2014 ANNUAL REPORT

This fiscal year marked The Cabin’s 19th year of serving a vibrant community of readers and writers. In 2014, more than 13,000 community members partipated in Cabin programs. We continued evaluating and improving the outcomes of our core programs—placing professional writers in schools, offering a diverse selection of workshops for kids and adults, and presenting readings and literary events. This year we took existing programs and grew them in ways that reached new and diverse audiences. Cheryl Strayed spoke honestly and movingly with our WITS students in the Ada Country Juvenile Detention Center as well as to a group of Wild Women. Campers learned to be journalists. Audience members heard from new and challenging lecturers. Adult writers explored blogging. Storyfort, a four day celebration of stories, presented as a part of Treefort Music Festival, was born. As we look forward to our 20th birthday we know we have a strong foundation upon which to build our new chapter. This year also brought new opportunities for Cabin staff members Jan English, Julie Strand and Larry Tierney. All of them have done much to build The Cabin and enrich our literary community. We offer them our gratitude. The Cabin enters into 2015 with an extraordinarily talented team of staff, board, and teaching artists. Thank you for supporting The Cabin’s mission and for building our success stories. With gratitude, Britt Udesen Executive Director

WRITERS IN THE SCHOOLS WITS supports creative writing enrichment in 3rd-12th

grade classrooms throughout the Treasure Valley. During the school year, The Cabin employs professional local writers— poets, novelists, playwrights, and journalists—to teach semester or school-year-long writing residencies in schools, juvenile detention centers, and community learning centers. Through active, imaginative writing experiences under the mentorship of The Cabin’s teaching-writers, WITS engages students and classroom teachers in the pleasure and power of reading and writing. In 2014, WITS served over 1,000 students at Ada County Juvenile Detention Center, the Boys and Girls Club in Garden City, Frank Church High School, Fresco Arts Academy, Liberty Elementary, Marian Pritchett High School, Roosevelt Elementary, Rose Hill Montessori, Seven Oaks Elementary, Southwest Idaho Juvenile Detention Center, Trail Wind Elementary, Victory Academy, West Canyon Elementary, and White Pine Elementary.

WRITING CAMPS CABIN WRITING CAMPS are week-long workshops

for Idaho kids in grades 3-12. Each camp is led by a professional teaching-writer who designs challenging creative writing enrichment in their genre of expertise: poetry, fiction, memoir, journalism, and plays. Through hands-on exploration, camp students practice the tools they need in order to write well. Students encounter challenging prompts and write lots of new work, before receiving in-depth critique toward revision. At the culmination of writing camp, students share their writing at a public reading and publish a revised piece in The Cabin’s end-of-summer print anthology, Camp Fire. Writing camp helps ignite a lifelong love of reading and writing, and gives students practical tools to apply their passion for writing to their practice on the page. In the summer of 2014, The Cabin served over 350 camp students in Boise, Garden City, and Hailey. We awarded $2,700 in scholarships for camp based on student financial need. An additional 100 students were served at free writing camp outreach programs at the Fort Hall Shoshone-Bannock reservation and in Garden City at the Boys & Girls Club.

workshops, readings, book clubs, WORD WORKSHOPS support the Treasure Valley’s vibrant community of writers through challenging small-group classes led by published authors. In 2014, The Cabin presented workshops by memoirist and humorist AK Turner, poet Danny Stewart, poet and memoirist Nicole LeFavour, and fiction writer Valerie Kiesig. WORD READINGS help Treasure Valley readers discover new work by local writers through free showcases at The Cabin. In 2014, The Cabin presented free readings by fiction writer Claire Vaye Watkins, poet Kerri Webster, fiction writer Malia Collins, and journalist Nathaniel Hoffman. DROP-IN WORKSHOP is The Cabin’s free and open writing workshop, held from 6:30-8 PM on the first Tuesday of each month. Drop-in is hosted by local published authors who create unique prompts designed to inspire a supportive community of local writers.

WRITERS IN THE ATTIC is an annual writing contest and publication opportunity for local authors. It is designed as a stepping stone for new writers providing guidance on how to submit work for publication, and a venue that showcases their talent in our community. All Idaho writers aged 18 and older are invited to submit work on a theme. The contest is blind judged and the winning work is published in

events, publishing

an anthology. Nineteen Idaho authors were chosen to be part of the 2014 Writers in the Attic anthology book, Nerve. The first annual STORYFORT took place during Treefort Music Fest, March 20-23rd, 2014. Readings and performances featured authors from Boise, Northwest, and beyond, that were free and open to the public. Storyfort was presented by The Cabin in collaboration with other story and poem focused organizations.
