COLD ISN'T IT!?
It’s most definitely big coat weather, hot food, porridge and movie season. Make sure you check out our film review section, we all love a good recommendation - and there’s nothing worse than paying for the cinema to see a film that’s not that great, but a cup of tea and a movie is perfect for me this time of year. Cineworld has a really good selection of films and we have a movie night here at the Students' Union every month, so make sure you head down for that too!
asleep to; you might even be able to persuade your house mates to make you a cuppa if you provide the biscuits!
It’s really important to look after yourself this time of year though. Everyone is sneezing or blowing their nose and with the stress of deadlines approaching, it can be so easy to fall ill So make sure you eat well and wrap up warm. Our cooking section is continuing so flick through to see if you like the look If that doesn’t take your fancy, Blue Planet has started again, with David Attenborough providing the of our easy winter recipe. Even though it’s really hard to get out when it’s cold perfect Sunday watching to get cosy with and fall
and dark, exercise is really good for keeping you healthy, and with the launch of the #BucksGirlsCan campaign starting, there is no excuse! It’s crazy how fast time flies at Uni, and the Christmas holiday is less than a month away. If you’re a Fresher, take this time to realise how you really have to jump on every opportunity quickly here at Uni, or time will pass you buy and you’ll wish you had been more involved. Ask any third year, they’ll vouch for that one! Until next edition, Liv x
AN UPDATE FROM YOUR SABBS BEN PARMAR PRESIDENT
LAUREN O'SHEA JIMI ADEYINKA VICE PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT EDUCATION & WELFARE STUDENT INVOLVEMENT
Where oh where has the first term gone? It’s crazy to think Christmas is on the horizon and 2018 is just around the corner! I hope you’ve all enjoyed the academic year so far and are looking forward to a welldeserved break over the festive holidays.
The festive lights are shining brightly in the town centre and decorated trees are popping up here and there, the countdown to Christmas is imminent. I hope everyone has well and truly settled into their lives here at Bucks and are still managing to just make that 9am lecture.
While 2017 has been one of the most enjoyable and achievement filled years of my life, having graduated with a first-class degree and elected into this role, I’ll be having a good old think about what I want from my 2018 while I put my feet up over the holidays, and I can’t urge you enough to do the same. Reflect on your 2017. What did you do well? What could you have done better? What do you wish you had done? What do you wish you hadn’t done? Think about what you want and what you need to do to achieve that, strive to make your 2018 better than your 2017.
I’ve settled into my role and am kept busy attending working groups and committees where I represent you, the students. Recently a lot of my time has been spent on the Big White Wall and the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).
As I mentioned at our recent Union Council, Big White Wall is an online service, free to students and staff where you can get professional support 24/7, take control and feel better. It is a safe space where you can get things off your chest, explore your Enjoy your time away from university but be ready and feelings and learn how to improve your mental health rearing to go when you return in January to take your and wellbeing. I will provide a short update on the studies on full force! And as always, we are always here TEF next issue! to make life better for you guys at Bucks!
For the month of November signifies the end of the year as we all look forward to Christmas and the New Year. It’s a chance to look back at what we have achieved this year. We filmed the first episode of Battle of the Sabbs to promote some of the activities we offer here at the Students' Union. Starting with Sport for Fun sessions in which I and VPEW, Lauren O'Shea compete against each other in each episode. The loser does a forfeit. Look out for our video soon. Also, the launch of #BucksGirlsCan which is associated with Sports England’s This Girl Can campaign to encourage women to get moving, regardless of shape, age and ability. What people don’t realise is that physical activity is a great way to relax and release stress. As the term comes to an end it and the new year coming and you are thinking of a new year resolution why not consider being more physically active, by taking the stairs instead of the lift. Stand or go for a walk instead of seating at home all day. Changing small habits to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

HOT STUFF Just like mum used to make! Here’s our brilliant homemade toad in the hole recipe that takes as little as 40 minutes. A perfect winter warmer for these long, cold, winter nights. Toad in the Hole: This recipe serves two, so half and multiply by the number of people you’re cooking for.
What you need to have: What you need to do: −−4 sausages
1. Drizzle oil around a baking tin and place in
−−75g plain flour
the oven for about 10 minutes at 2000C.
