The ‘Aart’ of boosting your brand We chatted with Aarti Parmar of AP Brand Communications about her “Boost Your Brand” workshops So, Aarti, you run “Boost Your Brand” workshops - what does this actually mean? I was coming across existing businesses who are getting swept away with the day to day running of their business, feeling like they are going round in circles, not really evolving or wanting to develop and grow but not sure how. The workshop allows them to rediscover, gain new perspectives, refocus and reconnect with who they are as a brand. Knowing the brand, what it’s brand purpose, vision, values and key brand attributes are will surely give it a boost in the right direction! Why is it so important for businesses to get their branding right? Having the right branding means you can effectively communicate to your relevant target market using your website, social pages, advertising, PR etc. In the workshop we get clarity on your BRAND. If it’s not clear on the inside. It will never be clear on the outside.
04
But it’s not just a workshop that people are booking for it is? There’s pre and post support, a network and connections available - can you tell us a bit more about that? We have a chat before the workshop as I want to ensure the workshop is right for you and vice versa. The workshop is intense, thought provoking and very hands on. Post workshop I arrange a follow up call to make sure you are on track with what you discovered and the journey continues to move forward.
Find out more about Aarti’s Boost Your Brand workshops in London and St Albans here Or book a call with Aarti to discuss your business brand and branding on 07557768107
We chatted with Paul Lesnik at Headcase Barbers on Holywell Hill all about the latest trends in mens haircuts. So Paul, what sort of style are most guys going for these days - is there a trend at the moment? Skinfades are still extremely popular with most of the age groups and I think they will be here to stay for the forseeable future as they mean an easier life with less hair to look after! Our younger clientele are going for the short sides with heavy disconnection into the top and favouring more length with natural movement. And are beards still as popular as they were? Beards have taken a bit of a back seat in the last year or so with many guys going back to the short stubble, we find that those that fell head over heels in love with facial hair have kept it and maybe will going forward which is nice to have the variation! And what about beard care - are products for the beard popular and do you stock them in the shop? At Headcase St.Albans we like to use a beard foam by “Rezeul” as its nice and light, easy to use and not greasy which we find all of the beard oils we’ve tested even when they claim “non greasy” still end up a little heavy.
What other kinds of products do you stock? Currently we stock “Fudge” as we feel they have a good wide range of products from matte texture pastes & creams with natural shine to blowdry sprays and the all important texture dusts......they cover all bases! So can people walk in off the street and buy products? Absolutely... we try to always keep our stock levels up to date so everything is readily available and worst case we have a great relationship with our suppliers so can get products into stock within 3 days.
Do people need to book haircuts and beard trims in advance or can they just rock up? We like to run a walk in service as we feel this offers the most fair way for our clients to get a haircut. All my team have a
05
hairdressing background and are used to working with appointments but we all feel the walk in service work best as most gents still make those last minute decisions when it comes to getting a trim! Anyone worried about long queues... we definitely have those quieter periods we can easily recommend, and when there is a queue we offer free beers, freshly ground coffee and other refreshments to pass the time, also our music playlist is outstanding... if we do say so ourselves!
Find out more about Paul, his team and all the fabulous services they have to offer at Headcase Barbers, 12 Holywell Hill, just next door to Clarks Camera Centre before you get to Hatch or Cositas. Or have a watch of their short video here to get a vibe for the place.
Do you have to be a certain age to get your haircut at Headcase Barbers? Not at all, we cater for all ages young to old! I will be honest and admit our prices aren’t the cheapest for kids but that is because we do things properly and don’t cut corners (no pun intended) so this in turn takes time and although it sounds crude we are a business and time is money.
It’s all about the people! Kavya, can you tell us a bit more about Madison HR and how your services benefit businesses? We have over 30 years’ of HR experience & use it to help small businesses and individuals. By engaging our services, we can help your business attract and retain the right people. The beauty of engaging an external HR consultant is that you have the reassurance that our advice is objective and fair. So, businesses can simply hire in your services rather than have their own HR department? It depends really. In most cases we are an outsourced resource for organisations who are not at the stage where they require an in-house HR professional. There have been times when we have worked collaboratively with internal HR teams; who may be overloaded or need independent support e.g. for sensitive investigations.
