Tips & Tricks for Finding a Reputable Podiatrist Near You

Podiatrists play a crucial role in maintaining your overall health by focusing on caring for your feet, ankles, and lower extremities. Whether dealing with a chronic foot issue or seeking preventive care, finding a reputable podiatrist is important. With numerous practitioners available, how do you select the right one? Explore the essential tips and tricks to help you find a reliable podiatrist near your area. From asking for recommendations to evaluating clinic atmospheres, you’ll find everything you need to know to find the right podiatrist.

Ask for Recommendations

One of the most reliable ways to find a reputable podiatrist is by asking for recommendations from friends, family, or healthcare providers. Personal referrals often come with insights about the practitioner’s bedside manner, expertise, and overall patient experience. Take note of multiple recommendations and research to find the best fit for your needs. Additionally, consider contacting local online forums or community groups for more suggestions. You can also check professional organisations’ directories to find accredited podiatrists in your area.

Check Credentials and Certifications

A podiatrist’s credentials and certifications testify to their education, training, and expertise. You can usually find this information on their clinic’s website or by contacting their office directly. It’s also beneficial to check if they participate in continuing education to stay updated with the latest treatments and techniques.

Experience Matters

If you’re searching for the best podiatrist, the experience should be a top priority. It often equates to expertise in the medical field. Look for a podiatrist with several years of experience treating various foot and ankle conditions. An experienced practitioner will be better equipped to diagnose and treat complex issues, ensuring you receive quality care tailored to your needs. Moreover, consider asking about their specific experience with your particular foot or ankle problem during your initial consultation. You can also inquire about how many similar cases they’ve successfully treated.

Evaluate the Clinic’s Atmosphere

The ambience and atmosphere of a podiatrist’s clinic can provide valuable insights into the quality of care you can expect. A clean, organised, well-equipped clinic indicates a practitioner who values professionalism and patient comfort. In addition, observe the staff’s demeanour and how

they interact with patients, as this can influence your overall experience. Pay attention to the comfort level of the waiting area and the amenities offered to patients. It’s also beneficial to note if the clinic uses modern technology and equipment for diagnosis and treatment.

Consider Specialisations

Podiatrists may specialise in various areas, such as sports medicine, diabetic foot care, or paediatric podiatry. Consider seeking a specialist if you have a specific foot or ankle condition. Specialised podiatrists often have advanced training and expertise in treating particular conditions, ensuring you receive optimal care. You can typically find information about a podiatrist’s specialties on their clinic’s website or by contacting their office. During your initial consultation, it’s also helpful to ask about their experience with your specific condition.

Read Patient Reviews

In today’s digital age, patient

reviews can offer valuable insights into a podiatrist’s reputation and patient satisfaction. While no practitioner will have entirely positive reviews, look for patterns in feedback that align with your priorities and concerns. Pay attention to comments regarding wait times, communication with the staff, and the effectiveness of treatments mentioned by multiple reviewers. Additionally, the overall rating and the number of reviews should be considered to gauge the consensus about the podiatrist’s services.

Inquire About Treatment Approaches

Different podiatrists may employ various treatment approaches and techniques. During your initial consultation, inquire about the podiatrist’s treatment philosophy and methods. A good practitioner will take the time to explain their approach, answer your questions, and involve you in the decision-making process regarding your care. Ask about the potential risks and benefits of recommended treatments to make an

informed decision. It’s also beneficial to discuss alternative treatment options and their effectiveness.

Finding

Your Perfect Fit

Finding a reputable podiatrist doesn’t have to be a daunting task. You can make an informed decision by asking for recommendations, checking credentials, considering experience and specialisation, evaluating the clinic’s atmosphere, reading patient reviews, and inquiring about treatment approaches. Remember, the right podiatrist will prioritise your health and well-being, providing personalised care to address your unique needs. Trust your instincts during consultations; a good rapport with your podiatrist can greatly enhance your treatment experience. Whether you’re looking for the best podiatrist in a major city or a specialist closer to home, these tips will guide you in finding a trustworthy specialist dedicated to keeping you on your feet and moving comfortably.

UNDERSTANDING THE SUNFLOWER LANYARD:

A Symbol of Hidden Disabilities

Have you noticed people wearing sunflower lanyards? This seemingly simple accessory holds significant meaning; it represents individuals living with hidden disabilities. In addition to lanyards, the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative also offers badges and wristbands designed to discreetly signal that the wearer may require extra assistance, understanding, or patience in various settings.

What Is a Hidden Disability?

Hidden disabilities are not immediately apparent to others. They encompass a wide range of conditions, including Neurological conditions, cognitive, Transverse Myelitis, polio, PTSD, anxiety, arthritis, endometriosis, chronic pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, vision impairment and many more.

Why the Sunflower?

The sunflower was chosen as the symbol for this initiative due to its positive connotations. Sunflowers suggest happiness, positivity, strength, growth, and confidence—qualities that resonate universally and promote an inclusive atmosphere. The sunflower lanyard thus serves as a gentle reminder to others that the wearer

may need a helping hand or a bit more time.

The Role of Businesses and Public Spaces:

Businesses and public spaces can show their support by displaying the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower sign, indicating that they recognise and are willing to accommodate the needs of people with hidden disabilities. This can significantly enhance the experience of individuals who may otherwise struggle in everyday situations.

Creating an Inclusive Community

Fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment is a shared responsibility. By recognising and supporting the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative, we can contribute to a more understanding and accommodating society. For more information and resources, visit the Hidden Disabilities website.

Working together, we can ensure that everyone, regardless of their hidden disabilities, feels valued and supported in our communities.

5 Great Ways Men Can Improve Full Body Blood Flow

As men strive to maintain optimal health and well-being, ensuring adequate blood flow throughout the body is crucial. From reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease to enhancing athletic performance, good circulation plays a vital role in overall health. If you’re looking to boost blood flow, here are five effective strategies to consider:

1. Stay Active

Regular exercise is one of the best ways to promote healthy blood circulation. Cardiovascular activities like running, swimming, or cycling get your heart pumping and encourage blood flow throughout your body. Additionally, strength training exercises help improve muscle tone and flexibility, which can further enhance circulation. To maximise the benefits, consider incorporating compression socks into your workout attire. Compression socks for men provide graduated pressure to the legs, aiding venous return and preventing blood from pooling in the lower extremities. For those with desk jobs or sedentary lifestyles, incorporating simple changes into your daily routine can be a game-changer in your health journey. Taking regular breaks to stand, stretch, or walk around can significantly improve your daily circulation. Activities like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or parking farther away from your destination are easy to do and can also have a positive impact on your blood flow, making it a manageable and effective strategy that you can easily incorporate into your life.

2. Maintain a Healthy Diet

Eating a balanced diet, a key pillar of good health, is not just a

choice; it's a commitment to your well-being. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can support cardiovascular health and improve blood flow. Foods high in antioxidants, such as berries, leafy greens, and nuts, help reduce inflammation and protect against oxidative stress, which can impair circulation. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish like salmon and mackerel are also beneficial for heart health and blood vessel function. Avoiding excessive consumption of processed foods, saturated fats, and sugary beverages can further support optimal blood flow, giving you the power to take control of your health.

In addition to focusing on nutrient-dense foods, paying attention to portion sizes and practising mindful eating can help prevent overeating and support weight management, which is essential for cardiovascular health. But it's not just about what you avoid; it's also about what you include.

Incorporating heart-healthy fats like avocados, olive oil, and nuts into your diet can also help maintain healthy cholesterol levels and improve circulation.

3. Practice Stress Management

Chronic stress can have a negative impact on circulation by constricting blood vessels and raising blood pressure. Incorporating stress-reducing activities like meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or tai chi into your daily routine can help promote relaxation and improve blood flow. Making time for hobbies, spending time in nature, and engaging in activities you enjoy can also help alleviate stress and support overall well-being. In addition to formal stress management techniques, finding healthy outlets for stress, such as spending time with loved ones, listening to music, or pursuing creative hobbies, can also promote relaxation and improve circulation. Prioritising self-care and setting boundaries to manage work-related stress can help prevent burnout and support cardiovascular health in the long term.

4. Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is essential for maintaining healthy blood volume and circulation. Dehydration can cause blood to become thicker and more viscous, making it harder for the heart to pump it throughout the body. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially during and after exercise, to ensure optimal hydration. Limiting alcohol and caffeine intake can dehydrate the body and help support healthy blood flow. Along with drinking water, consuming hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables can contribute to your overall fluid intake and support hydration. Foods with high water content, such as watermelon, cucumber, and oranges, help keep you hydrated and provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support cardiovascular health.

5. Consider Compression Therapy

In addition to wearing compression socks during physical activity, you may benefit from other forms of compression therapy to improve blood flow. Compression garments, such as sleeves, shirts, or shorts, apply gentle pressure to specific body areas, promoting circulation and reducing swelling. Compression therapy can be particularly beneficial for individuals with circulatory issues or those who spend long periods sitting or standing. Talk to your healthcare provider to determine if compression therapy suits you. Incorporating these strategies into your daily routine can help optimise blood flow and support overall health and well-being. By staying active, eating a healthy diet, managing stress, staying hydrated, and considering compression therapy, men can take proactive steps to enhance circulation and enjoy the benefits of improved blood flow.

Antique Buyers in the Area

In today's trend of downsizing and decluttering our homes, it's the perfect time to go through those drawers and cupboards, turn those unwanted items into cash. Antique Buyers, and father-son duo, Mike and Nate, will be in the Bribie Island area for one day only on July 9th.

