Merry Christmas Dear Readers, Well I can hear Santa’s sleigh bells ringing and the big man is almost here. What a wonderful Christmas spirit Bribie Island has been showing! From the lights on your homes to the awesome display of boats in the Bribie Island Christmas Lights Boat Parade, the community has really come together. Speaking of community spirit, a huge shout out goes to all our non for profit organisations. The amount of work these guys put in to benefit our community is staggering. We have a few stories in this edition letting you know just how much they have helped our Island residents. Our local businesses have a couple of pages of Christmas wishes to you all, I know how much they value your support to keep their businesses afloat, especially in a year like this one.
May you all have a wonderful Christmas, hopefully with your loved ones as this year has been a hard one and families have been separated due to Covid. This is the year to appreciate not what we get, but what we already have. As always, I implore you to buy locally and keep our businesses afloat.

Don't let the festive season get you down: follow the tips and advice you find here, relax and enjoy yourself. It's a good idea to have some preplanned excuses to escape from proceedings if they get too stressful. Be imaginative and use things such as leaving the room to make a phone call to a friend or perhaps checking on a neighbour. Just by having planned a couple of escape routes, you’ll probably feel less stressed anyway but actually leaving the situation, even for 10 minutes, will help clear your mind and relax you.

HAVE FUN! Remember it’s your Christmas too so try to relax and have fun, laugh and be merry. If you do find others around you difficult then try to rise above the situation. If things don’t go to plan try not to worry too much, instead laugh about them and make them into fun memories that you can talk about during Christmases to come. Have a great, stress-free, Christmas break!
Christmas is, for many, a time of excessive eating and drinking and exercise can be easily overlooked. Diets and gym memberships are particularly popular in January! Exercise is a great way to reduce stress as it burns off hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline and helps produce mood-enhancing endorphins. Try going for a walk after dinner as the fresh air and exercise will lift your mood and make you feel better.

Lack of sleep can make you feel irritable and more prone to feeling stressed. Christmas often means late nights and early mornings, especially if children are involved, so your normal sleep routine may be reduced. Unless we can sleep, we are more likely to

his is a love story that spans over the decades, 80 of them in fact! David and Leila Wiseman have known each other for 82 years! They met while attending Sunday school at the tender age of 5 years old. As the years passed and they grew older, the friendship developed. Leila was playing in a tennis tournament and asked David if he would coach her. David agreed and a week later asked the lovely Leila to the cinema and so their love story began. David and Leila Wiseman where married on 27/12/1955 in St Peter’s Church in the market town of Stockton-on-tees Durham, England. The date was actually going to be the 24th of December, which was a Sunday but as no flowers were available, the date was quickly moved! David has had a long career in the Navy, serving 22 years in the British Navy and then 12 years in the Australian Navy. Leila also worked for the department of defence as a secretary in
Western Australia at new naval base called Garden Island, which they moved to in 1978. David and Leila Wiseman were blessed with 2 children, a daughter Helen who lives in Seattle with her 2 children and a son David, who also was in the services, joining the Australian army. Ironically their son David was born on their original wedding date of Christmas Eve. Their son David had 3 children with his wife Val, who David snr described as “a beautiful person who they are blessed to have in their lives”, sadly, David has passed away but Val is still a treasured member of the family. David and Leila made Bribie Island their home in 2002 and have happily settled here. When meeting David, I can only say what a charming gentleman he is, who is still very much in love. We would like to wish this couple whose relationship I can only describe as “A love that defies time” a very happy 65th wedding anniversary.

na and Arthur Smith met at a railway station. Arthur was working there at the time, (later becoming a station master for many years), and he gave Una directions as she arrived for her first teaching post in Wyee NSW. It turned out they were staying in the same boarding house and the rest, as they say, is history. They married in 1950, have had two children, four grandchildren and now three great-grandchildren, all of which they are very proud. Their daughter Jenny describes them as beautiful, loving and supportive parents, active in their community right up till 2016 when they came to live with her in their elderly years on Bribie Island. Before this, they spent most of their retirement years in Maitland N.S.W. with Arthur being

an avid golfer and Una a palliative care volunteer. They always valued connection with family and friends and hosted countless get-togethers. This year, at 92 and 93 years of age, their health requirements meant they needed to go into care in the Church of Christ nursing home on Bribie Island where they are still side by side, sharing a room. They are very grateful for the care and support they receive by all the staff who look after them so well. On 16th December they celebrate 70 years of marriage, saying they know that they are blessed to have made it this far together. Two celebrations are planned for this amazing milestone, one with family and a special morning tea at the home as well.

not new and not mine. During a bed-making session, Nan asked me to describe my dream dress. I dreamily replied it should be a floor-length blue taffeta dress. I wanted the opposite of the industrialstrength hard-wearing clothes I normally wore. I knew about the Lord Mayors annual junior ball and wanted to attend, but knew it would never happen. There was no money for such extravagances and anyway I had no ball gown. I forgot about the conversation and carried on with the bed making and dusting. The long-awaited Christmas day arrived. I wasn’t allowed in the big front room until Christmas morning, then I saw the ceiling height Christmas tree loaded with tiny
presents, fairy lights and baubles. Big, beautifully wrapped presents lay on the floor around the tree. On the tables and sideboards were once-ayear bowls of fruit and dishes of chocolates and a roaring fire would burn all day. It was a magical Christmas Cavern. I asked Nan what I should wear for Christmas lunch. She told me to wear the horrible heavy wool green pinafore dress and blouse donated by my real family. This made me feel glum and took the shine off the day but I did what I was told and changed into the hated second-hand clothes. After a huge roast lunch and Christmas pudding with thruppence in it, we went into the front room to open the big presents under the tree. I tore the wrapping

paper and ribbon off my biggest present. I took the lid off the box, pulled the tissue paper aside and saw some clothing. I pulled out the dress and more and more kept coming out until I realized it was a floorlength dress. It was my beautiful blue taffeta dream dress with a Peter Pan collar and a big bow on the back. It was perfect and exactly how I’d previously described it to Nan. I eagerly asked if I could change into my dream dress and was given permission. I was indescribably happy. I felt like a princess, a brand new dress specially made for me. I never imagined that Nan had listened so carefully to my requirements and then had it made up for me. All the family came over on Christmas afternoon to

In the evening 33 rev. records were put on the record player so we could dance. A favourite was the Blue Danube Waltz, which Grampy danced with me whilst I stood on his feet and he carried me around. I felt very grown-up and happy in my new dress. On Boxing Day the family always took a box at the theatre to see a pantomime, so that was the first public outing for my dream dress. I never did make it to the Lord Mayors ball, but I got so much pleasure from wearing a dress that for once wasn’t sensible and hard-wearing. It was and still is the best present I’ve ever received.

