Bucks Students’ Union has a positive impact on your time at Bucks in so many different ways. In each addition of The Bucks Student this column will showcase recent work that we have undertaken to continue having a positive impact on your time. -

by recruiting a new Adviser in the Advice Centre at Uxbridge so that we can see more students and help you with any issue you may be dealing with and need help with

by running Student Rep elections to ensure all students have a voice at University

by approving £1000s of funding to student Societies so you can discover your passion

by securing a Compensation Fund for students effected by the timetabling fiasco by offering a new range of hot food in The Lounge through the week and over the weekend.

Following the childcare survey run last term, the University has secured discounted rates for nursery provision at Wycombe Hospital Day Nursery for our students. The nursery is part of the hospital on Queen Alexandra Road, High Wycombe and is at the top of the hill near the maternity wing. It currently has space for Bucks New University students and can offer a discounted daily rate of £50 for children under 2 years of age and £48 for children over 2 years of age. The nursery is open from 7.15am - 6pm. The nursery has an “open house” each day between 9.30am and 10am where you can drop in and see the nursery in operation. This provision comes after research was carried out by the Students’ Union. Out of the 110 people surveyed, 85% said that if a university childcare scheme was in place they would use it. 94% of the people surveyed at our Uxbridge Campus said they would use the facilities also, with 75% of people surveyed at the High Wycombe Campus also saying the same. In terms of what the people surveyed wanted from a childcare service, 35% wanted ‘flexibility’ from a childcare service and 38% wanted ‘qualified staff

and safety.’ As a result of this research carried out, the university are striving to make the childcare available to all students a positive thing and what people want. Feeling Busty? October is Breast Cancer awareness month and Bucks students are getting there pink on. The sports teams have been donating money to wear pink to their training sessions in support of this campaign, so well done! Oh but it doesn’t stop there, oh no!... 26 October is the day of days, students and Union staff will be wearing pink all day and wearing a cool t shirt that we designed (look out for them, them will be hard to miss). There will be a large stall set up in the Students’ Union Foyer selling boob and pink oriented food goodies, but wait, it gets even better! This same day, in the evening, Flirt! Friday will turn in to a wonderful ‘Boobie Nights’ heaven. The fun begins at 8pm in the Students’ Union Venue, £2 entry (all donations go to the Breast Cancer campaign) on entry you will receive a shot, copious amounts of marshmallows with a chocolate fountain, boob/bra related competitions and some very exciting entertainment!

Caves in Wycombe are something that is just not mentioned or probably not even heard of. As Halloween is approaching, it is obviously on everyone’s mind what costume to wear, what party to go to, what is the next new ‘trick ‘n’ treat’ interpretation this year. However, Wycombe has much to offer to your student experience of living in Wycombe and this month it’s very much in season to visit the next best scary thing - a trip to the Hellfire Caves.

These caves have centuries of history embedded in them, hand carved by labourers for the nobleman Sir Francis Dashwood in the 1750s. This was the secret meeting place he had arranged for his notorious Hell Fire Club. Sir Francis later on became Chancellor of the Exchequer and was also a close friend of Benjamin Franklin who visited West Wycombe often. These caves are surely to add to the thrill and mischievousness to your Halloween this year, venturing through historic tunnels, absorbing the echoes of ancient voices and stepping through underground by candle light alone. Discover your Halloween with a choice of tricking or treating as you take a journey from ‘Steward’s cave’ where you come across old barbarian tools used by 18th Century labourers, winding down to Paul Whitehead’s chamber who is said to have left his heart when he died as a

Franklin Cave is dedicated to Benjamin Franklin, who was a visitor of the Caves and admired it for Sir Francis’ whimsical imagination and puzzling creativity. These are not the only caves you will be treading on before you stumble into the grand Banqueting Hall in which secret luxurious parties were held all with exclusive members. Before you know it you’re about a thousand feet from the entrance of the Caves! If that wasn’t enough, you’ll ﬁnd yourself opened into the River Styx which is named after the legendary river that separated the world to the underworld. It is now a pool of water which still carries a wispy eeriness that can set off a wispy chill down your spine. Finally you’ll ﬁnd yourself spiralling down to the Inner Temple which is situated three hundred feet beneath the church at the entrance of the caves. If this had already got your mind in a maze, why not go see it for yourselves this Halloween. It is opened from 11am-5.30pm till the end of October and Student admission price is £4.00 with a valid NUS card, and £3.00 with student group bookings. What’s even better is that it’s only a ride away. Getting here is easy, a twenty minute ride on the bus and there are car parking spaces available. So get your party gear on and party in the caves this Halloween!

Introducing... Hey All! Welcome to the third edition of this year’s paper and we are getting spooky Student Editor with the Halloween Guy Humphrey edition! Whether you are staying in this Halloween for a scary movie night or going out and about in all your costume finery, Halloween is one of the best, and scariest nights of the year. In this edition there are many different Halloween ideas, whether that be what to buy for a Halloween party, where to go in and around Wycombe to spook yourself, and even a review of the best horror films that are out, whether that be because they are shockingly bad or actually quite scary. For all you foodies out there, Katie’s Kitchen has returned with food and drink recipes to make your Halloween night extra festive. The front page for this edition is the University’s new proposal over childcare, something which people have wanted for many years. Hopefully the article will have been able to clear things up, as well as highlight that the University is doing what people want. This week I also volunteered, and took part in the Open Day for the University. It brought back many memories of myself at the Open Day I went along coming up to four years ago now. Something which is even scarier. The even scarier thing was that many of them weren’t even eighteen yet. Now that’s frightening!

- Scoop out the pumpkin ﬂesh and roughly chop. Peel the onion and carrots and cut them into small slices. You now have a pumpkin shell that can be decorated to add to the festivities! - Place all veggies with the skimmed milk into a saucepan and a pinch of cinnamon. Bring to a simmer and cook on low until the pumpkin ﬂesh is soft (this will take about half an hour). - Stir this mixture to make it smooth and continue on the heat, adding some water to desired consistency. Leave this for about another half an hour. Add salt and pepper. - When ready to serve, stir in the handful of uncooked dried rice - your guests will be repulsed when they come across the witches toenails!

> How did you manage to record an album in such short time? D.C: Andy had three riffs prepared. Those three riffs came out with three down. Every track was recorded within three takes, apart from one, just track 7, with six takes. After those six takes we got it. It was tough.

Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 24 hours (allowing freezing time) Difficulty: Planning These are simple to make but best when made in advance so that the jelly has time to set. You can usually pick up plastic shot glasses from pound shops or supermarkets although small plastic cups will do for a larger portion. Try and get some Halloween decorations that will make the shots even better, or even draw bats, cats, witches hats, spiders and other creepies with a black marker pen on to the cups. Ingredients > Haribo-style gum worms (the longer the better) for decoration plus other creatures if you can find them that can be placed in the drink before it sets. Tinned lychees are also very effective for eyballs stuffed with a blueberry! These little shots are fun but do contain alcohol and should be served with care - friends may tend to have more than they would if they were just drinking. Take caution when drinking alcohol - DO NOT DRIVE and look after each other.

We are gaining an opportunity within a music scene to combine our skills.

To make a frozen hand You need non latex gloves or disposable gloves that can be bought from the chemist or supermarket. Wash the glove and ﬁll with water. Seal the glove with rubber band and freeze until hard. It takes about 24 hours. Dip the frozen hand in warm water and peel off the glove.

Buccaneers start the season strong The BNU Buccaneers are looking in great shape after an impressive recruitment drive with over 40+ new players joining the team this year and still growing. The team have been training hard for the past 7 weeks and will be going to the team’s training camp at a local boarding school this weekend to finalise and polish their skills before the season opener against Kingston University on November 4. The match will be a competitive physical game but the Buccaneers are confident on getting their first win of the season in week one. BNU have announced the three captains as Danny Wallace, Klaus Rostowski and Chris Geldard It’s not too late to join, play or to just help out within the team. The team are still looking for some heavy set guys that want to play American football. The team are full of guys from all walks of life, all ages and all sizes. We have ex-football guys, ex-rugby guys and guys who have played no sport before. The Buccaneers are the most diverse team at the university and have a place for everyone. Exciting times ahead for BNU Futsal! With the Futsal squad entering its ﬁrst full season as a club at the University, It has had a great start with just over ﬁfty freshers turning out over two weeks of trials to make it in to the squad for the season. This makes the returning students train that little bit harder to secure their place in the ever growing squad. Chairman and Coach Nathan Baker has been given a right selection headache as the level of players turning up at these trials have been great!

The squad will be cut down to twenty five where the squad will then prepare as they count down to their first fixture against a very experienced well organised Brighton team where Bucks, in their first ever fixture, lost 10-0 last season. With the influx of first years and positive signs in training BNU, Futsal are looking to get their season off to a flying start on Sunday 28 October in Brighton! UP THE BUCKS!

Check out our Recreational Activities package and Editor Additional Skills workshops and make Ash Coles sure you are making the most of your time at Bucks, alongside that all the sports seasons start now so if you aren’t playing (and it’s not too late to join something!) then try and get along to a game a support your teams. This week I’d just like to talk to you about what lies ahead for your Union and about how you can get involved in shaping our direction. Jack, Naomi and I have come together and written our ten priorities for the academic year. We hope that you agree these are well balanced and reflect your views of where our work should be done!

Stress Awareness week 5-9 November National stress awareness day takes place on 7 November and to support this we will have various events, information points and campaigns going on throughout the week. The week aims to promote ways in which to alleviate stress and how to avoid the main sources of stress. Keep an eye out around campus throughout the week of 5-9 November to see what we have on offer. The cooking team and a parmesan and mushroom risotto made by the students. Cooking with Rice Course As part of ‘Give it a Go week,’ Bucks Students’ Union organised for students to attend a cooking with rice workshop in a professional kitchen at Uxbridge College. Students had their own stoves to work from and were given demonstrations from a trained chef and then applied themselves to create what the chef had showed them. Students created parmesan and mushroom risotto, and a brown rice chicken stir fry. It was a very handson experience and the students have said it has given them inspiration to want to try new meal options as well as gaining some great tips about how to make sure no food is wasted. Our Cooking with Rice course was a great success....and we now hopefully have a few more students who can cook an appetising meal that doesn’t cost a fortune. Water sports On the 3 and 10 October, 12 students from Uxbridge headed over to Bray Lake to join up with students from High Wycombe to take part in water sports activity days. These two days allowed students to take part in a whole host of water sports including Sailing, Wind Surfing and Kayaking. The activity days were organised by Sport For Fun who are now going to offer students a six week learn to sail course and a six week Kayaking course which start Wednesday 24 October. University news TV stars from the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow attended the launch of a company set up by Bucks New University for our conservation and restoration graduates to access furniture conservation work and private commissions. Called Bucks Conservation, the pioneering enterprise will channel commercial conservation and restoration projects to BA (Hons) and MA Furniture Conservation, Restoration and Decorative Arts recent alumni to help them make the transition from education to employment within the conservation sector. The new company was officially launched at Fernandez & Wells, at Somerset House, London, on Monday 8 October. John Bly and Lennox Cato, who regularly appear on the Antiques Roadshow, attended the launch. The University has undertaken furniture conservation work and private commissions for over 20 years, working with prestigious clients such as The Royal Collection, the V&A, National Trust and Lord Rothschild. Private collectors and custodians from the heritage sector have supported the students by providing projects for them to work on. They have also provided locations for ‘live projects’ where the students work on site, undertaking live restoration and conservation projects as part of the degree course. Students work with historical and often priceless pieces, as well as more modern 20th century items. Now, under the guidance of the University’s furniture conservation experts, graduates will gain valuable experience in a commercial environment, where they will be employed for 12 to 18 months developing their conservation skills and expertise as well as sharpening their business skills. Selection to join the new company will be by interview and a portfolio review. Believed to be the first alumni business model of its kind in the UK, Dr Campbell Norman-Smith, Course Leader of the MA Furniture: Conservation and Decorative Arts, says: “The launch of Bucks Conservation is a unique opportunity to support our most talented graduates and extend our expertise to a wider client base. We have developed an outstanding reputation over the years and often have an oversupply of commissions. This meets supply and demand and provides our graduates with exceptional commercial experience which will give them an edge when looking for employment in the conservation and restoration professions.” Recent projects undertaken by the Department of Furniture at Bucks include the restoration of a 1937-38 Isokon moulded birch plywood lounge chair owned by Isokon Plus, conservation of a George II Console table from Wilton House, owned by the Earl of Pembroke, cleaning of a gilt frame surrounding a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds from the Courtauld Institute of Art, and restoration of an original Panton Vitra chair.

Bucks graduate enjoying career in the dental industry Graduate Rebecca Evans is getting her teeth into a successful career working as a brand manager for the market leading dental products manufacturer, DENTSPLY and paid tribute to her education at Bucks New University. Rebecca graduated from Bucks New University with a first-class honours degree in Marketing with Human Resource Management in 2002. She joined DENTSPLY in 2011, having previously worked as a marketing executive and later marketing manager for the British Dental Trade Association (BDTA), where she also carried out further training with The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and gained an MSc in Strategic Marketing. Rebecca said: “I felt well-prepared for a career in marketing through my degree at Buckinghamshire New University, thanks to the balance of theoretical grounding and practical experience I gained working with industry during my studies, as well as the high quality of teaching. “My qualification clearly played a major part in securing my first role with the British Dental Trade Association and I haven’t really looked back. Venue Manager Bucks Students’ Union Chris Smith > 1. What made you want to be Venue Manager of Bucks Students’ Union? Venue and Events management has always been what I wanted to do. For me, the thing about working for a union is that it’s ever changing and the aim is to stay current and exciting for students. That has been the main appeal of working in a student venue. > 2. What are your aims for the Venue in the near future? I’d like to think we’ve done pretty well in the four years I’ve been here. Through the Big Deal and confidence from Sabbatical Officers and Senior Management, I’m pleased we have improved our services and the way we are seen by students - whilst also having a commercial return that goes straight back into running what we do here. There are a few bits we didn’t quite complete this summer. A better more accessible and inviting smoking area for our customers day to day was a big one for me. Building on the success of last year’s May Ball; delivering a bigger more exciting layout for next year’s Ball. We’re tight on space, but there’s more that can be done here! But generally just continuing the tight operation we run to ensure we are the safest and more enjoyable place to go out in town. Every member of staff puts 110% into trying to make this happen. > 3. How is the Union different to others? Although there are a lot less students at this University than at others, I think the advantage of this is the community that is built. What I love about this Union is that we’re at the hub of all that. > 4. Where did you study and what degree did you do? I actually studied here many moons ago. I studied Music Industry - mainly because at the time it was only one of two universities running the course. Plus I couldn’t ignore the instant attraction of the Wellesbourne campus. > 5. What were you like as a university student? Ha. Erm... well I didn’t really the actual studying part... so much so I decided not to complete a dissertation in my final year. I think I’ve always had that ‘get up and go attitude’ and at the time I managed a range of artists/bands with a few friends. This took up a lot of my time but I wouldn’t change that what so ever. I also DJ’d alot. But looking at some of our current students; I’d probably say I was pretty boring! > 6. If you could give any advice to a student, what would it be? Probably the old cliché of getting all you can out of your time here. I quickly realised that I was the one paying for this course - so I wanted to get out of it what would benefit me in the future. I would take more time on assignments I felt benefitted me and get involved in work out of the course that may give me further opportunities. You can’t sit around and wait for anything to drop on your lap > 7. As it’s Halloween coming up, what scary film did you last watch at the cinema? Wow I can’t even remember. I do tend to watch a quite a few as well... I’m rubbish. Is it ‘Sinister’? I’m keen to see that. My girlfriend is having none of it what so ever though. > 8. Where would your ideal place to go on holiday be? As much as sun, sea & sand is amazing; I don’t actually mind the freezing cold and could quite happily have a holidays in the snow. I’m yet to see the northern lights, so maybe Finland/Norway etc. I am also keen to take a proper road trip across various parts of North America. I missed out on these summer opportunities as a student! > 9. What’s your idea of the perfect Halloween? Coming to our themed Frat House on the 31st of course. We don’t disappoint with our Halloween themed club nights, it’s going to be a good’n. Get down here early. Doors are 8pm.

