A report by Lord Browne has recommended the £3290 per year cap on tuition fees in England be removed. UK Business Secretary Vince Cable said a fee of £7000 a year to get university qualifications was being considered by ministers but fees for some courses could top £12,000.

Page 23

StudentS may have to start paying £6000 pounds or more in university fees if the government adopts the recommendations of Lord Browne’s review that was published last week. However, students won’t have to start paying their loans back until they are earning more than £21,000 a year. universities choosing to charge over £6000 will have to prove that they are providing a service equal to the fees they are charging and that they have a fair admissions policy. despite this, many potential and current students are worried that removing the fee cap will lead to an even greater gap opening between the rich and the poor students. eight days ago on October 12th, Lord Browne of Madingley released his controversial report on the review of “Fees policy and financial support for...students”. Many have waited a long time for this report, it has been scheduled since top up fees were introduced in to law in the ‘Higher education Act 2004’ by tony Blair and the Labour Government.

the vote is well remembered as it was the closest new Labour ever came to being defeated in the House of Commons. It was won by just five votes. the outcome sparked huge controversy as forty-six of the deciding votes were cast by Scottish Labour MP’s whose constituencies weren’t affected by the legislation. It was also a complete u-turn on new Labour’s 2001 election manifesto pledge stating “We have no plans to introduce university top-up fees, and have legislated to prevent their introduction.” Launched on the 9th of november 2009, the review has looked at a huge range of issues involving higher education and has come up with a comprehensive set of reforms. the review presents “a radical plan to shake up higher education in england and a charter for choice for students, who will be entrusted with far more power to shape their own future.”

By Laz Wood

Student Editor // student.editor@thebucksstudent.com

Hundreds of students and staff here at Bucks have sent emails to our local MP, steve Baker, laying out the strong case against cutting funding to higher education. Many have since received a reply from his office, written and distributed by his researcher Tim Hewish. In this reply Mr Baker claims that young people get a “rough deal” and that one of the things the government needs to do to correct this is to place higher education on a sustainable financial footing.” However, Mr Baker believes that the way to achieve that goal is to vote for the planned cut in government spending on higher education. He insists “new students entering university would be getting a better and fairer deal…these measures

IF you haven’t seen the red and white flyers that cover our university’s walls, it’s officially election time at Bucks New uni. This is one of the most important times for students and universities in modern history and the upcoming student elections is your chance to make a difference. Forms have been available since 17th of January and already nominations are flooding in for the three full-time officer positions on the Executive Committee. The three prestigious jobs available are the Students’ union President, Vice President Education and the Vice President Student Involvement. This is a great opportunity for students to help their university improve and strive in the future; especially in such trying times that we are facing with today. The three positions available are a part of the Students’ union Leadership and will become trustees of the university’s charitable organisation. The President will become a member of the governing body in the university and will have responsibility for the Su’s finance, staffing and strategic leadership. They will also take up the task of being the union’s spokesperson. The Vice President Education is a position that is looks after the academic issues and policies at BNu, and will attend the senior university meetings. The Vice President Student Involvement deals with any sport, society, RAG and volunteering problems or queries students may have. These three positions are paid, full-time jobs and the elected candidates will be around the university the majority of the time speaking to students about what they want and will try to make it happen. There are also two jobs available as National Conference Delegates, which will entail attending the NuS National Conference to represent the Bucks Students’ union and to voice their opinions on how students are portrayed and represented in Britain. The term length of each of these positions is one year, although they can be re-elected for a second year. This is the maximum anyone can hold in the position. Continued PG 3

seem to me to be a genuine improvement… it is my settled intention to support the Government.” During a visit to officially open the new Gateway building, the Minister for Universities and Sciences, David Willetts, spoke to some students explaining “students still won’t have to pay anything up front… we are raising the re-payment threshold to £21,000…it won’t affect any of you.” He also spoke about how there would be no loss in quality of education or services provided as the government plan simply traded teaching grants for higher tuition fees. While Mr Willetts seemed perfectly comfortable sat in a conference room with a group of students, being asked polite questions and declining to directly answer

them, he avoided a carefully orchestrated peaceful protest by a large group of students. Entering the Gateway building via the fire exit in Rusty Bucks, Mr Willetts refused to face the protesters who had staged a mock funeral for beloved mascot Rusty as a symbol of the death of higher education at BNU. Students at the protest, cold and angry at being ignored despite their respectful, silent and non-threatening attitude and demeanour, then began to chant well known slogans from recent demonstrations in an attempt to get the attention of Mr Willetts as he toured the Gateway. The funeral and subsequent emails to Mr Baker were just the latest in a string of protests by students all over England.

Some of the protests have led to students invading and taking control of university buildings while others have resulted in mounted police being used to charge down protesters. Such violent actions, which are widely considered to be more damaging to our cause than useful, thankfully have not involved any students from here at BNU. However, this does not mean that the Students Union has given up! As this paper goes to print, Tom Foy, President and Christopher Clark, Vice President Education, are on their way to parliament to personally lobby Steve Baker to listen to the concerns of his constituents and to take in to account the damaging effect the higher education cuts would have on our university Above: David Willetts, the Minister for Universities and and dozens like it. Of course it’s not just the bar that’s seen greater usage. Greater numbers of students than ever before are benefitting from being one of over fourteen-hundred members of the eighty-two societies and sports teams. These are a great way to get involved and build social networks and thanks to the Big Deal, it’s all free for you! Vice President Student Involvement, Sam Wadieh, is delighted with this increase, he said “It justifies the Big Deal and shows that it is really working. Sports, socs and recreational activities are the social glue that holds our community together. They build social skills, life skills and give back to the community through raising for RAG and volunteering.” The amount of students volunteering has trebled and between them they have raised a phenomenal five-thousand pounds, over a thousand of which has gone to the RAG charities. The Students Union also works constantly to not only make sure that the student experience maintains its current high standard but that the education we receive is improved wherever possible. It funds and supports a student representation system that involves over two hundred students and four staff. Your elected representatives attend dozens of meetings every week. They discuss issues that range from preferred teaching methods to the governance of the University. Vice President Education, Chris Clark, said: “Never before have we had such a large or more effective representation system. Students can now get directly involved in creating and improving university policy. We are now working as partners with the Uni to work on everything from course curriculums to teaching styles.”

Deputy General Manager, Tristan Tipping, has been delighted with the student response to the efforts by SU team to expand and improve the student experience. “The Union has seen an explosion of student involvement this year, as more and more members of the Bucks New University community engage with Union run activities,” he said. Speaking about the growth of trading he said: “The SU bar has seen a significant increase in attendances. So far this year we have had 30,000 individual visits to our Big Deal events programme, this has included a sharp rise in attendances from student guests as well members of the local community who are increasingly purchasing tickets for our comedy and live music events.” This growth has led some students to question whether the SU slogan of ‘Not for profit, just for students’ is really true (See where does your money go? Pg 10+11). However, Tristan has made it clear that any profits made by the SU are directly re-invested in the student experience. Speaking about the advantages of this growth he said: “This has two benefits in that it’s an additional revenue stream for the Union to reinvest in student services and the more frequently members of the public socialise with students, and the more they value the university as a centre of arts and entertainment, the further we go to breaking down the divide between ‘town and gown’.”

