Susan Schwalb: Metalpoint Paintings 10:30AM – 4:30PM The exhibition includes 15 paintings executed in metalpoint and colored gesso by Susan Schwalb, who has been working in the centuries-old technique since 1973. She began experimenting with silverpoint after encountering the medium unexpectedly via an artist friend and has emerged as one of its foremost masters today. Historically, the practice of silverpoint, the most common type of metalpoint, dates back to the Middle Ages. Artworks that use this technique are executed with a stylus that creates fine lines when applied to speciallycoated paper. Once a line is laid down, it cannot be erased or changed. Schwalb uses a variety of metals in her work, including copper, aluminum, gold, platinum, and tin. Working on a prepared surface of paper laid on panel, she draws painstakingly thin lines in different formations. Schwalb often coats the paper herself, creating a surface which becomes an important part of the work.

Grounded in the description in Genesis that the world came into being through a series of divisions - light and darkness, day and night, sea and land, animals and human beings - this exhibition presents works in different media by 17 artists, who explore how individuals and communities maintain their distinctiveness, yet also reach across divides. They address boundaries that may be physical or spiritual, exist in law or in tradition, and traverse secular and religious life as they confront issues of gender, Jewish cultural and national identities, as well as geographies. With work by Andi LaVine Arnovitz, Tova Beck-Friedman, Siona Benjamin, Ken Goldman, Tamar Hirschl, Sara Klar, Lea Laukstein, David Moss, Laura Murlender, K. This year we are teaming up with our local schools to engage our youngest citizens in youth-centric health activities and to promote complete wellness for all of those who live in The Bronx. Come watch New York’s elected officials and candidates participate in a stickball contest in the shadow of Yankee Stadium in celebration of Bronx Week’s Health Day and the ongoing #NOT62 Campaign for a healthier Bronx. It will be a day of physical activities, health education, and nutrition. Come climb the rock wall on Lou Gehrig Plaza, visit New York City Football Club’s Street Fleet, and to take the pledge and become ambassadors of health.
