BUCKS GIRLS CAN

Statistics show that 75% of females want to exercise and participate in sport more than they currently do. The insight clearly shows that amongst women, there is a significant demand to be more active - but something is stopping them. Sport England talked to women of all ages, right across England and identified a fresh and unifying insight - the fear of judgement. Whether it’s fear of judgement about appearance, ability, or for spending time on yourself rather than with family, it can outweigh women’s confidence to exercise. #BucksGirlsCan seeks to ‘liberate women from fear of judgement’ and aims to forge new positive social attitudes around women and girls being physically active, breaking down a key barrier so that they feel more comfortable exercising. The objective of #BucksGirlsCan is to create a comfortable, non-judgemental and inspiring environment for the women of Bucks to be active in whatever way they see fit. As a man, I will never know how it feels for a woman to be active, motivated and empowered…so who better to tell you than Bucks girls themselves?

“Dance is beautiful and dancing makes me feel beautiful inside and out. I don’t just do it to stay active, I dance because it’s in my blood and makes me feel powerful. Most importantly, it makes me feel PROUD #BucksGirlsCan”

Be Fearless, don't be afraid of what others may say | Be ambitious, don't chase your dream but live them | Be active, don't let anybody take you down | Be YOU, be proud of where you come from and where you want to be

"Sport is about releasing the stresses and tension that my week has brought me. It allows me to bring out my competitive side in a healthy environment, while also socialising. Climbing is as much about strategy as it is strength and is great for those who aren't such a fan of team sports. Being active and strong makes me feel empowered and confident in myself, and knowing how to box doesn't hurt!"

“Being a part of the BNU Swans isn't about fulfilling the stereotype of what most people think a cheerleader is. It's about strength, power and your team. Being on the mat and performing the routine you've worked on all year makes you realise how much you appreciate everyone on the squad and perform at 1000% just for them. #BucksGirlsCan”

University's response.

By Professor Rebecca Bunting, Vice-Chancellor

TALK TO US The University’s new five-year strategy re-affirms our commitment to the success of each of our students and sets out our ambition to be a leading university for professional and creative education and applied research. We have set ourselves challenging objectives for education, research and enterprise and identified our priorities to transform the effectiveness of the University. We know that there are areas for improvement and we want to work with our students to effect change. To be successful we need to be better at engaging with our students and listening to your concerns. It’s fair to say that we are operating in a tough environment: the University is facing significant financial challenges as we, along with the rest of the sector, adjust to the new competitive market and significantly reduced funding from central government.

But it’s not all doom and gloom, far from it. There have been many successes of which we’re proud this year: 94.5% of our graduates were in work or further study six months after graduating; we were in the top 50 institutions for assessment and feedback in the latest National Student Survey (NSS); the University won prestigious awards for teaching excellence and partnerships and was shortlisted for many more. We were also delighted to see our students and alumni scoop a range of prizes at events including the National Student Drama Festival and the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) Student Design Awards. And

through careful financial management we’ve been able to invest £5.2m in essential capital projects including major developments in IT, a new simulation suite for Operating Department Practice and the creation of new student facilities such as The Study Lounge. That said, we’re not complacent and we’re already working hard to make changes to keep improving our students’ experience. We have extended our 24-7 library coverage to include online librarian support; we are focusing on the levels of cancelled classes, and have created an action plan to address the key issues raised in the NSS. The University is committed to the success of all our students and is also working hard to ensure more of you find graduate employment when you leave Bucks. Student recruitment remains a key priority. We are finalising a suite of new vocational programmes called ‘degree apprenticeships’ where students can earn as they learn. As our licence to recruit international students was awarded so late in the recruitment cycle, all our efforts are now focused on attracting postgraduate students to join in February as well as undergraduate students from September. Our ambition for each of you remains constant. We will ensure that the resources we have are invested carefully to have the greatest impact on making each of you as successful as you can be. We remain committed to supporting our students into and through employment and work in partnership with the Students’ Union to fund a wide range of in-course and extracurricular opportunities designed to help you stand out in the competition for graduate jobs. The University’s funding of these initiatives and the Students’ Union wider work, including projects such as the Big Deal and Bucks Essentials, amounted to £1.4m this year. We know that you have a direct interest in improving the quality of education and services you receive. We have a shared belief that education changes lives and we want to work with you to ensure your student learning experience at Bucks is the best it can be. The University will continue to work closely with the Students’ Union and its sabbatical officers. We want you to know that you can also contact us directly if there is something you want to share, both positive and negative. Your feedback is always welcome at: speaktous@bucks.ac.uk.

