Caboolture Front Line Toorbul Fire Services Boosted Boat Ramp to receive Floating Walkway Fire services will be boosted in the local area as part of the Government’s commitment to enhance frontline services across the State. Thirty-three new firefighters are set to join the ranks of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services including at Caboolture Fire Station following a ceremony at the Combined Emergency Services Academy at Lytton. “We have new firefighters boosting numbers right across the State,

Pumicestone Passage boaties will benefit from a new floating walkway at Toorbul. Main Roads, Road Safety and Ports Minister Mark Bailey said the $420,000 walkway at the Esplanade would be an asset in an area known for its fishing and boating. “This will be a much-welcomed facility, supporting the recreational fishing and boating the area is so popular for,” Mr Bailey said. “People come to this area specifically to enjoy beautiful Pumicestone Passage.” The walkway will allow faster and safer boat launching and retrieval on the Esplanade boat ramp near Freeman Road. It will also give sightseers another viewing platform to overlook the Pumicestone Passage. “Fishing and boating is a way of life here for locals, as well as an important attraction for tourists and a boost for the local economy,” a local spokesperson said. Mayo Marine Services started construction at the end of May, with work expected to be finished in July, weather permitting. Users of this ramp can expect some disruption during construction. • Newspapers & Magazines • Office Stationery • Greeting Cards • Fax & Photocopying Service • Dry Cleaning Service Open 7 Days Locally owned & operated Guaranteed Delivery Service!

Local Firefighters recognised with Special Awards Local Firefighters have received special awards for distinguished service and dedication to the people of Queensland. The Palaszczuk Government has awarded and presented 140 firefighters across Queensland with special awards. 48 National Service Medals, 24 Diligent and Ethical Service Medals and further 77 separate awards and certificates for the G20 Leaders Summit in Brisbane last year were recognised for these awards. “We thank all Firefighters for their years of dedicated service and hard work for their communities. Whether it’s turning out to a road traffic crash, entering a burning building or conducting building safety checks, the work of these Officers makes a difference every day.” A spokesperson said. The Bribie Islander would like to thank the all of the local Firefighter Officers in the area for their unwavering commitment.

ZOO FUN RUN

The Bribie Zoo run started early on Sat morning with people of all ages happily participating for a worthy cause.

Teagan Lather has a dream of opening a Wildlife Education Centre right here on Bribie, and what better way to raise the funds than have a Zoo Run and Gone Wild Festival. Teagan’s’ aim was to raise $100 thousand dollars for the cause. What a wonderful young lady we have in our midst. The Gone Wild Festival was held at Bribie Primary, lots of Crawly things to 1st place 5klm run Stephen O’connor.

Cornetts Invest $2m Palliative care bed keeps Into Bribie Store loved ones close

Cornetts has enjoyed great support from their Bribie island customers for a number of years now, as an organisation they now want to offer their loyal customers a better shopping experience. Over the next few months they will be upgrading their Bongaree store to offer the type of experience as a loyal customer deserves. These upgrades will include changes to the fridges, new grocery racking and a new display for a fresh departments. Most of this work will be done after hours, with minimal inconvenience to customers during this process. However, there will be some disruption as they are going to remove the old equipment and then have this replaced, for example they will be removing the old deli fridge as they replace it, this will take some time to complete, during this time there will be prepacked goods for sale in the dairy fridge. Graham Booysen CEO of Cornetts Supermarkets said ‘I would like to thank you for your custom over the years and apologies for any inconvenience we may have caused you over this period whilst we fully refurbish the store’.

The Manager of the Bongaree Store, George (L) and Graham CEO of Cornetts.

Churches of Christ Care, in conjunction with Bribie Moreton Hospice Health Services, has opened an all ages palliative care bed at its aged care service so locals no longer need to travel great distances to care for their loved ones at the end of life. Bribie Moreton Hospice Health Service is sponsoring the purpose designed bed as part of their aim to assist individuals with chronic or other life limiting conditions and their carers by offering high quality care which focuses on the whole person within a community setting. Churches of Christ Care Manager Shirley Watson said the Hospice Suite will support locals and their families through difficult times and the organisation is thankful for the Hospice funding the costs of fit out of this room and ongoing care of clients and their carers. “We had the infrastructure to support another palliative care bed within our service, and are delighted to work with the Hospice,” Ms Watson said. “As an organisation we pride ourselves on acting upon community needs as they arise and this is one such example of how we bring the light of Christ into Bribie Island.” “Clients at the end of life will receive the highest quality care 24 hours a day in a safe and welcoming environment with their loved ones close by.” Ms Watson said the launch of the room last week was particularly

timely, with Palliative Care week being acknowledged across the country. “It is important we talk about the need for palliative care and the impact caring for a loved one during this time has on a family,” she said. “People of all ages, sadly, can require palliative care, not just older people. “Churches of Christ Care is committed to ensuring dignity for all people, particularly during end of life care. Co-located with Churches of Christ Care’s Bribie Island Retirement Village and Community Care service, Bribie Island Aged Care Service is a 111 bed residential care service offering a range of personal care, therapies and accommodation options. Churches of Christ Care is one of the leading not-for-profit providers of seniors and supported living services in Australia, providing retirement living, home and community care, and residential aged care to approximately 3,600 seniors throughout Queensland and supports more than 320 retirement living and residential aged care residents in Melbourne, Victoria.

Sandstone Point Hotel Open for Business

The much anticipated opening of The Sandstone Point Hotel has had the entire region buzzing. Finally they are OPEN for business!

On Sunday May 31st The Comiskey Family hosted a party for, 1800 associated VIP’s, that will stay in the memory banks long after the the lights went out. Paul and Erica Comiskey sure know how to accommodate for everyone. There were horse rides, a jumping castle, a photo-booth, live music and a Helicopter ride on offer for all. All set on the beautiful grounds of the hotel overlooking our pristine Pumicestone Passage. If the food served on the day is indicative of the menu, many people will be very happy. From the freshest seafood to Suckling Roast Pork from the spit, everything was just delightful. The Hotel itself has been cleverly built and designed using some recycled materials and furnished beautifully. There are many different areas inside and out to relax and dine in comfort. With Promises of the entertainment to come, I’m sure it will attract crowds from far and wide in the future. My suggestion is to head to The Sandstone Point Hotel and have a look for yourself, it really is a fabulous venue.

New services to help vulnerable families in Moreton Bay region The Palaszczuk Government will invest nearly $7 million to support vulnerable families in the Moreton Bay region. The funding will establish two new services: Family and Child Connect, to assist families struggling to cope to access help and Intensive Family Support, for families with more critical problems who are at risk of crisis. Member for Morayfield, Mark Ryan, said the two services would create 21 jobs and commence in July, 2015. “This is part of our commitment to help families who are struggling with parenting to get the help they need,” she said. “The groups providing these services will use their experience and knowledge to support to local families who are doing it tough.” Member for Pumicestone, Rick Williams, said the services were part of reforms to the child protection system aimed at preventing problems and helping families before they reached crisis point. “We know that problems with relationships, children or money can create strains on families which could lead to domestic violence. “There is no excuse for violence. But we do need to look at ways to address its root causes. Giving family’s skills to cope better with parenting can play a role in preventing violence.” Family and Child Connect (FaCC) will be rolled out across the state by early 2016 and will help close to 35,000 vulnerable Queensland families every year.

Page 4

Anyone will be able to contact FaCC for free information to connect with the services they need, from police, schools and other services who have concerns about how a family is coping, through to relatives or families themselves. Mercy Community Services, partnering with Kummara and the Caboolture Domestic Violence Resource Service, will receive more than $3.4 million over three years to deliver the Caboolture-based FaCC, which will employ 10 people and service the Moreton Bay Region. Churches of Christ in Queensland will receive $3.6 million over three years to provide Intensive Family Support (IFS) for parents in the Caboolture, Strathpine and Redcliffe areas. The IFS program will employ 11 people including Family Support Workers, Cultural Support Workers and Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Practitioners. Churches of Christ in Queensland is partnering with Bargumar Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corp, Caboolture Domestic Violence Service, Centre Against Violence, and UnitingCare Community to deliver this service. The Palaszczuk Government is investing $15 million over three years for the second round of Family and Child Connect services, part of the government’s response to the recommendations of the Child Protection Commission of Inquiry.

