“W

e had a solar roof fan installed by Bribie Island Solar at the beginning of this summer. It has cooled down our kitchen and house to the extent where we rarely (if ever) need to turn on any ceiling fans. We are very impressed by the difference this roof fan has made in our home.” Alan Train, Sandstone Point.

“T

he 2 fans we bought from Bribie Islander Solar are Working beautifully, well worth the money, we are using less electricity as the air con is not getting used much at all, thoroughly recommend to anyone, well worth it, money well spent and we have bought another 2 fans for the other side of the house.” Arthur & Eileen, Sandstone Point. s I mentioned on the phone yesterday, I am really pleased with the 2 solar roof vents that you supplied and installed for us. “They were fitted this morning and we went out at about 12:10 pm and I didn’t get back until 3:40 pm and I was really surprised at the difference in the house, it wasn’t stuffy at all and for a minute I thought I had left the small back bedroom air conditioner on or the door was open. I didn’t have to charge around opening everything up as usual, I emptied the car first then opened up. I am really pleased with the result”. Cheers, Sandra. Sandstone Point.

Happy Valentine’s day to you all! Today is all about love. Whether it is your significant other, parents, kids or friends, it’s nice to show them that you care. It can be just as simple as a phone call or a card, to let them know you are thinking of them. Today I am going to say thank you and send love and appreciation to all our fantastic businesses on the Island, and especially to our wonderful contributors. I appreciate all the hard work and effort you put into writing and sharing your stories, they are always a great read. I would also like to extend my sincerest apologies to Margaret Guthrie-White, who wrote the fantastic story on the death café. I completely missed her name on the story, and she certainly deserves the credit for it. My apologies again Margaret, I appreciate your understanding and goodwill about it. As I said, today is about love, we have some great cafes and restaurants that are putting on some delicious Valentine’s day meals. So please get in there and try out the menu, not just today, but every day. I would also like to urge you all to shop locally, our businesses put in a lot of hard work and effort to keep their doors open, providing us all with great products, produce and service. TYPE OF

PAIN

By Shannon Taylor

H

i, I’m Shannon and 21 months ago I was 175kg, depressed, lost and in pain! The pain was more mental than physical, my marriage to my best friend of 10 years broke down at the same time I was going under the knife to have weight loss surgery and had to face my addictions head-on and alone! This took me to a point where I saw no value in my life and didn’t want to be here anymore! I had a plan on how I was going to do

it with loved ones and share some secrets about my past that honestly, I had suppressed so deep down that I never planned on sharing in this lifetime, but as I was checking out early why not clear the air... Long story short on the way to my final destination the thought of leaving my Mum and Sister behind, who I had spent my whole life trying to protect was enough to stop me from making a terrible mistake (now that I look back). This put me at a crossroad. I had always said that someone who has hit rock bottom is in a powerful position, as when you have nothing to lose it doesn’t matter

what your next move is... Yes, my past hasn’t been the best, but I also see the value in time enough now to make sure I

don’t waste it stressing over things that I can’t change and I would much rather spend it chasing happiness! I now push my body and Aged Care Disability Leisure and Health Mental Health

mind, mainly because I enjoy the pain and accomplishment, but also because I want to prove that anything truly is possible and hopefully help that one person out of the dark days and back into the light! I started my weight

loss journey with the assistance of weight loss surgery (gastric sleeve)! Fast forward to today and I am 95kgs down and living a much better quality of life! Not only that, but on February the 15th and 16th I will be doing my first solo

tri at Bribie Island in the long-distance event! I’ve trained hard and have high hopes for how I will go. The reason I am doing this article is that there is a stigma behind the surgery, and some people consider it extreme. Because of this, a lot of people never take

the steps to pursue it and regain control of their life and break that addiction to food! Keep an eye out on in the next edition for more of Shannon’s Story. Also you can view more of my story on instagram @Shannons_story

The Bribie Island group was formed by Trevor Shields and Gil Leach back in 2000. They realised that travelling long distances on fast, modern and unfriendly highways to club meets and getting together with fellow members of the Sunshine Coast Antique Car Club (SCACC) in Brisbane

or the Sunshine Coast was neither a pleasant experience nor safe for themselves or their fragile and valuable old motor cars. As a local branch of the SCACC (based at the showgrounds at Nambour), the Bribie Island group caters for locals (and not only locals) who enjoy sharing each other’s company, talking old cars and participating in less strenuous outings together, with or without their vehicles, on Bribie and the surrounding areas. Members are also involved in assisting at the famous Nambour Swap Meet held

ell here we are into a new year and what a depressing start it has been with bush fires capturing the world’s attention whilst here at home businesses left right and centre seem to be closing the doors. Old staples such as David Jones, Just Jeans, Bardot, and Big W are finding the going tough but added to the mix one of Australia’s largest and oldest family winemakers McWilliams Wines went into administration which shocked the whole industry. The McWilliams story began with Samuel McWilliam who was born in Northern Ireland in 1830 and then immigrated to Australia to Melbourne in 1857 seeking his fortune during the Victorian Gold Rush. After marrying Martha Steele in 1863 they moved to The Gippsland area where he set up a pastoral venture.

By Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au 14 www.thebribieislander.com.au

In 1877 he purchased land at the northern edge of Corowa and planted his first vines on the property. By the time he retired in 1891, he had built the foundation of a winery that would span over 139 years passing through six generations of his family. When his wife passed away he left the ‘Sunnyside Vineyard’ in the hands of his two sons Jon James (J.J.) and Thomas as well as his eldest daughter Eliza Jane.

The Bribie Islander

the year 1895 J.J. moved to Junee and took up a colonial Wine Licence establishing the “Mark View” Vineyard. In 1913 J.J. and his eldest son Jack arrived in The Griffiths district carrying 50,000 vine cuttings which were kept in a nursery where water had to be carted to the area until irrigation arrived a few months later. The first grapes were picked in 1916 and sent to Junee by rail for processing at the Mark View winery. The McWilliam’s Hanwood Estate Winery was commissioned in February 1947 and processed 170 tonnes in their first vintage, by the time of his death in 1951 J.J. McWilliam had pioneered the Griffith region as a premium winemaking region and set the foundation of the winery. Today the company is headed by Jeff McWilliam who is a member of the fifth generation and sixthgeneration winemaker and family ambassador Scott McWilliam. McWilliam Wines are also members of Australia’s First Family of Wine which also includes Brown Bros, Campbell’s of Rutherglen, d’Arenberg, DeBortoli, Jim Barry, Howard Park, Tahbilk, Taylor’s, Henschke, Tyrell’s and Yalumba. Today McWilliams’ have vineyards in several States and produce many outstanding wines that cover very good quality affordable wines under The Hanwood Estate Label. The McWilliams Mc W Range which promotes alternative varieties plus regional styles, The Hilltops Single Vineyard range, the outstanding Tumbarumba

