“W

e had a solar roof fan installed by Bribie Island Solar at the beginning of this summer. It has cooled down our kitchen and house to the extent where we rarely (if ever) need to turn on any ceiling fans. We are very impressed by the difference this roof fan has made in our home.” Alan Train, Sandstone Point.

“T

he 2 fans we bought from Bribie Islander Solar are Working beautifully, well worth the money, we are using less electricity as the air con is not getting used much at all, thoroughly recommend to anyone, well worth it, money well spent and we have bought another 2 fans for the other side of the house.” Arthur & Eileen, Sandstone Point. s I mentioned on the phone yesterday, I am really pleased with the 2 solar roof vents that you supplied and installed for us. “They were fitted this morning and we went out at about 12:10 pm and I didn’t get back until 3:40 pm and I was really surprised at the difference in the house, it wasn’t stuffy at all and for a minute I thought I had left the small back bedroom air conditioner on or the door was open. I didn’t have to charge around opening everything up as usual, I emptied the car first then opened up. I am really pleased with the result”. Cheers, Sandra. Sandstone Point.

welcome... Dear Readers,

On a happier note, we have 2 teenage girls who are overcoming life threatening illness and are getting better each day. We would like to wish Jazmin Abraham and Jessica Perks a fast and speedy recovery and all the best in the future. We also would like to welcome our new graphic designer Debbie Hunter to the team. Unfortunately that means we have to say a farewell for now to Lisa Wendland, who is travelling

Australia with her beautiful family for a year. Thank you Lisa for the amazing job you have done, we wish you all the best. I have to put in my favourite Australia day photo as well. This sums up what Aussie pride is on our beautiful Island home. Take care, Stay safe.

DEATH CAFE The sound of the name DEATH CAFE could be offputting for some - but not all.

tablecloths and the libraries best china. Participants were invited to help themselves to tea, coffee, biscuits and some delicate muffins. Then it was down to business. Funeral staff were on hand to answer questions, and to help participants understand what’s involved in planning a funeral. No hard sell. Simply a wonderful opportunity to get some answers to questions we

seldom think about - until we are faced with the death of a loved one. Burial or cremation, direct cremation, or body donation to a local university are some of the options. Tissue and organ donation, giving a needy person a second chance at life. What better gift than the gift of life? Advanced Health Directive: Do you have one. doctor, aware of your end of life wishes? Have you made a will? Everyone should have a will - regardless of age. If you have any assets, no matter how small - you need to make a will. Otherwise, you leave it up to others, as to who gets what. Something you might not agree with had you survived. This is by no means a morbid subject. It’s a fact of life: we are all going to die. Hopefully later rather than sooner. The best thing we can all do for those left behind is to leave a “roadmap”. A guide as to how we want

our possessions disposed of. How we want our end of life health issues dealt with. What kind of funeral - or not, would we like. So many questions, too few answers. The whole idea of Death Cafe is to get everyone talking about what is often seen as a taboo subject; death. So, next time the library puts on this event - go. Taking steps now to arrange your end of life wishes, might well save your successors, a lot of work and heartache, in making decisions we could easily make while we are alive.

Or you could decide you are fit enough and just go for the coffee and cake and chat with friends. There is a dinner every

month trying all the various eateries on the Island. There is a fishing group who meet up for a BBQ breakfast before heading off to fish. I couldn’t possibly tell you how many fish they catch!!!! There is a monthly meeting with an excellent outside speaker and we have had some terrific speakers.

In February we have a formal dinner party to celebrate 30 years of this amazingly successful club.

We meet at the RSL on the second Tuesday of the month. If you would like to come along just ring; Gerry on 0457 305 391.

Jazmin’s Recovery Update

As most of you are aware Jazmin Abraham suffered a massive brain bleed on 13th November 2019. This resulted in stroke-like symptoms with the right side of her body being paralysed. She was put in an induced coma and on the ventilator to let her brain recover for two weeks, they then reduced the sedating medication to try and wake her up, no one knew what deficits she would have out of this. Slowly she woke up over the next week, she couldn’t speak or communicate and wasn’t able to move her right side and we didn’t know if this was permanent or not so the future was unclear. Within the next two weeks we started to see her raise her eyebrows at her siblings, smile, laugh and try to speak, words were still not coming out which caused some frustration. With physio, she started to slowly move her right side and surprising all of us when she was getting physio on her leg, she spontaneously moved her right arm.

HEALTH, WELLBEING & COMMUNITY

Over the next few weeks, she had built up so much strength in her arms and legs that she can now walk with the support of an AFO (splint) and a crutch, only using a wheelchair for long distances or when she is tired. Her speech is slowly improving but it’s only at 50% as a lot of stuff she refers to as ‘thing’. She can understand everything and can write most words, but there is still a blockage from the brain to her mouth. Jaz is hoping to return to her love of cadets but not at full capacity like she once was. We will be there, however on their first night back on 31st January. Jaz won’t be returning to school for a while yet. After 10 weeks (as of 22nd January) Jaz is now in Day hospital where she stays with mum Dani at Ronald McDonald House. She attends the hospital for therapy

appointments and has been about to go home for a night on weekends. Thank you, everyone, for your love and support to Jaz and her family.

Winning Ticket Jessica Perks from Albany Creek has been attending The Lions Camp Quality. Christmas Picnic for many years as she has been fighting cancer. Thankfully she had just been told that she was in remission .She attended the Camp Quality picnic just before Christmas and decided to buy a ticket in the Lions Christmas stocking and to her great surprise her ticket was the winning one just in time for Christmas. The Lions who delivered the prize to her home said “what a feel good story” she was so excited and thanked the Lions for Camp Quality and for all the good work they do. The team at The Bribie Islander 12

Magazine couldn’t think of a more deserving winner and wish Jessica all the best for the future.

BUSY FINGERS

It seems that the year is travelling at its usual pace - FAST, we have just seen the back of Christmas and the same can now be said about Australia Day. We were very pleased with the results of our Christmas Break as when we returned there were only a few items on the footpath, and most of the bags thrown over the fence had remained intact and didn’t get wet. We did have a problem at 5 am on 8th January when a couple decided to toss items over the fence including an open box containing Lego, some old toast, dirty jocks and cigarette butts. Once thrown over the fence the Lego went everywhere and we were pleased to see on the camera that the couple enjoyed this scene immensely. It is amazing what amuses some people when others find it quite disturbing, and uncalled for besides being unhygienic. When we opened the shop on the 6th January we had so many people bringing their preloved items in, we really appreciated their patience in keeping their donations until we opened again. Our volunteers were kept very busy sorting through everything and putting it out on display in the shop as soon as possible. Due to your generosity and our nimble volunteers, we have managed to have many sales over the last few weeks, so always remember to check out the blackboard at the entrance when you come shopping, you will find the specials of the day listed there.

