AN UPDATE FROM YOUR SABBS LAUREN O'SHEA VICE PRESIDENT

GEORGIA NOSAL CHARLIE COTTON VICE PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT EDUCATION & WELFARE STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

Hello Bucks! I’m Lauren, your President. For those of you who are new to Bucks, that means that I was elected into my role by students.

Hello! I’m Georgia, your Vice President Education and Welfare for 2018-19. During my time at Bucks, I studied Event and Festival management. I also worked behind the bar, was a student rep and the RAG ambassador. Bucks Students' Union made my university experience, from nights out to free skills sessions and support from the Advice Centre. I really wish I’d have gotten involved sooner than late in my second year!

Ahead of you is a really exciting journey, whether you’re moving away from home for the first time or returning to education after spending years in the world of work, everyone’s University experience is different! My Bucks journey started in 2014 when I moved to High Wycombe from Coventry to study Performing Arts. I enjoyed my first and second years here but for me, it wasn’t until my third year that I truly found my path. I got really involved in the Students’ Union in a multitude of ways as I’d experienced the benefit of their work and wanted to share it with others. Four years after arriving at Bucks, I’m still loving every second and although my journey is coming to an end this year I’m so excited to see yours begin!

I am so excited for the coming year for many reasons. Being ranked the number 1 students’ union in the UK in the National Student Survey has really started off the year well! There are several campaigns I can’t wait for you to all get involved in. Behind the scenes I will be attending academic meetings, and helping make decisions that make your lives better at Bucks. My door is always open, so please feel free to come in and have a chat!

I hope you have all had a good summer and are looking forward to the upcoming year and Freshers' Fortnight! There will be lots to get yourself involved with during fresher’s week, so make sure you get yourselves down to the Students’ Union, meet like-minded people, and get involved with all the activities on offer. The student paper is a great way for students to see what has been going on and what activities are planned for the upcoming month. As your Sabbatical Officers, we also have a section in the paper every month, so make sure you take the time to read what we have been up to and how we have been representing you over the last month. As one of your elected Sabbaticals Officers, it is my job to make sure the students have a voice within the Students’ Union and University. We are responsible for implementing what students want, in order to make their lives better at Bucks. Please do not hesitate in dropping me a message or coming in to see me if you have an issue, or just fancy a chat!

We're Number 1.

By Lauren O'Shea

YOU ARE NOW A MEMBER OF THE BEST STUDENTS’ UNION IN THE UK Welcome to Bucks Students’ Union! I’m Lauren O’Shea, I was elected by Bucks

students to be your President! I first got involved with the Students’ Union in my second year when I decided to join the Dance Club where I met new friends, got to hone my dance skills, grew in confidence and eventually went on to start my own team and help lead the club in my final year. The skills I took from being a leader in the club enabled me to run in an election and win to be the voice of the entire student body! If there was only one piece of advice I could give to a new student it would be to get involved straight away, don’t put it off because there is so much you’ll miss out on! Did you know that you’re a member of the best University Students’ Union in the UK? In this year’s National Student Survey our students rated their student experience number one out of all University Students’ Union’s! Last year we were pretty chuffed with our Number 6 spot in the NSS and truly believe that the opportunities we provide are of the highest standard so earning the Number 1 position reinforced that. Earlier this year we also won our highest ever ranking in the What Uni league table as 8th best Students’ Union. Clearly our students value the work that we do so be sure to visit us when you get here! The staff at Bucks Students’ Union are highly skilled, creative and passionate so every little detail is planned to ensure that you’re receiving the student experience that you deserve. We run a programme of extra-curricular activities from theatre tips to skills training sessions to suit our diverse student body. We have a huge range of societies and sports clubs that you can join and help run! We listen to your feedback and campaign for improvements within the University. We organise volunteering opportunities, from care home visits to curating music festivals for the community. We have an award winning venue open seven nights a week! We support you in raising thousands of pounds each year for local charities of your choice. None of this would be possible without you! Now you know that you’re a member of the best Students’ Union in the UK so make the most of it! We’ve got an exciting year ahead of us with some big plans and all we need is for you to join in! Come and find me and my team at Freshers Fair and we can help you find something you’re passionate about or simply have a chat! See you in September!