Reaching the Heights Third-year BA (Hons) Sports Management and Golf Studies students Tom Bennett, Steve Dutton and Ben Warren are to carry on working part-time at Wycombe Heights Golf Centre in High Wycombe following successful six-month spells of work experience in golf operations management. The centre’s Head Professional, Chris Reeve, said: “They learnt about various aspects of managing and running the centre, took everything on board very well, and we are delighted they will be continuing to work with us.” The work experience opportunity at Wycombe Heights Golf Centre has been taken up by three more students this year. Since the beginning of this academic year, Buckinghamshire New University has increased the price of replacing the ID cards if lost/ stolen/damaged. Previous years the price of replacing it had been £5 but now it has been increased double to £10. Many students are obviously not throwing a party about this, as students have enough money to splash out on rent, maintenance, leisure and many other expenses which involve in being a student. Is it fair for the University to charge more for replacing the ID card? It is an essential requirement to being a student at Bucks and is needed whenever accessing the building. However, was there any specific reason for the price inflation? Why is it £10?

Is it to encourage students to not lose them? What if the card was not lost or stolen, but damaged through ‘wear ‘n’ tear’? It could be argued that the University should provide better quality ID cards if the price of replacing them is increased. This is the first time the university has increased the price of replacing these cards and with tuition fees already increasing, it can be hard-going on Bucks students. It is clear the student view on this issue, but what about the University? Is it a reasonable inflation? Will this affect the student’s perspective of the University? This is an issue that may arise in publicity as the year progresses.

Hellfire Caves - a Halloween jewel in West Wycombe Caves in Wycombe are something that is just not mentioned or probably not even heard of. As Halloween is approaching, it is obviously on everyone’s mind what costume to wear, what party to go to, what is the next new ‘trick ‘n’ treat’ interpretation this year. However, Wycombe has much to offer to your student experience of living in Wycombe and this month it’s very much in season to visit the next best scary thing - a trip to the Hellfire Caves. These caves have centuries of history embedded in them, hand carved by labourers for the nobleman Sir Francis Dashwood in the 1750s. This was the secret meeting place he had arranged for his notorious Hell Fire Club. Sir Francis later on became Chancellor of the Exchequer and was also a close friend of Benjamin Franklin who visited West Wycombe often. These caves are surely to add to the thrill and mischievousness to your Halloween this year, venturing through historic tunnels, absorbing the echoes of ancient voices and stepping through underground by candle light alone. Discover your Halloween with a choice of tricking or treating as you take a journey from ‘Steward’s cave’ where you come across old barbarian tools used by 18th Century labourers, winding down to Paul Whitehead’s chamber who is said to have left his heart when he died as a

Franklin Cave is dedicated to Benjamin Franklin, who was a visitor of the Caves and admired it for Sir Francis’ whimsical imagination and puzzling creativity. These are not the only caves you will be treading on before you stumble into the grand Banqueting Hall in which secret luxurious parties were held all with exclusive members. Before you know it you’re about a thousand feet from the entrance of the Caves! If that wasn’t enough, you’ll find yourself opened into the River Styx which is named after the legendary river that separated the world to the underworld. It is now a pool of water which still carries a wispy eeriness that can set off a wispy chill down your spine. Finally you’ll find yourself spiralling down to the Inner Temple which is situated three hundred feet beneath the church at the entrance of the caves. Stay Safe this Halloween Halloween is a time for ghosts, witches, vampires, superheroes and sweets. However, Halloween isn’t for everyone. Think about Beatrice, the old woman who lives down the road to you. She doesn’t Student Editor want loud, drunk people coming home Guy Humphrey down her road. This worsens during Halloween with a lot of people being on the streets. There have been many Halloween incidences, some comical and some not. This include a drunken Oompa Loompa who was arrested after racially abusing teenagers in Nottingham, as well as a rather serious incident in 2009, where a man and women were stabbed and murdered in Norwich. Whilst we aren’t saying that because it’s Halloween, you are going to cause havoc, there are certain things that you should think about to keep you safe, as well as others around you:

> If you do go out make sure you lock your doors and anything valuable. It takes two seconds, and may save you a lot of money if you do get burgled! > If you do decide to go to the Students’ Union during the Halloween season, or indeed anytime, make sure you don’t walk home alone and walk home together, get the taxi or take the free SSHH bus home on Wednesdays and Fridays. > Put spare money in a separate pocket just in case you need it for a cab home. > Don’t egg people’s houses. It’s not a good idea, and if you get caught, you could get fined, or worse! > If you do decide to walk home alone, which you really shouldn’t, then act confidently or try and get a taxi home.

Horror Films You May Not Have Seen So it’s Halloween season and you’re looking for a good horror film. I could list some great ones like The Shining, The Ring, The Exorcist, The Thing, Psycho, Dawn of the Dead, etc. but I won’t. Mostly because they’re obvious and I want to expose some lesser known films that deserve more recognition. The Mist (15) Released 2007 Running time: 126 min

After a severe thunderstorm the night before, David, his son and his neighbour head to the supermarket to gather supplies as a mist descends upon the small town. On their way they pass the army and local police heading towards it. The town’s supermarket is full of shoppers who have no clue what is going on until an old man runs into the market with a bloody nose and declares “Something in the mist!” He tells them to close the door. The Mist comes straight from a Stephen King Novel and is directed by Frank Darabont, known from his previous King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. The Mist is captivating with several genuinely scary sequences and containing characters which you root for and others that you truly hate including a lady that you will come to hate more than Dolores Umbridge.

The Challenging (15) Released 1980 Running time: 107 min After the death of his wife and child in a car accident, composer John Russell (George C. Scott) rents an old mansion to concentrate on his work. Soon after he moves into the house, strange occurrences begin. The Changeling is a suspense driven film with an eerie soundtrack that works perfectly for the film. While the plot does evolve slowly it’s able to make you jump without the need of blood and gore instead relying on atmosphere to make it chilling. It may seem tame and not scary by today’s standards but like The Shining it holds up well due to the direction from Peter Medak and George C. Scott’s performance as he is able to make John Russell believable without making you shout “Why are you doing that?”

Tucker and Dale are two not-so-bright but loveable hillbillies on vacation in their cabin in the woods. At the same time a bunch of college kids show up and assume they’re psychotic rednecks out to murder them. This Horror/Comedy takes the typical Horror genre tropes and reverses them. The plot is made up of lots of misunderstood situations which play out hilariously. Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine play Tucker and Dale with great wit and humour that you’ll find yourself laughing at on many occasions. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil does for the hillbilly-slasher genre what Shaun of the Dead did for the zombie genre. By: Scott Matthewson

Growing up, when I was in Japan I was labeled as “Indian”; when I was in India I was considered “Japanese”. In England I am (somehow) American. I was always welcomed into the cultures I was surrounded by, but never considered a part of it. Wherever I go I am, and forever will be, an outsider.