“Your Community First” calls for Candidates With the Council elections in March 2016, a new face has emerged on the Local Government scene with “Your Community First” calling for Candidates to come forward in all 12 divisions for the next elections. YCF is off to a flying start with their Policies in place, Logo developed, website created and financial aspects also ready to go “Your Community First” Chair and former Deputy Mayor of Redcliffe Dr. Peter Houston has called of all talented Divisional candidates to come forward and register with YCF. “It is our intention to run a team in the next election. This will cover all divisions plus the Mayoral position. We hope to field one Council Candidate in each of the Council Positions. This will be what is assessed as the most capable and Talented candidate in each position.” Dr. Houston said. “It will be a two way street with all Council Candidates having to agree to our Policy Platform. These policies are available on our website, www. yourcommunityfirst.org.au We intend to fundraise, but they will also have to have available sufficient funds to run a reasonable campaign” Dr. Houston said. “As the public can see from our website our main points of difference with the Current Moreton Bay Regional Council are the price of Water (which we see as a basic commodity) and this current Council is not doing anything about the price of it. Without a doubt

it is excessive and is forcing people from their own home. Secondly, the seeking and acceptance of Developers Contributions for the election campaign. This they have done in the last two elections. As most of the Councillors have run as a Team they are all guilty and part of it. It is our intention to REFUSE Developer’s Contributions for the Campaign. To accept them is illegal in NSW and one can see why when these people are dependent on Council for their livelihood.” “There are other aspects which people will hear about during the Campaign,” “It is our intention to have an open, honest and approachable Council one that doesn’t outlaw people if they complain too much but which responds effectively and efficiently to Community complaints.” Dr. Houston said. “Your Community First” is a combination of several Community groups Such as The Ratepayers Action Group, Save Redcliffe and the Caboolture First Group. With Members from Caboorture, Bribie, Redcliffe and Arana Hills it looks set to go. Dr. Peter Houston had 17 years on Redcliffe City Council.

Government urges heater safety checks as temperatures drop

As temperatures drop and winter sets in, Queenslanders are being urged to check their heating appliances before using them for warmth and comfort.

Each winter, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services responded to fires started after electrical appliances were misused or not properly maintained. “Last winter, 20 residential structure fires were caused by either faulty or poorly maintained heating equipment,” a spokesperson said. “Because of Queensland’s milder winters, the majority of houses here are not built for the cold, so portable heaters are often used to provide warmth. “Unfortunately that means heaterrelated fires often happen because appliances are placed too close to flammable materials like blankets, mattresses, pillows or clothing. “Of the 15 people who died in house

fires in 2014, nine lost their lives during the colder months. This winter we want to put a freeze on fire fatalities.” “Older heaters caused the most concern. New heaters have the added benefit of additional safety features, whereas older style heaters may not.” Regardless of the age of the appliance, whether it be a heater or an electric blanket, it is crucial these appliances be checked every year for fraying, or exposed cords, or rust. QFES recommends these checks are performed by a qualified electrician. Parents need to be aware of potential dangers associated with children’s clothing - particularly nightwear. Children’s clothing can be highly flammable, so parents need to be taking the time to read labels on clothing. It is also important for parents to educate children on the dangers of playing near heaters. Never leave children unsupervised around heating equipment.

Local Resident Turns 100 this month

Lillian Edna Shipley turns 100 years of age on June 12th 2015. She was born in Townsville and now resides at Bribie Retirement Village in the independent living section. She has led a very active life participating in many sports and activities and still likes to play Croquet a couple of times a week. Lillian remains active and in good health. The Bribie Islander wishes her a happy and healthy birthday. Well done Lillian!

Grants open for Pumicestone events celebrating disability Pumicestone community groups, schools, sports clubs and other non-government organisations can now apply for a grant to hold an event during this year’s Disability Action Week or International Day of People with Disability. Almost $150,000 in total is available for events to be held across the state during Disability Action Week 2015 (13-19 September) or on International Day of People with Disability (3 December). Disability Community Event Grants of up to $5000 were available for local events and activities that welcomed people with disability in everyday life. “The Government understands the challenges that many people with disability in our community face on a daily basis, and these grants are about overcoming those challenges and promoting inclusion,” a spokesperson said. “Grants are available for events that promote the rights and wellbeing of people with disability; strengthen how they access and are included in their community; or encourage mainstream services and the broader community to connect and engage with people with disability.” “Disability Community Event Grants will help to bring our community together, and I look forward to attending some of the fantastic local events during Disability Action Week in September.”

Disability Services Minister Coralee O’Rourke said the Palaszczuk Government was committed to making a difference to the lives of people with disability, their families and carers right across Queensland. “We are also looking for events that support communities, local businesses and community services to take up opportunities presented by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) which will roll out in Queensland from 1 July 2016,” Mrs O’Rourke said. “When the NDIS starts in Queensland, it will benefit thousands of Queenslanders with disability, their families, carers and the wider community by enabling greater social and economic participation of people with disability.” Applications close on Monday 15 June 2015. For information about the grants, and the types of events to be funded in 2015, go to www.qld.gov.au/ disabilityactionweek For information about the NDIS visit www.ndis.gov.au or call the NDIS Hotline on 1800 800 110. Letters H A to the YOUVE Editor SAY!!R

More Reflections O, how refreshing is the bush, far away from a city’s push where there, amongst the sounds you hear, are those of children playing near and traffic snarls upon the street adding to the city’s heat – while radios that blare out loud drown the roar of a noisy crowd; no quiet place to rest your head – no sounds of nature by your bed – no sign of placid mountain streams – no place to sit, relax and dream. O, why does man persist in living in a state so unforgiving when, far away from a city’s push – there is contentment in the bush. © Harold Meston 1999 Beachmere To contact Harold please email: thebribieislander@gmail.com

Solar Flare Up Once again our local Labor MP Rick Williams has embellished the facts in both his article and also his full page advertisement in the Bribie Islander in relation to renewable energy job losses (Issue #10 May). Yes, some 1,300 jobs have disappeared from renewable energy activities since 2011-12 till 2013-2014, however upon further investigation of the findings of the Australian Bureau of Statistics the forces which led to this reduction are far less sinister than Mr Williams would have us believe. In essence, the majority of employment in the renewable energy activities in Qld comes from the installation of roof top solar panels (Australia wide 74% in 2011-12, and 49% in 2013-14). The previous Qld Labor government’s excessively generous feed in tariff (FIT) of 44c a kilowatt that was implemented in 2008 and, by the by, does not expire till 2028 (yes folks that’s a 20 year Qld Labor government handout) which is estimated to cost the state $3.4 Billion, not million, BILLION (Queensland Competition Authority report March 2013) during its lifecycle.