GREEN IMPACT Bucks Students' Union actively champions green issues and environmental sustainability on campus. Each year the Students' Union works towards their Green Impact Accreditation which is organised and audited by the National Union of Students (NUS). Last year we were awarded silver accreditation which is a huge achievement and this year we hope to earn the same, if not better! Supporting sustainability on campus is not only vital in improving the welfare of our campus, but also crucial for the future of the planet we live on. Whether it’s thinking consciously over how we recycle, taking more time to fill up your water bottle rather than buy another one and making sure lights are switched off when we leave the room. Small acts like this can make a huge difference to our planet and throughout this year we will be spreading awareness of being green in many different ways. We are currently in the process of starting up our Green Society whose mission will be to ‘reach out and educate both staff and students to become aware of the issues that affect our planet and the ways in which as a community we can implement mitigating measures’. They will aim to become inspirational leaders in setting examples for the student population in how to respect our planet and champion green issues at university. We are also going to participate in ‘Go Green Week’ which takes place from Monday 13 - Friday 18 February. This is a week dedicated to promoting an awareness of Green Issues. We are aiming to run fundraisers for green charities, by making smoothies from waste fruit, creating a pledge to buy Fairtrade, and promote meat free Mondays. As a Union we are looking to recruit a Green Ambassador whose role will be to champions green issues and sustainability around campus, ensuring we are doing our utmost to be as environmentally friendly as possible. If you are interested in being our Green Ambassador, being a part of the Green Society or just want to take part in our go green week, please email volunteering@bucks.ac.uk.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT BECOMING A SABBATICAL OFFICER? Are you finishing uni in June, or want to take a year out from your studies at the end of your first or second year? Then why not put your name forward? At Bucks we have three Sabbs; President, Vice President Education & Welfare, and Vice President Student Involvement. Each of the three posts is elected by a cross-campus vote in March. The three successful candidates under-go extensive training both before and during their time in office, because we want our Sabbs to be the most effective voice of students that they can be. If you are interested in becoming a Sabb you can register your interest on our website at bucksstudentsunion.org/representation.

Representation.

By Will Hoskin

A REPUTATION TO REPRESENT Representation is at the heart of what we do. Over the last few years the representation system has gone through a few minor changes, adding a rep here, removing a rep there, changing who some reps cover and adjusting the system according to the changes in course and departments by the University. What are reps expected to do? Last year reps were asked to attend rep training, speaking to their class, gather feedback, attend two Programme Committee Meeting to give the collective voice of their class, fill in an online feedback form explaining in their words what went on during the meeting; and feedback to their class. This year on top of all that we are asking that they meet with the Students’ Union representation team three times a year, fill in feedback a further two times a year and attend a student rep conference that we are organising in January.

What should I do if I don’t know who my rep is? Over the next few weeks your student rep should be making themselves know to you and your class, if you would like to know before then please drop into the Students’ Union Offices and the Representation team will let you know who your rep is.

What if we don’t have a rep for our course? If you are interested in becoming the student rep contact the representation team, details at the end of this article. Alternatively you can drop into the Students’ Union Offices and we’ll have a chat with you about it. If you want to give your feedback about the course please drop it in an e-mail to the representation team.

I’m not a student rep, how can I support my rep? One of the hardest things for a rep to do is get feedback from their class. So you can help your student rep by thinking about your course and feeding back to them about any issues that you think need resolving along with any good practice that you think needs shouting from the roof tops.

We already have a rep - how can I get involved? The elections for student rep for 2017/18 are being held Monday 6 - Friday 10 March with the nomination deadline at noon on Friday 3 March, this is your chance to get elected as your classes rep. If you are interested in getting involved in representation straight away then you can also attend Union Council, Thursday 8 December 5pm S3.04 High Wycombe campus is the next meeting, there are further opportunities throughout the year to get involved in focus groups and fill in surveys to give us your views contact the representation team if your interested.

For more information about representation or becoming a student rep please contact the Students’ Union Representation team. Email: surepresentation@bucks.ac.uk Call: 01494 601 600 Drop in: we're based in the Students’ Union offices on the ground floor of North Wing in High Wycombe, and on the first floor, near Pulse in Uxbridge.

NEW OFFICER POSITIONS

At Bucks Students’ Union we tenaciously endeavour to make life better for students at Bucks. Bring the summer the Bucks Students’ Union Sabbatical team decided that they wanted to find out more from some of our underrepresented groups. Hearing direct from these student groups is important to make sure that we are not making assumptions about their student experience. One of a number of initiatives that we are taking forward is the part time officer roles, eight part time volunteer officers who will represent the voice of their group.

In the October election students nominated themselves in six of the eight roles and after a bit of a slow start there were a couple of close elections but we have six new part time officers.

Each of the groups that the part time officers represent are students that have their own unique challenges along with some other challenges that are common across a number of student groups. In order for us to better deal with these issues we need to know the issues inside and out and as part of that seeing it from those students perspective is high on the agenda.

As the term for each of these roles ends at the end of the academic year, The 2017/18 roles will be up for election in March, so if you want to run please let us knew by registering your interest at bucksstudentsunion.org/representation and we will keep you posted with regular updates and key information.

Four of the roles are self-defining, including BME (Black Minority and Ethnic) Officer, Disabled Officer, LGBT+ Officer and Women’s Officer. The other four part time officer roles are based on your entry data when you start university. Any students from outside of the UK are represented by the International Officer. Any students who are over 21 when they started university are represented by the Mature Officer.

If you are a part-time student or a postgraduate student and are interested in representing the views of a larger group of students then please contact the representation team. surepresentation@bucks.ac.uk 01494 601 600

Faculty Officers.

