Three things dance teachers can do right now for free The best things in life are free? Let’s find out… 1. Reduce your admin time One of the bugbears of being a dance teacher is the amount of class admin. You would rather just be out teaching your classes, right?

These are free to view on the EMD UK YouTube channel here. (Pro tip: best to subscribe as they’re releasing more content soon!)

classfinder, the UK’s largest database of group exercise classes, recently partnered with bookwhen to form classfinder Bookings. This new booking platform allows you to promote your classes, manage bookings, take payments, issue class passes, and transfer bookings in one easy place. And the best part is, there’s a free plan that any teacher can access! Find out more here.

2. Learning with the experts As the saying goes “Knowledge is power” and better still if you can get that knowledge for free. You don’t always need to do a course or qualification to expand your business knowledge. There are many widely accessible resources for you to choose from. During lockdowns last year, EMD UK, the national governing body for group exercise, ran a series of webinars on differe≠≠nt business boosting topics. These included how to reach new people on social media, how to create a marketing strategy for your business, and how to monetise on-demand content.

04

3. Utilising data Although you may know your current class participants inside out, how much do you know about what’s going on in your area? Keeping up to date with current trends and participation levels can help you understand how and where to attract new clients. It may even give you ideas for events and where you can apply for project funding. Handy right? Download Sport England data here.

Admin is boring, right? Listing classes here, managing bookings there, taking payments somewhere else. You deserve better.

classfinder Bookings let's you do all your class admin in one place for just £9+VAT per month. Easy. Start your journey to more you time today. Click here.

My Yoga Journey

So far, the launch of this wonderful magazine has presented me with the opportunity to provide you with a brief introduction to yoga, a little idea of what to expect at your first class, as well as present you with evidence as to why yoga is so good for our mental health. Therefore, this month I thought I would share with you a little about my yoga journey. As a child and teenager, I was extremely sporty and an accomplished gymnast, 08

representing my school and county. But gymnastics was where my passion lay and maybe that’s what drew me to yoga as I got older - I somewhat viewed it as gymnastics for grownups. It was over 20 years ago I visited my first class but that was where my yoga would start and finish – on the mat. I enjoyed my ‘workout’ and stretching myself into ‘shapes’ but it has only been in more recent years that I have come to realise, yoga is so much more than just exercise and reaches way beyond the mat. In 2013 I left my sales and marketing career and studied for a more challenging and rewarding one in teaching. A few years later I had what I can only describe as a calling and took steps towards gaining my yoga teacher qualification and completed my diploma in 2017. Nothing could quite prepare me for how my training would change my life and I soon realised this was literally just the start of a whole new chapter. This led me to study and train in more specific areas of yoga, such as Yin, Pregnancy

and Nidra - I am a self-confessed course addict! I love to learn and am continually updating and expanding my yoga and teaching knowledge and love sharing this with my students.

So why do I love yoga so much? Well, as someone who has ‘burnt out’ and experienced injury and illness, as well as long standing issues with my weight, I know first-hand the physical and psychological affects this can have on an individual. I totally understand how difficult it can be to love yourself and find the courage to go to a class for the first time. Especially when you are carrying extra weight or harbouring old injuries and negative self-belief. I believe yoga is for everyone and every body. I love creating a safe nonjudgemental space where people can come and practice yoga. An environment we can all benefit from.

So, whether it be working towards a fitter, stronger more flexible you. Or taking some ‘me time’, reducing anxiety or learning to relax. It’s all there within reach via yoga. I like to call it ‘yoga magic’. I recently celebrated my 50th birthday - I think, feel, breathe, and move better than I have ever done. But like most I am definitely a work in progress and my age comes with many new challenges – the biggest being the menopause (queue Menopause Teacher Training and next feature) Quite honestly, I don’t know how I’d survive without my yoga – it has changed my life and literally gives me superpowers! Therefore, it is my intention to help you find ‘your yoga’. So, I invite you to join me on the mat… Bat cape and tights are optional.

But did you know, that in 1958, Bruce Lee became the Crown Colony Cha Cha dancing champion of Hong Kong. Yes, cha cha. Perhaps we have this early training in Latin dance to thank for the grace and poise of his martial arts style.”

Tips To Reduce Stress from Bridgette Mansfield Hypnotherapy And what a stressful time it’s been!

due to school or peer pressure. However, a situation that feels stressful to one person may be motivating to someone else and this can be down to our past experiences, our learnt behaviours, our thought processes and our own level of self-esteem.

So how can hypnotherapy help reduce stress levels……………..