To some this may be a depressing thought; and in all honesty it can be bothersome. It would be nice to give a definite answer whenever somebody asked me where I was from. As bothersome as it may be, there is still a bright side. As an outsider it is easier for me to stand back and observe different cultures and people. Throughout the years I was able to take note of the differences between the cultures; but more importantly I was able to take note of the similarities. From these similarities I understood from an early age that at the end of the day we are all humans. Here are some of the similarities I noticed throughout the year: > 1. Everyone loves food Everybody has to eat, and everybody enjoys a good meal. Granted, the definition of “a good meal” will differ according to the culture; however the satisfaction that comes from a good meal is one we all yearn for. There are certain types of food which most all of the cultures will appreciate. A good example is chocolate. Aside from the actual meal, the actual event of the meal is also an important similarity. People seem to like eating as a group and enjoy the company of others while eating.

Solar Panels smash expectations The solar panels installed on top of the link extension between Timberlake and the Red Shed at the High Wycombe Campus have produced fifteen per cent more energy than targeted, following a highly successful August and September. Over the two months, the panels produced 11,200 kWh of electricity, which is equivalent to running two medium-sized houses for a year. In addition they have saved more than six tonnes of CO2 which otherwise would have been sent into the atmosphere. Library Update The Library Service has adopted a Google-style all-in-one system called LibrarySearch for users to search for everything from books and journals to databases and information on the Internet, all from one place. LibrarySearch is intuitive and allows students and visitors to search the Library’s electronic and physical resources, from books to journals, articles and images, and e-books and videos, using a single search box. What up people, my name is Lee Malone and this is “You Got This, Bro!”, the only article designed to have you lapping Usain, and not just on Mario Kart! Every month, we come at you with the knowledge you need to get motivated to do what you want to do and in record time. As always, this month we’re whooping’ ass. We’ve all heard the analogy about the rocking chair, right? “Worrying is like a rocking chair - It gives you something to do but doesn’t get you anywhere.” And hey, that’s great, we’re not 90 years old so I’m pretty sure we can come up with something better than that. Look, I get it, nerves suck. They stop you chasing that dream everyone said was too hard, they stop you making that move on that guy or girl you’ve always had a crush on and more than anything, they tell you “NO” when every other part of your body wants to say “YES”. They suck pretty bad. But they’re beatable. Now I know a lot of people like to think they’re just not built a certain way. How some people are born with confidence, natural sporting ability, etc and other’s just aren’t. But you can’t limit yourself to a belief like that.

Consider this a game show everything’s up for grabs. Matter fact, consider this a video game - what would you do if life had it’s own save points? If you could save your game, then take the plunge on whatever you were feeling nervous about and then go back to your old save point should it not turn out the right way. Imagine that scenario. Done? Great. Now live like that anyway. One of my favourite quotes is by a man named Phil Brooks. Phil, take it away.

“Doubt f***s everything. Take any substance, no matter how strong, sprinkle generously with doubt and watch that motherf***er crumble. Me? I’m unf***withable.” So here’s my question. What if you lived the next week without doubt? What if you took doubt out of the equation the next time you were nervous? Do you think you’d be any worse off or would you find yourself doing the things you’ve always wanted to? If you are even 51% certain you want to do something, just shut up and do it. You’ll be a thousand times happier for it. I saw a picture online once that said “There are an infinite

amount of parallel universes out there in existence, including a billion where you are married to Emma Watson.”Now while it’s pretty depressing that I live in this one, not any of the ones with Emma Watson, I have an Afro or Spiderman powers or anything else - I’d hate to get to the end of my road, only to find out that this is one of the ones where I COULD have made something happen and backed out. That I could have lived an awesome existence and CHOSE, THROUGH FEAR, not to. We all feel embarrassed when we do something stupid. But when we DON’T do something we could have done, you feel fucking crushed. So it’s time to grow a hairy set. It’s time to weigh the pros and throw out the cons. It’s time to take our 51% and act on it. Do the things you want to do and when you’re old and wrinkly, at least you’ll have done some awesome stuff. So take this week and live it a little differently. You can live through embarrassment. But you won’t WANT to live through regret. Go kick some ass this week. Roll the paper into round balls being sure to squeeze out as much moisture as you can while rolling (you can make any size you would like). > 10. Let them dry for a few days - rolling them every several hours - until they are completely dry.

Heymoonshaker

Dave Crowe and Andrew Balcon have been street musicians and buskers since they met in 2009 in New Zealand. Now a signed band, things are starting to get somewhere. You might remember Dave Crowe who appeared as a beat boxer on Britain’s Got Talent in 2008. Since then the pair have performed at countless festivals and performed all over the world. The Bucks Student caught up with them after they performed at the Students’ Union: Andrew Balcon: The album was written in Gothenburg last year in Sweden, while Dave (Dave Crowe) was living in Dalslonged. We’ve just been breaking in the pretty harsh Swedish winter recording this album in November, within six hours. It’s a ten track album. The guy who recorded and mastered the album is Victor Benzen - Swedish eccentric who described the recording as: “You know man, you put milk in the coconut and you passed it around and look for the coconut. You have the coconut.” Dave Crowe: That was Victor’s way to describe our sound. When it came to the recording day, we had enough money for one day. We were 45 minutes late with the recording time and we were worrying. We didn’t want to piss him off. > How did you manage to record an album in such short time? D.C: Andy had three riffs prepared. Those three riffs came out with three down. Every track was recorded within three takes, apart from one, just track 7, with six takes. After those six takes we got it. It was tough.

> It’s gonna be bit longer than the first time? D.C: We will record it for four days. I believe we will write the next album in a day. I truly believe in that. I know what Andy wants to write. We never play new songs on stage, we only jam. Those jams becomes manifestations of the tracks we will sell. The words are made in a day, and my beats come in the end. A.B: The words are about what’s going on, about my experience with Gothenburg at the time, and it was just wet and grey.

> What made you guys to choose that place? A.B: It’s a lovely space, which really shows off France as a place with beauty, atmosphere and chemistry. We played in France quite a lot as well. D.C: It’s complete heaven for any human being. It’s an old wind mill which has been reconstructed and redesigned into a recording studio. We got the finest sound enginer I’ve ever met - he’s wonderful at what he does. He lives in a bunk bed and has more skills between his fingers and his elbows than I have within my whole body. > I have never heard a mix of rock guitars and beat-boxing. When I spoke with Sixten (Heymoonshaker manager) he described your sound as beatbox blues. How would you describe your sound to the people who’s never heard before about Heymoonshaker? A.B: Contemporary blues house with jazz influenced back beats summarised in a infinitive bassy trudtch. We are gaining an opportunity within a music scene to combine our skills. > Where does the name Heymoonshaker come from? Do you wanna shake your audience? A.B: It’s based around the kind of chant, which was mastered by Eric Delavey and it’s basically an exclamation on his use of colour within his work. > Any particular influences? A.B: Gentelman’s Dub Club [performing in the venue 24 November], Daft Punk, Hound Dog Taylor. D.C: The Band, Howlin Wolf, one of the best bands of all time! Live dubstep band -Coda. Disraeli and the Small Gods - with Jewish double bass player and beatboxer - Bellatrix. > May we expect any changes in the sound of your new album out in February? A.B: Our new release will illustrate our sound with my influences as a musician and today’s commercial music as well as blues back beat. I thinks it’s gonna be heavier.