As a team we wanted to gain more of an understanding of the scale of the refugee crisis but also do something that would be useful to those in need. Here are accounts of the day from the team. Alana Zukas: “On our arrival at the warehouse we changed into our kitchen clothes and got stuck into chopping vegetables. It was a large kitchen with lots of people cooking, washing up and preparing lunch, with music playing throughout the day. What amazed us all was the amount of students who had come for a week or two to volunteer. They were staying in hostels or with host families for free and in return would cook the evening meal. As well as this, there was only one person managing the kitchen yet everyone worked efficiently without much guidance, keeping the kitchen clean and

Kat Frei: “I left Calais feeling positive about the amount of young people volunteering their time to help displaced people. The situation for refugees is only getting worse, with more countries closing their borders and governments closing camps. However there seems to be a real desire from young people to take the issue into their own hands and give what they can to help improve the lives of refugees.”

Societies: Christian Union.

CHRISTIAN UNION During the last year we held a few special events, mostly during our Missions Weeks. These included the ‘Call A Cupcake’ service – a hotline for free deliveries of cupcakes to anywhere on the university campus – and ‘Grill A Christian’ event – no fires or electric grills involved, but an opportunity to ask a Christian (often a guest speaker) any question you like. A new event we tried out at the end of last year was our Acoustic Night (#BucksFreedom), held in the Students' Union Bar featuring music, refreshments and talks about faith. We’re looking to run more events like that this year. We’re also known to collaboration with other BNU Societies – last year we held a bowling night with the LGBTQ+ society. We regularly host the Tea & Toast service on party nights at the Students’ Union Venue, providing cups of tea or hot chocolate and toast (with a variety of spreads and toppings available). We’re there at the Venue even until the early hours of the morning and won’t run out of food or drink (although on busy nights we can use up to five whole loaves). We’re closely linked with King’s Church, High Wycombe, and join with them for worship on Sundays and their regular Student Group on a Wednesday evening. They’re situated close to the campus, on Desborough Road, almost directly next to the Brook Street Halls. Our usual weekly meetings are held on a Wednesday night and can be a variety of activities. Sometimes we get out and about in High Wycombe on prayer walks, or we’ll stay inside and study a topic, read the Bible and pray together. We take it in turns to bring snacks to the meeting and can get drinks in the university. These meetings are held in The Sanctuary (N1.10), from 7-9pm each Wednesday. If you want to find out more and join us, come and see us at the Freshers’ Fair or contact us via our Facebook: Bucks New Uni Christian Union.

Societies: A Cappella.

By Tyler-Louise Griffiths

A CAPPELLA What a year it has been! Bucks Acapella Society, in its second year as an established society, has had an incredible year no only managing to achieve Outstanding society status for the second year in a row, but also being awarded Society of the Year, something we are really proud of. We have made several arrangements of songs from different genres throughout the year using only stamps, claps and our vocal cords, so there’s something to suit everyone’s interests! Throughout the year we performed at several events, from small performances at the University to larger performances at Union Awards. In the first term, just three weeks after meeting our new members we had our first performance at the launch of the Bucks Peace of Mind Campaign. Our new members learnt two songs in just a week by attending extra rehearsals in the week running up to the event in order to prepare for the last minute performance. We also performed at Bucks Live Winterland and at Marlow Brewery over the Christmas period a selection of Christmas songs we had learnt throughout the first term. Following the success of our performances at Christmas we performed at a further four events before the end of the academic year; two performances for International Women’s day, at Bucks Live Subwoofers event and our final performance at Union Awards 2018. All of our performances can be viewed on our YouTube channel; Bucks Acapella. As a society, we work really hard to get involved in the Students Union and the project’s they run. Partaking in volunteering events such as the Smile Campaign,

and RAG fundraising events such as Netball for RAG and the Sports Day for RAG, allowed us to do so. We also put on our fundraising event of our own, one of our member’s Toby volunteered to have his legs waxed to raise funds for RAG - and we raised over £100! We hope to keep up our level of involvement with the Students' Union in the coming year. Whilst the society mainly consist of us working on arrangements and performing throughout the year, we also attend trips as a society to socialise and relax as a group. Following the success of the School of Rock theatre trip in the year prior, we once again organised a theatre trip, this time to Matilda. By watching the show, we were able to see how professionals conduct themselves in a performance environment, and improve our own performance skills through this. Overall this year was a successful year, and we are so proud of all of our members, without who we wouldn’t have achieved all that we did, let alone Society of the Year. We can’t wait to see what the next year brings, but we know it will be just as good, if not better, than this year brought us! It would be great to gain more members for the society, with no limit on how many people can sing acapella. We meet every Tuesday from 7-9pm in The Room on the ground floor of South Block, so come along to see us at Freshers' Fair in September! If you would like to know more about the society feel free to contact us through our social media; Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat: @bucksacapella and Facebook: Bucks Acapella Society.