A GREEN LIGHT ON PROSTATE MATTERS
A
s men age, prostate gland enlargement can cause uncomfortable urinary symptoms – with half of men aged over 60 having some symptoms.1 Urologist Dr Sam Chopra from Caboolture Private Hospital said men often report symptoms like a weak urinary stream, difficulty starting to urinate, a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying, getting up frequently at night to use the bathroom, continued dribbling of urine, frequent urination and straining to urinate. As the prostate enlarges, it puts pressure on the urethra and the base of the bladder. Depending on severity, the condition of prostate gland enlargement – known as BPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia – may require no treatment, or treatment by medicines or surgery. A minimally invasive treatment known as green light laser surgery is available locally at Caboolture Private Hospital, performed by accredited urological surgeons Dr Chopra and Dr Joseph Schoeman. Dr Chopra says the green light laser surgery uses state of the art, high power laser energy which is specifically absorbed by the blood inside prostate tissue.
This energy absorption leads to vaporisation of the targeted tissue and opens up the once constricted passage to improve the flow of urine. “There are no cuts required to perform this procedure – the green light laser fibre is passed through the scope and the laser commences to vaporise the affected tissue, which usually takes around one to two hours, depending on the size of the prostate,” he said. Dr Schoeman said the treatment requires an anaesthetic and usually a onenight hospital stay. “With the laser sealing the blood vessels beneath the area of vaporisation during the procedure, there’s typically much less bleeding than with traditional surgery so green light laser therapy can be advantageous for patients on blood-thinning or anwti-coagulation medications,” he said. On Tuesday afternoon a hail storm made its way along Bribie Island Road through Ningi to the Island. It left a trail of debris in its path and damage to skylights, whirlybirds, and windows. Over 120 calls to the SES were made during this event from residents in our area. The Bribie Island SES Group made contact with and aided residents where possible within 48 hours. This was with the assistance of groups from the wider Moreton Bay Unit, including Arana Hills, Caboolture, Deception Bay, Petrie, Redcliffe and Woodford. This prompt and effective response highlights the commitment of all members of the SES, who have ensured their training has continued through the quiet storm seasons of recent years. We would like to acknowledge and thank the resilience of the community, and their willingness to assist themselves and their neighbours during this event. We are proud to be a part of such a community spirited area. Members of the community have kindly assisted us with supplies such as meals, drinks and snacks during this activation include Wrights Fruit Barn, Ali King & Brooke Savige. N A WINDY SATURDAY NIGHT, OVER 30 ENTHUSIASTIC BOAT OWNERS DECORATED THEIR BOATS AND TOOK PART IN THIS YEAR’S ANNUAL CHRISTMAS LIGHTS BOAT PARADE AROUND THE CANALS OF PACIFIC HARBOUR. THOUSANDS OF SPECTATORS LINED THE PARKS, VACANT BLOCKS AND HOSTED PARTIES IN HOUSES ALONG THE ROUTE FOR NEARLY 3 HOURS.
It was a really impressive display of Christmas colour on Pacific Harbour and one of the best for many years. “The parade seemed to go on forever, with big crowds making lots of Merry Christmas cheers at full noise”, said Greg Mulpeter, President of the Pacific Harbour Residential Community Association. The Bribie Island VMR yet again provided their boats for leading the parade and helping all of the boats to stay safe. Due to the windy conditions, it was necessary to bypass several of the smaller canal cul-desacs that may have been challenging to navigate. “We know some residents were disappointed that the parade didn’t pass
their home, but safety comes first and the VMR had to make the call on the night”, said Ritchie Bloomfield who lead the organising of the event for the PHRCA. The VMR also took on the task of judging the best-decorated boats. Given the effort that the entrants went to, it was a tough decision. The criteria for judging was the use of lights, a theme and effort with extra credit for audible music and interaction with the public. First Prize was taken out by a very excited Tracey & Deb Lang from Bongaree. “We spent 9 evenings, $100's of $$, numerous trips out to find lights, elves, and other features. We borrowed a cowbell from our neighbour and downloaded our own Christmas music to turn our wee boat into Santa’s Sleigh and Reindeers for our people to enjoy! On the night, wow! It was magical! The support from the community was brilliant. Three hours of absolute joy!” said Deb when they were announced as winners. Craig Hoolihan & Lee-Anne Brown took out second Prize. On receiving the news, they responded by travelling back to Bribie to donate their winnings to the Bribie VMR. Commodore Liz Radajewski plans to raffle the BCF voucher to raise more funds. Third prize was won by parade veteran Peter Pacey with his Boat “So Happy”.

he Surf Lifesaving lottery is on Bribie Island this summer, and recently a few of their best supporters were invited into the prize home for a special preview evening, before it opened to the public. hree years ago, GemLife Engineering Surveyor Corey Passlow set out on a mission to challenge himself creatively and use his knowledge and passion for marine life to leave a positive mark on the world. After years of hard work and dedication, Corey published his first book, BOB Saving the Bay, the first in a series of books for children between the ages of two and seven. “As a surveyor, everything I do is very mathematical and
scientific. I decided it was time to challenge the creative side of my brain,” said Corey. “First I tried to write a novel but that was no fun at all, so I decided to write and illustrate a children’s book instead.” Corey’s inspiration for BOB Saving the Bay was his grandchildren, Bella, Toby and Darcy, and his lifelong connection with the ocean and interest in marine life. The books are based around BOB the loggerhead turtle and his friends, SAM the dolphin, HOS
the dugong, CHOMP the shark, FRASER the whale and KOB the pelican, who all live in Moreton Bay. “There’s very little local content for kids that’s educational and relevant to the area, so I decided to make something,” said Corey. The book focuses on friendship, learning how to appreciate individual strengths, and marine issues facing Moreton Bay. Corey said BOB Saving the Bay was made possible by the support of his family and friends. “I wrote and illustrated the
book and my daughter, who is an early childhood educator, made sure the language and concepts in the book were engaging and easy to understand.” After having the book printed, Corey and his wife decided to set up a stall at the local market on Bribie Island, and couldn’t believe the response. “I didn’t expect to sell a single book but I sold over 30 the first day, which was great.” BOB Adult size T shirts are now available in a range of styles and designs on line (see below). In Jan 2021, the second book in the BOB series, BOB and the baby Whale, will be released and available to purchase online.

he San Francisco International Wine Competition is the largest wine show in The United States and is one of the most prestigious shows worldwide and this year Pinnacle Drinks won the ‘Best in Class’ trophy for their Cat Amongst the Pigeons Eden Valley Riesling 2020 vintage and received a Double Gold Medal which normally retails for $21. In total Pinnacle Drinks were awarded 31 medals at the show including three double gold medals and aside from the Riesling the Champagne Duperrey and The Advocate Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon also took out this award. The Double Gold is awarded to the very few entries that receive Gold Medal ratings from all members of the judging panel.

Another part of the Woolworths empire is the auction house Langton’s and their online Penfolds ‘Rewards of Patience’ auction has launched with the jewel in the crown a rare vertical set of Penfolds Grange, a Shiraz that was initially known as Grange Hermitage, including all the existing vintages of Australia’s most famous wine from 1951 to 2015 in total 64 bottles including 19 that were signed by Max Schubert the creator of the wine. For a wine that was initially confined to history after the first couple of vintages were given a big thumbs down by the wine critics and some skulduggery by Max where instead of stopping making the wine as instructed he continued making the wine and hid the resulting wine at the back of the warehouse undercover.

