In an exciting first for Queensland a community group has obtained the $30,000 funding to kick off research into the restoration of shellfish reefs in Pumicestone Passage. The money was donated by the Moreton Bay Regional Council and Unity Water to match the $50,000 privately raised by the Pumicestone Passage Restocking Association.

Together these groups will work alongside Fishing World’s own marine biology editor Dr Ben Diggles (pictured above), Traditional Owners, Sunfish North Moreton and SEQ Catchments to undertake the mandatory planning and permitting to get the research started. Previous councillor for Moreton Bay Division One (current during the donation and original planning) Gary Parsons said he has been involved with the restoration project since day one. “I’m all for helping waterways that is why I allocated funds from myself and the mayor’s funds to do the experiment works,” Mr Parsons said. In the past 150 years there has been a 96% loss in the Pumicestone Passage oyster population. Mr Parsons said the damage is due to

the growth of the region. “If we can all get together on the shellfish restoration it will help tourism, the environment and fishing in this pristine area,” Mr Parsons said. “It is incredibly important to resurrect the reefs and the fish habitat areas for the recreational anglers and especially to get the environment up to speed. “The plan is to alleviate the destruction not to have 100 years more of destruction. We should learn from the mistakes of the past and I believe we are but if we work as a team we will achieve better results faster.” In the past fish and shellfish were extremely abundant in Pumicestone Passage. Moreton Bay’s oyster industry hit its peak in the 1980s and has since declined as the impacts of catchment development and multiple floods began to take place. The decline of the regions fisheries began around the same time. Despite the establishment of the Moreton Bay Marine Park in 1993 and the expansion of the resulting Green Zones in 2009, local fishing groups have become progressively alarmed by the constant deterioration in water quality and fish numbers brought on by increasing sediment, nutrient and pollution loads. And while shellfish might make for a tasty meal they are also important to our ecosystem. Shellfish filter the water and tie up the base of the estuarine food chain, providing food and shelter for fish and crabs as well as applying nutrients and shoreline protection. The health of an oyster reef impacts the health of fisheries and research initiated in America has shown it’s possible to regain the lost ecosystem services provided by shellfish reefs through shellfish reef restoration.

Saturday night a distress call saw Queensland Water Police activate VMR Bribie Island to rescue an infant child with a high temperature and a rash from a vessel just off Moreton Island. The 27 foot vessel with 10 people on board of which 4 were children was heading to the wrecks at Tangalooma to shelter from the weather (3 to 4m seas). On arrival at Moreton Island, all that were aboard the vessel were now on the beach and the Queensland Ambulance Serviceofficers assessed that the baby was well enough to make the voyage to Redcliffe. Energex Bribie One was then tasked with transporting the two QAS officers and the sick child with the mother to Redcliffe to an awaiting ambulance then on to the Redcliffe Hospital. With very heavy seas VMR’s new boat could only manage about 7 knots, taking almost 2 hours, it is capable

Congratulations to the skipper Ian Grimes and his crew: Nathan Gundry, Andrew McAlister and Denise Inggs for a fantastic job in very trying conditions. Ian commented that “the vessel handled very well in the heavy seas”.

THANK-YOU! THANK-YOU! THANK-YOU!! By Deb Neill

Team Mayyada held their World’s greatest Shave event on Sunday, 13th March to raise much needed funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. They managed to raise a total of $5249.00!

A great effort with so much support from staff, friends, family, and the wonderful customers of Mayyada Bazaar. What a fantastic day, filled with fun, shaving of heads (of course), and love and support. Leanne’s mum, Eve, was the inspiration behind the event, being diagnosed with cancer late last year and losing her hair to chemotherapy treatments. Leanne’s mum shaved Leanne’s long hair down to an almost bald head on the day, and what an emotional moment that was. Lyn, a friend and customer, Matt (Leanne’s son), and Billy (Leanne’s son-in-law) all joined in for the big shave, now sporting their totally new looks. Leanne said, ‘The best part of the day for me was seeing my mum totally comfortable without any covering on her head for the whole day. She was in a safe place with so much love and support, it was just beautiful. She even got a butterfly & flower painted on her head. My mum is such an inspiration to me and so many other people, and one of the strongest people I know, I have so much admiration for her I can’t put it into words.’ There were other cancer sufferers supporting the day, and the energy on the day was so positive. This was such a great fund raiser to be involved in. It’s nice to know that we have taken part in supporting cancer patients, and acknowledging that they are not alone on their journey.

Whilst no one will deny the need for higher education, many questions have now been raised re the Petrie site for what has now been labelled the mayor's signature University project. This site is listed on the Environmental Management Register of the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection. Approximately half of the area for the development of the University is recorded as a previous site for the storage of bulk chemical and petroleum products, subject to contamination of hazardous PCB contaminants recorded at nine times higher than considered safe levels. (90mg/Kg of soil) PCBs are extremely noxious contaminants, banned and phased out in the 1970s due to their unacceptable environmental impacts, including bio-accumulation in humans, fish and mammals.

PCBs bond strongly to soil and organic matter with an extremely slow rate of decay. Their adverse affect on humans can be through inhalation, ingestion and skin contact (trans dermal). Soil leaching allows them to enter ground water, able to emit dangerous vapours and as such burial of contaminated soil is rarely a satisfactory solution to this problem. The South Australian Health Department has recommended a maximum safe level for PCBs in soils at 10mg/Kg soil while in most overseas country the level is between zero and 2mg/Kg. The Moreton Bay Council has refused to answer questions relating to this contamination, or indicate the cost to make this site safe for future high density University/ residential / sporting use.

Chairman of Your Community First, Colin Hewett asked, “Why has council concealed this important information from the public? Future students and particularly the workers involved in the construction of this project are entitled to know the risks involved when exposed to such high levels of potentially deadly contaminants. Did the council inform their new University partners or the Federal Ministers during Mayor Sutherland's recent Canberra jaunt seeking funding for his University?” Mr Hewett went on to say, “Although a tertiary learning centre is most desirable in a growing area such as the Moreton region, this site is proven to be contaminated and flood prone, with significant sections subject to other planning and environmental restrictions. The Koala habitat being just one of many important considerations that appears to have been ignored so far.” Council candidate for Division 7, Chris Kelly, tried

Enquiries: Jill McGilp Ph:3408 2894 or Mob: 0409 444 764 to gain information under ‘Right to Information’ which was denied with the excuse that it was Commercial in Confidence. It is time for the council to come clean on all aspects pertaining to the proposed University on contamination, all costs (clean up and development), plus expected financial returns to council. For the Mayor to have claimed the original purchase monies of over $50million “did not cost the ratepayers a cent” is misleading. Developers do not simply contribute to council coffers without passing on their costs to ratepayers (with profits factored in). Your Community First councillors will demand integrity, openness and to stop all the secrecy surrounding not only this development but so many others throughout the Moreton region.

Calls for Canal Local Lace Levy to be Canned Monitors Fight for Bribie Island residents have called Campsite on Councillor Brooke Savige to scrap the current canal levy following years of maintenance neglect. “It was brought in in about 2012 but was lowered again a couple of years later,” said Judy Miller - resident of 11 years. “Since that time I’ve maybe seen the council down here once or twice.” “There’s problems all over the place.” There are two major canal developments on Bribie – the Bribie Gardens Canal Development and the Pacific Harbour Canal Development. Previous councillor for the region Gary Parsons said “there is a lot of maintenance that needs to be done”. Councillor for Division One Brooke Savige said a review of the rate structure within the Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) is one of her key priorities. “The maintenance of MBRC’s assets, liabilities and responsibilities should not be the financial burden of canal residents,” Cr Savige said. Bribie Island Local Colleen Ogilvie said the levies should be fair throughout or not at all. “The canals are a public waterway for all to use, so if they keep the levy. They should treat houses on parks the same, be levied,” Ms Ogilvie said. “The parks are a public amenity for all to use and the levy would go towards the maintenance of that park plus the park makes their property more attractive or worth more, just like the canals. “Either levy canal and park properties or scrap it.” Cr Savige said locals can expect a response to the rate structure review very soon. “This process can be lengthy but it is a key priority for residents and I will be working hard to ensure this review is done in a timely manner,” she said.

An epic fight between two local Lace Monitors has gone viral after one of Queensland’s leading snake catchers shared the impressive video to his Facebook page. Richie Gilbert from Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7 wrote last week that the battle was “awesome”. “I’ve spent my whole life observing reptiles in the wild and this was the first time and probably the only time I’ll ever get to see this epic behaviour,” he wrote. “There was about 6 Lace Monitors cruising around us while this was going on.” “I got front row seats to these big boys battling it out for the right to scavenge at our campsite over on Bribie Island about a month ago.” Mr Gilbert said that his brother Steve Gilbert took the video on his iPhone. “And I’m so stoked he did,” he wrote. The video shows two male monitors reared up on their back legs, using their tails for balance and embracing. The two males scratch in the soft sand and swing their heads about. At moments they even appear to be kissing but that is definitely not the case. They’re so close to Mr Gilbert’s campsite they actually tumble on to the tarp at one point. Other monitors roam the borders and scurry in the bushes. But the fight is over very quickly, one male takes a bite and the other is quick to run off into hiding leaving the winner looking very proud. To see the amazing video head over to Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7’s Facebook page either through searching personally or following this link: https://m.facebook.com/ SunshineCoastSnakeCatchers/

TODAY'S RANT! Good Morning Islanders ...

