We’d love your feedback! This is the first ever copy of BizCom and we value all feedback, please email us at hello@ thebusinessescommunity.com to let us know what you think :)

Do you love yourself? It’s funny what sort of emotions this question stirs up in us isn’t it? Self-doubt? Hesitation? A feeling of dread in the pit of our stomach perhaps? I truly believe we all have the fundamental right to love ourselves and that without it we cannot make our full impact in the world, ourselves and in those around us. For me getting to the point of loving myself (warts and all) was a long process but one that was well worth doing. It truly lifted a burden from my shoulders and allowed me to make (and continue to make) the changes that I needed to in my mind and body. As someone far wiser than me said, you need to love and make peace with where you are and who you are now before you can become who you want to be. And this is what I now do through my Health Coaching and Hypnotherapy. I help women love where they are now and where they are going, until they become who they want to be through support, accountability and a whole bag of knowledge, skills and tools. Louise’s Antenatal Classes Hi, I’m Louise. I have been a midwife for nearly 17 years. I set up my business ‘Louise’s Antenatal Classes’ 3 years ago. I deliver antenatal classes for first time parents and refresher classes for parents who already have children. The aim is to discuss the realities of having a baby but also build confidence in your ability to birth your baby and how your birth partner can help and support you. The most satisfying part about running my classes is seeing the transformation in couples that may have been frightened or nervous about the upcoming birth before the class, to feeling much more positive and confident about the process afterwards.

Pest Control In The Spring Now the sun is starting to come out we will start to see summer pests such as garden ants, flies and wasps. The key to treating any pest is R.E.D Restriction: Control the environment, keep areas clean, tidy and keep lids on food waste bins. Wash out food packaging before recycling. Exclusion: Keep them out. Shut doors and windows to food areas or install flyscreens to help stop ingress. Destruction: If flying and crawling insects get in then they need to be treated to prevent food contamination. Excalibur Auctions Ltd In 2016 Sarah Torode had been in the Auction Industry for several years working with her husband as a Model Railway and Toy Specialist for local auction companies. We’ve just celebrated our first anniversary here at Cositas and what a year its beenCositas owner, Emma, explains: I’ve loved every single second of it. I’ve lived in St Albans for 20 years and have raised my three children here, to live and work in our lovely city is such a pleasure! I chose the name Cositas with the help of my Chilean dad. Cositas means “little things” in Spanish-fitting to represent how important the small things are in life and what a difference they can make; from where to strategically place a vase to create a little bit of visual styling heaven, to little gestures you make to your family and friends. The fact that we chose it together means a lot to me. A year on and we’re still going strong and in the tough year that the high street has seen, I’m incredibly thankful! We’ve expanded and instead of just me teaching my modest three furniture painting workshops, there are now 8 other Cositas Creative Workshop Leaders who teach all sorts of things from Make A Neon Sign and Make A Lampshade, to Crochet and Make Your Own Terrarium to name just a few. The workshops have been incredibly popular and we’re now booking for hen parties, private parties and office parties with plans to put our Pop-Up Workshops 32-34 Holywell Hill St Albans AL1 1BZ www.cositas.co.uk 10 | BIZCOM

We sell a wide range of gifts as well as furniture, soft furnishings and lighting...our gifts include jewellery, artwork that is made especially for us and can be personalised with names and words of your choice, candles, picture frames, dressing table decor, there’s too much to list! If you haven’t made it down the hill to see us, please do. We’d love to show you around! And if you have managed to come in to the shop, supported us by telling your friends about us, buying online or just a like on social media, I thank you very much. Why the name? Thirty Nine 10 was born on the burning ashes of Zefino, my previous store that saw an unfortunate early death. The name stands for the postcode (3910) of my hometown, Tokaj, Hungary where the World famous Tokaji Aszu wines are made. My maternal grandfather was one of the founding fathers and later president of the Tokaj Wine Growers Council.

What is Thirty Nine 10, a wine shop, or a tasting room? A bit both. The wine shop stocks, without a doubt, the most exciting wines you can find in town and runs fun, relaxed private group tastings with sometimes Master of Wines, Master Sommeliers and winemakers joining us. I am honoured and proud to be able to work together with winemakers, like the Ceretto family from Piedmont, the only winemakers, to my knowledge, to own a Michelin 3 starred restaurant with Chef Enrico Crippa. Remy Gresser from Alsace, one of the oldest family run estate. The rising star of Bourgogne, David Duband, or the Duflouleur family, who supplied Napoleon with their Chambertin Grand Cru. Domaine Dujac - I even have in-store the Domaine de la Romanee Conti and Dujac co-owned Domaine Triennes project from Provence, but there is Madame Chirac’s favourite estate from Brouilly, Chateau de La Chaize on my shelves next 14 | BIZCOM

I create stylish outdoor spaces by offering a range of garden services. Based in St Albans, I work across Hertfordshire and Greater London. The restored courtroom at the Town Hall will become another popular feature for visitors to see.

Playing our part in St Albans I’m delighted our team of restoration experts are giving a new future to the wonderful local landmark that is the St Albans Town Hall. As someone who went to college in St Albans, I have long admired the building. This ambitious project is transforming the Grade II-listed facility into a glorious new museum and art gallery that will attract many thousands to the city.

St Albans is at the forefront of a trend that is seeing councils invest in restoring their heritage buildings to become the centre piece attraction for their region. Often they involve the augmentation of an existing use, which creates a new revenue stream or a significant change of use. Either way, the ability to breathe new life into one of the city’s most distinctive 18 | BIZCOM

buildings is a real joy for Willmott Dixon. Our track record of renewing Grade I and Grade II properties has one thing in common. Through the council’s vision and the skills of our people, we will add value to the local economy, whether through an increase in visitor numbers or providing space for new homes and businesses.

When opened this summer, the rejuvenated St Albans Town Hall will be a bright and pleasant place to visit and enjoy, as well as being a new destination in its own right for people coming from outside the city. As a Herts-based company with strong connections to St Albans, I am proud that Willmott Dixon is bringing this superb example of 19th century architecture into the 21st century. It’s great we can play our part in giving St Albans an exciting future and we look forward to continuing to do so for many years to come. Chris Tredget - Managing Director Northern Home Counties Willmott Dixon

What do Katy Perry, Will Smith, Oprah, Jim Carrey and Arnold Schwarzenegger have in common? Apart from being incredibly wealthy, famous and successful, they have all harnessed the power of visualisation and attribute their success to this powerful tool. Without realising it, we use the power of visualisation every day, through the use of our imagination. Imagination is the ability to create an idea, an outcome or a solution, but very often, we use our imagination to create what we don’t want, a problem or blocks and obstacles. I was first introduced to the art of visualsation when I was pregnant with my son nearly 14 years ago, when I read the book, The Gentle Birth Method, by Gowri Motha, where I spent weeks visualizing a natural positive birth experience, and that is exactly what I got, a pool birth with very little medical intervention. It wasn’t until I read The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne, and other personal development books that it was beginning to dawn on me how powerful visualisation could actually be. After giving birth to my daughter (number two) I knew I no longer wanted the 9-5 life. I started to dream about a different career that would feed my love of alternative therapies, whilst being flexible with my children. At this time, I happened to work very near to Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, where Who Wants To Be A Millionaire was filmed. I had always wanted to be a contestant. Back to visualisation mode, I could quite clearly picture myself sitting in front of Chris Tarrant, and I would often do this as I was driving past the studio on my way to work. I could clearly picture the scene in my minds 22 | BIZCOM

eye, and even feel the tension mount as I was climbing up the money tree. Fast forward a few months – my visualisation became a reality. I was there, sat in front of Chris Tarrant, and I went on to win £20,000! Bingo! it was proof for me that visualisation worked. Top athletes and sports professionals routinely use visualisation as part of sports psychology to “get into the zone”, so this is not a new concept – Visualisation works!

This may sound like a flukey story, but as I went on to create more and more similar experiences in my life, I began to realise that these were not coincidences but they were just that, experiences I deliberately created. Anyone can do this! I do not possess any magical powers, I’m not a psychic or a mystic (well maybe a little ) Anyone can do this, the problem is that most people give up on this process because they give it a go and give up because the results aren’t fast enough.

also be used as part of your daily routine to help your day run smoother (visualising parking spaces and short queues at the supermarket etc) as well as the biggies, the big goals, dreams and aspirations. Try it for yourself, what will you be visualising tonight?

My tips for successful visualisation 1. Get super clear on what you want. Desire is the rocket fuel for successful manifestations.

2. Picture the goal clearly in your mind. 3. Think about how your vision makes your feel (excited, joyful, in anticipation) Feelings supercharge your vision. Allow yourself to feel those feelings when visualising your goal. 4. Visualise your goal daily, morning and evening, but let go of feelings of impatience and frustration – these negative feelings will slow down this process.

5. Consider making a Vision Board. Vision Boards were made famous in The Secret, and many celebrities swear by them. For those who find it hard to visualise, this is the perfect tool.

6. Let go and let the Universe do her thing – in the meantime, have fun and focus on living a life you love. There are many books that explore the topic of visualisation in further detail, my favourite is Creative Visualisation by Shakti Gawain. Visualisation can be used in all aspects of your life, it should be used in a fun, light hearted manner. Visualisation can

After 24 years of working in London and the surrounding areas for major Blue Chip Companies as a Personal Assistant, I decided to venture out and launch my own business and I haven’t looked back!

Sorted provides its clients with all their secretarial, administrative and organisational needs, allowing them to have the time to run their successful businesses by concentrating on the important things rather than organising the paperwork. We take pride in everything we do as no task is too small. We are here to make a difference to your business and your time. If you would like to know more or have an enquiry, please do get in touch either via email at cheryl@sortedlimited.com or visit our web page www.sortedlimited.com.

Create, Connect & Collaborate Imagine the scene, Its’ Tuesday morning, you have a deadline to deliver by 3pm. You settle down with a reassuring mug of coffee, on the corner of the breakfast bar and you just have a couple more elements to finish before you send the project across. Switch on the laptop and bang out a couple of lines when the dog jumps up and wants you to play. You take him out for a walk. Two hours later, your back at the laptop, after putting on the washing, done the dishes, having a chat with the neighbour about the weather and making a fresh brew.

You begin project again, phone rings, it’s the other half “Can you put the washing out, and defrost the chicken for…” and so, it goes on, lunch by yourself and you think to yourself, “there’s got to be some other way”.

Working for yourself has never been easier, with private or shared pods, a meeting room space, an inspiring break out space and most importantly a space where you can, connect, collaborate and create with other freelancers and business. Co-working is a way of life and a positive choice for those wanting to create colleague relationships and be part of a community rather than work alone. The Coworking environment is a supportive a platform designed to support your business. To be a part of a friendly coworking community visit www.villageworkspace. co.uk find out about how you can get involved and be a Coworking Villager.

Meanwhile at Village Workspace, St Albans, a shared workplace for freelancers’ and those working for themselves productivity is well under way as part of the daily coworking life. We all love a bit of branding don’t we? It’s what makes us feel a certain way about a product or service. How do you feel when you think of the Disney brand? Or Coca Cola at Christmas, or even good old McDonalds?

Branding builds a picture of the business behind it, are they trusted? Reputable? Honourable? And it’s amazing how quickly people will judge you purely on your outward facing communication - yes, your branding!

of a logo that perhaps still includes a fax number ;), then does that build a picture in your mind that they are an up to date, passionate and on the ball company, or is their unkept, unloved van an echo of how they run their business? People do judge a book by it’s cover unfortunately - so branding gives you the perfect opportunity to communicate how businesses want to be perceived. What are your favourite brands? Let us know at www.thebrandit.co.uk

So if you see a rusty old van driving down the road with a half painted, or poor effort

Our recipe is pretty straightforward:

Take six hard-working women, a rather splendid young man and a joke-telling pig-rabbit, the world's biggest search engine, some forward thinking customers and mix well. Add Sprinkle with endless hours of number crunching enthusiasm and serve hot. extensive market research some seriously creative writing We realised on day one that we can only do a lot of patience well if our clients do a bucketful of tenacity well so we try to stay a Bit of luck focused on their success at all times. We really like what we do and it shows, call us to find out how we can help you.

So…the big question. Why join? St Albans was the start of The Businesses Community; we refer to it as St Albans Businesses – or SABS. Membership is open to anyone who has a business in St Albans. That can be a business based in St Albans, an outlet in St Albans or has a strong customer base in St Albans. The aim of SABs has been to build a community of business people who can work alongside each other in our great City. As part of that community we’re stronger – we care about each other, our businesses, where and how we work. As the SABS community has grown, those members have formed collaborations we would never have dreamed of, been supported through challenging times and celebrated our achievements every step of the way. We hope that answers the ‘why join’ question – but if you want to know more, we’re happy to have a chat or put you in touch with one of our members who can tell you what membership has done for their business.
