Welcome from the Editor.

by Zoë Moorton Editor of The Bucks Student

WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the Fresher’s Edition of the Bucks Student and if you are new to Bucks: Welcome to our friendly University! This year, I will be taking over the Editor position for the Bucks Student. It is really exciting to be able to contribute towards it. I hope that you find throughout the year that you enjoy it too! More importantly, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to submit your own articles. If you think you have something worth writing about then send it to us! It’s a really great opportunity to get involved with the student newspaper, as you are given the chance to voice your opinion. There is massive turmoil in the world of politics at the moment, what's your perspective? Are you having any concerns or issues about the University itself? Do you know all the rare Pokémon hotspots? Write about it! It's the perfect space to voice your opinions and concerns and will reach everyone at Bucks. It's a really powerful resource being able to use your university’s media, so get involved! The Bucks Student is very open-minded about its content and you don't have to be a perfectionist;

just write about anything you're passionate about, because if it interests you, then it will interest us too.

COME TO OUR FIRST MEETING AT THE LOUNGE ON TUESDAY 27 SEPTEMBER AT 6PM, WHERE THERE WILL BE FREE PIZZA AND DRINKS! If you begin to regularly write for the newspaper, you will find that your writing skills really develop and your language will broaden. More and more people rely on using spell-check and other software to correct their mistakes, but employers really will appreciate your ability

to write emails and notes for them without embarrassing errors. On top of that, getting regularly involved with your university’s newspaper is a great way to enhance your CV, as it shows you have a strong command of the English language, and that you are invested in, and committed to, your university’s current affairs. Aside from that, seeing an article you have written published is a great feeling. If you're interested in getting involved; make sure to come to our first meeting in The Lounge on Tuesday 27 September at 6pm, where there will be free pizza and drinks! It seems I'm always on Campus, in the Gateway building, so feel free to come and say hello! I am super friendly and love feedback, so if you have any suggestions for the Bucks Student then please let me know! Good luck for the academic year ahead. We hope this issue kick starts the semester for you.

Welcome.

by Joe Collins, Jenny Wade and Ohio Orumen

WELCOME FROM THE SABBS

Hi guys! Welcome to Bucks and what I can assure you is going to be the best few years of your life. All three of us were students here, and we’ve been elected, then re-elected to be your Sabbatical Officers of the Students’ Union.

Joe Collins

Jenny Wade

Ohio Orumen

President

Vice President Education and Welfare

Vice President Student Involvement

As President my role is to ensure that the student body is represented and all members have support offered to them, ensuring the best possible student experience. Be that guidance on how to join a sports team, set up your own society, advice on budgeting or just a general query. As a Bucks student you are automatically a member of the Students’ Union.

Hi everyone, I’m Jenny Wade your re-elected Vice President Education and Welfare for this year! I studied Performing Arts (Film, TV & Stage) here at Bucks and graduated last September before becoming VPEW at our amazing Students’ Union. As your VPEW, I’m responsible for the academic experience of every student at Bucks. My remit covers the student rep system, assessment and feedback, course validations and so much more. I also sit in meetings with the Senior Management Team of the University, to make sure the student voice is heard in every level of decision making.

As your Vice President Student Involvement, I am responsible for the development and delivery of the extra-curricular experience for all students at Bucks. My remit covers sports, societies, volunteering, fundraising for RAG and recreational activities!

I am also the main spokesperson and representative for the student body in discussions with the University and wider community. Be sure to follow me (as well as Ohio & Jenny) to stay up-to-date with all that we are doing to improve your student experience. We frequently post information about competitions, volunteering opportunities, upcoming events and much more! Bucks Students’ Union also has its own social media platform so it's definitely worth following them as well. Facebook (Bucks SU Pres) Twitter (@ JoeCollinsPres). Also, don’t forget about our YouTube channel (Bucks Student TV), we have hundreds of videos showcasing everything we do to help give you an insight into Bucks. Be sure to check out our website as frequently as you would check Facebook or Twitter if you want to keep up-to-date with all upcoming events. Remember that our website - bucksstudentsunion.org - is separate from the University’s.

Another huge part of my role covers the welfare of Bucks students; I work closely with our fantastic Advice Centre to run campaigns throughout the year, ensuring student well-being is at the heart of everything we do. You can talk to me on Facebook (Bucks VPEW) or on Twitter (@JennyWadeVPEW) and if you spot me around campus make sure to stop me for a chat!

There is so much to get involved with and you should really take advantage of all the free opportunities we offer! In my time at Bucks I have played Rugby, American Football and joined the Swim Team. I’ve also volunteered in the community through conservation projects, fundraised for charity through RAG tournaments and bucket collections in town. Society-wise I joined the Afro-Caribbean and Powerlifting Societies, as well as being the fitness coach for Pole Society. I can’t stress enough how much getting involved in Bucks can change your life. You’ll meet so many new people, gain new skills, pick up free qualifications and have the time of your life. You can find me on Facebook (Bucks VPSI) or on Twitter (@OhioVPSI).

As a Bucks student you are automatically a member of the Students’ Union.

FAQs.

Pre-Freshers' Issue

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Coming to university can be a daunting experience, and there might be a lot you are unsure or unaware of! We've compiled this list of FAQs to help get you started.... When does Freshers’ Fortnight officially start?

What exactly is the Freshers’ Fair?

Freshers’ Fortnight officially starts on Sunday 18 September with the Freshers’ Welcome Party. The Venue will also be open from midday on Saturday 17 September so you can collect your Freshers' wristband, purchase your Freshbook t-shirt and generally relax after lugging all those suitcases and boxes to the top floor of halls!

Our Freshers’ Fairs take place in the first week of Freshers’ Fortnight and are a great chance to find out how you can get involved and make new friends. They’re a great way of meeting our clubs and societies in person, asking them any questions and getting you signed up. Visit the Freshers' Fairs Wednesday 21 September at Uxbridge and Thursday 22 September at High Wycombe.

