What a couple of weeks it has been! The world has been inflicted by the Coronavirus which in turn has sent everybody into a mad shopping frenzy of toilet paper. I am a little disturbed by this, as my understanding of the virus was it had cold and flu symptoms, which would involve tissues not toilet paper? I have not been able to buy any toilet paper for the past week or so, and even if I could I would be embarrassed to put it in my shopping trolley in case anyone thought I was a mad hoarder!!!

design.thebribieislander@gmail.com

I just hope we get over this craziness sooner rather than later, it really has been a tad silly when people are getting in brawls over toilet paper. And also the media reporting that basic hand-washing and personal hygiene are highly important to help keep yourself protected from the virus. MMM, is this not what you should be doing everyday anyway? It is a bit concerning when people only think this is important when there

HEALTH, WELLBEING & COMMUNITY “It will be the same as previous years, we don’t ask for an entry fee but encourage participants to buy a few raffle tickets along the way and join in the raffles and auctions at the last stop,” Blakey said. “The Ride for Red is to commemorate a dear departed mate and the ride adds to treasured memories and also funds to help combat brain cancer.”

GET ON YOUR BIKE FOR CANCER

In 2019, the Ride for Red saw 43 bikes and numerous cars accompanied by approximately 100 people. After a 250km

ride and braving the rain, through raffles and online donations a total of $7021 was raised. Organisers Gary Blake (Blakey) and Helen Weir were more than pleased to exceed their goal of $6000. Since starting in 2017, they have passed onto Cancer

Council Queensland in the vicinity of over $15000 and are aiming to forward another donation to them this year. The Fourth Annual Ride for Red will be held on the 2nd of May with the briefing at 8:30 am with stands up at 9:00 am

Stanko and Sofija’s 60th Wedding Anniversary:

Island Times

By Jelena Nikolic

BRIBIE ANIMAL WELFARE BIDS FAREWELL TO JUDY BREITENEDER June Breiteneder recently retired after managing the Caboolture and District Animal Welfare Inc. pre-loved shop on Bribie Island for 19 years. June who is a very keen

animal lover would go to the shop very early each day and make preparations for the day’s trading before oncoming volunteers staff the shop 7 days per week. June is succeeded by Margaret Tripp who has taken over the helm at the shop and displays the same passion as June for animals and operating a retail shop to support the activities of the Association. June is already missed at the shop with many regulars wondering where she has gone. After such a long time June felt it was time to relax a little more but will still find time to help out with some shop activities. June is also Vice-President of the Association and has been on the management committee

for a long time. Alan Farrell, President of Caboolture and District Animal Welfare Inc. wished June a happy retirement and thanked her for the many years she has given as Shop Manager. Caboolture and District Animal Welfare Inc. is operated by all volunteers who share the passion for rehoming domestic cats and dogs. The Association also operates a subsidised cat and dog de-sexing program which is offered to pensioners. Caboolture and District Animal Welfare Inc. is also celebrating its 30th year this year with some celebrations planned for later in the year.

CADAWI began as the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and had a name change to the present name in 2005.

On Sunday 1st March 2020, my Grandparents, Stanko and Sofija Ivaneza celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with their closest family: 3 children and partners, 7 grandchildren and partners, and 2 greatgrandchildren. Stanko and Sofija both grew up in former Yugoslavia and

were only as young as their great-grand-children when they survived through World War 2. They met in the late 50s and married overseas in 1960, having 2 children by 1963, migrating to Brisbane, Australia in 1970 when they had their 3rd child. Stanko worked for the Brisbane City Council and Sofija for the Queensland Government for many years, both receiving awards for their long contribution to the public service. They retired to Bribie Island approximately 15 years ago as they always loved living by the coastline

and enjoyed the serenity, friendships and family that is Bribie Island. As one of their granddaughters, I’m grateful for their decision to migrate to Australia where I was born and where I have grown up, married and had my children. Congratulations to Stanko and Sofija, your passion, love and dedication is something we all look up to and strive to achieve! Thank you to Bribie Island RSL Club for your hospitality and wonderful service during our family lunch!

CADAWI rehome approximately 180 animals each year via an in-home foster care system. Foster carers are provided with all the food, vet care and items necessary to ensure the animals are rehomed once they are DE sexed, microchipped and vaccinated. Anyone wanting to help out can phone Deb on 0455 778 166. The pre-loved/Op Shops are at 2/3 King St, Caboolture or 1/60 Hornsby Rd, Bongaree in the main Woolworths complex and opposite the BP service station.

Low or No Alcohol Wines FOOD, WINE & ISLAND TIMES

of years.

T

I

n recent editions of The Bribie Islander Magazine, we have covered the growth of organic wines which although looks impressive only comes from a very small base. There is another segment which is also continuing to grow but has been around since the making of wine began and that is low alcohol wines and no-alcohol wines.

B

ecause of our warmer climate here in Australia and all the Southern Continents, the grapes always ripen with a higher sugar content which ferments to a higher alcohol content as each gram of sugar converts to 1% of alcohol depending on how sweet or dry the winemaker wants the wine to be. This has led to red wines having an alcohol content of between 13% and 15% and white wines around 12% to 13%. If the vines produce high-quality

grapes the resulting wines usually have strong aromas, big flavours and tend to cellar for a long time, the downside is that each bottle represents 8 standard glasses which is also not good for your health.

W

hen I say since time began in Europe most of the wines have always been made with lower alcohol of around 10%-12% due to cooler climates and when The New World wines became popular this encouraged many of them to get around the lower alcohol content by adding an amount of grape sugar before adding yeast which then increased the alcohol in the wine, this is called Chaptalizing something which is illegal here in Australia, although over the years several winemakers have been caught cheating. With the trend to lighter alcohol wines, all they have to do is go back to how they made wines for thousands

here have been several attempts to produce alcohol-free wines especially in the supermarkets, Ariel and Eden Vale are a couple, but I must be honest I have found them very sweet almost like drinking grape juice and the problem is that alcohol not only preserves wine it also enhances the aromas and flavours so when you reduce the alcohol a lot of the good things also disappear. However, because of health concerns, globally many winemakers are introducing lighter wines and also many of the new grape varieties from the cooler climates seem to cope better with this trend than our traditional varieties. Wines made from Vermentino, Viognier, Pinot Grigio and the Rose style all cope with lower alcohol better than the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and Shiraz grapes.

