Welcome back! There’s no two ways about it, 2016 was a terrible year. Hopefully, 2017 will be better. We have, in this first term of 2017 at the Union tried to reach a position where we look forward, and backward, in equal measure. Our first debate of term considers the future shape of the geopolitical stage and later on we will consider whether or not Brexit was a mistake. Throughout, we ask questions of the establishment, feminism and the press, hoping that by discussing these difficult issues we can hope to reach a better level of understanding. I like to think that by listening to and coming to perceive the differing perspectives of those around us, we start to make inroads to empathy. And a more empathetic world is hopefully one that starts to leave some of the negativity of last year behind. We sincerely hope that you will find time this term to come to a debate; listen to people you like, challenge the people you hate or sit in total silence and listen. I hope you find time to stick around, have engaging conversations in the bar afterwards and maybe even meet someone you admire. Maybe that’s a bit rich or a bit evangelical, maybe you just want to get drunk or work out or be near someone famous. We can do those things too. The Spring Ball in March should be one of the best nights of term at the Union and the ticket prices are basically a steal (and I’ve heard all of the cool and interesting people will be there). The Union staples of Yoga and Zumba will be running weekly and 6
our speaker line-up this term is something worth getting excited about. To point out a few personal highlights, David Petraeus, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat seem unmissable - but if we have completely divergent interests there is still almost certainly something in the line-up for you. We’re also continuing working with Liz Fraser from Headspace and Student Minds Cambridge this term so that hopefully we can continue to push for an open dialogue about mental health both inside and outside of the Union building. Hopefully that is something of interest to at least some of you! Finally – if you do have time this term to get involved, absolutely do it. It’s a brilliant way to get out of college and to make use of that membership card that you may or may not have picked up in October. We sincerely hope we’ll see you here this term.

Involved If you’re interested by what you see happening at the Union or if you fancy an opportunity to have dinner with some important people, we would love it if you wanted to get involved. All we are looking for is enthusiasm, whether you’re a fresher or a finalist there is probably a role here that will suit your interests. Details of who to contact can be found below and we’d encourage you to join our Facebook group to find out more and keep up to date! Student Officers and Appointed Positions The Union is a society run at its core by a diverse range of students, from first years to graduate students of all subjects and degree types. The Standing Committee officers are mostly elected by the membership to create each term’s programme, consisting of the President, Vice President, Executive Officer, Speakers Officer, Treasurer, Social Events Officer and Debating Officers. In addition, we have a Full Committee consisting of appointed positions which is a way to get involved without election. Applications open at the end of each term so keep an eye out for emails about that. Positions include; Head of Events Management, Senior Guest Liaison, Head of Audio-Visual, Digital Media Editor, Head of Press, Head of Publicity, Chief Photographer, Secretary, Head of Membership, Diversity Officer, Women’s Officer and Access Officers. Stewarding James Fox, Daniel Grünwald – hoem@cus.org The Union literally could not run without the help of stewards. From logistics to security, stewards are crucial to an event’s success. You will no doubt have seen them at every event in their stylish high visibility jackets. With no previous experience necessary, this is one of the best ways to start to get involved with the Union. They receive a £5 bar tab and a free panini after every event they help at. Speakers Committee Jonah Surkes – speakers-elect@cus.org Members of Speakers Committee invite high profile speakers to speak at the Union. AV Team Jason Lee, Henry Mitson – audiovisual@cus.org The Audio Visual Team is responsible for filming and recording all debates and speaker events. The Heads of AV, working alongside professionals, will train you on the equipment so no previous experience is needed. This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved with the Union, and also learn a new skill or pursue a passion in AV. Our Audio Visual Stewards receive a £5 bar tab and a free panini after every event they help with. Guest Liaison Assistants speakers.liaison@cus.org/debates.liaison@cus.org GLAs are responsible for looking after Union guests during their time in Cambridge and are used for both debate speakers and individual speaker guests. This can be an unparalleled opportunity to spend time with some of the world’s most influential and high profile speakers. Debates Committee James Burn – executive-elect@cus.org Debates Committee works with the Executive-Elect to secure the line-up for the main debates. Members of this committee will be responsible for writing invites to prominent speakers at the top of their fields to come and speak in the Union chamber. Debates Committee will run on Saturday evenings. Treasurer’s Committee Seun Adekoya – treasurer-elect@cus.org Members of Treasurer’s Committee work alongside the Treasurer Elect to secure Treasurer’s Treats (Member’s Discounts) and initiate correspondence with sponsors. Ents Committee Hattie Allison – ents-elect@cus.org The ents committee is run by the Social Events Officer Elect and will focus on organising the Union’s annual Garden Party, as well as setting up logistics for the weekly ents programme. On a
Debate Night If you still haven’t had a chance to come to the Union for a debate – hopefully you’ll decide this term is the right time to start. The format used at the Cambridge Union is loosely based on the British Parliamentary style. Each team, consisting of three or four speakers, argues either for or against a set motion and are called the proposition and opposition respectively. The first proposition speaker begins the debate after which speakers on the proposition and opposition alternate. Each speaker has ten minutes to present their case. In between each pair of speakers, members are invited to give short ‘floor speeches’ in proposition, opposition and abstention.
Members are also allowed to try and intervene in the main speeches by offering a point of information. These take the form of a short comment or question and are accepted at the speaker’s discretion. To offer one, simply stand up and announce “on that point” or “point of information”. Once the debate is over the President will invite the speakers to leave and then direct members of the floor to vote. Members vote as they leave the chamber by walking through doors marked Ayes and Noes: Ayes for those wishing to vote in favour of the motion, and for those against, Noes. Unlike in Parliament, members can also abstain by leaving through the central door. We calculate the swing in audience opinion from before to after the debate. Members are given voting cards on the way into the debate so they can express their initial thoughts on the motion. The results of the vote are then announced in the 1815 Bar around fifteen minutes after the end of the debate.