06
And they can hire you on a project by project basis, or, if they want that regular support, there is a retainer option? Currently, there is a 50:50 split between our work for retainer clients and HR projects. Our retainer clients have the comfort of knowing that we are available to them on a regular basis. Examples of recent casework we have completed includes: managing long term sickness absence, providing mental health support and conducting investigations into allegations of theft & harassment. madisonhr.co.uk
Adam Shilston - owner of My Big Day Events and DJ to the TBC Woo Hoos tells BizCom how it all began! My career in entertainment started as a DJ in bars, clubs, and on local radio stations in my home town of St Albans, Hertfordshire. As my experience and popularity grew, I found myself Djing on the London nightlife circuit peaking with an award judged by executives of MTV, National Press, and International record labels cosigned by none other than International DJ & TV star Jazzy Jeff. This propelled me into Djing alongside celebrities and international Djs and Acts for some years to come from London to Europe, and even as far as Africa. Many years following this were spent organising & promoting my own events & concerts nationwide in venues to crowds of 1000’s of people paying to see well known acts at the time such as Professor Green, JLS, Fluer East, and and the list went on. I thoroughly enjoyed this challenge but once my first son was born I decided to start a new challenge which kept me closer to my family launching mylocaldj which is a 5 star Wedding & Party DJ company and then My Big Day Events which has become one of the go to Wedding & Event hire companies in Hertfordshire.
My background of looking after high profile people, and their demands has given me the perfect skill set and experience to deliver very special entertainment, event hire, and production to my clients organising weddings, corporate events, and parties with the support and help of my amazing team. Establishing My Big Day Events has been an amazing challenge but one I wouldn’t change for anything, and every new event gives me great satisfaction and excitement which i’m truly humbled by and motivated to keep delivering nothing but the best experience for my clients. We work with some amazing people, venues, and suppliers who all help with the success of My Big Day Events.

Let’s find out more about charities in St Albans In this issue we find out about Home-Start Hertfordshire Hi Suzy, You are the Strategic Manager at Home Start Hertfordshire here in St Albans, can you tell us a bit more about what Home Start Herts do? We provide support for families with young children who are struggling. This may be due to suffering from post-natal illness, isolation, physical health problems, their children’s additional needs, bereavement and many other issues, that make parenting even more challenging than it already is at times. Each family receives the support of a volunteer family mentor who will spend around two/three hours a week in a fam ily’s home. Through practical and emotional
10
support, they enable parents to build the skills, confidence and strength they need to nurture their children and give them the best start in life. One volunteer described their role, supporting a mother with a baby and 4 yr old child with autism: “We sometimes go to the playground (a full time job for two people). On other occasions I amuse and occupy James as best I can (and this takes all my patience and ingenuity) while the baby sleeps and mum has a chance to sort paperwork, do some laundry, or just grab a bite to eat and a cuppa for herself. At times there is no milk or fresh food in the house as mum avoids going to shops. If I am there I can help mum with James if he becomes agitated.”
What are your goals for the charity this year? 1. As with every charity our primary goal is to increase income generation so we can support the increasing need of local families. We currently have over 80 families waiting. The challenges facing young families are more severe than ever because of statutory funding cuts reducing local services and the current economic instability. We have the skills and the volunteers to help them all, but without additional funding, we can’t afford to employ the additional staff needed to manage and support the increased demand. 2. Further develop our corporate strategy to build 2-3 year partnerships with companies. We have some great relationships with several local companies and know that having a positive two way relationship can be really rewarding for both partners. 3. Build on our newly established community volunteer team. To have a team with a wide range of skills and experience for the various roles we have, such as; collection tin distribution, event assistance, marketing support - pretty much anything goes!