Enrolment starts on Monday 22 September, but we’ve got loads of other great Freshers’ events happening. How do I get into the Venue? We will have wristbands available for all new students. Your wristband needs to stay on until you get your student ID card. To get a wristband, simply visit the Wristband Exchange which is located in the Venue: Saturday 17 September: noon-late Sunday 18 September: noon-late Monday 19 to Friday 23 September: 10am-4.30pm Please note that: • Just like at a festival, wristbands have to be

collected in person. • Wristbands are for new starters only (sorry, but

everyone else has already had a Freshers'). • You will need your first-year acceptance letter and

a form of photo ID (driving licence or passport) to collect your wristband.

THE BIG DEAL... COMPLETELY REMOVES COST BARRIERS, MEANING YOU CAN TRY LOADS OF NEW THINGS WITHOUT SPENDING A PENNY!

• Wristbands are non-transferable

IMPORTANT: You will need to bring your acceptance letter from the University and a form of ID (passport or drivers licence) to collect your wristband. I study at a partner college or am a part-time student. Can I still come along? Yes - you can. Everything we do is inclusive for all students who are enrolled on a Bucks course. This includes part-time, mature, international and partner college students. Over 18s only unless specified otherwise.

Who can I ask if I have questions? During Freshers’, there will be plenty of people around to help. Look out for our friendly Freshers’ Helpers who will be wearing orange t-shirts (you really can't miss them). What about my student card? You will get your student ID card as part of enrolment. How do I contact the Union? All our contact details are listed on our website: bucksstudentsunion.org/contact. The main Union email address is union@bucks.ac.uk. You can call us on 01494 601 600 or you can drop us a message on Facebook (Bucks Students' Union) or Twitter (@buckssu). How can I get back to my halls safely? We run the SSHH (Silent Student Happy Homes) bus during our busier events. The buses pick you up from halls and then take you home. I've heard about The Big Deal, but what is it? Am I entitled to it? The Big Deal is promoted and run by us for all Bucks students. It encourages you to get involved in lots of different activities, events and sessions all for free. It completely removes cost barriers, meaning you can try loads of new things without spending a penny!

New and improved.

by Tristan Tipping Chief Executive Officer

WHAT'S NEW AT BUCKS SU? Although we are delighted to be ranked once again as one of the best Students’ Unions in the country, in this year’s National Student Survey, we are always working on ways to make life better for students at Bucks and this year is no exception… Not only will we be sharing a brand new strategic plan with our membership this September - a plan that identifies the organisation’s vision and direction for the next three years - we’ve also made lots of little improvements that hopefully will improve your experience right from the offset. Here are some of things we’ve been up to: Rep recognition

The Venue

Sport for Fun

This is a new system looking to identify and reward the work that reps are doing both inside and outside of the initial programme committee meeting structure. A number of reps are representing their students in wider forums, and throughout the community, and we felt that they should be recognised for the work that they are putting in, it includes everything from getting involved with research and campaigns through to joining the university and local community.

With a new layout and refurbishment of The Lounge Bar and main Venue, including a host of new lighting, digital screens, projectors and some comfy new seating booths the bars are all set to welcome you back!

We have introduced a number of new sports into the Sport for Fun programme this year including: Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), Sabre:Lite Fencing and Touch Rugby. From the feedback we received, which included a high percentage of female student responses, we have also included Horse Riding and women's only Zumba, which we believe will increase the number of sports offering based within a 10 minute walk of the Campus to female Uxbridge students.

Student Rep Conference Wednesday 25 January 2017 will see the first Bucks Student Rep Conference. The conference will feature presenters from the Students’ Union, University, external providers and student reps. This will be a great opportunity for reps to get together and participate or deliver some interesting and engaging sessions. Part-time Officers This year we are introducing eight volunteer part-time officer positions to join the team at Bucks Students' Union representing: LGBT+, Women’s, Black, Minority and Ethnic (BME), Disabled, Mature, International, Postgrad, and Part-Time Students. These positions are a unique opportunity to be part of the team driving the direction of the Union. Ensuring that these underrepresented student groups are firmly at the centre of Bucks Students’ Unions planning, development and implementation of our work. Working alongside the other part time officers and our full time sabbatical officers you will have the opportunity to network internally and externally, contribute to committee meetings and represent Bucks at national conferences. To find out more information and to apply please head to bucksstudentsunion.org/representation.

We have also improved our offering by bringing in a range of new products that will appeal to you, our members. This year we are introducing Magners and Becks Vier on draught, as well as diversifying our soft drink offering by introducing various flavours of Rubicon in handy sit-in or take-away sizes to keep you hydrated and focused in your lectures! We are also looking to replace our bar snack offering with a wider variety of crisps and sweet snacks, as well as continuing to offer a range of pork scratchings from the Snaffling Pig – as seen recently on Dragon’s Den! Weekdays between 3pm and 9pm will see the introduction of our brand new Members Only Cocktail Club! Eight new cocktails and mocktails carefully constructed by our Venue team to offer a varied, high quality and tasty alternative for those looking for some light relief after a long day of lectures! Events Continuing on from the popularity of last year’s new events Boombucks and Glitterbomb we have spent more time and resource making these events bigger and better and keep an eye out for small changes throughout the programme to ensure events are as good as they can be and a new staff team to help implement new ideas.

Competitive Sport After listening to student feedback we have worked hard over the summer to secure new training facilities for our Football and American Football teams. They will now be training at the brand new 3G facility at our partner colleges Amersham and Wycombe Flackwell Heath campus. There will also be new coaches for a variety of our teams including Hockey, Football, American Football and Cheer. Uxbridge Over the course of the summer, we¹ve been making some redevelopments to our space across the first floor at our Uxbridge Campus. These include a new and improved social calendar wall that better informs students about what opportunities we¹ve got coming up, how you can get involved and highlights any specialist projects that are taking place. We¹ve also developed a ‘Wall of Fame’ space to celebrate student and staff success at the Uxbridge Campus or other notable achievements by our members or the Union itself. We can¹t wait for you to see it!

Student development and employability

Volunteering and societies

Student Housing Campaign

In response to research and in line with our new strategic plan, the training and development team:

We’ll be introducing a new Platinum volunteering award as many of our members were achieving Gold by congtributing over 100 hours. This will also come with a time credits system where we offer incentives such as a ticket to Thorpe Park or afternoon tea for two when 250 hours are reached.