"We are enthusiastic buyers, particularly interested in gold jewellery, whether broken or intact, antique jewellery, gold and silver coins, collectibles including military medals, and banknotes, as well as mechanical watches.”

“Everyone has something we want to buy, and nothing is too small for our consideration. We are just as happy to buy one item, as we are buying 10,000!" says Mike Cornish, the company's chief buyer. If you are in doubt about any items you wish to sell, take them in for an instant appraisal. See page 14 for full details.

Gold and Silver still at high prices

With the gold price still at higher than traditional levels, right now is an opportune time to explore your jewellery box and dig out those old gold chains, rings, and brooches, to turn them into cash. Mike emphasizes, "This is an ideal time to sell. We will buy anything made of gold – old jewellery, coins, virtually anything, even gold teeth! We also need silver in any form, including coins, and bars of any size."

Old coins can toss up a rarity

Check those drawers and cupboards, you may have a rarity lurking amongst your coins. “We want to see any old foreign coin accumulations. Bags, tins, boxes, folders, however they come, we will be quite happy to go through your coins on the spot and give you an idea of what we can pay. You just never know what can turn up!”

Rolex and mechanical watches wanted

Mechanical watches are needed urgently by the buyers. “Collectors at this stage want brands such as Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, and Seiko, just to mention some. These brands can command good prices depending on the model and condition.” Mike explains. "If you are unsure, bring your watches in for an appraisal."

We also offer home visits for those unable to visit us, or those with too much to carry. Refer to our advertisement for home visit times and call Nate on 0426 820 646 to book your appointment. For complete details, including venue time and location, please see the advertisement on page 14.

Top Benefits of Learning Through Play: How Kids Learn by Having Fun

AS ADULTS, WE CAN EASILY DISTINGUISH WORK FROM LEISURE ACTIVITIES OR UNIVERSITY CLASSES (AND EDUCATION IN GENERAL). FOR CHILDREN, ON THE OTHER HAND, THE TERMS ARE MIXED UP, SO THEY LEARN WHILE PLAYING, AS THE TWO ACTIVITIES ARE CONJOINED.

Learning through play is essential for children's physical, emotional, and cognitive development. So, how do children learn by playing charades or peekaboo, for example?

Children start by emulating their parents' moves and habits, then polish them to perfection by practice. Play provides the ideal practice opportunity, as kids are safe while playing but can still explore the world and the boundaries of their bodies and minds.

Benefits for physical health

Children might look clumsy from the adults' perspective, so plenty of helicopter parents

exist. However, we often forget that we have been bipedal for several decades, while the little ones started walking just a couple of years or even months ago.

This is where playtime can help, as kids develop their motor skills by jumping, climbing, and moving about. Children are still trying to grasp spatial orientation, so playtime is perfect for understanding how the laws of physics work.

They practise dexterity even when sitting down when playing, like with LEGOs or in a sandbox. Conversely, walking along a plank or swinging from a swing helps them understand balance.

Athletes practice several times daily, while children play daily to build up their core. Encourage outdoor activity that improves their physical strength. Apart from gross motor skills, play increases stamina, endurance, energy levels, and general body awareness. The latter will turn into body care later in life.

Which sports are best?

Seniors often wonder which sports are best for their old age, but the truth is, a simple walk in the park does wonders for their health. The same goes for children, as they needn't take up a sport to reap the full benefits of physical activity. However, if you wish your kids

to play a sport, then choose a group one, so they can socialise as well. From football to swimming, it all depends on which sport your child fancies.

Cycling and light jogging, for example, are excellent pastimes for the whole family.

Learning social skills

Children need to socialise from an early age. Before school starts, the best opportunity to socialise outside the family is at the local playground.

In this sense, playtime is the ideal opportunity for children to learn social skills by meaningfully interacting with their peers.

While sharing playground climbers, slides, and swings with others, kids learn how social interaction functions. The same happens at every childcare centre, where children learn through play. They might necessarily be aware of it, but every time they wait their turn to go down the slide, they are accepting valuable social rules.

Playing with other children teaches your little ones

compassion, temperance, compromise, tolerance, and a willingness to share ideas.

Aiding cognitive development

It is evident that children grow muscle mass and spatial orientation while playing, but their brains also grow. We refer to cognitive skills such as memory and understanding cause and effect. When playing, children learn how the world "clicks" together in every sense of the world.

Their senses become sharper, and they can process information faster. Playtime satisfies children's innate curiosity and the need to explore, leading to intellectual development and cognitive thinking.

Vivid imagination

Children use imagination when playing on the school playground or a playset at home. They imagine they are audacious pirates or astronauts landing on an unexplored planet, and the more vivid the imagination,

the better. When children pretend, play, imagine, and create, they are actually learning to think critically. This skill will prove valuable at school and later at work. Open-ended play stimulates children to be creative, brainstorm ideas and solutions, and conceptualise abstract terms.

Reaching emotional maturity

If they play often alone or with other children, your son and/or daughter will reap emotional benefits. Namely, they will better understand their feelings and emotions, allowing them to control them. This can be critical in anger management control, as children aren't exempt from mental health issues, unfortunately. Just like they process the concept of a seesaw through play, so can they process an emotion like joy or sadness. Playing football with friends and their team loses makes them sad, grieved, and even angry.

However, the more often this happens, the better they can process and control their emotions without their parents' intervention. On the other hand, when your kids get an A at school or win a prize, their self-confidence will grow while they learn to keep happy thoughts checked.

Controlled risk

There are many risks associated with running around the playground, so children are constantly exposed to the risk of injury. However, this doesn't mean that you should hold your kid back; rather, the risk should be controlled. Parental supervision is essential if you want playtime to benefit your child's cognitive, physical, and emotional development. Play comes naturally to children, and parents should facilitate their innate desire to explore the world through imagination. Allowing children to play has numerous benefits that help the little ones grow into responsible and, why not, playful adults.

WINELANDER

AN ANCIENT ANECDOTE CHANGED TO A MORE MODERN VERSION.

A prominent wine judge suffered a serious injury in a car accident on his way to a wine show and carried unconscious to a nearby house. A doctor who was called began to clean the wound with some old wine he found, some of which trickled down and touched the wine judge’s lips. He suddenly blinked and opened his mouth; everyone leaned forward to hear his last words, which he whispered: Grange 1974…….

Let’s consider having a wine and cheese tasting and how to make it a successful event. Wine is the perfect match with food, and over the years, I have been fortunate to have been involved with some outstanding events, but with the extensive varieties of wines and cheese styles from around the world, let’s concentrate just on cheese. Having a dinner party, the cheese becomes the final course, following the entrée, main course and dessert, and it can be made all the more interesting with a matching of fine wine. The French serve cheese before dessert, and the English finish the meal with a cheese platter after the dessert. In Italy, a piece of hard cheese with good bread is considered a meal on its own; here in Australia, we tend to follow the English tradition, although when having friends around, we tend to offer cheese and crackers before dinner, and I think that also works well. Firstly, temperature plays an important part and cheese should be served at room temperature and be balanced by the ‘weight’ of the wine; a big, bold wine and a light, delicate cheese or vice versa would destroy the effect you are trying to achieve for example the whiter and fresher the cheese you are serving will suit a young fresh, crisp white wine. The stronger and more mature cheese will suit a darker, heavier wine, not necessarily a red wine, though; remember, acid likes acid and sweetness in wine counterbalances the salt in cheese. Finally, keep accompaniments simple to avoid flavour clashes. After all, we are trying to complement the two and finish a successful dinner.

When serving cheese, it is important to be in prime condition, especially with softer white mould and washed rind cheese. These have an optimum eating time, after which the aroma will affect the matching of the wine. Use a separate knife for each style of cheese, try to present the cheese cut finely and not in chunks, and, of course, ensure each style of cheese has a different glass.

With the cheese taken out of the fridge half an hour to an hour before serving to come to room temperature, sparkling wine should be served very chilled straight from the fridge at around 3.5 to 5 degrees C, although with an

expensive Champagne, perhaps a couple of degrees higher to allow the aroma of the wine to come out. Young white wines are 7 degrees to 12 degrees, with more mature white wines at the higher end, red wines and fortified wines around 17 degrees C; here in Australia, on a warm evening, half an hour in the fridge before serving in sensible as there is nothing worse than warm red wine.

Fresh unripened cheeses such as cottage cheese, cream cheese, ricotta, mascarpone, and feta matured in brine will match well with sparkling wine such as Champagne or Prosecco, aromatic wine such as Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Pinot Gris, medium-bodied red wine such as Pinot Noir, Merlot (both can be served slightly chilled), and Grenache, and dessert wines such as late-picked or lateharvested styles.

White mould cheeses such as Brie and Camembert will match well with a buttery Chardonnay, a style that develops well from California, sparkling wines, or even fortified wine.

One of my faves for matching with wine is blue cheeses such as Roquefort, Stilton, and Gorgonzola, which really stand out when matched with dessert wines, especially botrytis styles of Riesling or Semillon. I remember tasting a Victorian cheese that had a very distinctive aroma, something approaching the smell of a marathon runner's shoes after the run, but strangely, the flavour was amazing, and the match with the wine was fabulous.

Cheeses such as Edam, Menthal, Gouda, Gruyere, and Havarti match well with full-bodied white wines such as aged Chardonnay or Semillon, medium-bodied reds, dessert wines, or fortified wines.

