Australia’s Largest Medieval Festival on Bribie’s Doorstep By Catherine Moore

The Medieval Festival this July will take locals back in time to an era that has inspired some of our most beloved television series and movies. From Lord of the Rings to Game of Thrones and many more, the middle ages are a popular theme in today’s society. But jousting, battling knights and banquets are not just hidden behind television screens. In fact, all this and more can be seen right at our doorstep on July 11 and 12 at the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology for the annual Abbey Medieval Festival. So whether it is a knight or a noble, a princess or a peasant get into your best middle age outfit and head down to the Abbey Museum. Tickets range in prices depending on specific events or packages. Jousting sessions are $4.00 per ticket. 1 day tickets are $35.00 at the gate for adults, $25.00 for concessions, $15.00 for children 15 and under and $85.00 for family packages (including 2 adults and up to 4 children). Weekend passes are $45.00 for adults, $32.00 for concessions, $20.00 for children and $95.00 for family packages. Banquet tickets are $90.00 for general or $110.00 for premium packages. Discounts apply for ‘early bird’ and prepaid purchases.

Locals Lobbying For Hospital on Bribie By Catherine Moore

A petition is being held for the construction of a hospital on Bribie Island, receiving over 100 signatures in just four days. The creator is known for her success with these petitions after an application of thousands of signatures saw the construction of a new hospital on the Sunshine Coast. This is not the first time locals have called for better medical facilities either. In 2011, QM Properties and the Bribie Island Health Corporation teamed up and set forth a proposal to the Federal Government for funding of a day hospital on the island. In November the same year, the $8.6 million healthcare facility was dubbed “a glorified GP clinic” by the previous State Member for Pumicestone, Carryn Sullivan, as reported by Courier Mail. The need for a closer hospital for Bribie Island relies on two main factors. The percentage of elderly locals and their ongoing requirements for medical care and hospice and the travelling distance for ill residents. A community profile for Bribie showed that in 2011 45.3% of the islands population was over 60, nearly doubling what it was in 2006. Caboolture Hospital nurse, Taylor Robertson, said the impact of transportation for elderly patients whilst sick or injured poses great concern. “There’s some good statistics on the percentage of elderly that have falls

and the injuries that occur from this,” Ms Robertson said. “So you can imagine the pain they have to endure laying on a stretcher in an ambulance for 45 minutes,” she said. “Plus it’s hard for their families to come and visit them which has major social impacts and can lead to depression and patients becoming withdrawn.” “We have that many patients from Bribie here it’s ridiculous.” Bribie resident, Nikki Evers, has to travel 30 minutes to Caboolture Hospital on a regular basis and said we need a Bribie facility “100%”. “One thing that does really stress me is going into labor,” Mrs Evers said. “Have a few complications which may cause an emergency c section,” she said. “I dread to think the amount of stress my unborn baby will be in.” “If we had one on the island my mind would totally be at ease.” The construction of the new estate, Bribie Lakes is expected to bring 350 homes. With growing populace the need for a hospital in the area is only intensifying.

24 hour Ambulance – a Matter of Life or Death By Catherine Moore

Local man Denis Johnson has started a petition for a 24hr emergency service on Bribie after waiting 29 minutes for ambulance to attend to his wife’s heart attack. The petition currently has over 100 signatures but needs more before action will be taken. “It can be a matter of life or death,” Mr Johnson said. It happened at 1:00am, the ambulance that arrived had come from Redcliffe. “It couldn’t unload its passenger at Redcliffe so it had to stop at Caboolture first,” he said. Mr Johnson said that for 40 hours of the week, one man runs the local station and for the other 120 there is no one.

“They’re just not thinking right.” “This other bloke called triple 0 at 8:05am, his wife was having a heart attack, the ambulance didn’t arrive until 9:40am.” With a high percentage of elderly residents and no hospital, locals are in desperate need of 24hr emergency services. 2015 Combined Emergency Services Expo Bribie Island’s Volunteer Marine Rescue base at Bribie Island Marine Parade (off Sylvan Beach Esplanade), Bellara, will play host on Sunday 11 October to a free action-packed day of emergency services demonstrations, kid’s activities and family fun. VMR Bribie Island Commodore, Bob Skinner, said local emergency agencies would demonstrate the latest in marine rescue, fire fighting and policing technology. “Bring the whole family and get up close with our local emergency services heroes,” said Commodore Skinner. “There will be a jumping castle, stalls, free giveaways and plenty of emergency services personnel on hand to give you advice”. Meet local firefighters, police and ambulance officers, marine rescue, SES and Red Cross volunteers, and many more. Equipment on display will include a fire truck, water cannon, rescue boats, and other high-tech equipment. Commodore Skinner said the Bribie Island Combined Emergency Services Expo is part of the state-wide Get Ready Queensland campaign to help local residents get ready for the bushfire and storm season. “Coming along to the expo is a great way to learn more about how you can get your family ready,” he said. “If you do a little to prepare, we all accomplish a lot as a community”. Bribie Island Station Officer Trevor Stark said local fire fighters, Rural Fire Service and SES volunteers would be able to provide local residents with lots of practical tips about how to get ready. “Locals should come along armed with their questions about how to prepare themselves and their property for the threat of bushfire or severe weather,” Mr Stark said.

Just about to open its doors on benabrow avenue is bribie’s new, cool, pool shop called Waterama. Russell Watson the owner is not a newby when it comes to the industry and has spared no expense setting up the shop too, well worth a visit. Having started the business from scratch, Russell has been working hard to deliver great service at the right price in his other two stores in brisbane and this is his third pool shop that he will have opened. Now heading into his tenth year in the game he has another 20 plus years experience in the pump industry. Russell said ‘at the end of the day there is no one better than us in the pool industry. When it comes to sorting out problems, when it comes to sorting out issues, knowledge about hydrolics, pumping and filtration were second to none’ being in the industry such a long time and bringing his wealth of experience to bribie it looks like success for shop number three has started already.

For any more information or advice from Russell please call on 3408 6246 (where the old Indian restaurant was) Page 3

Animal Cruelty Close to Home By Catherine Moore

A mother kangaroo in Toorbul survived five days dodging rescue groups with an arrow lodged through its head before being captured, operated on and released. The roo and her joey were found Friday June 12 on The Esplanade by a local man and were reported to Bribie & District Wildlife Rescue Inc. President of Bribie & District Wildlife Rescue Inc. Sally Arthur said on that Friday the call was directed to Australia Zoo as their team was unable to dart the animal. “Although I haven’t seen this Kangaroo to see the extent of its injuries, kangaroos when captured to treat any injury can suffer with capture myopathy,” Mrs Arthur said. Capture myopathy or shock disease is a condition observed in wild animals that effects their muscle and skeletal function, almost always due to stress or shock. “To transport kangaroos we need to sedate them,” she said. “Myopathy is deadly, sadly even with treatment this may not be a good outcome.” Over the course of four days, both Australia Zoo Rescue Unit and RSPCA attempted to capture the injured creature for treatment.

On the fifth day the mother and joey were caught, operated on and released back to the wild by the RSPCA. The animals were freed instantly after the operation to avoid any chance of them suffering with myopathy. Sadly animal cruelty is too common for this area. In January 2015 a Kangaroo, known as Ralph, was found dead on Toorbul’s main street with two arrows in the side of its body. Neighbouring town, Caboolture, had been on the top of the RSPCA complaint list for four years consecutively. Pulling in a total of 602 complaints between 2011 and 2013. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done about the mentality of animal abusers but there are laws in place to serve justice. Under the Animal Care and Protection Act general cruelty offences face a maximum penalty of $227,700 or 3 years imprisonment. So speak for those that cannot, if you see or know of animal abuse call RSPCA on their 24hr emergency line 1300 264 625. Or if you have any information regarding this matter call Crime Stoppers on 1800 733 149 or report it directly to a local police station.