How can people get involved and help out? • Join our community volunteer team • Set up a monthly donation (just £2.50 per week supports a family to attend a family group where they can build friendships and the children can play and learn with other children) • Organise a fundraising activity/challenge (ideas on our website https://www.homestartherts.org.uk/events-fundraising/) • Choose us as your company charity of the year • Follow and share our social media platforms Where can people find out more? So what is the life of a mobile hairdresser like? “It’s great”, says Cheryl Light, who’s been hairdressing for years! She’s seen the trends come and go, the classics stay and the pinks and purples arrive! “Being mobile enables me to work around my young family. I’ve got clients that have now turned into friends - I’ve been cutting and colouring their hair for years and it’s great to hear about their families and what they get up to. I cater for men and women, and also children - and am a dab hand at understanding what my customers want to achieve. Helping people to feel amazing is what it’s all about.”

Signing is for everyone Hi Clare, so how did you get into signing?
You run classes across St Albans don’t you?
My Signing journey started 5 years ago when I went to Signing Babies classes with my twin boys who were 5 months old. I’d never Signed before but had heard from a friend what a difference Signing made to the communication she had with her baby and I wanted that too. In 2017 the opportunity arose to become a franchisee of The Signing Company in the area of St Albans, Harpenden and Redbourn. I am now studying my BSL Level 2 qualification.
I do, I offer all three levels of The Signing Company Early Years programmes in St Albans in two great locations, St Paul’s Church, Fleetville and Scout DHQ near the hospital. I also run Signing Babies classes in Redbourn Library and Harpenden, St Nicholas Church in the town centre too. Check out the details online www. clare.thesigningcompany.co.uk
What are the benefits to parents and children of learning to sign if you are able to hear already? Signing with children (Deaf or Hearing) and particularly babies helps their communication. Often frustration occurs when the baby wants to tell you something but doesn’t know how, with Signing that changes. The baby can tell you they are hungry and want milk for example. They can Sign their thoughts (about everyday life) and it brings about a greater understanding between the parent and child. I also have families joining my classes whose children have hearing loss, we’re there for everyone. We always emphasise that the word is spoken and Signed at the same time to encourage the association between the word and action/object. If parents keep practising the Signs at home too, it won’t be long before their child is Signing back, which is definitely a “Golden Moment.”.
What sort of age group do you cater for? Signing Babies for 5 months plus, Signing Toddlers for 18 months plus and Signing Talkers for 2 year plus. During each session we use British Sign Language (BSL) keyword Signs based on a topic such as family, animals, colours etc. We sign songs and nursery rhymes, meet our puppet friends and finish with bubbles. Each level provides the children with more in-depth vocabulary and activities are aimed at the different age groups, for example the toddlers have matching games and the talkers look at phonics. Do you offer private tuition for signing as well? I can run workshops for families and nurseries on request. These can be tailored to meet your needs. Contact me to discuss further. How can people get in touch with you? More information about classes can be found online www.clare.thesigningcompany.co.uk or via email clare@thesigningcompany.co.uk
I love watching the children grow in their confidence and communication and the special bond that develops between parents carers is just beautiful.

You can’t beat a bit of TLC We caught up with Neil Barras-Smith and Leah Waller of Total Legacy Care to ask them a few questions about Powers of Attorney. So guys, what actually is a Power of Attorney? So, a Lasting Power of Attorney allows you to appoint someone (or the people, as you can choose more than one!) that you TRUST to make decisions for you when you are unable to. Now, this may be because you have lost capacity permanently or even on a temporary basis (stroke/accident etc.), or because you are physically unable to, for example if you are stuck abroad (like when that volcano erupted an all flights were cancelled) and you are unable to sign documents, get to the bank, pay your staff, all those things we take for granted! At what sort of age should people start thinking about getting a Power of Attorney? You can put an LPA in place as soon as you are 18 and to be honest, why wouldn’t you? Not to tempt fate, but an accident can happen to any of us at any time. When we are under the age of 18, our parents have parental responsibility for us and can make decisions in our best interest but as soon as we hit 18 that is gone, we are out in the big wide world all on