Mild Cheddar, Mature Cheddar, Vintage Cheddar, Colby, Red Leceister, Cheshire, or Lancashire cheeses match well with fullbodied white wines and reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Tempranillo, Rioja, Chianti, Malbec, and Mataro (Mourvedre).

Parmesan, Pecorino, and Romano are mainly grated sharp cheeses with sharp, robust flavours, and they need intense, full-bodied red or white wines, fortified wines, and sparkling wines.

THE VOICES CHORAL GROUP

now in its twelfth year, is more than just a singing group. It provides a platform for social interaction, skill development, community inclusion and integration, self-esteem, and confidence building. It's a safe space to find your voice and sing from your heart and a place where you can sing for healing, both for yourself and others. It fosters a positive environment that promotes friendship, acceptance, and laughter. Members cherish the thrill of performing, feeling the energy of singing for others and being immersed in applause, an experience they want to recreate.

The Choral Group is a diverse and inclusive community that sings everything from Old Time Music Hall to 60's folk music to Broadway. They harmonise and share professional vocal tips, but they emphasise having lots of fun. Everyone is welcome, especially those who feel like they "can't" or were told "not to sing". The group takes time to share personal stories and sing a variety of repertoire together with one voice. They generally produce up to 5 shows a year, showcasing the amazing talents of its members.

Experience the sheer joy and fun of singing with our choir. No experience is necessary, there's no audition process, and everyone is welcome. Join us and discover the thrill of singing in a supportive, fun environment. Singing is not just about the notes; it's about the joy and connection it brings. Come along and see how much fun it is to be a part of our choir.

The Voices Choral Group's next production, "CONCERT FOR A CAUSE", will be performed on September 7th & 8th. This show is not just about the music; it's about making a difference. It's a fundraiser for the Bribie Respite & Support Services dementia unit, and your participation will directly contribute to this important cause.

HOW BANKSIA BEACH GOT STARTED

Have you ever wondered when and why it was called Banksia Beach?

The name relates to Joseph Banks, a wealthy young man who paid his own way on James Cook's 1769 voyage of exploration to observe the Transit of Venus in Tahiti. He went on to first sail and name the coast of New South Wales. Banks was acclaimed as the hero of that long scientific journey of exploration, dubbed the “Father” of Australia, and appointed President of the prestigious Royal Society. Many things were named for famous botanist and naturalist Joseph Banks, including the Banksia Tree and over 50 species of plants, and place names such as Bankstown, Banks Peninsular, and Banks Island. However, Cook and Banks did not come near Banksia Beach or see the Bay or Bribie Island. The Bark Endeavour was sailing a long way off the coast when they saw and named the distant Glass Houses and Cape Morton. Joseph Banks recommended establishing a Penal Colony at what Cook called Stingray Bay and later named Botany Bay. That colony decision was

made 17 years later, 8 years after Cook's death, and Banks declared the land to be Terra Nullius (nobody’s land) when the First Feet of Convicts were sent in 1788.

BANKSIA BEACH

It was 200 years later that Banksia Beach was named by the Qld Place Names Board in 1972 and the initial developer decided to name some streets in the initial Banksia Beach subdivision after the Cooks voyage. These include Endeavour Drive, Solander

husband by 56 years and lived to the age of 94, outliving all of her six children.

Bribie Island was the traditional land of the Joondoburri people for thousands of years. The swampy sand country offered many plant and animal foods and abundant fish, crabs, and shellfish. These were valuable

for trade with mainland tribes for stones needed for hunting and ceremony, as there were no stones on Bribie Island. The first foreigners to set foot on Bribie were Matthew Flinders and Bongaree with the crew of the Norfolk in 1799, who met the Joondoburri when repairing their boat at White Patch and went up what he named the Pumicestone River to climb a Glasshouse Mountain. A memorial talking monument at Banksia Beach tells that story.

FIRST SETTLERS

Banksia Beach was always isolated. An early visitor in the 1890s was Gustav Dux, who came from the Caboolture River in a small boat to catch big Mud Crabs in the area now named Dux Creek after him. When settlement started, and the Bongaree Jetty was built in 1912, people acquired water access land at Banksia Beach north of Dux Creek, also known as Cobblers Peg Creek, for the spiky, noxious weed that grew there. Oyster harvesting in Pumicestone Passage was a major industry for many years, and the wreck of the coal carrier Avon was scuttled in the passage off Banksia Beach in 1915 to protect the reefs. However, Oysters declined after a mud worm infestation. The name Avon Avenue at Banksia Beach is a memory of that time.

In 1913, Harry Wright of the Brisbane Licensed Victualless

Great Depression for less than they had paid for it.

The Mountain View land was bought by Lavina Lindsay, an early Bongaree resident who lived next door to Jimmy-no-legs

pioneer settlers at Banksia Beach after World War 2. They built a small house on the foreshore near the road that now bears his name. They grazed cattle, had chickens and eggs,

Hagen on Shirley Creek, on the corner of Cotterill Avenue where Fairweather Village apartments now stand. She purchased the land during the great depression to support her family by grazing cattle and growing vegetables

Assoc acquired the whole area of what is now, Banksia Beach. Perhaps he saw a potential development opportunity but did nothing other than occasional holiday visits, and in 1925, he sold the land to Mr. Landels. Wrights Creek at the northern end of Banksia Beach was later named in his memory.

Mr. Ormiston acquired 100 acres at White Patch in 1920 but soon sold it to set up a general store at the growing Bongaree settlement. In 1925, Mr Landels purchased a square mile (640 acres) between Dux Creek and Wrights Creek, virtually the whole of the now-residential suburb of Banksia Beach. The Landels family came to Bribie from Samoa and purchased the largest block of freehold land on Bribie Island. They built a house on the foreshore they called “Mountain View”, but the sandy land proved impossible, so in 1933, they sold the 640 acres for 260 Pounds ($520) during the

and flowers. The land was water access only and subject to frequent flooding, but highly perfumed Boronia grew there and was sold to visitors to take

home on the steamship.

SUNDERLAND DRIVE

In 1945, Harry Sunderland and his wife Phyllis were the next

caught plentiful fish, and grew vegetables with fresh water from underground natural springs. Harry was a shearer and went away for a few months in season, leaving Phyllis to keep the Kangaroo and Dingo at bay.

LAND SUBDIVISION

In the 1970s, commercial interest in property development grew after the Bribie Bridge had been built.

Sunderland sold some land to developer Vercorp for the first residential subdivision, 70 house blocks around the natural Solander Lake north of today’s Sunderland Drive bridge and the present-day Shopping Centre. At the time, there was nothing in the area.

Sunderland Drive was constructed from Bellara around the extensive Dux Creek

a sales office and Information Centre was built, which was only recently demolished. Before Col's death in 2011, I was pleased to assist Col & Bry in publishing and launching his History of Banksia Beach book.

The initial small Solander Lake subdivision was later connected by Skippers Canal to Dux Creek, making it tidal and providing access to the passage.

Queensland Premier Mike Ahern opened the initial Vercorp Solander Shores development in July 1988 and is marked by a seldom-seen commemorative

Anchor and plaque.

area to the initial subdivision. Colin and Bry Fischer were among the first to buy waterfacing land for $16,000 on Solander Esplanade, and the award-winning gardeners landscaped and beautified their own land and Banksia Beach foreshore. The developer created a scale model replica of the Glass House Mountains in what was named Col Fischer Park, and

DOES HAVING A PET TEACH RESPONSIBILITY

Part 1

Children must be taught everything from how to use a fork to responsibility. Nobody is born knowing how to be responsible and care for themselves or others; these are things they learn as they grow up. One of the best ways to teach your child how to be responsible and make good choices for themself and others is to adopt a pet.

Pets don’t just teach children responsibility; any adult who adopts a pet will have a new sense of purpose that comes with responsible pet ownership. Anyone with a pet will make better choices to ensure its health and wellness. Pets can’t talk to us like people can, but they can still teach us a lot.

Pets require just about the same attention and care as children; they need regular vet visits and a schedule. Dogs are creatures of habit. Once you get them on a schedule, including when to wake up, go outside, and go for a walk, that schedule becomes hard to break. Other pets, such as cats, rabbits, and fish, don’t require as much planning and scheduling.

That being said, all pets must be fed, given water, and regularly seen by the vet. Cats and dogs might also require grooming. Everyone can benefit from being able to keep a schedule, especially children. Because your animal might require you to keep a schedule you’ve given them (accidental or not), you’ll be more likely to stick to that schedule, which is a form of responsibility.

Children, especially young ones, can benefit from schedules. As they grow up, they’ll learn the importance of schedules, so the earlier they learn when to wake up and go to bed, the easier it will be to get them up to go to school.

Even independent pets need human companions. Humans must feed them and fill their bowls with water. Additionally, dogs

might require training to learn how to behave at home and in public. Anyone can become more responsible because they must fulfil their pet’s needs. When a small child begins feeding their pet, they become more compassionate and learn how to care for others.

If you have a dog, you can’t always go on vacation for a week without having some plans or even sleep late on the weekends. Having a pet teaches us to put others first, especially when someone or some pet relies on us. Being a pet parent forces you to consider what’s truly important in your life.

For example, many pet parents can’t travel for long periods because they don’t properly care for their pets, meaning there’s nobody they fully trust to babysit their precious pet. Most of these pet parents don’t care that they don’t get to do everything they want to do; as long as their pet is happy, safe, and healthy, pet parents are content.