−−2 eggs
2. Add the sausages and cook in the oven for 10 minutes.
−−200ml milk −−1 tsp oil
3. While the sausages cook, add the flour to a big bowl and whisk in the milk and eggs gradually until you have a smooth, runny batter. 4. Once the sausages have been in the oven for ten minutes, turn them and pour the batter over them, making sure not to cover the sausages with the batter. Place back in the oven for 20-30 minutes or until the Yorkshire pudding is golden brown. 5. Once the batter is crisp and golden, remove from the oven and serve with mashed potatoes, vegetables and plenty of gravy.
If you love to cook and want to write for this section, please email editor@thebucksstudent.com.
Christmas on a budget Can’t you just smell the cinnamon biscuits and turkey already? It might be a bit early for Christmas but seeing as we all pack up to go back to our family homes on the Saturday 16 December, we’ve not got much time left for Secret Santa and decorations here at uni! Putting up the tree to Michael Bublé or making paper-chains singing along to Mariah Carey; decorating is one of the most fun and festive things to do at Christmas. Many shops in the high-street offer decorations but to get cheap and whimsical deals you could get a simple 3ft tree, string lights and a 48-piece bauble set from Argos for under £15! You could even save more by customising your tree and decorating it using DIY decorations attached with ribbon. Along with your stockings and Christmas ornaments, you can line the stairs with tinsel; decorate the living room with bunting; add a candle arrangement on the table and even put spray-on snow on the windows (with your paper snowflakes of course!), giving you the warm festive feeling in an instant. From your paper-chain strips and bunting to your gingerbread houses, getting creative is another way to get into the Christmas spirt. You can create your own countdown to the joyful event, by decorating a mini blackboard and add your own finesse to it. Something that has been trendy for the past couple of years is making your door look like a gift. Again, this could easily be done by wrapping thick ribbon around your door in a vertical cross and sticking a bow in the centre of the cross. Another trend is making your own wreaths out of strips of green card. You simply stick the ends of the strips together around a paper plate with the middle cut out. You can then decorate them with pompoms and sequins. DIY cutlery holders can also add a simple yet whimsical touch to Christmas dinner. You can simply make these out of loo roll card. By squashing the roll down, you can then decorate it to look festive, such as a Santa suit, and then slot your napkin and cutlery into the middle. As for gifts, there are many shops that sell cute gift sets, shortbread, chocolates, and even cute pyjama and slipper sets, which can be simple gift ideas for your families and secret Santa presents. Something that is very easy and cheap to make is a jar of home baked treats or ‘hot chocolate in a jar’. To do
this you can fill a mason jar with hot chocolate powder and mini marshmallows, and finish this off by tying a ribbon and mini candy cane to the jar. For a bit of laughter in your gifts, many online companies and places, such as Wilko, sell novelty gifts. These novelty gifts can be joke presents and stocking fillers, which are also cheap and cheerful. To end all your hard work, your housemates and you can sit down with a Christmas meal and enjoy the end of your 2017. Merry Christmas!

BUCKS STUDENTS’ UNION ADVICE CENTRE MAKES THE GRADE Staff in Bucks Students’ Union Advice Centre are pleased to announce that this summer they passed the Advice Quality Standard (AQS), a nationally recognised quality mark for organisations providing free, independent advice to members of the public. Students’ Union CEO, Tristan Tipping said ‘We are so pleased to have been awarded the AQS as it shows our members as well as the University that we are working to the best possible professional standards. The team of staff have worked very hard to achieve the AQS and the Board will be making sure that they maintain these high standards over the course of the year.’ The AQS is awarded by the national umbrella group, the Advice Services Alliance. The ASA Director Lindsey Poole said: ‘The AQS is a tough benchmark to achieve, particularly in challenging times for the voluntary sector and our clients and we offer our congratulations to Bucks Students’ Union Advice Centre for so clearly making the grade.’

Rusty recommends.
November Issue
The venue is open seven days a week and sometimes it is difficult to decide which nights to go to - you may end up missing out on something amazing! Here are my recommendations for the next few weeks for those of you who like to experience something a bit different!