S

everal New Zealand producers Giesen, Villa Maria and Wither Hills produce lighter Sauvignon Blancs and are being backed by a 15million dollar government grant, the group have developed winemaking techniques that allow them to produce wines that are still full of flavour but naturally lower in alcohol, around 9%.

H

ere in Australia Casella who make the Yellow Tail label have released a Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Rose to the U.K. market all at 8.5% alcohol, perhaps if successful we shall see them here one day.

A

ustralian winemaking giant McGuigan Wines have just released through the Liquorland, First Choice outlets and Independent retailers an alcohol-free range called simply ZERO, in the varieties Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Rose, a Sparkling wine and a Shiraz using spinning cone technology, a method they claim to be the only winery with this in Australia and has been two years in the making. The Zero Sauvignon Blanc claims to have rich gooseberry and citrus aromas with a subtle grassy aroma. It is medium-bodied with notes of passionfruit and lime which one would expect to find on many Australian Sauvignon Blanc labels of this variety and it should be drunk very cold even with a couple of ice blocks, I found this wine worth a second visit.

T

he Rose doesn’t tell what grape varieties are in this wine but the label informs us that there are bright lifted aromas of delicate red fruits complimented with hints

FOOD, WINE & ISLAND TIMES of rose petals. The palate is generous with flavours of strawberries and pink grapefruit leading to a crisp and refreshing finish. I thought for a non-alcoholic wine this was actually pretty good and certainly, on a warm evening, it was very refreshing and lived up to the back label description, again serve icy cold.

A

gain the sparkling wine didn’t mention the grape varieties but described the wine being refreshing featuring crisp pear and green apples, lively bubbles and an attractive crisp finish. Again serve icy cold and you will certainly enjoy this wine.

U

nfortunately at this stage, the Liquorland outlets on the Island don’t seem to have found room for the Shiraz but perhaps

by the time this article is out they may be stocking it. I found a bottle of the Shiraz at First Choice Morayfield and after being quite impressed with the plummy aromas felt let down with the flavour which seemed to me very disappointing however it may be worth trying if you are looking for a healthy alternative.

I

was also impressed that the wine is bottled in premium wine bottles which lead me to think McGuigan are going to pursue this market and at this moment are at the forefront of an exciting new development in wine production.

W

hilst these wines certainly don’t have the punch of the alcoholic varieties they are certainly a massive step up from the supermarket wines, if you

mentioned several issues ago that the bushfires could have an impact on the grapes with smoke taint and if you enjoy wines from The Adelaide Hills where more than 60 wineries have been affected, Victoria and The Hunter Valley in N.S.W. where Tyrell’s have up to 80% of their vines affected you should buy up now. Higher prices are forecast but this may open the doors for imported wines, we shall see, The U.S.A. has forecast a massive oversupply of grapes this vintage, leading to cheaper wines which will affect our exports over there

HOME Swapping

Part 1

By Elaine Lutton

“HAVE YOU BEEN OVERSEAS AGAIN?” ASK OUR FRIENDS ENVIOUSLY. “WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN THIS TIME?” “HOW CAN YOU AFFORD THREE MONTHS AWAY?”

No, we are not millionaires, but like many retirees we have gone some way to solve the dilemma of being time rich, money not exactly poor, but vastly insufficient to put us in the jet-setting class. We have discovered the joys of Home-swapping! The theory is simple: You live in Brisbane and want to go to the UK during September/November.

You need to find someone in the UK who wishes to visit Brisbane around the same time. You then swap homes. You live in their home and they live in yours, often using each other’s cars. As well as overseas swaps you can arrange to exchange within your own country, useful for visiting adult children and grandchildren. In order to find your perfect match, you enlist the help of a kind of Introductory Agency, one of the many Home Swap Organisations. To find them simply put Home Swap into your Google Search Engine and you will find several organisations. Having paid your money and signed up you then vet the possible exchanges yourself.

It pays to be flexible. Remember Spring can be just as lovely as Autumn, perhaps Cornwall is unavailable at the right time but consider Yorkshire. Don’t shillyshally; most people want to feel that plans are secure and most important of all, having made an agreement, don’t renege unless there are compelling reasons such as serious health problems. The first home swap you do you can be excused for being nervous, but once in you will find the water is lovely! Most common worries are centred on security. Will your new friends wear masks or balaclavas and make off with all your prized

possessions? If really concerned, you can get friends to call around and count teaspoons but I assure you it is not really necessary….in fact, if you are into teaspoon counting perhaps home swap is not for you. Accidents can sometimes happen, so if Grandma’s vase is irreplaceable, maybe give it to a friend for safekeeping for the duration of your holiday. It is also permissible to request that the contents of the display cabinet are not to be used during their stay. Another common worry is that somehow or other your home is not grand enough for the folk offering you their castle. Ask yourself, which you would

rather stay in? A clean and tidy modest home or one requiring the up-keep of acres of dove-grey carpet. You are on holiday for Heaven’s sake! The one mansion we exchanged with, we lived in the kitchen anyway, being far too nervous to enter any other rooms besides those of a strictly utilitarian nature. It is usual to leave your new friends a potted guide to your home. This is well worth some time and thought. We have had so many problems with English showers that we always ask for instructions as to how to turn them on. I believe they are devised as a fiendish form of I.Q. test which Don and I were doomed to fail. Explain in detail how your air-conditioning works and hope they have revealed the mysteries of English

“Greetings

one and all, dearest and fair, mighty and little, Island-folk”.

Honesty compels me to

come clean and confess my - unpatriotic to the last article – behaviour. Help, help! For I have succumbed to the pressure of summer heat and have not only been sitting in the lap of luxury but indulging in its whole being; many hours per day have I

been immovable from the A/C. All this talk last time of being planet-conscious and here I am daily enjoying the pleasure of man-made coolair. Maybe I’ll make up for it by not using the heater in winter…Anyway, I’ve forgotten what I was going to talk with you about. Hmm, Oh yes, The Illusion of Away. One thing I will carry on from our last chat is the concept of being resourceful. There’s a long way ahead of

me until I become an expert on the topic, but I have my ideas and that’s why we are here. So thank you, kind local-news reader, for giving me a second shot. Think about this: We seem to be inundated by media and general talk that persuades us to chase fulfilment in far-away places. People goggle at success, travel and status, with the pinnacles of such mountains always in the distance and never on our doorstep. Why are these things dangled in front of us like they’re so desirable? I can just hear some of our