MUSICAL THEATRE

SOCIETY

Last year we introduced a brand-new society to the Students' Union that gave students the opportunity to get involved in acting, singing and dancing activities. As soon as Musical Theatre was set up there was no stopping us - We had big plans to fulfil and we ended up going above and beyond. This year is no different. we are planning to do more shows, more volunteering and more activities.

hold our ‘Fun & Games’ sessions where we hold either an acting, singing or dancing workshop and run fun activities that we encourage you to get involved with.

We understand that sometimes it’s nerve wracking to get up and involved with a bunch of new faces, however we make sure that there is no pressure on you at all to Even though we can barely contain our excitement we don’t want to give too much away, so if you’re interested do what you don’t want to do, we are happy for you to go at your own pace and help us each session or we would like to invite you to come and check out simply watch and enjoy the activities going on. the society on our opening session on the Monday 8 October at 7.30pm in room E1.01 where we will take you However, when we do have a project lined up we like to through all what we have done and all of what we are give it our all… planning to get you guys involved with. MEET THE COMMITTEE Hello EVERYONE! We have decided to make a real change to the Events Society this year! Last year the Events Society was close to inactive, but we want to make sure that we allow students to have the opportunities, such as running and planning events, and learning more about the events industry. This year we need to get you involved a lot more than ever!

The Committee Claudia | Chair

'I am the Events Society's chair and am excited to take the society forward within the university! I'm going into my third year of Event and Festival Management, and get our society noticed amongst the students. We also plan to take our members which has encouraged me to take on this role. I joined the Events Society because I on a trip this year, which should be fun to mix within the society with people that share want to give all students the opportunities to get the experience they want and need the same interest as you, but you may have never met. Like all the others at Bucks to pursue a career in the events industry.' New Uni, our society is free thanks to The Big Deal, so why not get involved and join We plan to collaborate with many more societies and RAG this year at the university

our family? Not only do we want to give all students opportunities, but we also want to support them in anyway we can, meaning we can be your family away from home and help you get stuck into the university experience more. The Events Society is perfect for people who want to get stuck in to university and get the most out of it. It is ideal for people that are interested in hosting or attending events, who are willing to learn from each other and have fun with us, whilst gaining experience. As a society we encourage cross-course collaboration, making it more fun meeting new people.

Phoebe | Secretary 'I've just finished my second year of Music and Live Events. I wanted to join the Events Society and become a committee member as working in events is something I want to pursue after uni, so getting involved in something like the Events Society now will prepare me for the future.'

Lucia

|

Acting Treasurer

'I am the acting treasurer of the Events Society and have just finished my first year of Event and Festival Management. I wanted to join the Events Society to help improve the event scene at the university and to provide a better experience for everyone to enjoy themselves, no matter what their interests. Party on!'

LIKE ALL THE OTHERS AT BUCKS NEW UNI, OUR SOCIETY IS FREE THANKS TO THE BIG DEAL.

Come and find our stall at the Freshers’ Fair for a chat and to sign up! We are so excited to get started in the new academic year and get to know all of our existing and new members! See you soon... Claudia, Phoebe and Lucia xoxo

Pre-Freshers' Issue

The venue is open seven days a week and sometimes it is difficult to decide which nights to go to - you may end up missing out on something amazing! Here are my recommendations for Freshers' Fortnight for those of you who like to experience something a bit different!

Friday Night Dinner, 5pm onwards

Oktoberfest, Tuesday 2 October, 8pm onwards If you didn’t already know, Oktoberfest is a huge beer festival held annually in Bavaria in Germany. Originating in 1810 to celebrate the wedding of King Ludwig I and Princess Therese of SaxeHildburghausen, Oktoberfest is still going and lasts for just over two weeks every October in Munich. This night at your Students’ Union Venue is a firm favourite with all second-years, third-years and even alumni! We will decorate the Venue to transport you to Bavaria, so you can join in the celebrations of the world-famous festival. Our Oktoberfest is part of Globetrotters, where we explore different countries and cultures through food, music and more. Keep an eye out for the Globetrotters logo on event artwork throughout the year! We will arrange the Venue so there are lines of long tables, adorned with the classic blue and white Oktoberfest design, and free bowls of mini-pretzels and German sausages. Two-pint steins will be available for a £5 deposit (you can keep your stein at the end if

you wish) and local brewery Rebellion will be providing beer, cider and ale for you to fill them with (there are non-alcoholic drinks available too). Our lovely bar staff will be dressing the part- so feel free to join in and wear Lederhosen or a Dirndl!