Music Reviews This 17-year-old pop star in the making is about to unleash her new, fresh sound onto the airwaves. Real name, Amy Kabba, the young South Londoner originally from Sierra Leone, is determined to bring back the 90s and make it ‘fun, fresh and modern’ – in her own words. With influences from Tina Turner, Blondie, Madonna, Miami Sound Machine, her ‘idol’ Janet Jackson and K-pop music, her distinctive edgy sound is evident on all her songs. A*M*E currently has four songs, ‘City Lights’, ‘Find A Boy’, ‘Ride Or Die’ and upcoming debut single ‘Play The Game Boy’. ‘City Lights’ is an upbeat dance-pop R&B track, produced by MNEK, who also produced Misha B’s debut single ‘Homerun’. The club-friendly track featuring rapper Bartoven, starts with A*M*E singing about going out and leaving her worries behind over a catchy African inspired beat tinged with 90s organ house synths. This leads to the infectious chorus assorted with fast paced hand claps, R&B melodies. ‘Find A Boy’ is an uptempo dance track featuring grime artist MC Righteous, which was produced by Naughty Boy, who has also

New Artist Alert! produced music for Emeli Sande, Wiley, Leona Lewis and Tinie Tempah. The songs starts off with a dark and menacing beat before transforming into an incredibly catchy 90s house influenced four to the floor beat during the chorus. A*M*E demands someone to ‘find a boy’ and make him love her and give her everything, over a heavy bass driven beat layered glitchy, minimal synths reminiscent of early UK-garage tracks. The song, which sounds like a 90s house classic, should be what an R&B-dance track should sound like. ‘Ride Or Die’ is a chirpy pop song with some Caribbean flavour. Sounding like the result of Keisha Buchanan, MIA and Major Lazer collaborating in a studio, the dancehallpop stomper of a song would be something Cover Drive or Rihanna wouldn’t mind for themselves. A*M*E asks her ‘Mr Right’ if he wants her to be his ‘ride or die’ over a hard hitting dancehall beat littered with sirens and wobbly bass synths. A*M*E brings some edge into Island tune, with a half-rap, half-sing style in the verses and the Major Lazer-like breakdown in the middle is irresistible to dance to.

‘Play The Game Boy’, A*M*E’s upcoming debut single is one of her best yet. The incredible pop song, influenced by Korean pop and synthpop brings the 80s back to 2012 with the song’s chiptune melody sounding similar to Chaka Khan’s ‘Aint Nobody’. A*M*E sings about ‘bringing the heat’, getting wild and dancing to the break of dawn’ over the videogame-like beat. The earworm of a chorus, ‘Play the game boy…game, game boy’ is certain to get into your head after a few listens. A*M*E chucks some urban flavour into it showcasing her rhyming skills as she talk-raps in her London accent later in the song. Being quirky, catchy and different from anything else on the radio currently, this song definitely has the formula of a chart success. With her distinctive image and style being already receiving the support of X Factor judge Gary Barlow, who is a fan and signed her onto his label, its a definitely a yes from me!

Deadmau5 is back again with his latest album. Joel Zimmerman (deadmau5) has been known to dabble in various genres, from Progressive Trance to Dubstep, and Electro House over the years; and this album is no different. The opening track, ‘Superliminal’, leaves a lot to be desired however. Based around a similar rhythm and feel to the opening track (‘FML’) from a previous album, ‘Superliminal’ doesn’t bring any big buildup to a drop, but is a simple six and a half minutes of uninspiring synth modulation and the same constant droning rhythm. Not a great start. But this is where it starts to get interesting, ‘Channel 42’ is a gem worth waiting for. deadmau5’s latest collaboration with Wolfgang Gartner, this Electro House number can only be described as epic. Starting with an uplifting deadmau5 chord progression, and building up to the kind of psychedelic drop that would leave Austin Powers rubbing hiseyes. And it just keeps building up! This track blows most current Electro House right out of the water. ‘The Veldt’. Based on a short story of the same title, could be seen as deadmau5’s answer to his track ‘I Remember’: catchy, moody, uplifting, but also somehow sad. Who’s familiar with ‘Strobe’? deadmau5’s Progressive

Trance classic. ‘Fn Pig’ shows the other side of that coin. Progressive Trance with an Electro House bite on the other end, and some of the most inspiring synth work I’ve heard in years interwoven into every layer. Of course Joels latest single, ‘Professional Griefers’ is tied to the highest budget electronic music video of all time (giant robot deadmi5e - or is it deadmau5’s - fighting it out! Youtube that NOW), the track features ‘Gerard Way’ from ‘My Chemical Romance’. But don’t enter the track expecting Emo lyrics. This is definitely an angry one, but the vocals carry a huge energy and character, making this track a stand out dance floor song. ‘Maths’ is another stand out and shows off deadmau5’s ‘Daft Punk’ side, and if that doesn’t sell it to you then nothing else I can say will do it. I have my quarrels with a few tracks, but for £8 you get: 13 original tracks, 3 bonus tracks, AND the music videos for ‘Professional Griefers’ & ‘The Veldt’ thrown in (on iTunes). My highlights are ‘Channel 42’, and ‘Professional Griefers’. I won’t be able to switch off this album for weeks, and it’s so varied that most people will find at least a few tracks they love.

Genre 1 : Neo-Soul Neo-Soul is defined as R&B with a mix of 1970s-style soul and elements of 1980s hip-hop. R&B with more self, more substance, more soul. Soul with revival. Although it is a paradox. Neo is new. Soul is timeless. Fortunately ‘neo-soul’ was invented as a marketing name and is not defying any reason. The lyrics contain deeply personal, political and love based narratives, which contrast to the hedonistic mainstream club style hip hop and completes the more profound listening experience.

Erykah Badu Pioneer, The Queen She is known as the Queen of Neo-Soul, although her estate extends well into the depths of the eclectic, she surely is the number one crowning lady. A reluctance to use the word groove, because it’s automatic connection to aging hippies, unfortunately removes a perfectly appropriate adjective of Badu. Her music is relaxed, and equally, relaxing. The few year gaps between each of her five albums are reflected in the depth of her lyrics, a reflection of her life and self-evolution. But the sound consistently remains a no effort smooth jamming beauty.

Lianne La Havis Contemporary A fresh London singer often described as folk and soul, but fits comfortably under a Neo-Soul label. Some songs are breezy; others have a powerful and punchy beat. Lianne has noted Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu as her key influences, almost too obviously. But she sways away from the bass which holds up most of the 90s soul and boasts her skilled, crisp guitar track. Perhaps a New-Neo-Soul label would be more suitable, she resides slightly nearer the pop spectrum, with her cleaner sound. But her lyrics are just as charmingly personal and her voice just as strong.

Her album ‘Good Girls Rarely Make History’ begins with a piece of her spoken word poetry. ‘...Good girls rarely make history but I fly, I give a damn about too much...’ A perfect introduction. Her songs spill confidence, and pour a strong influence of political questions. Having been brought up by South American parents who she explains, are lucky to be alive. Her mother escaped imprisonment and her father unbelievably survived execution. She has a right to give a damn, and a right to tell a story. Freedom of speech was created for her. She may not be an activist in the way her parents were, but she chose poetry through which to tell her story, share her opinion and inspire others. For example, song, ‘The Pacifist’ is an honest, open letter to world leaders basically telling them to sort it out. Her MCing leaves a hip hop mark on her music. Her lyrics have soul, and her music has groove. Her smoky poetry bars are so clearly opposed to the hedonism of R&B, expressing “How many diamond watches, platinum bracelets, Bentleys, and video hoes, can one rapper have?” On paper her, strong, black, female, love, politics, and groove are common Neo-Soul, in reality, her personality, life, stories, lyrics, unquestionably unique. Do not be fooled by her sweet smile and delicate smoky voice. She doesn’t need reviews, she knows she is talented, and if you disagree, I doubt she would care, but she will definitely have something to say about it.