$2.8 Million Road Upgrade By Catherine Moore

Moreton Bay Council has invested $2.8 million towards safer roads for Bribie Island. $1 million of which was paid from The Federal Government under the National Road Black Spot program. As many local motorists are aware, the upgrade sits along First Avenue, Goodwin Drive and McMahon Street. The million dollar investment will include a roundabout at Goodwin Drive, a dedicated turning lane into McMahon Street, a central turn lane between these two roads and the through lanes reduced to single lanes

in each direction. There will also be a new road installed between Goodwin Drive and First Avenue, a reduction in the speed limit to 60km, new cycle lanes, pathway connections and pedestrian refuge facilities to assist crossing First Avenue. Lastly, 2 new bus stops will be built near the upcoming roundabout to improve services to Hunter Street. Construction is expected to finish in September and is a part of council’s $130 million pledge to sustaining and improving the Moreton Bay Region’s road system.

Who Answered the Call Community First claims

“WHO ANSWERED THE CALL” is a project managed by Graham Mills of Bribie Island Historical Society Inc. The aim of which is to identify those people who lived or were born on or near Bribie Island when they enlisted in WW1 and WW2. From a small number to start with (three in WW1) the final outcome of names included 18 local men who enlisted in WW1 and 19 men and women who enlisted in WW2. Two plaques honouring these people will be unveiled at Bongaree Rememberance Park, 50 metres North of Bribie Island Library at 10:00am on July 31 2015. Everybody is welcome. These plaques honour all those who enlisted to serve the empire and their country.

Design Comp leads search for Commonwealth Games Mascot Local members of Parliament want young people from the Caboolture and Bribie Island areas to get creative and come up with a mascot design for the 2018 Commonwealth Games The Minister for the Commonwealth Games today launched a competition to find the official mascot the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018). “All Australians can enter the competition, but I would love to see a young person from our community come up with a winning design,” said Member for Pumicestone Rick Williams “To make it fairer and easier for everyone, we are asking each applicant to submit a hand-drawn design.” “These are Queensland’s games and I would love to see a young person from Deception Bay or Rothwell come up with the winning mascot design for our games”, said Member for

Morayfield Mark Ryan. “The competition entry forms can be downloaded at www.gc2018/mascot,” said Member for Murrumba Chris Whiting A judging panel will select the winning design. The panel will include an athlete, an Australian Commonwealth Games Association (ACGA) representative, a child psychologist, a local Indigenous representative, a parent, an animated character development expert, and representatives Arts Queensland and the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC). The winner will be announced when the official mascot is launched in early 2016. The winner will receive 4 tickets to the Opening Ceremony plus flights and accommodation. The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will take place from 4 to 15 April 2018.

Facelift for Bribie Bridge Bribie Island Bridge is looking better than ever following a $630,000 facelift and the addition of six new pedestrian passing bays. The 51-year-old-bridge spans 835 metres across the Pumicestone Passage. Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the new passing bays would enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists on the popular bridge. “It’s a great place for residents and visitors to take in a bit of sightseeing and throw in a line.”

Member for Pumicestone Rick Williams said the new passing bays would make the bridge more userfriendly for cyclists and pedestrians. “It’s a great way to while away the hours on a weekend and to take in all that the Pumicestone Passage has to offer. “The bridge upgrade has been underway since February and I thank motorists and local residents for their patience while the works were being carried out.”

Council Budget is an Election Budget

The President of Your Community First, Peter Houston, who attended the Budget presentation at the Pine Rivers Council Offices, has described the Budget presented as “An Election Budget” the Council Elections will be in March 2016. “Because this Council is so big, at this stage only the Councillors know some of the detail, the rest is held by the officers of the MBRC. One can really say the Rate increase of 1.8% with the CPI at 1.7% this obviously is buttering the Community up for an election. It seems the Rail project is getting another $20 Million. The new University which is to be on the Petrie Paper Mill site got a mention, but with all aspects of this SECRET both my group and the Community of Petrie have been kept in the dark on this. Let’s face it, if it is going to be critical of the Council at all. They have ‘in camera’ or confidential meeting”, Dr. Houston said, “and kick the press and public out”. ‘It seems the Redcliffe Hockey Club got a mention. And the Budget does allow for them to get a new field at over a Million dollars. One can mention the fact here that Cr. Sutherland is Patron of this club. The Community of the three areas has largely been kept in the dark ay this stage with nothing said about the exceptional price of Water and Sewerage or the control of it. They own all the assets that UnityWater

controls and get paid an annual premium for this. With the Press gallery getting a hand out and the public getting none except the Agenda, as I said, the Community has been kept in the dark on this one.” Dr. Houston said “It seems Cr Miller as Finance Chair has read some of our Website Policies and mentioned again, they weren’t going to give any discount for early payment etc. I urge anyone fed up with the antics of this current Council to put themselves forward as a YCF Candidate in this coming election.” Dr. Houston said.

If I Were a Shadow lf I were but a shadow, I’d pray that I were thine my cup of joy would overflow with you forever mine, I’d be with you at the break of day as you stirred upon your bed, we’d be as one as you went to lay to rest your weary head. As we walked amongst the flowers, the blooms would open wide and envy me the hours that I were by your side; we’d hear the birds sweet chorus as we went strolling by, their melodies so joyous, as if angels sang from high. At times when days were dim and bleak my presence being unclear l’d sorrow that I could not speak to whisper “I am near”; I’d never leave your side nor show the ravages of time if I were but a shadow and were forever thine. © Harold Meston 1993

Solar Supply Charge Sense We were one of the early installers of Solar Panels (June 2011) and not only receive 44c FIT (Feed In Tariff) from the Government but also receive and extra 6c from AGL in addition to about a 10% discount because we are old. We agree that this level of FIT is not warranted but the State Government is gradually drawing it back through the Supply Charge which has risen nearly 300% in the last four years from about $11 per quarter to nearly $80 per quarter, that is not the answer either. The people we feel sorry for are those who installed the panels following the election of the LNP Govt when the FIT was reduced to 8c per kWh and is slowly being reduced further and is now about 6.3c per kWh and they are also paying the exorbitant Supply Charge. Both FIT rates are wrong and the market is shrinking as a result. The correct FIT should be the same rate as that being charged for peak period supply from the grid (about 25c per kWh) and owners of solar panels should receive that rate as a FIT but should not be charged a Supply Charge (or at least a much lower such

charge). We would cheerfully surrender the high FIT which we receive, in exchange for such a charging regimen. When the Brou Ha Ha was brewing (sorry) over the proposed leasing by the State Govt of the power generating plants, one eminent person was heard to remark: “Who in their right mind believes that we will still be using poles and wires in 99 years?” A modicum of common sense would see that the promotion of solar panels for domestic consumption would be more cost effective now and into the future. Particularly now that there is a reliable and compact battery storage (Lithium Polymer) facility for the domestic user it should be possible for that user to disconnect from the grid completely. High voltage power generation would always be necessary for industrial purposes. As Professor Ian Plimer has said: “You cannot make even a stainless steel teaspoon with Solar or Wind Power”. Kal Ma Kuta I was very interested in Ted Clayton’s letter about “Kal Ma Kuta. My Grandfather, John Bestmann and all the Bestmann family knew her very well. So well that Grandad handed on stories about her strong swimming and rescues of unfortunate people who got into difficulties to his family. So I grew up familiar with these. My father, Roy Bestmann, his sisters Daisy, Rosalind “Trix”, and Beryl knew all about this wonderful lady. The first teacher at Clark’s School where Spinnaker Sound is today, was Miss Leila Eustance who became, Mrs Harry Bestmann; another teacher was Miss Gertude Lang and last Mr. George Saville Moss. The Bestmann children were his grandchildren (their mother was his daughter). Also Kal Ma Kuta’s grandson, Fred Palin married into the Bestmann family. Dining with Dogs a Delight Australia is well out of step with many European countries when it comes to treatment of dogs. On a recent trip through Northern Europe we noticed

