embers of Australia’s largest service organization will come together for the Lions Clubs District 201Q3 Convention at St Columban’s College in Caboolture over the 4th 6th October weekend. Over 300 Lions from as far west as Charleville, interstate and New Zealand will be attending. Lions’ members will assemble to discuss how the organization can grow its membership base and expand its service in the community. The many and varied Lions’ projects will be showcased. “The District Convention is an important event on our calendar. A range of guest speakers have been booked including representatives from Orange Sky (Laundry), Food Bank, Lions Hearing Dogs Foundation, Lions Australia Spinal Cord Fellowship and Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. District Governor, Donna Hedges says “We are very excited to have Mary O’Brien from ‘Are You Bogged Mate?’ as the keynote speaker at the Friday night’s Opening”. Mr Hadley says “The Convention is being jointly hosted by the Lions Clubs of Morayfield & District and Sandstone Point. It has been a huge exercise in planning and organisation and would not have been possible without significant sponsorship from our sponsors, including AGL, APA, Moreton Bay Regional Council, Caboolture Sports Club, Energex, Beacham Motors and Traditional Funerals. We are very grateful for their generous support. Lions are united in addressing five key focus areas for the organisation globally – Diabetes, Vision, Childhood Cancer, Hunger and Environment – to make
our world a better place. In addition, Lions are funding vital medical research projects and supporting and engaging with young people with their youth projects and more. “Whether you want to help people in need, support our youth or simply meet some new people and give back to your local community – Lions can help you do that,” says District Governor for Q3, Donna Hedges. Logs needed for Bribie woodies By Richard Whetlor

o you or anyone you know have cut down tree’s lying around? I spoke to The Woodies and they tell me that they are short of logs to cut into slabs through their mill to keep stocks up for their members and sales of slabs to help the group, they are running low and need some community help. So, can any businesses or locals help them? Peter Hunt reached out and said “Once the timber has been cut into a range of sizes for different needs, it must be dried before usable. The general rule is a year drying for each inch of thickness. Pieces cut for
turning bowls may need 4 years before usable. With over 200 club members this means a large number of logs must be coming through the shed. This is a plea to all Tree Loppers to contact us if they have anything that may be usable. We can also collect logs from back yards to prevent the waste of a good tree that might otherwise be burnt or dumped.” TREE LOPPERS let’s get a heap of logs to them and we will update the community on the locals and businesses that have donated in next Bribie Islander Gloss Magazine. Call Peter on 0490 094 814.

WILDLIFE been a great journey and they have rescued close to 20,000 birds over the years. They couldn’t think of anything better to do. However, the calls for help have dramatically increased over the last few months. They can’t put one exact reason on it. Perhaps they are just becoming better known as the place for injured and sick pelicans and birds. It’s a good thing – exactly what they were set up to do, but it’s now getting to the stage where they are struggling to cope. The recent bushfires certainly haven’t helped.
Help Needed for Pelican Twinnies
Just last night, they received a call from a man who phoned to collect an injured pelican? Managing to help him out. It was close to 2 am before they finished but it was worthwhile in the end.
D
ear Loyal Readers, we need you to read this article in full. It is sadly the reality for these guys and they need your urgent help! As you may know, The Twinnies have been rescuing pelicans for the last 19 years. We featured them on the front cover a couple of months ago. It has
“Over the past few days we have discussed, what we should do. We were put on this planet to do what
KEEP COOL THIS SUMMER FREE FROM THE SUN?
RESCUE we do best, rescue and rehabilitate our pelicans and we don’t want to slow down or turn any away.” “So, we are asking you to chip in. To help us raise $25,000 to help us expand and continue to treat sick and injured pelicans. We want to be able to keep on treating and helping every single pelican that comes our way.” $20 helps feed a pelican for one day and the usual fish bill is around $600 a week. Can you donate just $5? It’s just the cost of your next cup of coffee in the morning but one that would help them continue to save our beloved pelicans? Please also remember to mention this article amongst your family and friends to spread the word. “We are hoping that when we wake up in the morning a miracle has occurred.” The Twinnies have two pelicans from Bribie that they will be releasing on the
13th October and have been speaking to John from the VMR, should be a good day. The Twinnies are very grateful for any help they have received from Bribie Island in the past and hopefully, in the future, they like coming and rescuing there and if people see a pelican, poor darlings, just phone 0421476 561. “We hope to raise funds as one day we would love to secure a place for rehabbing and always be for birds 20 years doing this.” Some luck must come their way soon. Beefy’s wins best in Queensland!
Q
ueensland bakery Beefy’s has once again come out in front in the Official Great Aussie Pie Competition. This year the Sunshine Coast bakery has baked the Best Brekkie Pie and the Best Gluten Free Pie in Queensland. In fact, Beefy’s has landed a big bag of gold medals in the hotly contested pie industry competition, winning Gold for their Signature Steak Pie in the Plain Meat Pie category, Gold for their Aussie Special Ned Kelly Pie in the Brekkie category and Gold for their Gluten Free Steak, Bacon and Cheese in the Gluten Free category. It just proves, no matter what time of day you reach for a Beefy’s, you’ll be putting your hands on an award winner. The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition is an annual event of the
BUSINESS NEWS Australian Pie Council that celebrates the industry’s best pie makers and their passion for achieving excellence, always. The judges look for all the same things Aussie pie lovers enjoy – the perfect pastry, the right thickness, evenness and texture, and an even bake, and a filling that ticks all the boxes when it comes to quality, stability, taste and aroma. Each year the judging panel consists of TAFE trainers, chefs, bakers and bakery reps who are all experts in their field. “It’s an absolute honour to go up against the best of the best in Australia and to come out as gold medal winners and number one in Queensland,” says Beefy’s Managing Director Mark Hobbs. “Our passion and pride in making great pies hasn’t wavered since we established our business in 1997.” Beefy’s has always proudly hand-selected the freshest and best ingredients to suit their recipes and customer’s tastes and nurtured their talented bakers to consistently produce their absolute best.
Beefy’s Team Member Acacia Lanham holding the Best In Qld Brekkie Pie “We love the official awards, of course, but the reason we strive to deliver the very best is to thank our customers for choosing us,” says Mark. “There’s no greater reward for our team than to have a customer visit one of our nine Beefy’s stores or order Beefy’s for home delivery, and then to have them come back for more because they enjoyed the experience so much.”

egular visitors to the Wallum Action Group (WAG) Community Nursery know that the opportunity to pick one or more of the plants that are on display has always been limited to only three hours each week day but, following a recent decision by the dedicated volunteers who operate the nursery, garden enthusiasts will now have an extra nine hours each week to select from the extensive range that the popular nursery has to offer.

