The Cambridge Union
President’s Welcome Welcome to Cambridge and another term at the Cambridge Union.
Becoming a member of the Union is an investment, there are no two ways about it. If you end up never coming to our events – it was a waste. If you take advantage of them – I can guarantee you that you won’t regret the money spent. The Union discusses topics and hosts speakers that appeal to every avenue of public interest available, and we do it in such a large volume that no matter your commitments, there is always time to come and see an event or two a week.
This page is often described as the dullest ego trip in the Termcard (except the President’s Thanks of course), so I strongly recommend skipping over it, but if you’ve settled down with a cup of coffee to spend 30 minutes reading the Termcard in full (said no one ever), then by all means please do read on. With over 25 speaker events, 11 packed debates, 3 forums and a plethora of social events, there really isn’t a better time to be a member of the Cambridge Union. If this is your first term at Cambridge, I hope you will find this term a fitting beginning to your time at University. If you’re returning to Cambridge, I hope this term will alleviate the pain of knowing that every day is another step down the hill that is the rest of your life.
So have a read through this Termcard and see what you think. We are all pretty excited about it – but then again we would be – so come and try the Union for yourself and decide if it’s a place you think should be a part of your Cambridge Experience. Have a fantastic term, and to many of you, welcome back. Best wishes,
The term will kick off with our Open Week, which is a great way to try out the Union before becoming a member. It contains three speaker events, a full debate, a forum and a debating workshop – so you should get a feel for the place. After this point, passiveaggressive stewards will start appearing asking to scan your membership cards.

The Union Upgrades As the Cambridge Union Society celebrates its 200th Anniversary, an exciting collaboration between the University’s largest Society and the University’s largest College is planning refurbishment and redevelopment on the site which the Society believes is the only way to fix the existing Union buildings in order to accommodate the Society’s needs for the next 200 years. Not only will these proposals deliver the
physical and infrastructure necessities for the Union, but they will also enable the continued and essential generation of extra funds by helping the Union do what it needs to do commercially as a non-profit making business. The proposals include the refurbishment, remodelling, partial demolition and reconstruction of areas within the Union building; as well as the reinstatement of lost original form and features.
In addition a new accommodation building and restaurant is proposed to enhance the North East corner of the site. Plans are currently being drafted and it is intended that they will be exhibited to members and the public at a consultation event (date still to be confirmed) sometime during the Michaelmas Term.

On a Debate Night The format used at the Cambridge Union is loosely based on the British Parliamentary style. Each team, consisting of three or four speakers, argues either for or against a set motion and are called the proposition and opposition respectively. The first proposition speaker starts each debate, and proposition and opposition speakers alternate throughout. Each speaker has ten minutes in which to present their case.
“point of information”. At the end of the debate, the President will invite the speakers to leave and then direct members of the floor to vote. Members vote as they leave the chamber by walking through a particular door, as in Parliament. Those voting in favour of the motion exit through the door marked Ayes and those against through the door marked Noes. Unlike Parliament, members can also abstain by leaving through a third door.
Members on the floor are invited to give short speeches of their own after each pair of main speakers, again in proposition or opposition, but also in abstention. Members may also interrupt the main speeches, although only at the discretion of the speaker, to ask a question or give a brief point of information. To do so, they should stand and announce “on that point” or
The swing in audience opinion is calculated from before to after the debate. Members will be given voting cards on the way in which will denote their initial thoughts on the motion. The results of the vote are announced in the 1815 Bar and Cafe around fifteen minutes after the end of the debate.

Competitive Debating The Cambridge Union Society runs one of the most successful and inclusive competitive debating programmes in the world. Our programme has something for everyone, whether you want to debate competitively at an international level, or just want to build your confidence with public speaking. You need no previous experience to get involved. In fact, many of our most successful debaters have started their university debating careers as beginners. We offer members the chance to debate around the UK on a weekly basis, and we give as many members as possible the chance to debate at those tournaments.
If you’re selected, we’ll cover your registration fees and most of your travel costs. What else do we do? To start, the Union hosts debating workshops for schools across the UK. Teaching in these workshops is a fun, rewarding way to pass on the art of debating and develop teaching skills. Cambridge debaters also serve as judges for Cambridge Schools, the largest schools debating competition in the world, which offers schoolchildren from a wide range of backgrounds the opportunity to learn more about Cambridge and debating. The Fellowship 2016
Ambidextrous brains required WPP is the world leader in marketing communications, with more than 155 companies setting industry standards in Advertising; Media Investment Management; Data Investment Management; Public Relations & Public Affairs; Branding & Identity; Healthcare Communications; Direct, Digital, Promotion & Relationship Marketing; and Specialist Communications. We are manufacturers of communications ideas that help to build business for our clients, through creating and developing relationships with the people who buy and use their products and services. We do this through a demanding combination of hard work and flair; logic and intuition; left brain and right brain thinking. For further information ask at your careers service or contact: Amelie Vignalou, WPP T: +44 (0)20 7408 2204 E-mail: amelie.vignalou@wpp.com
The Fellowship was started, 20 years ago, to create future generations of leaders for our companies. Fellows tend to be intellectually curious people who are motivated by the challenges of marketing communications and by the prospect of working at the confluence of art and business. They spend three years on the program: in each year they work in a different WPP company, in a different marketing communications discipline and, usually, on a different continent. Long-term prospects within a WPP company are excellent, with many former Fellows now occupying senior management positions.

President’s Thanks If you’ve genuinely reached the end of this Termcard; nice job. If you skipped to the end looking for your name; you are frankly everything that is wrong with humanity.
constant support and a friend who has got on with everything I have thrown at you quietly and without complaint. Finally, to William – you and I have been two sides of a coin for our time here and I couldn’t have done it without you. You keep me sane and you will always have my gratitude. In sum – all I can really say is thank you, for everything, and I wish you all the best of luck for the future.
I have been privileged in my two years here to work for some phenomenal Presidents, specifically Amy Gregg, and to have worked alongside an incredibly dedicated staff who have all become my friends. George, Bart, Craig, Noemi, Dave, Dom, Sam, Paddy and Nick – the Union only exists because of people like you and you will always have my deep respect and gratitude. Joe – you’ve been there with me every step of the way and you have an incredible vision for the Union. Alex and Joanna – thank you for everything you have done for our anniversary year, and thank you for being both friends and mentors to me from the very beginning. To the Trustees – you have guided this building through the toughest of periods and it now faces a brighter future than anyone could ever have hoped, and for this you have our thanks.
Bill Bailey has become my friend and my mentor. As Bursar you keep this building open, and without your leadership when you first arrived, I have no doubt we would have gone bankrupt and turned into student accommodation. You have gently guided numerous Presidents, and we have worked closely together for two years, and I will miss you. Thank you for everything you do for the Union, and I wish you the best as you embark on the greatest adventure of them all: site development. I owe my family a debt of thanks, who are the reason I have achieved anything in my life. Finally, to Oliver – you are my best friend and the reason I get up in the morning. You have done more for me than you will ever know, and I love you.
This term was created by a team elected in a fashion Putin would be proud of, but who I couldn’t be happier with. Asia – your positive outlook and cando attitude makes me smile in every meeting. Charlotte – you are one of my best friends and you have achieved so much in so little time. Sach – you are completely unique and the volume of work you have done for this place is staggering, and you will always have my thanks. Fred – you have been a
Best wishes,