little subconsciousness in annoying mosquito-like voices, “Because power, popularity and overseas holidays are desirable”. Aha-ha, yes, maybe, or maybe it is the illusion that’s desirable. Are our lives that stressful and/or unfulfilling in the present that happiness is always in the future or on another continent? Something about the push, strive, the unsatisfied culture we live is disturbing and - as I hinted toward in the last let-

ter to you all - is controlled by the ‘powers that be’. That is, controlled via two effective methods: slavery and seduction. These methods hustle people into the need for lavish escapes through stress-driven work as well as seduce us into trying to make incarnate a marketed fantasy-life. The problem with this control is that it is forever dangling the bait in front of us and just as we seem to reach the prize, it is moved along, yet again being out of our grasp. What diligent, little creatures we are. If only we all worked for

a good boss. Well my dear co-working community members, I’m here to say that living free from control is possible! We are at an interesting time in earth’s history where, once we break-away from the platforms of mind-control, we can choose joy in a free, unstructured way unique to our personalities. Satisfaction, then, will no longer be dictated by destructive external-powers but peaceful internal-transformation.

Life is not a box. It doesn’t come from a box and it doesn’t put you in a box. True life is complete freedom and freedom is recognizing that life has not been running from you, but perusing you! Life was surrounding you all along, yet it was you that hadn’t taken hold of it yet. Never too late is it, my dears, to stop and become resourceful. Look around at what life has already placed inside your hands and in your heart. The very word resourceful is wonderful. The prefix‘re’ means to go back to, ‘source’ is where someone or something originated and ‘-ful’ is something being filled. Couldn’t that mean: go back to where something originated from and be filled with it. And because the resource has positive life-giving connotations, you could even say: go back to the simple, original, good things of life and be filled with them. From there, you will have an abundance to keep going, keep giving, all the while, being satisfied. Moreover, if you’re rich in those simple things, then you’re as rich as you could ever be. You’d be surprised what treasures already lay in your room, your home, your street, your neighbourhood and your community. These treasures can give you what you need to go and be your ultimate self in the world! Best of all, you’d be surprised what treasures already lay up in your heart. I do like these topic Islanders, what do you say we keep going in the same direction next chat? Much Love, Nikita

shleigh Brilliant originated a series of postcards in the sixties where he made such pungent observations as: ‘Living on earth may be expensive but it includes an annual free trip around the

sun’, and ‘Please don’t tell me to relax – it’s only my tension that’s holding me together’. Or how about: ‘Inside every older person a younger person is wondering what happened’? Ageing is a challenge. And no one tells you that your bits age at different rates. When I started out, everything worked well. I was a homogeneously well -proportioned Pediatrics unit, with the requisite working parts. As a baby, I recall looking in the mirror and thinking, “Hmm. Looking good. Great skin, baby. And those peepers. Not bad.” Back then, I had flexibility

you wouldn’t believe. I could put my toes in my mouth, no sweat. My digestive system was a dream too. I consumed with ease and minimal consequences whatever was put in front of me. Cognitively too, I was

perfection. In just a few short years I learned to perambulate around my world, make conversation using complex language codes. As time went on, I mastered a second language and myriad other skills too like playing the guitar, driving a car and changing a light bulb. Then in my forties something odd happened. Parts of me started behaving strangely, totally counter to their specifications. My skin started to grow protuberances (barnacles according to my dermatologist) which needed to be examined and sometimes removed. My outer covering now looks like the grubby sampler of

a rather careless and inept seamstress. My eyes started to let me down too. I once drove around for a week with what I thought was a chamois on the dashboard of the car. Imagine my surprise on donning my spectacles to find it was a pair of knickers. Don’t ask. Friends talk about health and we all trade notes on ‘my optometrist’, ‘my dermatologist’, ‘my physiotherapist’. Sigh. Life

is never straightforward is it? But the older I get, the more I appreciate that in most matters, things are not simply black and white. There are shades of grey. Which brings me to my crowning glory. I long ago accepted that my hair is no longer the mousy

brown of my youth. Nor am I the carefree blonde I impersonated (with the help of ‘my hairdresser’ and bleach) for years. Now it’s time to surrender to the passing of the years. Shock. Horror. I’ve stopped dying my hair and – gasp – the natural grey has taken root so to speak. Hey! My grey hair is part of me. So just accept it, people. Who am I kidding? I have to accept it. In summary, my hair is

grey. My skin is dodgy. My wrinkles arrive daily. But I have great legs (if I do say so myself) and all my own teeth. I love to swim, ride my bike and I can still sing up a storm. According to Ashleigh Brilliant, “I may not be totally perfect but parts of me are excellent.”

as being co-writer for 1963 THE GREAT ESCAPE with Steve McQueen. As director it is clearly the exercise of power which traps James. “It’s certainly not material success,” he agrees. “After a very small threshold, once you have your drop-dead money, wealth is just a point of view.”

Each novel is an instant best seller and all, in the 70s and 80s, will be released globally as movies or TV series with a 120 million audience. But I find James arrogant, condescending,

dismissive, and yes, in fact, quite rude. And interviewing him is as fruitful as trying to penetrate the skin of an armadillo. Two years later, the LONDON OBSERVER also ask me to interview James in London, and this time I am prepared to retaliate. But instead, James’ welcome, friendliness and courtesy leave me both speechless and angry.

The Bribie Islander

“Why are you so nice to me today, when you treated me abominably in Austria last time we met?” I blurt out indignantly. James pauses, shrugs his shoulders, and, with a guilty smile, his brash, but honest reply makes me laugh. “You’re the Observer now!” And so a curious friendship develops with a most inspirational and superb writer, but

But in 1971 we are sitting in a small London office, cluttered to the ceiling with files, books, parcels, papers and posters. James has just finished his latest production with all offices, administrative staff and paper work completed, but is tidying up the last remnants himself, as he explains. “You pull in your tentacles from five offices and I’m now running my empire from behind this miserable curtain. It drives me barmy. Instead of being able to go dream a bit, I’m doing the work of a 20-pounds-week clerk and am trying to be a businessman, which I’m not.” Although he now owns homes in L.A., Vancouver and London, 50-year-old James insists there is no time to live in any of them, as he is always on location. And I am not the only person finding this Australian born, half-Irish

with Scottish overtones Englishman with American citizenship, difficult. James likes being the boss and he is

around a bit. It’s a great reputation. I’m not really trying to be the favourite man in the business. What I am concerned about is getting the best out of people.” But does he?? As screen writer and director, he certainly achieves this in the 1967 TO SIR WITH LOVE, starring Sidney Poitier, Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracey, as well

not the most loved man in the film industry. On film sets you can feel the tension between James, his actors and his crew. To the charges of being cold, hard, ruthless and ready to kill, he responds to me with glee. “I’d like to spread that

I have known has been in my novels. If you write the truth, you’re fulfilling your function. But my truth is not necessarily yours.”

