The Bronx continues to be recognized as a national and international tourist destination. We are no longer just a “best kept secret.” People from across the nation and around the world are taking notice. We have so many great restaurants, as well as entertainment and cultural attractions, comparable to anywhere in the country, and this guide provides you with an amazing overview of all of the great activities, locations and events that make our borough an outstanding place for tourists to visit. Welcome to The Bronx! If this is your first visit, your Bronx experience will be exciting and fulfilling. For those of you that are returning, you will quickly note that there is even more to enjoy and see. This Visitors Guide has been especially prepared for you by our Bronx Tourism Council to ensure that you maximize your time here. Our beloved borough is diverse in language, culture and sports. We want you to experience it all. On City Island you can go fishing and then visit one of many incredible seafood restaurants. On Arthur Avenue you can shop for authentic Italian products and then sit down at a myriad of delectable restaurants and pizzerias. If you are there for dinner, you may find yourself in the middle of a singalong at one of the restaurants. If you brought your bathing suit, Orchard Beach is the place to go. There is live music at the beach every Sunday during July and August. Make sure you bring your dancing shoes. We also have horseback riding and the oldest municipal golf course in the nation. A lot can be found in The Bronx, and that includes great shopping at great prices. I encourage you to visit our stores at the Mall at Bay Plaza as well as the longest shopping district, Fordham Road, where friendly sales persons will provide you with mementos and products at prices you will not see anywhere else. When you return, consider staying at one of our new hotels. You can then use the savings to visit more of our exciting destinations. Thank you for coming. We look forward to your return!

We are overjoyed to present to you our 2 nd Annual Bronx Visitors Guide! In this convenient pocket book you will find a variety of things to see and do in one of the most dynamic boroughs in New York City. Join the record number of visitors from all over the globe making their way to the borough, visiting our institutions and dining at our eateries. It’s obviously a great time to visit The Bronx. Some of the top tour companies in the city have designed exciting bus and walking tours through interesting historic Bronx neighborhoods for you to enjoy. (see pages 38-40) Last year, my office expanded our Bronx Trolley tours to include the Mansions & Cottages: Historic Homes and Gardens of The Bronx, which was met with great success. This year we are launching a new Breweries & Distilleries Trolley Tour and anticipate record numbers of visitors coming to our borough. (see page 37 for details). Also, in 2015, our annual borough-wide signature events like Bronx SalsaFest™; BronxWeek™; Tour de Bronx™ and Savor The Bronx™ Restaurant Week (see pages 26 & 27) enjoyed the largest participation ever and many of our attractions (pages 10-15) have reported a significant increase in visitors. WELCOME TO THE BRONX ATTRACTIONS SUBWAYS & TRAINS Subway and train lines in The Bronx generally run north-south, and are the best option for getting to and from the other boroughs. The 4/5/6 trains travel to the east side of Manhattan, while the B/ D/1/2 trains go to the west side. Subway and commuter rail maps are available from the station agent at most subway stations. http://www.mta.info Metro-North Railroad commuter trains run about once every half-hour on weekdays and about once per hour on weekends at most stations, providing easy access between Grand Central Terminal, the Hudson Valley and Connecticut. http://web.mta.info/mnr/html/planning BUSES Every corner of The Bronx is accessible by bus, and it’s the best way to travel east-west across the borough. The Bronx has two Select Bus Service (SBS) routes, the Bx12 SBS serving Fordham Road and Pelham Parkway, and the Bx41 SBS, serving Webster Avenue. All SBS buses require payment before boarding; keep the receipt from the ticket vending machine as proof-of-payment for the duration of your trip. http://www.mta.info AIRPORTS Of the three major airports in the New York City area, The Bronx is closest to LaGuardia Airport, just across the East River. The best way to get there by public transportation is to travel by subway or Metro-North into Manhattan and transfer at 125 Street to the M60 SBS. http://www.panynj.gov/airports/laguardia.html To get to John F. Kennedy International Airport, travel by subway into Manhattan and transfer to a Jamaica Center (Queens)-bound E train. WELCOME TO THE BRONX ATTRACTIONS BRONX GREENWAYS The Bronx is considered the borough of parks, and famous for its urban environment, famous sites, historic monuments and many exciting destinations. But The Bronx is also known for its extensive greenways. Mosholu Parkway Greenway runs along the parkway from Van Cortlandt Park to Bronx Park. Pelham Parkway Greenway runs along the parkway from The Bronx Zoo to Pelham Bay Park over to Orchard Beach and City Island and up to Westchester County. Hutchinson River Greenway runs along the parkway from the Cross Bronx Expressway to Pelham Parkway with plans to extend further north to Westchester County.

