A MESSAGE FROM SUSAN
It’s a busy time of year in politics. The Liberals dropped their disappointing Budget, Labor announced our positive plan for Australia, and now we’re just a few short weeks away from an election. Now that Parliament has adjourned, it’s great to be back in our community - where I’ve been lucky to call home for the past 30 years.
While local families like mine were let down by the Government’s Budget - the Liberals locking in their cuts to schools and hospitals - I’m sticking with Labor to stand up for regular Aussies. I’ve got a plan for our region; a plan that ensures that everyone in our community gets a fair go. When you see me out-and-about - maybe at our local shops or at a
community event - I’d love to hear your thoughts about Labor’s plan for our area.
Susan Lamb MP Federal Member for Longman
Calling out the Liberals’ unfair 2019 Budget After six years of LNP cuts and chaos, and mere weeks before an election, this Budget was Scott Morrison’s last chance to reverse his cuts to the services that everyday Australians rely on. Instead, it locked in cuts to local schools, hospitals, and apprenticeships and training. Our community was completely overlooked in their Budget, too - there wasn’t a single cent of new infrastructure funding for 2019. But, what makes it that much worse, is that the Liberals have used a $1.6 billion underspend on the NDIS to fund their Budget. The decision to hold the NDIS to ransom so that the Liberals can continue to side with the top end of town isn’t just unfair - it’s wrong. I’ve been calling on the Government to rethink their priorities and I hope they listen. I hope they listen when they hear Labor’s plan to bring back a fair go for regular Aussies, like you and like me.
Sticking up for our local schools Having worked as teacher aide at Dakabin State School, and having raised four boys, I know just how important a well-funded education system can be. That’s why I was so shocked when the Liberals went against their word and slashed the Federal funding from our local schools. Year after year, Budget after Budget, they’ve had the opportunity to reverse these cuts but, shamefully, they refused every time. These cuts aren’t just pocket-change, either - our local schools are missing out on millions of dollars in funding because of this Government’s misguided priorities. This means that kids going to these local schools are missing out on vital resources like more teacher aides and specialty learning equipment. I’m proud to be able to say that, if Labor wins the next Election, I’ll be reversing these cuts and bringing back a bit of fairness for our kids. They’re the future of our country and an investment in a quality education system is an investment in Australia. Authorised by Susan Lamb MP, Australian Labor Party, Level 1, 69 King Street Caboolture Qld 4510.

Labor’s Fair Go Plan
for our community [Special Health Edition] Each issue I will be highlighting a part of Labor’s positive plan for our community. I’m proud of our comprehensive suite of policies that sticks up for a fair go for locals
Funding Healthcare Facilities in our area
No matter where I go, one thing I hear time and time again is how important an affordable, accessible, and quality healthcare system is. That’s why I haven’t stopped fighting - since way back before I was elected - to ensure that our community’s healthcare facilities get their fair share of funding. It’s pretty clear that it’s paying off, too - Bill Shorten and Shadow Health Minister Catherine King have both been very supportive of my plan for our region. Bill has personally helped to get Bribie Island’s Urgent Care Clinic project off the ground, supporting my proposal to build a $17 million Medicare-funded healthcare facility for our region. And, to make things even better, Labor will also reverse the $2.9 million cut that the Liberals made to the Caboolture Hospital and invest in a brand new $10 million Chemotherapy Ward. One thing is for sure - under a Shorten Labor Government our community is going to have access to a top-tier healthcare system right on our doorstep.
Giving Medicare a much-needed boost Bob Hawke introduced Medicare way back in 1984. Since then, it’s become the pride of our Nation - delivering quality and affordable healthcare to every Australian no matter their bank balance. Shamefully, over the last six years, the Liberals have been undermining our Medicare system - the impact of their Medicare freeze was plain to see, with out-of-pocket costs to visit a GP up 25% under the LNP. Things will change under Shorten Labor Government. If elected, we will end the Medicare freeze in our first 50 days of government. On top of that, we will deliver the biggest boost to Medicare since it was created - a huge $2.3 billion investment to reduce medical costs for cancer patients. Currently 1 in 2 Australians are diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their life and this announcement will deliver important scans, consultations, and medical support for them when they need it most.

HAPPY EASTER HOLIDAYS
F
or those of us not enjoying retirement, the upcoming Easter Holidays means an opportunity to enjoy a short break, catch up with family and friends and overindulge in chocolate if we are that way inclined.
It is a funny holiday period when you think about it. Unlike the Christmas break, it seems to catch us with little warning or fanfare. Perhaps because it doesn’t quite evoke the retail excitement as does that other religious festival? And I guess that is the point really. It is a religious festival celebrated by the Christian faith around the world, not a commercial celebration as such.
If you would like to know more about the meaning of Easter then you can turn to page 62 where we have a comprehensive listing of church services. If you want to better understand the meaning of Easter then why not attend one of the special Easter Services that many of the Bribie churches will be running. For the less devout the four-day break, for those lucky enough to be taking it, seems to be not quite enough time to get everything done that we need to around the home nor be quite enough time to get away and unwind. But a break from work is a break nonetheless. So no matter what you choose to do this Easter may we wish you, our readers and advertisers, a very safe, relaxing and happy Easter break to you and all your loved ones from all the team at The Bribie Islander Happy Easter!

RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ELDER ABUSE O
by Marjorie Voss OAM
n Friday 5th April the Sunshine Coast Region of the Order of Australia Association hosted a Morning Tea at the beautiful Serenity Restaurant on Bribie Island. The sun was shining on Pumicetone Passage as the thirty-seven members and guests were greeted by the Region Convenor, Marjorie Voss OAM and her husband Royce Voss OAM. After a time of fellowship, relaxing on the verandah of the Restaurant, the members were invited to partake of a delicious
morning tea. There was much talking and laughter, as Order of Australia members and their guests renewed friendships and made new ones. Following the morning tea our guest speaker, Sonia Colvin the founder of “Hairdressers with Hearts spoke of her vision for helping those suffering from Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse and how it has grown from its roots on Bribie Island. Sonia gave frightening statistics of the number of deaths and cases resulting from these. She also spoke of the wonderful

work which is now being carried out to assist the people finding themselves in this situation. In all, it was a very enlightening and at the same time heartening address. Sonia was thanked by Paula Penfold AM for her presentation and was also presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Sunshine Coast Region of the Order of Australia Assn. by the State Chairman of the Association, Prof. John Harden AM. Members from as far away as Gympie and areas in between attended the Morning Tea. Not only were they keen to hear the
Guests (some from Gympie) listening to Sonia Guest Speaker, but also wanted to spend the day on our beautiful Bribie Island. They were not disappointed and were full of praise for the venue and the scenery and for the morning as a whole. The Order of Australia Association comprises those people who have been recognized by receiving an award in the Order of Australia. The Sunshine Coast Region stretches from Mango Hill to Gympie and comprises approximately 130 members. Functions are held in various areas in the Region.

CLUB NEWS
BACK TO BACK WIN FOR BRIBIE BOWLS CLUB
T
he Bribie Island Bowls Club has won for the second year in a row the coveted award for “Best Bowls Club (large)” at the 2019 Clubs Queensland Awards for Excellence. The community club, whose motto is ‘where friends meet’ has continued to go from strength to strength.
“In my 10 years as CEO of Clubs Queensland, one of my greatest joys is seeing how our community clubs continue to evolve, “said Doug Flockhart, CEO Clubs Queensland. “Bribie Island Bowls club is a wonderful example of a community club that has kept its roots firmly entrenched in supporting bowls and at the same time evolved as a magnificent venue for the Bribie Island community.” “Winning this award is another major achievement for the club and they should be extremely proud, “said Mr Flockhart. “Turning the tide on a declining membership is not an easy ask and Bribie Island Bowls has managed to hold steady,
and in fact grow its membership because they are continually searching for ways to find new members and offer new and innovative services.”
Bribie Island Bowls Club is the backbone of bowls in the district, running an operationally professional venue that provides the funding to support a very competitive bowls programme, right through to monthly barefoot bowls, and programmes such as the MBRC Older and Bolder programme and the MBRC Healthy and Active programme which are designed to keep seniors in the community active. The club also believes it is important to help out the local community and charities however they can through cash donations, prizes, vouchers, or the free use of a room to hold a committee meeting. “The club takes a very holistic approach to nurturing their membership and the community. The awards judges were particularly impressed with the way the club engages with its
community and has created an intergenerational meeting place for the community, in particular, the diverse range of bowls programmes for all ages,” said Mr Flockhart. “This type of relationship with members is what makes community clubs so valuable.” “To continue to provide for our communities, the club

Another highlight was the set provided by Frolly, Frank Lennon and Amanda Jones. Amanda delighted everyone with a solo set before being joined by Frank and young drummer, Jarrod. One of the best things about Locals Only is how performers evolve from month to month and these folks do just that.
A
nother Locals Only Show, and what a beautiful day to present it. A large crowd turned out to enjoy an afternoon of music and laughter. The Shave for a Cure fundraising part of the show was a huge success, with a few people lining up for the shave, including Dan Burns, host of the show, shaving his beard and moustache for the cause. It was a great feeling to see the audience getting involved, with generous donations and the latecomers participating at the last minute. Well done to all involved.

