MISSION STATEMENT The Cabin’s mission is to inspire a love of reading, writing and discourse. Thanks to individual support and grants from dozens of public and private foundations, our organization has been enriching the literary lives of Idahoans since 1995. The Cabin offers award-winning programs year-round, including youth and adult education, a Readings & Conversations series that brings the world to Boise one acclaimed author at a time, and publication opportunities for all ages.
2013 ANNUAL REPORT
What an amazing year it has been at The Cabin! We served more than 5,000 people with our programs, worked in partnership with thirty classrooms and a dozen other nonprofits in the Treasure Valley. But we measure our success in stories, not in numbers. We could tell you about the moments when we have been moved to tears by students or about the incredible poems we received for WITA or about the passionate discourse sparked by Cabin lectures but instead we will share the words of participants. Local writer and professor Malia Collins sent an email in the middle of the night after attending one of our Readings & Conversations events: I could not sleep I was so moved and inspired after Junot Diaz last night. It was, by far, the greatest R&C I’ve ever been to. He was smart and challenging and thoughtful and he said things I felt resonate in my soul….this is why I read, this is why I write. When asked about her camp experience one fifth grader said: I like writing because I get to express myself. Writing my thoughts brings my head out of the turtle shell. Stories bring us together in a way nothing else can. We share in the passion, the intrigue and the unknown when we read or write stories together. Thank you for supporting The Cabin’s mission and for building our success stories. We look forward to sharing more with you in the years ahead. With gratitude, Karen Baerlocher, Board President, Britt Udesen, Executive Director,

writers in the schools (wits)
During the school year The Cabin’s WRITERS IN THE SCHOOLS (WITS) employs professional local writers – poets, fiction writers, playwrights, and non-fiction writers – to teach semester or school-year long writing residencies in schools, juvenile detention centers, and community learning centers. Through active, imaginative writing experiences under the mentorship of The Cabin’s teaching-writers, our goal is to engage students and classroom teachers in the pleasure and power of reading and writing. 2013 WITS Schools: Ada County Juvenile Detention Center, Canyon Springs High School, Eagle Middle School, Foothills School of Arts and Sciences CHOICE program, Frank Church High School, Marian Pritchett High School, Mary McPherson Elementary School, Roosevelt Elementary School, Rose Hill Montessori School, Seven Oaks Elementary School, Southwest Idaho Juvenile Detention Center, Victory Academy and White Pine Elementary.
Each spring and summer IDAHO WRITING CAMPS offer students in grades 3-12 and adults, the opportunity to explore and engage in creative writing adventures. Professional writers join campers in using the natural world, cultural sites, and unique experiences to embark on journeys of inspiration and imagination. Because of generous contributors scholarships are available for all of our camps and no students are turned away due to financial need. In 2013, 409 campers participated in Cabin Writing Camps. An additional 100 were served as part of free Writing Camp outreach programs at Fort Hall and the Boys and Girls Club of Garden City.