Once the previous LNP government closed entry into this consumer cash cow (10/7/2012) the number of solar panel installations plummeted and correspondingly so did the available jobs. As a government who stood on a fiscally responsible platform, the LNP really had no choice in turning off this massive tap of funds disappearing out the door. The same Qld Competition Authority report concluded that the cost of Labor’s FIT scheme will be borne by the average electricity consumer to the tune of an additional $276 pa in 2015-2016. Mr Williams also states that the current Labor government will, under it’s A Solar Future plan have a review for this, that and the other, a study for something else and a trial of another issue. WOW, I can’t help but get excited by all this effort going into the matter. (No time frames or outcomes stated of course.) I only hope they come up with something a little less outrageous than their last attempt. We, as a state, can’t afford another such financial disaster. S L Clemens

know that on a recent visit to the USA, I chatted with two dog owners who had their beloved pets (both big dogs) in specially assigned rooms at the Hyatt in Long Beach. Speaking to management I was informed that it is standard practise for more and more hotels to accommodate animals as well as their owners. In each case they were very well behaved and whilst I know my dog certainly would not have fitted the bill there, I applauded them for the move. On a flight with Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Casablanca I had a lady in the isle opposite with a small dog in a carry bag who told me that the airlines allow up to a certain weight as long as they can be sat on your lap. So come on Aussie, we will soon earn the name of the wowser country if we become so intolerant of those who love their canines that we shut them out in social settings and cage them up like – well animals. Regards Deanne Scanlan

Sky High Noise Levels

Price of Water

Light aircraft noise has increased over Pacific Harbour in recent weeks, especially on the weekends and school holidays. Both the Caboolture Aero Club and the Redcliffe Aero Club have a “Good Neighourhood Policy” which states that aircraft should not fly over residential areas if possible because of noise levels and the pilots are supposed to try and obey this policy. There is enough bushland north of white patch for them to fly without constantly flying over the residential areas. For complaints you can ring the respective clubs giving them the time and duration, and if possible the aircraft registration, which is on the under-side of the wing. Alternatively you can contact Air Services Australia which is a national complaints centre for all aircraft noise complaints. Phone number is 1800802584 Email ncis@airservicesaustralia.com (ncis stands for ‘noise complaints and information service’) not the TV show. So if you have a problem with aircraft noise its best to contact Airservices Australia who can collect all the data and act accordingly. Regards Wayne Lawson

Jim Soorley as the Chairman of Unitywater has done no favours to the People of Redcliffe. The Price of Water is already exorbitant and as I reported is the most expensive in South East Queensland (Channel 7); and the most expensive in Australia in 2012 for a normal use. (Aust. Water Commission website) Our Water / Sewerage bills have almost reached the same level of money as the Rate Bill. I’m pleased Mr. Soorley answered my letter on the price of water/ Sewerage, because neither he nor Mr. Theo the CEO of Unitywater (who wrote me a letter) refute the facts I provided to the people of Redcliffe. No wonder Unitywater have frozen its prices for this year. It had to! Soorley is treating Unitywater as an UNELECTED COUNCIL and guess what, we are paying the Bill. At least the voters used to have a say when it was an ELECTED COUNCIL and Water and Sewerage prices were under its control. Unitywater needs to be reformed to achieve this end as it is feeling guilty about the high prices at the moment. The Current MBRC under Cr. Sutherland is doing nothing about it. Thank you for publishing a write up and photo for our “Biggest Morning Tea” I am sure it helped our very successful day.

I read with interest the articles both for and against dogs in cafes and find it amusing to say the least. I cannot help but wonder if those against have ever travelled the world at all. As a nation we try to pride ourselves on being tolerant and innovative but it seems that when these issues arise we are anything but. In Europe you would be howled down for even suggesting that dogs not be allowed to sit with their owners in cafes. Some may be even shocked to

Thankyou emergency services and police volunteers Rick Williams MP Member for Pumicestone is encouraging locals to stop and say thanks to the hardworking committed emergency service and police volunteers that help keep Pumicestone residents safe day in, day out. As part of National Volunteer Week, Mr Williams said it was a great opportunity to shine the light on the dedicated emergency services and police volunteers that assist both on the frontline and behind-the-scenes right across the Pumicestone area. “There are SES and Rural Fire Service Queensland personnel right across the Pumicestone region, but many of our community don’t realise they are all actually local volunteers,” he said. “Their amazing dedication to our community never ceases to amaze me. They give up their own time to help out

Kal Ma Kuta The picture of Daphne Kal Ma Kuta Dux in the May 10 issue raises an interesting point – the date given for the demise of Kal Ma Kuta. In doing so I make it clear that I mean no disrespect to Daphne. I have lived on Bribie as an adult for 60 years but I know Reg Campbell from my early childhood. Reg was a true pioneer of the Bribie region. He was an intelligent and reliable person. I can honestly say that in the time that I knew him I never saw him lose his temper except on one occasion. It was with regard to the death date displayed on the Kal Ma Kuta memorial. It is shown as 1897. A little background may be helpful. In the very early 1900’s Reg’s Father was appointed foreman for James Clark’s oyster operations at Toorbul Point. Mrs. Campbell with sons Cec & Reg lived at Clontarf while a new home was built for them on the south bank of Ningi Creek a short distance upstream from the mouth. The Turner’s (Kal Ma Kuta) residence was on the beach south of the mouth of Ningi Creek. (I once took Cec Campbell for a drive to the beach at the end of Kal Ma Kuta drive at Toorbul Point. Until a short time prior to that visit there had been a post with some wire on it about

during times of natural disaster and other tough times – and do their best to help prevent community tragedy. Mr Williams said there were also over 300 Volunteers in Policing (VIPs) helping out officers across the state. “In the Pumicestone region, there are VIPs helping our local officers out by assisting with non-frontline duties like promoting crime prevention initiatives and answering simple non-operational enquiries from members of the public who visit police stations. “They also play an important role in supporting victims of crime. VIPs often attend with police to speak with and provide support to people who have gone through really difficult and traumatic experiences.” Mr Williams said every day across the Pumicestone area, volunteers were responding to emergencies and helping out locals. 100 yards north of the toilet block it was removed for some reason. I mentioned it to Cec. He was confident that it was probably part of Turner’s residence. Looking north across the mouth of the creek he was amazed. He said there was once a substantial spit of land with large trees that ran north from Turner’s Place.) The Campbell boys started their schooling at Humpybong. The family moved to the Ningi Creek home in 1905. There was no school available to them until James Clark had a school built at Toorbul Point. They started school there in 1908. The boys walked to the school daily from their home on Ningi Creek. Their route to and from Toorbul Point took them past Turner’s place twice a day. Reg told me that on their way home as hungry school children Mrs Turner (Kal Ma Muta) would cook them fried scones. Cec Campbell described to me the method that Mrs Turner used to grill mullet. She split the fish down the backbone and flattened it. (Kippered.) She impaled the fillets on a small forked branch. Not unlike a large toasting fork. The butt was pushed into the ground with the flesh facing a wood fire. It would appear that they knew the lady quite well. Her date of death is given as 1897. The boys moved to Ningi in 1905. They started school at Toorbul Point in 1908. Ted Clayton

BRIBIE: A SENSITIVE ENVIRONMENT

Plastics in our waterways Target tried to restrict the use of plastic bags but they got so many complaints from customers that they reintroduced the use of plastic. Millions of tons of rubbish enter the world’s oceans each year. This plastic pollution rides the ocean’s currents and reaches the furthest corners of our seas. Plastic is now even in the Antarctic wilderness. Unlike naturally-based paper or glass, plastic never truly goes away; it just breaks down into smaller pieces to be ingested by marine creatures, birds and us. What it means is that most pieces of plastic you and I have used are still around today. With a little effort, we can make a difference. Many places have reduced the use of plastic bags by charging for their use. South Australia introduced a ‘Zero Waste’ program which led to its lightweight bag ban in October 2008. Marine authorities report a drastic decrease in plastic in their waterways.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Bribie set the example on Moreton Bay and declared the island a plastic free shopping environment? We are surrounded by water. We know that plastic blows from bins or comes through drains into the sea. Many of us are picking up plastic on our daily walks but can’t we reduce the chances of plastic being there by reducing its availability and use? We could have a sign before the Bribie bridge: BRING A BAG: BRIBIE: A PLASTIC BAG FREE ENVIRONMENT. Wouldn’t that be something to be proud of? Glenda Charles (for BIEPA)

TIGHT TUSHY & NICE ARMS

WHY SHOULD WOMEN Include Resistance or Weight Training In Their Fitness Routines, WHY NOT!!! Are You Happy With a Saggy Butt and Floppy Arms? While walking, cycling or even jogging can improve your cardiovascular fitness it will not always reduce body fat or improve body shape it can even make you look scrawny. Without weight training your muscles will not retain their size, your strength will reduce and you can lose bone density. When you lose muscle tone your body burns fewer calories which will make it even harder for you to lose fat. Once you are over 40 your body becomes softer and you lose muscle mass as you age, it is hard to keep a nice round butt and toned arms when your muscles are no longer keeping your skin tight! By doing just 30 mins of strength training two or three times a week you will increase muscle tone and shape, your energy and sleep patterns improve and the added bonus is weight loss will occur at a faster rate than with cardio alone. Exercise also reduces symptoms of depression and stress so you become Happier as well as healthier.