Locals Only drummer, John Girgenti, paid tribute to two young drummers, Dylan (10yrs old) and Jarrod (18yrs),who both played for the first time in front of a crowd. We’ve always had younger artists appearing, but young and really good drummers are something we don’t see too often which prompted John to say a few words about them. An emotional tribute in the Absent Friends part of the show,to remember Corey Tabe, who passed away 3years ago. Corey was a tremendous all
Col Shields played his usual great set,but was later ‘pranked’ by the band into playing guitar on an old Chuck Berry classic, halfway through which, the band stopped,Dan Burns took his guitar from him and told Col to take his fiancee for a dance, for the rest of the song.Congratulions to Col and Lorraine on your engagement from all of us in the Locals community. “Lunch breaks became meetings of plan -do -review, resulting in knocking on every door, collecting thousands of signatures and sharing our vision with the community. We quickly
gained unwavering support from our local service groups, who then arranged meetings with representatives of state parliament. Within 2 short years we were discussing the design and colours of the uniform right down to the school motto of achieving our future,” Sonia said. “I can hardly describe the feeling of achievement the day we found out this school was going ahead, the pride to walk through the gates as a foundation student of Bribie island state high school created a legacy for future generations to enjoy.” The school captains Alexis Thomas, Kieffer Titmus, Madi Dryden and Eliza Jones chaired the Investiture and led the students in the taking of the oath.

COMMUNITY DAY AT DONNYBROOK HUGE SUCCESS T he recent Community Day held at Donnybrook on Saturday 23 March has proven to be a great success for the three local communities of Donnybrook Meldale and Toorbul. The inaugural event was instigated by the Moreton Bay Regional Council and it brought together many community organisations from the three Coastal Villages. Our local councillor, Brooke Savige was in attendance and thanked everyone for their participation. The Fire Brigade was very prominent – especially in their bright yellow uniforms – even on such a hot day. Their members had their
competition with community members voting for their choice. Simone Wilson donated a prize for the most popular which was won by Betty, whose scarecrow was doing his job from a wheelchair! As a first time event for our communities, it was very well attended, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Our own Radio Station FM101.5 was in attendance, and they did a great job all day, informing us of what was going on. The SES, Disaster Management, Neighbourhood Watch Groups from Donnybrook and Toorbul, Donnybrook

COMMUNITY EVENT
CALLING ALL ORCHID LOVERS
I
t is said that the growing of flowering orchids brings you happiness.
If this statement holds true then there is going to be much happiness and joy to be had at the forthcoming Bribie Island Orchid Society “Easter Orchid and Foliage Show”.
The premiere show for Orchid growers and those who appreciate the true beauty of the orchid will be held over two days in the Orchid House and the Indoor Bowls Hall located at Entrance 3 – 156A First Ave, Bongaree. The dates and times for the show are Friday 19th April 2019 from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm and again on Saturday 20th April 2019 from 8.30 am until 3:00 pm. If previous shows are any guide the show should attract somewhere between 800 to 1000 plus people to the event. This popular annual show has been held in the Orchid House for the previous nine years and in other locations before then. “The Easter Orchid and Foliage Show has always attracted the attention of
orchid growers from far and wide,” said club secretary Teresa Watson. Teresa says that this year’s event will be even bigger and better and those who attend will be seeing a marvellous display of beautiful orchids. “As well there will be plant sales, a cake and craft stall, a potting demonstration a sausage sizzle plus numerous raffles with some great prizes donated by our generous sponsors,” she said. The premises is wheelchair friendly and groups of ten or more will receive a discount on the admission price. The modest admission price of $5.00 per person includes morning/ afternoon tea and groups of ten or more pay only $4.50 per person. Founded thirty-two years ago the Bribie Island Orchid Society has many very keen growing members as well as two qualified judges and a number of other members who are training to become qualified judges. Apparently judging orchids is quite a complicated process and even involves measuring certain parts of the plant with a micrometre. The Bribie Island Orchid Society is always ready to welcome new members or

Something for everyone Bribie Island University of the Third Age is a remarkable volunteer organisation that offers 150 different classes on a wide range of topics each week. There are over 1900 Senior students and the whole thing is run by Volunteers.
Y
ou can only do one of these subjects at Bribie Island U3A next term. Now that I have your attention ….. I can tell you that it is the last one…… on Thursdays at lunchtime. But who knows what the future might bring!!
They might be classified as “Senior” but most of them certainly don’t behave that way, as it is all about Learning for Fun, with new friends and new interests. Most of them may be retired, but their brains certainly have not. Lifelong Learning is recognised as a key factor in the third stage of life, so if you have not yet discovered the delights of U3A, you should consider it. There is something for every interest including Art, Craft, Language, Health, Dance, Music, Computer, Sport, History, Culture, Games, Literature, Theatre …..and many more. Enrolment for new members in Term 2 will be held at U3A Centre in First Avenue on Monday 15th April between 9 am and 11 am. Many classes are already full, but there are several ongoing and new classes on offer that may be of interest. You can find the Timetable at the Bribie Library, Visitor Information and Neighbourhood Centres. Bribie U3A is closed for holidays from April 5th until Tuesday, April 23rd after the Easter holidays.

WHO’S IDEA WAS IT TO BUY A CAFE? SPECIAL ADVERTISING PROMOTION
PART 2.
I
By Richard Whetlor
’m not sure if you remember or even read the article I wrote late last year on buying a cafe? Well, here we are at The Bribie Islander Cafe, after seven months of hard graft, blood, sweat and tears! It’s an interesting game, the hospitality one, never have me and my beautiful wife, Selina, been in the food industry before. In the beginning, when we bought the cafe we were in with both boots deep with zero experience and I can honestly say it’s a tough gig! We took ownership on a Saturday, with no more
until we started to get smashed, order, order, order, order, order, order after order was coming into the kitchen, WOW! Then I stepped back and looked through the serving hatch and there was a queue of people, all the tables were full and more orders coming in!! I stepped back to the grill and then it dawned on me that I’m the chef!!!! Mindblank took place at this point and I started to panic, I could not focus on the orders and anxiety filled me. But I do love a challenge and decided to count up the items on the orders
it was just me, Selina, Ellie and Cam and we did our biggest day of 80 plus orders, one order could be a table of 6 for example. It was pressure all day and then a feeling of excitement and achievement all in one. Selina plated well over 250 plates of food, Cam ran them out and Ellie made heaps and heaps of coffees, we ran out of supplies twice, amazing job guys. I would personally like to say, to all that have come to the cafe and supported us, A BIG THANK YOU!!! You know who you are.
THE TEAM: Ellie, Richard, Selina, Sara and Cameron. help from the previous owner, we are on our own in a scary place, but an exciting place too. Saturday was OK learning the new jobs and various tasks and steady customers all day. BUT, along comes Sunday. It was a beautiful sunny day on Bribie, the markets were on across the road in Brennan Park and it was also Fathers Day. I remember I was the chef and was quite happy cooking up some brekkies 26
and before you know it, 15 sausages, 15 eggs, 15 bacon, 15 hash browns, 15 tomatoes, 15 mushrooms, 15 baked beans and I shouted back “Cam, 15 toast please!”. The day continued like this and we were all scarred for life! The customers don’t like to wait no matter what! It was pretty rough but we all soldiered on and have made it work well with lots of regulars and lots of tourists too. One Sunday