NO MAY BALL THIS YEAR IT WAS announced this week that due to the current economic climate, the Students’ Union are unable to afford to hold a May Ball this year. Last year, the May Ball was staged in London and it was not as successful as hoped. Students have said they were disappointed with the night and the Students’ Union had a loss of £16,000 because of the event. Unfortunately, with the current recession the university is struggling through, it would be

On MOndAy 21ST MARcH Student’s Union President Tom Foy issued a statement on behalf of the Union’s Executive committee over the potential for strike action this week. He states that ‘The Students’ Union has huge sympathy for UcU over their calls for an agreement on job security. The Union is gravely concerned about the impact on the student experience of our members if we continue to see cuts to the numbers of academic and professional support staff within our institution.’ He goes on to articulate the Union policy which is ‘to support our members in ensuring that they don’t lose any contact time as a result of the strike.’ If your classes are not rescheduled following strike

“We have been able to find no other viable alternative that meets these expectations without a substantial financial subsidy the like of which is not currently available.” However, it has been said that instead of a Ball this year, the SU will hold a special end-of-year themed celebration which will hold 1000 students. This event and details of will be announced in the forthcoming weeks.

More student Protests cause panic for the Police August. they had threatened to use rubber bullets if the protest got out of hand, similar to the riots that occurred in the student protest in november 2010. the marchers were led by mounted police whilst police and news helicopters monitored their moves. regardless of the peaceful nature of the protests, over 20 arrests were made throughout the day - compared to the 153 arrested in the one this time last year – for breaching the peace.

reportedly, no Bucks new University students were at the demonstration, but this could be due to the fact our university is not charging the maximum £9,000 for the courses. BnU fees will be approximately £7,500 for new students. however, BnU did attend the protests last year, but as a peaceful marching demonstration and thankfully were not involved in any of the violence witnessed. Left: (Centre L-R) Student Shellie Ransom, PCSO Simon Sanghera, Cllr Katrina Wood, President Ash Coles, Vice Chancellor Ruth Farwell, PCSO Lauren Brown, Cllr Khaliel Ahmed The launch of our new Students’ Union Community Guide was hailed as “the beginning of lasting change” by President Ash Coles. VIP’s and dignitaries from our Union, the University and the local community echoed his words, proclaiming the project launch to be huge success. On Monday the 16th of January, students, Union staff and members of the

local community braved the cold to go out to residents in the hughenden and Temple end area and deliver copies of our new Community Guide. The guide gives students tips and tricks on everything from moving in, to fire safety and busting alcohol and drug myths. . This comprehensive guide has been written and funded in co-operation with Thames Valley Police and Wycombe

District Council. It aims to give students the information they need to get the most out of their time in high Wycombe. It is hoped that it will engender increased levels of social awareness and community spirit across the student body. As part of the launch, special ‘I Love hW’ packs were given out to students living in halls at Brook Street and hughenden Student Village, as well as

students living in head Tenancy Scheme housing in the hughenden area. These packs contained ‘I Love hW’ bags and mugs, tea bags and a copy of the community guide. The idea was to try and get students to visit their neighbours with their packs and share a cup of tea to start building stronger links with their local community. (Continued on Page 3)

and the rest of the floors be dedicated to those who are willing to study in silence? After speaking to one third year student, he believes this should definitely be in place. “I studied in a university in Ireland before coming to Bucks,” he explained, “in that library there was completely silent. A security member stood in every floor and if you made noise twice you were thrown out. this was much better as it got us motivated and was not distracting. I find the library here awfully hard to concentrate in as there’s always a big group of people

speaking loudly. It’s not on.” A second year Film and tV Production student agree: “I think the idea of having all silent floors bar one is a great, but it’s unrealistic. It might work if those who wanted to be noisy or discuss things could use the study rooms.” Another issue that was brought up was the fact that there are no computers available on the silent floor, something we’ve discovered is a massive turn-off to students. Overall, the students here do think that library is far too disruptive a place to work in. Let’s just hope that this constant noise is muted soon so that it doesn’t start affecting our grades. hint-hint university bosses.

Is the Bucks New University library a place of study or a place to catch up with friends? Libraries are meant to be a silent area where students can catch up on their work, read books and use the printers and other facilities available to help enhance their time at university. however, the more time spent in the library here at Bucks, the more you realise the noise – the constant chattering, shouting, laughing, and music blaring through each floor. All but one, that is. the fourth floor in the Gateway building is the only silent floor in the whole of the university. And I can personally say I’ve never seen more than one person up there at a time. shouldn’t this be the other way round? shouldn’t there be one floor where the people who want to chatter and mess about can stay

Another student protest hit the streets of London this month. on the 9th november, thousands gathered in a somewhat peaceful march to show their disagreement with the rise of tuition fees. however, it appeared the police of London were expected similar violence and anarchy experienced at the protests last year. there were around 4,000 members of police on patrol Wednesday 9th; double the amount of students and only 2,000 less than were on patrol the first night of the riots in

The theme was Bugsy Malone, which students made a huge effort to comply with. One attender said “I really thought I would be the only one who had made the effort, but when I got there I was so surprised how many students had bought into it and everyone looked great. I think the lads really loved the gangster theme!”

Unlike the May Ball, which would always include big names in the performance line-up, The Speakeasy event was home to a number of acts that were almost unheard of to many students. Nevertheless, only good things have been said about the music that night. This year BNU really went out with a bang, (which may have been caused by all those gangsters). Let’s hope the next end-of-year party, Ball or no Ball, is just as successful.

The LACK of a May Ball was overshadowed this year, as the Big Bucks Speakeasy was a phenomenal success. This event, which was organised as an alternative to the May Ball, was held in the SU last Saturday. The May Ball last year had to be subsidised by up to £14,000 – a substantial figure that is unaffordable in today’s economic environment. however, a lot of students have agreed that the Big Bucks Speakeasy was “ten times better” than the previous end-of-year celebration.

This year’s Freshers Fortnight was arguably one of the best and busiest so far at Bucks New University. The students’ Union really pulled out all the stops to ensure that our students had a fortnight to remember... alcohol intake depending. They booked some of the best acts BNU has seen such as comic Piff the Magic Dragon and Andi Osho, D.J’s scott Mills and sam Robinson and more special appearances than you can shake a stick at. The sU Bar had some fantastic drink offers -which some were cursing in the morning - that made the nights out student friendly and money-worryfree. The fortnight was kicked off with the welcome party on the sunday, and it’s safe to say there was a lot of sore heads in Monday morning lectures. since that we’ve had Comedy Central, toga night, Oktoberfest, Freshers Festival and many more. The Fortnight was concluded with the most flamboyant Freshers Ball the sU has seen. Everyone made a real effort to dress up and it was certainly an excellent farewell to the beginning of university. however, it doesn’t the partying stops here. Make sure you keep an eye out around the university for the next big night out. We’ll see you there!

