The Bribie Islander
WHO IS LOOKING AFTER OUR WILDLIFE?
O
ur cover story this issue reminds us that there are some genuinely selfless people in the world who care deeply for our wildlife. Quite often at great personal and financial cost.
To these magnificent human beings, the reward of first saving then helping a creature recover to a point where it can take its place back in the natural environment is much more rewarding to them than any monetary gain can bring. Bribie Island is blessed to have a vocal and important collective of individuals within its community that care passionately for the natural environment and go about in a practical way to make a difference. These fellow Bribie Islanders are not your six o’clock news protesters or Facebook eco-warriors but rather are the down to earth next door neighbour types who will walk along the
beach or through a national park and purposely pick up and remove the odd plastic bag or a stray bit of fishing line tackle. Thus ensuring that someone else’s thoughtless action doesn’t end up harming some innocent creature.
While very few of us will ever have to physically rescue a creature in the wild it is heartening to know that there are those within our community who will take up the challenge. Good on the Twinnies and the VMR for coming to the rescue of the injured pelican. And good on you, when you take the trouble to pick up the odd bit of litter or detritus that can be fatal to an unsuspecting creature in the wild. You too can make a difference to the world around you in so many little ways. Why not make a start today?

TWINNIES AND VMR TO THE RESCUE! O
By John Traill
n Wednesday 15th May this year, a member of the public had noticed an injured Pelican and
reported it to the Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue. The Twinnies, Paula and Bridgette Powers, identical twins, have been rescuing and treating pelicans and

sea birds on the sunshine coast for more than 16 Years! In that time the Twinnies have helped thousands of birds from numerous species all across the coast! Their rehabilitation facility is located at 2147 Steve Irwin Way, Landsborough. The Twinnies came down to investigate and found after much searching with binoculars the injured pelican on a sandbank to the North of the Volunteer Marine Rescue Base and in the middle of the
Pumicestone Passage. The VMR rescue vessel Jonkers Bribie 3 was then tasked to take the Twinnies to the injured bird on the sandbank, using fish donated by the Sylvan Beach Seafood Cafe to assist with its capture. After persistent efforts to catch the injured pelican, the Twinnies finally succeeded and it was swiftly taken off to the Twinnies sanctuary on the Sunshine Coast for hook and line entanglement removal from her leg, other wound management and subsequent rehabilitation. The Twinnies later advised that “she has settled in well

PREPARATION KEY TO EMERGENCY RESPONSE
W
hen disaster strikes, either by natural or man-made means, it is what happens immediately after the initial event that sets the scene for the effectiveness of any response.
Bribie Islanders have been blessed that we have not had to deal with that many major incidents over the years. Those that we have had, such as the bush fires and brush with cyclone OMA earlier this year were dealt with very effectively by our emergency services teams on the ground, in the air and on the water. The Bribie Islander recently caught up with another milestone in the protection
of our beautiful island and the surrounding region with the local sign off by each emergency services person responsible for working together on any future combined emergency response that affects our region. The occasion that brought all the key players together was the signing of the recently reviewed and updated Bribie Island Emergency Services MultiAgency Response Plan.
This is the critical planning document that underpins any coordinated emergency response to an incident that happens on the island where more than one emergency service is required.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Station Officer Bribie Island Wayne Brown said that the document is a practical working guide that has been reviewed and updated to ensure the correct resources are employed in any given emergency across a number of different emergency service areas. The Bribie Island Emergency Services Multi Agency Response Plan document has been signed off by members of the Bribie Island Emergency Management Group. The attending group was comprised of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Station Officer
Bribie Island Wayne Brown, Queensland Police Service Officer In Charge Bribie Island Senior Sergeant Lyndal Wiggins, Queensland Ambulance Service Officer In Charge Bribie Island Jarred Thorne, Qld Parks & Wildlife Services Officer In Charge Bribie Island Brendan McLarty and Cheryn Kelly, VMRBI Vice Commodore Ces Luscombe VMRBI Secretary Gary Voss. Given the often challenging nature of responding to emergencies in the off-road area, (around 86 percent of the island is made up of environmental and national marine parks) the BIEMG meets regularly and conducts exercises to prepare for reallife emergencies should they occur. Wayne said that later in the year it is planned that all agencies will join together during an exercise to simulate a disaster situation. The exercise will allow the group to utilise their specific skills to respond, practice and refine their disaster training recovery techniques. Wayne said that these exercises are very important to ensure that our local emergency services agencies are well prepared to respond to incidents in the Bribie Island area.