The Bribie Islander
Some of you may or may not also know that I started this magazine ‘The Bribie Islander’ nearly 5 years ago as a newspaper in August 2014, then after 3 years of being the Editor and owner, I decided to add an A4 gloss magazine for good measure. Then I also started the Bribie Island Solar shop next to the media office. I have recently set up an online wholesale business too. I think it’s called an undiagnosed mental condition?! Anyway, something has to give as I am a dad of three and have been working seven days for God knows how
long and want a bit more family time together. So we have decided to put the Cafe up for sale and so is Bribie Island Solar (0425 477 639) which I’m sure will take several months to sell them and then I’m looking forward to a weekend off I can tell you! We have extended the outdoor dining licence from 24 to around 70 plus seats, council approved and are currently working on a new menu for the cafe, so watch this space! So I was wondering....if you love this magazine, which lots of locals tell us they do, then come to the cafe and see if you love our food and the best coffee on Bribie (we get told) and help support the Islander magazine too! Meet me and the good lady wife Selina. We are open Wednesday to Sunday 8 am till 1 pm and sometimes longer depending on the demand. If you mention this article we will give you a FREE coffee with any meal purchased. See you at The Bribie Islander Cafe? Opposite Brennan Park, Shop 2/9 Toorbul St, Bongaree. A READER’S STORY
THE MATRON By Michelle Roberts
Dear Editor, My name is Michelle Roberts, I am a 51 year old lady who lives in the little seaside town of Bowen, in far north Queensland. In December of last year I sadly had to go into the local hospital as I was dehydrated, it’s hard getting used to the climate, I had only moved from Melbourne in September and not prepared for the extreme heat. Whilst I was there I put pen to paper and wrote a story that I would like to share, it’s called The Matron, please enjoy…..
I
t’s four am and it sounds like a steam train is coming past me, but no it’s the man in the bed next to me in this little coastal hospital. In many ways it reminds me of the old eighties series “A Country Practice”. Not much has
28
changed here thirty years later, with the stout abrupt Matron, with her hair pulled back tightly into a bun at the base of her head. A very scary lady indeed. On my first morning, this very stout lady showers me, well she holds the shower rose ready to rinse me off after giving me a chux cloth to wash myself with, the water hits me with a sting as my body gets used to the heat and pressure of the water, but I daren’t say a word. Oh no this is serious business, just like hosing down a car. The water goes cold, yes it actually goes cold. The Matron gives me one towel to dry myself with, whilst she dries my legs with another, I try to make a joke, but oh no, no jokes to be had here this is serious business. Once I’m dried and put my bed clothes on all with the assistance of The Matron, I have a tube connected to my arm feeding me, and this makes it difficult to get dressed, but Matron in her no nonsense ways deals with this very efficiently, of course. Once dressed, teeth cleaned and hair brushed in a loose bun at the top of my head, which is fashionable these days, unlike The Matron’s tight

blankets back then. But I snuggle down and look at my mobile phone which looks so totally out of place here in this hospital room of a little seaside practice. Oh dear the lights have gone out, and I am in complete darkness, I’m not liking this at all, why have the lights gone out? To save on electricity, or Matron’s orders for the night staff! bun at the base of her head. Righto time to get back into bed, after The Matron does a stellar job of putting nice starched white sheets on my bed, hospital corners to perfection, plumps up the pillows all nice and ready for me to get back into. This is a trial as I still have the tube feeding me one drip at a time, I don’t think it’s working too well as I’m ravenous, and would kill for a coke, but oh no, no soft drinks here , nil by mouth young lady, and who am I to argue with The Matron? No no no no no no, I’m not brave enough to even speak. I’m back in bed now and The Matron asked if I was comfortable, and I nod in agreeance as I lay on the rock hard mattress with the crisp cold white sheets and a hospital blanket, why do they use those blankets with holes in them they do not keep you warm, I’m sure thirty years ago when I had my first son they were using the same
Back to the mobile phone, I touch it and it lights up my area of my four person room, oh good I can write again, the man in the bed in the other corner starts snoring whilst the man next to me is still chugging away, is this some competition or what? I suppose if I had of accepted that sleeping tablet last night when it was offered I too would be snoring away too. I love this little hospital with all the props and staff to take me back thirty years when I watched my favourite program on the telly. This makes me good, warm and fuzzy inside. Matron and all of the other characters, thank you for making me better and giving me this wonderful experience back to when life seemed so much simpler. I put my mobile phone away in the drawer snuggle down and think all is as it should be, sleep time.

WINELANDER REGULAR FEATURE
A
s you may have gathered by now I enjoy a wine lifestyle, I have spent the last forty years or so making a living either standing in bottle shops, drive-throughs or sitting in buyers offices trying to sell the stuff or simply talking to anyone who shows any interest in the subject, and I must admit in retirement it is something I miss although reading up on various items for this column still keeps me involved to a degree. Today’s subject isn’t so much about wine itself but what you can do with wine that is “virtually undrinkable” and the leftovers after the grapes have been crushed otherwise known as the ‘grape must’ or ‘pomace’ and in this article there will be some facts and a myth, which for all I know could actually turn out to be fact, but if it isn’t it makes for an interesting story. Firstly what do you do with all the pulp, seeds and skins once the juice has been extracted and 30
is on its merry way to the tanks for fermentation and made into your favourite wine? In most countries, it is either dumped directly into the fields as a fertiliser or fed to the animals but in Italy back in the days when the peasants were very poor and after the grapes had been harvested for their landlords they added a further step to the process and took some of the ‘must’ home. Once the damp pulp was home it would be fermented and the leftover liquid extracted and distilled to create a high proof alcoholic beverage that made the winters, long days in fields, and poverty more bearable. Then they dumped the leftovers in the field or troughs, I thought you would you like to meet Grappa. Now the myth, and it is a good one, involved a Roman soldier in Bassano del Grappa, just outside of Venice, who loved the smell of ‘grape must’ leftover from the winemaking and worked out how to do something with it. It helped that on his way back from the battles in Egypt he had acquired a ‘still’ and decided to put to good use and Grappa was born, there you go the origin of Grappa dates back to Roman times. However, it is more likely Grappa probably emerged from Europe’s middle ages when a lot of grains and fruits were distilled into various spirits.
Today in an effort to stamp out the making of ‘moonshine’ Italian law requires winemakers to sell their ‘must’ to Grappa makers and this seems to work, and nowadays, as with other spirit making, the levels of quality vary from cheap to quite expensive with the product sold in some amazing bottles.
www.thebribieislander.com.au
The Bribie Islander
How do you turn grapes that are very dry, acidic, thin and almost undrinkable into some of the most expensive alcoholic beverages in the world? The grapes in question are Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche and Colombard (although here in Australia Colombard can actually make a pleasant dry white but not in some parts of Europe) and to change their character you make them into a wine at around 12% alcohol then using either a pot ‘still’ several times, or a continuous ‘still’ pushing the alcohol up to around 60% and then a dilution using distilled water change the liquid into a spirit known as Brandy with an alcohol content of 40%. Brandy is made all over the world wherever the grapes are grown simply by boiling white wine in a copper pot ‘still’ or a continuous ‘still’ but two areas above all are recognised for the quality of what they produce and they are Cognac and Armagnac in France. While Armagnac can be aged in wooden casks for a minimum of one year to reach the V.S. standard (Very Special) Cognac needs to be aged for at least two years as it is in Australia. Cognac is produced using a copper pot and is twice distilled before reducing the alcohol level to 40% by using distilled water then stored in Limousin oak barrels until needed for bottling and blending then depending on the blend of aged material will be priced accordingly. For example, a bottle of Remy Martin Louis 13th Cognac will cost around $3000 but there have been cases where very rare blends have cost in excess of $30,000
By Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au for a bottle. On the bottles, the letters V.S depict a three-star brandy which designates a blend in which the youngest brandy has been stored in casks for at least two years. V.S.O.P (Very Superior Old Pale) is a blend stored for at least four years and X.O. (Extra Old) or Napoleon in which the minimum age is ten years, also after distillation and during the aging process is also called ‘eau de vie’ or translated as ‘water of life’ Lower cost spirits are made using the continuous stills which need far less skill to produce the end product, due to the decline in the sale of brandy here in Australia very few copper stills remain in use. Now for the good news here in Australia one company still produces brandy to match the best in the world and that is St. Agnes of South Australia which is owned by The Angove Family Winemakers. Dr William Angove established a distillery in Renmark in 1910 where he planned to make spirit for fortifying wine as port and sherry were very popular around this time. William’s son Carl travelled to Cognac to learn from the best and upon his return St. Agnes Brandy was born in 1925. Every year since 1925 the St. Agnes Distillery and Barrel halls have been carefully handcrafting brandy that is equal to any produced anywhere and in that period there have been just five master distillers! Apart from the superb St. Agnes V.S. Brandy which is aged for a minimum of three years, there is a family of brandies including The V.S.O.P. aged for five years, a St. Agnes X.O. aged for 15 years, a St. Agnes X.O.
Imperial aged for twenty years and the St. Agnes X.O. Grand Reserve aged for forty years all double pot distilled, all of the XO. The range is superbly packaged and if there is a decision on which brandy to buy there is really only one and it’s Australian! Let’s go from the sublime to the ridiculous, there is a wine on the market that Angove’s have represented under licence here in Australia for fifty years, it has sold several million cases over this period,