What is the opposite of "Love Is In The Air?" It seems that Love and compassion are "missing in action”. I like to stay in touch with what is going on in my community, yet I am astounded by what I see! I read a social media article in our local community page where people were complaining how a serious car accident affected THEM! ...How they might be late, or have to sit in traffic. They also complained about the road! It's not the road that isn't safe, it's PEOPLE! People who want to get there first, people who want to sit on your bumper bar while you do the speed limit, people who cut in instead of being patient! .... I think from memory I saw only two comments in this article regarding the welfare of the people involved! Speaking of roads, on one hand where there is an accident, people are complaining how the road needs altering, or widening, and on the other hand, they are complaining about current local road works involving widening elsewhere. Why? You guessed it! They may be delayed, or have to leave earlier, or have to sit in traffic! What an oxymoron! (Without the 'oxy') Car accidents are traumatic! They leave more than physical scars on a human being! I have counselled MANY victims of car accidents with chronic P.T.S.D (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) symptoms YEARS after the fact! Add to that the physical injuries, the financial difficulties (being unable to work, being without a

car while waiting for insurance etc), and the trauma for their families! Since when is YOUR inconvenience more important than another human being's health and welfare ! What if it were YOUR family involved??? YOUR child? YOUR partner? YOUR sibling? Or YOU! We need to be responsible as a community to care for others. We need to be responsible for our own individual levels of compassion and empathy! I said EMPATHY... not apathy! It's a sad state of affairs when a human being is killed or injured, and your major concern is being late for wherever you are going......but remember this! Where you are going may not be where you expect! The Universe is 'like that!' When people fly past me illegally, or push in rather than merging, or overtake when it is unsafe for everyone around them, or sit on my bumper bar, impatient, because I am the 'idiot' who does the speed limit ......I have a saying for YOU! "The only place you're going to get to faster than I is the next world!" Rant over! ....Stay safe and be compassionate! SS Cormorant – Protecting Bribie Island in Short

Series One – Introducing ‘The Wreck’

SS Cormorant – Protecting Bribie Island from ca1958 – 1990 edition two is written by Warwick Outram with the research done by Ron Powell. It is based on the history of the SS Cormorant or as most locals know it ‘The Wreck’. Outram writes that “this ship was a landmark at Bongaree for over thirty years from ca 1958, until November 1990, when its rusting hulk was broken up, removed from the beach and taken to the local dump”. It was common for locals to climb over the wreck, fish from it and to swim or play on the sand around it. Due to this the hulk had become a safety risk to children and the general public and thus it was removed. More than 25 years later and people still ask about ‘The Wreck’. So together Powell and Outram set out to obtain information and transpose it into the book SS Cormorant – Protecting Bribie Island from ca1958 – 1990. Ron Powell works as a volunteer guide at the Bribie Museum while Warwick Outram has written over 40 books about Bribie Island’s history. Over the next few months The Bribie Islander will break up the research and information set out by Outram and Powell into a series of articles. To find out the intriguing history of Bribie Island’s SS Cormorant make sure you pick up your next issue of The Bribie Islander. June will cover topics such as the SS Cormorant’s Voyage to Australia, Building Training Walls and Bishop Island as well as the Pilot Boat Capsize to name a few. The Bribie Islander has obtained all information and pictures from Ron Powell and Warwick Outram’s book SS Cormorant – Protecting Bribie Island from ca1958 – 1990 and pays all credit forward to their dedication on the subject.

Bye Bye Beard Local man John Shilton had been growing his beard for the past two years and said it was “very much” a part of who he was. “So much so that my Instagram name is @john_ plus_beard,” he said. “And anytime there is any type of beard story, picture or memo going around Facebook, I am invariably tagged in it by multiple friends.” For the past John's last moments with his treasured beard year Mr Shilton has received a number of comments encouraging him to shave his beard but said he never really wanted to. “But a workmate suggested that I should shave it off to raise money,” he said. “That caught my interest.” Mr Shilton pondered on the idea and when he saw an advertisement for the World’s Greatest Shave he said he was “sold”. The Leukaemia Foundation's World’s Greatest Shave is to raise money for research into finding a cure Half and half! for Leukaemia and blood cancers, and to support people

Johns one of the many locals that have helped raise money for World's Greatest Shave this year

John surely looks different without all that hair! suffering from Leukaemia and blood cancers. “Although I haven't personally been affected by Leukaemia, I've had a number of close family members who have had surgery to treat or remove different cancers,” he said. “I set up my account and started a team through my work. “I set myself a target of $2000 to shave my beard and a further $500 to shave my head as well. As of March 6th I was at $2945 with some collection boxes yet to be counted, so I was confident that I would pass $3000.” The beard and hair are definitely gone. Mr Shilton said a lot of people were looking forward to seeing him without the beard but says his daughter is upset that his hair won’t grow back!

Tortoise Beetles

Green Tortoise Beetle

(Cassida compuncta) I found this colourful little creature floating, still alive in my swimming pool. After some research I discovered it was a Green Tortoise Beetle who are a common leaf beetle and found throughout Australia. They are 4mm in length and very colourful with a green body and gold patterns on a dark background on the wings. These colours fade after death. There appears to be a shield covering the whole body area even the head. The only parts not protected are the antennae. When threatened the adults and larvae disgorge a smelly substance to discourage a predator. Their host plant is the Ipomoea (Mile a Minute) vine. About 250 pale green eggs are laid on the leaves. Both the larvae and the adult beetle feed on the foliage. Young larvae scrape the surface and leave a translucent mesh while the older larvae and adults eat holes in the leaves. The total life cycle is from 15 41 days while the adult lives from 2-29 days. Green Tortoise Beetles are mostly active during the summer months.

Orange Tortoise Beetle

(Aspidimorpha westwoodi) The Orange Tortoise beetle photographed above was also found floating in my swimming pool. Orange Tortoise Beetles are Leaf Beetles and 6 mm in length. They are not common. Leaf Beetles and their larvae live dangerous lives while exposed on the leaves which are their food. Tortoise Beetle larvae are quite amazing in that, as they shed each skin they attach it to the back of their bodies till there is a tail of four skins. This tail is used as a protection. If threatened they whip the brown tail over their bodies as a form of camouflage. They are seldom considered to be a serious pest.

Key Dates in the History of Bribie Island

EXERCISE SAND DOWN

Barry Clark- Bribie Island Historical Society

A few significant events spanning almost 250 years of Bribie Island history. 1770 Captain Cook aboard "Endeavour" first sights and names the distant "Glasshouses." 1799 Mathew Flinders and Bongaree exploring aboard the sloop "Norfolk", land on Bribie after an incident with natives at "Skirmish Point" ,carry out repairs at Whitepatch, investigate the Pumicestone river and climb Beerburrum Mountain. 1823 Three castaway Sydney convicts (Pamphlet, Parsons and Finnegan) land on Moreton Island, walk around the Bay, cross a big river, and spend many months living with the natives of Bribie Island. 1823 John Oxley seeking a suitable site for a new penal colony, sails to Bribie Island and finds Pamphlet and Finnegan, and is shown the mouth of the Brisbane river. 1824 Oxley aboard "Amity" lands 29 convicts from Sydney at Redcliff, then captures Parsons from Bribie Island. After just 3 months the new Penal settlement is relocated up the Brisbane river. 1839 Andrew Petrie is Superintendant at Penal Colony when Convict transportation to Brisbane is ended, and the first pioneer settlers move into the area. 1859 A new State of Queensland is established by separation from NSW and forming its own Government. 1867 Caboolture is settled on the road from Brisbane to the Gympie Gold fields, and pioneer settlers buy land along Pumicestone Passage. Aboriginal tribes are dispersed. 1887 Aboriginal reserve established at Whitepatch for displaced individuals, but closed within two years. 1890 Early pioneer settlers establish a Fish factory, Cattle grazing, Honey Bees and Oyster dredging operations on Bribie Island. 1901 Commonwealth of Australia began with the establishment of Federation. 1903 The Brisbane Tug & Steamship Co. started running boat trips from Brisbane, and developing tourism interests on Bribie Island. 1912 The company’s ship S.S.Koopa began regular trips to Bribie carrying some 1200 passengers to the newly built Jetty at Bongaree . 1918 Hall & Bestmann open first Store on Bribie to cater for the many campers, and the company built the "Twelve Apostles " holiday huts on the

foreshore. 1919 The first car brought to the Island by Hall & Bestmann took two days to drive on dirt tracks from Brisbane to Godwin Beach, and then floated over to Bribie Island. 1924 The first State School was built on Bribie Island, and a road constructed from Bongaree to Woorim to transport tourists by buses to the ocean beach. 1930’s Bribie Island Bowls Club and Woorim Surf Club were established for the few residents and thousands of tourists who came to camp, fish and holiday on the island. 1938 At the end of the "Depression" years, and before WW2, Thomas Welsby published his book "Bribie the Basket Maker" and the legend of Bribie was born. 1939 Bribie Island Hotel was built at Woorim by John Goodwin, just as World War 2 started, and all but essential services people were evacuated from the Island. The Hotel was taken over by the military and the Hotel licence was temporarily relocated to Bongaree. 1941 Fort Bribie and Fort Skirmish were constructed as part of the Brisbane Line defences, and thousands of US and Australian troops were stationed and trained at Toorbul Point and Bribie Island. 1947 Life returns to normal after the War and new settlers build homes and start businesses on Bribie, and the first car ferry service operates from Toorbul point. 1953 Electricity is connected to Bribie, new shops open and a Cinema operates in a Church hall. International artist Ian Fairweather comes to live on Bribie as a recluse in a grass hut, at age 60. 1963 The Bribie Island Bridge was opened, with an unexpected and controversial $1 toll, which impacted development until it was removed in 1975. 1967 There was a proposal for Bribie Island ,with less than 1000 residents, to become its own Shire, independent of Caboolture. 1977 Koolamara Resort was built at Woorim, Solander Lakes development commenced at Banksia Beach, and proposals were made for a Racetrack and Airstrip to be built on Bribie. 1989 Bribie Island National Park was declared.

This exercise was designed to test the response times and interoperability of multiple agencies and individual agency capability including communications utilising the recently introduced Government Wireless Network (GWN) and other networks, during the emergency response to a major incident on Moreton Island. The scenario was that a fixed wing aircraft had crashed on approach to Cowan Cowan airstrip, the crash ignited a bushfire and there are several deceased and casualties from the crash, a young child also goes missing from the nearby camp site amongst the confusion. Participating Agencies: Queensland Police Service, including Water Police & Polair, Rural Fire Service Queensland Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Queensland Ambulance Service, Brisbane City Council, State Emergency Service, Brisbane & Moreton Island, Qld Parks and Wildlife Service Tangalooma Resort, VMR Bribie Island, Coastguard Redcliffe VMR Bribie Island was tasked with delivering

7 Qld Fire & Emergency Services officers and all their equipment (500kg) to the “crash site”, in a heavy swell of 1-2m seas. QFES has advised VMR’s Graham Gibb of “an outstanding result”, which from time of call to fully kitted QFES on the beach taking only 45 minutes. So impressed with VMR’s capabilities to deliver, QFES intend to upgrade their operational orders to further utilise VMR Bribie Island. QFES are also planning to have an exercise conducted on Moreton in terms of a structural fire for which our assets will be utilised to assist in delivering and evacuation of QFES resources.

BRIBIE U3A MANAGEMENT TEAM Following the recent opening of new facilities for Bribie Island U3A the future looks even brighter. University of the Third Age is an International movement which started 44 years ago in France and now operates in 35 countries worldwide.

Without any State or Federal funding for any U3A, the growth in Queensland has been significant in recent years. There are now 32 U3A's in Queensland, attended by more than 21,000 senior student members. Bribie Island U3A rates amongst the

enrolments expected. At the AGM President Ann Brooks announced her retirement, after 12 years and two terms as President. After presenting her report for the year, summarising the range of more than 100 new and existing classes, insight workshops , theatre and art presentations and numeous social events and outings, Ann Brooks thanked the contribution made by the Receptionists,Tutors and Committee members without those volunteer services U3A would not be the success it is. Special mention was made of three retiring Tutors, Jess Keffer, Val Ingham and Andre Peitro, the latter being appointed a "Life Member" for her 20 years as a Tutor of French at U3A. Three long serving Committee members were also thanked for their remarkable commitment and service. Standing down as Functions Co-ordinator Ailsa Gaffey was replaced by Angela Boodle, Jan Seggar as a Programme Co-ordinator by Pam Vogler, and Lesley Games role as Secretary will be taken over by Joan Hammersley. Former vice-President Greg Sibthorpe was elected as President, to lead the

experienced committee of 13, with 10 continuing in their previous roles. Ann Brooks joins Margaret Spooner as one of two Vice Presidents, Roger Platt continues as Treasurer with Assistant Shona Shergold, Programme Coordinators Chris Clark and Heather Hughes will be joined by Pam Vogler. Facilities Coordination continues under Barrie Boodle and Reception Co-ordination managed by Judy Davis. Barry Clark remains in the role of Public Relations and Publicity. Newly elected President Greg Sibthorpe recognised the valued community service offered by U3A and looks forward to expanding the range of interesting and challenging learning opportunities, as more Tutors are identified with business and social experiences to share with others. Recognising her significant contribution over many years, President Greg Sibthorpe presented Ann Brooks with flowers and gifts and a framed Certificate naming her as the very first "Patron" of Bribie Island U3A.