FOOD, WINE & Chardonnay and 1877 Shiraz, the quirky On The Grapevine range and Off The Press range plus some of Australia’s finest fortified wines. The Hanwood range frequently sells for under $10 and they regularly win medals at the Nations wine shows, next time you are looking for a very good wine at a good price try a Hanwood estate wine. Until just recently McWilliams also owned Evan’s and Tate wines from Western Australia but a couple of years ago sold the brand to The Foggerty Wine Group, perhaps even then there was pressure on the company’s cash flow anyway whatever the situation let’s hope McWilliam Wines sort their problems out and continue for many years to come under the families ownership. One of my favourite McWilliam’s brands is Mount Pleasant Wines which like McWilliams began life when English immigrant Charles King planted the Old Hill Vineyard on rich, volcanic soil in the Parish of Pokolbin at the southern end of the Hunter Valley. In 1921 legendary winemaker Maurice O’Shea aged 24 persuades his widowed mother Leontine to purchase the King family’s 16.3ha Hunter Valley property which O’Shea renamed Mount Pleasant. In 1932 The McWilliam family purchased a half share of Mount Pleasant Estate and encouraged O’Shea to continue as a winemaker, in 1941 McWilliams acquired the remaining share

ISLAND TIMES of Mount Pleasant and retained O’Shea as chief winemaker and manager who then went on to make some of Australia’s greatest wines. In 1967 the first of the Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon is made and still, today remains one of the great wines made in Australia and in 2005 edition of James Halliday’s edition of the Australian Wine Companion the 2000 vintage of The Mount Pleasant Maurice O’Shea Shiraz made by winemaker Phil Ryan outscored Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace. In 2017 Mount Pleasant was named winery of the year in Halliday’s Wine Companion and in the same year, Halliday scored 2014, Maurice O’Shea, Shiraz 99 points. Although many of the Mount Pleasant wines retail at $50 or more, for example, the 2017 1.5ltr Old Paddock and Old Hill Shiraz which has 5 trophies to its name retails at around $125 it is still possible to buy the outstanding Mount Pleasant Philip Shiraz at around $25 and The Elizabeth Semillon less than $20 when on special. Mount Pleasant is also involved with alternative grape styles and has released The Mount Pleasant B-Side 2017 CF-17 Shiraz Montils and B-Side 2017 TT-17 Tempranillo Touriga both of which sell for around $35.

Wine has been praised since time began. In his comedy “The Knights” written in 424BC Aristophanes states: Than wine, what could be more wonderworking? Why look you now: ‘tis when men drink they thrive, grow wealthy, win success, are happy, help their friends…

I’ll drink to that!

It was a terrific day with such a good atmosphere, the food was absolutely brilliant, members from the club making salads and sweets for everyone to enjoy. ARRIVAL Scaling & Filleting By Elaine Lutton

My husband and I were both what was termed “frying pan fishermen”,

meaning if you can’t eat it; don’t bother trying to catch it.

The Green Clean Up 22 www.thebribieislander.com.au

The Bribie Islander

Not for us big game fish, but small sweet winter Whiting, Bream, Flathead, and Moses Perch. The occasional Flatfish we caught, such as Sole or Flounder, generally went to my mother-in-law as a form of rent. I loved the little chopper Tailor which Don and I caught off the beach with a rod. They needed bleeding, but that was no hassle. When they were in the bucket, one had to keep an eye open for greedy Pelicans who would attempt to steal them whilst we had our back to them and were making the next cast. The leaky boat with heavy oars that I had to bail while Don fished was replaced by an aluminium boat known as a “tinny”, complete with a motor. This meant that we could both fish, and when the children reached the advanced age of three and four years, fishing became a family affair.

Don would use a light rod, while the children and I would use hand lines. They soon learnt to feel when a fish was biting at the end of their line, and even to recognise what kind of fish it might be. Soon they could manage their hand lines without getting them into incredible tangles, and to both bait their hooks and remove the fish and place it in the bucket in the boat where our catch was kept. Even while young, they would help us to collect bait. We discovered the best spots to pump for yabbies (Ghost Shrimps). Don and I would pump vigorously with our yabby pumps until we had four or five yabbies out of their hole and on the surface, and the children would follow us, picking them up and never complaining about the occasional nip. When older, they learnt how to use a rod and line, the art of rod binding, the

safe use of a knife, and how to rig up their lines. My daughter was just as an enthusiastic student as any of the boys who joined Don’s tutorials. When our children had grown up and gone to the big smoke in search of fame and fortune, it was Don and I alone that went fishing. There was nothing more wonderful than to be out

in the early morning on a mirror-like sea heading for “our spot”. On the way, we would keep an eye open for the Dolphins, Turtles, and Dugongs that were common in those days. When we were in the “right place” we began our drift, baiting our hooks with squid, worm, prawn, yabbies or whatever the fish seemed to be biting on. Generally, it was Winter or Diver Whiting that we

were after; not big fish, but delicious. As I told my brother-in-law who came from the Northern Territory and would boast of the Barramundi he had caught up there, “Any fool can catch a big fish, but it takes skill to catch the little ones”. On a good morning, we could catch a hundred or so of those delicious little fish within a couple of hours, and then it was time to head for home where the real work would begin. First the scaling, then the filleting, then the belly boning so that each fillet would be guaranteed to be bone free. When completed, I would begin to pack for the freezer, leaving some fish fresh for the evening meal. Last of all, I took the skeletons to the beach and threw one or two into the sea. The Seagulls were the first on the scene. Their

cries attracted the notice of other birds, and it was not long before we had Terns and Pelicans joining the “green” clean up. On one occasion when my husband was feeding the Pelicans in this manner, one crafty Pelican crept up behind him, and on a backward swing took a bite out of his hand, gaining both fish and flesh. We got to enjoy the fruits of our labour later when the fish hit the fry-pan and were then served on our plates, along with lemon juice from our own lemon tree. Surely this was the food of the gods!

Dear Island-friends,

R

ecent wet-weather events have been, in-part, inspiring to the personal development of interesting new thoughts and habits. Oh, and everything is looking so lush, green and healthy! Are we not blessed with the belongings of subtropical climate? As well, recent endeavours along Welsby Parade have caught me up in visions of whitecapped passage and white, rocking sail-ships (and the odd ‘Marooned’ one too) upon the rough greywaters. Sometimes the little scenes I pass by make me feel rather surreal. How delightful it is to live on our sandy shores.

Anyway, back to the development of interesting new thoughts and habits. So, one day a few weeks back I noticed our little Wi-Fi modem had, well, blown up. Upon ringing our provider, I found that the only thing we could do was purchase a new one and upon ringing JB HIFI I found it had been a common thing of late, what with all the storms, that modems have been blowing up. Very long story short, I’m in the process of waiting for a completely new set up, which means no phone nor internet for a while. Besides that, I have also chosen to put away my mobile for a time so all in all I’ve entered into a sort of unplanned tech-detox.