hristmas 2020 will be a Christmas like no other. Come with me for a visit to Santa’s household in lockdown. With toys and supplies increasingly hard to come by, cranky, bored elves are playing mean little tricks on each other. Imagine the indignant howls ... ‘He started it!’ ‘Ouch! Stop pulling my hair!’ Then there are the taunts and insults of disaffected helpers and the predictable responses. ‘YOUR ears are pointy!’ ‘Give me back that vest!’ And the usually genial Santa having to arbitrate. ’Now Gandalf. Leave Thimble alone! Chrystal, stop shredding the tinsel!’ ‘Felicity, have you looked at your own ears lately?’ ‘Bobbit ... that wood is for toy trains ... do NOT make me come over there!’ As for the reindeer, they too are without purpose, restless and bored. Donner has never been more doleful and depressed. Blitzen has become belligerent and baleful. And Rudolph has been listlessly sobbing for weeks and complaining about the other reindeers. HIs nose? Bright red of course. With the COVID curfew in place, there have been no test runs of the sleigh to look forward to, and frankly who can be bothered with reindeer games? The barn smells. There’s precious little hay and I’m afraid it’s become pretty unsanitary in there. Santa is not his normal cheery self.
Idle hands you know. He’s smoking too much (a pipe of course) and getting stuck into the Christmas plonk every evening. And as if the fat man wasn’t already a prime candidate for a cardiac event, he’s been pigging out on Christmas pudding like there’s no tomorrow. Santa’s considerable and growing girth is straining his red suit to buttonpopping. Santa’s wife, Mary has already had to let the seams out twice. She’s at breaking point. Maddeningly cheerful carols have been playing relentlessly on the Spotify app for months in the normally busy workshop with no Christmas chores to break the monotony. She’s nagging Santa more than usual. ‘ God, Claus why don’t you DO something for heaven’s sake!’ ‘Why don’t you use this time ... to ... get fit/ fix the lathe/ bake some sourdough bread!’ We all know how the virus has wreaked havoc on the mail systems around the world. Letters from children to the North Pole have been sporadic to say the least and Santa’s become totally uninterested in answering them, especially after he’s had a few too many egg nogs. His usual affability has deserted him. His hitherto positive prism no longer in place, he views what meagre letters from kiddies that trickle in to his mailbox as grasping and downright demanding. His growing cynicism plus the drinking is worrisome. ‘Lishen to
thish one Mary ... “I’ve been good and could I please have a doll’s house?” Sheesh. Does she think I can just flick my clingers and come up with a hollsdouse?’ You think things are bad in your neck of the woods? Spare a thought for Santa and all his helpers at the North Pole. So let’s all be kind to each other this Christmas. We deserve it.

1. PICK A THEME AND STICK TO IT
First things first, you need to pick your theme or the general style you’re going for. This could be colour specific, like the traditional red and gold, or something more uniquely
Australian such as a coastal setting. While you don’t want to be super strict about your table setting, a mish-mash of different styles will be distracting and not very effective.
2. MAKE USE OF OUR NATIVE PLANTS
A lot of Christmas décor trends this season are quite earthy and organic. A great way to bring this to life with an Australian touch is make use of our beautiful Australian natives including kangaroo paw, banksia, waratah, wattle and eucalyptus. Why not mix a few waratahs with some of our native greenery for an Australian twist on the classic Christmas red and green? Alternatively, sometimes the best option is to keep it simple – you could make a statement by keeping your table uncluttered and running a garland of eucalyptus down the centre.
3. GO COASTAL
While those in colder countries can’t imagine a Christmas spent by the beach, most Aussies wouldn’t have it any other way. Why not bring this Australian tradition to your table setting this Christmas? The possibilities are endless – you could go all out with a tropical theme or have a more subtle seaside influence. Opt for organic, natural tableware in a neutral colour, bring in some woven placemats and incorporate some pops of colours such as blue, turquoise or green. You could then accessorise with some palm leaves or shells. This needn’t be a shabby chic beach look and can definitely be made classy and elegant with some finer touches like gold cutlery or some coloured crystal glasses.
4. EMBRACE LAYERS
Whether you’re going for an Australian Christmas table setting or not, a good table setting should incorporate various layers and textures. Think linens, place mats and table runners alongside some foliage of some kind, an element of height and some smaller tid-bits to add interest (gum nuts are a nice Australian touch).

GINGER LINZER BISCUITS
INGREDIENTS • 125g butter, chilled, chopped • 1 1/3 cups plain flour • 2/3 cup almond meal • 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
• 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 egg • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 cup strawberry jam
METHOD • Step 1 - Place butter, flour, almond meal, sugar and spices in a food processor. Process until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Add egg and vanilla. Process until mixture just comes together. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until smooth. Shape dough into a disc. Wrap in baking paper. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. • Step 2 - Preheat oven to 170C/150C fan-forced. Line 2 large baking trays with baking paper. Roll dough out between 2 sheets of baking paper until 4mm-thick. Using a 6cm-round fluted cutter, cut 36 rounds from dough. Place on prepared tray. Re-roll dough trimmings as needed. Refrigerate biscuits for 20 minutes or until firm. Using a 3cm starshaped cutter, cut small stars from centre of half the rounds (see notes). • Step 3 - Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until light golden. Stand on trays for 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. • Step 4 - Spread uncut biscuits with a little jam. Sandwich with star cut-out biscuits. • Step 5 - Pack biscuits into paper-lined boxes or cellophane bags and secure with ribbon.

2 x 180g blocks white chocolate, chopped 2 x 395g cans sweetened condensed milk 130g packet honey and sea salt roasted peanuts 1/2 x 280g packet marshmallow noodles, cut into 2cm lengths 350g block milk chocolate, chopped
METHOD
• STEP 1 - Grease an 18cm x 28cm slice pan. Line base and sides with baking paper, extending paper 2cm above edges of pan. • STEP 2 Place white chocolate and half the condensed milk in a microwavesafe bowl. Microwave on HIGH (100%) for 1 minute 30 seconds, stirring every 30 seconds, or until melted and smooth. Add peanuts and marshmallow. Stir to combine. Pour mixture into prepared pan. Smooth surface. Refrigerate.

250g pkt plain sweet biscuits 125g butter, melted 3 teaspoons gelatine powder 500g cream cheese, chopped, at room temperature 395g can sweetened condensed milk 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste 9 x 45g assorted Nestlé KitKat bars (see note)
• STEP 1 - Grease a 19cm x 29cm slice pan. Line the base and 2 long sides with baking paper, allowing the sides to overhang. • STEP 2 - Use a food processor to process the biscuits until finely crushed. Add the butter and process until well combined. Spoon into the prepared pan. Use a flat-bottomed glass to press and evenly spread mixture over the base. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes to chill. • STEP 3 - Place 60ml (1/4 cup) water in a small heatproof bowl. Sprinkle with the gelatine and stir until well combined. Place the bowl inside a larger heatproof bowl. Pour boiling water into the larger bowl until it reaches halfway up the side of the smaller bowl. Set aside, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until the gelatine dissolves. • STEP 4 - Meanwhile, use electric beaters to beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add the condensed milk and vanilla bean paste. Beat until combined. Add the gelatine to the cream cheese mixture. Beat until combined. • STEP 5 - Pour the cream cheese mixture over the biscuit base. Smooth the surface. Place in the fridge for 6 hours or overnight until set. •STEP 6 - Arrange KitKat bars in a pattern over the cheesecake, trimming to fit if necessary. XMAS AT GemLife
The GemLife Bribie Island residents consider themselves very fortunate to be able to live in this wonderful area of Queensland. Many residents are involved in community groups like Lions, Probus and Rotary to name just a few. We are also passionate about supporting those in need and this year many residents have dug deep and created a wealth of donations to support a smaller welfare group that is active on the island and surrounds. The fantastic social group at GemLife have coordinated the donations which will be given to local support groups including Mark Scott who has been a quiet champion in our area for some time – working by word-of-mouth referrals, he and a small team of about 30 people have been cooking for those who are in need and helping out victims of domestic violence by rehoming. Many domestic violence victims leave their homes quickly with often little more than the clothes on their back and their children. Shelter,
food, clothes and equipment for daily living become a priority for Mark’s support group which is called “Good People Helping Good People”. This sort of grassroots support is the essence of the values of respect, care and facilitated independence. 2020 has been a tough year for many with COVID-19 creating many situations of financial, social and emotional vulnerability. Mark says that the number of requests for assistance in meal support and domestic violence has created an almost overwhelming demand. But thanks to a great team of home cooks and other supporters, the group has been able to churn out an average of 200 meals per week to those in need. And with the assistance of some local real estate agents, homes have been found for women and children needing to find a safe place to call their new home. This means that donated clothing, toys and furniture are directly placed to those in need. So from GemLife Bribie Island residents – we wish Good People Helping Good People a safe and joyful Christmas.