A brand new campaign aiming to tackle the issues of stressful house hunting and unhelpful landlords! Talking to estate agents and landlords can feel like hitting your head against a brick wall. Some assume that all students are naive pushovers, others avoid your complaints hoping that you'll eventually give up and go away. We listened to you, and discovered that a huge number of students were suffering at the hands of misinformed housing decisions and unreliable landlords. This campaign, whilst providing quick tips and checklists for becoming a tenant, will communicate what support is available should you come in to trouble with your accommodation. This isn’t just an issue for High Wycombe, but for the national student population – it’s time we start to change things. Keep an eye out for dates and how you can get involved – we’d love to hear about your experiences!

• have responded to a request from members by providing a two day ‘Business Pathway’ workshop to improve on members business skills • are already collaborating with course leaders and lecturers to ensure elements of the activity programme are module specific • have created a ‘How to….’ Member Activity Guide that lists the variety of activities planned for the year and links them to courses or interest groups • are being more approachable to members by having a more prominent presence at Freshers' Fair, inviting students in to discuss their ideas for activities and getting out and about around campus to talk about the Big Deal programme • are collaborating with the Careers Department at the University to increase the provision of employability skills sessions • have responded to member feedback by improving our activity offer to students based at Uxbridge and offering sessions at times more suitable to them • are relaunching the Skills Reward Scheme to continue the opportunity of enhancing your CV and getting free stuff! • are working with the Officers to provide activities that support their campaigns Transport We’ve got a brand new 17 seater minibus to replace the one of our older vans, meaning you’ll be heading to fixtures and trips in greater comfort and reliability!

We will also be identifying tailored opportunities to degree subjects and linking them specifically to future career prospects, alongside this we’ll be spending time building closer relationships with academic departments to market these opportunities. Also look out for new incentives for societies, awards for the most fundraised for RAG and a Society of the month award and tailored training sessions for student leaders to help them within their roles and gain soft/ transferable skills after graduation. Black History Month This October will see Bucks Students' Union take Black History Month celebrations to a whole new level – for the first time we are introducing an exclusive programme of events exploring black history, heritage, culture and achievements. Led by our BME Officer, you can expect an award winning performance from Bucks Graduate Modupe Salu, film screenings, carnival dance workshops, theatre trips, Globe Trotters event with free Carribbean food from ‘Cool Runnings’, guest speakers followed by discussion workshops and much more!

Catering In the cafes we have the new Bucks Cafe Club card, offering big savings throughout the year, see the adverts for offer details. We also have an updated menu in the Lounge which we are looking forward to you trying. Alongside that the popular meal deal is having a re-vamp with all new snacks offered and more drinks included giving a larger selection for members to choose from, and all the cafes will have new signage to make it easier and clearer for customers. And that’s just the start, come and have a chat and let’s see what else we can do together!

10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE UNI 1. SORT OUT YOUR FINANCES NOW

6. PLAN FOR EMERGENCIES

It's vital that you start the process of applying for your student funding through your relevant provider as soon as possible. If you haven’t yet applied for your student loan, or your NHS bursary etc. do it now. You should also ensure that when you start your course that you have some money available to you as your Student Finance or Bursary can take a few days to reach your bank account or in case of problems with your Student Finance or Bursary.

2. PLAN AHEAD Do some research on what you might need so that you don’t have to buy it when you get here.

3. COOK YOUR MEALS WITH YOUR FLATMATES. An excellent way to bond with your new house mates is to share a meal. This is not only a great way of getting to know everyone, but it can also save money on the cost of cooking and the price of food.

7. CHECK OUT THE OPTIONS FOR PART TIME WORK. Your student finances will only go so far, and to ensure that you as comfortable experience as possible whilst you are university, you may need to get yourself a part time job. The Students’ Union has job opportunities on bucksstudentsunion.org, as well as the careers and employability department at the University, or in local newspapers.

8. FIND A HOBBY Have a look at the type of things that might interest you and that you can get involved with before starting. The Students’ Union runs a large amounts of sports (competitive and recreational), clubs, societies, as well as dedicated training and skills events.

9. TAKE YOUR TIME WITH HOUSING

4. LOOK AFTER YOUR STUFF. Probably one of the least exciting things to think about is the insurance that you have to cover your possessions. Your stuff is not necessarily covered by a parent’s home insurance, some insurers will add students but this is not an

Don’t rush to sort out your accommodation for next year. Relax, you will have plenty of time to start to look for the accommodation and you really shouldn’t be doing this too soon, before you get to know any of the house mates that you want to move in with.

10. DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP

automatic thing.

5. GET TO KNOW THE AREA THAT YOU'RE MOVING TO. Is it close enough to the University that you can safely walk home? Will you need to look at public transport to get to the University? It may be worth coming to visit the town before you start so that you can get a feel for the place before you arrive with all of your stuff.

Alcohol impact.

by Amy Hurst, Third Year Social Work Student and Noel Cornford, Business Development Manager

ALCOHOL IMPACT This year, Bucks Students’ Union and Bucks New Uni have teamed up with a number of community groups, lecturers and staff in a bid to help people understand behaviours and pressures facing students today in relation to drinking alcohol and the associated environments. The National Union of Students are running a scheme called Alcohol Impact, a nationwide project which has a number of high profile universities enrolled. The aim is not to stop people from drinking but to help students either cut down or drink responsibly. This could be by introducing more initiatives for people not to drink, highlighting events and activities that have no emphasis on drinking culture, or to simply offer a clear alternative to the sometimes intimidating environment of a night club or bar. Over the next two to three years we will be improving facilities and introducing projects and events that encourage broader participation. Some of the things implemented so far: • New water cooler in the venue for easy access on nights out • Free tea and toast at big club events, courtesy of the Christian Union • Early evening food offerings • More soft drinks and Mocktails • Info sheets highlighting the dangers of excessive consumption of alcohol • Sober socials, teams and societies adopting responsible attitudes Keep an eye out for how you can get involved with the process as an ambassador or even as one of our assessors for the submission in December. Amy Hurst is a third-year Bucks student and Alcohol Impact Ambassador, she helps us represent the