Everybody is different so there are no “one size fits all” answers which is why at Fit Beyond 50 our Personal Training clients are treated as individuals with personalised programs, nutrition suggestions and motivation to help our clients reach their specific health and fitness goals. Our small group circuit classes allow our trainers to help each person in the class, reducing the risk of an injury from “Trying to keep up” with a large class and fast movements and with clients ranging from 17 to 82 we know how to help all ages and fitness levels. With over 35 years’ experience with weight training and personal experience of weight loss after 50, we understand how tough getting the body you want can be, but how fabulous it feels when you look in the mirror and love what you see. Last Parliamentary Sitting Update

On Sunday 24th May 2015 we celebrated the official opening of the new $9 million bridge crossing Lagoon Creek at Brown Street, Caboolture. This was a joint project with Moreton Bay Regional Council and the Queensland Government. The new bridge is named after former Senior Sergeant Perry Irwin (The Officer in Charge, Bribie Island Police Station) who was killed on August 22, 2003 in the line of duty.

M.P. WAGES: Despite attacks from the LNP this week Labor stopped the massive MP wage increases started by the LNP Newman Government. In line with community expectation Labor voted to tie future M.P. wage increases to the same amount that Public Servants receive, this year about 2.2%. POWERS RESTORED TO THE SPEAKER: Labor reinstated rights of the “Speaker of the House” restoring levels of dignity and respect once mandatory, before the LNP government stripped them away. The Speaker can now better control bad behaviour and name calling in the Parliament from both sides of politics. Parliamentarians need to conduct themselves professionally in Parliament given they represent the people who voted for them. CROSS BENCHES- the Members of the cross benches (Katter Party) were granted a say in the running of the Parliament, which was denied previously under the LNP Government.

The Palaszczuk Government is focusing on children with the announcement of $7 million funding in support of vulnerable, disadvantaged and domestic violence affected people in our community. The money will be used to assist families in early intervention to prevent the onslaught of domestic violence and other issues. I had the pleasure of jointly announcing funding with parliamentary colleagues Shane King MP, Nikki Boyde MP, Chris Whiting MP and Mark Ryan MP.

It is a well-known fact that smoking reduces life expectancy and quality of life and I am encouraging smokers to take the steps towards quitting by planning a strategy and reaching out for support. Quitting immediately improves health and wellbeing in both the short term and the long term. Just 72 hours after quitting, food tastes better. Long term benefits of quitting include a decreased risk of heart disease, stroke and cancers of the mouth, throat and lung.

Chaplaincy Dinner Fund Raiser I recently attended the Chaplaincy Dinner Fund Raiser on behalf of the Premier Anastacia Palaszczuk and our people in the Pumicestone Electorate. On the night $55,000 was donated for vital chaplaincy work in our schools. Andy Gourley the founder of “Red Frogs” was the guest speaker. His team keep our kids safe at schoolies. She is worth more than gold By Nikitta Chee

With the joy and celebration of Mother’s Day now in the wake, I am compelled to reflect on the quiet yet fierce strength and absolutely integral role of a mother. Frequently I am learning and being reminded of this fascinating position of leadership as I read, watch and listen to those special women and in some cases men (who too have taken hold of the depth of such a role) placed closely around me. Some of these women in fact do not have children and some have chosen not to but I watch as their grace and stability carry them reminding me of the things that I value most and bring me comfort from Mine own. Such a woman is a fearsome thing to behold. I want to share with you dear reader the passion and awe I have for motherhood and show you the hidden strength in one such a person. Celebrating all things ‘mumsy’ is something that we as a culture are pretty well-prepared for. I think it’s lovely; when it’s Mother’s Day the flowers are out in abundance, the soaps, body-washes, and all things beauty too, even the sneak in of light gym equipment (to combat the extra baked goodies!) I’m not saying we don’t get the same enjoyment over a new footy or jump leads but we unashamedly understand it’s those types of things on a larger scale that speak to the heart of mums and mums to be. Openly this is accepted because its appreciating shared interest and expression. It is interesting then to compare this open appreciation to the entrapment Mothers felt and the attitude toward themselves and their role when the 1960s gave birth to women’s rights. The pursuit of redefining the female

role reached its peak in the 60s before centuries1 of oppression for being considered an inferior race was broken off. The respected areas of service throughout the workforce and governmental system which were once reserved for men only were now open to the natural leadership abilities and smarts of women around the world. Before then the government and business domain was missing out big time because women weren’t free to bring in their natural, individual abilities too. Consequently, if you cut any large people group out, you’re going to miss out on so much natural skill. I wonder how many businesses could have done better if they would have allowed a woman to lead in the way she wanted and the way she worked best. For example, say a particular female grew up with a great understanding and skill for mechanics but because of the faux law of gender devaluation she could not harbour those talents. Basically, she couldn’t, ‘show how it was really done!’ So I can understand when women’s rights were won there was a great influx of creative talent in the places that were desperately lacking. Yet at a time when great freedom was being had for women and men (who

didn’t know what they were missing!) it was mothers who in fact felt trapped. Imagine you’re a mother who has been desperately wanting for such a long time to be respected and admired for her equal value to her male counterpart but has fallen short of the revolution. She now has a family and loves them dearly but she feels stuck watching other young women join the workforce and unleash their creative passions. Oh how I wish they knew that whatever they thought success was in this world, they already had it. Perhaps the lie came men were getting more respect earning the bread then women raising the next generation of great leaders when they both deserved equal praise. Motivational speaker and advocate for women’s rights is leading author Kris Vallotton who states in his book, ‘Fashioned to Reign’ – Empowering Women to Fulfil Their Divine Destiny, “To a large extent, we have lost the high value we should place on motherhood in society.” 2 Tell me, what kind of job is there out there that makes you vomit, tired to the point of exhaustion, go to the bathroom every 15 minutes, crave certain foods and be repulsed by the others or what kind of workout uses every single muscle in the human body or what kind of bill takes hours of intensive labour both physically and mentally to pass and come back again and again and again, and maybe two more times again? What kind of calling is this? I’d say it is one of the most important and honourable and incredible kind of

callings there ever was. The miracle of motherhood is unexplainable. It is something given that this world just can’t put a label on; it can’t measure it, or tame it or put it in a box. I want mothers to feel as important as they really are and recognized as heroines. You are amazing! I know how important mine is to me, so I cannot fathom how much more blown away I will be at this phenomenon when I become one. Mothers are hidden gems that don’t shout their own name but serve with military precision and give so generously. And something they really don’t deserve is judgement. If a mum feels that she wants to give her all and partake of such a sacred blessing as much as she can by being a stay-at-home-mum, praise her! For she is a rarity. Once we have realized how worthy a role motherhood is and matriarchal and patriarchal characters come together to fulfil their unique duties businesses, governments and families will prosper. Both women and men, mothers or fathers should be given love and respect whether they’re working in an office or at home, for though one gets more outward recognition the other is just as worthy. 1. Puppies Socialisation and Training – Part SEVEN By Yvonne Bishop

As puppy gets older they will start exploring more around the garden and find the joys of using their vocal chords! Let’s talk about digging and next issue - barking. Both are natural behaviours and should never be seen as the dog being naughty. Before any behaviours can be stopped or redirected to something more appropriate you first need to determine the cause. Digging Most dogs enjoy digging. Some breeds are more susceptible to digging than others such as Terrier breeds. There are many causes to why dogs dig. On hot days dogs often dig to lie down on cool dirt. If the dog is outside during the daytime it pays to check where are the cool spots or provide plenty of shady areas for the dog to rest. They may dig to bury a bone or toy etc. If he stops chewing on the bone and is carrying it around he may be looking for somewhere to hide it so he come back later to finish it of. You may then want to take the bone away and give it to him another day. Some dogs can hear creatures such as worms, lizards in the ground and will try and dig them out. This is probably the hardest one to stop unless you concrete your whole backyard. Some dogs dig to escape especially if they are anxious for instance with thunderstorms. (I will address anxieties in later issues). Or, it could be boredom. (This subject

