AYUDA IS TEMPORARY

If you think about it, dole out or ‘Ayuda’ is like an illegal drug. Why? While monetary or non-monetary assistance provides temporary relief for the victims of natural calamities like during ‘Bagyong Odette’ or ‘Bagyong Kristene’ and help individuals who struggle sustaining their daily lives like 4Ps members, ultimately, it does nothing to eliminate the roots of poverty. Instead, it creates dependency and chaos among the masses.

‘Ayuda’ kills a person’s motivation to better their life, inspiring dependency to people who seek it. Instead of looking for a Job Opportunities, developing useful skills like carpentry, sewing, or caretaking, or building a business they rely on external aid to carry on with their life. This further increases poverty in the country. It also determines the Filipinos dignity and causing disharmony among communities. How? According to Aristotle, “Poverty is the parent of revolution or crime, “while the intention of providing dole out is to aid the poor, corruption and mismanage-

ment often bleeds into the system causing disorder. Some managers, who are supposed to be in charge of handling the distribution of ‘Ayuda’s’, steal a portion of the subsidiary and keep it to themselves allowing the poor to receive less than they deserve. Sometimes, people who are relatively well-off compared to others receive an ‘Ayuda’ even though there is someone who needs it more than them. The poor also cheat the system by enlisting many members of their family, disregarding the fact that they only need to enlist one, in order to receive more, effectively stealing from other families who

were unable to receive theirs.

‘Ayuda’ is a temporary solution, it should not be taken for granted to avoid disorder. Instead of using the 27 billion budget for Ayuda, the government can use it to build infrastructure, roads, bridges, MRTs or invest in the Department of Health and the development of science in technology to improve lives of Filipino people. ‘Ayuda’ is a good help to the poor, but the government can do greater things with it by starting with launching programs that can actually the roots of poverty.

Mid-year Election: The Bright Future is in your Hand

As we approach the mid-year elections, the political landscape is as charged as ever. Voters should think carefully before choosing the best candidates from the best for a bright future of a country.

Nowadays, many officials are involved in corruption, and that causes our society a mess. It should be a lesson for the young and old voters to be wise and take the election seriously because elections only happen once every few

years. The votes of each voter’s are at stake. The votes will be the reflection of a future in a country, which means choosing a good candidate for our country is important.

For students in Tayud who will be voting for the first time, it is essential to look beyond party affiliation of a candidate. Also, in evaluating a candidate, a voter should not only focus on a outer aspects of the candidate in a election, the background of the candidates must be considered.

The rise of independent and thirdparty candidates reflects a growing disillusionment with traditional party lines. Those candidates often bring fresh perspective and a commitment of serving constituents rather than party elites. Moreover, voters should evaluate candidates’ campaign strategies. Are they engaging with the community and addressing local concerns? The best candidates will demonstrate a commitment to their citizens that transcend mere electoral ambition.

In conclusion, as we prepare for the mid-year elections, the choice must be clear. Young Tayuranons must seek out the best from the best. By prioritizing candidates who demonstrate integrity, accountability, and a genuine commitment to the public, we can create a path toward a more representative and effectiveness government. In a time when the stakes have never been higher, let’s ensure our voices lead positive change. So always remember the future of a country is in your hands, so vote

Invest In the Future: Philippine Education System for Global Competency

An investment in knowledge pays the best interests”, this quote by Benjamin Franklin perfectly encapsulates why, despite its strengths and past achievements, the Philippine Education System is under scrutiny for its perceived shortcomings in ensuring global competency for students. A globally competent education system should be equipped with complete facilities that include up-to-date equipment, tools and materials. It corporateizes cultural awareness and language proficiency, and integrates the use of technology in students’ learning materials. As it stands with the current political situation in the country, the lack of funding and cooperation from the teachers, parents, and students; the cons outweigh the pros.

The first and forefront obstacle that the Philippine Education System is facing is the lack of resources that severely affects the quality of education students receive. Many schools suffer from overcrowded and poorly ventilated classrooms, dirty and unhygienic comfort rooms, unhealthy and limited options of food, and outdated teaching materials.

Most schools do not even have science labs or computer labs to conduct experiments on nor a gymnasium big enough to host sporting, cultural and artistic events on, which are vital to a student’s learning experience. This hinders Filipino students to gain the necessary skills and knowledge needed to compete on a global scale-compared to their peers in other countries where adequate resources are available, our students are at a disadvantage.

The country also faces problems in teaching cultural awareness and

language proficiency in schools.