Carly May beattie, and her brother Daniel, both tragically lost their lives in a plane crash in Merritt island, Florida, on the 9th of June this year. Friends and fellow Snowsoc members have organised a memorial bench to be established outside the university by the willow tree. “We’ve always talked about getting something set up where we can go to, just to chat and feel close to Carly” explained friend Natasha Mayh, “so we decided on a bench under the willow tree because that’s where we have all the Snowsoc photos taken.” Vice President Student involvement Amy Gordon helped the group of close friends to get this organised. they wish to express their sincere gratitude to her. Following a highly contested election season, complete with a lively announcement and not without complaints, next year’s officer team sees a fresh line up. it had promised to be close in both vice presidential elections but no one could have envisaged the high drama that saw naomi Franco and Jack Badu sweep to victory. new Vice President Student involvement Franco beat fellow candidate Richard lunn

proved that marketing is everything as the crowd chanted back the Best Campaign Slogan: ‘want it done, vote Richard Lunn’. it was the tiger print clad fans of Franco that walked away with Best Campaign Team, whilst Laz Wood’s goodie filled envelopes were rewarded with Most innovative Campaign. Anya Cao was the recipient of a Special Commendation following easily one of the best showings from an international student in recent memory. Another winner on the night was current President Ash Coles who roared into a second term with a majority of 605 votes over re-open nominations, as no student had chosen to stand against him. Speaking about his victory Coles said ‘i have really enjoyed my year in office working on behalf of all our students, hopefully this sends a message to the University that what we do is backed by our members’. Students can expect a year focussed on employability, Uxbridge and promoting the benefits of the Big Deal to our members. Badu’s manifesto was highly committed to improving the opportunities available for students to network with professionals in their chosen sector, whilst Coles chose to reinforce the importance of Uxbridge to our Union and a commitment to further develop the Union offer there. Naomi Franco’s manifesto spoke about the amazing value that the Big Deal provides for students and stated her intention to communicate this more effectively to try and make more of our members appreciate the fact. in addition to the sabbatical elections laz wood and Tamica Mignott were elected as delegates to NUS National Conference. Dan laws, Sammia Hussain, Shanique Miller, Tom willmington, Matt gilbert and Marcus Baxter were all elected Union Councillors for the next academic year.

Over the weekend of Fri 11th – Sun 13th May brought us a whole new May Ball concept, in an attempt to reach as many students as possible and to offer a special night to final year students, the SU decided to spread the ball over 4 events, thus creating The Festiball. Being the first time that the SU have run the May Ball in this form, it was hard to know what to expect. We came down relatively early, for a night at the SU and despite being very quiet it gave us a chance to look around and see what was on offer. As we approached, we noticed tents scattered around the tree outside the SU. This and the marquee hosting the ticket entrance already gave a feeling of being somewhere other than our usual hang out. The White room had been transformed into a massive tent with iconic red and blue stripes of a festival marquee white made for a great feel, this mixed with giant inflatables hanging from the ceiling created a very festival meets club vibe. Vice Chancellor Ruth Farwell has apologised for the delay and problems regarding the issue and assured students that in a press release on the Bucks Student website that “we are doing everything in our power to provide the information you need”. The problems came about after the University introduced new timetabling software, which had been used by other universities, and they were hoping it would be ready for students before the

term started. Students’ Union Guy Humphrey President Ash Coles has led the Union charge in asking why this software wasn’t trialled alongside the existing system in order to ensure a smooth transition. BNU instead ran into problems which have evidently caused chaos for a significant number of students throughout the University. Many of whom work and have caring responsibilities and this has resulted in unnecessary financial losses for some.

Bucks Students’ Union has had a positive impact on your time at Bucks by: Lobbying the institution to invest in a compensation fund for students who have been left out of pocket by the recent timetabling problems. In addition we have been supporting students who have had module options reduced as a result of the mistakes surrounding timetabling and will be heavily inputting into the review into what went wrong.

As this is the 50th edition of The Bucks Student I thought it would only be fitting to talk about the best of The Bucks Student. There have been many memorable editions of The Bucks Students (last year’s controversial ‘sex survey’ springs to mind). We have been there throughout many of the most important moments in student life here at Bucks, cutting courses, elections and rising student fees. We were there when the furniture courses were being cut, we were there when the cleaners were removed from Brook Street, and we were there when you wanted to know what course was getting the most sex, all hard hitting, and topical news stories. From Issue 1 right through to 50 we have always been about students getting their voices heard, we have always seen ourselves as a force for good, we really can change things here at Bucks New University, and all we need is a little help from you guys. While we do tend to have a bit of fun here at The Bucks Student our main purpose is a serious one, we don’t like to shy away from any situation, be this political, course related or just something you feel affects general student life.

“I Will Vote For It” says our MP By Laz Wood

Student Editor // student.editor@thebucksstudent.com

Hundreds of students and staff here at Bucks have sent emails to our local MP, steve Baker, laying out the strong case against cutting funding to higher education. Many have since received a reply from his office, written and distributed by his researcher Tim Hewish. In this reply Mr Baker claims that young people get a “rough deal” and that one of the things the government needs to do to correct this is to place higher education on a sustainable financial footing.” However, Mr Baker believes that the way to achieve that goal is to vote for the planned cut in government spending on higher education. He insists “new students entering university would be getting a better and fairer deal…these measures

seem to me to be a genuine improvement… it is my settled intention to support the Government.” During a visit to officially open the new Gateway building, the Minister for Universities and Sciences, David Willetts, spoke to some students explaining “students still won’t have to pay anything up front… we are raising the re-payment threshold to £21,000…it won’t affect any of you.” He also spoke about how there would be no loss in quality of education or services provided as the government plan simply traded teaching grants for higher tuition fees.

Bye Bye Tom! Tom Badger Third Year Event & Festival Management

So Long, Mr. Castle This man is probably someone who many of you will not have seen before, but he is part of the living mechanism which produces this paper. His designs, proof reading and content mapping skills result in this publication. This man is Tom Castle. Tom works in the communications and marketing department for the Students' Union. He has a hand in producing most of the flyers, booklets, event posters, menus and newspapers you will have seen for the past few years. Something I must keep in mind when writing this article is that Tom will be proofing and potentially editing this very page with his own visage on it, so I have to keep it moderately clean. No Frankie Boyle jokes, then. As well as the potential to say the wrong thing, there is potential to over-compliment, resulting in him thinking that I am, (in modern slang linguistics) ‘hitting on him’. Sorry Tom, this is not the case. To those who do not know Tom, let me assure you he is a great guy to have on your Students’ Union team. He has an eye for detail, is a keen stickler, and a perfectionist. His hard work has contributed to the rebrand of the entire Union, producing much of the promotional materials used for the Venue, and a well-kept waxed moustache. (Of which myself and my facial bum-fluff are highly envious. If I could even just grow a toothbrush mustache I’d settle.) *Moustache. (Proofread that one for you, mate.) Having worked with Tom on this paper for last year, I have found many things. He is open to new ideas and taking a few risks. Let’s remember that we published a Charlie’s Vs Dennis’ and a sex survey last year, the likes of which had never gone to print in The Bucks Student before. He has always been open and fair and, rightly-so, not afraid to critique. Annoyingly, quite often he’s right. Hardworking and a stickler for quality, Tom’s shoes will be size 18s. I’m no podiatrist, but those are big shoes to fill. As Tom steps back into his own higher education routine, starting a master's degree in Branding at University College of the Arts, London, I know I speak for many people when I wish him “good luck”. That’s everything pretty much covered I think, hopefully I did this justice. I’ve been Tom Badger, reporting for Newsround. “Does anyone find it ironic how a program aimed at old people is called 'Countdown'?” – Frankie Boyle