M

will also be covered later). Redirecting their digging to a more suitable area can work or provide a sandpit and fill with loose sand and soil. Encourage him to dig their and bury his favourite toy or bones and treats. He will find that very rewarding when he digs them up. Punishing him for digging is not effective. We very rarely catch them in the act. It is better to get the area reprimanding him as it is instant. Some effective traps are place their own faeces in the hole, some dogs are deterred by this and won’t go back to the hole but may start another one, again fill it up. It could take 3 or 4 holes before the dog stops. Some people have had success with burying water balloons or covering the area with pepper, curry powder which may make the dog sneeze and then avoid the area. Or if he likes to dig in your favourite flower bed, you may need to cordon of the area with chicken wire to prevent him access. Happy training! If you have any questions and would like to know when classes are on, please contact Yvonne 0416102071.

Can we share our food with our pets? Dogs and cats are not as well adapted to consuming a varied diet as we are. The simple reason is that we are omnivorous and they are carnivorous. Omnivores (including people) are tolerant of the widest variety of foods whereas carnivores are much less tolerant being designed primarily to live on meat based foods, which of course includes whole animal consumption gut contents and all. Dogs and cats lack the enzyme required to break down onion (or any vegetable in the onion family) and onion is often fatal if eaten by them. It causes the red blood cells to burst in circulation with terrible consequences, leading to rapid kidney failure. Also, our dogs and cats don’t do well on diets with a lot of fats in, fats and certain foods trigger some very serious gut diseases such as severe vomiting and diarrhoea and even bleeding into the gut. Meats with a lot of fat and any meat from pigs (including bacon, port and ham) appears to be particularly nasty for triggering severe bouts of gastroenteritis in many of our dogs and cats. With pig based meats it is probably both the high fat content as well as the actual pig protein source that triggers gastro-enteritis; pig meats are simply too rich for our dogs and cats to stomach! If we feed our beloved dogs and cats on our own food, we run the real risk of literally poisoning them with onion or pig meats, to name just two of the more common foods which are fine for people but can have terrible (even fatal) health consequences for our pets . It is just too easy to accidentally poison our pets if we feed them on people food. Dr Jackie does home Veterinary calls, phone 0400 699704 to arrange an appointment.

The Bossy Rainbow Lorikeet

By Marjory Webber

Trichoglossus haematodus

How the early settlers must have marvelled when they first encountered the noisy, brilliantly coloured, Rainbow Lorikeet. With its colours of red, blue, yellow, orange and green, it is hard to mistake for any other bird. On Bribie Island the bird most like it is the Scaly-breasted Lorikeet which is mostly green with red eyes, beak and underwings with a few yellow feathers across its breast. Both species are flock orientated and often band together in large numbers while flying, resting or roosting for the night. The belligerent and gregarious Rainbow Lorikeets are very common to Bribie Island but are also found in Northern and Eastern Australia, Indonesia, P.N.G. and some Pacific Islands. They inhabit rainforests, eucalypt forests, heath lands and parks and gardens. They are sometimes nomadic and will travel up to 50 km a day following flowering trees. Numbers have increased in populated areas as the birds seem

enjoy the benefits of artificial feeding, handy fruit crops and flowering gardens. Their lifespan in the wild is about twenty years. Not all the food given by us in kindness is good for them. Improper feeding and unhygienic food trays can cause moulting, disease and even death in many cases. Their primary foods are pollen and nectar so Lorikeet nectar and pollen food which can be bought from pet shops is a safe option. Fruit is on their menu in the wild, so washed, cut up fruit is a morsel which can be added. Seeds are also part of their diet so mixed wild bird seeds would probably go down very well. Birds can become very reliant on their handouts so it is important to give them only a small, treat like quantity so they are still able to fend for themselves in the wild. It is best

to avoid bread and honey, sugar solutions, biscuits and chips. The best feeding plan of all is to plant lots of flowering trees such as Bottlebrush, Grevilleas and other flowering native shrubs in your garden. It will bring the Lorikeets as well as many other nectar eating birds. Rainbow Lorikeets chew old wood making a dust on which they normally lay two white eggs in hollows, usually in Eucalyptus trees. The females incubate the eggs and the males help with the nest preparation and feeding the young.

Landing.

Rainbow Lorikeets chattering.

Inspecting a hollow for a possible nest.

When it comes to finding a nesting hollow the bossy Rainbow Lorikeets have been able to compete successfully against the Indian Mynas. In the middle of the day when it is hot they rest in the trees, chattering, preening and chewing off leaves and twigs, but again begin their pursuit for food in the afternoon. Seventy percent of their time is occupied by feeding using their brush-like tongues to gather pollen and nectar. Their water is mostly obtained from wet leaves. An interesting fact about Rainbow Lorikeets is that when the flocks are flying to their nightly roosts they follow a set flight path using landmarks such as coastlines, rivers or mountains as a guideline. Their main predators are raptors and pythons. I did see a crow eating a newly killed lorikeet once but am not sure if it was killed by the crow or whether it met its end by some other means.

Bribie Island Photography Club Our judging this month was done remotely by PSQA accredited judge, Barry Whisson, in Toowoomba. All of our images were loaded to our web site for the judge to assess. He provided us with a verbal, as well as a written, critique for each photo. These critiques are very helpful as we learn where we are making mistakes and where we are doing things right. The theme was “Pictorial” and this section was taken out by our new member Andy Nicholls with his photo titled “Flood”. Congratulations Andy! Other winners were:John Cupper with his image titled “Tuatara” was a first in the Mono Print category. Ron Le Huray’s “Tastes Good” won the Open Colour Projected Image. Marj Webber with “Raindrops” and “Waterlily” won both the Mono Projected Image and Open Colour Print. Our meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month at the Arts Centre in the Boardroom at 7 pm. The entrance is at the back of the building. Our next meeting is on June 22nd and we would love to welcome new members. Our annual fees are $35 and we pay $3 at each meeting we attend. The first two meetings are free. Just come along or ring Gordon or Gail. Gordon - 3410 1279, Gail - 3408 9850 bribieislandphotographyclub @gmail.com

The Bribie Winelander The Impact of Private Labels When it comes to enjoying your favourite wine do you care where the wine comes from or who owns the label? An area that is impacting on independent winery sales is the development of Private Labels by the major chains, this is a form of loyalty selling because if you connect with a label such as Bowlers Run or Buckle My Shoe, you have to go to a Woolworths Liquor store to buy it, Counting Sheep and Wahu labels belong to Coles Liquor Stores. But it isn’t just at the lower end of the market you will find these private labels Baily and Baily and Crittenden and Co among others belong to Woolworths, Penola Estate and Robinsons are a couple that belong to Coles. Unlike the Private Labels in the grocery department Woolworths and Coles don’t display their name on the label, but on the back label if it says International Liquor Wholesalers (ILW) or Pinnacle Drinks then it belongs to Woolworths and anything with James Busby belongs to Coles. Does it matter that the prime display areas in their shops are full of their own wines or that your favourite label is now on the bottom shelf where it is harder to find, does it matter that Woolworths and Coles are estimated to control in excess of 70% of wine sales around Australia and their major aim is to encourage you to buy their own labels, only you can answer that. In the past most of the Private Labels were made by independent wineries

