Dear Readers,
I hope you all have been enjoying the wet weather we have been having. I know my lawn is the best it has been in a long time! Nice and green, timing in perfectly with St Patrick’s Day! Speaking of which, there are a lot of our local cafés and restaurants that are celebrating St Patrick’s Day, so why not go and enjoy something different! On the subject of something different, you will have noticed I have changed our layout in the magazine. We are trying to put in something for everyone, you will see we now have kid’s pages, handy tips and suggestions, motoring tips and home decorating ideas. Not only that, we have had a lot of fantastic contributions being submitted, to the point I have had to rotate some of our regular features to every second edition. As we pride ourselves on being a local magazine, for the locals, about the locals, I would love some feedback from you, our readers. Is there something you would love to see in the magazine? What is it that you like or dislike about it? Please feel free to email me with your suggestions. I certainly encourage your feedback.

Carers take a break with McKenzie Aged Care
I
t’s true when they say, to properly look after someone, you first have to take good care of yourself. Caring for a family member does have so many rewards. No one is denying that. But reports in recent years have also highlighted the challenges. Broken sleep, being housebound, things like lifting and even the repetition of doing the same thing every day can and will take its toll. Carers often suffer from fatigue, bad backs, anxiety and other chronic health conditions. This is why every carer should factor in respite as
part of the regime. Whether it’s a week or two here, ten days there, or even a weekend every month, regular respite is essential and, at McKenzie Aged Care, we are here to help you with that.
they like to have breakfast to make sure they take all their medications. It is about knowing what they like to do and letting them still enjoy these things. Our staff will be there to stop for a chat throughout their stay and ensure they’re comfortable and content. Everyone who comes to stay with us will even make
friends and lots of them. So respite is not just about to care, but companionship as well.
Just speak to McKenzie Aged Care on 1300 899 222 about your respite needs. This way you can take that regular break, to well and truly relax, whenever you feel the need.
Up until recent times, most carers believed that no one else could do what they do, as well as they do it. But family-owned McKenzie is becoming very popular for short term stays. Because people who use our respite know we will care for their loved ones as if they are our own. This, of course, means keeping to routines, everything from the time

International Womens Day 2020
I
nternational Women’s Day celebrate all women, in all their diversities. IWD embrace their facets and intersections of faith, race, ethnicity, gender or sexual identity, or disability. IWD celebrate those who came before us, those who stand beside us now, and those who will come after.
It’s a time to celebrate the achievements of women, whether social, political, economic or cultural.
on progress, to call for change and to celebrate the courage and determination of the women who changed history, and those who will advance gender equality into the future. International Women’s Day is an occasion to review how far women have come in their struggle for equality, peace and development. It is also an opportunity to unite, network and mobilises for meaningful change.
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY IN AUSTRALIA Australia’s first International Women’s Day was held in 1928 in Sydney. Organised by the Militant Women’s Movement, women called for equal pay for equal work, an 8-hour working day for shop girls and paid leave. The next year the event spread to Brisbane. In 1931, annual marches were launched in both Sydney and Melbourne and both marches continue to be held today. Since these early days, International Women’s Day has continued to grow. It is a day to celebrate women’s achievements and both highlight and work to address barriers that continue to perpetuate gender inequality. International Women’s Day has become a time to reflect

INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY SHERIDAN BLANCHARD-DURBIDGE
SIMONE WILSON - Strong women lift each other up – we’re captains of our own soul and masters of our own fate. As the words of Helen Reddy play in my head, our wisdom is born of pain, we’re not novices any longer and we’re more determined to achieve our final goal. WE ARE STRONG, WE ARE INVINCIBLE, WE ARE WOMAN!
Many women never stop and think about how they may be judging themselves based on an outdated image of success. Success for me is pride in what I am doing and who I am being. A mother, a business owner, a wife, a step-grandma, a friend. Whatever hat I am wearing, I pride myself in doing the best that I can. It means having the wisdom to be grateful for what you are doing whilst still being hungry enough for change and growth. We as women never stop learning and changing, whether it’s our bodies that are changing or our mindset we are always growing.
A wise person once wrote – “A women with a book and a pen has the power to move nations. A woman with a mind and a voice has the power to change worlds”. HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY TO THE GLORIOUS WOMEN OF PUMICESTONE.

International Women’s Day, which began in the early 1900’s is a day to celebrate how far we have come as women, an equal world where every lady has the freedom to aspire and achieve, to honour the feminist struggles through many generations. Women’s value has been under recognised for far too long, and acknowledgment of this helps to create a more equal world. One of the wonderful things about our area is the high level of volunteer involvement in community groups and causes. And older women are always on the front lines! Whether it’s fundraising for domestic violence survivors, raising awareness about organ donation or protecting our natural environment, so many older women work hard into their retirement years to make our community better. Ladies, I am humbled by all you do. Thank you! “

Food, Wine & Island Times Abbey Museum’s A Crusader’s Journey raises over $7000 for bushfire relief. BY: Kate Walters
O
n Saturday, February 8th, the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology welcomed guests to an evening of medieval food, drinks, laughs and entertainment to raise funds for the small town of Genoa in the Gippsland Region of Victoria. The community of Genoa tirelessly defended their homes and their loved ones from the bushfires the ravaged the town on December 31st and destroyed the historic Genoa River Bridge, as well as claiming the life of a muchcherished member of the community. Abbey Medieval Festival Event Manager Michelle Hanton said the response
from the local community with such short notice was truly amazing. “We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of community support from both the re-enactors and local businesses - as well as both sides of politics,” said Ms. Hanton. The evening blended the Crusades with an evening full of feasting and entertainment, including a handful of Queensland’s Medieval Reenactment community. The Crusader’s theme was included down to the rich catering provided by award-winning chef Robert Van Buerle, who merged medieval cultures and tastes to further immerse the guests. The night raised over $7,332, which was donated to Genoa Town Committee, organised by residents Melissa Peisley and Kayla Severs.
Ms. Severs said she the event looked like a fantastic night created by “a bunch of amazing people.” “Genoa will be so thankful,” she said. The Genoa Victoria Bushfire appeal for community GoFundMe is raising funds to help rebuild the community of Genoa. The funds will go directly towards rebuilding the community and will be distributed equally amongst residents who have been affected by the bushfires.