Page 6

dogs everywhere, especially in cafes with their owners. We were surprised to see them walking round shopping malls and in and out of the shops – no distressed dogs tied up outside there. Our biggest delight came when we met friends for dinner at a very nice restaurant on the banks of Lake Zurich. The dog (very large shaggy black one) jumped out of the car and came with us. Inside we were shown to our table, and the dog, who obviously knew the drill, ran underneath the table. There was a bed and a bowl of water waiting for him, and he sat there – bored – until we were ready to leave! I personally would welcome a far more tolerant attitude to dogs – I believe the more stimulation they have, the better behaved they are. Then we could work on our attitudes to people! Alex Ferguson (Mrs)

Dogs Breakfast Well, what a provocative suggestion Deanne Scanlan promotes (Allowing dogs on airlines & in restaurants/ hotels). Like Ms Scanlan, I have been fortunate enough to experience extensive overseas travel and must admit my family was absolutely put off a unique French restaurant when we saw a large dog sitting at the table next to us, dogs in our hotel lifts and so on. Ruff, Ruff, not happy Jan. Surely people can have a night out or a holiday without being compelled to take their animals with them everywhere. Bare in mind that dog tolerance in restaurants etc., would only be the thin edge of the wedge and here in this already over tolerant society, can you then just imagine someone applying to that Human Rights commissioner (yes, that one) to have “dogs” replaced with “pets”. Just think about the bloke with the “pet” snake, or the “pet” duck sitting on their lap in the planes middle seat next to you! Sounds over the top – not at all, once the precedent is set. Now this doesn’t apply to all dog owners, but It’s always amazed me how many owners can’t understand , (or don’t simply want to) that the rest of us won’t have the same affection towards their animals, nor share the same tolerance to lack of hygiene, pet hair loss and their adverse attitude to community “dogs must be kept on leash” rules. I always thought dogs were animals (?) and they have their place in society, but not in airlines, restaurants or hotel rooms, and please, keep them on their leash. And before you jump to conclusions, I have had my share of dogs and other pets in the past. Thank you, Tom O’Dea, Bongaree

U3A will remain active and effective throughout these changes and by next year U3A will be able to offer a significant increase in class numbers, subject offerings and student enrolments. Maritime Safety Military Cadets Celebrates 1st Birthday! On Friday 19th June, 2015 I had the pleasure to join the Maritime Safety Military Cadets in celebrating their 1st birthday. After only 12 months service they have a membership of over 50 youth and are branching out into our schools. This is an inspiring success story for this group that provides a positive outlet for our young people. During the Celebrations Cadet Jacob Miller volunteered his hair to raise funds for the “Returned Soldiers’ halfway house” at Burpengary, and while Rick was a bit cautious starting the haircut, Jenna from Voices Choral did not have to be asked twice to take up the hair shears. Through the unselfish act by Cadet Miller they raised over $500! Well done! To find out more contact Mick on 0431 012 488 or Roz on 0415 745 747.

On Saturday 20th June, Cheryl and I had a fantastic night with the charming women and men of the Bribie Island Lions club, who have been supporting our community for 45 years. Sue Lister became a “Melvin Jones Fellow”, George West is a member of the board, Linda West was endorsed as “Lion of the year” and Desley Jozefowski received a community service excellence award. Well done all! It was a real eye-opener for me to hear firsthand about the work these guys do here and overseas. Founded by Melvin Jones in 1917 after posing the question, “What if people put their talents to work, improving their communities?” The Lions Club went international in 1920 and then in 1925 helen keller challenged the Lions to become, “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.” In 1990 the Lions Club launched their SightFirst campaign and have raised $346 million for this initiative! Moreton Bay Regional Plan Out From 1 July The Moreton Bay Regional Plan has been signed off by the State Government so the council’s new draft planning scheme will proceed to the public notification stage subject to state planning conditions. This had been a very contentious issue that was not managed well under the previous government. So there will be a proper and extensive public consultation period to ensure the public has the opportunity to have their say from 1 July 2015.

Taxi Anyone?

A resident of Bribie Island since 1974, George Goold of Bribie Island Taxi’s was born in Tasmania in a little country farming town called Riana in 1935. Some months ago George happened to be at a function and ran into a lady that recognised him from her early days as a child. She enquired, low and behold it was George Goold her old school mate from when they were 10 years old. They had not seen each other for 70 years! So George and his wife Sally invited them up to Bribie Island for his 80th birthday party held on Saturday 4th July where 130 guests attended and they were looked after magnificently. The lady in question was Laurel Ling who then became Mrs Laurel Close. We wanted to say a big belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY! To George from the Bribie Islander. Looking good for 80 George! Looks like everyone had a great time.

The Clone Wars

These days, global connections are easier than ever to make with the world of the web at our fingertips. We don’t have to travel like we used to gather knowledge and inspiration; Bali is just one click away! And as a result we have raised a culture that allows access to diversity in the many forms of expression whether that is through fashion, music and entertainment, hobbies or lifestyle. But is seems that even with almost unlimited stimuli from around the world we comfortably choose conformity.

For most of us, it’s easy to be yourself when you’re with familiar people; people like your family. You can wear the daggiest most mismatched apparel and your folk still think you’re beautiful (though that’s not to say you become an easy target for the quick witted aka: beloved siblings). You can sing that one line in the song you kind of know from the radio over and over, you can be free to be unbathed and bed-headed and even drink the leftover milk straight from the bowl from the cereal you just demolished in a semi-Neanderthal manner. Maybe that’s tame in your household, maybe it would be going

too bogan for others but the point is you can be completely natural and feel unjudged. I admit though, some of those things we reserve for la maison should not be seen on the streets but I love it when I see glimpses of this freedom in public places. Several times have I been out shopping and have come across some groovy grannies singing along to the song on the shop speakers or older gentlemen dressed in the smartest of attire, suspenders and all. Or have you noticed whenever there’s music playing at an event of any kind the first to dance are always the little children! These folk are just being their passionate fun-loving selves and are free to enjoy the moment without hesitation. But somewhere in between those age groups something gets a bit complicated. I don’t know, maybe it’s the hormones but we get to a certain age and become… self-conscious. It’s real party pooper selfconsciousness. It stops you having fun, it stops you being who you were made to be and it stops you dancing

like the little children, literally. I know because, if there’s something I love to do its dance. It makes you feel happy and alive. But when you start feeling self-conscious and begin to worry about how you look you forsake the moment of enjoyment. For example, I’ve only been to a few venues where there are crowds of people dancing and it’s really fun. However, you start to notice that it actually takes guts to dance the way you actually want to. Deep down everyone really does want to bust out but we have a fear of looking different because we’ve associated different with weird. You want to know what another word for different is? Diverse. Diversity is the colour of life. But I really do understand how intimidating it is to break free. When you are faced with the option of fitting in and being comfortable or standing out and feeling utterly vulnerable it seems so much easier to pick comfort. Yeah we feel relief and we feel safe at first but after a while you feel regret. Regret because it saddens our spirits when we can’t be ourselves and when we can’t express our true colours. Regret because we’ve missed an opportunity. But breaking free is just that, you are literally breaking into freedom when you let go of self consciousness and I can tell you that

when you do decide to go for it, you won’t regret that! You will feel proud of yourself and grow stronger. You won’t know what you’re capable of if you just fit into a mold and once you get out of the mold, even your regrets can be used for good. I heard a great quote the other day that said, “Don’t mourn over bad decisions, overcome them with good ones”. It’s when we address the attitude of ‘I have to look a certain way’ or ‘dance a certain way’ or ‘act a certain way’ and ask yourself, wait who said so, that we become free. Unless we have a firm grip on our core values, we grow into a certain way of thinking. Moreover, we’re bought into a way of thinking that embodies itself in a false outward image, and then deny ourselves the capacity to be creative thinkers. This I believe crushes our ability to find what our true source of health and happiness is: spirit, soul and body. And what we have left after our character is taken away from us is an army of clones at war against each other. So perhaps instead of comparing ourselves to each other, we could start to admire the different qualities in each one of us. Why judge each other all on someone else’s tailor-made quality? For unity in diversity is a wonderful thing. ‘Like us on Facebook for updates, Special Offers and our FASHION PARADE dates!’ Support Your Local Business, We Need You! :-)