Actually, the progression is much more precious, detailed and longer than that and it’s more of a cycle than anything, but you get the gist. When you detoxify from any habit that has been accumulating sludge inside your body, mind, soul and spirit, something amazing begins to happen to your being. It’s like you are renewed in childhood; like you are taken back to a simple time where you

didn’t need much but the fundamental needs in life. And, instead of indulging in the lap of luxury, you were sitting beside it. Being restricted in one area of my life, heightened my appreciation in other areas. Because I not only found productivity out of the restriction but also enjoyment, I realised something. Just because we have access to luxury (as I feel a lot of what we take for granted in the West, a lot that we just expect as part of normal daily lives, would seem so luxurious in poorer countries) doesn’t mean we have to or should partake in them. At least, partake so often as we do. I feel that a lot of social stress comes from keeping up a lifestyle that demands luxury. Luxury meaning: being in a state of great comfort, gratification and excess.

BRIBIE SPELLHEALTH and HAPPINESS

The Brisbane Courier -23 November 1926

For generations, Bribie has fascinated Queenslanders, just as for centuries it threw a spell over the aborigines, who believed that the island was the haunt of good spirits, who used their magic to aid their sick or ailing descendants. The pretty settlement, which has grown up near the wharf where the steamers from Brisbane berth, is generally called Bribie, but

There are now 170 houses on Bribie, and the community feels that the time has arrived for it to direct its own affairs. There is dissatisfaction that it has not even a representative in the Caboolture Council and that it has no knowledge how its civic affairs stand. The residents believe that the money raised in rates on a property on the island should be spent on improvements there.

Facing the beach stood the 12 huts built by the Tug Company for letting purposes. On the right were two splendid new tennis courts and an inviting bowling green. Beyond the Bowling Green was the pavilion erected for the use of visitors as a dance hall and general place of amusement. Retracing my steps across the Tug Company’s Reserve we passed Arthur Bestmann’s general store where necessities for campers, visitors, and residents could be obtained. A fine building also had been erected for Church of England services at a cost I was informed, of more than 1000 Pounds.

On the day of the visit to Woorim township, as the outer beach is officially named, a strong northwesterly wind was blowing straight from the open ocean at the north end of Moreton Island, causing heavy rollers to break upon the beautiful white beach which extends northwards for some miles. Surf bathers here enjoy themselves to the full, and at holiday times, members of lifesaving clubs were always on the lookout.

Bribie Island, apart from being a popular seaside resort, has agricultural possibilities, especially regarding the propagation of cypress pine trees, which thrive well all over the island. The first settlement of Bribie Island may be traced to the earliest days of Brisbane, when Bribie Passage, the deep and narrow stretch of water between the island and the mainland, had become notable as one of the best fishing grounds of Moreton Bay. Eventually, several fishermen took up their residence on the island and forwarded supplies of fish to the Brisbane markets. To some extent, this fishing is still important, large quantities of fish being sent to Brisbane every week. For many years Bribie has been popular with campers, and particularly with amateur fishermen. Visitors to Bribie know that it is one of the few seaside resorts where fish can be purchased in all seasons, fresh and cheap.

My Bribie

By Sue Wighton

Sue Wighton is a Brisbane writer and frequent Bribie visitor, who wrote weekly opinion pieces for the Courier-Mail from 2011 to 2014. Sue is keen to contribute regularly to the Bribie Islander, sharing her observations both serious and amusing. She has been known to bake.

An old mate (let’s call her ‘J’) has a house on Bribie. This place has been in her family for a couple of generations. It’s not flash but it’s comfortable. In fact it’s where her grandparents lived for many years. Her grandma had a gift cum haberdashery shop. Haberdashery – now there’s a word you don’t hear much these days!

I’ve been visiting Bribie for about 25 years. This daggy, lovely little island and I have become great friends. How did this friendship begin?

a welcome antidote to the grind of single parenting. And I wasn’t the only one. My memories of those days are of lots of women, some single, some partnered, but many of us failed wives with children in tow – converging on this island sanctuary, thanks to J’s unfailing generosity. My

Like most friendships, there was a chance meeting and a sense that we have much in common.

The house is well stocked with crockery and linen from Grandma’s shop. In fact, it looks like Grannie just popped next door for a cuppa and never came back. When my marriage went south, I headed north. Here was the chance meeting with Bribie that would blossom into a lifelong love affair. Visiting the island became

dear dad dubbed us Bribie girls the Failed Wives Club. We swam in the benevolent waters of Bribie Island, chronically ignored our own kids, cogitated over cryptic crosswords, gossiped about absent failed wives and disappointing men, drank wine, rode bikes along the dappled Bribie bike path, cooked, drank more wine, ate ice-creams and generally had a lovely time. There’s something reassuring and heavenly about the downright dagginess of Bribie that I love. Who wants a world where everything is designer slick? Daggy is being natural and enjoying some of life’s simpler pleasures. Sitting under the back verandah of my friend’s house at Bribie eating ice blocks with the sprinkler cooling our toes. Now that’s my idea of Heaven. Over the years, these Failed Wives Club visits became

a tradition, with major holidays seeing a bunch of women and kids descend on J’s place – trailing eskies, beach towels, boogie boards, soft toys and books. Such wonderful times. As the years passed, some failed wives acquired partners – a motley crew

of Failed Wives Club associate members. So baritone voices augmented the female chorus as we idled away the hours on beds and lounges strewn about the place. Nowadays the children have grown and moved away – all the better for the indolent ignoring by their single parents and the undivided attention of a bevy of kindly ‘aunties’ on these languid Bribie weekends. The friendships forged in those regular visits remain strong. We all still visit on high holidays, sharing stories, old and new, our sorrows, our joys and of course delicious food. At Easter, it’s Di’s fish pie. Lamb roast lovingly prepared by one of our associate members is always a weekend crowd pleaser. Rumbledy-thumps for breakfast. (Don’t ask.) And the Australia Day weekend wouldn’t be the

same without Henk’s pies and mushy peas. The writer, PD James reckoned that ‘every island, to a child, is a treasure island’. She was absolutely right.

I hope I never grow up.