It’s Friday night and you’ve just finished a long week of lectures, talks, and meeting new people, so we are providing a comfortable space for you to relax in. Our Lounge bar is always open, but on Fridays from 5pm we will get the table tennis table and the dartboard out along with the table football, and throw in some great Friday night drinks deals!

To make this night extra-special, Oompah Brass will be providing music and games; which involves stein We are also introducing ‘shot, paper, scissors’, where swinging, sing-a-longs and more! Check them out on YouTube to give you a taste of what the night will entail. you can challenge the bar staff to a game of rock, paper, scissors and could get a free drink if you win! Make sure you arrive promptly (doors open at 8pm but we suggest arriving before to guarantee your seat) This event runs right into our Friday club night, which as due to the room being filled with tables, there are will start in the Main Room at 10pm, and will consist of limited places! guest DJs, themes and giveaways. If you are one of the first twenty people to arrive between 10pm and 11pm, you will get a £5 voucher to spend over the bar!

Oompah Brass will be providing music and games; which involves stein swinging, sing-a-longs and more!

The club night on Friday 28th September will be a massive popcorn party, and on Friday 5th October will be an alphabet party- where you dress up as someone or something that begins with the first letter of your name. Get creative!

Ever thought of trying something new? Something that involves relaxing and breathing and unwinding after a busy day? Well then Yoga might be for you! Throughout the past year we have focused on the practice of Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga from our very talented yoga teachers. This year we are looking into carrying this on as well as having guest yoga instructors to give us more experience of other yoga practises chosen by you! Here’s a few words from our 2018-19 Committee; Patricia Feiteira - Secretary

Abbie Angear-Stanswood - Chair

Emily Dixie - Treasurer

“I decided to try yoga for the first time in the beginning of last year. Since then, I have enjoyed it more and more each time. As a very stressed person in general, I have found that yoga makes me feel calm and relaxed, besides helping with my flexibility, relieving muscle pain and helping with headaches as well. When I finish a yoga class I feel so good both physically and mentally! And that's why I decided to get more involved with yoga society this year, becoming the secretary! I'm looking forward to bringing you many new fun activities this year! Come join Yoga Society, give it a try, you won't regret it!”

“I joined BNU Yoga three years ago and from my first session at university I have found a greater balance in my life. I have attained skills and knowledge that ranges from good breathing exercises to adopting a healthier lifestyle. Yoga is more than just a time to relax, it can be your form of mediation, a time to reflect or a time to let go. I have often felt so comfortable and relaxed from the people around me I once even fell asleep! The atmosphere is great and is a good place to make like-minded friends. Joining the Yoga Society must be one of the best decisions I made when choosing a society.”

“When I first joined the yoga society I mainly started with volunteering for them and when I went to my first session I loved it. I became treasurer to help make the society better and help its members. The society helped me grow so much during my time at university. It also has so many benefits such as helping to de-stress as well as helps with my flexibility which is good for me as a dancer.”

We are all dedicated to creating a mindful, relaxing atmosphere to suit everyone’s needs and abilities. We will be sure to offer sessions that leave you feeling healthy and happy. We hope to see you there!

OF OUR BOXING FAMILY!

Ever wanted to learn a sport that was not part of your social norm? Do you want to learn a sport where you can practice self-defence and improve your fitness at the same time? The University works together with the High Wycombe boxing club that teaches beginners and people who have trained before the sweet science of boxing. We have two professional trainers who train champions and elite level boxers helping us improve on our fitness and boxing techniques as well for a price of ÂŁ2.50 a session (and the first session is for free). Outside of training we will be having our fun too! We will be organising different socials where we get to know each other and maybe make some friends for life as well and these socials can vary from going to the Venue to doing something fun out in the open.

Throughout the year we’re hoping to plan a couple of events to make the boxing society more prominent at Uni. Our first event will be to plan a takeover in the Venue which will consist of a big heavy heavyweight boxing match, hopefully consisting of Anthony Joshua or Dillian Whyte who are the biggest British prospects in heavyweight boxing. If that does not work, we would work together with a different club by organising fun games and a good show. Our second and more interesting event, would be a charity boxing matches where a number of boxers of our society would either fight each other or against another University. By doing that we were hoping to gain some interest from other students and gather some money for charity. We have quite a bit coming up this year and we want students to feel good about themselves by meeting new people and working on their fitness. Ask at the Union office about joining! Sport for Fun.