Meet the

Faculty Officers by Mark Sweeney

This article draws attention to your newly recruited faculty officers for the academic year of 2016/17 and inform you as to how their roles will help to improve your student experience whilst studying at Bucks. Each year, the representation team recruit four faculty officers to assist them in rolling out effective representation across the university. This is usually made up of two students from the Design, Media and Management Faculty and two students from the faculty of Society and Health. This year’s Faculty Officers for Design, Media and Management are Benjamin Parmar – a 3rd Year Film and Television student and Dan Dedman – a 3rd year Air Transport with Commercial Pilot Training student. Our two faculty officers for Society and Health are Kat Frei – a 3rd year Psychology and Sociology student and Katherine Bower – a 2nd year Child Nursing student. As faculty officers, Ben, Dan, Kat and Katherine head up representation in their respective areas, giving them the best chance of making the changes you want to see. Ben is attached to the school of Arts and Creative Industries and Dan to Management and Professional Studies. Kat works on Health and Social Sciences and Katherine looks after all of our Pre-Qualifying Nursing Programmes based in Uxbridge.

It is their responsibility to liaise with student and senior reps to ensure that they can get a real understanding of the issues affecting students across the variety of courses within their respective faculty. They gather and report the feedback of reps to the Students’ Union whilst also contributing to the formulation of Students’ Union policy on a number of issues regarding the whole student experience. They are expected to be a credible voice for these policies at Student Experience Committees, Faculty Student Experience Committees, Library forums and the Faculty Quality & Enhancement Committee influencing the whole experience of students at Bucks New University. We’ve asked each of the faculty officers to introduce themselves and tell you as to why they got into representation with Bucks Students’ Union. There’s also a picture of each them so if you see them around the campuses, you can stop them and say hello. If you have any questions for any of them or would like to find out more about representation and how they can assist you, then do not hesitate to get in touch!

Ben Parmar

Kat Frei

Hello :) My name is Ben Parmar and I am a 3rd Year Film and Television Production student as well as being one of Bucks Students' Union's four Faculty Officers. We each have a one of the University's four Schools to represent and look after over the duration of this academic year, ensuring all departments, courses and students are represented properly and effectively. The School of Art and Creative Industries is my domain and covers all of the Design and Media courses within the Faculty of Design, Media and Management (DMM). So if you're on a Creative or Performing course then I'm your Faculty Officer and here to help you however I can. If you have any questions or queries, or anything at all, don't hesitate to drop me an email at benjamin.parmar@bucks.ac.uk.

My name is Kat Frei and I am a 3rd year psychology and sociology student. I am the Faculty Officer for Society and Health this year and I hope to promote the importance of student representation here at Bucks New University, more specifically in my school of Health and Social Sciences. We are incredibly lucky that we have an extremely supportive Students Union who really care about students and what is important to them. I wanted to be part of the representation team as I feel very passionately about students getting the best out of their University experience and for them to understand that their voice is important, whilst also highlighting how they have the ability to shape their course for themselves and for future students. If you have any issues, my email address is kat.frei@bucks.ac.uk.

Dan Dedman

Katherine Bower

Hi, I'm Dan Dedman, third year BSc (Hons) Air Transport with Commercial Pilot Training Student and Faculty Officer for Design Media and Management. I got into representation to help students resolve any problems they have with their course or issues with the university itself. As faculty officer this year, I plan to work closely with the student reps and senior reps as well as academic and union staff to better the student experience throughout their time here at Bucks. So if you’re studying on a Management or a Professional Studies course, please get in touch with me on daniel.dedman@bucks.ac.uk if you have any issues or would like to share any good practice in and around your course.

Hello everyone, my name's Katherine. I'm a Second Year Child Nursing student and one of two Faculty Officers for Society and Health. As part of my role, I represent and put across to academics any issues or points of concern within the Pre-Qualifying Nursing School. I also put across any areas in which we are excelling at, and that we as a Nursing department are proud of. I wanted to take a lead in the representation side of University as I want to be able to help both myself and fellow students get the most out of their time whilst studying at Bucks. For my year ahead as a Faculty Officer, I would like to work closely with the Nursing students to make sure that they are happy with the course as a whole and improve their overall student experience as much as possible. Additionally, I would like to ensure that the necessary support is provided for students when on placement, working closely with academics and the Students' Union to do so. If you see me around campus come and say hi, and if you have any questions please feel free to email me on katherine.bower@bucks.ac.uk!

LOOK AFTER THE PENNIES...

Take a moment and imagine what it would be like to make the money that you have in your back pocket/wallet/purse, and bank account go that little bit further. If this is a desire that you have you can achieve it by budgeting and planning ahead. A budget can be as simple or as detailed as you like. The easiest way to do it is to list your income and expenditure. Here are some tips on how to create a simple budget: 1. Know your income Do you know how much you are paid from your student funding? Do you know how much your wages are each week/month? Before you can plan how you are going to spend, you need to know what you have got and how often you are going to get it. Your student loan is paid in three instalments, so by the middle to end of the term you might find yourself starting to struggle. If you get an NHS bursary you get a monthly payment as well as the smaller, termly student loan payments. Remember to add in how much you earn from any work that you do. Also remember that you should include benefits that are paid to you in your list. 2. What are your fixed costs? Fixed costs are those cost that won’t change in how much they are throughout the year. An example of this is your rent or gym fees. 3. What are your variable costs? Slightly more tricky because as the name suggests these costs tend to change throughout the year. Variable costs can include mobile phone contracts, utilities or other amounts that you obligated to pay that will change in value dependent on usage. Try looking for the average amount that you pay, and use that figure.