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED

By Anne Matthews

Fire is not a gentle master! It is 17 years since my husband, son, golden retriever, Charlie, and I survived the Firestorm that hit Canberra on Saturday 18 January 2003. This was the worst natural disaster to ever strike the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). As I write this, a state of emergency has been declared in the ACT due to the threat of fires surrounding Canberra. This declaration has bought back memories of that very hot January day in 2003. The 2003 Canberra bushfires caused severe damage to the suburbs and surrounding land of the ACT during 18–22 January 2003. Almost 70% of the ACT’s nature reserves, pastures and pine plantations were badly damaged and most of the Mount Stromlo Observatory was destroyed. After burning for a week around

the edges of the ACT, the fires entered the suburbs of Canberra on 18 January 2003. Over the next ten hours, four people died, more than 490 people were injured, and 470 homes were destroyed or severely damaged. At that time we were living in Chapman, one of the eight residential suburbs of Weston Creek. The District of Weston Creek is situated about 13 kilometres southwest of the Canberra City Centre. Chapman, Rivett, Duffy and Holder, the worst-affected suburbs of the 2003 fires, are situated adjacent to the large Stromlo Pine Plantation which was completely destroyed in the fires. The sound of exploding pine trees, the complete darkness at 4 pm on a hot dry summer’s afternoon, the smoke, floating embers and the height of the approaching firewall are still very vivid in my mind. Michael and I were at home when a friend rang just after 2.00 pm to see if we were alright. Ron had heard an emergency radio broadcast listing Chapman, Duffy, Holder and Rivett as

32 www.thebribieislander.com.au

The Bribie Islander

at risk in the approaching fire. It was a 40-degree dry hot day and we were inside in air-conditioned comfort, sitting in an east-facing room. When we went outside and looked to the west we couldn’t believe the scene – fire, smoke and embers, plus the sound of exploding pines and gums. Then we heard “Elvis” the helicopter, flying over and dropping water on the fires. We turned on ABC 666 radio and listened to the emergency instructions. The station closed down normal programs and just gave a continual update. On that Saturday afternoon, the radio announcer was a calming influence and provided a lifeline. She kept repeating important information about the location of Evacuation Centres, how to prepare your home and when to leave. I will always be grateful to ABC 666, especially since January is usually a quiet time in Canberra. Parliament is not sitting and many public servants take holidays as it is also the long school holiday break. Many Canberra businesses, including Radio Stations,

work with a skeleton staff. Those announcers who were on duty had to work long hours to provide emergency coverage. Our son Tim was playing cricket for his Weston Creek team in Woden and I rang him to tell him to come home. He said he had just called an end to the game because it was so dark where he was you couldn’t see the ball! He was a bit annoyed because he was 40 not out and on a roll! Michael and our next-door neighbour started hosing down our houses and putting embers out on houses across the road. When Tim arrived home he got up on the roof and watered everything down. I started packing the two cars. Between 3.00 and 3.30 pm the first houses were lost in Eucumbene Drive Duffy, which had pine forests across the road. We lost power around this time. Around 4.00 pm Police and Emergency Services came down our street with a loud hailer calling out ‘Evacuate Now.’ It was quite surreal and eerie – like a scene from an apocalyptic movie. Looking back up to the

west of our street we could see the fire raging. Embers and small sparks seemed to be coming at us in the strong wind like we see tracer bullets in a movie. Gas bottles were exploding and the local Rivett petrol station had already caught fire. This was all accentuated as it was very dark and all you could hear was the police loudspeakers and “Elvis” flying over. Tim and Charlie left in his car and Michael and I in ours. We joined the long queue of cars driving through the reddish tinged darkness to the Evacuation Centre in Woden. We picked up a man walking out with all his possessions in one suitcase. The Evacuation Centre was crowded and wouldn’t take animals, so we drove into the underground carpark of my Office and parked our cars, and Charlie, there until we could sort out emergency accommodation. We survived and I am proud of how calm the three of us were, unlike many around us. Our house survived with only minor damage (ash and embers had seeped in through bathroom and toilet vents and we had to throw out a freezer full of frozen food that had perished without electricity) but we couldn’t move back in for five days. I remember walking around my devastated neighbourhood and calculating that the last house to burn in our Street was less than 500 metres from our home. If it had not been for a change in wind direction which turned the fire up the hill our home would have been lost. Funny thoughts do go through your mind – one concerned having a cup of tea. The fact the electricity

REGULAR FEATURES was “out” didn’t register until you thought about it. But, being there in total darkness, due to the smoke, at 3 pm, made you lose your sense of reality. Subsequent inquiries into the 2003 bushfires, including the Roche report, the McLeod inquiry, and the Coroner’s Report, identified poor management of the initial response to the four fires that started as a result of lightning strikes in New South Wales on 8 January as a key contributor to the disaster that occurred on 18 January 2003. Also, Researchers have confirmed that the first fire tornado was observed during these 2003 fires.

Mt Stromolo Observatory which was completely destroyed Photo courtesy of ABC Canberra

Perhaps the saddest aspect of it all – notwithstanding the fires and loss – was after we returned, having people cruising the area – either sightseeing or offering to buy burnt out blocks from those coming to terms with their losses. You truly see the very best and the very worst of human nature in these times. Thankfully the worst was confined to a very, very small minority. The funniest aspect? Well, we’d always had a disaster emergency plan for such things. It contained a list of “must take with us” items. Passports, Birth Certificates, important documents, photos, jewellery, mementos etc. As we drove away I remembered that I had left the plan with the Passports and Documents. However, we had taken the things that really mattered – ourselves, our dog, precious photos and mementos. Today we still laugh about how we thought we were so prepared and forgot all our important documents. On Friday 31 January 2020 ACT Chief Minister, Andrew Barr, declared a state of emergency in the ACT. A

Clark Donovan’s Photo of his flight over Canberra on 31 January 2020

state of emergency is the strongest possible signal the ACT government can send to the community to prepare for the worst. It gives the ACT Emergency Services Agency Commissioner, Georgeina Whelan, the authority to coordinate resources across the ACT government to respond to the developing threat of fire to Canberra properties. This time the authorities appear to be better prepared. In 2003, instead of urging residents to leave the area, they asked us to return to our homes and prepare for the coming fire front. And, at first, a senior emergency services official resisted

police efforts to declare a state of emergency, which would allow police to forcibly evacuate residents. Fires can happen in any community. I must admit feeling uneasy last year when the fires broke out along Sunderland Drive. And I did go and check that our Disaster Plan was with our important documents! So from personal experience, the best advice I can give is to prepare your home, by hosing down, put water in your roof gutters if you can, make water available for the firefighters and leave early. Material goods are replaceable – even your documents – lives are not.

LOCALS ONLY

By Alby Lincoln

Well folks, another year come and gone and the beginning of our 13th year. The show was a cracker and featured a couple of first-timers,as well as a stellar lineup. First the good news...a lot of our regular performers didn’t make it to the show. Why?? Because they all had paid gigs, which is very good news for the organisers as it’s what we set out to do when we first started, amongst other aims which we’ve demonstrated in nearly every show since the project began. It couldn’t have been achieved without the fabulous support we’ve received over the time, by the audiences and the Business community.