Ann Brooks named Patron by new President Greg Sibthorpe. There are almost 1000 individual U3A's operating in the UK alone. U3A started up in Australia 32 years ago in 1984 in Melbourne, and spread rapidly throughout all states of Australia and New Zealand. There are now 259 U3A's throughout Australia with 89,500 students with the very effective theme of "Learning for Pleasure" all done by volunteers.

If you are the business owner you also have a “personal” liability if your business is deemed to be in the wrong, this can be “as well as” the business identity. Liability and can be up to $600,000 personally (depending on the findings) When there is an incident which is found to be a breach of the WHS Act it is heard in front of a Magistrates Court and your business dealings become public listed knowledge. If you have a business that relies on tenders, your ratings drop severely if you are found to be in breach of the WHS Act. No documentation means that you cannot “prove” you have processes in place to protect your business, again doors to businesses have closed because they are found not to have this basic requirements. Because you have directors insurance do not feel relaxed that they will cover you if you are found to have contributed to “negligence” or “be reckless” when there is an injury or incident. Companies have had to close their doors because they thought “I will be OK, it will not happen to us”, or we are only a small company, Size does not worry the judicial system. As well as the regulators (Inspectors) there are then the “No Win No Fee” lawyers that take on the workers case, this is when the Common Law process begins and the dollars start to mount up! Do you manufacture or design? You have a liability as well which can be deemed to be breached if an incident occurs. When you get a tradesman into your home, you are bringing them into their “workplace”, so what have you in place to protect yourself. They can sue you for trips and falls if they are injured. What does Fair Work disputes cost? Ever had one? A new employee cost is now estimated at $50,000 from advertising, hiring, training and settling in period. Events and not for profits are not exempt. The board members can be held liable in some circumstances, and have been in well documented cases.

Letters H A to the YOUVE Editor SAY!!R thebribieislander@gmail.com Apology. Dear readers, With regard to a letter to the editor (Issue 20, page 12, column 2) I personally want to apologise to anyone who felt this innapropriate or offensive, I am sorry that this letter was printed. I have built this community paper as a ‘feel good’ newspaper and intend to keep it that way, but now and again something slips through the net. By mistake the letter also had no attribution, it was from William O’Brien J.P.(Qual), Bellara. Yours sincerely, Richard Whetlor. Editor -------------------------------------------------------------

Hello, Just finished reading the March issue of the Bribie Islander and congratulate you on another interesting publication. I read the ‘Islander’ from cover to cover and, whilst not particularly interested in ducks or spiders, found Marj Webber’s articles absolutely fascinating. The Burdekin duck and Golden Orb Weaver spider stories were well written, informative and delightful. Well done Marj! I always pick up my copy of the Bribie Islander from my local butcher, Woorim Meats (best butcher on Bribie...!) and wish the editorial and administrative team continued success. Cheers from Carol Gillam, Woorim. ---------------------------------------------------Dear Sir, I was appalled to see that you published – unsigned – a nasty, hate-filled letter in your 20 March edition. The writer starts by tenuously linking the theft of his near-neighbour’s flag to the actions of two “dark-skinned, black-haired” males. This is code for – what? Arabs? Aboriginal? He describes them as acting “surreptitiously” (he probably meant “suspiciously”). He suggests a drug deal takes place with a third “similar-looking” male, before describing a Muslim prayer ritual. The writer claims that Australia Day is some sort of sacred day for Christian Australians. It’s not – it’s a secular holiday to mark the beginning of European settlement. But he seems to believe that Muslims practising their religion on the day is somehow a slap in the face for non-Muslim, non-dark-skinned Australians. So he runs out to “get an ally and deal with them”. What was he going to do – physically attack them? Harass them while they are going about their completely lawful business? So they left before he got there with his mates – does he think he’s a hero defeating hordes of barbarians? More likely they had just finished their prayers. In summary, this dill implies that a group of flagstealing (or maybe not), drug-dealing (or maybe not), dark-skinned men deliberately set out to spoil his day and personally insult him by flagrantly Being Muslim In A Public Place, and that he singlehandedly (or maybe with a friend) drove them off. What a hero… not. This person sounds like an ignorant bully and thug, and his claim to be a Christian is contradicted by his words and actions. I’m disappointed that your paper allowed this bile through without attribution. Regards, Tony Longland, Bellara. --------------------------------------------------I wish to express my anger and dismay that the lack of traffic management of the traffic exiting Bribie Island on the afternoon of the 6th March 2016 . On the Island side of the Single Lane Bridge there was NO traffic control ( No Police, No Council Traffic Managers. No security personnel ). It took my wife and I one hour and fifteen minutes (1.25 Hrs) to get from Woolworths Bongaree to across the bridge. If Sandstone point Hotel want to have functions like this, then they MUST work with Regional Council, Police, own security traffic personnel to allow the unimpeded traffic flow to the ONLY EXIT FROM THE ISLAND. Somebody has to take responsibility for the general public. Remember --- Not everyone was going to the Concert. Robert Craigie Banksia Beach ---------------------------------------------------

REF: TO THE ATTENTION OF THE EDITOR Dear Sir, My name is Marivi Alvarez; I am a local resident of many years. I have been asked by the Queensland Cancer Council Research to host this year’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, which together with my organising committee, we are at an advance point towards a delivery of a ABMT with a difference... This being the kind of event which relies entirely on the generosity of local business and private people, as well as the endless hours of free time the organising committee is putting into this event, we feel that it is a community event for which, we would like to reach as many people as we can. We need publicity in order to reach the Bribie Locals. Can you help us? Thanking you in advance for any support in getting our project known locally. Yours Sincerely Marivi Alvarez, Ningi. ---------------------------------------------------For the most part I look forward to receiving the Bribie Islander. But I was flabbergasted when I read the letter from an unnamed contributor in relation to his Australia day experience. I am not a believer in political correctness by any stretch of the imagination and by the way have had a Christian upbringing but there are sooooo many things wrong with this point of view and his actions I almost don’t know where to start. To begin, Australia day is NOT a religious holiday, and even if it was, every Australian has the right to practice their religion whenever and wherever they wish provided it is doing no harm to others. Would this contributor be rushing to “deal with” a group of Hare Krishna followers if they started chanting in the park, or Buddhist monks meditating or for that matter a group of white AngloSaxon Australian atheists having a bbq. Secondly, to insinuate that Australia day belongs solely to Christian Australians is an insult to the almost 5 million Australians who, at the latest census (2011), stated they had no religion. That is not including all the other non-Christian religions (approx. 1.3 million). Are they not allowed to celebrate their country’s special day? And perhaps worst of all, this contributor believes that peacefully worshipping your chosen God is a bigger crime that the scourge of drug abuse that is contaminating our country. Give me a break!!!!! Mark Hooper Bribie Island ---------------------------------------------------Dear Editor, Below is a media statement issued by the Queensland Local Government Reform Alliance. The Alliance represents many ratepayers and community groups throughout Queensland, including those from Redcliffe and Caboolture. The Alliance is supporting Rob Pyne, Labor MP for Cairns, who has been exposing the bad practises in Queensland local government and has been calling for a high level public enquiry into these matters. Regrettably he is not receiving full support from his government colleagues, so our local MPs could be asked for their position. Most ratepayers of Moreton Bay will recognise the symptoms right here in our own back yard, but be assured, the problems are much more widespread than just here. It would be appreciated if this matter could be aired while attention is focussed on the local government elections “The Powerful Mayor Syndrome” is seriously hampering good governance throughout Queensland. Cairns Labor MP, and one time councillor Rob Pyne, is calling for an Independent Inquiry into local government corruption in Queensland. In an unprecedented move Mr Pyne has tabled documents in Parliament alleging misconduct, corruption, breaches of the Local Government Act, bullying and harassment in some of Queensland’s Regional Councils. It unfortunately seems that none of the big councils are immune from such allegations. Mr. Pyne alleges the documents he has tabled clearly demonstrate: There is corruption in Queensland local Governments, particularly in big councils; Outsiders, particularly developers, are influencing councils; Declaration of Political donations isn’t working in Local Government; The complaints system in Local Government (internal and external) doesn’t work Bullying by Mayors and CEOs is rife Too much power is given to Mayors and CEOs – consequently, elected Councillors are now rubber stamps. An attempt to instigate an Independent Inquiry into the effectiveness, functionality & integrity of the large Regional Councils resulting from the forced mergers foisted onto the public by the ALP Government in