Notable others Amy Winehouse - powerfully personal lyrics. An artist with emotion. The Roots - to quote themselves “…like real music, sweet music, soul music.” Jill Scott - powerhouse and strong competitor to the thrown. Wicked is a musical currently running in London’s West End in the Apollo Victoria. It is about the untold story of the witches from the Wizard of Oz - Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the Good Witch of the North). The acting, singing and music which is all live and including a symphony orchestra providing the music throughout. It will be a treat for anyone rain or shine. It is definitely a good time to go see this extraordinary musical that will surely leave you spell-bound this Halloween.

“been there, done that concept but enjoyable enough” Ruby Sparks (15) Released 12/10/12 (UK) Running time: 104 min It wouldn’t be too much of a statement to confess that writer has conceited at one point or another, their perfect dream girl. The perfect girlfriend who just understands them. Centring the writer at the focal point of their life, only to bend at the whim of the their demands. This might sound somewhat depressing but as unflatteringly true as it is, its inevitability. This is the starting off point when looking at Zoe Kazan’s first break into the screenwriting world with directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (whose previous work Little Miss Sunshine was a trouble minded crowd pleaser) behind the camera. Calvin (Kazan’s real life boyfriend Paul Dano) is a successful but immature writer who is said early on by Steve Coogan’s Langdon to be a great American literate. With his first and only novel (which was followed up by several short story collections) entering the world when Calvin was in college, he was shot into and shot down from stardom after fading away. This frustration has made him depressed and uninspired. When Calvin’s psychologist Dr. Rosenthal (a greying, bearded Elliot

Gould) tasks him with writing only one page about his pet dog Scotty, Calvin finds a new inspiration when dreaming about his perfect dream girl. Calvin enjoys writing about her so much that, to him, she feels real enough. Waking up one morning, hungry to work on his new novel, Calvin discovers that his dream girl has manifested into reality. Ruby (Zoe Kazan) can be said to be one of the purest forms of the ‘manic pixie dream girl’ which critic Nathan Rabin coined in his review for Elizabethtown. Rudy’s red hair, short summer dresses, and off colour stockings could -at least for some audience members- be seen as the perfect girl. To others, Ruby is an obnoxious caricature of what men expect women to be like. This is an interesting element that the movie doesn’t dodge as Calvin and Harry, his brother (Chris Messina), discuss Ruby whilst she happily cooks in the kitchen. “Tell me for all mankind, you won’t let this go to waste.” Harry spouts to convince Calvin. This machismo is dotted around the film as its sinister subtext (the ability to control and change the person you say you love) becomes a bigger issue towards the end after Calvin discovers his ability to change Ruby in any way he sees fit. The word hipster is thrown around these days. If you have a Mac: you’re a hipster.

If you like literature: you’re a hipster. If you recognise the names of Woody Allen, F. Scott Fitzgerald, or Humphrey Bogart: you’re a hipster. Being a hipster is a part of being in just about any subculture but what we deem the word hipster as today is never more present then here. Calvin writes with a typewriter only to upgrade to a Mac later. An understandable upgrade but if you have strong feelings of contempt towards Urban Outfitter drones then you will most likely not enjoy Ruby Sparks. Kazan has managed to merge Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with (500) Days of Summer, and if you couldn’t stomach the white upper-middle classes complaining about love in their swanky apartments, then Ruby Sparks isn’t for you. It doesn’t have more substance then what the trailer shows, so that would be your best bet if on the fence. Dayton and Faris’ direction is also nothing more than to service the story straight up. Well lit rooms and clear framing explain everything in the story but it’s Kazan’ script which lays everything out for the audience to imagine. It is a rather ‘been there, done that’ concept but enjoyable enough to see it once again. By: Oliver Hunt

Perks of Being a Wallflower “a coming of age story, as well as a teenage drama” Perks of Being a Wallflower (12A) Released 03/10/12 (UK) Running time: 103 min

Logan Lerman, otherwise known as the lead in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, plays Charlie, a socially awkward, lonely boy who we follow as he starts high school for the very first time. Taken under the wings of step brother and sister Patrick and Sam, played by Ezra Miller and Emma Watson and then the high school drama unfolds. Partially a coming of age story, as well as a teenage drama, Perks of Being a Wallflower, whilst good in some parts comes off as a little try hard throughout the film as well as partially unrealistic and somewhat farfetched. Sam (Watson) is the love interest. Watson is known for playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series, as if you didn’t know that, and the audience - myself included - are used to hearing her in an English accent. The fact that she has an American accent was one of the things I could not get my head around in the film. Every time she spoke, I just found it bizarre that she had an American accent. This is probably through no fault of her own regardless. Throughout we are reminded of how ‘different’ the characters are, with their

alternative music style, personalities and clothes, yet Sam did not know the song David Bowie, ‘Heroes,’ when it comes on in the car radio, yet she regularly listens to The Smiths and other such ‘different’ bands. Whilst this may seem like a small portion of the film, it does actually play quite largely to the overall plotline and it is somewhat baffling as to how she does not know the song. Patrick, the camp and out there gay guy is the other main friend Charlie has. A somewhat stereotyped role, with stereotyped vulnerabilities and plotline. I could literally predict what he was going to do as the film progressed. Nonetheless I did find the standard of acting and emotion impeccable in regards to that particular sub plot. Littered throughout are references to a particular, emotional topic that is never fully explained, although I guessed it pretty early on, until the end of the film which is that of child abuse. I won’t say anymore, as I won’t ruin the ending for you, but I was still shocked that what I thought was going to happen in the film actually happened. Based on the novel by Stephen Chbosky, whilst the film is good in places and there are some thought provoking elements, my overall view was that it was an over-hyped film that was trying to be different and quirky, and something about it just didn’t work.

As a student, who may or may not have that much money, I have resorted to watching many films, which in this case tend to be action. Here are my reviews of what I watched:

The sequel to Taken is definitely a movie that has been awaited. This time retired CIA agent Bryan Mills is targeted by the relatives of his criminals who he had killed while rescuing his daughter. Now they are after him and while trying to get to him, they also abduct his ex-wife and his daughter is also forced into this spiral action. Without giving too much away, go see it for yourselves, you won’t be disappointed.

Brad Pitt is an assassin in Louisiana during the recession in America. A political theme is evident throughout the movie and shows how even gangsters can hit economic hardship and lead to brutal killings and disaster among the underworld mobs. The plot of the movie is not very well thought out and the story does not seamlessly run through. Not as good as it is on posters!

This sci-fi action movie with Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a clever and exciting thriller. The film is set in 2072 when time travel exists but is only used illegally by the underworld. Time travel is used to assassinate people from the past and eliminate these unwanted targets. These assassins are called ‘loopers’. Time travel is used as a medium to set the story but it is in fact the critical issue that Joe (Joseph Gordon- Levitt) faces when he has to assassinate his future self (Bruce Willis). The movie shows how the character faces this problem. The director, who spent 10 years playing with this idea of time travel, seems to have made it a success. One of the best movie releases of the year.

A gangster movie based on a bootlegging clan during the 1930s depression era in America. Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy and Jason Clarke are the invincible brothers and local legends in Franklin County, Virginia, but as a corrupt lawman (Guy Pearce) who is also a psychopath decides to crack down on bootlegging, the Bondurant brothers are not prepared to give up with a brutal fight. Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy definitely are the screen stars in this movie and it is definitely a wellcaptured story into people’s lives during this era. The characters definitely are definitely the movie-makers which develop throughout the movie. Definitely worth a watch.

