Common injuries in dance by David Outevsky PhD Dancers have always been a high-risk population for injuries; however, it is only in the last 30 years that attention has been put on their prevention and care by the medical and education communities.
Through the efforts of dedicated dance scientists and affected performers the formerly neglected issues caused by the demands of dance have been brought to the forefront of scientific and medical inquiry. Injuries in dance are manyfold, with the majority of them centered on the lower extremities due to dance’s emphasis on lower body mobility. Common problem areas include the foot, the ankle, and the knee. The foot and ankle often suffer ankle sprains, flexor hallucis longus tendonitis, sesamoiditis, and Achilles’ tendonitis. The Anterior Talofibular Ligament (see picture 1) running from the fibula to the talus has a major role in stabilizing the ankle during the demi-pointe position and is commonly involved in minor ankle sprains. Prevention might begin in the form of ensuring correct foot alignment of the dancers in demi-pointe, focusing on correct landing biomechanics (especially avoiding supination at the ankle), and strengthening the peroneal
08
muscle group that supports the area. Treatment should begin in the form of RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) and progress to an ankle brace if the injury is serious. The knee problems in dancers often appear in the forms of medial knee strain, patellofemoral pain, patellar subluxation and dislocation, patellar tendinitis, meniscal tears, and ligament injuries. Medial knee strains are commonly encountered in novice dancers and children. The pressure applied to the medial knee in a forced turnout during a plie can be a major cause for medial knee strains which can be avoided through correct alignment of the knee over the second toe and natural turn out at the hip joint without compensation at the knee joint. This issue manifests itself in a pain in the medial area (inside) of the knee which might disappear after a few hours rest if not aggravated. The best treatment for this condition is prevention in the form of biomechanical correction of turnout. A passive turn out test can be done
with the dancer lying prone (on his/ her front) with the tester bending their knee to a 90 degree angle and gently lowering their foot toward their other leg, when the tester feels resistance they have achieved the natural passive turnout of the dancer that should be used as a starting point to begin retraining their plies (see picture 2 below). Besides the injuries discussed above many injuries in dance are the result of improper training for specific body types and the lack of understanding of conditioning for each. In the video below we discuss hypermobility (double jointness) in dancers and how it can contribute to injuries as well as how to train dancers with this condition. Dr. Outevsky is joined by a former competitive jazz dancer Skylor Sensing who speaks about her experiences growing up as a hypermobile dancer. If you would like to learn more about this topic check out our course on dance injuries and conditioning with imagery workshops in the links provided.

2. Passive turn out test, the tester is using a goniometer here to measure the degree of turn out, however, it can also be done by visual estimate at first.
1. Approximate location of the Anterior Talofibular Ligament, note the slight Supination on the right ankle and how it can apply pressure on the ATL.

Getting the lowdown (ward facing dog) on yoga
According to latest yoga statistics, there has been a vast increase in the amount of people taking up yoga. Plus, a recent study by Finder.com* showed the interest in yoga in the UK, via Google searches, went through the roof during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic – the highest interest shown in yoga in the last 5 years. Yoga can have many positive effects on our physical and mental health, such as improving our posture, easing back pain, encouraging mindfulness, and reducing stress - It’s no wonder yoga has increased in popularity. So, what is yoga? Well, simply put, it is an ancient form of exercise which originated in India 5,000 years ago. The practice focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing, the main elements being the postures, known as asanas. There are many different branches of yoga which have developed through the years, ranging from a more traditional style to the weird and wonderful. We’re not all tie dye fans, sitting in the lotus position, ‘omming’ and clinking our cymbals.
12
We all know how important it is to look after our bodies and more recently, our minds too. And this could be why yoga is becoming more and more popular.
I would recommend trying various forms to find which works for you. Its also important to connect with your teacher. Here are a just few of the types of yoga you might want to consider – • Hatha -the type of yoga that typically comes to mind when you think of yoga. Classes include breathing exercises as well as physical postures and meditation. It’s generally performed at a slower pace with held poses. • Vinyasa – think Hatha but continually moving and flowing. A more dynamic practice, raising the heart rate. • Ashtanga – a challenging class that consists of six series of specifically sequenced yoga poses. • Hot – like Vinyasa but practiced in a heated room. Great if you like to get a sweat on. • Yin – the opposite to all the above. A calming meditative style practice.
Poses are held for several minutes, focusing on deep connective tissues and fascia. Great for stretching, unwinding, and complimenting your stronger practice. • Kundalini – a more spiritual practice including breathwork and meditation.
feeling zen, or just a total bad ass. So why not try yoga and see what it can do for you? You can find out more or get in touch here - yogibird.co.uk *Source: www.finder.com/uk/yoga-statistics
• Iyengar – all about the detail and body alignment with use of yoga props such as bricks and straps, holding the poses for longer periods of time. • Chair – modified yoga poses that can be done seated. Great for anyone who struggles with their mobility or who wants a break from the work accumulating on their desk. • Restorative – for everyone and anyone who struggles to slow down. A chilled slow-moving practice that allows you to experience deep relaxation. With everybody banging on about how yoga is good for us, what are the real health benefits? Studies suggest it is an effective way to increase strength, flexibility, and balance (I know this to be true as a practitioner and teacher). Some evidence also indicates that a regular yoga practice can lower high blood pressure, aid weight loss and benefit people suffering from heart disease, aches, pains, depression, and stress. We all have our own reasons for practicing yoga – ranging from ‘more me time’, ‘unplugging’, ’improving sleep’ and all the above. But for me personally, it has literally changed my life and is more than just exercise. My yoga doesn’t start and finish on my yoga mat. It’s a way of life. I am fitter and stronger than I have been in years. It helps clear my mind and taught me to breathe properly... and so much more. Sometimes I leave class

