OUR ISLAND HEALTH I
n this issue of The Bribie Islander magazine, we talk to the entrepreneurial doctors behind Bribie’s proposed medical centre, Raahul and Arti Vaid. Read about their vision for Bribie’s primary health care and the centre that promises to deliver future cutting edge services for the local population. While thinking about health it is a timely reminder to appreciate in a broader sense just how much our local GP’s do for us in the community. According to The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners’ (RACGP’s) President-elect, Dr Harry Nespolon in his message published in The General Practice: Health of the Nation 2018 report, he highlights that the report’s findings again reveal fascinating, alarming and insightful information about general practice in Australia. He says the report paints a picture of general practice in 2018, highlighting the positive areas in the profession while noting key areas of much-needed
attention by their policymakers and regulatory bodies to ensure their patients are not missing the opportunity to access high-quality healthcare. In the report, Dr Nespolon says that GPs remain responsible for the frontline of healthcare. He said it is widely accepted that a GP is the person Australian patients trust most when it comes to their health and the health of their family. Despite general practice being the most accessed area of Australia’s health system, with more than two million appointments made every week, funding for patients to visit their GP makes up less than 9% of Australia’s annual health budget. Many of the emerging health conditions facing Australia are managed by GPs in their early stages. In the report, he warns that if general practice does not receive the urgent support it needs from our government, these emerging concerns could become even more serious.

new proposed multi-level Minor Accident/ Emergency Centre & Hospital for Bribie Island and nearby areas. think and work on a plan of action for the last three years. After the birth of their first child Ishaan, the plan was put on the back burner but now there is great progress happening. Proposed is a five-storey building featuring ground floor minor accident and emergency services to start, with 6 active beds plus 4 more monitoring beds. The number of beds can be increased or decreased to suit demand along with radiology and pathology to support these services. A dental centre and a few shops for medical related items only, a small convenience store for residents and visitors, along with a cafĂŠ to make this a one-stop

The first floor will be initially a day hospital and progress to an overnight stay, facilities for specialists visiting rooms, Allied Health care centre, Rehabilitation centre and they are looking at services that are not available on Bribie or Caboolture, a dedicated conference room for training and general use. Levels 2 and 3 will comprise of 78 rooms for residential aged care, people that need advanced care unable to live independently, 34 of these rooms for couples to live together, not being

Dedicated on-site Doctor is being planned to be available during working hours to care for the residents & emergency downstairs would be available to them overnight, eventually. Level 4 is proposed as a child care centre to help and facilitate the aged care in their later stages of life giving them something to look forward to. Monitored interaction with the kids has been proven to reduce depression and dementia, it gives them a purpose in life when they wake up in the morning they know they are going to have something positive and interactive to do as the family cannot usually be around them all the time, thus reducing pressure off family members too. Depending on resources the ground floor emergency is proposed to open 24 hours a day gradually over time. The residents have been positively commenting to the Vaids that this facility is long overdue, an accident on the bridge makes access almost impossible in an emergency. Once approval is granted there is a need for funding. Government services, local MP’s and other various grants and sources will be approached to make it viable and cost-effective for everyone
Raahul and Arti came to Bribie in 2008 and fell in love with the place. Both doctors were born, brought up and received medical training in India, after serving as medical officers in the Army they migrated to Australia. Raahul said “We came to Bribie and fell in love with it! We finally found our home and have ever since been living and practising here. We really appreciate the love and affection we have received from everyone here”.

How it all began Three mates wanted to get off the grog for a month so Brett, Kenny and Phil decided to do this in the month of July back in 2008 coining it ‘Dry July’. They also thought of raising money for a worthy cause at the same time, so they asked their family and mates to sponsor them.
“Since 2008, Dry July has inspired more than 160,000 Aussies to go dry, raising $37 million for people affected by cancer, and funding projects at more than 75 cancer organisations across Australia”.
A few of her family members are on side with the challenge, one being her brother Brad Tully who is right behind her and the cause donating a whopping $250! Kylie has set her goal to raise $500 so if you would like to donate to this great foundation and help Kylie to reach her goal then go to www.dryjuly.com/users/ kylie-jenkins

I met with Kylie Jenkins, a Bribie local from Bongaree who has decided to participate in ‘Dry July’ where each day of the month in July you eliminate alcohol from your diet. Some do this as a month of detoxing the body, to realise you are not an alcoholic or one of many reasons including raising money for the victims of cancer and one of Kylie’s family members very sadly passed away at a young age from cancer.

has been, feeling a little nervous at the start her workmates said they were going to buy her a ‘golden ticket’ (purchased on the Dry July site giving the participant a 1 day pass to have a drink) each week so she could have a beer! But as Kylie said, “That’s kind of cheating!” She has had a couple alcohol-free beers, enjoying the taste without the foggy feeling the day after.

A READER’S STORY
SERPENTINE STORIES
Caption: 1 Col
By Elaine Lutton
I
t would seem that St Patrick never visited Bribie Island, or if he did, he had forgotten his Irish miracles. Now that the cooler weather has arrived and the snakes are snoozing, I feel I can recount a few snake stories without tempting fate. The first of my tales are not about a snake at all, but a magnificent lace monitor which was quietly minding her own business in the sun, half-way up a tree in our yard. The recently arrived European grandmother from next door was attending to her flowerbeds when she looked up and saw this large reptile just above her head. Elderly though she was, she took to her heels crying “‘Viper, viper!” It took some time before she could be persuaded to come out again, and appreciate the beauty of this large lizard. Loss of habitat and increased development in our area, has not removed our more venomous “pets”. The eastern brown snake is a common visitor, and in the summer months, we keep the yard mowed and
watch where we put our feet. Even so, we have had our fair share of excitement. Entertaining friends at a B.B.Q. we took shelter in the shed from a shower. An uninvited guest also decided to escape the rain and join the throng, and so we had the privilege of seeing twenty, or more, folk simultaneously levitate, with many a panicked squeal. Of course, there is always the sceptic that will claim your venomous Roughscaled snake is nothing more exciting than a harmless Keelback. Identification can be tricky. Most snakes are a little shy when asked to roll over so you can count their ventral scales. Certainly, my husband Don did not wait upon such niceties before diving to snatch the bouncinette, complete with infant grandson, and placing both on a high outdoor table, as Joe Blake slid by. The tree-snakes in our yard can vie with the lorikeets as regards to their beautiful colouring. The slender olive-green tree snake