Longish, greyish hair falls over James’ ears, as the genius bends forward on his desk and having made his point with relish, he straightens up, his strange blue eyes narrowing, and he drops a clenched fist on the desk. You are suddenly conscious of the former Captain in the Royal Artillery, as he was in World War II, captured in 1942 by the Japanese in Java and incarcerated in the infamous Changi Prison in Singapore, where only 1 prisoner in 15 survived – the setting of his first novel, KING RAT. But in 1971 the real challenge for James, who will succumb to cancer in 1994, is the actual writing not the directing. “I’m a soul stealer, a story-teller. I wanted to be a director because a director is a writer in the film form. The director is the story-teller. But it’s time for another book now - some real work. It means cutting myself off completely from what I’m doing. I’ve told everybody. Eventually they’ll believe me. “Writing is the hardest work I know and it stretches me the most. The greatest satisfaction

Over the years, the AFA conducted Fishing Competitions in the waters around Bribie, often involving hundreds of people being towed out in boats to a designated fishing area.

The Brisbane Tug & Steamship Co. opened up Bribie island to day-trippers and holidaymakers, when they leased land, built a jetty, and ran large steamships from Brisbane to Bribie from 1912. The first President of the Bowls Club was Alf Johnson and the Bowling Greens were subsequently named for prominent members including Campbell, Bell, Cressy, Loi and Pettitt. In the 1930’s Tennis had become a very popular sport for all family members, and Tennis Courts were constructed at on the south end of the Bowling greens. Early Members of the Bribie Island Bowls Club were largely non-residents, who came by Steamship from Brisbane at weekends and holidays. In 1947 a Bowlers Hostel

Initially, funds would only allow the building of two sides and a rear wall, and it was finally completed and enclosed in 1979. Over the years, the Hall has seen many different groups use the Recreation Hall , and numerous functions, events and celebrations have been held there. Today it is used by Vietnam Vets and U3A where several more modern “Sports” such as Pickleball, Boule, and Burlesque on a Chair are played.

From earliest times, Bribie was known for its remarkable fishing. As early as 1908 a Fish Canning operation had been established at Bongaree, where the IGA Store stands today. lack Kites are seen very rarely on Bribie Island but are more common on the mainland around Caboolture. I have sometimes seen one flying between the Bribie Bridge and Ningi. They are a little smaller and darker than the Whistling Kites which are common on Bribie Island. They are one of Australia’s most common raptors and the most numerous of all raptors in the world. They are rather nondescript, medium-sized dark brown raptors which appear black from a distance. Eyes are brown and bills are black with a smudge of yellow near the nostrils. Males are around 50cm long while females are about 55 cm.

Wingspans are 1.2-1.5 m and they weigh 560-671 g. In-flight the wings with distinctive fingers at the tips glide and soar with occasional slow flaps. Forked tails are probably their most distinguishing feature which they twist from side to side while working the updrafts. This action makes them easy to identify in flight. When the air is calm wings are held flat while they glide at lower altitudes among the treetops. When perched they sit upright with folded wings reaching almost to the tips of their tails. They are often seen in groups of up to hundreds of birds but are sometimes solitary. Square-tailed Kites are similar in appearance but do not have the forked tail.

Preferred habitats are forested areas, mangroves, swamps, cattle yards, rubbish tips and around fires. They are more common in the north of Australia and inland areas and less common as you travel southwards. On a trip on the Bruce Highway to Cairns, you will see hundreds of Black Kites flying overhead, many searching for roadkill. They are also found in Europe, Asia and Africa. Much of their food is carrion and roadkill, insects especially grasshoppers, reptiles and small mammals. Fires are an attraction and as small creatures and insects try to escape the flames they are swooped upon by the hungry kites. During the

days when most cane farmers burnt off their crops before harvesting, there would be flocks of hundreds of kites swooping down with legs outstretched snatching at escaping prey and picking up the charred remains of animals unable to getaway. During grasshopper plagues, large flocks form and gorge on the prolific insects. No other raptor forms flocks such as these. They are opportunistic hunters and take what is available.

in trees and lined with grasses and available soft materials. Both birds perform ritual courting dances in the air by loud calling, grabbing of talons, with falling and somersaulting before nesting. Both parents build nests. Clutches of 2-3 speckled eggs are laid and the female incubates for about 35 days while the male provides her with food. When hatched the young are covered with grey down. Siblings are aggressive towards one another and the weaker ones are often killed. Parent birds are diligent in keeping their nests safe. After about 50 days the young will leave the nest to stand on nearby branches. After about 2 years they begin breeding themselves. Sometimes the nests of other birds such as crows are used. Lions come from any part of the social structure, can have any type of job {or even be retired}, hail from the city, town or country, believe in any creed, embrace multiculturalism and most of all, Lions will be people who really care about the community. They are invested in the community’s welfare, its health standards and its progress. They acknowledge the imperfections of the community, but don’t depend on the government to solve all the problems. Instead Lions believe that citizens including themselves, should join

Lions accept that as free citizens, they have an obligation to give of their time, labour and means to help those less fortunate and do it willingly. Lionism isn’t only for men. There are various types such as, all men clubs, all ladies and mixed clubs. There are also Leo clubs for young people and Lioness clubs for service-minded women who do not wish to join a Lions club. All clubs are open to people interested in serving others.

What an individual can do is limited, but joined together and motivated, people can move mountains. The combined efforts available from a Lions Club is greater than the energy of any individuals. Within the club many skills are available, additional types of assistance can be tapped into, wider needs can become known, larger projects tackled, and there is continuity year after year. Almost every community has a Lions Club and memberships are always welcome to those who care to join its members in service.

Unfortunately, there is way too many incredible works and projects that have been achieved by the Bribie lions to possibly fit everything in. We hope we have done their amazing service justice.