Competitive
Debating The Union has a global reputation for its Members’ excellence in public speaking and debating. Speakers from the Union regularly reach the finals of the European and World Championships, and two of the last three individuals to be ranked as the best debater in the world have been members of the Society. For those who want to, the Union is the best springboard possible for becoming a great debater. What makes the Cambridge Union unique, however, is that it also focuses on developing the public speaking abilities of all its members, irrespective of their prior experience or free time to commit to debating. This means that even if you are not interested in amassing silverware, debating at the Union still has a huge amount to offer you. Our weekly debating workshops, usually held on Wednesdays from 7.30-9.30pm, are led by Cambridge’s senior debaters and cater to all levels of experience. This term we will also be running extra workshops throughout the week on an irregular basis, so even if you can’t make our Wednesday ones you will still be able to get involved. If you want to become more confident at contributing in supervisions, gain an edge at interviews, or
just feel like discussing global issues with a group of fascinating people, then debating at the Cambridge Union is for you! We regularly send members of the Union to represent the Society at competitions throughout the UK and abroad. We offer members the chance to participate in domestic competitions almost every week and this year are also planning to send Cambridge’s debaters to Ireland, Estonia, India, America and China to name just a few! The easiest way to get involved is to simply show up to our weekly debating workshops and to search for 'Cambridge Debating' on Facebook and join the group. Secretary John Lehman Secretary Lehman is widely regarded as one of the most influential Secretaries of the Navy in American history. He served as a member of the 9/11 Commission and advised both the Romney and McCain campaigns.
Peter Hitchens Peter is a leading British journalist and author. He has served as a foreign correspondent in both Moscow and Washington – he now writes for the Mail on Sunday.
Sir Malcolm Rifkind Sir Malcolm is a former Foreign Secretary, Defence Secretary and Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee. He retired as MP for Kensington in 2015.

Liberalise Prostitution Thursday 26th January, 7:30pm In light of the discussions this summer by the Home Affairs Select Committee regarding the decriminalisation of sex workers, the Union asks whether prostitution should indeed be liberalised. This week the Union tackles the contentious issue of sex work, asking whether changes to the laws surrounding sex work should be welcomed or criticized.