April 2016 - Issue 21

2008 has, to date, fallen on deaf ALP ears. Member groups of the Queensland Local Government Reform Alliance (QLGRA) have become deeply concerned about the state of Queensland’s Regional Councils, especially since the LNP failed to correct the problems during their term in government. The Governments amendments in 2012 to the Local Government Act inadvertently exacerbated the problems created by the 2008 amalgamations and resulted in what is now commonly known as the Powerful Mayor Syndrome. QLGRA expresses strong support for Rob Pyne’s calls for an inquiry and urges the government to right the wrongs committed in 2008 and 2012 respectively. This is a state wide issue that needs bipartisan action now. A local government review and reform is long overdue. Authorised by and further information from: Ken Park 8 Green Street BANKSIA BEACH 4507 Ph 34088648 ---------------------------------------------To whom it may concern, I would like to comment on the Sunfish Moreton Inc. advertisement in the current Bribie Islander as it seems that innuendo and misdirection are being used to promote their point of view. The comment that there are localized depletion’s of staple local fish is contradicted on the following page about rec fishing catches. How can they be caught “in greater and greater numbers” by Commercial Fishers if the numbers are diminishing? Commercially Fishing families who have traditionally fished these communal marine food resource areas for generations know how to safeguard fish for the future. Targeting by rec fishers of bream and flathead during their spawning runs is advocated openly by fishing magazines and as we know, by various national and international surveys, total recreational catches are far greater than the Commercial catch. A Commercial Fisherman’s job is to catch fish for those who cannot catch it for themselves and after the local area is serviced the rest goes to other markets as is done with most foods. Why is this portrayed as being a negative? Even though rec fishers already have access to far more of the community’s marine food resource areas than those whose job it is to provide the majority of us with wildcaught seafood, they continually push for more. It is illogical that those who provide seafood for everyone has less access to the community’s marine food resource areas than those who fish for themselves as a hobby (look at a Moreton Bay Marine Park map). Netting is a very selective and environmentally sustainable way of catching seafood for people and the loss of access to the community’s marine food resource areas to our Commercial Fishing families has had a negative effect on the availability of fresh local seafood and its price. The reason for this, and more imported seafood than Australian, is caused by what is being endorsed by Sunfish – less Commercial Fishers equals less local seafood and higher prices. As for the pictures, why is a pile of dumped fish being portrayed as being Commercial, it could have come from illegal netting or the fish kill at Beachmere Lake; the people fishing are in an ecologically damaged area where the natural beach and mangroves have been destroyed for a retaining wall (causing reduced fish numbers). What has a small child catching a whiting in the passage have to do with Commercial Fishermen catching mullet on the beach, two totally different species? Their message seems to be that because most of our Commercial Netters have already been forced out, those who are left to provide fish for the locals and tourists (who expect to eat locally caught seafood which is an important part of their cultural experience of traveling) should be forced out too. If rec fishers have their way they will be the only ones eating fresh local bream, whiting and flathead, and at great cost to the tax-payer too. As Australia has the third largest EEZ in the world and is 30th in production it says a lot about the priorities of government and those who oppose Commercial Marine Food Production. Vic Baker 4510 043112401 ---------------------------------------------------Editor It is beyond belief that you should have given column space to the ignorant ravings of some bigoted boofhead on the island in your Letters to the Editor in the last edition of your otherwise terrific paper. Even though the contribution was terribly edited and presented, its contents were so repellent that one has to wonder at the values held by your editorial staff to have even read it through and thought it OK. It is NOT OK to publish and encourage the juvenile racist garbage of some “adult” reader who no doubt thinks that there are others in the readership who will applaud his outburst. To assume criminality on the appearance of a

person is bad enough but to recognise that they are practising a religious ceremony and that they should be stopped because this idiot doesn’t think they should, is insufferable. To top it all, this fool believes that a religious observance was something of a slight to us on Australia Day!!!!! This needs to be retracted and apologised for. AND please publish some of the responses you will get to this to show that moron that Australia is indeed a place of tolerance, “fair go” and acceptance of all. Geoff Ginn Bongaree ------------------------------------------------Late Sunday evening 13 March (my 74th birthday by the way) I had cause to phone 000 medical emergency. The paramedics from Caboolture Hospital who arrived very quickly, drove me to hospital in this lovely ambulance and told the emergency staff I had really low blood pressure, an allergic reaction to codeine, as well as symptoms of sciatica. When I arrived under lights, emergency staff then detected a problem with my heart and I was rushed to Resuscitation (business class) where I had a lovely nurse all to myself and a big room, with multi coloured dials and mechanicals. Medical staff reckoned they would have to stop my heart and restart it – with those paddle things – and I had sticky things put on me all over the place, but looked after a treat. I wish they had had a television crew there. I could have been a star. The next day I was wheeled upstairs, again business class, and taken to the Critical Care Unit where I also had my very own nurse and a lovely bed that did everything at the touch of a button. I could even get comfortable! And the tea lady made the best cup of tea. I had a great lasagne for lunch and peaches and ice cream for dessert. I had no complaints. I was a bit disappointed when they told me I could go home. I really like business class at Caboolture. Seriously, I understand the ambulance paramedics, emergency staff and CCU have very difficult duties to perform. I applaud them all and thank them very much. Elizabeth Shepard, Ningi. --------------------------------------------------Dear Editor, I am a member of the Contemporary Art Practices group working out of the Bribie Island Community Art Centre. We will be the Artist/s of the Month for April at the centre and we will be exhibiting a series of drawings we have been working on for about 8 months. We have been creating drawings/paintings in response to a previous drawing created by another artist member. It is like a visual version of the old word game called “Chinese Whispers”. Each member artist was given a stimulus word to respond to but no one else got to see that word. All following drawings were created from the previous drawing only. The resulting 17 drawings in each set, demonstrate a range of skills in a variety of media and a sometimes tenuous link to the previous drawing. A psychiatrist would have

a field day ( there seem to be lots of snake, dragon and romance imagery). The exhibition which we have titled “Chinese Whispers” is on for the whole month of April and is free. The centre is open Tuesday to Sunday 10am - 4pm. I have sent 2 images from the over 250 drawings created during this time. All drawings will be at the exhibition inside the booklets showing the development of the ideas. I hope this is not too late for the April edition. Thanking you in advance

STOP STARING AT THE DITCH! The first thing I was told when I learnt to ride a motorcycle was “What you look at is where you will go, if you are riding along and see a ditch don’t stare at it and think Oh No A Ditch! Because that is exactly where you will end up – head first in a ditch”, this turned out to be very true but in my case it was head first into a bush in front of a McDonalds…. Not my finest hour but pretty amusing for those in McDonalds. Fitness and health is a lot like riding a motorbike. So many people spend a lot of time staring at what they currently can’t do rather than what they want to be able to do. Anyone can sit on a couch and say they can’t run, anyone can convince themselves that they will never be fit enough to do a single pushup or swim 100 meters, and honestly while they sit there saying there is nothing they can do, nothing is exactly what they will do because they are looking at the ditch not looking at the road and the amazing journey that is right in front of them. I was terrified when I first started riding the bike and I was feeling sick and embarrassed the first time I went into a gym because I had never done either before and I didn’t want to look “silly and too old and fat”. But now looking back I am still shocked at how far I have come on both fronts. When I weighed 120kgs if you told me I would stand on a bodybuilding stage in a bikini at 50 years old weighing 54kgs I would have laughed at you. At 120kgs and 40 years old I had never been to a gym and smoked and ate all the wrong foods and hated life. I could

never imagine being fit enough to lift 100kgs or jog and as for learning to ride a motorbike at nearly 50 – never! But here I am and I did it by looking forward and not looking at why I could not, how I could not, or what I had not done before. If you spend your life looking at the ditches in your life you will never see the amazing countryside alongside those ditches. You will miss the joy of walking along the edge of the ditch and experiencing the amazing life you can have filled with health and fitness that is right in front of you if you just stop looking at the reasons why you can’t. Stop looking at all the foods that you “will have to give up” and look at the amazing foods that you “Will Enjoy” and that will make you feel healthy, happy and young. Stop looking at your bad shoulders and realise that your legs are great for walking! So you knees are “bad” too? It is amazing what a difference even very gentle exercise on other body parts can make to your outlook and wellness. There really is always something you can do to improve your health and fitness but you won’t find what it is until you stop looking at what you can’t do. Later this year I will run my first half marathon, and for someone who has always said they would only run if there was a large bear chasing them this is a huge challenge and one that is going to require me to really keep my eyes on the highway and out of the “not a runner” ditch, but you only get one shot at this life and we should all spend it not looking at ditches.

April 2016 - Issue 21

We see transformation all around us, everyday and yet how often do you stop to really notice the WOW factor and how much do you believe you have the capacity to change? For example, it still seems unbelievable to me that I can hold a tiny seed in my hand and that it holds the potential to become something far greater, far removed from its’ humble beginnings and to share its’ abundant gifts with the world….perhaps it will become a tree that radiates beauty and fills hearts with awe and gratitude, has healing qualities, many uses for its’ leaves, seeds and wood, gives joy to those who climb it and rest in its’ shade, holds precious moisture and stability to the earth around it, provides shelter and nourishment for those creatures who live in it and of course creates the clean air we all breathe. It seems unbelievable, magical and yet we know it to be true, because we can see it and experience it. If a tiny seed can hold so much potential for transformation and so many hidden gifts to the world, then how much more so can we humans with our higher levels of consciousness and awareness? “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t you’re right” A seed doesn’t question its’ ability to sprout, a caterpillar doesn’t question its’ ability to metamorphose into a butterfly….so then who are we to question our inner magic? Do you want to TRANSFORM & START LIVING the life you want to live…free of pain, fear, anxiety, doubt or dullness? We can help and empower you to transform, as well as build the resilience to prevent future suffering and be radiant instead! CALL ME NOW to have a FREE phone

Busy Mum Recipes By Selina Whetlor

As busy mums trying to find something easy, healthy and quick is not so simple, but this coating for chicken or fish is a winner and can be used by all (why not add some fresh chillies?) not just busy mums! Ingredients : 3/4 cup coconut flour 2 tbsb mild curry powder 1 tbsb cumin powder salt and pepper optional 4 fish fillets Or 2 chicken breasts cut into pieces I have used this coating on whole fish fillets (hoki and basa are really good) and also small pieces of chicken which is good for the kids, put on to skewers too!

LET GO OF THE PAST...

Based on the work of Louise Hay A life changing program for anyone who wants to move on from the challenges of earlier life

In just 3 consultations, you will learn to: • Overcome limiting childhood beliefs • Forgive yourself and others

• Develop positive habits for daily life • Plan a powerful joyous future

Just mix all the ingredients together add fish or chicken and coat then pop in the fridge as long as you have before cooking. Once ready to cook spray frying pan with rice bran oil and cook for about 3 to 4 mins each side depending on size of portion If putting onto skewers spray meat with oil and grill for about 8 minuites under a medium grill turning every couple of minutes. I served chicken skewers with mountain wraps, salad and low fat greek yogurt with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Serve fish with steamed veggies and basmati rice. Enjoy!!