I’m sure by now many of you know all about the other exciting and free activities the Students’ Union provides other than just a place to come on a night out, including nights out to the West End, theme park trips, training workshops and our Sport For Fun activities. For many of you this will just be a reminder, but a lot of you first years might not know the full range of free activities available to you all through The Big Deal, so here it goes. So, what is More Than a Bar? For the last two years The Students’ Union has run the ‘More Than a Bar’ campaign which allowed people to really see the scope of what the Students’ Union does. The purpose of this campaign is simple, to show people that your union truly is more than just a bar and at

the same time giving you the opportunity to win a growing cash prize. All you have to do is let them know how they have had a made your life here at Bucks New University that little bit better; just like last year this can be done through a simple hashtag (#buckssumorethanabar), filling out a comment card or new to this year’s campaign, through Instagram or Vine. Every time someone fills in a comment card or hashtags on social media sites they will add 5p to the prize, with the winner getting the lot, everything, each and every penny! So it’s really in your best interest to get involved with the More Than a Bar campaign as much as you can. Last year the chosen winner received over £250, the best bit about this? Student Opinion. Julie-Ann Robertson Third Year Creative Advertising

WHY BUCKS NEW UNI SHOULD PRACTICE WHAT IT PREACHES So let’s start with giving the University a round of applause for finding someone to fill the employment gap in the marketing office. Well done University, well done. It took you long enough, but progress. Why the long wait? It’s not like there aren’t willing people ready to take any job that graces them. But the University has a tendency to see past the blatantly obvious, like the fact they have a whole bunch of soon to be graduates ready for any task they get.

know, a lot of the courses are the tops of their field. The University has some of the best facilities and courses in the country in regards to film, advertising, piloting and audio, and those are just a few. Uxbridge is a nurse making super machine. Enough said. Imagine how much better the University would look if they stopped talking about course collaboration for our benefit and, oh I don’t know, actually practiced what they preached. I understand they can’t employ every fresh doe-eyed graduate they find, and that’s fair, but they have courses and the facilities that could help them promote themselves better at the least.

"They don’t need to look very far... we are here to be used."

They have everything they need right here to improve their branding. The graphics students would be more than happy to change the tacky tri-colour logo to something more tasteful. There’s more than enough people to organise, perform and shoot a decent TV spot.

How many students on a marketing course wouldn’t love to grab a chance at working straight away? If the University has jobs in their field of expertise available, then it should be a sure win right? Yes, but it’s the University, they can’t grasp the idea of using their own resources to solve a problem.

If all else fails, you have the advertising students, who could come up with a better marketing angle than the neon pink ‘Produced at Bucks’ campaign from hell abusing our eyes.

Yes, we all know Bucks New University has more of a reputation for being ‘terrible’, but little does everyone

Wrapping it up in a tiny bow of perfection, give the events management people free reign. By the time they’re done, the whole of Wycombe, and not just the students, will be flocking to the only happening place

in town because they want too, and not just because there is nothing else for them to do. Course collaboration shouldn’t just be another lecture we have shoved down our throats, because believe it or not, we the students agree on the benefits it has for all of us. We want to work together, we like working together. Let’s face it, it’s bad enough the University ignores the students in Uxbridge and make any form of collaboration near impossible for them, but when they just let the opportunity slip past them here in Wycombe, it’s just pure laziness on their part. Take the initiative. If you’re investing a lot of effort educating a group of eager, job hunting, young people who are becoming skilled workers, you should use them. It’s free labour with the keenest employees ever. They don’t need to look very far, they don’t even need to pay us, we are here to be used that way. You guys are a university, if the students have to spell it out for you, you’re living up to your league table reputation. It’s not hard. It’s even ‘university understandable’: USE US.

THE UNIVERSITY'S SIDE OF THE STORY It’s good to see this recognition that Bucks has many courses that are doing well and have strong reputations with local and national employers who actively seek to recruit Bucks graduates from fields including Nursing, Air Travel and TV Production, to name just a few. Our new staff in the marketing department are working with academic colleagues to make sure these great stories are told widely and get the recognition they deserve, which in turn helps more students and graduates on their career paths. 92% of our 2012/13 student leavers were in work or further study 6 months after leaving (an increase of 8% on the previous year), and half our students are in what HEFCE recognise as graduatelevel employment (weirdly that doesn’t count anyone in self-employment!), a 10% increase on the year before. Throughout the University community we are working hard at helping students recognise the wealth of experience and transferrable skills you build through extracurricular involvement in Activity Week, and through the Students’ Union, via societies, events work, part time jobs, and volunteering. We are actively supporting an increase in work based learning and work placements, and there’s support from the Big Deal on Course for students travelling to work placements and interviews. We involved

students in the selection process of the University’s advertising company, and we set live briefs in courses, and for University projects. Keep an eye out for more exciting live briefs as we’ve got a few in the planning stage at the moment. We recognise students and graduates need valuable work experience which is why we have created BucksTemps who work with the faculties to create opportunities for our students in well paid, course related, interesting positions. Since the launch of BucksTemps in February 2014 (where we practice what we preach, employing three students!) we’ve had fast-paced growth. We place over 40 students a month into roles such as IT Helpdesk, the Library Quiet Patrol and Learning & Technology Assistants. Many roles at BucksTemps look for specific degree related skills. Examples are the recruitment of Graphic Arts students for Infographic communications to be used around campus, and actors paid to undertake role play for developing communication skills within our nursing courses. BuckTemps brought over 80 external organisations onto campus last Thursday to ensure all our students have access to developing their networking and employability skills. In other areas of the University we employ students as

"BucksTemps places over 40 students a month into roles." Fresher’s Helpers and Buddies for new students, Senior Residents to look after students in Halls and Enterprise Champions to encourage engagement with a range of employability activities and competitions. As part of our marketing activity we employ students as ambassadors and mentors - working with us in schools and colleges, at open days and other events and, of course, featuring in talking head videos. We recognise our students have great talents and we want to work with this talent and to pay and develop students and graduates through the process. We're currently making contact with some of our graduates who've reached the top of their careers people at Google, Channel 4 and Ikea for example, as they are great examples of what Bucks students can achieve, no matter what league tables might say. by Professor Shân Wareing Pro Vice Chancellor for Learning and Teaching

What's the 'Big Deal' (On Course)

As one of the Faculty Officers for Design, Media and Management, I think I’ve been to at least a handful of meetings now where The Big Deal on Course has at least been brought up. As a student, I don’t think I can count the amount of rantings I’ve been a part of or overheard since the start of term. It's fair to say there have been a few... teething problems. We're now going in to December, the last month of first term, and some students still don't have working book vouchers or their printing credits loaded on to their accounts. On November 24, students were invited to meet with members of the University Council and various members of staff to share their views about The Big Deal on Course. What I personally gathered was that students really aren't aware of the difference and now think The Big Deal has loads of extra bits. University statistics say that 78.5% of freshers are aware of the Big Deal on Course package. I honestly think that if you asked those same people what they thought it entailed, most would be confused.

"there have been a few... teething problems" Actually, how many people know what The Big Deal on Course is? I've spoken to a few people who only know about it because they've happened to see one of the very few posters around campus. Some lecturers are very poorly informed about anything to do with the initiative - I don't blame the lecturers at all for this, it's another example of Bucks communication. The Big Deal on Course and The Big Deal are different things! Sports, societies and recreational activities being free is part of The Big Deal. Book vouchers, printer credits and subsidised trips are part of The Big Deal on Course. I've spoken to a few people who think they get course fee reductions, public transport passes or Staples vouchers! Now I’m not for one second blaming us as students for any misinformation. If we’re not properly informed about things, how can we know? I had to go and find out information for myself and I don't think being told that that's acceptable is good enough. I come to University to learn - teach me about everything to do with Bucks, not just my course.

"Oh and third years, we do get graduation gown hire!"