NEWS Well, the rain has brought much relief to lots of remote areas in our country and some cooler weather for us Queenslanders. On the advertising front, I’ve been flat out. It seems our gloss magazine being the only one of its kind in our area, and being such a great read is becoming so popular with the advertisers scrambling to get in that I had to give up my space last edition. I hope you enjoyed our new restaurant/cafe feature last issue that will appear in every second issue for 10 issues, highlighting a different business each month. have very mixed feeling about our South East Queensland Summers; all that heat and humidity. I found it particularly trying when I first came to Bribie and made my feelings quite clear to my longsuffering husband. However, there are, and were compensations. The birds are beautiful, and the birdbath and feeder that we got for Xmas came into their own. The bath was an instant success with many birds using it for drinking and for taking a cooling plunge, but it took them a little longer to work out how to use the feeder. Eventually, some avian Einstein solved the problem, and then we had Pale Headed Rosellas, turquoise and

My husband and I loved to watch them as they impatiently waited their turn to join the honeyeaters, butcherbirds and magpies in the bath. Visiting the trees in the yard were mobs of white Corellas, a smaller version of the Cockatoo and just as noisy. Competing with the Corellas were the beautiful pink and soft-grey Galahs, my particular favourite. The magnificent Yellowtailed Black Cockatoos gave notice of their occasional visits by the distinctive loud cracking of the Banksia and Cassia nuts on which they fed. and no Australian trees for us to enjoy.
By Christine Wilson A most remarkable phenomenon is happening right now here on Bribie Island. Thousands of the Little Red Flying Foxes have come to enjoy the flowering trees. They are the only flying fox in the world that almost exclusively eats nectar. As many Australian eucalypts and related trees only make pollen at night, the bats are their pollinators as the bees only work in the daytime. So, without these remarkable creatures and their cousins, the Black, Grey Headed and Spectacled flying foxes pollinating, there would be no koalas

A Story to Tell? Send it into: thebribieislander@gmail.com
With so much devastation at present, please be conscious of the need for these Little Red Bats. They are migratory so will not stay long. They will be noisy and maybe a little on the nose, but this is a small disturbance for us for a short time for the valuable work they do for us humans and all creatures that need trees. Living in strong family groups they hang together and fly together en masse making highways in the sky at dusk. Something more than remarkable – a gift for us to observe in wonder! Although thought of as a threat to humans, they do not attack. If a bat is sick or injured and on the ground no member of the public should touch it but should call Wildlife Rescue Queensland on 0478 901 801 to assist the bat.
While Little Reds are not regarded as endangered yet, the Australian government lists Grey-headed Flying Foxes as vulnerable. The recent clearing of trees near where the Little Reds are now camping disturbed the Greys and the Blacks, many of which had youngsters depending on them. They need all the help they can get to raise their families. Look upwards in awe as they fly on the highways of the sky. Look closely at their translucent wings and
remember without these bats, no trees, no tree dwellers, negatively impacting on our wellbeing.

y regular articles about Bribie History are generally bases on research and information from up 100 years ago, but 60 years ago is much more recent. The last article about a “Future Vision for Bribie” was a bit different and got some interesting reactions. It is easy to forget about things as recently as just 60 years ago. For some “senior” readers the 1960s will be vivid memories, while for younger people it is like
ancient history. This article is a reminder of some fascinating events back then, with articles and advertisements from local newspapers at that time. Back then, a dozen bottles of Beer were just

$4.28, and a very smart new Automatic Washing Machine was only $129. In 1962 Bribie, a year before the Bribie Bridge opened, Bribie ran its own newspaper, the “Bribie Star”, for 10 years until the
early 1970s. Newspaper headlines from that time provide an insight into the topical and political issues and news from that era. Here are some news items that were taken from the Bribie Star that you might find interesting.
NEW BUILDINGS ON BRIBIE
HISTORY
With the building of the bridge to Bribie, new business opportunities opened up, including a Recreation & Sports Centre in Cotterill Avenue built by Hendon & Sons. It offered Roller Skating, Quoits, Dancing and indoor Bowls, together with various Boating Services. The building later became a Cinema for a few years, after that was “Busy Fingers” Op shop for 22 years and is now the Baptist Church.
When the Bribie Bridge opened, you could build a new two-bedroom home on Bribie for $2176, with just $100 deposit.
INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT
In 1967, it was proposed to approach the Government about the construction a major Oil Terminal in the Pumicestone Passage area, to unload Oil cargoes from large new Oil Tankers being built.
There was also a Caboolture Shire Council election in 1967 in which a record number of 28 candidates nominated for election. There were 3 Bribie people who nominated for election as Chairman of the Council. The article mentions the names of Boyd, Schrag, Latcham. Unwin and Rickman, who are all wellremembered people from Bribie’s past, who have streets or Parks named for them.

expensive Toll to be paid to cross the Bridge, created much concern in the community. This led to further agitation for Bribie Island to succeed from Caboolture Shire Council. and become its own self-Governing Council. There was even talk of a Council takes over the Bribie Bridge from the State Government, who had built it, to have direct control of the Bridge Toll revenue.
CUT THROUGH THE ISLAND In 1968 an even more amazing proposal was put forward, to cut a channel through the north of Bribie Island, into Pumicestone Passage, and build a new access road up the middle of the island, and new Bridge to the mainland.
LOOKING BACK AT LIFE

OPEN HOUSE & MARKET DAY On Saturday 28th March the oldest and grandest house on Bribie will be open to the public for inspection. This is “Coungeau House” at 36 Banya Street, Bongaree, which was built in 1915 by Emily and Norman Coungeau as their retirement home, after running a very successful continental Restaurant in Queen Street, Brisbane, for many years.
Emily became a recognised poet and lyricist, working on the shady veranda of the house, she wrote many poems and the words of the first Australian Opera performed by a professional theatre company. At the end of their lives, they had become significant patrons of the Arts and donors to charitable causes. In 1936 they gifted their magnificent home to the Church of England as a holiday retreat for clergy and their families, which it was for more than 40 years. During the years of World War 2, the house was occupied by the military and used as a base and HQ by high ranking American and Australian officers. In the early 1970s, the building was passed to the TOC-H organisation as a holiday home for those with disabilities and in need.
Open for Viewing
Saturday 28th March is an opportunity for the public to enjoy and open house viewing with information and a presentation about the historic building, the original owners, and the various interesting occupants over its 105-year history.
WHEN; 10 am – 2, pm Saturday 28th March WHERE; 36 Banya Street, Bongaree. of rest and refuge for soldiers, regardless of rank, impacted by the horrors of World War 1. The name Toc-H comes from the signallers call sign T and H, being an abbreviation of, “Talbot House”, founded by Neville Talbot and
Queensland born army chaplain the Rev. Phillip “Tubby” Clayton, near Flanders in 1915 After the War, the Toc-H organisation, and it’s great and much-needed charity work spread throughout the world, and in 1925 “Tubby” Clayton brought it to Australia. Coungeau House is the only property owned by Toc-H in Queensland and has been run as a holiday home for the needy since it was acquired from the Church of England in the early 1970s. Extensive renovations were carried out with funds raised by the Bribie Island committee and donations by the local community. Dormitories provide accommodation for holiday children, and the extensive Hall constructed under the classic Queensland house is well used by many local organisations.
Toc-H is not for a profit charity organisation, and the purpose of the day is to allow the public to see and appreciate the facilities. Its primary role is as an inexpensive holiday and respite venue for families, carers and support organisations for the disadvantaged, and those with disability. Bribie Rotary is arranging for several groups of
children in western Queensland, impacted by recent events, to come to Bribie Island for a muchneeded holiday in the next two months There will also be an opportunity to support the organisation by enjoying morning tea or purchasing gifts and handmade Items from a range of stalls in the grounds. Funds raised will assist with general maintenance, facility upgrade and running costs. The open day will also include a variety of entertainment including an informative presentation about the history of Coungeau House, and the Toc H organisation. Saturday 28th is Council Election Day, so put this special house visit on your schedule, after you have voted.