The last show featured the annual Locals Only Show awards. The winner of the big one, The Voice of Locals Only, was won by the everpopular Mark Edwards. The winner of the Best New Talent was won by 13yr old rising star, Kiani Jazz. Best Band... Gonzo Zonk and very well deserved. The Winner of the Blueys Best Friday Night Artist was won by Ricky Taite... The best Friday Night Artist at the Beach Bar and Cafe was won by Mick Early and Puffing Billy. A host of other awards were presented on the day. For full details, check out the Blueys website. The next day, Blueys hosted popular rock band, Cool Coda who presented a perfect performance of classic Australian Rock Music. They also celebrated their 100th gig as well, which is a great

Movie Review

Harvard educated lawyer, also an African American, who commits himself to right the wrongs of that conviction. The film, however, is about so much more. It confronts its audience not only with the pervasive impact that bias and bigotry create but also the permeating culture of fear, prejudice and hatred they foster. When the film opens, we meet its two main characters: Walter McMillan, played by Jamie Foxx, and Bryan Stevenson, played by Michael B. Jordan. McMillan is a logging businessman in Monroeville, Alabama who is accused, convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of an eighteen-year-old local girl.

Based on a true story, “Just Mercy” centres on the wrongful conviction of

to the prison inmates he meets. This experience inspires him to open his own legal practice, the Equal Justice Initiative, offering free legal representation to the inmates on Death Row in Alabama’s Holman State Prison. Although the back-stories of these main characters remain untold, the film’s director, Destin Daniel Cretton, creates palpable tension as Stevenson is faced with one obstacle after another trying to pursue justice for McMillan. Be inspired by the portrayal of Stevenson’s untiring efforts to convince the judiciary of his client’s innocence. Be moved by the impact he has on those who placed their trust in him. See the film to learn what happens to McMillan and meet the real characters as the film closes. Chris Connolly

And then when it seems As though it is never-ending A sudden and unexpected calm With the ocean smooth and tranquil Reflecting sand dunes, seagulls and soft billowy white clouds. Whistling Kite Halaistur sphenurus

By Marj Webber

Whistling Kites are

are swooped upon from the air, crustaceans, small animals, insects and carrion. Like Black Kites they often feed at rubbish tips and on roadkill. Also, in the company of Black Kites they are often present

medium-sized raptors commonly seen and heard while soaring above all areas of Bribie Island. Their whistling calls while in flight or perched are an indication that they are present. Much of their time is spent gliding up and down the Pumicestone Passage in the quest for food.

Breeding takes place usually from March to November with the predominant breeding months in our area being August and September. They may breed 2 or 3 times a year. Nests are large and cumbersome with lined basin-shaped inners, mostly built in tall trees and near water. These are often used year after year and added to each season, growing larger each year and sometimes reaching 1.5 m across and 1 m deep. Both parents build the nests. Clutches of 2-3 blue-white motley eggs are laid which are incubated mostly by the females for about 40 days. When hatched the chicks are covered with white down and fledge at 7-8 weeks. Adult plumage appears at about 12 months.

They are easily identified when in flight by large, white M shaped patches under their wings. At the tip of each wing are six long, feathered fingers which are spread out in flight. They are a sandybrownish colour with rather an untidy appearance and a long pale tail extending well past the wingtips when perched. Males and females are similar in appearance with the female being a little larger at 60cm, with a wingspan of 120-145 cm and weighing up to 1 kg. They are sometimes mistaken for Little Eagles when in flight as the underwing markings are similar. They have been named for their whistling calls. Habitat is diverse, with Whistling Kites found over most of Australia. Generally, they like to be near water where much of their food is found. They are more common in the northern areas of Australia and are also found in PNG, the Solomon Islands and New Caledonia. During drought seasons they become nomadic in search of food. Food is obtained by flying and pouncing on prey and is also found on the ground in the form of carrion. They

escape the flames. I was once surprised to see a Whistling Kite eating a large cormorant at the side of a lagoon. The cormorant looked like a fresh kill. As well as catching their own prey they will sometimes pirate from other birds and scavenge from fishermen. When swooping and snatching up fish, birds or small mammals they must be careful not to choose something that is too heavy. It is difficult for them to let go once the talons are fixed. If the prey is too large they could be pulled into the water and drown.

Along with Black Kites and Brown Falcons, they are sometimes known as “Firebirds because of the belief that they pick up burning sticks to drop and start new fires to flush out fresh prey.

Safety Dave says In light of recent fires on board boats in South East Queensland, now would be a good time to check your fire extinguisher if you have one on your boat.

MSQ Advises:

All Queensland regulated ships and boats over 5m in length MUST carry firefighting equipment that can extinguish a fire quickly and effectively. You should buy all firefighting equipment, like fire blankets and extinguishers, from an authorised dealer who can work out the best type for your needs. Fire extinguishers

must be serviced by the manufacturer or an authorised agent before the expiry dates. If any firefighting equipment is unusable, you must replace it. A portable fire extinguisher (PFE) which has a manufacture stamp of more than 5 years prior, under Australian Standards must be hydrostatic pressure tested by an approved tester. Due to the cost and time associated with this process most commonly the PFE would be simply replaced. https://www.msq.qld.gov. au/Safety/Firefightingequipment

Fishing REPORT By Cheryl Williams

Welcome to another fishing report from Gateway Bribie Adventures and Nev our Master Baiter. It is nice to have the rain about but

TIDE TIMES & M OON P H ASES BR I B I E I SL A ND & M O R ETON BAY

unfortunately, it does not help the fish with the freshwater washing downstream.

W

e have still had a few out fishing over the past few weeks. We have been seeing a lot of mud crabs being washed out of the creeks. Ningi creek is proving to be a great place to get some good size crabs. We were getting a lot of Sand crabs along the passage and at Lime Pocket, but have not heard too much over the last week. I think the wet weather is keeping them

away. With the kids back at school, hopefully, the weather will pick up and we will see some more fishing happening. The surfside is seeing lots of Mackerel being caught at 2nd lagoon, 4th lagoon, campsites, and the gun emplacements. We are also getting reports of some good size dart at 1st lagoon, 8th avenue carpark, and the campsites. If you head over to Red Beach, they are catching Bream and Whiting as well at Bongaree, Banksia Beach, Poverty Creek, Ningi Creek, and Toorbul. Don’t forget to grab some prawns and squid to get a feed. One of our anglers caught a lobster just near the Bribie Bridge that would have to be a first! He was very excited. We have seen a few Dew caught at night off the bridge but remember

anglers clean up after yourselves and don’t leave your rubbish and dead fish for others to pick up. We have seen a big cod caught in Ningi Creek on mullet fillets, which is the 2nd one in 4 weeks. If you would like to catch a few flatheads try Bellara boat ramp, Turners Camp and Banksia Canals. The Snapper is biting well at The Ripples and Sandstone point.

Beach

REPORT

By Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours

Welcome to another beach report from Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours

REGULAR FEATURE just be careful as there is a beehive in the outlet of the rainwater tank. They won’t harm you, just stay clear. The track from 8th Avenue car park is still chopped up, as usual. Remember we are still in summer, so we still have to watch out for the unexpected like snakes. We came across this little carpet snake at the edge of the water out on the beach, it was alive and well.