Common Problems In Dogs Barking – Part One By Yvonne Bishop

Barking is probably the most common complaint to Councils. Some people fail to realise that barking is a natural, normal behaviour in dogs and it is unrealistic to expect dogs to never bark. It would be like expecting a person never to speak. Why do dogs bark? Since domestication of wild dogs we have selectively bred them to bark. Dogs that were used to guard stock or property sounded the alarm by barking. Dogs used for hunting eg. Beagles were expected to bark when they picked up the scent. Reasons for barking Before attempting to change the behaviour from a barking dog to a quiet dog, you need to work out why the dog is barking. Once you know the reason then you can find a solution. 1. Territorial – most dogs bark at passer bys with or without a dog. This is the most common and natural behaviour. Once the person has walked pass your property the dog stops. Personally I think this is a good idea because it warns people especially if it’s a would-be thief sussing out homes in the area. If you live on a busy thoroughfare that may cause the dog to bark all day long then one easy and effective solution can be to block their view to the front road or deny access to the front yard. 2. Seeking Attention – a lot of dogs has found an easy solution to getting their owner’s attention by barking at them. They may bark when owner comes home or to solicit a pat or game. Nearly all the time

Pet Care

by Dr Jackie the Vet

Creaking Joints

Our pets suffer more in the cold weather with arthritis. They are slower to get up, stiff, sometimes limp, and become grouchy. They may even not want to walk so far, which should make you immediately suspicious as our pets love their walks. Sometimes it is due to old injuries or just wear-and-tear. Older pets nearly all develop some arthritis as the joints wear out. Luckily, arthritis is a treatable condition. Keeping your pet warm helps, as does feeding a joint supplement. There are several prescription medicines which help arthritis a lot, including a series of injections promoting joint fluid production. These are highly effective and lead the way in treating arthritis. As far as I am aware, human medicine has nothing similar, so in some ways it really is a dog’s life! Phone Dr Jackie to book an appointment to decide on the best arthritis treatment for your pet. Phone 0400 699 704.

the dog wins. Depending on our mood and what we’re doing at the time we either pat or play with the dog or we yell at them to leave us alone. Either way we have given our dog attention. Again, an easy solution is to ignore the dog at all times when barking at you. Ignoring the dog means not to give eye contact, do not speak or touch the dog. Then when the dog is quiet you can pat or play with the dog. For it to work you have to be 100% consistent. He will soon learn that it is more rewarding to approach his owner in a quiet, calm manner. I will continue with more common reasons in the next issue. Happy training! If you have any questions and would like to know when classes are on, please contact Yvonne 0416102071.

The centre holds holds various activities and events aimed to promote independence and assistance for those that choose to live at home. Activities include bingo, Wii, Nintendo, knitting groups, floor golf, crafts, exercise, music, drama, dance and table bowls. Whales in Woorim for Winter

Bribie residents and visitors wanting to go whale watching this winter can save their money and catch a glimpse via boat or foot for free.

As winter sets in so does the migration of the humpback whales from the Antarctic to the warm waters of Queensland. The Moreton Bay region has been acknowledged as a travelling route for these creatures with the beaches of Bribie Island providing a lesser known viewing point. Resident Debra Wiskar spotted a pod of whales from Woorim’s 4WD beach in winter 2013.

“When you looked east towards Moreton but further north than that, whales were in close and further out as well, we watched for ages,” Mrs Wiskar said. “You don’t need to spend money to go whale watching,” she said. Locals Carly and Darryl Grant have been lucky enough to see the whales several times from Woorim shore. “We’ve seen them from the look out and from the main beach, Boyd Street,” Mrs Grant said. “Apparently you can see them from the Surf Club too,” she said. The view is not bad for a free show either.

“We’ve seen some just cruising past, maybe 100-300 metres out,” Mrs Grant said. “One time with the breaching about 300m out, that happened a few times,” she said. “We’ve found August is best for whale spotting.” But Bribie residents may have early viewings. Local man Craig Freestone said he saw a couple of humpback whales north of Moreton Island whilst fishing in early June. “One sat deep under the boat

singing, the boat acted like a speaker so you could hear him or her” Mr Freestone said. “I’ve seen them out there before,” he said. Bribie Island has an abundance of wildlife that can be seen not only on land but also at sea. Whilst dolphins have been a common neighbour for locals, these gentle giants are a relatively new sight. So add whale watching to your list of free things to do this winter on Bribie Island. By Catherine Moore.

Common Assassin Bug Pristhesancus plagipennis

Humpback Whale breaching.

Conscious Living

There are about 300 species of Assassin bugs in Australia. The common or bee-killer assassin bugs are common, predatory bugs found on Bribie Island. They are 25 mm in length and one of their favourite foods is the honey bee, but they also feed on other insects. They lie stealthily amongst the foliage and ambush their prey from behind. Then they use their very strong, curved proboscis or rostrum to impale and immobilise. When their victim is disabled they inject a very potent secretion which dissolves the body contents. This soup is then sucked through the straw-like proboscis. They prefer softer bodied insects and when their meal is finished only the shell remains. Their legs are very long and this helps

them when they attack. Very rarely will they bite a human but if accidently provoked can give a very painful bite. They use their proboscis to inject the same venom used to dissolve internal tissues of insects. The bite is not harmful but the pain may last for a few days. The neck separating the head and thorax is quite long. They lay 40 to 80 red eggs which hatch in about 2 weeks into red spider-like babies. Cotton growers find the assassin bug very useful as it feeds on the insects which are a pest to the cotton crop. The assassin bug in the photograph was resting for a lengthy period on a milkweed in my garden. Article and pics by Marj Webber

Satya: Truth

This monTh we explore the second Yama on the philosophical path of Yoga - satya, which means truth.

surely it is easy to know what is true or what is untrue? however, the difficulty lies in how we perceive truth. one of the ways we perceive reality and thus come up with our version of the truth is by using our sense perception to guide us and so if our sense perception is variable then we may each infer a different reality. A physiological example is that each of us may ‘see’ the same colour differently due to the uniqueness of our eye retina. Another example is we may behold what we ‘see’ as smoke on the horizon, as we often do here on Bribie looking to the mainland and we may then interpret that to mean there is a fire, however upon coming closer to the source we find it is just a dust storm or a cloud. This shows us that the way our minds compute sensory information is also based on individual past experiences of what we may expect to be true.

know truth, live in truth and hold a space for the light of truth to shine for others. in its absolute form, truth will always serve the highest good of all and never cause harm (in alignment with Ahimsa/non-violence from last article).

if we simplify our lives and take time for quiet reflection and meditation, then peace and joy will have room to flourish and we’ll create an environment where intuition can be heard and truth may be realised.