Frock, Food and Fun for Biggest Morning Tea Fundraiser

Food and fashion combined for a fantastic Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser at Bribie Island Bowls Club on Monday, June 17th. Our generous local Bribie community dug deep once again, and the Club was able to present the Cancer Council with a whopping $5,000 for cancer research and to help support those living with cancer.

Among the many highlights of the event, the fashion parade presented by Pina Colada Bribie was a true showstopper. The stunning clothes, beautifully showcased by our glamorous models Jen Herbert, Barb Turnball, Jo Lonsdale and Judy Noonan, added a touch of glamour to the event and were a big hit with the audience.

Our gratitude also goes out to so many local businesses who very kindly donated raffle prizes, including Bribie Island Gem Club, Bribie Cinemas (and Carrie's Cheeky Chocolates), Bribie Island Community Nursery, Bribie Skin and Beauty, Sunshine Mitre 10, Cr Brooke Savige, Ali King MP and Terry Young MP. Enormous thanks also go to our staff and Lynn De-Roule, Paul Campbell and Kerry Muller for creating such a great event. As always, the Club is so proud to be a part of such a great local community.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea is a community event that raises vital funds to make a big difference for those impacted by cancer.

Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea has brought together millions of Australians over a cuppa and a bite to eat in support for those affected by cancer.

Cancer Council Australia commenced in 1961 as the Australian Cancer Society, when the six state Cancer Councils - which then varied in name and brand - agreed to establish a federal body to promote cancer control at the national level. Cancer organisations in the ACT and the Northern Territory were subsequently formed

and signed on as members of the society.

While state and territory Cancer Councils continued to undertake most of the organisation's research, patient support and education programs, the federal body's primary role was to develop independent national cancer control policy - albeit on a comparatively modest scale.

In 1997, the eight jurisdictional members agreed to expand the Society, renaming it The Cancer Council Australia and appointing an expert Chief Executive Officer, Professor Alan Coates, to lead the organisation's push for improved national cancer control policy and build its profile. Specialist staff in communications, advocacy, business management, marketing and other professional roles were recruited to promote the organisation's mission.

Over the ensuing decade, member organisations uniformly adopted the name Cancer Council and together took on the daffodil, a global symbol of hope, as our common logo.

In May 2006, Professor Coates retired and was succeeded by Professor Ian Olver, then Director of the Royal Adelaide Hospital Cancer Centre, a former Chair of Cancer Council Australia's Medical and Scientific Committee and a bioethicist.

Tanya Buchanan was CEO from November 2020 to May 2024. She replaced Associate Professor Sanchia Aranda as CEO of Cancer Council Australia. Megan Varlow is Cancer Council Australia’s interim Chief Executive Officer following the departure of Professor Tanya Buchanan.

Cancer Council Australia has a network of advisory committees comprising professionals and consumers with expertise in public health, clinical medicine, epidemiology, research, education and patient support, who advise the organisation on its evidence-based policy priorities.

Cancer Council Australia is also allied with the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia, which provides advice on medical and scientific issues, and is a member of the Australian Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance and global collaborations such as the International Union of Cancer Control Organisations.

Understanding which qualities define an excellent real estate agent is essential because it allows you to zero in on the kind of professional you should work with. Who exactly is that?

A skilled real estate agent with good character and the right attributes.

Many people have felt the frustration of trying to find a tradie - how do you know if their work is good, that they're trustworthy and, above all, that they're not going to take advantage of you? Add the increased cost and delays on materials, as well as finding a tradie to complete a home project or fix a building, plumbing, or electrical issue, and it is becoming a headache for many. Like everything else, finding a tradie is all about doing your research.  Word of mouth is a beacon of trust; communication and presentation are indicators of a good operator. Be confident and ask questions. A reputable tradie will want you to feel at ease before proceeding with the job. While online reviews are a great indication, word-of-mouth is even more reassuring.  If you know someone who has had a good experience with a tradie, why wouldn't you use them? The tradie will also appreciate the reference and ensure your experience is consistent.

The first step in your tradie search should be their website. A well-designed website with clear photos of their sign-written van(s), tidy uniforms, and positive online reviews can strongly indicate their professionalism and reliability.

The next step, and one of the most crucial, is to get them on the phone. Their phone number should be easily obtained through things like their website. Pay attention to their professionalism on the phone. Establishing a positive rapport with them before hiring them is a strong indication of how the job will run, making you feel more secure and confident in your choice.

Understanding which trade is required for any job is also essential.  Some jobs are apparent: a ceiling fan requires an electrician, and a new mixer tap needs a plumber. But who does the retaining wall for the backyard? A landscape gardener, carpenter, handyman? Combined Trades is your local renovation company. Offering Painters, Plasterers, Concreters, Tilers,

Most homeowners install a security screen to protect their homes from intruders. With many "off-the-shelf screen doors and window screens, it is far too easy for an intruder to cut into the mesh or kick it in, giving easy access to your home. When you choose to use a high-quality security screen, you get the benefit of a mesh screen that cannot be cut through or kicked in, providing you with a sense of security and peace of mind.

At Bribie Screens and Things, customer satisfaction is their top priority. They go the extra mile to meet each customer's security needs, providing comprehensive support from the initial contact to the final installation. Their friendly technicians are always ready to assist and answer any queries, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience. Regarding impeccable customer service and premium security screen solutions, Bribie Screens and Things is the clear choice.

A high-quality security screen will allow you to keep your doors and windows open, giving you plenty of natural light and ventilation while keeping your family and your belongings safe wherever you are in your home. This not only enhances the security of your home but also adds to your comfort and convenience.

Bribie Screens and Things, a locally owned and operated business in Bongaree, stands out among other security screen companies servicing Bribie Island. Their unique selling proposition lies in their professionalism and genuine care for customers' home safety, making them the top choice for homeowners in the area. They take pride in being the exclusive suppliers and installers of premium-quality products from Prowler Proof, ensuring that their customers receive the best security solutions.

Choose a security screen that fits your budget and your home. Made-to-measure screens are a better option than buying off the shelf, as you can be sure they will fit securely.

Carpenters, Cabinet makers, and Renderers… I'm not sure about a candlestick maker, but as for tradies, you're covered! What should be included in a quote? The more detail in a quote, the more it can be trusted. A single dollar value at the bottom of a page is insufficient because it leaves room for a tradie to tell you post-job that some things weren't included – such as waste removal. A comprehensive quote from Combined Trades Pty Ltd ensures you're fully informed and in control of your budget. They understand that planning plays a pivotal role in renovating, and it's of utmost importance to start by considering fundamental aspects such as budgets and timelines before delving into the more intricate elements of the project.

Begin by creating a comprehensive scope of work, encompassing a detailed list of all the tasks that need to be accomplished. It is crucial to carefully assess what aspects can be updated and what necessitates replacement. This meticulous evaluation will aid in estimating a realistic budget, considering expenses associated with materials, layouts, and trades. Utilising a spreadsheet or budget tracker proves invaluable for keeping a vigilant eye on costs and monitoring all aspects of the renovation project.

Incorporating a vision board into the planning process is an excellent idea. Not only does it serve as a wellspring of inspiration, but it also assists in identifying the overarching style and aesthetic desired for the renovation.

Conducting extensive research is highly beneficial when embarking on a renovation project. Equipping oneself with ample knowledge helps avoid unforeseen surprises that may strain the budget and provides a better understanding of all the components involved in the project. Mood boards are a great tool to use to hone in on your individual style. But how do you go from mood board to deciding on products and materials, such as flooring, and locking in selections for your reno or new build?

Whether it's a feature wall, a ceiling detail, or a specific colour palette, these elements often become the focal point of your home design. However, if you're starting from scratch and want to create a cohesive aesthetic, consider beginning with your floor finishes. This approach allows you to establish a solid foundation for your design, as there are typically more paint colours and cabinetry selections than flooring options. By getting your base right, you can then build your design upwards, layer by layer. It’s amazing what new flooring and window accessories can do.  Carpet Call in Morayfield has it all. When you walk into the Morayfield location, you’ll be greeted by one of their friendly experts who can answer your questions and guide you towards the products that meet your style preferences. Carpet Call carries many carpeting and flooring options, including curtains, blinds, and sheers. Carpet Call has rugs, too, which you can view on their online rugs store! Please take advantage of their free shop-at-home service. You can even view, buy and receive products without leaving home!

How to style your home like a professional

that work together, your home has to be harmonious. Selecting a primary wall colour that will form the colour palette throughout the house, every room needs to feel like it flows seemingly from the other. You still want to create contrast and texture from your primary wall colour. For example, your main wall colour should be used on at least 50 per cent of your internal walls, while other rooms could play on that colour. You could paint some rooms a few shades darker to create a mood (perhaps a guest room you want to feel cosier or a theatre room), select similarly toned wallpaper, or even create a highlight feature fireplace or wall.

Once the flooring and walls have been selected, look for ways to create features or use highlight materials that can become your hero element. Shea from Feather & Flower has been a florist for 20+ years and worked for some of the best-voted florists in Australia. Like most artists, she wants to get her hands on everything, as she enjoys many different avenues of creation, from painting to jewellery making to pottery. Shea is excited to share her creations with you and show you some of the beautiful items her shop, Feather & Flower, has to offer while you are styling your home.

You can see how everything looks in your home when you use the free measure and shop-at-home service. The Carpet Calls team will measure relevant spaces to ensure everything fits. You’ll never have to cross your fingers and hope for the best again. Carpet Call will ensure you love a product before you buy it, starting with any elements you love and MUST include in the new space.