INGREDIENTS
• 400g middle bacon rashers, trimmed • 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil • 1kg cream cheese, softened • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika • 2 teaspoons onion powder • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 cup grated tasty cheese • 1/2 cup grated parmesan • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh chives • 100g box (8 packets) mini Chicken Crimpys • Maple syrup, to drizzle • Extra chopped fresh chives, to serve
METHOD • Step 1
Using a 6cm star cutter, cut a star from bacon. Finely chop remaining bacon. Heat oil in a medium frying pan over medium heat. Cook bacon star, turning, for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden. Set aside. Add chopped bacon. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until browned. Set aside to cool. Refrigerate bacon star and 1/4 of the chopped bacon until required.
• Step 2
Using an electric mixer, beat cream cheese, paprika, onion and garlic powders together until smooth and combined. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in grated cheeses, chives and remaining bacon. Mix well. Cover. Refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours or until firm enough to shape.
• Step 3
Place a large piece of plastic wrap on a flat surface. Turn cheese mixture onto plastic. Using clean hands and plastic wrap, form mixture into a tree shape (base of tree will need to be about 15cm in diameter). Place on a serving platter.
• Step 4
Using picture as a guide, push chicken crimpys into cheese mixture. Top with bacon star. Drizzle lightly with maple syrup. Sprinkle with reserved chopped bacon and extra chives. Serve. 34 www.thebribieislander.com.au

What a year 2020 has been!!!
One of the positives out of 2020 is the way in which the community pulled together during such difficult times. One example is the food assist program which started during the pandemic which saw 1000s of chef-made meals made for those in need. This program would not have been possible without the help and support of our community members. We would like to thank Peter Hammer and his wife Briony from Global Care along with all the Global care members and volunteers, Julie Thompson and Chef Corey from the Bribie Island community arts centre along with all members and volunteers. We would also
like to extend a big thank you to Simone Wilson, Fiona Gaske and Brooke Savige for all their help and assistance especially in securing the Rec Centre kitchen for our cook ups which we hope to continue into next year. A big thank you to Chef Nicky Steinhardt and all the other cooks, chefs and volunteers who tirelessly helped secure food and ingredients, cook, package and distribute meals. We would like to extend a big thank you to all those we may have missed and those whose names we do not know, we couldn't have pulled it off without your help and assistance and we are truly grateful. Bribie Island is a small community yet the spirit of the people who live here is strong and together we can get through anything. It was an outstanding success and really showed how, over 10 years, it has become an extremely popular exhibition and a premier event on the BICAS calendar. One of the original Art Tarts, Bev Porter, presented Dragon's Abreast secretary, Janet Brooks with the proceeds of the raffle...... over $1800! As you know, every year each artist donates pieces of their art for the raffle with all proceeds going to Dragons Abreast. We couldn't be happier with this year's outcome. Golden Whistler – Pachycephala pectoralis By: Marj Webber
M
ale Golden Whistlers are one of our most beautiful birds and we are lucky on Bribie Island to have many of them living and breeding in our bushlands. Common places to see them are in the bush along Red Beach Road and Hornsby Road but are likely to be seen anywhere there is suitable bushland. They are constantly on the move and is difficult to have them stay still long enough to take a photograph. A flash of yellow darting through the trees or their loud ringing, melodious call is the clue to alert us that Whistlers are present. They are one of our loudest and most beautiful song birds. If you are lucky enough see the male while perched you will notice the beautiful, bright yellow on the under body and the back of the neck, black thick head, white throat and dark wings with yellow edged feathers. Females are ordinary grey birds with a yellow splash under the tail. Immature birds are like females but have rufous wings. Golden Whistlers are quite small being only 16-18 cm in length and weighing just 25-35 g in weight. They have

several different calls and are most likely to be heard during spring. During winter they are relatively silent. In Australia they are found in eucalypt forests, rain forests and in Mallee and Brigalow areas along eastern Queensland, NSW, most of Victoria, eastern South Australia, Tasmania and the south west of Western Australia. Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands, Fiji, Indonesia, PNG, and the Solomon Islands are also homes for Golden Whistlers. They like to stay in thick bush where there are lots of places to hide from danger. In Australia they are mostly sedentary with some movement in the south during winter. There are seven species of Whistlers in Australia with two of the most attractive species residing on Bribie Island. The more common Rufous Whistler is the other whistler found here in similar habitats. Favourite foods are insects and their larvae, spiders and occasionally berries. Mostly they are lone feeders in the lower and middle parts of the forest picking their food from the foliage and under bark. The Bribie Islander
Breeding is mostly between September and January. Males use a special song and much strutting to attract the females. When the deal is clinched both parents set to work to build a cup like nest of leaves or fern fronds and small roots bound together with cobwebs and lined with softer materials found in the area. Nests are mostly built in forks and are usually 50 cm to 6 m from the ground. 2-3 brownish-cream mottled eggs are laid and incubated by both parents for 14-17 days. Nursery duties are shared by both mum and dad. The young leave the nest after about 12 days. There is usually only one clutch per season. Golden Whistlers were noticed in the early days of settlement in Australia and were first described by English Ornithologist John Latham in 1801. They belong to the family Pachycephalidae which means “Thick Head” after the large heads of this family. Similar species in PNG are actually poisonous, thought to be caused by eating poisonous beetles. They are covered with a neurotoxin which will numb your skin if you touch them. Conservation is still secure in Australia with the ongoing habitat loss always a worry.

hen Ferrari and I are out and about, there is nothing that terrifies the pair of us more than the sight of a small child under the age of five years. They are so totally unpredictable. One second they are sitting safely with their mothers, when a sudden idea crosses their tiny minds and up they get and are running, usually backwards, directly in front of Ferrari's wheels. I certainly do not blame their families, instead, I have come to believe that the urge to self-destruct is somehow hard-wired into the minds of the very young! Ferrari and I have learnt that the only way of preventing catastrophe is to stop completely, several metres away, and toot our horn. This will alert the adults, the child, of course, remains oblivious to any form of danger. Hopefully, older and wiser members of the group will grasp the child in an iron grip to prevent any form of possible escape. Ferrari and I then accelerate past with a sigh of relief from both us. Why do you think child-proof
tops were invented for pill bottles or child-proof locks on cupboards developed except to attempt to thwart these self-destructive urges? And they do not always work. The fiendish minds of the very young coupled with their determination to get at the “lollies” within have been known to triumph over the most scientific of safety devices. When I was teaching in high school I asked my students to write a short account of the naughtiest thing they had ever done when young. In every class, I received several incendiary tales of playing with matches. My own son found a box of the same on the beach and literally had his fingers burnt. This was nothing compared with the story my nephew only recently regaled to me. His father was always careful to keep his guns locked away when not in use but not so careful with the ammunition. He was in the Northern Territory at the time which no doubt explains everything. His small son enquired as to how guns worked. His father explained about a spring hammering
a metal firing pin into the back end of the cartridge, igniting the small explosive charge in the primer. I do not know how much of this explanation he understood but he certainly knew what a hammer was, and could reach the ammunition if not the guns. With one almighty blow, he hit a cartridge which promptly exploded sending shards of metal into his legs but fortuitously not destroying his manhood. A trip to the local hospital ensued, where the bigger pieces of metal were removed and the remaining remnants left to work their way out.