Bribie Island Photography Club The judge for this month was our own John Cupper who has given us all a thorough critique on our work. John not only verbally critiques the photographs but also demonstrates his suggestions so that we can see what he is talking about. Vince Bowser ran a video introducing us to the wonders of Lightroom and Ron Le Huray showed us a slideshow on Christchurch as it is today. The theme for this month was Nature, which was won by Vince Bowser with his magnificent shot of a lion titled “Thinking about Food”. Gordon Bentzen won the Mono Projected Image with “Village Life”. Marj Webber was first with a score of 10, with her “Serenity” in the Open Colour Print. Gail Goodair took out firsts in the Open Colour Projected Image and the Mono Print with “Waiting” and “Room with a View” Our meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month at the Arts Centre in the Boardroom at 7 pm. The entrance is at the back of the building. Our next meeting will be held on 27th July. Out annual fees are $35 and we pay $3 at each meeting we attend. New members are very welcome. The Bribie Winelander Brandy When thinking of Brandy many consider France to be the benchmark of quality around the world with such titles as Cognac and Armagnac however here in Australia is a great tradition of Brandy making which rivals anywhere in the world. The word Brandy comes from the Dutch brandewijn or burned wine and thirty years or so ago every large winery in Australia used to make Brandy as a by-product of wine production. As long ago as 1913 Chateau Tanunda claimed to have built the most pretentious Brandy Distillery and Winery in the Southern Hemisphere and that each season 500,000 gallons of wine were distilled for Brandy. At this time brandy was regarded as a quasi-medicinal pick-me-up and all brandy producers produced and labelled “hospital brandy” at a relatively low retail cost and was supplied to many of Australia’s hospitals. Moving forward to today and whilst “hospital brandy” has disappeared off the shelves several large wineries continue to produce high quality brandy even though the market has diminished considerably in recent years. The Family Owned Wine Company Angove’s is the leader in producing high quality Australian brandy and maintains in excess of 5,000 barrels

of maturing brandy at their Renmark Winery in South Australia. From these barrels Angove’s produce a series of styles ranging from the commercial St. Agnes 3 star style that spends a minimum of two years in barrels by Australian Law to their seven star St. Agnes X.O. that contains a proportion of 30 year old material with a minimum age of ten years, in fact they are probably the only winery in Australia that can produce a brandy of this style. It cannot be called Cognac or Armagnac as these are regions of France but for quality, price and presentation the St. Agnes 7 star X.O. is up there with the very best produced anywhere in the world having won the award for being the best in the world three times at European shows and have won trophies at other shows around the world. Brandy sales were seriously affected when the government put duty on the product some years ago which adds around $20 to every bottle and unfortunately other spirits have been marketed towards the younger generation such as bourbon, vodka, rum and tequila very successfully and brandy is seen as an older persons drink, but with the resurgence in cocktails brandy could still make a comeback. Another wine style produced by several wineries is commonly known as dessert wine which can be late harvested or “noble botrytis” wines. Late harvested wines have been left on the vines longer and develop a higher sugar content and both styles are made from white wine grapes such as Riesling, Semillon, Gewurztraminer, and Sauvignon Blanc. Botrytis affected

Mission Point

The book “Mission Point” subtitled “Bribie Island Aboriginal Mission 1890-92”, tells the story of the second aboriginal mission established on Bribie Island for Moreton Bay aboriginals. However, native superstition worked strongly against the location at Bribie Island. Newspapers of the time, described it as “adverse heredity superstition”. Why were the Moreton Bay aboriginals so scared of Bribie Island? Similar superstition, did not apply to the Myora Mission on North Stradbroke Island (1892-1942) or the Cherbourg mission (established 1900). Those missions were successful and today honour their past in their own museums that are proudly open to the public.

wines on the other hand are grapes that are exposed to a fungus, botrytis camera, which forms on the grapes in moist conditions. If the weather stays wet it will destroy the grapes but if exposed to drier conditions the fungus reduces the water in the grape turning the grape to a raisin which produces a fine wine with concentrated sweetness, but because you cannot make a lot of wine from the withered grapes they tend to be more expensive and usually come in 375ml bottles. Although sales of dessert wines are not huge many wineries like to make them as it completes the range and also shows the skills of the winemaker. The most famous of these wines is Chateau d’Yquem which hails from Sauternes in the Gironde region in Bordeaux in France. The wine is made from equal parts of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, and the wines are known for their longevity, a 1811 vintage was scored a perfect 100 points by Robert Parker when tasted in 1996. After the oil crisis of 1973 demand fell for the wine and it was possible to buy a bottle for around 35 francs, after 1980 prices began to rise and in 2006 a vertical tasting (containing each vintage from 1860-2003) was sold by The Antique Wine Company in London for $1.5 million and in 2011 an 1811 bottle sold for $75,000 and became the most expensive bottle of white wine ever sold. In Australia our most prestigious botrytis wine is made by De Bortoli and was first created by Darren De Bortoli in 1982, it has gone onto win over 130 trophies and 400 gold medals since

We look briefly at the natives’ superstition and the Queensland Government appointing a great number of white people with authority to remove Aboriginal people onto and between reserves. To take aboriginal children from parents, place them in dormitories, reserves, missions, forbid speech in their native tongue and when they turned fourteen years of age put them out to white persons as household servants or farm hands at a reduced rate of pay. The Australian constitution declared Aboriginal people were not counted in any census, denied them citizenship and all legal rights. Australia prohibited aborigines volunteering for the armed services throughout World War 1, a marked contrast to New Zealand’s Treaty of Waitangi that granted full citizenship rights to Maori people as early as 1840. then. Although being called a dessert wine I think it is best drank with blue cheese, Gorgonzola, Shropshire Blue and Stilton are perfect. Last month we showcased ports but of course we also produce outstanding Muscats, Tokays and Sherries. To make these wines the grapes have to ripen naturally by leaving the grapes longer on the vines for extra sweetness, however in Europe it is legal to add grape sugar which is known as Chaptalization but not in Australia, and are then fortified with brandy. Sherry is traditionally made from Palomino grapes and classified into various styles, Fino (dry) Amontillado (sweet) and Oloroso (cream) and production utilises the dynamic method we looked at last month known as The Solera system. Muscat and Tokay styles are made from the Red Frontignac variety and Muscadelle respectively and to make a traditional Australian Muscat or Tokay the fruit has to be picked at a much higher sugar level or baume and after picking the fruit is crushed and allowed to ferment for about 24 hours before pressing and fortifying. Australian fortified wines are made from blending from different vintages to achieve the quality required and below are some outstanding examples to look for, almost anything from Rutherglen in Victoria is worth trying. of Richard Martin, who successfully joined the AIF on 17th December 1914, by falsely declaring on his attestation papers that he was born in Dunedin, New Zealand. He served at Gallipoli, Egypt, Belgium, and France until his death in action on 28 March 1918. The book sells for $11.95 at Bribie Nextra Newsagency and Bribie Island Arts Centre.

Dining out

with Barry Noyce

A Gourmet Revolution – A Gastronomical Experience...

“KAI Cafe & Restaurant”, also known to us as Kai Katering, has taken our local Dining Out expectations to yet another level of fine cuisine. Owners, Cameron and Rochelle Hogg, have re-established the restaurant within the Waterways Motel complex with such driving enthusiasm you can’t but drool over the menu several times before coming to a decision, while the patient waitress stands with pen and pad poised. On this occasion I had the pleasure of six friends joining me for lunch, all with insatiable appetites and lovers of experiencing food that may be tantalizing to their palate. This was obvious with the two servings of “Confit Duck Ravioli”, homemade pasta served in a Wild Mushroom Ragout. As one guest commented, who had never had Duck, how this exquisite taste can be captured in one serving without looking like a duck!

