THE SEA GROVE REAPER [EXCERPT]

Madison Hassoldt Grade 3, Meridian

Chapter 3: Lavs went into the beach house. There, Quaint Pond (A.K.A. bird boy) was waiting for her. “Hello!” they said at the same time. “I call this meeting to order!” called their leader, Pepper Starless. Quaint had a sly smile as if he knew what Pepper was going to say. “There has been a disturbance in the grove,” she said. Quaint’s grin was a giant sun. “Quaint, Lavs, you have been assigned to the task,” Pepper inished. Lavs felt sick to her stomach. An hour later, she was in a bright-as-the-sun yellow room that smelled musty. Lavs was growing plants for the mission. She remembered her welcoming event, how Pepper had given her the necklace, and how proud she had felt.

Chapter 4: As Lavs was swimming into the approaching shadow, her mind worried. What if I can’t do this? What if I prove to be a failure? she thought. Her mind raced back to the memory of her mother growing lumps all over on her eyes, nose, mouth, and all over her skin. The popping sound as chia sprouted all over the spots where the lumps had been. He father yelling every bad name in the universe at her. Running away from all she knew, weeping. Quaint was the last thing she saw before she passed out. Then she woke up. She was in a completely white room. Not even her shadow had followed her here. She was in the chamber of eternity. Just then, she saw something that blew her mind. It was half-Quaint, half-reaper. “I challenge you to a battle,” said Quaint. “On the terms that if I win, you leave the sea grove alone,” said Lavs. “Game on,” he said dramatically. Reaper pulled a knife out and viciously cut her. Blood oozed out of her wounds on her arm, on her leg, and on her chest. Lavs was losing, but she couldn’t let him win. She summoned her core magic. Lavs threw bright laming ivy at Reaper, then imprisoned him in a giant Venus lytrap, turned him into a leaf, teleported him into her hand, and tore him apart. 33

Let’s go!” So we decided to go in Dad’s oice. We opened the doors and stepped in and closed them. Atlantis said, “It smells like peppermint. Chapter 1: Dewlish Days The winds were raging. The yells and screams were adding to the loud noises of the great dragon’s ire. The savage beast roared and swung its claws at the buildings. People ran like rabbits around the ruined city. Nearly no one survived. The captain ran into the room, “Sire,” he said, “Our forces are no use. What can we do against the dragon?” “Let the people run,” said the Dewlish King. “The people need to run away from their inal days. You should too. We will all inevitably die, so die with your family.” “Sire…” Then the castle was destroyed. The great nation of Dewland was destroyed during the Doomsday. It all happened 67 years ago, when the gods let the world. Monsters ran amok in Homeworld. The priests lost their powers as the Holy Magic vanished. The irst 10 years, people were running, afraid of monsters or attacking the monsters. Then Dewland was destroyed. Goblins and giants overtook the ruins, as humans ran and made new settlements. The dwarfs and elves only protected their kingdoms against monsters such as wyrms and dragons, keeping their heavy traditions. The king of Eiland, King Lewiston, found great heroes willing to go across Homeworld to ind out why the gods let. ***** “Hey!” said the guard. There had just been a robbery in someone’s shop. Then on the Dewlish memorial we will kill the king.” Alexandria gasped. She ran and told the king and he was ininitely thankful. The king said, “Alexandria, you have solved many crimes with expertise. Do you want to ind the gods?” She was the irst godseeker, or group of people who will 39

Joseph Michaels Grade 4, Boise

Coner and his crew were on an exploration to Mars to ind a portal. Before the crew let Earth, the mission commander told them a portal exists. An asteroid hit their spaceship and they spun out of control. Inside of the spaceship it was rumbling and spinning but Coner and his crew were not injured. Coner was ine because he went on many adventures with his dad. The spaceship was spinning and then they crashed. The big boom could be heard from a mile away. The crew popped open the door and climbed out to search the area where they crashed. They saw the red sand and a tall red mountain looming in the distance. Coner knew that it had the portal and he was excited because he could complete the mission and get back to Earth. They waited until it got dark and attempted to get to the portal. It was pitch black, with no wind or birds. Then they saw the cave. They hid in a crater and waited to get closer to the cave until the guards looked the other way. The black knights had big horses with black armor. Coner knew that the black knights had already found the portal and stayed there because they wanted to have the portal to themselves. There were only two black knight guards and all the crew had to do was to go around and sneak in quietly. They got caught seven times and on the eighth time they snuck past all of the horses that were sleeping and got close to the portal. In the last ive seconds the guards saw them, and all the horses chased them. Coner and his crew just made it and they thought that they would just plop on the ground but they got to Earth.

BATTLE OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM, VOL. 1: THE RETURN OF SATURN [EXCERPT]

Caleb Mitchell Grade 3, Mountain Home

Jace and Abby ran towards the astronauts. “Who is this, Jace?” the astronaut said. “Abigail,” Jace answered. The astronaut, who had just spoken to Jace, hit the SHOOT button on his machine and shot at D-1997. D-1997 took one more shot at the exoskeleton, and then lew into the distance. A rumble sounded. The astronaut on the land speeder said, “It’s Titan. We built it so it should be good.” When Titan came into view, it looked like a massive war machine. Guns were everywhere. Titan shot at them. “Take cover!” Jace yelled. “I’ll open the hatch.” A small door opened in the moon surface. Jace, Abby, and the astronauts jumped through the hatch. The astronauts ran toward little screens and buttons. The astronaut who had met Jace said, “My name is Percy. Follow me.” Jace followed Percy to a little screen. Percy pressed a button. “Do you want to use this gun?” Percy asked. “Sure,” Jace answered. Percy showed Jace how to use the gun. Looking through the screen, he could see what was happening. Pressing the SHOOT button, he blasted one of Titan’s guns apart. An explosion next to him alerted him that if he shot them, they would shoot him. Blasting two more of Titan’s guns and being nearly shot, Jace was alerted that Titan was about to launch asteroid ships. Titan rumbled. A door opened. A battalion of asteroid ships shot out, and Jace shot at one. A small column of smoke rose. Jace shot at it again, and it blew up. A small plume of smoke was in the air. Jace was alerted that two of Titan’s guns had been destroyed! Jace was also alerted that one of the moon’s guns had been destroyed.