Dance Bosses - the storm may have passed! Hey dance bosses! I am Deborah Laws, The Dance Business Expert, founding director of Dance Business Lab and Number 1 best selling author of The Ultimate Dance Business Planner (available to purchase on Amazon).
I am thrilled to be appearing in the first edition of this fabulous magazine and want to start by saying a huge well done to you for navigating this tumultuous past year. I genuinely hope we can now see land and from what my lovely clients tell me things are starting to look up with many new trial students jumping onboard. Now more than ever is a very special time for you if you run a dance school. Parents are looking for activities to start up and children and adults are seeking new fun ways to integrate socially once more. What is more, people seem to have money, don’t
14
forget many weren’t affected financially by the pandemic and have barely spent what they usually budgeted for during this past year. So, my lovelies, your business has a golden opportunity to thrive and build beyond your dreams. I love a big dream but I also love plans and goals that will get you there strategies! I can teach you all these things, but also welcome you warmly into the most positive community of like minded dance business owners all working hard on their schools whilst helping each other grow in the process. I run Dance Business Lab, a company I am hugely proud of that offers both business and emotional support and opportunities in every aspect of running a highly successful and fulfilling dance school. In my 2 minute video you can find out more about how I can help you and where to find me. You amazing principals work far too hard for far too little in my eyes and it is time to create change. We were brought up in an environment where subconciously we learned that dance teachers shared their passion and nurtured their students because they were caring individuals dedicated to their art and the love teaching and not to earn money. In order to do this well you weren’t expected to be business minded and you certainly didn’t shout about making money. If you came across as running your school as a business it was almost shameful and therefore most principals ran their classes like clubs and volunteer organisations. Many still do and have a really hard time charging their worth and making the right decisions in their businesses.
I am determined to make changes to the mindset of dance school owners so that they see themselves as the true business men and women they are. Much of my time with my clients is spent working on mindset, money blocks and confidence. Working with me you get to learn so many amazing new things about business but first we have to empower and create the mindset that is desperately needed in order to achieve success. So if you know you need to learn new technology and create systems in your school because you are a bit of a tech dinosaur, or perhaps you need to embrace social media or learn how to market your business then come find me. I also teach you how to create the most incredible school that retains students for a lifetime and runs at an enviable profit. All this I have to say can be achieved while working just a few days a week. I can show you how! Check out the video, I look forward to connecting with you real soon.

A self-care toolbox you can draw on at any time
Hi, my name is Stacey. I am a yoga therapist, breathwork and iRest L2 meditation teacher and I am passionate about empowering myself and others with a potent self-care toolbox to manage stress and anxiety and enhance overall wellbeing.
20
Throughout 2020 stress levels were high and the ability to access such empowering self-care techniques became more important than ever. It was also a wakeup call because let’s face it, our pace of life is generally far too fast. As a dance fan you know that movement is essential. Personally, I love
walking, dancing around the kitchen to loud music but also slow, mindful movement. They may seem at odds to one another but we all need balance in our lives, which is why functional, mindful movement is integral to the women only yoga sessions I teach and a key driver of their popularity. But what is less familiar to most people is breathwork practices. Of course, you can use your breath in meditation to calm your ‘monkey’ mind and bring about more clarity but here I am talking about using specific breathwork techniques to destress, reduce anxiety or reenergise when needed; to work through stuck emotions and so on. And, as a dancer, breath is a vital component to optimise your practice. Honestly, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of becoming aware of how you breathe. Your breath can tell you so much about your state of mind, your energy levels and your overall wellbeing - if you tune in. However, it’s pretty easy to ignore our breathing since it is an automatic body function. So I ask you; do you ignore your breath and take it for granted? Are you even aware of how you should be breathing? Often it takes something that impacts the breath (health, emotional or psychological trauma or upset) for people to acknowledge issues they may have unknowingly been experiencing for years. Or a practitioner (such as a physio or osteopath) points out that you’re not breathing correctly. Maybe they have noticed tight diaphragm and excess tightness in the upper body due to overuse of accessory breathing muscles. I certainly don’t recommend waiting
until a problem surfaces but if you have reached a point where you feel some kind of discomfort or sense of unease when breathing (such as double intakes, upper chest breathing, breath holding, etc) my advice is to stop and listen really carefully. An inability to breathe correctly or fully can be a sign of stress and anxiety manifesting in the body. A fast and shallow breath (upper chest breathing) is sending messages to the brain that we aren’t safe. The brain then reacts by feeding adrenalized energy and a cycle is created, which before long, becomes an ingrained pattern we urgently need to break. Unfortunately, I see very few people nowadays who know how to breathe efficiently. This is truly worrying and a reflection of the highly strung nature of today’s society where so many are blissfully unaware of the damage that stress is doing to their bodies or how close they are to burnout. To quote James Nestor in his book The New Science of a Lost Art: “No matter what we eat, how much we exercise, how resilient our genes are, how skinny or young or wise we are – none of it will matter unless we’re breathing correctly… The missing pillar in health is breath. It all starts there”. For this reason I started The Art of Breathwork and Relaxation, a monthly session to help people become more aware and to teach practices they can use every day.