Hudson River Greenway runs north-south along the western edge of Manhattan ending at Inwood Hill Park, but plans will have the path going through Riverdale in The Bronx and extend up to Yonkers. Bronx Harlem River Greenway is planned to run along the east side of the Harlem River from the RFK Bridge to Van Cortlandt Park. South Bronx Greenway is planned to connect The Bronx River Greenway through Hunt’s Point, to the Randall’s Island Connector. Bronx River Greenway will run from the mouth of the river in Hunts Point extending north to Westchester. Sections are already built including the path from Pelham Parkway up to the city line. Soundview Greenway will connect The Bronx River Greenway to the Hutchinson River Greenway and some segments are already built in Soundview Park. ART DECO The Bronx has over 400 Art Deco buildings. The Grand Concourse has even been recognized as a landmark district for its art deco landscape. ATTRACTIONS CITY ISLAND This seaside community has the look and feel of a small New England fishing village. It is famous for its seafood restaurants, local shops and art galleries. THE CITY ISLAND NAUTICAL MUSEUM Located in a landmarked 19th century public school building, the museum serves as a repository for the island’s rich maritime history; includes artifacts, documents, artwork, and photographs on the island’s role in making sails, building boats and military vessels, as well as some famous yachts competing in the America’s Cup for many years. 190 Fordham St | Bronx, NY 10464 718.885.0008 | www.cityislandmuseum.org

THE GRAND CONCOURSE Known as The “Grand Boulevard and Concourse,” and fashioned after the Champs Elysees, it is the longest street in The Bronx, spanning four miles in length and 180 feet across. ATTRACTIONS THE HIGH BRIDGE Completed in 1848, this arch bridge is the oldest bridge in New York City. Once part of the Old Croton Aqueduct, many Bronxites such as Edgar Allan Poe, would take contemplative strolls across the Harlem River on this bridge. The bridge was opened to the public in 2015. APRIL

April is a great time to Spring for The Bronx! We welcome the beginning of milder weather with a series of fun activities throughout the borough and offer various tours that will take you on new adventures. Entire month.

We celebrate the Best of The Bronx during 11 days of festivities taking place throughout the entire borough. We end with a star-studded black-tie gala honoring the Bronx Walk of Fame inductees, a parade, a food & arts street festival and an outdoor concert. May 5—15.

JUNE

AUGUST

In June The Bronx commemorates the birth of our nation with the New York Salutes America Fireworks Extravaganza at Orchard Beach. Visitors enjoy live music, dancing, and fireworks at the “Bronx Riviera.” June 30th. The summer sizzles in el condado de la Salsa (the county of Salsa.) Throughout the month the borough pays tribute to the music, the dance,

October offers the perfect opportunity to Fall for The Bronx! Canoe The Bronx River, hike through trails in the borough of parks, go fishing in City Island, or visit historic homes and gardens. Participate in the many activities welcoming the season. Entire month.

NOVEMBER

The largest free cycling event in New York State takes place in The Bronx! This highlyanticipated event brings thousands of cyclists from all over the globe to experience the neighborhoods and waterfronts of the borough while on a 25-mile or 40-mile bike ride. October 23rd

Savor the flavors of the borough during Savor The Bronx Restaurant Week. Sample some of the borough’s diverse cuisine. Discover new tastes and celebrate different cultures. November 7-18