HEALTH AWARENESS
BEWARE THE SILENT KILLER By Cay Ellem
A
s Kidney Awareness Week (8th – 14th April) comes to an end it is a timely reminder to become more understanding of this terrible disease. Kidney failure is the silent killer. It creeps up on you and by the time you have any symptoms the damage is done. Just over three years ago, my husband, Barry was rushed to hospital with less than two percent kidney function. The doctor thought he had the flu or pneumonia as the symptoms of kidney failure are not easily identified. Following a blood test, an
ambulance was sent for him in the middle of the night because it would not wait till morning. He was critical. He was placed on dialysis immediately though it took several days for the specialist to identify the cause. This was a very stressful time for him and the family.
Barry on haemodialysis level of the awareness of breast cancer, skin cancer and prostate cancer. We all know what to look for in these cases. Of course, as I said earlier, kidney failure is the silent killer. The best way is to have a blood test. Many of us have regular blood tests so it is easy to ask the doctor to add kidney to the test.
Over time things have settled down and he has had a series of treatments. He is living well now on home haemodialysis. This means sitting for 5 hours, three days a week attached to the machine.
I think anyone over 60 should check up on their kidneys. Barry had literally never been sick so had never had blood tests.
This has been a slow agonising journey. I would like to see kidney disease awareness raised to the
We have formed a support group on Bribie Island – just an informal group where we can have a cuppa, share our experiences, discuss our problems and help each other. There are about 12 of us. Some are on dialysis and some have had a kidney transplant. We meet at the Bribie Island RSL on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 10 am for coffee and a chat. If you are interested please contact Cay on 34083219 or cayandbarry@gmail.com

males also have the red patches but are a striking yellow on their breasts and abdomens. Females of both forms are identical with brown colouring above and streaked on the underparts. Figbirds are medium-sized passerines 27-29 cm in length and weigh 100-150g.
Figbirds are found in eastern and northern Australia and in PNG on the edges of rainforests, in Mangrove and Melaleuca swamps, in woodlands and on trees in suburbia. They are sometimes nomadic chasing fruiting trees where they mostly feed high in the
The breeding season is usually between October and February. Cup shaped nests are built of small sticks and vines in horizontal forks usually about 20 m from the ground. They often build their nests fairly close together in groups. Some Figbirds have been known to build their nests close to Frogmouths’ nests, presumably as a form of protection as predators could be discouraged by the presence of such large birds of prey. Two or three brown mottled eggs are laid and incubated by both parents

ROTARY Rotarians and guests enjoying the fellowship of a meeting
WHAT REALLY HAPPENS AT A ROTARY MEETING By Anne Matthews PR Director Bribie Rotary
I
’m often asked what really happens at a Rotary meeting? Is it boring, how can you spend two hours sitting listening to people talk? Do you have secret handshakes, Grand Pooh Bahs and do you wear special regalia – eg Mooseheads or antlers? Do you say prayers and recite memorised codes of conduct? Are there special artefacts in the meeting room? The answer to these questions can be funny, informative and educational – but I must say, our meetings are certainly never boring. Rotary International, the world’s first service organisation, is made up of over 33,000 clubs, in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Our members form a global network of business, professional and community leaders who volunteer their time and talents to serve their communities and the world. 42
Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self, exemplifies the humanitarian spirit of the organisations more than 1.2 million members. Strong fellowship and friendship among Rotarians and meaningful community and international service projects characterise Rotary worldwide. Members include wealthy, middle and low income working and retired professionals and tradespeople. Rotarians also set a standard for ethics in business management and in their daily lives through the use of ‘The Rotary four-way test.’ The test ensures that a planned action is compatible with the Rotary objectives and spirit. We ask:
Formats of meetings vary from Club to Club. The Rotary Club of Bribie Island follow a more traditional agenda. Following a formal introduction of visiting Rotarians and guests our meeting commences with Rotary Grace and a toast to Australia. This is followed by an International Toast which is given by a rostered member and gives information about an overseas Club and their projects and activities. The President and any member who has something to
pass on gives a Report to the meeting. A meal is served and then the guest speaker gives a talk - not necessarily on Rotary. The meeting ends with a game of Heads and Tails (similar to Two Up) and we sing the National Anthem to close the night. During the meeting, there is no ‘informal discussion’ amongst members. The meeting is ‘controlled’ by the Chairperson, just as a President of any other group or organisation would do - not allowing chit chat to disrupt the set agenda. However, because friendship and fellowship are so very much a part of Rotary, before and after the meeting members and guests mingle freely and during the meal (and perhaps over a glass of wine) they talk about anything and everything. Catching up on local events, finding out how things are going with other members and much more, it’s a process whereby Rotarians come to know each other better and form a special connection. As with all things in life, a positive attitude really helps. If you arrive at the meeting expecting to be bored and thinking that your time would be spent better somewhere else, then yes, it may not suit your needs. However a person arriving with a positive attitude, looking

So while there is “ritual/ planning” (of a sort) to a Rotary meeting, the most important ingredient is the friendship and fellowship of like-minded people who want to make the World a better place. I must admit, however, we don’t wear Mooseheads or the like – or have a special handshake – but sometimes we dress up for a special night.
forward to an evening of friendship and fellowship with like-minded people, who - although from very different backgrounds and professions - all want to be there, will likely find the time spent to be productive, informative and of value. To ensure we have successful meetings and functions, preparation is essential. Our Secretary is responsible for ensuring that all parts of the meeting are planned and prepared. The nature of healthy human emotions is to move through us, swamp us, and then pass away. When we try to repress them, emotions get stuck inside us and cause us trouble. The emotions need the opportunity for healthy expression. Children are terrified of their strong emotions overwhelming them, so they try to fend them off until they feel safe enough to experience them. Because emotions are stored in the body, tantrums are nature’s way to help young children vent. Our role as parents is to help our children feel safe enough to feel and express their emotions. Parenting is about helping children to heal their psyches and bodies; we must help them trust their own emotional process so that they can handle their own emotions as they get older, without tantrums or repression. Ultimately we must remember…
“Parenting is not giving your child everything they want. Parenting is not being your child’s friend. Parenting is about preparing your child to be a useful and respectful person in society”. - Unknown.

HISTORY
A BRIBIE COTTAGE WITH LOTS OF HISTORY By Barry Clark, Bribie Island, Historical Society
In the last two issues of this magazine, you may have read the story of Ron Patterson, who first came to Bribie in 1910, and lived here in the early 1920’s. It was during that time, living a tough life as a fisherman on Bribie, that he met the young Ivy Kettlewell whose family had built a holiday cottage on Bribie.
D
espite Ron’s rough appearance, and always stinking of fish, he met Ivy at a Dance in the only Hall on Bribie at that time, and eventually they married in 1926.
an interesting link to James Cook discovery and charting of the East coast of Australia back in 1770.
BUSTARD HEAD LIGHTHOUSE Over the next 60 years, many ships came to grief on this rocky headland. In 1867 a prefabricated iron Lighthouse was built in England and shipped out to be erected on Bustard Head. Access to the proposed location for the Lighthouse was very difficult, and bringing materials, men and equipment to construct it was very challenging. Thomas & Margaret Kettlewell Lighthouse of Tragedy book After Cook’s first landing at Botany Bay, he sailed the “Endeavour” north along the coast naming several points, including Cape Morton and the Glasshouses, before a brief stop to get water at the place now called 1770. It was here that Cook, accompanied by Joseph Banks, Dr Solander and a party of men went ashore and enjoyed the best meal they had eaten since leaving England. He wrote in his log....
This week I met up with Ron Patterson’s daughter Estelle (nee Patterson) Rashleigh, and heard about her mother’s side of the family.
“Upon the shore we saw a species of the Bustard, one of which we shot, it was as large as a Turkey, We all agreed that this was the best bird we had eaten since we left England, and in honour of this we called the inlet Bustard Bay”.
The Kettlewell family history is even more intriguing and provides