with its stunning yellow throat and belly set off with turquoise flecks that curled up on the chairs set out for our English visitors caused quite a stir. Romance is alive in Paradise. My neighbour and I were entranced at the sight of two snakes twisted around each other in a tight embrace apparently, amongst other things, dining together on an unfortunate frog. We left them to their honeymoon. Finally, a tall but true tale. A few houses down from us, in an old-style fibro cottage, lived professional fishermen and their two dogs, one a poodle, and the other a large Alsatian. Around 11 pm we heard the dogs yelping and barking and the sound of shouting. A large carpet snake, a python, had the poodle in its coils and was squeezing the life out of the poor dog. The big brave Alsatian was reduced to jelly, knees knocking. The owners rushed out and tried to unwind the snake and save the poodle, but without success. The python was not about to give up its supper without a fight,
and, whilst not venomous, nobody was keen to risk a bite from the angry reptile. Lateral thinking saved the day. The vacuum cleaner was brought out, the hose pushed over the snake’s head and the power switched on thereby immobilising the toothed end. Beginning at the tail end, the snake was forcefully unwound. This was no mean task. Eventually, our poodle friend was free, albeit with bruised ribs, and later made a full recovery. We trust the python also recovered from his ordeal. We never attempt to kill our serpentine friends. Not only would that be illegal since Bribie is a Fauna and Flora Reserve, but it can be dangerous; being threatened with a large spade would no doubt bring out the aggression in you too. We give them the respect that we feel that they deserve as another fascinating part of our wildlife, and allow them to go on their way unmolested, whilst teaching our grandchildren to look, but never touch.

ROTARY
PASSING ON THE BATON! By Anne Matthews, PR Director Bribie Rotary
T
aking inspiration from an event many of us would have experienced the relay race - I am using the analogy of ‘passing the baton’ to describe what happens in the 35,000 Rotary Clubs around the world each June/July. Every Club holds a Changeover Dinner or ceremony, which
brings new leadership, new ideas, a new theme - ‘Rotary Connects the World’ - and renewed energy to every Club.
This changeover of leadership occurs throughout Rotary - on all 3 levels - at International, District and Club. There is just so much talking, eating, drinking and organising. My friend and fellow Rotarian, Barry Clark, once observed
‘imagine the number of chickens needed for all these changeover dinners 35,000 Clubs and 1.2 million Rotarians! With a quarter of a chicken each, that means 300,000 chickens will be needed by Rotarians this June/July”. I hear the chicken community cry ‘foul’! On Thursday 4 July 2019, the Rotary Club of Bribie Island joined the ‘passing the baton’ tradition and held its annual Changeover dinner at Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club (PHGCC). This beautiful location has become the home of our larger functions and events. Well worth a thought if you are planning a special occasion. New President for 20192020, Jeff Eustace, who takes over from John Oxenford, introduced his incoming Board of Directors. Mary Grant will continue as Secretary, Roger Platt as Treasurer and June Sturges, Greg Whymark and Anne Matthews will continue as Youth, Membership, and PR Directors. Re-joining the Board for the new Rotary year will be Gillian Parry as our Community Service Director and Bernie Wilson as our Vocations Director. Immediate past President John Oxenford will fill the role of International and Foundation Director.

COMMUNITY EVENT
STEP BACK IN TIME
By Richard Whetlor
If you ever wondered what it would be like to live hundreds of years ago then take a step back in time and see what the Lords, Ladies, Knight’s and peasants got up to at The Medieval Festival which takes place once a year in July and has been a popular event for the past 30 years. The festival is run by the Abbey Museum’s small team of coordinators and also lots of volunteers to make it happen.
Thousands attend to see the villagers re-enact the past from the Middle East and Europe mainly between 600 to 1600AD. As you wander around there is lots to see and do, watch and hear the history come to life with music, performers, arts and crafts, display combat, jousting, pottery, woodworking, weaving and skills from 1000 years of history.
Here is a year of festive frolicking! Medieval festivals celebrated in January on the twelfth day after the visit of the wise men and the birth of Jesus. The medieval festival in February celebrated the month of love and St. Valentine’s Day, dancing and pairing games so

the month of love. Medieval festivals celebrated in March portraying the crucifixion (Good Friday) and the resurrection (Easter Monday). Festivals celebrated in April would of course be the Jesters of misrule creating havoc on April Fool’s Day also known as All Fool’s Day! Festivals in May were May Day when villagers danced around the May Pole and the Queen of May was chosen. Festivals celebrated in June were reliving legends such as
Darrell Bossley astride S’Caliber a Flat Friesian war horse
George and the Dragon with fires where bones were burned hence the term bonfire. Festivals celebrated in July as legend suggests that when the bones of St. Swithin were moved after the ceremony it rained for forty days and forty nights. Festivals celebrated in August would be Lammas or first harvest of wheat for the year, often referred to as loaf mass day. September celebrated the life of St. Michael with traditional food of goose or chicken on Michaelmas. October celebrated King Crispin where people would act like King Crispin and revel and bonfires. November would
be a month to celebrate the day of the dead with Halloween, All Hallows Day or All Souls Day and frolic and light bonfires. December medieval festivals were all about Christmas. WINELANDER B aby, it’s cold outside, let’s light the fire grab the port and put on our favourite music, ah everything is now nice, cosy and warm, life is good. As the evening temperatures drop it is time to put the Sauvignon Blanc on hold, find a familiar red and after dinner a sip of port or sherry, the perfect end to the evening. The wine industry in Australia was started primarily to satisfy the thirst of the fortified wine drinkers of yesterday in Australia but mainly the United Kingdom and until the mid-nineteen-eighties this was still the order of the day in Australia then a couple of things changed the way we drank our wines and the style of wines we drank and which unfortunately saw the decline of some classic Australian made fortified wines. Firstly was the discovery of our table wines in the United Kingdom especially Jacobs Creek and this saw a revolution in the planting of grapes specifically for table 20
wine production, secondly and probably a move which caused the biggest drop in the sales of fortified wines was the change in labelling of the products due to European rules and regulations, Sherry became Apera and Port simply became Tawny or Vintage which I believe caused a lot of confusion amongst the public, so firstly let’s have a look at exactly what a fortified wine is and then what’s available out there and why we should still enjoy a fortified wine before we retire for the evening. Fortified wine is as the name suggests a wine that has been strengthened by the addition of a spirit usually brandy or distilled grape spirit. Port is made using red wine grapes and is a British phenomenon, not Portuguese. During the wars with France Britain from whom had traditionally imported their wine needs had to find an alternative supplier and turned to Portugal but the problems were the wines often didn’t survive the long sea journey and a