SU review

Flirt! 90’s Glow It was everything 90’s at the Students’ Union on Friday. Denim on denim, funky shirts and back to front caps. Those were the days. I was dressed in my best ‘Saved By The Bell’ finery and danced along to the Macarena, Destiny’s Child and a cheeky bit of S Club 7 and B*Witched. I really enjoyed myself, actually knowing most of the songs that came on, and

> 5. Clear Price: £1.49 Clear is a list-keeping app exclusive to the Apple App store. It has a simple and easy to use interface, which takes full advantage of the iPhone’s multi- touch capability. Its quirky sounds and robust colors add to the overall experience of the app in an elegantly subtle way. It is a must have app; with the only downside being it will cost you £1.49 on the UK App store.

With student loans finally coming in, there is an increase in the number of new tablets and cellphones around Campus. Contrary to popular belief, these devices can be used for more than just tweeting a picture of your egg and cheese sandwich and playing Angry Birds all day. If used correctly, these devices can and will make you more productive. There are five apps in particular that will significantly improve your productivity. > 4. Evernote Price: free Evernote is a multi-platform app with the main purpose being helping the users remember all of their ideas. The app does this by having a slick interface that allows users to take notes, capture photos, and record both audio and video on the fly. Once recorded, this content is readily accessible on your computer and all other devices. Evernote is free and reliable, however iOS users will find that some of its unique features have been made redundant with the release of iOS6 and iCloud.

> 3. Genius Scan + Price: free Genius Scan + is an app that turns your phone into a scanner. The app simply enhances the photo taken by your camera, and turns it into an easy to read JPEG or PDF file. This app proves especially useful when having to make a memorandum from a whiteboard.

> 2. Quickscan Price: free Quickscan is almost a necessity for any student on a budget. The app allows the user to scan the barcode with your phone’s camera. With this data, the app not only identifies the item, but also lists all the places you can buy it locally by price.

Genius Scan + is integrated into many emailing and social media services making it easy to share your notes. The premium version costs money, however there is a free version available.

The premium version of the app pays for itself, although there is a free version available as well. For those curious, there are many apps similar to quickscan across all the various app stores

Zombie jelly shots Prep time: 20 minutes

Cook time: 24 hours (allowing freezing time) Difficulty: Planning These are simple to make but best when made in advance so that the jelly has time to set. You can usually pick up plastic shot glasses from pound shops or supermarkets although small plastic cups will do for a larger portion. Try and get some Halloween decorations that will make the shots even better, or even draw bats, cats, witches hats, spiders and other creepies with a black marker pen on to the cups.

Halloween is round the corner and pumpkins are in abundance - this is a perfect winter warmer; healthy and full of flavour. But there is another good reason to scoff pumpkin this time of year and that is to help ward off the flu. The rich orange colour of pumpkin flesh means it is full of beta-carotene, an antioxidant which the body turns into vitamin A, boosting the immune system.

If scooping out a pumpkin seems like too much hassle you could buy an autumnal soup of your choice, (even Heinz Tomato soup would do nicely) and throw in the rice for the desired effect.

‘Witches toenail’ pumpkin soup Serves:

Ingredients

Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 1 hour Difficulty: Ingredients > 250g pumpkin flesh > 1 onion > 500ml skimmed milk > 2 carrots > pinch of cinnamon > salt and pepper, to taste > handful of uncooked rice (the toenails!)

The shots are easy to prepare, but remember to not add the vodka until the jelly has cooled down, otherwise it will not set up and will remain watery. Also if vodka is added to boiling water the alcohol will evaporate.

> Haribo-style gum worms (the longer the better) for decoration plus other creatures if you can find them that can be placed in the drink before it sets. Leaving the gummy worm hanging over the edge of the small shot cup will give the drink an even more creepy appearance suitable for Halloween. > Instant Jelly-cubes are best but crystals are fine if you can’t get cubes. There are lots of flavours available; orange, lime and raspberry make a colourful Halloween palate. > Vodka, any brand

- make each packet of jelly in a bowl or jug according to packet instructions. Allow the jelly to stand and cool until it has reached room temperature. - assemble the cups onto a tray or plate ready for the jellies to be stored in the fridge. Add vodka to taste (not too much or the alcohol will also prevent the shot from setting) to the jelly and stir, pour the finished product into the cups. This is the point to add the worm climbing out of the cup. - place in the fridge to set, they can remain here until needed. The possibilities are endless as to how to dress these with a spooky theme - if you did manage to find bug sweets or similar, add one to each cup so the sweet is inside the jelly (once the jelly has reached room temperature). Tinned lychees are also very effective for eyballs stuffed with a blueberry! These little shots are fun but do contain alcohol and should be served with care - friends may tend to have more than they would if they were just drinking. Take caution when drinking alcohol - DO NOT DRIVE and look after each other.

Method - Scoop out the pumpkin flesh and roughly chop. Peel the onion and carrots and cut them into small slices. You now have a pumpkin shell that can be decorated to add to the festivities! - Place all veggies with the skimmed milk into a saucepan and a pinch of cinnamon. Bring to a simmer and cook on low until the pumpkin flesh is soft (this will take about half an hour). - Stir this mixture to make it smooth and continue on the heat, adding some water to desired consistency. Leave this for about another half an hour. Add salt and pepper. - When ready to serve, stir in the handful of uncooked dried rice - your guests will be repulsed when they come across the witches toenails!

Spooky Halloween punch (with floating hand!) Serves: Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 24 hours (allowing freezing time) Difficulty: Ingredients > carton of redgrape juice > carton of orange juice > chilled lemonade to taste > spirit of choice, ie Vodka, Bacardi, Gin Method - take a large bowl, combine the juices, refrigerate until chilled. - add chilled lemonade before serving. - finally add the frozen hand in the punch bowl for a horrifying effect! To make a frozen hand You need non latex gloves or disposable gloves that can be bought from the chemist or supermarket. Wash the glove and fill with water. Seal the glove with rubber band and freeze until hard. It takes about 24 hours. Dip the frozen hand in warm water and peel off the glove.

Gravity Hill, Dancers End Lane, Aylesbury This freaky place provides an optical illusion that makes you think that “down” is really “up”. If you would park your car at the “bottom” of the hill, leave it on neutral and take your feet of the brakes the car will go “up” instead of “down”. There are only 5 gravity hills in the UK. Some try to explain this phenomenon as a magnetic force pulling the car, but the truth is the optical illusion is simply caused by the layout of the area.

> 5. Cadaver Tomb, Ewelme A medieval tomb located in Saint Mary church. The tomb belongs to Alice de la Pole, grand-daughter of Geoffrey Chaucer. A cadaver tomb is a monument featuring an image or a sculpture of a decomposing corpse. Perfect for a Sunday trip.

Opportunities with Bucks Students’ Union Volunteering and Societies Coordinator Alice Dewsnap

Volunteering is not only doing something for free that benefits others but it is also a great way to get to know people, learn new things, gain experience in what interests you and get involved in something you care about.

There are a number of volunteering roles at Bucks SU so there’s bound to be something that interests you. These roles include, volunteering as a committee member for a sports team or society, becoming a union councillor, writing for the Bucks Student newspaper, going out in the community to volunteer, or working the events team. All of the hours you put into volunteering can be recorded with The Bucks Student log book, and once you’ve clocked up some hours, we’ll present you with a certificate for your hard work. We can also provide you with references, mentoring, training and support. If you like the sound of any of these opportunities, please email volunteering@bucks.ac.uk or visit us at the Students’ Union Office, ground floor, North block.

Community Volunteering and RAG calendar Since the beginning of term students have been nominating themselves to represent you as Student Rep for the year ahead. Following a week of online elections the results are in and your Student Reps have been selected, do you know where to go or who to contact with your feedback? Each and every course here at Bucks has an elected Student Representative who collects feedback from the class and passes this on to course level meetings every term, with academics and administrative staff in attendance. They need to hear your feedback on all aspects of your course: teaching and learning; assessment and feedback; organisation and management; the good, the bad and the ugly! With this information they can provide a credible voice and ensure that the University is committed to providing quality education and protecting the welfare of students.