As well as being open an extra hour each week day (closing at Noon instead of 11 am),
the Bribie Community Nursery will also soon be opening from 8 am until Noon each Saturday for the convenience of their customers and WAG President David Wearne pointed out that the decision to extend the opening hours was seen as essential to cope with the ever increasing flow of customers that the nursery has been experiencing. ‘We now have extra time to provide better service to our valuable customers and also take care of the many tasks associated with the operation of the nursery,’ he said. David also made reference to the addition of a very modern hothouse which will enable all year round growing facilities on the premises. In other news from the Wallum Action Group, a unanimous decision at the recent AGM resulted in

The Community Nursery has an extensive range of plants on display to various organisations, funding the training of a service dog, purchasing diabetes pumps and much more. Anyone who would like to either find out more about what the nursery has to offer or perhaps enquire about becoming a volunteer should visit the nursery or call 0407 699 953. The southern patch reef recorded 86 spat per 100 shells (86% survival, mean size 18.9 mm, range 8-40 mm), while the northern patch reef recorded 66 spat per 100 shells (86.6% survival, mean size of 25.8 mm, range 10-72 mm). Evidence of earlier anchor damage was observed on the fence modules surrounding the southern patch reef. Both northern and southern patch reefs were being frequented by at least 7 species of finfish, as shown by videos of the south reef (available at https:// youtu.be/UZoT9tMstkc),
and north reef (https:// youtu.be/rcMGSmVrW0). Samples of 100 shells were also obtained from a 2-metre diameter patch reef 21 months after their deployment. Total spat fall per 100 shells for the cage module was nearly double that of the 9-month-old reefs (136 spat per 100 shells) with high survival (85%) and mean size 20.8 mm (range 10-52 mm, in contrast, only 43 spat per 100 shells with low survival (20.9%) was evident on the 2 meter diameter patch reef, which was heavily damaged by anchors and knocked nearly flat over 12 months ago. Evidence suggests that oyster reef restoration is feasible in Pumicestone Passage. The most serious threat is from anchor damage so boaties are invited to fish there but please don’t anchor.

‘England’s stateliest soap’, featured 52 episodes. The first episode opened in April 1912 when the heir to the title of Earl of Grantham, long-time inhabitant of Downton Abbey, dies on the ‘Titanic’. That iceberg has a lot to answer for! The final episode concluded on New Year’s Day 1926. The movie version is set in 1927 and is a continuation of the televised series. Most of the original cast are featured and the storyline centres around a royal visit to Downton Abbey by King George V and Queen Mary. Applying for a Divorce – how hard is it?
I
f your marriage has broken down, your life may have changed significantly and probably the last thing you may be thinking about is applying for a divorce. The reality is that no one is going to force you to do so, however, there might be reasons why it becomes important for you to do so such as those relating to succession law (estate planning) or if you want to remarry. Australia has a no-fault divorce system, which means that either spouse can apply for a divorce, provided they have been separated for at least 12 months. You are not required to establish that either of you has done anything wrong, nor to explain the circumstances of the separation. Your spouse does not have to agree, to apply for a divorce. Of course, you can file a joint divorce application if you both agree, however, if the other person doesn’t wish to apply for a divorce, then provided that you have been separated for at least 12 months and there is no likelihood that you will reconcile, then you can do it solo. This process involves completing an online application form, which is submitted through the Federal Circuit Court of Australia website. You are required to lodge a copy of your marriage certificate with the application. If you file an application yourself (i.e. not a joint application), then you are required to arrange for the application to be personally served on your spouse. This can be done by somebody who knows them or a professional such as a process server. When you submit the application, you will be allocated a divorce hearing date. In many circumstances you are not required to attend the divorce hearing and the Order is simply made in your absence, however, if there are children under 18 or your spouse has responded to the divorce application or in certain other situations you will need to attend. It is important to remember that when applying for a divorce you are simply applying for a legal end to your marriage. The divorce application process itself does not deal with making arrangements for the care of children or financial issues to be separated. This should be dealt with separately and you should consider the time limits which commence upon becoming divorced in regards to property settlement issues. You should seek legal advice about this if you have not undertaken a property settlement to ensure that everything is wrapped up, allowing you to move forward with certainty and finality.

WINELANDER I will be the first to admit I have a shocking memory for names and faces, there, a moment at Changi Airport when I bumped into a client I had called on for some time and spent several minutes calling him John when I realised after he had gone it was John’s partner Gordon, I suppose not being in the store was my only excuse. Therefore when a lady I had met on a boating course some three or four years ago said hello the other day it was unlikely I would remember the occasion but she was kind enough to remark that she read these articles, however, she didn’t always agree with some of the comments I made. This was music to my ears for it means that the articles sometimes are a talking point and I would be the first to admit I certainly don’t know everything about wine and I am still learning all the time.
Drinking wine has certainly changed during my time in the industry, nowadays on nearly every television show, there are occasions when someone is seen drinking a glass of wine and wine has become a talking point when people get together, far different from the beer-drinking of not many years ago. Even at the 26
Bribie Golf Club on a Friday night most tables seem to have a bottle of wine being shared by the diners, and also quite a lot of premium wines especially red wines.
A few weeks ago, I purchased half a dozen bottles of Wynns Black Label Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the Dan Murphy stores and when I got home, I noticed one of the bottles was different to the other five, it had a cork! At first, I thought maybe it was an export bottle because many countries aren’t keen on our Stelvin screw-top enclosures and our wineries still export the wines with cork. On looking a little closer I saw the offending bottle was actually from the 1995 vintage so I had the excitement of looking forward to trying a twentyfour-year-old wine which was going to be well over the hill, just about still drinkable or a surprise and still drinking well. As we had friends over for dinner last Saturday I decided this was an opportunity to see how this wine had developed remembering I hadn’t cellared the wine so had no idea how it had been stored over the years, whether it had been laid down or left standing up, subjected to temperature