We have had a lot of rain over the last week or so, this will firm up the inland track, it needed it badly. Be mindful of the ruts as this rain could make some bog holes very quickly and with the downpour and rising water table, we could have mud. The rain has bought the wildlife out there, has been a few kangaroos along the edge of the track, so keep an eye out for them. if you stop at lighthouse reach for lunch or a fish

The sand is smooth drive at low tide but is very soft going into the lagoons with this rain. It should hopefully fill our wetlands and our lagoons, bringing back the wonderful wildlife, we’ve been missing it. We have very high tides currently so don’t get caught out.

Proposed Seaweed Farm to be located Southern end of Pumicestone Passage BIEPA In Moreton Bay Marine Park

The Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association (BIEPA) has been actively caring for our special habitat and its residents for 41 years. BIEPA supports, in principle, as does Healthy Land and Water, the establishment of commercial seaweed farm industries in Australia. A seaweed farm in Moreton Bay Marine Park could compliment the Pumicestone Shellfish Reef Restoration Project in helping to improve the declining health of the Pumicestone Passage and Moreton Bay Marine Park. These projects will help to return healthy ecosystem services – a healthy economy depends

on a healthy environment, especially a sustainable tourism industry in the Moreton Bay region. Seaweed Farms appear to tick all three boxes of the Triple Bottom Line test for long term business viability - economically, socially and environmentally. The Australian Seaweed Institute first brought their proposal to the local community’s attention over a year ago in August 2018. A documentary film about the Australian Seaweed Institute and seaweed farming titled, “2040 - Join the REGENERATION”, was to be shown at the Bribie Island Cinema at 6:00 pm Wednesday 28th August 2018. The screening was cancelled due to lack of bookings. At that time the proponents also shared a comprehensive information package about the proposed seaweed farm and its business model: to build “a new seaweed industry for Queensland that would create jobs in coastal areas while protecting and enhancing our bays and oceans”. Information can be found on their web site: https://static1.squarespace.

approvals (such as an Environmental Impact Assessment) and their plans for funding sources.

Scientists from the University of the Sunshine Coast have been researching the viability of seaweed farms in Moreton Bay for some time at the Woorim Aquaculture Research Centre. Professor Tim Flannery authored, “Sunlight and Seaweed – An Argument for How to Feed, Power and Clean up the World”.

Regarding funding sources: Again, this is an example of how the new generation of entrepreneurs operates. Ms Kelly explained that once the necessary Governmental requirements had been met and approved, they would continue to seek funding from “Impact Investors”. These are investors who expect their investments to make a positive impact, socially and environmentally. The Bank Australia is one such bank whose mandate is to “put people before profit”.

The proponents of the seaweed farm venture in Moreton Bay Marine Park are part of a new generation of entrepreneurs whose mandate is to make a positive impact, socially (jobs), environmentally and economically (region) in areas where they do business. At the Sandstone Point Community Association Information Evening (held 16th October 2019), Jo Kelly, one of the proponents, presented and explained in depth their business model and plans, the processes which the project needed to complete for government

There were many valid enquiries raised by the local community about the impacts of this concept of seaweed farms In Australia. The audience learned that presently eight Asian nations produce 99% of farmed seaweed; and most importantly, seaweed farms do not need arable land; do not need fresh water for irrigation and do not need fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides. Seaweed is

one of the very few foods produced commercially that can have a positive impact on the environment. Some people were concerned about undesirable sea views that could affect real estate values; some asked where the seaweed would be dried; what would happen if the project failed; would there be excess noise from the boats attending the farm. As was explained, the lowest astronomical tide (LOT) mark is at least 800 metres across the mudflats from real estate and the seaweed farm will be located at least 50 metres beyond the LOT. Markers will be colours that blend with the ocean colours. And the boats will be moving slowly when on site. Essentially, the seaweed farm would be a kilometre from real estate views across the mangroves and mudflats. The audience heard that plastic was not the only option for the lines holding the seaweed baskets and the farm will cultivate only local native species of seaweed. As the migratory shorebirds feed primarily in mudflats, intertidal zones, mangroves, beaches and coastal wetlands, it is unlikely they would become entangled in the seaweed farm lines that will be situated in the ocean beyond the mudflats. As studies have demonstrated the positive impacts of seaweed farms are evident. Seaweed farms and Shellfish Reefs are helping to clean unhealthy waterways that are suffering from everincreasing pollution and silt from coastal developments. They remove nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P); absorb heavy metals and CO2 (become carbon sinks); create habitat for marine life and will likely increase the fish found around the

area for anglers. Seaweed farms do not sterilise the ocean floor with waste matter, as do fish and prawn farms. Certainly, seaweed farms do not have the negative impacts, environmentally, visually, socially and economically created by the uncontrolled and unrestricted aggressive and destructive “leisure” activities already allowed in the Moreton Bay Marine Park. Jet skis, powerboats, 4WD recreational vehicles, for example, are having devastating impacts on passive leisure seekers and our internationally protected waterway and foreshore habitats upon which endangered species rely for caring for our special habitat and its resident’s survival. Not to mention, fireworks, loud open-air concerts and the increased use of beaches adjacent to Conservation Park for off-leash dog recreation. BIEPA is confident, the seaweed farm is one commercial enterprise that will be the least invasive, compared with the negative impacts other recent business, recreational and unsustainable tourism activities are having on local communities. special habitat and its resident’s survival. YOUR SAY

Letters Dear Editor,

A tale of fire and water: Once upon a time the small Australian township of Caloomba suffered a prolonged drought and the water level in its dam began to fall. There were about 240 families in Caloomba. The Wongs and the Shahs had 12 children each, but most households were smaller families, couples and singles. Many of the homes were little more than shacks, but some like the Wong’s home was under improvement. Barry McKenzie lived on his own, next door to his Uncle Sam and three cousins in the affluent part of town. Both their homes were luxurious with three bathrooms, fountains, a swimming pool and extensive irrigated lawns. Barry and his uncle had grown rich carting water to those families in the town who were not connected to the mains. He just loved taking long showers and hosing the dust off his driveway. When the council asked all the residents to save water, Barry and his cousin Donald were concerned that they would lose business, so they held a company meeting. Barry said, “Let’s do a letter drop suggesting that the

falling dam level is due to increased evaporation and leakage and not increased water consumption. We’ll say that it will come good just like it did before. Meanwhile, we can make our homes more resilient and petition the council to prevent any of the other homes from getting new bathrooms or swimming pools.” Donald agreed, adding “Besides we don’t use as much water as the Shahs or the Wongs, and the Wongs will use even more when they add their second bathroom. And what about all the other families? Cutting our consumption won’t make any difference to the dam level unless the other families do the same.” Months later, a fire ignited in Caloomba. Sadly, there was insufficient water for firefighting and many homes including Barry’s were lost. Barry was furious. He was heard cursing to his cousin Donald, “If only all those other families had reduced their water consumption like John Bull, Angela Merkel and Hans Andersen did, there would have been enough water to save my home.” I’m sure most readers think Barry’s attitude both selfish and short-sighted, but make the following substitutions: Caloomba is the Earth; the

Council is the UN; the 240 families are the countries of the world; the Wong family are China, the Shahs are India and Barry is Australia; carting water is exporting coal and saving water is reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Make all these substitutions into the story and suddenly you have the Australian Government’s policy on global warming. Martin Doré Banksia Beach

Dear Editor, I hope you can publish something about the attached photo as the woman who parked this car has no remorse and needs to be held accountable. I was disappointed at the self-righteousness attitude of an able bodied, mature aged female off to do

her shopping today. The photo attached shows how entitled she really believes she is and how precious her car is to her. Another shopper spoke to me while I was taking the photo and she said that she approached the driver who disregarded her comment about parking within the designated lines so that another shopper could use the space. Apparently she just shrugged her shoulders and walked away. If she cannot park a car she should surrender her licence. If she wants to park like that she should surrender her ego. The car park is busy. The shops are busy but who does this woman seriously think she is?