Maybe it's just because I'm a sceptical third year and think that Freshers must know more about The Big Deal on Course considering the initiative started this year within the University, the same as these first years. Think back to when you were a Fresher and how much information was thrown at you during the first week that you're meant to understand and take advantage of - to be honest, they should be glad you even attended those meetings with the hangover you'd got. After speaking to some first years, I found that The Big Deal on Course was barely spoken about at inductions! Bit of a missed opportunity. I know that each course has a specific package tailored to their specific needs Graphics have more print credits than Audio Production because they obviously need to use the printer a lot more - but all this confusion of who gets what could be easily solved by having one, clearly advertised place where all courses can find out what they're entitled to.

Once themes and that you have clearly expressed ethical issues. have been identified, you can use specific quotes to support these. Good practice in quantitative research: Good surveys will be to the point and will be easy for the participant to complete. You should aim to use appropriate question types depending on your aims, such as Likert scale questions to express extent of agreement. Any ambiguous terminology should be operationalised to ensure that it is specific and measurable. Pilot studies: These are essential in any robust research. The purpose of a pilot study is to test for validity, anomalies and reliability. Pilot studies should discover any issues or problems before they arise in your actual research.

Does Cheating Pay Off? First of all let’s talk about what the National Student Survey (NSS) is - For anybody that doesn’t know the NSS is a national survey for anybody in the final year of study (excluding post graduate) to grade the quality of their courses; the survey asks undergraduates to provide honest feedback on what it has been like to study on their course at the institution they are at using a 1 to 5 rating; 1 being the best grade and 5 being the worst. It has long been known that certain institutions will lead students into rooms and brief them on what their feedback really means. It may not be widely known that grading your course a 3 can actually count as a negative mark; so many institutions will tell their students this, which under the guidelines of the NSS they are not allowed to do. They also remind their students that the NSS has an effect on the University league tables, meaning that if you grade the University negatively you could be harming your chances of future employability. The NSS states that “encouraging students to reflect in their answers anything other than their genuine perceptions of their experience, such as making any link between the NSS, league tables and the perceived value of students’ degrees is not acceptable” but with other Universities doing exactly this are we at a disadvantage if we do not join in? You may ask if it’s worth the risk, in the guidelines it states that: “any allegations of inappropriate attempts to influence the outcomes of the NSS are taken seriously by the funders of the NSS. This is to ensure that the integrity of this essential part of the Quality Assurance System is maintained.” They also claim that they “will take action” but as of yet there have been no reported incidents of institutions being kicked out of the NSS for the breaking of these rules, so what’s the harm? The only real punishment is a fine, but what University doesn’t spend money on trying to move up the league table? Surely paying a fine in order to jump 20-30 places up the league table is not only money well spent; surely it’s a no brainer. Now obviously none of us want to be a part of an immoral institution, and technically the University is doing the right thing by not breaking these rules, the question is whether you would rather be a part of a University which does the right thing or one which will bend or break the rules in order to climb the ladder. What are your views on this? Should the University break the rules of the NSS so to increase their league table score? Tweet @buckssu

Representation.

Life of a Rep By this point in the term, you or your class mates have probably started to notice some issues with your course that you wouldn’t mind changing. I was in this exact same position in my first year, and as it so happened around that point a man from the Students’ Union came along. He told us about being a Student Rep. He preached to us about how we could make a change, and that we as Student Reps could be the voice of the unheard students. I took him up on this offer to become a Student Representative but 3 years later, still representing my class and now my department, what is it really like to be a Student Rep? It’s easy to become a Student Rep. Sign up in the appropriate place, pitch your case to your class mates on why you should be a Student Representative and 'force' them to vote for you. If you win the election you will be a Student Rep. This is when all the fun starts. The first act that you will do as a Student Representative is to attend your Student Rep training. This is where you will be taught about what you have to do in your Programme Committee Meetings (PCM), learn all of the stupid acronyms that the University loves and perform several group activities. Then you will be dropped into your general tasks of speaking to cohorts, going to a PCM, feeding back to cohorts and following up anything that needs to be followed up on. There are some nice benefits to being a Student Rep, the most obvious one is the nice £100 reward. Yes it’s nice to get this money but in my opinion it’s not just about the money. But as I mentioned earlier the man said that you as a Student Rep can make a difference, and this is the main reward that I have gained out of it. Obviously there are others like adding elements to your CV, gaining experience

by Andrew Fram

in different fields, and learning to deal with often stubborn lecturers. But knowing that you are improving the experience of your cohorts, and the years that follow you, or even other courses. That is the reward. Now all of this doesn’t sound too difficult, and honestly it isn’t too difficult. You only have to attend a couple of PCMs a year, and to most people this seems to be enough. They get their changes that are needed and get on with their student life styles. But sometimes, sometimes you have to work a little harder; my personal experiences have all been good. If there was a problem that needed to be changed that was not happening in a PCM, the Students’ Union was very supportive and helped you all the way through the process. All of the problems we had as a course have now been sorted and this couldn’t have happened without being a Student Rep.

"be the voice of the unheard students" I would personally recommend being a Student Representative. I have enjoyed my experience up to this point and I enjoyed it so much that I chose to become a Senior Rep as well. The skills you gain, and some of the challenges you have being a Rep really prepare you for how real world jobs work. It’s not a huge amount of work, but the results can make a huge difference to both your learning experience and the learning experience of your cohorts and future classes to come.

Success story.

On Thursday 13 November, we Music Management students were lucky enough to be given the opportunity to attend a Graduate Panel here at Bucks Students' Union. This is an annual occasion, as they are all busy people in the music industry, so was not to be missed. The first Bucks graduate to speak was Saul Fitton. I was surprised to know that he, along with three of the other speakers, graduated only 18 months ago, in summer 2013. Already he is a music producer working with Fraser T Smith (who has co-written, produced and mixed six number one singles in the UK and US). Saul stressed the importance of knowing a bit of everything in terms of all the different roles within the music industry, as “everyone does everything”, adding that working in a studio, A&R scouting and doing an internship with a PR company have all helped his overall knowledge of the industry.

Music Management Grad Panel by Joanna Chidley

The next speaker also graduated in 2013 and now works at Capitol Records, who have signed artists such as Katy Perry, Kraftwerk, Sam Smith and 5 Seconds of Summer. Since leaving Bucks, Jamie Leeming has interned at companies such as Domino, Sennheiser and Universal and said that “each one would benefit the next”, encouraging us all to take advantage of every internship opportunity as you never know who you will meet or what you will learn that could really help your chances of getting a job in this industry. Eilish Wilton is a 2013 graduate too, and now is a management assistant at Turn First Artists, who manage Iggy Azalea, Ellie Goulding and Rita Ora, amongst others. She shared her story of how, when everyone else was getting jobs and internships, she was sleeping on a friend’s sofa with little money to try and get her foot in the door of a job she knew she was capable of doing. Her message was “never give in”, which tied in nicely with Steve Marsh’s messages of “know your own worth” and “have that self-belief”. Steve graduated in 2008 and has done a variety of interesting and exciting jobs within the music industry, such as working on merchandise and being a production manager. Steve is now the Label Head of the Mascot Label Group. As Saul implied, no two days are the same for Steve either, and his general knowledge of the industry means that he might be giving out flyers one day, and doing finance the next. It is an industry that always keeps you learning and interested. The final speaker was Gemma Robinson, who at one point had to make the tough decision of turning her internship into a full time job, or finishing her degree. She chose the latter, graduating in 2013, she informed us that even just shredding paper or making tea will lead to meeting people and gaining experience, and to just “keep knocking on doors”. After listening to each person’s story, we could all mingle and ask the graduates any questions we had, which practically everyone took advantage of. I thoroughly enjoyed the event and found out some helpful advice tailored to specific questions I had, and I will definitely be attending future graduate panels.