THANK YOU

In my last article, I thanked three retiring committee members who had been with us for a long time, during this period we had made many improvements and been able to support the island even more. It is with deep regret that another committee member Judith Veritz has had to resign from the committee as well as the shop due to unforeseen circumstances. Judith has been with the shop for nearly 20 years and is our longest-serving volunteer, she enjoyed her time with us as she was giving

something back to her community which she felt was important. She became a member of the committee over 6 years ago and was involved in all our improvements and changes. Judith also gave many hours to another island charity while she working with us, Judith will be really missed at Busys and we all wish her well for the future. Recently I was invited to a celebration at the Bribie Island Aged Care. Three years ago we installed a special gym for the residents; the equipment is run by air pressure and is less strenuous on the body. The head physio Craig and his staff assessed the residents who wished to use the gym and set up individual programs for them. The celebration was for 3 lovely residents who had reached milestones for going to the gym, 2 residents who I will call Jack and Jill reached 500 visits and were presented with great T-shirts. These 2 enjoy their visits to the gym to keep fit and have a chat with other residents who go for a workout. Another resident who I will call Ms Determined had achieved 400 visits, this wonderful “forever young” lady ignored medical advice that she would not be able to walk again, went to the gym and when her name was called she got out of her chair and walked with the aid of a walker to collect her award. I must admit it brought a tear to my eye and I can honestly say that out of all the Thank You Busy Fingers functions I have attended this one was the most gratifying. There are many volunteers at Busy Fingers who give some of their time to help raise funds for the many associations on the island and I thank them all sincerely for making events like this happen. We always have room for a few more volunteers to help us, if you can spare a few hours please give Sonia our

manager a call on 34081014. We are a few ladies short at present on a few days of the week, so even if you can only do a morning or afternoon please keep us in mind. You can make new friends and help island residents at the same time.

REQUEST FOR PRESENTATIONS AND DONATIONS

If you are a member of an island club or association and require assistance please let us know. We try to assist all not for profit associations and sporting clubs, we also assist the Police, SES, VMR and the BI Hospice. Our President Karen is quite happy to come along to your club and present our aims and goals and how your club can apply for assistance. Please call 3410 1920 or email busyfingers1@ bigpond.com if you wish to have a presentation or if you wish to apply for a grant of assistance. When applying for assistance please include a contact name and phone number and also a current equipment quote, tell us a bit about your association/club and membership and why you need the equipment you are requesting. Please be aware we only deal with island associations and groups, not individuals. We hope all the mums, dads and grandparents out there are enjoying the “Return to School” rest period and are looking forward to the next 10 weeks before the Easter holidays. As usual, we will be closed for the 4 day Easter Break. I will close by thanking our staff and volunteers for all their hard work and our customers for their support, also Richard and the Bribie Islander family for their continued support. I hope to see you in the shop soon. Sandra

BUSH FIRE APPEAL ... The Bribie Island and surrounding communities have been reaching out to help those affected by the horrific bushfires and our countries ongoing drought. From young kids doing it on their own, to our local business, everybody is keen to pitch in and help. So, as a community lets rally behind these fundraisers to support the people and animals affected by devastating bushfires and droughts.

ALY, ARTIST GIFT FOR THE ANIMALS

A

ly Grahame is one of the loveliest women I have been fortunate to meet since moving to the Island. Aly herself has only been a resident for the past 3 years but in that time has supported the locals by donating her beautiful paintings to be sold or raffled for various fundraisers. Aly has been painting since she was a teenager, self-taught with a passion for creating stunning artworks. Aly is a very busy lady. She paints in her spare time as she also works at Goodwin Family Medical Centre and has also done a few small paintings

for the patients there. Aly has a huge heart and has a love for animals which lead her to personally taking on 2 rescue dogs. As you can imagine, the bushfires have devastated animal lover Aly, so this is why she is donating one of her artworks to be raffled off and all proceeds to go to the National Bushfire Appeal, RSPCA

The Bribie Islander

The tickets are available at Woorim’s Newsagency $2 each, or 3 for $5, or 6 for $10.

We would love to see everyone get behind Aly and support her in her fundraising efforts. Good on you Aly!!

ounded in 2001 The Bribie Gleemen has become a highly regarded Gentlemen Songsters Choir meeting weekly for rehearsals, singing both past and recent songs across a range of formats. Over the years we have undertaken close to 400 concert performances for various organisations and associations. As a “not for profit’ group we have donated to many charities and annually hold a couple of large public concerts with a major part of the proceeds going to local charities. Our first annual concert for 2019 was on an Irish theme in April at the Recreation Hall on Bribie Island and was attended by over 150 persons, we collected close to $2,000 for local charities. Our second annual concert for 2019 at the Recreation Hall in October under our Musical Director Trevor Vincent was a great success and also drew a very healthy audience. As a result, we were able to give a cheque to Toc H Bribie Island to help them in their quest to bring

several young people from the hard-hit rural areas to Bribie for a holiday. Also, we were part of the Combined Choirs Concert on Sunday 8 December when we joined forces with three other local choirs to provide carols and Christmas songs to a large audience. That concert was able to contribute $2,700.00 for local respite support services. Our major work is undertaken across the care, lifestyle and health sectors where we will typically undertake a one hour concert for a client and seek to recover our costs. The range of clients we have entertained include Sunnymeade Park Managed Estate, The Village Redcliffe, Boulton Clark, Church of Christ, Bribie Bowls Club, Uniting Church, Regis Group, Anglican Church, Golden Age Respite, RSL Care, Seasons Group, St Pauls Lutheran, Embracia, Pacific Harbour G & CC, Rotary and Probus.

The Magic Of Makayli

Toorbul &

Donnybrook

Pensioners’ Club FUNDRAISING LUNCHEON

By Cherrie Wilson Makayli is a 12 yr. old lovely young lady who is devastated by the fires that have been raging in our country and has decided to try to help out by raising money for those affected. And this is how it all came about. Makayli has been sewing ever since requiring surgery after a netball injury early last year. Her mum Cherie thought this would be a good distraction for her to relieve the boredom. Makayli started with making scrunchies (hair accessories) and she would post them on her Instagram page as well as selling them to the kids at school. She then expanded her skills and started making lavender bags, heat packs, crayon booklets, tissue covers and anxiety hearts for kids nervous about starting school or going through a tough time. Makayli was then approached by Blonde & Beyond a local Bribie Island hairdressers to display and sell her scrunchies in their salon. When the bush fires started she wanted to donate and thought the best way to do that was to have a pop-up stall, selling all her handmade items with 50% being donated. Unfortunately due to the bad weather she only raised $105 for her chosen charity, Wires. She’s also donating 50% of her latest stall which was held at the Bribie Island Cinema for ladies night on Thursday 23rd. DROUGHT and FLOODING RAIN A Public talk on Bribie Island Barry Clark - U3A Public Relations.

Australia is certainly a land of contrast.

do with “WATER IN AUSTRALIA” on Friday 28th February here on Bribie.