CHOC CHIP OAT COOKIES INGREDIENTS: 125g unsalted butter 1/3 cup brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract or essence 1 egg beaten 3/4 cup Uncle Toby’s Traditional Oats 1 cup plain flour 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 2/3 cup shredded coconut 1/3 cup dark choc chips METHOD: Line baking trays with baking paper and preheat oven to 180C (150C fan forced) Beat butter, sugar, egg and vanilla in a bowl until light and fluffy. Sift flour and bicarb on to butter mix. Fold in and then add oats, coconut and choc chips, mix until combined. Use roughly one tablespoon of mixture and roll into balls, keeping them all about the same size. Place onto a baking tray about an inch apart. Flatten gently by hand (a table spoon wrapped with baking paper also works well) and bake for 15 - 20 minutes (depending on how crunchy you like them). This recipe is great for feeding the hungry hordes after school and goes down great with a serving of fresh fruit! It’s so easy to make, even the kids can help out! So you Want to be Productive? By Nikita Chee

Dear fellow Bribiarians, I do hope you all had a wonderful Easter break doing the things you love with whom you love. Or perhaps spending such a holy time with oneself breathing in the Bribie-briny air and soaking up the sun. I love this time of year; the weather starts to cool down and freshen up; the grass gets a bit greener; our faces - still blushing from such a sun-kissed summer – welcome the delicate touch of Autumn breezes; the atmosphere holding a certain 'invigoration' in it. Aah yes, 'tis a season of hope and new life, in whatever way that may be special to you and whatever way you need it. Holidays are always such a good time to enjoy life in all its capacities. What's more, they always present a good time for reflection. Lately I have been thinking about how busy sometimes we get in life. Busy with work; busy with study; busy with hobbies and socialites. Which, by the way, are all wonderful things that should encompass our lifestyles, though I often question the quantity of time we fill-up with these things. I want to pose a question. Why do we work or study or 'do things' with our time? What is our purpose in such things? Why get busy? We definitely know it's not to get ourselves stressed and run-down. Nor become mindless robots who are just doing things to become part of a 'system'. Do we not work, study and become part of clubs and such to make for a life that gets increasingly more enjoyable? To look after and bless the people around us with fun and healthy things and have fun ourselves? I know that is my motivation! So productivity is good in this aspect. Productivity equates to produce, and

produce you can take part in with joy afterwards! I reckon that that's why folk who cook with food they have grown themselves must feel so rewarded afterwards. What a deeper way to experience food! I must say though, eating food you didn't have to work hard at all for is pretty good too... However that leaves me thinking, busyness and productivity are two very different things. I think I have the grumps against the word busy; a bias I don't feel bad about really. How many times do you ask someone, “How was your day?”, to which you get the more-often-than-not reply of, “Oh, busy...”, accompanied by widened and down-cast eyes and a small sigh with a tinge of, “You know what I mean”. And how many times do you reply with that word? I know I use it more than I'd like to. It's so mundane. How many of our days do we want to spend replying with, “Oh, busy”, when we could be saying something really cool like, “Magnificent!”. Or how about, and wait for it...“Oh really relaxing thanks.” *Chuckle*. Reflecting on our work/play life-balance and ensuring what we are doing is making us and the people around us live greater lives is so important. Otherwise what is the point of getting 'busy'. Are we working just to work, or studying just for the sake of studying, or are we using these things to catapult us to new ways of seeing and enjoying the life around us? If the latter, than let us stop more often to lap-up what we've worked hard for. Moreover, let us stop and lap-up the things we've worked hard for with the ones we are doing it for. They're our motivation. Much love, Nikita. April 2016 - Issue 21

DOG BITES - PART THREE By Yvonne Bishop

In this issue I’ll address body language. With some breeds it is hard to tell such as Old English Sheepdogs where they have a bob tail and you can’t see their face. Or dogs with tails that curl up over their backs. Tails are the most easiest and identifiable part of their body to understand the way they feel. Notice when you come home and greeted by your dog the tail is wagging fast from side to side and in some dogs it appears their whole back end is wagging as well. This means he is overjoyed to see you and it matters not to the dog if you’ve been gone all day or only 10 minutes. But what does it mean when he’s tail is wagging low and stiffly side to side? Generally it means he is scared of a situation or sees a threat coming. Some dogs will even greet their owners with this wag because in the past the owner came home and saw the dog for exampl destroyed something and punished the dog and so the dog has learnt that whenever the owner comes home he is likely to be punished

even if he hasn’t done anything wrong. So, this wag can actually be a form of appeasement. It also means do not allow children near that dog. Ears also tell a story. If a dog is happy and relaxed the ears will be in their natural position, but if the ears are pulled back, this can also mean he feels threatened and is fearful. Or some dogs make their ears stand erect and they stand tall this dog is likely to be showing his assertiveness and is highly aroused. Either way avoid this dog. Dogs use facial expression to convey a message. Some dogs can smile. Staffies have the ability to smile, which means the dog is happy. Expressions such as snarling with their lip curled up and baring the teeth is an indication you are likely to get bitten. In the next issue I will write about how children should behave around dogs. Happy training Yvonne

Great Dog Walks of Bribie and Surrounds (Part 3)

There are several lovely foreshore walks in surrounding regions such as Godwin Beach, Donnybrook (southern esplanade), Toorbul (northern end) and Beachmere (southern end) though these are all designated “on lead” dog walks. Genuine dog off-lead beaches are a rarity, though Beachmere has areas for on-leash and off-leash, and why not? There is just sooo much beach, especially at low tide you can walk your dog for miles out towards the receding waterline, but watch out for the horses! Yes, you heard right, it also has areas designated for horse riders wanting to go for a gallop on the soft sand, though this is towards the northern end of Beachmere. All sorts of pleasure horses and even race horses frequent Beachmere as well as Sandgate beach as it is idyllic for both horse and rider and the soft sand is low impact for tired hooves. White Patch on Bribie near Banksia Beach is hidden away between Banksia Beach and the national park, with a heavy contingent of local artists in residence. The beach walk here is special because of the full-on views of the Glasshouse Mountains. The beach is a mix of sand and mud with some amazing rockforms and wildlife. Sting rays can be seen in the shallows and you are likely to see dolphins and even dugongs due to the closeness to the national park and deeper parts of pumicestone passage. Toorbul and

Donnybrook are clearly visible across the passage, though not as close as they appear due to an optical illusion across water causing objects to appear much closer than they really are. The Toorbul boat ramp with all of it’s activity is easily seen. This part of the passage is shallow with lots of moving sand bars. Next issue see the article “Big cats and Little Cats”.

Did you know that there is a dual purpose to day respite services. Day Respite services are funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland State Governments to provide an opportunity for social engagement for individuals and a break from the role of carers. At Golden Age Day Respite we provide the opportunity for those who are otherwise unable to do so, the opportunity to get out of the house and participate in activities, concerts, outings and meet with others on a social level. As we are all social beings many studies have demonstrated the connection between staying well and healthy and the need human beings have for the company of others and stimulation from conversation and activity. The purpose of our service is to assist older people in our community to stay well, health and living independently for as long as they wish by providing the opportunity for social engagement. The other purpose of our service is to

provide those caring for a loved one with the opportunity for a break from this role. For carers to be effective and able to continue to provide assistance to a loved one, they need time out to take care of themselves. Carers need to be reassured that the people they put their trust in to provide care in their absence are up to the task. At Golden Age Day Respite Centre we have been assisting carers for over 25years. We have a team of trained staff and volunteers who are able to assist those entrusted in their care to have an enjoyable, relaxed day away from home. For a small fee we can provide transport, meals, activities and entertainment as well as staff trained to assist with the needs of the older person. The Centre is open Monday thru Thursday to provide care to those over 65years. If you would like to enquire about the content of this article or any aspect of our service please contact the Coordinator on 3408 2112.

Spotlight on Fruit & Veg By Wrights Fruit Barn

Continued heat and rain in the Victorian cropping regions has affected harvests of berries and green leafy vegetables, and although the best quality produce will cost more, there are ample fresh fruit and vegetables for your holiday table. The best buys are reasonably priced Asian vegetables, asparagus, cauliflower, capsicum, carrot, celery, eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms, and in the hard lines, onions, potatoes and sweet potatoes. With less quality Victorian supplies, expect to pay firm prices for beans, beetroot, brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, leeks, parsnips, snow peas, silverbeet, squash and sweet corn. Pumpkin is cheap. If your pumpkin is whole, it will store well at room temperature. If the pumpkin is cut, remove its seeds, wrap it in plastic and store in the refrigerator crisper. Lettuce and cucumbers are weather affected and have firmed in price, along with avocados that have been expensive to firmly priced for some weeks. Serving up a salad this Easter holidays is more cost effective with all categories of tomatoes, mixed salad leaf, eshallots and herbs plentiful, of quality and a reasonable price.

Your Zodiac Forecast from Jonathan Cainer April Monthly Forcast

Teletopia. Max call cost $1.32 per minute, including GST. Higher charges from mobiles/ payphones may apply. Customer care: 1300 366 702. Mars and Pluto both begin retrograde phases around the middle of April. That suggests a change of pace for many. We won’t all wake up one morning and realise it’s safe to turn over and go back to sleep but we may gradually start to develop a greater sense of trust in the universe. There’s not quite the need to rush and race as, perhaps, once there was. The right things are happening naturally and, even where the wrong things still seem to be occurring, we can slowly see how encouraging changes may yet happen all of their own accord! ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Do you feel, these days, as if you are running up an escalator that is heading down? Do you suspect that, no matter how fast you run or how hard you try, you won’t get where you need to be? Perhaps you should stop to consider whether it really is worth all that effort? Mars, your ruler, changes direction in April. That’s a strong suggestion of hard work paying off, although this won’t necessarily happen in quite the most obvious, direct way. You may just see a brand new solution - but you will greatly benefit from all that changes. I want to tell you why April has so many opportunities. Call 1900 959 005. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) We all like to feel as if we are a part of something. We need to know that we belong, that we fit in, that we know what’s expected of us and thus we also know what we have a right to expect in return. When events seem to strike at the foundation of such an understanding, we feel insecure. Yet when events support our sense of engagement, convincing us that we must be doing the right thing - we feel so much happier. In April, Venus will pass through the part of your chart that promises reassurance on all these fronts. I have inspiring news in your in-depth April forecast. Call 1900 959 005.

24

GEMINI (May 22 - June 22) Why do you do certain things in certain ways? What are these habits you have fallen into? Are you trapped by rhythms and routines? Do you wish you could alter them yet see no way in which that could ever happen? Before we go any further into your April forecast, I must be clear. I am not about to tell you some long-awaited change will happen instantly. Even so, I have good news. You are about to discover the real blessing that comes with commitment. You’ll see a real reward for sticking so dutifully to the familiar. Your in-depth forecast for the whole of April can really help. Call 1900 959 005. CANCER (June 23 - July 23) Cancerians are not shy, quiet and retiring. Or, at least, not when they have important causes to fight for, principles to defend or dearly beloved dependents to protect. You don’t always demonstrate the full extent of your inner power but the world would be foolish to imagine therefore that it doesn’t exist. Events in April help you to show your strength and to go beyond your usual boundaries. In rising to this challenge, you will be most successful and many will be inclined to thank you for a long time to come. April is a powerful month for you. Find out more. Call 1900 959 005. LEO (July 24 - August 23) Though the textbooks tell us you are supposed to be confident, assertive and strong, this is not an image of yourself that you always easily recognise. Often, you feel fragile, as if you would far prefer to be the beneficiary of someone else’s guidance than the leader who strolls out bravely to face the fray. If, in April, your inclination to retreat becomes more intense than ever, don’t assume there is anything wrong. You are intuitively biding your time, waiting for a moment of opportunity. When it arrives you will recognise it. You will then know just what to do to get it all right. In April, the power of the planets can change your life. Call 1900 959 005. VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) Cosmic climates are like weather fronts. Things can stay stable for a while, then suddenly, we find ourselves dealing with changed circumstances. Just