Depression. Butts initially called the game ‘Lexiko’ and later changed the name to ‘Criss Cross Words’. Butts looked for buyers but wasn’t successful. Eventually, in 1948, he sold the rights to entrepreneur and game-lover James Brunot, who made a few minor adjustments to the design and renamed the game Scrabble. This is the game we play today. Unlike many other games – eg Monopoly – scrabble generally does not create undue angst amongst players – but boards can accidentally suffer at the hands of those who may feel their lexicon is broader than others in the game. On Thursday, 20 June 2019, Bribie Rotary will hold its third annual Scrabble night at the Bribie Island Retirement Village in Foley Street, Bongaree. The night commences at 6 pm and a yummy soup and sandwich supper is served by our members. Many can attest to the fact that our PresidentElect, Jeff Eustace, is a soup server extraordinaire. Entry into the competition costs $20 per person and the winner receives a $100
Scrabble is a simple game built on words – the letters are worth a set value but may gain more points by being placed on certain squares eg an “s” may be worth one point but placed on a triple letter or triple word square, it can be worth much more. The word “scrabble”, in its simplest form, is worth 14 points, but if it gains a triple word – with perhaps some triple letter scores, its value goes up exponentially. If you don’t play scrabble other games such as dominos, five hundred and mahjong are available. Entry fee for these games is $15 but no prize is given for playing these games. However, you do get to join in the fun and have the soup (6 points) supper (10 points) - what more could you ask for on a winter’s night! Today more than 150 million Scrabble sets have been sold. It has found its way into one in three American homes and an estimated 30,000 games are started around the world every hour. There are different versions including “dirty” Scrabble.
A Shelter Box costs $1,000
of Shelterbox. This Award formally acknowledges the support that our Club provides in helping families that are left without shelter. Natural and other disasters are inevitable and frequent, and the need is continuous. So, forget your screens, stop texting, abbreviating words and sending emojis, and come and join us. Appreciate the fun of using some old fashioned
communication skills such as voice, smiles and eye contact. See if you can make words such as ‘oxyphenbutazone’ which scored 1778 points, or ‘quizzify’ (using a blank for the second z) which scored 419. It’s not in the winning of scrabble that brings the fun – it’s in the playing. As Mary Poppins might have said – it’s a “supercalifragilistic-
expialidocious” game! Mind you, this word may not be in the scrabble dictionary – or might it? For more information please contact Heather White by phone: 5497 5818 or email: mchcblanc@ bigpond.com or phone 5497 5818. Heather will also send you an entry form if you email her.
President Elect and Soup Server Extraordinaire Jeff Eustace However, our rules are strict and unless the word is in the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary it is not acceptable. We even have a list of acceptable two-letter words to ensure there are no scrabble squabbles over interesting little words such as za, qi, mm, ba, ki and ef. It is a simple game that the whole family can enjoy and is indeed a wonderful way to teach children to read and write. Proceeds from the night will go to Shelterbox who are project partners with Rotary. Together we provide emergency shelter and tools for families who have lost their homes through disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and fires. Rotarians all over the world support Shelterbox by raising funds and providing support on the ground during responses to a disaster. This partnership enables Shelterbox to cross boundaries and cut through red tape to reach even the most remote communities. Through this annual fundraiser and the commitment of honorary Rotarian, Heather White, Bribie Rotary is now a bronze champion ISSUE 89 | 7 JUNE 2019

REGULAR FEATURE Alexis Sawford and Susie. Unbelievable performers. will be doing his final performance at the July Locals Show. Throughout the day, there were many memorable moments including the return of alternative Country Rock Band, Erin May. These folks have astounded our audiences with their original songs and music, but what the crowd doesn’t know is that all their music is original, mainly written by Kirk Jeff’s, former international cricketer and now a recording artist.

When they first appeared at Locals Only, they set tongues wagging with their eclectic and original sound. A few months later, they held their CD launch at Blueys. What a great album it is, too. Since then, they’ve been working on the next recording and if their music is as good as it was on Sunday afternoon, then the

Last month’s favourite artist, 12-year-old and very talented Kiani Jazz took to the stage to do a couple of numbers which she performed with such dexterity that she received two encores. The show heralded the return of Malcolm Smith, an Englishman, who began his Australian musical journey with a gig at Blueys,40 years ago in the area where the bistro now operates. He did a pleasing set of songs and ended his set with a solo performance of Parchman Farm on the Blues Harp. Sadly, Malcolm is leaving the area to go to WA to become a Perthling. He

next album will be very much worth buying. The organisers of Locals have watched this great band evolve over less than two years. Well done !!. Amongst the other artists on the show, were a great new band...The Mangroves with Dan Burns, Peter Gretsch, Selwyn and Dave Moore. Very entertaining group and one to watch out for next show. They also looked the part in flowery shirts and cheeky repartee with the audience. Before I go any further, I’d like to mention the return of Gentleman John Girgenti, the WhamBam’s resident drummer after a break. It’s really pleasing for all the performers to have an excellent drummer behind them. Last Sunday, we had three of them. Selwyn, our ‘go to’ drummer, who filled in brilliantly for John....and a young bloke named Jarrod of whom John spoke very encouragingly. We heard that John has approached Jarrod’s parents, with a view of mentoring him on the drums...and friends, that’s really what Locals Only is all about. Some of the younger artists who’ve been on our stage were mentored by MaryAnne Cannon and Keith Haigh and a lot of those younger artists have gone on to a musical career. On the subject of new bands and Jarrod, Frankie and Molly’s Gonzo Zonk band, which features Jarrod on drums played a brilliant set of songs that we’ve not heard them perform before. In spite of some sound difficulties, they performed proudly and professionally. In the midst of the sound problems, young Jarrod stood up behind the drumkit and told a really funny musical joke which went over very well. Well done to Gonzo Zonk and their new music.
12 year old Kiani Jazz A big shout out for the bluesman Col Shields who, since the first Locals Show, has always rocked the beer garden and had crowds up on the dance floor and he did it again with no effort, again, last Sunday. The next Locals Only Show is on the 30th June and is the EOFY show and will feature a very special guest artist or two, plus the usual suspects. In other news... Jenine Williams’ new recording, “Womanjika Park’ is up on YouTube and on Jenine’s Facebook page. It’s a very good piece of music and has great lyrics. Jenine is one of the popular ladies who perform at Locals. Endless Valley is still hard at it, mixing work, rehearsal and a whole lot of gigs to their name, to great acclaim and are developing a huge fan base all over South East Queensland. They’ve just been invited to appear at the Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre (BMAC)
in Ipswich, so the lads are really getting around. We are looking forward to the return of Rhino Kennedy to our stage again, in the very near future. He’s been attending Music College and doing very well. Coming soon to Blueys... 5th July... one more chance to see the act that everyone is talking about. Alexis Sawford and Susie return from 5pm9pm. This is a show for musicians and music lovers alike. Their repertoire spans many genres and Alexis’s fine guitar work and both their voices are something to see. See the Upcoming Events column to see all the rest of the surprises that Blueys has to offer. To our ever growing audiences at Locals Only, a hearty Thank You, for your support of both our show and the wonderful venue that hosts it. See you next month.