fluctuations, everything about the bottle was a mystery that was about to be revealed.
As I removed the top of the capsule it was noticeable there was no wine leakage and the cork looked new and as it was pulled out of the bottle there was no wine stain anywhere, it was in perfect condition. A quick smell of the wine to see if there was anything to worry about revealing lovely aromas of blackcurrants and suggested the wine was going to be an outstanding treat, happy days! I had left the wine standing upright for a couple of hours to allow for any sediment to settle on the bottom of the bottle and it was now time to decant the wine carefully into a decanter. I poured the wine keeping an eye on the last few drops to see if there was a vein of sediment and it looked perfectly clean not even a tinge of brown, the colour was still vibrant. We were having beef cheeks which had been slow-cooked for nearly six hours and the match was perfect and to follow was a bottle of 2012 Penfolds Bin 28. To finish we had deep-fried ice cream balls which were accompanied by a Pirramimma Late Harvest
By Philip Arlidge arlidge@bigpond.com.au Riesling 2013 vintage and the evening was a great success. I was in Liquorland the other week and overheard a customer mentioning the sulphites in the wines gave her headaches and decided to read up on this subject as there are some truths and myths on this subject. Sulphites occur naturally in all wines and have been a known part of winemaking for a thousand years. Sulphites occur as part of the fermentation process, a natural by-product of the yeast metabolism during the conversion of sugar to alcohol and are completely harmless to over 99% of all people. In fact, the human body produces sulphites and there are already about 10 times more sulphites in you daily than a bottle of wine. The warnings on labels came about due to restaurants in the 1970s and 1980s protecting the spoilage on fruits and vegetables with a spray of sulphites to prevent the produce from oxidising and going brown, but unfortunately they were using up to 2,000 ppm which caused an adverse reaction in several hundred people and laws were introduced that imposed warning labels on any products with sulphites over 10ppm.
Why then do some people get headaches from red wine? First of all there is usually twice as many sulphites in white wine as there are in red but there are a host of other natural components in red wines which can cause headaches such as histamines and tannins being the main culprits, red wine contains about 30 times more histamine than white and if your body has an intolerance to histamine the number one symptom is a headache. Another cause which no-one would ever like to admit to is dehydration caused by not drinking enough water between the glasses of the wine so one way to prevent a headache is simply enjoying a couple of glasses of H2o during the evening. The bad news for sulphite sufferers is the following products contain more sulphites than a bottle of wine, canned fruit, frozen fruit, fruit syrups, jams and jellies, cereals, chips, ketchup, mustard, relish, vinegar, deli meats, sausages and canned soups to name just a few. This week I noticed that Dan Murphy’s were selling the Houghton Classic range for under $6 which as I have mentioned before the Houghton White Classic is always a very good wine and will actually cellar very well for a number of years, the wines regularly win medals at wine shows and would normally retail at around $12. Houghton was established in 1836 and is one of Australia’s oldest operating wineries. The Swan Valley Winery site has a colourful history which includes tales of pioneer Scots, bandits and generations of winemaking craftsmanship. In 1937 winemaker Jack Mann created Houghton White Burgundy using
French White Burgundy winemaking techniques in creating this wine which went on to sell 1 million bottles in 1972 the first wine to do so and has been an ever-popular wine to this day. Although the title White Burgundy can no longer be used on the bottle the current ‘White Classic’ wine crafted by winemaker Ross Pamment, who incidentally is only the 13th winemaker in Houghton’s rich history, maintains the style created by Jack Mann all those years ago. I first came across Ross 50 years ago when I coached The High Wycombe under 12’s soccer team and he was our goalkeeper in a very successful league winning team, he joined Houghton as a cellar hand in 1989, joined the winemaking team in 1999 and became senior winemaker in 2009 who would have thought back in 1982 he would one day lead Western Australia’s most awarded winery today.
Cheers, Philip Arlidge.

This is one of the disadvantages of wine, it makes a man mistake words for thoughts. Samuel Johnson And in the same vein but hundreds of years earlier... “It is the wine that leads me on, the wild wine that sets the wisest man to sing at the top of his lungs, laugh like a fool, it drives the man to dance, it even tempts him to blurt out stories better not told.” Homer
Carolyn’s Tax Tips with Carolyn Wheeler CM Wheeler & Associates
Work Cover for employees
If you are running a business and have employees, work cover insurance is compulsory should they be involved in an accident whilst on work time. Work time includes not only when at work but also travelling to and from work on your regular route. If your business employs contractors through the ABN system, and these “employees” are providing labour only, then they too must be covered under work cover. The cost is calculated on the base rates of wages not including any loading for holidays or unused annual leave paid out. Directors/shareholders/employees of companies and trusts are generally not covered through the Work Cover system but have a separate accident and sickness insurance in their own names. This is deductable to them on their personal tax return. Another insurance cover that you may not have thought of is privately employing home workers. Cleaners are the prime example, a nanny for your children or a yard maintenance person who just helps you on a casual basis. They would not have their own cover as they work casually and are not really a business. Work cover insurance covers these for a basic cost of $50 for 2 years. To apply Just go online to Work Cover.

Joseph is overcome by the injustice of it all. “I cannot remember who climbed your fence but I know it was not me!” He sits down on the grass sobbing, still protesting his innocence. I try to get him inside; away from the irate
neighbour whom I know from experience will take a little while to cool. Joseph prefers to sit under the bushes and sob. Gradually his cohorts creep out to confer with him on the injustices of adults. The washing machine technician was useless and solved nothing. I had to complain again to get satisfaction. At the weekend the children’s parents came to collect my grandkids who were very happy to see Mum and Dad and recount the injustices of the day before. Sunday, I enjoyed a quiet day but on Monday when I switched on the television, I got Agatha Christie’s Poirot in Rainbow Colours....red, yellow, purple, pink, blue, orange; well you get the idea. I rang up my television technician and he waved his wand and all went back to normal. Magic! He had de-magnetised my television.... but what had caused it to magnetise? An Alien Force Field? Worryingly, I am beginning to scratch. This could be psychosomatic, or maybe not. Nits were found on Joseph’s head on Saturday, requiring more washing of bed linen. Oh, the joys of minding young children! To all of you who are looking forward to caring for your grandchildren, remember at the end of the holidays you can return them to their parents, and sadly, they will grow up and no longer need you.

elcome to issue number 97 of The Bribie Islander. What a journey it has been so far contributing to this little local paper; connecting with you all and exploring more of our community has been a special gift. There is so much more to come and many more conversations to be had. Being born into a large family from a relatively small (and very beautiful!) town, having a mother with a unique investment in the livelihood of people and identifying with a Christian faith has moulded me. It has shaped my mind and heart towards wanting to understand and be a proactive part of community. I love community. The word itself however has somewhat of a tame and, dare I say it, lacklustre, connotation. Community - the real meaning of it - however, is anything but. I am only just beginning to unearth and ignite in my mind just how intricate and powerful and stunning this thing is. I mean, let’s just analyse the word itself. Community: a common unity, a union that is shared with everyone. Wow! Do you understand? This isn’t some nice saying that symbolises a group of people that