April 2016 - Issue 21

as we may need to dress differently when the Sun stops (or starts) shining, we may need to address our issues differently when celestial circumstances alter a situation. For some while lately, you have been dealing with adversity. You are now so familiar with the routine of self-protection, it has become second nature but in April things take a lasting turn for the better. April brings great potential for change. I’ll explain. Call 1900 959 005. LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) Some people believe the way to get ahead is to probe a situation until they find an apparent advantage, then push with all their might at the possibility this presents. Others turn themselves into a kind of bait by creating various psychological hooks, placing these on display and waiting until they get a ‘bite’. April brings you into a complicated situation that another person has created. You will have to follow their lead whilst doing your best to meet their need. This will turn out to be more beneficial han you expect. Four minutes on the phone can make April special. Call 1900 959 005. SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) Your presence is requested, your co-operation is required, your input is invited, your involvement is asked for. In what? By whom? Ah, well, if you don’t know already, you will do by the time April is over. Mars now changes direction in the part of your chart that governs ‘material stability’, and Pluto does much the same in an area of life to do with important personal interaction. So we find you responding to pressing requests and discovering, in the process, that you can do a great deal of good for others… and for yourself. Inspiring times await you in April. Call your NEW forecast: 1900 959 005. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December) Since Mars entered your sign last month, you have had great energy and determination to pursue a mission, yet it is proving difficult. To attain the success you desire, you will have to implement a strategy that allows more time to pass and a change to occur naturally. Aren’t you in too much of a rush for that? Shouldn’t you just do whatever will be more expedient? In April, Mars changes direction in your

sign, dramatically reducing the pressure you are under, facilitating a chance to get the right thing done. Be ready for the magic on offer to you in April. Call me: 1900 959 005. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Why do we have to strive for our goals while some folk can seemingly just snap their fingers and get whatever they seek? Quite possibly, they too, have had to work hard. It is just that this may not have been quite so obvious to you as an observer. Don’t underestimate the extent to which you have already invested in a process that must surely, eventually, succeed. Things may not happen as quickly as you want them to this month, but if you remain patient and persistent, all will move on well in the right direction. April brings a rare cosmic opportunity for change. Call 1900 959 005. AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) it is strange how sometimes, we can lead our lives, tackle our chores and take the ordinary in our stride when suddenly, we open our eyes, look at our situation and realise there is something about it we don’t recognise. ‘Wow!’ we say to ourselves. ‘How did I get here? How did that happen?’ Such moments of awakening are precious. They represent marker points along a journey of inner evolution being taken by our highest consciousness. Prepare, in April, for a revelation - followed by a delightful transformation! Don’t miss your inspiring in-depth forecast for April. Call 1900 959 005. PISCES (February 20 - March 20) People often tell us we can’t have everything we want. We must decide upon our priorities. We must let one thing go so that we can focus on another. It sounds sensible. It is usually true. Yet, once in a while, it really is possible to get the best of two worlds. You’ve been wrestling, for a while, with a difficult dilemma. In April, you start to see how the answer need not involve such a stark choice. With the application of ingenuity, a significant new possibility can be identified and successfully exploited this month. Your in-depth forecast for April is ready. Call 1900 959 005.

Living with a Physical Disability Living as a polio survivor is interesting. Having had polio as an infant I can consider myself as extremely lucky as I only had muscle wastage in the right leg from the knee down. Those less fortunate were confined to an iron lung, sometimes for life as seen below. However growing up in the 1950’s there were many challenges and obstacles that had to be faced. The first instance of discrimination that I faced was my first year at school. During this time if you had a physical disability you were also deemed to be intellectually impaired. Kindergarten did not auger well for me being taught by the nuns. My earliest memory of school is being stood in front of the class and told by a nun that I was a “stupid child and grass is green not red”. She also belted me down the back of the legs during the admonishment to reinforce the fact. The reason that I coloured the grass red and not green is that I am colourblind. A great start to an academic career. As an eight year old I was run over by a car and had a compound fracture to the left femur. Three months in hospital with many skin grafts, and six months in a full leg splint. This meant that when I finally fronted up to school I was now twice as stupid as I had a skinny right leg and the left leg in an ankle to thigh steel brace. “In Australia, many data collections define disability based on World Health Organization’s (WHO) international Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), which uses “disability” as an umbrella term for any or all of the following components: Impairments – problems in body function and structure; Activity limitations – difficulties in executing activities; and Participation restrictions – problems an individual may experience in involvement in life situations. It must be noted that Environmental factors influence the components above”.1 However when you examine the WHO website it now becomes the world of the Academic. “The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, known more commonly as

By John Boland

ICF, is a classification of health and health-related domains. As the functioning and disability of an individual occurs in a context, ICF also includes a list of environmental factors. ICF is the WHO framework for measuring health and disability at both individual and population levels. ICF was officially endorsed by all 191 WHO Member States in the Fifty-fourth World Health Assembly on 22 May 2001(resolution WHA 54.21) as the international standard to describe and measure health and disability”.2 Whilst I don’t disagree with the above three dot points there, needs to be clarification or expansion from a person with a disability point of view. With these papers, the biggest problem that I see is that a person who has a disability very rarely writes them. I’m going to concentrate solely on Polio and more specifically Post Polio Syndrome. The Polio Australia website states that, “Polio (poliomyelitis or infantile paralysis) is now a disease that has virtually been forgotten by our community and health professionals. Although vaccination programs beginning in the late 1950s have prevented new infections in Australia, polio survivors form the largest single physical disability group in the country”. In the mid 50’s I had the Salk Vaccination that was introduced in 1952 (even though I already had polio as it was mandatory) and in 1959 I again had to front mandatory Sabin Vaccination for polio. To all those “anti vaccination’ groups think of how many kids died or were permanently crippled by this highly contagious disease. Between the 1930’s and 1960’s there were 40,000 cases of poliomyelitis recorded in United States, but the total number of infections was more than likely 100 times greater. The rational behind this is that only 1 in 100 cases of poliomyelitis caused paralysis that required hospitalization and therefore mandatory reporting. The percentages in Australia probably follow this trend. Health professionals with first-hand experience of the disease have long since retired and there is a large gap in professionals who know much about it. There is an urgent need for the Australian Medical fraternity to re-acquaint

themselves with polio. Within the past few years I had the misfortune to require a medical and the doctor informed me that I did not have polio nor did I have post polio syndrome. He was somewhat taken aback when I informed that I was involved in one of the first trials in Australia on Post Polio Syndrome in the late 1980’s. This more than reinforces the need for the Australian Medical profession re-acquaint themselves with both the disease itself and more importantly post-polio syndrome. “Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is a condition that affects polio survivors years after recovery from an initial acute attack of the poliomyelitis virus. Most often, polio survivors start to experience gradual new weakening in muscles that were previously affected by the polio infection. The most common symptoms include slowly progressive muscle weakness, fatigue (both generalized and muscular), and a gradual decrease in the size of muscles (muscle atrophy). Pain from joint degeneration and increasing skeletal deformities such as scoliosis (curvature of the spine) is common and may precede the weakness and muscle atrophy. Some individuals experience only minor symptoms while others develop visible muscle weakness and atrophy. Post-polio syndrome is rarely life threatening, but the symptoms can significantly interfere with an individual’s ability to function independently. Respiratory muscle weakness, for instance, can result in trouble with proper breathing, affecting daytime functions and sleep. Weakness in swallowing muscles can result in aspiration of food and liquids into the lungs and lead to pneumonia3”. My experience with post polio syndrome is pretty much what is stated above, however in my opinion and I emphasize my opinion only is not to back off. Yes I get tired; yes I have had muscle fatigue; yes I have muscle atrophy to a degree in the right calf. As a kid I was often referred to as lucky leg, meaning I was lucky that it did not break and stab me in the bum. Whist researching this article it was interesting to not that there can be respiratory issue. If I try to sprint when riding I have a tendency to blow up very quickly. I had been reasonably fit in my younger years but had ballooned out to 120 kilograms. At 187 centimeters I could just get away with it, Some 5

years ago I took up working out in the gym and cycling in an endeavour to maintain a certain level of fitness as the big 60 was approaching. I had little difficulty in gaining endurance (aerobic fitness) but recently as I progressed in my riding to joining a strong cycling group I was some what taken back when I realized I had lost my ability to sprint. (My anaerobic capacity has declined dramatically. As a teenager I was a more than competent competitive swimmer and swam at Country and State. Anaerobic capacity is vital as a sprinter. Everything that I have read in relation to post polio syndrome more or less says listen to your body and rest when needed. In my opinion I believe that this is BS. Just as the brain has memory so does muscle. To increase knowledge you exercise the brain and therefore I felt that I had to exercise the body (leg) to halt or delay the muscle atrophy to the right calf I had to exercise. There was atrophy occurring again in the right calf and knowing that muscle has memory and cycling has become an essential part of my life. Walking is out and swimming tends to get a little boring following a black line for 25 meters and then doing it again, and again and ….I now even get cramps in what muscle I have in the lower right leg. It is a painful reminder that the cycling is rebuilding what muscle I had left in that leg. As in the case of being run over by a car and fracturing my rate femur (requiring many skin grafts) “many polio survivors were too young to remember the severity of their original illness and that accurate memory fades over time”.4 Medical opinion 5 is that “exercise should be reduced or discontinued if additional weakness, excessive fatigue, or unduly prolonged recovery time is noted by either the individual with postpolio syndrome or the professional monitoring the exercise”. I find this somewhat confusing as other articles state that the Australian Medical fraternity to re-acquaint themselves with polio. Most doctors and physicians I have met with know very little about polio or post polios syndrome, and the people who monitor the “program’ are generally fitness instructors (who by the way do a great job), but know nothing about whether polio or post polio-syndrome. I still cycle (over 5000 kilometers last year), weights at the gym and swim. It’s not the dog in the fight but the fight in the dog.

The Pedders Brakes, Steering and Suspension Check leaves nothing to chance. Carried out by expert technicians the check covers all essential under-car componentry including bushes and assembly parts. A comprehensive written report shows the current status of all-vital brake, suspension and steering systems. During the check, Pedders expert technicians will identify any immediate work required, plus advise on when additional servicing should be carried out in the future. Following the check, customers are given a step by step guide as to precisely what work should be carried out and which parts should be used to bring their vehicle back to peak performance and correct operating standards. This is a no obligation report, so you can decide what suits you best. A Brakes, Steering and Suspension Check is also recommended for: • Abnormal noises coming from front, rear and/ or underneath the vehicle • Vibrations or shudders especially from steering wheel or brake pedal • Diminished brake performance and takes longer to stop • Feels generally loose, “floaty”, and not right • Braking unevenly – ie pulling to one side under brakes • Brake pedal feels abnormally soft or hard • Uneven or excessive tyre wear • Excessive pulling to one side while driving • Steering wheel is off centre • Rough or harsh ride A Brakes, Steering and Suspension Check is also recommended for: • Vehicles that carry excessive loads which places extra strain on components • Pre-towing or holiday/road trip inspection • Vehicles that are due for a routine undercar inspection. Committed to Safer Motoring How important arE YoUr tYrES?