anyway, however now that Woolworths own their own wineries this will obviously change and probably Coles will go down this track as well. Aldi is currently the largest seller of private labels nationally having around 60 wines including sparkling, 8 beers, 6 spirits and RTD’s, however because of the quirky licensing laws in Queensland which connects liquor store licences to hotels, and it is unlikely Aldi will ever buy a hotel here to obtain four bottle shops as Woolworths and Coles have done to buy Aldi liquor brands in Queensland you have to go on line. Astonishing figures from the Nielson Surveying Group show retailers are driving this growth through three tactics, premiumisation, price promotion, and innovation and these labels will likely account for a quarter of all grocery sales within the next five years which probably be the same with wine. It is also surprising that almost all

households in Australia and New Zealand have purchased some form of Private Label grocery or liquor product over the last twelve months! But loyalty will come at a cost, with the market not increasing it will also be the death knell of many old favourites as wineries will not be able to afford to make them at a competitive price and the chains probably won’t carry them anyway. Another trick the chains use is to go to a particular winery and offer to buy the whole stock of a particular wine if they can have the product exclusively, initially this seems like a great opportunity for the winery unless at some time in the future they may decide to drop it. The Wine Industry in Australia is going through fairly turbulent times with pressure coming from all sides. Australian white wine sales have been hard hit by the continued growth of New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs and have resulted in wineries turning to different grape varieties in an attempt to persuade drinkers to remain loyal to their brand. Varieties such as Pinot Grigio, Pinot Gris, Vermentino, Aglianico, Albarino, Verdejo, and Fiano are just some of the names I have noticed recently, and as the market isn’t growing one has to presume these are eating into proven classics we have made well for years such as Chardonnay, Riesling, Verdelho, Semillon and even home grown Sauvignon Blanc. Is this just a knee jerk reaction to The Sauvignonisation of our

By Philip Arlidge

market or a genuine attempt to find the elusive answer to the problem because although I find New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs quite pleasant, especially a chilled glass on a warm summer afternoon to me there is an awful lot of same same about them. I have recently tried a Vermentino, a Pinot Gris and a Fiano and in my opinion they are not a match on a Clare Valley Riesling, A Hunter Valley Semillon, Hunter Valley Verdelho, Margaret River Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc blend or Margaret River Chardonnay especially if enjoying with food. At the moment I think at cellar door it provides an interesting opportunity for winemakers to chat to clients about something different but on the liquor store shelves where the products basically have to talk for themselves I think it makes for a lot of confusion and as from experience most wine drinkers who have to part company with their hard earned cash are rarely likely to experiment. The problem is not so severe with red wines as nothing has made such an impact on this market and is unlikely to do so as I believe red wine drinkers are more selective and experimental with their wine drinking habits. While Shiraz still dominates and Cabernet Sauvignon follows look out for these Australian newcomers such as Dolcetto, Tempranillo and Barbera for a change.

Dining out

with Barry Noyce

From Naples to Rome to Florence to us.... This Restaurant is long overdue! “THE URBAN VINE”, overlooking the Marina at Sandstone Point, has brought to our insatiable appetites an extensive selection of fine Italian cuisine, reminiscent of the individual flavours when one travels from southern Italy to the far north, where the tomato base is substituted with a creamy richness. Unlike many Italian-style restaurants that generally concentrate on offering only those dishes that originated in a particular area of the Italian countryside, “The URBAN VINE” has perfected their menu with such an assortment it could be a difficult decision to resolve. Starting with the Pizzas, from the Wood Fired Oven, in full view, the selection appears almost endless. In two sizes, Regular and Large, the choice ranges from Prawn Tail; to Garlic or Tandoori Chicken and the “Slammer” with a seafood combination combined with avocado, bacon and roasted peppers. If that doesn’t get your taste buds dancing, there’s at least a dozen more different toppings from which to choose plus several Vegetarian Pizzas that have roasted pumpkin, cashews, eggplant and goats cheese included with other healthy delights. Even inviting to the non-vegetarian. Important to note when going for Lunch, Pizzas are served from 1pm. If fresh Pasta is your fetish, then you can’t possibly go wrong with the menu that “The URBAN VINE” has on offer. We’ve all enjoyed a good Bolognese over the years but here and now experience the taste sensation of a “Fettuccini Gamberi”, ribbons of pasta cooked with mushrooms, king prawns and shallots combined with a Napoli cream sauce. Not fussed on ribbon pasta? - Then go for the “Penne Royal” with fresh chicken breast, bacon and mushrooms in a Brandy cream sauce. My companion chose the “Spaghetti Carbonara” which was as appetizing in taste as it was in appearance. A generous serving with more than enough larger bacon pieces throughout in a traditional cream

sauce. Choosing a Pasta dish to your liking along with a Focaccia or Herb Bread provides a rewarding taste sensation for Lunch or Dinner. The withdrawal symptoms of a genuine Veal Scallopini never seems to fade completely, having come from inner-city living, but “The URBAN VINE” has conquered that desire in one glance at their Dinner Menu. Not one choice, but several, so it had to be the “Veal Scallopini Marsala” which comprised of several veal scallops, pan fried, a generous serving of Marsala sauce and at least four fresh vegetable servings that were perfectly cooked in every way, adding a radiant colour to the meal. When returning to this well appointed restaurant with their white tablecloths, conducive ambience, attentive staff and a fine Chef who delivers some of the best Italian food, the “Veal Scallopini Campagnola” with fresh spinach, grilled bocconcini in a Napoli sauce could be a perfect choice. Or maybe, the “Veal Scallopini Funghi” with fresh mushrooms. However, Chicken and Seafood lovers havent been overlooked by this versatile restaurant and can relish the thought of a fresh chicken breast in a “Polo Funghi” with a brandy cream sauce or the eternal favourite “Chicken Parmigiana” traditionally topped with cheese and a Napoli sauce. The local Prawns are served in a garlic cream sauce or a chilli Napoli sauce, both on a bed of fettuccini with fresh vegetables and potato. The restaurant is fully licensed with Outdoor Seating and is Open from 11.30 am until late. Excellent venue for a group of friends to meet and relax

while experiencing the tastes of Italy. To avoid disappointment and time, a Reservation is always recommended. First car park on left in Spinnaker Drive and follow the path on the left side of the building.

The Bribie Winelander

Names like Grenache, Mataro, Durif and Mourvedre have actually been around for years and have produced some classic table wines and fortified wines. Whilst on fortified wines Australia produces outstanding premium ports, sherries, muscats and tokays although nowadays we can’t use some of these names on the label due to their European connection. Briefly we can thank the English for the development of port as it didn’t exist until late in the 17th century. When war broke out between The English and French in 1689 the tap was turned off on the supply of wine so they turned to The Douro region of Portugal as a new wine supplier. The problem was getting the wine to England in decent condition to drink so brandy was added which increased the alcohol level acting as a preservative but it also made the wine a bit sweeter. The English developed a taste for the new style of wine and Port was born, remember it much easier to make drinkable port than it is drinkable table wine. Port comes in several styles: Vintage – In Australia this is the least popular, in fact very few wineries now make it, but in Europe is the pinnacle of port production, in fact finding vintage ports on our shelves can be difficult but when you do the rewards can be great. Unlike premium tawny’s the winery blends the best of their wines and bottle them after just two years in the cask. The port then develops in the bottle, which can take place over many years, if you can find a ten year old vintage port snap it up but remember once you remove the cork or unseal it, it should be drunk straight away as it will deteriorate very quickly.