People become stuck deciding on the other finishes—will that cabinetry go with that flooring? Are there too many ‘loud’ elements in the space, or not enough, and it’s lacking character? On the issue of creating layers of materials

Hi I'm Shea your Local Florist. Operating from Beachmere, with 20+ years

It’s essential to think about materials that will sit together and touch. This comes back to where you want to select your features. Don’t spend money on a stunning solid timber floor if it will clash with an alternative timber product. Finally, to piece it together, you can create your selection board by ordering your samples where possible. Creating a selection board is a simple yet effective way to visualize how different materials will work together in your home. Unlike a mood board that inspires a concept, a selection board contains actual samples of each material you're considering. By placing carpet or flooring samples, tiles, paint chips, feature materials, and other products together, you can easily see how they'll look in your space. This straightforward process ensures that you're making informed decisions and feeling confident about your home design choices.

Gather your sample selections, lay them out together, and see if they work comfortably. You should get a feeling for how your home will look and feel. If something stands out because it’s not quite the right tone, then remove it and find an alternative, as on a larger scale, it’s likely to stand out more—and for the wrong reason!

VOLUNTEERS -

We thank all these volunteers for their continued support of Busy Fingers. Please think of us if you have any spare time and would like to make friends and give back to the community.

EXTENSION

In the last edition, I mentioned our wonderful volunteers who assist us in collecting funds that we use to assist the island associations and schools and enhance the quality of life for our island residents. I thought I would continue this look at our volunteers by mentioning another donation area within the shop: the linen and Clothing room, which is usually staffed by four volunteers.

Our extension has finally commenced, concrete was laid last week, so it is progressing well. We needed this extra space due to our limited storage area for the out-ofseason clothing boxes, and other items that we could not fit in the shop at the time. We will also have more room for medical equipment and a Men Only area; men often cannot find their “stuff”, so we will have an area with only their clothes, shoes, belts and ties and also their tools. Some of us have mentioned this to our many male customers, who cannot wait for their little domain. We hope to have the area open in about three months; we ask for your patience during construction as it may get a bit noisy at times.

DONATIONS GIVEN

not-for-profit associations and sporting clubs and the Police, SES, VMR and the BI Hospice. Our President Pauline is happy to come to your club and present our aims and goals and how your club can apply for assistance. Please call 3410 1920 or email busyfingers1@ bigpond.com if you wish to give a presentation or apply for a grant of assistance. When applying for assistance, please include a contact name and phone number and also a current equipment quote (from an island business if possible). Tell us a bit about your association/club and membership and why you need the equipment you are requesting, and email it to busyfingers1@bigpond. com. Please be aware that we only support Bribie Island associations and groups, not individuals.

donations we grant. Please note that when you apply for a grant, we require Quotes and Invoices to be in our name - Busy Fingers Fundraisers Inc. but for delivery to your organisation's address. Also, we have to advise that if you purchase the item before we grant it, we cannot reimburse you as the invoice is not in our name, so you must wait for our decision, and then we will guide you through the process. We do not want to disappoint anyone, so please follow these guidelines; if you have any questions, please send us an email or call us on the number above.

Linen: – usually 2, volunteers deal with all the linen we receive. Their duties include measuring all sheets, blankets, doonas and covers, tablecloths and curtains to ensure we know what size we are selling; they also check the quality to ensure items are clean with no stains, tears or holes and are not worn through or elastic no longer viable. Once they are satisfied that the items are in good condition and will give further service to our customers, they pack and seal them in bags or place them on hangers, price and put them in the shop for sale.

Clothing: this area is also attended by 2 (or sometimes, if we have a lot of donations and enough volunteers available, we may set up another table in the Bric a Brac room). All donations are checked to make sure there are no tears, stains, hems down or split seams and are clean and in good condition; they are placed on hangers ready to go out; there is very little time spent on the pricing of clothing as we have one price for the different categories. We only price brand new items or designer garments which are displayed in a different area of the shop.

With the help of our supporters and the many customers that come through the shop, we have assisted many associations on the island this month, including our permanent assistance to VMR and Global Care and also the Hospice for the Palliative Care Suite. We assisted the following groups, Banksia Beach School, with Jackets for their AFL Teams. Young At Heart Singing group with musical equipment and Bomboro Outriggers with fencing needs to secure canoe and equipment. I should mention that the long-awaited bus for the BI Surf Club nippers has finally arrived.

REQUEST FOR PRESENTATIONS AND DONATIONS

If you are a member of an island club or association and require assistance, please let us know. We try to assist all

We have received new guidelines for invoicing the

I would like to thank all our supporters and customers, and a very special thank you to the Bribie Islander and staff for their continuing support. I hope to see you in the shop soon. Sandra

HOARDING DISORDER IS A COMPLEX MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION CHARACTERISED BY PERSISTENT DIFFICULTY DISCARDING POSSESSIONS, LEADING TO CLUTTERED AND OFTEN UNSANITARY LIVING SPACES. IT’S CRUCIAL TO UNDERSTAND THAT HOARDING IS NOT SIMPLY ABOUT BEING MESSY OR DISORGANISED; IT’S A SERIOUS CONDITION REQUIRING COMPASSIONATE UNDERSTANDING AND PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT

RECOGNISING HOARDING DISORDER: BEYOND CLUTTER

Hoarding disorder goes beyond typical clutter, exhibiting distinct characteristics:

• Excessive Acquisition: Individuals with hoarding disorder often acquire excessive amounts of possessions, even if they have no practical use or value.

• Difficulty Discarding: Letting go of possessions, regardless of their condition or worth, causes significant anxiety and distress.

• Cluttered Living Spaces: Accumulated possessions create cluttered and often unsafe living environments, hindering daily activities and posing health and safety risks.

• Distress and Functional Impairment: Hoarding disorder significantly impacts daily life, causing distress, shame, and functional impairments in relationships, work, and overall well-being.

CAUSES OF HOARDING DISORDER: A COMPLEX INTERPLAY

The causes of hoarding disorder are multifaceted, often stemming from:

• Genetics and Family History: Hoarding disorder can run in families, suggesting a genetic predisposition.

• Trauma and Loss: Traumatic experiences, such as the loss of a loved one or a natural disaster, can trigger hoarding behaviour as a way of coping with emotional pain.

• Underlying Mental Health Conditions: Hoarding disorder is often associated with other mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Understanding Hoarding Disorder: Signs, Causes, and Pathways to Recovery

PATHWAYS TO RECOVERY: SEEKING PROFESSIONAL HELP

Overcoming hoarding disorder requires professional intervention and a multifaceted approach:

• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): CBT helps individuals identify and modify negative thought patterns and behaviours related to hoarding, developing coping mechanisms for anxiety and decisionmaking about possessions.

• Medication: In some cases, medication, such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety medication, may be prescribed to manage underlying mental health conditions that contribute to hoarding behaviour.

• Hoarding House Cleaning Services: Professional cleaning services specialising in hoarding cleanup provide compassionate and non-judgmental support, helping individuals declutter and restore a safe and habitable living space.

CHOOSING

HOARDING HOUSE CLEANING SERVICES: COMPASSIONATE EXPERTISE

Selecting the right cleaning service for hoarding cleanup is crucial for a positive and supportive experience:

• Experience and Understanding: Look for cleaning companies with experience and a proven understanding of hoarding disorder, ensuring a sensitive, nonjudgmental approach.

• Trauma-Informed Practices: Cleaning teams should be trained in trauma-informed practices to minimise distress and create a safe and respectful environment for the individual.

• Collaboration and Communication: Effective cleanup involves collaboration and clear communication with the individual, respecting their autonomy and involving them in decision-making.

SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES: NAVIGATING THE JOURNEY TOGETHER

Hoarding disorder affects not only the individual but also their families. SupporWWt and understanding are crucial for loved ones:

• Educate Yourself: Learn about hoarding disorder to better understand its complexities and challenges, promoting empathy and reducing judgment.

• Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries about acceptable behaviour and support, recognising that you cannot “fix” the situation alone.

• Seek Professional Guidance: Family therapy or support groups can provide guidance and coping strategies for navigating the challenges of supporting a loved one with a hoarding disorder.

Yearly Check-Up: Essential Things to Check in Your Home

Regular maintenance is crucial to keeping your home in top shape and avoiding costly repairs down the line. An annual home check-up can help identify and address potential issues before they become major problems. Here are some essential things to check in your home every year to ensure it remains safe, comfortable, and efficient.

HVAC SYSTEM (HEATING, VENTILATION AND AIR CONDITIONING.)

Your HVAC system is the backbone of a comfortable indoor environment. That's why an annual inspection is not just a suggestion; it's a necessity. Start by replacing the air filters, as clogged filters can reduce airflow and strain the system, leading to higher energy bills and potential breakdowns. Next, check the thermostat to make sure it’s functioning correctly and set to the appropriate temperature. It’s also a good idea to schedule a professional tuneup for your HVAC system. A technician can clean the components, check for issues, and perform necessary maintenance tasks. This helps prolong the system's life and ensures it runs smoothly throughout the year PLUMBING

Plumbing issues are not just a nuisance; if not addressed promptly, they can cause significant damage to your home. Begin your annual plumbing check-up by inspecting all visible pipes for leaks, corrosion, or damage. Pay close attention to areas under sinks, around toilets, and near water heaters. If you notice any issues, don't hesitate to contact a plumbing professional or one in your area to assess and repair the damage. In addition to inspecting the pipes, check the water pressure throughout your home. Low water pressure can indicate a problem with your plumbing system, such as a leak or a blockage. Use a water pressure gauge to test the pressure at different faucets and compare the readings to the recommended levels for your area.