ACCESSORISE It’s amazing how small decorative items and accessories can make a huge impact in a room. Designers know the influence that rugs, lighting, throw pillows, art, and other accessories can have in a space and know how to use them wisely. Unfortunately, accessories and small decor can also break a space. Decorative items are the most

inexpensive way to freshen or add a new look to a room, but if a decorator is not careful, these items can quickly overtake the home. These simple tips for choosing, combining, and decorating with accessories can help you pull together your room like a pro and avoid the common mistakes many home dwellers make with their decor.Choose Quality Over Quantity

When it comes to room accessories, less is often more. One unique piece may work better in your space than loads of tiny knickknacks that have no value beyond price. CHOOSE ACCESSORIES THAT ARE THE CORRECT PROPORTION You’ve seen homes where dwellers have mistakenly chosen a postage-stamp rug in a coliseum-sized room. And those awkward walls where the too-large piece of art is crammed into a too-small space. Before

choosing and/or placing accessories, take the time to study scale and proportion and what fits best in your space. Scale and proportion are what help create a comfortable home and don’t cost a dime. COMBINE TEXTURES AND COLORS Neutrals are great in large furnishings and permanent fixtures, but inexpensive accessories are perfect to really break out with pops of color and varying textures. Accessories can

and should be used to add visual interest and contrast in a space, and accessories can easily and inexpensively be altered or exchanged to fit changing moods, styles, or seasons.

ADD ACCESSORIES IN LAYERS

Remember to mix colors, layers, and textures by choosing pieces of varying heights, widths, and styles. For additional contrast, mix vintage items in with new. Just remember, if you don’t absolutely love it, leave it sitting on the store shelf.

Think of accessories as decorations on a cake. Large accessories should be placed first and sparingly, with medium- and smallsized accessories filling in and adding balance where needed. Several small accessories can give the “feel” of a large item when grouped, but don’t forget to leave some breathing room. Not every nook and cranny in a room needs to be filled with the decor.

The Key to Good MENTAL WELLBEING By Veronica Mercer

Sleep

S

leep is controlled by the brain and is essential for human life. Impaired sleep adversely affects every organ in the body. In fact, we spend about a third of our lives asleep.

Let’s look at the science behind it. Sleep in many respects is a built-in biological source of resilience and the ability to bounce back. Sleep disorder occur when sleep patterns are disrupted. They are often serious enough to impact on our physical, mental, social and intellectual functioning. Sleep is vital because it serves several functions which are necessary for human survival.

THE FIRST FUNCTION

relates to the physical need for our bodies to rest. The body requires periods of sleep to; grow muscle, repair tissue and synthesize hormones

THE SECOND FUNCTION IS ABOUT; cognition and helping to consolidate memories. Sleep is an important factor in our ability to deal with

adversity and the demands of a busy life (National Sleep Foundation). During any given day, we are faced with large amounts of information that can’t possibly all be retained. It is at night while we sleep, that our brains do some work in processing and storing new information from the day, moving some parts of data from our shortterm memory stores into stronger, more stable, long-term memories. This is known as memory consolidation. There is a two-way link between mental health conditions and poor sleep.

as poor sleep increases the risk for depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions, if you have a mental health condition it can make sleep problems worse. One or two nights of poor sleep is not a problem, it becomes an issue if it’s the case over a long period of time. How much Sleep is Enough? Firstly, we know that everyone needs different amounts of sleep. However, there are sleep guidelines that give recommended hours of sleep for people of different ages. The National Sleep Foundation recommends;

IMPROVING SLEEP HYGIENE There are many simple ways to improve sleep. The first step for many people is to improve their sleep habits. A regular bedtime and waking time are essential. Avoiding stimulants before going to bed (cigarettes and caffeine). Exercise during the day (not too close to bedtime). Eating well. Ensuring the bedroom is quiet and dark, and the bed is comfortable. Removing all electronic screens from the bedroom this includes;

Poor sleep and poor mental health go hand in hand.

11-14 hours for babies and toddlers,

We do know that poor sleep and insomnia do pose a higher risk of mental illhealth issues like anxiety and depression.

9-11 hours for school age children,

computers and,

8-10 hours for teenagers and,

Some people may need to seek the assistance of a sleep psychologist and very occasionally the short-term use of medication may be helpful (Black Dog Institute).

Sleep disturbance like insomnia is both a symptom of depression and a risk factor for depression and anxiety. The risk of developing a mental health condition increases by up to 10 times for people who experience insomnia. The reverse is also true. Just

Weed Killers that WON’T Harm Plants Weeds are also called “invasive plants” because they invade your garden and spread. If left unchecked, a weed infestation can take over an entire yard and turn it into an eyesore. Many people have trouble dealing with aggressive weeds because the poisons and weed killers that work on the weeds also harm your regular garden plants. The following are all options you can exercise that will target weeds specifically and leave your other plants safe and sound.

VINEGAR

You probably have a weed killer in your home right this very minute. If not, you can buy one at any grocery store: vinegar.

Get undiluted white vinegar and pour it into a spray

bottle. Spray the vinegar directly on the weeds you wish to eliminate, and you’ll notice results within hours. Unlike many chemically created weed killing agents, vinegar is a natural and perfectly safe substance for you, your children, and your pets. Vinegar can be safely ingested (though the taste is rather unpleasant), and it can be touched with bare skin. Vinegar is also affordable when compared with formulated chemical killers. For best results, spray vinegar during a sunny day with minimal wind. The wind can carry vinegar away from weeds, and that’s not what you want. Vinegar can have adverse effects on other plants, but if you spray weeds directly it will not harm your other greenery or the

effective way to control garden bugs and pests. Spray it in areas where you’ve seen ants, slugs, or stray cats. The smell will keep them away.

BAKING SODA

You don’t have vinegar on hand? What about baking soda? This is another safe product that can be used for weed control. Spread baking soda directly on weed-ridden areas to make the soil less hospitable to weeds. Baking soda can easily be sprinkled into cracks and crevices where weeds appear, such as sidewalks and driveways.