"know your own worth"

Fall Out Boy

10 Jan So...Fell Out Boy. To start with it was a laugh (still is to be fair), one off gig in our hometown! It didn’t really go that way. After the first show we ended up getting a rebooking at the venue and at a local club night, it was weird but people loved it, especially drunk people. The great thing about Fall Out Boy is that they have great catchy songs that are a bit Bon Jovi/Oasis esque end of the night sing along style but with less hairspray. This year has been crazy for us, playing every weekend up and down the country, crazy club nights and awesome venues.

We’ve been received so well, there is obviously way more people who like Fall out boy than we originally thought! After recently having one of our videos tweeted by the actual band themselves that went out to near on 11 million people, we gained lots of followers and way more interest. Kerrang said it sounds better than the real thing! Either way, if you’re drinking or not, Fell out Boy is a great night out and right laugh with your mates. We are looking forward to this one, Jagers at the ready, warm those vocal chords, were coming for ya!

You'll love if you like: Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, seeing amazing bands for nothing!

Festive Fun.

A very ‘student-y’ Christmas It’s that time of year again. Christmas has come back around and for us students that presents a challenge. How to show you made an effort but on a budget. What with presents, getting home and even cooking and decorations. So here are some tips and tricks for surviving Christmas without breaking the bank. 1 - BUDGET

4 - GET CREATIVE

6 - SHOP SMART

Knowing how much you have to work with will help you have a debt free Christmas. Trust me budgeting is your friend during this festive season.

Don’t have much money for decorations? Make ’em! Make paper chains from Christmas paper. There are loads of homemade decoration tips online. Make your own Christmas cards, jam or even jelly baby vodka! It’s all online and could work out cheaper. It’s more personal that way too.

Don’t buy things from unreliable sites, you could lose out. Unaccredited sites and shops can be dangerous because you never really know what you’re getting or who you're giving your details to!

2 - SECRET SANTA Strapped for cash but want to get stuff for your friends? Set a small amount - maybe £5 - then each pick a name out of a hat. It’s a cheaper way of doing things and that way everyone saves.

3 - GET ORGANISED Make a list of people you need to buy gifts for and what you’re getting them.

5 - NO EXPENSIVE SHOPS They will be the death of your budget! It may seem nice to splash out for a loved one. But think logically, it you can afford it great, if not… I’d find a cheaper alternative if I were you.

7 - BEWARE SALES AND DEALS The deals can suck you in and actually make you spend more than you intended because you think you’re getting a good deal. If you're careful and stick to your budget you should be ok... There you have it, your seven top tips for a very economical Christmas!

Love from Secret Santa It’s that time of year again - everybody loves Christmas. But as students we may worry about being able to scrape together enough money to buy the perfect gift for friends and family. Luckily for us secret santa seems to be catching on. It is a genius invention, for those of you that aren’t aware, it allows a group of people to each be randomly assigned somebody to anonymously buy a christmas present for. It is designed to make shopping easier and cheaper. Here is how to set one up: Make sure everyone is up for it, and get them to agree to a limit - £10 is pretty common, anything less and you’ll struggle to find a half decent present. Put all the names into a hat and make each participant pick out a name - if anyone picks out their own name they should replace it and try again. If the whole ‘name out of a hat’ thing is too difficult for you. then let a site like elfster.com do all the hard work for you.

you supposed to know what to get them? Here’s some ideas for the perfect gift: Shot Roulette. £9.99 iwantoneofthose.com Perfect for the alcoholic or the gambler of the group. Fun gift that everyone can enjoy. Smartphone projector. £15.95 presentsformen.co.uk Good idea for the flatmate who is always hosting the movie nights in their room. Selfie Stick. £4.12 amazon.com Perfect for the vain ones of the group, that can't stop taking selfies. Don’t forget a bluetooth clicker to go with it or find one with it included.

DON’T TELL PEOPLE WHO YOU PICKED OUT, no matter how tempted you are. Its called SECRET Santa.

Which goes perfectly with this Cartoon Props Set for just £3.99 findmeagift.com

Once your presents are bought put them all together with the recipient's name clearly visible - nominate someone to pass out the gifts or get together and swap presents.

Voice Recording Fridge Magnet. £9.99 prezzybox.com Ideal for your flatmates that forget everything, or fun for student houses to record messages to each other.

Secret santa also gives you the opportunity to allow you to buy for someone who isn’t usually on your Christmas list. However this can prove difficult for some as if you don’t know somebody well how are

Personalised Wooden Star Keepsake. £10 notonthehighstreet.com Perfect for close friendship groups to get something for their desk or as a decoration that can be personalised to make it extra special.

I WISH IT COULD BE CHRISTMAS EVERY DAY…

More than just a Christmas Market!

Love from Secret Santa

by Katy Carson

by Abbie Blunt

by Carolin Lorenz

by Lizzie Farrell

More than just a Christmas Market! What is Christmas about? Christmas is not about presents, food or the alcohol we will be consuming. It’s about spending time with loved ones you might not have seen for a while, coming together and enjoying the time with each other. The key here is time. These days, no one has time anymore. Time to enjoy the little things, time to help others, time to give or time to love. It’s this time of year we should spend with our friends and family, make memories and just enjoy the little things in life. Having a bratwurst and mulled wine in the cold, wrapping up warm and having a laugh. Taking silly pictures in a photo booth or watching endless Christmas movies. All this will come together at this year’s Christmas market. So plan a couple of hours with your house/flat/course mates, or it might be time to spend quality time with your friends who have been so busy with uni, work and life. Please come and support the Christmas market and help to fundraise for our RAG (Raise and Give) charities and enjoy the entertainment provided. This year’s two RAG charities are Horizon Sports Club and SERV Blood Bikes. All the stall fees, and all money raised on the day will go towards these two great charities.

Christmas is about giving back, appreciating the things we have and giving love. At the Christmas Market we will have stalls in the Gateway selling jewellery, clothes, scarves, cards, cakes, accessories, cushions, bags, Christmas décor and gifts, make up and much more. Outside we will have food (Bratwurst, crepes and sweets) and a bar selling mulled wines and ciders (need I say more?). There will also be a live music stage with a Choir and live music performances all day. BucksTV will be making an appearance with a live Tall vs Small challenge featuring our very own Students' Union Vice Presidents holding a surprise challenge between the Rugby and Football teams. Do not miss out! The lounge bar will be showing Christmas movies all day long – hosted by the Bucks Film Society. The Students' Union Foyer will have a Christmas photo booth where you can make some memories! There will also be a raffle on all day with amazing prizes to be won. There is something for everyone! Look out for the Facebook page or posters for full details. See you all there!

I WISH IT COULD BE CHRISTMAS EVERY DAY… Some people hate christmas. Whether it’s the hoardes of cattle-like shoppers or the ridiculous length of time that it hangs around, you don't have to look very far to be a bit of scrooge. Fortunately it doesn’t have the same effect on all of us. There are those who potentially like Christmas a little too much... To the point that it may actually be deemed unhealthy. With the help of 50 anonymous Bucks students, a small survey was carried out to calculate whether we at Bucks love or hate Christmas. And the responses were highly interesting. 96% of students like Christmas and only a minimal 4% have a strong dislike for Christmas. A surprisingly small number of you that don’t look forward to the festive season. Christmas isn’t always for everyone and it is quite often forced upon you without you having much say in the matter. For those of you who love Christmas, here are your top festive picks: It appears that Elf is the most popular Christmas film with 22% picking it as their favourite. Closely followed by The Grinch with 16% and in a tied third place both with 8% each we have Love Actually and Miracle on 34th Street. There were three clear favourites for top Christmas songs. First was "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues and Kirsty McColl. In second place was "Do They Know It’s Christmas" by Band Aid. finally, rounding up the top three was "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey.