FOUNDATION AND EXTERIOR

The foundation and exterior of your home are crucial to its structural integrity. Conduct an annual inspection to identify any issues that could compromise your home’s stability. Begin by walking around your home’s exterior and looking for cracks in the foundation, walls, or sidewalks. Small cracks can often be repaired with a sealant, but larger cracks may require professional attention.

Next, inspect the exterior siding, brick, or render for signs of damage or deterioration. Repair any areas that show signs of wear to prevent moisture from entering your home. Also, check the caulking around windows and doors for gaps or cracks. Reapplying caulk can improve your home’s energy efficiency and prevent drafts.

Finally, examine your home’s landscaping to ensure proper drainage away from the foundation. Poor drainage can accumulate water around the foundation, causing potential damage over time. Ensure that gutters and downpipes direct water away from the house and consider grading the soil to slope away from the foundation if necessary.

A yearly check-up of your home is essential for maintaining its safety, comfort, and efficiency. By focusing on key areas such as the HVAC system, plumbing, roof and gutters, electrical system, and foundation, you can identify and address potential issues before they become major problems. Regular maintenance protects your investment and ensures a comfortable and secure living environment for you and your family.

ROOF AND GUTTERS

Your roof and gutters are your home’s first line of defence against the elements. An annual inspection can help identify potential problems before they lead to costly repairs. Start by examining your roof for missing, cracked, or damaged tiles. If you notice any issues, hire a professional roofer to make the necessary repairs.

Next, check the flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights for signs of damage or leaks. Damaged flashing can allow water to seep into your home, causing significant damage over time. Repairing or replacing damaged flashing can help prevent leaks and extend the life of your roof.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS

Your home’s electrical system is critical to its safety and functionality. An annual check-up can help prevent electrical fires and ensure all components work correctly. Start by inspecting your electrical panel for any signs of wear or damage. Ensure all circuit breakers are functioning properly and there are no signs of overheating. Test all outlets and switches throughout your home to ensure they work correctly. Replace any outlets that feel warm to the touch, emit a burning smell, or show signs of damage. To enhance safety, it’s also a good idea to install ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets in areas prone to moisture, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor spaces.

The Coochie Hydrogreen Lawn Care Program (LCP) is a year-round schedule of lawn care treatments. These are positioned throughout the year to ensure optimum lawn results. Keeping your lawns a lush green and weed, disease and pest free from summer through to spring.

As the weather cools down and you spend more time under the blanket than out on your deckchair you may ask yourself, "why am I still getting my lawn looked after?"

Well here is why.....

1. The LCP is scheduled for 6 treatments each calendar year. These treatments are spread out slightly more during winter and occur more often during spring and summer. We know what your lawn needs and when it needs it.

2. Autumn and winter treatments are packed with pre-emergent herbicides which helps to reduce outbreaks of pesky weeds like bindii.

3. Damp, colder conditions are the perfect environment for fungal diseases to thrive. To avoid dollar spot and moss taking over your lawn, regular treatments are advised but outbreaks can also be treated on the spot.

4. The LCP comes with a warranty, which means if you have all 6 treatments during a calendar year and something in your lawn doesn't look quite right or you're not 100% satisfied then your local Coochie technician will come and spray free-of-charge.

Preparation For Winter

Keeping your lawn healthy throughout winter starts with good preparation in autumn and there's no better way to prepare than with Coochie HydroGreen.

In many other countries, winter is when lawn care takes a break, for Australian’s this is not the

case. Australian lawn owners truly have their work cut out for them during this season. Due to the comparably warm temperatures year-round, with the majority of Australia experiencing a mild winter, lawn care is essential year-round.

It may be tempting to stop lawn care due to the slowed growth and lack lustre look of your lawn, but if you put in the hard work this winter you can have your lawn looking lush and green ready for next Spring. Follow these 6 tips to have your lawn looking the best it can right through until Spring!

1. Get on top of weeds

Weeds take advantage of the low growth rate of your grass during winter and overrun your lawn. Winter weeds germinate at lower soil temperatures and weeds such as Bindi and broad-leafed weeds can be relatively easily controlled with the help of some pre-emergent herbicides.

2. Mow higher

During winter set your mower blade to be around 3-4 cm, and never cut lower than 2.5cm. repeated scalping will weaken your lawn and make it more vulnerable to diseases and weeds. Your grass will also be growing at a slower pace, so now is the time to be more relaxed with your mowing regime, and only mow when the turf needs it. Depending on the type of lawn you have you may only need to mow once a month!

3. Be wary of frost

It's important to try to keep off your lawn whilst it's covered in frost as walking on the frozen grass blades can cause them to snap and the lawn becomes damaged. Frost occurs when low

temperatures cause morning dew to freeze, this, in turn, can lead to leaf discolouration, stunted growth and sometimes the leaf to snap or break.

4. Aerate

Soils often compact during the winter so it is important to aerate as the soil warms up. Compacted soil is more susceptible to diseases, weeds and brown patches due to the lack of nutrients that are able to penetrate the soil.

5. Fertilise

Your lawn can and should be fertilised during winter to ensure it has all the appropriate nutrients to keep it green and healthy throughout the colder months. This being said, a different type of fertiliser should be used at this time of year, winter fertilisers typically contain higher levels of iron which will strengthen your lawn and keep the leaves healthy and happy.

6. Less water

Overwatering in winter can leave your lawn vulnerable to fungi and diseases. Only water when the lawn is visibly dry, and only water in the early morning until the frost is removed from the leaf. Having too much water in your soil can also lead to compaction, meaning you may need to aerate more frequently.

Jack says “At the end of the day winter lawn care isn’t any harder than any other seasons, small adjustments just need to be made to cater for the changing conditions”.

Indoor Plant Care

1: Essential Tips for Keeping Your Greenery Thriving

Indoor plants for home add beauty and charm to your living space and offer numerous health benefits by purifying the air and reducing stress. However, keeping indoor plants healthy and thriving requires proper care and attention. Whether you’re a seasoned plant parent or just starting, understanding the basics of indoor plant care is essential for ensuring your greenery flourishes. This guide will explore some essential tips to help you maintain happy and healthy indoor plants.

Choose the Right Plants

When it comes to indoor plants, the right selection is key. Before bringing any plants home, it’s important to consider factors such as lighting conditions, humidity levels, and available space. Different plants have different requirements, so it's crucial to choose ones that are suitable for your environment. For instance, low-light plants like peace lilies are perfect for rooms with limited sunlight, while succulents and cacti thrive in bright, indirect light. By selecting the right plants, you're setting them up for success in your home.

Provide Adequate Light

Proper lighting is a key factor in the growth and health of your indoor plants. Most plants prefer indirect sunlight, so it's best to place them near windows or in well-lit areas where they can receive bright, filtered light. Remember to rotate your plants occasionally to ensure even growth and prevent them from leaning toward the light source, as this can lead to uneven growth and weak stems.

Water Wisely

Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes made by plant enthusiasts and can lead to root rot and other issues. Before watering your plants, check the soil moisture by inserting your finger into the soil. Water only when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, and make sure excess water can drain away freely by using pots with drainage holes. Different plants have different watering needs, so research the specific requirements of each species.

Maintain Proper Humidity

Indoor environments tend to have lower humidity levels, adversely affecting certain plants, especially tropical varieties. To increase humidity around your plants, place a tray filled with water and pebbles beneath the pots or use a humidifier. Misting the foliage occasionally can also help raise humidity levels, but avoid overdoing it, as excessive moisture can promote fungal growth.

Fertilise Regularly

While potting soil initially provides essential nutrients, indoor plants may require additional fertilisation to support healthy growth. Use a balanced liquid fertiliser or slow-release granules formulated for indoor plants and follow the instructions on the packaging. However, avoid over-fertilizing, as this can cause nutrient imbalances and damage to the plant roots.

Prune and Trim

Regular pruning helps maintain the shape and appearance of indoor plants while promoting new growth. Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears to remove dead or yellowing leaves, as well as any spent flowers or stems. Pruning also allows better airflow around the plant, reducing the risk of pests and diseases.

Monitor for Pests and Diseases

Keep a close eye on your indoor plants for signs of pests such as aphids, mealybugs, spider mites, and scale insects. If you notice any pests or signs of disease, isolate the affected plant immediately to prevent further spread. Treat infestations promptly using natural or chemical-based solutions, depending on your preference and the severity of the problem.

Repot When Necessary

As indoor plants grow, they may outgrow their containers and become rootbound, which can restrict growth and lead to nutrient deficiencies. Repot your plants into larger containers with fresh potting soil every 1-2 years or whenever they outgrow their current pots. Choose pots with drainage holes and provide adequate support for the roots while transplanting to minimise stress on the plant.

Maintain Consistent Temperature

Indoor plants thrive in stable temperature conditions. Avoid placing plants near drafty windows, heaters, or air conditioning vents, as sudden temperature fluctuations can stress the plant and affect its growth. Use curtains or blinds to regulate temperature and protect sensitive plants from extreme heat or cold if necessary

With the right care and attention, indoor plants can thrive and bring joy to your living space for years to come. By following these essential tips for indoor plant care, you can create a healthy environment where your greenery flourishes and enhances the beauty of your home. Remember to observe your plants regularly, adjust care routines as needed, and enjoy the satisfaction of nurturing your indoor oasis.