All items received will be cleaned, appropriately labelled and priced and will be placed in the same area as before, as you come in the door turn left. Some customers have been unpleasant when approaching our cashier and volunteers about this change, please be aware it is out of our control and this is the only way we can continue to sell electrical items. It has to be this way, or we cease selling all electrical goods. We sincerely thank our customers for their understanding in this matter.
VOLUNTEERS
We always have room for a few more volunteers to help us, if you can spare a few
We have to apologise for the unavailability of 2 of our cooling systems, which have been out of action for 3 weeks, they require new motors and we are hoping they will be repaired and in action, by the time this goes to print. They are situated in the front of the building and are the oldest of the five systems, we know it can be hot depending on the weather and humidity, but we try to keep the shop as cool as possible for both our volunteers and customer

FOOTY SEASON
Just before Christmas, we gave a helping hand to the new Bribie Island Seniors Rugby League Football Club with Club shirts and shorts and training shirts. They will be playing at the Warrigals venue on the island and will be competing in the Sunshine Coast League, they will have a senior Division 2A team and will hopefully field an under 18’s team. So, if any young guys want to play footy please give it a go, we may have another Matt Gillett or Jack Reed in the making. If you are interested in playing for the seniors or the under 18’s please call Paul Kelly 0409 343154 or send a message to bribiewarrigals@ bigpond.com he would like to hear from you.
REQUEST FOR PRESENTATIONS AND DONATIONS
If you are a member of an island club or association and require assistance, please let us know. We try to assist all not for profit associations
and sporting clubs, we also assist the Police, SES, VMR and the BI Hospice. Our President Karen is quite happy to come along to your club and present our aims and goals and how your club can apply for assistance. Please call 3410 1920 or email busyfingers1@bigpond.com if you wish to have a presentation or if you wish to apply for a grant of assistance. When applying for assistance please include a contact name and phone number and a current equipment quote, tell us a bit about your association/club and membership and why you need the equipment you are requesting. Please be aware we only deal with island associations and groups, not individuals. Finally, I would like to mention that our staff and volunteers have had some uncomfortable situations in the last month; often it is over something trivial such as when a customer does not find what they are looking for or are unhappy with the safety rules we have in place or just come when they have had a bad day and want to take it out on someone. Our staff and volunteers try to help all our customers, they are not there to be shouted at or abused, this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated. In future, anyone who becomes abusive will be asked to leave and not return. We want everyone to enjoy their visit to the shop both our volunteers and our customers. Thank You once again to all our supporters and Richard and the Bribie Islander family for their continued support. Hope to see you in the shop soon. Sandra

To this day, Colin still records and mixes his own CDs. Colin started work as a Painter and Decorator over 40 years ago in Melbourne and continued his trade when he moved to Queensland with his family in 1994. It was through this
trade that he discovered a further use for Dulux paints, which to this day, is still his preferred medium when capturing a new artwork! He is an accomplished local glass-artist who has trained in this medium at Canberra Powerhouse glassworks and the Kirra Gallery in Melbourne and enjoys creating his glass-pieces for exhibition or sale.
Graham has successfully exhibited prize-winning works, selling, his work through the Gladstone Rio-Tinto Art Competition, the Mathew Flinders Art competition and other exhibitions and art galleries, as well as creating commissioned pieces on request. Graham’s joint exhibition, with two other local artists at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre will be a highlight in his artscareer and will showcase the range and variety of items that he creates.

We have a lot of great ideas to make our club a Family Friendly Club, but we NEED your help. Unfortunately our last Maintenance day we only had a handful of volunteers, hence why we had to hold another one. It takes a Community to run a Community club. This is also another opportunity to purchase Merchandise. The Senior Men Tigers participated in the FFA CUP Round 2 last weekend it was a really tough game with the Musgrave Mustangs taking out the victory. Unfortunately this means we have been knocked out of the competition.