However, when complete and operational from 1868 it prevented many further disasters. There were just a few pioneer settlers who came to live, farm and fish in this rugged part of the Australian coast over the next few years. Oyster leases were operated by the Moreton Bay Oyster Co. and the large “Turkey Station” cattle property was established. Thomas and Margaret Kettlewell were living with their three young children in Maryborough in 1899 when they decided to move to Pancake Creek, within sight of the lighthouse, where Thomas would be employed as a fencing contractor on “Turkey” cattle station. Here they built a slab hut, opposite a boat shed at Pancake Creek, and lived in this very isolated location with their first three young children.
In his spare time, Thomas Kettlewell shot many Kangaroos for their skins, which they tanned. Every few weeks Margaret and her six-year-old son Albert would travel the long rough dirt track to Gladstone by horse and cart to sell the tanned skins, the round trip taking about a week. Life was very challenging in those days.
WHOLE FAMILY POISONED Thomas and Margaret produced a further three children while living at Pancake Creek, and eventually had eleven children. One night while the family huddled together in the slab hut, some tanning liquid which had been left on the shelf above the food, leaked into the oats. Next morning after breakfast of porridge the whole family became violently ill. Margaret managed to attract the attention of the lighthouse keeper, on the headland 3 kilometres away, by flashing a mirror into the sun. The relief lighthouse keeper at the time was a Tripcony, and he and his wife eventually climbed down the headland and rowed across the two-kilometrewide Pancake Creek to find out what was wrong. The whole family were very sick. The wife stayed with the Kettlewell family, Mum and Dad and three children, and eventually was able
to nurse all five of them back to good health. They went on to have three more children while living in the hut at Pancake Point. The family returned to Maryborough after 7 tough years in 1906, but their name is still remembered in a reef along the ocean beach, known today as “The Kettlewells”.
37 Toorbul Street, Cottage
One of the children born there was Ivy Kettlewell, who twenty years later would meet and marry Ron Patterson on Bribie Island. 37 Toorbul Street Thomas and Margaret Kettlewell owned two shops at West End in Brisbane and every weekend would close the shops, load up the children and dog “Royal”, board the Koopa and escape to beautiful Bribie. The dog “Royal” was a favourite of the ship’s captain Johnston and all the crew.
Ron & Ivy PattersonRedbank Army c 1941
BRIBIE ISLAND 1920’s The Kettlewell family eventually moved to live in Brisbane and in the early 1920 purchased a half acre of land in Toorbul Street, Bongaree, Bribie Island. This was just a few years after the first land was made available on Bribie Island, the Tug Company had leased land at Bongaree and built a Jetty for regular trips by the Steamship Koopa. Thomas Kettlewell built two small cottages on this land, and one still remains at No 37 Toorbul Street. These were the holiday homes for the large family of 11 children who came regularly to Bribie for holidays.
As the family grew up and started to marry and expand, the houses were no longer able to accommodate them all, but they would all still come and bring tents and camp in the nearby area of Brennan Park. In those days there were hundreds of holidaymakers camping on the island, and just a few residents, but dances were held in the Hall and singalongs by the Jetty, and someone would always have a musical instrument. It was all good clean fun, houses could always be left open and unlocked just a couple of shops for basic provisions, and plenty of great fishing.
Kettlewell family- 1976 (L to R) Estelle, Beryl, Ivy (Mum), Ray, Ron. Ivy had had a dramatic start to life having been born in a remote slab hut near the Bustard Head lighthouse. Ron and Ivy Patterson eventually had three children, and it was the youngest of these, Estelle, that I met last week here on Bribie.
FAMILY HOLIDAYS ON BRIBIE Her brother Ray was born in 1926, her sister Beryl, always known as Tamy, was born in 1928. Her father Ron had endured the great depression and reenlisted in WW2. Estelle was born in 1943 and her Mum liked to remind her that she was an unplanned pleasant surprise when Ron was home on leave.
Coming to Bribie on the Koopa after the War were wonderful memories for Estelle. Watching the men shovel coal into the boilers, the first sight of great sandy beaches, fishing off the Jetty and her sister singing with the Norman Llewelyn Band on the Koopa at weekends. Her grandfather Thomas Kettlewell died in 1941 before she was born, and Grandma then sold the two cottages on Bribie in 1947 for 400 pounds. Her father Ron Patterson worked several jobs over the years, but when he retired in 1967 he returned to live in Kangaroo Avenue on Bribie. Continues OVER PAGE >>
Her sister was 15 years older.
It was at one of these dances in 1923 that the 18-year-old Ivy Kettlewell met local fisherman Ron Patterson. They fell in love and were married in 1926 in Brisbane.

HISTORY CONTINUED Estelle married a jockey and they lived in many places around Australia, including Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns but following his bad accident and their failed marriage she returned to live on Bribie in 1982 to be with her father, brother and sister and their families. She worked at the RSL Club and at the Bellara Motel, which is now the Bellara shopping centre. Her father Ron died in 1984, just two years after he wrote his wonderful memories of early Bribie which were told in previous articles. Estelle Rashleigh has had an interesting life, spending many years travelling around Australia in her campervan, returning from time to time to Bribie where she lives now.
Lulus Party cottage 37 Toorbul Street, today. When I met Estelle this week we visited the Kettlewell family original cottage at 37 Toorbul Street, built by her Grandfather 100 years ago, and where she spent many happy holidays in her very early years. The cottage is now occupied by Lulu Drew and is the colourful location for her “Party” business. Estelle was shown around the cottage by Lulu and talked about the memories of her family all those years ago. Over coffee, Estelle showed me some family photos
which I have included in this article. It was a wonderful and fitting way to finalise the story of the Kettlewell and Patterson families, who are so much a part of Bribie Island History.

f you want to see a movie with an uplifting and inspiring storyline then this is not the film for you. This is a film featuring a defeated, traumatised and guilt-ridden cop, Erin Bell who is played by Nicole Kidman (hardly recognizable when we initially meet her) supported by Sebastian Stan, her undercover partner. Included in the supporting cast is Jade Pettyjohn, who adeptly plays Kidman’s alienated teenage daughter, Shelby. The film’s story is told through a series of frequent flashbacks that distract rather than captivate; frustrate rather than intrigue. Viewers will need to work hard piecing together why Bell’s life has unravelled so badly as the flashbacks unfold.
The Director, Karyn Kusama, known for casting female leads with depth and substance, uses Kidman’s persona to tell this story rather than allow the film to do its job. What could have been a film showing how undercover work deep within the clutches of gangland crime can destroy police officers’ lives and the lives of those they love, the film misses its mark. But…If this is a film on your “to see” list, be prepared to stay until the very end to give yourself a chance to put together the film’s fragmented pieces.

ARTS
THE ART OF BEING THERE CALLS ON STRENGTH AND LOVE
T
Kym and Sandra
By Debra Mieth
here are many ways we can ‘be there’ for friends and family who may be in a dark place. Or we may ‘be there’ alone in an environment we enjoy. So it is with pleasure the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre introduces its upcoming exhibition On Being There, which explores this theme. It will be held between April 22 and May 12 in their Matthew Flinders Gallery. One of the four exhibition artists showcasing their art is Bribie and BICAC’s own, photographer, Artist of the Month, and Matthew Flinders Art Prize award winner, Kathrin Dierich. Kathrin relates ‘being there’ as a basic human need, not only to
support someone but to be present on her solitary ‘visually listening’ walks around Bribie and Moreton Bay wherein she finds inspiration and perspective for her photographic art. Another of the artists is Bribie’s beach hut builder, Trevor O’Dwyer. Readers may recall Kathrin searched for and found the builder of these huts through her notices in The Bribie Islander. Working in a range of materials from wire to wood, Trevor’s aim in this exhibition is to communicate what becomes too hard to describe in words when ‘being there’ becomes a task that takes all of our strength. Of particular focus are those living with
Trevor and Kathrin artists depression and anxiety. The oil and cold wax paintings of Kym Barratt are a series of intuitive responses to her friend’s question, “How are you travelling?” Kym’s work explores the connections between her internal and external landscape when she was recovering from illness. She likens it to crossing metaphorical bridges, going around fences, along pathways, negotiating obstacles, climbing up and down steps and unravelling mysteries, similar to the process of ‘being there’ to create a painting. Finally, but not least, is Sandra Ross who explores the memories and emotions evoked
by losing people in her life. With a brush loaded with watery grey ink, she depicts her feelings as an abyss, tangled roots, vines reaching for water, trees clinging to rocky outcrops, and dappled light through leafy canopies, all recordings of ‘being there’ in her internal landscape. Meet the artists at the opening of On Being There on Saturday, April 20, 2019, at 2 pm, at the Bribie Community Arts Centre, 191 Sunderland Drive, Banksia Beach. Dr Marcus Bussey, senior lecturer in History and Futures at the University of the Sunshine Coast, will officially open the exhibition. RSVP on 3408 9288.

Devonshire Tea and some of the crew stayed for lunch in the café and more photography. During the month a group of photographers from the Tin Can Bay Club paid Bribie Island a visit staying for a few days. Some of our crew met up with them at Bibimulya Wetlands and we spent a very pleasant morning in their company. It was quite a hot day so after a few hours, we were happy to go to the Big Bun Bakery for morning tea. The Bribie Island Photography Club meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 7 pm in the boardroom at the back of the Arts Centre on Sunderland Drive. New members are always welcome. The first two meetings are free. If you wish to come along ring Gordon at 3408 2649 or Gail at 3408 9850 or just turn up on the night.

PHOTOGRAPHY TUTORIAL
PHOTOGRAPHY FOR BEGINNERS
By Victor Pérez Pérez (Not a professional photographer but just an experienced learner) ven though photography is an ART, besides knowing your DSLR camera (and, sometimes, besides knowing your compact one, or, even, your smartphone) you might need some technical know-how. This tutorial has no aim other than to help the beginners. For deeper learning, please consult the Internet. LESSON 5: COMPOSITION AND MESSAGE Now that we know how to handle the light and how to set our camera, let’s speak about composition. The composition is how you organize the elements included in your photo. As it’s the most delicate part of photography, we could say that it’s the most important part. Why? Because -in my opinion- it’s a personal assessment. In that context, I agree with the authors who refuse any rule in composition: we can’t have a photography ‘grammar’. Therefore, as your picture is your own work of art, you compose it as you wish: do it as you feel like to do, even if somebody doesn’t like it.
E
The most important is you liking it. Pictures -photography, paint, drawing…- use a universal language: the visual language. It’s communication too, that’s the way you transmit a message. This message can be very simple or as complex as you want. You can use shapes, lines, points, colours, tones, light, shadows, etc., which you organize freely, as you wish. Besides, we must know that in composition there are some tools we can use to better transmit our message. Some of these tools are: Light, Colour, Texture, Proportion, Dimension Perspective, Movement. The aim is to communicate your message in your personal way without caring if people like it or not. As an example, I will try to describe the action photo attached that I took some months ago. Movement: The direction of the subject, from ‘A’ to ‘B’, shows the action. Dynamism: The capture of the water in ‘A’ gives dynamism and reinforce the action.