Although the average Filipino can understand basic English enough to hold a conversation, they still struggle when it comes to grammar, spelling, or the fluency needed to be considered globally competent, despite learning English since kindergarten. They even struggle speaking Tagalog/ Filipino, their own national language: And with the rise of American and Korean culture, Filipinos are slowly forgetting theirs.

Lastly science and technology are two of the building blocks that help in development of a country.

In the Philippines, however these fields have always been riddled with obstacle that prevent Filipinos from harnessing their skills and knowledge. The lack of funding for adequate facilities and equipment’s like computers, internets, air conditioners, and many more significantly limits those capabilities of students in data

gathering and research. As well as the lack of certified teachers whom can guide and pass on incredible knowledge ton their students.

Despite these struggles, efforts are being made to counter these challenges. The government have launched programs like basic Educational Facilities Fund (BEFF) to provide funding for the construction, repair, and rehabilitation of classrooms and other school facilities. The government also supports cultural events, festivals, and activities to promote Filipino culture and DEPED has placed a strong emphasis on promoting STEM education systems maybe lacking for now, but with dedication and cooperation from everyone, it will not take long for the Philippines to become Asia’s Rising Tiger once again. Just like Ivan Fitzwater once said, “The future of the world is in my classroom today.”

Dole outs: A Must Have or a Must Go Habit?

Government financial aid or dole out is important to people especially those who are struggling financially. When someone loses his/ her jobs, faces an emergency and cannot make ends meet, “ayuda” would somehow help them survive. It allows Filipinos to pay for food, rent and other basic needs during tough times. For many families, government support is a safety net when things go wrong.

However, ayuda should not become a habit that people should rely on for a long time. An individual who gets used to receiving aid and stops trying to improve their situation, it can create a problem.

Financial aid is there to help during emergencies, but it is supposed to replace hard work and personal growth. People need to have goals to get back on their feet and become independent again.

The government can do more than just give money. It must offer skills training programs or provide livelihood to help people find jobs, learn new skill or start small scale businesses. These programs can give people the tools they need to be productive citizens. It is important for the government to help Filipinos not just to survive but to thrive.

In conclusion, dole outs are necessary only for calamities and short term help but must not become a habit. The goal should be to help people stand on their own and build a better future for themselves.

In awake of this disaster, it is crucial to recognize the resilience and strength showed by the affected individuals and to the community of Libo as a whole.

The fire tragedy that struck Libo, Tayud in Consolacion serves as poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the unpredictability of nature. As lives were disrupted and home were reduces into ashes, the community immediate response showcased an inspiring out pouring of solidarity and support . The Tayud National High School and Barangay coming together to offer solace assistance local organizations mobilizing resources, and authorities providing aid highlighting the unwavering strength of communal bounds in times of crisis.

SNAKE BITES: Be Aware of Indoor and Outdoor Attacks

In one of the episodes of Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, a recurring dream started to destroy Mang Warlito’s equilibrium. He was constantly hounded by the incident when he was beheading a King Cobra’s head upon seeing his son Francis hospitalized. Francis was rushed to the nearest hospital after it got bitten by a King Cobra that recently came out from their toilet bowl.

In November 2024, Franz Pepito, a SHS student from Tayud National High School suddenly jolted in shock and pain when a snake bit him in an early evening at their home in Sitio Libo, Tayud causing his family in panic. He was then given first aid and was brought to Vicente Sotto Medical Center the next day. Unfortunately, he was not treated in the government hospital due to a long waiting list of patients seeking immediate care due to animal bites.

Overtime, snake bites became lethal in the world of humans. Delivering deadly venoms in a person’s well-being. Snake bites are injuries caused by the bite of a snake which may or may not inject venom. It is one of the significant yet underreported health concerns in the Philippines, particularly affecting rural communities like barangay Tayud.

The Philippine Statistics Authority reports approximately 300 documented deaths every year due to snake bites. In Cebu, 30-60 cases of snake bite cases were reported by the Department of Health. According to Dr. Beethoven Bongon, Toxicologist of Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC)- Department of Emergency Medicine, 99% of these cases are non-venomous.

Philipine Cobra (Naja Naja Philippinensis) is one of the snakes that causes the rise of death rates of snake bites with an estimated number of 107.1 deaths per 100,000 population yearly in certain areas. Most of the victims were young males, with a median age of 17, and only 8% reached a hospital for treatment based on the PubMed’s report.

STRAY DOGS: A Growing Concern in Tayud

Since snake bite victims are often delayed in getting to the hospital and also due to the fact that the venom from a snake spreads quickly, the Department Of Health (DOH) announced some Do’s and Dont’s to help each individual survive if it got bitten by a deadly snake.

