Barack Obama has defeated his political counterpart Mitt Romney and secured his position in the White House for another four years. Obama won 332 electoral votes, 62 more votes than was necessary, as well as the popular vote. The months leading up to the US presidential election were eventful and full of controversy.

The first main incident of this electoral season was the “Bain Capital” controversy. Bain Capital is an investment firm, which Romney was at one point the CEO (amongst other titles). In 1999 Romney left Bain to deal with the Utah Winter Olympics. From 1999 to 2002 Bain essentially increased profits for their investors at the expense of laybacks and wage cuts for the middle class workers. However, Romney still remained named on official documents of Bain. The Obama campaign used this as a basis to wrongly accuse Romney for being against the working class.

The second major incident involves England, and was personally more funny than controversial. Romney, during his visit of the United Kingdom, criticised the security measures of the London 2012 Olympic games. The criticism was not taken warmly by neither the British public nor the government. It led to David Cameron giving this statement: “We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest most active bustling cities anywhere in the world. Of course it’s easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere [Utah]” continued on page 8

Being your Students’ Union President has been an amazing experience - I have gained so many additional skills and worked with some amazing people along the way. None of this would of been possible unless I had stood in the election. All jobs nowadays have a really competitive selection process with hundreds of applicants per role. Running in an election is probably the one time in your life when you have complete control over whether or not you get the job, as the person who works the

Hi guys and happy almost-Christmas time! Hopefully you aren’t too stressed with assessments and, if you’re a third year like me, dissertations. It’s a lot of stress to deal with. Feel free to talk to the Students’ Union, lecturers and other classmates. Everyone is in the same boat, so don’t suffer in silence, and don’t be afraid to voice your opinions. By the time this issue would have gone out, most of the programme committees will have happened. These happen twice a year per department and are a great way for Student Reps to give feedback on the positives and input on how the negative things can be improved. If you want something changed, then do it! Raise it as an issue and chat to your student or senior rep about it - they will be able to do something. Lastly, well done to those who did Jailbreak, Movember, helped for Children in Need and sold poppies for Remembrance Day. Kudos to you, and hopefully you raised a lot of money for charity. Until then, see you in the next edition where I may or may not be dressed as an elf!

Each year Bucks Students’ Union sends out 3,000 copies of the Community Guide to help all our new students settle in, to give them help and guidance, whilst also encouraging them to respect their neighbours and the Wycombe community in general. This year, we also distributed a survey alongside the Community Guide to Wycombe residents to gather feedback on how students are viewed within the community. Bucks Students’ Union is aware that often noise levels can be a source of tension between students and residents and therefore the Union is keen to encourage students to keep noise to a minimum when leaving the Venue after nights out. In order to combat this, Bucks Students’ Union continues to promote the SSHH campaign amongst its student

population. The survey asked residents to rate the impact of students on the community. The survey received a signiﬁcant number of positive comments from residents, a few of which can be seen below:

“Students bring some life into what is otherwise a very dull town! I’m sure those running their businesses locally must beneﬁt from the inﬂux too”

One resident in particular sent a very complimentary letter about a group of students who live next door to her on Hughenden Road. This resident revealed that they had experienced negative behaviour from students in the past but that this year she has found the students living next to her “a delight”. She advised that this group of students set a real example to others but keeping noise levels to a minimum and by ensuring

Demo2012

The Student Demonstration is today Wednesday 21 November, however, with scenes from the 2010 demo still on many people’s minds, is it the way forward? With many students angry about higher tuition fees and even higher levels of youth unemployment, a demo does seem a very good thing to do. Peacefully marching with other universities over an issue that affects every student and, potentially, every man, woman and child in British society. After all, we are the professionals of the future.

However, scenes from the 2010 student demo which saw catastrophic damage to the streets of London will no doubt make students not want to go. Whilst most of the violence and rioting were done by political organisations and non student groups, students don’t want to go to a place where they may be tarred with the same brush, or even worse, have the same scenes happen again. The Students’ Union have promised this won’t happen. And I believe them. No doubt security will be upped, and

American Election 2012 continued from front page The third major incident is so controversial it could have an entire edition of the newspaper devoted to it. During his campaign in the middle of June, Obama gave a speech in Virginia where he gave the following statement: “If you’ve got a business - you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” Out of context this statement is very misleading. It paints a false image of Obama as a politician who credits the development of a business to the government rather than the American people. In the speech, Obama was making the point that business needs public infrastructure to grow. Regardless, the Romney Camp isolated the above part of the speech and used it in their political advertisements. The fourth and ﬁnal major highlight of this election season were the three Presidential

debates and Vice Presidential debate. The Presidential debates covered all of the expected topics. What was unexpected were the outcomes of the debates. The first debate was the most surprising with Romney considered in all of the major polls as the clear winner. The second debate was a closer contest with the polls reflecting both candidates to be equally strong. The final debate was when President Obama ostensibly got the upper hand and was considered by the populist to be the clear winner. Overall it was a very lively election season full of humor and dispute. It is important to keep in mind that there were many other events which probably skewed the results of the election, including the current government’s response to Hurricane Sandy. Regardless of where you stand politically, the end result is still the same: we have four more years of Obama.

Shuffler

with the songs. It’s song based album, got some funky grooves on it, loads of different inﬂuences from all of us really. It’s live playing, there’s no machines on it, it’s all done. Real drums, real bass, real guitar. It’s all organically played and live.

Shuffler, who performed at the Students’ Union recently, are set for big things. With three members of Jamiroquai; Derek McKenzie, Rob Harris and Paul Turner as well as new vocalist Dan Pearce, they definitely know what they are talking about. We sent Marcin Majewski from the Bucks Student Newsgroup along to interview them:

“pop music which is such a narrow thing” > How did you guys become Shuffler? In terms of different experience and music background? Rob Harris (guitar): Dan (Daniel Pearce, Shuffler vocalist) Paul, Derek and myself have been playing in Jamiroquai for a long time, we’re still playing. We did residency in Roni Scott’s in London (Roni Scott’s Jazz Club) and that’s how we met Daniel, who is the singer and percussionist on the gig and we started doing a few gigs separately together. We started doing a record and we’ve just finished the album. We’re very pleased with it and we hope to have it out soon. > Would you tell us more/reveal few secrets about upcoming release? We’ve been working on it over the past year and a half to two years. It took so long because we’ve been busy doing the other projects. We’re really happy

> You guys are really into Prince. Prince yeah, we all love Prince. Bands like The Police, John Mayall, even things like Sam Cooke, old school songs, definitely Chic, some David Bovie, things like Nikka Costa. All kinds of things. > Seems like you guys do not limit yourselves to any kind of music which possibly inspire Shuffler? No, because nowadays the music industry is now, pop music which is such a narrow thing. We can do a rock album next, I’m not saying we are going to, because we’ve got those influences within all of us. Sometimes we might start doing things and it ended up in another way, which opens to all of our influences and not trying to fit a pigeonhole within just one style inevitably, because the way we play together - the strongest - seems to come out which is based on groove and funkiness.

> People used to describe your music as funktastic. Yeah. We all have been heavily inﬂuenced by funk music, we all kind of sit on the groovy side of the things.

> You’re also into Led Zeppelin as well. Yeah. When I hear Led Zeppelin I hear rock, but also I hear funkiness in them. John Bonham – what amazingly heavy groove drummer he was! All of us were grooving up with that stuff, it’s just came out in the way we play.

> Their songs with likes of ‘Stairway To Heaven’ have well-developed structures that could easily divided into two separate songs I. Yes, yes absolutely! I mean - we tend to do that in live shows. We don’t have things too structured. We look at each other and do the next section. If something feels good we might carry on for playing a little bit longer. We do have a freedom to do that in this band, to do a little bit like that, it’s great.