to thoroughly ensure the client’s eyes are healthy as they can be which may involve some pathology testing. He says the equipment they use on site allows for any investigative optometry where they may have to refer patients to specialists meaning they look at the “whole picture” when it comes to eye health. “We are a local family and have enjoyed providing great service in all that we do at ‘Eye Envy’, and will continue for many more years to come,” said the couple.

WINELANDER Doctor Doctor give me the news, I prescribe medicine and also make booze. Doctors around Australia have been vineyard owners and winemakers since the early days of grape growing here in Australia. Remember the catchy tune “You make us smile Dr Lindeman” well Dr Henry Lindeman was one of a number of doctors who prescribed wine for all kinds of ailments such as cancer, flatulence and the plague. Dr Lindeman who grew his grapes in The Hunter Valley New South Wales, Dr Christopher Penfold in Magill South Australia and Dr William Angove of Tea Tree Gully South Australia all continued practicing as doctors and surgeons while developing their vineyards each for medicinal purposes but incidentally becoming very successful 20
owners of wine brands that continue to shape the industry today. Other Doctors, not necessarily doctors of medicine, who have made a significant impact on Australian wines are Dr Max Lake of Lakes Folly, Dr John Middleton of Mount Mary, Dr Bailey Carrodus of Yarra Yering and in the west Dr John Gladstones who recognised the value of grape growing in the Margaret River region, Dr Kevin Cullen and Dr Tom Cullity of Vasse Felix. Even today many doctors are still involved in vineyard ownership among them is Dr Richard Hamilton who owns both Leconfield from the Coonawarra and Richard Hamilton Wines from McLaren Vale in South Australia both of which produce superb wines, I had the pleasure of representing Richard Hamilton Wines in the 1990’s and the red wines were always outstanding. liquor licencing laws in Queensland which have led indirectly to Woolworths “The fresh food people” having a massive influence in the gambling industry. Some years ago Queensland didn’t have liquor stores only drive-ins attached to hotels and taverns and in an attempt to prevent Woolworths and Coles entering the liquor market in Queensland it was decided to that if liquor stores were to be allowed to trade they would have their licences also attached to hotels and taverns, with a limit of four per outlet within eight kilometres of that venue. This, of course, had nothing to do with the fact that a number of politicians owned hotels in the state and didn’t want any competition from Woolworths or Coles, but they underestimated the might of Woolworths who proceeded to buy the hotels, initially to get control of the liquor outlets, but as a bonanza
By Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au also received the takings from the gaming rooms. Not to be outdone Coles also entered the market and this is why between the two grocery giants most of the major hotels around the state are under their control, although just recently Coles have sold the running of the hotels in Queensland to The Australian Venue Group but will concentrate on the liquor outlets. The remaining hotels are owned by wealthy families or groups who also benefit from these laws and which also prevent companies such as Aldi and Costco applying for a licence because they have no intention of buying a hotel and within the next couple of years. A new player Kaufland will enter the grocery market and they will too be denied a licence here in Queensland. Also affected are small operators such as you and me from getting a licence unless of course, we were in a position to buy a hotel.

ADOPTING A NONNA MAKES A DIFFERENCE
C
o.As.It. Community Services “Adopt a Nonna or Nonno” Program was first launched in December 2018 in an effort to attract young people who wished to make a difference in the lives of lonely seniors who were in need of social support. The young volunteers who joined the program have been teamed up with a “Nonna” or “Nonno” in their local area and the results have been incredibly heartwarming, to say the least. “The younger volunteers are so full of enthusiasm,” said Sarina Campbell, the Community Visitors Scheme Coordinator. “One of our ‘nonna’s’ asked if
her volunteer would be her ‘grandchild’ and she hugged her and started crying – it was so amazing to witness,” she said. The volunteers who have applied to the program, aged between 18 and 34, are making a positive impact in the lives of older, lonely and isolated community members from the multicultural community. The program is funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Health, the program offers friendship and social support to elderly and socially isolated people from a CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) background living