16
our own! Why is it so important to get this in place? A few of reasons that we think are most important: PEACE OF MIND: you know that you have measures in place to enable those you love and trust most to make the decisions you would want to be made when you are unable to make those decisions YOUR CHOICE: if you put an LPA in place it is YOUR decision as to who has the power to make decisions for you, and basically step into your shoes, when you are unable to make decisions for yourself. COURT OF PROTECTION: if you don’t have an LPA in place and you are unable to make decisions for yourself then your loved ones will have to apply to the Court of Protection to appoint a Deputy to make decisions on your behalf and this means: LOSS OF CONTROL: the Court will appoint who they think is best placed to make decisions on your behalf and this may not be the person that you would have chosen. COSTS – this will definitely run into thousands of pounds if you seek legal assistance plus there is a court fee (currently £385) to make the application TIME – with an LPA these can be used as
soon as they are registered, or when you lose capacity - if you have to wait for the Court of Protection to appoint a Deputy, this will take a minimum of four months even if there are no objections…and what happens during that time?! Is it something that should be done at the same time as a will? Many people will do this at the same time as a Will as it is likely that the person preparing your Will can also prepare your LPAs (like us ;)) BUT it doesn’t have to be. Often, when you are thinking about who to include in your Will, whether that be your Executors, Guardians or Beneficiaries – these are all likely to be considerations when thinking of who you would like to appoint as your Attorneys *Note that although an Attorney steps into your shoes and acts on your behalf, your Will cannot be changed for you. You, and only you, can write your own Will when you have to have capacity to do so.
So if people already have a Will in place, do they need to get a Power of Attorney with the company that wrote their wills for them? No. LPAs can be prepared at a different time to your Will and not all Will Writers will prepare LPAs. Where do people get a Power of Attorney from? US! But of course we would say that wouldn’t we? In all honesty though, appointing Attorneys in an LPA is a big step and a MASSIVE decision, these are the people that will be stepping into your shoes and making decisions on your behalf when you are unable to and so if you are asking a company to help prepare your LPAs, pick a company you trust and are comfortable talking all possible scenarios through with.
Does it take long to organise and is it expensive? No, not at all – time that is. An initial meeting to go through everything and discuss your situation, requirements any specifics and the potential Attorneys. We will then go away and draw up all the paperwork, ensuring everything is as you want and sending you drafts to check over, consider and ensure that you are still happy with your decisions. We then meet again to get the forms signed and we also liaise with the Attorneys to get their parts signed. We can also act as Certificate Provider to ensure everything is in order and you understand the power you are giving to your Attorneys and what it all means. Once sent to the Office of the Public Guardian - this can take up to 12 weeks for them to process and do their background checks to ensure all is in order and that nothing underhand is going on. Cost, I suppose that is subjective… can you put a cost on peace of mind – well, everyone has their pay points I suppose! What I would say is that getting your LPAs sorted now, whilst you still have capacity, saves going to the Court of Protection (and we have set out some of the issues with that above) and this is a lot cheaper and can be used immediately, unlike going to the Court of Protection. The Office of the Public Guardian charge a fee of £82 per LPA to register it and then the costs of the company you choose to prepare all the paperwork and forms for you and act as your Certificate Provider. Get in touch with Neil or Leah at Total Legacy Care for more information – Info@TotalLegacyCare.co.uk or www. TotalLegacyCare.co.uk or watch this short video about Humpty Dumpty that explains things a bit more.

