April and May bring on the last push of the school year. Along with adding in recitals, performances, testing, finals, sports competitions, prom, and much more. Although all these events make wonderful memories, the down time, and just sitting around with family can be just as enjoyable and memorable. I love our days of no activities and just hanging around the house. It feels good to catch up and not be running from place to place all day. So, what does summer bring for your family? Hanging out at the lake? Road trip? Camping? Traveling abroad? Summer camp? Mission trip? I know in our family it is going to consist of a road trip to Michigan, a mission trip, summer camps, getting to see new babies in the family, and lots of great memories. No matter how you spend your time this summer, we want to hear all about it. Keep sending in those articles over the summer, and don’t forget to take lots of pictures!

As adults, we all have memories of our summers, often filled with freedom, joy and lots of random. What we probably don’t have are many concrete momentos from those years to look back upon and share with our families. I try to imagine what kinds of photos I would’ve taken or words I would’ve jotted down in logging my own summers as a child. What’s different today is that kids have so many tools literally in the palms of their hands that make logging memories a snap. A simple camera photo to a plethora of journalling apps can serve as the perfect tool for kids to preserve their precious memories in their own words, from

The sun is shining, the sky is clear and the weather is fantastic as summer is quickly approaching. I know when summer is coming because I get the feeling that I want to go outside and do something. It’s a great feeling! We hope you like this edition. I was surprised to read about video games being bought back in the Peace Buy Piece article on page 10. Wow! And I haven’t read Fault In Our Stars yet, but the feature about author John Green on page 16 has inspired me! This will also be my last Think Tank column as I’m going to be 19 soon and it’s time for me to pass the torch to another aspiring editor. It is bittersweet as I’m excited for my future but I am sad to be leaving The Bunk Room.

I will continue to work at my job at Leads On Demand and put all my money towards paying off my student loan, as well as interning at the Orlando Predators. It’s been an interesting time at the Predators as we have been going through an ownership change, our starting quarterback got hurt and we got blown out in a game. Things are starting to look up, so hopefully the ship can be righted and put back on track! I want to thank you all of you for writing all of the fantastic articles that make The Bunk Room possible. I’ve enjoyed reading every one of them. I will continue reading The Bunk Room and I look forward to the next issue! Continue writing and submitting more articles. So long and stay in touch with me at my blog: www.StartingAtThe17.com

I am like a dream That never goes away, A nightmare you didn’t know you had, Yet always haunts you. How can you know the cure without knowing the illness? A déjà vu of pain yet not knowing its pain. You are not really mad like you think you are, There was just something inside needing a release. It started as a little thing from the first fight you watched Then it began to grow. Fist fights Gunshots Exploding bombs Fed him little by little. Now he is not so small, It’s angry all the time. Every violent act you see will stay there. He is the little guy TV. Always tried to hide from your view, But yet he was always there. That martial arts fight, you just saw, was his lunch. The energy he gains, in you. Years of feeding, violent scenes never gone, Eventually it’s not just food. It’s power.

Once he is filled, there is needed room to let out. His fists need an area to impact. His fists are your fists, as his aggression is yours using this to let out a strong buildup. You don’t even understand why you hit that guy, because of a voice in your head? How can you help yourself

Our class spent a week in Louisiana for our end-of-theyear school trip. Eight of us left on Sunday at 5:50 a.m. (YAWN!), and drove for 13 ½ hours in two vehicles to get there. After arriving, we settled into two rooms-- Emily, Angel, Mia and I in one room and Thomas, Reggie Emery, and Elijah in another. After dinner we had a talk on how important it is to save coastal Louisiana. Then we had time for showers, card games with the boys in the community room and an hour of talking in our bunk beds. Quack-quack, quack-quack. Wednesday morning we were awak-

company I will go to. I will have to talk with my family and ballet teacher. I hope to go to one of these ballet companies: Bolshoi Ballet, America Ballet Theater, Vaganova School, Kansas City Ballet, Houston Ballet, ABT Texas or Royal Ballet. In that time I will take a night job if I need to. Now, my whole life is not just about ballet. I hope to get married to the love of my life and have four kids: girl, boy, boy, girl. I want them all to have brown hair like me. :) I will name them Samantha,

Andrew, Connor and Heather. I will dance while I am pregnant so my kids will be dancers. I will not force them to do ballet… I will let them follow their dreams like I did. After I have kids I still want to be a dancer, but I also want to be a ballet teacher and I will grow old with my family and my kids will be very successful. I will go away at 106 years old with my husband and be happy and successful. PS. At 14 now, Annika will be attending the Bolshoi Ballet Academy Summer Intensive for six weeks.

ened by my roommate’s strange alarm clock at 6:00. We dragged ourselves out of bed and started getting ready (some of us faster than others). After a big breakfast, our teacher Mrs. Alvarez sent us to get our backpacks and change into work clothes. We were going to be working at a plant farm replanting marsh-grass into cone-trainers (little cone-shaped plastic flower pots) with some college students we met at a community dinner the day before. By 8:15 we were loaded into the vans and on our way. At the farm we set to work. The college students took small plants out of the cone-trainers and cut them in half; then they were sent to our table where we put them in empty conetrainers and packed them with dirt. We had lunch there, and then What’s back to work. Your

The late afternoon was spent on fun things like climbing the tower where you can see five miles in every direction over the bayou and playing Black Jack and Monopoly. After dinner and more free time it was back to our rooms for showers and a makeover for me and Mia given by Emily and Angel. It was the first time I had ever really worn makeup. Finally it was time for bed--another long and busy day finished.

ception. But should losing weight really be the primary concern? Shouldn’t simply being healthy be the priority? The fact of the matter is, if you eat healthier, fresher foods, weight loss and good health will soon follow. In my experience, a large factor in the need for weight loss is the amount of processed foods like pasta, frozen dinners, and pre-made lunches in the typical American diet. It’s best to stick with whole, unprocessed foods. Obviously, you aren’t going to start up your own cereal company, and there will always be a soft spot in your heart for cheese ramen. You don’t need to cut out these foods altogether, but rather limit them to an occasional treat.

Merry Hadden’s Montessori School Brings New Life to Historic Public School

By Larissa Foxx 10, Mount Dora, FL Bunk Roomie Writer Montessori at Roseborough

Despite the fact that Roseborough Elementary closed its doors as a public elementary over 10 years ago, each morning dozens of students make their way to classrooms to learn since the school was renovated and reopened as “Montessori at Roseborough” under the guidance of Merry Hadden. Hadden comes to Mount Dora with a rich background in the field of childhood development with specialized training in India and Italy as well as a BA in psychology and business. Hadden founded Montessori N.E.S.T in 1983, located in Leesburg, FL, which settled in Mount Dora in 1994. In 2009 Hadden combined her passion for “green living” with “green schooling” and moved the school to its current location at the renovated Roseborough location. On a daily basis, Hadden makes sure that the staff is present and everything is running fine so that there aren’t any problems. She also checks with Mr. Mike, the school’s Operations Manager. “We do a safety check. I have to make sure the environment is prepared and safe. I meet with parents and chil-

dren regularly. I am always available to meet children.” Montessori at Roseborough is an AMI Recognized School, following the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori. Montessori schools started in 1907. Dr. Montessori was the first woman doctor in Italy and was also a scientist and philosopher. Dr. Montessori’s philosophy was based on the principle that all children naturally develop in stages, called planes of development. “The most challenging [part of my job] is helping people understand what Montessori is about. A lot of times people come here with not knowing it’s a great method because they come in with preconceived ideas and trying to help change a preconceived idea can be difficult.” The best part of Haden’s day is going into the classrooms and watching the children work. She says that seeing the work that the children do amazes her. “[I love] working with the children. And I love watching how the children develop and grow and mature. I love seeing what [they] learn and I love what I learn from [all of them]. Montessori is a very unique method of education. I love that my staff is all very happy – working with people who love their work. There is not one teacher here who doesn’t love working with Montessori. They truly love it and believe in it.” In 2010, Ms. Merry started the Adolescent Program for children ages 12 to 15. She came up with the idea since the school had the gym and extra space. “I think Montessori works better

! Roomies

for that age group.” Montessori Elementary goes through 6th grade and the school was losing all of our 6th graders because public middle school is 6th, 7th, and 8th grade but Montessori believes the 6th graders should be in elementary. It is important to have the older students in the classroom to act as role models for the younger students as well as give the younger students lessons. When Hadden isn’t at school she likes to garden and read. “I like to go to the farmer’s market and I go to Renninger’s [Antiques]. I’m always looking for special things for the classroom--real tools that are proportioned to the child’s size. Tools or real furniture or unique things that work---child’s size; we don’t use much plastic here.” The school also has an official mascot, Virgil. He is a 2 year old Mastiff

who comes to school with Hadden every day. He started coming to school because she wanted him to be used to being around people and children. The middle school named us the “Montessori Mastiffs.” Virgil also acts as security. “He would scare any strangers coming into the school!”