Milena Gozzo (left) with Agata Lentini (right) in the community, in both their own homes and aged care facilities. The service runs in many Brisbane suburbs and now Bribie. “The Adopt a Nonna or Nonno Program is a great way to connect millennials with our most vulnerable older community members, their family members, and it provides a mutual benefit to all involved – and we are always looking for more volunteers,” said Sarina. “We have found that visits from a youthful companion enliven our community members, whilst the opportunity practise speaking Italian or Spanish, or to learn a little about the history of migrants in Queensland is a great opportunity for the volunteers.” Campbell explained that the program is always eager to welcome Italian or Spanish speaking individuals who are willing to volunteer an hour a
fortnight to visit elderly community members who are lonely and in need of a little company. Volunteers attend training sessions conducted by Co.As.It. which identify care-specific areas relevant to the nonna or nonno they’ve been matched with. They’re also provided with all the relevant guidelines about the program and their role as volunteers. Ongoing support and monitoring of visits is offered, so volunteers won’t ever feel out of their depth. The program is highly flexible, and visits are arranged at the mutual convenience of both the client and the volunteer. By assisting an older person on a social level, you have the chance to make a difference in their life as well as in your own! Lesley and Jim have both been members of Queensland and Australian representative Karate teams, their first World Titles entry coming as part of the Australian team in Brisbane in 1985. RECORD ENTRIES PUSH BRIBIE REGATTA TO NO.1 By Dr Doug Wilson
W
ith record-breaking numbers of boats and spectators, the 21st Bribie Island Classic Boat Regatta is over for another year. The success due to all contributors and participants both on land and water and particularly the members of Bribie Island Sailing Club and the Bribie Island Mahalo Outrigger Canoe Club who hosted the weekend. Registrations for the event totalled 73 (40% up on last year) making it is now the largest regatta of its type in Queensland.
With the great camaraderie inspired by the perfect weather, on Saturday, the flotilla cruised to the Toorbul for lunch and later to Star Pacific Harbour Marina. There the public enjoyed a close view of the larger boats (and the smaller ones including a display of Radio Controlled Yachts) there while listening to the jaunty Bribie Celtic Strings playing and with afternoon tea provided by the Bribie Vietnam Vets Association.

GREY SHRIKE THRUSH
– COLLURICINCLA HARMONICA By Marj Webber
G
rey Shrike-thrushes are moderately common on Bribie Island in forest areas and occasionally venture into suburbia. Their melodious call is often a signal that this rather plain bird is nearby. Throughout Australia there are several variations with colouring differing slightly in each area. The birds we are likely to see on Bribie have a rather drab colouring with greyish brown backs and pale grey undersides. Heads are thick and bills are black. There is not a lot of difference between male and female in our area except the females have more heavily streaked throats and breasts and the males have a white patch in front of the eye. They are 22-25 cm in length and weigh 70-84 g. Grey Shrikethrushes have some of the most beautiful and varied calls in Australia. Also known as the Harmonious Thrush they have over a hundred clear, sharp and melodious songs. In 32
Australia there are four species of Shrike-thrush with the Grey being the most widespread. The only other species we are likely to see on Bribie island is the Little Shrike-thrush which is much smaller, a lovely rufous colour and a fairly common resident. Grey Shrike-thrushes can live in most parts of Australia and in very diverse habitats such as wooded coastal areas, tropical areas and arid areas of the interior where there are trees and water. They are also found in PNG. Usually they stay in pairs and remain in the same territory which is about 10 hectares for their entire lives. Grey Shrike-thrushes can become quite used to people and will often come into a garden for a drink of water or come to the balcony of a restaurant looking for handouts. A large variety of food is on the menu as they are omnivores which eat meat as well as vegetable matter. Invertebrates,

small reptiles, frogs, mice, nestlings and eggs of other birds and sometimes seeds and fruit are just some of items on their varied diet. They usually feed on the ground, scratching around in the undergrowth and around rotting timber, but will feed in foliage in trees and under bark looking for insects and larvae. Breeding takes place from July to March or after rain in arid regions. Nest sites are well hidden and quite varied and may be built in shallow hollows in trees, in stumps, crevices on cliff faces and in logs on forest floors. Shrikethrushes have even been known to nest in parks and in hanging pots in gardens. Nests are in the shape of bowls built of bark strips and lined with fine material found in the area. Clutches of 2-4 creamy, blotched eggs are laid. Males help with the nest building, incubation of 17-18 days and tending the young. Nestlings fledge in about 17 days and there could be several clutches produced during the season if conditions are right.
The same nest sites are sometimes used year after year. Parents generally stay together for life. A common name amongst birdwatchers is GST (Grey Shrike-Thrush). They were given the scientific name Harmonica from the Latin meaning “skilled in music” and Colluricincla which is derived from two Greek words meaning “shrike”. Oddly enough they are neither Shrikes nor Thrushes but were called “Shrikes” because of their predatory bills and “Thrushes” after the melodious Thrushes of Europe. They belong to the same family as the Whistlers and Shrike-tits and were studied and catalogued by John Latham in 1802. John Latham contributed largely to our early ornithology knowledge and first documented many of the birds in the late 1700s and early 1800s. They are often attacked by other birds because of their tendency to raid nests for eggs and chicks. Because they feed mainly on the ground their main threats are from cats, dogs and foxes. Feral cats are a huge problem in Australia with an estimated 6.3 million occupying our wild and suburban areas. If one cat eats one bird each day that is over six million birds eaten every day in the wild and if it were only half that number, it is still an enormous daily loss of wildlife. This is a huge problem to the bird and small mammal world. Grey Shrike-thrush’s conservation status is secure but in some areas they appear to be on the decline.