student voice in some of these matters and helped us recently on some venue activity to help raise the profile of the campaign. “During my second year of studying BSc Social Work, I completed a 70-day placement at Smart in High Wycombe. Smart provides initial support for individuals who experience any level of substance dependency. My role within the organisation began with learning the organisational policies and procedures as well as completing required training. I then advanced to supporting individuals on a one to one basis as well as facilitating group sessions. Towards the end of my placement, Noel from Bucks Students' Union got in contact with a co-worker from Smart and asked if he would facilitate an awareness of the service that Smart provides at an Students' Union event night. I offered to attend this event with my co-worker and we got planning! Motivating individuals who want to achieve abstinence from a substance is a key role of the support that Smart offers. However, Smart also provides advice and guidance for safe practice for those who aren’t ready to begin recovery. When attending the Students' Union we were armed with information leaflets of various substances, a supply of free condoms and a Breathalyser. The most popular attraction was the box of condoms that we had on our table which supported Smart’s safe practice guidance.

Understandably, students were a bit apprehensive when asked if they wanted to be breathalysed. However, once reassured that it was just to raise awareness of how easy it is to consume a large measure of alcohol units without realising, individuals were keen to give it a go... During the time that we spent at the Students' Union, between 11pm and 1am, we breathalysed 15 people. Having a reading of just 0.08% of a blood alcohol content takes you over the UK legal driving limit. Our readings ranged from 0.01% to 0.22% with the majority of readings being 0.13% and upwards. These readings did not come as a shock to the majority of participants, but did open their eyes as to how much alcohol they had already and were going to consume in the upcoming hours. Overall, our presence at the Students' Union did serve a purpose and was a good start for more appearances in the future”.

Want to get involved with Alcohol Impact? We are looking for Ambassadors to work with us on various events and campaigns and two Students to be our assessors on Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 December 2016 on behalf of NUS. Get in touch with noel.cornford@bucks.ac.uk or pop into the Students’ Union offices on the ground floor of North block for more info.

THE A-F OF

by Georgina Ledwith Second Year Nursing Student

NURSING CONGRESS

I joined the Royal College of Nursing in my first year of my nursing degree and I really encourage all student nurses to do the same. Every year it hosts an event known as ‘Congress’ which is the largest annual nursing event in the United Kingdom. This year Congress was in Glasgow and I was fortunate enough to attend. As a first-time attendee, it was quite overwhelming and I really wasn’t sure what to expect. Looking back at the experience, I was at the right place at the right time pretty much all the time. Even on the train up to Glasgow, I met nurses on their way to Congress. They were so lovely, and I asked them loads of questions and had a better understanding of what to expect. Throughout Congress, I met so many inspirational nurses and allied healthcare professionals. Everyone was so friendly and it genuinely felt like we were all a family - caring was in everyone’s’ genetics. It was great to meet other student nurses and we were encouraged to get involved with the debates in the main hall. After the encouragement from the Deputy President of the RCN, I felt I could speak on the stage. After him proof-reading my speech I felt equipped and ready for when the debate on nurses pay started. There was a long queue of people wanting to speak but not enough time. I spoke to the lady in front of me who was really encouraging and said I could take her place. Turns out she was the previous President of the RCN. She stepped aside to let a student speak. From this I saw the importance of being equipped, encouraged and then given the opportunity. My experience at Congress was phenomenal and I am hoping to help others be equipped, encouraged and then be given the opportunity to attend.

So in terms of what I take from my Congress experience: A - Awareness: We need to be aware of the current challenges in nursing practice and the best available evidence. We also need to be self-aware in regard to how we can be perceived by others and how we perceive ourselves.

One day I hope to be a nurse as good as the nurses I met at Congress. They were all so generous with their time, advice and encouragement. Until then, I will be the best student nurse I can be.

B - Belief: Nursing is tough. We see people when they are at their worst and we see ourselves at our worst (I had no idea how grumpy I could be). Even with the challenges, believe in yourself, you can do this! C - Campaigning: Some things need to change. There are many challenges ahead, we need to be ready to stand up and say something. Because we care we need to be ready to campaign for what we believe in. D - Dedication: Nursing is a journey. The nurses being recognised for their work didn’t just put a few hours in, they dedicated their whole lives to it. E - Encouragement: Be encouraged. You can make a difference. No matter where you are, you are always in a position to make a difference. Get equipped! You never know when you will get the opportunity. Be ready for it. F - Focus: Overall I have come away with the need to focus. Focus on what is going on around me but pay particular attention to my learning needs. I have a lot to learn but can be easily overwhelmed by the sheer amount. Focus on one step at a time and enjoy the nursing journey.

Each year your Union provides its members with thousands of hours of paid work opportunities. All of our student roles can be flexible around your studies and offer a great chance for experience and skills development. If you are interested in becoming part of our amazing team, keep an eye on our website for roles that come up during the year. We are currently recruiting for various roles in:

Fire Safety You will all be thinking about settling into your new homes for the next year and learning what you can and can’t do.

WOOL 2280

Whilst you are in halls (especially Brook Street) you may experience an early morning rise due to a fire alarm being set off.

SAFETY TIPS

IGNITION TEMPERATURE

PAPER 2180

COTTON 4070

BURNS AT

NYLON 4240

It’s not always on purpose, however, it can be quite easily done. So, to avoid being the one that everyone dislikes for the next couple of weeks for waking them up, these are some of the things you should avoid:

• cooking with dirty/greasy grills and ovens. The bane of every student’s life, having to clean. But it is essential and doing it more often will make it an easier task

• unattended cooking - this often burns so no sneaking away whilst cooking, you can survive without your phone for a bit and won’t ruin your dinner

• smoke alarms can be very sensitive, so if you are using hair spray, aerosols or deoderant in your bedroom, make sure you keep it away from the smoke detector

• smoking in halls (this is against the law), you may find smoking outside is a better way to get to meet other people so don’t miss out on the chance to make a few new friends if you are a smoker

• using candles or joss sticks (this is prohibited in halls). For all of you romantics at heart, you are going to have to stick to rose petals rather than a candle-lit dinner.