Why we have faith in Paloma Paloma tells us about the venue space at St Albans Museum & Art Gallery So, Paloma, how long has this gorgeous building been open? We’ve been open since 8th June 2018, so just over a year now. And the renovations, we were lucky enough to come and look round with Willmott Dixon whilst they were renovating the whole place and it’s absolutely stunning, I mean what a gem to have here in St Albans. Absolutely, it is beautiful, we are so lucky. We are in the city centre, we have so much daylight coming in, it is wonderful working here. And the venue, we have the two venue spaces for hire which is the stunning courtroom, which is absolutely beautiful, do take a look at the video, which is perfect for 70 people for a sit down dinner, or we can do 60-70 for reception drinks, we can always take more people by using the landing gallery and entrance of the museum. We squeezed 80 in for the Woo Hoos! If you have got a larger event or larger party there’s the gorgeous Assembly Rooms, again have a look at the video, it takes 150 theatre style and 120 banqueting style and it’s just amazing for photographs, as
18
Paloma said, the daylight comes in through the massive windows and you can have decorations, DJ, anything that you want to bring in as well and Paloma and the team have all the catering side sorted. So you can accommodate all dietary requirements? Yes, all dietary requirements, we are happy to take your feedback from any of the menus. We will give you guidance on what works best, but we are happy to hear from you and take on board any of your ideas. And also, in the courtrooms, you can go and hot-desk or have meetings there, Paloma and the team welcome you to use that space, they have free WiFi, grab yourself a coffee and a cake perhaps in the restaurant, lots of choose from, Vegan, Gluten Free, anything you could want and they are open from 10am Mon-Sat and 11am on Sundays. We close at 5pm every day. Our food is all home-made here on the premises. Book a viewing of the venue spaces at the St Albans Museum and Art Gallery with Paloma and the team

So what on earth are the Woo Hoos? Well, it all started when we were seeing the growth and success of so many businesses within TBC and we wanted to have a night where we could recognise these achievements and celebrate them. We wanted an informal night, no judging, we simply invited our members to nominate any businesses that they felt deserved a pat on the back for what they were achieving in business - whether that be things like starting a business, going international or overcoming hurdles etc. The first 30 businesses nominated were invited to join us at the Woo Hoos held in the stunning Courtrooms at the St Albans Museum and Art Gallery to receive their “Awards”.
20
What’s with the Pineapples? Pineapples are the symbol of wealth and success which we thought was very apt for the celebrations - the first year that we held the Woo Hoos, we had beautiful golden Pineapples as the “awards” that were also money boxes - they were gorgeous sourced by the fabulous Emma Bustamante of Cositas on Holywell Hill. The second year, we had beautiful white Pineapple, again sourced by Emma, and this year, we had totally bespoke Pineapple Bookends designed and made by Tom Mitchell of The Timber Club - they were stunning! No pressure for next years awards!
And you had sponsors for the event? Yes, we had 30 fantastic sponsors - and 30 amazing businesses nominated for their amazing achievements. It was a fantastic night.
Read all about our sponsors, winners and check out all the photos on our website here If you would like to sponsor a Woo Hoo for 2020 find out more here

Skin Tightening - how does that work? Sally Shepherd, owner of Eve and Adam tells BizCom what it’s all about
Here we are with Sally Shepherd from Eve and Adam, on Catherine Street, who’s been here for 16 years! That’s amazing! What an achievement - you’ve got to be really proud of yourself. 16 years, started in 2003, just found out you were pregnant, great time to start a business!!! And you’ve evolved over 16 years into what a fantastic salon you’ve got here now. Thank you, Sue, I am proud but I’m not arrogant enough to think that it’s just down to me, it’s very much about the support - there’s a lot of people behind the scenes, not just my amazing team, who are fantastic, my fab team behind me, but also other people that you don’t see, supportive people, such as people in the group, TBC, all my clients, family, friends, obviously without all of this you are nothing. It’s been a struggle at times, but I wouldn’t change it, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. And it’s not just nails, pedicures, manicures which are obviously very popular here? Yep, the nails and the beauty side of things, hot-waxing is the bread and butter of the business and our staple and that is very popular, but we are very much a skin clinic as well - so we are looking at results driven treatments. From aesthetic injectables from a qualified prescribing nurse to skin tightening treatments, micro pen which is micro needling
24