In the last few months, we have had either too much, or too little, of too many things. We can blame ourselves or the Government for Climate Change……….or we can recognise that climate and weather is a big picture item and will always be unpredictable. However, we are all vitally interested and dependant on WATER for everything in life, and should perhaps understand more about it. Appreciation of the Water situation for Australia, Queensland and specifically for Bribie Island is important. Retired civil and environmental engineer Phil Williams will give a public presentation about all things to

Australia’s well-known poem “Our Country” summed up Australia as a land of droughts and flooding rains, which is very topical, given our longrunning drought, lack of water, and extensive and devastating bush fires, and then flooding rains. Things may have changed dramatically again by the time you read this.

PUBLIC PRESENTATION The presentation will cover many aspects of Water in Australia of interest to all, including climatic zones and rainfall, water resources, river systems, artesian water, urban water, desalination, recycling, dams, rural water, irrigation, salinity as well as a brief look at some major projects such as the Snowy Mountains scheme, the Ord River / Lake Argyle project and the current debacle with the Murray – Darling Basin.

The presentation is at U3A on 28th February at 1 pm at the U3A Community Hall on First Avenue... It is open to members and the general public for entry of just $2 which includes afternoon tea and a chance to meet the speaker. Speaker Phil Williams will also present information about an often discussed subject, to divert large quantities of water from North Queensland to create new irrigation areas in Western Queensland. The “New Bradfield Scheme” has been around since it was first proposed in 1938, and is again on the political agenda in Queensland. This presentation will be of great interest to everyone. Space is limited and booking is essential. Book by adding your name on the sheet at U3A, or phone U3A during office hours on 3408 1450 and ask for your names to be put on the list.

Most recently, the award-winning national documentary series Australian Story filmed an episode on Fiona, which rated over 1.3 million viewers.

The Legend of St. Valentine

T

he history of Valentine’s Day– and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance and that St. Valentine’s Day, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Still, others insist that it was Saint Valentine of Terni, a bishop, who was the true namesake of the holiday. He, too, was beheaded by Claudius II outside Rome.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl–

possibly his jailor’s daughter–who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and– most importantly–romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France. While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial–which probably occurred around A.D. 270–others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or Lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. They would then strip the goat’s hide into strips, dip them into the sacrificial blood and take to the

streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city’s bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage. Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity but was outlawed—as it was deemed “un-Christian”–at the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day. It was not until much later, however, that the day became definitively associated with love. During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance. The English poet Geoffrey Chaucer was the first to record St. Valentine’s Day as a day of romantic celebration in his 1375 poem “Parliament of Foules,” writing, “For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne’s day / Whan every foul cometh ther to choose his mate.”

In Roman mythology, Cupid is the son of Venus, the goddess of love. In Greek mythology, he was known as Eros and was the son of Aphrodite. According to Roman mythology, Cupid fell madly in love with Psyche despite his mother’s jealousy over Psyche’s beauty. While he married her, he also told her never to look at him. He visited her only at night. Her sisters convinced her to look at Cupid despite his warning. So she lit a lamp one night so she could see him. Cupid then left her. Psyche wandered aimlessly for a time, searching in vain for Cupid. She happened upon the temple of Venus. Venus, looking to destroy her, gave Psyche a series of perilous tasks, each one

more difficult and previous than preceding one. Her final task was to deliver a little box to the underworld and get some of the beauty of Proserpine. She was warned not to open the box. But again, curiosity overcame her and she opened the box. There was nothing in the box but deadly slumber. Cupid, who really loved Psyche all the while, came upon her lifeless body. He forgave Psyche and swept the deadly slumber back into the box. The gods then made Psyche a goddess. At this point, it is appropriate to say “and they all lived happily ever after”. Oh, by the way, if he hits you with one of his arrows, you too will live happily ever after! Did you know? Cupid is sometimes shown blindfolded. Why? Because love is blind!

birds. They also eat small mammals, lizards, and any kind of carrion they can find. At present they are living off the fat of the land since our Slovenian neighbours, who seem to feed the entire Island wildlife, admit to feeding them hen’s eggs, which they swallow whole, and at Christmas, raw steak! My husband and I have been watching the group to try and work out the relationships between them. It was obvious that the two larger ones were very aggressive towards each other when they met‌.a bit of eye-balling followed by head nodding, then the winner charged

whilst the less dominant turned tail and ran for his life until he had been seen off the premises, for now. Two males, we thought. One evening we inadvertently got involved in one of these spats. The two dragons were eying each other off nearby when they suddenly made a rush for it right under where we were sitting having our peaceful evening drink. We both yelled, and our legs shot up as two angry male monitors sorted things out. Neither of us fancied being in the way of those teeth, although but to be fair, it seemed to be mainly display. Still, we needed that drink. One afternoon, early in the New Year, romance was obviously in the air. I saw the more dominant male approaching the smaller monitor in quite a different manner to that which he approached the other male. They seemed happy together. Then he boldly covered her and began mating vigorously. As he was at least twice as heavy as her, I can imagine this might have caused some discomfort, but she did not seem to mind. In fact, she stayed around, and they

continued to mate over the next hour and a half much to the disapproval of the local corellas who screamed from the treetops their opinion of this lascivious behaviour. I might have had some difficulty in explaining this to my young grandsons but that was their father’s job. Apparently, we can expect the female to lay her eggs in a termite nest or hollow log, and hopefully, the eggs will hatch in a few months if not discovered and eaten by another Monitor. A diet of steak and eggs seems to have increased the testosterone level of the male. I hope they continue to stay around but whether my neighbour will continue to feed them is a moot point. She has just shown me a nasty bite on her hand. The large monitor had confused a tasty piece of steak with her middle finger, and she had a nasty tear wound. She applied first aid, but I felt antibiotics would be called for, but this was a public holiday, and she did not fancy sitting in a doctor’s surgery for hours even if she could find one open.

his story. I’m hoping to start a “meet the lady tradie” also, so if there are any ladies out there that would like to know more, give me a ring. I’ll be looking for any female in business, a hairdresser, photographer, beautician, mechanic, doctor, chippy, whatever your trade is, I thought it would be nice to see the women in business highlighted in a feature as well.

In the event, common sense and pain prevailed. Her husband drove her to the Emergency Dept. of the local hospital where she provided something different for the young doctors. “Never had one of these before!” was the general consensus. After a Tetanus shot, bandaging, and a course of antibiotics, she was released with advice about staying out of range whilst feeding wild animals. This morning she seems none-theworse for her adventure although I must say, I am treating our “pets” with increased respect.

COMMUNITY

With such a rich History...

BRIBIE deserves a

VISION for the

FUTURE Barry Clark Bribie Island Historical Society

I get some nice feedback from readers of my regular History articles. Old-timers and new timers like to be reminded of things about Bribie’s past. If you are a resident or visitor reading this article, my guess is that you have come to Bribie Island because it is different.

We know that things must change with time, but it would be sad to think that Bribie Island would just drift into being just like everywhere else.

Within a few years, it became a booming tourist destination, with thousands coming to camp and fish, and enjoy the isolation and environment.

This article reflects on aspects of the past and raises the question about what will the future be like.