By Daniel Lawrence

SPORT FOR FUN We’ve had a restructure and are well and truly set to welcome new and existing students to Bucks.

What is Sport for Fun?

Give it a Go Week:

What are the sessions like?

Sport for Fun is our recreational sporting programme where you can try of a variety of sports regardless of your ability. There is no commitment and the majority of our activities are free of charge with a different activity every day of the week, so there is always something for you to try. Sport for fun gives you the opportunity to take part in activities you may not have previously tried, all in an enjoyable, non-competitive environment.

The week after Freshers' Fortnight (starts Monday 8 October), the Student Activities team are running a “Give it a Go” week. There will be a number of different activities taking place to get involved in, outside of our regular programme, so keep an eye out for further information regarding this.

All of our sessions are a fantastic way of improving your mental and physical health and well-being whilst meeting new people and enjoying yourself in a relaxed environment. Don’t just take this from me, students who took part last said that the sessions are “relaxed and enjoyable” and “have introduced me to friends for life”. With all sessions being unique, there is always something different for you to try in an atmosphere which suits you.

What can I get involved in? We have 19 different sports / physical activities in which you can participate, split up into different categories: Social, Wellbeing, Calorie Burner and A Little Different. Some of the activities on offer include Quidditch, Table Tennis, Dodgeball, Snowsports, Handball and Reps and Sets. All of these start from Saturday 29 September. Social Sessions which have a high social aspect with an emphasis on meeting new people. Wellbeing Sessions which are designed with a focus on being healthy and happy. Calorie Burner Sessions which are at a higher intensity and aimed to burn more calories during the activity. A Little Different Activities which are new and interesting that you may not have tried before.

Don’t want to walk to Uni? Take a bike instead! If you cannot wait for the start of the Sport for Fun programme, you can always take advantage of our bike hire scheme at both of our campuses in High Wycombe and Uxbridge. You can hire these bikes, Monday to Friday for a £20 cash deposit which will be returned subject to certain terms. For further information about the scheme, contact daniel.lawrence@bucks.ac.uk at the High Wycombe campus or lucy.ryan@bucks.ac.uk for the bikes at Uxbridge. Alternatively pop into the Students’ Union offices and come see us.

How do I get involved? If you are interested in participating or would like further information on any of the upcoming events, contact sport@bucks.ac.uk. WE PLAN TO HAVE THE MOST WINNING-EST SEASON OF THE CLUB’S HISTORY!

BUCKS LADIES HOCKEY Two points clear of winning the league, Bucks Ladies Hockey had an extremely successful season with our most impressive score line reaching 16-0 against The Royal Veterinary College.

After a tense final match against Brunel University London, with a final score of 5-4, we secured promotion on the 14 March with just one week to go until Varsity 2018 against Roehampton University. Being named the Varsity ‘Fixture to watch’, there were high hopes for us to perform to the standard we had set for ourselves throughout the season. The support from the side-lines was incredible, and encouraged us to keep playing hard, and keep our energy high, despite the warm weather and exhaustion. Final score Bucks 4-1 Roehampton! Athletic Union Dinner was another milestone in the team’s year, with members from the squad being nominated for a wide range of awards. We received nominations for Team of the Year and Club of the Year, as well as the club chair, Victoria Mackenzie being nominated for Sportswomen of the year, and Jo Rawlinson next year’s Secretary, being nominated for Most Improved Player of the year, it’s safe to say it was a very enjoyable evening. With full engagement and commitment from each and every member of the squad, Bucks Ladies Hockey were awarded with outstanding accreditation once again. Members took part in a variety of volunteering opportunities such as Netball4Rag, Volley4Rag, Sports Day 4 Rag and the Smile Campaign. On top of lots of volunteer events, we hold socials every Wednesday night after games, often mixed with Bucks Men’s Hockey. From players with experience and passion for the sport, to those who just want to try something new, we accommodate for all here at Bucks Ladies Hockey.