solution had to be found. It was found that by adding brandy spirit to the wine it maintained the quality of the wine and the wine also picked up the flavour of the oak barrels which the English grew to appreciate and enjoy.
The British perfected port production over time and many of the wineries that produce port are owned by British companies such as Taylors, Croft and Graham. Port comes from The Douro Valley in Portugal which has now become a significant tourist destination especially cruising up the river stopping at the various towns and enjoying port tastings. Port also comes in two styles Tawny and Vintage, Tawny is made from barrels of aged material and blended from different ages, the barrels are stacked up on top of each other with the oldest stock being at the bottom and the youngest at the top in what is known as a ‘Solera System’. Once the port is bottled there is no development of the wine and depending on
By Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au the blend will affect the price you pay for the wine as some material can be very old, in fact, one of the most expensive Australian wines for sale are available from a wine house in Dubai and is a rare Seppeltsfield Para Vintage port with an 1879 vintage selling for over $8000. Vintage Port, on the other hand, spends only a year or so in the barrel then is bottled and develops like aged red wine and once opened should be decanted and drank reasonably quickly as they tend to oxidise straight away. Another Portuguese fortified wine is from the island of Madeira and is often used in cooking and cocktails. Madeira is available in a range of dry to sweet and its unique taste comes from repeatedly heating the wine which creates a wine with the flavour of roasted nuts, stewed fruit caramel and toffee. The dryer styles are chilled and served with starter courses whilst the sweeter styles are often served as an

Any Muscat from Rutherglen is a treat especially wines from Buller and Morris and pop into Dan Murphy’s as they have a huge range of fortified wines from Australia and Europe which will make your winter evenings a little more bearable.
Sherry comes in several styles ranging from bone dry to syrupy-sweet. The light and dry styles are aged in barrels under a layer of living yeast and are found under the names of Fino, Manzanilla and Amontillado. The sweeter styles are heavier in alcohol and go by the names Oloroso, Palo Cortado, and Jerez Dulce and are made with Pedro Ximenez and Moscatel grapes. Whichever style the winemakers choose they too use the Solera system of stacking the barrels and by mixing various vintages can produce very complex styles of wine.
This week I found Giessen Sauvignon Blanc in BWS at $11 and Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc at Liquorland for $10 which I think is one of the best buys around. Also from BWS a Colonel and Merchant Barossa Shiraz which is one of Woolworth’s own labels and worth a try and I also ordered a few bottles of Irvine Barossa Shiraz at half price from Dan Murphy’s online and I certainly wasn’t disappointed with the outcome, Irvine is one of the best wineries in the area.
Fino or Manzanilla Sherry can be served as an aperitif chilled or are delightful with a chilled soup such as Gazpacho or fish and seafood. They are also well suited to anything deepfried, mussels and chorizo sausage, Spanish ham and all kinds of Tapas. Seppeltsfield make a D.P. Fino which would be very interesting, unfortunately, my favourite Fino was made by Angove’s who stopped making it some twenty years ago. The sweeter and medium styles pair well with Tiramisu, dark chocolate, vanilla ice cream and also blue cheese and pate.
Cheers, Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au

ren’t these Winter mornings just glorious! A couple of my local buddies and I have been rising early in the cold to catch our Woorim sunrise and start our day with exercise. I think it the best way to start the day other than morning prayer. Feeling that first ray of sunlight dance on your shoulders and resonate with the light inside you is invigorating. Rather, I see myself investing in the things and people that matter; that is the real reason we go to work right? To support our living, not living to support our work. Balance. For example, yesterday I took mother out for a drive to Dayboro. I’ve only heard and not seen this part of our land and so it was time to get adventuring. What a quaint little town indeed! The first stop we made was to Dayboro’s famous bakery that apparently sold,

Then, we meandered through the little old town talking to the locals and reading up on its history. Such delightful people! With Mum being quite the talker and me being a curious cat we found lots of funny nooks and crannies. The information centre was
run by a gentleman with lovely, shining blue eyes who we found has ridden all around Australia on a pushbike! And I thought I liked bike riding… I also spent some time sitting under a sunlit window reading about St Francis Xavier Church, their local gathering. The church is now 191 years old since its opening in 1989, wow hey? Definitely had some
humorous reads in its section on pastors who served there. For example, John Manthey, who was known for his love of football and conclusion of prayers which involved asking for protection over our Broncos team. As well as having the ‘State of Origin games on the parish Calendar’. Very relevant for the season we are in! Go read it for yourself sometime. I had quite a chuckle. Then we talked to a sweet lady who was running the craft shop there for the day. Turns out the craft shop is the oldest original house in town. It has a set-up of how the kitchen originally would have been. About 30 crafty locals keep ‘Hay Cottage’ up and running with their own work on display. After walking up and down the street for a while Mum was beginning to decide
her choice of apparel for the day was not suitable so we scooted on down to ‘Shaneta’ fashion boutique. It wasn’t long before we found a gorgeous piece for her, I found some jewellery and away we went. But not before having a decent chinwag with Neta, the store owner, who has just made residence on our little ol’ Island! We welcome you Neta. Arriving and exploring through Dayboro was nice, but I also loved simply driving through the gumtreed roads and seeing all the farming properties with their horses and cows too. Aah, what a country we live in and what community we have all around us with interesting stories to partake in. Islanders, keep that childlike heart alive that wants to connect and cultivate always.

AUSTRALIAN BOOBOOK OWL
– NINOX NOVAESEELANDIAE By Marj Webber
A
ustralian Boobook Owls are the smallest and most common of the Australian Owls and are reasonably common breeding residents on Bribie Island. They are 30-35 cm in length and weigh 120-350 g. They belong to the Hawk Owl family as their faces are quite hawk-like. Their most prominent feature is their huge yellowish eyes which are surrounded by dark circles. To look in different directions they need to turn their heads as their eyes are fixed in their sockets. Heads are large and tails are short. Plumage is dark brown and mottled with slight variations on birds living in different habitats. Young birds are usually lighter in colour. They are nocturnal birds and their calls “Boobook Boobook” during the night from sunset to sunrise may be heard up to a kilometre away. Quite often the calls are from a pair of owls calling to each other. Females are a little larger than males. They are thought to live for about 15 years. Occurring singularly, in pairs or in family groups Boobooks may be sighted anywhere in mainland Australia and Tasmania

from open woodlands, suburban parks and gardens to the desert. In fact, they may be found anywhere there are suitable trees. A closely related species is found in NZ, PNG and Indonesia. During the day they roost in thick foliage usually high up in trees blending in well with the surroundings and therefore very hard to spot. Sometimes the agitated sounds of other birds attacking them are the only indication of their presence. When alarmed they stretch upward and turn side on and try to blend in with their surroundings. Some of their food such as insects and small bats is caught on the wing while other prey such as small mammals and reptiles is pounced upon on the ground. They rely on their sight and hearing for detecting the prey. From a perch on a fence, pole or tree they wait, watching and listening for movement and swiftly pounce when their quarry appears. Their food is swallowed whole and bones etc are later disgorged. The breeding season is quite long from September