HEALTHY By Heenam Kim
Why Do We Get Fat? MCT Oil (medium chain triglyceride) great for weight loss, ‘natural fuel’ for the body and brain. MCT oil is a great source of healthy fats that can help improve sports performance, cognitive ability, gut and heart health. A new hormone that plays a big role in weight regulation is leptin. Leptin exists in fat cells and it tells your brain that you’re full. For so many of us, the signal isn’t working. We have become leptin resistant. Insulin blocks leptin receptors. This is called insulin resistance and is essentially Type 2 Diabetes. The easiest and safest way to reduce the amount of insulin in your body is to reduce carbohydrate intake. (The Ketogenic Diet in a Nutshell, Science and Strategy for Optimum Health by Carl Franklin and Richard Morris) The Ketogenic diet, in a nutshell, is a reduced carb intake and change with high fat and protein diet. We want our body to be Ketosis, then your body will burn the fat that is already stored in your body before it craves more food. Personally, I don’t like any form of diet because I love food! Restricting me with food means taking my happiness away from my life, so that’s a big no-no for me. However, regardless of this diet, I’ve started taking just MCT coffee to test it 34
out. I didn’t expect much, but I quite liked the MCT coffee mix even though it was far from a real coffee taste. When the MCT coffee mix ran out, I made my own mix with MCT oil and gelatin powder with my coffee.
When I took the MCT oil in my coffee for the first day, I probably put too much oil in it, and I experienced a severe stomach cramp for an hour and had the runs all day… Though the next day, I felt lighter and better. I’ve since reduced the MCT oil intake in my coffee, started with half a teaspoon after the incident, but now I’ve increased to one teaspoon, with one teaspoon of gelatin in my coffee every morning. Immediately after taking MCT oil, I have less hunger so, I eat less… my food portion has reduced to one third! I’ve been doing this for about four weeks now and I can feel that I’m losing a lot of weight quickly. Basically, what MCT oil does, is it changes our body into a Ketosis system, and instead of the body craving carbs to burn for the energy, it uses fat to produce energy. Since I’ve been taking MCT coffee in the morning, I’ve lost the craving for sugar and starches and eat less because leptin is able to do its job. MCT (medium chain triglyceride) oil is extracted from coconut oil. It is constructed with a shorter chain of carbon atoms, between 6 to 10. The usual oil we consume is LCT

(Long chain triglyceride) is a longer chain of carbon atoms, between 12 to 20. It’s hard to break down and is often stored in our cells as fat. Triglyceride is the technical term for fat. There are two things that triglycerides do in the body. One thing is that they go into the cells and can be used to burn fat as energy and the other is stored in the cells as fat. Because MCT oil is a shorter chain, it makes easier to digest and absorbs faster and easily converted into energy and it changes our body into Ketosis system. Therefore, MCTs are efficiently
burned and don’t get stored as body fat which creates more energy and gives us fulfilment. I found that MCT oil is fascinating and that I’m losing weight rapidly without changing my lifestyle.

HALL UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT
B
ribie Respite and Support Services has resumed management of the Senior Citizens Hall on its site, a building it has owned for 30 years.
Bribie Respite and Support Services has trusteeship of the land on which it sits at 96-108 Arcadia Avenue, Woorim, from the QLD State Government but it owns all the buildings on that land. For a few years, the Senior Citizens Hall and its activities have been managed by the Bribie District All Age Social Activities Centre Inc (BAC). BAC has facilitated a variety of activities from the hall, including carpet bowls, dancing, table tennis and Voices choral group. Those activities will be continued under BRASS’ management, with no immediate interruption to the schedule. As part of its new management BRASS will refurbish the hall, which is in a state of some disrepair, and install air conditioning so that users will have a safe, clean and pleasant environment
in which to pursue their leisure activities.
The site at Arcadia Avenue is a hub for important community services on Bribie Island. Bribie Respite and Support Services runs a Learning Centre for young people with a disability as well as day respite services for older people and people with dementia. Bribie Meals on Wheels also operates from the site and sits alongside the Senior Citizens Hall with its full program of leisure activities. Bribie Respite and Support Services is deeply embedded in the community and has a long history of caring for older and disabled people on Bribie Island. It is dedicated to providing the best in respite services within a warm, community-focused setting. HISTORY
LOOKING BACK 250 YEARS James Cook & Endeavour
By Barry Clark, Bribie Island, Historical Society
In a few months’ time, we will all be preparing for the start of the year 2020, which is the 250 year Anniversary of James Cook being the first to sail and claim the East Coast of Australia in the name of King George the Third in 1770.
islands. Cook and naturalist Joseph Banks had left England in 1769 to observe the “Transit of Venus” from the remote island of Tahiti and then went on to be the first to circumnavigate and map the entire coast of New Zealand, before continuing south-east and hitting Australia. James Cook is generally regarded as having
He sailed along the east coast of Australia, landing only three times, and naming several prominent landmarks including Cape Mor(e)ton and The Glasshouses, their distant shapes reminding him of Glass Factories in his distant homeland. Cook and the crew of the Bark “Endeavour” had been sailing for nearly two years already, and they were well off the coast so did not actually see the Bay or any 36