First, immobilize the whole of the patient’s body by laying him/her down. Followed by applying pressure if necessary.

Second, avoid any interference with the wound like rubbing, vigorous, cleaning, massage and application of chemicals.

Lastly, bring the patient to the nearest hospital as soon as possible.

As what the DOH stated, snake bites can lead us to fatal injuries and can lead us to death. Snakes appeared unpredictably. They choose no such place— rural, urban, close or open space to attack. Even indoors, such as bedrooms and comfort rooms. They can even be seen in the toilet of your comfort rooms, staying as if it is their home.

Awareness and taking these simple precautions can reduce the risk of snake bites in one’s community.

ust like many schools around the country, Tayud National High School also suffers from stray dogs loitering back and forth all over its premises. Despite the joy and warmth dogs bring, as well as their educational value, animals in a school environment can present numerous challenges and risks to the students, teachers and staff.

In one incident during the Brigada Eskwela, a student was bitten by a random dog causing worry and anxiety among the parents in the community. Miss Rica Judaya, a Math teacher was also a victim of these stray dogs in school.

Effect of Stray Dogs in the School Environment

Inviting a pack of stray dogs to roam the campus is likely to have both good and bad effects. Students are easily attracted to dogs and naturally they will be fed and befriended. Dogs can also be an emotional relief and could generate compassion and care.

But the horrors that these stray dogs bring forth far exceed the pros. The incident when a student in Tayud was bitten by a dog reminds us of the unpredictable behavior of these animals.

Dogs can pose danger for they may become defensively aggressive to threats. Strays also increase the risks of diseases like ticks, fleas and rabies which put the health and welfare of both students and teachers at a serious risk.

ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM

Addressing the Problem

Some of the actions that should be taken by the school are:

WORK WITH ANIMAL SHELTERS: Tayud NHS can partner with local animal shelters and rescue groups to facilitate the safe capture of dogs from the campus premises.

AWARENESS DRIVES: The school can undertake awareness drives to educate the students regarding safe interactions with animals and the consequences of feeding and maintaining a pet dog.

BOUNDARY WALLS AND GATES: If the school premises are properly fenced and gates are closed during class hours, stray animals will not enter the campus. Securing entry ways will help contain free movement of dogs in the area.

COLLABORATION WITH LOCAL AUTHORITIES: The school could work with local government units like the Municipality of Consolacion and Barangay Tayud to address problems on stray animals of a bigger magnitude. Long-term initiatives like community wide spaying and neutering programs can be effective in reducing the number of stray dogs being generated in the locality.

It is true indeed that stray dogs can be a momentary respite for the students of Tayud NHS, something to paly with and have as companions, but can also bring in huge dangers. The school can address the problem up front to underscore the value of striking a balance of caring for animals while ensuring safety within the school environment.

FROM IMMERSION TO SUCCESS

“Great things start from small beginnings”. People often hear this line from a popular song ad of a chocolate drink product. It might be a cliché but this has become a quote associated with individuals who have made successful strides from simple steps.

Melanie Wasquin- Parto’s achievement is a testament to this popular line. She is a living example that hard work can take you far and starting small with perseverance will create a bright future. As a former student of Tayud National High School, she started working during her work immersion when she was in Grade 12 at McDonald’s Consolacion Branch. From a young and struggling work immersion student, she is now the store manager of the new branch of McDonalds in Tayud, Consolacion, Cebu.

During her immersion, Melanie learned part of customer service, food preparation, and teamwork. What she learned as a student of GAS- Bread and Pastry elective, she applied in her work and was able to experience hands on training from the company. “It was a great experience, helping me understand how a real workplace operates,” she shared. Despite the struggles she had with her studies, family problems and finances, with her determination and hard work along with her positive personality, she has successfully completed the 240 hours of work immersion in the company.

Little did she know that this brief stint in Mcdonalds for work immersion was the golden key to her future. After the immersion, she applied as a service crew while taking a course in college in Cebu Technological University- Consolacion Campus.

But this was not an easy job- juggling college life and part time job. She learned to bear with tough customers, stand long hours, and learn much at high speed. “It was challenging, but it taught me patience, communication, and how to work under pressure,” she added.

Teamwork with co-employees is what Melanie remembers, particularly the fond memories of enjoying the time when she was trained to manage during busy hours and work on kitchen equipment, which within itself built even more confidence while teaching the value of teamwork.

With motivators on stage such as managers and, above all, her dedication, she eventually ended up in the store manager position.

As a manager, Melanie now has to grapple with such challenges as team management, problem-solving, and swift decisions. “It’s not easy, but it’s very rewarding. I’ve learned so much along the way,” she said.