EVERY
F R I DAY
A club night like no other, Bamboo is a whole new beast, mixing buckets of Szechuan Sauce with the biggest dance floor fillers, to make sure your weekend gets off to a flying start. When we think of the club nights of yesteryear, we tend to think of the hours spent getting dressed to the nines, only to wait in a queue, worried you might freeze to death because you didn’t want to spend the extras on the cloak room, to then pay over the odds for someone to ruin your whole look with a massive smudgy stamp on the back of the hand and to discover that the warm embrace of the sweaty dance floor is only graced with the same old faces, the same old songs and the same old beer stairs across the floor… Bamboo is here to change all that. New for the 2017/18 year, Bamboo has risen from the ashes of SOAP, our old Friday night regular, to bring you a club experience like you’ve never experienced before. No doubt, we will still bring you a club night featuring a combination of your favourite tunes and great drinks deals well into the early hours, but with an ever revolving cast of weird and wonderful themes, Bamboo will create a memorable experience every single Friday of term! Every Friday will be a completely revamped theme, with past Bamboo nights including UV Paint Party, Hogwarts House Party, the big BamBOO! Halloween Ball, and live performances from The Stickmen.
From the time this goes to print, we will be opening our Friday night doors to non-students, meaning that you no longer have to decide which of your mates you like most, while you sign in just two of them – you can now bring along the whole gang, with no need to sign in! We will be selling non-student tickets on our Eventbrite page (and if you get here before 11.30pm, your mates will get in for free!) Not only this, but we have also introduced our brand new VK Bar, where you can treat yourself to 2 bottles for £5, or 5 bottles for £10, as well as the Christian Union’s Tea & Toast table, who give out free end-ofnight munchies, ensuring you can keep the party going into the early hours, and that your Saturday can be as graceful as possible… Long gone are dull DJs, over-priced drinks and dance floors you feel like you don’t belong on - if you haven’t had the chance yet, be sure to check out Bamboo before the Christmas break. Even if clubbing isn’t your thing, Bamboo creates an inclusive, fun-fuelled atmosphere that’ll have even the most back-to-the-wall part goers tapping their toes and getting involved! And as always… dress up is highly recommended!
The themes for the rest of this term are: 01/12 – Traffic Light Party 08/12 – Santa Con 15/12 – Rudolf’s Rave Want to join the Bamboo team? Email: suevents@bucks.ac.uk
WHAT’S YOUR PASSION? The Bucks Student newspaper is looking for current students to write articles - if you’re passionate about a subject, we’d love to hear from you. Can’t think of what to write? No problem! Join us at a Newsgroup meeting and we’ll give you a topic to write about. Our next meetings are in the Study Lounge (near Beats, opposite the Dance Studio) on Monday 27 November and Monday 22 January. Not only will you get your views and opinions out there, but being able to say your work has been published will look fantastic on your CV. For more information email the student editor, Liv, on editor@thebucksstudent.com.
The Wandering Hearts seem to have come from nowhere but it has been two years of hard work after chance meetings of Tim and Tara at a gig and AJ and Chess through mutual friends. It represented us all individually as well as our sound that we had been working really hard towards. a demo, a label discovered them, and a record deal with Decca soon followed. I met three out of four of The Wandering Hearts at their Bucks Coffee House session. Chris Stapleton is also an incredible singer and musician, I would say that he is the main artist that we all crush on and bond over. AJ: Yeah, it was one of those common interests. Despite having some artistic differences, he is definitely an influence that brings us all together. How would you describe your sound? Chess: In terms of genre, it’s difficult to define but we would probably call it Americana-folk. Americana in its essence is an umbrella term for country which we sometimes get comparisons to because of our focus on lyrics, song writing and melody. All things that country music really excels at. AJ: We do like to tell a bit of a story while stirring imagination and emotion. I think truthful lyricism and epic storytelling is synonymous with country music and that’s naturally why we get so many references to country music.

It’s essentially about accepting that a relationship has run its course and acknowledging that it’s time to call it a day but still wishing that you were in that early honeymoon period. You recently signed a deal with Decca, how did the deal come about? AJ: Our next single ‘Burning Bridges’ is out on Friday 17 November! ‘Wish I Could’ seemed like quite a logical choice because it was one of the first Chess: It’s exciting, busy and AJ is buzzing! songs we had actually written together as a band and it just ticked all the boxes

Film review: IT (2017).