Duck Ravioli

Another all-time favourite is the Barramundi but in this fine restaurant it’s a Pan Roasted Fillet served, crispy skin up, on a warm salad of Broccolini; Red Onion; Mixed Tomatoes; a light Vinaigrette and topped with very more-ish sweet potato crisps. Not being a New Zealander, but having a number of such friends, one learns of culinary terminologies frequently. That being “Kumara” - hand cut chips and served in a medley of Kipfler; Parsnip; Beetroot and Spinach accompanied by Cider Braised Pork Belly with an Apple & Cherry Chutney. And yes, the Chef has topped this dish with a piece of crispy skin crackling that will be the first to disappear. One can’t help but to enquire of another friend’s taste when lunching, as was the selection of “Chicken Breast Supreme” and enjoyed to “the bone”. This appetizing dish is wrapped in bacon and served with a combination of semi-dried tomato; baby spinach and feta cheese along with chat potatoes and a Hollandaise sauce. Certainly a poultry lovers’ delight. Not since being in the U.S.A.; Canada or that of my recently departed

This dish is not your usual Clam Chowder served in a Sourdough but a fullbodied Classic Seafood Chowder abundant with prawns; Sea Scallops; Mussels; Squid and Barramundi all poached in a thick seafood broth and generously served with crusty bread and if you crave a little more bread for dipping, then why not ask. Quite honestly, while enjoying this exceptional Chowder, you really don’t like the idea of seeing that last spoonful at the bottom of the bowl.

A couple of ditties from Ovid as far back as 1 B.C. and things haven’t changed! Wine gives courage and makes man apt for passion But on the other hand Wine prepares the heart for love unless you take too much Whilst Shakespear’s Porter in Macbeth has similar thoughts It provokes the desire but takes away the performance Is there a lesson to be learnt from these I wonder?

Okay, you maybe be thinking, is there ever a “down side”. Well, rarely of course with any eatery, but it is always up to the individual to pass on any constructive criticism or compliment to the Owner &/or Chef in a discreet and

courteous manner. My philosophy has always been, would you be prepared to cook several different main courses, serve them simultaneously, and not expect a simple request, such as extra crusty bread or salad dressing? “KAI Cafe & Restaurant” is Fully Licensed along with their expertise, credentials, ambiance and knowledge of full-filling the demands that could be of an inner city restaurant and yet we have this innovative cuisine right here on our very own doorstep. The restaurant also offers an appetizing Breakfast and Lunch from 9.30am, Wednesday to Saturday, with Dinner until late. Lighter Snacks are available which include Smoked Salmon on Corn Fritters; Goat’s Cheese Tart and a Vegetarian Antipasto, just to mention a few, to enjoy over an Espresso Coffee or a Light Beverage.

Ian Fairweather

By Barry Clark

After a lifetime of travel and adventure, in 1953 at the age of 62, this world famous artist came to live in isolation in a grass hut inland from here. He created some of his finest paintings in this hut over the next 21 years until his death in 1974. Soon after his birth in Scotland in 1891, Ian Fairweather’s military family departed for India leaving him in the care of relatives. He did not see them again for 8 years. This may have set the pattern set for his solitary, independent, questing life, often spent in extreme poverty but always exploring his extraordinary artistic abilities. He spent his last 21 years on Bribie Island in peace and creativity.

disappointing. He was in India during World War 2, and once again served in the British Army and afterwards returned to Australia.and lived in a boat hull in Darwin. From Darwin he made an amazing, tortuous and largely inexplicable voyage , in which he nearly lost his life while attempting to reach Indonesia in a leaky, home-made raft. His raft adventure seemed to be some sort of catalyst. Sent back to England, he eventually returned to Australia, constantly searching for the appropriate solitude for his creative genius. In 1953, at the age of 62, he finally discovered peace on Bribie Island and remained

here until his death in 1974. Ian Fairweather’s Life on Bribie Island On Bribie Island Ian Fairweather settled in a grass hut in the bush, lit only by hurricane lamps and sharing his meagre rations with the local wildlife. Using very basic paints and canvas, or cardboard from the local tip, he created many hundreds of wonderful paintings… the fame of which did not seem to interest him. He sent his works away to be sold to dealers, art galleries and collectors around the world. These were always much sought after, but Fairweather was happy to just enjoy his creative isolation, drawing upon the rich experiences of his life. By the 1960’s his creative genius was being recognized around the world, and it became more difficult for him to maintain his creative solitude. His fame and potential fortune had little impact on him, or the residents of Bribie Island who observed glimpses of this enigmatic character, as he went about his simple life among them. His inner feelings are reflected in his famous statement:

Ian Fairweather outside his grass hut.

Fairweather’s Search for Inner Peace After World War 1, during which he was captured and escaped more than once, he attended the Slade School of Art. He traveled extensively and went to China, learnt the language and translated Chinese works. After living andpainting in Shanghai he travelled on to Bali where he found art and culture were as one. He eventually reached Melbourne in 1934 but found the art scene there

Using very basic paints and canvas, or cardboard from the local tip, Ian created many hundreds of wonderful paintings.

“There may be better places than the sunset strip of Bribie Island… but it’s good enough for me.” The Council became increasingly concerned about his health and living conditions and to improve this they built him a small fibro house next to the grass hut. He was always more comfortable in the grass hut but used the house to store paintings and materials. After his death the council burned his grass hut, and the small house was relocated into the garden of Coungeau House, Banya Street. A stone memorial marks the site of his hut in Ian Fairweather Park on the corner of First Avenue and Hunter Street.

Take a Walking Tour Through Historic Bongaree 1. Record Rainfall. The greatest daily rainfall officially recorded anywhere in Australia fell near Pumicestone Passage on 3rd February 1893. After 3 weeks of continuous rain, a record total of 907mm was recorded at Beerwah by Inigo Jones, in this one 24 hour period. 2. South Esplanade. From the 1920s many large guest houses operated along

here. Proprietors met the “excursion ships” and carried guests’ luggage over creeks and sand tracks, offering the attraction of specialty food and entertainment. 3. Campbell’s Store. In the 1890s Joe Campbell was an oysterman in the Passage. In the 1930s his son Reg had a General Store & Boat Shed by this creek, when it was much larger and used as a boat harbour by campers and dugong fishermen. 4. Camping Grounds. In the 1920s there were few shops, no services, and less than 100 permanent residents. Many thousands came every week by ship from Brisbane and pitched their tents here to enjoy cheap and healthy holidays. 5. Bribie Island Heritage. “Bribie Island is one of the meanest pieces of country in Australia . . . a howling desert of tea-tree swamps, rank aquatic vegetation and unimaginable cussedness”. Archibald Meston (1891) – Explorer, Author and Politician. 6. Ian Fairweather. After a lifetime of travel and adventure, in 1953 at the age of 62, this world famous artist came to live in isolation in a grass hut inland from here. He created some of his finest paintings in this hut over the next 21 years until his death in 1974. 7. First Shop. A.H. “Artie” Bestmann kept bees and dairy cattle here from 1903. Alfred Hall, a Brisbane grocer, built a

house next door in 1913 and together they provided basic goods to visitors from a spare room. In 1921 they built the “Hall and Bestmann Store: on this corner. 8. Bribie Island Heritage. “It might not be too much to claim, Pumicestone Passage and Bribie Island contain more history, written and unwritten, than any other place in Queensland”. Stan Tutt (1981) – Sunshine Coast Historian. 9. First Avenue. Originally named Campbell Rd., for the Director of the Tug Company who had the road built from Bongaree to Woorim in 1923. It was planned to be a four lane road and steam tramway but this did not eventuate although initially it was a toll road. 10. Fishing Records. “Bribie Jetty and its environs must be the most remarkable fishing place in Australia. More black groper have been caught here than any other spot in Australia. A man known as the “Groper King” caught many over 500 lbs”. Ted Shields (1947) - Fisherman and Barge Owner. 11. Welsby Parade. This road named for Thomas Welsby, Brisbane historian, sportsman and author, who in 1937 at the age of 80, wrote the book “Bribie the Basket Maker” and thus created a legend about the Island and its name. 12. Bribie Island Wartime. Bribie Island and Toorbul Point (now Sandstone Point) were major training based for Navy and Army Forces during World War 2. Many