DABI with NIPPLES ON RIPPLES 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY REGATTA ON LAKE BARRINGTON, TASMANIA
After departing Bribie just before the torrential rain set in, seventeen DABI members were greeted by beautiful weather in Tasmania. To see the lake early in the morning, before its surface is broken by watercraft is something to behold – water like glass with perfect reflections of the tall slender white trunked eucalypts mirrored along the far bank.
You have read recently about the Bribie Island Croquet Club but where and when did this all start? The name Croquet comes from the French for hockey stick which is what the game was originally played with before mallets were used. The game was introduced to England around 1851, with both sexes playing the game, the ladies in their elaborate crinoline dresses. But the clergy found this very immoral, how could that be?? Well, the young men would knock the ladies’ ball into the bushes and then gallantly go and help her find it. This usually resulted in the young lady coming out flushed and straightening her dress whilst the gentleman had a broad grin on his face!! I should stress here that at Bribie we have fences. In 1860 the All England Croquet Club at Wimbledon was opened but tennis was becoming more popular so each Croquet court was turned into two tennis courts. In 1900 Croquet was an Olympic sport but was stopped in 1912 as so few countries played Croquet. Now it is a very popular sport, perhaps it should be reintroduced in the Olympics? To finish – a funny story. A wealthy boss who had his own Croquet court had an annual competition with his staff, refusal was not an option! As the staff hardly ever played croquet, the boss always won. One young man who was a good player decided this had
speaker and DAA patron, Robyn Moore. The evening had a ‘regal’ theme, so guests came attired in all sorts of royal regalia. Music and dancing continued into the night. It was a fantastically well organized and friendly weekend.
to stop and planned a few changes! Knowing his boss always played with the blue and black balls he obtained two new replacements which were a few millimetres larger and replaced the boss’s balls with these. The boss had more and more trouble making the hoops and was beaten. (I think someone has done this to me!!) However, he realized something was wrong, checked the balls and found the culprit. He called him over and said “What you have done is the most base, corrupt, unprincipled and dishonourable thing I have ever seen from one of my employees.” He then said “I think with your ingenuity and cunning I will promote you to a manager “ Well, we at the croquet club are not underhanded, we are a friendly bunch, so come on down and see us. Call President Dick Byres on 0488 282 959 and come and have a go.
Eight dragon boating clubs from Launceston, Devonport, North Esk, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, and of course Bribie Island, met at the pristine and magnificent Lake Barrington to celebrate Nipples on Ripples’ 10th anniversary. Saurday was race day with plenty of action, some involving 20 paddlers, some with 10, over varying lengths of 250metres, 500 metres and a 1km race for those who weren’t already depleted. During the lunch break, we were treated to an inspiring drumming performance by a very talented group. In the evening we gathered at the lake for a delicious dinner and some very humorous entertainment from guest
Sunday morning, we headed off along the lake in 5 dragon boats for a leisurely paddle to the waterfalls. After travelling approximately 11 kilometres we paused briefly for morning tea. Caboolture Hospital New Emergency Dept Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services The Honourable Steven Miles PALASZCZUK GOVERNMENT BOOSTS HEALTHCARE IN CABOOLTURE Caboolture Hospital has a brand-new Emergency Department thanks to a $3.4 million investment by the Palaszczuk Government. Health Minister Steven Miles said that the new Emergency Department would help relieve pressure on the busy hospital while the State Government continued its $352.9 million major redevelopments.
SHAVE FOR A CURE Hi, my name is Denise Vieritz and I’m taking part in the Shave for a cure this year. I have done it before as it is close to my heart and I’m doing it for my sister who is a fighter, other family members who sadly have passed and others around the world who suffer in hopes to raise awareness and funds to find a cure.
with the care they need,” Minister Ryan said.
“Caboolture Hospital is one of Queensland’s busiest hospitals, with our hardworking ED staff need support to keep up with a booming population and increased demand,” Minister Miles said. Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan said Caboolture Hospital would soon host two innovative mental healthcare units to better treat mental health patients.
“The Short Stay Unit will mean mental health patients can bypass emergency departments and be treated by specialist staff faster in an environment designed for their specific needs. “That, combined with the new Step Up Step Down youth mental health facility in the Caboolture CBD, means that Caboolture locals experiencing a mental health crisis can get the
care they need.” The $352.9 million redevelopments of Caboolture Hospital and $41.7 million multi-storey car park also remain on track. In the picture from left to right are: Metro North Board Member Dr Robert Franz, State Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan, State Health Minister Steven Miles, Caboolture Hospital Director Nursing and Midwifery Julie Lahey and Caboolture Hospital Emergency Department Medical Director Dr Sean Keogh touring the new Emergency Department.
“Emergency Departments aren’t always the best place to treat mental health patients, it can be overwhelming and doesn’t always connect them I am doing the shave at the ECO Kids Early Learning Centre Bongaree in recognition of our families and the children who have made this day possible. I want to take a moment to acknowledge and say a big thank you to Anna and Terry who own this beautiful boutique childcare service, the Eco team, children and families for their support. It’s been amazing to also have so many small local businesses including Aussie Select Meats
and seafood, Big bun, Saviges seafood, Knotty Kreations, Woolworths Banksia Beach, Sues café and takeaway, BRP Automotive, Banta creations, Analiese Pollard Tupperware and The Bribie Islander Magazine who have supported me by donating gifts and vouchers for a raffle draw within the centre for our families. We also have the lovely Jilly from Island Style Hairdressing to do the honour of shaving my head on the day. My goal is $1,000 and I am so close to reaching it

To my Community, Four years ago, you put your trust in me to serve our division and it has been an honour to be your voice in Council, but I am asking again for your trust to serve our division in the upcoming council election on March 28. I love our area, I love our community and I have worked tirelessly to represent our division with energy, dedication and enthusiasm. At the March 28 election, over 80 years of experience will depart from council, so it is clear now more than ever we need strong representation for our community and experience to fight for our fair share. I believe I have that experience and if privileged enough to have your support I will continue to listen and represent you, while working hard to deliver for you, the residents that make our community great. Rotary’s World’s Greatest Meal By Anne Matthews
Sharing a meal with family and friends is an age-old tradition that allows people to get together, relax and enjoy each other’s company. As American Civil Rights activist Cesar Chavez said ‘if you want to make a friend, go to someone’s house and eat with him... the people who give you their food give you their heart.’
immunise over 2.5 billion children worldwide.
With this idea of sharing food in mind, Rotarians Susanne Rea OAM from the Rotary Club of Cairns Sunrise, Australia and Mukesh Malhotra of the Rotary Club of Hounslow, England, founded Rotary’s World’s Greatest Meal (WGM) to raise much-needed funds to help Rotary’s End Polio campaign.
Orson Welles once said ‘My doctor told me I had to stop throwing intimate dinners for four unless there are three other people.’ However, there is no limit to the number of participants in a WGM. Numbers can be anywhere between an intimate dinner for two, to a large group of hundreds or thousands. We have even had a meal with one participant.
Poliomyelitis (Polio) is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The disease is a virus which is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine – one which Rotary and our partners have used to
So, what is a WGM? Well, a WGM is an easy way to bring people together to share a meal and at the same time raise awareness of polio, and money to vaccinate children against the disease. It is a similar concept to the Cancer Council’s ‘Biggest Morning Tea.’
You can have a group of family, friends, workmates, University or School groups. The meal can be an extravagant gourmet dinner, a light lunch, a big breakfast, a picnic, a BBQ, a morning, afternoon or high tea, a coffee and cake meeting or a wine, cheese and chocolate evening. There is no limit to the numbers or type of meal. The campaign is about
raising funds and having fun and fellowship while you do so. Recently there has been so much bad press regarding overheads for Charities and how much of your donation goes to the cause. With WGM 100% of the money raised goes to the End Polio Campaign. As well, ‘The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’ adds US$2 to every dollar raised. Donations are posted on a Facebook Page giving the results of each registered meal. The ‘results post’ includes the number of participants, the amount raised, the
amount including the Gates contribution, the number of vaccinations this will allow, and a couple of photos of the event. Simply having a tin/ money box available for contributions without any pressure on anyone to donate is a good idea. Perhaps a gold coin is a minimum – but many insert $5 or $10 notes. We often ‘tip’ a waiter at a restaurant 10-20% of the bill and this could be seen along the same lines. We think nothing of adding $20 to the bill. Such a contribution in the case of a WGM, though, goes to such a worthy cause and becomes $60 after the Gates contribution. WGM was founded in 2014. As of 13 February 2020, 395,041 meals with 594,606 participants have been held in 82 countries. These meals
have raised US$3,601,168 (US$10,803,503 with ‘The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’ contribution). This has allowed the vaccinations of over 18 million children! It was Pope Francis who said ‘when we are generous in welcoming people and sharing something with them - some food, a place in our homes, our time - not only do we no longer remain poor: we are enriched.’ So, let us all hold regular WGMs, to help raise the money, AND because a meal with friends is good for our souls.
On 22 January 2020, Rotary International (RI) announced a further three-year continuation of the partnership with ‘The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.’ RI needs to raise US$50 million per year to meet the commitment of this partnership. Registering and reporting a Meal is a simple procedure. You just go to the Website: https://wgmeal.com/ and follow the links. When you register your event you will be asked to nominate your Rotary Club and District. The minimum amount is US$10 (Approximately $15) and the amount does need to be reported in US$. In closing a final comment by Oscar Wilde is apt and might convince us all to act. ‘After a good dinner, one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relations’.’