and now we are just bringing in a new treatment called the Skin Gym. That sounds good, is that a workout for your face? Yes, absolutely that, so it works on stimulating the muscles and if you have that treatment at the end of your facial, it’s going to give an absolute boost to your skin. So tightening of the skin, so is that good for wrinkles and the old saggy neck and things like that? Yes, so radio frequency is one of the technologies we use for skin tightening, it does absolutely lift and tighten which works on the collagen production which obviously smooths your skin out. We also offer Alumiere peels and what they do, they are not just for anti-aging, they are fantastic for skin resurfacing, acne, scarring, rosatia, pigmentation and like all of these things, you can do courses of the various treatments to get a bespoke course just for you - that’s the way we are going now. If one product works for you we will prescribe that, if that’s not the right product for you, we have other products - so we work with a good range to make sure it’s the right one for the right customer. Perfect - well Congratulations once again and to many more happy years! Contact Sally here
Isn’t trying to save money boring? Nic Rutherford gives us some very interesting information on the subject When we work so hard to bring money in, why do we put money-saving opportunities to the bottom of the “to-do” list? For many of us it’s the “it’s too time consuming” thought. Or the “it’s going to be too painful to look at other ways of doing what I’m doing”. Or the “I don’t actually believe I can save money in my business”. But you most probably can! In fact, Nic Rutherford, who created UK Business Buddy 6 years ago, started the business to do just that! To help small businesses to get better rates on the services that they have. Nic has found that he has been able to save businesses literally thousands of pounds on things like their card payment systems such as chip and pin machines, e-commerce gateways and payments over the phone. Nic works with the major players in the market including Barclaycard, Lloyds, HSBC, First Data and Santander. They effectively buy wholesale prices and pass on the savings to their clients. But the thought of changing payment systems just fills us with dread but we also know that we’d love to cut the costs
of what we pay out on the hard earned money we bring in. That money could be spent on a fabulous holiday, or days out with the family, or even reinvested back into the business! So surely it’s worth booking a quick coffee with Nic to find out whether he can save your business money, and how seamlessly he can do it for you. There’s No Pain, but there is definite Gain! Email Nic at hello@ukbusinessbuddy.com to get a coffee or a sparkling elderflower water in the diary. Nic can also help with Commercial Energy, EPOS and business funding. Nic works with over 500 lenders as well but the fabulous thing is that UK Business Buddy is totally independent – so Nic and his team can find the right solutions for YOUR business. And, if Nic doesn’t think he can save you any money, you’ve had a nice coffee or a sparkling elderflower water with a nice chap!

So what’s the Brandit all about then? Well, we absolutely love branding! We could sit there and design logos all day long - we absolutely love it. We also love coming up with creative ideas to communicate what our clients are trying to say - simply, clearly and with a bit of a difference. So who is your ideal client then? We’ve worked with all sizes of business - from start ups to large corporates and we’ve been in the industry for over 30 years. When I first started it was cut and paste with a scalpel. My dad is a graphic artist and both my brothers worked in print, so I guess we got the creative gene from Dad. I guess my ideal client would be someone who wants a new logo, or to update an existing one and clients that want help with ideas and delivering the concepts through design to enable customer to understand what it is that they do.

The Dancing Queen We chatted with Chief Legwarmer Wearer, Sue Wybrow of Popdance to find out what celebrating 10 years of Popdancing feels like?
And a little bird tells us that you’ve written a book as well?
I know! Crazy isn’t it! I can’t believe it!
Yes, we were writing marketing tips for dance teachers each week, so we ended up turning it into a book - it was fantastic to see our hard work in print after all these years.
So how did it all start then?
So what’s next on the horizon?
Well, I was working in marketing and had just had our two sons and I wanted to go to a dance class to have a bit of “me” time, get away from the phone, work, etc and switch off a bit - I wanted to learn fun dance routines to pop music from the 80s, 90s and 00s. I chatted with some friends about it and they thought it was a fab idea, so working with amazing dance teachers, Popdance was born in January 2009!
Well we are working hard to bring Popdance to lots more areas as there’s such demand for it, so a teacher recruitment campaign as well as upping the marketing for our existing licenced Popdance Teachers - it’s so lovely to watch their businesses flourish and for Popdance to work around their lives. We’ve got teachers with young families who don’t want to be out teaching everything themselves, so it’s been great helping them to build their teams, we’ve got teachers who want Popdance as a simply add on to what they do and we’ve got teachers who are making Popdance their whole career. And we love marketing and supporting them! It works really well.
Wow, Sue, 10 years!