The pontoon makes the difference
Without the tree, this sunset would be tedious
Light: In ‘C’ we can see the backlight provided by the sun. Perspective: In ‘E’ we have three areas: sand in the forefront, water in the middle and the jetty in the background. Tones and colours: The difference between the sand, the water and the jetty (‘E’) gives depth to the scene. Texture: In ‘D’ we can see the texture of the splashed water. Key point: Finally, the key point, in ‘F’, is the ball. Without the ball no action and no photo. The special light of the ball shows
that it’s the important point of the photo. That’s an example of the tools you can use to compose action photography. Some essential tips: Straighten the horizon, especially when the ocean or the sea is in the background. The main subject of your picture must be in focus. If you are not happy with a photo, don’t show it, except if you want third opinions. Another exception to show a photo you are not very happy with is when your message is more important than the photo itself.

H E A L T H Y MEDICAL ERRORS
By Heenam Kim
T
here are many brilliant doctors and nurses doing their best to support patients. However, we also need to be aware that the third leading cause of death in the U.S. is due to medical errors. Number one cause of death was heart disease, the second cause of death was cancer and the third one was medical error followed by chronic respiratory disease. Dr Martin Makary’s research team calculated in 2016, that there are more than 250,000 deaths per year, which is 9.5% of hospital deaths each year. It’s like more than 680 people dying every day by medical errors. It’s equivalent to having two planes crash daily. Though the problem here is only between 5% to 20% are reported, therefore the actual figure would be much greater. Many of us have great respect for medical professionals and give full faith in their judgments and diagnoses. About six years ago, I was diagnosed with some deadly disease, I couldn’t believe it and the shock was great. I cried for hours until I couldn’t cry anymore. Though nothing was adding up, it didn’t make any sense. I was healthy and my immune system had been really good I rarely caught even simple cold. Only thing I had back
58
then was I was having a miscarriage. I needed to find out more about the disease that I was diagnosed with and its effect on my body. So I started to study and gather all the necessary information - anything I should know about the disease. For nearly six months I did nothing but research the disease. I was speechless when I found out that the pathology test they have been conducting doesn’t find the actual virus; the test only detects antibodies of certain types of virus. Yet doctors have been using this test to diagnose people. I’ve requested to a doctor to find the actual virus from my blood then I would accept the diagnosis. The specialist doctor didn’t seem to know that there was no such test existing to detect the virus. They’ve sent my blood to Singapore and other places to find the virus; of course, they couldn’t find it. Also, my white blood cell count increased which was good news for me but it shouldn’t be possible if I had the virus. The doctor couldn’t explain how and why my white blood count increased, he simply said I might have special blood? I replied to him that I didn’t have special blood I didn’t have the virus. In my case, it concludes something like ‘theoretically I should be positive but scientifically I’m not’? This a bizarre world we are living in. Since then I’ve lost my faith in medical practices luckily I am still very healthy.

The specialist doctor who was handling my case was really good to me and respected my courage and research. I’ve realised even doctors don’t know the truth either; they were simply given the information fed by textbooks and handed down set guidelines. Thanks to the technology we can access many details about everything, all the medical journals and textbooks are available under our fingertips. It’s time for us to be independent and take charge of our own health. There are thousands of old natural remedies available to maintain our health;
prevention is the best way to stay healthy. Note: I have received mixed feedback from people about my last article. WHY FIT A SOLAR POWERED ROOF FAN?
R
oof space temperatures can climb to very high levels. It is a fact that this will increase the temperature in your living areas, requiring you to use ceiling fans and air conditioners for longer periods in warmer months leading to higher energy costs!
Reducing the heat in your roof cavity saves you money. By installing a Solar Roof Fan and cooling the ceiling cavity will effectively lower energy consumption by lowering ceiling temperatures and making ducted air conditioning more efficient. In some cases, there has been no need to use the airconditioner after the roof fans have been fitted!
Other Benefits. In the winter months, moisture, mould and mildew from air exhausted from inside the house can accumulate in the roof cavity. Effectively exhausting this accumulated air and improving the airflow has benefits for roof structure, insulation and ceiling structure. Product Quality is First Class – Bribie Island Solar’s Solar Roof/Attic Fans are designed for Australia’s extreme and ever-changing climate. These products are “Designed for Australian conditions by Australian Engineers”. Just think, in Australia, having an inferior product of any kind on your roof and a big storm arrives. Well engineered products
will still be there however inexpensive low-quality products….who knows? It is important that the Attic Fan will stay on the roof in rain, hail and shine. Many of the competitor products are relatively lightweight, made from plastic, have plastic fan blades subject to deterioration and no insect screens or thermostats.
Our Attic fans weigh in at 18 kilograms of solid metal and have been specifically designed for Australian rooftop installation. Fan blades are 100% aluminium for long life. The fan shroud and base are galvanised metal and powder coated for resistance to UV and protection against corrosion. The motor is a high-quality Brushless DC for longer life. The “heart” of the Attic Fan is the PV Panel and DC Motor. Many competitor products have a 5-year warranty on the collector and 2-year warranty on the brushless DC motor. We want the attic fan to be maintenance free and offer a 15-year warranty on the collector and 5-year warranty on the Brushless DC Motor. They also have an internal thermostat which will shut the fan off at 23 degrees in the winter months, to keep the heat in. Then when the roof space warms up to 28 degrees the fan will switch on and continue to do its job. Bribie Island Solar will supply and install the Attic
Fan/s to the roof to ensure against any leakage when it rains. This is peace of mind for you, the homeowner, we have fitted hundreds and hundreds of fans without any leaks to tiled and colour bond roofs and the results are incredible! Solar Powered roof Fans rather than “Whirlybirds”? Both products work very differently, however, which is the better option? The amount of air extracted by a Solar Powered roof Fan (around 2,500 cubic metres of hot air and moisture per hour on a sunny day) is roughly 15 times what a Whirlybird would extract (at around 100 – 150 cubic metres per hour in slight to moderate wind conditions). Whirly Birds essentially work well in areas prone to continual moderate wind conditions. However, when the wind stops, the effectiveness of the Whirly Bird is compromised and it
may have little or no effect. By comparison, the Solar Powered Attic fan simply requires sunlight, just like a normal rooftop Photovoltaic (PV) system. The PV panel will provide the energy to the DC motor and the attic fan will continue to extract hot and moist air from the roof cavity. Solar Powered roof Fans are constructed using highquality weather resistant “Brushless DC Motor” for long, trouble-free life, capable of withstanding our weather conditions. The brushless DC motor has a 5-year warranty to give you peace of mind. Other manufacturers only offer a 2-year warranty on their DC motors. If you would like to know more or get a quote on our solar powered roof fans then please call 0499 642 701. Or make an appointment to meet at our shop at Bongaree.