In the 1968 – 70 Lions Years, an investigation was commenced by the Redcliffe Peninsular Lions Club, into the possibility of chartering a Lions Club on Bribie Island. Active participants in the Redcliffe Peninsular Lions Club were Lion Reg Wright and Lion Noel Kropp. Bribie Island interested locals were Bluey Piva amongst other businessmen. Bluey had purchased the Blue Pacific Hotel on the island several years before and had previous experience in Lionism in Ayr and Home Hill. A survey of Island businesspeople revealed a lack of enough interest at the time, so the plan was

Where the Piva family for many decades played host for many a function run by the Lions Club. Through the ’60s and ’70s, the hotel became the community hub of Bribie Island and over the years with a keen eye for new members, Bluey was able to introduce 15 members to the club. On Friday nights and Saturdays, you will still find the Lions Club members running their raffles at the hotel where they still hold all of their meetings to this day.

HEARING TEST FOR PREP SCHOOL STUDENTS For nearly a decade the Bribie Island Lions have met the cost to get the prep school aged children from the Bribie Island Primary School hearing tested. Audiologist Ms Stephanie Morris from the UQ Health and Rehabilitation said “Hearing is very important for a child’s development in learning, language communication etc. As a lot of the problems are through middle ear infection, hearing is tested when a child is born and again before they start school. In 2019, 90 children were tested, 17 were found to have issues. This is obviously a much needed service.

Bribie Island Lions through their involvement with local citizens became aware of the need for a community centre and for a meal on wheels kitchen to provide a service to those senior citizens requiring it. Following an application to the Lands Dept on 8th April 1972 under Lion President Edwin Schrag, approximately 6 acres of land was made available by the State Government on the ocean side of the Island. This came to fruition on the 26th October of that year with five Lions members being appointed as trustees of the area. There were copious amounts of red tape to get through, but this didn’t deter the lions club.

They dug in and with a lot of hours volunteered by the Lions Members raising funds, along with others the project was finally finished, and the Golden Age Community Centre became a reality. Throughout the years proving it is still just as valuable of an asset to

CAMP QUALITY On Sunday the 16th of December 1990 members for the Bribie Island Lions Club Kerry Wright and Anther Hayes held a Christmas Party for 33 terminally ill children from the Royal Brisbane Hospital, at the Bribie Island Funland Waterpark. Each Lion adopted a child for the day and Santa visited with gifts for them all. For the next two years, it was a zone project but in 1993 it was elevated to a district project with Lions Clubs in the area becoming involved. On the 28th of November 1993, seventeen Lions and Lioness Clubs put on the Lions Camp Quality Christmas Picnic day at Bribie Island. They provided all the fun, food and entertainment free, for 600 people which included 147 Camp Quality children, their families and Lions club families. Every year since then, has brought a moment of happiness for these children, their families and carers, as well as older children upon their return. This special day, which is held on the last Sunday in November, at Brennan Park, Bribie Island Lions Club provides a full range of treats and activities, including the arrival of Father Christmas, with gifts for all the children.

LIONS 50TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL completed the connecting pathways. The Bribie Lions Club still maintain the Memorial Gardens today.

BRIBIE MEMORIAL GARDENS In November 1987, Harry de Gono, a member of the Bribie Island Lions Club proposed that the construction of a columbarium and memorial gardens should become a project of the club. This led to a request being made to the Caboolture Shire Council for a suitable site in early 1988.

Lion’s club member Kerry Wright remained District Co-Ordinator until 2003, with Lion Kevin Williams from the Bribie Island Lions Club becoming the District Co-Ordinator in 2004. Now known as the Liaison officer, Kevin Williams still holds this position, helping to provide a wonderful day out for those less fortunate. In 2019 the event hosted 200 people from Camp Quality and the Lions Club and 200 General public, totaling 400 people approximately. This year they will proudly celebrate as it will be the 30th year of giving to the children through this great Lions initiative, the special day being Sunday the 29th of November.

By the 25th of November 1990, it was deemed ready for an official Consecration Day which was performed by Pastor John Nichols who represented the Ministers Fraternal of all churches on the Island. Early in 1991, the first ashes were inserted in the Tristania Wall and the Memorial Gardens became official. Under project Chairman Lion member Bryce King instruction, Lions members Alan Suffolk and Brian Deadman took over as curators and landscapers and the surrounding gardens began to take shape, limited only by the inefficient water supply. The Caboolture Shire Council who constructed the entrance road and the car parks also donated a gazebo which was erected by the Lions Committee. The Lions Club then also

SENIOR CHRISTMAS LUNCH Another Great Lions Club initiative was to hold an annual seniors Christmas lunch. It was a dream of one of the presidents Phil Carne which became a reality on the first Saturday in December 2012. It is a very special day on the Lions Club calendar each year, also a much-anticipated date for many of their guests, as not everyone has family or friends to spend Christmas day with. So, this is it for many of them and what a way to spend it, laughing and enjoying the day. Sadly, Phil passed away in 2016, so the Bribie Lions Club dedicated this great tradition in his honour and re-named it the Phil Carnes Memorial Senior Xmas Lunch.

Over the last 50 years, the Bribie Island Lions Club has held a proud record of serving the community with providing many muchneeded amenities for the Island. They have also been able to ensure assistance is available for many charities and worthwhile projects not only on Bribie Island, but also District and Multi-District Lions projects serving the wider community with numerous fundraising efforts. The Local Lions Club has evolved over the years to meet the needs and expectations of our local community. In the early years, the club was instrumental in many “hands-on” projects such as the Lions Park at Woorim, which provided picnic facilities for the visitors to the Island. The facility was recently upgraded by the regional council as part of the Beautification Project for Woorim, and whilst no longer maintained by the club, it still bears the name “Bribie Island Lions Park” in recognition of the Lions contribution over the many years. The Bellara Lions Park established in 1989 was also a project of the local Lions Club. They have built and supplied our community with so many things, for example.