But it quickly grew didn’t it? Yes, more and more people wanted to have a class in their area, and more and more dance teachers got in touch to find out how they could get involved - so we opened where the teachers wanted to - sporadically in Manchester, Scotland, Oregon USA and Cyprus! Amazing! But it didn’t stop there did it? Nope, we were asked to get Popdancing in a Holiday Park and they wanted to involve the kids, so we launched Popdance Kids and Popdance Family classes in 2010, shortly followed by Popdance Tots (again, due to demand). And we offered not only classes, but parties, workshops within schools and groups like brownies, cubs, guides etc., hen parties, wedding dances, corporate teambuilding events - anything to do with learning fun dance routines to pop music, then people wanted to Popdance!
So what kind of money are we talking about to be a Popdance Licenced Teacher? It’s just £20 per month - that gives teachers a licence to run Popdance classes, parties and events, to use our brand, all our choreography, our downloads, marketing, support etc. plus they have the opportunity to make a fantastic living. popdance.co.uk

Wow! It’s been a hell of a ride hasn’t it, Kick Pistol? Yes, absolutely - not only have we just finished our GCSE’s but we’ve also been gigging, writing, recording, rehearsing, launching our brand new website and really enjoying chatting with lots of people on social media. How do you keep up with it all? Well we absolutely love what we do with a passion! We are so driven by music that it all just seems to happen really. Rob always has lyrics going round in his head, so he gets them down on paper and then we all work with those. Ernie is starting to get into songwriting but also he took to the mic at a gig we just did at Oddfellows in Apsley. Yes, I have to say that I was really nervous (Ernie), but I absolutely loved it. So what gigs do you have coming up? Well, we just played mainstage at M Fest, now in it’s 10th year, at Marlborough Science Academy where we all met and formed the band. It was a fantastic event and we loved playing to 3,000+ people amazing. The atmosphere was incredible and it was great to play at the school 2 of us have just left. Rob and Ernie are going on to college to study Music Tech and Production and Neta is staying in 6th Form - she’s an amazing artist.
28
We’ve also got a big gig at The Horn on Thursday 15th August where we are in the final of the Battle of the Bands competition. Ernie is even giving up his holiday to be there so it’s really important to us. What kind of music is it that you play? We would say indie/rock - we write and play our own stuff but we also do a few covers we do love a bit of Muse. And did we hear that you are already signed to a label and you have an EP out? Yes, last year we were signed by Nub Music. We recorded our first EP and single last year as well - all of which are available via the usual channels, spotify, itunes, deezer etc. or via our website. Well done guys, and congrats on your amazing achievements so far - good luck in Battle of the Bands - can people get tickets to come along and support you? Yes, get booking here - we’d love to see you there. kickpistol.com
The family that played a blinder We are lucky to have a knowledgeable and friendly team of fitters who always arrive with a smile and make sure you are left with a tidy home and a quality installation.
So what is the benefit of coming to Allegro Blinds over picking up a blind from somewhere like Homebase? It truly is the age old saying... ‘You get what you pay for’ and this comes with blinds too. The online retailers and DIY stores are ok if you’re looking for a temporary or cheap solution, though you can’t always guarantee the product will fit or work. So you come to Allegro for our expertise, good quality and the guarantee that comes with the products and labour. We are proud of the fact that 70% of our customers are from word of mouth and repeat business – so we must be doing something right! You offer a full measure and fit service don’t you? How does that work? Our ethos is ‘Family’ and ‘Customer Service’ which for us translates into building great relationships with current and future customers. So that’s why we offer a free quote and measure service for starters, to make sure that Allegro is the company for you and what you are looking to achieve. The team come out to your home or new property and bring the showroom to you with all our samples and ideas. We discuss what you’re looking for and what product will work, then measure up so we can create a competitively priced quote and build on the wonderful relationships we have created – all free of charge.
Do customers find it difficult to choose from the selection of blinds that you offer? Choosing one of our products is generally quite easy, because we have some sample blinds that we bring to you so you can see firsthand how they work and what they look like. However, we will be the first to admit that it can be a difficult process for our customers sometimes in making a choice of colour or fabric from the large array available, but that’s why we are there in your home so you can take time and make sure they’re happy they’ve got the right style and design and they can be confident it will compliment the rest of their décor and furniture.