Veal Scallopini

Premium Tawny – These wines are matured by the winery in what is known

as a solera system which is where barrels are stored on top of each other in different vintages the oldest being at the bottom. Each year wine is taken from the various vintages to produce the port, some of the very expensive ports such as Penfolds Grandfather can contain a small proportion of wine that is over 50 years old! Also these wines will not improve in the bottle. Commercial Tawny – Even these can have a small proportion of port with some age such as Penfolds Club which has wine that is aged up to 5 years. However the really cheap ports are just cheap wine that has been fortified with distilled spirit. We shall look at other fortified wines next month This month’s suggestions. Penfolds Club Tyrrells Special Aged Tawny Dutschke Old Codger Tawny Bleasedale The Wise One Tawny Premium Tawny Saltram Mr Pickwick Seppeltsfield Para Grand Penfolds Grandfather Tawny Cheers Philip Arlidge An anecdote from the 19th century updated. A prominent wine taster suffered a fractured skull when his car overturned. He was carried unconscious to a nearby house where a doctor lived and as he had no antiseptic at home began to clean the wine tasters wound with some old wine from his wine cabinet, some of which trickled down to the wine tasters lips. The wine taster suddenly blinked and opened his mouth and everyone bent forward to hear his last words. Weakly and through the death rattle in his throat he whispered “Grange Hermitage 1974”

Tax File Number

Your Tax File Number is as important as a pin number on a bank account. Only supply your tax file number when required. Some examples include when opening a bank account, beginning work with a new employer, for share registries or when contacting the Australian Tax Office with an enquiry. If you need to supply documents for other reasons ensure your tax file number is deleted or obscured. This will assist in avoiding identity theft, which is becoming more prevalent.

You are entitled to claim tax deductions for some expenses directly related to earning your income. If the expense was work related and private, you can only claim a deduction for the work related portion. Some expenses can be claimed as an immediate deduction whilst others are claimed over time. As a general rule, receipts need to be kept for five years from date of lodgement. If in doubt about whether the item is claimable, keep the receipt and we can discuss the expense when completing your return. We have a thorough understanding of allowable deductions for a broad range of occupations and our detailed interview process may reveal expenses you did not realise were claimable.

Lodgement Dates Generally, tax returns need to be lodged by October 31. When lodging with a registered tax agent, an extension to May 15 may be available depending on your individual circumstances. If you are having difficulty meeting the October 31 deadline, contact us before this date and we can appoint you as a client. In most cases, this will extend your lodgement date. Please call us to discuss your individual circumstances.

Bank Interest People often receive amended returns for failing to include all their bank interest. Once the financial institutions have provided this information to the ATO, we are able to access the data. To ensure your return is completed accurately, request a copy of interest earned from your financial institutions prior to your appointment with us. This information can then be either cross referenced with ATO records or used when the ATO has not yet received the information. Doing this can help us complete your tax return correctly.

The Castaway Convicts The First White Men To Live On Bribie Island From Glenys Mills. Bribie Island Historical Society Member.

In 1823 three Sydney convicts in a small boat were caught in a huge storm which dumped them close to death on Moreton Island. They walked around Moreton bay, thinking Sydney was nearby and were the first white men to live on Bribie Island, being there for many months before rescue. The three castaways of Bribie Island were convict John Finnegan and two ticket of leave convicts, Thomas Pamphlett and Richard Parsons. These three convicts and another ticket of leave man, John Thompson, sailed south from Sydney on 21st march 1823 in an open boat to cut cedar from the Illawarra district. A most severe storm blew them far out to sea on a northerly course. After 21 days at sea, Thompson died and was pushed overboard. After three and a half weeks at sea, on 15th April 1823, Pamphlett, Finnegan and Parsons landed on the northern end of Moreton Island naked, starving and almost dead from thirst. Their boat was dashed to pieces and only Finnegan’s jacket, some flour, a keg, a tin pot, an axe and scissors were rescued.

Castaways on Bribie Island Helped and fed by Aborigines, the weak castaways struggled down Moreton Island to Stradbroke Island, crossed Moreton Bay and landed near Cleveland. Still thinking they were south of Sydney, the three castaways headed north and reached the mouth of a large river, later called the Brisbane River. They followed this river upstream to what is now Oxley Creek, crossed over and continued north up the coastline. Finally, in late September 1823, they crossed Pumicestone Passage and arrived at Bribie Island. Here the three castaways lived with the Joondoobarrie Aboriginal people. They continued to travel north, searching for Sydney on trips with the tribe and Aboriginal fights between clans were witnessed by Finnegan in the north and south. Parsons travelled to a Bunya Feast held every three years in the Blackall Range. Pamphlett and Finnegan were lucky to be rescued after a few months and Parsons more than a year later. Rescue of Pamphlett and Finnegan In 1823 Governor Brisbane sent John

Oxley in the “Mermaid “to find a new outpost for convict re-offenders. On 29th November 1823, on looking through his telescope at Pumicestone Passage towards Bribie Island, he saw what appeared to be a white man among the Aborigines, calling out in halting English. This was Pamphlett. The next day Finnegan, who was returning from Kippa Ring, was rescued at Toorbul Point (now Sandstone Point). Now the castaways found out how far north of Sydney they were. The Brisbane River: Oxley was told of a large river and he was accompanied by Finnegan in a boat to “discover “this river. John Uniacke wrote Pamphlett’s account of The Rescue of Thomas Pamphlett (J.Ashton 1886, copyright expired) the castaways ‘story. Later, on the voyage back to Sydney, Finnegan would add to the story and much information about Aboriginal culture was included. Indeed, the castaways would never have survived without Aboriginal help. On 3rd December 1824, Oxley named the river he had discovered the Brisbane River, after Governor Brisbane, Governor of NSW. Little mention was made of the contribution by the three castaways. Message in a bottle: As Parsons whereabouts were unknown, (he was still travelling north, trying to reach Sydney), a bottle was left with an explanatory note when the “Mermaid” sailed on 6th December 1823 with Pamphlett and Finnegan back to Sydney. On his return Parsons found

the message in a bottle. However, Parsons was illiterate. Rescue of Parsons: Parsons was rescued by John Oxley the next year in the “Amity” on 11the September Pamphlett Returns as a Convict: Pamphlett reoffended and was sent to serve time at Moreton Bay (Brisbane)

1826-1833. The Castaways after Rescue. RICHARD PARSONS: In Australia’s first census November 1828 Richard Parsons was living at Illawarra as a bullock team, driver 40 years old. He was granted an absolute pardon. JOHN FINNEGAN: He became a trusted government guide exploring the Brisbane River area and was a Moreton Bay pilot. THOMAS PAMPHLETT: He re-offended three years after his rescue and as a twice convicted felon was sent to Moreton Bay (Brisbane) in 1826 for 7 years. He left Moreton Bay in April 1833. He died 1st December 1838 at Penrith, probably aged 50. Acknowledgements. a. “Through the Eyes of Thomas Pamphlett” by Chris Pearce. 1990. (Now available as an EBook). b. “The Explorers” by J.G. Prewar Bribie Island

By Warwick Outram

‘A picture is worth a thousand words,’ may apply to the new book, ‘Prewar Bribie Island’, for it contains over 100 photos of Bribie Island taken about a century ago,” said author Warwick Outram. These pictures of when prewar Bribie’, was .Queensland’s top island tourist resort are of interest to residents and visitors, for the book gives an indication of the number of people who travelled to Bribie, how they came, their dress, attraction to Bribie, employment, holiday options,

“Doomba” in passage by Mrs Winston.

and business opportunities. The Bribie community is indebted to Vera Campbell (nee Huet) born in 1902 who as a young girl became interested in photography. Vera had the old type camera using expensive film that provided only about a dozen photos. When exposed the film was sent to Kodak for processing and about two weeks later came back as negatives plus black and white prints. Vera later entrusted her snapshots to Ted Clayton and it is a privilege to present these old photos with Ted’s notes plus some information written by Ted’s cousin, Alex Barnett, telling of his pre-war holidays on Bribie. Today’s Bribie is quite different to prewar. Today’s people mention the “Lamington Syndrome”. Do you know to what they are referring? The book gives a brief explanation. Warwick mentioned, in 1974 when told that Bribie was ‘The Cradle Site of Queensland’, he asked the Bribie