CIGARETTE UP TO 7800

As much as a fire extinguisher does make a good door stop; they shouldn’t be removed as this could cause more harm in the long run, as they are heavy pieces of equipment. And as unattractive as smoke sensors can be, you cannot decorate them or cover them because it’ll cause you more hassle in the long run and it is also a criminal offence to do so. You don’t want your first year in university to end badly, it’s the time to enjoy yourself and make the most of being away from home. Fingers crossed this is something that you never have to do, however, it’s best to be on the safe side. In the event of a fire, you should follow this series of steps: 1. Operate the nearest fire alarm 2. Leave the building by the nearest exit 3. Report to the nearest assembly point 4. Do not use the lift 5. Do not take any risks 6. Do not re-enter the building until the portable air horns have been sounded three times to give the all clear. We all hope that this is not something that you ever have to put into action and that you have minimal fire alarm wake up calls this year when at halls. Nobody likes standing outside in the winter for an unnecessary reason if it can be avoided.

BUCKS BLADES by Georgie Lucas Chair of Bucks Blades

by the Nursoc Committee

Nursoc is a newly formed society, created especially for nursing and healthcare students at Bucks. Our aim is to provide a sense of community and belonging, and to organise events and activities where students can meet outside of course work and placements. Nursoc is all about making connections; uniting healthcare students within Bucks, but also making connections with our local community and with other universities. Although a nursing degree can be difficult and time consuming, with half of the year spent out on placements, we believe that nursing students should not be cut off from the benefits of student life, such as experiencing a wide range of activities which broaden our horizons, as well as meeting new people and having fun. Last semester our events included a fantastic launch night in Pulse café with food and wine, a bowling night, and a film showing. In the future we hope to organise guest speakers and study days, as well as more social activities and nights out. This semester we intend to team up with a local company to provide volunteering opportunities working with people with life-limiting injuries. Fundraising is also an integral part of Nursoc. Last semester we held two very successful cake sales and raised money both for Nursoc and for local charities. We are interested in new fundraising projects, so please come to us with your ideas. Nursoc is also a forum where you can get involved in the wider political issues effecting nursing. This year Nursoc made contact with students from other London universities including Kings, London Southbank and Middlesex and joined the Bursary or Bust campaign. Bursary or Bust is a student-led group which is campaigning against the abolition of the NHS student Bursary. On Saturday 4 June this year, we joined students from all around the country in a protest march to the Department of Health calling for a reinstatement of the bursary. In addition we have set up a "Bucks Save Our NHS" group which aims to educate people about the current privatisation of the NHS, and to discuss ways we can work together to protect it. For more information, and to get a sense of what we do, go to Facebook and search Bucks Save our NHS. Nursoc is student-led, and we are looking for new students to get involved. That means you have the opportunity to organise events that you are interested in or think would be fun. We want your ideas! You can be involved as much or as little as you like. Come along to one of our socials, or join the committee, and help organise an event yourself –it’s up to you! There are many benefits – it’s a great way to make new friends, to learn new skills and it looks good on your CV! To get involved come to our stall at the Freshers' Fair in Uxbridge on Wednesday 21 September. Alternatively, look up our Facebook page and send us a message at facebook.com/nursocuxbridge.

Good day freshers, as we all know here at the University, starting the new academic year is hard. All the possibilities of learning new things, meeting new people, having late nights of fun and drinking. Everything about your future starts now, but one question you should start to think about is, do you want to join a society? I would suggest your answer be yes! The Students' Union offers a wide range of choices, although the one I'm going to propose to you is called Bucks Blades... We as a society are not a bunch of people running around, out of our minds with pointy sticks, we practice real medieval martial arts. There's no need to have any previous experience in martial arts, or even exercise, we teach you from the bottom up. What is it that we teach here at Bucks Blades, you may be asking yourself? Well no matter what your interests are, whether it's larping, cosplaying, flapping around in your garden or if you just want to know how to hold a sword we teach it all, but our main focus is a form called HEMA, short for Historical European Martial Arts and specialises mostly as re-enactment in this day and age, although it's occasionally used in stage fighting. Bucks Blades like to focus on those facts, in doing so we'll teach you how to use an arming sword, a long sword, sword and buckler, and maybe even a little bill in a 14th - 15th century fashion. We have two great tutors who've been on a real battlefield amongst an army of metal and

weaponry to guild us throughout the years, they're extremely patient and willing to take a few accidental hits from the newbies. Don’t worry if you think you'll be the only student there, that won't be the case, we have a few second years coming back to help and continue learning. Everyone we've had join Bucks Blades have been kind, courteous and above all friendly, not to say you have to fit in that category we'd be happy to have anyone on board, male, female or other. If sword fighting 24-7 isn't for you, don't worry, Bucks Blades also encourages fundraising for both the society and RAG, and we'll be working on volunteering with people outside the University in the coming year. We'll be organizing a Film night every term, of which you'll be treated to yummy food and a good laugh, and films chosen by society members each time so there can't be any arguments. And once in a while we'll visit reenactment markets called TORM (The Original Re-enactment Market), where you'll be surprised what you can pick up; anything from steampunk pocket watches, to real fox tails. None of these events are compulsory. If you wish to go it will be organised to the best of our abilities', if not that is perfectly fine too. We'll have a table at both the High Wycombe and Uxbridge Freshers' Fair, so please come along and say hello to us, if you have any other questions we'd be happy to answer them to the best of our abilities.

DO YOU WANT TO

by Joshua Marks, Dominic Cleary, Charlotte Dodds and Nick Thong - the Gaming Society Committee

PLAY A GAME? Hello, and welcome to Bucks New Uni. We’re sure that you’re looking forward to starting your life here at university, and one very important extracurricular part of university is societies. One such society is the Gaming Society! Meet the committee:

Joshua Marks – Chair (Supposedly in charge. Not for sitting on)

Dominic Cleary – Secretary (Does what he’s told, or so he claims)

We are excited to welcome new students to the University, and we’re proud of our Society which achieved outstanding accreditation last year, giving us the maximum amount of funding available to any society or sports team. We aim to spend it carefully (as long as Charlotte doesn’t go on a shopping spree!), and keep up the Society’s hard work from previous years, such as hosting charity gaming marathons, improving accessibility for those with disabilities and providing a safe, fun, social environment for those interested in gaming and geek culture. We provide all sorts of games from Cards Against Humanity to Dungeons and Dragons, and have a growing console and PC gaming community, with Overwatch, Super Smash Brothers and Jackbox Party Pack being some popular titles within the Society.