> During the concert you announced your debut album which is about to release hopefully in December. Can we get some details? The Album is ready, we’re just getting artwork finished. We are looking at the different options for releasing, because the music industry is a very strange place. We’re trying to do it ourselves. I’ve learned that in this business you cannot rely on someone else sitting in the office, to do the job you want them to do. It so often happens in this industry, in the way it is. Sometimes the job just doesn’t get done. You need promotion to be done in certain way. It happens that money goes into that, but the promotion just doesn’t happen. We are trying to get people interested in it. We are a relatively new band. We haven’t done that many gigs for people that know who we are yet. Luckily we’ve got people all around the world who are interested in Jamiroquai. They know that we are doing this as well. Hopefully everyone gets to hear us as Shuffler.

> Daniel is kind of a fresh fella within The Shuffler. Does he participate in the creative process of your songs? The songs are written by all of us. Quite a few songs started just within just me and Daniel, then Derrick and Paul came in and contributed. Dan is a great songwriter, we wrote all the songs ourselves. He has loads of influence. > Prince influences come from Daniel? He loves Prince but then again Prince is one of my favourite guitar players. It comes out little bit of me as well. That’s the thing with Prince, when you listen to him he’s based around funk, but he plays whatever he likes. If he wants to do a smooth jazz sound he just does it. I think that’s great. This week marks my fourth month since coming to the UK. I’ve been through so much during these months. I feel like I’ve learnt a lot about the culture here, and yes, I’m happy here. I originate from Poland. It’s a relatively big country, about 40 million people. Modern Polish people have never gone through stages of acceptance. We have never had to face racism, because there was no one to address it to. To this day to meet someone with a different skin colour you need to go to one of biggest cities. Transgender is not accepted. Even subcultures are less diverse and provocative. But where does this come from? Until the 20th century Poland was like any other country - taboo, disease, deviation, torture, and death sentence. But regaining independence in 1918 started a chain of positive changes. Punishment for homosexuality was ofﬁcially abolished in 1932. Even before this gays and lesbians lived relatively well, a lot of people of homosexual orientation were deeply involved in cultural and artistic life. Few prominent enrolled with capital letters on the pages of Polish history. Throughout Interwar Period, Poland compared to other countries, was an oasis of tolerance and religious freedom. However, the timing of World War II changed everything. Homosexuality became one of Third Reich enemies. For being homosexual political repressions, imprisonment or even exile to concentration camp met more than 100,000 people. After the war, Poland fell under the strong inﬂuence of Stalinist Russia, and the worst of the economic and social enemy - communism. Homosexuality was described as evil, immoral and we were practically removed from social awareness. Authorities gathered materials against us. In one of the largest operations for two years citizen militia was collecting materials against over 10,000 gays and lesbians in order to blackmail them or force to cooperate with security services.

Most young people have the idea that Christianity is a boring and dull life with rules and obligations to follow, but the BLW Campus Ministry aims to change this idea by making you see that Christianity is the life of God at work in any human person. It’s a life which is free from defeat, sickness and disease, with joy abounding, living over and above any circumstances you may face. You are programmed by God’s Word and you can be successful in everything. As imaginary as this may sound, it’s actual reality.

Under strong censorship homosexuals were completely invisible in public life and previously neutral words got the pejorative overtones. The history of gay people was also converted; every thread of sexuality had been removed from their biographies. Few minority voices out there were misrepresenting, muted and quickly forgotten. It is the old truth that the unknown raises fear and hate. That is why homophobia inscribed in the social norm. After 89 years and the overthrow of communism, Poland was dominated by economic problems. Social issues were left in the shade. The first LGBT movement arose even before the change in the system but for many years failed to catch the attention of the public. Although we were ruled by a ‘liberal’ party in the 1990s nothing was done in our case. Enough of history How it is today in Poland? The LGBT movement is strong. In the past few years a lot of individuals have engaged in civil rights protests on both levels, local and national. Openly gay people emerged in public media. Gay websites and magazines were created. More and more is being written and said about the rights and equality. After the recent elections that Poland has had, there is now an openly gay deputy and transsexual person within one of the political parties (I was in shock when that happened!) But the Liberal party, which they are members, is too weak to be able to make a difference. The curse of communistic approaches reaches us there with full power. It does not matter which party is in charge, it is hard to change anything. The law doesn’t regulate homosexual laws. Firstly, we are still waiting for the enrichment of hate speech on ‘our’ terms. Insulting on the grounds of nationality, race, ethnicity or religion is punishable by law. Sexuality is not. Marriage is the only possible way to officially register a relationship between two people but it is only allowed to straight couples. This year, finally, we can expect the act of civil partnerships. Personally, I do not support this law, it does not regulate all the required issues and I’m sure it will be a tool against us when we will demand full equality in marriage: “You already have partnerships!” However, many people do not want to wait, they have enough problems with taxes, inheritance, or medical care of a partner. To add fuel to the fire is the Catholic Church, which in Poland (officially a Catholic country) has a very strong influence. Although the vast majority of homosexuals are declared as Roman Catholics, recent research also said that it is probable that 30% of priests are gay, the church hierarchy has a negative vote on the matter, even hate. Bucks Students’ Union Communications and Marketing Coordinator - High Wycombe Holly Webster > 1. What made you want to work at Bucks Students’ Union? I studied at Bucks and originally gained a nine-month internship as a Graphic Designer which led to a permanent job, and just over two years down the line I’m still here! Bucks Students’ Union appealed to me as it allowed me to get a job related to my degree and actually earn money (which was and still is unusual for most internships). Also the work that the Students’ Union does for students was relatable to me as I was a recent graduate. > 2. What are your aims for the Communications and Marketing department in the near future? Well unfortunately I am actually leaving Bucks, and will have left by the time this newspaper is published! * sad face * However the department will continue to produce great work and I hope the newspaper continues to grow! We also have some really effective videos being made by the department which will get the Students’ Union’s messages and campaigns across! > 3. How is the Union different to others? Where do you start…? The Big Deal of course, it’s our biggest selling point. There’s no other uni where you can get sports, socs, rec activities and entry to the bar all for free as well as being paid to be a student rep. I think being a relatively small Union is an advantage as well, as our friendly staff make the Union approachable for all students. Basically Bucks Students’ Union provides the fun stuff! > 4. Where did you study and what degree did you do? I studied here at Bucks and completed a degree in Graphic Arts. > 5. What were you like as a university student? I was pretty quiet in my first year but made up for it in my second and third year a bit too much. I was netball 1st team captain * shout out to Bucks Netball club * as well as a Student Ambassador and Student Rep. > 6. If you could give any advice to a student, what would it be? I would definitely say, get involved! Join a sport or soc as you’ll automatically get a group of friends and everyone loves friends! Actually turning up to lectures is always good advice and finally give yourself loads of time to do your dissertation. 12 hours a day in the library for two weeks is not fun, take it from me – however naps in there are cosy! I wish someone gave me this advice when I was a student! > 7. What film did you last watch? Taken 2, it wasn’t as good as Taken but still worth the watch! > 8. Where would your ideal place to go on holiday be? L.A - I’m hoping to go there next year. Sun, sand, sites and celebs, I’m so shallow! > 9. What’s your idea of the perfect night in/out? Probably getting dressed up, pre-drinks round someone’s (always the best part of the night for me) and then onto a night out somewhere with my old uni girls. Definitely somewhere out of Wycombe though!