Hypnosis, health and happiness...and weight loss! So, is there ever a right time to change your lifestyle for the better? The answer is yes! And that answer is now! Whether it be joining a Popdance class, improving your eating habits, quitting smoking or to lose weight etc.
Hypnosis can help you to increase your self–esteem and boost your motivation and determination to achieve your goals. You will be taught self-hypnosis techniques that can be adapted to help you in many areas of your life. E.g. you will learn the difference between ‘physical’ hunger and ‘emotional’ hunger and find out what triggers your overeating and bingeing or lack of motivation. By eliminating negative self-talk and be your own best friend and understanding your body, you can become a happier, more productive person. Many people try every diet going, only to feel like a failure when they haven’t reached their target weight. Or maybe they did achieve their goal only to pile it all back on once they
22
came off the diet. Or perhaps they joined a gym in January, went twice and then gave up whilst continuing to pay monthly membership with the hope that they will go ‘one day’. Well, the good news is that lasting results come from changing your habits and learning to behave how naturally slim, fit and healthy people do. Have you ever disbelieved one of your slim and fit friends when they have said something like – ‘I eat all I want and don’t gain any weight and I love exercising.’ Maybe you thought, ‘Yeah right! They must be starving themselves or lying to themselves.’ Well, the truth is, is that they do eat all they want they just don’t have the desire or need to eat more than their body needs and they do love exercising because of the way it makes
them feel – these are all unconscious habits that you can learn too.
help you or a loved-one, please visit www.123relax.co.uk or contact bridgette@123relax.co.uk
Perhaps your self-esteem has taken a beating recently because you are upset with your inability to stick to your goals or you are upset with the way you look and feel. The safest, kindest way to lose weight and get healthy is to deal with the emotional reasons why you are overeating and why you can’t be bothered to exercise. Hypnosis can help you discover these reasons.
No matter what you are facing, whether it’s fears, phobias, anxiety, insomnia, stress etc we are sure that we can help you. We have a proven track record of success – just look at the testimonials . We are friendly, informal, affordable and here to help, so no matter what your concern is – get in touch and we can have a noobligation chat so you can see how we can help you achieve your goals ”.
A great tip – every time you think you are hungry – drink a glass of water first! Make this your habit.
Our sessions are also available via zoom, so no matter where you are in the world - we can help
If you are putting off exercise, think about it keeping you fit and strong so that when you are 100 years old – you can still bop away in your dance classes!

At Acrotrix we have seen first hand how difficult it is to get high quality training in acro skills. A lot of dance schools shy away from teaching them for fear of injury or poor technique. For too long students have not been unable to access a suitable acro provision in their local area and have relied on teaching themselves through YouTube videos. This often leads to frustration or injuries because they cannot master a skill or without proper feedback and correction they will have messy technique which will cost marks in a competition and have the opposite effect then what they want to achieve.
worry of mixing into new bubbles and risking further lockdowns parents and teachers do not want students to travel to other studios or workshops and risk spreading the virus or bringing it back to the studio. The Acrotrix Remote Training (ART) Programme was born out of lockdown and the beauty of it is that the student can learn completely from home. Better yet, we also train parents how to spot those essential skills so the student can have their own coach at home to help them practice as much as they want so they can attain those skills quicker than ever before and safely.
After a long lockdown we know dancers are desperate to get back to doing what they love and with the

during lockdown and have returned to their dance studio with an impressive repertoire of new skills. By attending regular online classes we have formed a community of like minded kids who support, encourage and motivate one another and a network of parent coaches who have done the same, often sharing ideas and tips in our online forum! Our coaches are highly qualified elite gymnastic, acro and dance coaches who teach in an encouraging and engaging way to guarantee that the students understand the technique, are given plenty of feedback and corrections and are rewarded for not only achieving skills but for working hard and improving. In the first programme of it’s kind we have developed an online platform that provides on demand training and live classes that fit around the student enabling them to train anytime, anywhere. Students are awarded coveted Acrotrix points for achieving new skills, parent coach engagement and for good technique because what’s use is a skill if it’s messy? Those points can be cashed in for rewards like private lessons, Acrotrix apparel, air tracks and even once in a lifetime holidays!