It shows a lack of character and breeds whatever your source of pain was in the first place. Find your dignity in loving and respecting others without hesitation. Islanders, may you have ears to hear a cry for help from your fellow man and the valour, especially if you have the obvious means, to do something about it. Riches means nothing at the end of this life if you only ever helped yourself for only a shallow hearted man thinks like this. When under-fire would you stand by your mate or cower away? And remember that not only is your mate a reflection, a version, of you but so is a stranger too. For a stranger is really no stranger at all.
How much we can learn from the acacia. Us humans are designed to have and to hold each other’s backs! Not stab something into them. When did we ever have the right to mistreat one another? That ‘right’ doesn’t exist and if it does, it’s a ‘wrong’. The thing is, we are not seeing just how interconnected we are from

the lizard brain to react in a certain way, without thinking much. Training is best started young, used with calm consistency, and plenty of rewards. The lizard brain reacts to fear or threat in violent, unpredictable and self-preserving ways. Thus, training must first involve conditioning to be calm and focused on you as the leader. Creating predictable patterns of behaviour is the goal of training.

NATURE Searching for food
Little Egret Egretta Garzetta By Marj Webber
L
ittle Egrets are a species of heron and a common sight on Bribie Island. They are easily distinguished from other white Egrets as they have black legs and bills and are the smallest of their species. They are 55-65 cm in length and weigh 250-300 g. The plumage is all white with some yellow naked skin on the face and under the feet. Usually, they are silent but during breeding or if alarmed their voice is loud and croaky. Both salt and freshwater wetlands are their preferred habitat and they are found over most of Australia except in the very dry regions of WA, NT and SA. They are nomadic when in need of new feeding grounds. Some are migratory and travel to Tasmania during the winter. They are more common in the northern parts of Australia and are also found in 36
www.thebribieislander.com.au
Africa, PNG, Asia and Europe and are gradually moving into other countries. Little Egrets are entertaining to watch when feeding as they are energetic and move rapidly, darting here and there in their search for food. In shallow water from about 10-15 cm, they dash about flapping their wings, lifting their legs and darting for prey usually alone but sometimes with other Egrets. Diet consists mainly of fish, amphibian creatures and insects. Feet are scraped along the mud or sand to flush out aquatic prey which is quickly pounced on then devoured. As with other Egrets, little Egrets develop beautiful white plumes during the breeding season. These form on the breast and back as well as two long plumes on the head. Sometimes some of these plumes remain with the egrets after the season has finished.

They breed in colonies in trees or mangroves on or near water with mostly other Egrets, Ibises, cormorants and spoonbills. Nests are untidy platforms of sticks mostly lined with leaves. 4-6 blue-green eggs are laid and are incubated by both male and female for about 20-25 days. Both parents care for the young and in about 26 days the chicks move out of their nests and perch on the nearby branches. Soon afterwards they begin to fly.
During times gone by Egrets were served with other meats in feasts and at royal tables in England. During the reign of Mary 1st 1000 egrets were slaughtered and served at one banquet alone. As well as being used for food, they were being killed to obtain the plumes for hats and other
In Breeding Plumage fashion requirements. There came a time when they became scarce all over Europe and it wasn’t until the 1900s when the killings stopped that their numbers began to increase. Reclamation of tidal lands and swamps
Compare Little Egret and Great Egret can be a threat as well as eggs and babies being stolen by other birds and reptiles. They adapt kindly to manmade shallow wetlands and their conservation status is secure for now. Their average lifespan is about 5 years.

t seems like many people suffer from Rest Less Syndrome and sleeplessness, more than I expected. ‘Restless Leg Syndrome is a neurological disorder also known as Willis-Ekbom disease. RLS causes unpleasant sensations in the leg, along with a powerful urge to move them. For most people, that urge is more intense when they are relaxed or trying to sleep. People with RLS are likely to have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep because symptoms are worse at night and it will cause sleep deprivation, which could harm physical and emotional health. RLS may be linked to a disruption in the dopamine pathways in the brain. The difficulties for people with RLS is that it interferes with their sleep, causing ongoing daytime sleepiness and fatigue.’ Healthline.com For those people who came to Bribie Simply Healthy seeking natural remedies for release symptoms of RLS and sleep problems, I have been suggesting Ultra Muscleze Night, and the results seem very effective. ho would have thought that from humble beginnings 90 years ago in 1929 when eight men and four ladies of the Windsor Bowls Club formed the initial committee of the Bribie Island Bowls Club, floating the clubhouse originally owned by The Moreton Bay Tug Company on 44-gallon drums from Moreton to Bribie, that in 2019 our Club would be making its mark as one of our country’s top bowls clubs? From the building of the first green in 1929 from sand and ashes of the MS Koopa, to our 90th year in 2019, our club still boasts four outdoor greens: Cressey, Campbell, Bell and Loi–Pettitt. In 2018 and 2019, the Bribie Island Bowls Club was bestowed the

honour of Bowls Club of the Year (Large) by Bowls Queensland and today boasts ultra-modern facilities for its social and bowling members. When our Club celebrated it’s 70th year the BIBC enjoyed three greens, a membership of around 442 men and 211 ladies, 41 paid staff, 60 poker machines, $2.50 lunch and dinners together with the best drink prices around. When our Club celebrated it’s 80th year the BIBC enjoyed four championship greens, a membership of 386 men and 216 ladies plus a strong junior contingent of 14, 54 paid staff and approximately 6500 social members and 120 poker machines. NOW in our 90th year, the BIBC still enjoys 4 Championship greens whilst most Bowls Club are in Queensland are removing them from their clubs. Membership stands at 271 men and 131 ladies and 6426 Social Members. We hold one of the largest payrolls on Bribie Island with the employment of 36 staff members. marks the 90th anniversary of Bribie Island Bowls Club. The Club had humble beginnings in 1929, a result of some Brisbane bowlers wanting somewhere they could play on this beautiful island. Without doubt those founders and pioneers would be very pleased if they could see the Club today. The foresight they had shown paved the way for us as a Club and established some very strong work ethics for the countless volunteers that have followed in their path, to help create what is now considered to be the Best Bowls Club in Queensland. The Club’s 90th is a momentous achievement and cause for great celebration. This historic milestone marks 90 years of fellowship and service to our community.
Bribie Island Bowls Club will continue to supportive member of our community and true to the charter of supporting and fostering Lawn Bowls. For all our Members and visitors, we offer a friendly and comfortable venue to enjoy a meal, a drink or entertainment. In contemplating the future, we should reflect on past good fortunes and achievements to guide the members towards maintaining high standards and the involvement with the local community. It is reassuring that our efforts are appreciated by the community, which is demonstrated by the support we receive from all sectors of Bribie Island and surrounds. We are justifiably proud for making a difference for our Community. This sentiment is a strong part of everything we do at the club and
acts as an important part of our daily operations and business decisions. We must, however, attract new Bowlers to stimulate and to keep the sport fresh and growing, to be complacent on this issue would be disastrous. We support a growing barefoot interest, with regular games on the weekends for those wishing to have a try at our great sport. Our renovations have been completed and we have an exciting new venue and the ability to offer more and deliver these products to you quickly. Our point of difference has always been our friendly staff and the service they provide to you. This will continue to be our focus for the coming years ahead as we go into the future with a positive and optimistic outlook.