The residents of Bribie Island and Caboolture Shire have been very fortunate to have such an active and effective organization as the Bribie Island Lions Club. For over 50 years they have vigorously supported, through physical and financial means many

WHO was Mary Master WHO is Steve Jones? By Kathy Vincent

MARY MASTERS put an advertisement in the local Brisbane paper in November 1985 to start croquet on Bribie. A total of 12 members paid $1,000 each to start the Bribie Island Croquet Club and Geoff and Mary Masters headed the committee. The formation of the club happened when the then Caboolture shire Council offered land at Cosmos Park to the Bribie island Croquet Club. Early members had to raise money for the establishment of the initial lawns and equipment. So, Mary Masters was the founder of the Croquet Club which commenced in April 1992. WOW! How far have we

A blonde and a redhead have a ranch. They have just lost their bull. The women need to buy another, but only have $500. The redhead tells the blonde, “I will go to the market and see if I can find one for under that amount. If I can, I will send you a telegram.” She goes to the market and finds one for $499. Having only one dollar left, she goes to the telegraph

office and finds out that it costs one dollar per word. She is stumped on how to tell the blonde to bring the truck and trailer. Finally, she tells the telegraph operator to send the word “comfortable.” Sceptical, the operator asks, “How will she know to come with the trailer from just that word?” The redhead replies, “She’s a blonde so she reads slowly: ‘Come for ta bull.’” Late one night a burglar broke into a house and while he was sneaking around he heard a voice say, “Jesús is watching you.” He looked around and saw nothing. He kept on creeping and again heard, “Jesús is watching you.” In a dark corner, he saw a cage with a parrot inside. The burglar asked the parrot, “Was it you who said Jesús is watching me” The parrot replied, “Yes.” Relieved, the burglar asked, “What is your name?” The parrot said, “Clarence.” The burglar said, “That’s a stupid name for a parrot. What idiot named you Clarence?” The parrot answered, “The same idiot that named the Rottweiler Jesús.”

poacher, Buck is captured and eventually sold as a sled dog during the Alaskan gold rush. Viewers are given a glimpse of the suffering Buck endures surviving in his new surroundings. Over time he finds his place within the pack and emerges as a remarkably able and adept lead dog.

T

hrough a twist of fate Buck becomes the companion of Jack Thornton, played by Harrison Ford. Thornton is portrayed as a caring but defeated man trying to forget his past rather than enrich his future. He offers Buck compassion and care. In return, Buck provides devotion and protection. What challenges the viewer

in this otherwise endearing story of strength emerging from adversity is that Buck is Computer Generated and endowed with a range of human sentiments and virtues which work with only limited effect.

W

ith the film’s title playing out in the closing scenes, the promise of a “happily ever after” for Buck is tinged with inevitable loss. Given the audience reactions throughout the film, “The Call of the Wild” does appeal to a select group of young and old alike. View it yourself and see if you are among them. MADELEINE HICKS

What Sea Changers Want

REAL ESTATE

Living here on Bribie Island, you know just how good it can be living in such an idyllic location.

Madeleine Hicks

For folks living in Brisbane their summer holidays are now just a distant memory and the hectic hustle and bustle of city living is hitting home for them. It is about this time each year, at the Madeleine Hicks Real Estate office in Everton Park in Brisbane we start to see clients who are thinking about a Sea Change. Usually they are looking for some place that is still close to Brisbane, as they may still be working, but far enough away that they are able to relax and get away from the dramas of the world. Some may be looking for a place to retire to, where they can enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle and far less traffic, but still have access to all of the necessities, like medical facilities and recreation activities. Interestingly, in the past few years we are starting to see more younger families, mums and dads with a couple of kids, looking to make the move. They are possibly being squeezed out by home prices that are too high and looking for alternatives. So what is it that the Sea Changer is looking for? It is a combination of things, like a relaxed lifestyle, a beach is usually on the shopping list, cost of living that is cheaper than Brisbane (or no more expensive), proximity to the facilities that Brisbane has, a sense of community, cheaper housing, and the environment.... these are some of the main things. Whatever the Sea Changer’s situation is Bribie Island offers the ideal solution.

Orchids

O

rchids are the largest family of blooming flowers with over 25,000 species and over 100,000 varieties. They are often grown as houseplants or added to floral displays. But, not all orchids are tropical beauties. Wild orchids grow worldwide and can be found on every continent except Antarctica. These flowers have earned the reputation as difficult to grow, probably due to their need for filtered light and high relative humidity. Many varieties, such as the moth orchid (Phalaenopsis) are surprisingly easy to grow as a houseplant. WHAT DOES THE ORCHID FLOWER MEAN? The orchid has been held in high regard since ancient times. It symbolizes • Love • Beauty • Fertility • Refinement • Thoughtfulness • Charm ORCHID FLOWER COLOUR MEANINGS While all orchids symbolize love and beauty, the colour of the orchid can change the intended meaning of the flower. • Blue – Orchids come in every colour but true blue, but there are blue-tinted orchids. These orchids represent rarity

• Red – Red orchids symbolize passion and desire, but can also symbolize strength and courage.

• Pink – Pink orchids symbolize grace, joy and happiness and can also symbolize innocence and femininity. • White – White orchids represent reverence and humility, innocence and purity, and elegance and beauty.

enough, orchids give the world the sweet flavour of vanilla, too. MEANINGFUL BOTANICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ORCHID FLOWER In Chinese medicine, the orchid is used as a herbal remedy to ease coughs and lung diseases; treat kidney, lung and stomach deficiencies; and treat eye

diseases. The fragrance of orchid flowers is used in perfumes and beauty products. The beans of the Vanilla orchid are dried and used as a flavouring for sweet drinks and confections. It is a popular flavouring for ice cream, soft drinks and cakes.

• Purple – Purple orchids symbolize admiration, respect, dignity and royalty. • Yellow – Yellow or orchids represent friendship, joy and new beginnings. • Orange – Orange orchids symbolize enthusiasm, boldness and pride. • Green – Green orchids are thought to bring good fortune and blessings. They represent good health, nature and longevity. THE ORCHID FLOWER’S MESSAGE IS… The orchid flower’s message is difficult to dismiss. STREET APPEAL

f you don’t have a good first impression then a lot of people actually won’t get past the front door and won’t look at the property at all. A lot of people when walking into a house get a “feeling” or a sense of whether or not they like the property straight away. They are buying emotionally and if they don’t get a good emotional sense about

wanting to live there then they close their minds off and it’s like they don’t see all the good parts of your house on the inside. So getting a good street appeal is extremely important so let’s discuss the ways to increase the street appeal of your property. So, what are the ways that we can increase our street appeal about the

colour that they painted it 10 years ago and they haven’t changed anything in that time.

PAINT THE HOUSE A MODERN COLOUR

Often outdated colours, paint that’s peeling off, paint that’s faded doesn’t make your home look as high calibre as you want it to look and isn’t going to command the highest price.

So a lot of people when they’re thinking about selling their property they don’t actually want to do anything to it to make it look great and they leave it as the

You can paint the roof and cover-up the rust or the discolouring that may have occurred from rainfall over the time, you can help protect the roof and can also help the roof look a whole bunch better. Now obviously you’re not going to paint tiles but you can just fix the broken tiles rather than retiling the entire roof. If people see broken tiles on a roof then they may start looking for other problems on the property.