By Adam Potter
This has been a British Fantasy Award-winning novel and a cult classic TV miniseries and now Stephen King's nightmarish saga is now a feature film. It was released early this past September and it's about time that it got reviewed. Why? Because not only is it a horror film but it is a creepy, scary, compelling horror story with layered, likeable main characters (think The Goonies from the mind of Mr. King himself), an interestingly despicable, dysfunctional supporting cast, creepy yet beautifully striking visuals and a fun, scary, threatening, demonic killer clown. Bill Skarsgard is to Tim Curry's Pennywise what Heath Ledger was to Jack Nicholson's Joker; the previous iteration is a creepy but hilariously goofy scenery-chewing ham while the newer version is darker, more sadistic but still retaining the fun and whimsy of a clown, even the whimsy part might make this Pennywise come across more horrifying. The opening scene, along with a few others, have and will forever stay with me after seeing this movie on the big screen, but all the while this whole movie is carried by a wonderful cast of young kids. All the kids were believable,
hilarious, quirky and relatable, each character stands out as their own personal fears are established through their inertial encounters with Pennywise The Dancing Clown who feeds off their fear through crazy, chilling visions. The visuals are again somewhat beautiful as well as having some brittleness to it; Andy Muschietti, the director of Mama (2013), directed this film wonderfully but what makes IT so profoundly unique and rich as a movie-going experience as well as a powerful, entertaining horror movie is that it truly is entertaining in its jump scares, shock value and laughs. The entire movie is a mix of pure scares and pure lightheartedness and innocence with, at its very heart, a haunting tale of social misfit children who are fighting to hold onto whatever innocence they may still have left in their troubled adolescence and in this greater fight against this evil supernatural clown, a fight that they will have to fight alone! IT seems like a colourful dark fantasy movie with an especially vibrant antagonist at its centre but this is absolutely not a kids’ movie, not even a horror film for
kids! The cinematography, special effects, visual effects, from the prosthetic makeup to the careful use and amount of CGI, all join to make the film an effectively unnerving experience and if you’re someone with a phobia of clowns then I would definitely advise that you NOT watch this movie. The point is to all parents and students who may have young relatives: do not take them to see IT. The film is bloody, gritty and horrific in a lot of places and there are a lot of jump scares, mostly in the least likely places, and there is a sense of dread and paranoia that carries throughout the movie. With all of that being said, IT is an eerie, bloody, slightly enchanting tale of horror from the pen of one of the greatest names in the genre and brought vividly to life by a promising filmmaker. And it might only be the beginning...
After a new evil nemesis takes Asgard, Thor (Chris Hemsworth, Rush) finds himself imprisoned on the other side of the universe. Trapped in a galactic gladiator arena, he is forced to fight his old friend and fellow avenger the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight) to the death and find a way back to Asgard, before Hela (Cate Blanchett, Carol) and her army destroy it. With the last stand-alone Thor film hitting the cinemas four years ago, it is safe to say that Thor: Ragnarok was eagerly anticipated by fans and the franchise in much need of reinventing. This film took us back into outa space and explored new worlds, offering a more comical outlook as opposed to the action-fest of Thor: Dark World. Taika Waititi (director, Hunt for the Wilderpeople) managed to not only bring back beloved characters but did so with a new lease of life, proving he was the right man to bring the Thor back with a bang. It is hard to pick where to start describing this film, it is epic and thoroughly enjoyable. The cast being highly responsible for a lot of this, mastering the dead pan comedy to
just the right effect. We saw the return of Loki (Tom Hiddleston, Skull Island) his usual, evil persona diminished, and a new smarter edge brought to the character, although it must be said it would have been good to see him feature more. Waititi also brought to life new characters such as Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson, Dear White People) who not only proved to be fearless, but damaged a side not often seen with superheroes. She also wasn’t there purely for the intent of being Thor’s new love interest, in fact the lack of force and cheesy romance was a welcome relief. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Marvel film if there wasn’t some sort of epic fight scene, which were all executed flawlessly. Waititi taking a leaf out of the Guardians of the Galaxy’s book, matching fight scenes with an epic soundtrack. It must be said, that it has been a while since I sat in the cinema and thoroughly enjoyed a film from start to finish, and not like felt it dragged. Although if I was to nit-pick a couple of the comical scenes were overplayed to the point where they were no longer funny. Furthermore, the film’s opening scene was a little pointless, used as narrative device which didn’t make much sense until the end. If I’m honest that’s my only major problem with the film, that and the second end scene credit (yes, I am one of those who stays until the very end of a marvel film) which there was no need for. Overall, it is pretty obvious that I enjoyed this film, I would even go so far as to say that it is the best of the Thor franchise. This is the type of film which you can enjoy even if you’re that big of a marvel fan, although there may be some plot elements and jokes that might not make a lot of sense, they are easily explained and wouldn’t ruin your enjoyment of the film.