“discovered” Australia in 1770, but several Dutch, French and Portuguese explorers had previously sailed and mapped much of the West, North and South coasts. Able Tasman has charted parts of what he named Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) and New Zealand in 1643, which was 127 years earlier, but he did not know they were close to a much larger land mass.
Frenchman Jean de Surville had also sailed quite close to the east coast of Australia a few months before Cook, and his crew reported being able to “smell land”, but they did not actually see it. De Surville and Cook also sailed almost within sight of each other at north New Zealand in December 1769, but again did not actually see each other in the vast expanse of Ocean. Australia had come very close to being claimed by the French. After returning from his first voyage in 1771 Cook went on to conduct two more significant world explorations, for a total of eleven years. What a remarkable navigator, cartographer and ship’s Captain he was. On board the “Resolution” from 1772 to 1775 he explored vast areas of the south Pacific Ocean searching for almost two years, without success for what was thought to be a “Great South Land”. He went in the “Resolution” again from 1776 to 1779 seeking a hoped-for North West Passage, around the top of North America to

find a sea route to Europe. Unable to find a passage through the frozen north he returned to Hawaii where he was killed in an unfortunate incident with the natives. Returning from their first journey James Cook and Joseph Banks reported finding the coast of a new land (they called New South Wales). The report of their brief landing at what they called “Botany Bay” in 1770 led to a decision 18 years later to send a “First Fleet” of 11 ships, laden with convicts to settle on the other side of the world. Australia was once again so very close to being French. When the First Fleet ships arrived in 1788, after 9 hard months of sailing uncharted waters, with such a difficult cargo, they arrived in the same week as Frenchman La Perouse and his two exploration ships. They stayed peacefully for a few weeks before La Perouse two ships sailed away. They were never seen again ….they simply disappeared off the face of the earth …..and despite subsequent searches by the French Government, no trace was ever found!! This year 2019 is the 220th Anniversary of the first white man to land on Bribie Island. When Matthew Flinders aboard the sloop “Norfolk”, with his aboriginal companion Bongaree were sent to explore Moreton Bay in 1799, just 11 years after the arrival of the First Fleet. Flinders and his small crew were the first white men to set foot on what is now Bribie Island, and climb a Glasshouse mountain. Flinders went on to be the first to sail right around this entire continent which was later named Australia.
Bongaree the man
The Colony of Queensland. It would be another 60 years before Queensland was separated from NSW in 1859 to become a new Colony of the British Empire. In those 60 years, there were very few who came to this desolate Island. Within a hundred years of the first sighting of this coast by Captain Cook in 1770, the Aboriginal population of Moreton Bay had been reduced to just a few. This resulted in the establishment of Queensland’s first Aboriginal reserve being set up here at Whitepatch on Bribie Island 1877.
It is therefore quite remarkable that just 17 years later some Brisbane businessmen developed Bribie Island into Australia’s first Island holiday destination. In 1912 they built the Jetty at Bongaree, started Steamship trips, and saw Bribie develop as a destination for mass tourism.
Matthew Flinders These remarkable boom years for Bribie Island were interrupted in the 1930’s by the “Great Depression”, and soon after that came World War 2. This led to great change as the Military moved in, and most residents were moved out. CONTINUES OVER PAGE >>

HISTORY CONTINUED The “Steam Ship Excursion” trade resumed again after the War but by now the Motor Car was becoming popular, and people braved the dreadful roads to bring their car by barge to the Island. In 1963 a bridge was built and the Island was joined to mainland Australia. Looking back over those 250 years the Island has experienced many remarkable events, Here is an overview of some of the key dates and events in the History of Bribie Island.

Sea gulls waiting for their chance to pounce Pipis and sea worms creating a dinner dance Local fisherman with their feet in the sand Waiting for the catch or that’s the plan
As you exhale let go of the growth The stuff that is inside of you needs to open and flow Allow the sun the sand and the salt water to combine This is natures medicine allow it to climb

Water washes over your shoulders and back Ceremonial cleansing a serpent’s track Take a deep breath and feel the wounds Pour out your anger and feel the cocoon Look up to the sky watch the seagulls dance Floating on the thermals like a midnight prance

THE WONDERLAND OF STIRLING MOSS HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY
By Helly Kemp
DAY THREE
M
onday begins like a madhouse and gets worse! The minute we hit the road Mossie takes off with - “verbal diarrhoea,” his words not mine, and holds me engrossed until – “Watch it!” I squeak, “We’re just about out of petrol.” There’s no alarming this man. We limp off the motorway and into a small village, and somehow he even makes that look like what he’s intended all along.
charm, succeeding in our passports being confiscated. After more of the same and the eventual return of our passports, we join the tail end of the queue.
we are rolling and dipping into the waves, my companion amuses himself by regaling me with explicit details of just how a craft goes to the bottom in a gale.
Mossie works himself into a frenzy, insisting they are only letting us through the gate to shut us up. Only a few cars are loading slowly, one by one. Being quite certain that we will be fine now, I grow more and more amused as his fury grows, and Mossie grows more and more frantic at my amusement.
By the time we disembark Mossie has forgotten his fury, driving from Dover to London with cheerful panache, overtaking every car in sight, as other men swat flies.
Where is the suave charmer of the last three days? Vanished! “I’ll demand an apology from you when we’re left behind,” he snarls, when the two cars in front of us do have difficulty getting on. “I told you, didn’t I,” he rages, “They won’t let us on.” So I hold my tongue, as I think he could cheerfully choke me. We do make it and take off into a Force 7 gale. At Force 8 the hovercraft stops operating. So while
We arrive at THE WONDERLAND OF STIRLING MOSS – SIMPLY COMFORT BY COMPUTER - his multi-storey London Mayfair house. He dumps his luggage in the hall, whisks into the office, and by the time I catch up, he is already sitting at his desk, dictaphone in hand with instructions for his secretary. He has to be hands on all the time. Desi, the housekeeper serves tea. Mossie lifts his without looking, his eyes fixed on the desk. Even 50 years later in the 21st century, few homes will have such a technological dream house as Mossie’s. Nearly all the
Near Ostende a garage attendant directs us to what he swears is an inexpensive restaurant. It’s a posh place – no service – and certainly not Mossie’s idea of inexpensive, so he departs in high dudgeon and I just totter, starving, after him. We arrive in Calais with just minutes to spare, only to discover we’ve come to the wrong dock. After a hectic dash around the harbour, we find the Hovercraft flight closed, with our tickets and reservations useless in our hands. Faced with an adamant French official, Mossie draws himself up to his full height (that“five foot seven and a half inches in thick socks”) and turns on a combination of aggressiveness and 40