WHY SEVERE WATER DAMAGE MUST Be Quickly Repaired

Severe water damage can wreak havoc on properties, leading to structural deterioration, health hazards, and financial burdens. Addressing water damage promptly is crucial to mitigate its adverse effects and restore the affected area to its pre-damaged condition. This article explores five compelling reasons why severe water damage must be quickly repaired to minimise the extent of the damage and ensure a swif recovery process.

Prevent Structural Damage

As a result of water infiltration, the structural integrity of buildings may be compromised, which can result in the warping, rotting, and degradation of various building components, including wood, drywall, and insulation. When support beams, floors, and walls are exposed to moisture for an extended period, they may weaken, which can threaten safety and possibly lead to collapse or structural failure. Property owners can avoid future structural degradation and protect the building’s stability and safety by swiftly addressing any water damage that has occurred. Intervention promptly is necessary to treat water infiltration at its source and to avoid expensive repairs or rebuilding in the future.

Mitigate Mold Growth

The rapid spread of mould and mildew, thriving

in damp and humid environments, is a grave concern associated with water damage. Mold and mildew can infest wet areas. In just twenty-four to forty-eight hours after water exposure, mould can grow, rapidly spreading throughout the building and posing significant health risks to the occupants. Mold spores can trigger respiratory issues, allergies, and other health problems, particularly in those with weakened immune systems. Swift repair of water damage and thorough drying of affected areas can prevent mould growth, safeguarding residents' health and preserving indoor air quality.

Prevent

Electrical Hazards

Water infiltration into electrical systems or appliances can create electrical hazards, increasing the risk of fires, shocks, and electrocution. Moisture can corrode wiring, disrupt electrical connections, and short-circuit electrical components, leading to malfunctions and potentially catastrophic consequences. Promptly repairing water damage and ensuring that electrical systems are thoroughly inspected and dried by qualified professionals can mitigate the risk of electrical hazards. Taking swift action to address water-related electrical issues is essential to prevent property damage, injury, and loss of life.

Minimise Financial Costs

Delaying repairs for severe water damage can escalate the financial costs associated with restoration, as the damage worsens over time and necessitates more extensive repairs or replacements. By addressing water damage promptly and comprehensively, property owners can minimise financial losses, expedite the restoration process, and mitigate potential legal liabilities, ultimately saving time, money, and resources.

Senior Constable Jo Arthur on Jun 13, 2024 @ 12:04pm

During the recent deployment of Operation Whiskey Legion in the Moreton District, our officers not only made an impact in our neighbourhoods and roads, but also on our waterways.

The Brisbane Water Police were actively involved in Operation Whiskey Legion, detecting two drug drivers, conducting over 65 name checks and issuing 20 infringement notices.

On May 27, at 1.30pm, a vessel was intercepted at Ningi. It is alleged the person in charge of the vessel returned a positive drug test for methylamphetamine.

A 48-year old Bellara man was charged with drug driving. He is scheduled to appear in the Caboolture Magistrates Court on July 15.

The Brisbane Water Police are patrolling our waters quite regularly and also investigate marine incidents that occur. The officers from the Water Police continually see boaties without the correct safety equipment including flares and Emergency Position-indication Radio Beacon (EPIRB). and not having enough or the correct life jackets.

Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) Bribie Island have assisted over 170 vessels and logged over 7100 calls between January and May this year.

Stay safe on our water ways, make sure you have the correct safety equipment and your boat engine is serviced regularly so you don’t have to make “that” call to VMR. If you see the Water Police out and about be sure to give them a wave.

COMMODORE CES’ SAFETY MESSAGE:

Commodore Ces advises for this coming holiday period check your LIFE JACKETS:

• do you have the appropriate life jacket for the whole trip?

• are the life jackets suited to the activity being undertaken?

• do you have one jacket for everyone on board?

• are the jackets in good condition and correctly labelled?

• if boating at night, do the jackets have reflective tape on them? and

• do you have an appropriate sticker/label showing where the life jackets are stored? Many boaters have their jackets still in their original packaging – this leads to lack of effective inspection and the deterioration of the straps. This in turn also makes it difficult to fit in an emergency.

The bottom line – life jackets should not be stowed and forgotten. They are difficult for a novice to put on in an emergency, and then it’s too late to realise they are inappropriate for the intended person in that emergency. Skippers should inspect each before each trip, show all passengers how to wear and have them easily accessible for use, preferably worn.

“PLEASE WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKETS!”

FISHING REPORT

June Fishing Report – Bribie Islander

Three weeks of almost perfect winter weather has ushered in great Pumicestone Passage fishing. As the weather has cooled, the bigger flathead has settled in at the mouths of the creeks all the way up the Passage and plenty are being caught. Flathead are lazy but aggressive and usually go for anything that comes close enough. Casting and retrieving soft plastics and hard-bodied lures will all successfully catch flathead. Kaelan cast around the Avon shipwreck, where two big flathead fell for his metal slug lure. If you’re shore-based, then casting out lures over the shallow flats on the incoming tidal flow should find the fish. Brendan’s three flathead (the biggest was 72cm) were all caught on lures at Whitepatch. Going after flathead, it’s always a good idea to add some strong leader to your line – they’re pretty good at biting through a regular line.

Make sure you use the tidal flow if you’re using bait – if you’re in a boat, drift along the sandbanks. Also, look for a weed bed or the edge of the mangrove. Jerone and Daniel were sitting over the weed bed near the second green marker south of the bridge on a recent afternoon rising tide, where “there was lots of company” – they used motor oil grub lures, as well as prawns and pillies, to get four keeper flathead and a flounder. Darren and Brianna’s biggest flathead was 67cm; they also used pillies.

A pilchard also caught a flathead for John (62cm), but mullet was probably the best bait overall. Jason’s was too big to keep, at 80cm – it was taken on mullet strip at about 10 pm on a VERY cold night, just near the first stairs at Whitepatch. The bream is pretty quiet right now – lots of littlies, but the big ones are interested in other things… but snapper are coming in more regularly. Just in time for the snapper “closed season”, of course. From July 15th to August 15th, you must throw any snapper back, no matter the size.

Tailor will continue to be fun for a while yet, over winter. There have been loads of baitfish throughout the Passage; Kim told me he followed a big school of herring from the second green marker south of the bridge all the way up past the Avon wreck. Sprays of herring leaping out of the water and birds swinging above them – that’s the best way to locate tailor. Adam and his mum just sat south of the bridge and used garfish to bring in tailor. West saw lots of tailor cruising past the ripples at Pacific Harbour and got lucky with a lure; Tayab caught tailor off Kalmakuta Park. It's been a bit lumpy to be comfortable further out in the bay, but tailor and whiting have been consistent catches at Cook’s Rocks and on the drift across

towards Red Beach. Fishing off the beach at Skirmish Point and Red Beach has also been worth trying. The middle week of July, with the smaller tides, should be a good time; it might be chilly, but early mornings are best, and the second and fourth weekends in July have the outgoing tide just about right for dawn fishing at the beach. It’s hard to find a gutter there but look for an eddy and cast so the line swings over to the edge of it. Pilchards have been working well for bait, but garfish hold better on the hooks and are usually just as tasty to the tailor. Winter whiting is another popular cool weather target. Both in the Passage and on the ocean-side, winter whiting is a reliable catch at this time of year and is good fun

for the kids. Banksia Beach foreshore and the south end of Whitepatch have been good spots to try. The whiting comes over the yabby banks there on the rising tide, looking for one of their favourite meals. Of course, if you get the chance at low tide, pumping some yabbies yourself will be a surefire way to hook a few whiting if you cast out when the tide starts to run back in. Other baits that have been doing almost as well in the past couple of weeks are worms, prawns and squid. You know, at a carnival side show, where “everyone gets a prize”? I reckon it’s been like that this winter with slimy grinners. They are everywhere, and no one wants them. One fellow over from Straddy said there was a plague of grinners right through Moreton Bay and “somebody ought to find out why!” I told him that I think I know why – for the same reason we sometimes have plagues of blue blubbers or toadies – it’s nature! The other reason is that we keep throwing them back. Maybe we need to find some good recipes for grinners.

Photos 1 and 2: Everton Park Fishing Club had another weekend of fishing fun. Here are Darol, with his 41cm (1kg) grunter, and Amanda, holding her 51cm (750g) flathead.

Photo 3: Abby’s 59cm flathead – it went back in, but she was still pretty happy! Photos 5 and 6: Even in June there are still crabs out there, getting into crabpots or coming up on the line

WHAT IS DOWN IMAGING and How Can it Help Your Fishing?

Down Imaging, a game-changing fish-finding technology, revolutionizes the way anglers explore the underwater world beneath their boat. This cutting-edge tool not only helps anglers identify their target fish species with precision but also enhances their fishing techniques, boosting their confidence in their fishing abilities.

By identifying the specific structure and vegetation where fish live, anglers can increase their chances of catching more fish. However, some potential problems associated with this can be solved with proper techniques.

One potential challenge with Down Imaging is its complex reading. To fully harness the potential of this technology, it's crucial for anglers to be well-versed

Banksia Beach

in the product and its features. This includes comprehending the various colours and symbols that signify specific areas or fish.

Interpreting the images on the screen can be a challenge for some anglers. But fear not, there are practical solutions. For instance, attending a class or reading instructional manuals can significantly improve your understanding of the technology and its operation, making it easier for you to use it effectively.

While it's true that many top-of-the-line models come with a significant price tag, it's important to note that there are also accessible, budget-friendly options available. This reassures you that Down Imaging technology is not out of your financial reach, making you feel more at ease about the perceived high cost.