Not very clever, but it is not conscious behaviour. The fiddle response is trickier. It involves creating a diversionary behaviour (such as yawning). This occurs when your pet does not know what else to do, and nature offers up some odd, deep lizard-brain behaviour.

All breeds regardless of sex, age and size have the potential to be aggressive at some stage of their lives. Every animal has a defence mechanism of fight/ flight. But some breeds were intentionally bred to fight for entertainment either with one another or to fight other species for eg bulls and bears. Common breeds that were used in the past exist today: Akita, American Pit Bull Terriers, American and English Staffordshire Terriers, Bull Terriers, Kerry Blue Terrier, Neapolitan Mastiff and Shar Peis. Dogfighting can be traced back to Ancient Roman times. In America, they imported English Staffordshire Terriers and dog fighting became popular from 1817. Dogfighting is illegal in most countries, but still legal in Japan, parts of
Snake
Russia and most of Albania. Certain breeds are restricted in Australia and cannot be bred or imported: Dogo Argentino, Tosa, Fila Brasileiro, Perro de Presa Canario and the American Pit Bull Terrier. Unfortunately restricting and banning breeds has not lowered dog attack incidents. Terrier breeds as a class group are found to be more dog to dog aggressive than any other classes due to their tenacity as they were bred to hunt and kill vermin and foxes. As I stated in the first paragraph it has nothing to do with the breed and we cannot point a finger at a breed and say that is why it is aggressive. In next month’s issue, I’ll cover puppies and the importance of meeting their parents. Happy training Yvonne.

LOCAL FIREFIGHTER LAUNCHES
TOURISM TOOL TO SUPPORT SUNNY COAST SMALL BUSINESS LOCAL FIREY SAVING MORE THAN JUST HOUSES. Jesse Manning, a local Sunshine Coast Firefighter, has been working on both the frontline and behind the scenes, to minimise the devastating impacts of Australia’s recent bushfires. When he’s not running into burning buildings or rescuing wildlife, he’s using his tech expertise to support small businesses on the Coast. Jesse recently launched PortSide Australia, an online platform that aims to connect water-based businesses with their customers, and ultimately promote
Sunny Coast tourism. “The bushfire crisis has had such a devastating impact on our country in so many ways - it’s no secret that our tourism industry has taken a major hit this season.” As the Sunshine Coast is ranked amongst the top 10 of all Australian Tourism Regions, pulling in over 3 billion dollars on average in visitor expenditure annually, Jesse feared the impact a national tourism slump may have on our community. “The Sunshine Coast is loved by locals and tourists for all things in, on, and under the water - I knew a decline in tourism would hit us hard.” After seeing, first-hand, the impact of this fire season on local businesses, Jesse said he “wanted to do something to help.” Subsequently, he decided to “create a tool that showcases this magnificent part of the world while supporting the
small businesses in our community.” PortSide Australia was launched in January 2020 and already averages over 300 visitors to the site daily, currently hosting over 200 business listings. The website allows users to browse, find, connect with, and review, local water-based businesses and activities, from boat hire, to surf lessons, to water-sport equipment rental, to fishing and tackle stores. In addition, PortSide allows businesses a platform to promote their products and services through photos, video, social media, and events pages. “After feedback from visitors to the coast, I learned that so many Sunny Coast businesses had a limited online presence: no website or social media profiles, difficult to navigate sites, or simply weren’t appearing in search results.” As a result, Jesse described working

SALAD
IN A JAR
WHAT YOU NEED. Mason jar, dressing, carrots, ham, peas, corn, avocados, carrots, greens and you can add croutons for some crunch. For softer foods like the avocados and ham, you can show your child how to cut them up. The avocado can be cut using a butter knife and ham with scissors. TIP: scissors work great for helping little hands “chop” up foods vs. using knives. Layout all your ingredients on one large platter so they’ll be easier to layer. Ask your child to start layering. You want to start with the dressing first, so it doesn’t get the other foods too soggy. Add 2-3 tablespoons of dressing. Then start layering from
the heaviest to lightest foods ending with the salad greens. dressing, carrots, ham, peas, corn, avocados, carrots, greens. You may want to put in just a small amount of leafy greens. You will find kids don’t want to chew large pieces of green leaves which makes them turn away from salads. This approach was to fill up the salad with lots of other kid-friendly veggies they’re more used to seeing (peas, corn, avocado, carrots). Adding fruits naturally sweetens up the salad and makes it more appealing to kids. Don’t be afraid to add fruits like strawberries,
blueberries, raspberries, even peaches or apples. The salad is done and now comes the extra fun part. At this point, you can refrigerate the salad and eat it later. But if you’re ready to eat it now, ask your child to shake up the jar. This they seem to love. Not are they going to be eating healthier, they will be learning new skills at the same time!!!

With discovery-based math games like this you will probably notice that your child will naturally identify the numbers without prompting. Not only are they having fun, they are learning at the same time! No matter how old your child or adult is, this is still a great game to play!

We live on an island and we do have lots of shells and the summer is often filled with discovering them along the shore. Alternatively, you can get them at craft or bargain stores. This math and English game works on memory, number and word recognition. Using these types of games to teach is a great way for parents to connect to what kids are learning and become participants not just observers. Check all the shells for sharp edges before letting your kids play with them, some can be broken and sharp. Gather your materials. You will need some shells, a permanent marker , a tray or something else that will keep the shells contained. Write a pair of numbers (as 1 and One) on shells. Usually up to 10 in a good amount. Let the marker dry for a few minutes before playing. Arranged the shells face down in random order. Play. One player flips a shell and leaves it face up, then flips another. If they match, they leave them face up and the other player goes. If they do not match both

WELCOME TO BUILDER’S CORNER
H
i there, John and Liana Howarth from GBC Homes here. We will be contributing to the magazine each fortnight, with helpful information regarding new home builds and renovations, and hopefully answer many questions that you may have about building, through the articles and accompanying photos. Over the years, the face of Bribie Island has changed, from an island as a destination for a holiday home, to new families
moving into the area looking for a fresh, quieter lifestyle. Now those little shacks are being bought by those who wish to live in the beautiful surrounds, either to retire; or if younger, use it as a base to commute to work, on or off the island; or to raise their family in a safer environment, one of, or if not the best, coastal communities in South East Queensland. At some stage that little shack may be on the radar to be bowled over and a new home built, or have a partial or full renovation.
New additions to the family; in-laws moving in (potential detached granny flat under the house, or in the backyard); needing more space; wanting to work from home; time for a change in layout; extra outside living areas … the list goes on. If you find yourself in this situation and are seeking information on how to proceed, the best place to start is to talk with a professional who has years of experience in this type of work. Whether it’s a knockdown and rebuild, a
raise up and build under, or reconfiguring of your layout, we can help with design and drafting, certification and building approval (if needed), testimonies from previous satisfied clients (available on request), to all things pertaining to the build. BOATING, FISHING & ADVENTURES O
zFish Unlimited Pumicestone chapter representatives, Dr Ben Diggles and Elle Veary attended the February RSL Fishing Club meeting to provide a briefing on the work that OzFish has been undertaking in the local area. The presentation included an update on the results of the successful shellfish reef restoration project. Local anglers are already enjoying the benefits of the reef restoration area by way of locally increased fish diversity and abundance. At the meeting, OzFish was
presented with a cheque from the RSL fishing club in support of the ongoing work. Chapter President, Elle Veary noted, “The RSL Fishing Club recognises the importance of what we are trying to achieve and we are so grateful for their ongoing support”. Anglers are reminded that anchoring within 80m of the reef restoration yellow marker has the potential to damage the reefs and result in lost anchors. “We ask everyone to please help us to help restore fish habitat and only fish on the drift or use your spot lock if you have
an electric motor,” said Dr Diggles.
“