REGULAR FEATURE gadgets, devices, and lift-shaft are invented or designed by himself. He will run his bath from the car way down the road, to the desired height and temperature, as “running a bath is a total waste of time, when a capital device can do it. It allows me an extra 5 minutes and 20 seconds in the office.” When home, he controls anything and everything from his bed in the ceiling mirrored master bedroom and some 63 circuits. Click a button and the solarium pops from above, down across the bed. Click another and the TV raises itself to the ceiling. The thermostats in the electric blanket adjust automatically to his body or room temperature at that moment. We sit down to have a meal served by Desi and part of the ceiling pops down from upstairs with the dinner table set. While waiting for the meal, I peruse Mossie’s scrapbooks. There are 65, from his first race to his last and beyond. Your head spins and you can’t help but wonder if all these distractions and mechanical toys are there to take his mind off his irretrievable loss of racing. “They replace it extremely well,” he admits. “But it’s not a straight exchange. The human mind is very adaptable. I must have a challenge in my life.” The Goodwood crash that ended Mossie’s racing career in 1962, when
Mirrored ceiling master bedroom with moving solarium, tv & total house electronic switches he was partially paralysed for six months, had doctors predicting that he would never walk again or live normally. The house with its dynamic infusion of creative energy, logical thinking and ingenious inventions proves them spectacularly wrong. After our meal, Mossie phones one of his two main steadies and laughs out loud when he puts the receiver down, “She isn’t free for Saturday,” he says, “She suggested I try ‘Deadly Rival’.” This explains a good deal of his secret – never to let any girl believe she is the only one. They accept it as though they know and understand the computer-like ticking over of that brain. After 1973 it will be another seven years before he finally marries beautiful Susie, the soul mate he’s
been searching for all his life, the woman with whom he will share everything deep into the 21st century. But by 1980 I will be back in Australia, so I never meet his “floppy disc and hard drive,” as Mossie affectionately calls Susie, as she remembers everything for him and never leaves his side. It’s heart-warming that the hands-on legend will have been happy for 40 years, as at the time we become friends, in spite of all his fame, fortune, success and achievements and all the women he can have, Mossie is a lonely man. I know I’m a bit early wishing my Mossie (Alias Stirling Moss knighted by Prince Charles in 2000 as the Queen is in Australia) a Wonderful 90th Birthday for September 2019 and may he have many more!

FISHING REPORT
W
ell, the weather has really been turned on for us over the last 2 weeks, making it great for the fishing.
Sandstone Point angler’s catch of 8 bream , 2 at 39cm, 5 over 32cm
There have been lots of fish and crabs about the passage as well as on the Surfside. The tailor is starting to show up with some being caught in the mouth of the Brisbane River, so I would expect them about the next few weeks. The Whiting are also being caught on the Surfside 1st, 2nd, 3rd and campsites you will need to pick up some preserved beach worms. Dart are also about on the surfside biting well on Pippies. A few flathead have been caught on the Surfside, best bait being mullet fillets.

By Rick Williams
We are also seeing lots of Whiting at Red Beach, Bongaree, White Patch, Avon Wrecks, Turners

Camp, Gallagher’s and Ningi Creek but if you want to catch some you will need to grab some Live Blood Worms. We are finding that the anglers have been chasing some snapper they managed on getting a good feed at Cape Moreton, The Ripples, Sandstone Point and Bellara, try some pilchards and you are sure to get a few. They are catching some big bream at Normans Gutter, Avon Wrecks, Banksia canals, Turners Camp, Gallagher’s, Poverty Creek and Red Beach with Live Blood Worms for the best bait. I tried my luck having a fish in Ningi Creek and managed to catch a good size Flathead, but they also are about at the Avon Wrecks, Turners Camp, Banksia Beach Canals, Bellara and
REGULAR FEATURE Toorbul they are liking to feed on Mullet fillets. The sand crabs have been out in full force with plenty being caught a Lime Pocket and a few along the banks of Bellara and Bongaree best bait being Mullet Heads. The mud crabs are loving the Mullet Heads at Ningi creek, Banksia Beach Canals and Toorbul. We have seen our night fisher people out on the bridge catching some good size Jew on live Squid. We must remember the best time for fishing in our beautiful Pumicestone passage and on the Surfside is the incoming tide with our full moons which mean a higher than usual tide.