Society news.

Charlotte Dodds – Treasurer (Says she shouldn’t be trusted with money)

Nick Thong – Social Secretary (The least social member of the committee)

We’re also planning on hosting a Pokémon Go hike/tour around High Wycombe at some point in October, alongside events and trips similar to those we’ve organised in previous years. We have an ambitious and determined committee behind us this year, and we aim to make sure the Society is the best it can be. However, what makes Gaming Society such a success is the members, with some even describing it as being ”like a family away from home”. It’s one of the most supportive, open and welcoming microcommunities within the University (and probably the least serious), and one we’re all proud to be a part of. If you’d like to get involved, you can find us at the Freshers' Fair, or if you miss us then, we have a Facebook group that will have all our details, including what days we run and where to find us in the University, which should be viewable if you search for BNU - Gaming Soc. You can also visit our page on bucksstudentsunion.org/societies, or ask in the Students' Union office, where you’ll also be able to find out about the numerous other interesting societies they have to offer.

WHAT MAKES GAMING SOCIETY SUCH A SUCCESS IS THE MEMBERS...

by Ben Parmar Chairman of BNU Film Society

After being the first society to achieve Outstanding under the new Accreditation Scheme, BNUFilmSociety went on to win Society of the Year 2016 at Bucks Students’ Union’s seventh annual Union Awards. Over the past year we’ve headed up and created loads of content for Bucks Student TV; the Students' Union’s very own YouTube Channel, held ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Star Wars’ Secret Cinema screening events, and put on the biggest film competition that Bucks New University has ever seen; The second annual #BNUFilmAwards 2016. This year, we need you to get involved more than ever! As a society, we’ll still be in charge of Bucks Student TV; constantly creating new content. We’ll need help filming and editing both the Union news and sports news; live acts and band interviews; sports and society projects; Varsity and many other events and productions throughout the year. It’s not just Bucks Student TV that we want you to get involved with this year, as a member of BNUFilmSociety, you’ll get the chance to enter competitions and win an array of prizes. Competitions which could involve all manner of activities. So if you like free stuff, which I’m sure you all do, be sure to join us in all our fun and keep a look out for all our events and competitions in the months to come. As well as all of this, we are planning on holding interactive workshops and masterclasses on a regular basis to give all of our

members a platform to teach and learn from each other. Allowing and encouraging cross-course collaboration, we hope that this initiative will create new filmmakers out of those who’ve never held a camera, or used editing software before, as well as improving the ability of film-savvy students who already have the know-how but would benefit from the opportunity to work with, and teach other students all there is to know about filmmaking. So whether you’ve never made a film or make them all the time, joining our society and attending these workshops will allow you to learn and master the ways of lighting, camera, editing and so much more. If any of these skills seem like something that would interest you then be sure not to miss out on the opportunity to join the ever-growing and improving Society of the Year 2016. Remember, being a member of a sport or society at Bucks is completely FREE courtesy of the Big Deal! But that’s not all! During this new academic year, we’ll not only be doing the above, but more. More like: secret cinema events; screenings; guest speakers; the third annual #BNUFilmAwards. Come and find our stall at the Freshers' Fair for a friendly chat and to sign up!

BNU Ballet Society formed in 2015 so is still an up-and-coming society. The Ballet Society provides lessons for people who have gained some experience in ballet but also for those who don’t have any previous dance experience but would like to try something new! The classes will go through basic technique and will finish with choreography for all abilities at the end of the sessions. As of September 2016 we are joining with BNU Dance Society and are going to have our own competition team where we will be competing against other universities. This is an exciting opportunity for us and will give everyone more performance opportunities for both those with experience as well as those who are just joining to try something new. There is something for all abilities! As part of the Ballet Society, everyone will be welcomed to join social events and activities that will be running throughout the year. We find it important to raise money for local charities as well as helping the University with big charities such as the Coppafeel Breast Cancer Charity. Ballet Society takes part in Student Volunteer Week and

this year a group of us went to a local dog shelter and spent the morning walking dogs! We already have a volunteer project set up, this is for International Girls' Day where we are providing a lesson for the women attending as well as a performance. We also have opportunities to take part in workshops and theatre trips to go and see shows and musicals. Being part of a society is great fun and it allows you to mix with new people who might not be on your course or in your halls and it gives you new experiences, it’s like being part of a family! Society and Committee member Emily Nurden says: “I really enjoyed being part of Ballet Society last year and I am now very much looking forward to being secretary in the coming academic year. Last year I particularly enjoyed learning choreography at the end of the classes. This is where we got to have a go at ballet choreography as well as learn other styles like contemporary and jazz. I also really enjoyed going to watch the Russian Ballet perform Swan Lake at the

Swan Theatre. It was a great show and a good chance to socialise with other ballet society members. Next year I am looking forward to being on the committee and helping the society to continue to develop. I am very excited to get involved with the ballet competition team, which is something that has not been done before! So if you're looking to development current skills or try something new, Ballet Society is the place for you! I can't wait to see what the next year holds!” If you have any questions or queries please feel free to contact any of the Society’s committee for further information! CHRISTIAN UNION