Blue Water Review Vist Friday 7th February 2020 - Keith Williams and Matthew Thompson who are now with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services working on the Blue Water review dropped into the base today. VMR Radio Officer John Bodycombe took the opportunity to talk to them about the new radio systems that VMR Bribie are currently looking at after being successful with a recent grant. Matthew has had extensive experience with Marine Rescue NSW and the Radio systems there. There were a number of other general items discussed. Also, present, were Commodore Liz Radajewski, Committee members Graham Gibb, Allan Tranter, Peter McNamara and VMR Coxswain Simon Middap. Monday 10th February 2020 - VMR Bribie Commodore Liz Radajewski caught up with Peter Naven, one of the many volunteers that give their time to help run the squadron. Commodore Liz presented Peter with a Commodore’s Award for his outstanding efforts in maintaining the base’s lawns and gardens. The Commodore has been trying to catch up with Peter for some time, but he has been too quick on the base’s ride on mower. Peter has also been on Crew and a Radio Operator, but now is happy to help out by keeping our lawns and gardens under control and has been paid many compliments for his efforts by those who walk past the base. Liz also presented Peter with his Queensland Emergency Services Volunteer medallion. From all your fellow VMR Bribie Volunteers a big “Thanks Pete”.
Recently the Commodore Liz Radajewski and Vice Commodore Ces Luscombe dropped in to The Sandstone Point Hotel to say thanks to Paul Comiskey and his the team for their ongoing support. During the course of 2019 they donated $25,000 to VMR Bribie for helping out with parking at some events which helped with much needed fund raising to support the ongoing operational and maintenance costs of the Squadron. Commodore Liz Radajewski said “’We are very fortunate at VMR Bribie to have great community and local business support and we try and visit everyone to say a “Big Thank You”.

Safety Dave The Frenchie wants to remind you when
you are out in the sun to ALWAYS apply sunscreen, did you know that being around water can increase sunburn potential since there is exposure from both direct exposure and reflection off the water. Applying sunscreen can be the critical factor that prevents a sunburn. It must be made sure that the sun screen covers all exposed skin and is reapplied when needed. Our crews always have access at the base or on a vessel to sunscreen and are encouraged to use it every time they go out. “BUT importantly – Always remember if you are heading out on the water LOG ON with your local VMR or Coast Guard, its a free service for everyone, so why wouldn’t you! - It just may save your life!”

ow, what a great start to February we have had for the dams, the forests, the animals and of course the fish and the sea creatures. With great falls from the wide bay Burnett area to as far south as Sydney/ Wollongong, some areas locally recording over 500mm in the first 16 days of February. It’s great to see some nice solid rain falling on the whole east coast. With all the muchneeded rains, it has meant the local rivers, creeks and dams have all had a good flush out. The rains
have also provided muchneeded water, to help the new growth to the areas that were burnt in the last few months horrific bush fires. As the rainwater subsides, and the clean ocean waters pushback up into the estuary’s, that’ll help the next few months fishing, crabbing and will also help the overall health and well-being of the wildlife in our area. This time of the year is perfect for mud crabbing, and with all the freshwater about has meant it gets that little bit easier to get a feed. By using good quality pro pots, fresh baits and

a good soak, just about anywhere should see you get a few nice crabs. A lot of the big rusty bucks will be on the move back up the mangrove creeks to their holes. Out in the bay, the sand crabs are also around, the same story as the muddies. Good pots, fresh baits and a good soak. The banana prawns were running hard just before the rains in the Caboolture and Pine River, but now will be flushed back out into the bay for another couple of weeks. This rainfall will definitely help the prawning over the next month or so.

Caitlin O’Meara and her mother Debby and father Danny, all from Bribie Island, have been given the opportunity to tick off the bucket list whilst contributing to the Big Red Bash’s $100,000 donation for bush fire relief. “We are super stoked! It means a lot to us to be going, as last year we missed out due to family reasons. When we were chosen out of the 25 ticket holders, we knew we were meant to be there. We are also grateful to be able to support those who have
suffered in the Bush Fires. I have a good mate who lives in Birdsville, so this will be my third time there, and I am super excited,” said Caitlin O’Meara. The event has been soldout since October last year, however organisers made room for 25 more families or couples, and as a result were able to sell 25 Big Red Bash Bushfire Support family packages with 100% of the proceeds being donated to the Bushfire Crisis. The additional 25 packages were sold on January 15 priced at $2,000, which is higher than family tickets

Big Red Bash has also added to the $50,000 the sale of these tickets has raised by matching the funds dollar for dollar with an additional $50,000 donation to take the total donation to $100,000. This donation has already been made by the Big Red Bash to the Red Cross and The Salvation Army Bushfire Appeals. Of the additional fundraising effort Big Red Bash Founder and Organiser, Greg Donovan said, “Like everyone in Australia we have been shocked, devastated and saddened by the scale of the Bushfire crisis, and the impact it has had on the lives of so many people and communities. Each July the Big Red Bash brings people together from nearly every town and community across every state of Australia. As a result many of our past patrons and volunteers have been impacted by the bushfires as have many of those who are planning to attend or volunteer this year. Many of our crew are also in impacted communities, and have been involved in various roles at the frontline of the crisis.”