BEACH
REPORT
By Michael & Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours
Welcome to another Beach Report from Michael and Rick of Gateway Discovery Tours. The inland track is soft in the usual spot halfway between White Patch and Poverty Creek. Surprises awaited us when we got into Poverty Creek, new speed bumps, they are high so please drive slowly over them, especially if you are towing a camper trailer and van as your drawbar might hit as you go over them. A
nice new walking path from the group area to the day area, a great improvement also awaits.
There are some silly drivers doing doughnuts in the sand, these people don’t deserve to access the National Park if you see them take a photo and report them, be careful as it is rough when you drive over the ruts they create.
the Lions Park picnic day area at the northern tip of the island. Recent concerns are that the ocean will break through the Island however history tells us that it is only the Caloundra Bar going back to where it once was.
The top end of Bribie is a no drive area past the northern Searchlight as the sand in places is dangerous being too soft to travel on, years ago you would have found
We may well ask how important was our Fort Bribie and the other Moreton Fortifications, an expectant Japanese invasion was clearly
Setting off along the Northern access track there has been a fire in the pine forest just after the wetlands. Please remember the vegetation is still dry and as winter arrives it will dry out further creating a real fire danger, the only place to light a fire is in a fire pit in the campgrounds. The beach is a nice drive with some good fishing spots just be careful of rips, winter fishing is great the Tailor will arrive soon.
We dmoents!

REGULAR FEATURE at the top of Fraser Island, everything was in place, the war was on our doorstep. Under General MacArthur, Australian Army and Navy amphibious personnel trained alongside American troops at Sandstone Point for an assault on Port Moresby. So yes, RAN1- Battery Hill Caloundra, RAN2-Fort Bribie and the other 7 RAN sites finishing at RAN 10 Fort Lytton were so important.
You may have seen the Channel 7 coverage this week on the heritagelisted Fort Bribie’s hidden hospital and it seems to be that the hospital may have been by stealth a POW interrogation facility more than a hospital. Come have a look at this piece of our history before it disappears forever, eroded into the sea. Gateway Discovery Tours 5497 5253.

Recent fire in the pine forest coming, so how close to being fulfilled was it? Let’s see. After Pearl Harbour had been devastated, the Japanese were to invade Townsville effectively cutting off the north and then invading south by land and sea, however, fortunately, they went to
Port Moresby instead, in order to establish their supply channels.
Decks & Patios
Japanese reconnaissance had mapped the whole Queensland coastline, knowing where their invading force could get freshwater, they had fully established a supply depot

RANTS & RAVES
Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
Congratulations to Terry Young on his election win to the seat of Longman.
Through your very informative magazine could you please inform your readers that I am a Tutor at U3A (University of the 3rd Age) and take a class that plays this entertaining card game.
My question to Terry is the same as it was to Susan Lamb in the runup to the election. When will we get an emergency medical centre for Bribie Island? Will you take up the commitment to establish an emergency medical centre, as Susan was promising if Shorten was elected, or do we have to wait another 15 years (Google “Hospital hopes for Bribie 2004” an interesting read). In the meantime, we will rely on the excellent service provided by our wonderful ambo’s to take us to Caboolture hospital should an emergency arise. As I have stated in previous letters I have lived in two towns in other states with populations of 1,100 with fully functional hospitals. Bribie has 18,000 population and increasing and no emergency medical facility or hospital. Come on Terry, take up the baton from Susan and do the right thing by the electorate who helped elect you to your position and establish an emergency medical centre on Bribie sooner rather than later. Yours Sincerely, R Cox, Bongaree 62
Whilst Cribbage has its roots back in the 16th Century it has remained a highly popular card game in England, Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand. Over the years many variations have developed including – “Pick up Winner, Pick up Loser, Nineteen, Black Hole and Deal the Crib”. All versions are played at U3A ’s Cribbage Class (Monday 8.30 – 10.30), players are so keen many attend as early as 8 am when U3A opens. If you are a Cribbage player and have not experienced the variations of the original game consider joining the class by becoming a member of U3A. Charlie, Cribbage Tutor Dear Editor, Stop Hi-Rise Developments on Bribie Island I would suggest that all that live on Bribie Island register their feelings in regard to Hi-Rise development on Bribie Island.
www.thebribieislander.com.au
The Bribie Islander
It seems that we have already seen Moreton Bay Council permit the increase in population and Residences above and beyond the 28,000 that was to be the ceiling cap. I can only think that it is for the increased dollars - rather than retain Bribie Island to be as it was meant to be - smaller populated Island. I would encourage all that live here on Bribie Island to challenge Moreton Bay over and decisions to increase dwellings and population. With Sandstone Point spreading beyond Ningi there are more than enough people in the area without causing further overcrowding. Farley Dear Editor, Despite the election being over, we are still faced with the problem of global climate change. While some people still believe that it is caused by movements of the earth within the galaxy or volcanoes which actually reduce temperatures, and others blame human activity, perhaps there is a more “natural” cause. Those who know of the Gaia hypothesis have realised that the biosphere is a self-regulating system. Any change produces a
SAY secondary change which negatively feeds back to correct the first change. When humans dig up fossil fuels and burn them, the atmospheric CO2 level rises. This causes the system to respond by producing more bush-fires, cyclones and flood. Like any negative feedback loop, the result is to reduce the cause: the human population which dug up the fuel. Similarly, the extinction of many other species by the destruction of their habitat will result in the collapse of ecosystems, and explosions of populations no longer controlled by other species. Some of the former will no doubt be species which reduce the human population, such as mosquitoes and viruses. Unless humans change their ways, the natural result will be their own destruction. Hazel Beneke, Banksia Beach Dear Editor, Thank you so much for the great magazine coverage that you gave The Pre-Loved Fashion Parade. It was amazing!! Many thanks, Kay Benson Dear Editor, ‘The solution to the “Pelican Problem” is simple: Main Roads affix a ‘Pelican Platform’ at the top of each light pole opposite the light. C’mon Minister for Main Roads, you can do it.” Pelican Pleader (Tim Dufton)