At this point you have the budget in front of you and you will be able to see if you are in a surplus or a deficit. If it is possible, try and turn your variables into fixed costs by restricting spending on them. For example if your mobile phone contract is always above the monthly fee, look at what you are spending the extra amount on and speak to your provider to see if they can adjust the amounts so that you don’t overspend. Or if you are at the end of your contract, look for one that suits you better. Remember the Wi-Fi at the university is free to students, and you might save further by using Wi-Fi provided for free by other businesses. You may want to look at maximising your income by increasing the hours you work or working during the breaks from university. Now you know how much you have, you can start to plan how you are going to spend on essentials such as food, travel etc. Think about how you can save on costs like these by cooking with housemates, making your own lunch instead of buying whilst out, walking or cycling short distances instead of catching the bus or train. Note down how much you are going to spend on shopping, travelling and try and stick to it. The Students’ Union Advice Centre are able to help you with budgeting, advising on how to save money, as well as looking at the longer term by assisting you with forecasting your finances over a year. If you are in need of additional funding the advice centre can help with looking for any potential funds available to you. You can contact the service by calling 01494 603 016 at High Wycombe, 01494 605 180 at Uxbridge, or by emailing suadvice@bucks.ac.uk. DELICIOUS BUTTER COOKIES You will need:

−− 125g of butter (prepare earlier so it’s soft) −− 90g (3/4 cup) of sugar −− 1 egg −− 175g (1 cup) of flour −− 1 tsp of baking powder −− A piece of baking paper and a tray −− (optional) 1 tsp of vanilla essence −− (optional) Chocolate, chocolate chips, nuts, cinnamon, raisins - whatever your favourite flavour is!

Method: 1. Mix all the dry ingredients in a big bowl together. It will be flour, sugar and baking powder. 2. Add egg to your mixture. To make the dough smoother, you can whisk the egg slightly before mixing it with the rest. 3. Cut the butter into small cubes and add to your bowl. 4. Add a tablespoon of vanilla essence if you want your cookies to smell even better. 5. To combine all the ingredients, use a big wooden spoon or a whisk. You can also use hands. When you finish mixing everything together, dough can feel a bit dry but that’s just because the butter isn’t warm/ soft enough. Keep on mixing until it’s all combined, sticky and yellow. The more you work on it the more sticky and liquid it will become. 6. At this point you can personalise your cookies a bit if you wish to. Add chocolate, nuts, a bit of cinnamon or whatever else you think is going to make them taste even more yummy.

7. Start preheating your oven to about 180°C 8. You’ll need two teaspoons. Lay a piece of baking paper onto the tray and start filling it with small balls of dough. Using two teaspoons, create small drops of the cookie dough, roughly the size of a ping pong ball. Remember to leave some space between your cookies as they will grow much bigger. If one tray is not enough, place cookies evenly on two trays. 9. When you’re done, carefully place trays in the oven. You should bake cookies for about 10 to 12 minutes, until they’re golden. If you’re not sure if they’re done, you can use a knife to lift one of them – if the bottom is golden and the dough doesn’t feel liquid anymore, the cookies are done. 10. Take the trays out and carefully move cookies onto a big plate to let them cool down. Immediately after taking them out of the oven they may seem a bit too soft, but they will get crispier when they’re colder.

Make a cup of tea and enjoy your delicious butter cookies!

You could even offer to make them dinner or some baked goods to ease any tension. Normally things will resolve themselves but if they don’t maybe its best to be the bigger person and apologise; even if it wasn’t your fault. This almost always resolves any tension between people and can make things calm and happy again. I hope this helps. - Miss Diagnosed

I’m not very happy in the dorm that I live in. They aren’t very friendly towards me even though I have tried to befriend them on countless occasions. I don’t particularly want to move unless it is a last resort. Is there anything you can suggest to help me? - Anonymous If they aren’t being friendly towards you, even when you try to befriend them, perhaps you are trying too hard to make them your friend. Sadly we cannot make people like us. In all honesty, I do suggest you move if you are that unhappy. There is no point staying in your dorm if you are feeling miserable, your room is supposed to be your safe haven and if you don’t feel happy that can have an effect on your life at university. I suggest talking to the accommodation team about your situation and maybe your senior resident as I’m sure they will be understanding and support you in the right decision for you and your university life. I hope this helps. - Miss Diagnosed

WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH So many students are out there doing their own personal hobbies, day in and day out, including me. I wanted to share my story; as it’s not every day you get to claim yourself as 30th in the World at something (even though it may not be a sport many are aware of). Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) is also known as a ‘Tough Mudder’ or a ‘Spartan Race’. You’ll see many people throwing themselves in mud, over walls, lifting objects for miles, and completing brutal rigs. In October, I was fortunate enough to attend the World Championships in OCR after qualifying at three separate events in my age category of 18-24. I saved every single penny I had made over summer, and paid for myself to go to Canada for 5 days, to show the world what I had. The course itself was in the most beautiful setting in the Blue Mountains, ON, Canada. I knew there were cable carts to the top of the mountain and that the hills were steep, the climate was far hotter than expected and something I just couldn't adjust to. I expected a tough course, however, I didn't expect it to break me the way it did; only 15km (9.3 miles) and yet it took me four hours to complete. The elevation of the course itself, meant that I ran the equivalent of the height of the Shard THREE TIMES. Yet the terrain is not even considered an ‘obstacle’, there were 50 physical obstacles that stood in my path, deterring me from finishing. Some obstacles were simply; crawling under barbed wire, or climbing a 20ft high rope; even throwing

