AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND AWARDS WELCOME TO THE AWARDS
Since our inaugural awards evening back in November of 2018, there has been significant change to and advancement of our association. We re-branded to Licensing International at Licensing Expo in June and since that time we have launched a new website and re-invested in the educational, networking and benefits packages for our members. This year’s event has ended up slightly later than last year due to venue challenges and the time investment required to deliver this event to the industry. Before I go any further I would like to congratulate the original Wiggles on their induction into our Australian Licensing Hall of Fame. They have been ambassadors for our industry now for close to 30 years. Once again we received close to 200 entries this year in key categories including Retail, Product and Licensing. We wish all of the nominees good luck this evening and special thanks and appreciation goes to our kind and supportive sponsors. I would also like to personally thank our small but dedicated team for the many hours of work that has gone into bringing the evening to you all. The business of brands and licensing is currently experiencing significant change and re-alignment and as is always the case, this will create both challenges and real opportunity for organisations who embrace thinking outside the normal channels. We encourage you all to continue to invest in the business of licensing and to think about supporting initiatives which assist our industry to grow. We hope you enjoy the evening as a celebration of the year and we look forward to developing this event further in the years ahead. Tony Bugg | Licensing International Australia

AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND AWARDS THE AWARDS PROCESS
From mid-October through to early-November of 2019, Licensing International Australia set about compiling all award submissions received in late-September and early-October of 2019 so the judging panel of experts could narrow the submissions down to 6 nominees per award category. From here the judges picked one outright winner per award category. To be accepted as an award submission, the program, product or promotion must have involved one specific licensed property and must have been available at retail between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019. Entry into multiple categories was permitted. The property must also have been licensed from a third party and must have been locally developed in Australia & New Zealand. The retail awards were judged on overall support for licensed products and marketing support for licensed products as well as how the retailer has worked with licensors and licensees in implementing compelling marketing campaigns to promote the sale of licensed products. The product and licensing awards were judged on creativity, originality, innovation, marketplace acceptance in terms of placement, sellthrough or the achievement of other goals. The following were eligible for entry: • Licensors and Licensing agents • Licensees and manufacturers • Retailers who sell licensed product • Promotions that utilised licensed properties • Promotions that utilised licensed product • Locations or events that utilised licensed properties

ONCE UPON A TIME IN AUSTRALIA
Anthony receives his Order of Australia from the Governor of NSW Marie Bashir
The Wiggles were formed in 1991 by Anthony Field, Jeff Fatt, Murray Cook and Greg Page. It was a rare confluence of musical pedigree and early childhood education. Three of the original Wiggles, Anthony, Murray and Greg, have degrees in early childhood education from Sydney’s Macquarie University. This is a foundation stone of their success. With all that they create, The Wiggles see things from the perspective of a child. It is the basic tenet that informs their work. Their infectious songs are the driving force in their entertainment appeal to children and carers alike. They are a part of entertainment history having sold 17 TV Series, 8 million books, over 30 million CDs and DVDs, with 18 Gold, 13 Platinum and 3 Double platinum selling albums and 10 multi-platinum awards for their music and DVD sales.
TOURING Live touring has always been a strength of the group. In a peak year, they performed up to 500 shows in one year (many times with four shows in one day) and are one of the few groups to tour every state and territory each year in Australia. In 1998, the group first took their live show to arenas. This became an annual event and is The Wiggles Big Show! The Wiggles broke into the USA market once they appeared as a featured artist on Playhouse Disney, having been given the honour of composing and performing the theme song. The Wiggles became household names in the USA, regularly appearing on the TODAY show and performing in Rockefeller Place, performing three times in the live parade and broadcast of The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The Wiggles have performed in some of the world’s most iconic venues. From selling out 12 shows at Madison Square Garden Theatre in New York City, to the Fox Theatre in Detroit, The Hammersmith Apollo in London and the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles.
At the height of their touring schedule, The Wiggles would do three tours a year in the USA to a total of three quarters of a million fans per year in the USA alone.
AWARDS The Wiggles were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2011, alongside such artists as ACDC, The Bee Gees and INXS. The Wiggles have also been awarded 13 ARIA’s for the Best Children’s Album, the most for any artist in a single category. The City of New York officially honoured The Wiggles for outstanding service and support of the city following the work they did with firefighting families after the attacks of 9/11. The Wiggles were awarded the 2005 Australian Export of the Year. (The first entertainers to ever win the award). In 2006, the Australian Catholic University awarded The Wiggles “Doctor of the University” (Honoris Causa) for outstanding contribution to early childhood education. Macquarie University also awarded The Wiggles with Honorary doctorates. In 2010, the founding members of The Wiggles were made members of the Order of Australia for their services to the arts and to the community as a benefactor and supporter of a range of charities.
READ ALL ABOUT IT! Time Magazine said, “It’s the quality of course, that kids, parents and educators love. The Wiggles promote social behaviour urging children to engage with a world that is becoming increasingly virtual.” The New York Times said, “The Band that rocks the cradle!” and The New York Times Magazine said, “...a toddler supergroup!” Andrew Denton, presenting the ARIA Outstanding Achievement Award. “Their passion for what they do, their genuine affection for their fans, the enthusiasm of their stage shows and their determination…are hallmarks of greatness. They never fail to fill their young audience with joy”.

A NEW ERA
WIGGLE FANS While The Wiggles really are the “Fab Four of Fun for the Under Fives”, they have some “grown-ups” who have met The Wiggles and are self-proclaimed fans. Robert De Niro met The Wiggles and watched them perform at the famous Beacon Theatre in NYC. John Travolta is a loud and proud fan. Jerry Seinfeld met The Wiggles so many times that he joked that he had been one, “I was one of the original Wiggles you know, but my shirt wasn’t the right colour. I was the beige Wiggle!” Shaquille O’Neal loved The Wiggles so much that he had a special Shaq-sized red Wiggles shirt and asked to get up on stage with The Wiggles. As his manager said, “Shaq wants on!”. When asked about the advantages of being a celebrity, Oscar winning actor Cate Blanchett replied, “Well…..The Wiggles were sold out, but I was able to get two tickets!” Johnny Depp confessed to an Australian newspaper, “I still love The Wiggles and I’m proud to say that I am the first human being to give Tim Burton The Wiggles on DVD”. And finally, Coldplay’s Chris Martin should have the last word when he told Britain’s The Observer. “We played a few nights there (Madison Square Garden) that sold out really fast. So we were like, ok, we’re really the big boys. Then we got told that The Wiggles had sold it out for a week, playing three shows a day”

To say that the new Wiggles era is a success is to put it mildly. Anthony continues his role as the creative director and producer of all of their work and with Emma, Lachy and Simon, they remain the hardest working band in show business, doing 345 shows this calendar year! They are the biggest selling Australian artist for live shows this year. For their end of year Big Show tour, they sold 90,000 tickets in the first 24 hours alone! No other group is doing this level of business. Our first female Wiggle, Emma, has become a fan favourite! She has brought dance to the forefront of our productions and has changed the play patterns of our audience. With their own production facilities, each year, The Wiggles produce 26 x 11 minute TV episodes, two video specials, three albums and additional content for YouTube each year. These productions drive all of our business. Our YouTube Channel has experienced triple digit growth over the last year with subscribers well over half a million and watch time over 1.7 billion minutes, 935 million views. Through a combination of Apple, Google and Spotify, The Wiggles have had over 255 million streams, with the USA being the #1 territory and Japan #2, demonstrating the truly international appeal.
Anthony, Emma, Lachy and Simon continue the legacy of the last 28 years and with the 30th birthday in 2021, the best is yet to come.