Finally, the third potential problem is the perceived complexity of operation. However, with the right guidance and a bit of practice, anglers can easily navigate the product's features and settings. Understanding the different settings and how they affect the displayed images is a skill that can be learned, reassuring anglers that Down Imaging technology is not as complex as it may seem at first, but rather, a tool that can be easily mastered.

Additionally, anglers need to be able to adjust settings to capture the clearest and most detailed images. This can be achieved by attending a class or reading instructional manuals.

Anglers can maximise this technology by understanding the product and its features, choosing the right budget-friendly model, and adjusting settings to capture the clearest and most detailed images.

What is it and How Does it Work?

Down Imaging is a revolutionary breakthrough in fishing. It is a form of imaging technology that uses sound waves to capture an image of the underwater environment and fish below the boat. It works by transmitting sound waves down into the water and then receiving the sound waves that bounce back up from the bottom and structure. The reflected sound is converted into a digital image displayed on a chart plotter or fish finder.

This technology has revolutionised the way anglers locate and target fish, as it provides an unprecedented level of clarity and detail. It is incredibly useful for this purpose. By providing an image of the underwater environment and structure below the boat, anglers can easily identify the locations of schools of fish, hiding spots, and other features that attract fish.

It can also help anglers locate the best spots for casting, as the image will show any changes in the bottom or structure that create good spots for fish to congregate. Additionally, it can be used to determine the depth of the water and the size of the fish present. Down Imaging technology has made fishing easier, more efficient and more enjoyable. By providing an image of the underwater environment and structure, anglers can easily locate schools of fish and prime spots for casting.

Additionally, this technology can help anglers determine the size and depth of the fish they are targeting. This is an invaluable tool for any angler looking to improve their fishing skills and catch more fish.

Benefits of Down Imaging: How Does it Improve Your Fishing Experience?

One of the main benefits is that it allows anglers to make better decisions in targeting the right fish species. By providing a detailed image of the structure and composition of the water underneath the boat, anglers can assess the habitat and identify likely spots where fish might be hiding. This information is invaluable, as it increases the likelihood of finding and catching fish.

It also gives anglers an extra advantage when trolling. By providing a bird' s-eye view of the water, anglers can identify likely fish-holding areas and adjust their trolling speed and direction accordingly. This gives them an edge over their competition, allowing them to target the right fish species at the right depth.

Overall, it is an invaluable tool for anglers, as it provides them with detailed information about the water's structure and the fish's location. By enabling anglers to make better decisions and target the right species of fish, Down Imaging significantly enhances the fishing experience.

Whether you are a novice or an experienced angler, it can help you make better decisions when it comes to choosing the right spot and bait, which can mean the difference between a successful day on the water and a frustrating one. Give Down Imaging a try and see how it can drastically improve your fishing experience!

Dear Editor,

In regard to the current situation in Gaza, I would like to offer my thoughts; firstly, with all the sophisticated intelligence at Israel’s fingertips, how did this invasion happen in the first place so close to the border or was it deliberately allowed to happen? It’s a terrible thought that you would allow the deaths of 1400 people to happen to retain power, but stranger things have happened; Netanyahu and his party were on the nose after the protests against judicial reform; they are the far right and were likely to lose the next election and to have a function of this size with little or no protection from the IDF was rather strange. This gave Netanyahu the excuse to attack Hamas, which, as rocket attacks were becoming more frequent, was timely; it was an excuse by the far right to go after Hamas once and for all. However, Hamas isn’t your normal army. They don’t wear uniforms; they hide

behind women and children, they set up in hospitals and schools, and they have ammunition dumps in refugee camps and an extensive network of tunnels. Hamas has been the reason for over 36,000 deaths by keeping the hostages. After world opinion turned against Israel, they deliberately rejected any peace deals by adding new demands all the time. What Hamas has created could eventually see the Palestinian people ejected from Gaza altogether.

I am sure Yasa Arafat could have sorted this mess out, Hamas is just a bunch of terrorists supported by Iran with no compassion for the Palestinian people, who are just war fodder, and this will probably get worse before it gets better, no good blaming Murdoch and his news outlets, which I agree are just purveyors of crap, especially Fox news, Israel will continue until every hostage is accounted for.

I loved the photo on the front of the recent edition. Beauty – I thought –the good old Page 3 Girl was back! I could envisage Miss Bribie contests, Miss Surf Girl contests, and various other events, all returning. Of course, it would all be for charity, and all competitors would have to believe in world peace and feeding the world’s poor and hungry. I could see the Islander’s Photographer at Large (PAL) approaching girls on Woorim Beach seeking photos for future editions and maybe finding another “Elle” or “Jennifer” who would go on to world stardom. Perhaps an official jacket with – “I’m your PAL” on the back to avoid confusion? I might even apply for the job.

I commend the Islander’s initiative for taking this courageous step and hope it is a success. A small step for “man”-kind but a big step for Bribie!

Cheers and Say Cheese!

Dear Editor,

There’s a lot of talk about the cost of living: groceries, rent, power, petrol and so on. People are right to be upset and angry, but when it comes to deciding where responsibility lies for the problems, it’s too easy to just blame the government. But governments at any level are only part of the problem and not even the biggest part. Governments don’t set food prices – the supermarket giants do. Petrol prices are controlled by multinational oil companies, and electricity and gas prices are set by privatised ex-public utilities. Just about anywhere you look, for whatever commodity or service, prices are set by corporations, not the Government.

Those corporations have made record profits over recent years, and their executives have been rewarded with an average 14% pay increase. Meanwhile, ordinary workers are lucky to get a pay

rise that matches inflation. Company shareholders and executives used to be happy with making reasonable profits; now they grab whatever they can from all those people who are dependent on what they’re selling – and too much is never enough.

The government certainly deserves a share of the responsibility – neither of the major parties has demonstrated much economic competence. They give our underground water to corporations for nothing; they take a pitiful amount of mining royalties, and they give big tax breaks to the already wealthy. But the reality is that most economic controls are in the hands of a few mega-rich corporations and individuals, and the government can only fiddle on the sidelines. Next time you get a bill shock, think about who really has their hand in your pocket.

Dear Editor,

I am looking for an old school friend named Mary-Anne Carr who lived or lives at Woorim. If someone knows her or Mary sees this, please ring Debra on 0402720598. Thank you, Debra

Dear Editor,

In his letter in Issue 217, Tony Longland claims that I am merely repeating right-wing misinformation regarding the Israel/Hamas war that he assumes I have found in The Australian newspaper and Sky News TV channel. Without thought as to the absurdity of a later statement, he then quotes the number of ‘innocent Palestinian fatalities’ that he obtained, without question, from the Hamas ‘Ministry of Truth’. I will leave it up to your readers to decide which of these sources of information is the least trustworthy. He then asserts that Israel’s response to the terror attack by Hamas on Oct 7 was ‘insanely disproportionate’. What did he expect Israel to do as a proportionate response? Rape, murder, and take hostage the same number of Palestinians that Hamas violated? Israel sought to capture or kill only the perpetrators of this atrocity. The fact that innocent civilians were also killed is just part of the scheme hatched by Hamas’s leader, Yahya Sinwar, to make Israel look bad and to make sure that the world’s media could see the dead. Israel has made every effort to allow

Dear Editor I am wondering why you published what appears to be a political press release in the Letters to the Editor section (attached - edition 217) and with no signature or any sort of stated authorship. And, is it irony that right beside this piece is your statement: “Please keep letters to under 200 words….”

REPLY FROM THE EDITOR

To be quite honest, there was no room left in the magazine to place it anywhere else, and I didn’t have enough letters to fill the page. However, I thought it might be of interest to our readers.

Dear Editor,

civilians to leave the danger zone, and Hamas has made every effort to keep them there. As Sinwar has proclaimed, “Palestinian deaths are a necessary sacrifice; they infuse life into the veins of this nation, prompting it to rise to its glory and honour”. In other words, the more dead, the better it is, in the eyes of the world, for Hamas. I am concerned that thousands of these ‘innocent Gazans’ have been given red-carpet entry into Australia by our current government with only the barest minimum of scrutiny, if any. Will these immigrants embrace the Australian way of life and become upstanding, law-abiding citizens, or will they use our democratic system in time to impose their culture and values on us? Current demonstrations in our major cities and on our university campuses suggest that the second outcome is more likely.

In the past we have allowed our politicians to invite undesirables to become citizens of this country. Surely, we can now see that a more discerning immigration policy is called for.

The Celtic Minstrels and the Bribie Island Turtle Trackers would like to thank the RSL Board for their generosity in allowing us to hold a fundraising event in the RSL Auditorium on Sunday, June 16th, 2024. We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the RSL staff for their unwavering support of our event. Their enthusiastic assistance, meticulous venue set-up, and diligent venue cleaning were crucial to the smooth running of the event.

We are truly grateful to the nearly 100 participants who graced our event with their presence. The Celtic Minstrels were delighted to entertain the Bush dancers, the Line dancers, and the audience with their captivating

songs and tunes.

An excellent visual presentation and talk about the turtles on Bribie Island was given by one of the Turtle Trackers, who explained some of the ways in which the fundraising efforts would be used to assist the welfare of these endangered turtles.

A respectable amount was raised on the day, and we have had good feedback from the public, asking both about the turtles and about the Bush dancing classes to be held on Bribie Island, so again, we would like to thank the RSL and all our own happy workers for their contribution to the success of this event.