yourself over an 8ft wall seemed simple compared to the rest. Describing them would be nearly impossible, but just for a taste, Google the obstacles: “Dragon's Back” “Skull Valley OCRWC16” “Stairway to Heaven” - alongside their caliber, there were Platinum Rigs (this is where I regrettably lost my ‘band’) and hanging climbing walls. The band - something you are given at the beginning of the race, a coveted trophy that not everyone receives like they do a finishers medal. You can attempt the obstacle as many times as you like, but if you are longer than five hours on a course, you are disqualified, and if you cannot complete an obstacle, you surrender your band. It sounds small, and in reality it is. The band carries a sense of accomplishment; it makes your completion of something great even greater. Competitors regularly cry at the loss of their band. For me, it was a relief - a weight off my shoulder because the race just became about completion after that. The World Championships, alongside the entire OCR community, is just unreal. The support, dedication and determination of every single person to not only complete the course but to also get their peers to, astounds me every time I see it. If you have ever said to yourself “I’d love to do a Mud Run”, contact me, I’ll point you in the right direction of a great race.

Creative writing.

By Jessica Miles, Aga Król & Chloe Bampton

CREATIVE WRITING I am who I say I am. That’s all that needs to be known. By you, by your friends, by the whole world that surrounds us and it is important that everyone should remember this. I choose to be the princess who needs saving from time to time, but I also choose to be the prince that saves me. I am the hero, the villain, the sidekick, and the love interest, all rolled into one. I am the monster that is hunted as well as the hunter itself. I am the writer, the dancer, the painter, the thief, the child, the parent, the lay-about, the nobody, the important and the unimportant in every story that has ever been told. My life is my own movie and I choose the role that I play, along with how the movie will end. I will choose how the big action scenes are and how the romantic scenes will play out; these are my decisions and mine alone. No one directing me, no one writing the lines that I speak. Just me. Acting in an epic movie that lasts as long as it possibly can, until the day I can no longer continue.

We are told to think outside the box; not knowing that the box we've been given is surrounded by a larger box. We are given a frame and told to paint inside it, and although we think about painting outside that frame, no one has ever suggested that we remove the frame itself. Because it simply hasn't been done before. We are everything we could possibly imagine. But only if we imagine the possibilities to begin with, otherwise we are told what we are and we are shaped and moulded accordingly to fit that frame. I am the princess, the prince, the dragon, the hero and the villain. I'm the football star, the dancer, the poet, the writer, and the painter. I'm the guardian, the monster, the fairy, the angel, the demon and the fighter in the middle of the battle. I'm the moral support, the immoral support, the friend and the enemy. I am who I say I am... I guess that's all that needs to be known.

After a long time Standing in front of the crowd, nervously waiting, wanting to speak but nothing is coming out, I struggle to get my words but still I want to say something. How am I supposed to say something but nothing is coming out? Like, I know I have a voice but my voice isn't working right now. How am I supposed to show you what I want to say? Standing in front of the crowd, looking at the people who are staring at you, making you feel conflicted about the way you are feeling. I want to scream but can't! I want to run but I can't! I open my mouth trying to speak or say something which interests me but nothing is coming out. The world is still, nothing is moving. What is going on? My brain hurts! My legs hurt! What am I doing? I'm ever so conflicted, I want to be happy with myself and worth whoever I am but I can't speak! I can't make the world better because

You know that weird, clammy, unpleasant thing that sometimes gets stuck in your chest, throat or stomach? It’s so sticky and stubborn that you feel you need to vomit, cough or scream to get rid of it. It makes you sweat, shiver, sometimes even cry. I know it’s weird, but I’m sure you recognize it. It just happens to appear suddenly. You have no option but to hang on to this… something. It just won’t vanish. Hold on. I think I know what it’s called. It’s called feelings. Feelings caused by words your dearest have said. Words you’ll remember forever. By Aga Król

By Jessica Miles

I'm a girl who's stuck in time! Who is this person who wants to break free and live a life where she can be happy! So today I tried to speak and nothing came out but it's okay because there's always tomorrow, right? Running away from everything is like a heartbroken girl who just got her heart ripped out by a boy she thought she loved, from our voice because we can't speak no one understands us and what we go through. My life, my rules! STOP! I have NO voice. My mind is up made up, 3000 voices are speaking but mine isn't working and I can’t seem to find out why? I don't know why. I want to find out but I don't think that would do any good to me. Because I speak, not all at! My mind wants to speak out but still something is holding me back. Why is my head spinning in circles? Why can't I speak when others can?

I'm losing my mind. I tried to speak again today and nothing came out. Maybe I just wasn't meant to speak. You don't have a voice, because no one wants to listen to your excuses, you don't have a voice. Things are different. I can't speak because I don't have a voice. My life is so different to all of yours and I don't like talking to people but today I wanted to speak but I didn't because I thought no one wants to listen to me. Everything is different! I like seeing other people and picturing my life with and without them. But I don't speak I stand still and listen, taking back what everyone else says because I'm different. I'm not like the rest of you. But today I really wanted to speak and I eventually did, I'm happy with myself because someone finally heard my voice! by Chloe Bampton

FIRST LOOK AT NINTENDO SWITCH Nintendo recently revealed their new home console, (previously known as The Nintendo NX), The Nintendo Switch. They did so via a short presentation on YouTube called: ‘First look at Nintendo Switch’. The video details the system's features and examples of typical day to day uses.