LGBT+ Society.
By George Richards
LGBT+ SOCIETY AND CHRISTIAN UNION COLLABORATION On Thursday 9 November, LGBT+ Society went bowling with Christian Union, on our first sober social of the year. I have said since I started studying at Bucks last year, that it would be really cool for the LGBT+ Society to work with the Christian Union, because I have always felt that there is an unnecessary stigma about people being both religious, and being a part of the LGBT+ community.
So, when I was elected chair of the society, I made a list of things I wanted to accomplish, including build that very important bridge. I reached out to the Christian Union about working together to help end this stigma, and they immediately agreed that it was a long overdue collaboration. I was especially interested in making this collaboration work because people continuously use religion as an excuse to disrespect the LGBT+ community. I know this is an on-going issue due to the number of society members that feel uncomfortable being out and proud at home due to the beliefs of their family, but thankfully they have the LGBT+ society as a safe-space to be themselves unapologetically, without fear of rejection or judgement. I especially wanted to work with the Christian Union to combat this hate, because I know they are a group that promote nothing but
help, solidarity and a strong sense of community spirit, which are three morals that the LGBT+ Society fully support and endorse as well.
Straight off the bat, both societies decided to go bowling since it’s cheap, fun and allows for a lot of time to talk and get to know each other, then it took a few weeks to try and plan a date that worked best for both societies, but it was definitely worth the wait. It was admittedly a bit awkward at first getting to know each other, but as the evening went on, we all slowly started to find common interests and have a laugh. By the end of the night I definitely felt like I had made some new friends, and had built a very important bridge between two societies, that are normally seen as being polar opposites. I have since spoken with Lynsey Hall, the Treasurer of Christian Union, and she has said that the Christian Union would be more than happy to collaborate with us again, which is an offer I fully intend to take her up on at some point either this term or next. Our next scheduled meeting is Thursday 7 December (Room TBC), but to keep up to date with all of our upcoming events including sober socials, charity fundraisers, meetings, and just generally any ways to get involved or help out, follow us on social media: Facebook: BNU_LGBT (This is a private group, so no one can see who is a member /what you post unless they are already a member themselves). Why I decided to join and continue with BNU Pole When I tell People I am part of BNU Pole immediately they think some very negative things and think I just dance around a Pole for an hour class. Fortunately that is not the case. BNU Pole is about fitness and building up confidence as it is a performance art as well as a form of exercise taken up by a wide range of age groups, male or female. I first decided to join BNU Pole as my old teacher was taking classes and was becoming an instructor and it helped her so much with her strength, power and control of movements as well as flexibility. My teacher says they gained more confidence in themselves from doing Pole. So during Freshers' Fair I happened to find myself near the Pole sign-ups and decided it would be a fun thing to do, as well as something to get fit and have more confidence. My first year I was quite scared and it took a while to pick up some moves but the people in the class really helped as they were all in the same boat and really encouraging. This helped me build up my confidence up to the point to even perform at the Takeover last year, and I felt confident enough to perform in front of everyone and afterwards it felt absolutely amazing and worth it. This has lead me to join the BNU Pole Committee as this year’s Fundraiser and I am excited and have a few things planned (such as our Pole Takeover which is in late February 2018) where our main theme is empowerment throughout the decades. I am still a beginner and am continuing to improve and do moves I could not do last year and our instructor is very helpful and gives us lots of tips on how to improve. We also do fitness classes that are put on when we do not have the instructor, and they help with your strength and also fitness. Even though there is a fee to Join Pole it is fun and everyone’s really friendly and even if you do not want to do Pole you can still be a social member. If you have enquiries about joining pole either email us at bnupole@gmail.com or join us on our Instagram which is bnupole or even snapchat bnupole17.