A grand total of 74% of the respondents spend Christmas at home, only 2% go abroad and 20% spend Christmas at a family member's home. The traditional Christmas experience of too many family members in one house. This year's Christmas Light switch on in Wycombe took place on Thursday 20 November, but a massive 63% of people said that's too early to start thinking about Christmas. The remaining 37% must wish it could be Christmas every single day. This could explain why half of you choose to start your Christmas shopping in December (maybe you enjoy the thrill of the last-minute rush?). Just 4% of students at Bucks are ultra-organised, beginning their shopping in January. Around 36% named November as their shopping month, deciding not to be one of the panic buyers. Speaking of shopping, most of you don’t brave the shops for the Boxing Day sales with only 32% choosing to go out hunting for bargains before the stuffing has even settled! Most are probably too busy eating leftover turkey and playing with their gifts. Christmas has numerous responses and feelings generated for most people, who seem to enjoy the festivity and spend the year wishing for a white Christmas against the very few who are a bunch of miserable Grinches. Merry Christmas and a very happy start to the New Year... See you in 2015!

SimpLee Christmas Cooking Mince Pies and Yorkshire Puddings

While SimpLee Cooking is all about inexpensive, easy to prepare food, we all know that Christmas time calls for something a little more special. Beans on toast and freeze dried packets of noodles will suffice at any other time of the year, they just won’t fill that festive void in your stomach. This is the time of the year when we want the best, but as students we still want the best on a budget, especially when the loan is running as low as it always does come Christmas time.

To start with we have a classic, fresh from the oven mince pies! Followed up by Yorkshire puddings, a true staple of any Christmas dinner, and something to impress your parents with once you’re home (a great way into making them believe you’re actually coping as an adult in the real world).

Experience the very best Thailand has to offer this summer! Volunteer in beautiful Thailand working in an elephant sanctuary and supporting a hill-tribe village. 6 August 2015 – 26 August 2015 Duration: 21 or 28 days with the optional extension to the beautiful island of Koh Samui! Itinerary You will begin your trip in Silom, Bangkok for two nights, where you are free to explore all the city has to offer. Visit the floating market and enchanting temples, or spend a day taking a tour of the city, shopping and enjoying the fantastic street food. You will then be transferred to Chiang Mai via a ‘VIP’ bus ready to start working in an elephant sanctuary for

the week. The sanctuary cares for elephants that have been abused, disabled or orphaned. Here you will get to swim with and ride the elephants as well as help care for them. Following this you will then move to the hill-tribe village for the second part of your volunteering project. Traveling to a hill-tribe village can be an adventure in itself, as they are often located in the most remote and authentic locations of Thailand! On your first day you will visit the village and share a welcome dinner with the villagers. There are many things that you can do to support the hill-tribe, such as teaching English, manual labor to improve the school, coaching sports, helping in fields and much more. After this you will then be transferred back to Chiang

Mai, and then Bankok for the last few days. If by the end of all this you are not ready to start making your way home, you can continue your trip for another week in Koh Samui or have your flight deferred and travel independently. So make the most of your summer with this amazing opportunity, whilst making a sustainable difference for the organisations and communities you will be supporting! Visit challengesabroad.co.uk for the full itinerary, details of the trip and to view the Koh Samui extension itinerary. If you have any questions regarding the expedition please feel free to message EmmaWednesday Goulden via Facebook.

Society.

Bucks EDU is a society of Bucks students with an interest in education - whether it be teaching, lecturing, mentoring, managing an educational institution or even taking on an apprentice in a specific field of work. This month, after reading a few very opinionated articles published by the media, we discussed a subject very relative to many of Buck's Students: Is it possible that tattoos reduce the ability for an individual to remain professional? Charlotte Tumilty, 26, has hit the media over the past month, as she was turned away from her teaching placement because she claimed her tattoos could not be covered up. The school - St John Vianney's Primary - commented on the accusation of prejudice, stating 'The school expects all members of staff to project a professional image and we have a code of conduct, part of which requires members of staff with tattoos to cover them up.'

Inked Educators

Within just a couple of days, Miss Tumilty's story had gone viral, provoking comments and opinions from across many online platforms, forums and social media. The arguments both for and against the freedom of tattoos in the workplace have now been discussed extensively by the general public, so we put the question to Bucks EDU. We asked: "What do you, the future teachers, mentors and leaders of Bucks New University, think about this subject?" Layla Middleton, a 3rd year Music management student, teaches part time at Aylesbury College and explained to us "I have tattoos but they don't care so long as I'm professional, although I teach at a college on a Music Management course so maybe it's a bit different!" Should we be keeping a professional image when teaching, or by accepting tattoos are we promoting equality and diversity in mainstream schools and universities? Franck said "I have a small tattoo on my arm and I'll soon be getting another one. These can easily be covered up by long sleeve shirts... I don't think tattoos are unprofessional at all, especially as they wouldn't be on show” So, is it fair to judge an individual’s skills set on the purity of their skin? Or is the question not about the appearance of the teacher, but about the individual’s blatant disregard of school policy? James Clare, a 2nd year Police Studies with Criminal Investigation student, explained that he thought the opinion of tattoos should be approached as it is in the police sector. "As long they are decent, nonoffensive, easily covered up, and declared at the point of interview, there should be no restriction on hiring individuals with tattoos. They also like it if you clear it with them before getting any more tattoos, which should be the same with teaching as both jobs are in the public sector"

Model: Laura Locket Secretary for the EDU Society

We want to know how many of you at Bucks have visible tattoos, and if you don't, would you hire someone who turned up to an interview covered in tattoos? Tweet us at @buckssu with your opinion!

B.N.U.R.C Bucks New University Rowing Club by Matt Smith

What have we been up to? The men’s squad at B.N.U.R.C have really pushed the boat out this term. After a far from shabby race season over the spring and summer of 2014 (racing 7 times, winning 3) the senior squad returned from the holidays full of enthusiasm for what the next ten months could bring. A three-day pre-season saw the seniors reacquaint themselves with the River Thames, taking out single and double shells out for mile after mile of rowing. With the sun shining over Marlow and the warm late summer water, the squad savoured every moment of the long weekend’s excursions, as we knew that training might not become such a pleasure going into the winter months.

On top of this, they push themselves through a 6-8km run on Monday evenings, circuit training on Thursday evenings and a further water session on Sunday afternoons. A training regime - which may seem a little extreme - but it definitely shows how determined these boys are to be successful for this University! Off the water! Whilst we’re training hard it’s important to us to build our society as a team and a member of the wider community. This week marks the start of an exciting calendar of events for rowing this term, as the team get stuck in with festive activities around the University! Sponsor an Elf - For as little as £1 you can sponsor a member of the rowing team to become a Christmas elf! Each member participating has been set a target amount to fundraise for the duration of the full-festive challenge. Fancy seeing us jog around town dressed in green tights and felt hats? Don’t miss out on your chance to sponsor an elf; proceeds split between Small Steps charity and B.N.U.R.C. Christmas Fair – Make sure to stop by and say hello at the Students' Union Christmas Fair on Tuesday 9 December. We’ll be selling a selection of Christmas cards and tasty treats to get you in the mood for the holidays! Christmas Single – Keep your eyes peeled for a performance from our team that will have you… lost for words! A bit different from our usual performance on the water, this festive project will kick off the Christmas period with some lighthearted entertainment!