WE’VE GOT TOAST DOWN TO A TEA... It’s been a long music filled Friday night in the Students' Union, but now the night is drawing to the close and it’s the early hours of the morning. Your feet hurt a little from the high heels and the dancing which has filled your night. As you and your friends start to leave the Students' Union, your thoughts turn to food, after your night of partying you’re hungry and tired. Maybe a takeaway would be nice but that would of course cost money and on a student loan money is tight. Then just outside the Students' Union door you see a table, from which the smell of toast is coming, other people are milling around with hot pieces of toast, so you go to investigate. The people at the table give you toast and a hot drink, but best of all they won’t accept a penny for it. It’s free. Free, hot tea and hot, buttered toast. Sounds like a good way to end a night out, right? If you want to end your night out, in the way I’ve described, or have a break from the dancing half way through the night and have tea and toast then keep your eyes open for the Christian Union table, because

we will be at the Students' Union, during Freshers' Fortnight and throughout the term providing free tea and toast for anyone who fancies it. If tea and toast isn’t enough to persuade you to come and visit us, then maybe you will be tempted by the thought of chocolate spread or jam. It’s not only tea drinkers who we cater for we also provide hot chocolates for those who fancy a sweeter drink. Why do we do it? We have recognised that people get hungry after a night out and might appreciate a piece of hot buttered toast and a hot drink. Although that’s one reason, we also want to try and share the love of Christ with all the students at Bucks New Uni, one way we feel we can do this is by serving you all in this way. If partying isn't your scene though, please don’t feel

left out, we have plans for you as well, we will also be running a daytime version of tea and toast, where we will be serving cakes and hot drinks, throughout your lunch breaks on the Wednesday and Friday of Freshers Week 1. Is there any better way to get your through the first week of term than with free cakes and hot drinks to go with your lunch? There’s no reason to limit yourself to seeing us just once, come night and day, you will be sure to find us happy to see you, for a drink or cake or toast or both! Please come and join us for some tea and toast, just outside the Students' Union doors on the Wednesday and Friday night of Freshers' and throughout the year! Or in Beats on Wednesday and Friday lunch times for free cakes!

YOGA SOCIETY BNU Yoga Society is perfect for those of you who need a calming way to help you chill out after a day’s work. Relaxation is given while you do simple movements, with softly spoken guidance and warm candles to hold a welcoming atmosphere. An ideal way to relax and unwind after a busy day on campus. Learn how to de-stress yourself through peaceful exercises to make you feel refreshed. Prevent any unwanted muscular pains and loosen your muscles, all while meeting new people.

This year is the second year that Bucks has had a Yoga Society, and we hope to gather as many people as we can - experienced yoga participants as well as new students who want to learn how to do yoga. We have two very experienced yoga teachers, Jemita Rai and Zoë Moorton, who teach very different styles of yoga. They will each take their own class every week to give students a feel for each style of yoga. We hope to take committed members of the society on a yoga retreat to get a more enhanced experience of yoga during the year. Also, we will be taking part in various volunteering events like cupcake decorating at the International Girls Day and selling snacks and drinks at the RAG events throughout the year. Yoga is a fun and unique activity, so why not try something you wouldn’t normally do and come to one of our classes! Visit BNU Yoga Society on Facebook for more details.

BUCKS POLE SOCIETY Yes Bucks has a Pole Society! But it’s so much more than what many assume, most may think that it’s all about sexy dancing, grinding on a pole and only for girls! That couldn’t be further from the truth! At Pole we aim to focus on improving our members strength, coordination, and overall fitness level. As well as this, you get to meet new people, relax a bit and have a laugh! Many of our members have said that Pole has also increased their confidence and social skills. Pole Fitness has been one of fastest rising societies at Bucks. In the past couple of years we have gone from being relatively unknown, to being on everyone's radar. This has been through the hard work and dedication of all of Pole’s committee and all of our members. To me they have made Pole Fitness one of the nicest and most welcoming societies at Bucks. I can say this with first hand experience on the matter. When I started university I didn’t know many people and only spoke to a few others on my course, but I went along to the trial sessions and was made to feel so welcome and comfortable. Since then I have become addicted and am so glad I joined!

our takeover we had various performances that were choreographed by our extremely talented coach (Mobo King) and Captain (Emma Wednesday), these performances ranged from beginner level moves and holds all the way up to advanced routines and dances, all of these were performed by our own Pole members. For our next takeover we plan to make things even bigger and better than our previous. On top of this, the social aspect of our society has grown tenfold! For those who don’t want to perform or take part in our Pole classes, we have lots of members that just come out to our social events and are still part of Pole Society through this. We plan this year to increase the diversity of our events and nights out, not just going out drinking on a Wednesday, but also arranging other nights that don’t require money, or are geared towards people who don’t always want to party. These include movie nights and BBQs.

Starting in September, we have a new committee who are all very driven to making Pole even bigger and better than it has ever been before. Most importantly we are always striving to ensure everyone who joins has a great time and gets the most out of our classes and events.

Pole Fitness is for anyone and everyone to come along and try. We welcome those of all shapes and sizes and you never know, once you’ve tried it you may be hooked like the rest of us! I love everything it has done for me, and the friends I have made through the society.

We have had a lot of successes this past year including our Takeover, where we ran a Burlesque themed event with performances at the Students’ Union Venue. This had the second highest turnout, out of all the societies takeovers, only being beaten by a couple more at the Super Bowl event, which is a massive achievement for us! We were also able to raise over £500 which has paid for our own society equipment. At

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME WE ARE MOST CERTAINLY MORE THAN A FOOTBALL CLUB, WE ARE A WAY OF LIFE... Whether you’ve played football your whole life, or if you’ve never kicked a ball, yet love the game, Bucks FC has a place for you! We are a student run sports team, currently the largest within the University, boasting five different teams competing at different levels within the British University & College Sports (BUCS) league. Getting involved with Bucks FC will not only help you enhance your ability and offer volunteering opportunities for you CV but you will inherit friends for life, and a University experience, no other can offer. With five squads, we are able to cater to all abilities, and remain as inclusive as ever. We currently have over 70 active members, with 40 plus social members, who, every Wednesday, meet and socialise as a group, or a band of brothers some may say. Sadly, everyone must leave university at some point, which means we have lost valuable members who are successfully Graduating! And that is why we need you!