VOLLEYBALL By Iana Krasinska

The BNU men’s and women’s Volleyball teams are internationally diverse, bringing people from different countries together through a love of sport. We get along great and support each other with everything that we do. The bond we have created is very strong and we do not exclude any of our members regardless of their skill. Having different levels of skill every year is so much fun and we love it, half of the enjoyment is helping and seeing people get better at a sport that we are all so passionate about! Whether you are an outgoing person or an introvert, we will welcome you with open arms and we will make your experience at BNU unforgettable. This includes crazy social nights at the Students' Union's Venue or daytime and evening activities that don’t include alcohol. With motivation, passion and fun, you can be a great member of the BNU Volleyball team. Keep in mind that socials are a great way of creating a stronger bond with the team. Usually they are organised once a week and both teams gather for some team building drinking games before we go to the Venue. But not all socials have to include alcohol. We always discuss it a few days before the event and make sure that everybody is happy with the choice. What makes our men's and women's teams even more fun and interesting is the fact that the majority of us are international students. We have Eastern Europeans, Italian, Portuguese, etc. That makes it even more exciting during socials because we get to learn so many new things and expand our knowledge on other countries.

SOCIALS ARE A GREAT WAY OF CREATING A STRONGER BOND WITH THE TEAM.

Furthermore, we have "volleyball for fun" where you can play volleyball without the presence of a coach. It's more like taster sessions where you can feel the vibe between the teams. If you are worried about making the teams, or if you simply aren't sure about the environment, you are more than welcome on our recreational sessions where you can see for yourself how everything is. Thankfully, the University has an amazing Events Hall where we practice and have our home games. Both men's and women's teams practise on the same days at the Events Hall. The jerseys for the matches are provided by the Students' Union, the only thing you need is comfortable sneakers, shorts, leggings, etc. and knee pads, which we recommend especially for the women's team. You don't have to spend crazy amounts of money on all that. Amazon for example offers cheap knee pads which last a very long time. And last but not least, do not hesitate to talk to us or message us whenever something's wrong. We are here for each other and we support each other no matter what. So feel free to look us up on Facebook and Instagram, and drop us a message if you are interested. Facebook: BNU Volleyball 18/19 Instagram: bucksvolleyballteam

Bucks New University Netball Club is one of the most successful, enjoyable and social teams at the University. With a successful first and second team we are always looking for new members to join for our competitive, social and fun aspects. When settling into the university as a fresher, it can be very life changing and demanding. So why not join one of the most stress free and enjoyable clubs at Bucks? Our netball club has a variety of things to offer: - Weekly socials - Competitive league games - Varsity matches for both teams - Regular skills and fitness sessions - Annual tour holiday: a week of socials and sun and the opportunity to bring social and competitive members together.

“When first establishing the different sports teams available at the university, netball was defiantly one that stood out. It shone through with its competitive side and also the social events it has to offer. With a warm welcome from a few of their current members and a trial session I soon enough made it on one of their teams. The club offers many events to get involved in such as socials, matches, meals out and their annual tour. Throughout my first year I have made so many memories with this club and continue to make more over my next two years I have at the University. With the new year approaching, I have been voted to be secretary within the club. This gives me the opportunity to help organise and plan events and updates that will be occurring throughout the year.

Bucks netball is one of the most welcoming and The netball club offers training sessions and trials for successful clubs the University has to offer”. both teams at the beginning of the year. This is your opportunity to shine through with your talents and gain - Georgia Miller (Dance and Fitness) a spot on one of the teams. We train weekly on a Tuesday, which is accompanied by a enthusiast coach who helps us achieve our goals and also pushes us to success.

“Being an all round competitive sports person, I knew when joining university I would take part in a sports club. Netball was a sport I gained a lot of interest in at college and a sport i wanted to partake in through university. After attending the netball try-outs in September 2017 I knew that this sports club was right for me! The team welcomed myself alongside other fresher’s and took a huge interest in getting to know us on the court and socially. I attended many fun socials, games and training. When I reflect on my first year being part of Bucks netball it was a real highlight and pleasure to be part of. When playing on Wednesdays, sometimes we would travel miles to play and always get the outcome we would aim for! However this never stopped our team’s spirit as we all thoroughly enjoyed playing together and we always gave 100% every game!! Even when the game got tough, we never failed to encourage and applaud each other on the efforts made. Every week we had something planned to do together socially. This meant we spent a lot of time together as a team and it’s allowed me to make some really great friends and to branch out with people I probably would never have met. Now continuing onto second year I was elected social secretary, this for me was great as the social aspect was important to get individuals that maybe aren’t as competitive in the sport involved, as well as those that are. I’m thrilled to now be involved in the planning of these social events and to continue our club being great!” - Jade Mather (Sports Therapy)