“This is a time to do what Australians do best and pull together to support each other during a crisis when so many are hurting. It’s important that we show our support, and we feel fortunate to be able help in this small way,” added Donovan. The iconic three-day Big Red Bash music festival will see 10,000 intrepid travellers and music-lovers flock to the striking red sands of Big Red for a jam-packed program of live Australian music, Outback activities and charity initiatives for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). Now in its sixth year, the festival has grown to become officially Outback Australia’s biggest event, generating $11 million in annual revenue for Outback Queensland, and annually in excess of $70,000 for the RFDS. 2020 will see the biggest ever line-up of iconic Aussie rock acts take to the stage when Paul Kelly and a slew of Oz music legends hit Outback Queensland’s Simpson Desert. Headliner Paul Kelly will be joined by a festival-record 19 Australian music greats, including Tim Finn, John Williamson, Kate Ceberano, Ian Moss, Shannon Noll, Dragon, The Radiators, Mi Sex, Wendy Matthews, Thirsty Merc, Marc Gable, Glenn Shorrock, Caitlin Shadbolt and more.

o you remember back when you were young and went on your camping trips with family and friends? I know I certainly do! I look back at them with a lot of fond memories. Wondering what that noise was outside, will it eat me? How many bugs am I going to swallow in my sleep? How does this bucket flush? But on a serious note, it was some of the best times of my life. Did you also realise that there is a lot of health benefits to camping as well? Here are

just a few of them.
As a parent, the first benefit is you can unplug from the world. No computer games, phones or iPad. Oh the bliss of just hearing natures sounds not a constant buzz of technology. The stress levels go down and a sense of calm prevails. It is also a team building exercise. If you can survive setting up the camp, then you can look forward to stories by the campfire, looking up into the stars, sleeping in close proximity of each other
and eating a meal that you can cook together. Then after dinner, smores (biscuits with marshmallow and chocolate in the middle, melted in the fire) and toasting marshmallows. This would have to be one of my favourite things about camping! Exercise is also a big factor. Why not explore your surroundings. Go on a bushwalk, swim in natures water, not your backyard pool, maybe a game of cricket, climb some trees, the possibilities are endless. This gets the endorphins going
which in turn puts you in a better mood. But best of all, it is about getting away from your routine of everyday life, you have no choice but to slow down, take in your surroundings and simply breathe in the fresh air. This gives you the chance to reconnect with your loved ones, no distractions, just quality time spent together. Give your kids the memories they too can look back on, and in turn, make some new ones for yourself.

hough few people will stay up to count down the clock, the Astrological New Year arrives with the Equinox in March. And this time, even Old Father Time (Saturn) gets excited. As the planet of steady work, discipline and achievement enters its traditional Aquarian home of ingenuity and progress, we’ll need to take our collective future more seriously and focus on what we need to do to move forward. Fortunately, Mars’ involvement with Jupiter and Pluto suggests we can all secretly have fun too!

It’s not always easy to understand the effect a person or a situation is having on us. We tend to absorb any difficulties, and carry on as best as we can. It’s only with hindsight that we realise how much we’ve been affected. March brings you the chance to reimagine an aspect of your life where you feel stuck in a situation that has become untenable. The Equinox brings a ‘eureka’ moment of clarity and inspiration which shows you what you need to do, and gives you the impetus to do it. MARCH brings great potential for change. Call 1300 017 319.

Unaware of the problem, it’s easy for us to head off in completely the wrong direction. This month, double-check on the direction you’re heading towards. Keep your goal in sight. If you’re in doubt about recent choices, the Equinox brings the confidence you need to be certain. Inspiring times await you in MARCH. Call your NEW forecast: 1300 017 319.

Confusing and complicated? Yes! But you have much to gain by following a similar process this month.MARCH brings a rare cosmic opportunity for change. Call 1300 017 319.
we take, every thought we have and every feeling we experience is an affirmation of the incredible gift of life. In fact, every single second, no matter the mood we’re in, is a gift. Yet we’re all so caught up in the details that we overlook this universal truth. Rather than valuing and enjoying ourselves, we focus on the more difficult aspects and worry about what the future holds. Yet even challenges are gifts. If you can see them like this in March, you’ll find easy ways around them. Don’t miss your inspiring in-depth forecast for MARCH. Call 1300 017 319.
is ‘the mother of invention’, inspiration gets my vote for being its father. Truly creative acts need both of these to be present. Unless there’s a spark of inspiration, an invention runs the risk of turning into a convention. March brings an exciting idea which is so dazzling in its brilliance that you’re going to need to muster all your courage to act on it. Yet it holds the potential to transform an area of your life that has long needed to change. You have the celestial support you need. Your in-depth forecast for MARCH is ready. Call 1300 017 319.

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23)
SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22)
It’s easy to find fault with everything and everyone. Not only that, but we have to find ways to live with our own ‘inner critic’, who loves ripping our creative ideas to pieces before we’ve even had a chance to bring them into being. You know all about perfection; but although having high standards is all well and good, it’s not healthy (or fun) to seek it in places where it can’t be found. In March, accepting what’s ‘not perfect’ will lead to greater appreciation of the good things that really are happening. Discover why MARCH has so many opportunities. Explanations are all well and good, but they don’t always get to the root of the problem. Even when we reach new understanding about something fundamental, it often just raises more questions. Although March finds you caught in the midst of a confusing situation, the Equinox brings new information your way. Yet, a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. Be persistent. Keep asking questions until you’re satisfied that the answers really do make sense. Then, you’ll be on to a winning formula. There is inspiring news in your in-depth MARCH forecast. What would you like to focus on in March? The long list of things you don’t feel able to achieve? Or the opportunities that lie before you? It’s obvious really; why would anyone waste their energy on negative thoughts and activities? Yet, life isn’t as simple as we’d like it to be and you’re dealing with a series of challenging issues, which are understandably infuriating. Still, you have choice. If you choose to make the most of what’s good in your world, you can achieve great things this month. Your in-depth forecast for the whole of MARCH can really help. Call 1300 017 319.
LAUGH RIOT A boy asks his father, “Dad, are bugs good to eat?” “That’s disgusting. Don’t talk about things like that over dinner,” the dad replies. After dinner the father asks, “Now, son, what did you want to ask me?” “Oh, nothing,” the boy says. “There was a bug in your soup, but now it’s gone.” Q: Why did the witches’ team lose the baseball game? A: Their bats flew away. There was an elderly couple who in their old age noticed that they were getting a lot more forgetful, so they decided to go to the doctor. The doctor told them that they should start writing things down, so they don’t forget. They went home and the old lady told her
husband to get her a bowl of ice cream. “You might want to write it down,” she said. The husband said, “No, I can remember that you want a bowl of ice cream.” She then told her husband she wanted a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream. “Write it down,” she told him, and again he said, “No, no, I can remember you want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream.” Then the old lady said she wants a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top. “Write it down,” she told her husband and again he said, “No, I got it. You want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top.” So, he goes to get the ice cream and spends an unusually long time in the kitchen, over 30 minutes. He comes out to his wife and hands her a plate of eggs and bacon.
The old wife stares at the plate for a moment, then looks at her husband and asks, “Where’s the toast?” Dad: “Can I see your report card, son?” Son: “I don’t have it.” Dad: “Why?” Son: “I gave it to my friend. He wanted to scare his parents.” Son: “Dad, there is someone at the door to collect donations for a community swimming pool.” Father: “Okay, give him a glass of water.”
RAYS RANT This week in the courier mail, a so-called champagne expert, tested and tasted a glass of new champagne. he described it as............
“A blinding flash of white sunshine, of lemon freshness and white pepper, layered with molten wax, even glimpses of green olives” he goes on further to disclose.............. “And a grand malic acidity of dizzying proportions swept up in an immense, all-consuming tidal wave of frothing, sea salt minerality crashing with such force that any mortal wine would collapse breathless in its wake” Well, as one of Hillary Clinton's incorrigible's-- I thought........... “Why can’t I report on a beverage ?????” So, I went to my fridge and removed a beer....... I decanted it into a mug.................... GUESS WHAT?????? It tasted just like................. BEER!!!!!!!! PS. JUST LET IT RAIN
They are tangerine green red and grey These are the gum leaves lying on the pathway The meandering creek in the Woorim Park Just breaming over and creating a spark Plants and trees grass and flowers Bending and swaying while I watch for hours Pathways covered in seeds and sticks Watch out joggers and bicycle trips I have just walked the track from the Memorial Gardens Rain drops hang heavily from the tree canopy flowers It is mystical and damp water dew drops from the canopy camp Locals are scarce sitting inside The wet weather just makes them hide I cross the road and head to the point Wild waves crash and begin to anoint The wet sandy beach and the loss of the dunes
Natures is powerful you can get caught in the cocoon A lone surfer out on his board I scan the horizon no ships just forlorn I worry about the surfer out there on his own Bull sharks love this weather he thinks he is alone The dirty water that gets flushed from the creeks Sticks logs and mud on your feet I check out the water just before I go To make sure that the surfer will be there tomorrow The turtles have bee hatching The beach is a mess high tide and wind swept But the colours of the landscape are soft and subdued Peaceful and lonesome the sky is steel blue The clouds are building the raindrops intense Down comes the rain and it is not finished yet Suddenly the rain stops and there is a croak of a frog Yellow butterflies and birds flying along
Landing on leaves and the branches are wet No time to wait for butterflies are set To complete their life in a short space of time Rain or high water it is just a crime That all this goes on and people do not see That nature is busier then you or me The wallaby that lives in the dunes by the sea Leaves a message an imprint just for me The tail and claw marks where he sits in the sand Eating fresh grass when he can The creek is full and has burst its banks It was a tiny hole once with nothing left in its tank What a difference this rain makes It is a gift from the sky Governments should harness it Then we would never run dry So just let it rain day and night For the landscape is beautiful such a magic sight Written by Sharmayne Kurtz 13.2.20