It gives me great pleasure to be a part of the celebrations on the 90th anniversary of Bribie Island Bowls Club. Our 90th anniversary of our founding is also a time to look forward to the bright future ahead for the club. There is no doubt we can consider ourselves an established, mature and reputable Club. We currently have 36 employees; many have been with us for more than 10 years. In short, we have many loyal and experienced staff and enthusiastic recent additions. I believed this is what contributed to the success of the Club. Over the last few years, the Club has improved our quality of service tremendously. Our staff are focused on the direction, with a common goal: that goal is To Exceed Expectations. This culminated in being awarded the Best Bowls Club in Queensland for the last two years. Our customer service today is more of a focus because we face tremendous competition from other Clubs and hotels. There is no doubt that each and every one of us has worked harder than ever before improve our already great standard of service. On behalf of the staff I would like to thank the members of the 42

Board for their tireless efforts in pursuit of the best interests of this Club. There have been some challenging times which have required additional meetings and Directors have made many personal sacrifices by putting the Club first. I would particularly like to thank the Chairman, Peter Patrikeos and the entire Board for the time and assistance they have offered. Finally, I would like to thank the staff for the enormous contribution they have made to the success of the Club. Many are surprised by how small our team is when they see the scale of the events that we conduct. I am proud to lead a team that is so professional and hard working in every endeavour they undertake. Going forward things in our industry may be tough. Many other Clubs will not be able to survive and unfortunately close. Some will emerge stronger, and larger than before. Our job is to do

THE MOYLE FAMILY STORY In 1926, just 14 years after the construction of the Jetty at Bongaree, John Mathew Moyle together with his wife Georgina made a break from their farm near Roma to start a new life on Bribie Island.
The following advertisement appeared in the Brisbane Courier Mail, on Saturday 10th April 1926 soon after the Moyles arrived on Bribie. BRIBIE “CARLTON HOUSE” the oldest and most up-to-date boarding house on the island, visitors are assured of the best attention, combined with cleanliness and good table. Mrs J. Moyle, ‘Proprietor.” In those early days, there were only five guesthouses on Bribie offering basic accommodation for a maximum of 85 people, when the resident population was only about twice that. Most of the thousands of regular visitors from Brisbane camped in canvas tents they brought with them and erected along the foreshore at Bongaree.

Leasing a Café Kiosk at the Jetty, the Moyle’s were heavily involved in early tourism. Cooking “Hot Fish Dinners” beside the Jetty they serviced the hundreds of visitors in the kiosk, dining room and guesthouse at the Jetty, as the regular Steamships Koopa and Doomba unloaded passengers after the three-hour trip from Brisbane. Their great-grandson Trevor Sutton and his wife Lilian have recently moved from Tasmania to retire on Bribie and bring valuable historical connections to the early pioneer days when Bribie had just a few residents, but many hundreds of regular visitors.

As a young boy, on holiday with his parents from Roma, Trevor Sutton remembers visiting his very old Great Grandfather. Trevor recalls some these memories... “He was preparing for the arrival of his customers off the Steamship by firing up a couple of water boilers to make hot tea in four-gallon kerosene tins, then sitting back in an armchair with his penknife and plug of tobacco for his pipe”. The Moyle’s had a great reputation for their fish dinners and were exceptionally busy when the boats arrived at the Jetty. Members of the family often helped out, including daughters, Alice, May, Doris, Cate, Amy and sons John and Edwin. There were amazing numbers of very large groupers caught from the jetty and the Moyles witnessed many strung up close to their kiosk. Edwin Moyle married Mavis Shields, another pioneer Bribie family, and were the first people married in the new Methodist Church on Bribie in 1928. The church had been a school at Narangba and Deception Bay, before being transported to Bribie and reerected in Banya Street.
It still stands in Banya Street today but is now the Freemasons Hall, painted light blue. Their son Charlie Moyle, born on Bribie in 1931, now resides at Gatton and has just celebrated his 87th birthday!
When they retired, John and Georgina Moyle remained in Banya Street while their daughter Doris and her husband Colin Phillips and his brother Syd looked after the business. Their youngest daughter Alice married Cliff Rigbye, and Alice worked with her parents throughout the war years when he served in RAAF. Another remarkable coincidence, many years later for Cliff Rigbye, was when he sold his general store in Crow’s Nest to Joyce Voysey’s family.
Edwin Moyle and Mavis Shields wedding Banya St Mavis Shields was the youngest daughter of Alfred Shields whose house was on Toorbul Street, next to where Brennans Store was later built. Alfred and his sons, Eddie and Gordon, often provided deep sea fishing services for parties staying on Bribie Island. His wife Trixie had a kiosk originally, owned by the Campbells, on the Jetty that
Years later Joyce was the author of a book ‘A Girl from Bribie,’ launched by the Bribie Island Historical Society in 2009. The book launch was attended by my mother Rae Sutton, granddaughter of Mathew and Georgina Moyle and grandsons Rex and Ray Rigbye. “For most of her early life, my mother Rae was a regular visitor to Bribie Island often staying to help her grandparents.” During one visit as a young lady, she raised eyebrows by wearing the latest style twopiece bathing costume.