to February but most of their breeding is done during October if the conditions are right. Hollows in large old trees, stumps and sometimes in cliff faces are used as nesting sites. Males line the nests with chewed woodchips and leaves. Clutches of 2-3 white eggs are laid and incubated by females for about 34-42 days. Males bring food to the females while on the nest and help with the feeding when the babies hatch. Chicks are blind and helpless and covered in white down when hatched. After about 6 days the eyes open. Males bring food to the females that tear it apart to feed to the chicks. By this time the nests are becoming quite smelly with the droppings and unwanted food. The young fledge after about 5 weeks and remain under their parents care for several more months before dispersing. Sites are usually reused time and time again. If hollows are becoming scarce Boobooks sometimes evict other birds occupying a hollow. Sometimes one or two birds will occupy a hollow for many months before they begin to breed. Australian Boobook Owl Note Hawk like face
Recently during 2019 Boobooks had a name change from Southern Boobook to Australian Boobook. Other names for Boobooks are “Morepork” and “Mopoke”. These common names were derived from their call. They were first recorded by John Latham in 1801. In 1968 David Fleay from the Gold Coast observed that the Tasmanian Boobooks resembled the NZ species more closely. Australian Boobooks could be confused with Barking Owls which are larger and a grey colour instead of brown. Feral Cats, Raptors and Possums are a danger to the eggs and young birds. Rat poison and loss of habitat are other threats. They In Hollow at are often Sylvan Beach harassed by other birds that see them as a danger to their eggs and young. As they need very large hollows for nesting, they require old, large trees which can be hundreds of years old. Big old dead trees are just as important. Boobooks are common residents throughout mainland Australia and Tasmania. There has been no evidence of serious decline and their conservation status for now is secure.

WALK WITH ME THRO’ OLD BRIBIE
write this regular History Page to introduce readers to a few fascinating facts about this place where we live.
For those who are recent arrivals, and those who have lived here for some time, I know they are often surprised and entertained by things they learn. I conduct regular free heritage walks on Bribie as part of the Councils “Healthy & Active” program and there are several coming up in the months of August and October. The Poster on this page gives dates and details. The guided walks are free but you are required to register on the web site (moretonbay.qld.gov.au/healthy-active) to come along as numbers are limited.

STEPPING THROUGH HISTORY
T
hese are slow and easy guided walks to introduce you to fascinating facts, events and buildings that formed part of the unique lifestyle that Bribie had years ago. People are always surprised to learn the history and heritage of building and places that have driven past a thousand times but had no idea what they originally were, or the role they played in shaping the unique character of Bribie Island. How long has Bribie been an island is a question I am often asked. I can’t give you an exact date but we do know that just a few thousand years ago the whole of Moreton Bay was dry land, and the shoreline was on the other side of Moreton Island. The sea level has risen over the last 6000 years and was certainly once much higher than it is now, as we can see from distinctive land formations. It may not have been an island when the first

European explorers came here when the indigenous people had numerous camping and ritual sites throughout the area. It was certainly plentiful for fish and seafood, plants and berries and extensive wildlife.
Camping on Bribie 1922 When Bribie was opened up to Steamship excursions from Brisbane from 1912 people came in their thousands to camp and fish here. Most of the Bongaree foreshore was covered with thousands of white canvas tents prior to construction of a few cottages and guest houses in the 1920s. Early visitors referred to Bribie as “A Zoo without a Fence” because there was so much natural wildlife here. With settlement

came domestic animals such as cattle and horses and these roamed wild around the island for many years. Collecting cow dung in the early morning was a regular task for people to burn on open fires to reduce the mosquito problem. And it was a very big problem back then!! BRIBIE HAD CHARACTERS As the population slowly grew to a few hundred permanent residents it became known as “The three D’s” because it had a reputation for Drunks, Dogs and De Facto relationships!! Yes, there were certainly some unusual charters who made their way to Bribie in the early days. After the first World War, there were many veterans with less than the full complement of arms or legs. One such was Jimmy “No-Legs” Hagan whose original cottage still stands beside Shirley Creek today. To serve the growing number of campers and residents a few small shops and services started up around Bongaree, and evidence of this is still visible if you know where to look.
Electricity eventually came to Bribie in the 1950s but prior to that, a private electricity generator was installed in Banya Street to service a few grand homes that had been built. A School, Churches and Community dance hall and Cinema were built, and the core of a self-sufficient community soon developed. When the first car was brought to Bribie there were no roads here, or indeed any roads anywhere near Bribie. It took two days to drive this car from Brisbane over bush tracks and beaches, and it was finally floated over to Bribie from the mainland.
ROADS BUILT ON BRIBIE It was several years later that the first dirt road was constructed from Bongaree to Woorim, which was the start of a Surf Club and construction of the first houses at Woorim. In the 1930’s Woorim was the closest surf beach to Brisbane, long before there were roads or developments at what is now the Gold Coast. Perhaps the grandest road on Bribie is Banya Street which was developed with the amazing vision of a dual carriageway, even when there were no cars or vehicles other than horse-drawn carts on the island. Some of the original buildings still remain to

be seen in Banya street, but several of the large Guest Houses at the core of Bribie tourism in the 1920s and 30s have gone. The Bribie Jetty was the focal point of island life and everyone came down to see the many steamships come and go laden with people looking for the unique day trip or holiday experience. Various families ran a guest house, dining room and shop beside the Jetty for over 30 years. Oysters and Fish dinners were always available for the visitors and there was much competition to entice customers to the various offerings. An Oyster stall on the Jetty offered large Oysters at 6 pence a dozen. Those were the days!!
Pier Kiosk & Guest House Advert 1936 During World War 2 most residents were evacuated and many homes were occupied by the military. After the War when building materials were scarce several old buildings were brought to Bribie and re-erected for various purposes. Savige’s Fish shop was once a military Hospital in Brisbane before it was brought to Bribie. CONTINUES OVER PAGE >>

HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY
“I’D SOONER BE A DWARF THAN A GIANT!” R2D2 - ALIAS KENNY BAKER He hops off the crate, has a little lunch and elaborates:
“If you’re small, you can get lost in a crowd. But when you’re very tall, you stand out like a sore thumb. You get a lot of backaches, have trouble getting through doorways, in telephone booths and airplane seats, which must be harder to live with than our problem.” By Helly Kemp
The benefits he lists are mostly illusory, the
“I
’d sooner be a dwarf than a giant!” declares 44-year-old Kenny Baker bravely with vehemence and philosophical conviction that belies his 112 cm (3’8”) frame as the smallest man in England. But what an icon he is! One of the two most famous robots the world has ever known, R2D2, alias ARTOODETOO, stands proudly on a banana crate in my London home, his little legs as far apart as possible for stability, as we enjoy his favourite game: table tennis. It’s shortly after the first 1977 release of STAR WARS and Kenny loves popping over for a game, being a neighbour in nearby Bushey, Middlesex. 34
www.thebribieislander.com.au
Well matched in size perky defiance of a man determined not to let a cruel trick of nature get him down. But his lifetime’s experience of being tiny is shared with his 30-year-old wife, Eileen, only 10 cm taller than himself. Kenny’s parents, were normal height, his mother, a pianist and dressmaker, his father, an artist, musician and draughtsman. And how did Kenny react when sons Christopher, 7, and Kevin, 4, were born? “We were absolutely amazed that the boys were normal. Eileen too had parents who were normal and we don’t know why we are dwarfs any more than we know why our boys aren’t. But, of course, we are delighted with it.” But it’s when Kenny walks onto a film set, heavily disguised as a fancy tin can, that the elaborate
process begins which turns him into one half of the android double act with C-3PO, that makes the incredible STAR WARS into more than just another science fiction movie. Yet Kenny’s stardom must be the most anonymous of all time. How many of the fans to whom Artoo Detoo is a personality in his own right, realize that underneath the metal tub is a real man - still pinching himself in case he wakes up and discovers it isn’t true after all? “I’ve had over 2,000 letters from kids all over the world,” he says wonderingly. “They just write to Artoo Detoo, 20th Century Fox, England. And the letters get to me. But there are too many now for me to answer, so the Star Wars Department is taking them over.” Already Kenny’s life has changed considerably. “With the first Star Wars money I bought myself a Japanese car, a three-piece suite and a fridge-freezer. We could use the rest to buy a bigger house, but instead, it will be a nest egg for our sons’ private schools, as the classes are smaller and the boys will get more attention and so a better education.”
Formal Occasion The Bribie Islander
In a hurry
Kenny does not let his lack of size dominate his life. Where it causes problems, he finds a way
around them, like driving his car. He has the air of a showman, sporting two gold rings, initialled K.B. and his face is seldom without a beaming smile. “I can drive the car easily. It’s my legs that are short. So, I get over that by having the pedals extended upwards by 9” and I put a cushion behind my back to keep the seat more upright, which brings me closer to the steering wheel. I’ve discovered the more expensive a car is, the easier it is to handle with everything automatic and within easy reach.” As the years go on Kenny will be seen in many other than the Star Wars movies including THE ELEPHANT MAN, AMADEUS, WILLOW, FLASH GORDON, JIM HENSON’S MUPPET SHOW, LABYRINTH and BBC’S THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA, to include just a few. “I’m on a percentage for the next franchise, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, one-eighth of one percent, plus my basic salary. It won’t make me a millionaire, but I think it will be a wise choice in the end.” And even as a robot there are problems other actors never dream of. “I stand inside the robot with my elbows pinned and my hands on the gramp handles. Originally, I was supposed to slide one
REGULAR FEATURE With Alec Guinness foot forward and then the other. But as the robot is twice as heavy as me, I’m only 75lbs, the other one goes automatically backwards and I nearly did the splits. I then rock the robot from side to side, but still can’t move fast. So now they developed a remote control, dropping down a third leg with steering and a motor drive. And it gets terribly hot inside. In the scene where they are burning the Jawas and I’m standing right next to the funeral pyre, it was so hot I could hardly breathe nor touch anything inside.” And as the Star Wars films continue, Kenny as R2D2 will be in every one of them until in 2015, when he stops acting because of his chronic lung problems. Instead, he becomes the consultant in THE FORCE AWAKENS, to teach the new R2D2, how to play the role Kenny has been a master of for nearly 40 years. Sadly, in 2016 we will lose Kenny just 11 days before his 82nd
WITH C-3PO birthday. But Artoo Detoo has captured our hearts and will be there for generations to come, remaining children’s and many grownups’ favourite robot.

EXCITEMENT BUILDING AT THE GALLERY By Debra Mieth

Meet the 2019 MFAP Judges
M
eet the 2019 Matthew Flinders Art Prize Judges at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre this morning Friday 19 July. Hear Lyne Marshall and Michael Brennan in their Question & Answer session at 10 am – 11 am in the boardroom. Fresh from yesterday’s judging and choosing who’s up for the prizes, Lyne and Michael will be talking about entering and judging art competitions.
Lyne Marshall Prize winners will be announced by the judges tonight at the MFAP 2019 Opening Event. All entrants will be waiting with bated breath. After you’ve met the judges and plied them with your queries, do enjoy a cuppa at our new Cafe 191 on the deck. It is always interesting to see what art/photography/ sculpture each year’s MFAP judges deem the choicest. Let’s have a look at their credentials for the task. Lyne Marshall is a painter, printmaker, sculptor and
author. At 46 she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts. She has had over 40 solo exhibitions, written and illustrated four books on the creative process and travels extensively in order to translate her encounters into artworks. Michael Brennan, Noosa Regional Gallery director since 2018, has held roles as Artistic Director and Senior Curator at La Trobe University Museum of Art, Programming Manager at Footscray Community Art Centre and has co-founded artist-run initiatives Trocadero Art Space and Shifted. Michael holds a Master of Fine Art and Master of Art Curatorship. Originally trained as a painter, he has exhibited nationally and been a finalist in major art prizes such as the Brett Whitely Travelling Art Scholarship. In addition to their Friday Q&A session, Michael and Lyne will conduct a floor talk on the MFAP in the Matthew Flinders Gallery on Saturday 20 July at 10 am to which all are welcome. The MFAP exhibition will run until August 9.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH
A MOUNTAIN AND HIS CAMERA Art Prize. Now permanently hanging in the Australian War Memorial, the photo, aptly titled Transition, is a self-portrait taking a critical view of four stages from defence to civilian life. For after serving in both the German and Australian Armies as a paratrooper, deployed in the Solomon Islands, East Timor and Afghanistan, Craig hung up his uniform as a result of injury. Thereafter followed for him a period of uncertainty with a loss of identity and purpose.