What this year has brought us! The club took on a small but eager bunch of freshers, and it has to be said, all of whom have taken to the sport with an excellent attitude to train. On the water, their ability to quickly pick up technique and an understanding for boats movement has been quite astonishing. In the gym, their data shows that they are more than capable of giving the seniors a run for their money as far as fitness is concerned! The guys currently train six times a week meeting at 6.30am every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to travel down to Marlow RC. There, they bust it out on the rowing machines, weight train and take to the water with the misty autumnal sunrise.

Coming soon! In 2015, we plan on entering a number of Regattas and Head Races, including BUCS Head Race and Regatta, The Head of the River (the Oxford vs Cambridge Boat Race course in reverse) and of course Varsity 2015 - an event we are determined more than ever to win! Whilst small in numbers, B.N.U.R.C is a club with incredible ambition both as a sporting team and an active part of Bucks Students’ Union. Within our 3 years as a club, we have made such progress and we hope we can gather support ahead of another exciting year for the squad!

BEST OF BUDS 31 Brave souls. 10 Hours on UK highways. Ludicrous amounts of beer and banter. It can only mean one thing. Bucksnowsoc Hits Up Edinburgh 2014.

Only a handful of us actually compete, the rest of us cling to a mossy rock overlooking the city with a pint in one hand and a rubber fallice in the other.”

Ok, ok, so that’s probably the worst introduction to an article that you’ll ever read. However, it does convey the epic-ness (technical term) of this year’s Snowsoc trip to Edinburgh for the British University Dry Slopes Championships (BUDS).

Some further explaining is probably needed for that, but hey I’ll keep you guessing and move on. The tradition of

With thousands of snow-sports fans from dozens of universities from across the UK, it’s by far the biggest competition held by the British University Snowsports Council on home soil. “It’s the sickest weekend event of the year” says Snowsoc Secretary Jenny Wade. “We go every year, it’s like a right-of-passage or a ritual, if you will.

Gina Ramsden, a 21 year old University socialite said: “I was a state for most of it, so I’m probably not the best person to ask. But from what I remember, it was the best weekend of my life.” Did you read that, folks? Go back and read it again. Best weekend of her life, people, her life!

"best weekend of my life" Edinburgh is well-known, as 19 year old Film and TV student Timoffy Webb, explains; "I'd heard many legends about the great Edinburgh trip hosted each year by the Bucks Snow Society, but I was truly amazed to have them all come to life before me." An honour, indeed Tim.

Lead by Snowsoc’s Race Captain Jordan Cross, 20, an intrepid team of eight snowboarders into a weekend of racing and hard-nosed competition in the slalom, giant slalom and duel race events, after just one training session at a dry-slope in Essex. Some successes, with very good times

below 40 seconds posted in the Giant Slalom event (top 20%). As well as competition, there’s a showbiz feel to the event. The Saturday evening culminates in the Big Air Finals, where riders can be watched back-flipping, front-flipping and occasionally face-planting to the soundtrack of soft-core EDM. Not to mention the glorious Cuban Bros and Jaguar Skills hitting up the stage for the after-parties in the city centre. If you’re interested in getting involved with Bucksnowsoc, like us on Facebook and follow us on twitter. We run fortnightly taster sessions and recreational sessions at the indoor slopes in Hemel Hempstead, and hold socials every Wednesday. If you’re not interested but have still managed to read this far, go get a job.

Zumba Third Year Child Nursing

Friday 5 December, 8pm The Venue

"good way to meet new people" Going to the Zumba classes at the Uxbridge campus has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience for myself and other students. Before attending these classes I had never been to any Zumba sessions, so to begin with I was not sure what I was letting myself in for, but this fitness program has been energetic and great fun, as well as a real confidence boost. It has also been a good way to meet new people and get rid of stress, as well as burning lots of calories, which is a bonus!

The Zumba classes are the perfect combination of fun and aerobic exercise. The instructor is lively and enthusiastic, and the routines include interval training, alternating fast and slow rhythms, and resistance training. However, a lot of the time it does not even feel like you are working out at all – you just get caught up in the fun of the music and moves. I am really glad I started attending these classes, and the fact that it is free for Bucks students is another plus. Overall, being part of Zumba has been excellent and I recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Top of The League: Bucks Ladies' Football Winning Streak by Shanice Ennis-Melhado

Ask anyone about Bucks Football and chances are they will talk about the guys and not really consider the ladies team, but with the season we're having everyone should be talking about us. Why? Well let’s just say, this season, everything has changed and things are starting to look up for the team. Being a part of the Ladies football team I have witnessed first-hand the ups and downs we have had, from winning matches to losing poorly, especially last year - we didn’t have the greatest season. I think our lack of passion and dedication was a major factor in why we didn’t have a great season, but looking at the new team, I know I can say the complete opposite.

feeling in itself and has me excited and proud to be a part of such a great team this season. So what’s changed? Why are we on top of our game? I asked Grace Shiels (captain of the team) what her thoughts were on why the team have been able to maintain their winning streak. She explained that “all the players within the squad are all so committed; turning up to training every week as well as being committed on match days. Everyone has an excellent mental attitude towards the game. Also having all the new Freshers this year has given us a variety of new players which has improved the squad”.

"Everyone has an excellent attitude towards the game" With a new season and a new set of players, Bucks Ladies FC have played a total of five matches and have won all of them. Giving us a complete winning streak so far that we have been able to maintain. Our biggest win came against Kings College who we beat 8-0 in an away game on Wednesday 22 October. Our latest match was an away game against Hertfordshire, giving us a 6-1 victory and completely securing our place at the top of the league. Yes, that’s right - we’re at the top of the league. After last season I would never have thought that we would be at the top of our league, but to see that we are is a great

I couldn’t agree more. The new batch of Freshers have really given the team the boost it needed, and from what I have seen in matches the dedication and passion the girls have to play has been amazing to watch on and off the field and has given us a great mentality to want to win, but it is also the fact that we are a fun team who are able to go out and have a good time on the pitch, which I think is important within any sports team. Having fun whilst playing the game and doing our jobs is another reason I like being a part of this team, and with any match I have played this season “have fun” is something that I have always heard being said in the team talks. For me this

31 December Issue

shows the excellent leadership the team has, which again I think is another factor into why we have been able to maintain our winning streak. Obviously not every girl can play every single game each week, but another thing that I have loved about this season is the team support from the girls that don’t play in the weekly games. The incredible support the other teammates have shown has been amazing this season and it shows the strength and unity of our team as a whole. I think that is what pushes us as a team, to make each other proud when it comes to doing our jobs on the field. There is no doubt that this team is full of strong and passionate young ladies who have a massive love for the game. I am seriously proud to be a part of such a great team this season, especially being in my final year at the University. With our success, more people should be paying attention to the ladies football team because right now we are on fire and dedicated to doing our best on the pitch. The team's next match will be a cup game, away at Middlesex which will probably have been played by the time this is printed, but let’s hope you will be hearing about how our winning streak has continued. If we do win this cup game we will be in the quarter finals of the cup which is really amazing to think, let’s hope we make it all the way to the finals and win.