You can find your Rep through our Rep Finder at bucksstudent.com/rep-finder. Here you can search by your course, School, or Department to find your elected representative. You can also check the details of a Rep whose name (or part of their name) you already know. These Reps have already made real change happen for your benefit on your courses, whether it’s getting more books in the library, helping to arrange trips that suit your needs, or campaigning for teaching quality on courses facing closure. Make sure that they are passing on your views and representing your best interests by making sure you know who your Rep is! Can’t see a Rep for your course? Some smaller courses do share Reps with other courses that attend the same modules with but you will also notice that we do still have some vacancies that we need Reps for, which are currently going without representation: No Rep, No Voice! Our aim this year is to breakdown the stereotype of Christians being abnormal and show that we don’t get high on incense or stand in a circle holding hands and singing BUT that we are a chilled, easy going group of people that encourage each other, look at our purpose in life and socialise, not just socialising with Christians but believe it or not with everyone else too! Bucks win a game of two halves

The first game of the season is always going to be a tough one. After only spending two weeks together and eight of the starting fifteen being first years, it was very new team. From the start Bucks looked very lack lustre and conceded an easy push over try. Hilton Mudraki slotted a penalty to make it 7-3. Two more easy tries for St Georges followed making the score 19-3 going into half time. After some strong words being exchanged at half time it was like a new team coming out. A well worked set play from the backs set up Tristan Coles in the corner to begin the fight back, making the score 19-8. St George’s then began to re-apply the pressure and some excellent defence on the Bucks line forced an error from St George’s released winger Blayne Underwood to kick through for Elliot Speed to score underneath the posts. With the conversion to follow making the score 19-15 St George’s. Speedster Tristan Coles scored a great solo try running from his own half to beat 5 defenders to run in under the posts, putting Bucks ahead for the first time in the game. St George’s just wouldn’t lie down though, and more pressure on the Bucks try line lead to a push over try taking the score to 24-22. 8 minutes to go and Hilton slots a penalty in front of the posts to give Bucks the lead once more, 24-25. 2 minutes to go and St George’s reply with a try in the corner following some poor refereeing decisions, St George’s miss the conversion, 29-25. Last play and with Bucks needing to score a try to win it, they had to go for bust. Dan Reilly making some strong carries through the defence, helped string together some phases. Putting Matt Gilbert in space to use some footwork and go in under the posts. Hilton converting leaving the final score at 29-32 to Bucks. A great second half performance and some strong efforts from the new faces.

> Q. How was last year’s team performance? Good, however the team suffered with injuries which reflected on results. > Q. Why should students join the Rugby team? We’re one of the biggest clubs at the Uni and we pride ourselves on inclusion which results in making friends for life! > Q. How often do you meet? We train Mondays and Fridays, and play matches on a Wednesday. We also have a social every Wednesday - so quite often. > Q. Do players need to provide their own kit? There is an option for stash to be bought, but playing kit is provided by the Uni. > Q. Do you have to pass any tests to join the team? No, all training sessions are open, and selection is based on commitment to the club and quality. > Q. What are the rugby initiations like? Everything the freshers will do, we have done ourselves so enjoy it but you are not forced to do anything you don’t want to. > Q. What are the socials like? Regular……….and awesome! > Q. What’s your funniest memory from last year? My funniest moment from last year was seeing current president Tom Willmington being handed off by a one armed fullback the size of Verne Troyer, it was absolutely hilarious! > Q. Fixtures and Results

> 1. Bucks Sport Coach Bursary We still have nearly £5,000 to support local coaches gain coaching qualifications in ANY sport. We can fund up to £150 for a level 1, £200 for level 2 and £250 for level 3. All they need to do in return is support the delivery of 6 weeks worth of coaching to 14-25 year olds. Talent Coaches Breakfast Club For just £10 level 3 or above (or those working towards) coaches can come along to Aylesbury on 30 November 2012 for a free breakfast and a 2-3 hour session on ‘What is a master talent coach anyway?’.

Delivered by Jamie Edwards, a leading practitioner in the field, this will be a fantastic session that shouldn’t be missed. In addition they will have the opportunity to network with other high level coaches from across the county. > 3. Community Coaches Breakfast Club Similar to the Talent Club, this is designed to give level 1 and 2 coaches a fantastic one-off opportunity to network with fellow coaches and explore with a highly experienced and qualified coach, ‘How to make the most of your Coaching’. For just £5, coaches not only get the above benefits, but again, a breakfast is included! This is also in Aylesbury and will be held on 5 December 2012.

Netball shoutout!

Just a little shout out to my first team netball girls, very impressed with our first game back to the season in Town v. Gown, great game, although so close and even though we had some girls out of position we only lost by 1 point. I call it a win for all the effort that was put in. Now lets show Portsmouth our A game on Wednesday and bring home a win... BUCKS FIRST!

The Bucks mens rugby 2nd team made a less than ideal first start to the season, with a 24-7 loss away to SOAS 1st team. A very rushed warm up and lack of preparation due to the difficulty of finding the ground meant that the heads weren’t in the game. Two early tries from the home side gave the Bucks boys a 12-0 deficit to claw back, but with some improved scrummaging, and lineouts, the BNU boys won a penalty try just before half time and with the conversion coming, narrowed the

gap to 12-7 at the break. The second half started strongly, with BNU setting up camp on their opponents 5 metre line, but with some sloppy ball skills and being unable to hold onto the ball in the contact situation, SOAS survived the onslaught, lead by President of the Students’ Union Ash Coles. The last 10 minutes of the game saw two break away tries, leaving the final score at 24-7. The end result left a lot to be desired and some areas to be worked

on, noticeably tackling and the breakdown. On a more positive note, performances as a whole were good, notably Ben Martin who won man of the match. Strong performances from fresher Max Sloane and second and third years Dan Cassidy and Kent Streak helped to suppress the attacking surges as well. Improvement is needed if this promising team, lead by captain Chris Beagle, is to win the league.

Buccaneers start the season strong The BNU Buccaneers are looking in great shape after an impressive recruitment drive with over 40+ new players joining the team this year and still growing. The team have been training hard for the past 7 weeks and will be going to the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s training camp at a local boarding school this weekend to finalise and polish their skills before the season opener against Kingston University on November 4. The match will be a competitive physical game but the Buccaneers are confident on getting their first win of the season in week one. BNU have announced the three captains as Danny Wallace, Klaus Rostowski and Chris Geldard Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not too late to join, play or to just help out within the team. The team are still looking for some heavy set guys that want to play American football. The team are full of guys from all walks of life, all ages and all sizes. We have ex-football guys, ex-rugby guys and guys who have played no sport before. The Buccaneers are the most diverse team at the university and have a place for everyone. Exciting times ahead for BNU Futsal! With the Futsal squad entering its first full season as a club at the University, It has had a great start with just over fifty freshers turning out over two weeks of trials to make it in to the squad for the season. This makes the returning students train that little bit harder to secure their place in the ever growing squad. Chairman and Coach Nathan Baker has been given a right selection headache as the level of players turning up at these trials have been great!

The squad will be cut down to twenty five where the squad will then prepare as they count down to their first fixture against a very experienced well organised Brighton team where Bucks, in their first ever fixture, lost 10-0 last season. With the influx of first years and positive signs in training BNU, Futsal are looking to get their season off to a flying start on Sunday 28 October in Brighton! UP THE BUCKS!

Sport Makers is nationally recognised programme and part of the London 2012 legacy. The aim is simple, to try and get more people taking part in sport. If you would like to get involved then all you need to do is attend a short, interactive workshop, for Bucks students only, claim your free adidas kit and get sport making. Any voluntary hours that you log can go towards your gold, silver and bronze awards and will look great on your cv too!