The handheld functionality works like this: In the dock is the console itself, which when removed resembles a tablet. You can break apart the Joy-con grip controller removing the two sides, before sliding them to either side of the tablet. Now you have a handheld system, much like the 3DS it is completely portable. Unlike the Wii U, you don't need to worry about how far away you are from the console. He also demonstrated that the two Joy-cons that you slide on either side of the console, can be removed and control the system wirelessly (much like a Wii remote and nunchuck). When doing this they also showed the tablet which is now acting as a screen, has a stand for you to place it down while playing. Those Joy-cons can also be used as individual controllers. One clip shows what seems to be some kind of local wireless multiplayer. Two screens and possibly more can hook up together, so you can play with your friends much like Nintendo's previous handheld consoles. The first game shown in this video was the upcoming: ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’, which will be coming to Wii U as well as the Nintendo Switch. We also got a look at an enhanced version of ‘Mario Kart 8’ - all we have seen in terms of new content so far is a new character called King Boo from Luigi's Mansion, another enhanced port was shown and that was Splatoon. The clip showed each character having different hair styles, hinting at the possibility of more customisation of your character.

One of the more fascinating things shown is a brand new Mario title. We only got a few seconds of footage but it looks like a successor to Mario Galaxy. Another interesting title is ‘The Elderscrolls V Skyrim: Remastered’. Bethesda commented on its appearance in the ad saying; “We’re happy to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Nintendo on the video,” a Bethesda spokesperson told gamesindustry. biz. “While we are not confirming any specific titles at this time, we are pleased to announce our partnership with Nintendo and support of the Switch. We look forward to revealing specific games and details in the future.” In regards to the physical media in which these games will be stored, the system uses cards much like the 3DS. Nintendo have confirmed that the system will not physically be backwards compatible with previous consoles. This doesn't completely rule out the possibility in it supporting digital versions, but they have yet to comment on that. In closing; I am rather confident in the Nintendo Switch's success. They are taking the most profitable aspect of their business, (which is their handheld devices) and expanding on them. Having all your Nintendo titles on one platform, as well as other multiplatform games is rather enticing. We don't have long to wait for more news but Nintendo has said we won't get any more this year. There is a Nintendo Switch presentation in Tokyo on Thursday 12 January 2017, with the system itself is scheduled for release the following March.

The year was 1990, the age of the NES had passed, and Nintendo wanted to bring their gaming magic to their newest console the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System). Following the success of Super Mario Bros 3, Nintendo decided to give the masses what they wanted: A brand new Super Mario game. Enter Super Mario World; which, incidentally, was a launch title for the SNES and brought the Mario magic to a brand new level. Super Mario world is considered by many gamers to be one of the best or possibly the best 2D platform game of all time. The plot of the game is as follows: Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach and Mario must go and save her. Well, that didn’t take very long now, did it? In terms of in-game mechanics, the game only brought two new things to the Mario franchise: The feather cape and everyone’s favourite fruit-eating dinosaur, Yoshi. When Mario has the cape - if used

properly, the player can make Mario fly. Not hover, not glide but fly, which can allow you to break the game. The introduction of Yoshi not only brought a new character into the series but also brought a brand new way of dealing with enemies; either through spitting shells at enemies, or through a bizarre combination of Yoshi’s tongue and weird-as-hell stomach, to eat them. The in-game controls are what can only be described as perfect for Mario’s style of game play. The perfect mid-air controls and very responsive control scheme overall make the game play enjoyable for either a Mario veteran or a Gaming newbie. The game offers additional challenges through most stages having multiple exits, but you will need to find all of them in order to get a completed save file. You can also get additional challenges from the star world levels.

The game’s Bosses on the other hand, are so beyond easy that they are little more than annoyances. The Bosses are the Kooparlings (brought back from Mario Bros 3), and they are so simple to figure out and so easy to beat that the only evil thing they do is WASTE YOUR TIME! In terms of tips and helpful advice I can tell you:

• Always do the Switch Palace levels - they will save you so much hassle in the later levels.

• Look after Yoshi and Yoshi will look after you. • Check every pipe for either a shortcut or a life

mini-game; it will make progressing a lot easier.

Overall, Super Mario World is easily one of the most enjoyable platform games of all time, and I strongly recommend playing it for yourself. It’s currently available on the Nintendo e-shop for the Wii U and new Nintendo 3DS, so if you have one, give it a go and you will be in for a great time.

Adapted from the classic Marvel comic, Doctor Strange revolves around an arrogant but brilliant surgeon, Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), whose life changes when he is in a car accident and loses the use of his hands. After trying everything to heal them, traditional medicine failing him, Strange turns to an unusual healing source, taught to him by The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). Strange consequently discovers unseen dark forces, leading him down a path he never could have envisioned.

"I was extremely excited" People who know me, know I’m a massive Marvel fan. Whenever a new film is released I’m right there obsessing over trailers and going to midnight screenings. So you can imagine that when the trailer for Doctor Strange came out I was tad excited… Scratch that, I was extremely excited. Not only did the film have rave reviews and a star-spangled cast, the look and the style of the film seemed to differ from the Marvel films that had come before it, the trailer making it look more like Inception than anything thus sparking mass intrigue.

"Benedict Cumberbatch is irritatingly good in any role he takes on" Well I’m glad to say it doesn’t disappoint. The film is a whirl of mystery and action, making for a completely stunning and totally absorbing film. The cast manage to bring these unfamiliar characters to life, capturing the audience with witty and intelligent dialogue and strong performances all round. Although I suppose you can expect nothing less when your cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch, who is irritatingly good in any role he takes on, Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams (Christine Palmer), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Mordo) and Mads Mikkelsen (Kaecilius), just to name a few. Granted it had its faults, a few dragged out moments here and there but honestly these will not tarnish your enjoyment of the film. It is graphically amazing and truly highlights the lengths cinema has come since the jumpy black and white pictures of the early 1900s. This added a whole other dimension to the film, allowing for the perhaps slightly wacky premise to become completely immersive and spell bounding.irector Scott Derrickson really excelled at bringing this Marvel story to life, drawing away from tight spandexes and godlike heroes and adding a whole new light to the multiverse, one that anyone can enjoy.

"this film is definitely one to watch" So even if you’re not a Marvel fan, this film is still definitely one to watch. It is one that will keep you mesmerised for days and probably waving your arms in the air trying to teleport through time, or maybe that’s just me. This, of course, is definitely not the last we will see of Stephen Strange, the end credits will tell you this much. He’ll be gracing our cinema screens a lot sooner than you’d think, meaning we get to keep our dose of Strange a little longer.

Hello fellow sleep-deprived and stressed humans! If you are reading this article via the Bucks Student newspaper then this means you have decided to look up from the world that is your phone or iPad and have realised that there is a whole universe beyond that. If you are one of these strangelings - Don’t panic! You’re not ill. It just means that you are in search of something more… Active, fun and maybe a bit sporty (don’t let that word scare you off). There are numerous places you can find all of that, football, tennis, hockey, but I say to you: Why do that? Especially when you can do something… Different. Something that you wouldn’t think you would ever get to do… Something like Sabre:lite; a brand new Sport for Fun activity provided by British Fencing and delivered to you by Bucks Students’ Union. Sabre:lite is, for want of a better a word, a lighter version of Sabre fencing. There are fewer target areas and a slightly different points system. It is an activity intended to urge people to enjoy themselves as they explore the wonderful world of fencing. Most members are first timers. Students with a slightly more experienced hand at fencing are also welcome to the group, as they can share their experiences and techniques. This means that all members of the group help each other out, especially when it comes to encouraging beginners. Even members in their second session will welcome new people to the group and help those new appearances enjoy the game. Here at Sabre:lite we don’t just spread into groups and hit each other - although that can be fun. We start from the beginning, teaching health and safety: like how to use the equipment without hurting yourself (or someone else). We get you warmed up and explain how the footwork performs, then we get you suited up and show you how to attack with the three basic hits and defences against them, the most import one being… How to run away! We also play numerous games with the equipment, all of them

teaching you how to better your techniques and make you a better swordsman whilst having fun. Now, if you’re sitting there, drinking your Pumpkin Spice Latte thinking, “Oooh I don’t know, getting hit by swords doesn’t sound like too much fun - it could hurt!”... Don’t worry. The equipment we use is indeed safe; it comes with professional fencing masks, padded jackets and gloves. So when you have some free time on a Monday from 7.30-9pm, come on down to Dance Studio 2 and get all padded up and ready to vent your Uni frustration.

BUCKS BADMINTON IS ON THE UP!

After a hugely successful year last year, Bucks Badminton is already making great strides. With a newly formed Committee, a new Sport for Fun Ambassador and committed, passionate Captains, Badminton has the tools to be a fantastic and leading society this year.

Dan Lewis, our new chairman and Sport for Fun Ambassador has taken charge of the society. With our Sport for Fun programme we are looking to get people into Badminton. This is a casual session, with no training exercises, stipulations or fitness. You simply come along, and play. We provide rackets, shuttles all free of charge. On Tuesdays, we have music themed weeks, from 90s to High School Music, Boy Bands to Girls Week! We had a record number of new attendees last year, and aim to beat that this year. Rotating on and off the court is dealt with quickly, so you’ll never be off for too long. It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, socialise and it will become a routine into your week. Sport for Fun times run from 5-6pm Tuesdays, and 6.30-7.30pm Thursdays. Team training follows the Sport for Fun session on Tuesdays, running from 6-7.30pm. This is a great way to improve your Badminton skills. We start by splitting the singles and doubles players into two groups, so we can focus on