If you do not know where you are going ….any road takes you there. Bribie should have a “Vision” for the future, to ensure it remains a special place in 100 years. Bribie Island has the unique distinction of being the place where the first white man landed, in what is now Queensland, after the penal settlement in Sydney.

For the next 50 years, Bribie remained isolated, self-sufficient, creative, imaginative and independent. It developed its special charm because it had to, in order to succeed... It was often called a “Zoo without a Fence” and sometimes jokingly as “The Three D’s”... Drunks, Dogs and Defactos. When the population was just a few hundred there were many exceptional people here, who added to the charm of the place.

Matthew Flinders landed on July 16th 1799 with his aboriginal companion Bongaree, his cat “Trim” and a small crew aboard the sloop “Norfolk”.

For over 100 years people have been coming to Bribie Island because it has a unique character and strong community spirit... Of course, it has changed over the years, for many different reasons, and the march of progress and people’s requirements do change things. However, the reasons that brought you here, and many thousands before www.thebribieislander.com.au

It was then that Bribie was opened up as a unique tourist destination for steamship excursions from Brisbane.

BRIBIE ALWAYS “SPECIAL”

you over the years, is its special charm, that might be in danger of being lost.

Twenty four years later 3 castaway convicts were marooned here in 1823 before the Moreton Bay Penal Colony was established at Brisbane in 1825. The new Colony of Queensland was separated from NSW in 1859, but very few people lived on Bribie Island until 1912.

HISTORY

PROGRESS & DEVELOPMENT For many years, there was talk and political promises of building a bridge to Bribie, and this eventually happened in 1963. This was a major event in the history of Bribie, but when the new Bridge was about to be opened it was announced that there would be a charge to cross it. Bribie Holiday Poster 1950’s

BRIBIE WORTH THE EFFORT It was a three-hour trip, and often a rough boat ride from Brisbane, but Bribie attracted rich and poor to this unique location. Bribie was part of the large Caboolture Shire, and while it was the closest town, there was no road access. A trip from Bribie to Caboolture for the first honorary Bribie Councillor in the 1930s took two days, by boat and train via Brisbane. Caboolture Shire was much bigger back then and stretched from Kedron Brook to Maroochydore River. Over the years, various areas sought their independence, and the Shires of Maroochy, Kilcoy, Pine Rivers, Redcliffe and Caloundra were formed. Bribie remained part of the then smaller Caboolture Shire…..a unique and popular destination …..Which thrived on its isolation and character.

A “Toll” of 10 shillings had to be paid to cross the bridge, equivalent to about $15 in today’s money. That huge and unexpected imposition limited the anticipated population and business growth for several years.

COUNCIL AMALGAMATION In 2009, Government amalgamated the three Councils of Redcliffe, Pine Rivers and Caboolture into one enormous Moreton Bay Regional Council. Bribie Island became a very small part of a very big Regional Council. The justification for amalgamation was to achieve cost savings, the economy of scale and improved services, but after 10 years I do not know how much of this has been achieved. Some other places that were amalgamated have since reverted to their previous status.

Bribie Toll 10 shilling ticket For many years, the Council rates for Bribie were disproportionally higher than the rest of the Shire. In 1967 Bribie residents made another attempt to succeed from Caboolture and become its own Shire.

When Bribie had a resident population of just a few hundred people in the 1930’s, Bribie had an honorary Councillor. Over the years, as the population grew to about 1800, Bribie had two elected Councillors representing them on the Caboolture Council. Now, with a population well over 20,000, Division 1 has just one Councillor representing a much larger geographic area of Bribie and the mainland.

As a result of military installation built in World War 2, and the increased popularity of the motor car, a rough road was built from Caboolture to a car ferry at Sandstone Point to Bribie.

Once again, that was unsuccessful, and Bribie remained part of Caboolture Shire Council for many more years until amalgamation changed things again.

This resulted in the Steamship trips ending in 1953, but Bribie remained a very popular destination as the residents and visitors had created their own successful economy.

The bridge toll remained for 12 years until 1975 when the bridge had been paid for.

However, Bribie Island remains the unique jewel in the crown for so many reasons.

In the bicentennial year, 1988 Bribie staged another Succession parade as part of the celebrations.

We are soon to have a Council election, but we won’t be voting for a community “Vision” for the future of Bribie.

Bribie always wanted to be independent and establish its own Shire and made unsuccessful attempts to do so in 1913, 1931 and 1967.

This is a challenging job for anyone, with Bribie situated on the boundary of a large Regional Council.

RECOGNISING BRIBIE’s HERITAGE. In 2008, I established the Bribie Island Historical Society when I became fascinated by the rich Heritage and History of this unique island, although none of it was visible. Even our world-famous resident, eccentric and recluse artist Ian Fairweather had no visible signage.

HISTORY CONTINUED I replaced a plaque at the site of his grass hut residence. We have since had a Museum built which displays some of our rich Heritage, and Fairweathers amazing life story. I installed numerous bronze plaques and signage around Bongaree foreshore, designed and printed free Heritage Walk brochures We conduct regular Heritage Walks at Bongaree and the WW2 relics, and I know how popular these walks and brochures are. I don’t expect everyone to be interested in local history, but it certainly adds value to being here, and a respect and understanding of just why this place is special.

For the same cost, we could surely have a fleet of smaller vehicles running to all suburbs and required locations at more regular intervals. I guess it is just a matter of time before we have Parking Meters.

BRIBIE RESIDENT POPULATION. Bribie Postcode 4507 has the highest percentage of people over 65 years of age than any postcode in Australia. However, this will probably change over time, but this is a unique aspect of Bribie that should be recognised in any “Vision” of the future.

VISION for the FUTURE We are all different, and all have different views about how Bribie should be in future. Many people are urging for a new and bigger bridge to be built. Most Bridges and Tunnels built these days have a Toll. How would we feel if a new bridge were to have a toll? Should we go on building more roads for more cars? Perhaps Bribie should have an efficient and effective public transport system that meets current and future community needs. Almost 100 years ago thousands of people came and went by Steamship from Brisbane to Bribie. They were transported across the island by basic busses to the Ocean Beach. That was the closest surf beach to Brisbane in those days. Today we have empty buses driving around Bribie all day to a timetable that does not recognise our needs or help to reduce short car trips, parking and congestion. 36

www.thebribieislander.com.au

With the current significant developments already underway, and the anticipated construction of medium-rise apartments, the population is set to increase by up to 40% in the next few years. Add to this the significant number of subdivisions and development already happening on the mainland close to Bribie, there will be many more people living on and visiting the island in the next few years. What are the things that are essential to ensure that Bribie remains a unique place?

Many elements of a future Vision could include Community Services, Employment, Recreation, Transport, Environment, Heritage and of course Life-style. Without a plan, it is likely that things will just drift along, largely driven by developers, and Bribie will become just another seaside suburb. I think that would be a pity… ...how about you? If we don’t recognise and value the special aspects of our past- we won’t have much of a future.