Islam is Compatible with Western Liberalism Thursday 2nd March, 7:30pm A difficult and perhaps unpopular question, the relationship between Islam and socalled ‘Western Values’ has been questioned repeatedly in recent years. In the aftermath of the ‘burkini’ spat, Trump’s exclusionary rhetoric, the refugee influx, and the wave of terrorist attacks across mainland Europe, the Union asks if these tensions can be resolved.

Nina Ansari Nina is an Iranian-American historian, bestselling author and expert on women’s rights in Iran. In 2014, Women’s eNews recognised Nina as one of the ‘21 leaders of the 21st century’.
Srishti Krishnamoorthy-Cavell Srishti Krishnamoorthy-Cavell is a final year doctoral scholar in English at Newnham. She was a semi-finalist and 14th ranked speaker at the European Universities Debating Championships in 2015.
Sharmila Parmanand Sharmila Parmanand is a Gates Scholar and PhD candidate in Gender Studies. In 2012 she served as Co-Chief Adjudicator for the World Universities Debating Championship.

Canadian High Commissioner
Janice Charette joined the Canadian public service in 1984, and served as the second ever female Clerk of the Privy Council. In July 2016, she was officially appointed by Justin Trudeau to be the High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Her diplomatic service in the current political climate will no doubt prove to be of particular significance as the world prepares for the impact of Brexit and President Trump's term in office.

Heydon Prowse is the co-creator of the BAFTA-winning BBC3 show The Revolution Will Be Televised and writer for the upcoming BBC2 comedy show Revolting. He has established an extensive career in the national media, with a particular focus on political satire with an impact; he made national news in 2009 when he made a secret recording of Conservative MP Alan Duncan which resulted in his dismissal. He is also the co-founder of Help Refugees UK.

Daniel Levin spent his early years as the son of a diplomat in the Middle East and in Africa, later training in international law. He has worked with think tanks on novel political models and with monarchies towards the democratic legitimization of their monarchic systems, and is also engaged in mediation efforts in war zones across the globe. The hotly anticipated release of his upcoming book Nothing But A Circus tells the dramatic story of recent international politics from the inside.

Former Director of the CIA
David Petraeus is a retired American military officer and public official. During his military career, he led the organisation responsible for training and mentoring Iraq's army and police in the aftermath of the US invasion in 2003, and went on to lead the entire US military operation in Iraq in 2007. In 2011, he was elected unanimously and confirmed as the Director of the CIA by the U.S. Senate, a post from which he resigned in 2012.

Simon joined the British Heart Foundation in 2013 after an extensive career working within healthcare. He previously worked as Head of Operations at the Healthcare Commission, where he was responsible for the inspection of NHS healthcare facilities in England. His visit to the Union comes at a critical time for the UK; as burdens upon the NHS grow, healthcare charities like the British Heart Foundation are under pressure to take on the research and support that the NHS cannot.

Congressman Randy Neugebauer Congressman Neugeberger represented Texas’s 19th District from 2003 to the start of this year. He is a member of the Republican Party.
Philippa Thomas Philippa is the main presenter of BBC World News Today. She was the BBC’s North America correspondent between 1997 and 2001, reporting on the impeachment of Clinton and the 9/11 attacks.

Sake Tasting and Talk Initially used as a gift for the Gods, the idea of "sake" evolved from something used for rituals to a beverage enjoyed by the common people. Rice, as well as being central in the Japanese cuisine, is the origin of sake. A 30 minute presentation, given by Rie Yoshitake from the Sake Samurai Association, will introduce you into the world of Japan's most famous native alcohol. Firstly, to the Lent Team: Charles, Anna, Andrea, Tom and Amy, I have never in my life encountered a group of people so devastatingly good at what they do and so much fun to spend time with. A lot of people think their team is the best but we get to be right in thinking that. Nothing would have been possible without you (Easter Team – you lot are okay too). And to everyone who gave up time over their holidays to help us with writing and sending invitations - you are the real MVPs and I hope you’re as pleased with yourselves as we are pleased with you. To Leyla: you are my rock. Thank you for listening to me moan about admin for the better part of the last two years and for always being ready with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and a sympathetic ear. I could not have dreamed of a better Vice-President or friend. And William, I never would have joined the Union team if you hadn’t sat me down and regaled me with stories of free coffee and dinners.