When her father later saw the photo, he asked for the bathing suit, so that he could later destroy it saying …. “No daughter of mine will be seen running around in such a skimpy outfit.” “My mother’s first visit to Bribie was as a 12-year-old after her mother put her on a train in Roma and sent her unaccompanied to Bribie Island, to help grandmother Moyle for a few weeks and have a holiday. “On arrival in Brisbane her Aunt Doris’ boyfriend met her at Roma Street Station prior to being taken down to catch the ‘Koopa’ across to Bribie.” “Aunt Doris was planning her wedding and decided that her fiancé should have his teeth seen by a dentist in Brisbane. He had work carried out and this required an anaesthetic procedure. There were fatal complications with the anaesthetic and he did not recover.” CONTINUES OVER PAGE >>

One of Mum’s friends from Bribie was Kitty Freeman, the daughter of the man whose family ran the Bribie Post Office. I think she was only 13 when Kitty called at the kiosk to see if she could come and help her father to take a seriously injured man across to Redcliffe for urgent medical treatment? Mr Freeman was called to help in emergencies, as there was limited first aid on the Island. The injured man was brought to the jetty with a gaping wound where he had been impaled on a spike!
It was a long trip in the little motorboat to get him to medical treatment in Redcliffe, and they did not get back to Bribie until very late that night. My mother recalled the incident quite vividly because she neglected to tell Grandmother that she was going off to Redcliffe, in the panic to help. She was in big trouble!
RETURN TO BRIBIE IN 2019 “We are delighted that Trevor Sutton has joined the Historical Society Committee, and shared with us these fascinating family photos and stories of early Bribie.”
“It is a very small world!!”
MORE BRIBIE HISTORY The Historical Society has monthly public meetings at the RSL Club on the second Wednesday of each month commencing at 6:30 pm. Now living in Dayboro, she was born in England but has spent most of her life in different areas of Queensland. During this time, she took the opportunity to attend as many workshops as possible, including programs organised by the Flying Art School and the University of Southern Queensland.
Trudy has tutored watercolour classes for the Redcliffe Art Society for the last few years. She loves that watercolour paint appears to have a mind of its own which the artist can utilise to enhance the creativity of the work. Her inspiration comes from our brilliant Australian watercolour artists like Greg Allen, Alvaro Castagnet, Joseph Zbukvic and David Taylor. She says she is fascinated by the way these artists use the white of the paper to capture light in their works. Trudy’s art ranges from conventionally realistic to intuitive abstracts. She likes to experiment with different media and substrates, in oil, acrylic, watercolour, alcohol inks and mixed media. Recently she has also had success in competitions with her digital art. Her passion at present is experimenting with ways to combine digital art with other media including alcohol ink. Examples of Trudy’s work can be seen on her facebook page, Trudy Brooks Art. Meet Trudy over morning tea at Bribie Island Community Arts Centre on Friday, October 25 at 10.30am and hear her speak about her art journey. Book for catering on 3408 9288. Light on Grapes

O
ver the mountains down to the sea, beautiful countryside like we enjoy here in SE Queensland seems to inspire an outpouring of artistic expression and a large community of artists.
From both sides of our heritage-listed Glasshouse Mountains hinterland and Bribie artists are collaborating on an exciting exhibition to be held in our spacious Matthew Flinders Gallery. A newly formed group of artists from the Hinterland is collaborating with Bribie artists in an exciting exhibition ‘Hinterland
Artists – Maleny and Beyond’ share a lot with their counterparts – the contemporary Arts Practices group (CAP) on Bribie from Tuesday 17th September to Saturday 5th October. The Maleny artists recently formed their group to explore workshops, learn new techniques and find the opportunities to exhibit outside their area. All are experienced artists looking to advance their art by participating in workshops, group activities and opportunities to exhibit outside their area. There is a common theme in that most are moved by their Pumicestone Oyster by Tina Galloway environment and seek to express their view of this most scenic part of Australia. This will be CAP’s 5th exhibition this year starting with a Wearable Art exhibition, exhibiting at the Old Fire Station Gallery Redcliffe, Vianta coffee shop Beerwah and their 4th annual Eclectica exhibition at Matthew Flinders. CAP’s winner of the recent Matthew Flinders Prize Christine Miles will Landscape by Anna Casey

HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY
The “Sexyful” Mr Dance OBE
even greater surprise is that everyone calls him Charlie. At 40 he is a family man with two children, Oliver 12 and Rebecca six.
By Helly Kemp
A
n odd word, ‘sexyful,’ but somehow more powerful and descriptive than ‘sexy,’ and if that word applies to anyone, it does more so to the dashing Charles Dance, than any other show business celebrity I have ever met. As we are having a tête-à-tête in London in 1986, sitting on a traditional S-shaped English loveseat, facing each other, but retaining that modest barrier between us, the blonde Charles Dance originally from Worcestershire, oozes such sex appeal that it is almost intimidating, yet inoffensive because there is no arrogance, just a friendly bubbling self-confidence. This has taken me by surprise, as Dance is nothing like his image: the archetypal, glacial Englishman – reserved and distant, introspective and infinitely private. Instead, he is breezy and waves his arms about a lot when making a point. But an
www.thebribieislander.com.au
His acting skills, whether the perfect villain or shrewdest politician, are so incredible, that Charles is never short of work. This year he has three major movies released – Shirley Maclaine’s OUT ON A LIMB, in which he stars as the mysterious MP lover; Eddie Murphy’s, GOLDEN CHILD, where he portrays the sly devil; and as a film director character in GOOD MORNING BABYLON. But it is only 2 years ago in 1984 that Charles soars high as the star of TV’s JEWEL IN THE CROWN, while his acting debut in the original mystery TV series FATHER BROWN, dates back to 1974 and his cinematic debut FOR YOUR EYES ONLY to 1981. “We all like our egos pampered from time to time,” he chuckles with warmth in his voice, “but I don’t read a part like Guy Perron in THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN, and think that’s going to turn me into a sex symbol.
Helly’s 1986 Living Magazine Interview “As an adolescent, I didn’t have acne or other teenage problems. Instead, I developed an unexpected, awful stammer. And so, I got stuck with a label – stammerers’ aren’t supposed to be very bright. My confidence slid away. I suppose I was lucky, because when I turned 18 my stammer disappeared over three weeks, as strangely as it had come.” So, Charlie lost his ‘stupid’ label and his confidence gradually returned. But acting is just one of Charles’s deep-seated and amazing talents: With both screenwriting and directing films, encouraged by his having studied graphic design and photography, he will choose Judy
“I’m not a star. I regard myself as a character actor because if you’re going to call yourself a star, you have to continually produce something that is instantly recognizable and I don’t want to do that.” He must be one of the most prolific performers ever as the decades go on, for Charles will have done over 180 movies, TV series and programs, live theatre performances, narrating audiobooks, video games and documentaries, including six episodes of National Geographic’s Savage Kingdom - their most expensive WILD TV series ever.
Dance’s villainous faces in days to come 58
“I’ve never had a chip on my shoulder,” the slim, 190cm tall Mr Dance assures me, “although I did start to think I was ready for better parts about five years before I got them!”
But he has not always been this confident he admits nostalgically.