Without warning he suddenly stood up and jumped overboard! The profanities that escaped my husband's lips are unrepeatable! He cut the engine to prevent the fruit of his loins being sliced into small pieces by the propellers and yanked his son to safety. On the beach, he had just one question for the miscreant. “Why?”
In case you think I have unfairly been picking on other people's children my own son was not immune to these dangerous and suicidal experiments. Besides the matches already mentioned, he made another attempt at self-destruction.
“I wanted to see if my lifejacket worked.” came the answer. "And if it didn't?” asked his father. Ah yes, even the scientific method can have its pitfalls if not carefully considered.
From the ages of three and four, we would take both our children out fishing with us in our little tinnie, always being careful that they wore their bright yellow safety vests. After a very successful morning, we were heading for the shore when ISSUE 129 Dec 18 2020

We rushed up on deck like children let loose from school; the men and some of the women cheered her gloriously, for it was a treat to see a ship close
to us; there were, the Captain, 3 Mates and 8 sailors on board her; they waved hats, caps and cheered us heartily; we felt sorry when we left her behind. While we were passing her, a baby boy was prematurely born; he lived 24 hours the doctor christened him Thomas Stracathro and committed his body to the deep privately. 8th August - we have sailed badly since yesterday; scarcely any wind; the men are catching birds like fun; all on recovery now. 9th August - the day is really fine; an albatross is hovering round our ship; it is a fine looking bird very large - one of the men caught it with pork, but it was too strong and broke the line; one of the apprentices fell overboard today; two young men jumped in after him; luckily the sea was very calm, and the ship wasn't moving so they were hauled in without any difficulty; it caused a great sensation among the women. We are 1000 miles off Cape Leuwin, South West Australia; got plum jam; we are becalmed. 10th August - still becalmed; the day is glorious; the sea hasn't a ripple on it; look where you will everything looks serene and calm; the albatross keeps aloof; towards night a fresh

August 14th - Lat. 44.58S, Long. 138.12E. we travelled 305 miles in 24 hours, the best we went yet, `tis a fine day but rather cool; so easily giving the little ones cold, we have to be very careful of them for one day is quite warm and the next quite cold. August 15th - a fine bracing day; we have our boxes up for the last time before we land; our things have kept beautifully, not one article broken or spoiled, all well; there are some quarrelsome people here; the English are jabbering away about the dirty Irish causing ill-feeling and an occasional row among the men - the Irish are quick and hot and won’t be set upon by their sniggering neighbours; `tis amusing to listen to them. August 16th - a cold wild day; we are south of Tasmania; now `twill take us 2 or 3 days to get round the island; all well. August 17th - the weather is getting warmer; we are not going so well as yesterday, which
is a disappointment - the men are busy cleaning the beds and mess utensils as they are to be inspected on Saturday; the sunset this evening was glorious. August 18th - a lovely clear day, so bright and warm; the men seem to enjoy the bustle of cleaning up; the sailors are busy cleaning the deck and sides of the ship. August 19th - we had to turn out early today, our beds carried on deck, and berths scrubbed out, the place smells sweet and clean; we are all doing well and busy making bread. August 20th - a lovely day clear and bright; prayers at 11.30 am a great event happened last night in the birth of two baby boys, Mrs Fleming's at 12 p.m. and Mrs Leonard's at 8 am all doing well; a little mist and rain coming on. HAPPY 75TH Birthday Bill.
I
n 1970, Bill moved to London and completed his final makeup training with the BBC and the National Theatre. One of his first jobs was to work on the six part series of ’Elizabeth R’ starring Glenda Jackson. He worked with Sir Laurence Olivier and Dame Joan Plowright and he was a resident makeup artist at Drury Lane. He also worked at the Palladium, Royal Albert Hall, Covent Gardens, Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) and worked with Dame Margot Fontaine and Rudolf Nureyev at The Royal Ballet. Bill also worked with Joyce Grenfell on her one-woman shows and monologues. In 1974, he designed the hair and makeup for the Piccadilly Theatre production of ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ with Claire Bloom. That same year he worked with Australian Opera singer Joan Carden when she sang the part of Gilda in ‘Rigoleta’ at Covent Garden. Other famous performers Bill worked with in London, were Sir Ralph Richardson, Sir John Mills, Sir John Gielgud, Dame Sybil Thorndike, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Dame Joan Sutherland, Yvonne Kenny, Michael York, Liza Minnelli, Bernadette Peters, Glynis Johns, Dame Maggie Smith, Syd James, Hattie Jacques and the ‘Carry On’ team. Bill also looked after the Duchess of Kent, the Duchess of Argyle, Princess Alexandra and Princess Margaret. As for hairdressing salons, he worked in Biba London and with Vidal Sasson. He also worked for Xavier Wenger at ‘Xavier of London’ and spent many happy moments with he and his wife Sherry at their home in Birchington-on-Sea. Bill was given the opportunity to work in Italy at Salons on the Rio Da Corsa in Rome and then in Milan, Trieste, Florence and Naples. He worked on location with Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida, and worked on two movies in Venice. He then went to Monaco and Nice and looked after Princess Grace, as well as spending 10 days with Princesses Caroline and Stephanie looking after their hair and makeup prior to attending finishing school in Switzerland. Bill said the Grimaldi Princesses were very charming and caring and their 12th century home was stunning. In Paris, he worked for the famous Maria Carita and Alexandre de Paris. While working at Alexandre, Bill again cared for Princess Grace on several occasions. During his trips back to Australia he was
contracted to several companies including JC Williamson, the Melbourne Theatre Company, Channel 9 and the Queensland Theatre Company. He was makeup technician to Toni Lamond, Graham Kennedy, Bert Newton, Patti McGrath, Maggie Tabberer, Ruth Cracknel, Jill Perryman, Kevin Johnson, Nancy Hayes, Boy George, Simon Gallagher, Amanda Muggleton, Lorraine Bailey, Jon English, Frank Thring, Frankie J Holden, Colleen Hewett and so many other Australian performers. Bill told me that many of these celebrities had a positive impact on his life and many became friends. In Australia, Bill worked on numerous stage productions. The ones that stood out for him were ‘Oliver’, ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’, ‘Hello Dolly’, ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’, ‘The Tempest’, ‘Merchant of Venice’, ‘A little Night Music’, ‘Godspell’, ‘Hair’, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘Three Sisters’, ‘The Glass Menagerie’, ‘Porgy and Bess’, ‘The Little Shop of Horrors’, Ruth Cracknel’s One Woman Show, ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’, La Boheme’, ‘Pagliacci’, ‘West Side Story’, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Die Fledermaus’ and ‘Turandot’. Bill said designing hair and makeup for these productions was often challenging but he enjoyed the challenges and always had fun. In the 1970s Bill also worked in America, first at Universal Studios with the International director, Roy Bauer and his wife Joy. His boss in the Hair and Makeup Department at Universal was Jon Peters, whose partner at this time was Barbra Streisand. Bill spent many happy hours in Jon and Barbra’s home in Malibu, and worked with Barbra on two movies and cared for her hair and makeup for 5 personal performances and 3 television productions. And yes he was an understudy technician on ‘The Way We Were.’ Some of the other stars he worked with while in America were Natalie Wood, Joanne Woodward, Paul Newman, Liza Minnelli, Rock Hudson, Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Spencer Tracy, Harry Belafonte,
Meg Ryan, Doris Day, Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster. Mary Tyler Moore, Carole Channing, Loni Anderson, the cast from
‘Dallas’, Joan Collins, Farrah Fawcett Majors, Lee Majors and Roddy McDowall in ‘Planet of the Apes’. Bill was always amazed as he watched the actors such as Roddy change into character as their makeup was applied. He said they often stayed in character for the entire filming. Bill took 3 months leave from Universal and went to live in Philadelphia where he undertook training in ‘ Restorative Art’ which is makeup for the deceased to prepare them for viewing. When he returned to Universal Studios he worked on two movies one in Saudi Arabia and the other in Africa. He was then employed by Redken (Paula Kent Meehan and John Meehan), then Estee Lauder, and the Eileen Ford Model Agency in New York. Bill spent one memorial weekend travelling the Amalfi Coast with the Meehans and Debbie Reynolds. Bill said he enjoyed life in the USA and lived in Canoga Park, Beverley Hills and Brookdale while in Los Angeles. In New York he lived in apartments, provided by Redken, on 48th and 54th Streets. Even though the New York of the 1970s had a reputation of being unsafe, Bill loved the hustle and bustle of city life. After New York Bill was sent to London to work with Shirley MacLean on her one woman show. For this show Bill designed a clown face and created a stunning effect using his hands and a mirror from behind black curtains as Shirley sang ‘Send in the Clowns’. Back in America, Bill spent time in Las Vegas where he was contracted to the night clubs at MGM Grand and the Mint Casino in Fremont Street. He told me ‘what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’ but revealed he worked with many entertainers including Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, and Sammy Davis Jnr. He established a wonderful friendship with Sammy’s wife Altovise and was able to renew that friendship in Australia, years later. In Las Vegas, Bill prepared the hair and makeup for the dancers on the Wayne Newton show, worked with Sasha Distel, Des O’Connor, Mary Martin, Phillis Diller, Carole Bayer Sayer, Bruce Springsteen, Sandra Dee, Pat Boone, the Osmond’s, Leo Sayer and Peter, Paul and Mary. I asked Bill, what all these actors were like and he responded that many were prima donnas, but most were likeable. The Dames were a ‘laugh a minute – particularly Judi Dench’. Many suffered from pre-performance nerves and Bill often had to redo makeup following a vomiting bout! ISSUE 129 Dec 18 2020