military structures are still visible along the Ocean Beach and a small arms store can be seen across the road. 13. First Car. In 1918 A.H. “Artie” Bestmann drove the first car, a 1914 Talbot, to Bongaree, with a young Ian Hall as his passenger. They did the 2 day drive from Brisbane along beach and bush tracks, and then by barge from Godwin Beach across the Passage. 14. Shirley Creek. Bill Shirley built the first road from the Jetty to Ocean Beach in 1923. He ran a bus service and a guest house and became Bribie’s First Councillor. A Wooden Bridge replaced a single plank walkway here in 1935 as his first council works. 15. Castaway Convicts. In 1823 three Sydney convicts in a small boat were caught in a huge storm which dumped them clost to death on Moreton Island. They walked around Moreton Bay, thinking Sydney was nearby, and were the first white men to live on Bribie Island, being there for many months before recapture. 16. Fish Cannery. A fish canning factory operated near here from 1910 to 1914 owned by Mrs Sarah “Mum” Balls. She also had many hotels and refreshment rooms in Queensland and in 1929 built “Santa Barbara”, one of Brisbane’s grandest homes. https://sites.google.com/site/bribiehistoricalsociety/ Bribie Island Historical Society Inc. – 16 Heritage Plaques – Information Leaflet 2014

Fishing BRIBIE This is Trevor reporting from the Tackle in at Bellara. Well, the weather is here and the fish are here! Large flathead have been caught both sides of the bridge, in the shallows and the swamp. Winter whiting, were getting good backs of those. Good brim, we had a huge size of brim, we had one in the other day that weighed 2.2kg a huge fish, but everyone has been happy there seems to be fish right through the passage and particulary off the banks. Crabs, a non-event at this point in time as some of you may realise, but scale fish by the plenty. Call in to us at Bellara and we’ll tell you more about it. But as for the amateur fisherman, dont hesitate to get out there as theres plenty of brim, flat head and winter whiting available from the shores. Keep an eye out though as Des Hayes went to get his tinnie to get back onto his boat and it was missing, stolen from the side of the VRM ramp. The guys at the VMR found it drifting and brought it back, they stole my ores, jerry can and used all the petrol. So I got my boat and motor back, looks like kids have gone for a joy ride. The VMR said there had been 4 or 5 boats drifting that morning that have come un-tied. Good luck from all at the tackle inn

The Black Swan Cygnus atratus (a swan attired in black)

It would be difficult to mistake the Black Swan for any other bird with its black plumage, extra long, S shaped neck and red bill. The only white is hidden from view most of the time and is only visible during a wing flap or in flight. With a wing span of up to 2 m and weighing up to 9 kg, this is a seriously big bird; in fact it is the largest of the Australian water-fowl. This bird is found almost all over Australia except in very arid regions and in Cape York. It is herbivorous and lives in fresh or salty water stretching its long neck into the water to feed on the vegetation. Sometimes it will feed on grass on the water’s edge. In some areas the Black Swans have become a pest to farmers when they invade their crops. The male bird or ‘cob’ is larger and has a slightly longer neck and bill than the female or ‘pen’. Both birds build, tend the nest and incubate the eggs which are a pale greenish white and can be up to 10 in number. Incubation takes up to 5 or 6 weeks. A large,

untidy nest is made of reeds and water grasses in shallow water. After breeding the birds moult and lose their flight feathers and are unable to fly for about a month. They spend this time floating on calm waters until they can again become airborne. Black swans pair for life and if one of the birds dies the other seldom finds another mate. When the cygnets hatch after about 5 to 6 weeks they are immediately able to swim. For the first 3 weeks they are covered in a soft gray down then brown feathers begin to appear. They

remain with their parents for about 9 months. Most breed before their third year and can live up to 40 years. Some Black Swans are nomadic. When they are moving from dry areas searching for wet locations they mostly fly at night and sometimes in large groups called ‘wedges’. On the ground a group of swans is called a ‘bank’. The first reported sighting of the Black Swan was in 1697 by Willem De Vlamingh when he rowed up the Swan River in Western Australia. He captured two of the birds and took them back to the East Indies where they both died. Feeding the birds, particularly with bread which is not in their dietary requirements can be quite harmful, and cause malnutrition and a reliance on handouts. The adult birds may

become quite aggressive towards their suppliers. Parent swans teach their offspring how to forage for food so young birds could learn bad habits. Human food scraps degrade the water supply. In Western Australia the Black Swan is the emblem, the state bird, and is represented on the state flag. It was a handy food source for the early settlers. On Bribie Island you may hear the musical notes of the Black Swans as they are swimming serenely at Bibimulya Wetlands, and at Buckley’s Hole, where they are sometimes seen accompanied by several cygnets bred on the island. Large banks of swans can often be observed at Toorbul and in Ningi Creek.

July Monthly Horoscope

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th) You start off this month with a full moon which, as it occurs on the first Thursday of the month, could see you undoing all of the hard work you achieved earlier. Try not to fix what isn’t broken, or to mess with what’s not so far been a problem. If not, you could spend the rest of July cleaning up your mistakes, both personally and professionally. News of someone from far away gives you reason to make this your most exciting month for travel. You should be seeing places to stimulate your mind and heart. TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st) Others may say you’re being arrogant, but I just think you’re being super confident and you deserve to be after last month, which saw you taking two steps forward and one step back. You finally get sight of where you want to go with your life and no longer do you worry about how things look, but you think about how you feel. Attempt to make all payments due on time, or contact others to explain why they’re not. GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st) With Pluto and Mars in opposition kick-starting this month you are going to find it hard to know who you can and can’t trust. Take each day slowly Gemini. You seem to be in a rush due to the decisions and events which have occurred in the lives of those close to you. Speaking from the heart between the 11th and 18th can help you fine tune relationships to your advantage. You’re more comfortable in your own skin from these dates and others may comment on how much more mature you seem CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd) Act on fact, not fiction or you are going to end up looking and feeling rather silly. Linking your past and present together in your career is the key to success and happiness this summer. You and your family may butt heads, but that’s because you’re not willing to do what they want. You insist on being your own person. Rightly so. Jealousy in the last week of July is your worst enemy. Rein it in. LEO (July 24th-August 23rd) When was the last time you stopped and asked yourself what it is you want from your life? A long time indeed, according to your stars Leo, as your chart indicates you’ve been making decisions based on what you think others would like from you. You’re never more respected then when you speak from the heart, as your honesty is what has earned you your best friends in life. A legal dealing or paperwork you will need help and advice on can help you move on mentally and physically from something which has clearly held you back. VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd) Make sure that you are keeping those standards nice and high please. You should know by now that you’re what the rest of the zodiac call a high maintenance sign and not a day goes by when you don’t advise others in some shape or form on how they can improve their life. Subtlety is your new best friend, so use it on new influences from the 13th when it’s imperative you create a good first impression. What you think to be fact financially could be fiction. Do your sums and get others to do theirs again before the 15th please. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) Why are you acting like you are in a race Libra? Who told you that you were short on time? You’re just finding it hard to be back in a competitive atmosphere, but relax. You will give a far better impression if you act as if you have everything under your control and are relaxed than if you run around like a headless chicken. New attractions come with some sort of a price, so take these especially slowly and ask questions rather than guessing answers. An attraction in the workplace may not be the bonus it at first seems. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) Your ruling planet Mars knocked the wind out of your sails last month and so you begin July very slowly, but surely. Just make sure that you’re taking life at your pace and not being rushed, as the decisions you now make will shape the next five years of your life. Jealousy from a family member seems to be another problem you have to deal with, but play it down and you’ll take away the power they think they have. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st) Others want what you’re not really willing to give, but instead of leading them on, let them know sooner rather than later what your standards are. If you don’t, you could open a crack in your inner circle which is not easily repaired. Of course, you could always try admitting what is wrong in the work sector of your life. Making that all important decision to initiate change can in fact see you looking ten years younger! CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th) Work and home life are not working in sync and, instead of feeling calm, you are feeling unsettled and stressed. All of this can and will change by the 5th after the full moon at the beginning of the month has helped you air the issues which have been dragging you down and seeing you act so out of character. A new chapter begins in your personal life where you mix with more like minded people and shape a life with laughter and fun, something you haven’t been able to embrace for a while now. AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th) You can’t please everyone all of the time. You’ve certainly learnt that lesson since the beginning of the year haven’t you Aquarius? From the 12th though, Mars starts to help you see how you can better communicate with those who are being difficult and you become an expert at negotiation. Use this gift well to sort out property and financial matters. It can see you with the plans and arrangements you want for once. A younger person needs your guidance which is best given through you listening before you give advice. PISCES (February 20th-March 20th) The stars have made it really hard for you to forget about the past lately, but what you have yet to realise is that the planets just want you to process and acknowledge what went on so that you can build a better future for yourself. Great things await you and travel is a major part of the new chapter you’re entering. Don’t be afraid of the unpredictable, but embrace it. Relationships are highlighted from the 12th when you’re ready, willing and able to ask for what you want and you can get it too.