Now let’s talk business... Bucks FC competes across five different levels, with our 1st team participating in the very competitive South Eastern Division 3A and 2nd team in Division 4A. Each team travel far and wide for away games, playing in Brighton, Portsmouth and London to name a few. Our home games are played just a short distance from the High Wycombe Campus with fixtures normally being played on a Wednesday afternoon. 1st team Coach Gerry McGinty, who has currently qualified with a Pro A license and experience from previous coaching jobs, gives us the tools to succeed as a club. Gerry takes training once a week on 3G training facilities a short ride from our High Wycombe Campus. So whatever the weather, training will be on! Our season climax with a great spectacle every year as we compete head to head with the University of Roehampton in our Varsity fixtures. Varsity is the must see event the University year builds up for. Current holders of the Roebuck trophy after five excellent performances from our boys, we are gunning for another successful end to the year and another Varsity win! If you do not want to participate competitively, we also run a five-a-side programme every Thursday evening through Sport for Fun, which is of course free.

But we aren’t solely a football club that plays football and nothing else. We are a family. We are a close-knit community who train, play and socialise together. Socials can range from anything as a game of bowling, to a night in Yates’s or something a little more fun. And although our numbers are wealthy, we are always looking for more. Each member is proud to be a part of the Club, and alumni often refer to the club as an integral part of their university experience. We are most certainly more than a football club, we are a way of life and a brotherhood. I personally have loved every minute of being a part of this University football club, with great history and a fantastic supporting team at the Students' Union. This led me on to take a bigger role and become chairman. Something I can now boast on my CV and which I am very proud of. I want to end by congratulating each and every one of you on gaining a place at this special university. Whether you do chose to join this great sports team, or not. I wish you all success in your future degree. Make sure you come and say hello during fresher’s fair and find out about our taster sessions, and what more we have to offer. Thanks for reading,

BUCKS HOCKEY CLUB During my first year at Bucks New Uni, I made a number of choices that I hoped would help me experience the life of a student in a way that would make things more comfortable for me in both the short term and the long term, while also being thoroughly enjoyable. One of these choices was to join the BNU Men’s Hockey team, and it was a choice that I have not regretted at all, because between the wins and the losses, the training sessions, and the social nights, the team was always there for me if I needed them. Not only have the Hockey teams (both men and women’s) been supportive for students who played the sport before, but they have always been willing to coach, encourage and improve players

who are new to the sport in ways that could make a lasting impact.

sessions as enjoyable as possible to make sure that even though hard work is being put into each session, we are making the most of the time we get and encouraging each other to do better than before by offering friendly encouragement, or light-hearted enjoyment.

Training sessions do not always end on a Monday night; if anybody feels as though there is an area in which they need to improve on, then senior players were, and still are, willing to help explain Of course, the week is not just based how to fully grow as an individual as on training. Finally, the team doesn’t just compete solely for the sake of the team. During the year we compete as a team against the other BNU Sports teams for RAG, in order to raise as much money as possible for charities that rightfully deserve, as well as need, the donations. So why not join the Hockey Team? You could enjoy your time as a member every day of the week and make some friends that will be there for you through your time here.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL

by Matt Draper BNUAF Chairman

American football is one of the fastest-growing university sports in the United Kingdom (The number of people playing the sport in the UK has doubled over the last three years). The British Universities American Football League (BUAFL) boasts more than 60 teams and more than 3,500 players and coaches from 46 countries around the world. But our team – the BNU Buccaneers – is one of the best organisations in the BUAFL! American football is a great sport that combines the power needed to deliver a big hit, the finesse and speed needed to catch a ball, the strategy required to second guess the opposition and stop them in their tracks and most importantly the will and desire that gives you the edge over the competition. An American football team is made up of many positions and requires a range of player builds and skill sets to succeed. The vast majority of our first year players have never played the sport before, and thus everybody starts at the same level. Our team caters for all abilities and we are looking to recruit heavily for the coming season and build on the success of recent seasons. The club will provide all the equipment you need and our experienced coaches – who have played the sport at the highest level in the UK - will teach you everything you need to know to improve your skills.

They are also willing to go the extra mile to help you become an elite athlete, doing things such as setting up fitness regimes during the offseason and setting up a training camp at the beginning of the season. Training camp is a great weekend that will vastly improve your ability as a player and helps the team bond.

and if you choose to join this society then it will not be a decision that you regret. If you have played this sport before you will know how good it is, and if you haven’t then just give it a shot - and like me - you will realise how awesome it actually is!

If you have any questions then you can email me Whether you are a complete beginner or experienced drippy4@msn.com, join our Facebook page veteran you are always welcome to come and enjoy the BNU Buccaneers Freshers Group 2016/17 or follow game. Any shape, any size there is always a position for us on Twitter @BNU_Buccaneers. you. Prove yourself as a Buccaneer and you may even have a chance to represent Great Britain. The BNU Buccaneers are one of the most close-knit societies at Bucks New Uni, and welcome any new people into our family, the people who are part of the Buccaneers are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Our socials are awesome, which include dressing up as superheroes and a range of other themes. Being a Buccaneer means that if you need help with anything non-uni related someone will always be willing to put themselves out and help you with whatever needs doing. I will finish by saying that joining the American football society was one of the greatest choices I made during my fresher’s week (In all honesty, not a lot of great choices were made during that week, but nonetheless)

WHY WEDNESDAY IS THE

BEST DAY OF THE WEEK For many people 'Humpday' can be the toughest day to get through. The midpoint of the average working week and still two more days to go until the weekend officially starts. However, for those who play sport, Wednesday is a weekly highlight.

Wednesday is the day you get to put on the Bucks Kit and represent your University all across the South East alongside other teams. Whether your team is competing or not, sport is happening both on and off campus, so why not get involved. Bucks Students' Union has 22 clubs with over 30 different teams. The majority of teams compete on Wednesday afternoon in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues. This said sport doesn’t just happen on a Wednesday. A number of clubs compete outside of the Wednesday sporting fixtures. Cheer, Dance, Futsal, American Football, Taekwondo, Swimming and Athletics all have competitions that take part on weekends or in one-off mid-week events.

It’s not just sport… Weekly training sessions, fixtures and socials can mean teammates quickly become some of your closest friends. Shared experiences on and off the pitch make the basis of great friendships. What better way to meet new people at university than to try out a sport.