BNU DANCE The busy month of October was filled with the beginning of competition rehearsals, performance opportunities, and the first BNU Dance sober social of the year! Our first community performance was at Cumnor Hill House, an elderly care home in Oxford. We had a fabulous time dancing for the staff, visitors, and residents, and loved interacting with everyone.
Thank you to our lovely BNU Dance members for taking part, and we hope everyone at Cumnor Hill House enjoyed it as much as we did. Our performance highlight for November was the High Wycombe Christmas Lights switch on in the high-street. We performed here last year, and we absolutely loved it. There was lots of interest and enthusiasm for

this performance from all our BNU Dance members, and it was the best way to get ourselves into the Christmas spirit! BNU Dance are all about inclusivity, and creating memories, and we thought what better way to do this by holding a Sober Social every month. We held our first Sober Social at the High Wycombe fireworks display, and this was a fab way to enjoy each other’s company, whilst getting into the Bonfire Night spirit watching the fireworks. Sober Socials are a great way to spend time with each other in a relaxed environment, but remember we are always hosting our socials every Wednesday night, so keep your eyes peeled for updates on our Facebook page. #BucksGirlsCan ran again this year, from Monday 20 November until Sunday 26 November, and BNU Dance got involved in promoting and supporting this campaign. Our VPEW Lauren O’Shea held an Irish dance masterclass for beginners on Tuesday 21 November. Lauren choreographed last years Irish team, so everyone was sure to pick up loads of knowledge from this class. It was lots of fun! BNU Dance will be kicking off the first Wednesday of December with our very own takeover. The theme this year is ‘So Bucks thinks they can Dance?’, where members of Bucks FC, Mens Rugby, Netball, and Mens Hockey will be paired up with four of our very own dancers. Be sure to come along on Wednesday 6 December to see who wins the battle for this year's BNU Dance takeover cup. In addition, games and mini-competitions will be hosted, where all clubs and societies can get involved. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Women's Hockey.

JOIN WOMEN'S HOCKEY! I hadn’t touched a hockey stick since I was about 14 in an underdeveloped extracurricular club at school. What possessed me to show up at the introductory session during the Fresher’s Week of my second year, I don’t know. More to the point, I’m usually too much of a coward to try anything new. I’m that person. To say I was terrified is a bit of an understatement. But, and I can’t believe I’m writing this, I really didn’t need to be. No one was judgmental. No one was elitist. I was welcomed into the session with open arms.
Other than that satisfying noise of the stick hitting the ball, what is there to look forward to?
and are a great way to help boost the team’s spirits and contribute to us gelling as a team.
Competitive play is something I had never thought about taking part in, but it’s fast become one of my favourite elements. Being able to work together to achieve a win is one of the best feelings. And if we lose? It’s fine. Yes, it’s disappointing for a bit, but you’ve tried your best and that’s all that matters. There’s next time, and the social in the evening to help you get over this.
As with other sports, the increased fitness levels that come as a result of training are beneficial for so many reasons. There’s the health benefits, of course, but there’s also an improvement to how you play in matches. Plus, climbing the stairs to the top floor to your room when the lift is out of action becomes a lot less of a chore.
Socials. How can they be described? Other than the hockey itself, this a major aspect that shouldn’t be overlooked. Usually held on a Wednesday, themed events are something to look forward to after games
If, somehow, I’ve not managed to fully convince you to come and join us, visit us in the Students' Union on Mondays from about 6.15pm to find out anything else you might need to know!
Having tried a number of activities, both in and out of the university, this came as a surprise. Usually, and this doesn’t go for everything, there is a serious length of time where you have to prove yourself before being considered part of the group. To be treated fairly and be included from the offset was nothing short of amazing. As you’ve probably guessed by now, experience really isn’t the be all and end all. Sure, it’s great if you have an idea of what’s going on but it’s not truly necessary. It’s also fine to turn up like I did and learn as you go along. Again, never having played before isn’t detrimental to your potential. You learn the rules by participating in the activities and games. Simultaneously, you work to improve your skills and knowledge of what-on-earth is happening. And, believe me, it really isn’t as scary as it seems. We’re not even at the end of the first semester, but anyone could see a marked improvement in all of our players. We’re a team, and that’s one of the reasons why we’re getting better-everyone is supported and, likewise, supportive. You don’t fall behind and, at the heart of all of this, we have an awesome coach.