5 You are in a room with 2 doors leading out. Behind 1 door is a coffer overflowing with jewels and gold, along with an exit. Behind the other door is an enormous, hungry lion that will pounce on anyone opening the door. You do not know which door leads to the treasure and exit, and which door leads to the lion. In the room you are in are 2 individuals. The first is a knight, who always tells the truth, and a knave, who always lies. Both of these individuals know what is behind each door. You do not know which individual is the knight, or which one is the knave. You may ask one of the individuals exactly 1 question. What should you ask in order to be certain that you will open the door with the coffer behind it, instead of the hungry lion?

Committed to Safer Motoring

the engine and transmission are not the only things that rely heavily on your battery. the air bags, the anti-skid brakes, the seat belt tensioners are just a few of the many components that require a good battery. even your radio, GPS and all the gadgets that our cars have today rely heavily on the battery.

Mag Australia that they can confirm the technology works. “This idea can definitely save the lives of many people,” Samsung said. Samsung is currently working with safe driving NGO’s and the government to run tests, meet national protocols and obtain the correct approvals and permits for the release of these vehicles. Until then, drive safe and only pass vehicles when you are certain there is space to do so.

By Catherine Moore

We live in a digital era where technology is used for almost everything and now even overtaking trucks can be added to that list.

How important is your car battery

With the advent of modern technology advancing in everything today including our cars the simple battery has become more and more important and relied upon. Gone are the days when we would push starting our car when the battery died or was flat. the cars today have so much electronics in them that a much more efficient battery system is required.

Big Screens Improving Road Safety

Samsung has released its new ‘Safety Truck’ which features a wireless camera on the grille connected to four screens on the rear of the vehicle which shows a live view of oncoming traffic. The idea is to help cars pass these heavy vehicles on one lane roads safely. Samsung tested the truck in Argentina where there is a high percentage of accidents related to overtaking on single lane roads. But do not get too excited, there is currently no plans to implement these devices. Samsung said to PC

maintained. at BRiBie CaR CaRe we believe we can get the maximum life out of your battery with our BatteRY MaintainCe SCheMe. if you purchase a battery from us and we service your car we will replace your next battery for free. Scott and Adam Bribie Car care 3408 4477

Maintaining your battery is critical. there are many facets of battery naintainence depending on what type of battery is used. Load test, Charge test, discharge test, SG test, SOh test. SOC test are just some of the inspections a battery will require to maximise its life.

Brain training answers 1. SUDUKU

You can expect to get many functional years out of your battery although this depends on many factors like the environment, how much you drive, the quality and type of battery and how well it’s

Finland. After many years studying in the field of astrophysics, the boffin landed a plum job with the National Space Agency, where he became a leading figure in the area of quasars. 4. “That can’t be done!” is the answer. 5. You ask one of the individuals what the other one would say if you asked him which door is holding back the hungry lion and then open this door. 6. Charles committed the terrible crime. Looking at Brian’s statements, one of the statements was a lie and the other was the truth. Therefore it must have been either Charles or Edward. Looking at Derek’s statements, for the same reason, it was either Charles or Brian. Therefore it must have been Charles who committed the crime. Double checking this against the other statements confirms this. 7. Antelope: move it from the end to the beginning, the initial letters will then spell ALPHABET. 8. A SINGLE WORD

Need a tyre that’s

MADE TO LAST? Australia’s largest range of 4WD & SUV tyres made to last!

Y

ou may think that replacing your original tyres with the same brand or a cheaper brand will save you money. In fact it will end up costing you far more because you will need to replace your tyres more often. And then there’s the time it costs you to change yet another punctured or shredded tyre on the side of the road. Many drivers are finding that there is a tyre brand that is still made to last without wearing out. American-made aftermarket tyre brand, Cooper Tires, still makes its tyres with stronger cords, stronger steel, stronger sidewalls and 30% more tread than original tyres. Cooper tyres are the highest mileage,

Page 30

most puncture-resistant tyres available in Australia. Double your mileage If you are only getting 30,000 kms or 40,000 kms from your current tyres, switch to Cooper tyres, double your mileage, halve your tyre replacement costs and keep your family safer while on the road. Mileage Warranty Cooper Tires’ written mileage warranty has been in place in Australia since 1993 and in the USA since 1978. Both have stood the test of time. In stark contrast, other tyre companies’ mileage warranties offered in Australia have been withdrawn after a short time.

AUTHORISED COOPER TIRES RETAILER Cooper tyres are only available from Authorised Cooper Tires Retailers. Talk to the team at First Avenue Tyre & Mechanical to find the right Cooper tyre for your vehicle, specially suited to your kind of driving.

Paddock 2 Plate country Fresh Meats

MEET OUR NEWEST TEAM FROM OUR AWARD WINNING BUTCHER, PADDOCK 2 PLATE After only being open for such a short time, our newest butcher ‘paddock 2 plate Country fresh Meats’, conveniently located inside the well renowned ningi Quality fruits, is fast establishing themselves as a supplier of premium meats at affordable prices with all their meats carrying their 100% money back guarantee. owner Dave Collins, is proud of what they sell and says his steaks are ‘top SHelf’ as you can see from this 40 day aged ‘rib on the bone’, one of their signature cuts, and selling for below $30 kilo they sure are affordable even if it’s not a special occasion as Dave says “ there’s nothing wrong with spoiling yourself” once and a while. Dave, a veteran to the industry of some forty odd years, has returned to the area where his successful career all started back in the seventies and says there are some basics to running a successful small retail business, they being a great location, and passion for what you do and, considering we have in the order of thirty thousand cars a day pass our front door, it’s little wonder this quirky little country business is going ahead in leaps and bounds.

Dave, along with his son Mattand local girl Katie give off a positive vibe every time you enter the shop as you can literally feel the love these guys have for what they do. there’s Katie, a mum herself who has introduced her range of ‘ready to go’ casseroles that work a treat for the working parent and as she says “ you can get home, put these ready to go meals in the oven and have a home
