Typhoon in Philippines By Martin Spilimbergo and Sam Bromberg On Friday, November 8th, a devastating typhoon hit the Asian country of the Philippines. A typhoon is a tropical storm in the region of the Indian or western Pacific Oceans. It is similar to a hurricane. This storm was named the Haiyan and will certainly go down in history. The typhoon smashed against the unfortunate poor country and cut off a lot of electricity and communication. The storm affected the lives of 9.5 million people. A lot of Philippines were worried about severe casualties and damage. The towns and cities had to be evacuated. More

than 125,000 had to evacuate their homes. The wind reached up to 195 miles-per-hour. Jeff Masters, a formers hurricane meteorologist stated, “195mile-per-hour winds, there aren't too many buildings constructed that can withstand that kind of wind.” This typhoon is known as one of the most devastating typhoons of the year. The US has already started helping the small country of Philippines. The army is sending people there to help and give a hand. The typhoon affected the lives of 9.5 million people. Bullis is also giving a hand. On Monday the Bullis

community had a bake sale to raise money, and some 5th grade students are giving money raised from their amazing and successful entrepreneur fair.

Weather

By Khari Butler

Weather changes all around the world but in the United States the closer you come to the equator the hotter it gets. Places really low, like in valleys, have a colder climate. Earth is a special planet. It is called the Goldilocks planet because it is not too hot or too cold. Yet if coal, oil, or natural gas comes into the sky it puts

carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The layer of gas gets thicker which makes the earth warmer. The layer is like a shield trying to keep earth warmer and away from the cold universe, but it is causing problems all over the world. The temperature of the earth has gone up and even in the Arctic, ice is now melting. It is important to

know about climate change so you will know what kind of extreme changes might happen like hurricanes, tornadoes and thunderstorms.

New stuff in the world: PlayStation 4 By Ben Houston

The PS4 is said to have the best graphics for games!

For those of you that have a PS3, PS2, Xbox or Wii, keep your eyes out for the PS4. It has a screen on the controller! It’s like the Wii U but it has way better graphics. At $399.99, it is rated to be the best console out of the PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox and Wii. Watch out

for the brand new PS4. Also the PS4 has competition with the Xbox One. On the Xbox One you can Skype, go online, do Netflix, watch Live TV and message friends. Most people will find it hard to choose which console to get because of their awesome new fea-

tures.

Fifth Grade Entrepreneur Fair By Nathaniel Lombardo The Entrepreneur Fair was a great success! The fifth graders had to learn all about how to run a business. One thing they had to learn was the meaning of profit. They also got a $30 loan from Bullis, but had to pay back $32.50 because of interest. Fifth graders were only allowed to buy resources for their business with the $30. Their

grades would be lowered if they used any of their own money, since the loan was only for $30.00. Once students figure out how much they made, they are thinking about sending the money to help the people in the Philippines.

Lower School Millionaires By Julian Christensen

A Fall Evening in My Front Yard By Emily Rubenstein

In Lower School the goal of each student is to read a million words during the school year. Research proves that reading one million words a year can help you academically. The Lower School keeps track of your words by using a program called Accelerated Reader. When you finish a book you take an “AR” quiz. It does a 10 (5 for short books and 20 for very long books) multiple choice quiz. Once you have taken it, the program adds the number of words in the book to your word count. Each person reading one million words is not the REAL goal though. The main goal is for the whole Lower School to read one hundred million words! Last year the Lower School read one hundred million words and we were rewarded with a pizza and icecream sundae party! Following that, Bullis was in the Washington Post! Right now the Lower School already has some millionaires! So let’s READ, READ, READ to beat last year’s record and maybe get some ice-cream and pizza again!

As the purple fades from the flowers and the leaves turn to crisp orange, the birds snuggle up in their nests, hoping for fall to be over and winter to pass by. At doorsteps, the elegantly piled up leaves wash the sight of rotting brown pumpkins out of your eye. The fresh scent of fall mixed with the majestic pink clouds at early sunset Equals a beautiful fall evening.

Tanzania By Ella Rosoff Going to Tanzania in the continent of Africa is a great experience. In Tanzania you can take a safari where you can go into a crater and see animals like lions, monkeys, and flamingos, just to name a few. One hotel I recommend is 4

the Crater Lodge. The hotel is fancy with little huts that remind me of Smurfs. When you arrive, you might even get

welcomed by a song.

NHL Check-in By Sam Bromberg The NHL season is a month or so underway and it has been an exciting one. Superstars Alex Ovechkin has 14 goals (10-14-13) and Alex Steen with the same. Also in other news Steven Stamkos suffered a devastating tibia injury earlier this week and we send him our best. “The Capitals better keep bringing their game but I think we are coming,” quotes Aidan Bartenfelder from the middle school. The Caps are 10-8-1 and hoping for improvement. The best team right now is the Anaheim Ducks with a record of 15-4 and 31 points and

behind them the Avalanche with a 143 with 28 points record. For those who do not know, you get 2 points for a win, 1 for a OT loss and 0 for a regulation loss. The few people in the league leaders category are Tuukka Rask with the best save percentage and Minnesota's Josh Harding with 2 shutouts. The point leader is Sidney Crosby, but before he got injured, Steven Stamkos had the most goals. If you like hockey and video games, you should try NHL 14. NHL 14 is the video game for hockey. It has gigantic hits,

awesome celebrations, split the Defense and much more. This year NHL has introduced Live the Life Mode. You make your player, get him to the majors and work your way to becoming a legend. In this mode you also get get traded and get asked interview questions on any giving night. I sat down with 5th grader Joseph Shiller who plays the game and this is what he thought. “It’s an awesome game with the realistic features and feel like I'm watching a real highlight. I think NHL 15 with be even better.” All information from 10-15-13.

‘Free Birds’ Movie Review By Milenko Stojkovic Jake and his friend Reggie are both turkeys who steal a time machine and travel into the past to try to get turkeys off the Thanksgiving Day menu. The two main characters Jake and Reggie never give up. They encoun-

ter problem after problem which the producers of the movie knew would entertain people. It also has some funny moments that everyone will enjoy. I recommend this movie to both boys and girls ages 7-15. I give it two

thumbs up. ‘Free Birds’ totally brings the Thanksgiving spirit!