This year will see the re-launch of RAG as a student led society. Most of you will have heard of RAG, you may have even fundraised for RAG but you still might not know what it is. So - what is it? RAG stands for Raise and Give, and is the part of the Students’ Union where all the fundraising happens! Any charitable fundraising that happens in the Students’ Union whether it be fundraising for our two nominated charities or for national fundraising campaigns like Children in Need or Comic Relief; this is all RAG! You’ll have seen us around at events such as Children in Need, Macmillan Coffee Morning and Boobie Nights where we raised an amazing total of £1000 for Breast Cancer Campaign! If you’re on a sports or society committee, as part of your accreditation you are required to fundraise for RAG. So far we’ve had some great participation from

Though you may have missed our annual Jailbreak event - a sponsored challenge to get as far away from Bucks as possible - there is still time to sign-up to the Hitch to Morocco or Croatia! The students of Uxbridge were brought to Thorpe Park to experience Halloween at one of Thorpe Parks Fright Nights. The students had a great time going on the rides and experiencing the Halloween mazes; although a few said the mazes weren’t exactly great...they were petrifying! The B3 Ideas Agency - your ideas in action! Have you got a great idea that would improve your experience at Bucks? Do you want the chance to win £100? Send your ideas to b3@bucks.ac.uk and you could soon see your idea in action, and score £100 too. In September Bucks launched the new B3 Ideas Agency. The agency is an ideas hub within the University and the project team are always on the lookout for creative and innovative suggestions that could improve our shared experience - the way we work, the services we offer or the environment that we share. Every idea that comes in is reviewed and the best ones are presented to the University Senior Management Team. Everyone who submits a suggestion will receive feedback from the project team about the idea, its feasibility and what will happen to take it forward. From then on you can be as involved as you like. You can let the project team promote the idea on your behalf, or you can join the discussions about how it is promoted and taken forward. The first review of ideas is due to take place alongside the Enterprise Festival, which is currently taking place. The best ideas will be announced on Friday 30 November, along with the winners of the £100 prize! B3 has already had some significant successes. The recent competition asking for suggestions as to what should be done with the Rose Garden was run through B3 and the response has been fantastic. With nearly 70 ideas submitted, from swimming pools to a classical amphitheatre, the future of the Rose Garden looks set to be exciting. Diwali 2012 Diwali, otherwise known as ‘the festival of light,’ is a five day Hindu and Indian celebration and to many is a celebration to Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and starts on 13 November. It is called this as many shops, houses and buildings are covered in small oil lamps called diyas and are said to help lead Lakshmi into their home. According to the BBC, the festival in Britain includes spring cleaning, exchanging gifts and having firework displays. Different countries celebrate Diwali in different ways including northern India which celebrates Rama, an incarnation of Vishnu, return from years of exile, as well as in Bengal which is associated with the goddess Kali. How did you celebrate Diwali?

National Student Survey: how did we score? So, how did Bucks New University score in the National Student Survey (NSS) and what is happening at the University as a result? The good news is that our student satisfaction score rose by 1% both for taught (Bucks only) and registered (Bucks plus partner colleges) students, to 75% and 76% respectively. This is the number of final-year students who ‘definitely agree’ or ‘mostly agree’ to the statement, ‘Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of the course’. This followed an increase of 5% from the year before, so we are going in the right direction! Many positive comments were received and here are some examples: > tutors are really good and give their heart and soul to teaching you > inspiring and charismatic lecturers > excellent links with industry > the course was well organised. You know when your deadlines are and when work is due in.

Jack Shea, a student at Berkshire College of Agriculture (BCA), won £1,000 in a prize draw for completing the NSS survey. Top scorers The three top-scoring Bucks departments were Primary Care & Public Health, Business & Management and Law. Primary Care & Public Health was the top scoring department, with a fantastic 100% NSS rating. Agnes Fanning, Head of Department, said: “All staff in the department are passionate about their subjects and want to ensure that those students on their programmes have the opportunity to share their experiences of their respective courses. “The one way to get this message across is by participating in the NSS. All staff constantly encouraged their students to participate, recognising that this survey is public knowledge and will impact on whether a student chooses this university over another.” Business & Management achieved a really good student satisfaction score of 87%. Department Manager Mohammad Ali said: “We have looked to create a closer student-to-tutor relationship. One way in which we have done this is by looking to foster a community by changing our teaching style from lecturing to coaching and mentoring and showing that we take a personal interest in each and every student. We have developed opportunities for students to work on real-life business projects in order to develop transferable skills.” Law scored 86%, which was even more pleasing as this was a 44% increase on the department’s 2011 score. Head of Department Simon Brown said: “New colleagues have added considerably to the student experience by supporting the Student Law Society and the Mooting Society. “Greater emphasis has been placed on careers development both in and out of class. Most of all, the law team, with its open door policy, continues to support and mentor students through their time at Bucks and after.” Journalism, Law, Music, Marketing, Cinematics & Photography and Media Studies made substantial improvements on their 2011 scores. Journalism achieved an impressive 33% increase in student satisfaction to reach 79%. New head of department Gary Merrill explained: “We refocused the course and gave the students what they needed in a well-packaged format with regular feedback between

students and lecturers. We delivered on what we said we were going to do. I kept in constant contact with students throughout the year to make sure they were learning as they should.” Congratulations are also in order for three courses which achieved the following extremely high scores: Accounting (100%), Finance (98%) and Dance (92%). Room for improvement The disappointing news is that our university is in the bottom five of the university league for taught, and the bottom ten for registered students. The sector-wide average is 85%. We clearly still have a significant amount of work to do in acting upon the messages which our students are giving us through these results. The results and student comments have been shared with all academic managers in both faculties at the University so that strengths can be shared and celebrated, and action plans drawn up to tackle the lowest-scoring areas and find solutions to help improve their performance. It is in everyone’s best interests to move up the league table and this is exactly what we have committed to do. You said…we did You said: “We want a better search in the libraries so we can find the texts we need quickly and easily” We introduced: LibrarySearch The Library Service at the University has introduced a Google-style all-in-one system for users. LibrarySearch is intuitive and allows students and visitors to search the Library’s electronic and physical resources, from books, to journals, articles and images, and manuscripts and videos, using a single search box. It was adopted at Bucks New University for the start of this term and staff and students are already seeing a difference. Catherine Williams, Acquisitions Librarian, said: “This is bringing resources together for the first time, meaning students can search for print or e-resources from a single search box. “This is bringing our search tool and what we can offer right up-to-date and making the process of searching for print and electronic resources much easier.” So long as users sign in, they can save a search history and manage references to check what they have done previously. They can create their own e-shelf of references, look for resources outside the library, useful

information about the library and rank the search results to see the most relevant to them. Students are seeing the benefits right away. Secondyear student Bryan Medina, studying BA (Hons) Music Management and Studio Production said: “It’s a very handy system. It is a much easier search engine to use and it is good to be able to access e-resources and databases from other publishing sites. It should prove very useful for my studies.” You said: “Postgraduates need a dedicated study room in The Gateway.“ We listened: Postgraduate students now have priority use of Room G3.07 in The Gateway. You said: “We want to connect with successful graduates” We did: Bucks New University is organising bespoke alumni events for past and present students, in response to requests from students. The next of these is at Harlequins Rugby Club in London, which is hosting a networking event and reunion on Friday 30 November for past and present students of sports and leisure programmes at Bucks New University. The event starts at 6pm and includes a drinks reception and buffet in the Players Lounge, with a ticket included to watch the Premiership game between Harlequins and Worcester Warriors, kicking off at 7.45pm. The event has been arranged between third-year BA (Hons) Sports Management and Rugby Studies students, the University’s Alumni Service and Harlequins Rugby Club. It is building on a relationship which saw the Aviva Premiership side’s player Ross Chisholm attend a charity question-and-answer session with figures including former England Rugby Union manager Dick Best earlier this year. A similar event was hosted in May by the Music and Events Management department with the Alumni Service. More than 100 Music and Live Events Management graduates and students went along to the iconic Gibson Guitar Studios in London. Department Manager Teresa Moore said: “The alumni event presented a great opportunity to meet again many of our graduates who are now pursing successful careers in the music industry. This was a new venture for us and we were pleased that the night went so well.”