Rudolph Cupcakes INGREDIENTS
• 200g plain flour • 180g caster sugar • 1 tsp baking powder • 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda • 40g cocoa • 175g Western Star Chef’s Choice Premium Cultured Unsalted Butter, softened • 2 eggs, room temperature • 2 tsp vanilla extract •150ml sour cream, room temperature
ICING AND DECORATING THE CUPCAKES
• 200g milk chocolate • 1/2 cup sour cream • 12 large milk chocolate buttons • 24 white chocolate buttons • 12 red Smarties • Black icing pens • 6 - 8 pretzels, broken into halves
METHOD:
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a 12-hole muffin tin with brown or red patty cases 2.Place the flour, sugar, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, cocoa, butter, eggs, vanilla and sour cream in a food processor. Process for 1 minute or until a thick batter forms. Divide the batter evenly between the patty cases until they are each 3/4 full. 3. Bake for 20 minutes or until the cupcakes have risen and a skewer inserted comes out clean. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the tray for 5 minutes, before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely

1. To make the ganache, place the chocolate and sour cream in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Stir with a metal spoon for 3 minutes or until the chocolate melts and becomes smooth. Remove the bowl from the heat 2. Place a large milk chocolate button in the centre of each cupcake. Place two white chocolate buttons on top for eyes, using a little ganache to stick them on securely. Add a red Smartie for the nose, again using the ganache to help secure the Smartie. Use the black icing pen to draw eyes in the centre of the white chocolate buttons, and then insert two half pretzels in the cupcake for antlers

Hydatid tapeworm passes from livestock to our pets if they eat an infected carcass. People can then become infected through contact with hydatid eggs in pet faeces. Hydatids were such a great public health risk that measures were taken and they are now very rare in Australia and have been completely eradicated in Tasmania. Meat inspection at abattoirs is vigorous - hydatids are big and visible, hence infected meat is easily spotted, destroyed and back-tracked. DADS ARMY DAWN GOLFERS A dedicated group of “Senior” golfers, who call themselves “Dads Army” are unsung heroes on Bribie. A group of committed golfers and “Hackers” get up in the dark, two mornings a week, to tee off at first light on Woorim golf course. Most mornings about 35 people compete, many hitting balls left, then right, then left and right again, as they progress around 9 holes to the sound of early bird song …….and a few rude words. Everyone agrees it is a great way to start the day, and the competition is well handicapped to give everyone a chance of glory. At the end of the year they compete to identify a “Gross Winner”, based on performance over two 9 hole rounds. What started out with a few friends going for a run, has become daily and weekly group runs that are looked forward to by our growing group. "Bribie on the Run!" has evolved into a social group of likeminded runners for both men and women. Some of the team can be seen out and about daily while others prefer the weekend warrior style. Whether you have contemplated running, and not known where or how to start or with who, are new to running or have been paving the footpath for a while, consider this your invitation to come along for an experience where you will run, laugh and meet new people. afterwards. Most of our gatherings are on the Island, but we also enjoy runs off the Island including Parkrun, trail runs and many organised running events and festivals. AUSTRALIAN FLIGHT
....with links to Bribie
T
his article is about pioneers of flight in Australia, with interesting links to Bribie Island. QANTAS was founded 100 years ago in Winton on 16th November 1920, and just before that, and the years that followed, daring men and women in their flying machines, set many records. The very first powered flight was in 1903 by American Wright brothers, for all of 12 seconds. Australia’s first was Bert Hinkler of Bundaberg who flew his first glider off the beach in 1911. He later made the first solo flight from England to Australia in 1928 in 15 days, and the first solo flight over the Atlantic Ocean in 1931. He died in a plane crash in Italy in 1935. Bert Hinkler inspired a family relative, the record-breaking aviator Maude Bonney, who in 1933 was the first woman to fly solo from Australia to UK. Some of the Bonney family
lived at Toorbul, across from Bribie Island. RECORD BREAKERS The first lady pilots were Harriet Quimby who flew the English Channel in 1912, Amy Johnson the first to fly England to Australia in 1930 and Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly the Atlantic in 1932,. The first solo non-stop transatlantic flight was by Charles Lindbergh in 1927, and Brisbane born Charles Kingsford-Smith made the first Trans Pacific flight from USA to Australia in 1935. However, the first and very dangerous, long distance ocean flight, from Newfoundland to Ireland, was by John Allcock & Arthur Brown in 1919, in a Vickers Vimy bi-plane. This achievement got attention on the world news, and before the cheering had stopped, Australia’s Prime Minister, Billy Hughes announced a prize of 10,000 Pounds for the first to fly

from England to Australia in less than 30 days. The Prize was equivalent to over one million dollars today.