June Monthly Horoscope ARIES (March 21st-April 20th) With your house of family so strongly activated this month, you’ll be looking at how you can improve the lives of your nearest and dearest and at how you can live in harmony. Your chart shows it hasn’t been an easy few months for you, but you’re on better ground now and joint decisions you make from the 21st onwards will prove this fact my friend You can push ahead in work projects from the 17th. TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st) Don’t run when you should be walking Taurus. You need to be casting yourself in a calm and composed light so that others can have the trust and faith in you that they need. Romance is really well starred and for once you can afford to ask for all you want without fear of rejection. People from your past seem to pop up in your life more often than usual and one in particular may want something you’re uncomfortable with. GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st) What you have had no longer appeals to you and so you are left with the risk of looking ungrateful or unappreciative. Watch out for stronger signs trying to take advantage of you socially when you may lose control of how you live your personal life. Make sure you’re the one in the driving seat and in full control. You seem to be intent on showing someone you trust them, but there are other ways of showing our support than giving up our choices this month. CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd) Things will not go to plan this June, but they can in fact go better if you’re willing to strike while the iron is hot and take advantage of those who can help you make your career a better place to be. Jealousy over those you work with is wasted, so try to learn how to get along before the 23rd please or you may end up making an enemy. Do what comes naturally from the 24th to get back on track LEO (July 24th-August 23rd) You seem to be so much more relaxed about who you are and where you’re going with your life and this has a lot to do with the new found support you’ve uncovered in your close ones. The truth is that actions spoke louder than words last month and you’ve proved you have what it takes to do what you want professionally. It’s all about hard work again in June though, when you may find yourself doing overtime or working for free in order to show your allegiance to a certain plan or person. VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd) This is the month you discover who was telling lies and who was speaking the truth. Try not to act on what you learn too quickly though. Instead Virgo, work on showing those around you how good you are at keeping your cool. Friends could become much more for some of you Virgos if you act on what you’re feeling rather than what others are saying. Too much speculation and gossip could well be your downfall if you’re not careful. Working with Pisces and Aries pays dividends especially at a distance LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) This month, you start to put the fun back into your life. You realise you were holding yourself back for the wrong reasons. Watch out for someone in the family putting unfair demands upon you. You’d be far better, my friend, to stand your ground sooner rather than later or you will only look like you’re throwing your toys out of the pram. Work aspects are strong and Mars can help you to make an all important crossover before the 25th if you are willing to sign on the dotted line. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) Too much gossip is getting in the way of you learning the facts. Try to take a step back and look at the bigger picture Scorpio. You and I both know you are meant for bigger and better things and, by letting others know this, you’ll start to build up the self confidence you lost so much of last month. New friends are made in high places after the 11th when you start to realise that your personality can open many doors for you. I believe in you and now you will too. Now it’s time to start living again SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st) Work worries have clearly been getting on top of you and it’s time you took control of the situation. Someone you thought did not have your back in business only wants to see you succeed and events which take place before the 11th will soon confirm this fact. Careful of saying things you don’t mean to family mid-month when many of the signs are likely to be feeling more sensitive than usual. Keep to plans during the last week of June when attention to detail is everything. CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th) Try not to ask your close ones for things you know they don’t want to give Capricorn, or you will only cast yourself in a controlling light. Time spent working on finances and figures in general can help you to work out what your next move should be. Make time for the older generation. They know what you need to hear to make your life a better place to be. You think you’ve lost control in a work matter around the 14th but you’re wrong, sort out what needs to be done to put things right. AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th) Romance is strong in your chart and even if you’re not looking for a relationship you’re going to find offers coming your way. It’s time to work out what you want and who could be of help to you in making your working life a better place to be. Someone you’re missing from your past is actually not who you need Aquarius, so try to start living life as you mean to go on and ask for what you deserve rather than just making do. Take a look at figures. You could end up in the black if you do PISCES (February 20th-March 20th) You tried to make things work Pisces, but it’s time to admit what you couldn’t sort out in your favour. You’re not a bad person, but it’s clear you’ve been believing the hype. Time to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. I see great things for you if you would start to work towards what you want, instead of what others deem is the right thing to do. You can say hello to fresh starts in business if you start to act on those instincts you’re having from the 7th.

Librarian for further information and was surprised when told neither Bribie Library nor other Caboolture Shire Libraries had any books regarding history of Bribie Island. He went away, wrote some short articles about Bribie’s History, had them printed and handed them out to visiting campers and caravaners. Shortly after Bribie Librarian, Lou Young, wrote ‘Information for Students’, the first book in Bribie Library relating to Local History. I continued writing articles for the Chamber of Commerce Holiday Guide, local papers and speaking at meetings about our history as people had told me.

“Koopa” in passage by W & FL Gardner.

I retired about 25 years ago, concentrated on recording Bribie anecdotal history and have now written, printed and donated some 40 books, to the Local History Section of Bribie Library plus the statutory reference libraries throughout the nation. The object is to provide

schoolchildren, local residents, visitors, and researchers with fully indexed reference to information that Bribie Islanders and others have told of Bribie’s past. Ted Clayton congratulated Warwick, saying, ‘This format reaches a wide audience and brings together dates and information that gives the Campbell’s their true place as Bribie Pioneers.’ The book ‘Prewar Bribie’ is available at Nextra Newsagency and Bribie Community Arts Centre RRP $11.95

On which day of the month is my birthday?

Damselflies

At first glance it is not always easy to tell the difference between damselflies and dragonflies but if you look closely you will notice several differences. The damselfly has a longer and more slender body. When in a perched position the wings of the damselfly are folded parallel to the body, while the dragonfly’s wings are stretched straight out from its body. The eyes of the dragonfly are close together and the damselfly has eyes which are widely spaced. The hind wings of the dragonfly are slightly wider whereas all four wings of the damselfly are similar in size.

I have photographed three different, blue damselfly species on Bribie Island. The Common Bluetail is 3.4cm in length and is one of the most common damselflies found in our area. The Blue Riverdamsel at 3.8cm is also common to Bribie Island.

The Eastern Billabong is only 2.5 cm with a blue bar across the top of its head distinguishing it from the other two species which have two blue dots. Damselflies are predators and use their legs to catch insects on the wing. They have very strong jaws with which to munch their prey.

Common Bluetail

The male often displays territorial behaviour particularly if another male encroaches onto his patch. He woos the female with elaborate antics and often with the gift of an insect. They fly forming a wheel shape when mating. The male and female often remain in tandem for some time, and this is usually when she lays her eggs. Some damselflies deposit their eggs into plant tissue while others lay their eggs under the water.

The larvae live in the water and are carnivorous predators preying on insects, worms and sometimes small fish. It usually takes about a year for them to reach adulthood. The adult only lives for a few weeks so the damselfly spends most of its life living under water. It is always a joy to observe these insects whose ancestors were on earth even before the dinosaurs. Committed to Safer Motoring

THE IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR & EFFECTIVE BRAKE TESTING ARE YOUR BRAKES REALLY SAFE? You never know when you will need to stop in a hurry. Most of us trust that our car’s brakes will work effectively when we really need them to, and rely on regular service inspections to check that they are in good working order.

rear axles and the actual drag from your tyres on the road surface. Having your wheels correctly aligned ensures you have the right amount of ‘rubber on the road’ therefore reducing the wear and tear on your tyres which means

Every workshop will ‘check’ your brakes, but very few can actually “test” your brakes. This is where the SafeT-Stop testing centre at BRIBIE CAR CARE is different. You can trust your family’s safety to a Safe-T-Stop test at BRIBIE CAR CARE. It provides an added safety check that goes beyond a general inspection and road test to scientifically test your braking capacity and ensure maximum stopping performance. SAVES YOU MONEY & GIVES YOU PEACE OF MIND Safe-T-Stop performs vital safety checks on the brakes, steering and suspension on your vehicle that other testing methods miss. SAVE MONEY – INCREASE YOUR TYRE LIFE AND FUEL EFFICIENCY The Safe-T-Stop test includes an electronic tyre wear check that not only adds to your car’s safety but can save you money. Safe-T-Stop tests your wheel alignment on both front and

LocaL butchers, Dave and Matt collins, from our newest butchery, Paddock 2 Plate country Meats, Ningi are going from strength to strength with their great little country butchery and to prove it, young Matt has taken out some great awards at the recently contested National sausage King competition.