SALTWATER

You can also boil two cups of water on the stove and add one cup of salt. Be sure to handle the boiling water carefully as you pour it directly onto weeds. Plain salt can also be used without the water, but you want to exercise caution with this. “Salting the fields” is known for making the soil inhospitable to plant life of

all kinds, so you want to be judicious.

MULCH

Spread mulch in the garden and landscaped areas to smother weed growth. If you notice weeds appearing in these areas, anyway, cover the area with newspaper. The newspaper will prevent light and air from getting to the soil, and that will kill weeds. Don’t cover the plants you want to save. Conclusion The best natural way to prevent weeds is to maintain a healthy lawn. Thick, lush grass offers little bare soil that weeds can latch onto. Keep your lawn looking good, and you’ll see a lot fewer weeds. Eliminate weeds safely by treating them directly and keeping your soil healthy. If you treat the weeds directly, you can get rid of the ones you don’t want and save all the others. Editorial sourced

WATER SAVING TIPS Turn the water off while you brush your teeth. Shower with a friend. Use your automatic dishwasher and clothes washer for full loads only. Keep a bottle of cold water in the refrigerator. This eliminates

the need to run the tap water until it is cold enough to drink. Check your toilet for leaks by putting a few drops of food colouring in your tank. If the colour shows up in the toilet bowl without flushing, you have a wasteful leak that is costing you money and is wasting water. Take shorter showers. Time yourself! Use a broom instead of water to clean your driveways, patios and sidewalks.

Don't run the hose while washing your car. Instead, fill a bucket with soapy water and then rinse. Only water your lawn when necessary. If the grass springs back after you step on it, then it does not need to be watered. Recycle water from fish tanks. Use it to water plants. Fish emulsion is a good, inexpensive fertilizer high in nitrogen and phosphorous. Check your taps for leaks today. Replace worn washers.

Never pour toxic chemicals down the drain, on the ground, or in the trash. Choose natural household cleaners like borax, ammonia, vinegar, and baking soda and recycle hazardous household waste at waste collection centres. Promote water conservation by watering trees and plants only once a week. Place a layer of mulch around trees and plants to retain water.

HOME & GARDEN consumers in Queensland. Is this creating jobs? The small businesses of Queensland are our largest employers, One may not have a job if this backdoor tax, puts these owned monopoly, who in turn businesses in to liquidation!!!! take a considerable dividend, The State Government is using $378 m 2016/17 & a predicted this electrical dividend to prop $463m 2017/18 (Queensland up their treasury!!!!! Government budget papers 2017/18). They justify this by blaming

ELECTRICAL ENERGY & CLIMATE CHANGE By Bill Hinte The western world relies on a stable, regular comparatively cheap supply of generated electricity! Much of it Coal or Gas fired. Today in Australia for various reasons, this has become a problem, particularly the costs to consumers. Prices have risen around 200% in recent years & over a fairly short time span. It has been said by several Queensland State Government people that placing the Retail electricity market in private enterprise hands would bring down the price of energy to the consumer?? COMPETITION IN THE MARKET PLACE WOULD ENSURE THAT WAS SO! In Queensland the wholesale supply of electricity is almost a complete Government

This same State Government is saying regularly that cheap energy is required by small business to be viable in this competitive world?

Let me be very clear here! This government takes a considerable dividend & then says that we need cheap power to be competitive & that same Government is saying again on regular basis that it is all about creating jobs? Would someone explain to this naive writer how that is supposed to work, when our State Government imposes a backdoor tax on all electricity

the retail power companies, who in turn are saying that the ancient infrastructure that they inherited needs considerable investment to bring it up the modern standards???? Who owns this infrastructure? As I understand this Energy Queensland!!! Energy Queensland is a State Government entity! Makes one wonder, just a bit?? That is the costing conundrum. Now the Environmental Question? We are constantly told that Global warming is caused by manmade pollution, or

variations of this theme, & that CO2 is the main greenhouse gas that affects the atmosphere. Well yes in some ways that is true, however let me ask a question here, Is it not so that CO2 is the main food source for trees & all other plants? (I will not spoil the

politicians thinking on this by mentioning the Chlorophyll cycle), after all, the chemical symbol CO2, is easy to say when they are throwing out some speech that may see them as caring environmentalists? Carbon

Monoxide (CO) kills far more people than CO2, yet only makes up around 5/8% of the emission combustion exhaust gasses, given off. Another question that comes to mind, is it too much CO2 being produced that causes this pollution, or is the fact that too many trees

worldwide have been cut down? Some 25 years ago the Amazon valley was credited with the production of around 20% of the world’s oxygen, today that figure is around 8/12%, it varies

HOME & GARDEN Weather patterns have a depending on one’s source. reasonably predictable cycle, Let me take this a little these weather cycles are further, the Standing forests proven by the various core of Malaysia, New Guinea & samples taken around the the Philippines were once the world, showing patterns that largest Pristine forests in the are millions of years old! world, in recent years they have been harvested to a very large degree, leaving vast tracts barren or under local cultivation.

I think that the only policy that the Greens have correct is that trees should not be cut down unless absolutely necessary, I would add that we all should plant some additional tress, maybe then we would get some of that oxygen back? Has anyone noticed that the “Global Warming” theme has changed to “Climate Change”? Well just maybe that is because in the past decade or so, we have not had an increase in world average temperatures!!! Sure some parts have had warmer than average temperatures, while others colder than Average.

The link to electricity & Climate Change is the fact that most of our electricity is generated using either Coal or gas powered boilers to generate the steam to power the turbines that in turn generate the electricity.

The burning of these Fossil fuels does give off exhaust gasses, however when the Television programs show all the gas escaping into the atmosphere, that is good television, not in fact the escaping exhaust greenhouse gasses, it is the steam cooling tower exhaust condensing into the atmosphere! Never let the truth get in the way of good television!!!!! Modern power station are required to have a standard

of emission, set by regulatory authorities that keeps these emissions within the regulations, Scrubbers & other technologies are in use to follow this requirement! That is not to say that they are clean altogether, they do emit some greenhouse gasses, however if one includes all our best technological efforts with both Internal combustion engines in motor vehicles & power company emissions all in one, then consider that just one Volcanic eruption anywhere in the world will place all those manmade emissions into insignificance!!!! That does not mean that we should not apply technology to cleaning up our own emissions, we do contribute, but no were near what the doomsayers are spruiking at this time! After all every little bit helps! Cheers, Bill HINTE, JP, Qual. Dip Engineering. Dip, Teaching. (Retired)

With my previous career being very proactive in customer service and customer expectations as this is paramount in our local transfer business. Our business was born from Bribie Rideshare four years ago, to now be trading as Your Personal Transfers. On-time, reliable door to door service, featuring luxury vehicles, a timetable that suits the client, no luggage in cabin policy for comfort and above all safety, and importantly pre-pickup text so you can track our arrival. This is reassuring to the client knowing we are on our way making a stress-free journey.
