2023 TOY HOBBY & LICENSING FAIR FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome to the fourth edition of The Toy Universe Magazine. The Toy Universe debuted at the Toy Hobby & Licensing Fair Digital in March last year as a digital-only edition. It is an involved process when launching a new publication and it takes some time to get things in place and developing a readership base.
Now that things are slowly moving back towards a more normal way of life after the last few years, it is great that physical magazines can again be distributed at trade events where there is a targeted audience. We would like to thank all the companies who have been a part of the launch of The Toy Universe and featured in one or more of our magazines or on our website.
From Edition1 featuring Spin Master, to Edition 2 featuring Headstart and Edition 3 featuring Moose, there has been plenty happening across the industry. We have seen a definite shift towards sustainability and there are many examples of great work being done in this space including Headstart's Resoftables and Recyclings products and Mizzie The Kangaroo turning rubber toys into roads.
As the Official Media Partner for the 2023 Toy Hobby & Licensing Fair, I was recently speaking to the Executive Director at the Australian Toy Association, Alice Sanderson, about her recent trip to the Nuremberg Toy Fair in February. It is nice to see that things are starting to get back to a little more normality and it looked like a very positive showing from Australian Toy Industry at the show.
Alice was kind enough to provide some photos from the fair and a comment for this edition of The Toy Universe!
"The Nuremberg Fair is the largest trade fair in the world and a great way for many members to meet their suppliers, source new product and build distribution networks. It was great to be onsite at a trade fair again and to see many members travelling the halls or exhibiting. I hope it was a success not only for Moose, EDX and Headstart who exhibit in the Australian pavilion, but for all members who attended."
As always, thanks for reading The Toy Universe Magazine and we hope you enjoy the Toy Hobby & Licensing Fair this year and all the events and products on show.

WE CHAT TO BEN SAGE, GENERAL MANAGER AUSTRALIA AT MOOSE TOYS
Ben — it has been an exciting year for Moose — tell us what we can expect to see from the team at Melbourne Toy Fair this year?
It has! Magic Mixies continues to deliver globally, and we are super excited to share what is next for the brand at Toy Fair. Of course, I can’t give too much away but it is definitely a fantastic range lay out for second half.
Working closely with BBC studios, we also have some exciting news from everyone’s favourite heeler pup Bluey! Fans of the show will be thrilled with the new line up which includes a Hammerbarn Playset, Beach Cabin Playset, Beach Toys Range and Bluey’s Escape Convertible!
What is a key trend you think we will be seeing in 2023 within the Toy Industry?
It’s all about the experience, specifically the reveal! Across the board we are seeing more and more innovative and creative ways to add genuine play value to products which the consumer now expects.
A great example of this is Mama Surprise from Little Live Pets. Following its success, this year Little Live Pets is offering My Puppy’s Home where kids can build their puppy dream home, close the door, and wait for it to magically appear; plus, we have an exciting new plush innovation called Cookeez Makery — a true baking experience that turns a dough creation into a warm, scented, soft plush friend.
What is driving Moose’s success?
We have a goal to be the most innovative toy company in the world. Having this as a purpose gives us the ability to focus on driving innovation, both in house and with our partners around the globe, and we are seeing the results, most recently winning the Most Innovative Toy for Mama Surprise at London Toy Fair.
We have worked hard to diversify the categories in which we operate in. Over the past few years we have seen huge success in new categories including Action Figures with Treasure X and Goo Jitzu, Youth Electronics with Magic Mixes and of course Pre School with Bluey.
And finally, our culture is incredible! Our team continues to deliver the magic that Moose is known for and last year we were a certified Great Place to Work in all regions including Australia, something that we are all really proud of.
THE RIGHT TOYS MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT
Providing the right ingredients for healthy development from the start promotes better outcomes than trying to fix problems later says the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University.
Harvard’s researchers found that, ‘although developmental windows remain open for many years, trying to change behaviour or build new skills on a foundation of brain circuits that weren’t wired properly from the beginning requires more effort — both for individuals and society.’
Their research reveals that, ‘one skill begets another as children's brain develops from the bottom up. In essence, the development of gross and fine motor skills, coupled with basic cognitive skills, progressively pave the way for acquiring higher-level skills like the ability to focus and sustain attention, set goals, follow rules, solve problems, and control impulse.’
Artiwood’s Managing Director, Andrew McGregor, believes these findings highlight the importance of childhood play, and the toys that stimulate it. He says, “The right toys, introduced at the right time, incrementally promote, and reinforce developmental pathways. Equally, the right toys always make this progression as effortless and motivational as possible.”
Artiwood has been sourcing and supplying eco-friendly educational toys since 1999. It distributes premium brands like Bigjigs, New Classic Toys, Indigo Jamm, and I’m Toy. In the last five years it’s tripled in size and won multiple awards. Andrew attributes much of this success to an unrelenting focus on educational toys with a multifunctional design.
“For us multi-functional features are a no-brainer. They result in better play value, incremental learning opportunities and a longer active lifespan.”
He highlights the Kinderfeets Pikler Triple Climber Triangle as a classic example. “The Triangle, built from sturdy German beechwood, has three climbing surfaces: a rope net, foot pegs and rungs. Each offers an increasingly challenging play option. That is, each promotes one skill that begats the development of another — just as Harvard’s researchers have noted.”
Andrew says HEADU’s educational activity kits are another great example. “These beautifully illustrated, academically developed kits include plenty of Montessori inspired learning activities, puzzles, and games for stimulating curiosity from a young age.”
“Take the popular ‘Learn to Draw’. This kit includes ten puzzles. The illustration on each puzzle teaches a child to draw an animal. An enclosed drawing board and erasable marker then lets them practice drawing these animals. A single kit delivers more than 20 learning activities, while promoting increasingly advanced cognitive skills.”
Andrew concludes by acknowledging that Artiwood’s search for motivational toys is unrelenting. He says; “We travel the world every year seeking brands and products that reflect our philosophy. That is, quality toys, with enduring educational features, that are built to last. Most manufacturers never make the cut. However, those that do are always worth the effort.”

LIVING NATURE IS KEYCRAFT’S PREMIUM RANGE OF ANIMAL SOFT TOYS
Created in 1974, we take inspiration from animals all over the world to bring these realistic and lovable characters to life. Made with soft-touch fabrics and beautiful craftsmanship, they stand the test of time with their enduring quality and appeal. They’ve become treasured friends and memories for many families, charming children and adults throughout generations.
We’re proud that Living Nature helps children and adults alike learn more about the many wondrous animal species we share our planet with, igniting imaginations. Each plush toy in the primary range features a colourful hang tag with educational fun facts about the animal, such as its behaviour, food and habitat.
However to protect the animals we love, we also need to protect where they live, so we’re making our toys more sustainable by using recycled plastic fillings wherever we can. This comes from used plastic drinks bottles and food containers that might otherwise end up in a landfill or our oceans, meaning our choice of materials has a positive impact on our planet. Look out for the Naturli green leaf-shaped tag on your soft toy to see how many recycled plastic bottles we’ve used to make it and feel happy knowing you’ve gone with an ethical, sustainable and fun choice.

Stories from GG's Toy Box
KNITTING GRANNIES
The problem of counterfeit Bananas in Pyjamas products first arose when the ABC’s t-shirt licensee Acme Trading reported that knock-off Bananas in Pyjamas t-shirts were starting to turn up in markets around the country, then we began receiving reports of unlicensed costumes being rented out in fancy dress stores, then it was cakes and cake toppers in cake shops, and finally it was knitted Banana in Pyjamas toys appearing for sale in toy stores — the piracy of Bananas in Pyjamas in Australia was starting to become a problem and ABC Licensing was tasked to put a stop to it.
As the head of ABC Licensing at the time, I asked for help from the ABC legal department and between us we devised a 3-step plan to try to combat the infringement of the ABC’s copyright in Bananas in Pyjamas in order to protect both the brand and also the rights of the companies licensed by the ABC to create, manufacture and sell official Bananas in Pyjamas merchandise.
The first step was to identify any parties breaching the ABC’s copyright by the selling of unlicensed products and these people were sent a polite cease & desist letter which gave offending parties 30 days to stop their pirating activities and to sign an undertaking not to breach the ABC’s copyright in the future.
This letter was generally pretty successful in stopping trade mark offenders but in those instances where this failed to stop persons selling unlicensed Bananas in Pyjamas products, they were sent a follow-up not so polite cease and desist letter which advised that the ABC would be considering taking appropriate legal action against the offending party if they continued to sell unlicensed products.
And the third and final step was initiated for any party still selling unlicensed Bananas in Pyjamas products after two warnings which was to provide the details of the offending parties to the police and let the police do what they do — charge them, arrest them, take them to court and fine them for their illegal activities.
And this is when we came across, in my opinion, the most-evil doers of them all — the knitting grannies.
Quietly hidden away behind closed doors, the knitting grannies would be knitting, day and night, soft toy after soft toy, feeding the insatiable black market for Bananas in Pyjamas knitted toys.
These knitting grannies were salting away a small fortune in ill-gotten gains all the while pretending to be innocent sweet old ladies.
Rather than help my noble cause against these pirates, the ABC made the problem worse when ABC TV Publicity in its wisdom provided an actual knitting pattern for a Banana in Pyjamas knitted toy to Australia’s largest selling magazine, The Australian Women’s Weekly, to help promote the launch of the second Bananas in Pyjamas TV series.
And this was then compounded when ABC Books published the ABC for Kids Book of Knitted Toys which contained a pattern to knit a Banana in Pyjamas soft toy and of course this turned out to be a best seller.
It went from bad to worse for me when finally, horror of horrors, ABC Radio one morning at their Ultimo studios in Sydney conducted the first “ABC knit-in” during Margaret Throsby’s radio program whereby hundreds of knitting grannies were invited down to the ABC to ply their evil trade live on radio.
I appealed to the ABC’s Head of Legal that the knitting grannies must be stopped but she patiently explained to me that the ABC didn’t prosecute grandmothers knitting toys for their grandchildren and that the police were unlikely to be seen to be carting grannies off to jail any time soon just for knitting soft toys.
I became obsessed with putting a stop to the knitting grannies — it was a war of me versus the knitting grannie army but, other than having my trusty assistant Fatin at my side, I was very much alone in my fight to stop them.
Every time I tried to emphasize the seriousness of the scourge of the knitting grannies, I was howled down by my colleagues telling me to leave the nice old ladies alone and to let them knit their toys in peace.
I was beaten — the knitting grannies had won — I’d managed to stop the t-shirt pirates, the cake makers, the costume hirers but I couldn’t do anything to stop the knitting grannies.
So knit on Grannies, knit on and may you knit in hell.