White-Necked Heron – Ardea pacifica

By Marj Webber

W

hite-necked Herons are occasional visitors to Bribie Island and are almost always seen near shallow waters. I have seen them on several occasions at Buckley’s Hole and as recently as just before Christmas 2019 there was one foraging along the margins across from the hide. White-necked Herons are large predatory carnivores 75-106 cm in length and weighing 600-1200g. Herons are much like egrets but are more colourful. They have long white necks with double rows of black spots running the full length when in nonbreeding plumage. Wings are dark with noticeable white markings on the edges of the upper wings. Legs are long and black; eyes are green, and bills are shorter than the bills of other herons. Males and females are similar with females usually a little smaller. When in flight their legs stretch back behind their tails and necks are slightly bent. Wingbeats are slow and deep. They also take advantage of thermals soaring high in the air. Their voice is a harsh single or double croak. They are not as common as Whitefaced Herons but are highly mobile and occur in a much wider area and are found almost anywhere there are suitable freshwaters. Habitats are shallow waterways around 7 cm deep in wetlands, on-farm dams, roadside puddles and shallow lakes but not usually on salty mudflats. They are widespread throughout

Australia with numbers fluctuating according to the availability of suitable feeding grounds. Manmade dams and watercourses have provided many more habitat options and herons have benefited. When waters dry up they move on to other areas where there are water and food. Usually quite a wary bird they tend to stick to open areas where they have a clear view of any impending danger. They have become well adapted to the harsh climatic conditions in Australia and are also found in Indonesia, PNG and New Zealand. Food is mainly made up of fish, crustaceans, insects and any small creatures they find including small nestlings of other birds. They mostly forage singly, in pairs and occasionally in small sieges wading through shallow waters. Sometimes food is stolen from other birds. Breeding can take place at any time of the year in favourable conditions. In our area the most likely breeding time is between August and February

Juveniles landing at Buckley’s Hole.

and in the north, it is more likely to be between January and April after the monsoons arrive. During this time, they develop maroon feathers on their backs and breasts. They are thought to be monogamous and often form colonies with other birds such as egrets, cormorants, Ibises and spoonbills when nesting. Males perform a dance to attract females during the courting season. Nests are built by males and are untidy platforms of sticks about 40-50 cm wide built at 15-30 m in trees usually above water. Clutches of 4-6 bluegreen eggs are laid and incubated by both parents for about 30 days. Food is regurgitated and fed to the downy chicks by both parents. If food is scarce weaker chicks will be tossed from the nest by their stronger siblings. Usually, only 2 babies will remain alive at fledging. When the babies are small both parents take it, in turn, to stand at the nest with wings outstretched to provide shade. Young can fly at 6-7 weeks. Nesting range can be quite flexible with the parents going where conditions are right and if conditions remain stable for several years the nests can be used again and again. White-necked Herons are sometimes called Pacific Herons. A group of herons is called a “siege”. Threats to White-necked Herons are predatory animals such as feral cats, foxes, reptiles and raptors. Droughts can disrupt nesting procedures and thus lessen the number of offspring produced. They are widespread throughout Australia, but little is known about their population status. More study is needed to fill in the gaps for herons and other birds about their biology, movements, habits and population trends. Their conservation status is thought to be secure.

In flight. Note outstretched legs and bent neck.

Why do dogs attack other dogs?

The breed, size, sex and age of the dog have no bearing at all. Dogs communicate with facial expression and body language. Some owners find it hard to understand why their small breed dog acts aggressively to a large breed or a large breed acting submissively to a small breed. One

simple answer to that is they have no self awareness of their size. They all use the same body language except it is difficult when we change their looks through selective breeding. For instance you only have to compare the Pug to the German Shepherd and this could add confusion to the dog. It is very important that owners learn their dog’s body language and it will give them an understanding on how their dog is feeling and trying to say.

lthough there are challenges ahead, February brings a mixture of optimism, creativity, cooperation and adventure. As Jupiter and Neptune align for the first of three meetings that occur throughout the marathon of 2020, they act as the support team; supplying energy and encouragement as we work our way around the course of tests that the year brings our way. As Mars enters the sign of effort and commitment, it adds a welcome injection of vigour, and the willpower to achieve an impressive goal.

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19)

You didn’t come to planet Earth to ‘fit in’. You’re not one of those people who like to conform to everyone else’s expectations. You naturally question convention and seek possible alternatives. Your refusal to accept what’s expected inevitably irritates those who prefer life to be comfortable and predictable. So, in order to achieve success in February, you’ll need to be kind and gentle as you explain yourself. But don’t compromise your integrity by going along with something you need to stand up against. Make your dreams come true this February. Pick up the phone! 1300 017 319.

ARIES (March 21 April 20)

It’s not easy when you feel as if you’re caught between a rock and a hard place. It’s so much easier to push than to shove – especially when you’re unsure about where you want to be. Yet, instead of wondering what you’ve done in order to deserve so many demands on your time, try not to take anything too seriously or personally. Everyone goes through times like these. And, we all come out feeling happier and more positive. This month, you can trust that everything’s working out for the best. Be ready for Valentine’s Day! For advice about love, call 1300 017 319.

the most influential and powerful people find true satisfaction when their domestic life is unhappy. When we feel misunderstood by our nearest and dearest, not even a lottery win will soothe our souls. Yet, it’s easy to overlook the things that really count… we often need to be reminded to sort out our priorities. This month, you can expect to do well at almost every level you focus on. But, if you prioritise the people and situations closest to your heart, the benefits will be long lasting. Love is in the air this month! For valuable insight, call 1300 017 319.

If some things are ‘meant to happen’, what about the other things that come into our lives? When things feel ‘right’ we don’t question them. We don’t waste time wondering whether they were wrong things in disguise. Even when they turn out to bring difficult moments, we tend to take these on board and put it down to the fact that challenges are an inevitable part of the process. This month, which sees the first of three significant meetings between Jupiter and your ruler, Neptune, what feels right, is right. When you picture a world that holds no fear, you imagine either heaven or hell. If we were completely free to do what we want, would anyone ever choose to curb their excesses? A small amount of fear is healthy and necessary. But a big amount, is unhealthy and unnecessary. This month, you can shake off a big worry. Transform your emotional life! reasonable, rational and reliably smooth, you’d be bored senseless! We all need a little bit of chaotic unpredictability in our lives; it brings colour and contrast, danger and depth to our existence. What’s that? You’ve had enough of being pushed to the limit by a series of ridiculous situations? That’s hardly surprising. Fortunately, February brings events that enable you to satisfy your desire for more order and structure. If reassurance is what you’re looking for, that’s what you’ll find. February is going to be a special month. For great news, call 1300 017 319.

planning on telling a lie, it’s best to stick as close to the truth as possible. At least, that’s what the experts tell us. Rather than creating an intricate web of deceit, you only need to modify your story where necessary, to so that you end up with a slightly altered version of events. But what’s wrong with telling the truth? The only reason for not telling things as they are, is that you feel as if you’ll hurt someone’s feelings by being honest. This month, you gain power by being true to yourself and to others. Make your dreams come true this February. Pick up the phone! 1300 017 319.