Stress is the feeling of being under too much mental or emotional pressure, when you feel unable to cope, which can cause health problems We all experience stress at one stage or another. It can be caused by health issues, money worries, constant worrying, loneliness, pressure at work, no work, lack of control, family problems, bereavement, divorce and many other reasons. Stress is recognised to be one of the main causes of sick absence from work and it seems that more and more children are suffering with stress

18

Stress is caused by our subconscious protecting us. We may go into a fight or flight response when we are in an uncomfortable situation. Our subconscious can’t tell the difference between what is real and what we are imagining so it sometimes acts as if we are in a life threatening situation when in fact all we are doing is for eg. a presentation in front of 20 people or starting a new job! We are then left with all this extra energy with nowhere for it to go. This can leave us with feelings of stress, anxiety, anger, depression, frustration, insomnia and mood swings

Being stressed is a physical reaction as much as an emotional one. Stress is everywhere in our lives these days. You cannot change that, but you can change your reaction to it. The aim is to find ways of managing stress and using it to our advantage

Self-hypnosis – tips for relaxation Hypnosis is known to be a powerful tool to help reduce stress. In fact, hypnotherapy for stress can be effective even after just one session You can complement your hypnotherapy sessions with selfhypnosis at home.

whether it’s a tropical beach, a beautiful garden or maybe your home. 4. Then repeat positive affirmations. For eg. I am calm…..I am relaxed…..I am in control Whatever you say to yourself in your mind, make sure it is positive (so don’t say to yourself…I am not stressed… as the subconscious does not recognise the negative.) After approximately 2 mins, you can count out 1,2,3, open your eyes and continue with your day. If you do this every day for two weeks, you will find that you start to think more positively.

1. Find a place where you can relax and be free of too many distractions e.g. your favourite chair, lying on your bed. 2. Take in a slow deep breath, imagining you are breathing in positive thoughts and feelings and then gently close your eyes. As you exhale, relax your body as much as you can and blow away any worries, stress and negative thoughts. 3. Count down from 10 -1 with each deep breath, feeling yourself sinking deeper and deeper into the chair. When you get to 1, imagine the most peaceful place for you,

Feel free to contact Bridgette to find out more or to discuss how to de-stress with hypnotherapy www.123relax.co.uk

Top Tips with Tania Bringing you tech tips from BT Skills for Tomorrow Make online gaming a positive experience for your family With the Summer holidays upon us, do you worry that your kids will be spending more time online gaming? Gaming has been the single most popular digital activity during lockdown with over half of school age children gaming every day from their mobile devices – and they’re not just using gaming platforms to ‘play games’. Research conducted by Internet Matters, a not-for-profit online safety organisation, suggests that children are using games to connect with friends, discover new interests and to learn and participate in online events - so just like playing physical games, playing games online is a huge part of your child’s development.

Whilst there are many positives to online gaming, there is still a real worry from parents, that their children spend too much time on multiplayer gaming. Seemingly unable to disengage or simply ‘pause’ the game. As the sun finally comes out, there is the daily battle of trying to get kids off the screen and outside for some physical exercise.

Gaming has been the single most popular digital activity during lockdown

Kids don’t have to be gamers to participate in the gaming world -

> 61% play alone > 48% play with others

64% say they watch videos of games they don’t play as a source of entertainment* How to make online gaming a positive experience for you family It’s a fine balance but make a start by talking to your children regularly about their online activity – make it part of the norm, just as you’d ask them about their day at school. As you feel more comfortable talking about their gaming activity, try introducing the following:

22

• Family agreement o Work with your child to agree what games and what times in the week they can play - that works for the whole family. o Try and be flexible if there is a particular time that your child will be meeting with their friends for a specific game. o Why not consider a family game night where the whole family gets involved? • Agree rules and boundaries - Ensure your child knows what to do if they: -

are contacted by a stranger

-

are being bullied or witness bullying in a game

-

feel they have to play/show the same behaviour as others i.e., an expectation to behave in a certain way when gaming

o Configure your web browsers securely, using a firewall o Set up their user profile to include age appropriate language and game content, ensuring security is always set high on their profiles and accounts o Ensure your child is aware that they should never give away personal information over the internet whilst playing or downloading games o Help your child create and use strong passwords, which should never be shared Want to help your family get the most out of tech?

Head to BT Skills for Tomorrow to find a range of free courses and advice – from parental controls and gaming advice to digital wellbeing.

Setting Controls Although not 100% effective, parental controls and privacy settings can provide confidence that you’re giving your child the best chance to be protected from harm. Reviewing the settings on the app or games console, as well as wi-fi settings should provide a good digital boundary and the main things to consider are:
