A MESSAGE FROM SUSAN

Welcome to 2019! Many of you would be back into the swing of things by now, getting stuck into projects, settling back into work or study or

getting the kids back to school. You might even be laying out your plans to accomplish your New Year resolutions. I made my New Year resolution way back in 2016 when I was first elected - to make sure we can deliver a Labor Government that actually works for the people and families in Longman. A Labor Government that will boost education, training and jobs and makes sure absolutely everyone can access good quality health services. Many of

you know that I like to get out, have conversations and gather feedback on policy, not just during election time but all year round. That’s why I’ll be continuing to consult with local people, families, community groups and businesses on my commitments as well as Labor’s policies.

Susan Lamb MP Federal Member for Longman

Heading back to school with a fresh funding commitment Over the coming weeks, I’ll be out with volunteers talking to people in our community about Labor’s plan to invest over $25 million in public schools across Longman. If elected, we will deliver this funding over the first three years from 2020 to make sure our kids have an even brighter future. During the back to school period, I’ll be at some of our local markets, knocking on doors and some of our schools meeting with parents, staff and students. If you see me or a volunteer out and about, come and have a chat to us about your vision for your local school. Additional funding will mean more individual attention and staff development, but I want to hear from you about what it would mean for your school. If you want to find out how much your school would get under Labor, visit www.fairgoforschools.com.au to find out.

Students begin O-Week with a positive plan for local unis I want to make sure school leavers and mature-age students in our area have the best chance at getting into uni. That’s why I’ll be working with Labor to make sure we can deliver our commitment to make university more accessible to all people in our area. At a local level, I’ve committed to $70 million for University of the Sunshine Coast Campuses (USC) if a Shorten-Labor Government is elected. That means an extra 984 more uni places for aspiring students here Moreton Bay Region! While I’m in Canberra, my team will be at USC Caboolture’s Orientation Day speaking to students about this exciting commitment. We’ll also be putting on a free sausage sizzle for everyone and handing out stationery on the day. If you’ll be on campus Monday 18 February, make sure you drop by and say hello! Authorised by Susan Lamb MP, Australian Labor Party, Level 1, 69 King Street Caboolture Qld 4510.

Investing in great healthcare for Bribie Island As your local representative, I love spending time on Bribie Island speaking with members of our community to hear their suggestions and concerns. Time and time again, I’ve had locals tell me of their struggles accessing healthcare services when they need them – sometimes it is just not possible to get to the Caboolture Hospital. That’s why I’m so proud of the Shorten Labor Government commitment to invest in an Urgent Care Clinic for Bribie Island. Not only will this Clinic provide free, quality healthcare to people in our community, but it will also free up ambulances which won’t have to drive all the way to Caboolture Hospital as regularly. This is definitely a huge win for our area, and just yet another way Labor is standing up for the health of our community. ISSUE 80 | 01 FEB 2019

WE SALUTE OUR EMERGENCY SERVICES

W

e hear the sirens quite frequently on Bribie. It is a fact of life with the age of our population that quite often many of us are in need of their assistance. Generally, this will be the ambos (god bless their care and compassion) whose siren we hear.

Fortunately, rarely do we need all three arms of the Emergency Services plus additional support from other government and non-government sectors. Fire, particularly a raging bushfire that threatens our lives and property in this community will invoke that kind of response. And thank goodness it did! For the period from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th January this year, our local and regional emergency services

teams were put to the test. It is comforting, as a community, to know how well trained, experienced and dependable these men and women are who help us out in our time of need. Many times life and death hang in the balance and it is these well-trained professionals who more often than not succeed in making the outcome a positive one.

This issue celebrates their success on this occasion. So next time you see an ambulance, police or fire officer maybe give them a smile or say thank you on a job well done. In fact why not extend this gesture to all those who serve us so well in our community. Many of them are volunteers who are more likely than not your relative, friend or neighbour.

Our cover photo...

Wayne Brown of the QFES passed on this photo for our cover. While we have daylight shots we thought this nightime shot dramatically depicts what the men and women faced that night.

BRIBIE’S COMMUNITY SPIRIT AT ITS BEST

W

e may celebrate Australia Day as the day to recognise how wonderful it is to live in this great country, but to really appreciate the Aussie spirit just add a disaster (natural or manmade) and see how the community responds. Well, the recent January bushfire on Bribie which threatened

Banksia Beach State School and The Bribie Community Arts Centre yet again demonstrated the positive community spirit that exists on Bribie. For those of you who may have been away on holidays, shortly after midday on January 17, a multi-agency local and state government response was initiated after authorities were alerted to a bushfire off Hornsby Road at Bellara. Warm northerly winds fanned the fire Wayne Brown QFES Station Officer Bribie Island

which spread through the National Park. On Friday, the fire came close to Banksia Beach State School and the Community Arts Centre. Firefighting assets successfully protected these facilities and Sunderland Drive was closed for periods of time due to smoke and fire hazard.

Wayne Brown, Station Officer for Bribie Island’s Queensland Fire & Emergency Services, says that the performance by all those who were involved in successfully fighting the bushfire came

down to everyone just doing their jobs. He said crews worked tirelessly over the weekend to bring the fire under control, and it was a tremendous result that no life, properties or local assets were lost and a credit to the training and preparedness of all those agencies involved. Wayne praised the great work by all the agencies that were involved in the logistics of fighting the fire including the Rural Fire Service, QPS (police), QAS (ambulance), SES (State Emergency Services), Queensland Parks and Wildlife, Moreton Bay Global Care took sandwiches and cold drinks out to the police officers directing traffic.

Regional Council. As well as the great help they received from HQ Plantations. But it was instances such as when the water tank operator from Gem Life Retirement Village turned up and offered his tanker and its load of thousands of litres of water to fight the fire that really impressed him. “We had people turning up with food and drink for the men and women on the front line which was gratefully received,” he said. Wayne said that one of his team stated they had just eaten the best ham and salad roll in their life.

The Bribie Islander knows from looking at all the Facebook comments that there are far too many businesses and individuals to mention here who contributed to supporting the people on the front line. But a special shout out to Big Bun Bakery offering free coffees to those fighting the fire, Global Care who took sandwiches and cold drinks out to the police officers directing traffic, and Natasha Jones from Cornetts IGA who made heaps of delicious rolls for those men and women on the front line. To those and all the others not mentioned here who assisted with the effort a big thank you from the rest of us. You epitomise the spirit of the Bribie community.

IN A PERSIAN MARKET ON BRIBIE

By Anne Matthews, PR Director Bribie Rotary

W

hen I first heard the hauntingly beautiful “In A Persian Market” which was written by Albert Ketèlbey I was so impressed about the way the music allowed you to actually visualise a scene. As a young girl, listening to this piece of music, exotic images of veiled dancers, men in long robes wearing turbans, camels, jugglers, spices, oils & incense, flowing silks, carpets and beautiful pottery came to mind. Hence I have always loved markets and the atmosphere, the wares provided, the crowds and smells of the different foods and spices. The Rotary Markets, which are held on the second Sunday of every month in Brennan Park, Bongaree, although not Persian, are always special and exotic. Up to 80 Stalls are set up overlooking the beautiful Pumicestone Passage. The Stalls sell a variety of items including essential Our diligent Market Convenors David and Gillian Parry

oils, soaps and body lotions, pots, clothing, bric-a-brac, craftwork, plants, fruit and vegetables, books, pancakes and waffles, fishing gear, artwork etc. There is even a Stall selling Wisdom, Peace, Happiness, Tranquillity, Love and Courage - how exotic is that! And, of course, we have the Rotary Van – selling sausage sandwiches, egg and bacon rolls and drinks. The canopies of the Stalls’ gazebos provide a colourful carnival atmosphere. A red train gives rides around the park and a large jumping castle lets the children have fun. The band “Bits n Pieces” provides music that makes you want to dance and sing while you work in the Rotary Van. The crowd often dance in front of the stage or just stand and listen to our Bribie Market music. It is really satisfying to see the children – full of smiles – and the adults – all experiencing the magic of our Markets. Our delightful Market Convenors, Gillian and David Parry, organise the day and take all the bookings for the regular and casual stall holders. David and Gillian actually start their Market Sundays around 4.00am and stay on until 1.00pm. Usually 12-16 Rotarians are rostered to buy the supplies, set up, sell raffle tickets, work in the Van selling food and drinks, clean up and usher stall holders off the site. It is a busy day and it is our main revenue raising event. In fact around 35% of the funds we raise each year come from our markets. The Rotary markets are legendary on Bribie Island. So if you’re hunting for a hidden treasure, stocking up on your weekly fruit and vegetables or looking for some local art pieces, or a special souvenir, come and check us out. Who knows – you might even find a small corked bottle with a genie inside who grants 3 wishes or spot Scheherazade passing by! And across the road and beside us, the regular shops also provide lovely breakfasts and other “Persian” delights. If you would like to have a Stall at one of our Markets this year, or even become a regular Stall holder, please ring Gillian on 0406 373 218. It is not expensive and we can include insurance for the vendor.

A VERY HANDY FAMILY TO CALL

I

f you are in need of someone to help with small repairs or are undertaking a major bathroom or laundry reno then there is a family business on Bribie that’s keen to help. Owners of Mark’s Handyman Services, Mark

Mark, Robbie, and Jacinta Heustis and Mark Corrs

and Robbie Heustis along with their daughter Jacinta and her boyfriend Mark Corrs are getting quite the reputation among Bribie Island residents for their excellent workmanship and fair pricing.

The Heustis family have been settled on Bribie for a little over a decade but they haven’t always lived and worked in this state or indeed Australia. Mark, Robbie, and Jacinta spent five years in the United States while Mark was driving big rigs interstate for a US freight company. “We had the opportunity to go to the US and drive for a big transport company. Jacinta was just a baby at the time but it was a great way for us as a family to see the country and the money was pretty good which was a bonus,” said Mark. The family then returned to Australia so Jacinta could attend school here. Nowadays, the couple is focussed on growing their family business and making it work by combining each individual family members’ talents to tackle the jobs that come their way.

“Jacinta and her boyfriend Mark are a whizz at assembling flat pack furniture and cupboards,” said Robbie. “She and Mark can get the job done in half the time we could do it,” she jokes. Mark says that his father was a gifted fine woodworker producing beautiful violins. He said that he learned a lot from

LOCAL BUSINESS his father in precision woodworking. “The time spent helping my father and learning those skills has certainly benefited me in tackling the types of jobs we get here on Bribie,” said Mark. But Mark reserves his highest praise for his wife Robbie who he says produces the best tiling work he has ever seen. “In one of our renovation jobs Robbie tiled a complete bathroom and when the builder arrived he

absolutely heaped praise on the quality of her workmanship,” he said. MY

SUBJECT

STORY FIFTY YEARS OF NURSING

By Maria Boland, Sandstone Point

T

oday children are told to expect that they will have many career and job changes throughout their working life. But it wasn’t always so. Local Sandstone point resident Maria Boland has just completed 50 years of service to the nursing profession. This is Maria’s story. I was born in Cooma District Hospital NSW being number five baby of 16 (living) children and was raised and educated in the same country town and was there until I was married. Attending St Patricks local Catholic Infants School, graduating to Primary School and then it was off to Brigidine High School to complete the Intermediate Certificate. Looking back on this it was a great achievement by my parents for us to attend Private Catholic Schools as my mother insisted on “paying her way” for her children.

“There is a story inside all of us.”

Nursing is what I have ever wanted to do, I remember as far back as fourth grade having nursing in my sights. At High School we would have vocational guidance interviews and at the time it was thought I would not be able to succeed in the role of a nurse academically. How wrong they were! The beginning of my nursing career as a Registered Nurse (RN) was in a country hospital, Cooma District Hospital. By today’s standards I am considered a hospital based trained nurse as opposed to a university graduated nurse which was introduced at a much later stage after I had graduated as a registered nurse. My first role as a Registered Nurse was in the hospital where I trained in as an RN in the new ICU/CCU unit which saw a conglomeration of patients from cardiac issues, post-operative care, trauma through car accidents and many a skiing accident often smashed pelvis’ etc as the hospital was the nearest one to the snow fields. The hospital was attended by GP’s and there were not the specialists that we have today in so many different disciplines. There was a lot of skill associated with the GP’s of the day with clinical examinations and good old X Rays. Reflecting on my 50 years in nursing I’d have to say that we have come such a long way in relation to diagnosis and treatments for different disciplines in all walks of medicine. The diagnostic tools that we have today were not available or invented at that time.

Clinical nurse consultant at Calvary Hospital Canberra 1985

My final role is the one I am currently doing as the Breast Cancer Care Coordinator Clinical Nurse Consultant at Redcliffe Hospital through Metro North Hospital Health Services. I always considered myself fortunate that I was a nurse as there was always a job for you at a hospital. Throughout my career I have also managed to have four children. I was also fortunate that my husband was very supportive of my working as a nurse. At the time there was no Maternity leave so when I had my first child (daughter) I was back at work within 12 weeks. For my second and my third (Sons) I was back soon thereafter also. With the support of my husband who was a school teacher at the time we would work it so family could be mixed with work to the best of our ability at the time. Our fourth child (son) was a little different as he was our “surprise” baby, nine years after a vasectomy. At the time I was working as the

A READER’S STORY Charge Sister at Calvary Hospital Canberra in the medical ward and our son (who is currently in his thirties and a father himself) was known by one doctor as the ‘Immaculate Conception’!!!! We laugh about this now along with him! After some time off, as there was then the introduction of maternity leave for 16 weeks, I took advantage of that. When I returned to my nursing career I decided I would try a specialist area of Cancer Nursing in 1989. In that role I worked at The Canberra Hospital in all different areas associated with Cancer Care allowing me to learn and care for those diagnosed with Heamatology Cancers & Oncology Cancers. Once I got into Cancer Care I became hungry for more knowledge and considered if I increased my knowledge base I would be able to care for my patients a whole lot better. I was fortunate enough to be in an organisation that fostered learning with a culture of a learning expectation.

Cooma District Hospital

That was when our youngest was about seven years of age so I bit the bullet and made the decision I would do my first Post Graduate Certificate in Oncology and applied as a distance education student to NSW College of nursing (Australian College of Nursing). This was a major learning curve for me as it was at a university level of academia so I spent the first six weeks away from home in Sydney where I stayed at an old Children’s Hospital and attended classes from Monday to Friday for a period of six weeks. Mind you it meant I was leaving my husband and children for this period of time, however, they were very supportive of me doing this and following my dreams. CONTINUES OVER PAGE >>

MY STORY - CONTINUED First year nurse at Cooma Hospital NSW 1968

The following year I decided to look further afield for learning as I had the bug for knowledge and enrolled in La Trobe University to do my Post Graduate Certificate in Breast Cancer. I was able to do this by distance education and there were no blocks required it was all assignments etc. I continued to work full time throughout this process with the support of my Husband and family. Once that was completed I was keen to complete my Post Grad Diploma in Nursing Science (Breast Cancer). Once again another year of study and full time work supported by my family. With that one completed I thought I would see what was out the in the workforce in relation to jobs in the field I had specialised in. Once I finished the first block of study I returned home and continued to work full time and continue to do associated assignments etc that was the requirement of the course. At the end of that year I was required to go back to Sydney and complete a further six weeks of academia Monday to Friday which I did and accomplished my first university qualifications. I went back to work full time and by the beginning of the next year I decided I would also do my Post Grad Certificate in Haematology Haematopoetic Stem Cell Transplantation in Nursing. This also was done at NSW College of Nursing although the block learning was only four weeks Monday to Friday and then home for ongoing assignments and a further block at the end of the year x 4 weeks Monday to Friday to complete that Post Grad Certificate.

My Husband got on the Net and saw a job advertised at Redcliffe Hospital for Breast Cancer Care Coordinator Clinical Nurse Consultant, I applied for that role and the rest is history. I have now been in that role for eleven and a half years and remain there to this day. Reflecting on the past fifty years I am specifically proud of my Academic record. When I started nursing there was no career structure as such. It was not an expectation that a nurse enhanced her knowledge base as that was for doctors to have all the knowledge and nurses were rather restricted in their thinking capacity. Throughout the years nursing has changed incredibly with the opportunity to enhance your knowledge base as far as you want. I have taken this opportunity and ran with it and am very proud of the skill and knowledge base I currently have. COMMUNITY GROUP

35TH INTERNATIONAL BEEFSTEAK AND BURGUNDY CONVENTION

L

ast September the 35th International Beefsteak and Burgundy Convention was held in Australia’s Coonawarra wine region. A long way to drive, however, the four members of the BribiePumicestone Club #283 who attended the 3-day meeting were very happy they had made the effort to go. The weekend of 9-11 September began on Friday afternoon with an informal, complimentary

tasting as an Introduction to Wine in Coonawarra. This was followed in the evening by a meet and greet of members at the Welcome Dinner held in the Katnook Estate Barrel Shed. A herculean effort by Katnook staff to remove the barrels so that the 250+ attending members could comfortably fit in! The canapés and 3-course meal were well matched by mainly Merlot and Shiraz wines.

Saturday saw members travelling on a Garden Tour (the roses in Coonawarra/Penola are spectacular), or a History Tour which included the St. Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre, further tastings at the 8+ local vineyards ,enjoying the shop and coffee spots of near-by Penola or learning more about wine at the Wine Masterclass at Brand’s Liara, Coonawarra. That night’s Black Tie Formal Dinner, again at Katnook’s, was another feast of South Australian produce: seafood, fowl and beef matched with a variety of Cabernet Sauvignons, for which the region is well known. The weekend was wrapped up with a

Sunday Brunch in the very pleasant garden surrounding Rymill’s Coonawarra Winery. Picks of the weekend: 2008 Balnaves of Coonawarra ‘The Tally Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon’; 2008 Wynn’s Select Vineyard V&A Lane and 2017 Bowen Estate Coonawarra Chardonnay. Richard and Ellen Fell of Woorim and Lyn and Geoff Boucaut of Banksia Beach (pictured) felt that the weekend truly reflected the Beefsteak & Burgundy motto, “Good Wine, Good Food and Good Fellowship”. Enquiries on joining our local club are welcome. Contact the Secretary on 3408 4196.

MONEY TALK require documentation to support your case for hardship such as a budget, Centrelink statements if you are receiving benefits and pay information from your most recent job. Contact your creditors advise them of your situation and they will let you know how to access their hardship provisions. Also most of the major creditors provide on-line access to their hardship arrangements. If you’re being overwhelmed by your debts and don’t see any “light at the end of the tunnel” a Debt Agreement may be appropriate or even bankruptcy as a last resort. You should fully inform yourself about each of these options before locking yourself in to a particular course of action and cost. The Australian Financial Security Authority’s

(AFSA) website lists extensive information on debt management and AFSA’s video on how to avoid untrustworthy debt advisers is well worth viewing. “Credit fix’, ‘credit wash’ or ‘credit repair’ companies may offer to act on your behalf to challenge incorrect listings on your credit report. They may claim they can improve your credit rating by having negative information removed from your credit report, but genuine default listings and other correct historical information cannot be removed. Credit repair companies typically charge $1,000 or more – and sometimes upfront - to fix one listing in your credit report. Money wasted when you can arrange for any wrong information to be removed yourself for free.

If you believe your credit report contains any inaccurate, out-of-date, incomplete, irrelevant or misleading information, firstly complain to your current credit provider, the listing creditor or credit reporting body. Even if you don’t know who has put the information on your credit report, you can complain to any credit reporting body or creditor. If a credit reporting body or credit provider refuses to correct your credit file, they must provide the reasons why and evidence proving the correctness of the information. If you are not happy with the result you can contact the newly formed Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) a service previously provided by the various Financial Ombudsman services. If the credit listing is wrong, AFCA can order the creditor to ask the

credit-reporting agency to remove the listing. You will not be charged any fees for this service. As always, inform yourself before making any financial decisions. Check out moneysmart.gov.au.

REGULAR FEATURE

WHICH REALITY? B

By Nikita

onjour my lovelies, Well the holiday season is now over and the everyday becomes the everyday again. But of course beloved readers we now know that that the everyday can be the magical if we have eyes to see and ears to hear. A few weeks ago I ended having a bit of a back and forth discussion on this kind of reality with a stranger on Instagram. We’re actually friends now, but for a while there I thought this correspondent was a very immature,

arrogant person. Here’s the scenario: I had been perusing through some old James Bond clips in order to stalk the fashion that Bond and his co-stars wore – as you do – when I came upon some disturbing script. Bond was invited into an Asian beauty salon by some sort of male authority where several girls were ordered to strip the men of their shirts and wash them. With loofahs. It still grosses me out. Not the fact of the washing, it was the way the women were handled as if they were mindless robots there for sole purpose of the male’s hygiene. Yuck! Anyhow, I couldn’t just sit there and watch that and read the many comments from other male specimen

applauding the greatness of the scene. Due to the lack of female voice on this disgusting piece of evidence I decided to make a comment. Which ended up being a few comments as the rebuttals came in. I first stated that ALL women were Queens and that the fact men still think it’s ok to see females like this is sickening. In return I got told I need to get back to reality and that these girls were, ‘just spa girls’. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. Are we still basing our idea of worthiness and royalty out of outdated systems? We should know by now that class is not derived from lineage, inheritance or money. Class is much deeper than that. I suppose only they that have class revealed in

them can understand what it is. A few passionate arguments later and a mutual agreement on world peace and a place where men and women reigned equally was passed. The thing that this interesting segment taught me is that people are so ready to accept pre-ordained reality. Why would I, ‘come back to reality’, when the reality I live in makes a lot more sense, makes me happy and gives others a level of respect your world couldn’t ever give. So people, I tell you: dream big and hustle for your goals but make sure they are your own, not a copy and paste. Don’t settle for the standard, be completely your own and show it off to others.

Nikita.

OUR COMMUNITY Connor and Oscar proudly admiring their catch

they naturally chose Bribie Island as their destination of choice. David says they all had a very exciting time, hiring a pontoon boat and heading out into the passage to try their luck. “It wasn’t long before Connor caught his first fish. But we don’t know what kind it is,” said David.

EXCITED BY FIRST FISHING TRIP

W

hen Brisbane residents David Bycroft and his wife Wendy were planning to

take their grandchildren Oscar (five) and Connor (seven) on their first ever fishing adventure

The Bribie Islander has asked around and to the best of our knowledge, we can inform the Bycrofts that Connor has indeed caught a type of Leatherjacket also known as a Triggerfish. (Readers if you disagree let us know). Grandpop, as David is known by his grandkids also said that young Connor caught a bream and a stingray later in the day.

Grandpop Bycroft unimpressed with the grub he hooked

And if the grandkid’s first fishing adventure couldn’t get any better they also saw a Dugong! While Connor scored the catch of the day the same can’t be said for poor Grandpop who only managed to hook a grub! Better luck next time David. “What a great day we all had and we’ll definitely be returning to Bribie to try our luck again,” said David.

ecently we had a look at the new varieties that are appearing on the market place but let’s not forget Australia has for a long time been producing outstanding wines from traditional French German and Spanish grape varieties such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Riesling and Verdelho plus lesser known varieties such as Grenache and many outstanding fortified styles originally labelled Port, Sherry and Madeira although these terms have changed to accommodate European Rules and regulations. This time let’s have a look at some of the above and see if we can’t get you to try something you may have not tried for some time or maybe never before.

We all know about Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon but you may not be familiar with Grenache which until the early 1990’s was mainly used in the production of fortified wine but this was all about to change thanks to the success of a wine called Jacobs Creek in The U.K.

Two of the standout producers of Semillon in The Hunter Valley are McWilliams and Tyrell’s who have championed this grape variety for years. It is possible to find McWilliams Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon under $20 from time to time with a regular price of $25 and when it ages expect to pay upwards of $60 or more. MENTAL HEALTH

THERAPEUTIC ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES By Veronica Mercer, Mental Health Accredited Social Worker

“Animals are such agreeable friends—they ask no questions; they pass no criticisms.” – George Eliot

A

therapeutic approach is the lens through which counsellors addresses their clients’ problems. Broadly speaking, the therapeutic approaches of counsellors fall into two categories: behavioural and psychodynamic. Behavioural approaches are usually short-term and address the behaviour and thought patterns. The approach that I utilise is an integrative one, where I tend to blend of complimentary theories. I consider this to be flexible which allows me to tailor my approach to meet the specific needs of the individual. I always work with a client centred framework. A few years back, I was involved with an adventure camp program for children. We took the children on camps and they were involved in activities like, surfing, flying fox, high

ropes and abseiling. The motivation for the children was “Who can do this?” “I can!”. We witnessed amazing transitions with many of the children. When working with Children, therapy should incorporate emphasizing positive development, but still addressing negative issues and symptoms. Therapy sessions can focus on working toward an optimistic future, positive coping methods, and boosting the self-esteem, self-confidence, and other positive states and traits in children. Counselling with children is best explained as; • •

• •

Talk - Talking is a healthy way to express feelings. ... Play and draw Therapists use games that teach things like taking your time on schoolwork or other tasks. ... Do activities Therapists might teach lessons about feelings, coping skills, or facing fears. ... Practice new skills. ... Solve problems.

Some of the activities that I like to use with younger

people are Art Therapy, Play Therapy, Music Therapy, Animal Therapy and other activities that assist in building selfesteem and confidence. These two aspects are always adversely affected in people who experience a mental health issue, child or adult. I recently took a few of my young client’s horse riding with the aim of building upon their confidence and to put in place the coping strategies, which we had been working on during counselling. Animal therapy is widely recognised as having huge benefits for children emotional, mentally, physically and socially. I recently held a HUGE Garage

Sale to raise fund to allow me to undertake more activities with children who are experiencing anxiety and depression. I had some much donated my garage and yard were overflowing. I would like to thank all those amazing people who donated and turned up on the day and bought items and tickets in the raffles. A huge thank you to Natasha, Gary, Thomas and Rianna Barwick for their help and support, I could not have done it without them. We raised a large amount of money, which will be used to provide therapeutic activities to the young people I work with and who are experiencing a mental health issue. Cheers Veronica

Cool Dogs My readers already know that dogs are cool! But Summer is here, and dogs succumb to heat stroke even more easily than people do. A dog’s cooling system differs from ours. Dogs do not sweat (as they’re covered in fur), but instead pant, relying on evaporative cooling from their airways. In our slice of paradise, the air is humid and evaporative cooling is not so

So, we must help them stay cool. They need plenty of cool, fresh water to drink, and you can try adding ice cubes to help keep their body temperature down. Air con and fans are great. Swimming pools work well too, but ensure your dog knows where the steps are. As with children, never leave your dog in the car during Summer, as they can become heat affected extremely quickly in our conditions.

NUTRITION IN DOGS – Part One

One question I often get asked is what I feed my dog. My last dog was a bull mastiff x who lived for 16 years. Giant breeds life expectancy is 8 – 10 years. He died of natural causes and I believe the reason for his healthy longevity was his diet. There are many confusing information about dog nutrition. Its difficult to work out what’s right for us let alone our four legged friend. First let’s start; dog obesity rate has doubled over the past 20 years. It is estimated that approximately 41% of all dogs are overweight or obese. This is due to two main factors over eating and insufficient exercise. Signs of obesity: • when ribs cannot be felt • loss of an obvious waist

• having to loosen the collar • difficulty walking • slow movement • shortness of breath • bad temper • sleeping more than usual. There are health risks such as heart disease, skeletal and breathing problems, skin disease, diabetes and arthritis. According to Hills Science Diet a 28g piece of cheese given to a 10 kg dog is equivalent to humans eating 3.5 hamburgers. Other interesting fact about nutrition and animal behaviour, in the 1930’s Dr Pottenger demonstrated a marked increase in aggression in cats that were fed cooked food and also had a higher level of aggression towards their handlers. The behaviour changed when they were put on a raw diet. Happy training, Yvonne

AUSTRALIAN PELICAN PELECANUS CONSPICILLATUS

P

By Marj Webber

robably the most observed and loved birds on Bribie Island are the iconic Australian Pelicans. They are likely to be seen wherever there is water and the Pumicestone Passage is one of their favourite haunts. With a wingspan of 2.3-2.5 m and a length of 1.6-1.8 m and weighing 4-6.8 kg they are extremely hard to miss. They are Australia’s largest flying bird. Their bills are longer than any other bird in Australia being 36-46 cm in length. Attached to their bills are pink gular pouches which can hold

up to 13 litres of water. At the end of their bills are large, yellow, claw like hooks thought to help in the management of their prey. They belong to the Order Pelecaniformes which is a group of birds with four toes joined by webbing and one toe behind. Nostrils are almost closed which prevents water entering their airways when diving for food. Because of this, pelicans breathe through their mouth. Their calls are a series of grunts and deep croaks. They fly with their heads pulled back, soaring with wings outstretched and using thermals to attain great

heights sometimes up to 900 m and often travelling in V shaped formation. If necessary they can remain soaring for up to 24 hours and can travel several hundred kilometres in one flight. Males are larger than females, but their markings are similar. There are seven species of Pelicans in the world but only one in Australia. Australian Pelicans are also found in PNG, Western Indonesia

and some of the Pacific Islands. They can be found all over Australia even in the arid regions where there is water. Pelicans begin breeding at 2-3 years and will nest at almost any time of the year depending on weather conditions and rainfall. If there is enough rain to fill the waterholes in the outback, pelicans will fly in their thousands to reach their favoured breeding grounds. Lake Eyre when it fills with water is a favoured destination for a multitude of pelicans and other birds. Large colonies form at these sites and the breeding begins. Each year Pelicans choose a new mate for the season. For a short time, parts of their bills turn blue while parts of the gular pouches become red and yellow. Mating rituals take place when the females select their mates for the season. Up to eight posturing and fighting males follow a female until there is only one male left. He is then taken to the nest site and remains for the season. Nests are just scrapes on the ground decorated with whatever is handy at the

time. Two to three large white eggs are laid which are incubated by both male and female parents. Unlike other birds, pelicans incubate their eggs on their webbed feet. When hatched the chicks are naked, quite helpless and need to be protected from strong sunlight. The first chick hatched is larger than its siblings. It takes most of the food and will sometimes attack and kill the smaller nestlings. Adults are able to tolerate extreme heat as they have a built in cooling system. When it becomes very hot, they open their bills and vibrate their pouches which have a cooling effect. Eggs and chicks can be lost if parents endure too many disturbances. Chicks fledge at about 12 weeks. When the youngsters leave the nests they form crèches with up to 100 birds for several months. During this time, they learn survival and flying skills. Sometimes when the lakes are flooding in the outback pelicans leave Bribie Island for a short time to breed there while

the water remains. Flocks of Pelicans often follow fishing boats expecting tit bits to be thrown overboard. Fishermen on the foreshore are another target for the ever-hungry Pelicans. Their diet consists mostly of fish, but they also eat crustaceans, squid, insects, turtles and sometimes the young of other birds. I have watched them forming circles and herding fish into a group then feasting on a trapped seafood smorgasbord. This is a wonderful sight to see and reminds me of a water ballet in progress. Pouches are used like nets to scoop up their prey which is manipulated till the heads are pointing downwards enabling them to be swallowed. When the pouches become filled with water, they press them against their bodies, and this allows the water to flow out.

Other threats are habitat destruction, feral predators and litter left by fishermen, holiday makers and residents. It is very sad to see a pelican

tangled in a discarded fishing line or choking on a plastic bag. Even so, the Pelican population is increasing. Life expectancy is between 10 and 25 years.

Pelicans can be affected by chemicals in the fish they eat which can cause loss of egg production. Diving for Squid

HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY my father’s eye I could do no wrong and he said the nails could stay. Ybona has been invited on TV, and been published in several London newspapers. “Once it started,” she declares, “It snow balled and I just could not bear to cut them. “I don’t really understand all that fuss, because until recently nobody had taken any notice of my nails and they have been this long for decades. You know what it is – they can’t quite figure out, that a woman my age should be such a fool. But I don’t have them for other people. It’s for me.

Ybona’s mother said, “Cut them.” Ybona said, “No.” 47 years later, the nails on her left hand are still over 10” long, and she still enjoys the little extra ‘zip’ they give to her life.

“And early in the 20th century it was the same at school. We used to write with pens and nibs in those days - none of this biro business – and the teachers would never give me the nibs. They’d just say, ‘You write with your nails.” And when they decided enough was enough, they wrote to my father. But in

The children too, have always loved Ybona’s extraordinary nails. And she adds, “The grandchildren think it’s the beginning and the end of life. Oh, they’re so proud of me! “I can understand people thinking my nails are terrible, especially women. But they should not say that to my face. Men seem to like them more.” “Over the last five years I have thought that it is ridiculous and that maybe I should cut them off. But my children say, ‘No Mum, it won’t be you without your nails.’ ” I tell Ybona that her sense of humour and proportion

REGULAR FEATURE Ybona’s favourite story though is the one when she was alone in Cyprus in 1975. “I was sitting outside by the hotel swimming pool and a lot of children were about. Fascinated, they kept circling right around me, but would not come close or speak to me. “Then the mothers came out and asked if they could take photos. And after that the children came near, sat by me, touched the nails and played with them. “At last one little girl about six, looked up at me innocently and whispered,

This ability to appreciate how she might look to the rest of the world, is one of her most engaging qualities. She wiggles her left hand for inspection, revealing the curling, tentacle-like growths that sprout from her fingers, each one beautifully kept, manicured, and shining with 5 coats of pink nail polish both on top and underneath, as they are easier to clean and keep clean that way. Five decades later, with three grown up children as well as five grand children, Ybona and her husband, Eric, live in the small English village of Balsal near Coventry. And far from objecting to his wife’s strange appearance, he seems to love the nails even more than Ybona herself, and is totally bewildered by the attention paid to her.

Ybona recalls a vivid memory. “We were on holiday in Cyprus when the war broke out. We were airlifted, jumping in and out of lorries, being pushed from pillar to post, from one transport to another. You name it – it happened to us. And suddenly in the pitch dark with guns and bombs popping all around us, Eric called out, ’Darling, be careful of your nails.’

“As if it mattered. We could have been blown up at any moment.” Ybona assures me that she has no trouble doing her own housework, as the nails on her right hand are almost bordering on normal. And when she uses her left hand she simply turns it sideways.

“Like a cat’s claws, aren’t they,” she explains, laughing. “You might not think so, but I am a very, very shy person. You know how

CHRISTMAS

CLOSURE ISSUES

As most residents would be aware there were numerous complaints from people about the items deposited outside our gates after Christmas. We would like to advise that we advertised our closure over a 3 month period including in the Busy Fingers article in the October, November and December issues of this paper and we also posted signs in the shop itself. Many of our residents knew we were closed and kept their donations until we re-opened and we thank them sincerely for their cooperation and patience. Our break was from Monday 24th December for 2 weeks re-opening on Monday 7th January and in all our advisements we asked people not to leave any

donations during this period. We advised that we would arrange to pick up any items that you had as soon as we returned if you were unable to bring them down yourselves after Monday 7th January. The volunteers who donate so much of their time in making this a successful fundraising organisation deserve a well-earned break at the end of the year. Our staff also require a break after the full on month of December which is always hectic, surely noone objects to that. Since erecting the fence around the property, which you may recall was forced upon us by the continual acts of theft and the many occasions of rubbish dumping which were causing unaccounted for expenses, money that would have been used for the benefit of the island. We have closed the gates over all Public Holidays and afterhours, we do have a lovely

volunteer who opens the gates for 2 hours on Sunday mornings for anyone who needs to donate goods over the weekend, but the gates are always closed otherwise. Some of the excellent condition items left over the Christmas break were either stolen or ruined due to the rain especially mattresses, cushions and pillows. But there were also bags of household rubbish dumped there, which was very disappointing, these bags were opened by our volunteers, this is not a pleasant job. During the first week we had to arrange for numerous industrial green bins to be emptied and the council sent a truck to assist us for which we sincerely thank them. We thank the volunteers and staff for all their hard work in dealing with this issue during their first week back.

FOR FUTURE REFERENCE: PLEASE BE ADVISED that the footpath outside our gates is the responsibility of the Moreton Bay Regional Council, and leaving items on the footpath is classified as illegal dumping and on the spot fines can apply. Both the council and Busy Fingers do not want this to occur so please refrain from leaving items once the gates are closed, once again, it appears we will be forced to purchase and erect more signs!

BARGAINS The shop is continuing to have sales on different items which will be advertised daily on the blackboard as you enter

the shop. We currently have plenty of furniture, kitchen items, books and a wide variety of clothing so please check out the bargains when you are visiting the shop. SPEED LIMIT Please be aware that our speed limit in the car park is 5 kph, the last few days have seen near misses with cars and our volunteers working in the shed. It is very dangerous when customers are not driving slowly with due care and attention, so we are arranging another speed bump – a further expense.

REQUEST FOR DONATIONS If you are a member of an island club or association and require assistance please let us know. We try to assist all non for profit associations and sporting clubs, we also assist the Police, SES, VMR and the BI Hospice. Our President Karen is quite happy to come along to your club and present our aims and goals and how your club can apply for assistance. TRAVEL

THE LONG WAY ROUND TO BRIBIE!

boggling, I was told by Ginger, who filled me in as I stayed home sick and missed out.

Episode 24 On the way to Ulludulla with Sabine Von Graz

A

s I mentioned in the last episode we decided to slowly wind up our adventure on the road and start a new one by moving to Bribie Island! This would have meant heading East, but wait, there was still my birthday surprise we had to pick up at Ulludulla, just South of Sydney. Our route took us first from Charleville to Bourke, with the side of the road littered by hundreds of roos, emus and goats, occasionally slowing us down to walking speed, when some live ones would suddenly appear from the bushes and stroll leisurely across the highway in bright daylight. 52

From Bourke we headed to Cobar and Forbes in NSW, catching up with some of Richard’s clients, and to check out the amazing Parkes Dish. But the attraction we loved the most was the whispering installation, which was put there to drive home the point of how a radio telescope actually works. There are two mini dishes one hundred meters apart, where you can stand in one…whisper some words…and the person standing in the other dish, far away, can clearly hear what you said! It sounds good, you think, but actually experiencing it is even better and mind

The Bribie Islander

However all was good again once we headed to Cobar, where we loved our nightly ritual of walking up a little mountain to be rewarded by a sunset viewing over a working copper mine. It was fascinating to see those entrance tunnels so far and small below us with trucks and machinery appearing and disappearing into the mountain. A little bit of sadness crept in on our part, knowing we were leaving the outback behind, and diving back into the hustle and bustle of life on the coast and cities. Still aiming for Ulludulla, we had to do the big hike with the ‘big ‘ rig over the Dividing Range, leaving us feeling rather car sick

from all those curves. Ginger, probing Richard at every possible rest stop to lift his secret of the huge present being shipped to Ulludulla, found out that the present was something I collected… The only collectable item I could think off were small orange Buddhas, which were hard to come by in the outback, and as such luckily kept a lid on my collecting habit. However in Darwin we went through a huge store filled with Buddhas and there we saw some life size ones!! I know it was me leading Richard down that garden path, but now that we were moving back into a three bedroom unit on Bribie Island, where for Gods sake could you put a life size statue of a Buddha!

As Richard mentioned on the due day, it would take a while to pick up, assemble, and load the present onto the Dodge… Ginger’s suspicion was that he could not get an orange one to match my small collection, but rather a pink one to match the huge pink bow and ribbon they went to buy!!! Once Richard had the present up and ready, he phoned, and I had to sit at the back window of the caravan to wait for the black Dodge to appear at the boom gate down the other end. While Ginger and I were waiting and complaining how long it took… I noticed a little white car stopping at the gate. I pointed out to Ginger that this car looks a bit like the Rocket, a car I loved but had to give away once Ginger was born, in exchange for a more sensible car, which could fit a baby and a pram. The Rocket, I told her, (a Nissan 300 ZX) got its name as it made lots of noise when I was driving it, due to holes in the exhaust. It also had a few minor faults with the windscreen wipers, heater and speedo out of action, the drooping headlining occasionally blocking the driver’s view, and sometimes catching fire under the bonnet when

waiting at traffic lights… But I just loooved that car – it was so imperfectly me. As this white car came closer I said to Ginger:” This is just like the Rocket!” and then I saw Richard driving the car with a big pink bow on top it!!! What a relief, it was not a life size Buddha after all!!!! And how exciting to have a new Rocket in my life! A true sign of love and dedication from my carloving hubby!

Cobar Mine

in front of me. I sat right up his clacker, when we all of a sudden got lost through Sydney, and to top it off the brake lights on his van started to play up!

My mind on full alert and my body close to a heat stroke I was driving with all windows down, while I was targeted by other drivers furiously trying Continues Over Page >>

I think he enjoyed the secret search over the years just as much I did the present! Off I went for a test drive, and like the original Rocket the aircon was not working. Never mind, we took the targa top off and had all the fresh air we needed! It also had the sound of the original Rocket emphasized by the 80’s music blasting from the rather perfect stereo system. Now of course it was up to me to drive the Rocket home, and with no navigation system on hand, I could not afford to lose Richard driving the rig

HISTORY

BURY ME DEEP ON BRIBIE ISLAND By Barry Clark, Bribie Island Historical Society

Why can’t you be buried on Bribie Island? Although there is a well maintained Memorial Garden for cremated ashes to be interred, there is no Cemetery on Bribie Island. Well ….there is no longer a Cemetery on Bribie, but you may be surprised to learn that there have been two Cemeteries on Bribie Island over the years. You may be even more surprised to know that there have only been two official burials, one in each of the two Cemeteries ……and that only one body still remains in the ground. Let me explain how this all came about, and how some recent discoveries have revealed artefacts from the very first burial on Bribie Island 84 years ago. There would of course have been many Aboriginal deaths on the land that is now Bribie Island over thousands of years, but 6000 years ago the whole of Moreton Bay was dry land, and the coastline and sea was over 50 klms away from here. The coastline of Queensland has only been this way for about 1000 years, and Bribie has probably only been an island for about 250 years. Early settlers could walk and swim

56

www.thebribieislander.com.au

their cattle across from the mainland. The pioneer Queenslander Tom Petrie, who supervised Queensland’s first Aboriginal Reserve on Bribie Island in 1877, wrote in his “Reminiscences of Early Queensland” of hearing the morning and evening Wailing for the Dead. How relatives would gather to cry and old women would cut their heads with Yam digging sticks, and younger women would cut their thighs with sharp flint stones until their legs were covered in blood. After any death the Aboriginal Camp would be immediately relocated and the trees around would be marked to show what had taken place. There have been so many ways of dealing with death and the departed in all civilisations over time. Around the world today many different religions and cultures conduct their various practices and customs related to the dead. Christian religions generally cremate or bury their dead in official Cemeteries and Graveyards.

ESTABLISHING BONGAREE TOWNSHIP Soon after the new Township of Bongaree was gazetted and surveyed on Bribie in 1912 ,reserved were established for various public

purposes, including a Cemetery Reserve in 1920. The Cemetery site was simply an area marked on the Map, situated a long way from the small settlement population of Bongaree. Although Bribie became a popular holiday destination for many thousands of visitors over the next 15 years, and the resident population grew to almost 100 people, the Cemetery (Ref R576) was not used until 1935.

ALBERT SWEETING Albert Sweeting was an interesting man who was the very first to be buried on Bribie in 1935. He was born in Luton in Bedfordshire UK in 1878 , worked as a Printer, married Mabel Graves and they had two daughters. In World War 1 Albert enlisted in the Army and fought in Europe, but after the War he left his wife

and eldest daughter and migrated to Australia with his girlfriend and youngest daughter. They settled in Brisbane where Albert worked for the Government until the Depression when he moved to live on Bribie Island. He had a small farm at Woorim near Ocean Beach where he grew vegetables and lived in “The Cabin” with a small shop. He was not a well man, and after months of sickness he made it clear that he wanted to be buried on Bribie Island when the end came. In October 1935, just two months before he died, he wrote a letter to his daughter and family in Brisbane. In 1935 the world was in the grip of the Great Depression, Hitler was in Germany, Mussolini was in Italy and the threat of Civil War in Spain made the possibility of another World War very real. Here is a very brief extract of his letter to his daughter in 1935 (see letter in box)…….

FIRST BURIAL ON BRIBIE Albert Sweeting passed away just two months later on December 17th 1935, (he was actually aged 59 according to his birth records) but when it came to arranging his funeral and burial on Bribie, nobody knew where the site of the gazetted Bongaree Cemetery actually was. The Lands Dept. provided a Map, and with a compass and measuring tape a group of volunteers ,under the direction of honorary Councillor Bill Shirley, cleared a track through the thick bush for over a mile to the area shown on the Map as the site of the Cemetery reserve. This was about one and half kilometres from where todays road goes down to the Car Park at Red Beach. In 1935 this was thick impenetrable bush, teeming with mosquitoes, snakes, goanna’s, birdlife, kangaroo and Emu. A grave was dug, a wooden coffin made, a metal plate engraved and

My Dearest Edie, Jack and kiddies

Here is the very much delayed letter but you must not think I’m ungrateful of anything like that because I’ve not written before, but you know full well that I am dead beat each night after I’ve finished work etc that I have not got the energy to sit and write. I am going to sell groceries, soft drinks, fruit and vegetables, fishing gear also taking orders for worms for bait and it is going to hit the Kiosk a tidy old bump. I have had a few nasty “attacks” recently and once had to be led in and stretched out. It is the worst attack I have had for nearly two years and it left me in a rather weak condition. As luck

a simple wooden cross constructed. In 1935 Bribie had both an Anglican and Methodist church but no resident Ministers, as Church Services were only held once a month. Reverend T. Gilbert was organised to come over on the Steamship from Redcliffe and Bill Shirley made arrangements for a Services to be conducted at St. Peters Church, with one of his transport trucks to serve as a Hearst. This first Funeral and Burial on Bribie took place on Christmas Eve 1935 and was attended by most Bribie residents and many hundreds of holiday visitors. The mourners walk the long hot sandy track

would have it I had no spirits or anything like that in the house, the last I had gave to someone who was ill, but that’s always the case, there’s never any when you are in need of it yourself. What do you think of the War Jack? It is certainly looking black and I guess it won’t end until they send for me, and then if the Italians know I’m coming they will “throw in” !. But joking apart I would not be surprised to be called up in the event of Britain coming in. If only the Military Officials will look after my business I will willingly go and do my bit once more and if anything should happen to me—well I’ve had a good innings and I’m now 57 and cannot grumble.

Your Loving Dad.

to the clearing where a graveside service was held, and Albert Sweetings coffin was lowered into the ground and a wooden cross marked the site. Nobody went near this inaccessible site for a long time, and no other burials ever took place.

BONGAREE CEMETERY CLOSED Nineteen years later in 1954 the Dept. of Lands decided to declassify the Cemetery site and contacted Albert Sweetings family asking if they would like to relocated the body. After 19 years, with the grave site still inaccessible and the cross long since eaten by white ants, they decided to leave Albert in the ground undisturbed. The Bongaree Cemetery site near Red Beach officially closed and removed from the gazetted survey in 1954. It was then decided to gazette a new Cemetery site away from the water and beaches, accessible from the Ocean Beach road to Woorim. This new Cemetery site was gazetted in the bush, north of First Avenue, where Armitage Street and McMahon streets are today. The first and only person to be buried there was that of Frank Bernard Lee in 1964, a prominent Bribie Continues OVER Page...

of the old Cemetery site on which Frank Lees grave had been, and built their Printing business there, which is still thriving today.

FRANK BERNARD LEE

In recognition of the late Frank Lee they erected a memorial Pergola in the grounds of the business which remained there for many years until extensions were carried out..

Frank Bernard Lee was the only person to be buried in this new Cemetery site over several years, and in 1977 the Caboolture Shire Council decided to develop a new Industrial Park on land in that area. This second Cemetery site was once again to be closed and withdrawn. The Lee family were contacted and they decided to relocate the body and have it reinterred at Gympie. The Industrial Land was then developed and subdivided, and in 1983 Victory Press purchased part

RECENT DISCOVERIES

Sweeting Coffin Plate

It seemed to have taken over 50 years for the appropriate Authorities to realise that putting a coffin 6 foot under in the sand anywhere on Bribie Island was likely to be impacted by the high Water Table and risk of pollution.

Further digging revealed some other items which appear to be handles or pins from the coffin. There was no evidence of the original Wooden Cross or any other items from the burial

Apart for the first burial in 1935, and the second almost 30 years later in 1964, there was no action regarding grave sites or burials until just recently in 2015.

This recent chance discovery brings my story about earlier Cemetery sites on Bribie into real life and becomes an important artefact of Bribie’s fascinating past.

A man working with a Metal Detector in remote bushland near South Point came upon a broken and corroded engraved metal plate.

The Historical Society continue to research and document the rich history of this Island and you can view some more interesting stories on our Blog Site at http://bribieislandhistory. blogspot.com or contact us on bribiehistoricalsociety@gmail.com

MOVIE REVIEWS

THE MULE

Is it possible to see a movie about an elderly horticulturalist working for a Mexican drug cartel all the while showing us his journey in a film that simply ambles along ever so quietly? Well, that is exactly what Clint Eastwood’s “The Mule”

GREEN BOOK The film Green Book is a true gem -poignant, timely and truly relevant. It is a film that will surprise, challenge and inspire you. Based on a true story, the two main characters are played brilliantly by Mahershala Ali as Dr

has to offer its viewers. Based on a true story, this is a film directed and produced by Eastwood who also leads the cast as Earl Stone based on the story of the renowned Leo Sharp, a drug mule. We meet Stone when his is well into his advanced years after he can no longer keep his horticultural business afloat. He is depicted as a doddery,

stooped and emotionally burdened man who reverses his fortunes by “stumbling” into drug running. With varying degrees of success, Eastwood’s character is portrayed as not only naive and vulnerable but also as worldly and astute. Although slow moving, the film provides its viewers with the message that it is never

too late to re-prioritise what is important in life; to accept personal responsibility for what we do in life and to be forgiven for our many omissions in life. Could this be the last of Eastwood’s work in the film industry? If so, he leaves us with a message that is as simple as it is compelling.

Don Shirley a refined, highly educated and accomplished pianist with Viggo Mortensen as Tony Lip (Vallelonga) who plays his crass, unsophisticated and socially naive assistant hired to drive Shirley on concert tour in the Deep South during the 1960’s where a Green Book of safety was sorely needed. The film’s director effectively contrasts Shirley’s refined, stoic

and at times aloof character with Lip’s brash, aggressive and often confronting racial commentary. The script gives its audience a real taste of the subtle as well as the harshly overt racism faced by those of colour in the Deep South in the 60’s. Despite their differences, Shirley and Lip form a deeply respectful and caring alliance which is as moving as it is inspiring.

This is a film not to be missed at a time in history when we are challenged to counter biased, racist and bigoted commentary with reminders that our shared humanity is what should unite rather than separate us. Stay for the credits and enjoy seeing the real Dr Shirley and Tony Lip while taking note of who was involved in writing this film.

YOUR ZODIAC FORECAST FOR F E BR U A R Y

By Oscar Cainer

AQUARIUS

(January 21 February 19) You may have grown so used to working at breakneck speeds, that you don’t even realise how fast you’re moving. So, just as you need to be aware of the change of pace when you arrive in town after having driven along the motorway, you need to be vigilant. February brings the annual Aquarian New Moon, plus Mars converging with Uranus before your ruler changes signs. It creates a sense of urgency and a need to ratify recent progress. Just make sure you work at a pace that feels comfortable to you. (AUSTRALIA LEGAL TEXT Must carry this legal text once on the page)

he month of February has an air of impatience about it. With the Aquarian New Moon bisecting the relationship between Saturn (the realist) and Neptune (the dreamer), sacrifices are worth making as long as they’re focused on positive advancement. As Mars converges with Uranus in Aries (for the last time until 2096), it brings both a desire to revolutionise lifestyles, and a sense of frustration… as if change can’t come soon enough. But the important values of stability and security can be reinforced, in radical and innovative ways.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) ‘Once more unto the breach dear friends’ cried Henry V in Shakespeare’s famous play. It’s a great rallying call to action, unless you’ve been dealing with ‘breaches’ for too long. You’ve had Uranus, the change-maker, in Aries for the best part of nine years. (Even Shakespearean plays don’t last that long!). Yet, as your ruler converges with Uranus for the last time in your sign, take advantage of the opportunity it presents. You can take actions now that will echo with positivity into your future. Move decisively, and you’ll be richly rewarded. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) If love and hate are two sides of the same coin surely they should trade as equal currency? Yet, with more than seven billion of us on the planet, it seems that there’s more loving than hating going on than has ever happened before!

GEMINI (May 22 - June 22) If there’s one thing we change more frequently than our thoughts about what we should be doing, it’s how sure we feel about our past decisions. There are times when self-doubt plagues us until the moment we triumph. In February, you’ll feel a strong urge to instigate a change. But it may not be easy to definitively decide what you need to do. This is where your emotional sensitivity, rather than your intellectual objectivity will help. And, fortunately that’s just what your ruler’s convergence with Neptune provides.

Although the arrival of Mars in your sign brings energy, there will be frustrations to deal with too. But Venus’ movements have a softening effect. If you remember to make allowances for the presence of an invisible helping hand, you can take significant steps towards achieving a long-held goal.

REGULAR FEATURE CANCER (June 23 - July 23) It’s only with experience that we learn that walking on clouds often leads to a fall. So, most of the time, we tend to keep our hopes rooted in reality. Yet, the New Moon, perfectly bisecting the relationship between stable Saturn and ephemeral Neptune, indicates the benefits of you rethinking this philosophy. What was once a flight of fantasy has become a sustainable possibility. February’s Supermoon suggests that you can realise a dream. You may not be able to triumph alone, but with Venus opposite your sign, you won’t have to! LEO (July 24 - August 23) February’s New Moon, occurring opposite your sign, suggests either the beginning of a new relationship with someone special, or the chance to reset a liaison which has turned sour. The timing of this celestial event, as it arrives mid-way between Saturn and Neptune’s link, empowers you with positive energy, and increases your impressive intuitive powers. You’ll find that you’re able to communicate skilfully, and have awareness of other peoples’ needs without overriding your own. Being open-hearted brings rewards this month.

VIRGO (August 24 September 23) Such is the power of the Supermoon in your sign that I’m hoping you have a superhero outfit to hand. You might well find yourself wearing the metaphorical equivalent of pants over your trousers this month! Yet, rather than trying to master the street art of ‘parkour’ and leaping over rooftops, you’d be better off focusing your energy on your ability to vault over any psychological obstacles. Mercury’s convergence with Neptune, opposite your sign, suggests you have inspiring back-up assistance too.

your opposite sign, it brings passion and intensity to your relationships. This biennial occurrence highlights vulnerabilities in key associations and brings the potential to reset expectations so that deeper, more realistic communication can take place. If you find yourself facing denial and defiance, respond with kindness and understanding. With Venus converging with your modern ruler Pluto, if you share your heart-felt values, surprising, yet powerful alliances can form.

LIBRA (September 24 October 23) It often feels as if change is foisted upon you; or that when you initiate progress, you have to work hard to convince other people to accept your ideas. But the great disrupter, Uranus, is in its final month opposite your sign. So, although you have to entertain another of its Mars conjunctions in the part of the sky representing your closest partnerships, this cosmic encounter can end on a very positive note. Stay true to your beliefs, and listen to other peoples’ ideas and you’ll uncover a wealth of exciting opportunities.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) People often say that Sagittarians rely on luck to make their way through life. It’s true that when you’re in a positive frame of mind, you can dance on a pinhead and avoid the pitfalls that the rest of us tumble into. So, although Venus leaves your sign this month, you won’t be bogged down in any long goodbyes. As the Supermoon appears, just as the Sun forms a creative and powerful relationship with your ruling planet, Jupiter, it brings energy and creates an environment in which fortune can be harnessed. Set your sights high!

PISCES (February 20 March 20) A Supermoon opposite your sign isn’t the only celestial event that makes this month special. February marks the beginning of your birthday season… and the Sun’s return to your sign always brings gifts your way. But it’s the links made by your ruling planets that make this a particularly exciting time. You’re being empowered to discover vibrant ways to define and express important emotional issues, which enable you to enhance your key relationships. It’s not just your birth that needs celebrating… but your future too!

Saturn, your ruler, in a very encouraging relationship with Neptune (which, after several peaks over the year, won’t happen again until 2031). Venus, the planet of love, moves into your sign where it converges with your ruler before linking with transformational Pluto. But this exceedingly positive news comes with a caveat: just as it takes years to grow into our potential, you’re playing a long game now. Wonderful change is making its way into your life. You just need to be patient. There’s great news in your prediction for the next few weeks! Call 1900 959 005.

REPORT W

By Michael & Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours

elcome to our beach report from Michael & Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours.

We have a total fire ban on Bribie, new fire breaks are being bulldozed for the first time that’s how serious this is. The 22km long inland track is rough with patches of very soft sand, not a journey for the faint-hearted, the occasional bone head has further damaged the

track crossing track to track for no reason, the 30kpm speed limit will seldom be reached. A three-kilometre journey gets you to Gallagher Point campsite and eight kilometres sees you at Poverty Creek camp site. We’ve recovered rolled over vehicles, and with damaged radiators and clutches having given up under the heavy going. Recently a Mitsubishi Magna was bogged 100 meters up the track, and a Hyundai Excel was 6km up the track.

ow, what a great month of weather we have just had. Couldn’t have asked for a more perfect run of weather over the Christmas holiday break. Hot sunny days, crystal clear water and light winds. This perfect weather and hot days meant plenty of time in the water. As the temperature of the water warms up certain species of nasties become more active and prevalent.

Irukandji jellyfish, blueringed octopus, stonefish, fireweed, and many other nasties can inhabit these local waters. At this time of year, we have seen an increase in Irukandji stings on the Fraser Coast. These tiny killers of the oceans are usually under 2cm in size and can inflict painful and possibly life-threatening injuries. The symptoms of an Irukandji jellyfish sting are not immediate and may take 5 to 45 minutes after the initial sting. If vinegar is

We are now in the middle of an extremely dry and hot summer, and hopefully, soon we get some decent rainfall events. REGULAR FEATURE quite a good chance of possibly a couple of cyclones developing around mid-February through to the end of March. Over the last few weeks the massive bait schools have moved into the bay and behind the big bait schools have been longtail tuna, spotted school and Spanish mackerel, cobia, sharks, barracuda and marlin. The other day just northwest of Bulwer there was about 4 or 5 marlin working underneath a big ball. We jigged mackerel for about 3 hours from the school. The cobia, cod, and reefies have also been on

the bite throughout the bays coffee rock patches and ledges. Out off the cape dolphin fish, tuna, mackerel, wahoo and marlin getting taken from the cape to the wide Caloundra shelf areas. Up the passage, the flattys, whiting, cod, jacks, javelin fish and muddies are firing with most areas holding fish. Down around the Bongaree area of the passage there has been a lot of moses perch and grass sweetlip on the coffee rock. Also some great big duskys and summer whiting on the weed and coffee rock

YOUR SAY Establishment and Moreton Bay Regional Council to seriously consider the ratepayers, voters, local residents and visitors who come for the peace and quiet of Bribie Island and its surrounds. We have shared our peaceful paradise with the Sandstone Point Hotel, which is a popular venue, but now it is time to think of the ratepayers and the residents and leave the rest of the year for others to enjoy in the way they have for years gone by. You may wish to lodge an objection or supporting submission to the Development Applications number (DA/31643/2016/VCHG/1) and submit it by the 8th Feb 2019 to PO Box 159 Caboolture Qld 4510 or mbrc@ moretonbay.qld.gov.au Kind Regards, F Falvey, Bongaree