While it’s easy to overlook those four patches of rubber called your tyres, performing a few simple checks can yield better fuel economy and improved vehicle handling. since most tyre damage and wear is a result of driving on tyres that are improperly inflated. Maintaining proper tyre pressure is important for many reasons other than reducing the potential of a flat tyre or a blowout. in order to achieve optimum handling from your vehicle, from everyday driving to making emergency maneuvers, tyre pressure needs to be at the proper inflation level. even a tyre that doesn’t appear to be low on air can result in reduced vehicle handling and excessive tread wear. tyres that are not at the correct air pressure will also increase the rolling resistance (the friction that occurs

when an object rolls) of the vehicle. Under-inflated tires, for example, result in increased rolling resistance and therefore require more energy (or fuel) to move the vehicle, which negatively impacts fuel economy. according to american research, keeping tyres inflated properly improves fuel economy by approximately 3.3 percent. tyres that are over-inflated result in reduced levels of handling performance because less rubber is in contact with the road. improper inflation puts unnecessary stress on your tyres and can result in excessive or uneven wear. When this happens, it compromises the ability of the tyres to perform, and often results in premature tyre wear-and the necessity to replace them sooner than expected. Rotating, Balance and aligning of your tyres is a critical factor to tyre life. in some cases were service intervals are stretched as high as 15000 klm, this can result in halving your tyre life especially on the island of round abouts. inspecting your tyres periodically will result much longer tyre life thus saving lots of dollars Scott and Adam Bribie Car care 3408 4477

the driveway of our workshops. The Pedders Test Lane is used for quick and transparent periodic undercar inspections often as part of the Brakes, Steering and Suspension Check. By using this specialist piece of equipment we are able to check and report upon several key items of information under simulated driving conditions. Our trained specialist technicians will drive your vehicle onto the Pedders Test Lane which will systematically test your vehicle’s potential for tyre wear, weight, shock absorbers, suspension and brakes. As shock absorbers deteriorate over thousands of kilometres, it is often the case that a vehicle’s safety is gradually compromised via increased braking distances, unstable cornering and various stability concerns. Our trained specialist technicians will systematically inspect your vehicle’s entire steering, brakes, and suspension system and other related undercar components from front to rear. Your brake pads and rotors will be inspected and measured, removing wheel s as required. No Obligation Analysis and Written Report Pedders staff are trained to know how to accurately evaluate the results of the report. So should your vehicle require work to be carried out to ensure its safety and dependability, we will outline for you within a scale of urgency the options available to you, using only Pedders approved components. Red Hot Concert at The Sandstone Point Hotel

The Red Hot Summer Tour was touted to be one of the best concerts that Sandstone Point Hotel has ever hosted and we were not disappointed. I was lucky enough to be a photographer at the hotel amongst the biggest names in the Aussie Rock Industry and I can tell you it was mega! An estimated 5000 fans gathered to hear the likes of Jimmy Barnes, Noiseworks, The Badloves, The Angels and Mark Seymour & The Undertow. No-one needed an introduction from these music legends; all of them have a long standing history in the Aussie Rock scene with many of them founding their bands in the eighties. They certainly rocked the house! The smiles on the faces in the crowd were just beaming. Here were our idols, playing right on the banks of Pumicestone Passage, many of us had been admiring these muso’s for years and never in our wildest dreams did we think would be privilege to this. It was Awesome!! When it comes to venues, I don’t think there would be one with a better view out the back of the stage. It is a credit to the hotel to host such an amazing event, plenty of room for everyone and the food and beverage tents were kept busy throughout the day and night. Thanks goes to the Sandstone Point Hotel for bringing the biggest names in the business to us.

Our PSQ judge for the month was Gary Bradford who travelled from Nambour to judge our competition photos. The theme for the month was “Lines” and an interesting shot of the Melbourne Convention Centre by Gordon Bentzen was the winner. Marj Webber won the Mono Print and Open Colour categories with “Take Off” a Cattle Egret flying and “Clean Up” a Lucilia Fly attending to ablutions after a meal of pollen. Ron LeHuray with his beautiful “Blossom” took out the Open Colour Print. Kristie White won the Mono Projected Image section with a lovely image of a “Model” During the month several members attended the Bribie Island triathlon and practised their panning skills on the cyclists as they rode past. The idea was to have the cyclist in focus and the background blurred giving the illusion of speed. These photos were shown at the meeting while the author explained the procedure used to take the photo. After the meeting supper was served which gave us extra time for discussion with our visiting judge.

COMMERCIAL RESIDENTIAL INDUSTRIAL WWW.ELECTRINITY.COM.AU

Bribie Island Police were kept busy this month due to a number of burglary and stealing offences committed across the division. Burglary offences were reported at Melrose Avenue Bellara, Cypress Avenue Woorim and Avon Avenue Banksia Beach, together with stealing and stealing from vehicle offences at Bellara, Bongaree and Sandstone Point. Those matters are under investigation and any person who may have information which could assist are encouraged to contact the station or Crime Stoppers. During the month of March Bribie Island Police were kept busy executing search warrants across the Island for drug offences. There can be no doubt the use and supply of dangerous drugs is a serious issue for our community, and I encourage anyone with information that may lead to the detection and prosecution of drug offenders to ring the station or Crime Stoppers. You may always remain anonymous if you wish. With the Easter school holidays upon us, it is timely to remind all residents of the need to ensure their homes and vehicles are properly secured when unattended. The holiday period often results in an increase in stealing from vehicles and insecure residence offences. If your neighbours are away, please keep an eye out for any suspicious activity, and contact the station immediately if you suspect an offence is being committed. Leading up to and over the school holidays officers will perform increased traffic enforcement shifts across the Island, including with additional patrols on Main Beach by officers from the Road Policing Unit. Extra staff were bought into the area for the concert at the Sandstone Point Hotel. Officers from Landsborough Road Policing fined many drivers for speeding during their patrols, and will continue assisting local police with traffic enforcement in the area. A number of drink drivers were also apprehended, and activity on this issue will be increasing as we head towards the school holidays Police officers from Bribie Island received a number of complaints regarding scam activity on the Island, particularly scam emails. A number of residents received fake emails purporting to be from the Australian Federal Police. Similarly, some residents have also received ‘Phishing’ scam emails which encourage inputting of personal banking information or

Behind the Scenes at the Bargain Shed It is 8:30am and the Queensland heat blares down on the Bargain Shed creating what could easily be titled a ‘human hot box’. But the ladies still open the doors with a smile on their face and a chuckle in their belly. You’d think they must be getting paid alright to still be smiling like that, right? Wrong. They’re volunteers and all the money made at the Bargain Shed is donated to a series of charities. Located behind the Church of Christ on Foley St, Bongaree. The Bargain Shed is one of the lesserknown op-shops on Bribie Island. But the ladies still strive for quality by only shelfing the best of the best. Nothing stained, nothing torn and always priced within the budget. But “nothing is wasted it all finds a home somewhere,” says Faye. Loni is one of the more frequently seen faces. She took over management after Meryl left last month but has been pondering around the place for much longer. Loni says she volunteers because they need the help and it keeps her busy. Faye can be found behind the counters on Friday’s, usually serving customers or folding clothes. But come in around strawberry season and experience her mouth-watering home-made jam which is only sold from the Bargain Shed. Spending the past few Fridays with these ladies has given me a greater understanding of the hard work and perseverance behind a simple op-shop.

One of the inventions of our century was the good ol’ Kreepy Krauly. Before that, dads everywhere made their sons get out on a Saturday morning, hook up the hoses, pool pole and the manual vacuum cleaner and vac the pool for an hour before they were allowed to do anything else. While the automatic pool cleaner changed all that and gave us back the time we lost in vacuuming the pool, it did create a few little issues. In the next couple of articles, we’ll have a look at Pool Cleaning and the Automatic Pool Cleaner - Advantages & Disadvantages. The first line of defence in pool cleaning / water filtration is the SKIMMER. Let’s have a look at how the skimmer works on your pool. The skimmer box is designed to do exactly that - skim the pool water. The pool pump draws water from the pool via the skimmer box. The skimmer box is fitted with a “Weir Door” - that little door the flaps about in the water when the pump is not running. When the pump is running, the door recedes back into the skimmer box at just the right height to cause the water to be drawn over the weir door from the surface of the pool into the skimmer box. It then travels through the skimmer basket (the first point of filtration), through the pump and the pump basket (the second point of filtration) and then through the filter (the third and main point of filtration) and back to the pool. So the dirt, dust, leaves and other fine pieces of rubbish that land on the

pool surface are drawn into the skimmer box via the flow of water on the surface of the pool. If the skimmer box and weir door are impeded in performance, the system ceases to skim effectively. The rubbish that was being drawn off the surface into the skimmer box and filtered out as it goes through the filter system now either stays on the surface or has to drift down through the water until it lands on the floor of the pool, (where it will then be cleaned off the floor via the pool cleaner). The constant drifting of fine particles, leaves etc causes less water clarity in the pool as the contaminants drift and float through the water until they reach the bottom. Leaves and other organic matter also contaminate the water and breakdown in the water causing other related issues. So in essence, a pool that has good skimming will always be cleaner than a pool that has poor skimming. Unfortunately, the suction cleaner, to a certain extent effects the way the skimmer performs. Firstly, the cleaner takes a large portion of the suction away from the skimmer box to run the cleaner and suck from the floor of the pool. Secondly, the cleaner hose is pushed through the skimmer entry, usually impeding the correct workings of the weir door which then causes the water that is drawn into the skimmer to be drawn from under the surface rather than from the surface. These 2 issues combined, lessen the working capabilities of the skimmer, which then causes the contamination to have to drift through the pool to be cleaned out rather than drawn from off the surface directly into the filtration system. So while the suction cleaner has certainly improved to be a great tool, there are some issues caused by the suction cleaner. In the next article, we’ll look at different cleaners, their workings, advantages & disadvantages and different options. Until next month, (unless you pop into our shop) - Cheers, Russ Watson

FISHING BRIBIE

By Vin Donovan

Yet again another month has nearly gone by with fairly average weather patterns persisting up the east coast line, which in turn has made it nearly impossible to head outside. When the weather has allowed, there are still good numbers of pelagic species to be caught. As the water temperature starts to decline Spanish Mackerel and Wahoo should be pushing back up the east coast and it should be possible to target these specimens right through April, May, June. Dolphinfish, Marlin, Tuna and Cobia can be encountered throughout the transition periods between seasons. Trolling Tailor and Bonito are good options, Gar will be

Nice jewies caught inside the bay

the best bet for larger pelagic. Bigger swim baits should see bigger fish. Last season we were trolling 40 cm Tailor and Bonito and still getting 8-15 kg Spanish and Wahoo. So it goes to show smaller school size fish will attack big baits. If you can troll slow troll livies, this method will always produce more fish than any other. Skirts and skip Gar will work best for the Marlin. There has been some cracking Blues and Striped Marlin being caught out in the 100 – 400m marks east to north east of the Cape. 50 – 8-lb gear is a must when targeting this fish, some are going over the 200kg

month or so. Last season saw us get our bag limits most trips in under 10 casts of the net 15-30 prawns and is generally the size you can expect this area .