“McDonald’s changed my life and helped me through college even despite the pandemic. She is incredibly thankful to have such a good company whose values are customer-driven, Malasakit, Integrity, Teamwork, and Excellence.

She is thankful to her teachers for their belief on her and for her former supervisors who have guided her and trusted her with important roles in the company. Melanie, who is now a wife and a mother wishes to inspire the students, particularly those from Tayud National High School to never give up and to make use the opportunities given to them by God. “In everything you do, do it to glorify God,” she said.

CAUSEWAY IN LIBO: Providing a Mix of Business and Pleasure

Libo Coastal Road has become a hub of growth and opportunity for students and residents in the Tayud. Since it opened in the middle of 2023, many locals and students living nearby have started operating small food business stalls every night. Some student food sellers, primarily junior and senior high school students, have begun selling food and drinks along the causeway as a way to earn extra money while studying.

The Libo, Tayud Causeway was built in the middle of 2022 and opened to the public on September 14, 2023 led by Mandaue City Lone District Representative Emmarie “Lolypop” Ouano-Dizon who facilitated the funding of the said project. The new road has greatly helped reduce traffic on the main highway between Tayud and Liloan. It has created an alternative access for drivers from the Cansaga Bridge to Laray, Nangka, or SM Consolacion, avoiding areas where traffic is inevitable, especially during rush hours. The road also has created new businesses and jobs for many people. Some nearby residents have started small stalls selling street food every night to earn money. Young students have also helped their parents sell food and drinks on the road after school. It is a perfect location to show off their cooking skills and offer a variety of tasty food to the community since the road is flocked with motorists, visitors and locals in the evening. Maximizing the influx of people especially during weekends, they help their families earn money and serve the community with delicious food at a young age.

were visiting and wandering around the area because of the beautiful view after it was opened to the public. “I decided to sell my items there because I noticed an opportunity to operate a small business stall there,” he said.

Small and young entrepreneurs are very grateful for the new coastal road because it really helps them survive and thrive. “Operating a food business on the coastal road is very helpful for us because that’s where we get our daily school allowance and food.”, Franz added.

Recently, the Libo coastal road was closed for repairs and widening, but it did not stop the likes of Franz to continue their fare as people never stopped coming. As it opened anew for the public, vendors, visitors motorists and locals are definitely looking forward to a more exciting, refreshing and stress free night in the causeway. It is truly a respite in the busy town of Consolacion.

“A good character is the real beauty that never fades,”

For Mr. Rogelio A. Cantago, Jr., this line perfectly reflects his view of life and his strong belief in values.

Born on August 11 in Polog, Consolacion, Cebu, Sir Roger as he is fondly called, embodies passion and dedication in the field of education. He is one of the seven children of hardworking parents and his upbringing instilled in him the values of hard work and perseverance.

Sir Roger started his academic journey at Danglag Elementary School, followed by Cabangahan National High School. In his quest for good education, he proceeded to college and studied at the University of Cebu Main Campus, where he took up a degree in Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Mathematics. This laid the foundation for a fruitful and meaningful career in teaching.

With 26 years of teaching experience, his dedication to his profession is unwavering. His proudest achievement is being appointed as a principal in a private school for eight years. During this time, he witnessed the success of many of his former students, a testament to his positive influence as an educator.

As a person who never gives up easily when things get tough, he always considers challenges as a part of life. He believes that in every problem, there’s a solution, just like the saying, “There’s always a rainbow right after the rain”. He

added that one should never give up because God gives us challenges to test our faith and strength.

As a teacher and leader, he underscores the values of acceptance and commitment. “The greatest lesson I have learned is to accept individual differences, whether among students or teachers. We can never please everyone, but we must ensure that we’re doing our best and staying committed,” he says.

During weekends, Sir Roger enjoys simple things such as videoke singing, movie watching, and just browsing through TikTok. This aptly illustrates how Sir Roger copes with his work and leisure life- a perfect balance of work and relaxation.

As the newly promoted and installed Assistant Principal 2 of Tayud National High School, he hopes to implement changes that would benefit both teachers and students. His first week at the school was a joyful experience, thanks to the warm and welcoming atmosphere created by the students and teachers of TNHS.

He expects much from the school community. “I expect excellence among the teachers and students,” he shares. For Sir Roger, being a teacher and leader is God’s calling. Yet, in a humorous way, he wouldjust imagine himself managing a sari-sari store or working in a bank if not in the field of education.

Mr. Roger A. Cantago, Jr. is an educator, a mentor, a leader, and a role model. His passion for his work and his faith in the potential of his students and colleagues make him a beacon of inspiration in the field of education.