What signs and signals are you being sent by the cosmos? Do you need to read between the lines, as you keep an eye on the horizon and decipher the smoke signals? Should you be wary of anything obvious, and focus on solving cryptic clues? Not if you want to make the progress you’re being offered this month! You’re naturally blessed with integrity and common sense. Since February offers opportunities to nurture and trust your instincts, you don’t need to overcomplicate anything. Simplicity is key. The world used to be split into restrictive groups and associations. Everyone belonged to a sector of society; and moving from one group to another was challenging if not impossible. These days, in theory at least, we’re able to chop and change more easily. We can switch our political allegiances and climb up and down the social ladder. We’re less easily defined by our sexuality and our ethnicity. This month, as questions arise about what you belong to, take your time over any decisions. Be ready for Valentine’s Day! Skilful marketing teams turn design faults into successes. So, if a toothbrush handle is very short, it will be marketed as a ‘travel toothbrush’. These people are able to make a drawback sound like a bonus feature that makes their product better than the rest. As Jupiter and Neptune align this month, your creative abilities are enhanced. If you needed to sell coals to Newcastle, you could! Even when situations seem to be against you, if you look hard enough, you’ll be able to find hidden advantages. Love is in the air this month! He watched the dam get dry, in the town he would try,

To get work and thus keep all from starving’ He dabbed her eye and then said goodbye, And with no feed the cows kept on calving. He started to pack and he did not look back, He left home with all good intention, But with fortunes turned black and he strayed from the track, The bright lights captured all his attention. The first town was small with not much at all, So further and further he travelled, He lost his sight of the ball and such was his fall, That his appearance became quite dishevelled.

He’s forgotten his mission completely,

These thoughts on his mind he set out to find, The faces he longed to see,

A poor wretched soul, life had taken its toll,

He’d be with his own kind and together they’d bind,

And home beckoned ever so sweetly.

Some reunion it’s going to be.

Tired of living in grime without rhythm or rhyme, A return to the homestead he pondered, He did not have a dime but now was the time, And he thought of the chances he squandered. He’d swallowed his pride, put the past aside, And returned to his broken kin, By their rules he’d abide and with them by his side, There’d be no more loose roving again.

But alas all he found were two holes in the ground, The graves of his parents departed, He was too late they had both met their fate, And he slumped to the earth broken hearted. Such was his sorrow would still be there tomorrow, The loss left him whitened with shock, Beg steal or borrow but his plan did not follow, He’d give it all back to wind back the clock.

COMMUNITY YOUR SAY

Letters Dear Editor,

The tragic bushfires across our country have unfortunately led to a spate of misinformation and myth-making, so a few facts are in order: Firstly, there has been the story that The Greens, or “green activists” are responsible for allowing fuel load build-up by stopping hazard reduction burnoffs. I have been active in several online forums where I have asked the same question many times, namely “Please give some examples of where Greens or “greenies” have stopped burn-offs, especially in areas that were subsequently burned out in the recent fires?” I have never received an answer, the reason being that IT HAS NEVER HAPPENED! - It is part of a campaign of misinformation funded by the fossil-fuel lobby. Some people say that it’s “Greens policies” that have stopped the hazard reduction burns. They are obviously unaware that The Australian Greens have always SUPPORTED burnoffs when it’s safe to do so. Check their website. They also ignore the fact that the Greens are not in power at any level of government, anywhere in the country (apart from some inner-Melbourne 50

councils that obviously were not affected). If they have worked out how to run the government from the cross benches they must be Machiavellian political geniuses! But the truth is that it’s the Federal Government that provides the funds, and the Liberal or Labor governments that decide how to spend them. I bet Annastacia Palaszczuk doesn’t bother to consult with the single Greens MP in parliament. Then there is the story about hundreds of arsonists lighting fires. At one point the figure being quoted was 183. In fact police confirmed only 24 arrests for arson. Simply, the reason these fires have been so destructive is humaninduced climate change. Because of climate change, the opportunities for safe hazard-reduction burns have been drastically reduced (and we saw here on Bribie last year the consequences of burning off in poor conditions). Because of climate change, the drought has been so intense and so prolonged that the “fuel load” in the bush is drier and hugely more flammable than it has ever been. A ton of tree litter on the ground in normal years may feed a moderate fire. That exact same litter, after months of

www.thebribieislander.com.au

drought in the hottest year this country has ever seen, would be explosive. That’s what we’ve witnessed with these fires. I urge your readers not to believe everything they read in the Murdoch press or propaganda in local papers - question what you’re told, do some research and look for alternative viewpoints. Yours, Diana Grey, Bribie Island.

Dear Editor, Noting that some development applications are back for consideration I find it sad that many developers appear to want to push the boundaries relative to the existing zoning. By so doing, it inevitably upsets adjacent occupiers and others that may be affected. I suspect that, often, those ultimately affected may not even realise such relaxations are in the wind. It follows that when one developer gets a relaxation approved, the next will want to go that little bit further. Bribie Island had an attractive environment that drew many to the Island - this has, to a degree,

changed but the Island still retains much to enjoy. I would like to think that developers could respect the current zonings thus avoiding the objections and/or upset that can arise. Whilst we have to accept that population growth will result in more development and that there will be some, probably, unpalatable changes, these, at least, will happen only after Council surveys and after community involvement. Lastly, if this is not already happening, I believe every resident in the surrounding area should be personally advised, by letterbox drop, of any application to exceed a current planning approval. A J Smith

Dear Editor, My apologies to our readers with regard to last issue’s cryptic crossword. I now note that the clue to 14a was not correct - I always have this fear of any mistake despite the checks that are made both by myself and a loyal assistant. So, again, my apologies.

WANTED

The Golden Entertainers, one of Bribie’s oldest and respected choirs is on the lookout for a musical director. Are you, or do you know, that special person to give direction and to lead us in song as we provide regular entertainment to the numerous nursing homes and respite centres on the Island and surrounding district. The pure joy and appreciation we see on the faces of the residents who sing along and even get up and dance is priceless and the reason we continue to do what we do. An ability to read and play music, while being an advantage, is not essential as we have a substantial backing track library, suitable for any occasion or audience, as well as the necessary equipment. If interested further details can be obtained through our Facebook page Bribie Island Golden Entertainers or by phoning 0421 724 222.