They set out from England in a Vickers Vimy, similar to Allcock & Brown. A doubletailed Bi-Plane, with two Rolls Royce 250 HP engines, carrying a crew of four, with just enough fuel in
James Bennett, made the record-breaking flight from London to Darwin in 28 long and difficult days. They landed at Fanny Bay in Darwin, and claimed the 10,000 pound prize. After celebrations, they decided to fly south to Sydney and Melbourne where more large crowds would gather. Flying over

BRIBIE CONNECTIONS. A member of the Bribie Historical Society who is the grandson of Frank Hazelwood, the man who made the huge wooden propeller at Ipswich Railway Workshop 100 years ago, told me this story and shared many great photos and newspaper cuttings with me. One item is the personally signed note, which pays tribute to the great achievement.
Crew Grounded 1920 EMERGENCY LANDING Repair proved impossible and the only workshop in Australia that could attempt such work was the Ipswich Railway Workshop. The 580 Kg.engine was removed and transported with great difficulty via Charleville to the Ipswich Workshop. It took a month of specialised work, shaping 9 layers of laminated Queensland Maple wood, and the great skills of Patternmaker Frank Hazelwood, to eventually made a new Propeller and two new Con rods.
The Bongaree resident has another historical link with Bribie Island. Geoff Hazelwood’s great Grandfather, James Mitchell was a pioneer agronomist working for the State Government on Bribie Island in
The Experimental Farm was established at the same time as the first road was being cleared across the island, from the Jetty at Bongaree to the Surf Beach. Ocean Beach Road opened in 1924, and passengers could travel across the island on basic transport, past the experimental farm. It was soon recognised that the farm offered poor productivity and it was closed. Some year’s later part of the area became the Council Rubbish Tip for the increasing island population. My thanks to Bongaree residents Geoff & Carol Hazelwood, who shared with me these interesting stories. His agronomist Great grandfather on Bribie in 1923, and his Patternmaker Grandfather at Ipswich Railway workshop in 1920.

AUSSIES COULD CONTRIBUTE $1.2 BILLION TO THE SMALL BUSINESS SECTOR THIS FESTIVE SEASON INTUIT QUICKBOOKS CALLS ON GIFT GIVERS TO BUY JUST ONE EXTRA GIFT FROM A SMALL BUSINESS AS WE CLOSE OUT 2020 Australians could deliver an estimated $1.12 billion to the small business sector this festive season by buying just one more gift from their favourite local business. From bushfires to a global pandemic, the past year has delivered one devastating blow after another to the sector, with many Australian small businesses concerned about their ongoing survival. The 2020 Christmas retail period is one that businesses are relying on to provide a much needed cash flow boost, but the research showed that only just over onethird (36 per cent) of all gifts this year will be bought from small businesses. Despite this, the Season of Small Research revealed that on average, Aussies say they expect to cut back on their Christmas shopping this year, by buying one less gift. In response, Intuit Quickbooks has issued a rallying cry for Aussies to support the
backbone of the Australian economy as 2020 comes to a close, and buy just one more gift this Christmas from a local small business. “There has been a significant amount of financial turmoil for small businesses this year. The great news is that just by buying one extra gift from a small business this Christmas, you could make a huge difference to the people that give so much to the community, be it a neighbour, a friend or a family member. Small businesses really are the lifeblood of the community and without our support we could be looking at a very different small business landscape in the New Year.” Intuit Australia spokesperson, Gabrielle Dracopoulos Head of Customer Experience, says. For those who do shop with local small businesses, the benefits are more personal than just supporting the local economy. According to the research findings, 51 per cent of those who shop with small businesses say they do so because they are able to give back to the community, 43 per cent say they find more niche products, and 40 per cent see it as a more intimate
experience. In fact, 28 per cent of Aussies say supporting small business is like eating a family home cooked meal, while a quarter (24 per cent) say it gives them the same feeling as wrapping their hands around the perfect hot drink. Those Aussies who prefer to shop with larger businesses say they do so because there are more products to choose from (62 per cent) and they get better deals and discounts (60 percent). Small business owner Annemarie Dove from Byron Bay Candles is among those who have faced unprecedented challenges this year as bushfires and COVID-19 saw sales fall 35 per cent initially. She backed Intuit Australia’s call for Aussies to bring their Christmas shopping lists to their favourite local business. “We’re always reliant on the Christmas season to boost our cash flow but this year the situation is more critical than ever. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE AND WELCOME BACK. THIS ISSUE, WE'RE LOOKING AT FOUR GREAT PLANTS TO BUY FOR CHRISTMAS.
The best seller for many reasons is the poinsettia. Pictured is the variety with some bright red leaves. There are others that have pink or white, but of course the red and green is a popular table decoration or gift at Christmas. Traditionally they're also a hit in their native lands of Mexico and Central America where Christmas is of course, in winter, which is when they produce their bright leaves and small flowers. In our Australian summer, they are grown in controlled conditions (lower temps and light) to produce these festive colours. They usually sell out by Christmas Eve, so mosey on down to your favourite suppliers by this weekend if you want this beautiful specimen to adorn your table or family area at Christmas.

In the garden, you can plant them in full sun to part shade. They are classified as a shrub but are very easy to prune. Wear gloves if sensitive to white sap which leaks a little from the cuts. If you prune twice a year, you'll keep them nicely shaped and down to the size you want. Alternatively, they remain a fine specimen, and small, if kept in a pot near a window for years to come if that's what you'd prefer. Secondly, I've chosen the miniature salvia known as the 'Salvatore'. It BY: Peter Schinkel remains small and flowers deep blue from Spring to Autumn. These less traditional colours have become increasingly popular at Christmas, and what a perfect year to add another bright, joyful colour into our lives. The Salvatore will be fine inside, not too far from a window during the Christmas season and then pop it into the garden in January. It's best placed in a position that gets at least some sun. Thirdly, we have the delightful 'Fatsia Japonica' also known as the paper plant, Japanese aralia, etc. It's a really nice indoor plant which can also be planted in the garden in part sun later. Also a shrub, easy to prune and again "mind the sap". No reference to the London underground trains intended.

Meanwhile, this plant's glossy leaves beautifully reflect light and will surprise you with bunches of small flowers in late autumn and winter. Well maybe not so much of a surprise now, but you might forget I told you by then. And finally, an old favourite for many - the 'Happy plant' its flowing leaves variegated with lime green. A great indoor plant that keeps growing taller until you chop the top off, pop it back into another pot, or the ground, where it grows new roots and starts a whole new plant. Keep it moist for a few weeks when you do that, and always in at least partshade. Meanwhile, the original trunk will produce two or three new leafy heads from near the top where it was cut. SAR TRAINING Monday night 30th November 2020, all 3 of our vessels took part in a SAR (search and rescue) exercise on Moreton Bay, 5 senior crew members were being assessed. Conditions where not great which made it a perfect evening to show off their knowledge of their search patterns, SAR knowledge and their ability to command vessels to get the best outcome for the simulated lost vessels and passengers.

been installed and we are now awaiting the installation of the gate electrics. This gate will provide safe and secure afterhours access for our volunteers. For members who are not aware, both the driveways and gate projects were subsidised by grants. • We are emerging from our Covid-induced social isolation, and held a couple of successful State of Origin functions. • We have returned to fundraising activities with Sandstone Point and RSL raffles, and Sandstone Point parking. • There are some interesting events on the horizon including the Pacific Harbour Christmas lights, lolly drops, Santa visits and so on. • The engines on Bribie 2 are approaching 2000 hours and a subcommittee of Coxswains will be researching possible replacement timeframes for these engines. • The treasurer reported that our finances are on track, with responsible levels of investment set aside for maintenance and replacement of vessels, and maintenance and potential upgrades of the building. We now have over 1700 members -- 1550 of whom have rescue coverage. The radio room handled over 1,000 calls for the month, with 19 assists provided to members and other vessels. A radio system upgrade grant has been approved and purchasing of the new system will commence shortly. The committee has recommenced the review into the base building after a Covid related pause. For those of you who have not visited the radio room, it is very small and cramped for two people, making distancing very challenging! More details will follow at the December 9th General Meeting. In terms of vessel operations, it has been decided that some more advanced training for up-and-coming skippers would be an advantage, and so we will be out and about doing a bit more training in really rotten weather!