REGULAR FEATURE Dench and Maggie Smith for my favourite, and his most successful screenplay and directing box office movie, LADIES IN LAVENDER. Dance will also win the PARIS FILM FESTIVAL AWARD FOR BEST ACTOR in the Canadian KABLOONAK one of his most impressive movies while accomplishing his biggest dream: travelling. But right now, the man who always surprises his audience with each different villainous role only wants to talk about labels, not his next starring movie, WHITE MISCHIEF, the erotic Murder mystery drama in Kenya, with GRETA SCACCHI, nor the future. “I believe you must ignore labels. They are hard to live with for everyone. When people have a certain image of you, even when it has been made up by someone else, they still assume it’s
Striking Film In Kenya a label you have put on and you are proud to wear.” “So then you are obliged to uphold that image, and when you do something out of character, people begin to tear you apart because you’re not what you are supposed to be – even though you never said you were that in the first place.” “It does present a problem because instead of having to live up to your own expectations – which is difficult enough – you have to live up to other people’s. It’s not on. You should always insist on being yourself.” His looks don’t concern Charles either, but his both distinctive and distinguished voice, once heard is never forgotten.
National Geographic’s Most Expensive Wild Series
“Look at me – I’ve got an odd face. For a start my nose is bent. If I blink with these heavily hooded eyelids it’s like barn doors closing. If I have a
Tv Series single late-night, the lines under my eyes get darker still, the bags heavier and the angles from which they can photograph me even more limited.” He isn’t fishing for compliments. He means it and believes he is plain. “It’s not a classical looking face. I just don’t have film star looks.” None of which has stopped him being hailed Britain’s answer to Robert Redford. Dance shakes his head in dismay. “But Redford is really good looking - a phenomenal star with an undeniable screen presence. Comparing me to Redford is hardly flattering to him, is it?” he laughs. makers of Bribie Island since the 1950s and have relocated to Banksia Beach in 2018. With your failures, Be brave and persistent. Own them, like you own the sun. Till your last breath, Be like the dragon, And ride the wild wind. NATIVE BEES It is September again the garden has been mulched Just the organic matter from the kitchen shelf Just mix it with the grass clippings as well So there you have a fermenting smell But the plants in the garden just love this food It brings the insects and bugs and they bring their tools Breaking down all the matter for the worms to eat The birds just think it is a festival treat The bird bath is a respite from the warm sun For the birds and native bees have to drink on the run Shelter food water and shade are a perfect place for them to play The native bees feed on the flowering plants While the grevillea tree blossoms keep make the parrots dance The butcher birds and
We harvest the honey just once a year The old Queen dies and a new one appears She has her own colony and starts from scratch She works like the soldiers always flat chat They do not take holidays or have a bank loan Flying out focused like drones Some get taken by the birds as they hang around their house No time to be complacent on bee lookout They land on the rocks in the bird bath as well Wetting their feet and having a spell But Spring heats up and the butterflies are out So I have to make sure there are flowers about Keeping a food supply is a full time job But if it were not for the bees all our food supply would be gone Written by Sharmayne Kurtz 24/08/2019

YOUR ZODIAC FORECAST
OCTOBER Teletopia. Max call cost $1.32 per minute, including GST. Higher charges from mobiles/payphones may apply. Customer care: 1300 366 702.
By Oscar Cainer
H
alloween, at the end of the month, brings ghosts and ghouls out to play. This year, it coincides with Mercury turning retrograde, so we can expect a few gremlins to surface too! As the planet of commerce and communication turns backwards on the Brexit deadline, it brings opportunities to recognise and correct mistakes. But it’s the Full Moon which creates October’s best opportunities for renegotiating complex relationships. If we strive hard and dig deep, surprising progress is possible. ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Things are improving. If you’re unable to see any evidence of progress, it’s because the work is going on behind the scenes. It’s as if the curtain has come down at the end of an act, and you’re in front of it, performing to the audience. Meanwhile, the stagehands are rushing about, moving the scenery around and creating a different landscape. If you peered behind the curtain, it would still look messy. But disorder is just part of the process of sorting things out. Act with confidence in October, and all will go very well. Your October forecast will be very rewarding. Call 1900 959 005. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) When there’s something you want, what stops you from getting it? Is there something standing in your way? Although October doesn’t quite bring a road paved with gold that will lead you to a longcherished dream, it does offer insights into why you’ve struggled to do what you want to do, and what you can do to get where you want to go. As mysterious Pluto changes direction, it brings a shift in attitude and a deepening of your understanding. Commit to a plan, and you can take steps to make it come true. For great news on the exciting opportunities in October, call 1900 959 005. GEMINI (May 22 - June 22) Although your mind is clear about what you want to achieve in October, your ruler’s change of sign, at the start of the month, indicates that the planets have other ideas. And no one wants to get into an argument with the cosmos! This is a month when your skills of diplomacy and adaptability come to the fore. You don’t need to accept what’s being foisted on you. Neither should you enforce your ideas. As Pluto changes direction, go with the flow; the outcome of the drama that’s playing out will benefit you. Take advantage of October’s exciting cosmic climate. Call 1900 959 005. CANCER (June 23 - July 23) What are your plans for October? Would you like to bring peace to the world? Save our high streets? Negotiate helpful international discussions? Abolish poverty?