YOUR SAY
Letters Dear Editor,
Bill Hinte, in his article on Electricity and Climate Change, seems to have fallen for some of the myths put about by the Climate Denial industry. Regarding the “CO2 is plant food” argument, a couple of points can be made. Firstly, the “more is better” philosophy doesn’t really work in the real world. The old saying about “Too much of a good thing” comes to mind – as we know, if taking one pill is good for you, it doesn’t mean that taking four is four times better. Sure, more CO2 can provide a short-term benefit, but unless it’s accompanied by more water, more nitrogen and more of all the other things needed for growth, any positive effects quickly disappear. And unfortunately, crops like wheat have less nutrition value when grown in higher CO2 conditions, and are also more vulnerable to insect attack, thanks to changes in their biochemistry brought about by too much CO2. It is also absolutely incorrect to say that there has been no warming over the last decade or so. The world’s five warmest years have all occurred since 2015, and nine of the ten warmest years have occurred since 2005 – the melting glaciers and ice caps are a clue if scientific records aren’t sufficient evidence for your readers. There can be no genuine doubt
that climate change is caused mainly by CO2 generated by humans. But it’s wrong to say that a volcanic eruption could undo any of our reduction efforts. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the world’s volcanoes generate about two hundred million tons of CO2 annually, compared to twenty-four billion tons from human activities. However, I’m in full agreement with Mr Hinte regarding the effects of land clearing – what has been done in the Amazon, in Indonesia and many other equatorial countries, as well as right here in Queensland, is nothing short of criminal. Regards Diana Grey, Bribie.
was reached. The wildly inaccurate doom and gloom forecasts of the climate brigade go on and on. In 1955 a press release quoting finding of a University of Queensland “global warming” study predicted that the year 2000, Gold Coast waterfront homes would be 4 – 5 cms, or about 2 inches underwater as a result of the rising seas. Today: 25 years later, not a single Gold Coast waterfront home has gone under. Within the last couple of years, North America and parts of Europe experienced their most severe freezes in 50 years. For once the normally vocal climate change lot was noticeably silent. For centuries the world has endured periods of deep freezes and extreme heat and this will no doubt continue in the future. This is a natural phenomenon, certainly not something caused by humans. By Charles Taylor - Bribie Island.
Dear Editor, What a load of garbage these climate change activists try to feed the world. In the last issue of the Bribie Islander, Diana Grey quoted a litany of false statements; I will only correct a few, as time and space would prohibit my covering them all.
Dear Editor,
Firstly, Ms Grey quotes last year was our hottest year ever. Meteorological records kept since the early 1800s say otherwise. There are several years in the early 1800’s hotter with temperatures in many places, not falling below 103 degrees Fahrenheit, even at midnight. The hottest day ever in this country was recorded in 1828 when 53.9 degrees Celsius
Firstly, congratulations on a

great magazine. A good balance of features for both locals and visitors. Some lifestyle articles, some good history lessons, plus good coverage of dining and entertainment. It also appears that the local advertisers are supporting you, and hopefully that will help ensure future editions roll off the press. Secondly, I would like to particularly mention the excellent feature by Bill Hinte, pages 70 & 71 “ Electrical Energy & Climate Change” This is written in simple English, solid construction of a common sense paragraph leading into another set of clearly comprehensible sentences. Bill’s line of argument seems sound, the content all tied together nicely. This is one of the best articles that I have read on this subject. Yes, I’m with you, Bill, “we do contribute, but nowhere near are what the doomsayer’s spruiking at this time” Would you please pass on my thanks to Bill Hinte. Keep up the good work, Regards Ken - Mooloolaba 4557

THEFT... HELP PLEASE
I am wondering if any of our neighbours have any helpful information regarding the theft at our home on Marina Blvd, this month, while we were travelling overseas. Did anyone see any suspicious activity along the street or canal, possibly the night of Fri 7th of Feb? Along with many personal items, a locked and bolted safe was removed from our home, including jewellery, watches, and many irreplaceable family heirlooms. We are simply devastated
Public order: One person charged with stealing, public nuisance and contravene a police direction. One person charged with stealing and contravening an order, and obstructing police. One person charged with public nuisance in the vicinity of a licensed premises, obstruct police and failure to leave a licensed premises. Traffic Offences: One person charged with driving on a disqualified license. One person charged with driving on a SPER suspended license
by this loss and invasion of privacy in a place we have always felt so safe. At the very least, this may remind the community to stay alert and report anything suspicious. I have contacted many people but until this happens to you, you have no idea how it will affect your sense of security and trust of others around you. Please be vigilant and look out for each other to keep Bribie Island the sanctuary that it is. Thank you, M. Voss