ur favourite 6ft 5in ‘mountain’ is back with us as Artist of the Month for August, right on time for the Matthew Flinders Art Prize in the gallery. And that, as many readers will know, is significant because Craig Rohse took out first in the art prize last year. His winning portrait of trio Three Wise Veterans has subsequently been sold, reprinted and sold several times since then. Craig tells me he is doing something different for this exhibition, away from

military life. So the mind boggles wondering what the wall at Bribie Island Community Arts Centre will reveal. Whatever he produces, it is sure to reflect Craig’s award and grant winning status as a becoming well-known, emerging photographer - his latest achievement in May being exactly that: recognition as one of the Top 20 of Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographers 2019 in the Portrait category. Among those awards was a Highly Commended for his entry in 2018 Napier Waller
However Craig Rohse admirably rediscovered himself when he completed a Diploma of Visual Arts in photography at TAFE Tasmania in 2016. From then he has gone from strength to strength, opening his Little Gallery and with his wife, Vanessa, the Zesty Lemon Cafe, both in Deception Bay. And most of us know about Craig’s successful and ongoing efforts to bring Defence Force Veteran artists together to exhibit at the gallery in April this year and into the future. To quote Mervyn Napier Waller, the young man for whom the first national military art prize is named and who lost his arm fighting at Bullecourt, France in WWI, then took up drawing with his left hand during convalescence: “An artist draws with his head, not his hands.” Craig Rohse is one of his ilk: an
Craig in uniform artist who makes pictures with his head – seen through a lens and captured by a camera! Craig’s Artist of the Month talk followed by morning tea will be held on Friday 9 August at the Arts Centre, just one day before our art prize finishes. Bookings for catering purposes can be made by ringing 3408 9288.

MOVIE REVIEW THE PELICAN BRIEF
By Chris Connolly
“T
he Pelican Brief” is a 1993 gem currently showing on Netflix. If you are looking for one of those enduring films that is as relevant today as it was when released, consider viewing this one again. The film, based on John Grisham’s novel, tells the story of Darby Shaw, played by Julia Roberts, as a budding law student. Shaw takes it upon herself to explore the underlying causes for the assassinations of two sitting US Supreme Court Judges -despite an active FBI investigation. When her findings, The Pelican Brief, suggest “good old-fashioned greed” as the root cause and are circulated within government, her life is in serious danger. In response, Shaw engages the renowned investigative journalist, Gray Grantham played by Denzel Washington, to seek support and prove her assumptions.
• Caravans, campers, trailers and motor home repairs • Extensive variety of spare parts in stock • Awning supply, installation and repairs • Waeco and dometic fridges • Insurance and warranty repairs • Authorised Jayco agent • Alko ESC authorised installer www.facebook.com/ allterrainrvrepairs/ 44
As the story unfolds, they uncover rampant corruption, governmental cover-ups, conspiracies and clear obstruction of justice at the highest levels of government. The film is riveting. It leaves the viewer with a deep respect for citizens who dare to question and for journalists who seek the truth in spite of the risks involved. It also engenders hope for a future where, in the end, the rule of law prevails. Roberts and Washington are at their best in this film. Even if you saw this film years ago, seeing it again won’t disappoint.

MAD POETS My Little House at Bongaree
I bought a house on Bribie, When my husband died in 95. It wasn’t flash, a granny flat, Was out the back and side. I bought my mother with me hence the granny flat, She stayed 12 years and lived with me, And she passed, and a new day began. Next, my niece stayed with her two young boys, My son was there awhile. Then my daughter and her kids, And her two dogs so wild! After daughter came and went, With dogs and kids and chattels. Then the renters moved right in, Oh! How my faith was shattered! Then daughter married, moved away, And both the kids had school at Bribie. They and dogs came back to stay, And we were all a family! And now they’re moving on again, One to go overseas.
The other will travel Australia wide, That leaves the dogs and me. Now, the dogs will live in Tasmania, And I will be left alone. I think the time is coming, When I must leave this home. Is it nature or nurture? While this debate continues to divide academics, let me assure you that astrological signs have no influence on IQ. No one sign is cleverer than the others. There are times, though, when our minds work more sharply, our ideas seem brighter and our plans seem to make a great deal of sense. You’ll know this feeling in August. You have the company of the guardian angel of ingenuity watching over you. Ask for help if you need it. August starts with a New Moon. Make your dreams come true. Call 1900 959 005. LIBRA (September 24 October 23) The start of the month is a good moment to ponder that riddle about the chicken and the egg. Which do you think came first? Whilst you have a think I’ll sing a little tune… Tra la la la la… dooby be doo… have you worked out the right answer yet? Here’s another question: how much of your life is down to choice and how much of it is predestined? More music? Shoo be doo wop… doo wop… August isn’t going to bring you answers to this kind of question, but you’ll find it easy to sort out almost any other issues. A new month! A powerful New Moon! For good news call 1900 959 005. SCORPIO (October 24 November 22) The way you relate to the material world can be a source of exasperation.
Recently, you’ve found that, although you often come close to success, something happens which thwarts your plans. On the rare occasions when you do manage to achieve what you’ve set out to achieve, you tend to put that down to a ‘fluke’. August, with so much exciting lunar activity, brings much more than a pleasing development or two. Get ready for a new understanding about how to create more advantages which lead to success. August brings great potential for positive change. Call 1900 959 005. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) As soon as we hear someone shouting we become defensive. Even if it has nothing to do with us, we can’t help but wonder what’s going on… if anyone’s in trouble. If there’s anything we need to
do. We enter a state of highvigilance, even when we realise that they were just calling out to let someone know that they had arrived. This month, don’t be put off from exploring a potentially successful idea because it’s being put to you in an offputting tone. Put your focus on content rather than style in August. It’s August! To maximize your cosmic potential, call 1900 959 005. CAPRICORN (December 22 January 20) I don’t know any kids that don’t like chocolate. But, do they like it because they know, on some deep level, that it’s good for them? We grown-ups tend to think that we know what’s bad for us, but we also overlook what’s worse – depriving ourselves of what we like because we think it’s going to make us unhealthy. They say that a little of what you fancy does you good! And
a lot… well, that depends on what it is. This month, there’s no reason to think that what you want is going to end in trouble. Be generous to you. A powerful New Moon marks the start of an exciting month. Call 1900 959 005. AQUARIUS (January 21 February 19) It’s interesting that some people are full of a sense of self-importance, whilst others are so humble they almost apologise for what they do. Everyone has parts of themselves that are stronger than others. You’ve got plenty to be proud of. Recently, you’ve been focusing on what you perceive to have been an inadequate way of dealing with a relationship. You feel as if you could have done better. Get ready to be proved wrong! The events of August bring inspiring communication. You’re
back on the right track. For exciting news about what August holds for you, call 1900 959 005. PISCES (February 20 March 20) What separates yesterday from today? The distinctions between the past, present and future are like veils; we can see glimpses through them, but they prevent us from reaching either forwards or backwards. Over the course of this month, you find yourself in a rare position of being able to revisit an important part of your history and change your understanding of a decisive event. The consequences will lead to a sense of freedom and a whole, new, brighter possibility in the near future. These are exciting times. August starts with a New Moon. Make your dreams come true. ednesday 3rd July 2019 This week’s meeting had a few surprise guests attend. Attending with usual members Arthur Brown, Ross Jones, Peter McNamara and Dennis O’Neil, were Dennis’ two sisters, Bonnie from Calgary
and Sue from Ottawa, along with Bob Skinner, Commodore Liz Radajewski (fresh from her lengthy European holiday), Vice Commodore Ces Luscombe and Public Relations Officer John Traill. Scones were aplenty with Peter McNamara bringing
along Gwen’s pumpkin and ginger scones and John Traill bringing Sheryl’s cheese and chives, and date scones. Stories were aplenty with a smidgen of truth to them all! Dennis reminisced about
training a rookie Liz, and especially teaching her the three most important nots; not me, not you, and not us! Dennis has both served on crew and with the radios, with most of today’s radio operators either being trained by, or examined by, Dennis. Peter McNamara showed Sue and Bonnie through the radio room, with the best view of Bribie Island, Dennis then gave his sisters a tour of the base. Dennis has been battling leukaemia, it was great share some stories with his sisters from Canada. A pleasant morning was had by all.