Find homes for the homeless? Educate the ignorant? Get rid of prejudice? Find a cure for cancer? Abolish modern-day slavery? Tackle food waste? Or you could do what everybody does, and just carry on with your life as usual. The world is full of good intentions. Yet this month, if you really want to make a significant difference, you can! A new month! A forecast that could transform your life! Call 1900 959 005. LEO (July 24 - August 23) There’s a decision to be reached this month. If you find the choice difficult to make, it won’t be due to things not being as good as you hope they’ll be; it’s that they’re going too well. You may even find yourself wondering if you can allow yourself to accept what life is offering, because it seems too good to be true. So, ask yourself if it’s what you want… and then, when you remember that it’s what you’re working towards, as long as you’re prepared for the consequences of being happy, you can have it. October is due to be amazing! For fourminutes of news call 1900 959 005. VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) When you first arrive on a beach, it’s not easy to tell what the tide is doing. Even if the sea seems to be a long way out, you can’t be sure that your towel will stay dry if you head in for a swim. Waves look the same whether they’re rolling in or out. You need to observe them for a while before you can work out which way they’re heading. Similarly, you need to wait for more evidence before being able to assess a situation properly. As Pluto changes direction this month, you’ll discover all that you need to know. For encouraging news about what October holds, call 1900 959 005. LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) Is there anything different about being a year older this time around? Well, with mysterious Pluto changing direction around your birthday, it seems that you really are getting older and wiser! As Pluto symbolises rebirth and transformation, this is a perfect time for you to reconsider your priorities and take charge of your own destiny. You’re not a victim of circumstances. You have the power to make happen what you want to happen; and to change what you want to change. A new era is beginning. There’s so much to tell you about October! Call 1900 959 005. SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) You can be almost too smart sometimes. Some of your ideas dazzle with such brilliance that people are unable to see the power of your insight. Even you can be overwhelmed by the depth of your awareness. Which doesn’t mean that you always get it right. Just like the rest of us, you’re capable of making errors of judgment. As your ruler, Pluto, changes direction, it enables you to pick up the pieces of a past decision and use them
The Bribie Islander
to build a new and exciting vision of the future. Your brilliance is back. Make your dreams come true in October! Call 1900 959 005. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) Some people use complicated words to increase their status. Other folk find power-dressing helps them to feel more important, and gain prestige. You, on the other hand, don’t need to use props in order to get the respect and attention you need; just being yourself is enough. In the first days of October, as Pluto changes direction, you might find that you feel more vulnerable than usual, and need a defence mechanism to protect you from harsh reality. Self-confidence will do the trick. That will be easy to find. There’s excellent news in your October prediction. Call 1900 959 005. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Your world doesn’t need any extra confusion. So, it will come as a relief to learn that life, in October, is going to be less bewildering than it has been. Phew! rew took a trip over to the Sandstone Point Hotel to help the fundraising team and to catch up with some of the families that were celebrating Father’s Day. The vessels were a great attraction, especially for the kids.

The kids enjoyed climbing aboard and looing over Bribie 2.

REGULAR FEATURES Whales swimming by the boat and along the beautiful Pumicestone Passage. The fishermen have been catching some good size Whiting, size around 30cm and bigger, reports from the surfside, just by the second and third lagoons and also at Skirmish Point, Red Beach and in the passage too. The best bait seems to be live blood worms.

We are also seeing some good size bream caught at Poverty Creek with Ocean Beach only having nine campsites open, due to the recent fires, we are seeing a lot of campers venturing to this destination. One of our avid anglers has been out between Bribie Island and Moreton Bay, he said. “I caught nothing because I had the Whales about 10 metres off my boat on Saturday.” He went again on Sunday only to have dolphins swimming around his boat looking for a feed. It seems we are not the only ones out there fishing! Remember to stay safe, respect our beautiful island and enjoy the great outdoors, here on beautiful Bribie Island, Queensland, enjoy!

Beach REPORT By Michael and Rick at Gateway Discovery Tours
W
elcome to another Bribie beach report from Gateway Discovery Tours. The northern track is still closed until late October or until further notice due to the recent bushfire. The track from White Patch to Poverty Creek is extremely dry, powdery and very soft,
as it gets hotter and without rain, it will get worse. Please be aware of the fire bans currently in place, to gat an update visit https://parks. des.qld.gov.au/park-alerts/ With the great warmer weather, we are experiencing, snakes that are starting to come out of hibernation. We observed a two-meter brown snake on the beach access track at Woorim, please do keep an

eye out for them and stay well away. The track from Eighth Avenue car park at Woorim, which leads to the beach is really soft in places like the first bend, it’s pretty rough and also watch out for the 400mm drop off onto the beach access. On our recent tour up the beach on Saturday we observed lots of families enjoying the school holiday’s on Ocean Beach, especially at the second lagoon, so please be watchful for children and others whilst driving on the beach access. When travelling up the beach make sure you have plenty of water just in case you break down and you might have to wait for a while to get out, make sure you let your tyres down to 20psi, if your vehicle is low to the ground, don’t drive
Soft sand conditions make it easy to get bogged in deep ruts otherwise your underbelly will drag and cause you to get bogged. Remember to keep an eye out for people and kids running around on the beach access, stay safe, plan your journey, check tide the times and enjoy what Bribie Island has to offer.

SOCCER New Committee (LtoR): Stuart Cooper, Dee Greig, Jason Holloway, Nicole Jones, Jacob Hernandez (Absent Michelle Mcnalty) It was great to see the junior players having fun, letting off steam and celebrating their achievements. The day was great, there was a couple of little hiccups that the new committee has taken on board, but we have had a very positive response. Thank you to the volunteers who stepped forward on the day to help out.

Dear Editor, Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors visit Pumicestone Passage Probus. It is so sad that Australian wildlife is disappearing at an alarming rate. Increasing road traffic, domestic pets, and land clearing are removing the habitat for so many of our wildlife. But help is at hand thanks to amazing young people.
The Australian Zoo Wildlife Hospital is giving wildlife a second chance. The project began as a dream by Steve Irwin’s mother and initially started in a converted packing shed. Steve Irwin developed this and the family are helping wildlife not just in Australia but in other parts of the world where animals are in grave danger. In 12 months between 6,000 and 8,000 wild animals are brought to the zoo. The zoo is the largest purpose-built wildlife hospital of its type in the world. It is possible to visit the hospital and see the patients! How fantastic that young people like Jess and Emily do such excellent work. They gave an excellent presentation to Pumicestone Passage Probus and many members made donations. Well done girls. Kathy Vincent, Bribie.

Dear Editor, USC Moreton Bay will offer a new degree program in Electrical and Electronic Engineering when it opens in January 2020 to meet the growing international job market in new energy sources. Dr Robi Islam, Senior Lecturer in Electrical Engineering, said the program isn’t just a coup for south-east Queensland, but students globally. “This is a popular bachelor at tertiary institutions worldwide but the program at USC Moreton Bay will be offered in brand new labs with the most up-to-date and future-facing technology available,” Dr Islam said. “Electronic engineering is changing every single day and at a rapid pace, so it’s an incredible opportunity to offer the latest in innovation to the first cohort of students,” he said. Regards, Janelle Kirkland