American Election 2012 continued from front page The third major incident is so controversial it could have an entire edition of the newspaper devoted to it. During his campaign in the middle of June, Obama gave a speech in Virginia where he gave the following statement: “If you’ve got a business - you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” Out of context this statement is very misleading. It paints a false image of Obama as a politician who credits the development of a business to the government rather than the American people. In the speech, Obama was making the point that business needs public infrastructure to grow. Regardless, the Romney Camp isolated the above part of the speech and used it in their political advertisements. The fourth and final major highlight of this election season were the three Presidential

debates and Vice Presidential debate. The Presidential debates covered all of the expected topics. What was unexpected were the outcomes of the debates. The first debate was the most surprising with Romney considered in all of the major polls as the clear winner. The second debate was a closer contest with the polls reflecting both candidates to be equally strong. The final debate was when President Obama ostensibly got the upper hand and was considered by the populist to be the clear winner. Overall it was a very lively election season full of humor and dispute. It is important to keep in mind that there were many other events which probably skewed the results of the election, including the current government’s response to Hurricane Sandy. Regardless of where you stand politically, the end result is still the same: we have four more years of Obama.

How it all works The Electoral College. The national presidential election actually consists of a separate election in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia; in these 51 elections, the voters are really voting for ‘electors’ pledged to one of the tickets. These electors make up the ‘Electoral College.’ (In most cases, the names of the electors aren’t written on the ballot; instead the ballot lets voters choose among ‘Electors for’ each of the tickets, naming the presidential and vice-presidential candidates each slate of electors is pledged to.) Each state has the same number of electors as it has senators and representatives (there are two senators from each state, but the number of representatives depends on the state population in the most recent census). The District of Columbia, although it isn’t a state, also participates in presidential elections - it currently has three electors. The people in each state vote for electors in the ‘Electoral College’. In most of the states, and also in the District of Columbia, the election is winnertake-all; whichever ticket receives the most votes in that state (or in D.C.) gets all the

electors. (The only exceptions are Maine and Nebraska. In these states, just two of the electors are chosen in a winner-take-all fashion from the entire state. The remaining electors are determined by the winner in each congressional district, with each district voting for one elector.) The ‘Electoral College’ votes for the President. The ‘Electoral College’ then votes for President and for Vice-President, with each elector casting one vote; these votes are called electoral votes. Each elector is pledged to vote for particular candidates for President and Vice-President. In most elections, all the electors vote in accordance with the pledge they made; it is not clear what would happen in the unlikely event that a large number of electors violated their pledge and voted differently. Normally, one of the candidates for President receives a majority (more than half) of the electoral votes; that person is elected President. That candidate’s vice-presidential running mate will then also receive a majority of electoral votes (for Vice-President), and that person is elected Vice-President.

with the songs. It’s song based album, got some funky grooves on it, loads of different influences from all of us really. It’s live playing, there’s no machines on it, it’s all done. Real drums, real bass, real guitar. It’s all organically played and live.

“pop music which is such a narrow thing” > How did you guys become Shuffler? In terms of different experience and music background? Rob Harris (guitar): Dan (Daniel Pearce, Shuffler vocalist) Paul, Derek and myself have been playing in Jamiroquai for a long time, we’re still playing. We did residency in Roni Scott’s in London (Roni Scott’s Jazz Club) and that’s how we met Daniel, who is the singer and percussionist on the gig and we started doing a few gigs separately together. We started doing a record and we’ve just finished the album. We’re very pleased with it and we hope to have it out soon. > Would you tell us more/reveal few secrets about upcoming release? We’ve been working on it over the past year and a half to two years. It took so long because we’ve been busy doing the other projects. We’re really happy

> You guys are really into Prince. Prince yeah, we all love Prince. Bands like The Police, John Mayall, even things like Sam Cooke, old school songs, definitely Chic, some David Bovie, things like Nikka Costa. All kinds of things. > Seems like you guys do not limit yourselves to any kind of music which possibly inspire Shuffler? No, because nowadays the music industry is now, pop music which is such a narrow thing. We can do a rock album next, I’m not saying we are going to, because we’ve got those influences within all of us. Sometimes we might start doing things and it ended up in another way, which opens to all of our influences and not trying to fit a pigeonhole within just one style inevitably, because the way we play together - the strongest - seems to come out which is based on groove and funkiness.

> People used to describe your music as funktastic. Yeah. We all have been heavily influenced by funk music, we all kind of sit on the groovy side of the things. > You’re also into Led Zeppelin as well. Yeah. When I hear Led Zeppelin I hear rock, but also I hear funkiness in them. John Bonham – what amazingly heavy groove drummer he was! All of us were grooving up with that stuff, it’s just came out in the way we play. > Their songs with likes of ‘Stairway To Heaven’ have well-developed structures that could easily divided into two separate songs I. Yes, yes absolutely! I mean - we tend to do that in live shows. We don’t have things too structured. We look at each other and do the next section. If something feels good we might carry on for playing a little bit longer. We do have a freedom to do that in this band, to do a little bit like that, it’s great. > Daniel is kind of a fresh fella within The Shuffler. Does he participate in the creative process of your songs? The songs are written by all of us. Quite a few songs started just within just me and Daniel, then Derrick and Paul came in and contributed. Dan is a great songwriter, we wrote all the songs ourselves. He has loads of influence. > Prince influences come from Daniel? He loves Prince but then again Prince is one of my favourite guitar players. It comes out little bit of me as well. That’s the thing with Prince, when you listen to him he’s based around funk, but he plays whatever he likes. If he wants to do a smooth jazz sound he just does it. I think that’s great. We are in the age we want

to do that kind of thing as well. > Prince is incredible live! He’s an absolute masterclass in performance and just delivery.

“the music industry is a very strange place.” > During the concert you announced your debut album which is about to release hopefully in December. Can we get some details? The Album is ready, we’re just getting artwork finished. We are looking at the different options for releasing, because the music industry is a very strange place. We’re trying to do it ourselves. I’ve learned that in this business you cannot rely on someone else sitting in the office, to do the job you want them to do. It so often happens in this industry, in the way it is. Sometimes the job just doesn’t get done. You need promotion to be done in certain way. It happens that money goes into that, but the promotion just doesn’t happen. We are trying to get people interested in it. We are a relatively new band. We haven’t done that many gigs for people that know who we are yet. Luckily we’ve got people all around the world who are interested in Jamiroquai. They know that we are doing this as well. Hopefully everyone gets to hear us as Shuffler. By: Marcin Majewski

Rocking out: Catfish & the Bottlemen

MC9 Music Presents “MC9 Music presents…” provided a night of varied genres: rap, RnB, indie and funk. Although this may have seemed to be a rather eclectic mix for a Thursday night at the Students’ Union, I can honestly say I have never seen such a brilliant, intimate concert before. J. Denny, a rapper signed to Bucks New University’s record label MC9 Music, kicked off the night bringing out various other student artists to showcase their talents. Jasmine Bourner was a particular highlight with an Alicia Keys style voice. The second act, Catfish and the Bottlemen from North Wales, were a typical 4-piece indie band. Their sound was reminiscent of the Rascals – full of guitar riffs and young musician’s arrogance. The lead singer, Van McCann, really helped to get this band over with the crowd, cracking jokes and interacting. The headline act, Shuffler, a 4-piece which included Dizzee Rascal’s live show vocalist, Daniel Pearce were up next. This group fused funk, soul and hints of rock to perfection. Shuffler really knew how to get the crowd going and people really livened up when they hit the stage. They played a good mix of original material with covers including, Adele’s ‘Rumour Has It’ blended with LMFAO’s ‘Sexy And I Know It’, ‘Moves Like Jagger’, ‘Superstition’ and my personal favourite of the night ‘Use Somebody’, which nearly moved me to tears. Overall I would say this night has made me more willing to go and encourage others to see the live music nights on offer at the Students’ Union. By: Becci Hailey

Folk Concert for Pepper Foundation On Tuesday 6 November I had the privilege of attending a folk concert put on by six of the University’s finest; Lars Mosesson, Egle Dagilyte, Martin Foley, Phil, Jennie and Mike Liebenberg, and Roland Scales. The concert was nearly three hours long and raised over £85 for the Pepper foundation. The concert was enjoyable from start to finish and evoked a wide range of emotions from the audience. At times the audience playfully flayed their hands around trying to keep up with the hand gestures that accompanied a Lithuanian folk song; while at other times the gentle picking of the guitar strings left the audience reflecting upon the solemn themes of brotherhood and unity.

The audience were also treated to a variety of folk instruments. This includes the accordion, bagpipe, and the hurdy-gurdy; all of which were played by Roland Scales. Overall, the concert was a fantastic exhibition of folk music at its finest. In many ways the concert was about more than the music. Seeing the interactions between the audience and the performers was the perfect example of the close knit community Bucks is privileged to have. I would strongly recommend By: taking the opportunity to attend Section Editor any and all future concerts Harmeet Singh Anand by this group.

Robbie Williams has bagged a chart double, with his new album ‘Take The Crown’, getting straight to the top spot while his latest single ‘Candy’ maintains its lead in the chart being No.1 for the second week running. ‘Take The Crown’ is Robbie’s tenth studio album and marks his return to music since re-joining Take That three years ago. Being produced by Jacknife Lee, the Irish producer who has worked with the likes of Bloc Party, U2 and R.E.M, the mature pop rock album is a welcome return to Robbie’s quirky and playful sound. With latest single ‘Candy’, being the singer’s first No.1 in nine years - also the fastest selling male artist single of the year so far - Robbie knows how to do a comeback right!

Lady Gaga showed her caring, charitable side as she donates $1 million to the Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy victims. The super storm which ravaged the Caribbean and the East coast of United States two weeks ago, killed 193 and left tens of thousands of people displaced in the New York City area. Hailing from the Big Apple, the famous singer was particularly moved by the widespread damage caused, spurring the huge gesture towards the recovery of her hometown.

Psy of Gangnam Style fame is the latest guest speaker for the Oxford Students’ Union. Oxford University is no stranger to visits from celebrities, with the University previously hosting talks from a random and peculiar range of stars and famous people such as Michael Jackson, The Dalai Lama, Katie Price, Kerry Katona, Russell Brand and Pamela Anderson. The viral music star talked about his hilariously funny video - currently most liked video ever on YouTube - and how he has dealt with his sudden worldwide stardom. He even led the Oxford Union students in a mass dance!

MTV EMA’s Onto other Psy-related news, the MTV European Music Awards took place on Sunday 11 November which saw the Korean chart sensation winning the Best Video award for Gangnam Style. However, the biggest winners at the Frankfurt event were Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber who both scooped up three awards. Taylor Swift won Best Female, Best Live and Best Look, while Justin went away with Best Male, Best Pop and Best World Stage. Other winners of the star-studded night were Carly Rae Jepsen for Best Song with ‘Call Me Maybe’, Nicki Minaj for Best Hip-Hop, David Guetta for Best Electronic and Linkin Park for Best Rock, while Lana Del Rey got Best Alternative. UK pop-band One Direction were another bigger winner walking away with three awards - Biggest Fans, Best New Act and Best UK and Ireland Act while Whitney Houston was given special tribute being awarded with a posthumous Global Icon award, accepted on her behalf by Alicia Keys.

Naughty Boy featuring Emeli Sande - Wonder ‘Wonder’ is Naughty Boy’s debut single, marking his first foray as an official solo artist. The Watford musician, real name Shahid Khan, is usually known as a producer and songwriter working with the likes of Wiley, Tinie Tempah, Leona Lewis, Professor Green and Chipmunk and has produced three top 10 hits, Chipmunk’s ‘Diamond Rings’, Wiley’s ‘Never Be Your Woman’ and this very song, all of which funnily enough feature Emeli Sande! Naughty Boy was also heavily involved in the production of Emeli’s successful debut album ‘Our Version Of Events’. ‘Wonder’ however is just another product of the great partnership between the two talented artists. As the lead single of Naughty Boy’s upcoming debut album ‘Hotel Cabana’,

‘Wonder’ is an upbeat song drawing influence from indie pop, R&B and soul, and is about being strong and happy with yourself. Featuring Emeli Sande, the song starts off with a cheerful piano intro before the Scottish soulstress sings “I can beat the night, I’m not afraid of thunder” over a heavy chant-like drum rhythm and hand claps. The song gains momentum as the chorus comes in when Emeli singing “Woah oh… we are full of wonder” over a powerful drum beat that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Florence and the Machine song. Emeli Sande sings more positive and encouraging lyrics through the whole song, with cheerful messages such as “If you’re heart turns blue…this song is for you and you are

full of wonder.” The song’s high part however is during the ridiculously catchy middle section of the song when Emeli tells us listeners “this light is contagious, go tell your neighbours…” in an almost Chinese whisper like manner, over a chirpy piano riff interspersed with Emeli’s soulful backing vocals. Overall, the joyful, optimistic song is like an audible can of happiness, being the perfect song to listen to when you’re feeling down. Wonder is already out and will appear on Emeli Sande’s re-released version of her ‘Our Version of Events’ album and will be on Naughty Boy’s ‘Hotel By: Cabana’ album next year. Stefan MIller

Genre 3 3 :: Chillwave Genre By: Sorcha Collister

Chillwave was invented by a blog called Hipster Runoff and was ‘uninvented’ by the many journalists declaring, “Chillwave is dead”. Hipster Runoff has a large following of American hipster teenage girls, (true story: teenage girls rule everything). Jon Pareles from the New York Times claims “It’s recession-era music: low-budget and danceable”.

Chillwave is an online genre and there is little evidence of it existing in the physical world. The best description therefore was taken from the website Urban Dictionary; “Chillwave generally features a fuzzy sound with a slow but steady pulse-beat that hearkens back to 1980’s pop culture; it may sound like the radio being played in the car during an episode of Miami Vice recorded on a crappy VHS tape and played back after said tape’s been melting in the attic for a few years.”

This pretty much means, they create music that is inoffensive to the point of slightly bland. Chillwave can sound as if it has originated from a generic pop track, but as the music smokes out of the speakers, it disperses around the room, creating an atmospheric smog layer hanging in the air and diffusing into ears. The definitive three; Washed Out, Neon Indian and Toro Y Moi were all in at the invention.

< Washed Out Laptop driven electropop. I hear lyrics but I am not drawn into listening to them, they are at best incidental. They are stripped back, there is no heavyhearted story telling, but that’s not what you’re paying for, or probably not paying for considering the blog culture that these bands thrive in. NME reviewed them with “album proper lacks bite” but I think they missed the concept (and the grammar) as he is, I believe, named Washed Out for a reason.

Toro Y Moi > Two albums through, and expecting a third in January, Toro Y Moi produce dreamy arrangements with summery beats. Toro Y Moi is the sound you hear when you haven’t plugged your headphones in properly and all the bass has gone missing. If you don’t like bass then this band, and Chillwave as a whole, will suit your ears. A Chillwave artist, without a fitting name, Toro Y Moi’s ‘Bull and Me’ doesn’t give the same impression as ‘Washed Out’.

< Neon Indian His first album ‘Psychic Charms’ includes the tracks ‘Terminally Chill’, ‘Deadbeat Summer’ ‘Mind, Drips’ which are so well named that they are perfect two word reviews of the tracks. The music pops out of your speakers but melts into your ears. To get an idea, listen to synth pop whilst repeatedly, quickly blocking your hearing in alternate ears (also described as ear wobbing).

Ghost Loft > A newer artist provides some evidence that Chillwave is not actually dead. Danny Choi creates minimal electro, which supports stronger vocals than the original three bands. It is perhaps only at the beginning stages of diffusion. A dimly lit hybrid of the XX and Jai Paul and an artist worth changing the battery in the smoke alarm for. With a little growth I believe it might detect truly gentle and seductive music for the hipster world to feast their triangles on.

Argo

“probably the best you’re going to see this year”

Following ‘Gone Baby Gone’ and critically acclaimed ‘The Town’, actor turned director Ben Affleck returns to star and direct ‘Argo’; based on a declassified true story about Tony Mendez. The US embassy is being overrun by Iranian revolutionaries. However, six US diplomats are able to escape and find refuge in the Canadian embassy. A CIA operative (Mendez) devises a plan by faking a film production, a Star Wars knock-off named ‘Argo’ set in Iran, to rescue the six US diplomats by smuggling the Americans out as its production crew. Affleck is becoming one of Hollywood’s most sought after directors in the industry and shows this by being able to make the various tones of the film transition perfectly; between edge of your seat thriller to comic relief making it all look seamless. The supporting cast is probably the best you’re going to see this year with Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), John Argo (15) Released 7/11/12 (UK) Running time: 120 min

Just the nicest guys

This fortnight’s column is going to be dedicated to the the main storyline that’s just been wrapped up, which of course is Christian and Syed’s final storyline! I’ve always had a soft spot for this couple - as some of my nearest and dearest know! I’ve been fortunate enough to meet both the actors Johnny Partridge (Christian ClarkeMasood) and Marc Elliott (Syed ClarkeMasood) on multiple occasions. Having almost met the entire cast of EastEnders too, I can safely say that these are two of the nicest actors that you could ever meet. Both Johnny and Marc are exceptionally passionate about the storyline, they truly care what happens to their characters and they constantly take time out for fans and people who wish to discuss the storylines with them. As a fan of both the actors and storyline, I’m going to miss them and I wish both the actors all the luck for the future with whatever they may undertake! So, what’s been happening over the past few weeks? Well, as most of you know, they’ve had a tumultuous relationship over the past three to four years and sadly, both actors Johnny Partridge and Marc Elliott have decided to leave. EastEnders saw a piece of history on 16 October 2012, when characters Christian and Syed had a civil partnership. Their relationship had been on the rocks just days before when Syed admitted kissing Danny (Gary Lucy).

Despite knowing this, Christian still took his vows. Upon return from their honeymoon in Paris, Danny continued harassing Syed for the money that he owed him. Christian read a text from him and arranged to meet Danny in the gym, but it led to disastrous consequences as not only did Christian find out that Syed had apparently slept with Danny, but he also received a painful beating *sobs*. So it wasn’t just a kiss after all.. Events went from bad to worse when Amira (Syed’s ex-wife) returned after Christian and Syed’s split. Was she back for Syed? Oh no, Amira wanted Yasmin, her daughter. Settled in Birmingham with her new fiancée, Amira (Preeya Kalidas) believes that she can provide a better life for Yasmin and wants her back. Although both men are reluctant to hand over the beautiful daughter, that they’ve both come to deeply love, they also realise that the sorry states of their own lives is no fit environment to bring up a young girl, so sadly we say goodbye to Amira and Yasmin for the final time. This leaves a broken relationship that has already suffered its fair share of heartbreak and love. Connected by an intense love and a powerful history, Christian and Syed realise that they can’t stay apart – but with the trust between them broken, they also realise that whenever they’re happy and together, that’s when things start to go wrong. After Zainab and Lucy lock them in the derelict Argee Bargee, Syed repeats his vows to Christian, hoping to win him back. This doesn’t work, but they both sort out some of their more ‘physical’ desires instead.

Goodman (The Big Lebowski) Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine) and many more familiar faces all of which bring their A-game with no weak link. The film at times can seem unbelievable even if it is based on true story and can be summed up with the quote “this is the best bad idea we have” as to why they decide some of the choices that happen. Argo may embellish some of the facts making it a bit too much Hollywood and preposterous while it also unfairly glorifies the role of the CIA and minimised the role of the Canadian government. Affleck noted “because we say it’s based on a true story, rather than this is a true story, we’re allowed to take some dramatic license”. Argo does a great job in creating suspense, drama and humour making it hugely enjoyable. It may not be my favourite of Ben Affleck’s three features but he has been able to set such a high standard across them that I’m sure Argo will be getting a few Oscar nods come award season. A heartbroken Christian prepares to leave Walford for the final time, and Syed realises that above all, he’s in love with him, and they are better off together than being apart. In a rather poignant moment, Christian and Syed meet in the Square (Christian couldn’t leave without him after all) and they share a tender moment. Ironically, they meet in the same spot where they reunited almost 18 months to the day, but this time, they’re there with Syed’s family’s blessing. Saying their final goodbyes, Christian and Syed leave Albert Square hand in hand, rattling cans and all! Instead of leaving to Julia’s theme which most of you will recognise as the ‘extra bit of music before the credits start’, they leave to an up-tempo version of ‘Stand By Me’, by Ben E King, a song that’s stood the trials and triumphs of their relationship with them, and by far is more fitting. Minority Report in PL In the United Kingdom homosexuality is currently a ‘hot potato’. That subject is ubiquitous; in television, magazines and private discussions, to name a few. Catchphrases are placed even on buses. But do you ever wonder how it is outside of the British Isles? I originate from Poland. It’s a relatively big country, about 40 million people. Modern Polish people have never gone through stages of acceptance. We have never had to face racism, because there was no one to address it to. To this day to meet someone with a different skin colour you need to go to one of biggest cities. Transgender is not accepted. Even subcultures are less diverse and provocative. But where does this come from? Until the 20th century Poland was like any other country - taboo, disease, deviation, torture, and death sentence. But regaining independence in 1918 started a chain of positive changes. Punishment for homosexuality was officially abolished in 1932. Even before this gays and lesbians lived relatively well, a lot of people of homosexual orientation were deeply involved in cultural and artistic life. Few prominent enrolled with capital letters on the pages of Polish history. Throughout Interwar Period, Poland compared to other countries, was an oasis of tolerance and religious freedom. However, the timing of World War II changed everything. Homosexuality became one of Third Reich enemies. For being homosexual political repressions, imprisonment or even exile to concentration camp met more than 100,000 people. After the war, Poland fell under the strong influence of Stalinist Russia, and the worst of the economic and social enemy - communism. Homosexuality was described as evil, immoral and we were practically removed from social awareness. Authorities gathered materials against us. In one of the largest operations for two years citizen militia was collecting materials against over 10,000 gays and lesbians in order to blackmail them or force to cooperate with security services.

Under strong censorship homosexuals were completely invisible in public life and previously neutral words got the pejorative overtones. The history of gay people was also converted; every thread of sexuality had been removed from their biographies. Few minority voices out there were misrepresenting, muted and quickly forgotten. It is the old truth that the unknown raises fear and hate. That is why homophobia inscribed in the social norm. After 89 years and the overthrow of communism, Poland was dominated by economic problems. Social issues were left in the shade. The first LGBT movement arose even before the change in the system but for many years failed to catch the attention of the public. Although we were ruled by a ‘liberal’ party in the 1990s nothing was done in our case. Enough of history How it is today in Poland? The LGBT movement is strong. In the past few years a lot of individuals have engaged in civil rights protests on both levels, local and national. Openly gay people emerged in public media. Gay websites and magazines were created. More and more is being written and said about the rights and equality. After the recent elections that Poland has had, there is now an openly gay deputy and transsexual person within one of the political parties (I was in shock when that happened!) But the Liberal party, which they are members, is too weak to be able to make a difference. The curse of communistic approaches reaches us there with full power. It does not matter which party is in charge, it is hard to change anything. The law doesn’t regulate homosexual laws. Firstly, we are still waiting for the enrichment of hate speech on ‘our’ terms. Insulting on the grounds of nationality, race, ethnicity or religion is punishable by law. Sexuality is not. Marriage is the only possible way to officially register a relationship between two people but it is only allowed to straight couples. This year, finally, we can expect the act of civil partnerships. Personally, I do not support this law, it does not regulate all the required issues and I’m sure it will be a tool against us when we will demand full equality in marriage: “You already have partnerships!” However, many people do not want to wait, they have enough problems with taxes, inheritance, or medical care of a partner. To add fuel to the fire is the Catholic Church, which in Poland (officially a Catholic country) has a very strong influence. > 1. The sense of humour I’ve always loved watching British comedies. My dad and I used to watch Black Adder and Fawlty Towers together, and I religiously followed every episode of The Fast Show. And what about young people? In Polish schools homosexuality is not mentioned. Pedagogues and teachers are not properly prepared for this. The situation a few years ago goes much worse after extreme right-wing minister of education got into power. Great gay Poles only now are pulled out from the closet that communism put them in. But still you need to discover that on your own to find some authority. So how is life of a homosexual person already born into a democracy? You are born, you grow and go to primary school, where peers use words ‘gay’ or ‘fag’ parallel with the ‘idiot’ or ‘fool’ to insult someone. Teachers do not respond, it’s normal. At the age of about 13 years old you’re going to middle school for the next three years. It gets worse. Youth at the worst age closed under one roof... emotional confusion, aggression and complete lack of understanding for the others. You begin to realise your sexual orientation, but keep silent. Hatred and ostracism in this age hurts the most. If you are strong enough to look into the eyes of haters and do not give up you may be accepted in the group. However don’t

Luckily, our culture, and many others, are now strongly affected by English-speaking countries. So be the model of modern society and others will go after you. I may be wrong. Maybe it’s not so bad and I should look from another perspective and realise how much we have changed in the last few years. I never let myself to be insulted or discriminated. No unpleasant situations happened to me and I came out halfway through high-school. Once I got hit, but it was only strengthening. No matter which point of view we take, the problem still exists. We should fight to be treated like we deserve; normally. Maybe together we will live to see gender, race, sexuality and others become archaisms and there will be only one that left, human. I am a member of the BNU LGBT, which is a great society to be part of. The fact that a group exists like that is really surprising as there are almost no students groups like that in my country. We accept anyone and can help you if you feel like you can’t cope with your sexuality or want to support others. We meet every few weeks and have socials all the time as well as having Milk nights at the Students’ Union once a month which the LGBT openly support. International interview Vol.1: Poland Course: Games Development, Year: 2 > 1. How would you introduce your country to the people who never heard of it? Poland is located in central Europe with a population of over 38 million as well 312,000 square kilometres of land area. Besides that we have great landscapes, great cuisine and strong centuries-old tradition. Modern culture is similar to the UK but unfortunately is not as culturally and nationally diverse. > 2. How is student life in Poland? It’s not that much different to the life of a UK student. Polish students, like British, drink like fish. We love partying, going out to clubs. It seems that more students treat their studies seriously and when it comes to learning they are able to fully dedicate themselves to pass their exams. It may be caused by the fact that we (Poland) start studying a year later. > 3. Is studying in Poland different than studying in the UK? The university system is constructed much more differently. Lecturers are treated like total authority and are responsible only for lectures and exams. Workshops are guided usually by Masters or PhD students. More students end up studying before graduation, not because of their choice but because of failing the year. > 4. I’m guessing there’s one language that Polish people speak? Generally speaking that’s true, but there are a lot of regional dialects. It’s similar to the accents within Britain. Two Poles may not understand each other. Beside that we learn foreign languages since primary school. Well-educated people should be communicative in at least two. It usually would be English and another such as French, German, Russian etc. > 5. Which city you would personally recommend to visit in Poland? The best place to visit is definitely Cracow. For a long time it was the capital city. There are great monuments and night life. It’s very cultural. If you want to spend time actively it’s a wise idea to go to the mountains in the winter or to the North-East side in summer which has a lot of lakes. The Polish seaside may be also a good idea but is usually crowded. > 6. How about Polish cuisine? Polish cuisine have a lot of traditional recipes. As meals, they are quite fattening for some people, due to the use of our meat, milk products and baking which can enrich every dish with unique quality. > 7. As Bucks New Uni have loads of music related courses, how would you introduce BNU students to Polish musicians? History of Polish music is really great. Especially rock music which had strong political context in 80s and 90s. Nowadays pop seems to destroy that inheritance but the alternative stage stays strong. The few recognisable Polish artists in the UK are Leszek Możdzer, Riverside, Tides of Nebula, Behemoth or Vader but beside that it’s good to find some others like Hunter or Closterkeller. It’s quite easy to find English versions of their tracks. > 8. What would you say about Poland as a nation? The best thing is that it’s usually strongly divided society and we are able to unite in hard moments. Beside that we are a very welcoming nation.

There is no rainbow Poles love labels. After you come out in front of newly met people you immediately disappear. There will be gay/lesbian, not a person. Through that prism you won’t be treated the same. It’s easy to put all the people in the same drawer and slam it. No one cares that there is such a spectrum of characters and ideas, that a stereotypical gay person does not exist. Many employers will not be thrilled too. Discrimination is not permitted by law, but do not worry, there are always ways to dispose unwanted employees. So what is life generally like for Polish gay people? In large cities, it is okay. That’s the best word - not great, but not bad. LGBT activists are everywhere, organising cultural festivals, charity and political work. Two men or women holding each other’s hand probably cause some hostile shouts, but you wouldn’t be threatened by anyone. At least in the daylight. Gay clubs operate excellently; they are become much trendier with other members of the public too. Each city has its own Pride, the biggest one in Warsaw. They are not as colourful and uproarious as here, and the police are required to protect people from small aggressive groups. But what about the small towns and villages, where over half of the population live? The further East and smaller the town, the more rigid views are. For gay or lesbian there are two exits, escape or hide as much as possible. Social pressure is so strong that most middleaged gay people already have a well-arranged life, in a heterosexual relationship, usually with children but safe, that’s all that matters.

Coming out to parents is also hard. Only one out of ten families fully accept such a confession (I love my parents!). For half it will be troublesome. A large part will try to heal you, some will throw out of the house and break contact forever. Even if you are accepted, distant relatives will probably separate from you, somehow no one wants to have gay members in their family.

So last edition we showed you how to cope with stress from the outside, but what about keeping your internal machine, your body, happy and healthy during stressful times? Food is vital in helping you manage yourself and being able to cope. Don’t miss your meals, even if it is only one, it will have a negative impact on you later on in the day. There are many things you can stuff yourself with, but here are foods that are especially good for you to fight stress and directly help and/or prevent stress: > 1. Milk This thick white goodness is pretty much rich in nearly everything! It is high in antioxidants and vitamins B2 and B12. B vitamins especially help with stress as it destroys free radicals associated with stress. According to the National Dairy Council, milk is filled with nine essential nutrients that benefit our health. It also contains tryptophan which as it is metabolised is converted to mood-boosting serotonin. > 2. Black tea A study by University College of London shows that drinking black tea four times a day for six weeks lowered the stress hormone cortisol after a stressful event. Green tea is also a good option as it is packed with theanine which increases the brain’s output of relaxation-inducing alpha waves and reduces the output of tension-making beta waves. So switch your morning coffee for a nice brew! > 3. Greens Mother was right…all dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale and broccoli are huge power-houses of vitamins that help to replenish our bodies during stress. They are full of the stress-relieving B vitamins and broccoli especially contains folic acid which helps relieve stress, anxiety, panic and even depression. If you’re making a fancy meal, asparagus is a good option, high in folic acid which can help stabilise your mood as they help make serotonin. > 4. Fruit Blueberries, oranges, dried apricots, prunes and papaya are great antioxidants. Infact half a medium papaya carries nearly 75% more vitamin C than an orange and

prevents stress before it even happens. Any fruits and vegetables with orange or yellow pigments are generally regarded to contain vitamins A and C, and has nutrients which usually helps enhance mood. Blueberries are great at offering you a high fibre, low-calorie option with lots of vitamin C. Prunes are not very popular but these wrinkly fellas have the highest amount of antioxidant activity of any food when it is in your body. > 5. Nuts And yes, I mean food. Almonds, pistachios and walnuts are packed with vitamin B, E, magnesium and zinc which helps boost your immune system, especially when you’re stressed and your body is left vulnerable to attack from those lurking colds. Zinc fights stress while vitamin E is an antioxidant that destroys the free radicals related to stress and heart disease. Substitute those cakes and sweets for these nutritious snacks. > 6. Meat Moo and Cluck! Beef and turkey are good sources of meat to deal with stress. Beef has iron, B vitamins and zinc. Though beef sometimes gets a bad rap due to the fat content it’s a great option and very nutrient rich even compared to chicken. Get a lean cut portion of beef to reduce those unwanted fats. And our ever traditional Christmas bird is not just great for the festive season but good to be eaten anytime. It also contains the amino acid and tryptophan which triggers release of serotonin. This may be the reason why we all feel relaxed or even tired after eating our Christmas dinners, but it always leaves us calm and comfy. > 7. Fish Tuna. This oily fish is high in those stress-busting vitamins B6 and B12 and is also low in fat (if you don’t load it with mayo!). > 8. Quinoa. What’s that you say? Pronounced ‘keenwah’ originated from South America and is a family of rice and couscous. It is a complete plant protein source with high protein content, gluten-free and high in magnesium. Try it if you want a change from the conventional rice, its easy to cook and will keep you going when unhealthy options have failed you. > 9. Sleep butty. When your sleep pattern is all over the place and you can’t sleep when its bedtime, even counting sheep is failing you then take the advice of the Sleep Council. According to the Council, the ultimate sleep butty is a marmite, banana and lettuce sandwich. Banana and marmite contain natural sleep-inducing nutrients. So before you go to bed, grab a bite of sleepy goodness.

Or that their baby boy finishes reading lecture materials and settles down to watch the Parliamentary debates in the evening? Is it really the worst thing in the world to lie to your parents (shock horror!) and keep them in the dark about your real activities? Essentially, it all comes down to the seriousness of what really happened at the weekend. I mean is it really worth worrying your parents over whether you ate that slimy oatmeal for breakfast that they keep raving over or cold pizza left over from the night before? Probably not. If it’s something a little more serious, like you’ve been in hospital being treated for a broken ankle until the early hours of the morning, then maybe you should let them know. After all, maybe you’ll be cheeky and get a care package out of it!

NUS survey shows Student accommodation costs double in ten years

Overseas study visits Overseas study visits (OSVs) are a core part of most degrees. However, having recently been fortunate enough to spend four days in Poland, I realised just how much the students who couldn’t afford it were missing out. Students are expected to pay anything between £300 and £700 for an overseas study visit, depending on where they’re visiting. However, for a vast majority of students, it’s not a case of them not wanting to come, it’s a case of them not being able to

afford it, hence their education suffers. A discussion with my Head of Department sparked off an idea in my head; surely the price of an OSV should be included in the tuition fee? At least that way, the money is paid upfront and we can slowly pay it back. This also means that students aren’t missing out simply because of their economic situation. What’s your opinion? The average cost of a room in university owned accommodation in the UK doubled in just ten years, new figures from NUS show. The NUS/Unipol Accommodation Costs Survey, published today, reveals that the average weekly rent for a room in university owned accommodation in the UK increased by 97 per cent, from £59.17 in 2001/2 to £117.67 in 2011/12.

Society & Health Remma Akibo-Betts - DipHE Operating Department Practice Remma’s enthusiastic approach to her work as a Student Rep has made her stand out from the crowd this month. Remma has produced an excellent newsletter for her class mates and has distributed the Key Information Set data regarding her course to her classmates. This is a fantastic example of how Student Reps should be engaging with their peers and we would encourage all Student Reps to take a look at Remma’s work and use it as best practice. Student Reps should be actively seeking feedback from their classes and discussing how the course can improve for the better, this is a discussion Remma is well on the way to starting amongst her group and for this reason Remma is our Student Rep of the month.

Design, Media & Management Tom Carter and Rob Lloyd - Advertising: Creative Rob and Tom have been working with the Students’ Union not only to help support their immediate coursemates, but also to help with other Union campaigns and spread the news about our work as a representative body to the wider student body. By volunteering their time to the Union in this way, they are not only helping us out, but also building their portfolios up and clocking up volunteering hours that will undoubtedly boost their CVs. Rob and Tom really are making the most of the opportunities the Union has to offer them whilst having a positive impact on the experience of their coursemates and wider student body (and we hope they will continue to do so!).

Opportunities with Bucks Students’ Union Volunteering is not only doing something for free that benefits others but it is also a great way to get to know people, learn new things, gain experience in what interests you and get involved in something you care about. There are a number of volunteering roles at Bucks Students’ Union so there’s bound to be something that interests you. These roles include, volunteering as a committee member for a sports team or society, becoming a union councillor, writing for The Bucks Student newspaper, going out in the community to volunteer, or working with the events team. All the hours you put into volunteering can be recorded with a Bucks Students’ Union log book, and once you’ve clocked up some hours, we’ll present you with a certificate for your hard work. An exciting opportunity to work with young people ages 11-16 within the youth club and on outings. Two sessions a month that last for three hours. Gain a full CRB certificate and free training!

Coaches are needed all over Bucks for different sports! Gain experience, working with qualified coaches, once a week, with young people in High Wycombe. You could be offered paid work, and it’s a chance to network with local organisations!

Work in local schools, talking to children about the dangers of abuse and bullying. Learn vital presentation skills whilst working with the NSPCC, attend free training, and be entitled to expenses.

Jailbreak So how did they do it?

Jailbreak 2012 saw three teams fundraise and compete to try and get as far away from Bucks New University without any money in 48 hours. The event ran from 1012 November. Before the actual event there was a chance for the teams to fundraise at the Cops and Robbers Flirt! night on 9 November which saw Team Nik Nik raise £130.47, Team Into The Wild raise £38.67 and Team Rocket raise £63.13. So what everyone wants to know is, who won? The winner is…Team Into the Wild who, complete with animal onesies, managed to get to

Portugal using air miles, so well done them! Team Rocket were offered a return flight to Gambia at Gatwick Airport, but they couldn’t go due to not have the correct immunisations. Team Nik Nik managed to get to Derby. It was a credible effort for all those involved and any money raised will go to charity on behalf of RAG. “We started at 10am in High Wycombe and with a quick pick up at 10:30am we finally made it to Heathrow alive! After getting slammed by Virgin Atlantic and numerous other airlines in terminal 3 and 1 we decided a fully sponsored flight from an airline was out of the question! Swiss Air said the only free flights they do is air-miles, which is where this all began. By using air-miles and busking for money we were able to cover the cost of the flight and airport taxes. We had a choice between rainy Poland or sunny Portugal, as they had the lowest taxes. After a long afternoon of raising a huge sum of £18.41, we were finally in departures waiting for the 6.30pm flight to Lisbon! So after endless hours of waiting, sitting opposite the American face painting champions with medals to prove it, we made it onboard a rather empty TAP Portugal flight to Lisbon! While chatting up the stewardess to try and blag another ticket, and holding everyone up as a result, we arrived in Lisbon, Portugal, our final destination! We had an awesome day and night exploring the city as the winners of Jailbreak 2012!”

> Why should students join your sport? American football is the greatest team sport to ever been played. Everyone can use their best attributes to get a win, and every shape and size can play, especially heavy set guys (16 stone plus). > How often do you meet? Tuesdays at 7pm in N2.06. > How was last year’s club performance? We finished 4-4. We won 4 and lost 4. However, we managed to compete with the top few teams in the country and only lost by one score such as the Southampton game which finished 52-48.

> Do players need to provide their own kit? All kit is provided by the team. > Do you have to pass any tests to join the team? They will need to learn our tactics that we use before they go on the pitch. This gets taught on Tuesday lessons and on our online group. > What are the socials like? Our socials are great fun, with great dress-ups and a great bunch of guys. > What’s your funniest memory from your sport last year? One of our team members, playing on defence, was getting beaten by the other team play after play so decided he was going to spin his way around one of the guys on the next play. When the next play started no one tried to block him, which he didn’t notice, and span anyway. The guy with the ball then ran straight next to him as he was spinning like a ballerina..which was caught on camera for us all to watch the following Tuesday. > What is tour like? Tour is amazing and we usually take 20-25 boys. Most of the guys that have been would say it’s the best week of your lives..but what goes on tour stays on tour. > What’s your sport looking to achieve this year? We are aiming to reach the play-offs this year and aim for silverware. People can always join American football at any time of the year. There is no need to have any experience as none of us played before University. We could do with a few more 16 stone plus guys.