ednesday 10th July 2019: – 24 members and guests turned out to watch the 3rd State of Origin rugby league game on the big screen at the VMRBI function room. The ladies of the Social Committee provided pies, hot dogs and toasted sandwiches for $3 and the bar was open from around 6pm. The game was a decider for the series and was held at ANZ
Stadium in Sydney. The game was evenly poised at half time at 8 all, the Blues lead quickly ballooned out to 20 to 8 until the last few minutes, when the Maroons pegged it back to 20 all. With only 30 seconds left it looked like going into extra time. But Blake Ferguson and James Tedesco teamed up for a miraculous try late in the 79th minute to win both the game and the series.

FISHING BRIBIE By Vin Donovan

sk any tradie around about the importance of having the right tools for the job, same goes for fishing. It can become pretty tricky when selecting a rod and reel combination to do exactly what you want it to do for certain styles of fishing. Nowadays the quality of gear on the market is unbelievable, with super smooth reliable reels, light graphite rods, super strong thin braids and fluorocarbon leaders. It’s incredible to feel the weight of a well-balanced graphite combo in action. It’s also unbelievable what some of these 4-6kg graphite spin sticks can handle. Over the last few trips, I’ve put the 20lb combos through their paces on some nice 3-6kg snapper, 6-14kg Yellowtail kings

and a heap of other mixed reefies. I’ll run a 10m plus wind on leader of between 30 and 40lb on my 20lb combos and on the 30lb combo’s I would usually run between 50-60lb leader. Over the last ten years or so I’ve mainly been targeting the nice pan size fish of between 1-4kg. Most trips we usually end up with a good catch of beautiful eating reefies. It’s hard out there some days when you have

FISHING already bagged out one species and all you keep on catching is that same species. The last two trips have been like that with Snapper. We ended up not being able to get away from the Snapper with 4 spots we fished all holding Snapper. It was a great day fishing with 3 of us fishing we caught and released over 40 plus Snapper all between 2-3kg. A lot of the ground we fish holds a variety of species including Snapper, Sweetlips, Pearl Perch, Moses Perch, Cod, Parrot and Cobia. These species are all getting taken off the Caloundra and Moreton reef systems at present. Hopefully, the great weather continues over the next few months. Now’s the time to drift the Hutchies 45-70 m zone high-speed jigging metals for kingies, Aj’s and Samsomfish. Fishing plastics around the same line will produce some great Snapper and mixed reefies. Anchoring up around Brennan’s, Flinders, Roberts, Smiths, Hutchies, Tempest and setting up a good burley trail and float lining is another great

way to enjoy the winters fishing offshore. This winter has seen higher levels of winter rainfall than in previous years. Meaning more windier days around due to all the rain squalls. The whales are out in full force so always be on the lookout for moving pods. Generally, they are quite peaceful and slow-moving other days they are more inquisitive and fast moving. When anchoring up at night offshore in the whale highway always stay alert or do what we do and move in closer to the break at Moreton or tuck in behind Flinders for the night.

Setting your drift alarm on your sounder/GPS combo is a must. In the passage, the weed still has been downright terrible. Dropped the pots out about 3 months ago and got completely weeded up. Dropped them out over school holidays and same story blanket weeded up hardcore. Hopefully, it clears up out of the passage soon. There are some nice Sandies out there at present. The winter whiting is biting well also with all the usual spots fishing well. Cockle banks, Sandhills, The Aquaculture Centre and Deception Bay fishing well. Fresh squid, worms, peeled prawns and yabbies’ are the go. Drifting around covering lots of ground is a good way to find these tasty delights.
all the passage creeks are where the Bream are getting caught. Squire, Jew and Tailor around the bridge. There’s also been some great big Tiger squid around the passage jetties, rock walls and lighted areas. So hopefully you guys get out and enjoy the next few months of colder weather and beautiful winter days of fishing, camping and boating. And “don’t destroy what you came to enjoy”….... Happy fishing!

Welcome to another beach report from Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours After the recent rain the inland track is quite muddy so be careful just before poverty point there is a very wet area and just after you pass poverty point on the left there is some very wet sand made worse by people driving through the mud just for fun, put simply, just go around. As you travel up the inland track there are only a few soft spots left. As you get to the beach and travel up and down it is a nice smooth drive once again, our resident sea eagles are

about so keep an eye out for them, last week’s tour we had an eagle swoop in at 2nd lagoon, stealing a little girls burger and then it came back to take her cookie, sadly no one expected it so no camera was ready. Now we go back to tyre pressure which we suggest 18 to 20 psi, however, if you use automatic deflators take them off once down to desired pressure, leaving
REGULAR FEATURE them on puts you at risk that should you park, the sun will heat up your tyres (if parked) and the pressure will release. Thursday night saw us recovering first a green “wicked camper” tyres at 40 psi with the caption “We don’t count the days we make the days count” we would have left them there if it had a rude caption on it. Following that we spent 5 hours recovering Belgium tourists, Thomas and Julie who spoke little English only Flemish/French, that didn’t help us at all, so we used lots of hand signals as we had done before with German, French and Italian tourists that have found themselves in trouble before, nevertheless we got the job done, they had lowered their tyre pressure by accident to 6 psi, this worked for driving straight on hard sand however on
Photo of drivers side front wheel 6 psi and below the photo of the passenger side front 6psi the tyre came right off their return the tide was in and they had to drive on soft sand, at that low pressure the tyres lost traction and the rims spun in the tyre breaking the
bead seal, deflating and coming off the rim. All in all, the beach is great the inland tracks are trafficable, so go enjoy.