RANTS & RAVES

Dear Editor, It has been bought to my attention that the Sandstone Point Hotel has recently erected the required sign advising locals of their proposal to increase the number of Major Outdoor Concerts from 9 up to 24 per year. I thought the local population may not know about this as I hadn’t noticed the sign, so I drove past today looking for it. No wonder I hadn’t seen it before, it is on the fence to the paddock where the temporary car park is made for Event Parking. The writing was so small that it was not visible from the road and there was nowhere to safely pull over to read it. I think you would have to walk across the grassy area between the road and the fence to have any chance of reading it. The Development Application proposes to increase the number of Major Concerts from 9 per year to 12 per year and it also requests that consecutive Major Concerts be treated as one Concert. So a long weekend could have 2-3 days of Concerts, which would only be counted as one and therefore increase the concerts to 24 per year. I know I am not alone in being concerned about the traffic congestion on Bribie Island Rd becoming worse than it currently is. On event days we always see the illuminated sign which warns of an EVENT - EXPECT DELAYS and the traffic is horrendous. Too bad for the unfortunate locals who plan a celebration of their own on a day that coincides with a concert. Friends and relatives prefer to take a rain check than to battle the traffic. Surrounding residence, which includes local wildlife, have already had to make adjustments to their lifestyle for the existing arrangements with the hotel. The noise levels and the continuous bass sounds have definitely spoilt the tranquillity of our island paradise, most of which is supposed to be protected. I think it is time for the Hotel 78

Dear Editor, Last year (Issue 52) I write a letter about the World Population Bomb. At the request of a student at the BISHS, I did some research on what this means for Australia. According to the ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics), the population of Australia is expected to reach 49.2 million by 2066, we hit 25 million two decades ahead of their projections. The Prime Minister (Scott Morrison) has said that infrastructure is not keeping up with population growth. Everything in Australia will have to be duplicated or doubled in size by 2066 (in 47 years), that means, divide everything we have now by 47 and that is what has to be built by the end of every year. Keep in mind that it takes between 50 and 80 tonnes of CO2 to build an average house in the UK, translate that to the size of houses in Australia. We will have to build by the end of this year, 202,000 houses, 201 schools, 15 public and 13 private hospitals. We need to build or double the capacity of 3 major dams, 45 small dams/weirs, 37 major shopping centres. Every road, bridge, rail line, sewage treatment plant, landfill site has to be doubled by 2066. Australia has 3.94 million square kilometres of farm/grazing land so, we have to clear 84,000 square kilometres of bushland for crops/grazing every year just to The Bribie Islander

keep pace with population growth. How many trees are there per square kilometre? One tree can absorb as much as 20 kilograms of CO2 per year. Here is a little problem, the total land mass of Australia is 7.692 million square kilometres, take from that 1.371 square kilometres of deserts (10 deserts in Australia), 280,000 square kilometres of national parks and 3.94 million square kilometres of existing farmland. Then to feed to population double the amount of farmland is needed, and there is not enough land. That does not include doubling the size of every city and town in Australia and the 2.2 million square kilometres of the Great Dividing Range that is not suitable for broad acre farming. At the moment we use 612.6 million kWh of electricity per day, how can we reduce CO2 emissions to zero by 2050 in accordance with the Paris Agreement while keeping the lights on. There is a Chinese curse which says “May he live in interesting times”, our children and our children’s children will live in very interesting times! Regards; Eric Adams Bongaree Dear Editor, (Re – Harriet Remy-Maillet- travel home after hospital discharge). I was taken to Caboolture Hospital a few months back. I had no money, a jacket over my nightie and a pair of thongs and was a bit groggy when leaving the hospital early in the morning. Except for the emergency staff working constantly attending to people needing urgent attention behind the closed glass doors the reception area was empty and abandoned. I figured the only way I’d get back to Banksia Beach was to start walking the 27 klms. I walked to Central Lakes and locked myself in the handicapped toilet where it felt safe to curl up in the dark on the dirty floor and rest but an hour or so later I was woken by a cleaner unlocking the door. Startled I took off to walk home. I started walking and now and then I would lie down in the long grass as far off the road as possible and I could hear cars whizzing by me. One time when I was walking a police car drove past me going to Bribie and yes, I wished they’d stopped and asked me what I was doing but they may not have seen me. Later I was lying on the grass and a bus suddenly stopped right near me and I looked up to see the doors open in front of

me. I told the lady driver from Bribie Island Coaches that I had no money to pay but she said she could see my hospital wrist band and I didn’t need to pay her. Two passengers helped me into the bus and when I got to Bribie the lady driver told the other driver to take me to Banksia Beach. I felt like my guardian angel had organized this to take care of me. That lady bus driver was very kind and caring and showed my struggling sole that there are people who care for others. Thank you Bribie Island Coaches for employing such a wonderful lady to help me. Meryl, Banksia Beach. Dear Editor, Felt I had to share two lovely experiences that came my way recently. My bus stop does not have a seat or shelter and is boiling hot in the sun. A lovely woman in a nearby house has put a large wooden armchair under trees in the shaded front of her home. She even puts out a padded cushion each morning. This is a God send and a lovely thoughtful thing to do. Whilst standing at the bus stop across the road from above recently, it started to rain and I sought shelter under some trees. Suddenly, a large, muscular, heavily tattooed young man approached me from across the street................and offered an umbrella. “Just drop it back when your are finished” he said. When a short, white haired elderly woman sees a muscular tattooed young man coming toward her it does not always auger well - in this instance, it was courtesy, kindness and decency visiting. So lovely to know that kindness lives in Bongaree. Warms the heart. PS. Love the magazine and welcome the bi-weekly editions. Kind Regards, Carol Dear Editor, The following is a letter that I have emailed to our local councillor and would like you to publish in The Bribie Islander. Re: Bribie Island Sustainability. I am writing this letter with the hope that these following concerns can be tabled at the next Moreton Bay Regional Council meeting. As by now I’m sure you are well aware of the mountainous volume of vehicle traffic which visited Bribie Island over the Christmas Holidays and in particular the

Australia Day Long Week-end. The amount of holiday makers along the Pumicestone Passage by far exceeded the facilities which have been put in place. Vehicles were parked on the grassed foreshore with gazebos end to end and reaching to and in some cases over the pedestrian path. The current entry and exit roads to Bribie Island are extremely inadequate as was seen with the accident on the bridge on Sunday. I believe the major concern here is of the safety and health of the residents and holiday visitors. Emergency personal are hard stretched to aid assistant. Bribie Island is still surrounded by a Marine Park where migratory birds rest before their journey back to the Northern Hemisphere. Again, and again council is reminded of these facts but these concerns fall on deaf ears, fireworks still light up and explode in our night skies. The screeching and panicked flights of the local birds can not be heard from the passage due to the explosive fireworks, but they can be heard away from the passage. The amount of 4WD’s on the surf side of the island is just ludicrous! Fraser Island use to be a free for all many years ago, however a vehicle limit is in place. I am urging you to please consider this option. Again, council has been informed about the turtles that nest along the beaches. And again, council refuses to acknowledge this fact. So once again, it has been suggested that council is not operating in the best interest of Bribie Island. I would like to put forward some suggestions: On the western side of Morayfield or North Lakes, a Southbank style water facility should be constructed. This would attract people not only from Morayfield but North Lakes and Caboolture as well. Taking the strain off Bribie Island and returning Bribie to a pristine island National Park and Marine Park. Secondly, raise the Beach Permit price and largely reduce the amount of permits available. Thirdly, I am not suggesting that bigger and better highways be put in place to gain entry to the island, however I am suggesting we reduce the amount of people that want to come to Bribie Island as the island would not sustain the influx! In closing, I hope the MBRC will be

part of the solution and not part of the ongoing problem. Yours Sincerely, Deb Elliott. Dear Editor, On Sunday 27/01/2019 we decided to take our visitors to The Dock and Dine at Spinnakers for coffee and as we drove along the foreshore came across the traffic which was at a complete standstill from a four-car crash which had happened on the bridge an hour earlier. I made the comment that this could be the straw that broke the camel’s back in the form of a “perfect storm” which was a long weekend, a show at the Sandstone Hotel, where thousands were expected mainly coming from The Caboolture side, and tourists looking to travel around the area. We seem to have three inept representatives in the form of Local, State and Federal government officials who enjoy having photos attending various events around the district, appearing in all the various newsprint editions, but lack the spine to demand of The State Government to get a second bridge and a decent road to our Island, will it take a big tragedy and loss of life to finally get something done? With the loss of income from the patrons trying to get to his Hotel to enjoy the afternoon and evening entertainment perhaps Mr Comiskey has some friends in high places at a State or Federal level he could call on, after all, he managed to get a rezoning of a rural cattle grazing property into one of the top commercial successes of the last ten years in Queensland, so perhaps we now need his help, as we don’t all have the luxury of using a helicopter to avoid traffic queues. Even if a start was made on a second bridge and a duplication of the main road it would probably be three years or more before it was finished and things are only going to get worse, it seems all the forms of governments like to take from the residents of Bribie but give very little in return and the same cannot be said of North Lakes, Petrie or the Redcliffe area, perhaps if Mayor Sutherland lived here things would be different? Philip Arlidge, Bribie