Top quality muddies taken well up the passage

mark. All local reef systems are holding a great variety of species at the moment such as Spangled, Grass, Red Trout, Sweetlip and Snapper. Mangrove jacks are still in numbers around Roberts, Brenan’s, Smiths, East Flinders and Hutchies Shallow tempest and Caloundra reed systems are also worth a good shot. Bait fish have been schooling up in the thousands throughout the passage and the bay. Also plenty of Spotties/ School Macks, drifting unweighted pillies from Buckley’s Hole to the bridge, will produce fish on the right tide. Also keep in mind where there are birds there are fish .The Queen fish and Trevally have been reasonably prolific this year, due to the lack of rainfall and also the massive amount of prawns in all passage creek systems. Bigger plastics, poppers and stick baits will work a treat on these passage brutes. Areas of fast tidal current or narrow passage ways of deep water is where I target them. Generally the further towards Caloundra you go the better. Flathead, Bream, Whiting, Cod, Grunter and Jacks getting caught in all the usual passage hunts. There’s been some beautiful big muddies being caught up the passage with little or no rain fallen. Camping up the passage and working your pots for a day or two should produce the goods. Good pro pots and fresh mullet will be the best bet. Sandies once again have been

plentiful throughout the Bay and pretty much getting taken anywhere along the passage and well into the Bay. Same as muddies good pro pots out for 24 hrs to 30 hrs. I find this always works better then checking the posts every 2-4 hrs. Crabs barely get a chance to smell and enter the pots before you have pulled the pot and drifted 100m metres or so to put it back down again. If you use good quality pots the crabs don’t get out. I use crab gear in 1- 12 mm 4 entry double chaff roped Aussie made pro pots. They are worth $70 each, but will defiantly out preform most other pots hands down. Clamped sinker weights on the bottom and double float system design shouldn’t see your pots drift in the super quick passage. Prawns are everywhere. Pine & Caboolture Rivers and all the passage creeks with Nudgee all producing bag limit catches every trip. These areas are where the big prawns hangout for a another

After fishing and boating in this beautiful part of the world for over 30 yrs, I’ve seen a lot of changes to the natural habitat and Morten Bay Marine Park ecosystem, habitat destruction, environmental pollution, pesticide pollution, and Brisbane population boomed. I believe this has had a catosphorphic effect on the water quality and gradually increasing the levels of harmful pollutants entering our waterways and throughout the whole of Moreton Bay region. With over 3 million people and a rapidly growing population calling Brisbane home, hundreds of industries and factories backing straight onto creeks and river systems, also the disgusting amount of plastic bottles and rubbish I’ve noticed throughout the whole area is quite saddening. What has the world come to! Greedy and money hungry people who rarely tell the truth about this saddening fact. This really happening!! What’s the next 30 years going to bring for our environment and waterways? I hope more people make this an issue rather than point fingers at few long-time local commercial fisherman and make out their the problem. Anyways have a safe and happy Easter holiday. Just remember don’t destroy what you come to enjoy! Tight lines, pots and nets.

bad and I don’t care’. He brushes it off. Bearfoot say they were completely clueless before the win and that it came as a shock. Impolite was inspired by Chapmans frustration with people. “I kind of got annoyed with society as a whole and so I wrote a funky tune that would still be received well but when you listen to the lyrics you kind of think about it a little bit more deeply,” he says. Fox says although it wasn’t planned, Impolite follows on from the same theme as the band’s first single Babylon. Chapman says while Asher Chapman, Rhys Fox and Sean Keenan from Bearfoot talk about their win the track can’t be named at the moment at the QLD Music Awards - Photo by Rob Bearfoot’s next single will again follow Sharkey that theme and fans can expect that along with some others in the coming Bearfoot has the kind of sound that months. Bribie’s Butterfly House to have a new home. By Deb Neill

I visited Bribie’s very own butterfly man Ray Archer this week and he told me his news about a new butterfly house to be erected near the AFL football field. Ray’s passion is all about butterflies and the joining together of people from all walks of life to make lasting friendships. You may already know of Ray and his quest to make Bribie Island a safe haven for butterflies and his plant stock that he readily gives away. Ray has a hydroponic garden and with the help of many volunteers, grows the plants that the butterflies eat. The new Laboratory (for breeding and harvesting the pupae) will sit beside the 240m2 butterfly enclosure and will be and an education centre for children and adults alike. Ray is hoping the butterflies will bring lots of visitors to Bribie. It will be a real tourist attraction he said. Ray has a vision of The Bribie Butterfly House being 100% run by volunteers and he says that 100% of profits will go to charity. He also has a plan to provide lasting friendships and a sense of purpose for his volunteer army and at the same time help the extreme poor of this world

via donations from profits. A security fence is ready to go into place at no cost; plans were drawn up no charge. The Bribie Potters have made some stunning pieces of artwork, donated to enhance the enclosure. Even the toilet seats have been donated so far, they are quite unique but I’ll let you check them out for yourselves. The new lab and enclosure will commence building within a few weeks; donations have already started to come in with various people and businesses giving their time, goods and services. It is expected to be completed around spring time this year. Soon there will be an honour roll listed on the website and if you would like to make a donation you can find all the information on the website bribieislandbutterflyhouse. blogspot.com.au or call Ray (President) 0409 491 419 or Peter (Secretary) 0490 094 814 We are always looking for volunteers and if you are available during construction or would like to help out in some way please contact the above.

MORETON ISLAND The Bribie Winelander

By Philip Arlidge

It is unfortunate that after many years of producing many fine wines from established grape varieties, the market place has seen fit to concentrate on new varieties that will probably see the demise of great varieties such as Semillon and Riesling. I think the success of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc in the Australian market place has seen the producers look for an alternative grape variety because we obviously cannot replicate the New Zealand style here. Shelf space occupied by Semillon and Riesling will give way to Vermentino and Pinot Gris/ Grigio which is a shame because in Australia we probably produce some of the best Rieslings and Semillons in the world, we have just given up trying to educate the public and shout the fact loud enough. Semillon arrived in Australia in the early 19th century and once was considered to be the most planted grape variety on the planet. It is reasonably easy to cultivate consistently producing six to eight tons of grapes per acre, it is fairly disease resistant, has a thick skin and can be grown almost everywhere and it ages in the bottle as well as most red wine grapes. It can be successfully blended with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle and can produce both crisp dry wines as well as classic sweet wines such as Sauternes. It is widely grown in Australia but especially in The Hunter Valley where for a long time it was known as “Hunter Valley Riesling” which was strange as the variety has no known association with Riesling, also in the sixties was labelled as Chablis, White Burgundies and Hock. When the wines are first released soon after vintage, as Semillon is never matured in oak, young Hunter Valley Semillons are almost always dry and crisp usually exhibiting citrus flavour of lemon/lemon grass, lime or green apple with mineral acidity. It freshens the palate

like few other white wines making a perfect wine for that casual glass on a warm day or with freshly sucked oysters, snapper or any fish with a citrus dressing and certainly chicken or pork. The wines however will develop in the bottle and to some degree often resemble aged Chardonnays. Obviously the wines need to be kept in perfect cellaring conditions with temperatures and humidity controls in place, but for those that have this facility, they will be rewarded with a wine that will exhibit a buttercup yellow colour and burnt toast, honey like aromas with excellent complex flavours and the acid level becomes soft. The wines will vary in price from around $15 to $65 depending on your budget and the age of the wine. Look for these labels and I am sure you will be converted to an Australian classic we need to support. - McWilliams Mt. Pleasant Lovedale - McWilliams Mt. Pleasant Elizabeth - McWilliams Mt’ Pleasant Blue Label - Tullochs, Draytons, Brokenwood - Pooles Rock, and of course Tyrells Vat 1. Often these labels are filled with medals awarded at the various shows around the country and depending on the turnover in the store it is possible to find a real bargain. For a dessert wine look for DeBortoli Botrytis Semillon and Mount Horrocks Cordon Cut. I often champion Riesling in these articles as I believe the wines of The Clare Valley, Eden Valley and Great Southern Region of Western Australia can match anything from New Zealand. Once the most widely grown grape in Australia, no wine grape variety has suffered at the hands of poor marketing and poor publicity as the humble Riesling. Packaged in cardboard boxes labelled Riesling wine companies sold a sweet style of wine that didn’t contain a Riesling grape! Serious wine drinkers turned away from the grape variety in search of a crisp wine style and found

Semillon/ Sauvignon Blancs from Margaret River named Classic Dry Whites and different styles of Chardonnay than more recently the Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand. Efforts in the nineties by wine marketers to rectify the situation were at the most, done half-heartedly, but many vineyards have persevered with the grape variety and again as in the case of Semillon. It is possible to buy a wine equal to any overseas grape variety and at a price that suits any budget. Riesling is another wine that can be enjoyed when it is a young vintage or look for some aged examples but be prepared for change in the style. Try a young wine from The Eden Valley such as Orlando St. Helga, Peter Lehman, Heggies and Grosset Polish Hill Riesling. From The Clare Valley Rieslings from producers like Pike, Kilikanoon, Pewsey Vale. Claymore, Skillogee, O’Leary Walker, Paulett and Grossett. Wines from The Great Southern may be harder to find in Queensland but keep an eye out for Plantaganet, Castelli, Galafrey and Ferngrove. Riesling can also come as a Dessert wine, look for anything with “late picked” on the label for that bit of sweetness. Wine writers will probably disagree with my comments on support for these two great grape varieties but unfortunately they only write for a small percentage of wine drinkers. The average guy/gal in the street who has no interest in wine reviews in newspapers and who probably doesn’t even know there are monthly magazines on wine, don’t even know what they are missing by sticking to their favourite Sauvy Blanc. Be brave and invest in an Australian Semillon or Riesling! It was sad to see the passing recently of Bob Oatley at the age of 87 who was probably best known by most for the yacht success of Wild Oats in The Sydney to Hobart Yacht race and the development of Hamilton Island. He started in the coffee industry before establishing Rosemount Estate and developing one of the most respected

brands in The Australian Wine Industry. He sold the brand for an incredible $1.4 billion and then watched as the brand almost died death overnight as has happened with most takeovers by larger companies. He returned to the wine industry 10 years ago establishing Robert Oatley Wines. Whatever happened to Kaiser Stuhl, Seaview and Seppelts, these have either disappeared from the shelves or are mere shells of their former selves, unfortunately we have to have takeovers, but are the public the losers at the end of the day? Cheers Philip Arlidge. Email: arlidge@bigpond.com.au In 1951 Kingsley Martin wrote in The Spectator. “It rained most of the week-end in Paris, but rain is less wet in France because the wine is cheaper. The temperature was not much above freezing point, but it is not as cold as in England because the wine is cheaper. The food is nicer, if more expensive, than is in England, but one is not ruined by the cost of a good meal, because the wine is cheaper. The cars are not more high-powered, nor the girls prettier but the traffic goes faster and the girls are more attractive because the wines are cheaper”! As could be expected of Ernest Hemingway: Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things that has been brought to the greatest perfection. It offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than possibly any other sensory thing that can be purchased. Have things changed over the last fifty years, I think not.
