A FULL SEASON OF MUSIC I am delighted to be able to share with you our first full concert Season in over two years: a Season filled with hope and excitement, debuts and reunions, and – most importantly – wonderful music for all ages and tastes.

This Season sees us exploring a variety of important themes, throwing the spotlight on some of our own incredible musicians as soloists, showcasing new music – the lifeblood of our art form – (including performances of the remaining CBSO Centenary Commissions), a celebration of the genius of Vaughan Williams at 150 and much, much more.

Perhaps the most prominent thread though, is that of an exploration of the world around us. This World draws together programmes inspired by the beauty, power and frailty of nature – and human nature. It’s no secret that the natural world has always inspired composers and musicians and we look forward to exploring that fascination with works old and new across the year (find out more on p.6). Alongside showstopping symphonies and choral masterpieces, we have the return of our series of popular classics such as the Classic FM Hall of Fame, Movie Magic and once again you have your own chance to perform with the orchestra in our much-loved singalong in May. If there’s a bigger, classier karaoke anywhere in the UK, then I’ve yet to hear of it! In addition to the old, we of course welcome the new and I’m thrilled that this Season sees us embark on a new collaboration with the Orchestral Qawwali Project in May, we return to Hockley Social Club for our Symphonic Sessions in the Autumn, and it’s ‘game on’ as we present our first concert of music from classic video games, the symphonic FINAL FANTASY 10th Anniversary concert in April 2023. Until we officially welcome our new Chief Conductor and Artistic Advisor Kazuki Yamada in April 2023, we are lucky enough to have both Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and Kazuki as Principal Guest Conductors, two phenomenal talents leading the orchestra. We will also be joined by a star-studded list of soloists and conductors including Nicola Benedetti, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Sir Andrew Davis, Alison Balsom, Roderick Williams, Vilde Frang and Benjamin Grosvenor, to name just a few. We also look forward to presenting those artists who are making their debut with us this Season and trust you will give them a rousing CBSO welcome. We know that this is a time of some economic uncertainty and in recognition of this, despite a huge rise in our operating costs, we have only increased ticket prices across all bands by 50p and we continue to offer generous package discounts for our new Season, alongside affordable tickets for students, 18-30s, benefit recipients and first-time attendees. THIS WORLD

For many composers, the natural world has provided a starting point for creativity and inspired some of the greatest musical masterpieces of all time. Its depiction through sound is instantly recognisable - from the swell of the dawn chorus to the crash of a wave in the unruliest sea. Human nature has proved just as important a muse. Stories of love and longing, drama and despair, and more recently, narratives inspired by humanity’s impact on the world, have been captured in magnificent orchestral colour and shared with the world. Our new Season is filled with music which explores this fascination with the Earth and its inhabitants, including great pillars from the orchestral tradition such as Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, Debussy’s La mer and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Alongside the old, we explore the new with UK premieres of Brett Dean’s In This Brief Moment – an ‘evolution cantata’ for double chorus and orchestra inspired by Darwin, and Thomas Larcher’s depiction of Austrian mountain peaks, A Line Above the Sky, to name just two. We’re sure you’ll find much to enjoy throughout the Season in our great musical exploration of the world. 6

Cuppa Concert Cuppa Concerts are our series of relaxed small-ensemble concerts, specially programmed for people living in care settings and their carers. These short performances are designed to make audiences feel at ease and feature a range of familiar music. We are happy for audience members to chat, come and go as they please, and we feature sing- and play-along sections. We also keep the hall well-lit during the concert, rather than dimming the auditorium lights. After the concert, we invite you to meet the musicians over tea and cake (both included in the ticket price). “The three watchwords of great music are sincerity, simplicity, and serenity” said Ralph Vaughan Williams. Born in the Cotswolds 150 years ago this October, Vaughan Williams lived into the atomic age, unfailingly true to his artistic ideals and his lifelong belief that music belongs to everyone. In his symphonies and choral music, he became the conscience of a turbulent century, while in pieces like The Lark Ascending and the Tallis Fantasia he found the soul of a nation – and transformed it into something universal. The CBSO was privileged to work with “RVW” while he was alive; now we’re celebrating his anniversary by making music together. There’ll be great shouts of affirmation like A Sea Symphony, favourites like the Fantasia on Greensleeves and the timeless serenity of The Lark Ascending. Michael Seal conducts the visionary Fifth Symphony and there’s chamber music at CBSO Centre. But there’s also a chance to encounter Vaughan Williams the explorer, with a rare live performance, with film, of his stunning 1948 film score Scott of the Antarctic. A fitting tribute to an artist who saw further than others – and whose message never gets any less urgent.

Vaughan Williams at 150: Scott of the Antarctic “To strive, to seek, to find and not to yield”: the 1948 film Scott of the Antarctic is a true classic of British cinema, shot in spectacular full colour. Naturally, they asked Vaughan Williams to write the score – and now, in his 150th anniversary year, we get to hear his extraordinary music in full colour too, as the CBSO and Martyn Brabbins accompany the film, live in concert. Prokofiev & Dvořák A quiet hymn, a flurry of birdsong, and Dvořák's Eighth Symphony springs into life. Birds of Paradise “I grew up with the idea that playing the violin was about being spontaneous” says Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto, and today, he flies with the most natural musicians of all: the birds. Street Music: Stravinsky, Ellington & Rota A fairground in old Russia – and as the crowds jostle and shout, the adventures of the puppet Petrushka are just another sideshow. Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony When Shostakovich wrote his Fifth Symphony he was a marked man, and his career (and possibly his life) depended upon this musical response to a tyrannical government. LIVE AT CBSO CENTRE Get closer to the action and discover one of Birmingham’s best kept musical secrets, a series of short, informal concerts programmed and introduced by our musicians at CBSO Centre.

GOOD TO KNOW Most Centre Stage concerts start at 2pm at CBSO Centre (please note, the performance on 15 December is at 12 noon and the performance on 10 March is at 8pm).