FUTSAL GIRLS TRIO: A Story of Resilience and of Giving Back

T“Kapoyon pero Padayon!” his line has been the constant motivation of three inspiring women and former Futsal players of Tayud National High School as they navigate their journey in life.

For Margie Bedrijo, Trisha Bedrijo and Erika Mae Sugarol, Futsal is not just an ordinary sport they have learned to love since junior high school but a door of opportunities and dreams. It taught them resilience and not to give up. And more importantly, it opened their hearts to share more to others and to give back.

Back when they were starting Futsal, they enjoyed the sport since it was new in the community and they were able to meet new friends. But as they grow and became more confident in playing, they realized the big opportunities behind this sport and that it could bring them far.

After being spotted during the Provincial Meet where they won 2nd place, they received a scholarship from Senior High School to college from Rizal Technological University in Manila and became part of the Futsal Varsity team. From playing tournaments in the national and international level to traveling to different places, Futsal widened their horizon and made them realize that this sport is too good not to share to others.

Coming from Cebu and living in a new environment, they have encountered challenges and

struggles. Balancing sports and academics can be difficult, but they never gave up on their dreams. Hours and hours of training can be tough but they persevered and showed resilience.

After graduating from college where they earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education degree in 2023, they decided to go back to their roots- Tayud, Consolacion to give back.

Margie, Erika and Trisha wanted to bring back the legacy and the glory days of their alma mater and barangay by sharing their experiences and give opportunities to young students. For free, they voluntarily helped in training the Futsal Girls team of Tayud National High School on weekends.

“We wanted them to know the feeling of bringing pride to our school and soon to our municipality this coming provincial meet. It will be a great source for them to strive harder not just in playing futsal but also towards excellence”, shared Margie in an online interview.

Currently, the trio work in a sports retail store in Cebu, a big company that also helps people to move through the wonders of sports with a campaign in helping public schools specifically Mabolo National High School. Their

company is committed to provide student athletes with equipment for them to use during their preparation for different sports events.

As Tayud NHS Futsal team prepares for Provincial Meet to be held in City of Naga, these empowered women are behind them, supporting the girls all the way. Even if they have a regular job, they work hand in hand in providing the best training for the student athletes.

The trio wanted these young athletes to realize that being part of the Futsal team is not a coincidence but an opportunity to challenge oneself and to bring out the best version of who they are.

“Futsal or any other sports is more than just winning, it is more about learning and growing. Every setback is an opportunity to get stronger, both physically and mentally”, shared Erika.

Trisha also added that sometimes things will not go one’s way, but that doesn’t mean you are not improving. The skills you gain in sports like resilience, teamwork, discipline and confidence will definitely serve you for life, both on and off the field.

Truly, this Futsal trio is an inspiration and a pride of Tayuranons.

KINGS WINNING KICK

Arrogante to compete in Prov’l Meet, intensifies training

King Jazpher G. Arrogante kicked rivals in the pinweight category in the Taekwondo event during the Municipal Meet held last December 2024, earning a spot in the Provincial level slated next month.

The taekwondo jin from Grade 11 Onyx will represent Consolacion District in the Cebu Province wide sports meet to be held in Naga, Cebu on February 9-14, 2025.

“I am determined to perform my best in the Provincial Meet not only to make my school proud but also to prepare myself for the future plans in Taekwondo”, he shared Arrogante is currently training for the meet together with other taekwondo jins from Consolacion through the guidance of their coaches and trainers from Taekwondo Academy of Consolacion.

Along with his brother, 18- year old Jay Paul G. Arrogante, also a Grade 11 student from Tayud NHS, Taekwondo has opened a lot of opportunities for them. Both of them were able to compete in the Cebu First Taekwondo Championship held in GMall last 2023. In the finweight category, King won the gold medal in Bracket B and Jay

Paul coveted the silver in Bracket A. They are also gearing up for another competition in Cebu slated on May 2025.

This sport also tested their love as brothers and made them realize the value of sacrifice. As children of a vendor and truck driver, their parents’ meager income could not support their bid to join different tournaments especially in the national and international level.

Despite the lack of financial resources to sustain the sport, the elder Arrogante has sacrificed not joining a national competition in Benguet to pave the way for his younger brother.

In the 1st Benguet Taekwondo Championship, the younger King Jazpher triumphed against a black belter from Nueva Viscaya which earned him the gold medal. Jay Paul may have missed the chance to compete in the same competition but he was equally proud of his brother for achieving this great feat.

The 17 year old red belter is also set to compete in the Big Boss Taekwondo Championships in Taiwan to be held sometime in February or March this year.