SENIOR WOMEN VS NOOSA T
By Brad Litchfield
he Bribie Tigress’s made their way up to a soggy Noosa on Friday night. The rest of the Sunshine Coast games had been cancelled
(except Bribie) and with just 10 players we took on the challenge of Noosa on the back of a two-match losing streak.
BRIBIE ISLAND

The pitch was wet and muddy underfoot, but the Bribie players stood tall, knocked the ball around and played the game on the break. The ladies defence was superb in the first half and we caught the Noosa team napping out wide and Jear Cochrane coolly slotted the only goal of the game late in the first half. The second half was a tough challenge for the Bribie ladies, but they dug in deep and with determination held their line and kept the opposition out. Each side had their chances to score but the Bribie ladies held on to secure a much-needed win. Our player of the match goes to centre back Jean Dee for an exceptional defensive effort. The Tigress’s next game is against the third-placed Woombye Taipans, at Bribie

Bribie Player of the Game is Phoenix Jones Match Report for Senior Women vs Woombye written by Coach Brad Litchfield The Bribie Tigress’s hosted the Woombye Taipans on a clear cold Friday night that saw a surging third place Taipans attempt to take on our second-place ladies. The game was exciting,
and both teams attacked, although Woombye took control of the centre and the Bribie Tigress’s struggled to keep up with the pacey Taipan midfield. The Bribie strikers were well defended, and we struggled to get in behind the opposition defence, and then what opportunities we had we either put wide or struggled to get any power behind. Early in the second half the Tigress’s keeper, Courtney Johnson, went down with what could be a season ending knee injury. Our poor run with injuries has continued and the Tigress’s then struggled to get back into the game. Woombye showed their class to put three goals past us. Superb defending from player of the match, Ava Curtis, prevented more goals being scored. The Tigress’s next game is against Maleny, at Maleny on Friday the 19th July, 8:30pm kick off. Bring a blanket if you’re coming to watch.

RANTS & RAVES Greetings Bribie Magazine,
I recently read of a proposal by the Vaid family to the Moreton Bay council for future development on Bribie Island for a 5 story multi service facility. I feel that even though the Vaid family have shown good will by offering such a proposal as they may feel services are lacking on Bribie. My feelings are that the same old mistakes are being repeated with a proposal such as this. I feel Bribie has enough of the services set out in the proposal. And fear that a risk of boundaries set by over development for the population of Bribie by a consensus of a proposal like this could prevent them from receiving the services they need. There is no question that a development like this will take pressure off the public health system and its facilities such as the Caboolture hospital. Child care and elderly care is a sensitive issue and a proposal as this I fear burdens on their freedoms and social norms for instance taking children away from the ability to play outside and the elderly to enjoy a walk or stroll. What groups on Bribie could be catered for and what kind of facility would benefit our Island. The people that stand out 62
YOUR in my mind are the young and old with debilitating disabilities such as cerebral palsy for instance. In Eastern European cultures their illnesses are recognized ones and they are provided with facilities such as said proposal of a 5-story service facility. These facilities comprise of a school for learning, health professionals and specialized doctors. Swimming pools for hydrotherapies and other facilities such as gyms and access to other sporting activities, complementary treatments. They can live an almost normal day to day existence with all the services they need provided around them in one center. A sharing of complementary services could also be accessible for elderly Australians in this facility under disability schemes. Vulnerable Australians Another group of people that are not being catered for not only on Bribie but all over Queensland are people with addictions to psychotropic drugs. There is only one clinic in the South East which caters and provides such a service. These people too range from the very young with complicated health issues and disease to the very old and frail with complications such as symptoms of Dementia. I think it is a good opportunity for the Council Local Government and State Government to consider how and where its future spending needs to be aimed and what services really would aide and provide real benefit for a community. While there is good will in the community it is important not to lose sight of our responsibility to seek a more responsible future and to set and strive for future goals. It is easy to lose sight of what is important and get
SAY bogged down in the same old habits and repeating more of the same thing as this proposal reflects. Time to consider a different path away from the safe space mind set and do a little bit more for vulnerable Australians because they deserve it. Susan Kopittke, Bongaree

Dear Editor,
I would like to share with you and the readers some comments given to me from visiting prominent Journalists and their families and from a group of visitors as readers. “Very Impressive and Professional Magazine”, “A great help in discovering the Island, even got a chance to speak with Barry Clark Historian”. “We enjoyed coffee, lunch and dinner from the takeaway and dine in places all from the Bribie Islander” Would love to have seen more about the Islands Real Estate, as we were house hunting and searching agents were not always successful with a few very distressing experiences”. “Articles by Helly Kemp and Anne Matthews (Rotary) were an insight into the Island and the community, we met with Simone Wilson MP your local member and wow what a caring compassionate member of parliament you have” “So very impressed with Brooke Savige and her team as we investigated purchase on the island” all of this was an example of the positive attitude to a free magazine doing work for the community in a professional magazine better than some journals that are part of the mainstream magazine that has to be paid for. Next time you see the magazine on your front lawn, pick it up and read as you will be delighted with
Dear Editor,
Some amazing events which occur elsewhere do involve people from Bribie Island. I recently returned from a trip to Sydney to sing at Sydney Opera House with my sister (Angela Hart) and 820 other choristers. The event was a fundraiser for the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and Orchestra, conducted by Bret Weymark. It comprised three works by Beethoven: the final chorus from “Fidelio”, the Mass in C, and the “Ode To Joy” from the Ninth Symphony (hence the T-shirt logo). The choir was composed of singers from all states of Australia, plus people from the UK, US, China and New Zealand. Half of the choir sang Alto, but my sister and I were among the 40 female tenors making up 90 singers in that section. Among the altos was a well-known ABC face - the political correspondent, Laura Tingle. The event coincided with Sydney’s Vivid Festival as seen in the attached photo. To sing in such a choir, at such an iconic location was for me, the experience of a lifetime. Hazel Beneke, Banksia Beach.