SAR FOR LIGHT AIRCRAFT

VOLUNTEER MARINE RESCUE COMMUNITY

Wednesday 22nd January 2020 A search and rescue (SAR) operation was mounted after Brisbane Air Traffic Services received a MAYDAY call from the pilot of a light fixed wing aircraft with 2 people on board and flying from Caloundra to Tangalooma. It is believed the plane has crashed North of Moreton Island. Search conditions in the area were difficult with rough seas and storm activity. Queensland Police (QPS) and Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) were coordinating the rescue effort that included 2 helicopters, the AMSA Challenger jet (from Melbourne) and numerous vessels from Coast Guard Mooloolaba & Redcliffe, VMR Bribie Island, Water Police (controlling and coordinating the search) and various fishing vessels. Bribie 1 left the base pontoon at 1728pm, firstly searching between the base and Woorim, as initial reports were that the plane was on a flight plan from Woorim to the Tangalooma Wrecks, and was last heard passing over Woorim. Further information came to hand that the last radar sighting of the plane was in the vicinity of Flinders Reef, a popular scuba diving area to the North-East of Cape Moreton. Also, that the plane was on a sight-seeing flight from Caloundra to the Tangalooma Wrecks and back to Caloundra. Accordingly, Bribie 1 was tasked to join other vessels in that vicinity and continued searching. Around 2030pm some debris was found in the water SouthEast of Cape Moreton, but authorities couldn’t yet confirm its origin. Bribie 1 continued in the SAR 54

operation until redirected around 2310pm to a medical emergency at the Tangalooma Resort. Bribie 2 was dispatched at 2315pm with 2 VMRBI Crew, 2 QAS officers and our stretcher to rendezvous with Bribie 1 at the Tangalooma Resort. It was certainly a different experience for the 2 young female ambulance officers, in rough wet conditions, but a less memorable one for the injured patient in extreme pain from a fall, no doubt feeling every wave on the journey of just over an hour (normal conditions would be around ½ hour). Arriving at the VMRBI base at 0158am, the patient was finally transferred to the ambulance at 0222am and departed 5 minutes later. The SAR operation was suspended just after midnight due to rough seas and storms, along with vessels requiring both fuel and relief crews, it would recommence at 7am Thursday morning at Cape Morton for tasking by the Water Police. The search continued on Thursday with three police boats, four Volunteer Coast Guard vessels, Volunteer Marine Rescue Bribie Island, two jet skis and several fishing trawlers. Aircraft included the AMSA Challenger jet and six helicopters. Police officers, on foot, were also scouring the coastline of Moreton Island. Thanks to a late night call from the Commodore Liz Radajewski to Spinnaker Sound Marina (midnight) who opened early at 0445am (Thursday morning) so Bribie 1 could refuel and start early, returning to pick up extra

crew at the base then headed for the search area at Cape Moreton at 0525am. Bribie 1 returned to base around 1400, refuelled and with a relief crew headed back out to the search area returning at 2000pm. Police have confirmed plane debris found in waters off Moreton Island came from a light plane that disappeared on Wednesday afternoon following a mayday call. A 70-year-old male pilot and

his 52-year-old wife were on board. They have been identified as a married couple from the Brisbane suburb of Wakerley. The had hired the plane and left from Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast about 3.30pm on Wednesday for a scenic flight over the island and made a mayday call about 4.30pm. The estimated splash point of the plane was ¼ nautical mile West of Smith’s Rock.

member of the public rang and reported to our after-hours number that the “red pirate boat” was adrift of its mooring and beached on the South side of the Bribie Bridge. He had managed to attach a rope to it and tied it to a tree awaiting VMRBI arrival. Photo below shows VMRBI volunteers securing the 10m Tahitian Ketch on the beach about midnight, to return in the morning (and a higher tide) to complete the job of securing it to its mooring.

returned first thing in the morning to check on its condition. The ketch’s owner was contacted but was on his way back from Brisbane and would arrive later in the day. The mooring buoy can be seen alongside the ketch in the above photo indicating the mooring failure. It was decided to put the ketch on the MSQ Mooring (near IGA) until the owner could rectify his mooring or make other arrangements.

VMRBI Skipper Ian Grimes

Rescue 500 helicopter was used in the SAR in the vicinity of Flinders Reef (North-East of Cape Moreton).

The AMSA Bombardier Challenger CL-604 Rescue Jet also used in the search well into the night, had to refuel at Brisbane, to continuing searching before heading back to Melbourne in the early hours Thursday morning. AMSA has 4 of these Challengers, one each based at Perth, Melbourne and Cairns, the other as an operational spare.

different weather patterns affect fishing. This is the same story with weather study’s and climate change studies in Australia. I mean in reality, Australia has only 240 years of history. Probably with only maybe 100 years of credible weather pattern observations and recordings. Mother nature will throw floods, torrential rain, cyclones, tropical lows and Gale force winds to one part of the country, and searing heat, unprecedented devastating fires and strong quick-changing fronts to the other. It’s so devastating to look at the amount of some of Australia’s last remaining pockets of rainforests and bushlands burning on the live Himawari 8 satellite imagery.

The smoke and intensity of these blazes creating their own storm cells and weather systems. The smoke these fires produced was seen from outer space, and also the massive smoke cloud has orbited the earth. The animals that called these last remaining pockets of forests home did not have a chance. It’s an absolute catastrophe.

and white, so how long can the ocean survive this constant attack from numerous sources throughout the world. Well, no human on earth will be able to give you even an approximate time frame, and with too many variables and other factors which will influence the next few decades hopefully, things get better.

Another tragic and unfortunate situation that’s occurring at present is the health of our heart and lungs of our earth, the ocean. The ocean’s health is paramount as more studies have indicated how important it is to ensure that we look after these precious areas. The oceans and bays, seagrass beds and mangrove forests perform an amazing job at absorbing co2 and heat. So, the health of the ocean affects nearly every single organism in life.

Now to the fishing around the area. In the passage, the recent rainfall has pushed some beautiful muddies out of there holes and into the passage. They are always easier to catch after some decent rain as they don’t like freshwater. The fishing in the passage has been

Over the next decade or so if this matter isn’t taken more seriously, then it’s really going to turn bad for The Great Barrier Reef and Moreton Bay and the Fraser coast marine parks. The science is once again in black

awesome with grassies, Moses perch, cod, flatty’s, whiting, mangrove Jack, javelin fish, mackerel and sharks getting taken. The coffee rock ledges, the bridge, 112s, Bongaree jetty are good places to start. The passage has 100s of prime spots to fish and crab. Good sand crabs coming from the passage and bay. The mackerel have been thick in the bay with float lining pilly’s in a burley trail, jigging the beacons, or casting lures to the schools is a good way to catch a few. Offshore the pelagic have been smashing lures and swimbaits. Hutchies, wide Caloundra, tempest and the canyons are all producing quality fish. Expect dolphin fish, tuna, marlin, wahoo and mackerel. On the reefs, the fishing is unbelievable with such a mixed variety of fish getting taken. So, with a couple more months of stormy hot weather on the forecast, keep an eye on weather fronts if heading out offshore and hopefully we will get some great days in between. “Don’t destroy what you come to enjoy” and great fishing, boating and camping for all.