Where the HELL am I?? Compiled by VMRBI Coxswain Simon Middap. Map Datum for GPS Newbies (or “Getting help, in time, and to the right place”) Let’s talk definitions: GPS is the Global Position System, an electronic device that pinpoints where you are on the globe, it could be via your smartphone, car satnav, or a specific marine device. Datum – is defined as a single piece of information. In the context of this article, we are referring to global position datum, a point somewhere on the globe defined by longitude and latitude coordinates. There are three Australian datum sets and one global datum set. They are AGD66, AGD84, GDA94 and WGS84 (World Geodetic System 1984). God help the dyslexic, but you can see how the confusion arises!! P.S. there is a new one on the way GDA2020. The reason these change, and are updated, is that Australia is moving in a north easterly direction at a rate of about 7 cm per year, meaning the latitude and longitude of points in Australia, measured in a world-wide system, are changing slowly but constantly.
www.thebribieislander.com.au
WGS84 is a standard for use in cartography, geodesy, and satellite navigation, so for consistency WGS84 is the standard on most GPS and the one used in marine conversations. For a greater accuracy than degrees, which could be between 20kms to 120kms apart, the coordinate is broken down to degrees, minutes and even further. ANOTHER area of confusion is that Coordinates can be displayed in three different formats:
Latitude lines measured in degrees, run around the world (sphere) in east-west degrees with zero degrees being the equator. They run parallel to each other. As you go further north or south from the equator toward a pole, latitude values increase but the distance between the latitude line decreases. The north and south poles are measured as 90° N and 90° S. An easy way to remember which is Latitude – remember – “LAT” is “FLAT”. Other specific latitude lines are the Tropic Latitudes of Cancer(north) and Capricorn(south) These are measured as 23.5° N and S respectively. The other special lines are the Arctic Circle(north) and Antarctic Circle (south) measured as 66.5° N and S respectively. In our part of the world, Latitude is a number denoted with an S for south of the equator (sometimes also shown as a negative number). Longitude lines also measured in degrees, run around the world (sphere) north-south and are NOT parallel to each other. Longitude runs 0–180° east and 0–180° west of the prime meridian point – with zero degrees - Greenwich England. Each of the longitude lines all intersect at the poles.
Longitude and Latitude. As you know, the earth is a sphere, and these are the measurement lines that circulate the earth. 66
In our part of the world, Longitude is a number denoted with an E for east of the prime meridian (or a positive number).
The Bribie Islander
- DMS - Degrees, minutes and seconds; - DMD - Degrees, minutes and decimal minutes; or - DD - decimal Degrees. Each one of these coordinate’s displays should be the same point on the earth, the trick is knowing which one is being displayed to accurately relate it to a map. Measured degrees of latitudinal lines are parallel, so 1° = 60 nautical miles (1nm = 1852 meters) Longitude lines start at the equator as 1° = 60nm but this decreases the closer to the poles. For greater precision and using DMS, degrees are divided into 60 minutes (‘) of distance (not time). Each minute is further divided into 60 seconds (“). Some GPS devices, especially smartphones using DMD show tenths of a minute, or decimal minutes instead of seconds. A tenth of a minute (or tenth of a nautical mile) is about 600 feet or 185 meters.
VOLUNTEER MARINE RESCUE - REGULAR FEATURE For all practical purposes, set your devices to WGS84 and set to DMD (Degrees, Minutes, Decimal minutes) Why is this important – when in trouble – tell VMR your GPS coordinates and we will come directly to you. GPS verification marks are installed at a lot of boat ramps to allow boaters to check the accuracy of their GPS navigation equipment or smartphone. On arrival, as a part of your launch preparations, turn on your GPS and compare it to the GPS coordinates on the sign. The signs are WGS84 datum in DMD format.
see Tangalooma to the right of the vessel, because, as you can see, that is still a very big search area, so further information is required to locate you quickly.
Own a Boat?
You can join VMR Bribie Island online at www. vmrbribie.com, phone (07) 3408 7596 or call in person at Marine Parade Bellara, benefits include: breakdown assistance. vessel & contact details recorded in our database in case of emergency, access to first aid, radio, and navigation courses plus safety and general boating information sessions; regular social events; reimbursement up to $100/per year for tows by other VMR or Coastguard units; and overnight/weekend secure car & trailer parking at the base.
If reporting your position to VMR or someone else on the water where there are no landmarks, find the vessel’s current location on the chart and press the vessel indicator. Your unit should give you the Lat/Long coordinates or ask you to create a Waypoint, which will have a Lat/Long coordinate. The format of DMS, DMD or DD will be controlled through the GPS setup options.
Always remember to LOG ON and LOG OFF with MARINE RESCUE BRIBIE for your safety.
Don’t have GPS coordinates – there is still other information on the horizon to guide us directly to you. Without a GPS, or to verify what the GPS is saying, you can get a compass bearing on three different known landmarks on the horizon. These can be then fixed on a position on the chart. If you don’t have a handheld compass or can’t use the compass App on your smartphone, position the bow of the vessel lining up the bow with each of the landmarks and take a reading from the vessel’s standard compass.
Congratulations Scott Langham on your promotion to crew, Commodore Liz Radajewski presents his Crew epaulettes.
A MASSIVE THANK YOU once again to the Sandstone Point Hotel for your amazing support and generous donation of $12,000. Thanks again to VMRBI members who participate in parking control for the Red Hot Summer Tour events, we can’t emphasise enough the importance of your continued amazing support to the operation of our organisation.

Ramp Etiquette - Good boat ramp etiquette starts before you even get there, with your preparation at home. You don’t want to be sitting at the bottom of the ramp fixing and organizing things that could have been done earlier, as you’re just going to frustrate others who are trying to use the ramp. Please be considerate. Cheryl Robinson is presented with her 10-year service badge by Commodore Liz Radajewski at the March Sunset Drinks on Friday 29th March 2019.
Other information you should be gathering when travelling is compass direction (Magnetic Degrees), general speed (Kilometres or Nautical Miles per hour) and time of travel (Minutes). These three pieces of information are also very valuable in finding you and will be the subject of another article. It is no point telling VMR, or others that you are several kilometres to the west of Tangalooma, or you can

FISHING REPORT Squid caught at the Bribie Bridge
FISHING W
ell, the school holidays have begun let’s hope the weather, brings us some beautiful days, so we can get out amongst the fish in the Pumicestone passage and on the Surfside.
We have seen a few Mud crabs about Ningi Creek, Donnybrook, Toorbul and in the Banksia Beach Canals, as well as Sand crabs at Bongaree with plenty being caught at Lime Pocket, so grab your pots and some Cole Bartley Bribie Bridge 97cm Dew caught on Live Squid Lives at Ningi
By Rick Williams Mullet Heads and you will be sure to get a good feed for Easter. There has been a few Snapper about with some good size being caught at Cape Moreton, The Ripples, Sandstone Point and Bellara you will need some Pilchards to hook on and always remember let the bait float don’t sink it, they like to remain on the surface when looking for a feed. One of our regular anglers tried the Ningi Creek yesterday snaring himself five Bream and a good size flathead and also a cod, he was using mullet fillets to catch the Bream, Cod and Flathead. You can also get a few Bream about at Banksia Beach, Gallaghers, Poverty Creek, Donnybrook, Turners Camp, Bellara, Bongaree and Red Beach biting on the usual Prawns, Live Blood Worms and Yabbies. We have seen some Flathead about Avon Wrecks, Turners Camp, Gallaghers, IGA Bongaree and Bellara with some biting on Mullet fillets and Squid. Whiting are still on the bite, Turners Camp, Red

I have been talking to some anglers and the surfside is proving a good place to catch some good size Whiting and Dart at 1st, 2nd, 3rd lagoon in front of the Campsites, you will need Pippies for the Dart and Preserved beach worms for the Whiting . If you head out to The Bird Cage or even on the surfside at 2nd Lagoon and 3rd Lagoon the Mackerel are on the bite, pick up some Pilchards for a good feed. You will get a lot a squid near the Bribie bridge at night, great to use for live bait. We have also seen that some anglers have caught Dew off the Bribie Bridge with squid being the best bait. Before we take the kids out on the boat for the holidays please check all your safety gear and make sure all your flares are in date.

FISH KILL AT BEACHMERE Can’t beat fresh whiting fillets
By Dr Ben Diggles
T
he recent algae bloom in Beachmere Lake is believed to be the cause of yet another fish kill. This latest kill has seen the demise of over an estimated 30,000 fish of various species. OzFish Unlimited volunteers alongside local recreational fisho’s worked hard to save the last survivors. They include Mangrove Jack up to 70cm, Estuary Cod to 80cm, Milkfish to a metre, Tarpon to 60cm and Bream to 40cm as well as dozens of Mullet up to 3kg.
Local OzFish Project Manager Ben Diggles said, “It’s so sad to see some many fish gone, however, it’s been fantastic to see local residents and fisho’s rallying together.”
Black spot estuary cod saved and released by Jay. Too late for this big cod
The local council is working to identify and rectify the problem in the short term and re-establish water flow into the lake. Long-term OzFish Unlimited hope to be able to work with council engineers to develop a more permanent solution to repair and restore this vital and highly productive fish nursery in the Moreton Bay area.

BEACH
REPORT
By Michael & Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours
Hi from Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery tours.
We continue our session on the use of snatch straps, a piece of equipment that most 4WD enthusiasts already have.
To start with let’s look at the recovery points on your vehicle. Don’t trust bullbars, towbars or recovery points without checking the mounting bolts these can be rusted making them lethal projectiles. If there is any uncertainty, attach around the chassis rail of the vehicle. With respect to towbars, if you are sure the bolts are sound, these make a reasonable recovery point however don’t use the tongue or ball, these can fail.
We recently did a recovery wrapping around the shank of a solid steel Toyota tow hitch, these are rated at eight tonnes and can be used, alternatively purchase a towbar recovery hitch. Remember, keep everyone well clear whilst effecting a recovery as the kinetic energy in that snatch strap is lethal. If you need to use more than one strap or as points to attach to the vehicles we recommend Dimenia rope shackles (pictured). These Fort Bribie fallen mine control hut fell two weeks ago
T
he recent soaking rains have brought a new lease of life to the flora and fauna in our National Park and have firmed up the inland track considerably. The storm birds (shortbilled Curlew) and Ibis are out in force at Poverty Creek. The Westaway Creek catchment wetlands are now reinvigorated with approximately half a metre of water, the water lilies are now an absolute spectacle. Whatever you do don’t forget to bring your insect repellent as the mosquitoes are out and about.