the key attributes and skill sets. We focus on technical aspect with each different shot, tactical play and footwork. Each exercise, and the entire hour and thirty minutes is designed to help the team and the rest of the squad on game day. Wednesdays as with others teams, is game day. We have six players in each team, two singles players and two doubles pairs. Each player and doubles pair plays two matches, with a best of three games. The score is out of eight. Playing other university’s competitively aids development and is a great experience. We encourage everyone to want to train with us. However, with only having a small team and squad, I would encourage you to come and talk to David Tungate (Men’s Captain) or Jen Stones (Women’s Captain) first. Straight after our games, in the evening we have our socials! Our new social secretary Sophie Dale is doing a brilliant job putting on events to enjoy. Each week has a different theme, from Hawaiian to Recession Dressin’. We have them regularly, and do involve drinking. We do however encourage all non-drinkers to come along, you’ll still have a great time. In 2017, Bucks Badminton is going on tour for their second year! We’ll have more themed nights and it’s a fantastic experience that you can’t miss. We’re all really excited to go to Croatia! Please join and like our social media pages; Facebook – BNU Badminton Club Twitter – @BucksBadminton Snapchat – bucksbadders Most of our information gets posted on our Facebook account, so be sure to join so you know what’s going on.

BUCKS RUGBY ROUNDUP TOUCH RUGBY

MEN’S RUGBY

Hey guys, my name is Ryan and I am the chair of touch rugby. We were a new society last year. Took off better than we expected with an increase of female participants. We are funded and branded by o2 touch who provide us with kit and a music system that we play music with every session so there is more of a vibe when playing touch. We open this society to anyone, from recovering injuries to regular players and new players and teach you guys the rules and to give you some enjoyment playing the sport.

Were back into a new sporting season for bucks men’s rugby fielding two teams this year, thankfully due to a successful sign up from fresher’s fair. But always looking to recruit new players from any standard, whether you are new to the game or coming back to the game after a few years out, this doesn’t bother us we can train you and get you playing in the famous Red and Black colours. The start of the season has been a mixed of results with the 1st team having some wins and some loses and the 2nd team have lost the first couple of games, but have now starting to rebuild from these sets backs and looking to grow stronger week by week.

Exciting news this year, as we have come back to the new academic year, we are proud to announce we have brand new playing kit this year and also we will be competing for the university for the first time. We as a society are excited and we need you guys to come along and try it out and learn the rules so we can put you guys in the kit and give you that opportunity to represent your university whilst having fun and playing friends and new friends. We train once a week on Sundays 2-4pm down at The Rye, outside the lido which is positioned in the middle of the Rye. It would be great to get some new players down and teach you guys to play whilst having fun. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email me - I am happy to help. ryanmorrell94@outlook.com.

We have some events and fixtures coming up, both teams are home for the next fixture, the 1s are facing the Infamous Chichester Uni and the 2s face a big Sussex 2s side. Not that these two teams should cause us an issue on our home turf. So if you have any free time on a Wednesday come on down to Kingsmead with friends and support our boys representing our University with pride. We are also as a club will be partaking in a famous cancer campaign that happens in November. This is called Movember, where guys do not shave their moustaches for a month and raise money to see how long it takes until the boys cave in and shave it off. Most of us will hold out and get someone else to shave it off us at the Movember event that happens at the end of November.

BUCKS FC: MATCH REPORT

After finishing second in the league, winning Varsity, and a summer which saw six first team regulars graduate – rebuilding a squad capable of competing at the same level to previous seasons sounded like an immense challenge. However, an extremely talented influx of freshers has seen the Men’s Football 1st team enjoy an undefeated start to the season. Taking maximum points from their two appearances this season, the team find themselves level on points at the top of the BUCs South Eastern 3A League with Roehampton’s 1st team. Kicking off the season at home to St. Mary’s 2nd, the team found themselves 1-0 down after dominating the early stages of the match, the visitors taking the lead from the penalty spot in the 35th minute. A rally from the boys saw them level the affair just before the half-time whistle, debutant Raiqwan Joseph putting away a quickly taken free kick.

AN UNDEFEATED START TO THE SEASON Bucks came out in the second half, and the dazzling football on display proved to be too much for the visitors. Harry Phipps, another fresher making his debut – put Bucks ahead with a composed finished from the edge of the box, following a brilliant team

move straight from the training ground. The gap between the sides was extended soon after, Sodike Anyadike netting from a corner to make it 3-1. A lapse in concentration during extra time saw St Mary’s pull a goal back, which was followed shortly after by the final whistle. With the majority of the team being made up of freshers, taking all three points in their first taste of University football makes the result all the more satisfying.

Some pressing play forced an error from the Pompy defence, Tyler Prince was brought down in the box, which gave Captain Ben French the opportunity to put Bucks ahead from the spot. After taking the lead, the team began to express themselves and playing with an extra man, chances followed. A superb solo goal from Isaac Olorunfemi doubled the lead with 10 minutes left on the clock.

The three points were secured in the final 10 minutes, when Sodike Anyadike found himself one-on-one with Next up for Bucks FC 1st XI was a trip down to the the Portsmouth goalie. Retaining his cool, Anyadike south coast, away to Portsmouth’s 2nd. A frustrating start to the game saw Portsmouth down to 10 men after lifted the ball over the oncoming keeper, sealing a 3-0 away win for Bucks FC. tempers flared, and the fixture goalless at the interval. Although only two matches have been played, there have been some outstanding displays from new members of the team – proving they’re more than equipped to compete at this level. Second and third year members of the team have shown the new recruits the level of performance that’s expected of them, and together a great team spirit has been created. A team that are willing to work for each other, show great game management and tactical awareness, and with more than enough ability – a very promising season lies ahead.