With 30 boats entering the parade at this stage, 40 people attended the safety briefing at VMR Bribie Island Base tonight. This was run by Commodore Liz Radajewski with assistance from Coxswains Ian Grimes, Jon Brice and Keith Freeman, who will also be the skippers of VMRBI’s 3 boats on duty at the parade on Saturday 5th December 2020. The parade is due to commence at 1900pm. Tracey Milligan-Marsh, Community Development Manager, Pacific Harbour Residential Community Association Inc., was also in attendance to complete
Winds of up to 20 knots are expected on the evening. Accordingly, Commodore Liz went through a simplified route for the parade should the coxswains attending decide (on the day) that it should be implemented for safety reasons. VMR Brisbane also plans to send 2 vessels to participate in the parade.
Saturday 5th December 2020 9am Danny Donald and Chris Graham visited VMR Bribie to produce an awareness video of the Electric Cable Crossing in Pumicestone Passage just South of the Bribie Bridge. On a recent inspection dive of the cable, some 19 anchors were hooked on to the cable and abandoned there. One particularly large anchor had raised the cable over 1m from the sea bed.

By Bribie Bait Tackle & Bikes Hi everyone, the last couple of weeks have been a little slow, now that we've had some rain I expect it to get better. Still plenty of Whiting with the flats around Sandstone Point, Red Beach and Woorim producing some good catches. Live blood worms are by far the best baits. Drifting for these across shallow banks produces the best results. There's been quite a mixed bag lately some really good Painted Sweetlip have turned up along the edge of the passage. Big Dan got this quality fish on fresh squid through the week. A few grassy Sweetlip are getting caught around the pylons of the Bribie Bridge and the odd nice sized Estuary Cod caught mainly at night. Floating Herring, strip baits and fresh squid is doing the trick, going as light as possible with

Plenty of Mackerel around the channel markers as they seem to be feeding on small Frogmouth pilchards with the top and bottom of the tide being the best times. Buckley’s Hole has produced a few Flathead, walking the flats with soft plastics on an incoming tide and some big eye Trevally caught on surface lures have been taken there as well. BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985) DeLorean DMC-12
The 1985 cult classic has a following of diehard fans, and perhaps its most beloved character is Doc’s car, the DeLorean DMC-12. Today, there are only about 6000 of these cars left on the market. And while it may have been used for time travel in the movie, the reality is that this was not a supercar. It was actually very slow and poorly manufactured. Due to the lack of experience from the DeLorean’s builders, it didn’t even come painted and only produced a measly 130 horsepower! Lastly, Marty McFly may have gone back to the future traveling at 88 mph, but the speedometer on stock DeLoreans only went up to 85 mph (thanks to a Jimmy Carter mandate to discourage speeding). The production crew had to build a custom speedometer with a digital speed readout to get around this snafu.
The Dukes of Hazzard (2005): General Lee, 1969 Dodge Charger
Apparently, roughly two dozen Chargers were used, but the majority of them didn’t last the stunt scenes. There are many Dodge Charger movies, but there's something pretty special about ol' General Lee.

Dear Editor It's nice when exceptionally nice things happen. After having had a really enjoyable meal at At The Jetty, (19/11) my wife and I were waiting for our taxi to arrive when a fellow diner, on his way home, asked if we needed a lift home. We said thank you but the restaurant had already called for a taxi. However, it hadn't arrived, and we had rung again. Thanked him and so we said we should be OK. He said he'd go to his car, drive around the block and if we were still here, he'd drive us home. No taxi arrived, and true to his word, some 5 minutes later a complete stranger to us, but a Banksia Beach resident, eased into the kerb and invited us into his car and drove us home to Woorim. We offered to give him money or to buy him a lotto ticket for his trouble, he simply smiled and said it was not a problem and he was happy to help out. In these days of uncertainty, it is so nice to see simple common courtesy and compassion still exists; and it certainly does on this Island. To that gentle stranger, thank you, you made a wonderful evening memorable. Cheers. A & J Proffitt. - Woorim. Dear Editor, A number of people have been saying for a while that Bribie Island needs a second Bridge as whenever there is an accident, nobody can move on or off the Island.
There was a serious accident on the bridge on Monday the 15th November which shut the bridge for a number of hours. To also show that we need another bridge is the number of developments on and around the island which are at sandstone Point hotel and the one across the street, the development at Ranald Ave at Ningi, the new apartment complex on Benabrow Ave and the development behind the park and ride both of them being on the Island. When there is an accident, ambulances etc. have trouble getting to the places they need to get to on the island. Also the council does not take into account the number of people, especially from the greater Brisbane area that visit the island especially during weekends, public and school holidays. Patricia Walsh Dear Editor, My Mum lives a Sandstone Point and frequents the shopping centre on Bribie and also does volunteer work on the island as well. Of late, when she goes to call for a taxi, the phone outside Woolworths is usually not in working order. If it is actually working, or she asks someone to ring a cab for her, most times it takes a good hour to get there, if it turns up at all. Even when she rings from home, she has to wait, most

times up to an hour. My question is: Do they not have enough cabs on the island? She does catch the bus occasionally, but needs to catch a cab if she has extra groceries. Do they not have cabs just for Bribie residents or is there a shortage of cabs and they end up running people into Caboolture? The phone outside Woolworths needs to be moved as you cannot hear for the noise of the registers and customers even when it is working which also makes the situation frustrating. I wonder how many other people have come across this issue. Wendy.
Well, What A Year 2020 Turned Out To Be.
We started the year with drought and horrific bushfires in many parts of Australia. While Queensland largely escaped the devastation that occurred in NSW, Victoria and the ACT, we watched in horror at what was occurring in our neighbouring states. Like most Australians, Queenslanders wanted to do our bit to help our southern neighbours and we saw some true acts of courage and selflessness. The true Aussie spirit of helping out a mate was on show for the world to see, and we dug deep to start the rebuilding process. Then came the floods. In February, parts of Queensland and NSW were soaked by more rain than many areas received in the whole of 2019. But once again we dug in and
endured. Then the COVID-19 global pandemic struck. Society as we knew it changed overnight as lockdowns and social distancing became the norm. We as Australians adapted to this change remarkably well and the results of following the health advice, along with Federal Government initiatives that kept many businesses open and people in jobs, mean we are now bouncing back. Australia has endured much this year, but I’d still rather be here than in any other country in the world right now. As all things in life, there is good that comes from bad situations. COVID19 has sparked a renewed level of patriotism for local manufacturing and reducing our dependence on other countries for items we purchase. The grade 12 students graduating in 2020 will be some of the highest achievers we ever have. They have had to adapt and learn to deal with adversity. Life has taught me that the greatest lessons are learned in the toughest times. As we head into the Christmas period, it will be a good time to take a step back, spend time with our families, reflect on what we have lost, and appreciate what we still have. I wish you all a Merry Christmas. God knows you’ve earned it! Stay safe on the roads and let’s hope 2021 will bring better days ahead.

FAKE ONLINE SELLERS With the festive season nearly upon us, ‘tis the season for online scams. The Financial and Cyber Crime Group are reminding Queenslanders to be aware of Grinch-like scammers and be sure to stay alert to scams, such as fake online sellers. While online marketplaces and classified sites are a popular way to buy and sell items, be aware that scammers are active on these sites and can pose as either buyers or sellers.