It’s been a strange start for Bucks Men’s Rugby this year.
and a conversion rounding a complete performance. Brighton led at the break 14-10 before both sides scored another penalty each to make it 17-13 with 20 minutes to go. In the second half Bucks received two yellow card due to the endless penalty count but that didn’t slow us down as we stuck to our game plan with excellent handling skills linking up the backs and forwards play. Injuries Top try scorer: Charlie Cotton and mounted up which resulted in another Lewis Ellison (both with 2) loss away to Portsmouth. We started out with our recruitment process that led to having our first trial game against the local side High Wycombe. This was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the talent coming through from all our new players to show what they can do. The game was a 24-10 win for Bucks with fantastic performances from Lewis Ellison and Alex ‘Silky’ Cotton, both freshers this year.
Our next game came at Home to Brighton which was always going to be a massive fixture in this year’s league table. The return of crucial players Charlie Cotton, Ollie Bonner-Davies and Danny Pearson made our starting XV one of the strongest we have had all season. After a slow start and conceding too many penalties that resulting in us losing precious field position and possession, Brighton found themselves ahead early on. Brighton had a dominant line out that led to them having a solid platform for their backs to play off resulting in two tries. Bucks managed to score one try in the first half with an incredible solo effort from none other than President and First Team Captain Charlie Cotton where he beat three men before rounding the fullback to score under the posts. Taking over the kicking duties on the day was debutante Fly Half and fresher Sam Bowers. Sam was unbelievable and ran the entire game from the 10 shirt. He also slotted over two penalties
One to watch: Alex ‘Silky’ Cotton
Takeover: The Rugby Takeover was a huge success this year raising a massive £655. The theme was game shows and we played Family Fortunes, Deal or no deal, The Price is Right and a very controversial game of Catchphrase which we hope no one took too much offence to! All in all it was a cracking occasion and shout-out to Bucks FC for dressing up as rugby’s very own Joshua Kidby!
Volunteering: Volunteering as a club this year has been fantastic. We have run a stall for breast Cancer, completed the Fun Run for testicular cancer as well as entering TWO teams to compete in Netball 4 RAG. A lot of the boys also got involved in selling poppies as it means a lot to many members of the club and their families. Shout-out to Charlie Cotton who has already passed 80 hours of volunteering this year already!

BUCS NATIONALS 2017 Bucks Swim team does not get the opportunity to compete in as many competitions as we would like, but when we do compete we like to put everything we have into it. BUCS Nationals is one of those times. We may only be a small team, just four of us made the trek up to Ponds Forge International sport centre in Sheffield, but that didn’t stop us.
For those of you that don’t know BUCS Nationals is essentially a massive swimming gala, where universities from up and down the country come to compete against one another. The competition even seeing the likes of Team GB swimmers. So, a pretty big deal then. For us committee members, it was also our final opportunity to compete at the event. The pressure was definitely on.
A Typical Day at BUCS 7am – wake up 7.30am – drive to pool 8.15am – Warm up starts 9am – First session begins Noon – FOOD 12.45pm – Warm up 2pm – Second session begins 6pm – FINALS
In total the four of us were entered in 11 events, out of those, four PBs were achieved on the first day alone, with even more epic racing on the second day. Hen Lowen-Cooper smashing her 50m free in 31.98 seconds, and Stuart Eastwood smashing his 50m fly in 27.50 seconds. They both proved that
hard work and training pay off, and were the subject of many proud parent moments from us both. It's a long weekend, but great one, and overall it’s definitely worth it. All in all we were super proud of everyone who competed, and we thrilled with the results. We’re now training and getting ready of BUCS National Long course gala in February, where we are hoping to do just as well as we did at short course.
If you're interested in joining the Swim Team, then please get in touch. We always welcome new members and not only is it a great way to exercise but you will meet loads of great people. Find us on Twitter @BNU_SwimTeam, or get in touch Sean Wright or Sam Broad, either on Facebook or via email, all our details can be found under Swimming at bucksstudentsunion.org/sports.