If you are interested in chatting with Trish or Sam about a one-off blind or a complete fit out for your office, home or hotel - get in touch at 01582 831052 or info@allegroblinds-stalbans.co.uk

Join us for something a bit different! Sometimes we are just so busy with life, work, family, social media – rushing here, rushing there, that we thought it was time to STOP! Take stock and have a bit of “me” time. “Taking time out to take your foot off the accelerator pedal and do things which build your energy like creative exercises such as art are a wonderful way to allow headspace in our lives. They can activate the parasympathetic nervous system which is the “rest and digest” part of the brain and is essential for us to restore” – Ruth Farenga Founder of Mindful Pathway – Practical Mindfulness training for a modern world

Geraldine explains the power of the mind Hi Geraldine, we know that you are a hynotherapist, but what does that actually mean? Being a hypnotherapist means I help clients make changes to the unhelpful programmes that they’re running in the deeper parts of their brain using a natural relaxing state that some people call trance. Mindset is truly incredible, so how do you help us to “train” our brains to think differently? I like to use a past, present and future process. Through this hypnotic trance state I can help you let go of the baggage of the past that’s keeping you stuck, enabling you to believe differently about yourself in the present and getting you to mentally rehearse making better choices in the future. There’s a number of tools I use to achieve that but that would be a whole article in itself! Can hypnotherapy literally help with all aspects of our lives? Not just weight loss and giving up smoking? Yes! Everything we do in terms of our behaviour is affected by our beliefs about the world and ourselves. Through Hypnotherapy I can help you challenge those unhelpful beliefs and when you think differently, you act differently.
38
How many sessions do people usually need? It varies on what the client is after help for but Hypnotherapy is considered a ‘quick’ therapy where I would expect to see significant changes after a block of three sessions. Do you offer any “top ups” or “reminder” notes at all? Where longer terms support is needed such as for weight loss, many of my clients come back for top up sessions to keep them on track and motivated. What the best way to get in touch with you if readers want to find out more? You can book in for a free consultation via my website here!
Straight talking We chatted with Lisa Nichols of Straight Talk Social Media on how she helps you get more business with Instagram. Lisa, can you tell us a bit more? I work with people who are grown ups, so let’s not be ageist, but for people born in the last century. We’re good at our business and we know what marketing is but now that it’s online and it’s digital it can be very confusing. I take what we already know in marketing and I show people how to translate that into instagram and facebook stories. Literally showing people what buttons to press and what kind of stories will work for their business.
There’s lots of interaction via stories and it’s a fantastic way of communicating what your business does, offers, who you are, your personality - people buy from people and it’s our job to tell the story of the benefits of working with us - the value that we bring to our customers and stories are a fantastic way of doing that. Isn’t it really time consuming though, Lisa? If you can outsource the things that other people can do, and you stay in your lane, noone can be you, so it’s great to have you as the forefront of your instagram stories, but if you are stuck for time, you can delegate a lot of social media scheduling - plus, with stories, it gives you tons of content to share on various other platforms.
So how do you help businesses in particular? I’m there to be an initial hand-holder really. I Because there is no handbook - when you have a chat with you about what it is you want watch someone doing something, it’s so much to achieve, I show you how you can do that, easier than trying to fathom it out for yourself. leave you with some homework to refer to and Exactly, we will explain why and how Instagram or stalk you for a couple of weeks to make sure facebook stories are going to help your business you are all ok. Then you are off and running. and give you a structure and plan for what to do. I’m always here for more questions, support Even if you had a manual, it would be out of and ideas as well. date by Friday - the digital platforms change constantly and geeks like me are here to Watch our video chatting about all things help you to cut through the noise and get the Instagram for business knowledge that you need for your business. Get in touch with Lisa at Straight Talk Social Media But a lot of people say that they are too old to lisanichols.co.uk get stuck into digital marketing? What I say is don’t let this get in the way, just ask me - I’m an old git, but I geek out on this stuff day in day out, and I am here to translate it for you - you need to move your marketing activities into the 21st Century and I will give it to you in straight talk language too. More and more platforms are going into stories and what we hear is that people don’t want to scroll through all the time but simply want to watch the stories?
