roads with many people hitting the road to attend Christmas parties, end of year celebrations, and heading towards the coast for a well-deserved break. Driver’s must remember that travelling during holiday periods can be
riskier because of increased traffic volumes, congestion, tiredness, people driving in unfamiliar environments, and a higher number of people who are driving under the influence of alcohol. Unfortunately, road accidents and fatalities over the Christmas period are often significantly

Plan ahead and Be Flexible. Before you get into your vehicle and onto Australia’s highways, take the time to plan your trip. Plan which route you are going to take and identify the places you are going to stop and rest along the way. If possible, plan to travel in non-peak traffic and congestion times, and do not plan to drive for more than 2 hours without a break. Take the time to
recover at your rest spots.
2.
Be Alert to Changes. Check relevant traffic and travel information when you plan your Christmas/Holiday road trip. This may help you plan a route around traffic congestion and road works.
4.
Drive to the Conditions. “Conditions” doesn’t just mean the weather conditions. Also consider the traffic conditions, speed limits, state laws, the children in the car, and your ability to drive.
6.
Be Aware of Fatigue. Tiredness is a major cause of fatal accidents on Australian roads. At this time of the year, many people are driving long distances on unfamiliar roads. You may choose to leave in the early hours of the morning to avoid traffic, which means you are driving when your body is programmed to sleep. Australia Wide First Aid advises you not to drive when you would

worse than the rest of the year. Tragically, a percentage of these accidents and fatalities are often preventable. Before you, your family and friends get behind the wheel this festive season (or any time of the year) make sure you are ready, and able, to drive. As Christmas is often a time for travel, particularly long distances to reach family and friends, Australia Wide First Aid have highlighted a few tips for safe driving this festive season:
