As a child I loved adventure stories. I could battle dragons, travel and find treasure all from the comfort of my bedroom. My favourites were ‘choose your own adventure books’. I was one of those terrible children who would flick ahead to see what might happen and then go back and decide on the best outcome. If only actual life was so easy! Why am I telling you all this? It’s because I believe the stories that we tell ourselves about ourselves are vital. They shape not only how we see ourselves, but in turn how we act. If others, or ourselves have created unhelpful stories such as ‘I always give up’ over the years, then this becomes our reality. Nowadays I help people create and live better stories. I started decorating 25 years ago when a women’s course came up in the paper for Oakland’s college. I couldn’t settle in any other job and remember seeing my mum do our decorating and always wanted to do it - but in those days, that’s not what girls did! So when a course came up, I jumped at the chance. After my course I started delivering leaflets in my area in St Albans to get jobs, carrying my ladders to work until I had enough money to buy my first van. I deliver antenatal classes for first time parents and refresher classes for parents who already have children. The aim is to discuss the realities of having a baby but also build confidence in your ability to birth your baby and how your birth partner can help and support you.