are not expensive but if something goes wrong it’s not a metal object flying through the air. We recommend the use of dampeners and if you don’t have one drop a wet towel or jacket over the snatch strap. Most people have 8 or 9-tonne snatch straps and we recommend 15-tonne snatch straps, discard straps immediately if damaged. Pick the direction which you are going to effect the recovery. Look for the hard surface to end the recovery. Reverse your recovery vehicle to 1.5 metres away from the bogged vehicle and drive forward towards the hard area or at least 30 metres. Driving back
REGULAR FEATURE and forward several times over this area to pack the sand down for better traction. Ensure that there are no passengers in either vehicle, ensure everyone is at a safe distance, lay the strap out, attach to your recovery points, if possible passenger side to passenger side, should anything go wrong the strap will recoil to the passenger side of the vehicle and not to the driver’s side. Next, drive off as you were heading off down the highway (no wheel spin) the strap will stretch and kinetic energy will cause the bogged vehicle to pop up on top of the sand, keep driving to clear the soft section. Remember to check everyone’s tyres are at 18 to 20 PSI, if towing a trailer
Short-billed Curlew
Damaged snatch strap,
Dyneema rope joiners, ensure it has the same track width as the tow vehicle. Holidays mean kids on the beach and campsites, remember 30km speed limits.
Get out and get amongst it!!!!
Last Issue’s question:
As winter approaches sand disappears from the beach making it like riding a rollercoaster, simply slow down there is no other answer.
Name the Bribie Island Lagoons from south to north?
When parking on the beach at high tide consider other vehicles who want to pass, they don’t want to have to drive in the salt water.
This Week’s
Fishing in the gutters will deliver whiting, dart 30cm, queenfish 50cm, mackerel 60cm.

WOOMBYE NO MATCH FOR OUR TIGRESS’S Match Report - Senior Women vs Woombye FC By Brad Litchfield
The Bribie Tigress’s made their way up to a soggy Woombye field on Friday night to play the second Woombye team and whilst most grounds on the Sunshine Coast were closed the Bribie Team
took it to the Woombye side and dominated much of the match to secure a good 4-0 win. The centre defence of Ava Curtis and Dee Jobson was outstanding, and they were able to break up most of the Woombye’s attack. Keeper Courtney Johnson’s first game of the season was a good intro into what is going to be a tough season, her talking and encouragement were a standout.

Bribie Tigers senior women’s team Super sub Amelia Wilkins played an excellent game and when she game on revitalised the attack and the Woombye defence had little energy in the tank to follow her fast attacking breaks. It was an exciting match to watch with Bribie having numerous chances to score. Tonight, player of
the match goes to centre back Ava Curtis for an outstanding effort in the centre of defence. The Tigress’s next game is the grand final rematch from last year against Caloundra, at home on the 12th April for a 7 pm kick off.

RANTS & RAVES
Dear Editor,
While shopping at Woolworths on Wednesday afternoon I mislaid my purse and did not realise until at the checkout. I went back to where I had been but no luck. As I am a pensioner it was a bit of a disaster. Then the young man at the till asked me my name. Well, he had a purse which had been handed in by two young girls. I looked all over for these two to thank them but to no avail. Please be good enough to publish this letter in the hope that they will see it. I am so very grateful to them and know their families must be proud of them. I certainly am. Thank you, ladies, and may the good Lord reward you both. Kathleen Maureem Dear Editor, I would like to comment on the article by Geoff Ginn in issue 83 to my earlier article in issue 82 about beach access on Bribie Island. I beg to differ on your point about real greenies, they do drive juices guzzlers and also live in timber houses but this is not what the main point of my conversation was about. The main point was access to the beach. Geoff Ginn has miss interpreted what I was saying, I do not want to see the beach locked up as I and many others enjoy a day on the beach , my point was the greenies want to lock us out and I said they would be the only ones then to get any enjoyment out of it but let’s see them walk in instead of driving in. Allowing myself and other RESPONSIBLE 4wd owners access to the beach helps support the environment and the local National park as we pay for this privilege and have no qualms in paying the fee. Your point of unregulated and 78

YOUR SAY uncapped vehicles during a weekend 2-day function!!! numbers not being an On New Year’s Eve we got stuck option to me is incorrect on the bridge coming home from as this can be achieved Brisbane. It took an hour from QPAC by monitoring and having to the bridge and 45 mins from the cut offs when numbers bridge to Bongaree !!!! reached on a weekend Quite what happened between the (agents having a set original “For Sale Single Residence number for purchase only” notice on the fence of the said each weekend). property and a Hotel being built, I’m
I think we could go on arguing forever but we do agree on one thing and that’s not to lock the access up. By doing this there is a lot more to be lost (funds to protect and maintain the National park).
We just need the idiots if caught to be kicked off, pass cancelled and banned from obtaining a pass for a set period. Thanks, Geoff Walsh Dear Editor We moved to Bribie 11 years ago. We had given serious consideration to Noosa and Coolum but found it far too built up and busy. Like so many other residents of this Island with similar stories “we discovered Bribie”, and it did not take us long to change our relocation plans. We fell in love with Bribie because of its peaceful, community charm, and abundant flora and fauna, being largely a Nature Reserve area. Having left our country 18 years ago and gratefully relocated to Australia, we had lost our sense of community, which we have found in abundance here on Bribie. I remember the editorial in the first Annual Bribie tourist magazine we read, scribed about “ The Bribie Sigh” which we all do when driving back across the bridge on our way home. Lately, however, that “face” is sadly changing with the creeping new developments on and in proximity to, our, hitherto “best-kept secret” Island. Bribie has been” put on the map” with the advent of the Sandstone Point Hotel, which I hasten to say, in my opinion, the buildings have been tastefully developed, thus far. However, It is the huge events taking place there that have caused most of the now inherent problems. Upwards of 5 to 8.000 concert goers all in vehicles have caused hideous traffic issues in the Bribie Road. It recently took me an hour to get from Bongaree to Bellara to visit a friend,
The Bribie Islander
unsure?? A possible explanation may be read into the recent Council’s inability to form a quorum for a vote on the Hotel’s application to increase the number of events, due to “personal conflicts of interest” on the issues on the impact the hotel has and is having on Bribie and surrounds. Our pristine beach is being overrun by “weekend 4x4 adventurers” who show little respect to its fragile ecosystem. Although we are members of the large Morton Bay Reginal Council, we are a unique and finite island on many different levels, not the least being that we are a:- Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, a Sand Island and a National Park and as such should not be treated the same as mainland council areas, with regard to development projects. I wonder just how much business is brought to the island relatively speaking, other than a cup of coffee or a “slab” here and there. Most weekend visitors all arrive on our beaches with loaded Eskies and endless pop-up shade canopies!! I suspect that 80% of all Bribie residents are of the same mind and have sat around over endless cups of coffee talking and discussing the development impact issues we are now all facing, and what is happening to our precious piece of paradise. We need a “rally round a flag” or a “voice to be heard” as it seems that our pleas and request to council go unheard or are disregarded. Personally, I think that we need to find an organisation that may have that voice I can only think that BIEPA (Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association) may be that flag if enough of us join in the fight to say “NO MORE” Yours sincerely, J Webb Bongaree (ED: edited for space)
Dear Editor, THANK YOU to Peter Dallimore (and The Bribie Islander magazine for publishing) for his excellent article about the ins and outs of funeral insurance. I have been bewildered by all the many TV advert claims and different types of ways to cover funeral costs and frankly am over them and wish they would stop. This article by Peter is a keeper in my view - clear, succinct, and on point. Regards, Adrienne Dear Editor Bribie Road and Bridge Many, perhaps the majority of people, move to Bribie and neighbouring townships as part of a lifestyle choice. It’s a family friendly location to enjoy, not just for ourselves but for our children and grandchildren as well. I think I share that experience with many local residents. I do not deny the road needs attention especially between Old Toorbul Road and the Caboolture Interchange. But, before increasing the capacity of Bribie Island Road, the residents of Ningi
have to be spared the pain that will become over and above what they are currently forced to endure. Upgrading the Bribie Bridge needs to be carefully considered also. For example, the research done for Main Roads five years ago, revealed major infrastructure problems once vehicles arrive on the island from a fourlane bridge. This is easy to predict: think of the 3 o’clock school traffic problem at the main roundabout and double or treble the congestion with the increased traffic flow from the bridge, especially over weekends. This congestion would present the Moreton Bay Regional Council with serious expenditure to overcome the problems, not to mention the property resumptions required. And, after a new bridge is constructed there would no doubt be increasing calls for opening up the island to further residential developments. Consider the calls we have now from some to replace the council caravan park with high-rise apartments or to demolish the strips of shops along Welsby Parade, the latest report being for a six-storey apartment complex.
There will be pressure to open up the forestry for major developments. Do we want to recreate the high-rise coastal strips seen at the Gold Coast or Mooloolaba and Caloundra? And finally, how prepared are people to pay a toll to use the new bridge - a common action taken when new infrastructure is completed. At present rates, the toll would be around $2.50 for private vehicles and $5.00 for tradies and other commercials. As I said at the beginning, “Living on Bribie is a lifestyle choice.” So, consider carefully what some people wish for. Paul Lupton, Bribie Island