REPORT

By Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours

Welcome to another beach report from Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours. After the good amount of rain we had, the inland track is firm however if everyone drives in the same tracks they get deeper, and the underlying water comes up and the track then turns to mud. The beach traffic will start to drop off now, after the Australia Day long weekend. The track from 8th Avenue car park is still soft in the usual places,

so just be careful as you enter the beach as there is a drop-off. It is important coming off the beach as we often see 4x4’s hit the drop off ridge, pushing sand into the bottom of their radiator which damages it, requiring towing. Remember to check the tides before you leave on your trip up the beach, don’t drive in the soft sand above the high watermark. As you travel the inland track, take some time to stop and take in the beautiful wetlands that are now teaming with wildlife, the water lilies are out in flower and some fantastic photography

Happy Herb Life

Basil

Basil is a leafy and fragrant herb that grows beautifully in full sunlight. Basil loves moist but well-drained soil and requires lots of pruning when it’s in full season. When a branch of your basil has seven or eight leaves, it’s time to give it a prune to allow for new growth. Basil works well in Italian dishes and can be made into pesto pasta sauces or added to salads.

is a pungent herb that complements Indian and Asian dishes.

Rosemary Rosemary is arguably the easiest herb to grow. If you plant it in a good spot, it will provide you with more rosemary than you’ll ever be able to cook with.

Rosemary plants can grow quite tall and wide but can still live happily in large pots and containers. It can survive well in hot and dry climates so be careful not to overwater or over fertilise it. Rosemary is a hearty herb that works well with winter foods like soups, stews and baked potatoes.

Parsley If you want to discover how to grow herbs inside, or more importantly, what herbs are easy to grow inside, then look no further than parsley. Not unlike other herbs, parsley flourishes in sunny areas, but it’s a hardy, versatile herb making it one of the easiest herbs to grow in the kitchen. There are two basic varieties of parsley – flat-leaf and curly. Both are excellent for cooking, particularly in Italian dishes, and both will grow well in most gardens or containers. Parsley likes to be planted in spring and needs a moderate to low amount of water and fertilisation.

OUTDOOR STYLING

A

swimming pool can sparkle like a gem—if it has the right landscaping. Without any trees or flowers around, it’s more like a stone without a setting: still attractive, but not as eye-catching as it could be. Before you look for plants, think about your landscaping goals. Do you want privacy around your pool, or will your blue oasis be the centrepiece of

your backyard? It’s wise to set a budget. If it’s limited, start by working with your existing trees and shrubs. They’re the long-lived backbone of most landscapes. Over time, you can add annuals and other plants as your budget expands. The money you spend will often increase your home’s value. Also consider about the landscaping style you want.

If your home has a coastal vibe, opt for lush plantings of palms, bird of paradise, banana trees, hibiscus, bougainvillea and other tropical plants. Homes with traditional styles can use hanging baskets, planters of colourful annuals and garden beds filled with dwarf shrubs or small trees. Natural stone colours around the pool also work well. Keep your landscaping lowmaintenance by avoiding plants that drop leaves, needles, cones, nuts, fruits and other debris. Make your plantings dramatic, with exciting plants. You don’t want to overpower the pool, but you do want to soften it, “When you’re out there for a long time in the hot sun, you need something pretty

and interesting to look at.” For a tropical look, use plants with big leaves and ferns with fine textures for contrast. You can find ferns that take shade or sun. Incorporate some annuals for colour—not bright red, but pink and other colours. Too much red has a psychological effect. It looks hot and makes you feel hot. If you’re landscaping around a simple pool, soften and wrap the corners with planting beds. You don’t have to do all four. You can do opposite, diagonal corners so the look isn’t too busy. Try to get in some plants with height, but avoid big trees. Their roots and leaves can create problems. Next edition we will talk about décor choices.

Maintain correct tyre pressures, not only does this make the vehicle ride correctly on the road but also improves braking and increases fuel economy. And finally, not only can a pre-trip inspection help reduce chances of costly and possibly dangerous road trouble, it also

provides an opportunity to have needed repairs completed.

1. Know your tyres Every car has a tyre placard in the cabin, usually in the glovebox or passenger door opening, which lists the correct pressures for all driving. Full detail on tyres

is in the owner’s manual. Ensure you know what sort of spare tyre is in the car, or if it has run flats or only a tyre-inflator kit for a puncture.

2. Make regular checks Refuelling time is also the time to check tyre pressures, at least every second visit. While you’re doing it, also check the wear (1.6mm of tread depth is the legal limit) with emphasis on the fronts in a front-drive car and the rears if the car is rearwheel drive.

3. Learn to change a flat Roadside assist programs are common but knowing how to change a tyre (even that you may need to stand on the wheel brace to loosen over-tightened wheel nuts) can make all

COMMUNITY the difference if you’re away from home.

4. Have an emergency plan A flat tyre can be an inconvenience, but far worse things happen on the road. The best idea is to print out essential numbers (emergency services, friends and family, insurance company, local dealership) then laminate it and leave it in your car’s glovebox and hope you never need it.

5. Incorporate an all-round check Checking tyre pressures is an ideal time for a bit of minor maintenance, from checking the lights are all working to dipping the oil and ensuring the coolant (new cars have yellow plastic covers on the under-bonnet essentials) is topped up.

Road Trip Tips

D

o you dream of packing your bags and hitting the open road but are worried you’ll forget something? If you want to make sure your trip becomes a positive story you will tell the grandkids about for years to come, here are some top caravan road-trip tips to remember.

Roadworthy If you are going to be spending a lot of time in

your car or caravan, the most important tip to remember is to ensure it is 100% roadworthy and safe. Check your tyre pressure, pump them up if needed, and keep at least one spare with you. Check your water and oil, and if you are going to be travelling long distances, it is a good idea to have a professional look at your vehicle before setting out.

Asking for directions may become a point of contention when on a road trip, so having navigation software like GPS or Google Maps can help ease tensions. It’s as easy as entering the address of your destination – exact or general – and letting the technology plot your course for you. This doesn’t mean you can’t go wherever the whim takes you, but it is always a handy tool to have. If you are going to locations where there is no phone or internet reception, a physical map works just as well.

Roadside

Assist

The last thing you want is for your car or caravan to break down and find out your coverage has lapsed. Before setting off on your great journey, make sure your roadside assist payments are up to date or arrange to get coverage if you don’t already have it.

Something else you don’t want to be caught without is a toolbox and first aid kit. A good torch can help you navigate in the dark, with spare batteries in case they run out of power. The contents of your first aid kit will generally be the same regardless of where

you go, but for outback destinations, it is also good to include items that can help in case of a snake or spider bite.

Breaks

Stop, revive, and survive. Taking the time for breaks will not only let you stretch your legs and breathe the fresh air but gives you the chance to see more of the country you might miss while driving.

Snacks Depending on how long you will be travelling for, and what restaurants and cafes are along the way, a good tip is to pack plenty of water and snacks. You can gather these from grocery stores, convenience stores, or dedicated camping stores.

Secure Your Possessions The last thing you want is for something to fall and break while you’re on the road. Secure all small objects both inside and outside the car or caravan, including bicycles you may be bringing along. Make a list before you leave and follow Santa’s example by checking it twice. Once you are sure you have packed everything you will need, you will be able to focus on enjoying yourself and creating amazing new memories.