That might mean putting up a new picket fence, it might be painting your current fence, it might be putting hedges up or putting bushes up to make your fence look just a little bit nicer. Having an inviting fence is a very important part of improving your street appeal. Get your local fencing guy in for a quote as this is one thing that has to be done the right way.

FLOWERS

This can be done really inexpensively. Obviously there’s some flowers that are going to be very expensive, if you want to decorate your entire garden with orchids then you are probably going to be out for a few thousand dollars but you can get very affordable very costeffective flowers for your garden that’s going to help you out. So check out your local nursery. But by adding colour right when you’re open for inspections, then you are going to just add that vibrant colour and have that great street appeal.

HAVE A WELLMANICURED LAWN So this might mean you need to lay new turf or might mean simply mowing your lawn or

might even mean fertilising your lawn and just making your lawn look great. You obviously want to do this in the lead-up to your open houses and listing your property. Make sure it’s constantly trim so it’s nice and lush and try to give it as much sunlight and as much help as possible, get out there and water it if the water restrictions allow you to and just make that lawn look green because people for some reason love green lawns.

ATTEND TO THE MEDIAN STRIP

By tending to your median strip and making a median strip appealing you can increase the street appeal of your property. That might be, again, planting some flowers or planting some hedges in the median strip, obviously mowing the lawn, making the lawns look great. Tend to that area as if it was your own house because that is the first thing that people are going to walk on, the first thing that they’re going to see so you want it to be well maintained and well kept.

Why Do Swim Lessons Matter?

S

wimming is an important life skill that children and adults should learn as early as possible. There are many benefits in learning how to swim and it is an extremely important safety skill. Swimming is a unique activity that has the longevity of being a great form of exercise for toddlers, seniors and everyone in between. Swim lessons are important because they help teach your child proper swimming techniques, but also because it encourages them to be independent in the water. Something that can be hard

There are many situations and opportunities for your child to come into contact with water throughout their lives, and those situations can become extremely dangerous very quickly if they are unable to swim. Classes will help build up strength and endurance, as well as teach lifesaving skills that could one day save their own life or someone else’s.

SOCIAL SKILLS

Swimming classes are held in small groups of children of a similar age and with similar abilities. They will be able to interact with other children outside of school and learn valuable social skills. It’s another opportunity to make friends and have fun in a different environment than the classroom. Lessons typically include games and team activities to help make all kids feel comfortable in and around the pool.

BOATING, FISHING AND ADVENTURES

Fishing REPORT By Cheryl Williams

Welcome to another fishing report from gateway bribie adventures. With all the rain about it is certainly washing the creeks out of some good size fish and crabs. Mud crabs are being caught in Ningi Creek, Toorbul and Banksia Canals. Sand crabs are about in the passage in front of IGA Bongaree, Bellara and Gallagher’s. We have also seen some good size fish being caught over on ocean beach and 2nd lagoon has seen some

good size whiting, flathead and dart. Mackerel are certainly on the bite at the Bird Cage and at Red Beach so you need to grab some pilchards to catch a good feed. Bream are being caught throughout the passage at Bellara, Bongaree jetty, Red Beach as well as some at the 8th Ave carpark. The ripples are a great place to catch a feed of snapper and you can also try Sandstone Point and Bellara. Turner’s camp is seeing some good size whiting being

elcome to another beach report from Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours. The inland track is firm but is rapidly turning to mud, a bad patch is about 2km south of Poverty Creek camp area. The camp area is damp, the little wetland just behind the old cattle dip has sprung to life due to the rain, and there is a lot of native wildlife there to see. A large number of kangaroos are on the side of the track so keep an eye out for them.

ribie Island’s natural wonders and wildlife receive more protections with new number plate recognition

An innovative new 24-hour number plate recognition system will offer more protection for the local flora and fauna including the endangered loggerhead turtles of Bribie Island’s scenic recreation area. Minister for the Environment and Great Barrier Reef Leeanne Enoch said the new number plate recognition system will assist Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) rangers monitor all vehicles visiting the iconic Queensland Island.

“The Palaszczuk government supports QPWS rangers in managing the nature conservation and naturebased recreation of this picturesque area, ensuring its native wildlife and natural wonders are preserved and protected for everyone to enjoy,” Ms Enoch said. “This advanced number plate recognition system is a first of its kind in an Australian national park entrance and combined with the existing four-wheel-drive vehicle access permits, will help ensure that the ecosystem, native animals and turtle hatchlings are observed and not disturbed.” Cameras have been installed to provide rangers with real-time

Always have a used car inspected by a qualified mechanic before you buy it. A safety certificate or Statutory Warranty isn’t a substitute for a vehicle inspection. Make an independent inspection part of the contract and make sure the wording allows you the right not to purchase if the inspection is unsatisfactory. Most importantly don’t accept the car unless you are satisfied with its condition.

Saturday 8am to 12noon for all Servicing & Repairs

Make sure your vehicle is safe. Call today to book for your safety check.

6. PUT THINGS IN WRITING

Ignore any promise, warranty or guarantee that isn’t in writing as it is difficult to enforce.

7. CONDUCT BACKGROUND CHECKS

If buying privately, check the Personal Property Security Register online or by phoning 1300 007 777 to determine if there is any money owing on the vehicle or if it is listed as stolen or written off. The search certificate will also provide information about the vehicle’s features that should be confirmed to ensure it’s the correct vehicle. If there is money owing on the vehicle, don’t buy it if there is any doubt it won’t be paid as you will not get clear title to the vehicle and it could be repossessed.

Never sign an incomplete contract. Always read and be sure you understand it before signing. Also, be sure it is the car you want, can afford and that it is in a condition you will accept. With new vehicles, specify the car’s colour and delivery date on the contract. If a dealer does not deliver as agreed, depending on the terms of sale the contract may be terminated and deposit money refunded, particularly if the deficiency cannot be appropriately remedied by the dealer. If the dealer’s standard contract does not make provision for your specific requirements then you may need to insist on certain wording being inserted into the contract to protect your interests.

9. IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

Always get a copy of any contract, warranty documents and for used vehicles, the safety certificate. Remember to check the safety certificate is current, has sufficient remaining life to complete the registration transfer and all vehicle details are correct

10. INSURE YOUR CAR BEFORE YOU DRIVE AWAY

Compulsory Third Party insurance (CTP) is part of your car’s registration in Queensland, but you’ll need more protection. CTP insurance only covers personal injuries sustained by passengers in your vehicle, not at fault drivers and other users. CTP insurance does not cover damage caused to or by your vehicle. You should have Comprehensive Motor Vehicle Insurance or Third Party Property insurance as well.

The Bribie Islander

Dear Editor,

I refer to the letter from Charles Taylor, 28 February, which disputed with Diana Grey both global warming and that 2019 was the hottest year ever in Australia. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the 5 hottest years since 1961 were: 2019, 2013, 2005, 2018 and 2017. As evidence against this Mr Taylor claimed the hottest temperature recorded in Australia was 53.9 degrees in 1828. But climate scientists are talking about the average temperature over the entire Earth over a whole year, not isolated readings. Besides, spoiler alert, technology has moved on just a little since 1828 and we have satellites in orbit now taking continuous readings to great accuracy. Comparison of the annual average Australian temperature for every year since 1910 against the 30year average from 1961 to 1990 reveals the following: Before 1961 only 8 of 50 years exceeded that 30-year average, and none by more than 0.25 degrees. After 1961, 39 of 58 years exceed that 30-year average. For every year since 2012, the exceedance was more than 0.8 degrees and for 2019, 1.52 degrees, and every degree increase in the annual average, the maximum in the year increases tenfold. The modern data backs up what we are experiencing: hotter weather, longer summers, retreating glaciers, melting ice sheets and an increase in the frequency and severity of extreme weather. Neither, as Mr Taylor suggested, is global warming invalidated because parts of the world experienced abnormally severe winters. Weather and climate are related but they are not the same thing. So, a warming global climate does not mean that parts of the world will not experience periods of unusually cold weather. To further his argument, Mr Taylor quoted the findings of a 1955 study by Queensland University, which predicted the Gold Coast would be flooded to a depth of 5 cm by 2000. That 64 years ago, before the advent of

modern computing and without the benefit of all the subsequent research and data, a prediction was made that turned out to be incorrect in magnitude does not invalidate the trend. Sea level has risen by an average of 1.65 mm per year since 1880 and by 3 mm per year since 1994. And yes, there have been natural variations in climate throughout geological time, but natural warming has never occurred at the current rate. I agree with Mr Taylor about one thing though, there is a lot of garbage being fed to the public. It seems Mr Taylor is one who is only too eager to swallow it and then regurgitate it without any fact-checking of its accuracy or relevance. Martin Doré - Banksia Beach

Dear Editor, A quick response, if I may, to Charles Taylor’s letter. Firstly, the determination of the “hottest year” covers the averages of the entire country for the whole year. A few very hot days in a couple of places are noteworthy, but while they may bump up the country’s yearly average a tiny bit, they don’t represent the whole story. See http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/ history/temperature/ for more information, and confirmation 2019’s status as the hottest on record. Secondly, it’s in the nature of newspapers to cook up the most sensationalist headline they can, and scientific research is constantly misrepresented in the media. Despite what the papers may have said, I very much doubt that the actual scientific study they were reporting on made any predictions about sea level rises on the Gold Coast. If you want credibility, quote the science, not the reportage. Finally, the recent massively cold winters in the Northern Hemisphere were, paradoxically, caused by global warming. The intrusion of excessively warm air disrupted the Arctic Vortex, which normally keeps the super cold air of the Arctic circulating above the Pole. When it collapsed, it pushed that freezing air

Could letters to the editor please be restricted to approx 200-300 words to allow all letters to be published. Thank you

southward. It was widely reported and commented on at the time obviously Mr Taylor missed it. Regards Diana Grey - Bribie.

To the Editor.

I am pleased that I have started a small Hornet’s nest with my article on Electricity generation & Climate Change. This is a debate that should be had by many others. I would like to congratulate Diana Grey on her letter, which in part refutes some of my statements. She is perfectly correct when she quotes wheat as a Grain that does not particularly like CO2. Most grains have a similar dislike. With the exception of Canola. I quote a few sentences from a paper from the Geological Society of London “The position paper did not include the beneficial IN GREENING THE PLANET effects of CO2 as this was not widely reported until the July 2013 CSIRO Study” It has been said by many of the societies that “97% of Scientist accepted that global warming was caused by man-made CO2” This paper refutes that assertion & quotes the names of 34 eminent scientists of that society that disagree. That group further says that” How can CO2 be called a pollutant when it is the primary nutrient in photosynthesis.”? Photosynthesis is the process that converts CO2 into the food that plants use.My comment on the clear feeling of those world’s forests that gives us our oxygen was not to suggest that the increased CO2 was beneficial to plants. It was to high- light that if those forests were still standing, then the natural balance of consuming this added CO2 would in all likely- hood remain somewhat neutral. There has been some warming over this decade, but since the 2008 El Nino, it has been very minor. After all, we are in a period of Global warming in that 700-year cycle. If one was to do the research, as I have done you would note that a 50 year & a 100-year cycle is also apparent. The 50 year one is more local, while the 100 year one is global.

The Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change takes a position that matches the observation that almost half of the warming that occurred over the last 150 years or so after the Industrial Revolution, had already happened by 1943, well before the rapid rise of industrial CO2. (The increase in CO2 lags behind the temperature rise by many years, variously between fifty & 200 years, again depending on the source.) This is a difference of opinion from other learned societies. However, most of those others are American societies/ Associations. There are 18 listed in this paper. One needs to be aware that many of these societies are US Government funded. It is conceivable that they wish to continue to receive that funding. Does that mean that it would not be appropriate for them to go against Government policy? After all, if “everyone” is saying that CO2 is bad for the climate, why buck the system. Just use their data & get funded next year. I accept the fact that CO2, be it natural or man-made does cause Global warming. I also agree that CO2 is not the only gas that gives us problems with Global warming. Let us get real. It does not matter in the long run if CO2 causes a problem with Global Warming, or even climate change (they are different!). The very real problem that started much of this debate is “Baseload power generation”. No one can argue that the sun does not go down each evening, or that the wind blows continuously all the time, so no matter how much better these echo methods of generating power gets, or for that matter the very great strides in battery storage of this power & it is going ahead in leaps & bounds. If the sun does not shine for more than a few days that form of electrical generation is in trouble! Then if the wind does not blow????? We must have a reliable baseload power supply! Cheers. Bill HINTE.
